Mahabalipuram

The shrine of heritage, ancient temples that reflect the glory of erstwhile kingdoms, pristine beaches that emanate matchless natural beauty, rich cultural heritage that welcomes you with warmth – mahabalipuram is in many ways the splendidly vibrant destination you will love to visit many times..

There are certain destinations that will leave a lasting impression on you, even years after your visit; and they keep calling you back, no matter how far away you are. Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram is one such city that you won’t feel like leaving once you are here. Drenched in an enigmatic old-age charm, the city will amaze you with its rich history, thriving present and prospects of a glorious future.  Noted in history as a busy port town, Mahabalipuram rose in stature and importance during the period between 4th and 9th century when the Pallava dynasty ruled the land. The heydays of the Pallavas saw the building many impressive architectural wonders, many of which continue to fascinate visitors to this day. The temples built during this era loudly proclaim the glory of the Dravidian architectural genre. The highlight of this style can be seen in the ornate stone carvings made from uncut rocks. The splendour of sculptures that adorn these temples are simply stunning. The classic example of this is the Shore temple, one of the oldest temples in India built out of blocks of granite. These majestic structures and their relics that can be seen today, have made Mahabalipuram a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Though a destination for pilgrims and history buffs, Mahabalipuram doesn’t disappoint a leisure traveller. Take a look at the fascinating beaches in the area and you will know why. The strategic location of Mahabalipuram and its proximity to various major South Indian cities has cemented its importance as a weekend getaway.

Excellent location with few issues to watch out

Pros: location - can't ask for anything better. Absolutely the showstopper as all rooms provide 180 degrees view of the bay of bengal and 24x7 roar of the waves provide the best relaxing music. Hammocks, shades, benches and beach recliners spread all across the private beach and we'll lit at night as well. Clean and decently maintained rooms. Cons: mosquitoes are a nightmare. Just uncontrollable with any kind of repellants which if difficult to find from room service. The walls and linen are all stained with little blood marks from mosquitoes murdered by people ) food is mostly average of taste with limited options for a la carte. Room service is typical of a government owned resort. Little late and understaffed. Avoid parking cars in the designated parking lot under the shade of trees. The bird droppings are an absolute menace even when walking around after sunset or sitting outdoors and they show absolutely no mercy in painting the car in all hues. In fact the security makes brisk business by washing it in the morning. Overall a huge campus with good amenities for children and adults both.

Very good beach resort managed by poor management

It was bitter experience during checkin as all the customers booked via make my trip were informed by reception guys that our booking were cancelled from their side and informed to makemytrip. But we all had to argue with them to do checkin. Coming to property, it is recently renovated so everything from room, play area are neat n clean. Beach is so clean that my kid like it so much . We had wonderful time on beach. After our dinner also we had walking along shore and it guarded by security all the time. Food which was part of package(dinner and breakfast) is okkish donot expect so much tasty. Car parking is vast and only issue is crow shit since it is covered by trees. Swimming pool has kids area(3 feet) and for adults from 4 to 12 feet. Overall it is nice stay . Only issue is reception personal ( which will make us think we are in govt office. While we are arguing for our checkin, reception guy was talking nicely to some person who has been known to have recommendation from HOTEL TAMILNADU, MAMALLAPURAM manager)Reception people has to be taught what is customer service.

Excellent Stay

Gaurao Premdas Gethe

This is a very good property for families, families including children and senior citizens. For one night stay cost is little bit more. But you will enjoy this property as much as. They have children play area separate garden including all amenities. They have swimming pool for children as well as elder also. They have complementary morning breakfast and night dinner in buffet. Dinner and breakfast menu is average only south indian and limited options. They have to include some gravy item's in menu such as panir masala, kaju panir masala, and many more so that it will be good for all people who is coming from other states apart from south they will enjoy a lot. You will enjoy beach from your room window. They have very good space and attached beach with property. Really it is very safe and secure property for families.

Amazing location with private beach!

