Cruises in the United States

Whether you want to explore the dynamic cities and rocky shores of the East Coast, taste wines in the California sunshine, bask on Florida’s golden beaches, or see Alaska’s incredible wildlife, our United States cruises will deliver your dream vacation. Immerse yourself in Boston’s historic sites and exciting culinary scene. Ride the vintage cable cars in San Francisco and explore the dazzling colors of Seattle’s Pike Place Market.

Cruises to the United States take you to the heart of these iconic cities, as well as exploring some of the country’s most beautiful coastlines, from the icy peaks and forested inlets of Alaska to the lush landscapes of New England. The list of adventures in store is endless, from hiking, cycling, and kayaking to whale-watching, designer shopping, fine dining, and a rich, diverse culture. All this is yours, from the premium setting of one of our award-winning, contemporary ships.

USA Cruise Highlights

Cosmopolitan cities.

The USA can rightly claim to have some of the most exciting cities in the world. In Boston, the Freedom Trail is a fascinating history lesson. Check out Pier 39 in San Francisco, and take a trip to Alcatraz. Discover Hemingway’s legacy in laid-back Key West, find your inner rock star in Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture, or explore the interesting mix of cultures in New Orleans.

Spectacular Nature

Wherever you sail in the USA, you’ll be captivated by the extraordinary beauty of the landscapes. Hawaii is a lush paradise of rainforest, volcanic peaks, and tumbling waterfalls, while Alaska is wild and untamed, a world of snowy mountains, glaciers, and old-growth forest. Sail the coast of New England in fall and take in the dazzling shades of scarlet and orange on the trees. Or head south to Key West for a setting of coconut palms, sandy beaches, and colorful coral reefs.

Exciting Cuisine

Whether you want to taste award-winning vintages in Napa Valley, feast on lobster rolls in New England, or sample gumbo in New Orleans, you’ll discover an incredibly varied culinary scene on your travels around the USA. Don’t miss a salmon bake or the chance to try reindeer sausages in Alaska. In San Francisco, head for Chinatown for tasty dim sum. Key West is famed for its tangy Key lime pie, while Seattle’s claim to fame is artisan-roast coffee—and those powerful Washington State wines.

United States Cruise Regions

The wild frontier of Alaska has some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in the USA, where you’ll find mile upon mile of jagged, snow-capped mountains and dense forest. On a cruise, you’ll be able to appreciate this wild beauty from both a land and sea perspective. You’ll see glaciers, rocky shorelines, historic gold rush towns, and flower-strewn mountain meadows. Along the way, you can hike, kayak, spot bears, go whale-watching, and feast on fresh salmon.

New England

New England has it all: cosmopolitan cities like Boston, arty seaside towns, windswept coasts, and verdant national parks. Follow the Freedom Trail in Boston, and explore Portland’s seafaring history under Maine’s vast skies. Time your trip for the fall and admire the fiery colors of the foliage. Everywhere you go, there’s delicious seafood to taste, like lobster rolls, or claws dripping in melted butter.

Visit some of the most exciting cities on the Pacific Coast with Celebrity. See the graceful sweep of the Golden Gate Bridge in hilly San Francisco, and ride the historic cable cars. Whizz up the Space Needle in Seattle and take in the colors and buzz of Pike Place Market. In Los Angeles, browse the designer shops on Rodeo Drive and marvel at the stars’ homes. Catalina Island, meanwhile, is another world of rugged coastlines, diverse marine life, and hiking trails with sweeping views.

Indulge in a relaxing journey across the warm Pacific from Vancouver to the lush, volcanic islands of Hawaii, where waterfalls tumble from verdant peaks and the ocean is home to abundant whales and dolphins. Visit Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls from Hilo, and admire the fiery antics of Mount Kilauea. Learn about history in Honolulu, the location of the only royal palace in the USA, and Pearl Harbor.

Admire the colorful Art Deco architecture of Miami’s South Beach, and taste Cuban cuisine in Little Havana. Browse the shops along Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, and explore the canals by gondola. Walk along the famous Duval Street in Key West and explore Hemingway’s former haunts. Treat your kids to a day in the theme parks around Orlando—and meet astronauts at the Kennedy Space Center. Make time to visit those glorious beaches, too.

