The Maxfli Tour Golf Ball is like the perfect car for golfers: it feels right, and it works great. Picking a golf ball should make you happy and confident when you play. Lots of balls say they are soft, spin well, or fly far. But the Maxfli ball does all of this really well.

As a golf coach, I’ve tried them myself and really liked them. They’re not perfect though. I also asked my students what they thought. They had mostly good things to say as well.

In this Maxfli Tour S Golf Ball review, we’ll talk about why this ball is special. Opening a box of Maxfli balls is like getting an exciting gift. They look good, and they play even better. When you hit them right, they go far and straight, even farther than some other balls. Sure, they’re not top-of-the-line balls, but the price is what makes them a great choice.

Before diving deep into the product specifics, let’s decode the term “Tour”. Contrary to what some believe, “Tour” doesn’t refer to the PGA Tour or any professional golfing circuit. It denotes that the ball boasts a urethane cover and typically more than two inner layers. The result? Enhanced distance, minimized spin off the tee, and precise spin control during the short game. The ball is manufactured in 3 pieces, the core made from synthetic rubber, surrounded by a mantel covered by Urethane. This ball comes with 318 dimples.

Interestingly enough, the manufacturing of a Three-piece golf ball can require more than 80 steps and take more than 32 quality checks, and takes up to a month to manufacture. Next time you by accident lose a ball remember the hard work that went into that lost ball. I know normally it’s the ball’s fault but still.

Dimples play a pivotal role in determining a golf ball’s performance. A golf ball’s trajectory is majorly influenced by aerodynamics and gravity, and it’s the dimples that help optimize this flight. Maxfli Tour balls are engineered with a specific dimple pattern to enhance lift and improve both flight length and spin. Maxfli is a well-known household sports brand name proudly owned by Dick’s Sporting Goods bought on February 11, 2008, from TaylorMade Golf. Maxfli is most recognized for its golf balls, but later adding golfing umbrellas, golf bags, gloves, and training aids to its Maxfli name arsenal.

Surprisingly almost all high-quality golf balls come from the same country. Maxfli is manufactured in a high-quality-controlled factory by Foremost in Taiwan. The quality of manufacturing speaks for itself.

Alternatives

The Golfball market is very competitive with a lot of different manufacturers out there. Below are some of the same class of balls from different manufacturers with their pros and cons.

The Maxfli Tour golf ball gets an overall grade of 85%. This is above average and pure outstanding. The balls were found to be near perfect consistent size and weight. This ball takes the game to another level when it comes to flight and accuracy. Although it still depends on the golfer. Don’t expect to now all of a sudden play like a pro because you bought one of the best balls out there.

The Maxfli Tour golf ball belongs in a league of its own for being one of the most consistent balls out there in the market. For the golfer looking to save money during these tough times, the Maxfli Tour is an exceptional offering.

A long time ago, Maxfli made a Balata golf ball that I really liked. It had a softer outer cover and really competed well against other golf ball manufacturers who didn’t quite have the feel thing down. Today Maxfli is better known to have a mix of golf balls for high and low handicappers.

I recently tested the Maxfli StraightFli golf balls and was excited to give the Maxfli Tour golf ball a try.

I’ll show you what my experience was like on the golf course and who I would recommend giving this golf ball a try.

Balancing properties for consistency, soft cast urethane cover, three piece technology, tetrahedron dimple pattern, feel and sound, performance from the tee and green, responsive around the greens, long distance, priced a little lower than other premium golf balls, high gloss cover, overall rating and thoughts.

The Maxfli Tour golf ball gets a 9.3/10. Overall you won’t find too much to complain about with this golf ball in play. My favorite use case for the Maxfli Tour is a player who has been playing with cheap golf balls and is looking to find something with performance without breaking the bank.

The Maxfli Tour is a really great value, and it will suit the needs of a wide range of golfers.

The Maxfli Tour Ball is considered a premium ball. Therefore you will notice many of the same features you see in golf balls like Tp5, Pro V1, and Callaway Chrome Soft .

When an object can fly through the air balanced, it should have a more consistent performance. At least, that’s what Maxfli was thinking when they created the Maxfli Tour ball. The patented balancing process ensures that every golf ball is marked so that you can maximize performance potential.

Maxfli pays just a little more attention to detail with the Maxfli Tour than they do with other golf balls in the lineup. If you are a player that takes the time to line a ball up specifically each time, this is a stand-out feature in the Maxfli Tour.

The cover of the Maxfli Tour golf balls is a soft cast urethane. The soft cast urethane is what we see on almost all golf balls in the premium category. The urethane cover typically increases spin around the green and improves overall feel.

The Maxfli Tour golf ball is a 3 piece ball made with a large inner core, thin cover, and thin outer layer. The large inner core increases overall distance potential, improves spin rates around the green, and makes the Maxfli Tour a higher quality golf ball.

The Tetrahedron dimple pattern is designed to optimize ball flight aerodynamics, increasing overall distance and improving the golf ball’s stability while in the air. Although the dimple pattern is unique, it doesn’t stand out as anything that looks glaringly different when looking down at the golf ball.

Performance

Now for the fun part! I took the Maxfli Tour golf ball out for several rounds of golf to make sure I got a real feel for where the golf ball holds up well and where it could use some help. I’ll tell you that overall I was pretty impressed, and I would actually put this on your list of golf balls to try out.

The Maxfli Tour Golf balls are cheaper than the standard premium golf balls from companies like Titleist or Callaway. However, they are a little more expensive than a value or standard 3-piece golf ball.

Pricing goes up on a golf ball when it is more than two pieces. In addition, cast urethane covers are almost always higher in price.

I wouldn’t let the price of the Maxfli Tour golf ball turn you away from it. In fact, I find it to be a really good value.

The overall feel of the Maxfli Tour Golf ball is supposed to be soft. It is not the softest in the tour lineup on the hardest; it kind of fits in the middle. If you have played with a Titleist Pro V1, I would tell you the feel is similar.

Although Maxfli does not publish the compression of the Maxfli Tour, it is probably around an 80 compression golf ball.

The sound is great, I won’t tell you that it feels as buttery as an old Balata ball from Maxfli, but the ball feels strong coming off the clubface and as though it has quite a bit of speed.

The putting green is my favorite place to test to see if I enjoy the feel of a golf ball. With the Maxfli Tour, I really liked the feel on the putting green . The ball came off just a little firm, but it held its line well and helped me get my distance control down during my round.

The spin of the Maxfli Tour needs to be broken down into three categories. The first is the spin from the tee, then the spin on approach shots, and then spin around the greens.

With the Maxfli Tour being considered low spin from the tee, I wanted to make sure that was the case. I’m known to generate a bit of spin with my driver, and sometimes that causes a drive to stop dead in its tracks (not ideal!).

The Maxfli Tour easily eliminated that problem, so spin from the tee is a major plus from this ball.

The spin on the approach shots is not great. I hit a few really good shots that didn’t spin as much as I had hoped for them, too; this was even the case on the 100 yards and in shots. In fact, it gave me little hope for greenside spin.

However, on the short shots around the green, the Maxfli Tour golf balls hold up really well from a spin perspective. The ball spins more than I expected, and I was pleasantly surprised with some of the greenside control you can get with a 3 piece ball, not priced as high as a premium option.

Overall, I think the Maxfli Tour is exactly what it claims to be from a spin perspective. You are going to get low spin from the tee, mid spin on the approach, and then an average to high spin around the greens.

The Maxfli Tour has plenty of carry distance from the tee. One of the things I always look for is whether or not it can carry this dog leg on my home course, as I know a golf ball needs a certain amount of distance to make it.

I put a good swing on the ball, and the Maxfli Tour flew a long way. I think with the extra low spin; you won’t have any problem getting long distances from the Maxfli Tour.

In addition, the distance on approach shots was quite good. I don’t love a golf ball that is long off the tee and then causes me to lose some yardage with the irons. I don’t think you will lose any yardage with the Maxfli Tour, and you will gain some control around the greens.

What I Like About Maxfli Tour Golf Ball

The Maxfli Tour golf ball impressed me. It’s one of the best from Maxfli that I have tried. Here are a few of the key features that help it to stand out.

The Maxfli Tour is long off the tee box and responsive around the greens. Golf balls that offer both tee and greenside performance are hard to come by (without being $50+ a dozen).

Although I can’t say that the Maxfli Tour is the highest-spinning ball around the greens, you have a lot to work with here.

