Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Then, the Hiking in Sardinia walking tour follows the coastal trails to Cala Gonone, where you can pack a picnic basket of fine local foods to lay out next to the deep blue of the ocean. Itinerary for Hiking in Sardinia

Arrival in sardinia.

The first day of your walking tour of Sardinia is all for relaxing. You’ll stay in Oliena, an idyllic town with great paths to explore. For dinner, tuck into local carasau bread and Cannonau wine.

Hiking the Monte Corrasi loop

The first adventure of your walking tour of Sardinia starts with a trek up one of the local mountains, where the views are simply perfect. From the peak, you can see all the way over to the Supramonte Mountains and deep valleys. Bring a camera!

Walk to Su Gologone

Today, you’ll trek through the Holm oak forest, which is perfectly quiet and peaceful. It’ll lead you to sheer limestone formations over 800 metres tall. Views of the valleys of Oliena and Guthiddai peek through as you approach a narrow canyon called Laghetto Sorgenti Carsiche Su Gologone, which is 108 metres deep and the vital water supply of Sardinia.

Walk to Tiscali

Start the morning with a transfer to Rio Flumineddu, where you’ll begin a hike along the Scala de Surtana Valley. Climb up to a plateau where two beautiful, recently restored ovili huts hide. Feel free to enter and see the impressive craftsmanship needed to create them. Hike back down the valley wall to make it to the foot of Monte Tiscali. Now you’re headed up! Near the peak, the remains of a prehistoric Nuraghe village are hidden inside a cave. Creep into the round opening, get up close to the remains, and appreciate the eerie silence of the cave. Then, you’ll descend to the River Flumineddu, where you’ll be whisked away to the hotel for the evening.

Explore Gola di Gorropu or Silana

Today, your walk will take you into Italy’s deepest gorge, the Gola di Gorropu. You’ll be surrounded by stark white walls over 350 metres high, and you’ll feel like you’re deep in the belly of the earth- a once in a lifetime experience.

Those who aren’t fans of gorges have the option to hike along the mountain ridge, beginning close to the Silana Pass and travelling to the town of Dorgali. The views of the Gulf of Orosei coast are wonderful, and the Supramonte mountains loom in the distance.

Trek to Cala Gonone

Start the next day of your Sardinia walking tour with a quick transfer to Dorgali, where you’ll stroll the tunnel that connects Dorgali with Cala Gonone. You’ll end up atop Monte Bardia, and then descend into the nearby valleys- although you won’t want to leave the views! To end the day, choose to either go straight to Cala Gonone or make the ascent up Monte Irveri before you relax for the evening.

Cala Luna beach and boat to Cala Gonone

Get ready to soak up the sun! Today, you have a choice between boat trips to the Blue Marina sea cave, a visit to the Nuraghe Mannu site, or diving, kayaking, or fishing.

Alternately, you can walk to Cuccuru su Corvu to the renowned Cala Luna beach, which is delightfully private and perfect for a picnic and a swim. No matter what you choose to do, the day is yours on the sea. Bliss!

Farewell, Cala Gonone!

Have one last breakfast by the sea before packing your bags to head home. Or, book some extra days to keep soaking up the sun.

Hiking in Sardinia

Self-guided walking holiday in the supramonte mountains on sardinia’s wild east coast.

Captivating coastlines and stark inland wilderness welcome you on this self-guided hike in Sardinia’s wild east. This is a spectacularly rugged landscape, where 800-meter-high limestone cliffs rise from the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea. You will walk along the rough, ragged ridges of the Supramonte Mountains and follow narrow footpaths through the spectacular Gola di Gorropu gorge; one of Europe’s deepest canyons, with impressive white walls towering some 350 m high on both sides.

As if the scenery wasn’t enough, the hills are also dotted with fascinating historical sites. You will see one of the best of these near the top of Mount Tiscali , where you’ll find the ruins of a Nuragic village that dates back to the 6th century BC.

Finally, you head to the Gulf of Orosei , 40 km of beautiful coastline along the turquoise Mediterranean. Reward yourself for your efforts with a refreshing swim at Cala Luna – a stunning crescent-shaped beach which can only be reached on foot or by boat.

The walks are poorly to moderately marked, often on uneven footpaths, small tracks amongst shrubs and, on a rare occasion, on small gravel roads. Some routes (such as Monte Tiscali) are a bit demanding, with some sections of (easy) climbing in a desolate limestone area, with no springs or villages along the way.

Day 1: Arrive in Sardinia and relax

Arrive in Sardinia and take a local public bus to Oliena, where you are met and taken by car to the hotel located at the base of Monte Corrasi in a restored old farm building. Relax with a glass of  Cannonau  wine, a local speciality.

Overnight: Monte Maccione/Oliena with dinner included

Day 2: Monte Corrasi loop walk

Distance: 10 km | Ascent: 825 m | Descent: 815 m | 5 hrs approx.

Begin the day with a hearty breakfast on the outdoor terrace and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Gennargentu National Park. Gaze out at the calcareous Supramonte Mountains and the stunning valleys which await you on your hike.

Today’s route is not particularly difficult; the well-marked trail gradually ascends to a plateau, before returning on a different route.

Day 3: From Monte Maccione to Su Gologone spring

Distance: 14 km | Ascent: 395 m | Descent: 990 m | 5 hrs approx.

Today’s walk leads you through the beautiful Holm oak woods that cover the lower slopes of the Supramonte. During the walk you will have numerous great views of the valleys of Oliena and Guthiddai. If you wish you can climb the steep, rocky slope of the Scala di Sovana to the Punta Cusidore, halfway along today’s walk.

At the end of the walk you have the option of continuing for another 2 km to the limestone source of Su Gologone. This ‘Laghetto Sorgenti Carsiche Su Gologone’ is a narrow canyon, which is 108 m deep, and the most important water supply of Sardinia.

Overnight: Dorgali with dinner included

Day 4: From Rio Flumineddu to Tiscali via ovili huts

Distance: 11 km | Ascent: 700 m | Descent: 700 m | 5 hrs approx.

