Solo travel is not a new concept — gap-year students and sabbatical-taking professionals spring to mind — but recent events have catapulted the individual journey, especially in the luxury sector, to new heights.

Following the onset of Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdowns, it made sense that an emerging trend of group travel came about once travel restrictions were lifted; multigenerational families and friend groups making up for lost time with a vacation together.

But, in the last 12 months, luxury solo travel has boomed — in 2022, Google Trends data indicated that solo travel searches had risen by an astronomical 761%.

The luxury travel industry is paying attention, with a whole host of exciting itineraries that are tailored specifically to the lone ranger. A number of cruise companies have also ditched the solo traveler fee, and even some yacht charters are available by the cabin with no additional fee if you travel alone.

Perhaps this trend was spurred by the realization that life really is too short to wait for the perfect time to go on that trip you’ve dreamt about. Or, maybe your travel companion is not keen on the location of your heart’s desire, and so you decide to go it alone instead.

In 1958, Geoffrey Kent, who was a teenager at the time, drove his motorbike from Nairobi to Cape Town . In 2017, Black Tomato launched its Get Lost adventure travel experience. With 80 percent of individuals traveling with For The Love of Travel jet -setting solo, each trip is packed with opportunities to meet fellow Millennial and Gen Z travel enthusiasts. For example, within your small “crew” of up to 14 people, make new friends doing snow sports and unwinding in saunas in Lapland or devouring tacos and sipping mezcal in Mexico City. Trips range from four to nine days, including weekends in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain wilderness or an extended weekend in Costa Rica where you’ll hike through rainforests, relax in hammocks, and hike, bike, or surf.

According to company feedback, the average FTLOT traveler is 30 years old and interested in meeting new people while traveling . The company bills itself as a mid-range travel company, where “​​we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin-worthy meal and a private catamaran ride.” 

In 2022, FTLOT plans to offer at least 10 new itineraries including to Belize, Turkey, and Spain’s Basque Country. And for those with the flexibility, the company launched Sojrn in 2021 featuring month-long, themed stays in destinations like Cape Town—focused on biodiversity—and a fashion-oriented stay in Paris.

Best for 50+ : Overseas Adventure Travel Rates

Overseas Adventure Travel is primarily aimed at American travelers aged 50 and over. It offers guided itineraries to worldwide destinations, including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, and the South Pacific, with trips ranked by activity level and accompanied by a list of physical requirements to help select an itinerary that is best suited for you. For example, their Japan and South Korea itinerary advise that participants be able to carry their own luggage as the selected hotels do not have porter service.

Some of Overseas Adventure Travel’s most popular trips include 17 days of wending the Adriatic from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (think a walking tour in Dubrovnik, sampling traditional Bosnian food in Sarajevo, and exploring the countryside near Zagreb). On another popular trip, you spend 15 days traveling through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ending in Helsinki, Finland. All trips offer pre-and post-itinerary extensions, and either waive the single supplement entirely or offer a discount on a private room.

The company offers a free Roommate Matching Program which helps you find a like-minded, same-sex roommate. If they can’t find a match, your single supplement is deducted. Small group sizes typically average 13 travelers.

Overseas Adventure Travel won the Solo Travel Award for Best Tour in 2017 and 2018, thanks in large part to its policy of offering a limited number of single spaces for each itinerary.

It began as an all-women, Canada-based canoe tripping company in 1991, and Wild Women Expeditions is perfect for boundary-pushing women who want to travel independently and enjoy the safety and support of an organized tour. The company also prioritizes hiring female tour leaders and on-the-ground guides. It offers outdoor adventures for women of all ages and identities and with a range of physical abilities (“whether your greatest skill is tracking a storm or talking up a storm, summiting mountains or summoning courage, keeping your kayak in line or coloring outside the lines,” as the company describes).

The company travels to 31 destinations around the world like Egypt, Tanzania, and the Azores islands. Itineraries are typically adventure-based and are filtered on their website by activity, with options ranging from sailing to cycling and horse riding. Imagine yourself sea kayaking and snorkeling in the Galapagos or scaling glaciers in Alaska. 

Most guests are solo travelers and there’s no single supplement to worry about as accommodation is typically in a shared room or cabin. Though if privacy is a priority, you can usually snag your own room for a nominal extra fee. Group sizes are kept small and social with between six and 14 women, depending on the itinerary you choose. The average group size is eight. 

Wild Women Expeditions also takes care to curate trips that avoid or minimize the disturbance of wildlife; supports environmental education and advocacy projects; and partners with social justice and women’s rights organizations.

Best for Solo Parent Travel : Intrepid Travel

Intrepid ’s family-themed holidays welcome adults traveling with children, including solo parents looking to travel with their kids without the stress of planning and coordinating a trip. Since each family’s travel needs and preferences are different, every itinerary includes an “essential trip information” section where Intrepid outlines whether the trip would be a good fit for you and your kids, as well as a physical rating from least to more strenuous activities. 

For example, an itinerary through part of the Amazon Jungle in Peru advises the jungle can be very hot and humid, and that the weather can be unpredictable in the Andes. On the other hand, an 11-day trip to Borneo island in Southeast Asia lists a minimum age of 5 and outlines a range of accommodations from hotels to guesthouses and jungle camps; on a few occasions, travel times between destinations range between four to five hours. Trips to Costa Rica, Tanzania, China, and Morocco are also listed.

Individuals under 17 years typically receive a 10 percent discount, and the company requires that adults have at least one child under 18 years traveling with them. As part of Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, itineraries support initiatives surrounding sustainability and conservation, climate education, and preservation of Indigenous culture.

If you’re splashing out on the adventure of a lifetime, you need to make the most of every moment – and flying solo means having the freedom to go at your own pace and explore the places that interest you the most, with no compromising your dream trip to suit someone else’s schedule. Some luxury trips cater particularly well to solo travellers or offer low or no single supplements, so there’s nothing to stop you from giving it a go. 

1. Photograph polar bears in Svalbard

Great travel photography relies on skill and subject matter, and there’s no shortage of either on an expert-led journey to one of the most remote regions on Earth: the frozen archipelago of Svalbard. If you’ve always dreamed of seeing polar bears padding along a frozen tundra, or walruses lolloping about on the fringes of an ice floe, you can take your time crafting the perfect shot on photography-focused ‘micro cruises’ with Secret Atlas. Solo Luxury Travel: Best Caribbean Islands for Solo Travellers

Maybe it's the current climate, or maybe it's the fact I'm the mother to young children, but nothing sounds better to me right now than some solo luxury travel. The idea of disappearing to the Caribbean for some luxury travel ALL ON MY OWN, phew, yes, please! Unfortunately that's not on the cards anytime soon for me, or for many of us, but that doesn't stop us indulging our wanderlust and maybe thinking about where we want to go most in the world. 

If this is the Caribbean, and if you are a solo traveller, this guest post by Christine from Exploring Caribbean , all about the best Caribbean islands for solo travellers and other tips for solo Caribbean travel, is one to read and bookmark. I've never actually been to the Caribbean, yet, but I really do hope to one day and maybe, just maybe, I will make that journey as a solo traveller!