Anjan Singh

Its a govt owned resort, so the place is huge and located right on beach. It has rooms facing the beach. All amenities available - children's park, swimming pool, beach area with hammocks, benches, restaurant, park. The downside is the room clean quality. The bedsheets and towel are just clean for namesake. The rooms are big but not well maintained. Looks like a below 3star HOTEL TAMILNADU, MAMALLAPURAM room quality. The service is generally good, except few staff in restaurant who are stuck in govt employee mentality. Overall, the place is great for family trip with kids purely of the location and huge resort area.

Feel the privacy with waves

Sivakumar V

One and only best budget resorts of mamallapuram. Nobody to disturb your privacy, in your cottage and on beach front. Prefer for first floor cottages as you can enjoy private balcony. Prefer 200 series cottages. You won't feel as a government property. Lot of green spaces for strolling. Lot of good hammocks for naps. Nice and well maintained swimming pool. They have a well stocked bar with vintage look, not expect luxury interior. All places of interest are nearby. Restaurant just ok. Beware of the birds who will use our car tops as toilets. Now i am going to clean, it's look like was in a war with birds.

Best stay in mamallapuram

SUNDHARESH Nagaraj

We planned a day out with my friends on a week end. I heard about this stay through one of my friend. So we booked via mmt. It is such a good place at beach. Early morning sun rise view from bed. Wave’s sound for night sleep. Property surrounded with trees gives natural cool air and shade from sun will call for a pleasant wake with loved once. Swimming pool maintained good and calls swimmers to enjoy till 12 feet. Food is so good. Perfect place to spend good time with nature by forgetting all worries. The problem is visiting once make you visit again and again.

A day at Hotel Tamilnadu Mamallapuram

Visited the resort in the month of August. We were welcomed by the chirping of birds. There are so many trees in the resorts . All the rooms are sea facing and awesomely constructed. It is so near to the beach with private beach access. The rooms were also good and spacious. There is a play area for children as well The breakfast and dinner was complementary, but only with veg options. The restaurant is also not upto the mark. Compared to other facilities in the resort the restaurant can be better. Will return to stay again for sure👍🏼

Location is excellent and food is good even with limited options in buffet. Premises cleanliness can be improved but again i have seen guests littering around and not bothering. House keeping definitely needs improvement. Once you are checked into the room they don't clean the room unless you request or take their own sweet time. Other than that windows etc. Have not been dusted in ages. However waking up to sound of sea waves makes you forget all those little irritations. Swimming pool and other facilities are good too.

Wonderful experience in mahabalipuram

ABHINABA MUKHERJEE

VEERA S KONDETI

Stayed with family. Hotel has been renovated and everything is nice. Good location and ambience. Near to kamakshi temple.

Awesome location right on beach. Average service.

Nishikanta Sahu

The location is bang on the beach. All rooms are beach facing. Like you got o the balcony and you are almost on the beach. Sea is like 50m from balcony. That’s the good part. Everything else is average. Room service is half the time not available. Restaurant they give complimentary breakfast n dinner but they are just ok. Bar was good old style. As it’s a government maintained property it is noticeable. Nothing against the staff but overall picture.

shahul hameed

It's super resort and swimming pool is so good mr murugan was there and the staffs are so polite. All rooms are sea facing. Wonderful view in night. Great place to spent 2 days

Good stay and nice beach view

karthick raja

Very nice and beach view restaurant. Food quality and varieties must be improved a lot bcz all time it seems the same menu and same food. Apart from food the bed must be replaced as latest for better comfort

A fairly good stay

Sandravelu T

We stayed for a special occasion. The resort is crowded on saturdays. They provide free dinner and breakfast for 2. Food is quite decent. Swimming area is open. Good place for a day stay with family and to while away time in beach. The government maintains the place clean with neat horticultute.

Good location on beach front

VENKATA BALAJI BABU SOMAROWTHU

Excellent Beach front location to stay with spectacular view of Seashore from inside the room and Private beach. It is worth staying at least once in life time in such location and enjoy the beauty of sunrise on the east coast. Our family enjoyed a lot on both the twilight and Sunrise times on the beach. Infrastructure condition, maintenance and restaurant service need to be improved to be more competitive with other resorts. Overall a very good stay for our family.

yamini gopal

It was nice experience, wonderful resort ❤ Rooms are very close to ocean ,Nice view from window ....food also good and hygienic...swimming pool was Neat and clean ,less chlorine ...Calm and nice atmosphere ...