I think from a scoring perspective, you have to play with a golf ball that is responsive near the greens. The Maxfli Tour can stop, it’s responsive, and you can really learn exactly how it will respond coming off the clubface.

I hit the Maxfli Tour a long way. It flies high (but still a penetrating ball flight), and from the tee, it rolls a long time after it lands. You will not lose any yardage going with the Maxfli Tour; sometimes, the more premium golf balls cost you a few yards, but not this one.

I like the Maxfli Tour’s price point – it’s fair and proves that the ball has good value.

What I Dislike About Maxfli Tour Golf Ball

The Maxfli Tour golf ball didn’t give me too many issues, but I think a few things could be improved here.

The cover just doesn’t look as good as a Pro V1, Tp5, or Callaway Chrome Soft. Of course, the cover is still a urethane material, so it has a similar feel; it just looks a little cheaper on the Maxfli Tour. It may be the high gloss finish they tried to provide, but it just doesn’t look quite as premium as the most expensive golf balls in the game.

The Maxfli Tour claims to have mid-iron spin. I think the spin is somewhere between low and mid. I hit some great shots right to the pin, and they could not hold. I would recommend landing this one near the front of the greens and letting it roll up a few yards. Certainly, you can learn to play like that, but it may not be ideal.

2023 Maxfli Tour, Tour X and Tour S

Stopped at my local Golf Galaxy and noticed a few things about the 2023 Maxfli tour balls.   

1. new packaging 

2. New price point ($40/box)

3. New ball - the Tour S.

Curious if anyone has any info on these. Are the new balls, or is it just new packaging.

Personally I like the added alignment lines but the font looks better. I will give it a shot.  

I felt the tour cg was just a fraction shorter off the driver for me. But I have a decent swing speed and felt I may have been over compressing it. 

A welcome surprise. Tour X (prior gen) was an incredible ball for the price. Still have my course record with Tour X. But I can't justify trading in my "buck a ball" deal for better brands with these. I'm glad they're releasing a "soft" version, too. Lot of people out there really do enjoy playing with the marshmallow feeling balls.

I really like the Maxfli Tour cg.  I bought 4 doz. box when they were $105 and had the $20 off coupon.  I had bought the 2 for $60 first to try them out.  I still have 4 doz.  HOWEVER, For $35-$40/doz. opens up the door to a multitude of balls to choose from.  The TM Tour Response for instance.  I really like that ball.  If your SS is in excess of 105-110 this ball is not for you but 90-100 it works great, feels great.  That being said, I have the last of my 4 kids in grad school.  Other 3 have their masters already.  I'm just a blue collar guy and I am looking for the most economical ball I can find that fit into the specs I like.  I'm even considering going back to a 2 pc. ball (Cut Red are a phenomenal ball for $12.99/doz.).

I may grab them if I have a coupon or the price drops, but knowing they are made in the same factory as VICE tells you all you need to know and you have to play the price game as the quality has to be pretty similar and we know based on testing, the results compared to the VICE are almost exact. 

I wonder if the TourS will be available in yellow. And, is it really like the AVX with a different flight than the other two or is it just softer?

I was specifically talking about Vice balls as mentioned a few times. Z starts and many others are always discounted to $40 per dozen and I've always found Bridgestone deals. Maxfli is a house brand ball made at the same factories as many other DTC balls so why pay for the most expensive DTC ball when others are exactly the same.

Vice will have a price increase, don't worry!

Well, until they do.....They are $6.00-$7.00 cheaper a dozen for virtually the same ball.

But, you can walk right in at pick it up at your local DSG/GG. Plus, you get points for discounts. Vice is at Target. But, stock is very limited. It's great if you like a Vice gold ball, lol.

True....I'll likely continue to play the Maxfli Tour as needed.  When I need to resupply bulk is when I'll need to consider my options.

This true if you happen to live near a DSG/GG.  They don't have nearly as many stores as Target and Walmart where you can find Vice balls.  DSG/GG shipping is typically going to be faster than shipping from the Vice web site though.

I’ve played Maxfli Tour balls exclusively ever since they introduced the 2021 version. Prior to switching I played the ProV1 for several years. In my opinion (and verified by a reputable published ball test) I’ve found the Maxfli Tour to equal the ProV1’s performance in many areas. I play often enough that I estimate to save about $400/yr on balls. I just picked up 2 Dzn of the 2023 Maxfli Tour for $70 (used to be 2 Dzn for $60). I’ve only played 1 round with 2023 ball, but first impressions are good. I definitely need to play a few more rounds with the new ball before saying too much. Maxfli is advertising faster ball speeds with changes to the core & mantel. 2021 ball compression was 85. 2023 ball compression is 90. 

Ive been playing a mixture of the 23' and 21' maxfli tours the past couple rounds.  I am not really consistent enough to be able to tell a difference yet.  Hit some great and some terrible shots with both haha!  Love the more simple text on the new model but otherwise looking forward to some in depth performance comparisons. 

I agree with you about Maxfli removing the 2 lines and going with simple text. I like to mark the ball myself with a red line (180*). 

Played Pro v1 exclusively last few years.  Noticed a playing partner using this maxfli ball instead of his usual pro v.  Have to say this ball does everything well.  Only negative for me is the markings look cheap. Recorded 3 of my lowest rounds using the maxfli Tour.  Give it a try.   

Down to my last 2 sleeves of 2021 Tours. Trying to decide if I want to use some credit on the 2023 version or put it against 2023 Titleist. I just wish they would bring the 4 dozen pack in the new version at say $119. Definitely be in for that.

I bought a dozen of the Tour Soft and Tour X and when I added them to my cart and went to check out shows a “Limited Time” sale of 1 for 39.99, 2 for $70, or 4 for $119.99. Don’t they always show “Limited Time” sale though? 

Yeah, i don't ever recall them not being "on sale" last year. 

Good to see that the 4 dozen price is the same.  I may have to buy 4 dozen now.  I've only played the Tour, I should try the Tour X. Do they have yellow yet? 

DSG/GG's house brands are always on sale.

To be honest, I bet the sales tailed off with the higher pricing.  Vice just increased the per dozen cost by $1.00  for 5+ or a $5.00 increase on a 5 dozen order.  Sounds reasonable.  With the $7.00 shipping (to NY) comes to $31.40/doz. w/o tax

If you play a premium golf ball there’s a good chance the Maxfli Tour X hasn’t been on your radar. It probably should be, however, as the Tour X offers exceptional performance at a price point that belies all it has to offer golfers.

A low compression ball with a matte finish aimed at golfers with slow to moderate swing speeds. Don’t expect market leading driver distance, but it impressed with irons and offers a soft, responsive feel around the greens and comes in four color options.

While the StaightFli shares a similar name to the SoftFli, they are two very different golf balls. Most notably, the StraightFli is a firmer feeling ball, which should appeal to players who enjoy auditory feedback on full shots. Additionally, the StraightFli features an octahedron dimple pattern.

The Maxfli Tour joins the Tour X as one of the two premium golf balls in Maxfli’s current lineup. The Tour model features a three-piece construction and urethane cover, which combine to promote low spin and distance in the long game along with high spin and soft feel on and around the greens. This ball also features a larger, redesigned core that is built to create more ball speed off the tee, like some of the options featured on our best balls for distance guide. It has also has been CG balanced to increase consistency on all shots, and from a color standpoint, is available in Gloss White, Matte White, and Gloss Yellow. 

Compared to the Tour X, we loved the level of spin on offer here. And during testing, we felt we could get a lot of traction on this ball in any condition and from any kind of lie. The control was exceptional and when playing chip shots, we loved how easy it was to flight and stop on the greens. The Maxfli Tour wasn't the greatest in terms of the distance on offer but it was extremely accurate and we found it very easy to work this ball, moving it left and right easily. It also comes with a very soft feel which is interesting because of how durable the ball is. From our testing sessions, we feel this is a great golf ball for low-spin players who need all the help they can get when it comes to greenside control.

Maxfli Tour X Golf Ball

The Tour X is one of two premium golf ball offerings from Maxfli but it differs quite a bit from the other option, the Tour model. Most notably the Tour X is a four-piece construction and it features a slightly larger core, design elements that have been utilized to deliver low spin off the tee, making it a great choice for players with faster swing speeds. 

The Tour X does, however, utilize a urethane cover to provide ample control from 100 yards but it does feel firmer than the Tour. The X model also features center of gravity balancing to ensure optimal performance and it is available in Gloss White and Matte White colors. It offers exceptional performance at a price point that makes it a fantastic option for any golfer aspiring to play a tour quality golf ball. Having tested these balls on the course, we found the Tour X excelled the most in its long game distance. 

