Music enthusiasts go backstage to learn from industry leaders

Addy Loftin knew she wanted to be a manager for a tour, but after a recent trip behind the scenes of country music star Walker Hayes’ concert, she was re-inspired to achieve that goal.

Hayes stopped at Iron City in Birmingham, Alabama, where University of Alabama Country Music Association Education (CMA EDU) members were able to speak with Hayes’ management team to see firsthand what it is like working on a tour.

Hayes is currently on his 30-stop North American tour. The country music singer rose to popularity with his 2017 song, “You Broke Up With Me,” from the album Boom.

Ansley Neeley, president of The University of Alabama’s chapter of CMA EDU and a senior public relations major, was able to make this event happen for the organization through connections she made from a past internship experience.

“We were able to get a firsthand look at part of Walker Hayes’ soundcheck, tour the venue’s backstage area and learn about what it takes to become a member of an artist’s team,” Neeley said.

Students also had the opportunity to meet with Hayes’ tour manager Brian Hillman and manager Marissa Turk. Hillman and Turk gave tips on how to become successful and make the most of opportunities given in the music and entertainment industry.

The speakers gave out free tickets and meet-and-greet passes for members at the end of the venue tour for the concert later in the day.

One student who wants to work in show photography was approved for a photo pass to cover the event.

Not only were students given perks for attending the event, they were also given tips for networking and the best ways to establish a career in the music and entertainment industry.

CMA EDU is a brand extension of the Country Music Association based in Nashville, Tennessee. Due to this connection, the UA branch of CMA EDU is able to have experiences like this one, as well as being able to work on promotional campaigns, attend award shows and hear from well-known members of the music industry.

“The music industry is extremely relationship-based, and most professionals are more than willing to help out aspiring, young professionals in any way they can,” Neeley said.

The organization is very helpful to students who aspire to be in the music industry.

“Through CMA EDU, I’ve learned about opportunities and career paths that I didn’t even know existed,” said Maddie Hirschfield, a senior communication studies major. “I’ve learned what the music industry is really all about and what it takes to get there and make it. CMA EDU is important to me because without this organization, I wouldn’t have been able to find a way to make my passions into a career.”

The experience also helped some with their goals for the future.

“Being a tour manager is my dream job, so that was really helpful for me to hear tips,” said Addy Loftin, a sophomore public relations major.

Loftin said she was inspired by Hayes’ manager and her accomplishments in the industry.

“Marissa [Turk] really inspires me because she graduated from UA with a public relations degree like me, and she worked her way up to become an artist manager,” Loftin said. “The fact that she is a woman inspires me and shows me that one day, I can do something like that.”

What is a Tour Manager and what do they do?

As long as artists continue recording and releasing their music, there will always be live music performance and touring - locally, domestically, and internationally.

And with touring comes the need for one of the most important jobs in the live music industry - tour management.

This article will help you clarify who a tour manager is and what they do on a daily basis.

What is a Tour Manager?

Our definition of a tour manager is:

A non gender specific person who travels city to city with an artist, author, speaker, crew, or other VIP to manage their travel, income, expenses, touring personnel, media interactions, and to help facilitate anything else necessary to execute each show or event. (For the sake of this article, we’ll assume the tour manager is working with a musical artist to execute a live show)

At the most basic level, a tour manager is simply the person who handles or oversees almost every aspect of the lives and routines of musicians and bands while they are on tour. In other words, a tour manager ‘runs the show’ while the band is on the road.

Tour managers travel with the artist to ensure that the tour operates smoothly and punctually without unnecessary hiccups and problems. Tour managers typically work as independent contractors offering their services to different artists each year, but some have been known to stick with only one artist for the entirety of their career.

What are the Specific Jobs of a Tour Manager?

The tour manager handles both administrative and organizational duties, and to make sure everyone is satisfied, may even take care of the personal issues of other crew members or artists on tour.

The job of a tour manager can involve event coordination, accounting, travel and logistics coordination, operations, merchandise sales and ticketing settlement, human resources, and sometimes tour managers can even take on the role of a personal assistant. To be a good tour manager, one needs to be detail oriented, but also able to see the full vision of what the artist is trying to create.

Because a lot of the characteristics of tour manager transfer over to artist management, there are cases where the tour manager also doubles as the band manager. Often on smaller tours, the tour manager may be acting in a double role as not only a tour manager, but also a sound engineer, a driver, a merchandise manager, or other crew position.

Some specific responsibilities of a tour manager may include:

Creating a tour budget

Advancing and preparing all the details for each show

Securing and managing of all income and expenses during the tour

Overseeing other production elements like lighting, sound, publicity, and even selling of merchandise during the tour

Booking and coordinating all ground transportation, flights, hotels

Overseeing or directly handling the transportation of all VIPs and crew

Creating a security plan for each venue and public appearance

Working closely with publicists, show promoters, venue managers, ticketing agencies, etc.

Ability to solve extreme problems. Like unexpected issues that may arise during touring - (medical, security, travel, contractual)

Leading a team of varying size to execute each event

On larger or longer tours, the duties above may be shared between two or more people.

Completely outlining the specific duties of a tour manager can be near impossible as there are countless scenarios on the road that beg the tour manager's attention.

Ultimately, the job of the tour manager is to make sure that everyone, including the artist, is okay and happy while on the road. Tour management can be both fun and stressful, but can also be very rewarding as it is crucial to the success of an artist’s touring career.

Originally from Montana, Tony Bean’s first experience with aviation was flying for the first time to attend Marine Corps Boot Camp in San Diego CA. Tony was assigned to an aviation specialty and served as a Ground Support Equipment Technician. In 1999 he moved into a new job as a Cryogenics Equipment Technician working with oxygen and nitrogen equipment for servicing various aircraft pneumatic and aviators breathing oxygen systems, leaving the service as a sergeant and instructor at Cherry Point, North Carolina in 2003.

Tony started his BS degree in Aviation Management with a focus on operating airports while still in the service. He interned at commercial service level airports in Jacksonville, North Carolina and Helena, Montana. Tony accepted a Lead Security Officer position with TSA from 2004-2006.

The public relations experience gained in this position served him well as he accepted the Manager position for the Yellowstone Airport with the State of Montana, Aeronautics Division from 2006 to 2011. Tony was able to increase enplanement numbers, revenue possibilities, and guide the airport through the new FAR Part 139 requirements. He successfully wrote and implemented a 2008 Small Community Airport Development grant to enhance awareness of the airport.

Tony assumed his current position in 2011 as the Executive Director of the Pullman Moscow Regional Airport. Traffic demand and increasingly larger aircraft are driving major changes. Tony is leading the airport though a $66 million runway realignment project currently in the Environmental process and due to be completed in 2018.

Tony is married to Tracie, they have 3 children. He holds a BS in Aviation Management from Southern Illinois University and is pursuing an MBA at the University of Idaho. Tony is also a Certified Member of the American Association of Airport Executives.

Tony was named to Airport Business’ 2013 “ Top 40 Under 40″  list!