Hariprasad R

Rooms are clean and food provided is average. Food can be better for the price they were charging. Wifi and tv and ac were working properly and hot water is available.

We'll maintained property with poor food

Rohit Khanduri

The property is beautiful and very well maintained. With quite a good aminities. Location is amazing with beach next to door. The only negative is the restaurant which serves only south indian food. Despite having multi cuisine in name. The beds and room furniture are also outdated and needs immediate upgrade.

Excellent location and place. Very near beach and swimming pool. Food option was limited but tasty. The staff was very courteous and helpful but they are constrained to support extensively due to the organizational limitations. Wonderful experience for the price.

Mamallapuram (மாமல்லபுரம் Māmallapuram ), also known as Mahabalipuram , is a tourist town 60 km south of Chennai on the east coast of India, famous for its stone carvings.

Understand [ edit ]

mahabalipuram tamilnadu tourism hotel

Mamallapuram dates back to the Tamil Pallava dynasty in the 7th-9th century. The structures here, mostly carved straight out of granite, are among the oldest existing examples of Dravidian (South Indian) architecture .

Today's Mamallapuram is purely a tourist town and one of the major attractions around Chennai. The East Coast Road has made it easily accessible - just about an hour from the city. Unfortunately, the entire strip is now a mess of restaurants, resorts, amusement parks, people, discarded plastic and chaotic traffic. At one time you could see the Bay of Bengal almost all the way to M'puram, but now there is so much development that the ocean is glimpsed only as you get close to M'puram.

Mamallapuram itself was getting run down over the last decade with very patchy efforts at keeping the monuments preserved. This has changed in the last few years with the Shore Temple being included in the UNESCO heritage project. The surroundings have been made much nicer, but, there has been a lot of wind and water erosion on the temple carvings with many of them having undergone loss of detail over the years. Sort of too little, too late, but still, better than nothing.

Be prepared to fight your way through clutches of beggars , guides, snakes charmers and so on, all of which are an essential part of the experience and not to be frowned upon. The whole thing would be bland without them. A nuisance, but harmless.

Get in [ edit ]

By bus [ edit ].

Buses arrive in the centre of town from CMBT and Tiruvanmiyur in Chennai and from Kanchipuram . There are direct buses from CMBT, but you can take any bus that has ECR written on the front. The ECR bus, which can be picked up at Tiruvanmiur, is the most economical way of getting to Mamallapuram from Chennai, costing less than ₹40 (1 hour). The ECR bus will drop you about 2 kilometres outside of town, and rickshaws will be outside waiting (can be bargained down to ₹30). You can also catch the ECR bus from Pondicherry for ₹65 (2 hours).

To get to the ECR from Triplicane, walk to Kamarajar Promenade running parallel with the beach. Walk to the beach side of the road and head to the nearest bus stop. Take bus SP19 or SP19x to Tiruvanmiyur (₹15). The ECR bus stop is 30 meters before the Tiruvanmiur stop.

By taxi [ edit ]

A taxi from Chennai will cost ₹600-₹800 one-way ($15–20) though the rates are likely to be higher based on the season, cab operator. Visitors outside Chennai, even Indian nationals and most definitely from Overseas are likely to be asked for higher rates. To or from the airport will cost ₹800-₹1,200 and will take one hour off peak and 1 1/2 hours peak time. Please negotiate the cab fares at the beginning of the journey and remain firm if the operator asks for more.