USA Cruise Itineraries

Celebrity Cruises offers a vast range of USA cruise itineraries and departure ports. Sail from Boston, or Cape Liberty in New Jersey. In Florida, choose between Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Orlando (Port Canaveral), and Miami. West Coast ports include Los Angeles, Seattle, and Seward. Cruises range from short getaways to Key West to 13-night voyages from Vancouver, Canada to Honolulu.

Itineraries

Why cruise to the usa with celebrity cruises.

There’s no more comfortable way to explore the exciting coastlines of the USA than with Celebrity Cruises. You’ll dock in the heart of some of the country’s most iconic cities and sail along exquisite coastlines, visiting multiple destinations and only having to unpack once.

As you sail, you’ll discover all the wonderful amenities that make a vacation on board our award-winning ships such an experience. Live life at your own pace, whether you want a workout in the Fitness Center or a private cabana by the pool. Unwind in the spa, take in the views from the Magic Carpet on Edge-series ships, or relax on the fragrant grass at the Lawn Club on Solstice-series ships. Savor world-class cuisine every day. Elevate your experience in The Retreat, where you’ll enjoy beautiful suite accommodation, an exclusive lounge, and the culinary delights of Luminae at The Retreat.

This Trip Will Be the Longest River Cruise in the U.S. — Visiting 20 States in 60 Days

American Cruise Lines just announced the country’s longest-ever river cruise, departing in August 2024.

Paul Brady is the news director at Travel + Leisure and the brand's expert on cruise travel. He has been covering the travel industry for more than 15 years for outlets including Condé Nast Traveler , Skift , and The Huffington Post .

American Cruise Lines just unveiled its most ambitious itinerary ever, a 61-day extravaganza that will visit 20 states and navigate four of the country’s most notable rivers.

The new trip, called The Great United States , will depart from Portland, Oregon, in August 2024 and cross the country from west to east. Along the way, guests will see national parks, Civil War sites, rural corners, bustling cities, and countless unexpected delights. The two-month journey sails on the Columbia and Snake Rivers exploring the American West; the Mississippi River, covering 1,400 miles from New Orleans to St. Paul, Minnesota; and the coast of New England. Along the way, guests will also see Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming by land and take a few connecting flights between ports. The journey ends in New York City, with a sail past the Statue of Liberty.

“The Great United States cruise is a fantastic showcase of our country and of the breadth of American Cruise Lines,” says Charles B. Robertson, the line’s president and CEO, in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure . “A river cruise of this magnitude has never been done before in the U.S., and only American Cruise Lines is capable of delivering it successfully,” he adds.

The incredible trip will involve three of the brand’s 18 ships : American Independence, American Jazz , and American Symphony . Operating in the Pacific Northwest, the Jazz has just 99 staterooms, all with private balconies. For the Mississippi portion of the trip, guests will board American Symphony , a 180-passenger vessel that launched in 2022. The 51-cabin American Independence will take guests from Maine through New England, before navigating New York’s Hudson River during the October portion of the itinerary.

“We are the only cruise line to operate an entirely American built and registered fleet of ships, and we are the only line operating in all of the geographies included on this itinerary,” Robertson tells T+L. “The new cruise is a fantastic exploration of America, and it is only possible with the fleet we have built.”

Fares for the two-month adventure start at $51,060 per person, an all-inclusive rate that covers meals, drinks, activities, and entertainment, as well as Wi-Fi, connecting flights, hotel stays along the way, crew tips, and port charges.

While this is the longest trip American Cruise Lines has ever coordinated, one source at the line says it may be the first of many to come. “These long cruises are super popular,” the source tells T+L. “We have plans to add more.”

American Cruise Lines Unveils Its Longest U.S. River Cruise — The Four Rivers You’ll Explore In 60 Days

american cruise and travel

  • News and Tips
  • Travel News

American Cruise Lines has announced its longest cruise in the company’s history, a 60-day trip that touches 20 states, major rivers, and both coasts.

The Great United States tour covers all four time zones and includes a pair of flights transporting passengers to different segments of the trip.

