Mit 2.651 Metern ist das Hohe Licht nach dem Großen Krottenkopf der zweithöchste Gipfel der Allgäuer Alpen. Die Bergtour führt von Oberstdorf aus über Einödsbach, die Enzianhütte und die Rappenseehütte auf den Gipfel.

Etwa 10 Kilometer südlich von Oberstdorf befindet sich Einödsbach. Ab dem Parkplatz an der Fellhornbahn ist die Zufahrt in Richtung des kleinen Weilers nur mit einem Bus möglich. Die Strasse ist für den öffentlichen Verkehr gesperrt. Daher lohnt es sich durchaus mit dem Fahrrad in die Planung dieser Tour zu integrieren.

Knapp 3 Kilometer lang ist der Weg bis zur Abzweigung in Richtung Rappenalptal. Hier endet auch die Busfahrt. Parallel zur Strasse führt auch ein Schotterweg über den Gasthof Birgsau zu dieser Wegkreuzung. Bis hier verläuft der Weg nahezu eben, dann beginnt er über einen Forstweg etwa 1,5 Kilometer anzusteigen bevor schließlich der Gasthof Einödsbach erreicht ist.

Aufstieg über Einödsbach über die Enzianhütte

Einödsbach ist für sein Panorama berühmt. Die kleine Kapelle, dahinter der Bauernhof und hoch darüber die markante Trettach. Hier zweigt ein Weg in Richtung Bacherloch und weiter auf das Waltenberger Haus ab (siehe auch Bergtour auf die Mädelegabel ). Hinter dem Gasthof Einödsbach beginnt der Zustieg über die Petersalpe.

Parallel zur Talsohle des Rappenalptals geht es durch den Wald und teilweise über freie Flächen, bis schließlich die kleine Alpe erreicht ist. Hier beginnt der tatsächliche Aufstieg. In vielen Kehren geht es durch teils dichtes Buschwerk etwa 500 Höhenmeter nach oben, bevor die privat bewirtschaftete Enzianhütte erreicht ist.

Unterhalb des Linkerskopf, einem steilen Grasberg der auch weglos bestiegen werden kann, geht es weiter hinauf zur Rappenseehütte. In der Saison weiß man spätestens beim Anblick des weit sichtbaren Aufstiegs zur DAV-Hütte, ob man alleine oder in größerer Gesellschaft am Gipfel ankommt. Das hat mich bei einem meiner früheren Versuche schon umkehren lassen.

Bis zur Rappenseehütte sind weitere 300 Höhenmeter zu bewältigen, wobei erst die letzten 100 Meter steiler bergauf führen.

Von der Rappenseehütte in Richtung Heilbronner Weg

Will man das Hohe Licht an einem Tag bewältigen, so empfiehlt es sich sehr früh über Einödsbach aufzusteigen. Einerseits aufgrund der Tatsache, dass sowohl Enzian- als auch Rappenseehütte zahlreichen Bergsteigern als Basis für die Begehung des Hohen Lichts oder auch des Heilbronner Wegs dienen, andererseits weil man die Länge der Tour mit gut 5 bis 6 Stunden Aufstieg ab Einödsbach nicht unterschätzen sollte. Und Zeitmanagement ist in den Hochalpen ein wesentlicher Sicherheitsfaktor. Eine Übernachtung in einer der beiden Hütten macht die Tour natürlich entspannter.

Von der Rappenseehütte geht es nördlich des Rappensees über die letzten Alpwiesen nach oben. Nun beginnt der Fels und das Revier der Steinböcke. Diese kann man aber aus meiner Erfahrung heraus besser auf der Seite des Waltenberger Hauses beobachten. Eine gute Stunde Aufstieg in Richtung der Großen Steinscharte muss man  nun einplanen, bevor die Abzweigung zum Gipfel erreicht ist.

Auf dem Gipfel des Hohen Licht

Linker Hand geht es zum Heilbronner Weg, Steinschartenkopf und Bockkarkopf. Rechts stiegt der Felsenweg ein letztes Mal 100 Höhenmeter an, bevor schließlich dieser grandiose Aussichtsgipfel auf über 2.500m Höhe erreicht ist.

An schönen Tagen scheint der Panoramablick unendlich zu sein. Im Norden der Grünten, im Westen der Biberkopf und der Widderstein. Nordöstlich grüßen die Mädelegabel und der Große Krottenkopf . Und im Süden: Gipfel soweit das Auge reicht!

Der Rückweg erfolgt auf demselben Weg bis Einödsbach, wo hoffentlich das Bike steht und die letzten Kilometer bis zum Parkplatz rollend genossen werden können.

Die Bergtour auf das Hohe Licht lässt auch bestens mit anderen Gipfel kombinieren. Nutzt man die Rappenseehütte als Basislager, so kann man beispielsweise auch noch den Biberkopf besteigen, oder auch den Heilbronner Weg begehen. In diesem Fall könnte man auch über das Waltenberger Haus nach Einödsbach absteigen.

Climbing the Hohes Licht (2,651 m), Allgäu

At 2,651 m, the Hohes Licht is the second-tallest mountain in the Allgäu Alps after the Grosser Krottenkopf and its ascent using this route makes for a fun and full day of hiking.

