Florida Georgia Line Plot Dig Your Roots Tour

By Jon Freeman

Jon Freeman

Florida Georgia Line ‘s Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard spent a generous portion of 2015 traveling the country on their Anything Goes tour, accumulating an assortment of ACM and CMA Awards hardware along the way. Their singles “Dirt,” “Sippin’ on Fire,” “Sun Daze” and “Anything Goes” all ascended to the top of Billboard ‘s Country Airplay chart and CMT named the duo one of its Artists of the Year. Rather than taking a much-deserved break in 2016, the pair will hit the road once again for the Dig Your Roots tour.

Joining Kelley and Hubbard for the trek will be guests Cole Swindell, The Cadillac Three and Kane Brown. Swindell recently released a new single, “You Should Be Here,” while Cadillac Three are releasing the single “Graffiti” to fans in the United Kingdom. Viral star Brown is prepping for his first major release. FGL’s latest single is “Confession” from the album Anything Goes, but this tour should feature music from their upcoming album.

“Tyler and I are going to make this year very personal with the Dig Your Roots Tour,” said Kelley in a statement. “We want our fans to feel right at home with us as they learn more about our story and we learn about theirs. From Kane Brown, to The Cadillac Three, to Cole Swindell, there is not a dull moment in this show. We are so thankful that we get to bring some of our closest friends on this journey.”

Dates for the tour have not yet been announced, but tickets go on sale for select cities starting January 29th.

Florida Georgia Line’s Dig Your Roots Tour Hits Nashville

dig your roots tour

Florida Georgia Line lit up the night and let it burn Thursday (Oct. 13) when they brought the Dig Your Roots Tour to Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. The sold-out show was their headlining debut at the venue.

At one point in the middle of “Hot in Herre” with their 2014 summer tourmate Nelly , a slightly sweaty Tyler Hubbard completely lost his Old Camp Whiskey shirt. But who could blame him?

The 90-minute hit-filled set was coming to an end and it was full of non-stop fun with friends, family and -- goodness, gracious -- great flames of pyro. Throughout the concert, the music blasting onstage had fans getting wild in the aisles and singing along to every song.

And at times the music was so loud, throughout the arena eyeballs rattled in their sockets. Onstage, Hubbard and Brian Kelley pretty much grinned from ear-to-ear the whole time.

Nelly was one of Florida Georgia Line’s three surprise guests at the Music City stop.

Kicking off with “This Is How We Roll,” Florida Georgia Line made their grand entrance standing on suspended lighting rigs that lowered them to the stage while the first shots of pyro warmed the faces of everyone rocking out in the sections closest to the duo. The special effects continued as they went into “It’z Just What We Do.”

Then they laid on the country boy charm thick as they performed their third No. 1 “Round Here” and “Anything Goes.”

Next, 13 inflatable trees emerged onstage as Kelley took the lead on the title track of their current album Dig Your Roots . “Confession,” “Stay” and “May We All,” their current single with Tim McGraw, followed.

After singing the Dig Your Roots song “Smooth,” they made their way to a satellite stage toward the back of the arena where another small bonfire lit up behind Hubbard’s grand piano for “Dirt” and “H.O.L.Y.,” the latter of which they dedicated to their wives.

Next the whole room lost it when they brought out Backstreet Boys to sing and dance their famous moves from the monster-themed music video “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).” They stayed onstage for the Dig Your Roots Tour premiere of “God, Your Mama, and Me.”

Then Jake Owen joined the duo for “Sun Dazed,” which was followed by a live “mixtape” medley of Chamillionaire, Toby Keith , Montell Jordan and House of Pain. “Ride Wit Me,” “Hot in Herre” and “Cruise” with Nelly closed the show.

Sets by Cole Swindell , Kane Brown and Nashville natives the Cadillac Three kicked off the night.

Before singing “White Lightning,” the Cadillac Three’s Jaren Johnston revealed he and his wife of three years Evyn are expecting their first child.

Backstage in an area that’s usually reserved for national tour rehearsals and award show pressrooms, their home record label Big Machine hosted Studio FGL for invited media guests and Music Row VIPs.

