How to clear browsing history on Safari on iPhone or Mac

As tracking goes, Safari keeping your browsing history is less about privacy-busting security and more about just being useful. It's your history that means Safari remembers where to go to when you choose forward and back within a site, for instance.

It's also how Safari is able to offer you a list of sites that you regularly go to, on account of how handy it is to be able to back to them with a click. History also does keep things you may not expect, though, such as a list of items you've downloaded.

If you don't want that, though, or you're just fed up of Safari going to site addresses you haven't looked at in years, you can wipe the whole browsing history.

On a Mac, you can also wipe, for instance, just the last hour's browsing history. So if you share Safari and it's someone's special birthday coming up, you can avoid them inadvertently finding out you plan to surprise them with dance lessons.

Go to History, Clear History, and then choose how far back you want your browsing cleared

How to clear search history on Safari on Mac

  • In Safari, choose the History menu
  • Select Clear History from the very bottom of the menu
  • In the dialog box that appears, choose from clearing the last hour , today , today and yesterday , or all history
  • Click on Clear History

Alternatively, within Safari you can press Command-Y and the current page will be replaced by a history list. There's a Clear History... button toward the top right.

Clicking on that gives you exactly the same dialog about choosing how far back you want to clear your browsing history. But this page does also give you one extra option — the ability to delete one specific item.

How to clear one item from Safari search history on Mac

  • In Safari, press Command-Y
  • From the long list, click once on a history item to select it
  • Right-click to bring up a menu, then choose Delete

Alternatively, if you select one, two, or more items in the history list, you can then press the Delete key to remove them all.

You can remove your takeaway habits from Safari, we're not judging you.

That kind of precision removal is only possible on your Mac, not on iOS . However, whether it's precision or wholesale clearing of your history, though, there is a way to replicate it on iOS.

If you have set iCloud to share your Safari history, then just doing this on your Mac also removes the history from your iPhone, and iPad.

Otherwise, you're stuck with going to your iOS device. And then with clearing the entire history.

How to clear search history on iPhone

  • Go to Settings on your iOS device
  • Tap on Safari
  • Scroll down to Clear History and Website Data
  • Tap that, then tap Clear History and Data to confirm

One important thing to note is that you can't selectively remove, say, today's browsing history on the iPhone or iPad . It's all or nothing, with iOS.

Clearing your Safari history is all or nothing on iOS

What you leave behind

Clearing your history like this does remove the list of sites and pages you've visited. It does mean you can't go back to that site you read last Tuesday, not without remembering what it was and going there yourself.

What it doesn't remove, though, is the information that gets used by something like AutoFill. If you have your address, for instance, and you're used to online forms being filled out with it, you've still got that feature.

You've also still got anything you downloaded. It's purely that Safari won't keep the list of downloads.

How to See the Safari History on an iPhone: A Step-by-Step Guide

Seeing the Safari history on an iPhone is a straightforward process. Just open the Safari app, tap the book icon at the bottom of the screen, and then tap the clock icon to view your browsing history. You’ll be able to see a list of all the websites you’ve visited, sorted by date.

After completing this action, you’ll have access to the list of websites you’ve visited using Safari on your iPhone. This can be useful for finding a site you forgot to bookmark, checking what sites were visited on a particular day, or clearing your history for privacy reasons.

Introduction

Browsing the internet on your iPhone is a daily activity for many of us, but how often do we think about our digital footprints? Whether you’re a privacy-conscious individual, a parent wanting to check what your kids have been up to online, or simply trying to find that one website you stumbled upon a few days ago, knowing how to view your Safari history is essential.

Safari, the default browser on all Apple devices, keeps track of all the websites you visit, allowing you to revisit a site whenever you need to. However, not everyone knows how to access this history. This article is for iPhone users of all ages and skill levels who want to learn how to see their Safari history. It’s an important skill that can help you in a variety of situations. Plus, it’s super easy to do!

How to See the Safari History on an iPhone

The following steps will guide you through the process of viewing your Safari history on an iPhone.

Tap the clock icon to view your browsing history. The clock icon is typically at the top of the list, and tapping it will display all the sites you’ve visited, organized by date.