By car [ edit ]

The drive from Chennai on the East Coast Road is, by Indian standards, a wonderful experience: it is one of the few toll roads in India and maintained well. That said, it's still only one lane per direction with no divider, so overtaking tends to be hair-raising and high-speed head-on collisions are all too common. The road runs parallel to the coast of Bay of Bengal making it a scenic driveway, although you will not see the sea until the last few miles. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami wreaked havoc around here, so you will see shanty-towns built for affected fishermen and much of the greenery has been swept away.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

It is easy to get around the town on foot, though bike rental is also available. It is relatively a small city and all points of interest are close to each other. Paid parking areas are available near the Shore Temple and the Five Rathas.

You can also hire a cab (non-a/c) for about ₹150 for 2 1/2 hours, during which you will be taken to all the major tourists spots in Mamallapuram.

See [ edit ]

mahabalipuram tamilnadu tourism hotel

For visiting all three sites the Shore Temple, cave temples and the Five Rathas you need to buy entry tickets. One can buy tickets online at https://asi.payumoney.com/quick/mam or by scanning the QR Code displayed at entry gates of tourist places and then paying through mobile wallets. The ticket counter closes at 5:30PM and entry to the attractions ends at 6PM. A combined entrance ticket to the Shore Temple and the Five Rathas costs ₹600 for foreigners and ₹35 for Indian citizens. Local guides, who speak multiple languages, are available for around ₹600 for a tour of all main attractions.

Rath Temples [ edit ]

These temples are carved out of a rock rather than carved into a rock (Cave temples).

  • 12.608654 80.189437 2 Dharmaraja Ratha .
  • 12.608807 80.189518 3 Bhima Ratha .
  • 12.608942 80.18962 4 Arjuna-Draupadi Ratha .

  • 12.620244 80.187587 7 Valayankuttai Ratha . ( updated Sep 2021 )

Cave Temples [ edit ]

The cave temples are carved into a rock.

mahabalipuram tamilnadu tourism hotel

  • 12.61523 80.1916 8 Mahishamardini Cave ( Mahishamardini Rock Cut Mandapa ). The central carving in this cave is of Shiva and Parvati and Murugan
  • 12.61806 80.19224 9 Varaha Cave . Varaha Cave has four impressive carvings of Vishnu, Gakalakshmi, Trivikama and Durga. ( updated Feb 2020 )
  • 12.617491 80.192562 10 Krishna Mandapam . ( updated Sep 2021 )
  • 12.618545 80.191052 11 Koneri Cave . ( updated Sep 2021 )

  • 12.6571 80.20931 13 Tiger Cave , Saluvankuppam . Rock Cut Hindu temple noted for its carvings of tigers. The mouth of the cave forms the entrance to the temple. ( updated Feb 2020 )
  • 12.657935 80.209533 14 Atiranachanda Cave . ( updated Sep 2021 )

Structural temples [ edit ]

The structural (free-standing) temples at Mamallapuram have been built with cut stones as building blocks, rather than carved into a rock (cave temples) or out of a rock (ratha temples).

  • 12.61644 80.19923 15 Shore Temple . The oldest structure in the area, built c. 700 AD. A Shiva lingam is enshrined in the central building. Unlike Mamallapuram's other monuments, the Shore Temple is a building (not carved from rock) and the bulk of the current structure is a reconstruction after it was struck by a cyclone. It's not particularly large, and the carvings have been badly eroded by the wind and the sea, but this adds to the sense of antiquity. The area around the temple is now a landscaped park, with guards keeping the hordes of souvenir hawkers at bay; despite that, the site can get very crowded on weekends.
  • 12.627137 80.194883 16 Mukunda Nayanar Temple .
  • 12.615123 80.191505 17 Olakkanesvara temple . Known as the 'Old Light House'" this structural temple stands atop the Mahishasuramardini Cave. ( updated Sep 2021 )

Other rock monuments [ edit ]

  • 12.61914 80.19241 18 Krishna's Butterball . This is a giant natural rock perched on a hillside, seemingly in defiance of all laws of physics—it's a common sight to see visitors placing hands under the stone posing for pics, which looks as though they are holding it! The rock provides welcome shade if you dare to sit underneath it, and local kids have discovered that the slippery nearby hillside also makes a great natural slide.

Rock reliefs [ edit ]

Reliefs are carved on rocks or boulders.

