Comedy docuseries “The World’s Strangest Jobs,” from Johannesburg-based Mannequin Pictures , one of South Africa’s key production, finance, and distribution companies, has sold to Prime Video the rights to the African continent.
Mannequin is now pursuing sales in all other territories. The eight-part series is hosted by comedian and actor Schalk Bezuidenhout. The popular South African comic, a household name in his country of birth, balances SAFTA winning acting work (“Hotel”) with his bread and butter as a comic. Most recently, he formed part of Netflix’s stand-up comedy show, “Only Jokes Allowed.”
Popular on Variety
The continued push by streamers into the region is no surprise. In a report from Ampere Analysis late last year, which predicted that global streamers could drive 75% growth in sub-Saharan Africa’s subscription video on demand (SVOD) market. With $220 million in annual revenues there for the taking by the end of 2027. The competitive landscape differs from many other parts of the world thanks to Showmax being a serious local competitor to the global streaming platforms.
“The World’s Strangest Jobs” is produced by Delon Bakker and Kyle Ambrose of Mannequin Pictures. The company recently wrapped production on theatrical “London Calling,” helmed by Allan Unger (“Bandit”), starring Josh Duhamel (“Transformers”) and Rick Hoffman (“Suits”).
The Highland Film Group is handling international sales on “London Calling.”

Dozens of local jobs will be created in South Australia through a new contract to upgrade the Royal Australian Air Force’s fleet of P-8A Poseidon aircraft.
The Albanese Government has signed a $139.5 million contract with Boeing Defence Australia to upgrade the Poseidon’s software, systems and sensors at RAAF Base Edinburgh, supporting 50 new highly skilled defence industry jobs.
The Poseidon P-8A aircraft is Australia’s maritime patrol aircraft and this critical work will enhance the aircraft’s anti-submarine warfare, maritime strike, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.
These upgrades will also ensure continued interoperability with Australia’s allies and partners.
Boeing Defence Australia will recruit and train apprentices and supply chain trainees to provide P-8A Poseidon support, providing upskilling and pathways for Australians to gain long-term employment in a critical industry.
Quotes attributable to Minister for Defence Industry, Pat Conroy:
“This announcement creates 50 new jobs and builds on the existing 283-strong workforce currently employed by Boeing Defence Australia at RAAF Base Edinburgh.
“Investing in this critical upgrade to our P-8A Poseidon fleet will create new opportunities for apprentices to learn valuable skills and forge a career that offers long-term and well-paid employment, while also ensuring our Defence Force is equipped with the capabilities it needs to keep Australians safe.”
Media can access imagery of the P-8A Poseidon aircraft here.