For this particular occasion, the place was lit up in red with a massive bar stationed in the middle with five disco balls spinning overhead. Two go-go dancers dressed in psychedelic jumpsuits and bell bottoms got down to a live DJ that mixed country with pop hits as folks mingled around Old Camp Whiskey stations serving at least four different signature cocktails.

While the Cadillac Three tore into 35 minutes of southern rock, Hubbard and Kelley were backstage at Studio FGL being presented with double platinum plaques honoring “H.O.L.Y.” from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Florida Georgia Line are honorees for the 2016 CMT Artists of the Year special, airing Oct. 20 at 9 p.m. ET. The Dig Your Roots Tour continues Friday (Oct. 14) in Evansville, Indiana.

Album Spotlight: Florida Georgia Line, ‘Dig Your Roots’

Crickets chirp and frogs croak before either member of Florida Georgia Line is heard on their new Dig Your Roots album. It’s a sign that the 15 songs are unlike anything you’ve heard from them before.

There’s depth, surprising depth. Dig Your Roots is a personal album that doesn’t dispose of the good times. They’re just quieter. Instead of all-night ragers that the whole neighborhood is invited to, Florida Georgia Line bring more memorable nights in. They’ve grown up, and it’s reflected on this personal project.

Some may find songs like “Lifer” and “Island” too personal. These are love songs recorded with Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley’s respective brides in mind. To criticize those means criticizing “Dig Your Roots” and “While He’s Still Around” — songs that name-check their respective fathers — and that’s a tougher sell. Both hit the heart hard in different ways. The title track is a jam that hooks fans in ways “H.O.L.Y.” and “Dirt” didn’t, but still delivers poignancy.

“While He’s Still Around” is a more subdued ballad that finds Kelley on the microphone, singing about his father and everything he’s learned. Fans of “May We All” will appreciate both of these songs.

It’s astounding how different Dig Your Roots is from FGL’s 2012 debut. Here's to the Good Times  was a one-dimensional project, and this album has more sides than Dungeons and Dragons dice. Ziggy Marley brings reggae flavor. The Backstreet Boys remind us what the early ‘00s sound like on the saccharine “God, Your Mama and Me.” “Heatwave” is just that, an exciting coda on an album that spends a lot of time in mid-tempo land. "Smooth" (the aforementioned opening track) is a swampy country rocker that needs to be a single right now. Like now !

The evolution of Florida Georgia Line is fascinating. Had they tried to repeat the formula that made them headliners, they wouldn't have made it to album three. Kelley and Hubbard deserve credit for staying one step ahead of their fans and expectations.

The Single:

Florida Georgia Line's first single from Dig Your Roots  is "H.O.L.Y." It's a big country love song that features the duo's more sensitive side, and their wives. Literally, they're in the music video:

"May We All," a collaboration with Tim McGraw , is the second single. It's a mid-tempo nostalgic country song that features all three singers and shows a new side of the country duo.

The Producer:

Joey Moi returns to produce his third Florida Georgia Line album. Moi is responsible for the powerful sound the duo is known for; however, he's scaled back for certain songs on Dig Your Roots .

Kelley and Hubbard have produced more mature songs on Dig Your Roots . "It's a man album," Kelley tells Taste of Country, adding that there are some married guy songs on the project. "Some married guys who still like to party songs," Hubbard says, clarifying. "H.O.L.Y." definitely qualifies as a married guy' song.

The title track was penned in 2015 and the group tell Country Countdown USA  it represents the album as a whole. "I should say that BK has some more lead vocals on this album," Hubbard says. "Like he's singing the whole song on three songs on the album."

In addition to McGraw, Ziggy Marley and the Backstreet Boys joined FGL for separate songs. It's a diverse album, with few songs recalling many from their debut album.

The Dig Your Roots  Tour began in May in Tupelo, Miss. and runs through October. Cole Swindell , the Cadillac Three and newcomer Kane Brown are set to open. Previously FGL's Hubbard shared that he looks forward to mentoring the "Used to Love You Sober" singer, as he knows what it's like to be viewed as an overnight success.

THINGS TO DO OUTDOORS

For dramatic views a-plenty.

