How the real-life 'Love Boat' is keeping the love alive

Robin Raven

February 14, 2023 // By Robin Raven

By Robin Raven February 14, 2023

When you stream reruns of the classic 1970s series “The Love Boat,” have you noticed that each celebrity-filled sailing is set on a Princess Cruises ship? Telltale signs include talk of the “Princess” ship the guests are on and that distinct “seawitch” logo in the background. This logo has been going strong since 1968 when it was designed by Harry Carlisle, and once you’re aware of it, it’s hard to miss how often it pops up in many episodes.

How it all began

The cast of "The Love Boat" continued to get together to celebrate the show and Princess Cruises

From the start of the show, Princess Cruises was the setting for “The Love Boat.” Television producer Douglas S. Cramer had success with his television series “Love, American Style," so in the mid-1970s, he had the idea to do another love-focused vignette series, but he wanted to set his new show on a modern cruise ship. It would be based on the Jeraldine Saunders book called "The Love Boats" that she wrote with her observations as a hostess and cruise ship director in mind, according to The New York Times .

While Cramer was looking for a ship for the movie pilot that would ultimately become “The Love Boat” television series, he chose Princess Cruises and teamed up with producer Aaron Spelling – and the rest is pop culture history.

Advertisement Advertisement

The cruising industry was never the same

Inviting viewers to "come aboard," “The Love Boat” was introduced to audiences as a made-for-TV movie on September 17, 1976. The beloved theme song featured music by Charles Fox and lyrics by Paul Williams, the songwriter who penned hits for artists like The Carpenters and Barbra Streisand. Jack Jones recorded the theme song that played throughout the series until the final season, when Dionne Warwick’s rendition can be heard over the opening credits.

Princess Cruises ships go to exciting destinations like Alaska and Mexico

Ships Pacific Princess and Island Princess were among the ships featured on “The Love Boat,” and the fun stories showed guests enjoying relaxing days at sea, then exploring alluring destinations around the world. The show became must-see television and attracted huge celebrities as guest stars for each episode.

During its decade-long run on ABC, it introduced millions of people to the idea of fun-filled, romantic cruise vacations, and it singlehandedly helped to expand the cruise industry. CNN reported that a major surge in cruising popularity was because of show’s influence, revealing that an estimated 500,000 people went on a cruise in 1970, but by 1997, a whopping five million people were cruising each year.

An ongoing legacy of love

“Love is in the Princess DNA as the original Love Boat. The legendary Love Boat series brought cruising mainstream, showcasing the romance of the sea and the elegant experience of the iconic Princess brand. We are leaning into the brand’s DNA superpower across all our marketing and communications, legendary onboard service delivery, world-class food and Broadway inspired entertainment that our guests absolutely love,” Princess Cruises' President John Padgett told 10Best.

This legacy is seen and felt by cruisers in big and small ways. For one thing, several original cast members have continued to work with Princess Cruises. Gavin MacLeod, who portrayed Captain Merrill Stubing, was a spokesperson for Princess Cruises for more than 35 years until he passed away in 2021.

Actress Jill Whelan, who played Captain Stubing's daughter Vicki, continues to work with Princess Cruises as a spokesperson and Celebrations Ambassador. Several cast reunions happened over the years to celebrate Princess Cruises ships and sailings. All six original cast members of the show gathered in 1997 for the official naming ceremony and christening of Dawn Princess.

In 1998, “The Love Boat” popularity was revived with a short-lived remake that ran for two seasons on the UPN network. That reimagined version of the show was set aboard the Sun Princess, and Robert Urich starred as a new captain.

Then, in 2022, Princess Cruises introduced a new spin on looking for love at sea with the reality show aptly called “The Real Love Boat.” Hosted by real-life couple Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell, this CBS show followed real-life couples aboard a luxury Princess Cruises ship as they searched for love. O’Connell stated that he and Romijn were fans of the original show.

The celebration continues

In October 2022, cast members from both the original show and the new reality series came together for a special “The Love Boat” themed cruise. The seven-day Mexican Riviera cruise on the Discovery Princess included a tribute to Gavin MacLeod. Cruisers got to meet the cast who shared their favorite memories from working on the show, and they participated in a vow renewal ceremony for guests on board.

The reality show cast met the classic series cast for a special Princess Cruises sailing

“The Love Boat” continues to find new fans. When you’re on a Princess Cruises ship, you can stream select episodes from your stateroom that still have introductions by Gavin MacLeod. When you get back home, it can be viewed on streaming services like Paramount Plus.