San Antonio development groups look for ways to ride city's first European nonstop to more business
N ew connections to Europe could bring more manufacturing, energy, life sciences and cybersecurity jobs to San Antonio, economic development officials said after making connections with business leaders ahead of the city’s first nonstop air service to Germany.
The delegation, which included tourism and city officials, traveled to Frankfurt and London last month.
“We’re really trying to gin up business that will obviously feed into route sustainability for Condor,” Jenna Saucedo-Herrera, president and CEO of regional economic development agency Greater:SATX , said of the Condor Airlines service to Frankfurt starting in May.
RELATED: In London, Abbott signs deal pledging closer trade ties with U.K. as wider deal with U.S. is stalled
Describing the 10 or so meetings that took place during the March 15-19 trip as “highly productive,” she said conversations with several businesses looking to expand in the U.S. could pay dividends for the region. She declined to identify them.
The German market was more industrial in nature, Saucedo-Herrera said. “In fact, Germany writ large, they are a great market for us from an automotive manufacturing perspective.”
With the Toyota Motor Corp. and Navistar truck plants already on San Antonio’s south side, JCB’s agricultural and construction equipment plant in the works and Tesla Inc.’s EV factory outside Austin, San Antonio is well positioned to grow manufacturing businesses.
Tech, cyber, space
The delegation also found opportunities in other sectors, including computer chips and alternative energy technology.
“We want to find a new energy technology company there and then also chip manufacturers, and there’s a lot to be said, from a statewide perspective, about what the governor is doing specifically related to our semiconductor manufacturing sector,” Saucedo-Herrera said. “At the same time, and totally related, on the space and information security side as well.”
The delegation’s visit to the United Kingdom came on the heels of Gov. Greg Abbott’s trip to Europe to forge new trade ties, and the group was in London when Abbott later announced the creation of the Texas Space Commission.
RELATED: ‘ Launchpad for Mars’: Gov. Abbott launches Texas Space Commission, challenges state universities
“People are paying attention,” she said of such moves. “People are asking questions … people are interested.”
Some of the European businesses had recently earned their FedRAMP status — a U.S. government-wide effort outlining security requirements for cloud products and services. The status helps cloud technology companies do business with the U.S. government.
While the cybersecurity leaders the group met with knew about Washington D.C.’s broad cybersecurity footprint, some were unaware of San Antonio’s growing importance in the industry.
“A lot (of cybersecurity companies) are looking … in the D.C. area, but also contemplating satellite offices, regional offices and even hiring remote talent,” she said.
RELATED: Europe’s largest cybersecurity conference coming to San Antonio in 2025
All the companies the San Antonio group met with meet Greater:SATX’s requirements to become a so-called development project, Saucedo-Herrera said. The requirements include real estate needs, full-time employee headcount and a need for capital investment.
She said at least two of the European-based companies they met with “are actively working site location searches” so the delegation's visit timely for them.
Cybersecurity businesses are the top industry that qualify for Greater:SATX support, Saucedo-Herrera said. Office-type deals, that include cybersecurity, information technology, life sciences and financial services have doubled since this time last year.
International push
The delegation included Saucedo-Herrera and another Greater:SATX staffer; Marc Anderson, president and CEO of Visit San Antonio and two of his team members; and city reps included City Manager Erik Walsh and Airports Director Jesus Saenz.
The city’s push into Europe gained momentum two years ago as Visit San Antonio began focusing more on international development than domestic or even markets within driving distance.
About the same time Greater:SATX also began diversifying its target markets. The city, Saucedo-Herrera said, has been in key markets like Japan and Mexico for decades, and it’s looking to expand.
“So today, the U.K. is a market for us … Germany’s a market for us. We’re still heavily invested in Japan but we also have an office and or consultant … in South Korea as well,” she said. “In fact, South Korea is one of our top-performing international geographies right now from a pipeline development perspective.”
READ MORE: S.A.’s first European flight starts in May; possibility of more frequent service rides on ticket sales
She said the shift toward focusing on international deals comes in part due to market changes. International deals used to take longer but those timelines are shrinking at the same time timelines for domestic deals are getting longer.
“I think north of 50% of the deals (in Greater:SATX’s pipeline) are international,” she said. “So, we’re going to obviously reallocate our resources where we’re seeing the highest return.”
She said the Condor service between San Antonio and Frankfurt will help.
“The story is much more than just about Frankfurt. It’s really about that flight being a gateway to the rest of Europe for San Antonio travelers,” she said.
The world's first doggy jet service will cost you $6K for a one-way ticket
Dogs will soon be able to experience their own “ fur st” class flight with the launch of the world’s first jet charter company specifically designed for man’s best friend.
BARK, the dog toy company that coordinates the popular treat subscription BarkBox, is partnering with a jet charter service to take away the challenges of long-distance traveling with dogs, according to a press release. BARK Air, as the company calls it, offers the “white glove experience typical of a human’s first-class experience and redirected all that pampering to pooches.”
Taking dogs on airplanes is, typically, a stressful endeavor with different airlines having different policies for pet travel. For example, American Airlines allows small dogs in a carrier to be placed under the seat in front, but larger dogs are put in the cargo space, which has been found to be stressful for the pet. For United Airlines , pets can fly in the cabin if there’s enough space, but they must fit in a carrier under the seat in front.
“We are excited to take the insights we’ve learned over years to create an experience that is truly dog-first, which is drastically different from just accepting dogs – from the ground to the skies,” said Matt Meeker, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at BARK, in a statement.

Learn more: Best travel insurance
However, you’ll need to pay a hefty fee for the dog-friendly flight. For now, a ticket for just one dog and one human will run you at least $6,000 one way.
The first BARK Air flights will take off on May 23, and so far, there are only two flight routes available, both from New York’s Westchester County Airport. From New York to London’s Stansted Airport, it’ll cost $8,000 one-way and to Los Angeles’s Van Nuys Airport will cost $6,000 one-way. Tickets are available for purchase on April 11.
Not only does BARK Air allow dogs, it also focuses on the furry friends by treating them like VIPs, the press release said. BARK Air passengers can skip TSA checkpoints and screenings and instead experience a simple check-in process where they can meet the other dogs on the flight and the humans are served a meal cooked by on-site chefs.
When boarding, a BARK Air concierge is on-hand to ensure the dogs are socializing and adjusting to the environment well.
Each flight will undergo “Dogs Fly First” flight prep that includes “calming pheromones, music, and colors that pups prefer.” To make the flying experience easier and more enjoyable, dogs have access to various aids such as calming treats, noise-canceling ear muffs, and calming jackets.
During takeoff and descent, dogs are given a beverage of their choice to help their ears adjust to cabin pressurization. Of course, there will be plenty of treats on the flight.