Additional Information

When browsing through your Safari history, you can tap on any entry to revisit that webpage immediately. Plus, if you’re looking to delete certain parts of your history, you can do that too! author

“Is it possible to recover deleted Safari history on iPhone? I want to retrieve deleted history from around 3 months earlier.”

Safari is the default browser for iOS devices and Mac computers, which is widely used among Apple users. While searching the internet with Safari, it usually keeps the browsing history and bookmarks for picking up what has been read.

What if you have accidentally deleted your browsing history, or it is suddenly gone without a record? Don't worry. You still have a chance to get back the deleted Safari history. Keep reading to find out how to recover deleted Safari history on iPhone with or without backup.

Can Safari History Be Recovered Once It Is Deleted?

Yes, you can recover deleted browsing history from Safari, but it's not guaranteed. When you clear your browsing history in Safari, it's not permanently erased from your iPhone or iPad. Instead, it's temporarily stored in a different part of your device's memory for a limited period. This storage period typically lasts around one month for iPhone/iPad and up to one year for Mac. If you act quickly, you sitll have a good chance to recover deleted Safari history.

Check iPhone Settings for Deleted Safari History

Before you try any other methods listed below, first check your iPhone itself. The simplest way of recovering your browsing history is to find them in Safari Website Data under Settings. Here's how to do it:

  • On your iPhone, open the Settings app. Scroll down to find Safari and tap on it.
  • On the next screen, scroll to the bottom and tap on the Advanced option.

Can’t Clear My Safari Web Browser History: Troubleshooting Steps

Michael Kay

August 16, 2024

Safari Web Browser

If you’re using Safari on an Apple device, you may encounter difficulties clearing your browsing history. This could be due to device restrictions or a temporary software issue. It’s crucial to clear your history, cookies, and cache to safeguard your privacy and maintain your browsing habits private. To address this problem, start by attempting to clear your history through Safari’s settings.

If this doesn’t resolve the issue, you may need to delve deeper into the system settings. Understanding how Safari stores data and the available privacy options is important. If clearing your history directly in Safari is unsuccessful, you can try resetting network settings or clearing data from your iPhone or iPad settings.

How to clear Safari History

Resolving Issues Clearing Safari History

Having trouble clearing your Safari web browser history? Don’t worry, there are a few things you can try to fix this issue.

Check for Content & Privacy Restrictions

If you’re unable to clear your Safari history, content & privacy restrictions might be the culprit. This feature, often used for parental controls, can prevent history clearing. To check:

  • Go to “Settings” on your iPhone.
  • Tap on “Screen Time” and then “Content & Privacy Restrictions.”
  • If enabled, enter your Screen Time passcode.
  • Disable “Content & Privacy Restrictions” or adjust settings to allow history clearing.

Clear History and Website Data

  • Go to “Settings” > “Safari” > “Clear History and Website Data”.
  • Tap “Clear History and Data” to confirm.

Restart Safari

  • Double-press the Home button (or swipe up from the bottom of the screen if you have a newer iPad without a Home button) to view the app switcher.
  • Swipe up on the Safari app preview to close it.
  • Reopen Safari and try clearing the history again.

Restart Your Device

  • Press and hold the power button until the “slide to power off” slider appears.
  • Slide the slider to power off your device.
  • Wait a few seconds, then press and hold the power button again until the Apple logo appears.

Check iCloud Settings

  • Go to “Settings” > [Your Name] > “iCloud”.
  • Make sure “Safari” is turned on. If it’s off, turn it on and wait for your data to sync.
  • If “Safari” is already on, try turning it off and then back on again.

Reset Network Settings

  • Go to “Settings” > “General” > “Reset” > “Reset Network Settings”.
  • Enter your passcode if prompted.
  • This will reset your Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, VPN and APN settings.

Reset All Settings

( Caution: This will reset all your settings, including Wi-Fi passwords and display settings. Back up your device before proceeding. )

  • Go to “Settings” > “General” > “Reset” > “Reset All Settings”.

Turn Off Screen Time

If the above method fails, try turning off Screen Time completely:

  • Go to “Settings.”
  • Tap on “Screen Time.”
  • Scroll down and tap “Turn Off Screen Time.”
  • Enter your Screen Time passcode.

After turning it off, try clearing your Safari history. Remember to turn Screen Time back on if you need its features.