We enjoyed the sensation it offered off the tee and also liked the higher flights it offered when we chose to play with our driver. The Tour X was also stable in the wind and shots into strong headwinds still yielded significant rollouts. On full approach shots, it was explosive off the face and we had no issues with the stopping power on offer here. The Tour X also felt very nice off the putter, and we particularly enjoyed the double-lined alignment aid on the golf ball. It's cover was also very durable and in our opinion, that makes it an excellent golf ball for any player looking to get the best value out of their ball.

Maxfli SoftFli Golf Ball

As its name would suggest, the Maxfli SoftFli provides golfers with an incredibly soft feel on every shot they play. In fact, the SoftFli’s compression of 35 makes it one of the softest golf balls available . That said, its core has been redesigned to promote low spin off the tee, while Maxfli’s icosahedron dimple pattern promotes higher launch conditions, a combination that helps players maximize carry and total distance in the long game. The SoftFli lineup also features one of the most expansive color collections available in the golf ball market, including a matte pink ball that is especially popular with female players.

During our testing sessions, the SoftFli felt solid when we took our driver to it. It may not be suited to players with faster swing speeds but the flight was high and straight and we found it offered up a very responsive feel. Compared to some premium models , we thought it didn't check up quite as quickly when chipping in from tighter lies around the greens. We did, however, love how well the ball rolled off the putter face, even if it tended to ping off at extra speed when struck with the putter. Again we loved how soft this golf ball was, and the side stamp design on the ball that features two thick lines either side of the SoftFli logo was a very handy addition, that improved our accuracy off the tee and on the greens.

Maxfli StraightFli Golf Ball

While the StaightFli shares a similar name to the SoftFli, they are two very different golf balls. Most notably, the StraightFli is a firmer feeling ball, which should appeal to players who enjoy auditory feedback on full shots. Additionally, the StraightFli features an octahedron dimple pattern that consists of dimples that vary in size, a design that MaxFli believes optimizes launch and promotes increased accuracy on full shots. The StraightFli, while it feels firmer than the SoftFli, does offer similar greenside control, and it is available in Gloss White, Matte Green, and Matte Orange. That makes this a great option for high handicap golfers looking for a durable option that will deliver excellent ball flights and forgiveness off the face of the club. 

Maxfli TriFli Golf Ball

The Maxfli TriFli is one of the more unique golf balls on the market. It’s a three-piece construction but unlike most three- or four-piece golf balls it does not have a urethane cover. Instead, the TriFli utilizes a soft ionomer cover, which allows this golf ball to come in at an impressive price for the tee-to-green performance it provides. While it is one of the best value golf balls on the market, it has a compression rating of just 45, which promotes soft feel with every club, making it great for players with slower swing speeds. But the TriFli’s mantle layer helps provide faster ball speeds off the tee that defy the soft feel. The three layers also help create spin in the short game but the TriFli won’t spin as much as the Tour models.

Is Maxfli a good golf ball brand?

Maxfli golf balls have enjoyed increasing popularity in recent years thanks in large part to the fact that there are different models available to meet the needs of any caliber of golfer and those models always are competitive in terms of performance. Maxfli have three balls in their premium range of golf balls, the Tour X, Tour and Tour S. While Maxfli previously have not been a name associated with the best golf balls , their Tour X is definitely a challenger to the Titleist Pro V1x and TaylorMade TP5x .

There is more competition than ever when it comes to the best premium golf balls, with more brands challenging the big guns and producing golf balls which perform well but do not come at as much of a cost.

Which Maxfli Tour golf ball should I play?

Maxfli offers three different balls in their Tour range, the Tour S, Tour and Tour X. All Tour range golf balls by Maxfli are excellent premium options depending on what you want from your ball, where you play, and your desired flight.

The Tour X is the only 4-piece urethane cover construction golf ball in Maxfli’s tour range. It is the hardest of the three but still a soft feeling golf ball. The Tour X has been designed to produce the most spin on approach shots by delivering a higher ball flight than the Tour S and Tour ball.

The Maxfli Tour golf ball sports a 3-piece urethane cover construction which still delivers low spin off the tee and high spin around the greens. The Tour ball is softer than the Tour X and flies slightly lower and produces less spin with the irons.

Last of Maxfli’s three Tour options is the Tour S which is also a 3-piece urethane cover construction golf ball which provides the softest feel of all the Maxfli Tour range golf balls. The Tour has a lower ball flight and spin on approach shots is slightly lower – better for links golf and windy conditions.

Maxfli Tour X availability

The Tour golf balls are available in white and yellow. The balls are traditionally numbered from 1 to 4.

Testers Announced!

We are once again offering the Maxfli Tour series golf balls for member testing. However, this time around, there is a slight twist: Maxfli has added a new feature to this series.

First, let’s recap the Maxfli Tour X golf ball and its standout performance in the 2023 MyGolfSpy Ball Test.

Both the Maxfli Tour and Maxfli Tour X performed really well in testing. But the Maxfli Tour X  was recognized for producing a higher ball flight for high-speed golfers while also cracking the top-10 fastest balls for all speed categories and topping the low swing speed driver chart.

Maxfli also earned best direct-to-consumer ball and best DTC brand quality in our recent Golf Ball Quality Awards of 2023.

Hello to all the golfer's out there!

My name is P.J., my closest friends shortened it to Peej and somewhere along the way it became Peejer.  Yes, much longer now...

I'm originally from Akron, Ohio - but joined the Air Force after High School and lived (and golfed) around the world.  I 'retired' from the Air Force in 2004 and settled in Colorado where I went to work for Lockheed Martin as a Software/Systems Engineer.  Other than a short two-year stint in the Destin/Fort Walton Beach area, I've stayed in Colorado.  To help appease my desire for golf in the winter months - I put a simulator in my garage back in 2017.

You might say I'm somewhat of a golf fanatic, despite working full-time still - I manage to get in 100+ rounds a year.  Last year was 111 rounds, in 2022 it was 123.  My highest total was 138 in back in 2016!  Another fun fact, despite the cold Colorado winters, I've managed to play at least one round every month of the year - this May will be my 20th year in a row.  Granted, December, January and February can be challenging, I've had to drive as far as 2 hours south to find a course open, but so far (fingers crossed), my streak continues!!

I've played the Maxfli Tour balls before and really liked them.  I try to pick them up when the 4-dozen package goes on sale.  It's hard to beat the performance, quality and price combination.  I was most recently selected as a tester for the 2023 Titleist Whitebox Testing .  Having a simulator at home, I have the ability to do real numbers comparison - plus take the balls out on the course for real playability.  This test I plan to show the numbers comparison against the current Titleist ProV1, as the Maxfli Tour is the equivalent ball for comparison.

The addition of the "MAX ALIGN" technology should suit my game.  My favorite ball right now is the Srixon Q-Star Tour Divide (Orange/Yellow) and I line up not only my putts, but also on the tee box to ensure I'm squared up to my target.  As an Engineer, I live in the numbers and I have my past years worth of putting stats for comparison.  It'll be interesting and fun to see how it all works out.  Additionally, I'll see if I can beat my putting record on my indoor putting green.  I'm looking forward to it.

I haven't received the balls yet, but I wanted to get this thread started.  I'm off to Mesquite, Nevada in the morning to play 4 rounds of golf there.  I'll be back on Tuesday and I'm hopeful the balls will be waiting for me when I arrive.

Welcome Back!

I’ve been doing some homework on the 2023 version of the Maxfli Tour and yes, they’ve made some changes.  The most exciting change is the new ‘Max Align Technology’ which provides a visual aid for lining up putts and tee shots.  I’m glad to see that 3-piece Urethane Maxfli Tour ball continued with the Center of Gravity (CG) balancing to ensure you ball doesn’t stray from your line due to any manufacturing variables.  Sorry folks, can’t blame this ball for your wayward shots!  Additional changes include the introduction of the 318 tetrahedron dimple patten across the ball.  This new pattern is designed to decrease spin off the long clubs and increase the aerodynamics for longer distance.  This ball is a little softer than its predecessor.  This ball now clocks in with an 85 compression, compared to the 92 compression of the 2019 ball.    

I’ve included the specifications from Maxfli so you’ll have some idea what to expect from each ball in their Tour series.