Today begins with a short transfer to Rio Flumineddu (15min). You then start walking along the Scala de Surtana valley; a right turn leads you to a limestone plateau where 2 beautiful ovili huts have been recently restored: have a look inside to admire the fine technique that is needed to build them. You descend again to the valley before starting your ascent of Monte Tiscali. Near the top you can visit the remains of a prehistoric Nuraghe village. After passing through the wooded gorge of Surtana, you descend to the Flumineddu river, where you will be picked up for a short ride back to the hotel.

Day 5: Gola di Gorropu walk or alternative route to Silana

Distance: 11 km | Ascent: 320 m | Descent: 689 m | 3½ hrs approx.

Delve deep into Italy’s deepest gorge: the Gola di Gorropu, with its stunning, vertical white walls over 350 m high. It’s a long but easy walk to get there, where you can peer into the belly of the earth and scramble over the huge boulders within. Short morning and afternoon transfer to/from the start of the walk.

Alternative walk: Suttaterra to Dorgali

Distance: 15 km | Ascent: 341 m | Descent: 177 m | 5 hrs approx.

This route follows the mountain ridge, starting near the Silana Pass and going all the way to the town of Dorgali. Along the route there are spectacular coastal views of the Gulf of Orosei and inland to the Supramonte range. The route is quite easy, without any remarkable ascents or descents; it is not marked but the path is well-beaten.

Day 6: Walk from Dorgali to Cala Gonone

Distance: 10 km | Ascent: 486 m | Descent: 958 m | 4 hrs approx.

A short transfer takes you just outside Dorgali ,  where you start the walk via an old tunnel that connects Dorgali with Cala Gonone. The track climbs to the top of Monte Bardia, from where there is a long gradual descent. You have several great views into both valleys during the walk.

Optional ascent of Monte Irveri (616 m).

Overnight: Cala Gonone

Day 7: Cala Luna beach

Today you can choose among two different walking routes or a variety of other activities. From Cala Gonone you can choose between several boat trips (like the visit to the Blue Marina sea cave, which you will also pass if you return from Cala Luna by boat). Another option is to visit the Nuraghe Mannu site. You can also go diving, kayaking and fishing

Walk option 1: Cuccuru su Corvu to Cala Gonone

Distance: 16 km | Ascent: 569 m | Descent: 946 m | 6 hrs approx.

Optional transfer to the start of the walk from where you climb to Sedda e s’Atta and enjoy a stunning panoramic view over the gulf. You then descend into a canyon and follow the river bed to the famous Cala Luna beach (which can only be reached on foot or by boat) Take a refreshing swim and enjoy a picnic lunch before continuing along the coastal trail to Cala Gonone.

Walk option 2: Cala Gonone to Cala Luna

Distance: 9 km | Ascent: 405 m | Descent: 402 m | 4 hrs approx.

Starting from the harbour of Cala Gonone, you follow the coastal road to Cala Fuili. From here, you take another winding coastal trail that brings you to the beautiful beach of Cala Luna. You can return the same way you came or take a boat back.

Day 8: Arrivederci Cala Gonone!

Meet your guide and the rest of your team for a meet and greet session and a technical introduction. Accommodation: 3* hotel in Cala Gonone Luggage access: Yes

Cala Gonone, Sardinia

Today includes a half-day session for rope skills training in a rugged canyon in the Supramonte region. The series of training abseils will gradually get more challenging, simply to make sure everyone is confident with abseiling. Return to Cala Gonone and explore the town on your own—try out pizza, local wine, or gelato. Tomorrow the trek begins. Accommodation: 3* hotel in Cala Gonone Luggage access : Yes Meals: Breakfast and lunch Activity time : 3-4 hours Elevation: +50 m / +165 ft | -200 m / -655 ft

Harness on a beach in Sardinia

Transfer to Pedra Longa to begin the trek. Enjoy your first, relatively-non-technical day except for a short upwards scramble (though usually not required, it may be roped so harnesses and ropes will be carried just in case). There will also be downclimbing a short section via a juniper tree attached to the mountainside. Tonight you’ll sleep out (bivouac) under the stars, in a small clearing near rocky Portu Pedrosu. A crew will arrive by boat to deliver water and supplies. Accommodation: Bivouac Luggage access: No Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Hiking: 9 hours Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles Elevation: +1,200 m / +3,940 ft | -1,200 m / -3,940 ft

Pedra Longa, Sardinia

Juniper trees and branches will aid your progress today—they’re living history, as locals have engineered and worked with this hardy tree in this manner for centuries. You’ll also come across Sardinian shepherds’s hut enroute, called “oviles”. Going up and over Punta Salinas, you’ll pass through the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage beach of Cala Goloritzè, famous for its monumental rock spire and azure seas. Have your second food stop as there’s 2 more hours left of trekking today (with 2 roped climbing sections) to take you to the wild bivvy spot up on the plateau of Piredda. The crew will greet you there and resupply. Accommodation: Bivouac Luggage access: No Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Hiking: 8.5 hours Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles Elevation: +1,400 m / +4,595 ft | -900 m / -2,955 ft

Cala Goloritzè beach

More technical climbing and abseiling begins today! The first part of the day is spent trekking, dropping down to the sea. Then you’ll have a few short abseils scattered across the whole afternoon before you reach the bivouac point for the night—which is a cave. The route will take you from Punta Salinas to Bacu su Felieu with some elevation change to tackle. Accommodation: Bivouac Luggage access: No Meals: Not included, you bring a dehydrated meal for tonight Hiking: 6 hours Distance: 6 km / 3.8 miles Elevation: +660 m / +2,165 ft | -1,160 m / -3,805 ft

Juniper trees, Selvaggio Blu

Abseil from the bivouac spots and trek for a couple of hours. You’ll have 2 longer abseils in the afternoon, and later on you’ll have some chained sections, climbing sections, and shorter abseils. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot the local Sardinian mouflon, tenacious characters able to negotiate impossibly steep terrain. Gaze down over the Mediterranean pristine turquoise waters as you lower your way down to the beach, where you’ll enjoy a locally-sourced dinner. There’s a planned boat resupply. Accommodation: Bivouac Luggage access : No Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Hiking: 6.5 hours Distance: 7 km / 4.3 miles Elevation: +1,150 m / +3,775 ft | -1,150 m / -3,775 ft