As with any travel to the Caribbean, it's important to make a small note about the history of the region and specifically the role of colonialism and imperialism in shaping its path to the modern day. I say this so that you can be mindful about how you spend your money in the Caribbean - perhaps choosing to stay in locally-owned resorts, guest houses or hotels, rather than giant hotel chains owned elsewhere.

I would also encourage you to research the history of whichever Caribbean destination you choose, so that you can understand the impact of colonialism and slavery there, and maybe think about what you can do and how you can travel there with the most positive impact on the local people, culture, traditions, and economy.

The Best Caribbean Islands for Solo Travellers

The Caribbean is often associated with a honeymoon trip with a partner and cruises with family and friends. But time has changed and a  Caribbean getaway is now even more common among solo travelers.

Safety can sometimes be a concern, especially for women travelling alone and in recent years, events in some countries in the Caribbean have led some people to believe that it is not safe to travel solo in the Caribbean. However, this is more a sign of poor, biased media and reporting, and it's important to remember that crimes occur all over the world, all the time, even in the "so-called" safest countries in the world.

As someone who had been to over 50 countries solo, and for someone who used to live in the Caribbean, I can say that generally speaking, the region is very safe. But as a rule of thumb, even when embarking on some solo luxury travel always bring your common sense with you.

That said, it's true that in this list of the best Caribbean islands for solo travellers, I am taking safety into consideration, especially for female, non-binary and queer travellers. But there is so much more to what I think makes a Caribbean country a fantastic and worthy destination for some luxury solo travel. 

The Caribbean countries on this list are also good for meeting other people to socialize with, have beautiful natural beauty to explore and enjoy, they have plenty of fun activities for single or solo travelers, and there are ample options for singles or adults-only accommodation. They are also Caribbean islands that are easily accessible, have great infrastructure and reliability for solo travel, and because we are talking about the Caribbean - they also have the all essential amazing beaches too!

So if you prefer to travel solo and looking for a safe and fun Caribbean destination to travel to, here’s my list of the best countries in the Caribbean for solo travelers.

1.Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands has something of a reputation as a tax haven for the world’s elite, but it is also a very safe and interesting country for solo travelers. Yes, the Cayman Islands enjoy a relatively low crime rate but they also have much in the form of natural beauty, including endless white-sand beaches, amazing rock formations and caves, and plenty of opportunities for scuba diving and other water sports.

There are countless luxury resorts that are ideal for singles or solo travellers, but this is also an island that doesn't only cater to luxury solo travel - backpackers can find many options and affordable hotels too.

And if it's what you're looking for, the capital George Town has an active nightlife with nightclubs and nice bars serving award-winning cocktails, and serves as a launch pad for many of the region's best diving spots.

These are the places I think you should visit if you fancy a solo trip to Cayman Islands.

• Seven Mile Beach
• Starfish Point
• Cayman Crystal Caves
• Devil’s Grotto, Eden’s Rock, and Bloody Bay Marine Park for divers
• Hell in Grand Cayman

2.Turks and Caicos

Turks and Caicos is one of the most enchanting Caribbean destinations and is popular with families, couples and solo travellers alike. It has a variety of picture-perfect landscapes, those dreamy white-sand beaches you go to the Caribbean for, marine and wildlife you don't see just anywhere and lots of history to absorb too.

There are also plenty of singles- or adults-only resorts to choose from making it a great choice for both luxury solo travel or for those sticking to a budget. It's also not one of the busiest Caribbean countries in terms of visitor numbers so you should think about heading to Turks & Caicos if you want to avoid crowds.

Places to visit:

• Providenciales for Grace Bay and Smith's Reef
• Her Majesty's Prison - a historical and the only prison on the island
• South Caicos for diving and less crowded beaches
• Flamingo Pond

3. St. Lucia

St. Lucia is often regarded as the most beautiful island in the Caribbean. A lot of people think that St. Lucia is more of a honeymooners’ place and an expensive place to travel but you can also do it on a budget and more and more solo travellers are going to this memorable Caribbean island nation these days.

A popular stop for cruise ships, the island is also the ideal getaway for beach-combers, nature lovers, and adventurous solo travelers, as there are lots of mountain treks, jungle walks, and yes, again lots of water sports to enjoy. From a walk along with quaint villages to a trek up rugged mountains giving you spectacular views, St. Lucia really does have something for everyone.

You can also expect those classically-Caribbean stunning beaches, and if you want to immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of St Lucia, many quaint villages with markets and history to explore.

Places I recommend you visit in St Lucia:

• Anse Chastanet Marine National Park
• Marigot Bay
• The Piton Mountains
• Tet Paul Nature Trail
• The Soufrière village
• Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens, Waterfall & Mineral Bath
• Pigeon Island National Park

Known for its pristine beaches, stunning desert landscapes, and among the best wreck diving sites in the Caribbean, Aruba gives off an impression that it can only be enjoyed by those who are on their expensive honeymoon or a luxury family holiday of a lifetime. However, this country located north of Venezuela is also a haven for solo and budget travellers.

With its year-long fine weather, the picturesque-capital of Oranjestad, the easily accessible beaches in the north, and the rough and dramatic vistas of the east coast, you will never run out of things to do and places to explore on the island of Aruba, even if you only have your camera with you for a companion, and all you want to do is go and see the famous Flamingo Beach.

Aruba is possibly best for a relaxing but beautiful solo trip, thanks to its pristine beaches and stunning desert landscapes, but you can still get some thrills if you go diving there, which is also one of the best ways to meet other solo travellers in the Caribbean.

The places I recommend you visit on Aruba include:

• Fort Zoutman
• The Parliament Building
• National Archaeological Museum in the island’s capital, Oranjestad.
• Public beaches such as Renaissance Beach and Surfside Beach.
• Beyond the beach, Aruba’s natural wonders such as the Arashi dunes and conical Hooiberg peak.

Situated in the southern Caribbean Sea, like Aruba, Curaçao is a Dutch territory. It is also an excellent place to visit and explore for solo travellers in the Caribbean. Explore the colourful capital Willemstad, and then relax on one of the island's paradise beaches where you can swim in sparkling clear waters. Or dive in deeper - pun intended - and experience its rich marine life by diving or snorkelling. The weather is consistently warm and sunny in Curacao, perfect for lounging at the beach or walking around town.

Apart from its idyllic beaches, Curaçao is also known for the distinct European-vibe of some of its attractions, like the colorful buildings that will remind you of Amsterdam, and a selection of interesting museums in its charming capital. It's a popular choice with Dutch travellers - for obvious reasons - but you can expect to meet other solo or single travellers on Curaçao and also enjoy a full range of accommodation from luxury resorts to budget-friendly hotels and even hostels. 

Make sure you check out the following places on Curaçao:

• The island’s capital Willemstad features Dutch colonial architecture and the museums, shops, and cafes in the historic areas Punda and Pietermaai
• Museum Kura Hulanda’s art and sculpture garden.
• Christoffel National Park
• Mount Christoffel
• Shete Boka National Park
• Public beaches like Mambo and Grote Knip

Grenada is located in the far south of the Caribbean, so is often overlooked for those countries more north, but it is still very easy to travel through a direct flight from North America or other destinations around the world. However, if you're looking for a relaxing solo holiday in the Caribbean and don't like crowded beaches or resorts, Grenada is the best Caribbean island on this list for you.