The cruise launches August 14, 2024, in Portland, Oregon, and finishes October 14, 2024, in New York Harbor with a viewing of the Statue of Liberty.

“The Great United States cruise is a fantastic showcase of our country and of the breadth of American Cruise Lines,” Charles B. Robertson, president and CEO of American Cruise Lines, said in a release . “A river cruise of this magnitude has never been done before in the U.S., and only American Cruise Lines is capable of delivering it successfully.”

The first 2 weeks are spent on the West Coast, starting in Portland, Oregon, at the mouth of the Pacific Ocean. Aboard the American Jazz, travelers will head east along the Columbia and Snake Rivers for 8 days.

Days 9–14 are spent on land with a national parks segment as guests visit the spectacular Yellowstone, Glacier, and Grand Teton National Parks, finishing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

From there, guests will take a flight to New Orleans for the next segment, a Mississippi River cruise northbound and beyond.

Guests will spend 23 days exploring the river from New Orleans to St. Paul, Minnesota, aboard the American Symphony .

At that point, guests will fly to Portland, Maine, where they will board the American Independence and explore the Atlantic Coast from Maine to Boston for 8 days.

The next 6 days will take guests to some of the nation’s most famous seaports between Boston and New York, followed by six more days on the Hudson River. The trip then returns to Manhattan and New York Harbor.

Guests are finally invited to return home or extend their trip in the Big Apple to see the sights and sounds of New York City.

Big Adventure Promised

American Cruise Lines promises exhilarating trips.

“The Great United States cruises will enable guests to discover the extraordinary beauty of America, from its breathtaking national parks and mountain ranges to its golden Midwest farmlands and salty New England harbors,” the company explains. “Always sailing in sight of land and visiting only domestic U.S. ports of call, American’s guests will retrace the steps of Lewis and Clark on the Columbia and Snake Rivers, roll along the Mighty Mississippi with Mark Twain and Elvis, venture up the Hudson River during peak fall foliage season, and breathe in the fresh sea air of coastal New England.”

Cost for the trip isn’t cheap, with tickets ranging from $51,060 to $77,945 per person, depending on the type of stateroom selected. A $5,000 deposit will be required at the time of the reservation.

Fort Lauderdale

american cruise and travel

Ft Lauderdale is a city of islands held together by an intricate web of canals, rivers, bays and waterways hundreds of miles long. Needless to say, boating is a favorite city pastime, whether zooming along on a speedboat, enjoying a fishing charter, or cruising the coastline by yacht. Beautiful homes of every size and style make up the bulk of this primarily residential area. By the beach, a leisurly stroll can be taken along the new landscaping wavewall design of the beachfront promenade. But this city is anything but sedate. Once a spring break hot spot, the town still has an energetic and colorful nightlife. Nearby, charming Laudrdale-By-the-Sea is home to one of the only living coral reefs in the US accesible from shore. Las Olas Boulevard, a shoppers paradise, is the chic new shopping and trendy dining area of downtown. If sports are more your inclination, dozens of golf courses and hundreds of public parks allow you to absorb the great Florida outdoors. Cultural arts are also popular. Water taxis bring theater-goers from throughout the city to the Performing Arts Center on the water.

Cruz Bay, St. John ... here's where the ferry coming from St. Thomas drops you off. There are taxis and car rentals all within walking distance. Within Cruz Bay you will find a US Post Office, two banks, the Elaine Sprauve Library & Museum, and the new National Park Visitor Center. If you are hungry or thirsty when you arrive, there is a large assortment of restaurants and bars to choose from. And don't forget to pick up an island souvenir from one of the many colorful local giftshops and boutiques!

Port Spain/Trinidad-Tobago

american cruise and travel

Port-of-Spain is still one of the most active commercial cities in the Caribbean. The cultural scene is as vital as ever, especially during the country's riotous Carnival -- a period of festivities, concerts, and shows that begins after Christmas and culminates in a two-day street parade that ends on Ash Wednesday. The capital is home to around 300,000 of Trinidad's 1.3 million residents -- Africans, Indians, Americans, Europeans, and Asians, each culture with its own language and customs. About a quarter of the population is Hindu, which is why there's an abundance of East Indian festivals, religious celebrations, and delicious East Indian food.