The route begins in the lush surroundings of the Rappental before bringing you up to open, grassy slopes around the Rappensee (a small lake). From there, you work your way through ever-decreasing vegetation before making your final ascent up the rocky slopes to the summit.  

Granted, things can get busy up there, as the Hohes Licht is the first peak (depending on which direction you come from) of the now rather over-subscribed Heilbronner Weg, so if you prefer fewer people on the trail,  you might want to give some extra thought to when best to go.  You just have to keep in mind that the huts start spitting out their occupants pretty early in the morning, especially during the summer. 

However and whenever you choose to visit, fantastic views are assured throughout the day (weather permitting) and plenty of calories will be burned along the way. Encounters with cheeky marmots are also pretty much guaranteed on the grassy slopes surrounding the Rappensee.

Author’s recommendation

• Save yourself a lot of time by taking a bike to Einödsbach from the car park. The other advantage is that the return to Faistenoy is entirely downhill.
• Download the route for offline navigation beforehand. 
• If you're into mountain huts (I tend to avoid them), you have the Enzianhütte and Rappenseehütte to choose from. Refreshments are also available at the Sennalpe Eschbach, Gasthof Einödsbach and the Petersalpe.

Safety information.

• There are some sections that might be considered borderline sketchy, especially to inexperienced and/or hikers who are nervous of heights, but by and large, I think the only thing you really need to worry about is if there are still any snowfields, which is why you might want to consider only going up here from June onwards.
• As there is always the possibility of people above you dislodging rocks during the early stages of the main ascent to the summit, packing a climbing helmet is a good idea.

The route is best followed directly on the app, but to break it down into simple stages, you're looking at the following...

• Parkplatz Faistenoy to the Gasthof Einödsbach (best done by bike)
• Gasthof Einödsbach to the Petersalpe
• Petersalpe to the Enzianhütte
• Enzianhütte to the Rappenseehütte
• Rappenseehütte to the Hohes Licht

You then return using the same route in reverse.

• Driving along the B19, at the 'Rubi' Roundabout (just past the McDonalds and by the Geiger Headquarters), take the third exit to stay on the B19 in the direction of Kleinwalsertal. 
• After 1.2 km, turn left onto Walserstraße (signs for Fellhornbahn, Hӧllwieslift, and Skiflugschanze)
• After 350 m, at the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto Stillachstraße
• Continue for a further 12 km, then your destination will be on the left opposite the Fellhornbahn (the cable car for the Fellhorn)
• I always park at the Parkplatz Faistenoy, but be warned, it's expensive and while you can pay by EC card (and no other credit or debit card), the machine is not super-reliable, so make sure you bring coins.
• Parkster is not currently available here.

• As mentioned elsewhere, I always bring a climbing helmet when ascending anything that is above the tree line, largely because of the risk of people above you dislodging rocks. 
• Otherwise, you need all the standard gear you would take for a long hike at a high altitude.

To the west of Prenten, a hamlet in the municipality of Steeg, there is a car park next to the "Lechtalstraße" road where you can leave your car. It is here that this challenging hike begins, heading along a forest road in a northerly direction. A narrower trail then takes you all the way up to around 1,600 metres above sea level out of the forest into open terrain home to plenty of marmots. Hikers then cross the Wieselkar ridge and the Große Steinscharte mountain (2,262 metres). The final section heads east over the Kleine Steinscharte onto the 2,651 metre Hohes Licht mountain.

Bergtour aufs Hohe Licht in den Allgäuer Alpen

Der Zweithöchste Allgäuer Das Hohe Licht wird häufig in den Heilbronner Weg "miteingebaut", ist aber auch als lange Tagestour von Oberstdorf möglich. Besser ist es jedoch machbar mit der Rappenseehütte als Basislager. 

Über Die A7 Richtung Kempten und dann weiter auf der B12 und B19 über Sonthofen bis nach Oberstdorf. Hier der Beschilderung zum gebührenpflichtigen Parkplatz (Tagesticket 5 Euro, 7-18 Uhr, Stand 2023) der Fellhornbahn folgen. Mit dem Bus oder dem Rad (absperren!) zur Ape Eschbach.

Vom Hohen Licht aus hat man beste Aussicht auf die umliegenden Gipfel der Allgäuer Alpen - vom Hochvogel bis zum Biberkopf.

Wegbeschreibung

Von der Rappenseehütte (Aufstieg von der Alpe Eschbach über Enzianhütte in 3:30 Std, 1190 Hm) geht es bergauf bis zur großen Steinscharte. Dort öffnet sich das Gelände und man betritt einen großen Geröllkessel. Nach der Querung des Kessels in einigen kleinen Serpentinen bergauf bis zur Abzweigung des Heilbronner Wegs. Dort wendet man sich nach rechts. Zunächst noch ein Stück um den Berg herum und schließlich auf einem technisch einfachen alpinen Steig (UIAA bis I, Trittsicherheit, Schwindelfreiheit!) bis zum Gipfel. Abstieg wie Aufstieg.