The cast and cruise line also have a joint star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, dedicated in 2018.

I’m guessing they always stopped by Hollywood to pick up all those movie and tv stars…. 😉 .

First hand experience with Captain Stubing and the gang, impressive!

LOL!!  Almost it seemed like.  Felt like the ship was so large then.  Loved that cruise and it got me hooked.

They also went to China and Greece. I seem to remember a Hawaii trip but cannot find confirmation anywhere.

When they filmed episode onboard it was on actual planned sailings. Princess cruises back in the 1970's & 80's operated the Pacific Princess on one-way 7-night sailings from Los Angeles to Acapulco with stops in Cabo, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo. You would fly back to Los Angeles. You could also fly to Acapulco and cruise back to Los Angeles with the same stops or book it as a roundtrip sailing from Los Angeles for 14 days.  I remember this as I had a Princess brochure back from those days. Mexico cruises operated in the winter/spring with summers in Alaska. In the 1990's I did this cruise on the newer Crown Princess; however, we stopped in Ixpata/Zihuatanejo instead of Manzanillo. Princess chartered a United Airlines 747 and flew us from Acapulco to Los Angeles as part of our cruise package. We got is sit in the upper stairs bubble of the 747. Great memories.

Years ago, my then husband and I cruised from Vancouver to L A on the Island Princess, sister ship to the Pacific Princess.  What I remember most about that cruise is that, as the ship left the dock in Vancouver, the Love Boat theme song played…over and over…and over… 😁

In 2018, we did a wonderful British Island and France cruise on the Royal Princess. While preparing for our departure in Le Havre, we had a “honk off” with an Aida cruise ship. I forget how their horn went but the Royal belted out the Love Boat theme for all to hear more than one time. Our 15 year old son declared the Royal Princess champion. While spending the occasional sea day on that itinerary we introduced the show “The Love Boat” to junior on our stateroom television. He didn’t have a clue who any of the walk on celebrities were but he did like a few of the starlets…

FYI - all the Royal class ships honk the Love Boat theme (although I don't know about the Majestic as it was first built for the Chinese market)

In ‘77/‘78 they had “Party Cruises…A Weekend At Sea”…2-3 days Pacific & Sun Princess roundtrip LA to Ensenada. The cheapest rate was $188 (2-days) and based on the info I’ve found ($1 in 1977 is equal to $5 in 2024) that would be $944 in 2024…no wonder I couldn’t afford to cruise back then. In 1992 sailed Pacific Princess (Love Boat) on a 5-day repositioning cruise from Ensenada to Honolulu.

Majestic has the love boat horn as well

Well my curiosity is up. 🙂 The reason I say this, I "watched" the Love Boat TV show, but we are getting ready to do the Regal Princess next month, and for some unknown reason, they seem to say THIS ship had something to do with the TV show or something like that. If any of you who have been posting here know, I sure would like to know, how the Regal is connected to the TV series?

avonlady6390

It is not connected to the old love boat series but a couple of years ago there was a reality series filmed on board the regal in the med it was named the real love boat didn't last long was cancelled after a few shows.  It was filmed during a regular cruise and a few crew were on it including the Captain the host was Jerry O'Connell and his wife.  I think people got the two names of shows mixed up.

But while not a long running hit show like “The Love Boat”  the reality show was still great advertising for Princess and the cruise industry in general.

I was on Regal in the fall of 2022 which was after they'd filmed The Real Love Boat show onboard during the summer. Capt. Paolo Arrigo was the captain and he also played that role in the reality show. If you've ever met him, he's a very handsome man, so it's not surprising.  He told a few stories about the show at our RC M&G, but couldn't say much because of his NDA with the producers and CBS.

He did say that they converted the Wedding Chapel into the "Captain's Dining Room" and brought all sorts of fancy furniture onto the ship just for filming purposes.  The guy who was the ED was in the running to play the "Cruise Director" on the show, but lost out to another dude.

I took these pictures on the Regal Princess in 2018.

We did the Princess 50th anniversary sailing on the Pacific Princess which had all the stars of the Loveboat onboard. We also visited most of the ports, except Acapulco. It was a really memorable cruise 😊

A high school friend work in the casino on Pacific Princess for about 5 years.  I can confirm the China port based on an anecdote he told me.  He arrived in Hong Kong and there was mail waiting for him there.  One envelope was a wedding invitation from a girl he thought he was still dating.  That’s when he knew it was time for a land based job.  He graduated high school in 1972, so college probably in 1976.  Add 5 years and it would have been around 1981 or 1982.