The island is known for its stunning scenery that hardly ever gets crowded with tourists; the smell of fragrant spices like cloves, nutmeg, and vanilla, as well as the volcanic soil can be detected on island tours or your own explorations, and explain why it's called the Spice Island. Grenada really is the perfect destination for solo travellers who also consider themselves foodies, and you can't go without doing a chocolate tour.

Both unique and authentic, Grenada is the perfect getaway for those who are traveling solo and would like to go off-the-beaten-path in the Caribbean and I recommend you go seek out the following places:

• Beaches like the popular Grand Anse, and the more secluded La Sagesse Beach,
• The unique Hog Island
• The pretty harbor and colorful streets of George’s, Grenada’s capital.
• The French-built Fort George
• Market Square for local crafts, fruit, and spices.
• The 300-year-old Belmont Estate’s 400-acre grounds

Solo Backpacking: Budget-Friendly and Empowering

There are so many ways to travel solo. You can spend a lot or a little.

Often budget-friendly trips can be empowering as you will have more aspects to manage on your own. By contrast, more luxurious trips, while expensive, may have all the details handled for you by others, so all you have to do is show up.

I tend to like the former. I like backpacks and hostels and negotiating trains and buses and figuring out how things work in foreign destinations. This is the way for many solo travelers in their 20s and 30s.

As a backpacker, you can use money carefully so that you can travel farther, longer, and more often. As a solo backpacker, without anyone along for the ride suggesting ways to spend money that might not be important to you, you get all three.

Luxury Solo Travel in Your 20s and 30s: Sustainable and Authentic

Luxury travel is great but not at any cost. It's difficult to enjoy luxury if it damages the environment and culture of your destination.

Fortunately, that needn't be the case.

At the Hacienda Tres Rios resort on the Riviera Maya in Mexico, I watched a worker watering the plants along the beach that had been planted there to avoid erosion. He was watering them individually. Taking a Gap Year Solo

Traveling long-term offers a special reward to solo travelers in their 20s and 30s. Before settling down (if that is indeed the plan), a grand adventure of a gap year is planned to capture all the joy that travel has to offer.

Planning for a gap year is a little more involved than your standard trip. It takes saving and a better sense of geography than most people have. Because the trip is long, communications and managing access to money is more important, as well as pacing its use. And then, you also need to know yourself. Do you have goals for the trip? Do you want to schedule things or are you fine with sudden decisions to change plans?

Pacing the entire trip is important. It's important to be aware that you can't travel as quickly for a year as you do for a few weeks. You'll need to slow down. Sometimes, you even need a break from navigating and negotiating every detail yourself. This is when a tour, for a week or even more, may be very valuable. You'll also likely want to travel with someone for a period of time. The company, for a while, will be refreshing.

Solo On a Group Tour

I have been asked a number of times: how can you be solo if you're traveling in a group?

The fact is that there are many ways to travel solo. By my definition, you are traveling solo if you leave those people who define you, who have expectations of you on a daily basis, behind. You can do this traveling independently and you can do this if you pick up with a group or cruise.

Traveling solo in a group or escorted tour means you have the freedom to be who you want to be. There is no need to accommodate a partner or friend. It also means that you have the support of the tour company to manage all the details and, in many cases, you'll make new friends.

Tours come in many shapes, sizes, and prices. There are hub and spoke tours during which you stay in one spot and take day trips out to other places. Traditional tours move from one destination to another. Small groups usually involve fewer than 15 people. Coach tours can have more than 40 passengers. As for the cost, you can spend as much as you want.

The big deal for solo travelers is the single supplement. This is a premium that some companies charge for giving you your own room. In reality, it is cheaper for a company to sell to a couple but have to pay for only one room on the tour. However, with the rise of solo travel and our campaign to get more companies to drop the single supplement, more and more companies are adapting to the needs of solo travelers.

Perhaps you have a bucket list of places you've always wanted to travel at the ready but you just keep waiting for the right person to go with you. But if your friends are busy, you just broke up with your partner and you're not feeling a family vacation, you don't have to wait to embark on a new adventure – just go solo .

Traveling by yourself, even as a woman, is not as challenging or scary as you might think. There are plenty of benefits: You don't have to adhere to anyone else's schedule, budget or food preferences, so you can truly prioritize yourself. Solo travel means doing whatever you want whenever you want, while seeing the places that you most want to visit. Adventuring alone as a woman can empower you to see the world on your terms.

Whether you're concerned about safety or seeking companionship, there are plenty of places around the globe to consider for your next solo trip. U.S. News has compiled this list of top solo travel destinations (and helpful tips) with expertise from women who have traversed the globe by themselves and loved it.

Barcelona, Spain

With a visit to Barcelona , immerse yourself in the local culture at your leisure, whether you want to dine at Michelin-starred restaurants or go cheer at a football (soccer) game. Writer Mona Gable says, "Barcelona is a place of wonder − medieval neighborhoods, sunny beaches, and world-class museums, not to mention Antoni Gaudí's celebrated architecture." She enjoyed exploring the Mediterranean port city, especially because of its walkability and easy-to-navigate transportation system with metro lines and buses. She also noted feeling safe on her own: "As a female traveler, I felt perfectly at ease wandering many neighborhoods alone, even at late hours, when Catalans famously dine out."

Travel tip: Gable says it's best to avoid touristy Las Ramblas – Barcelona's main thoroughfare – except to see La Boqueria, the city's legendary food market.

Botswana is well known for African wildlife safaris , where travelers might encounter elephants, zebras, rhinos, lions and cheetahs while glamping in luxury tents and dining on gourmet food. "Wildlife travel offers an outstanding combination of camaraderie, safety and autonomy," says Darcie Smith, owner of Great Expeditions Travel . She recommends Botswana's green season (November to March) for solo female travelers; at this time of year the single supplement surcharge is waived at many safari camps, which offers an excellent value and means you're more likely to meet other solo travelers. It is also peak season for birding, and you'll find plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife in the lush landscape.

Many camps will send someone to meet guests upon arrival to help you navigate airports or transfers. In Smith's experience, camp guests are also escorted to their rooms at night, for an added wildlife safety element. "Solo female travelers can enjoy daily shared safari activities in intimate camps that encourage social gatherings with full independence to design the itinerary around what's best for you," she says.

Travel tip: Smith recommends making your social media accounts private when you travel so strangers can't track your location as well as learning about the customs of your destination. "This will help avoid accidentally coming across as forward or flirtatious based on local standards," she explains. "For example, while long eye contact may be considered a sign of self-confidence or being polite at home, it may come across as flirtatious in your new destination."

Picture yourself indulging in pizza and gelato, visiting world-famous museums, touring picturesque wineries, and shopping at designer boutiques – all of that is at your fingertips in Italy , writer Martha McCully's go-to travel destination. "Italians want to share their culture and it's part of their personality to welcome you," she says. "Plus, the food and wine are outrageously divine."

The idea that traveling solo means you will be alone is a misconception, according to McCully. "It's simply not true," she says. "Book a group tour at your destination, or DM a friend from your past on Instagram, which is what I did in Bologna." There are plenty of unique ways to meet fellow travelers in Italy; she recommends signing up for a cooking class in Bologna through Taste of Italy, a food tour by Curious Appetite or a painting class with Plein Air Tuscany. "The idea is you will be with like-minded travelers and someone else is doing all the organizing," McCully explains.