First Impressions (8 out of 10)

When I first opened up the Maxfli box, it’s apparent that they take their packaging seriously.  The text is sharp and clean, along with some gold (for the Tour version) adds a nice polish to the look, without looking gaudy.  The box contains some useful information, similar to what I indicate above, along with picture of the ball and the explanation of the “CENTER OF GRAVITY BLANCED WITH MAX ALIGN TECHNOLOGY”.  It states:  “Patented balancing process combined with new MAX ALIGN alignment aid improves consistency and accuracy with a dynamic visual roll”.

Looking more closely at the ball, they are a high-gloss finish.  In recent years I’ve personally gone to a matte finish, but the performance of the ball could easily sway me back to high gloss.  The alignment arrows (3 in total) stand out immediately.  My initial thought was I’m not sure I’m going to like that, it may be too big for my tastes.  But as you can see from some of the other balls I play – I may have been too quick to judge.  The concern of the large alignment aid is why I deduct a few points from my initial “First Impressions” score.  I’m taking them out tomorrow for a live test on the course, so I’ll update these comments and score, if warranted.

There are three distinct, wide arrows to help you line up your shots.  As a player who like to line up his balls on both putts and tee shots, I’m really intrigued by the idea!!

Finally, above I talk about the tetrahedron dimple pattern.  Well, probably like you – I said, super…but what does that mean?!? 

In geometry, a tetrahedron is a polyhedron composed of four triangular faces, six straight edges, and four vertices.  Still baffled?  Yeah, me too.  I stared at this ball in the light for quite some time and I’m not certain if it’s my eyes playing tricks on me or not, but I do seem to note a pattern similar to the hex look of some Callaway balls.

Does that mean it will help the ball really fly longer and straighter?  That remains to be seen, but I’m definitely interested in finding out!

So that’s my first impressions.  I will say I’m really excited about testing these balls.  Maxfli produces a top-quality, tour level ball and if the alignment aid helps me make more putts, then I’m in.

Aesthetics (9 out of 10)

Out of the box, the looks of this ball can be a little off-putting (no pun intended).  The 3 arrow are large and obvious.  I initially didn’t think I’d like the design, believing it’d be too big a distraction.  After only a few shots, I came to really like it.  I line up my putts using the arrow, using the middle arrow as the primary alignment, with the first and third to confirm my line.  Personally, I think this really adds to getting the ball on line.  I also used the arrows on the tee box to ensure I was lined up properly.  The only downside is it takes away one of my excuses for missing a shot because I wasn’t lined up correctly.

Durability was really good, after 2 rounds with the same ball, there was minimal wear.  Granted, I didn’t hit any trees or cart paths, but I was in several bunkers.  In the 3rd round, I hit a couple of trees and could barely see marks.  So, I’d say the durability of this ball was really good for me.  In the pictures below, the ball looks like it’s yellowing a bit – but to be clear, it’s a reflection of my camera lighting skills and not the ball.  It still looks bright white.

The Numbers (19 out of 20)

The Maxfli Tour ball is a 3-piece, 318 dimple urethane golf ball.  Its on the firmer side, measuring in at 85 compression.  For me, the ball felt softish, yet had a solid feel to it.  I’ve tried to play ‘soft’ golf balls, but they feel mushy to me.  I really enjoyed this ball.  My typical gamer, the Srixon Q-Star Tour Divide comes in at 69 compression, but coming off the clubface, they feel very similar.  From a putting standpoint, in my on-course testing, I averaged 32 putts a round.  In my previous four round before switching to the Maxfli Tour MAX ALIGN ball, I averaged 34.75 putts per round.  There are lots of variables in golf, but do I think this ball help you make more putts?  Yes, it does.

The primary update for the Maxfli Tour ball this year was the addition of the MAX ALIGN graphic on the ball, but as we all want to know – how does it perform?

My swing speed is considered ‘medium’ with my driver varying between 95 and 100 mph.  As such, the driver data below (compliments of MyGolfSpy) show the Maxfli Tour ball with some really solid numbers very similar to the Titleist ProV1.

Very similar story here, this ball performs stat for stat against the Titleist ProV1.  Rock solid performance at half the price of the top ball in golf!

On The Course (18 out of 20)

On-course play is exactly what you would expect from a ‘Tour Ball’.  As stated above, the numbers are spot-on and that was certainly the case for me.  Distance off the tee was a little better than my usual gamer.  I was concerned this ball would spin a little too much for me, as I like to play low-spin balls.  But I actually had one of my best ‘off the tee’ days with this ball, hitting 14 of 18 fairways.  Approach shots had ball flight that I’m accustomed to and held the green nicely.  I’d say this ball plays VERY closely to a ProV1.  Using this ball for 7 rounds, I posted 4 rounds in the 70’s!  This is definitely some solid numbers for a guy whose handicap floats between 8 and 10.

The Good, the bad, the inbetween (19 out of 20)

Other reviewers commented on durability, but I did not have an issue with that at all.  I think it’s fair to expect wear/tear on a ball if it hits a tree or cart path, but I had no issues with shots that hit grass or sand.  I took this ball out on the course on some very windy Spring days with 20+mph winds.  I was pretty impressed with how well it cut through the wind.  My playing partner's also commented how the wind didn't seem to affect my ball as much as theirs.  I'd say if you play in the wind, you seriously need to give this ball a try for yourself.

Play it or Trade it? (20 out of 20)

Admittedly, when I first saw the arrows – I thought they were distracting.  However, as stated above, that went away very quickly.    The Maxfli Tour ball hasn’t changed from last year and that’s a great thing!  It performs exactly as I like.  Great distance, spin control and a soft, yet solid feel to it.  Maxfli improved the alignment aide with the new 3 arrows and it improved my putting by two strokes for my average in the last 7 rounds.

I’ve played the Maxfli Tour ball previously and liked it, but there wasn’t enough there to pull me away from my Srixon Q-Star Tour Divide - I like how easy it is to align the Srixon Divide ball, but if I’m being honest, it was a little too soft for me.  Now with the Maxfli Tour MAX ALIGN element added, I’m back in the camp of this is a ‘must have’ golf ball.  I think I'd like the arrows a little thicker, but that's something a Sharpie can help me fix quickly. The ball actually performed better than my usual gamer.  When you couple that with the immense value that you get from this ball (~$30 when buy 4 dozen at a time) and you just can’t beat it!  MyGolfSpy ball test proves the consistency and quality manufacturing process.  For me, as an Engineer, it's all about the numbers – when I do the math, this is a no-brainer.  If you struggle with putting, this may be a ball that helps you too.  I quickly got over the initial ‘shock’ factor when I saw it and love the new graphics now.

I used this ball in 3 tournaments during my testing period and I'm convinced - I’m switching over! (See my Signature line below).

Introduction  

Hello Forum members and once again it is an honor to be chosen to test the new Maxfli Tour with  Max Align Technology. If its good enough for Lexi... Well maybe it will improve my game! My name is Cliff and this is my 2nd testing opportunity from MGS (my first one was with the Sqairz Bold Golf Shoe). I reside in Danvers, MA which is about 10 miles north of Boston. I have been fortunate enough to have been playing golf for over 50 years and have a Love/ Hate relationship with this addictive hobby. I am a member at a very challenging, unforgiving, non-pretentious private club in North Reading, MA (all 18 holes have either "out of bounds" or some type of hazard). I am an 8 handicap and play 3-4 times per week. I recently retired from my financial advisory practice that my youngest son will eventually takeover. My other son works in the Pharmaceutical industry and has blessed me with 2 granddaughters.

I currently play the new Callaway Paradym woods that came out last year and made the switch from Mizuno irons to the Paradym irons as well. Still getting used to the stronger lies on the irons. After reading the reviews about Maxfli last season, I switched from my usual Titleist Pro v1 ball to the Maxfli Tour around August 2023. I experimented with the Maxfli Tour X and the Tour S but for my unusually high ball flight and moderate swing speed (95-100mph) the Tour model was the best fit.

I recently installed a putting green with 4 holes in my backyard and since New England weather is so unpredictable this time of year, my golf club probably won't open for another 3-5 weeks. Most of my reviews will be focused on the new Max Align technology and show how it relates to putting. I'll probably only be able to get on the local public courses once a week as some of them have slowly started to open.  I hope you will find my feedback to be informative as well as entertaining. FIRST IMPRESSIONS/UNBOXING 8/10

I figured I'd start this post with a picture of the latest "ambassador to the Maxfli Golf ball" with something that might get your attention. Thank you, Lexi, for posting these pictures on Instagram! Ok, now for the "boring" photos!  Rather than post pictures of the box that they came in, I decided to show some pictures comparing it to the previous year model.