Sardinian mouflon

This last non-technical day is a perfect end to your trek. Sea permitting, the crew will arrive to take the climbing kit to make your daypacks lighter. Enjoy this morning’s final section of the trek as you hike to Cala Luna for a celebratory lunch on the beach. Relax on the spectacular boat trip over the Cala Gonone to spend the final night at a hotel Accommodation: Bivouac Luggage access : Yes Meals: Breakfast and lunch Hiking: 3.5 hours Distance: 8 km / 5 miles Elevation: +1,200 m / +3940 ft | -1,200 m / -3,940 ft

Cala Sisine, Sardinia

There will be a private group transfer back to Olbia this morning after breakfast, which gives you a great opportunity to explore Olbia before heading back home. Time permitting, enjoy those last few hours on the beautiful beaches of Olbia or soak up the local history, views, and cuisine. If you’d like to stay longer, just ask your guides for some recommendations! Meals: Breakfast

This itinerary is designed to complete the Selvaggio Blu Trek in a relatively self-contained way—this means minimal resupply points, some of which are dependent on sea conditions. Please be aware that if the sea does not permit small vessels to reach beaches as planned, then more food and water will need to be carried, and Day 7 could potentially involve heavier day sacks.

Cloud 9 planned everything for our group: Food, lodging, baggage transportation and excellent hiking plans. The food and service in the hotels was great and staffs were friendly and helpful! I would highly recommend Cloud 9 for anyone planning a trip.

What an incredible experience. Our guide was fantastic, teaching our kids so many things along the way. Highly recommend!

What you get on this adventure:

  • An experienced, UIAGM-certified guide with extensive knowledge of the area
  • 8-day hiking tour along the Selvaggio Blu Trek
  • Accommodation (3 nights in a hotel in Cala Gonone & bivvy bags and large tarpaulin while sleeping on trek)
  • Most meals (all breakfasts and lunches, 4 dinners)
  • Transportation during the tour
  • All necessary equipment (ropes, bivouac, cooking stoves)
  • Airport pick-up and drop-off

What’s not included:

  • Transportation to Italy
  • 3 dinners (details in the itinerary)
  • Personal drinks and snacks
  • Guide gratuities — optional

Often described as one of the most challenging treks in the world, the Selvaggio Blu Trek is a 40-kilometer (25-mile) route running along the east coast of Sardinia that demands excellent fitness. This is a tough trek on a rough trail with steep climbs and scree descents. Daily distances are between 7-12 km (4-7.5 miles) with ascents and descents of up to 1,000 m (3,280 ft) as well as abseiling and climbing sections.

In order to join this tour, you must have excellent fitness and not be afraid of heights. Keep in mind that you’ll be carrying a 10-15 kg bag (22-33 lbs). Previous experience with climbing and abseiling is essential (putting yourself onto a prepared abseil rope, though your IFMGA-qualified guide will provide instruction on the ropes section). Any experience with via ferrata, wild camping, and cooking by stove is not necessary, but more than welcome.

Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

  • Backpack large enough to carry all the items listed + some group equipment (around a 45-60L bag)
  • Hiking poles — optional
  • Week’s worth hiking clothing
  • Water bottle or hydration bladder (2L capacity)
  • Lightweight hiking boots or shoes
  • Spare clothes for layering
  • Waterproof rain jacket
  • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Camera — optional (but recommended)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

This adventure along the Selvaggio Blu Trek is designed in a way to make sure you’re well-rested and prepared prior to starting the trek. This involves staying at a hotel for the first two nights, at which time you’ll have access to all your luggage.

However, as soon as you start your trek (on Day 3), you’ll only carry what you need for the duration of those few days while sleeping under the stars. You’ll be sleeping in bivvy bags with a large tarpaulin, and you’ll have to carry your personal belongings as well as a share of the group equipment. You can expect your backpack to weigh between 10-15 kg (22-33 lbs), so make sure you have a backpack large enough to carry everything you need. You’ll have access to the rest of the luggage as soon as you end your trek, which is on Day 7 when you’ll get a good night’s sleep in a hotel.

Group sizes and prices:

  • For this guided hiking tour along the Selvaggio Blu Trek, the maximum client-to-guide ratio is 8:1.
  • It takes a minimum of 4 people for this tour to operate, and 8 is the maximum group size.
  • The cost does not decrease as the group grows.

When was the last time you broke bread with a shepherd? Were you sitting at a stone table in his garden, a Sardinian breeze rustling the leaves, with a corkwood plate of his homemade specialties? It's a simple and simply remarkable event, just one of many we'll arrange for you in this amazing week of Mediterranean adventure. Travel between the isles of Sardinia and Corsica and you'll only venture eight miles…but they're worlds apart. Corsica—part of France, but defiantly non-French—is blanketed in fragrant herbs and dotted with quaint villages. Sardinia seeks adventure. Travel through the island and see how it's more rustic, mysterious; with a few thousand years of Phoenician, Spanish and Italian blood in its veins. Together, these two gorgeous islands are some of the least-touristed spots in Europe. When you leave behind the yacht-studded harbors for the mountains, pastures and vineyards of the interior, you have the rarest of privileges—to see and experience countryside and culture that seem to have stood still in time.

• Wander the quiet, pedestrian-only streets of Alghero, then enjoy an authentic cooking class with locally-caught seafood

• Take a light walk to a castle, perched on a promontory overlooking Castelsardo

• Stroll in chestnut forests and taste the olive oil at a historic press

• After picking up lunch in Sartene, walk in a nature reserve and explore fascinating 5,000-year-old carved stone monoliths.

• Ferry to Porto Cervo on Sardinia's Costa Smeralda

• Visit with a local baker and learn about regional cuisine

• Explore an archeological site with Europe's oldest stone towers

• Relax over lunch with a local shepherd in his garden

Hiking in Sardinia: The Best Trails On The Island

Sardinia is an island of natural beauty, surrounded by turquoise waters and inhabited by an incredibly diverse population. For the active traveller, there are hiking trails of every kind. You can find stunning routes everywhere, from the coastal paths and beaches to beautiful national parks and mountain gorges.