Half-day: Cline Falls & Dry Canyon

Playtime for the whole family: Right in the center of town, Dry Canyon Park & Trail System runs north to south with trails, playing fields, and disc golf. In this 3.7-mile-long crown jewel of town, everyone is guaranteed to find something fun. This wild canyon was formed by glacial meltwater thousands of years ago. Smith Rock Ranch & Other Fall Experiences in Terrebonne and Beyond

If you grew up in Central Oregon, chances are that you picked your perfect jack-o-lantern pumpkin at Smith Rock Ranch—a huge pumpkin patch with spectacular views located in Terrebonne. But this Central Oregon pumpkin patch wasn’t always so grand. Farmer Matt Lisignoli grew up as a city kid in northeast Portland, and dreamt up the idea to start his first pumpkin patch on a rented farm in Redmond in 1998. While some people thought Lisignoli was crazy to farm pumpkins in the high desert, the operation, then called Central Oregon Pumpkin Patch, was a success.

Fall Favorites: Here’s Why Autumn is Awesome in Central Oregon

In Central Oregon, autumn’s arrival is both a welcome reprieve from the heat of the summer and the early sign that winter is right around the corner. It’s an odd time when many of us here desperately try to hold on to some semblance of summer while our loved ones are across the room doing a snow dance. We’re seasonally conflicted.

Pumpkin Patches + Petting Zoos = Fall Family Fun

As soon as the first hint of autumn rolls around, my three kids ask on a regular basis when we can go to the pumpkin patch. This is not simply because they’re eager to gather Halloween décor. To my kids (all under the age of 12), fall means visiting the farm and getting all the animal petting, ropes course playing and barbecue eating they can squeeze into one afternoon.

Dig Up Your Own Stunning Thunder Eggs At This Central Oregon Mine

oregon rockhounding thunder egg

If you're looking for a family friendly adventure when the weather warms up, hunting for Oregon's state rock is a great place to start. You can dig up your own beautiful thundereggs at a mine in central Oregon near Madras, which is a treasure hunt you don't want to miss.

What's A Thunderegg?

dig your roots tour

You might have heard about thundereggs and geodes and wonder if there's a difference between the two. There is. Geodes are mostly hollow, while thundereggs are solid or almost completely solid. The photo above is a thunderegg, and the photo below is a geode.

dig your roots tour

The thunderegg became known as Oregon's state rock in 1965. No one knows for certain how thundereggs are formed, but it's thought that a gas bubble leaves a hollow space in the earth which is then filled up over the years with minerals. When you cut a thunderegg open, you have a chance of finding a colorful core.

Where You Can Dig For Unique Polka Dot Thundereggs

When you dig for thundereggs, the location you dig is important as different locations have thundereggs with different qualities. One unique place to dig in Oregon is the Polka Dot Agate Mine near Madras owned by West Coast Mining. There's no fee for visiting, but you'll pay a small fee of around $5 per pound to take thundereggs and agates you find home with you.

The days the mine is open varies, and the best way to find out which days you can go and the cost to take rocks home is to contact them.

The mine has buckets they can loan you to collect rocks in, but you should bring your own bucket and you should also bring gloves, small rock hammers, and water and snacks.

The mine is located North East of Madras, nine and a half miles off of Highway 97 on NE Pony Butte Road.

In addition, Holiday Light Experience Deschutes is a perfect location for companies wishing to have a unique Holiday party with millions of lights. At every turn, the magical route is anticipated to overflow with spectacular light displays, along with Christmas melodies that bring popular holiday themes and characters to life.

Steve Driscoll, who has been building and designing the layouts for years, explains that a series of six tunnels of holiday lights will have themes such as stars, ornaments, snowflakes, presents, candy canes, icicles and ‘endless’ neon squares for optical illusions. Intermingled with the holiday light tunnels will be individual vignettes -- from an Aspen Forest to Santa’s Village -- and two 30-foot Christmas trees, walk through ornaments and, of course, Santa Claus.  Driscoll added, “This will be an immersive experience for all patrons.”

The Holiday Light Experience is produced by R Entertainment in conjunction with Tony Trade, and designed by Steve Driscoll.