Other Troubleshooting Tips

  • Restart your iPhone: A simple restart can sometimes resolve glitches causing the issue.
  • Check for updates: Ensure your iPhone is running the latest iOS version, as updates often fix bugs.
  • Clear website data: In Safari settings, try clearing website data instead of history. This might remove any data preventing history clearing.

If the Problem Persists

If you’ve tried the above steps and still can’t clear your Safari history, here are additional options:

  • Reset Settings: Go to “Settings” > “General” > “Transfer or Reset iPhone” > “Reset.” Choose “Reset All Settings” and follow the instructions. This won’t erase your data, but you’ll need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords and other preferences.
  • Contact Apple Support: If none of the solutions work, reach out to Apple Support for further assistance. They can help diagnose and resolve the issue.

If None of the Above Works:

  • Contact Apple Support: If you’ve tried all the troubleshooting steps and you’re still unable to clear your Safari history, it’s time to contact Apple Support for further assistance.

Additional Tips:

  • Private Browsing: If you don’t want to save your browsing history, you can use Private Browsing mode in Safari.
  • Regularly Clear Your History: It’s a good practice to clear your browsing history regularly to protect your privacy and free up storage space on your device.

Remember: Clearing your history will also delete cookies and other website data, so you may need to log in to websites again after clearing your history.

Key Takeaways

  • Users sometimes cannot clear Safari history due to restrictions or glitches.
  • Maintaining privacy involves clearing history, cookies, and cache from Safari.
  • Troubleshooting may require system settings adjustments beyond Safari’s options.

Understanding Safari History and Privacy

This section provides insights into how Safari handles your browsing history and the impact on your privacy. It also explains what happens when you clear this data from your browser.

The Role of Browsing History in Safari

Safari keeps a record of the websites you visit. This browsing history helps the browser quickly access sites you’ve been to before. Apple aims to make your web experience fast and convenient with this function.

Privacy Implications of Website Data

Website data includes cookies and caches that store information about your web activity. This data can affect your privacy because it can reveal your browsing habits.

Consequences of Clearing Safari Browsing History

When you choose to clear your browsing history in Safari, you also remove saved data like cookies. This improves privacy but can reset some settings on websites. You might need to log in again on some sites after you clear history and website data.

Steps to Clear History on Apple Devices

Clearing History on iPhone Using Settings App

To clear Safari history on an iPhone, open the Settings app . Scroll down and tap Safari . Inside, there is an option to Clear History and Website Data . Tapping this will remove history, cookies, and other browsing data. Note that this does not delete AutoFill information.

Managing Safari History on Mac

On a Mac, the process differs slightly. Open the Safari app and click Safari in the menu bar. Choose Clear History from the dropdown menu. Select a timeframe to delete history from. This action also clears cookies and the back and forward list.

Safari’s Private Browsing Mode and Its Impact

Using Private Browsing Mode in Safari prevents the browser from saving the history. To enable it, open Safari on an iPhone or Mac and tap the tabs icon . Choose Private , then tap Done . No history is saved during these browsing sessions, ensuring privacy.

In conclusion, Safari for iPhone and iPad offers a convenient way to view your browsing history. By pressing and holding the back arrow button on the bottom toolbar, you can view all the websites you have visited in an easy-to-access menu. The M4 Mac mini will be like no other Mac you’ve ever seen

Roman Loyola

2024 may end up being a big year for Apple’s smallest Mac. While other Macs are rumored to get iterative spec bumps, the Mac mini will reportedly undergo drastic changes–changes that may shift the perception of the device. When all is said and done, the Mac mini may end up being Apple’s most intriguing computer. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming Mac mini and why you’ll be in the market for it, whether you know it or not.

If you have an old Mac mini and upgrade to the M4, put that old machine to good use– here are ideas on what to do with that old Mac mini .

New smaller design

The design that Apple introduced in 2010 is going away. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman , Apple is going to make the Mac mini smaller–about the size of the current Apple TV, which measures 3.7 by 3.7 by 1.2 inches (93 by 93 by 31 millimeters), dramatically smaller than the current mini’s 7.75 by 7.75 by 1.41 inch (19.7 by 19.7 x 3.58 cm) frame.