Due to each trail's uniqueness, drawing up a ranking isn’t easy. Therefore, this guide will introduce those that will surely leave you speechless, whether it’s a mountain trail, a beach walk or a visit to an archaeological site.

The best season for hiking in Sardinia is in the spring, from March to May and in autumn, from September to November. These months offer the best weather conditions and sunshine, allowing you to enjoy Sardinia’s hiking trails of astonishing beauty.

If you are excited to learn more about what Sardinia offers, read on to discover the best hiking opportunities by area.

Supramonte Mountains

The Supramonte is a dolomitic limestone mountain range located in central-eastern Sardinia. It stretches over 35,000 hectares of land, including the municipalities of Baunei, Dorgali, Oliena, Urzulei and Orgosolo. The prominent peak of Monte Corrasi towers over the mountain range with 1,463 altitudes. At the same time, highland rivers cross them, creating deep ravines and several underground caves, such as the Grotta del Bue Marino.

This area is uninhabited and occupied by limestone cliffs, deep canyons and underground caves. You will find the most popular trails stretching between the lush gorges of the Gorropu Canyon and Tiscali and the splendid little beaches of Cala Fuili, Cala Luna and Goloritzé.

Gola Di Gorropu

The Gola Di Gorropu is a loop trail near Dorgali and takes about 9 hours to complete. It is generally considered a challenging route, but with spectacular views. It stretches over 28.5 km through the Gorropu Canyon, where you can enjoy the gorges' silent beauty. You might come across mountain bikers, but the trail is mainly used by people that appreciate long and strenuous hikes surrounded by the stillness of nature.

Cala Luna - Grotte Blu Marino

This trail takes over 3 hours to complete and is less challenging than the Gole Di Gorropu. It is a popular 10km trail for birding, hiking, and running throughout the year, meaning that you will likely come across other people. The trail starts at Cala di Fuili and follows the Cala Luna path, eventually heading to the Cala Luna beach. This area is known for its caves and beautiful beach panorama, offering snorkelling and diving in the crystal blue waters of the Ziu Santoru beach.

This out-and-back trail near Dorgali is only 2.7km long and is quite an easy but rocky route. It takes less than an hour to complete, and you will likely cross paths with bird enthusiasts and other hikers while exploring. If you follow the trail for about 40 mins, you will get to the breathtaking ancient cave of Grotta del Bue.

Sulcis-Iglesiente

The Sulcis-Iglesiente mountains are the most ancient formations of Sardinia in the southwest, characterised by a vast Mediterranean scrub forest and incredible landscapes. The Sulcis-Iglesiente is a historic mining region of the island, mainly known for its richness of coal and minerals. It is only now returning to life thanks to being valued by tourists and, thus, the tourism industry. Due to the area’s history, the most prominent trails have followed the old mining trails that unite the municipalities with a long history.

Il Camino di Santa Barbara

This trail is the stage 2 part of the Il Camino di Santa Barbara near the old mining town of Iglesias. It stretches over 6.1 km and takes an average of 2 hours to complete. The Il Camino is a historical, cultural and religious path connecting with ancient mining paths in the Sulcis-Iglesente mountains. Stage 2 section starts from Nebida and reaches the limestone cliffs of Musua. As the trail is relatively short compared to others, it allows plenty of time to discover the extraordinary structures at Laveria Lamarmora and Porto Flavia.

Canal Grande - Portu Sciusciau

The Canal Grande is quite a challenging trail with its 12.9km loop over several cliffs - not for the faint of heart. It starts near the town of Iglesias and takes just over 4 hours to complete. Although the beginning of the trail is quite demanding, the return part of the loop is less strenuous and allows you to admire the splendid view.

Buggerru - Cala Domestica

This trail is a beautiful 5km excursion starting at the town of Buggerru, with an average of 1 h 20 min to complete. The path is appropriate for both hikers and bikers following the Via della Ferrovia, passing by Sa Caletta and finally arriving at the breathtaking beaches of Cala Domestica.

Gennargentu Mountains

The Gennargentu is the most prominent mountain range in Sardinia, with its highest peak - the Punta La Marmora - reaching 1834m altitude. It is often covered with snow for short periods in the winter and is accessible to hikers the rest of the year. On the clearest days, hikers can see as far as the Gulf of Cagliari, and it is exceptionally splendid to reach in the evening.

The Gennargentu encompasses the Nuoro and Ogliastra provinces and forms a part of the Gennargentu National Park. Its ancient rock types include schist, limestone and granite.

Cala Goloritze

The trail to Cala Goloritze is 7.2km long and takes just over 3 hours to complete. It's considered a moderately challenging route near Baunei, leading to the stunning beach of Cala Goloritze. The beach is one of the most popular in Sardinia and was created by a landslide in 1962. Rock climbers also frequent the area, making it one of the central tourist attractions from March through November.

Selvaggio Blue: Pedra Longa - Cala Sisine

This long, 77.1km trail in the Gulf of Orisei National Park starts near Baunei and is generally recommended to complete in stages as it takes around 37,5h. The trail departs from Pedra Longa, and you will follow the paths inland after crossing a couple of streams. After a long journey, it returns to the coast and reaches the Selvaggio Blu and other trails, finally arriving at Cala Sisine.

Gola su Gorroppu

The Gola su Gorroppu is an 8.4km trail in the National Park of the Gulf of Ortisei, near Urzulei. This moderately challenging route will take you on a four-hour journey from the Genna Silana Pass, arriving at the spectacular Gorroppu Canyon. The lush canyon with its old and gigantic trees is one of the gems of Sardinia, popular with hikers and rock climbers alike. Visitors must stay quiet in the canyon to protect the area's peacefulness and not disturb wildlife.

Pedra Longa - Santa Maria Navarrese

This trail is 9.3km from Pedra Longa, near Baunei. It is a moderate route and takes around 3 hours to complete. The views along the trail are stunning and definitely worth your time. However, avoid the summer's hottest times of the day, as there isn’t much shade. The best time to visit this area is between March and November.