Travel tip: McCully suggests sticking to your wellness routine while on the road to keep healthy habits. "I like to take my rituals with me," she says. "When I ground myself with what I know makes me feel good physically and mentally, it's like I'm living in another country, not just visiting."

With glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls and hot springs galore, the dramatic landscapes of Iceland make it a must-visit destination. The "Land of Fire and Ice" is also known for puffins, its Viking history and women's empowerment, with the country's reputation as a champion of gender equality.

"Iceland is a favorite destination for female solo travelers because it is easily one of the safest countries in the world," says Jenny Ly, professional travel blogger at Go Wanderly . Iceland has one of the world's lowest crime rates and no animal predators dangerous to humans – just prepare for challenging weather and exercise caution if you plan to do any driving. Ly's itinerary recommendations include whale watching, with nearly a dozen types of whales navigating Icelandic waters; visiting Vatnajökull Glacier's ice caves; and chasing the northern lights in the darker months (October to April).

Travel tip: Ly encourages solo female travelers to not let the lack of a travel companion prevent them from exploring the world. "It can be both empowering and rewarding for women to travel solo, at least once in their life," she says. "While traveling alone can be riskier than traveling with others, it can also be more fun and gratifying." Her tip is to always be aware of your surroundings.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

While some women may shy away from traveling to Mexico due to safety concerns, travel blogger Jeanine Romo of lewildexplorer.com , who has ventured solo to many countries, recommends visiting the charming town of San Miguel de Allende . "I decided to go on my own and had such a wonderful time," she says. "The people are friendly, the hospitality is amazing, and there are so many things to do if you love art, incredible food, and incredible architecture." San Miguel de Allende is a great option for women travelers because the city center is easily walkable and Uber is available, which Romo says made her feel safe because she could always call a ride.

Travel tip: For women traveling by themselves, Romo advises doing research on transportation options (such as local buses, metro lines and ride-sharing app availability) before you arrive. "I like to know how walkable the city I'm visiting is," says Romo. "This helps me feel so much more confident when navigating a new city."

New Zealand

From pristine beaches on the North Island to snowy mountains on the South Island – and all kinds of geological wonders in between – the diversity of New Zealand is a major draw for tourists. Travelers can learn about the indigenous Māori culture, visit a sheep farm or go sailing in Auckland , among an abundance of other incredible things to do in this island nation.

Travel blogger Nina Ragusa of whereintheworldisnina.com enjoys visiting because of the welcoming culture, outdoor adventure and feeling of safety. "Traveling New Zealand as a solo woman is quite easy, and if it's your first trip solo, this would be a good country to start in," she says. Ragusa spent a month camping in a van by herself and said she never had to worry about her safety, even in more remote areas. "I went on hikes solo, some of them deep into the mountains for miles and miles, and was either alone or passing other tourists or friendly kiwis to wave hello to," she says. Ragusa adds that New Zealand is not the cheapest travel destination, but her personal recommendation for saving money on longer trips here is to rent – or buy and later sell – a van to live in.

Travel tip: Ragusa recommends steering clear of the outskirts of the bigger cities (particularly if you do travel by van). She warns that, as in most urban destinations around the world, those parts of New Zealand are where you're more likely to run into trouble.

El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina

For an outdoor adventure in South America, Argentine Patagonia offers pristine ice hiking, backpacking, kayaking, trekking and wildlife viewing. Nicol Gillum-Thomas, an African-American solo female traveler whose mission is to encourage women to live life as an adventure, enjoyed her time in the town of El Calafate. "El Calafate, Argentina, was the destination that seemed the most off-putting in my imagination, but became the trip with the most adventure, awe-inspiring beauty and ease," she says.

Travel tip: Gillum-Thomas recommends a stay at the América del Sur Hostel Calafate, saying she appreciated the clean accommodations and interesting guests.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

If you dream of a getaway that includes picturesque beaches and crystal-clear water, Croatia is the perfect spot to explore. In Dubrovnik , the ancient city walls and medieval architecture of Old Town , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, set a particularly gorgeous scene when the sun goes down. Tamara Williams, owner of solo female travel-focused blog My Elated Odyssey , says the unmatched beauty of the surrounding sea and mountains is only one reason to plan a trip here.

"The locals are some of the nicest people I have ever met," Williams says. "They truly made it feel like a second home. They spoke English well, so no need to worry about a language barrier." She adds that this Balkan country is also considerably more affordable than destinations in Western Europe.

Travel tip: For solo female travelers, Williams suggests staying in the Lapad neighborhood or near Old Town. "Both are full of cafes, bars and shopping to keep you busy," she says.

Svalbard, Norway

You can't go wrong in Norway , with breathtaking fjords, fascinating wildlife, scenic railways, outdoor adventure and the chance to glimpse the northern lights . Jurga Rubinovaite, founder of the travel blog Full Suitcase , says you won't want to miss Svalbard: a Norwegian archipelago located approximately 800 miles from the North Pole. "It is one of the most unique nature destinations in the world," she says. "Despite being so far north in the Arctic, it's extremely easy to visit and is also a great and safe destination for solo female travelers."

The main town, Longyearbyen, is the focal point of activities in Svalbard, which range from hiking and boat tours in the summer to winter pursuits such as ice cave visits and snowmobiling. "Because of the presence of polar bears, everything you do in Svalbard requires booking a guided tour, so you are always in safe hands," Rubinovaite explains. "Longyearbyen town itself is very lively and safe, with lots of accommodations, restaurants, shops, and a few museums, all within easy walking distance from each other."

Travel tip: For women traveling alone, Rubinovaite advises thorough research in advance of your trip to this Arctic locale; staying in hotels, rather than private accommodations; and booking guided tours or looking for a travel buddy when venturing out to very remote places.

Head to Ireland for a memorable solo getaway complete with rolling emerald-green hills, fairytale castles and Irish coffee. Experienced traveler Kelie Fiala of the Vacations Planned blog ranks this European country at the top of her list for solo travel spots. "Many attractions in Ireland are wonderful for solo travelers because they offer peaceful spots to stop and enjoy the gorgeous views, but also provide plenty of opportunities to meet friendly people at cafes and other points of interest," she says.

Fiala appreciates the nightlife and music scene of Ireland as much as the history and scenery. She suggests experiencing some of the country's pubs, even if you're a woman traveling alone, since you'll almost always find live music and friendly people. "Even if you start out by yourself, you'll easily find that you're having great conversations in no time," she says.

Travel tip: Fiala warns that for solo travelers, especially women, it's best to be careful how much you drink and leave the situation if you ever feel uncomfortable. But she also encourages women to not be afraid to have a chat. "You could hear some great stories, and make a new friend," she says.

Beautiful beaches, delicious food, friendly people, exotic animals and floating markets are just some of the incredible things that you can experience in Thailand . Loredana Gogoescu, head of content for Destguides.com , says she felt safe in Thailand as soon as she arrived. "Thai people are hospitable and kind," she says. "Moreover, as a solo traveler, I was surprisingly never alone. I had to book a private room for myself at one point just to get a breather, as I was constantly meeting new people!"