Apple TV 4K 2021

(Pause for trivia: When the 2010 Mac mini arrived, it was actually the same size as the 2007 Apple TV , which at the time was much bigger. Later in 2010, Apple released a smaller Apple TV design , that is similar to the current Apple TV 4K box.)

A smaller Mac mini has been rumored for years. Teardowns of the M1 and M2 Mac mini show that the switch to M-series chips allows for smaller motherboards and other components, leaving a lot of space inside those Macs. Looks like Apple finally is getting rid of that space to make a smaller footprint.

The new design means it takes up less space, which is great if you have a small desk or just want to reduce the amount of clutter in your workspace. It also means it will use fewer materials for production and packaging, so it’s friendlier to the environment. That should please Mother Nature .

Greater portability

A smaller Mac mini opens new mobile possibilities. While most people think of MacBooks when it comes to portability, the Mac mini is sometimes used in mobile situations. People get creative with the Mac mini and use it in car installations, kiosks, DJ setups, and more. It’s much cheaper than a MacBook too, so an ultra-portable mini can be a great option for students and remote workers who need to change locations regularly.

Back of the Orange iMac M3

What if Apple made an orange Mac mini that was a little sibling to the orange iMac? Cute!

 width=

Colorful colors

Apple currently offers the Mac mini in silver and only silver. If you’re hoping for a revival of the space gray Mac mini , it’s probably not happening–a space black Mac mini would be so cool but probably isn’t happening, either. Why? Since the Apple TV is black, Apple will probably keep the Mac mini in silver to differentiate the two.

But here’s some wishful thinking: It’d be cool if Apple decided to treat the Mac mini like the iMac and offer it in the iMac colors. Apple could offer the M4 Mac mini in blue, pink, green, and silver, with the M2 Pro available in the same colors plus orange, purple, and yellow. However, no reports have been made about the Mac mini colors and it seems most probable that silver is the way Apple will go.

The current Mac mini has an aluminum case and the Apple TV has a plastic one. Since aluminum is better at dissipating heat, Apple will likely use it for the new Mac mini.

The new Mac mini is going to be the centerpiece of the M4 Mac rollout . The current Mac mini has either the base M2 chip or the M2 Pro. Apple is sticking with this configuration offering, but according to Gurman, the timing might be different, with the M4 available immediately and the M4 Pro coming a few weeks later.

The M4 made its debut in the iPad Pro and that gives us a good idea of how fast an M4 Mac mini could be. The iPad Pro’s M4 is 45 percent faster than the Mac mini’s M2–the Mac mini’s M4 could be a tad bit faster, thanks to the Mac mini’s form factor that allows it to better dissipate heat. And if the Mac mini has a cooling fan–the iPad Pro doesn’t have one–maybe the Mac mini’s speed will be a few more percentage points faster.

Then there’s also the M4 Pro coming to the Mac mini for even more performance. Expect to see a 45 percent increase in performance over the M2 Pro. An M4 Pro model will be ideal for users who do a lot of processor-intensive tasks.

If you are still using an Intel-based Mac mini, the performance gains with the M4 are huge. The fastest Intel Mac mini is a 2018 model with a 3.2GHz 6-core Core i7 processor–the M4 iPad Pro is 162 percent faster. That makes the M4 Mac mini a difficult upgrade to pass up.

Apple Intelligence

AI is all the rage and Apple Intelligence is how the company is marketing its AI features. An M-series chip is required to run Apple Intelligence, so an M4 and its predecessors are compatible.

Apple Intelligence email software

If you already have an M1 or M2 Mac mini, you can run Apple Intelligence, so this reason alone isn’t a compelling one for upgrading. But it is if you have an Intel Mac mini if the performance boost and new design aren’t enough.

Apple Intelligence includes writing tools to check your grammar and make revisions that improve upon your original drafts; Priority Notifications; summaries for Mail and Safari; and more. There’s also a set of generative AI tools for images and photos. Apple will be releasing these features over the months after macOS Sequoia is officially released, and that’s just to start. Apple Intelligence is now a core part of macOS and Apple will constantly develop new Apple Intelligence features.

Logic dictates that if Apple is making the Mac mini smaller, then it may not have the same ports as the current Mac mini. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has tested new Mac minis with three USB-C ports, HDMI, and a power port. He has not said which, if any, ports will be left off the device.