Medio Campidano

The fertile plain of the Campidano extends from Cagliari to Oristano and includes the massif of Monte Linas and the volcanoes of Guspini and Arbus. The coastal area of the Campidano, including Costa Verde and Piscinas, is exquisite and wild, while the living dunes of the desert are among the highest in Europe.

Cala Mosca - Sella del Diavolo

Enjoy this moderately challenging loop trail starting at Cala Mosca. It generally takes about 2 hours to complete and is 6.4km. This is a prevalent route, so you are likely to encounter other hikers on your way to the stunning city of Cagliari with the Poetto and the coast, followed by a climb to the Sella del Diavolo.

Il Giro del Mare

The Il Giro del Mare is a 104.6km loop trail near the town of San Gavino Monreale, passing through Montevecchio before returning to the starting point. The trail is moderately challenging and is especially popular with cyclists as it is a classic itinerary for Sardinian cyclists.

Monte Arcuentu

The exciting trail of Monte Arcuentu starts near Arbus and takes about 2,5 hours to complete. Its 459m elevation is considered a moderately challenging route with great views and an excellent 5.3km challenge.

In the northeastern part of Sardinia, the beautiful granite archipelago of Gallura and La Maddalena enchants every visitor, and the white limestones of Tavolara Island invite curious hikers.

Tavolara’s limestone massif over granite is 5km long and 1km wide, showing off its beautiful cliffs above crystal blue waters popular with scuba divers. The island is inhabited only by a few families, as the government has restricted a large area for military personnel. The nearest town to Tavolara is Olbia, and a small fishing village called Porto San Paolo is across the strait from the island.

Punta Cannone

The Punta Cannone is a challenging hike with more than 1100m elevation gain and takes nearly 6 hours to complete. This 10.3km out-and-back trail takes you from the western beaches to the majestic top of the Punta Cannone at 558m above sea level and back to the protected marine area.

Il Sentiero delle Due Signori

The beautiful pilgrimage near Olbia will take around 5 hours to complete the 13km out-and-back trail. This moderately challenging journey will take you to the famous churches of Nostra Signora di Cabu Abbas and the Madonna del Monte and allow you to admire the magnificent views of Olbia and the Aranci golf course.

Alghero and the Asinara Island

In the Northeastern part of Sardinia, the Sassari region is encompassed by the beautiful Catalan city of Alghero and the island of Asinara from the north. The immense plains of Nurra stretch to the beaches of Capo Caccia and Pelosa Beach at Stintino in the west.

Grotta della Dragunara

The 6.1km out-and-back trail of Grotta della Dragunara is a moderate hike and takes around 2 hours to complete. With its dazzling views, this famous route is often interrupted by landslides, but there are alternative routes to get around those areas. As there isn’t much shade, taking plenty of water with you on a hot summer day when departing from Alghero is recommended.

Asinara Island

The “donkey-inhabited” island of Asinara is uninhabited by people and is located at the northwestern tip of Sardinia. Its 52 km2 area boasts impressive steep and rocky coasts and, due to the scarcity of fresh water, a predominantly low Mediterranean scrub as its vegetation.

Asinara Island is part of the Asinara National Park and is now considered a wildlife and marine preserve. As suggested by its name, the island is home to wild albino donkeys.

The island is very popular for outdoor activities like hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. The trails of Punta della Scomunica, Cala Reale, Asinara Fornelli and Cala Ponzesi show you the island's extraordinary beauty with an excellent panorama along the way.

Porto Conte Marina - Punta del Giglio

This route starts near Alghero from the Porto Conte marina and takes you on a 6.9km excursion to Punta del Giglio. This coastal trail offers a phenomenal view of Porto Conte bay and leads you to one of the most important caves containing the fossils of the extinct dwarf deer - the Grotta dei Cervi. The hike takes around 2 hours and is also suitable for mountain biking.

Domus de Maria & Pula

Domus de Maria is a municipality south of Sardinia, approximately 35 km southwest of Cagliari and bordered by Santadi, Teulada, and Pula from the east.

Sunny beaches characterise the Domus de Maria area, green mountains with granite peaks, and a Mediterranean scrub covering the hills emanating vibrant colours and fragrant essences.

Pula is home to much of Sardinia's natural, archaeological, and cultural heritage. The archaeological park of Nora, the ancient ruins of Capo Pula, and the lush and enchanting forest of Is Cannoneris are heaven for trekkers and hikers and a treasure trove of rare plants and rocky formations.

Cala Cipolla

The Cala Cipolla is a 13.7 km out-and-back trail near Domus de Maria, starting from the splendid Cala Cipolla cove, taking you on a coastal excursion to Tuerredda Beach. The view from here is breathtaking; the blue and emerald green waters and the beach's white sands comprise one of the most pristine spots in Sardinia. The route is moderately challenging and takes about 3,5 hours to complete. When you arrive at Tuerredda Beach, you can get to the uninhabited island with a 150m swim across the sparkling waters and enjoy the view of ancient remains of the Punic-Phoenician civilisation.

The Roman Road to Su Cordolinu

This trail starts from Pinus Village in Pula, a famous summer residence, and takes you to Su Cordolinu island along the ancient Roman Road. This excursion is 10 km that, takes less than 3 hours to complete and is one of the loveliest walks on the island. The trail is also suitable for bikers, making it a busy area for tourists and all lovers of the splendid coastal views.