Travel tip: If you're apprehensive about exploring a new place on your own, especially if you've never traveled abroad before, Gogoescu recommends sorting out all the logistics like accommodations and transportation in advance so it's easier to acclimate once you get there. She adds, "If you're afraid of being alone, join different apps like Bumble and Facebook groups for the destination you're traveling to, to see if you can match up with other solo female travelers who will be in the area at the same time as you."

Netherlands

Nailah Hayward of TheresSoMuchToSee.com says the Netherlands is a superb option for first-time solo female travelers, based on ease of transportation, overall safety, the variety of things to do and other factors. "The Netherlands comes out high on all of these areas," she says. "And after multiple visits to the country, traveling through big cities and small towns, I always felt extremely safe." With the country's extensive train system, in addition to local trams and bike lanes, navigating the Netherlands by yourself doesn't pose too great a burden. Hayward also appreciates the ease of communicating with locals as an English speaker, since most people speak English in addition to Dutch.

"Whether you are into the arts scene, outdoor activities, luxury experiences, cultural exploration or culinary delights, the Netherlands has a huge variety of activities to dive into," Hayward says. "All of these elements make the Netherlands a place that I enthusiastically recommend for solo women travelers."

Travel tip: Don't carry cash. Hayward says most transactions can be done electronically, so there's no need for frequent trips to the ATM.

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

Luxury family travel influencer Irina Claire Bromberg suggests Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands as a top spot for solo female travel, partially because of its high safety rating from the U.S. Department of State. There's also no shortage of activities in this Caribbean destination, with Bromberg calling Stingray City a must. "The stingrays are peaceful and gentle," she says. "They glide along the ocean floor and you're free to observe and even play with them in their natural habitat." She also recommends soaking up some sun at the renowned Seven Mile Beach .

Grand Cayman is also a foodie paradise, according to Bromberg. "The vibrant dishes are as tasty as they are exciting, representing the fascinating mix of cultures and traditions that make the island so unique," she says. Her suggestions for food to try include the classic Cayman-style lobster, coconut shrimp and Johnny cakes.

Travel tip: Bromberg recommends checking the U.S. Department of State safety rating and other solo travelers' experiences prior to booking a trip.

Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.

Chart your course for Istanbul , the only city in the world that straddles two continents, Europe and Asia. This anomaly is one of many features making the Turkish city stand out as a unique destination; you'll get to experience its Byzantine architecture, Ottoman cuisine and landmarks like the Grand Bazaar on a trip here. Farihah Fuaad, a Muslim solo travel expert and founder of MuslimSoloTravel.com , says, "It offers the best of both worlds – East and West, Europe and Asia, modern and ancient – and lots of surprises." This lively, fast-paced metropolis is also rich in history and culture, with remnants of bygone eras visible in the skyline of Istanbul, according to Fuuad.

For solo travelers, there are endless opportunities for memorable experiences. "Wherever you go in Istanbul, multiple surprises await you at the corner of every street, its cobblestone alleys, or within the maze-like structure in Grand Bazaar," Fuaad says. The network of easy and convenient public transportation options also makes Istanbul a great choice for women traveling solo.

Travel tip: For first-time solo female travelers, Fuaad suggests taking time to adjust to being on your own: "Start small, by venturing to your next neighboring town or city first, or any city in your country first before you make the leap into solo traveling abroad." She adds, "Don't do things you're not comfortable with. Listen to your gut feelings – they're always right!"

Bali, Indonesia

For a tropical island escape, Bali is undeniably magical. Its natural beauty spans volcanoes, waterfalls and stunning beaches, as well as sprawling rice fields, diverse nightlife and breathtaking temples. Katie Caf, travel blogger at KatieCafTravel.com , who has been traveling solo full time for the past year and a half, says Bali is by far her favorite place to visit. "The Balinese people are very respectful towards female travelers, there's no street harassment based on gender like you might find in other locations, and while no place is perfect, Bali just feels very safe as a woman," Caf says. She adds that, although Indonesia is a conservative country, she found that women traveling there aren't expected to cover up except in temples or other sacred religious sites.

Travel tip: Caf recommends that travelers always use ride-sharing apps like Uber, Gojek and Grab rather than hailing cabs off the street, since the apps' tracking features make them much safer to use for solo female travelers in foreign countries. Some of these sites also allow you to share your route with chosen contacts for added safety.

Paris is one of the most iconic destinations in Europe for any traveler. Antoinette Harris, founder and owner of travel blog Frolic & Courage , considers the "City of Love" a superb option for women traveling solo due to its cuisine, cultural attractions and hands-on activities of all sorts. "I consider Paris the city of self-love because it has everything solo women travelers need to care for themselves and their interests," Harris says.

With the flexibility of traveling on your own, you can plan the Paris trip of your dreams. Depending on what you're interested in, you may choose to learn about French cooking, immerse yourself in the Louvre , attend an opera at the historic Palais Garnier or browse local shops, as Harris has done. "Uninhibited by the demands or requests of others, I was able to really take the time to focus on who I am, what I wanted and what sparks joy and life in my spirit," she says. "Traveling to Paris taught me how to truly enjoy spending time solo."

Travel tip: One of Harris' top tips is to not bring more than you can carry, as you won't always find someone to help you with your luggage if an escalator breaks and you have to take the stairs. "By keeping only the essentials, you're able to move quickly to and from your destination without worrying too much about being a target for crime," Harris says. She also recommends downloading an offline map you can reference even without internet connection and sharing your itinerary with family members or friends who could help in a sticky situation.

New York City

It's hard to beat the allure of the twinkling lights of Times Square , award-winning Broadway shows and Lady Liberty . Melanie Musson, a travel expert with AutoInsurance.org , loves taking a solo trip to New York City , saying she doesn't even have the chance to feel lonely because the hustle and bustle of the big city keeps her sufficiently distracted.

Musson says that, while there are risks for visitors in any city, the odds of anything scary happening to you in New York are low as long as you take appropriate precautions. "New York City prioritizes tourist safety because they know they’d lose this valuable industry if visitors had frequent bad experiences," she explains, adding that you may be surprised how friendly the local residents are. "They're usually happy to help you identify the right subway line to take or bus to catch. They'll probably even give you tips on the best places to eat or things to see."

Travel tip: Musson's pre-trip tip is to check crime reports in the destination you're heading to and stay within the safe areas. "Trust your gut and get out of the area if you don't feel safe," she cautions.

The city of Singapore is known for being clean, green and safe for travelers – as well as expensive. Singapore boasts impressive architecture, the iconic Singapore sling cocktail, street food markets and luxury shopping malls. Daina Cohen, editor at WorldlyKnown.com , says, "Singapore is a fantastic destination for solo women travelers because of its vibrant, yet safe culture and exciting sights." On a solo trip to this Southeast Asian city, you can experience the unique blend of diverse cultures and cuisines, Cohen says, in addition to other benefits. "It's easy to navigate with plenty of public transportation options, plus an excellent healthcare system, which makes it a great choice for those who want to travel solo," Cohen notes. Tourists should research Singapore's laws – such as a ban on chewing gum – before traveling there to avoid fines.

Travel tip: Cohen advises staying in a hostel (which often have options for women-only dorms) or renting an Airbnb for more privacy. You'll also want to familiarize yourself with the city's public transportation system prior to arrival.