Since I live in New England, the weather has been pretty dismal since I received the new balls and I haven't been able to roll them on my putting green yet. My first impression of the alignment aid is pretty favorable but I want to hold off judgement until I see what it looks like while putting. The arrows are printed 3 times across the ball and therefore the Maxfli Logo and the number only appears once.

The 2-dozen balls that I received were in a plain FedEx box and thought that a more personalized letter (instead of an email requesting updates on the website) would have been more appropriate.  Last year when I started using the Maxfli Ball, I was made aware that the Maxfli Golf balls are only available for purchase at Dicks/Golf Galaxy. Not sure why the exclusivity of this decision? Looking forward to warmer/drier days to give them a test drive!

Final Review

As mentioned earlier, I have been playing the 2023 Maxfli Tour ball since last summer. I continue to be a huge advocate for the latest version with the Max Alignment Technology. Initially I was concerned that the new graphics would be a distraction on fairway/approach shots but found that assessment to be nonexistent.  I’ve noticed that some of my fellow testers have added red sharpie marks on the alignment graphics and concur that this will enhance the feedback while putting. 

As for performance and durability, I am very impressed with all characteristics of the Tour model. I have also played the Tour X and S model but found the Tour ball to be more accommodating for my ball flight. Several of my colleagues comment about the high trajectory of my game but I am trying to reduce the apex and seem to get more distance with the Tour vs the other models. It’s only taken me 50 years to shallow my swing and create more lag! Also I have not experienced any unusual wear problems and have played in temperatures ranging from 35-85 degrees during the past 9 months. 

I wanted to compare the latest version of the Tour ball with the prior generation models and according to the simulator that I was using, performance numbers were almost exactly the same.  

As you can see from the above video, the graphics of the MAX ALIGN are very subtle but not distracting. My golf course does allow us to “play the ball up” if hit in the fairways during non-competitive events. This is definitely an advantage with the graphics on this ball to be able to aim the ball on the intended line for approach shots.

Other than the 2 hours of simulator time, my “On the Course “ testing was allocated to putting in my backyard putting green that I had professionally installed last year.  Since this ball was tested in 2023 by other forum members, the Max Align Technology is the only difference with the 2024 design.

The Good, The Bad, The Somewhere in the Middle   18/20

The Good… Make no mistake about it. This is a premium golf ball that will perform as well as the “Big Boys” and hold its own in every category (Distance, Feel, Spin,Ball Speed, etc.)

The Bad… Once a marquis player (like Lexi Thompson) wins a tournament playing this ball a couple of things will happen. The price of this ball will most likely escalate. Also since very few people are gaming this ball you won’t be the only one at your club playing it and pace of play may slow down if several people in your foursome switch to this ball. I kind of like the current exclusivity of this ball and I’m impressed with the performance. 

The Somewhere in the middle… I’m torn between the 2023 version and the latest Max Align Technology introduced this year. The graphics aren’t bold enough to give you a clear reading on rolling putts. Unless you color in the balls arrows, unfortunately you will not be able to see the alignment aides.

Hello all, my name is Tom. I’ve been in the Lafayette, Indiana area my entire life. (You’ve heard of Purdue University, right?) Aside from golf, I enjoy mountain biking and hiking. Basically, just being out in nature is good. I’ve been playing golf since the mid-1990s. In all honesty, I’ve never been good at driving the ball. Fairway woods and short irons are what I consider to be my strengths. Looking back, I don’t feel like my game has improved much through the years. I play when I can- maybe a time or two per month during the summer. I generally play the middle tees- in the 6,000 yard range. My scores average right around 100. I played with a friend in November of 2023 and he had multiple pars and even a few birdies during the round. That was when I decided that I wanted to improve my game. I bought a new set of clubs- TaylorMade M6. I went to the driving range multiple times this winter and even had a few lessons about improving my swing. I really do think things have improved. Now that we are getting back to warmer weather, I guess we are going to find out if I can apply those things while on the course.

Now here’s the exciting part- testing new golf balls! I am not dedicated to one brand/model of ball. I will often play whatever I find as I’m moving along through a course. I do prefer a soft golf ball. I’ve noticed that some models are softer than others, but my favorite local course has water on 10 of the holes, so balls don’t tend to spend much time with me. Water + high scores = me not wanting to waste a bunch of money on overpriced balls. Over the winter my wife surprised me with a pack of Vice Pro balls that she found on clearance at Sam’s Club. (We are both suckers for deals.) I also ended up with a free set of Callaway Chrome Soft Truvis balls when I got my clubs. Now I’ve got the Maxfli Tour Max Align balls as well. Decisions… Decisions… I’ve got new clubs AND new balls. You can see that much has changed for me over the winter.

With so many variables, it seems like it could be tough to give an accurate review for the Maxflis, but I’ve got a plan. During the four weeks of review time I’m planning on playing once per week. My plan is to play an entire round with only the Maxflis and then one round with 6 holes for each of the three new balls. Then I will play a mixed round for round #3 and go back to only Maxfli for #4. I will also use only the Maxflis to practice putting while at home to see if I can benefit from the claims made in the ball description. Multiple statements got my attention- “ MAX ALIGN alignment aid improves consistency and accuracy with a dynamic visual roll”, “ designed to help you line up your shots perfectly”, & “Aim with Confidence: Gain the confidence to hit your shots with precision and accuracy”. Well now, we ALL want to improve our game, right? You, me, and even Rory… 

FIRST IMPRESSIONS - 9/10

Yes, I am impressed. The box was nothing special, but I don't expect it to be. It's just a box. The ball and the alignment are the main objective here and the alignment aid was a pleasant surprise. I don't know why, but I was expecting the alignment arrow was going to be printed one time on the ball. It actually repeats three times around the ball, with "MAXFLI" taking the place of what could have been a fourth arrow. (See the short video.) There were a few tiny blemishes in the white paint and arrow marks, but nothing major. I was very surprised how yellow the Callaway looks in comparison to the MAXFLI. The dimples are interesting as well. The Vice has circular dimples. The Callaway has hexagons. The MAXFLI almost seem to be circles within hexagons. I do not have any way to accurately measure the balls, but the MAXFLI seems a bit bigger than the others. The MAXFLI feels harder and slicker than the other two as well. The Vice and Callaway seem sticky and soft to the touch. I have no idea how this will affect flight, but I'm going to find out soon!

Aesthetics (9/10)

For me, the packaging is fairly simple. There’s nothing too flashy, but a few nice graphics. I would almost describe it as “elegant”. Sometimes less is more. I would consider this to be a soft ball. It doesn’t feel like I’m hitting a rock. As for sound, most of my strikes were similar to that of other balls. There were a few times that I hit the ball and I got a higher pitched “tink” sound, which made me feel like I was doing something right. As I mentioned in my first impressions, The MAXFLI feels harder and slicker than the other balls that I used alongside of it. After playing multiple rounds with this ball, I did not notice any issues with durability. I hit multiple trees and cart paths, and the balls only had a few minor scuffs.

The Numbers (10/20)

They say numbers don’t lie. I played two rounds with only the Maxfli. On a different round I played 6 holes each with the Maxfli Tour Max Align, Callaway Chrome Soft, and Vice Pro balls. I’ve tried to look at the numbers from several different angles. There are a few things that catch my attention when I compare the Maxfli to stats from previous years. Putts per hole in the past has been 2.05. With the Maxfli it comes out to be 1.98, so that does appear to be a bit better. The Maxfli gave me the best results for drive distance as well. My numbers showed a drive distance improvement of 16 yards!

Overall score is what really counts at the end of the day. I did not notice a huge change in my overall score. On my favorite course, I scored three higher than my average for the past few years. On the course when I played the three different balls, the Maxfli was the worst by score and also when compared to par.

I’m torn as to what to give this section for a score. It seems that the ball was able to improve my game in some aspects, but the score actually got worse. 10 seems fair.    

On The Course (15/20)

Drive distance? Better. Fairway hit percentage? Much better. My personal history is 29%, but the Maxfli helped me get 46% of fairways hit. Workability around the green? I feel that I hit many excellent approach shots with this ball.

I also noticed an interesting flight pattern. It seemed to me that multiple shots that started off looking to be a strong slice were somehow able to straighten themselves out. A guy that I played with noticed this on a few shots as well. I gave him a sleeve of the Maxflis and he agreed that it is very forgiving on mis-hits. I think my fairways hit rate went up partly due to this. I do like the feel of putting with this ball. Many of my putts were very close on distance.