Cycling in Sardinia

My husband and I had a wonderful time touring the west coast of Sardegna. The scenery was absolutely magical. The level of riding was on the high end of medium difficulty. We could not have completed the 320 kms in 6 days without the e-bikes. The gps app was fantastic. We were leary about going self-guided prior to the tour, but the gps app made it very easy to navigate. The accommodations were a bit volatile, some nice, some not so nice. First, one of the agritourismos charged us 40 euro per person for a very mediocre meal. Unfortunately, we had to eat there as there were no other options. Additionally, they had a mean little dog that unprovoked, nipped my husband (Sa Perda Mercada). Secondly, in Gonessa at B&B Domus de Janas, there was hardly a breakfast and it wasn't easy getting access to the accommodation, i.e no service. Of the other accommodations, Villa Canu and Hotel Le Torri were nice because they had pools, Muma Hostel was acceptable, agritourismo Terranieddas was in a beautiful setting and they served a wonderful meal for 30 euro which they let us split, i.e. 15 euro per person, the Marin hotel was just ok, but they had extremely friendly and helpful employees and the best breakfast of the trip. Additionally, I didn't find the man that ran the orientation (and also led the guided tour) very friendly or helpful to those not on the guided tour. Finally, it would improve the tour for the non-guided participants if the gps routes had more information regarding stops for drinks and food along the way. In summary, we thoroughly enjoyed the trip, met some nice people along the way and we would definitely, highly recommend this trip to others. We only offer criticisms to help better the Dolcevita experience for future participants.

The Heart of Sardinia

From the gennargentu mountains to the sea.

The second largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is perhaps best known for its azure coastline and clear waters.  However, the centre of the island reveals rugged mountains, Bronze-Age treasures and a cuisine which still follows the shepherds’ traditions of centuries gone by. We start this tour in the evocative town of Cagliari, on the southern coast of Sardinia, before heading inland to the Gennargentu mountains with their sweeping views of the dramatic landscape. We move to the east of the island, an area often overlooked by visitors, to explore hidden villages, pristine coves and high mountain panoramas. The tour finishes at Olbia airport, on the north-east coast, before we continue on to discover the captivating island of Corsica. We expect some hikers will opt to book the two tours together and explore both islands on the same holiday.

This tour starts in Cagliari and finishes in Olbia. Many hikers choose to extend their holidays by seeing more of Italy so with good connecting flights from Cagliari and Olbia the mainland is easy to visit. For more ideas on where to go visit our  City Guide  page.

Tour Highlights

Discover Sardinia’s unique Bronze-Age sites Hike to the highest points on the island with unbroken views to the Mediterranean Sea Enjoy a traditional Sardinian lunch prepared by local shepherds

Walking/Terrain

There are 5 days of walking on the trip. We walk on strade bianche (dirt roads), mule tracks and some rocky mountain trails. There are some significant ascents and descents of up to 500 metres. The walking is quite rugged in places, so sturdy walking boots, with good ankle support, are essential. Walking poles are highly recommended, especially on steeper sections.  Whilst the climate is generally good at this time of year, we are walking in the mountains so need to be prepared for changes in conditions.

Shortest/Longest Day:  4km/2.5 miles: 14.2km/8.8 miles

We have graded this hike a  Level 3 . Some of our tours are more challenging than others, so see how we  grade our hikes  to make sure you choose the right one for you. Meals provided: dinner.

We begin our day with a short drive into the Lanaittu Valley to the Sa Oche Refuge where our walk starts. We set out from Sa Oche, initially along a wide gravel road which later narrows to a rocky footpath, as we climb up to the ancient site of the village of Tiscali, located in a depression at the top of the mountain of the same name. Invisible until you climb down into the depression, it's thought the village was built here for defensive reasons. A number of nuraghe dating back to the first millennium BC can be seen. The Nuragic civilization of Sardinia lasted from the 1800 BC (Bronze Age) to the 2nd century BC, with its name deriving from the nuraghe, a fortress-tower construction, the remains of which now dot the Sardinian landscape. The cult of water was an important element of the Nuragic religion and many well-temples and sacred springs were constructed. In the centre of the site a wide window in the rock opens out onto the Lanaittu valley below. We descend to Sa Oche by a different route, taking us through a narrow gorge with lush vegetation where, if we are lucky, we could spot wild boar or a family of wild mouflon sheep.

Today's Moderate grade 9.5 kilometre/5.9 mile walk is expected to take around 4 hours with a total ascent and descent of 580 metres/1902 feet.

Meals Provided: Breakfast & Lunch

Today's walk will take us to one the most spectacular viewpoints in Sardinia, offering panoramic views over the whole of the Supramonte Mountains and beyond. The Supramonte range is characterised by its rugged karst (limestone) topography from which rivers have carved out deep canyons and ravines.

After driving to the start point of our walk near the Hotel Monte Maccione, we climb up onto the barren limestone plateau that stretches between the peaks of Monte Corrasi and Punta Sos Nidos. We ascend Monte Corrasi first; at 1463 metres/4800 feet it's the highest peak in the Supramonte. The views from here are simply astounding, reaching from Punta La Marmora (Sardinia's highest peak)) and the Gennargentu Mountains to the west to the Oddoene Valley and the Mediterranean Sea to the east. After enjoying the view, we continue at first downhill and then uphill again to the summit of Punta Sos Nidos (1348 metres/4422 feet) for a great view down into the Valley of Oliena, hundreds of metres below. The final stretch of our trek takes us back to our starting point.

Today's Challenging grade 12 kilometre/7.5 mile walk is expected to take around 7 hours with a total ascent and descent of 1000 metres/3281 feet.

Meals Provided: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today's walk is in the amazing Gorge of Gorropu, dug out by the forces of the Flumineddu River. After breakfast we drive along one of the island's most panoramic roads, to the trailhead of the path at the Genna Silana Pass at a little over 1000 metres/3281 feet. From here we walk along a steep gravel track leading slowly down to the canyon entrance, passing through the fragrant Mediterranean maquis, coloured by wildflowers and the red fruits of the strawberry trees. On arrival at the gorge, local guides will explain the nature and geology of this amazing canyon after which we set out to walk and explore this wonder of nature on our own. The further we hike into the gorge, the bigger the boulders we have to climb over and the narrower the passages we have to squeeze through, until we reach the point where the base of the gorge is only 5 metres feet wide. From here we make our way to the gorge entrance and follow an easy trail along the river to our pick-up point near a bridge over the river.

Today's Moderate grade 10.5 kilometre/6.5 mile walk is expected to take around 5 hours with a total ascent of 65 metres/213 feet and descent of 800 metres/2624 feet.