I've been on over 20 solo trips. Here are the 9 things I wish I knew before I took my first one.

• I've traveled to more than 40 countries and have visited over 20 of them by myself .
• Before my trips, I always research the destination along with its customs, languages, and laws. 
• Solo travel can feel lonely at moments, but the lifestyle can also be rewarding and addicting.

After visiting over 40 countries and experiencing more than half of them alone, I've learned a thing or two about solo travel. 

By preparing correctly and having the right mindset on the ground, I'm almost always guaranteed to have an adventure — whether I'm hiking Machu Picchu in Peru or attending a festival in Bhutan.

Here's what I wish I knew about traveling alone before my first solo trip.

Traveling alone for the first time can feel intimidating and overwhelming, but that shouldn't stop you.

I took my first solo trip while studying abroad in college. Fueled by my passion for hiking , I wanted to visit the Alps, but none of my classmates wanted to join me. I knew I needed to get to the mountain range no matter what it took, even if it meant going alone.

Despite the fact that my trip was only one week, going to a different country where I didn't speak the local language was intimidating — especially when people told me stories about why they were too scared to travel alone.

Ultimately, I asked myself, "Why not?" 

I knew how to navigate an airport, had enough money to get through the week , and had already booked my hostel.

As soon as I arrived, everything went smoothly. I met people at my hostel and in town and hiked among some of the most beautiful mountains and glaciers I've ever seen. It was amazing, and I got to visit a bucket-list destination.

To ensure smooth logistics on the ground, you have to do in-depth destination research ahead of departure.

If I'm traveling to a different country alone, I always do extensive research ahead of time.

Each destination has different things to watch out for, customs to acknowledge and respect, ways to dress, and methods of getting around. It's helpful to be informed about the environment and culture you're walking into ahead of time. 

Some countries have customs and laws that are very different than the ones in my home country. I like knowing about them ahead of time so I don't unintentionally break a rule or offend someone.

Planning out the details of my trip and properly preparing reduces the chance of mix-ups and problems on the ground.

Even though you're starting the trip solo, you probably won't be alone the entire time.

Usually, someone asks if I'm traveling solo when I'm boarding buses or checking into my accommodations.

I technically am, as I left my home country and hopped on a plane by myself. But I often meet so many people along the way that don't feel like I'm traveling alone.

If I stay in hostels , homestays, or social Airbnbs, I tend to have a very easy time meeting other travelers. I've gone backpacking through a new country with friends I met on my trip, and before I knew it, we all started to feel like a little family.

The same goes for meeting locals, as many have shown me around a destination and even invited me to stay with their families to learn about their culture.

Exploring by yourself can be lonely, and the friendships you make along the way may not always last.

I've clicked with so many people I've met on my travels, and during the trip, it feels like we'll be friends forever. Sometimes, we even make plans to meet up in a few months. 

But it takes time to develop strong, lasting bonds. A lot of the relationships I make on trips seem to expire after I get on my return flight.

We separate, and our lives go different ways. They usually end up being a memory (or another person I follow on social media ). The friendships are incredible, but frequently moving on after meeting people you connect with gets lonely after a while.

It's also hard missing out on big activities and events with friends and family at home. Even when I'm exploring an amazing place, I still worry about missing out.

The freedom to do whatever you want whenever you want is a luxury.

One of the biggest advantages of solo travel is the freedom to do whatever I want, whenever I want. 

I've fallen in love with a town and ended up staying twice as long as I initially planned. I've gone on long, grueling solo hikes. I've also skipped dinner out to have a lazy night in. And I never have to feel bad about how these actions impact a travel companion.

Exploring with other people is fun and offers many amazing opportunities, but I love traveling on my own schedule and not having to accommodate anyone else .

You need to learn to adapt and understand that there will be moments of discomfort on solo trips.

Flexibility and adaptability are essential while traveling, especially if you're doing it alone. You never know what opportunities may come up — maybe you'll end up changing your weekend plans to attend a fun event that a local told you about.

Also, not everything is comfortable when you're traveling on a budget. You may end up sleeping in some below-average accommodations and taking long, bumpy bus rides .

Even if you're not on a budget, you may eat foods you're not used to in order to fully experience a different culture.

Exploring a place where you don't speak the local language and immersing yourself in a different way of life can be hard, especially without a familiar person by your side.

Being in a new place is thrilling, but you should fight the urge to fill your schedule.

I've made the mistake of jam-packing my schedule from sunrise to midnight a handful of times. It's exhausting, especially if I'm traveling between destinations that are far apart and require a lot of time in transit.

It's not fun to fill your vacation with car rides , bus rides, and frequent flights. So when I'm limited on time, I choose a few things to do that are close to each other and fully explore those places. 

Then, I can really experience a place, meet the locals, and relax — the last of which is a priority when I'm staying in beautiful destinations.

Trust your gut and always be aware of your surroundings.

Unfortunate incidents can happen anywhere, so I do my best to stay vigilant of my surroundings. I keep an eye on my bag and only bring as much money as I need for the day, especially if I'm in a busy area.

Someone once stole my phone and some cash out of my little crossbody bag when I wasn't paying attention. It was inconvenient and frustrating, but it happens to even the most seasoned travelers.

I also always trust my gut when I'm traveling, and usually, things feel slightly off right before something bad happens. If I get that sense, I leave and go somewhere else. It's best to get out of the situation as soon as possible.

Traveling solo can be addicting, and you may even come to prefer it to taking trips with others.

After nervously preparing for my first solo adventure to the Alps back in 2014, I never thought I'd travel alone as much as I do now.

In fact, I've spent more time traveling solo than I have traveling with other people. It's hard to find friends who are compatible travel partners and also have the same time off. 

But that hasn't held me back. The lifestyle is addicting. The freedom, the people I meet, and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunities leave me craving more.

Overwater bungalows started as a bottom-tier accommodation. Today, they're a status symbol in the luxury travel world.

• Overwater bungalows originated nearly 60 years ago in Tahiti.
• The first rooms cost $240 a night. Today, experts say they're a staple in the luxury travel market.
• The accommodations have since expanded in region, size, and amenities.

The first overwater bungalow had a thatched roof, a window peering into the ocean, and a ladder leading into the water.

Fast-forward 60 years, and overwater villas can now feature multi-story water slides, infinity pools, and personal butlers. They can also cost upwards of $8,000 a night at some of the world's ritziest resorts.

There's no doubt the accommodation style has expanded since its start in Tahiti in 1967, and travel experts agree they aren't going away anytime soon. Instead, the overwater villa has become a status symbol of luxury travel.

The start of the overwater bungalows

In 1959, three Americans left California for Tahiti's lush landscapes and crystal waters.

The men — Jay Carlisle, Hugh Kelley, and Donald McCallum — relocated with plans to start vanilla farming. When they learned the land they purchased wasn't suitable for vanilla, they turned to hospitality, Vaihiria Kelley, the daughter of Hugh Kelley, told Business Insider.

They purchased a four-room, run-down property on the island of Moorea and named it Bali Hai. The trio became known as the Bali Hai Boys.