Here is where we get to my dilemma. The key update for this ball is the markings. I tried to use them on every shot- tee shots, putts, and everything in between. The arrow does seem to help align shots. I have an Odyssey two-ball putter, so I was able to use that along with the markings to work on the alignment of putts. This could possibly be what helped me lower putts per hole. However, I feel that the markings are not heavy enough to provide meaningful feedback. As soon as I have hit the ball, I am not able to see how it is rolling. I feel that the repeating logos on balls such as the Callaway Truvis allow me to see how the ball is rolling. The markings on the Maxfli are so thin that they disappear as soon as I’ve hit the ball. To be continued...

The Good, the bad, the somewhere in the middle (10/20)

This allowed me to line up my putts and also gave visual feedback to see if I had hit the ball on the proper line.

I have no idea how Maxfli ended up with their design. I could throw out a bunch of theories, but they would only be guesses. My feeling in the end is that the markings need some work to be able to provide beneficial feedback on how the ball was struck.

Play it or Trade it? (15/ 20)

This ball seemed to help my game in various ways, EXCEPT score. Nice flight, soft to hit, good quality. I can’t figure out how it could help with drive distance and lower putts per hole and make my score worse. I guess that leaves all the shots in between the tee and the green. After typing that sentence, I went back through the shots on the hole maps on Garmin. I had several holes with scores of 8 and even a 9! I struggled with the 3 wood one day and this seems to be the downfall. Maybe it was just an off day. The last round I played with this ball had many excellent shots with the 3 wood. Maybe I need to give this ball another chance. I’ve got some left in the bag, so I will continue to use them. I have a few dozen brand new balls from other brands that I will also use this summer. When it comes time to buy balls, I will consider the Maxflis, but I have not yet made the final decision on what I will buy.

This ball is very intriguing. It helped my game in several ways. Sadly, my score went up. Maybe it was an off day that derailed the whole thing for me. Let’s go back to Maxfli’s claim at the beginning. Did it improve consistency? I think so. Dynamic visual roll? Not so much. I had to do some work to make the markings better. “Aim with Confidence: Gain the confidence to hit your shots with precision and accuracy”. In all honesty, I’m not entirely convinced.

Let me introduce myself - Tony, 57, Mason City, Iowa.  Big Minnesota Twins fan (see profile pic and username) My local course just opened on Monday the 26th of February.  Earliest ever, but on Tuesday it was 8 degrees overnight and we had snow flurries, so much for that!   This weekend is supposed to warm up and hope to get out again.  Appreciate the opportunity to be a tester.  Thanks, MyGolfSpy.

I am a daily grinder.  My wife gets up at 5:30 am to work out, so I go to the golf course!  I play at Highland Park Golf Course, a public, city-owned course.  I take pics that catch my eye and post them on my Facebook page, and have a faithful following, probably looking to see what the weather is like that day!  I tee off at 6 am every day by myself, have a cart, and can usually get 18 holes done in an hour and forty-five minutes.  Short drive home, shower, and off to work by 8:30.  

My handicap currently sits at 4.3, which I think is way too low!  I can go play other courses and struggle to break 80. Highland Park is 6219yds with a rating of 70.1 and a slope of 119.  I am usually in the 70's and shot my personal best there last year with a 70.  I am pretty consistent off the tee, 230ish, and usually not in too much trouble.  I struggle with my approach shots, but have a pretty good short game, known for my touch around the greens with my punch and run 8-iron.  As you can see in my signature, I don't play the latest-greatest equipment, but am probably due for different irons soon.  

My ball of choice is Vice Pro - why?  Probably because of the offers that Vice puts out there.  And at my local golf shop, they have been selling them for $30.  I can usually get through a week without having to replace my ball.  The course doesn't have cart paths on all the holes, so my ball doesn't take a beating.  If I do hit a tree or a path and there is a scuff, I will replace it because I can't afford to lose any more distance!  

How will I be testing - 

I usually, should probably say never, align my ball to the hole or ever mark it, because I am the only one out there, and I leave the pin in.  Saves time and it works for me.  So this will be a good test to see if I can improve my putting by using the new Align system on the Maxfli.  If I can get out on my course again, I will set up some distances and test it vs my gamer (not aligning) and maybe even the EXTREME alignment aid of the Tour Response. 

Simulator - hope to get to a simulator and do some testing - distance, spin, launch, accuracy, etc.  

On Course - I am fortunate to be heading to Jacksonville, FL with the local Junior College golf team over spring break and will be playing 4 days in a row - I will swap out my gamer for a round or two and see how it performs, especially on the short game, since I am such a scrambler.

FINAL REVIEW

First Impressions/Unboxing 10 out of 10 

2 dozen balls arrived via a FedEx box the other day.  Nice-looking boxes, as you can see in the pics.  Shiny white boxes with nice gold and silver fonts and graphics.  The black Maxfli logo on the ball is bold and bigger than most logos I would say, but what sets these apart is the MAX ALIGN system that is carried across the ball 3 times and is only interrupted by the logo.  Very shiny gloss white as promised.

I am testing the TOUR model which is softer than the TOUR X but not as soft as the Tour S.  I did a bounce test listening for sound as I bounced a Vice Pro, a Titleist ProV1x, and a Callaway SuperSoft from the same height simultaneously with the Maxfli Tour.  The Vice Pro and the Maxfli Tour were almost identical, as was the ProV1x -maybe being a little firmer sounding.  And as expected the SuperSoft was the marshmallowist sounding of them all.  Looking at the data provided by MyGolfSpy regarding compression this sound test confirmed what I was hearing.  When I get out on the course again - damn Iowa weather - it should be a good test.  Vice Pro vs Maxfli Tour.

Aesthetics -  10 out of 10

You can see for youself how the packaging looks - I tried to give you every angle possible!  It looks and feels like a quality ball.  Looking at the number from last years test - it is.  It sounded very much like my gamer, Vice Pro, off all my clubs.   One thing I will say is that I think the MAXFLI logo is a bit large with everything else going on with this ball.   

The Numbers -  20 out of 20

When I did my driver test it performed as well as my gamer.  Distances were very close and it held up against the Pro V1x as well.  

I am not sure you could get closer numbers than this.  Carry, ball speed launch angle.  Apparently I have a very boring swing!

On The Course -  16 out of 20

The picture above describes golf in Iowa in April.  I was able to get out on my home course a couple of times and managed to finagle my way on a golf trip to Jacksonville, Florida for 4 days of golf.  Thank goodness.  

Off the Tee – This ball equals my gamer off the tee - there may have been a little more height on a few shots, but depending on the conditions that day, it performed great.  

Approach – My weakness - I would love to say that it could tell it spun more or held the greens more - but I really struggle hitting greens so this wasn't a good test for me.  

Around the Green – I am a bump and run guy, with my 8 iron, and it reacted as I assumed it would and felt the same as my gamer.  I chipped in a couple of times in Florida so it didn't really throw me off using the Maxlfi Tour.  

Putting – This is where the deductions come in for me.

There is a lot going on - using my current putter, with the lines and dots and such.  I thought it would help on shorter putts to use the alignment on the Maxfli, but it didn't.  It made me stand over putts longer to make sure it was lined up right, instead of just hitting the putts.  Out of the 2 rounds I used it compared to my gamer, I saved 1 putt.  But I also chipped in twice that round, so I am throwing that out!  

The Good, The Bad, the In Between-  16 out of 20

I have no issues with the performance of this ball, it is quality and holds up as well as any other ball I have played.  For me it was just the time I spent standing over the putts and my thought process when the line weren't "lining" up in the fairway on approach shots.  

It's Pointing The Wrong Way!  A little disconcerting for me standing over a 180 yd shot with my hybrid when I am facing bunkers on each side and water on the right!  I think I got in my head a little bit with this one.  And was overthinking it.  

Play it or trade it?   15 out of 20

Would I play these balls?  Probably not....just don't work for me.  I can honestly say I may use them in a best shot scenario where I already know the line that someone has shown me, but on a daily basis I don't think I will play them.   Of course I will play them til the two dozen that were provided for me are gone or I give them to someone else to give them a shot - would be interested in knowing their thoughts.  Reading the other reviews on here, I think we are 50/50 split on them.  

I appreciate being selected to do this review and the process was a lot of fun.  The Maxfli Tour Align is a quality ball.   $40 per dozen - and only at Dick's Sporting Goods makes it that much harder for me to get my hands on them IF I was going to use them on a daily basis.  That, and the mind mess I get standing over a putt looking at those arrows, I just can't pull the trigger.