The two USB-A ports on the current Mac mini are likely to be not on the new Mac mini, so older devices will need an adapter. It seems like there may not be room for gigabit ethernet, either. That could be an issue for folks who like to use the Mac mini as a server or prefer the speed of a wired network.

Apple TV 4K ports 2021

The new Mac mini will be about the same size as the Apple TV 4K (above), which means it won’t have much room for a variety of ports.

 width=

Gurman didn’t specifically say whether the USB-C ports are Thunderbolt (they have the same connector), but since the current Mac mini has up to four Thunderbolt ports, it’s likely the new Mac mini will as well. It’s also possible Apple adds an SD card reader like the MacBook Pro or a front-facing USB-C port like the Mac Studio.

We’ve been waiting for years for Apple to offer a first-party hub for the Mac mini to add extra USB ports as well as Ethernet, HDMI, card slots, and more. We haven’t heard any rumors about such an accessory but you can check out some excellent third-party options in our guide to the best USB-C hubs and adapters for Macs .

An affordable mini powerhouse

The Mac mini is Apple’s most affordable Mac. Granted, it doesn’t include a display, keyboard, or mouse but it’s not difficult to find good versions and still stay well under the price of a low-end iMac. We even have a list of the best displays to help you find one.

2018 Mac mini in space gray

The Mac mini from 2018 looks exactly like the one from 2024—except for the space gray color.

 alt=

That being said, it’s possible Apple could raise the price of the Mac mini. Maybe the iPad Pro gives us a peek at what Apple might do with the Mac mini pricing. The 11-inch M4 iPad Pro with a 256GB SSD is $999–that’s $100 more than the 11-inch M2 iPad Pro with 256GB that it replaced. However, Apple upgraded the display in the M4 iPad Pro from LED to OLED, so that should be considered in the price increase. It also got a slight redesign with a thinner frame, smaller bezels, and a front camera situated on the landscape edge.

The Mac mini’s price history may also give us an idea of what Apple may do. The original Mac mini was released in 2005 starting at $499. In 2006, that base price was raised to $599. Since then, its average price has been higher than that, with the M1 model starting at $699 and the M2 falling back to $599.

Currently, the M2 Mac mini starts at $599 and the M2 Pro model starts at $1,299. With prices going up for everything nowadays, I think we’ll see the Mac mini price go up, perhaps to $699/$1,399. Even so, it’s still a pretty good deal for one of the most unique Macs Apple has ever made.

What Is VTDecoderXPCService on Mac & How To Fix High CPU Usage

Emman Zahid

Even on a brand-new Mac, you might notice it running slow sometimes. This can be caused by a hidden process called VTDecoderXPCService. It’s part of the VideoToolbox, which helps your Mac play videos smoothly.

But sometimes, the process can use too much of your Mac’s power. This often happens when you’re watching videos on websites like YouTube or Facebook. Keep reading to learn how to make your Mac run faster.

Identifying the Root Cause of VTDecoderXPCService Issues on Mac

VTDecoderXPCService, a system tool, can become resource-intensive when used by applications that handle multimedia content like videos and audio. While it usually stays within reasonable limits, it can sometimes consume excessive CPU and memory, even reaching 100% or higher. This can slow down your Mac and make it overheat, even with the fan running at full speed.

If you see multiple copies of if in Activity Monitor, that’s a sign of trouble. Some apps, like Messages, have been known to cause this problem. The Messages app handles different types of media like pictures, videos, and sound, which can sometimes make the tool use too much of your Mac’s resources. If you’re having issues, try closing the Messages app.

Your web browser can also be a problem. Browsers use VTDecoderXPCService to play videos, and sometimes this can go wrong. Many users have reported issues with Chrome, mainly when using malicious browser extensions or uploading files. These activities can cause Google Chrome Helper, a component of Chrome, to consume excessive resources.

Moreover, the system tool can also be used by bad software. Hackers can use it to do harmful things like steal your information or take control of your Mac.

How To Fix VTDecoderXPCService High Memory and CPU Issues Manually From Mac

  • Carefully review the contents of the Launch Agents folder. Look for recently added files with strange names. Examples of malicious files might be “ com.updater.mcy.plist “.
  • Drag any suspicious files to the Bin .