Their timing was ideal, Kelley said. Shortly after renovating the hotel, a new airport connected international travelers to Tahiti, which had previously only been accessible by boat. In 1962, Life Magazine wrote a seven-page feature on Tahiti and the Bali Hai Boys. Tourism boomed.

After that, the men purchased two more hotels on two other islands.

As the hotels grew in popularity, they needed to grow in size. Two of the properties had the land to expand, but the third hotel on the island of Raiatea didn't, Kelley said. Instead, it was surrounded by roads, neighboring resorts, and the ocean.

"The overwater bungalow didn't start out of, 'Oh, let's think of something really innovative,'" Kelley said. "It really came out of a need."

Without land to expand, the ocean was their only option. Nearby, on the island of Huahine, traditional Tahitian fishing huts lined the coast.

That's where the trio found their inspiration, Kelley said. The basic fishing huts sat on coconut trunk pillars and had thatched roofs. Mimicking the style, they built three overwater bungalows to join the garden and pool bungalows that also filled the Raiatea property in 1967.

Kelley said the men assumed the overwater bungalows were the least desirable at the time and priced them at just $240 a day , including meals.

"They didn't expect that it would be so popular," Kelley said.

Vacationers were enchanted by falling asleep to the sound of the ocean and waking up to dive straight into the water. After realizing they had a successful concept, Kelley said the Bali Hai Boys began adding overwater bungalows to their two other properties. It wasn't long before other resorts on islands across French Polynesia started copying the design.

Kelley, who grew up in Moorea, remembers watching her dad welcome guests to the hotel. Celebrities and actors traveled across the world to sleep in the overwater bungalows.

"When you see the pictures now, you think, 'Oh my God, it's very '70s," Kelley said. "But for that time, it was very luxurious."

Nearly 60 years later, it remains a luxurious vacation, Ronan McLoughlin, the owner of Dream Overwater Bungalows , a website that compiles resorts around the world, told BI.

Today, there are about 250 resorts that offer accommodations over the water, with many being four or five-star resorts.

The original resort on Raiatea has since closed, but Kelley said she sees a bit of her dad's vision each time she sees an overwater bungalow.

While the concept has existed for decades, experts say it remains a luxury staple

Jason Toms has spent the last four years helping travelers build tailor-made vacations in the Maldives at the luxury travel company Audley Travel .

And if someone is traveling to the Maldives, chances are they're looking to sleep in an overwater villa.

"It's the signature way to stay in the Maldives," Toms told BI. "My clients, who are typically traveling from the US, 95% are asking for overwater villas."

Lucy Rudgard, the senior oceans and islands expert at the luxury tour operator Scott Dunn , agreed, adding that the appeal of overwater stays goes beyond just the Maldives.

"It's always No. 1 on people's list," she said, noting that travelers are also willing to pay a lot for the experience of sleeping above water. In destinations like the Maldives and Bora Bora, overwater villas can cost twice as much as a beachside resort.

For Rudgard's clients, the entry cost for a week in an overwater villa might be around $30,000, but she estimates some clients have spent more than $250,000 for overwater vacations.

McLoughlin said these high costs are also partly why the accommodations have remained a luxury staple.

"There's a status to it as well because they're automatically expensive in most places," McLoughlin said since it can be expensive to build the bungalows.

On top of that, it's no easy feat for many US travelers to get to some of these faraway destinations, which adds another layer of luxury to the accommodation.

"If you were to be seen in an overwater bungalow, it meant that either you're in the Maldives or in Bora Bora or somewhere fancy," McLoughlin said.

Overwater resorts continue to pop up around the world

For decades, overwater bungalows were largely limited to the Maldives and French Polynesia. But within the last eight years, the concept has expanded to the Caribbean , a destination much closer to most Americans.

But building an overwater bungalow in the Caribbean can be a hard task to accomplish, Danny Kalenov, the developer behind Six Senses Belize , an overwater bungalow resort that's set to open in 2026, told BI.

Places like the Maldives and Bora Bora are ideal for overwater bungalows because they are dotted with lagoons, atolls, and calm waters. Plus, hurricanes are few and far between.

As the vacation style became one that everyone dreamed of, builders were determined to offer the experience of sleeping above water in the Caribbean.

In 2016, the Sandals Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica, became the first overwater bungalow resort in the area .

"Now, they've started to pop up everywhere in the last seven or six years," McLoughlin said.

Today, Dream Overwater has cataloged nine Caribbean locations home to more than a dozen overwater bungalow resorts.

According to Kalenov, the demand for the experience is still high, with Americans wanting to travel closer to home. That's why the luxury hotel brand Six Senses is building a private island resort with 40 overwater villas off Belize's Ambergris Caye.

The company is using a custom-built barge made specifically for shallow water and specialized equipment. Kalenov compared the process to "filling a swimming pool with a teaspoon."

And while the construction might be more challenging than a traditional resort, he said the end product — and experience he's creating — will be worth it.

It's not just Six Senses that's betting on overwater villas. Royalton Chic Antigua is set to open this spring with 12 overwater suites, and Sandals in St. Vincent and the Grenadines opened at the end of March with 10 two-story villas starting at $1,570-a-person per night.

"We believe that this type of experience is the future of luxury travel and the future of hospitality in general," Kalenov said.

Kari Lake downplays 1864 abortion law, says Arizonans can travel '3 hours' for procedure

Senate candidate Kari Lake indistinctly linked illegal immigration to the climbing cost of housing in Arizona at a Tuesday morning campaign event that veered into higher-profile policy issues, including Lake’s shifting rhetoric on abortion.

Lake, the Republican Senate primary front-runner, seemed to downplay Arizona's recently upheld strict 1864 abortion ban by telling people "you can go three hours that way, three hours that way, and you're going to be able to have an abortion."

Lake was scheduled to discuss housing affordability alongside Jason Mitchell, a real estate broker.

In recent years, the already-rising cost of housing in Arizona has sharply increased. In 2022, the state had the 18th highest "housing wage" needed to rent a two-bedroom apartment. In 2023, it jumped to number 12, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition’s latest “Out of Reach” report .

Lake gestured broadly to the issue of illegal immigration, the linchpin of her campaign, to explain that trend.

“We don't have enough housing for the people who are here. Now we've got 9 to 12 million. That adds additional stress to the system,” Lake said to dozens of people at Mitchell’s office in Scottsdale, referring to the estimated number of undocumented immigrants in the U.S.

Immigration is among the factors that can influence the price of housing in U.S. cities. Economists disagree about why housing is so expensive, but many view shortages in the housing supply or corporate ownership of the housing stock as the greatest contributing factors.

In an interview before the event, Mitchell said he doesn’t believe that illegal immigration is driving up the cost of buying a home. He said it’s plausible that immigrants are driving up the cost of renting because they, like other occupants, eat into the rental supply.

“The less supply of something there is, the more expensive it costs. That’s just basic economics,” Mitchell said.

Onstage, Lake and Mitchell bemoaned crime committed by undocumented migrants in Scottsdale, one of the Phoenix area’s wealthier cities . Police have told local media that burglaries in Scottsdale have fallen overall in recent years, though this year saw a highly publicized pattern of thefts that police say were committed by South American immigrants.

“The only way, frankly, to save our homeland is to send these people back to their homeland,” Lake said.