We say goodbye to the agriturismo this morning and head for the coast to experience a different side of Sardinia. En route we'll stop at Dorgali, a small agricultural town known for its crafts and ceramics. Travelling on to the coast by public bus (our luggage is transferred by private vehicle), our next 3 nights will be spent at a hotel in the seaside village of Cala Gonone on the Gulf of Orosei. This is a laid back place where life gravitates towards the long seafront promenade with a scattering of bars and restaurants and a gently shelving beach.

The rest of the day is left free. You may choose to take a break from walking to relax on the beach at Cala Gonone or nearby Cala Fuili or catch a boat further along the coast to visit various other remote and beautiful beaches and caves.

Hotel Cala Luna (or similar)

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Meals Provided: Breakfast

We catch a public bus inland this morning, to the trailhead close to Dorgali. We follow a track that connects Dorgali and Cala Gonone, passing through a short section (less than 200 metres/656 feet) of tunnel blasted through the rock. The tunnel is wide enough for a vehicle to pass through and light enough not to require torches so claustraphobia isn't an issue. The trail then ascends with great views all the way to the top of Monte Bardia (881 metres/2890 feet) from where there's a long and gradual descent to the coast. The trail is rocky and quite steep in parts.

Today's Challenging grade 11 kilometre/6.8 mile walk has a total ascent of 485metres/1591 feet and descent of 960 metres/3149 feet.

We catch a boat south to Cala Sisine this morning and enjoy fabulous coastal views of the limestone cliffs and turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Cala Sisine is an unspoilt sandy beach in a gorgeous cove from where we start our trek along a section of the renowned Selvaggio Blu trail. The Selvaggio Blu (Wild Blue) is a multi-day trek, abseiling and climbing expedition that runs for over 50 kilometres miles along a stretch of Sardinia's remote limestone east coast. But don't worry - the section from Cala Sisine to Cala Gonone that we hike involves only walking! The rocky trail undulates up and down the cliffs from Sisine to another beautiful beach, Cala Luna at 9 kilometres/5.6 miles from where there's an option to return to Cala Gonone by boat. For those wishing to continue, it's another 5.5 kilometres/3.4 miles on to the end of the trek, the beach at Cala Fuili, a 20 minute walk back to our hotel.

Today's Moderate grade 14.5 kilometre/9 mile walk is expected to take approximately 5.5 hours with a total ascent of 845metres/2772feet and descent of 910 metres/2985 feet.

Departing Cala Gonone we drive to Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB) where we will arrive about at 3.00 pm and this is where the holiday ends. The earliest time you should book a flight to depart today is 5.00 pm. (Please note the SAR 08OCT23 departure only will finish at Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB) at 9.00 am and the earliest time you should book a flight to depart today is 11.00 am.)

Tops made from wicking materials which keep you drier and warmer are recommended as a base layer, and walking trousers are preferable to trousers of heavier material such as jeans. A waterproof jacket is essential at all times in case of rain and wind. -Breathable wind and waterproof jacket (you may also wish to bring waterproof trousers) -T-shirts -Long sleeved tops -Sunhat -Warm hat -Gloves -Long trousers -Shorts (if you prefer to walk in them) -Swimwear -Midlayer Fleece/pullover -Socks (liner and thicker pair)

Nanni and Lina's farm-stay occupies a tranquil setting overlooking Lake Cedrino and with views to the mountains beyond. The small agricultural town of Dorgali is around five kilometres away. The en suite rooms are simply furnished in a rustic Sardinian style. The agriturismo's small restaurant serves up tasty cuisine including typical Sardinian dishes. SAR 15th September departure spends the first 4 nights at an alternative property Hotel il Querceto. Hotel Cala Luna is a small hotel located just a few metres from the seafront in the laid back seaside resort of Cala Gonone. En suite rooms are furnished in a contemporary style. The hotel has a small gym and sauna and mountain bikes are available for guests' use free of charge. Its restaurant specialises in local seafood.

Walking Tour in Sardinia

Sardinia coast to coast.

This 8-day, 7-night walking tour in Sardinia starts in Cagliari, the Jerusalem of Sardinia, heads east to a delightful coastal hamlet and joins the breath-taking Selvaggio Blu (Wild Blue) trail – the most challenging in the Mediterranean. Selvaggio Blu will give you a heady dose of nature, of scents and colours that will stay in your system for a long time.

Walking tour in Sardinia - coast-to-coast group photo

Our walking tour in Sardinia will follow the Selvaggio Blu walking path where no ropes are needed. Days 3, 4 and 5 will be challenging: 1 night in a Mountain Refuge, 1 night in a tent on the beach with outdoor showers, and activity level 5.

In addition to ‘standard’ walking equipment, you will need to bring: a light backpack, trekking poles, water bottle, sun hat, sunglasses, sun cream, windproof jacket (Sardinia can be very windy!), cagoule, sleeping-bag and a small towel. Wake-up time is around 7:30 am.

Walking Tours in Sardinia Summary

  • Accommodation: five nights in 4-star hotels, one night in a tent, one night in a mountain refuge
  • Activity levels: 2, 4 and 5 (see FAQ for definitions)

Arrival in Cagliari (pm)

Benvenuti in Sardegna! Our staff will meet you at Cagliari Elmas Airport and bring you to your hotel, where we’ll be waiting with an aperitif. We’ll then have a trip presentation and get-together before heading into town for dinner.

Cagliari

Dinner: Restaurant in Cagliari

Night: Palazzo Dessy in central Cagliari, in the old fishing harbour

Discovering Cagliari and heading east to Santa Maria Navarrese

An elephant on the tower? You’ll have the answer to this by the end of the tour. During a four-hour guided walk around Cagliari, and a visit to the fabulous archaeological museum, you’ll learn about the town’s structure and the mark left by successive civilizations – Roman, Pisan, Aragonese and Piedmontese.

hiking tours sardinia

High up in the town in an ancient citadel, Castello, watch flamingos take off from two large ponds. After a tour of Cagliari by Ape, the classic Italian three-wheeler, we will wander through San Benedetto, Europe’s largest covered market, to see and sample the fish, meat, cheese, wine, bread and cakes on offer. After a light lunch in the market, we set off from Cagliari in a private minibus driving through inland Sardinia to the east coast and Santa Maria Navarrese.