Ball  VICE Tour

Hello, fellow MGS Forum members!  I'm excited to be chosen to test the new Maxfli Tour ball with the enhanced alignment aid.  I have used the Tour and it has performed well for me.  As a fan of alignment aids I am eager to see how this one looks and works.

A little about me.  I live in central Michigan, the "middle of the Mitten" as we say * ; am retired from 42 years of university teaching in Texas, Arizona and Michigan; took up the game at the age of 40; play a lot of 9-hole rounds; and, walk whenever possible (pushcart or 1/2 set in small carry bag).

This will be my second formal test opportunity for MGS (SwingU App was the first).  I've also posted unofficial reviews of Sunday Golf El Camino carry bag, and the Maxvert 1 Driver which can be found in other threads.

As I said, I am a big fan of alignments aids.  Perhaps because I learned to play as an adult in the early 1990s I had no preconceptions of what golf balls "should" look like -- white, orange, yellow, two-tone Pings -- all were being played by my friends.  My current faves are these:

The T-shaped alignment aid on the Titleist Tour Soft looks very much like the handmade marking I use for balls without a bold side stamp.  I jumped at the TaylorMade Tour Response when it first came out and still enjoy using it off the tee and for feedback on putts.  The Srixon Q-Star Tour Divide is fun to play -- vertically on putts to show roll, as well as on the tee (yellow side to the left to encourage a draw, yellow side to the right to encourage a fade).  Again, maybe because I didn't know any better when learning the game, I am not distracted by what direction the logo/side stamp/stripe/color way is facing when playing from the fairway, rough or sand.  However, I can understand if it does distract others.

Golf courses in the area are still mostly closed although the word is that my home course will open on Saturday!  Hoping the new Maxflis will arrive in time to give them a test this weekend.

* Okay, okay -- full disclosure:  I actually live about 20 miles north of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan so y'all geography purists would be accurate to call me on the "middle of the Mitten" claim.

I’m sure many Forum members know that a little less than year ago the Maxfli line of Tour balls (Tour, Tour X, and Tour S) underwent member testing ( https://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/59180-maxfli-tour-series-golf-balls-2023-forum-review/#comment-922782 ).  

This year Maxfli has introduced “MAX ALIGN Technology” on the  white Tour and Tour X versions but not, at least as far as I can tell, on the Tour S version.  According to the packaging for the Maxfli Tour, this “new MAX ALIGN alignment aid improves consistency and accuracy with a dynamic visual roll.”  

As a big fan of alignment aids — especially TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe and Srixon Q-Star Tour Divide — I jumped at the chance to be a tester of Maxfli’s foray into bolder alignment aids.

Unlike typical ball reviews, we were asked to emphasize the success of the MAX ALIGN Technology in our reviews.  As someone who has struggled to find (and remain committed to) a single ball I feel somewhat compelled to go beyond just the alignment aid in describing how this ball does/does not work for me.  

This past winter has been my first opportunity to work with a simulator on a regular basis so I had been able to maintain some semblance of a swing going when March rolled around and this testing opp came about.  Luckily enough, the Michigan weather in early March gave me the chance to use the ball on course (approx. 81 holes) although the greens have not been cut/rolled since last November.  Unfortunately, the last 3 weeks have been colder and wetter so less outdoor play.

For my indoor testing I chose to put the Maxfli Tour up against four other non-tour level 3-piece urethane balls:  TaylorMade Tour Response, Titleist Tour Speed, Srixon Q-Star Tour, and Wilson Triad (I told you I had commitment issues!). 

Conclusion -- Total Score:  84.5/100

[ Yep, I’m gonna start with the summation so you don’t have to “scroll to the chase” and can decide whether or not you want to look at the rest of the details. ]

The Maxfli Tour with MAX ALIGN Technology:

(1) is a very good quality ball at a reasonable price point;

(2) is a mid-launch and, usually, a mid-spin ball at moderate swing speeds [see individual club data elsewhere in this thread];

(3) is a durable ball (photos below after equivalent of 27 holes indoors);

(4) has a dependable ball flight on course and adequate short range spin;

(5) has an almost 360° alignment aid that functions nicely to set ball position on the tee and the green without being overly distracting (the design is much more subtle when viewed from the golf stance than when looking at it right out of the box);

(6) is not as effective in providing putting feedback as balls with bolder alignment aids (e.g., Tour Response Stripe, Q-Star Tour Divide) — in fact, I used a red Sharpie to highlight portions of the alignment aid to increase the visual feedback aspect of the ball;

(7) is not for golfers who do not like or use alignment aids — the MAX ALIGN Technology can be mostly hidden on the tee or green by placing the ball with the alignment aid at the equator but the likelihood of finding the ball in the same orientation in fairway, rough, or bunker is extremely small.

The overall quality of the ball is high enough to keep me playing it.  I will continue to enhance the alignment aid to help it give me more obvious visual feedback on putts.  My only concerns are whether or not the launch angle and spin are right for me — only more time with a launch monitor and on course play can help determine this.

[ Now, for the details of the review. ]

Aesthetics:  8.5/10

If there was an Alignment Aid Subtlety Scale (AASS) with 1 being most subtle (e.g., standard side stamp a on Pro V1) and 5 being least subtle (e.g., Q-Star Tour Divide), I would rate the Maxfli Tour a 3.5/5.  The MAX ALIGN graphic has a fairly bold appearance when first taken out of the sleeve, but it is more nuanced at address; in fact, most of it can be hidden by careful placement in the horizontal position on the tee (see photo above).

The remainder of the ball looks and feels the way I would expect for a ball in the non-tour urethane category:  the cover was unblemished with crisp markings, and had a good “hand”; the ball feels soft but not marshmallowy off the club face; and it sounds great — 5/5.

The Numbers:  17/20

Elsewhere in this thread I have posted spreadsheet results for 5 clubs used indoors:  SW, PW, 8 iron, 18° Hy-wood, and Driver.  I just recently turned 73 and have a driver swing speed of about 88 mph.  My indoor tests were conducted over 5 individual sessions each devoted to a single club, and usually separated by 3-4 days.

Some ways in which the Maxfli Tour stood out:                     

(1) it was 1st or 2nd fastest in ball speed with all clubs;

(2) it was the lowest launching ball (except with 8 iron where it was 2nd lowest);  

(3) it had the 1st or 2nd lowest apex;

(4) it was 1st or 2nd lowest in back spin (except with driver where it was 2nd highest); and,

(5) carry distances were a mixed bag — 1st or 2nd longest with Hy-wood, PW and SW, middle of the pack with 8 iron, and shortest with driver.

On the Course:  16/20

Given the wet and cold conditions this Spring, the on course testing may not have shown the Maxfli Tour at its best.  

The low launch angle made the ball come in hot on approach shots and only soft/shaggy greens saved a few GIRs.  The lower launch/apex meant that the ball was unaffected by the wind — nice, boring shots that also did not deviate much on mishits.  The ball performed nicely on short pitches and chips — enough spin to hold greens in a way I would expect.  How the ball would perform in the middle of summer under drier conditions I cannot say.  My guess would be that tee shots with longer clubs would benefit from increased roll due to launch/landing angle but approach shots might have less chance of holding the green.  

Compared to the 2021 version of the Tour ball, I found the 2023 version to be significantly more durable — I used the same balls for both indoor and outdoor testing and the only noticeable damage to the ball came from cart paths or trees, not normal usage.  I would expect to get a minimum of 36-holes of normal use (assuming I could keep from losing the ball or playing for the cart path).  

The Good, the bad, the in-between — 16/20

The Good:  look, feel, durability, ball speed.

The Bad:  nothing stands out as intrinsically “Bad” with this ball.

The In-between:  launch angle and backspin are definitely in the “Mid” range, perhaps even on the low side for me; the MAX ALIGN Technology is very good for aiming the ball on the tee and when lining up putts but I found the visual feedback on putts disappointing — it just wasn’t as strong for me as I expected unless I added additional color Sharpie markings to the ball.  Perhaps this is just down to my vision, but the ball does not live up to the manufacturer’s claim that this “new MAX ALIGN alignment aid improves consistency and accuracy with a dynamic visual roll.”

Play it or Trade it? — 18/20

Gonna keep playing them until I run out!  The ball is quality, the alignment aid works great for lining up putts and off the tee, and a little bit of time with a Sharpie gives me a ball with plenty of visual feedback capability.  