Mitchell, Lake’s interlocutor, leads a firm that promotes itself online as a luxury real estate company selling homes to clients like the retired former Phoenix Suns player Eddie Johnson. In an interview, Mitchell said the firm’s average purchase price is around $470,000, not much higher than the statewide median .

Mitchell has argued that simply building more housing won’t solve the problem. Instead he has advocated using taxes to dissuade wealthy investors from buying up large numbers of homes, which politicians on both the left and right have said takes units out of the housing supply and drives up prices for ordinary people.

Lake suggested her support for that view on Tuesday.

“I want to find ways to make sure that people, first-time homeowners, and families can get into homes, and not be outbid or even underbid by hedge funds and such,” she said.

Later, Mitchell asked Lake to explain her “shift on abortion.” While running for governor during the last election cycle, Lake called the near-total ban on abortion, enacted while Arizona was still a territory, a "great law" . After the Arizona Supreme Court upheld that law in a decision last week, Lake said the 1864 law she once praised was "out of step with Arizonans."

Lake responded that she has “never shifted” in her opposition to a federal abortion ban and downplayed the impact of the 1864 law. She said people wanting an abortion could seek one in another state and referenced Democratic Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes’ announcement that she will not prosecute any abortion bans.

“Everyone’s fighting about a law that’s not even going to be enforced here in Arizona,” Lake said. 

“Even if we have a restrictive law here,” Lake continued, “you can go three hours that way, three hours that way, and you're going to be able to have an abortion.”

Mayes’ decision could be challenged by one of the state's county attorneys.

A memo circulated Monday by a GOP legislative staffer revealed that Arizona Republicans are considering putting forward competing proposals to weaken support for a widely anticipated ballot measure that would enshrine abortion rights into Arizona’s Constitution.

“I think our lawmakers need to do something quickly, and that's putting another initiative on the ballot to give people options,” Lake said on Tuesday.

Political observers believe the issue of abortion could be a major liability for Lake and other Arizona Republicans’ campaigns this election year. On top of sweeping consequences for prenatal health care in Arizona, the abortion restrictions are likely to boost Democratic turnout in statewide elections like Lake’s that are widely expected to be razor-thin.

Lake’s likely Democratic opponent in the November general election is Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz. She faces a GOP primary challenger in Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb.

In recent remarks, Gallego has taken direct aim at Lake over her past support for the 1864 law.

"She wanted this to happen," Gallego said of Lake. "They all did. Do not let them lie to you."

What are the benefits of travelling alone.

You’ll travel on your own terms – and at your own place. There’s time for silent reflection and time to test your mettle. Take a slow boat through the waters of Halong Bay, propped up with a book. Ride a horse along the black beaches of southern Iceland. Take in the frescoes and ruins of Akrotiri, blinking in the sun, putting your bag down to sip a beer in a taverna, alone. You can write your notes. You can call the shots. You can truly immerse yourself in another world while calling all the shots. Often, it’s great to travel with a companion (or a few). But sometimes it’s important to take stock and to learn more about yourself. That’s what solo travel can do.

How should I pick where to travel solo?

The whole world is your oyster. It doesn’t have to be exotic and far flung. You could explore the eateries of Spanish Basque Country. Study the ruins of ancient Rome. And drink and eat your way through the bars of Buenos Aires. But you could also set off to learn about the plant life of the Peruvian uplands. Explore nature in the Galapagos Islands. Or wander amongst the monasteries of the Georgian mountains. Luxury solo travel is a great way to learn new skills and to practice those that have gathered dust. Wine-tasting. Cooking. Yoga. Writing. Everything’s up for grabs.

How much is one of your typical solo trips?

Our solo trips are completely tailor-made, and private (we do not offer group tours). As a result, the cost of a solo trip can vary hugely depending on location, duration and the type of experiences involved. From exploring a city to a far-flung adventure, the possibilities are vast. Due to the nature of our bespoke, luxury experiences, we would expect a minimum cost to be in the region of $8,000 (£7,000) for a week-long trip.

How can solo travellers stay safe?

When you come with us on a luxury solo trip, you’ll have access to our partners on the ground, local guides, and our 24/7 hour support line. There will always be somebody on hand to help and assist, including providing pre-travel safety briefs. Many solo travellers ultimately chose to travel with a guide (or several), so you don’t always have to be entirely on you own.

What factors are important when choosing a solo travel destination?

Some destinations seem better designed for twos or groups. The romance of the Maldives might offer less to a solo adventurer. Think about your objectives and needs. Do you want to go slow, or to take part in lots of high-octane activities (like surfing, sailing, and biking)? Do you want to get really, really far from it all? If so, then consider places that are naturally suited to longer journeys. You could take in the cities of western Europe. Or you could make your way through the jungles of Costa Rica.

What tips do you have for travelling solo?

Plenty. Think about the ways you might want to document your trip. A notebook, a pen, a camera. There’ll be plenty of time to record your thoughts, experiences, and environment. Talk to the locals. Spend time hanging around. Embrace the freedom of getting a bit lost. Ask for directions, ask for help. You can be entirely spontaneous, as well. This is often much harder when you’re part of a bigger group. Happily, we’re experts at planning trips with lots of cushion room and space to make spontaneous decisions and choices. And we’re only ever a call away if you want to change your wider plans mid-trip.

Do you offer group tours?

No. Our solo trips are exactly that – solo. After a detailed consultation with one of our Travel Experts, we will customise you a trip that is unique to you. We do not offer group tours.

Earlier this year, Chloe contacted our travel experts; requesting a three-week solo trip across Mongolia. Only 48 hours later, she was on the ground.

You really should ask the questions on the Moscow forum, since the answers require local knowledge and are not very specific to solo travelers. Most probably many of them are already answered as Top Questions or in existing threads. You just need to make the effort to read the existing answers.

The airport website http://www.domodedovo.ru/en/ tells that there is a rail connection. You probably prefer to use that instead of dealing with taxi drivers as a solo female. Downtown you can use the Moscow underground network.

Certainly check out the destination forum. You may find all you need in the Top Questions or previous posts if you do a search of the forum.

I may be biased because I visit Moscow regularly as a solo female traveller, in business as well as for pleasure, and have no language or mentality barrier to consider, but I find Moscow no different in terms of safety from any other large city - London, NYC or Hong Kong.

In other words, you certainly do need to keep your wits about you, mind your environment and stick to the usual common sense rules. But there’s really nothing special to be worried about.

Get ready to a large bustling populous (crowded) city with richest history and developing nowadays, with lots to see and do to keep you busy for more than three nights. Better plan ahead what you want to see and decide on how to get there. For example, study Moscow metro map to avoid wasting time in infamous Moscow traffic jams.

It's a few years ago but I stayed in the Best Western Vega hotel, it was reasonably cheap and convenient for the metro. I travel solo but on this occasion I was with friends and I found the metro very confusing so needs plenty of research before you set off. I don't know your interests but if you like art, the Tretyakov Gallery is a must see and just outside the entrance is a very nice bar with English speaking staff.

On the outskirts of Moscow is the Koloenskoye estate, just a train ride away, which is beautiful and well worth a visit.

I was warned about the terrible food, the metro, and how dangerous Moscow was but I loved every minute. As others have said, you have to be aware of your surroundings and do plenty of research but it's a wonderful city. Have a great time.