Dinner: Santa Maria Hotel

Night: Santa Maria Hotel

The Selvaggio Blu trail – Santa Maria Navarrese to Rifugio Golgo

Santa Maria Navarrese is a fishing village on the east coast in Ogliastra province and is where the trail begins. A guide from Cooperative Goloritzè will lead your group for the three days.

Pietra Longa - walking tour in sardinia

Your coast-to-coast walking tour in Sardinia starts here! Setting off at sunrise, you follow the gorgeous, gentle coastline up to Pietra Longa for a breath-taking view of the faraglioni rock formations and then up to the Us Pigus and Bacu Tenosili gullies. As you ascend, with the tang of the sea all around you, juniper sheepfolds will come into view. During the day, when you reach the Golgo heights, your reward is the incomparable scenery below.

Mobile phone reception is patchy, and no water is available along the trail, so remember to fill your water bottles in S. Maria Navarrese. Days 3, 4 and 5 may be changed around or modified according to sea and weather conditions.

Activity level: 5 (1 km uphill, 400 m downhill)

Walk: 18 km

Midday meal: packed lunch

Dinner: Sardinian specialities at Rifugio Golgo (Golgo mountain refuge)

Night: Rifugio Golgo in double or multi-bed rooms

Golgo to Cala Sisine

You leave the Golgo refuge to visit the Chiesa di San Pietro, standing alone on the Golgo plateau amid ancient olive trees. This modest, late 16 th century church, with its striking whitewashed façade, is flanked by cumbessias – rough, open stone structures that traditionally hosted local festivities and, before that, pilgrims.

hiking tours sardinia

You follow Via del Carbone, the road once used to transport coal, and the riverbed of Torrente Codula Sisine to the stunning Cala Sisine bay. You’ll be impressed by the gorges and on reaching Cala Sisine … you’re suddenly facing the sea. A small camping area provides hot water and a safe place to put up your tents. It looks out onto the fine white sand and water in various shades of blue, from palest aqua to dark turquoise. At the southern end, bizarrely shaped limestone formations soar away from the cliffside.

Enjoy the sea breeze as you stroll on the bay’s white sands. Take a breather and lap up the view!

Activity level: 5 (100 m uphill, 480 m downhill)

Dinner: at the night camp

Night: tents (two-person) and camping mattresses provided by the organisation, showers available at the campsite

From Cala Sisine to Cala Luna with transfer to S. Maria Navarrese by boat or jeep

From the campsite, you head for the left slope of Cala Sisine bay to climb back up to the cliff’s edge, glimpsing the sea through juniper bushes. Then Bacu Lopiro – an astonishing natural hole 20 metres in diameter  ̶  you have to take a picture! At Cala Luna (Moon Bay), there’s a beachside café, where you can relax with a drink before returning to S. Maria Navarrese by boat. The 45-minute boat trip is superb: you’ll look back at the whole coast, including the bays you walked across during your Ogliastra experience. If sea conditions do not allow transfer by boat, return by jeep or alternative means will be organised.

Santa Maria Navarrese to Cabras through the town of Ulassai

This is a transfer day (2.5 hrs) from the east coast passing through central Sardinia to the west coast. Our first stop is the Stazione dell’Arte, a converted railway station at Ulassai dedicated to the work of native artist Maria Lai, known for installations such as Sewing up the world and Capturing the wind . Maria’s works were exhibited at the 2017 Venice Biennale.

Then our walking tour in Sardinia continues westwards across central Sardinia up to Cabras in the Gulf of Oristano. The gulf is enclosed to the north by Cape San Marco, on the Sinis Peninsula, and to the south by Cape Frasca and is dotted with massive ponds, including the Stagno di Cabras and Stagno di Mistras. The Stagno di Cabras has a surface area of 2,200 hectares and has been privately owned since 1982. Today the ponds comprise some of the most important wetlands in Europe and have been declared a European Community Interest Zone. The wetlands have another quality: the special intensity of the light.

The Phoenix Path to Sinis Peninsula and Tharros

Learning about and tasting bottarga.

Sinnis Peninsula - Sardinia

We are now on the west coast and start walking again. A local guide will lead us along the Phoenix Path that follows the coast overlooking the Gulf of Oristano to your left and the Cabras Ponds on your right, traversing fish farms and ending at the Sinis Peninsula at Cape San Marco.

On the way back, we will stop at the Tower of San Giovanni. From the 50-metre vantage point you will see, to your right, the ‘live sea’, exposed to the wind, and to your left the ‘dead sea’, protected from the wind – and Tharros, a city founded by the Phoenicians in around 800 AD, on what was then a Roman site. From the tower, the guide will tell you about Tharros. Further inland, the sand dunes give way to Cabras Ponds, a swampy ecosystem among the largest and most flourishing in Europe, and home to the greater flamingo.

We return to Cabras by minibus to visit Cabras Pond at the Pontis Consortium and learn the secret to catching grey mullet and producing bottarga. Bottarga is smoked grey or red roe from mullet, tuna and even swordfish. Sardinia is where bottarga has always been produced, and Cabras is the mecca of mullet bottarga. Even though it’s becoming known in North America, the product is still by far an unknown delight. A tasting concludes the day.

Boats of the Cabras Ponds - Sardinia

Activity level: 4, almost flat

Walk: 15 km

Midday meal:   pranzo al sacco

Dinner: Mar’e e Pontis Fishery

Night: Acquae Sinis boutique hotel

Sheep-milking competition and visit to the Giants

We start our last day with a visit to the farm of Marcolino, who is a shepherd in Su Prano, a few kilometres from Cabras. Marcolino, a real cultural ambassador for this rural area, will school you in the art of sheep milking. You’ll then take part in a milking competition; the best-performing milkers will receive a medal crafted by a local artist. After all that milking, Marcolino will demonstrate how to make cheese and ricotta. And what better way to end your farm visit than with a cheese and wine tasting? The wine is a v ernaccia di Oristano , a staple in the life and customs of this area, and the whole of Sardinia.