  • 12.61774 80.19264 19 Arjuna's Penance ( Descent of the Ganges ). A giant bas-relief filled with detailed carvings, including a family of elephants and monkeys. Archaeologists still squabble over what, exactly, the bas relief depicts; the central figure may actually depict Bhagiratha, not Arjuna.

Museums [ edit ]

  • 12.61585 80.19365 20 Sculpture Museum ( Meganath Sculptures ), No. 32, Five Rathas Road, East Raja Street . This museum has hundreds of sculptures in stone, wood etc. It is well worth a visit. ₹2 entrance fee .
  • 12.609324 80.18779 21 Indian Sea Shell Museum . The museum came up in 2017 and is an initiative of sea shell collector K Raja Mohamed. The museum displays about 6,000 shells out of which about 2,300 are from Mohamad's personal collection. The museum also has a pearl section apart from a few pearls on display the museum also narrates the story of the pearl through charts and diagrams. The museum also displays artifacts made of sea shell. Apart from shells and pearls the museum also displays aquarium fishes. Tourist also are provided with the option of having a fish spa in the museum. Last of all the museum has a souvenir shop selling pearls, sea shell and othe related artifacts. ( updated Sep 2021 )
  • 12.616152 80.192322 22 Maritime Museum . 9:30AM-5:30PM . The museum came up in 2017 and houses several models of ships and boats including that of Titanic. The museum also has a submarine simulator. giving a real feel of the submarine. There is a silk route gallery a map shows the different land and sea route of the silk trade in the ancient world. There are several ancient boats on display. The complex also houses the Light House museum and a common ticket is required to visit both. ( updated Sep 2021 )

Lighthouse [ edit ]

  • 12.615428 80.19182 23 Light House and museum . 10AM-5:30PM . The lighthouse dates back to 1887 and is open to the public. A spiral stair leads to the top offering a birds-eye view of land and sea including the ruined temples and caves. The complex also houses a lighthouse museum. The operation of the lighthouse is explained with several models. On display is a series of old lighthouse lamps. Prior to the construction of the lighthouse the nearby Olakkanesvara temple served as a lighthouse with lights fitted on its top. Those lights and equipment are on display in the museum. The museum also has a short light and sound show operating several times a day. ( updated Sep 2021 )

Note: Old and new light houses provide views across the area to the sea. There are several unfinished temples nearby, and the December 2004 tsunami exposed more previously submerged temples.

Learn [ edit ]

Local sculptors in the main street leading to the sea (after the Tina Shell View Lodge) teach stone carving . You will learn how to sculpt a simple locket, and the longer you stay, the more complicated things you'll be able to do. For a simple locket at least 5 hours are needed. For ₹100 a day you can learn/work as long as you like everyday (the result is yours of course).

Buy [ edit ]

Stone sculptures made by local artists. You can see them on their work (and also learn it yourself, see #Learn ). You can save a lot of money if you buy sculptures in small side roads and not in the main road.

Eat [ edit ]

mahabalipuram tamilnadu tourism hotel

There are lots of food stands in the centre serving large portions for next-to-nothing prices. Look specifically at the road leading down the Shore Temple from the bus stop, early in the morning at breakfast time.

Mamallapuram is famous for its coconuts , which are available from hawkers around all major sites.

Clustered around Othavadai Street and Othavadai Cross are restaurants catering primarily to tourists, which serve generally undistinguished Western food. Your best bet is often fresh grilled fish (which you can usually select yourself) served with french fries or salad.