3. Clear Application Support Folders

  • Carefully review the names of the profiles. Look for any that seem unusual, unfamiliar, or unrelated to legitimate software or websites. Examples of malicious profile names might include “ TechSignalSearch “, “ MainSearchPlatform “, “ AdminPrefs “, or “ Safari Settings “.
  • At the bottom of the Profiles window, you’ll see a minus sign ( – ) button. Click on this button to remove the selected profile.

Remove VTDecoderXPCService Issue in Web Browsers

To remove this issue from your web browsers, you need to reset its settings to their original state. This will also clear your customizations, browsing history, and temporary data stored by websites. But don’t worry, it’s temporary and should eliminate the malicious influence.

  • Open Safari and go to the Safari menu .

WIN an iPhone 15 Pro Max!

can you see iphone safari history on mac

Introverts rejoice! At the EU's insistence, you'll soon be able to delete the Messages app from your iPhone in iOS 18

More changes coming to iPhone in the EU.

iOS 16 lock screen

Apple has today announced that it is making more tweaks to the default app experience on iPhone as a result of the Digital Markets Act, a move that will only affect users in the EU.

Earlier this year, Apple introduced several measures to comply with the EU's strict software regulations, including introducing a new browser choice screen that lets users pick a default browser other than Safari the first time they open web browsing on an iPhone.

Today, Apple has announced it's rolling out more changes to that system later this year, along with a new default apps section in the Settings of iOS 18. More notably, it's going to let users delete key apps vital to the iPhone user experience at the EU's insistence, including the camera app and Messages.

More EU iPhone changes

Apple says it has tweaked the new browser choice screen, adding more controls so that users can select a default browser from the choice screen. Users will also have to scroll through all the options before they make their decision, and the app will begin downloading right away. What's more, it'll be placed on the dock of your iPhone's Home Screen so you can find it.

Within the default section of Settings, users will be able to select options for their web browser, mail, app marketplace, contactless payments, messaging, password managers. Next year, Apple will also add navigation apps and translation.

You can already delete some apps that ship with your iPhone, but Apple is adding several key core apps to this too. Later this year, as part of iOS 18 in the EU, you'll be able to delete the App Store, Messages, Camera, Photos, and Safari. If you want to re-download them, you'll be able to do so from the App Store. Why you'd want to do that is anyone's guess, but you can bet your bottom dollar you'll start getting tech support calls from family and friends who've done this accidentally as soon as the change rolls out. The only apps you won't be able to delete are the Settings app and the Phone app.

It's all part of the EU's plan to impose "competition" on iOS, with users pushed harder than ever to adopt alternatives like WhatsApp, Google Chrome, and other alternatives.

Apple says it believes that these changes will satisfy the EU's ongoing enforcement of the DMA, hinting that it isn't currently fully satisfied. Apple didn't give a specific timeframe for the changes but says they'll be available as part of iOS 18 later this year. Lots of these changes, including deleting apps, default browser screen tweaks, and default app controls are also coming to iPadOS.

Apple comes out of UK CMA probe over WebKit safe, but it looks like things might not be over

To use Apple Cash, you'll need to submit your ID for verification starting from October

  • Just_Me_D What will the EU do next if it turns out that despite the changes, iPhone user continues using the Messages app, Safari and others? There have been available 3rd-party apps available to user in almost every category. People like me will try some of them and then end up realizing that the native version was more than enough. Will our choices be a knock against Apple and cause the EU and others to call it anti-competitive? Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t WhatsApp considered the most used or one of the most used messaging apps outside the U.S.? What about people who want to have both Messages and WhatsApp? Are you going to force them to only choose WhatsApp? Reply
Just_Me_D said: What about people who want to have both Messages and WhatsApp? Are you going to force them to only choose WhatsApp?
EdwinG said: The answer is simple. This allows a user to have one of the two, and have e.g. Signal handle your phone calls. It does not require removing an app in favour of another.

There is no option to see Safari history on iCloud.

Turning on Safari for iCloud in Settings allows you to access bookmarks, open tabs, and your reading list across different devices using the same Apple ID, but there is nothing you can access directly in the iCloud.com website.