I wonder how MAX ALIGN Technology would look on a yellow ball?  Pretty sure I’d like it a lot!

Congratulations to all of the testers!

A couple of years ago I went through the Ping Ballnamic fitting and the Maxfli Tour ball was my top recommendation.  The reviews on MyGolfSpy gave me the confidence to try it out.  Been playing it ever since. 

I especially like the center of gravity being marked on the Maxfli balls as it saves me the time it took using my Check Pro Go to find the center of gravity and mark my previous gamer ball the Bridgestone Tour BRX.  Started doing that after reading Dave Pelz’s book the Putting Bible.

I do revert back to the Bridgestone ball in the winter because it is a little softer and doesn’t spin quite as much which makes up for distance loss due to the cold and gives me a better feel.

It really performs well for me and I would most likely still play the Maxfli Tour ball even if it was priced the same as the Bridgestone ball.  As is it’s a great value!

I prefer the double line alignment marking on the previous generation Maxfli balls over the current single line alignment aid.Very curious to get everyone’s impression of the new Max Align markings on these test balls.

The Maxfli Tour X ball flies higher and spins more for me while the new Tour S ball flies lower and spins less.  Exactly as claimed by Maxfli.

The Tour ball is the Goldilocks ball for me.

Just swapped my 1990s clubs for new PXGs. 0311 Gen 5 2-wood, 4-gw 0211 irons, 0311 54 degree wedge and putter.

Test balls arrived this afternoon.  No sexy unboxing video -- just a plain, brown FedEx box with 2 dozen Maxfli Tour balls inside.

First impressions:  (1) balls look, sound and feel exactly as I would expect of a 3-piece urethane ball; (2) given the amount of ink needed for the alignment aid there are only a couple of minor blemishes (stray dots of ink); and (3) I was slightly surprised by the orientation of the alignment aid as I had expected it to be more of a side stamp rather than inline with the Maxfli logo (I doubt this will have any impact on the effectiveness of the alignment aid but it was tad surprising).

First nine holes of the season for me today.  Next 2-3 days look playable so I'll take these out for spin.  Greens still damp and shaggy so roll may not reflect accurately on the alignment aid but will get a first impression.

Seems like there’s a lot going on yet simple but not distracting. I like the look of these way more than the tour response stripe, they’re way too distracting for me. Looking forward to reading how they do for you!

Homemade and store bought -- let the testing begin!

Just back from 9 holes on my home course — lift, clean and place two-over 38!  I used the Maxfli Tour Align for all 18 putts (given how shaggy and bumpy the greens were I was very pleased to two putt my way around).

It may just be the angle of the sun here in central Michigan but I was surprised at how faint the alignment aid was when in motion.  Perhaps because the side lines connecting the top/bottom of the “arrowhead” or “feather” marking are very thin?

Also used it off the tee on the par 3s.  Not as strong a visual as the TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe or Srixon Q-Star Tour Divide but still useful reminder for me.  Ball feels soft but solid on tee shots, and has a nice mid-flight.

More play tomorrow and Monday ahead of rain and droppIng temps for remainder of the week.

SST PURE identifies asymmetries that exist in every golf shaft and locates each shaft's most stable orientation. This results in more consistent performance and uniform feel from club to club.

Tip Prepping - $2.95

Shafts are tip trimmed (if required) to manufacturer’s recommendations. For steel shafts, we abrade the tips. For graphite shafts, we remove the polyurethane coating. When you receive your shaft, all you need to do is mix epoxy, install and align. After the epoxy is cured, cut to your final playing length from the butt end and install the grip.

Tip & Butt Trimming - $4.95

Shafts are tip trimmed (if required) to manufacturer’s recommendations. For steel shafts, we abrade the tips. For graphite shafts, we remove the polyurethane coating. After tip trimming and prepping, the shafts are butt trimmed to the desired final playing length*.

Inside Missy Elliott’s first headlining tour, with Busta Rhymes, Ciara and Timbaland

LOS ANGELES (AP) — At a 24,000-square-foot studio near downtown Los Angeles, Missy Elliott , Busta Rhymes and Ciara are preparing to film the video announcement for a tour no one saw coming.

This summer, the trio — along with legendary producer Timbaland — will hit the road for Elliott’s first headlining arena tour, appropriately titled “Out of This World — The Missy Elliott Experience.”

“Listen, I didn’t realize I never had my own tour,” says a smiling Elliott, holding her tiny Yorkie, named Fendi, dressed in Gucci. “The last real tour that I went on — like, consistent days — was with Beyoncé and Alicia (Keys).”

That was in 2004.

Call it long overdue, but the timing is ideal. Over the last few years, Elliott — the forward-seeking artist — has been recognized for her talents as a musician, producer, songwriter and beyond .

In 2019, she became the first female rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards. In 2021, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2022, her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia, named a boulevard after her. Last year, she became the first female hip-hop artist inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“Getting those accolades, I feel like I’ve finally made it,” Elliott says. “It feels amazing. I feel so blessed.”

“What we’re seeing now is kind of the rest of the world catching up,” says Mona Scott-Young, Elliott’s longtime manager and co-producer of the tour. “She’s always been ahead.”

In his green room, Busta Rhymes tells the AP that a tour had never come up in conversation across his decades of friendship and collaboration with Elliott. (He’s the intro and outro voice on her canonical debut album, 1997’s “Supa Dupa Fly.” They’ve long since been inseparable.)

“She doesn’t really tour and she doesn’t perform often. I just kind of understood my sister — the unspoken thing,” he says. “You knew that if she decided to do this, go to the place where she was actually ready to tour, the s--- was going to be crazy because one thing Missy never did was play with her production. And you saw that in everything she did, from her shows to her videos.”

He continued: “Missy will turn down $10 million to do a show. … She’s super in control of her destiny in that way, and without compromise, is what made her super incredibly great. You can’t do nothing but love her for that. She’s a true artist in the purest form of the word.”

And make no mistake, this isn’t a nostalgia tour.

“We are in the best spaces in our lives, individually and collectively, we’re at the most experienced spaces in our lives,” Rhymes says. “We’re no longer Daniel-san. We’re now all Mr. Miyagi senseis. You know what I’m saying? We’re all at our perfection levels of what we’ve been doing and building together as a collective family for 30 years.”

Elliott echoed the sentiment.

“The lineup feels something special,” says Elliott. “It’s family. It’s not put together.”

On set, the trio are styled by longtime collaborator June Ambrose — all-black looks, like if the Avengers were impeccably dressed and made up of R&B and hip-hop legends. They take photos as a group and individually.

After her solo photo shoot, Ciara starts to tear up.

“When I was a little girl, a little artist coming up, and you would ask me, ‘Who inspires you?’ I would infuse a combination of people: Michael Jackson and Prince and I would say Missy Elliott. She’s one of the best performers of all time,” she said.

“She means a lot to me as an artist but also as a person, as a sister. She’s always someone I can call for the truth, and she’s got to keep it real with me. She’s someone I can call and cry to if I need to.”

But ask her if there will be any on-stage collaborations — Elliott wrote and was featured on Ciara’s huge hit “1, 2 Step”; Ciara’s on Elliott’s “Lose Control” — she laughs. “Missy’s very particular. I don’t want to ruin any surprises,” she says. “I think from beginning to end, people will be on their feet. All of us have a lot of energetic records.”

“Somebody’s gonna die!” Rhymes jokes.

“And come back to life,” Ciara cuts in.

“Let’s keep it positive,” Rhymes laughs. “Someone is gonna die and come back to life.”

Later, Elliott offers a hint at what fans can expect from the show. “It’s an experience, it’s not just you seeing the artist on the stage,” she says. “I want people to travel to those moments, those (music) videos , I want you to relive it on stage. It is most definitely a lot of good, good stuff. Expensive stuff!”

The “Out of This World — The Missy Elliott Experience” kicks off in Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 4 at Rogers Arena and concludes in Rosemont, Illinois, at Allstate Arena on Aug. 22.

It will hit Seattle; Oakland, California; Los Angeles; Las Vegas; Denver; Austin, Texas; Houston; Fort Worth, Texas; Tampa, Florida; Sunrise, Florida; Atlanta; Baltimore; Hampton, Virginia; Philadelphia; Washington, D.C.; Newark, New Jersey; Boston; Brooklyn, New York; Detroit; Montreal and Toronto.

The tour is produced by Young’s Monami Entertainment and Live Nation. Presale begins tomorrow , and tickets will become available to the general public on Friday.