  • 12.61958 80.19827 1 Sea Shore Garden Beach restaurant ( Garden View Restaurant ), Othavadai Cross Street ( At Greenwoods Beach Resort ). Excellent food, each order freshly prepared, views of the street or the garden courtyard. Breakfast ₹25-45, lunch and dinner ₹65-145 . ( updated Feb 2020 )
  • 12.61975 80.19656 2 Gecko Cafe , Othavadai Cross . Family-run, fast, friendly and clean. Features Indian veg and non veg food as well as freshest seafood, offers a nice lake view for bird watching and has a relaxed atmosphere, very helpful waiter and cook. ( updated Nov 2016 )
  • 12.61872 80.19383 3 The Golden Palate , 104, East Raja Street ( At Hotel Mamalla Heritage ), ☏ +91 44 27442060 , +91 44 27442260 , +91 44 27442360 . Serves excellent Indian vegetarian food. Breakfast from 7AM is a poor deal at ₹153 (including tax) for a fairly simple buffet. It does, however, offer air conditioning! The lunch from midday is highly recommended... the best vegetarian thali spread for miles! It also has a pleasant non-veg restaurant on the rooftop. ( updated Feb 2020 )
  • 12.61678 80.19355 4 Mamalla Bhavan , Shore Temple Road ( near Raja Street ), ☏ +91 44 27442250 . Cheap, very good, popular veg thali (unlimited vegetables and curries, fixed rice and roti/bread) joint. ₹90 to ₹120 (lunch thali as of 2021-02-04) . ( updated Feb 2021 )
  • 12.61959 80.19639 5 Moonrakers Restaurant , Othavadai St . Multi-story restaurant with eclectic decoration, listed in all the guidebooks and hence quite popular with foreign tourists. The menu runs the gamut of Indian and Western favorites, veg and non-veg, although staff will try to steer you towards the expensive seafood items. Most dishes under ₹100, but seafood will cost you more. Also expect to pay more for extra bread or rice, drinks, etc. Beers around ₹150. Now expanded to control two places opposite one another.
  • 12.61943 80.19672 6 Nautilus , #4, Othavadai Cross Street . Popular with foreign tourists, this French-owned cafe features credible Western food, a decent cup of coffee, a competent and friendly waitstaff, and a library stocked with Tintin and Asterix volumes. ₹50-₹200 . ( updated Feb 2020 )
  • 12.61879 80.19696 7 The New Cafe ( Lakshmi Lodge ), No 6, Ottavadai Cross St , ☏ +91 44-27442463 . Serve healthy breakfast and excellent vegetarian food (Tamil Nadu style) and variety of fresh fish, prawns and lobsters, crabs and calamari freshly prepared with excellent taste. A beautiful terrace with view of the ocean and sound.
  • 12.61988 80.19424 8 Saabra Fast Food . On the corner of Ottavadai Street and East Raja Street. Only four tables available at hole in the wall. Caters to a mostly Indian crowd. Fresh, tasty Northern India food at a great price. Full menu available for lunch and dinner. Most main dishes are under ₹50. Naan ₹15. . ( updated Feb 2020 )
  • 12.61988 80.19424 9 Sri Ananda Bhavan Restaurant , corner of Ottavadai Street and East Raja Street . Primarily an Indian scene but popular with Westerners too. Pure veg, cheap and good. • 12.61926 80.19828 10 Surf Turf Mahabs . Surf provides a wide variety of food for all seafood lovers. This restaurant is at the entrance of the town. If you are not the greatest fan of seafood, then you will find this restaurant over priced. If you are really hungry, then Surf is not a good place to eat. The service is really late and you will receive your order just before you are about to starve down. ( updated Feb 2020 )

Drink [ edit ]

Many restaurants serve beer though it may not be on the menu, usually Kingfisher but sometimes 'Bullet' (slightly higher alcohol content). Prices of beer are generally ₹130-150 (premium-strong) per bottle at cost and sold at ₹250 (if you ask) in restaurants.

No government-run TASMAC wine shop is available in town; to buy alcohol you must drive around 2 km out from Mamallapuram to the TASMAC Elite near the ECR road junction of Mahabalipuram town.

Stay safe [ edit ]

India's first nuclear reactor and much of its nuclear research program is just down the beach in Kalpakkam . Don't wander into restricted areas.

Most restaurants close by 11PM and the town is basically dead after that. Loitering around very late at night is not too safe.

Be careful when getting into the sea. There can be sudden dips and the sea often gets very rough and unsafe.