St. George's/Grenada

american cruise and travel

Saint George's or Saint George, town (1991 pop. 4,439), capital of Grenada, in the West Indies. A port town on a deep and beautiful harbor, it is the administrative headquarters of the country and a growing tourist center. Chief exports are cacao, nutmeg, and mace. St. George's was the capital of the former British colony of the Windward Islands.

Roseau, formerly Charlotte Town, town in southwestern Dominica, capital of the island nation, in the West Indies. It is situated at the mouth of the Roseau River in the Caribbean Sea. The town is a port and serves as Dominica's main commercial and transportation center. Tourism is also important to the community's economy. A Roman Catholic cathedral built in the 18th century and botanical gardens are here, and the twin waterfalls at Trafalgar, a popular tourist attraction, are nearby.

Castries is the capital and largest city of Saint Lucia, an island country in the Caribbean. The quarter with the same name had a population of 70,000 on 22 May 2013 and stretches over an area of 80 km2 .Castries is in a flood gut and is built on reclaimed land. It houses the seat of government and the head offices of many of foreign and local businesses. The city's design is in a grid pattern. Its sheltered harbour receives cargo vessels, ferry boats, and cruise ships. It houses duty-free shopping facilities such as Point Seraphine and La Place Carenage. Many restaurants offer menus from local to Chinese. Supermarkets and other shopping facilities provide goods. The city is well served by a bus system and taxi service.

Philipsburg

american cruise and travel

Philipsburg is the capital of St. Maarten, the Dutch side of the Caribbean island St. Maarten. Beachfront bars line the boardwalk along Great Bay. Voorstraat, or Front Street, has duty-free shops and casinos. The St. Maarten Zoo is home to parrots, monkeys and a playground. St. Maarten Museum displays artifacts from the indigenous Arawak people. The ruins of 17th-century Fort Amsterdam stand on a nearby peninsula.

St. John's/Antigua

american cruise and travel

Saint John's is the capital of the island nation of Antigua and Barbuda. Located in northwestern Antigua, this is a cove of the Caribbean Sea, a major exporter of sugar, rum, cotton, handicrafts, fiber-made items, ceramics and fabrics. The city is also a tourist destination. St. John's skyline, capital and major city in Antigua and Barbuda, is mastered by the baroque magnificence of the St. John's Cathedral's dome and steeple. These steeples are Antigua's first sight for almost half of all foreign travelers who visit the island nation every year, since they come by boat. There are several sightseeing places in St. John's. This is one of the Caribbean's oldest trade ports, built in the late 17th Century. Other interesting spots are the Old Court House, built in 1747, the ruins of Fort James, harking back to 1703, The Antigua and Barbuda Museum, Marine and Living Arts Museum, Redcliffe Quay, plus several other castles and fortresses built centuries ago for the defense of this strategic enclave. The completion of different hotels and resorts to attend to all cruise liners and other vessels docking in has made St. John's a top-rated hub of shopping malls and good-cuisine restaurants. This is a city throbbing with life, a place where you can spend the day at any of its beautiful beaches and enjoy a bustling nightlife later on.

ACL American Constellation Itineraries

Acl american constellation review, review of acl american constellation.

The 2017-built MS American Constellation cruise ship is the first of American Cruise Lines fleet's "Coastal Class" boats - with sistership American Constitution (2018).

This "ocean ship" design was later modified for inland/river cruising, resulting in the company's "Modern Riverboat" fleet - American Song (2018), American Harmony (2019), American Jazz (2020), American Melody (2021), American Symphony (2022), American Serenade (2022).

History - construction and ownership

The shipowner American Cruise Lines (ACL) is the USA's largest river cruise company (headquarters in Guilford Connecticut) operational since 1991. The company specializes in cruise shipping on the USA's largest navigable inland waterways (rivers and lakes) as well as in cruises along the US East Coast, US West Coast and Florida. All ACL vessels feature some of the industry's largest passenger cabins with private balconies, spacious lounges and outdoor deck spaces, gourmet cuisine, top-quality enrichment program with many complimentary land tours and excursions, highly-personalized service by all-American staff and crew.