Latest Move to Fight Overtourism in India – India Report

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

April 30th, 2024 at 11:00 PM EDT

The court’s order follows the Tamil Nadu government report that said 20,000 vehicles enter these hill stations every day. This posed concerns for the elephants in the region as well as the drought prevailing in the Nilgiris.

The Skift India Newsletter is your go-to platform for all news related to travel, tourism, airlines, and hospitality in India.

The Madras High Court has made it mandatory for all motor vehicles seeking to enter the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal between May 7 and June 30 to obtain electronic passes. The aim is to collect data on the number of tourists visiting and the number and types of vehicles that are entering these hill stations.

Heavy traffic in the hills: The court’s order came as the Tamil Nadu government filed a status report that said 20,000 vehicles enter these hill stations every day. This posed concerns for the elephants in the region as well as the drought prevailing in the Nilgiris, though the court clarified that there won’t be a cap on the number of e-passes issued.

Last month, the government of Tamil Nadu had agreed to fix the carrying capacity for roads leading to these eco-sensitive hill stations after a scientific assessment. The court has now asked the district administrations to collect as much information as possible regarding the tourists visiting these areas while issuing the e-passes to help the assessment.

Overtourism in India: Hill stations in India have been facing overcrowding during peak summers as tourists in large numbers flock to these destinations.

In 2023, destinations such as Nainital, Kasauli, Shimla, and Manali faced an influx of tourists, causing local authorities to place entry restrictions. The government of India also supported the idea of determining carrying capacity of hill stations and eco-sensitive locations in the Himalayan states to curb overtourism.

Apart from measures like fixing carrying capacity at sensitive locations, the government is working to develop destinations and improve infrastructure to tackle possible overcrowding. These include building and revamping destinations like Ujjain and Varanasi. India is also trying to popularize alternative underpenetrated tourist destinations like Lakshadweep. Moreover, states like Goa and Kerala are also focusing on sustainable and regenerative strategies that can tackle ill-effects of overtourism.

AirAsia Announces New Routes to Kozhikode, Guwahati

Low-cost carrier AirAsia has announced two new routes to Kozhikode and Guwahati from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. With this, the airline will have 15 direct routes in India. AirAsia will operate three weekly flights to both these destinations starting August 1.

The airline’s group chief commercial officer Paul Caroll said that India is one of the biggest markets for AirAsia and it is accelerating its operations in the country.

Since January this year, AirAsia has announced seven new routes in India, including those to Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Thiruvananthapuram, and Visakhapatnam. Till 2023, the airline was operating eight routes in India.

Korea Tourism Holds Roadshows to Showcase Leisure, MICE Potential in India

The Korea Tourism Organization conducted roadshows in India to showcase its leisure and Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) potential. This comes as the country has set a target to welcome 200,000 Indian tourists this year. Of these, Korea aims to receive 20,000 MICE delegates.

Regional director Myong Kil Yun said, “With a record-breaking target of welcoming 200,000 Indian travelers this year, the recent roadshows were a success. We are confident that by showcasing the diverse experiences Korea offers, we can achieve this ambitious goal.”

In 2023, 120,000 Indian travelers visited South Korea. In order to meet its goal this year, the country is looking at joint marketing promotions, familiarization trips, multi-city roadshows, as well as digital marketing promotions.

Thomas Cook, SOTC Operate Inaugural Bengaluru-Bhutan Charter Flight

Travel services provider Thomas Cook, along with its group company SOTC, operated its inaugural charter flight between Bengaluru and Bhutan’s Paro at 100% occupancy. “This exceptional delivery underscores the robust demand from Bengaluru and Karnataka for premium destinations-experiences,” the company said in a statement.

The company’s charter flights scheduled for May 4 and 11 have also been fully booked. This has led to Thomas Cook’s decision to operate two additional charters on May 18 and 25.

Thomas Cook country head for Holidays Rajeev Kale said, “We had handpicked Bengaluru airport as the hub/gateway for this initiative based on three clear opportunities. First is that Karnataka is our top source market. Moreover, there is a high demand for consumers for unique destinations-experiences. Another reason is the absence of direct connectivity for Bhutan from South India.”