All ACL cruise ships are US-flagged and built by the company-owned Chesapeake Shipbuilding Yard in Salisbury (Maryland USA).

American Constellation cruise ship (ACL)

The new coastal riverboat set sail in April 2017. The "American Constellation" name was inspired by the numerous American ships named "Constellation" which have honored the United States. The original US Naval sailing frigate of 1797, USS Constellation, and the newest ship of American Cruise Lines were both constructed at Maryland shipyards. American Constellation left for her first cruise from Constellation Pier, next to where the retired USS Constellation is currently docked.

Decks and Cabins

ACCL's American Constellation ship has 6 passenger decks (accessible via one elevator) and a total of 90 staterooms . The number of cabin categories is 9. Most of the accommodations are Balcony rooms, with floor-ceiling sliding doors leading to a private step-out veranda. There are no connecting rooms onboard.

The smallest cabins (including the studios / single-occupancy cabins) sizes start at 250 ft2 (23 m2). Other staterooms range between 305-330 ft2 (28-31 m2). Veranda Suites are 405 ft2 (38 m2). Owner's Suites are 445 ft2 (41 m2). The boat's largest staterooms are the two Grand Suites located aft on deck 3. Each measures 900 ft2 (84 m2) and features 2 walls of floor-ceiling windows, sliding doors (opening to a wrap-around balcony), separate bedroom/lounge area, marble bathroom (double-sink vanity),

Shipboard facilities and amenities

The American Constellation has a single-capacity, open-seating dining room. This is the main restaurant onboard featuring floor-ceiling windows, crystal chandeliers, classy furniture, 4- and 8-seat tables and luxury dining amenities. Most of the cuisine is American fare. The menu boasts itinerary-inspired gourmet specialities and fresh food. Breakfast is buffet-style, with made-to-order items. Lunch offers soup, choice of 3 dishes, chef’s salad. Dinner offers soup, salad and 3 entrees. The wine list has a selection of domestic wines. Any dietary needs are catered for.

American Cruise Lines new ship design

The ocean capable American Constellation ship with full active wing stabilization, features capacity for 163 guests. Well-appointed rooms are the largest ever seen in service, with room service and tastefully furnished private balconies. Additional features include kayaks and Zodiacs that offer guests alternative ways to explore historic American destinations.

The list of the ship's main public venues includes:

The ship has a modern propulsion system consisting of 2x azimuth thrusters ("Z-drives") manufactured by Veth (Holland). These 360-degree rotating propellers (1x forward, 1x aft) provide the boat with greater manoeuvrability and berthing flexibility.

The ship is powered by 2x Caterpillar marine engines running on low-sulfur diesel. These modern engines require less fuel and produce fewer emissions (COx, NOx, SOx) and soot particles in comparison to other boats on the US river cruising market.

The ACL's ship's namesake is the 2002-built cruise liner Celebrity Constellation .

What are the Fjords of Norway?

A fjord is a unique, long, narrow, deep inlet of the sea between high cliffs typically formed by submergence of a glaciated valley. Characterized by steep, rock-bound inlets, craggy mountain ranges, and often dramatic waterfalls, fjords are renowned for their breathtaking beauty and are significant geographical features of the regions they inhabit. Norway is home to several world-renowned fjords, making it a unique place to visit to experience an amazing feat of nature.

What makes the Norwegian Fjords special?

The Norwegian fjords are characterized by their dramatic and untouched landscapes. Towering cliffs, snow-capped peaks, cascading waterfalls, and lush greenery create a visually stunning environment. The fjords also have a unique ecosystem with a diverse range of marine life, including various species of fish, seals, and occasionally whales.

The fjords have also played a significant role in shaping Norway's history and culture. They were vital in Viking navigation and trade routes, and many communities and farms in Norway are still nestled along fjord coastlines. The fjords are not just natural wonders, but also living landscapes where people have been shaping the land for thousands of years. Today, they are popular tourist destinations, offering activities such as hiking, fishing, kayaking, and cruising, making the Norwegian fjords a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and adventure. Holland America Line offers several cruises and excursions to experience the Norwegian fjords in all their glory.

Must-Visit Fjords in Norway

If you’re headed to Norway, visiting a fjord (or two, or three) is a must. Norway is home to some of the world's longest and deepest fjords so make sure to do your research and plan your itinerary accordingly to include some of these one-of-a-kind fjords.

Over 200 kilometers inland, reaching depths of up to 1,300 meters, Sognefjord is Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, earning it the nickname “King of the Fjords”. Explore by boat, by train, on foot,  or by car stopping by fjord villages like Vikøyri, Solvorn, Sogndal, Høyanger, Balestrand, Lærdalsøyri, and Årdal to experience what life is like in the Norwegian countryside. Mountains, glaciers, local villages, waterfalls and more are all part of the journey through this UNESCO World Heritage site. For the most picturesque views in all of Norway, visit Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord, two of the most well-known sections of the Sognefjord.

Sognefjord also holds a certification for Sustainable Destination which means it has made a commitment to maintain sustainable tourism practices. Whether you’re interested in excursions or just want to enjoy the views, a Holland America Line Norway cruise is the perfect way to experience the Sognefjord.

Geirangerfjord

Hailed as the “world’s most beautiful fjord”, Geirangerfjord is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site for a reason. Located in the Stranda Municipality, Geiranger is a quaint village nestled at the head of the inlet. The Geirangerfjord has a depth of almost 500 meters (1,640 feet). Known for its waterfalls like the Seven Sisters Falls, the Suitor, and the Bridal Veil, the Geriangerfjord has plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.

Located in the Ryfylke area in Southwestern Norway, Lysefjord is most well-known for the Preikestolen (The Pulpit Rock) cliff overlooking the fjord. Many tourists embark on the 8-kilometer hike to reach the cliff and experience majestic views of the fjord. Mount Kjerag is the highest peak on the fjord and is home to the world-famous Kjeragbolten bolder, a large rock wedged in between too cliffs that offers once-in-a-lifetime photos ops.

Hardangerfjord

As the second longest fjord in Norway, Hardangerfjord has a lot to offer including a selection of world-class hikes. Experienced hikers come from all over the world to experience the magnificent views at the top of Trolltunga, 1,100 meters above sea level. Don’t forget to visit the Eidfjord to see the Vøringfossen waterfall, one of the grandest attractions in the Hardanger region.

Want to experience the fjords of Norway in person? Holland America Line Norwegian cruises can take you there. From kayaking to ferry tours to world-class hikes and day trips to local villages, check out all our excursions to find an experience that fits your interests.

Nearly 100 Holland America cruise passengers become ill in norovirus outbreak

Portrait of Nathan Diller

Nearly 100 Holland America Line passengers got sick in a norovirus outbreak.

Among 2,522 guests on the cruise line’s Koningsdam ship, 98 reported being ill, along with 12 crew members, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . Their main symptoms were diarrhea and vomiting.

Koningsdam is currently sailing a round-trip cruise visiting Hawaii and French Polynesia that departed from San Diego on Feb. 17, according to CruiseMapper . Holland America and the ship’s crew increased cleaning and disinfection and isolated sick passengers and crew following the outbreak, among other steps, the CDC said.

“At Holland America Line, the safety and well-being of our guests and crew is our top priority. During the current voyage, a number of guests on Koningsdam reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness,” a spokesperson for the line told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. “The cases were mostly mild and quickly resolving. We initiated enhanced sanitation protocols to minimize further transmission and the incidence of cases has since declined significantly.”

The news comes after more than 125 Cunard Line passengers got sick in a gastrointestinal illness outbreak earlier this year. Norovirus cases have also risen in the U.S. in recent weeks.

The CDC logged 14 cruise ship outbreaks that met its threshold for public notification in 2023, more than any year between 2017 and 2019. Norovirus was listed as the causative agent in all but one.

The virus is frequently associated with cruises, but Ben Lopman, a professor of epidemiology at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health, told USA TODAY last year that cruises make up a "tiny minority of norovirus outbreaks.” The majority take place in health care settings such as nursing homes.
