Deafheaven Announce 2023 Australian Tour

By Alex Gallagher

After being announced as part of this year’s Dark Mofo lineup last month, Californian black metal/shoegaze quintet Deafheaven have now announced a full Australian tour leading up to their festival appearance in Hobart.

The tour will kick off Wednesday, 31st May with the first of two consecutive evenings at Max Watts in Melbourne, with shows also booked for Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. The tour will conclude with a performance as part of Dark Mofo on Thursday, 15th June, where Deafheaven will perform their seminal 2013 album Sunbather in full, exclusively as part of the festival.

Deafheaven – ‘In Blur’

The band will be joined in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane by Closure in Moscow , with Melbourne metalcore band RUN also performing on selected dates. See dates and venues below – tickets are on sale now.

Deafheaven’s return to Australia is a long time coming. The band last toured the country in 2019, with a string of headline shows in addition to an appearance at that year’s Farmer & the Owl festival. They were set to come back as part of last year’s edition of Dark Mofo, but were forced to cancel their appearance after a member of their team tested positive for COVID-19.

Since they last visited, Deafheaven have released their fifth studio album, Infinite Granite , which arrived in 2021. The album saw the band take a dramatic departure from the black metal influences that had been a core part of their sound from their inception, shifting to a more melodic, shoegaze-oriented style.

Deafheaven announce Australia & New Zealand tour dates

Deafheaven

American shoegaze-meets-black-metal trailblazers DEAFHEAVEN have announced their most extensive Australian & New Zealand headline tour to date, scheduled for May & June 2023.

Their first visit in over 4 years will see them play in Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney & Melbourne, as well as Wellington, Auckland and finally wrapping up the tour at Hobart’s Dark Mofo. The band will play multiple shows in Melbourne & Perth, as well as their biggest ever headline shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide.

The band are touring in support of their acclaimed new album ‘Infinite Granite.’ The record features some of their finest melodic songwriting to date, whilst exploring less intense sonic territory than their previous records.

From the uplift of ‘Great Mass of Color’ to the brooding ‘In Blur’, the record is awash with lush soundscapes conjured by the band and anchored by singer George Clarke’s startlingly impressive melodic tenor and multi part harmonies.

Their live show continues to be a juxtaposition of epic proportions and this tour will be no exception, with five diverse studio albums to draw from. The band will also celebrate 10 years of their seminal ‘blackgaze’ record ‘Sunbather’ by performing it in full exclusively at Dark Mofo Festival.

Joining the tour for all east coast shows will be Australian alternative rock quintet Closure in Moscow. With their recent single ‘Better Way’ the cult Melbourne band have signalled a return to their melodic, hook-laden roots and will release their new album ‘Soft Hell’ in late 2023.

Also in support will be Melbourne band RUN, featuring frontman Lochlan Watt (triple j’s The Racket, Nuclear Summer, Colossvs, Thy Art Is Murder). Their new single ‘Iris’ (a cover of the Goo Goo Dolls classic) is an intense collision of black metal, 90s alt rock, post-metal and metalcore – a perfect fit for this bill.

Opening in Melbourne will be Suldusk, whose gothic-acoustic sound has earned them a worldwide following purely by word of mouth.

Support in Perth comes from doom-jazz quartet Tangled Thoughts of Leaving. Known for their fiery and intense live performances, they will be releasing their first new material in 5 years in the coming weeks.

Deafheaven – Gig Review & Photo Gallery 3rd June @ The Triffid, Brisbane QLD

deafheaven australia tour

Deafheaven The Triffid, Brisbane, QLD June 3rd, 2023 Support:  Closure In Moscow , RUN

A true game changing act, Deafheaven tore-up the black metal rule book when they exploded onto the scene with their sophomore record Sunbather . Sure, other frost-bitten extreme bands have explored the inclusion of atmospheric elements into their sound, but no other artist has successfully melded black metal with shoegaze, post-rock and elements of alternative rock – and the quintet received some serious mainstream attention and accolades for their efforts. For their fourth tour of Australia, the group are not only armed with a (relatively) new album, 2021’s excellent Infinite Granite , but a decade-worth of some of the most powerful and emotional blackened music ever.

Opening tonight’s showing is the quickly rising quintet RUN . With a sound hard to fit into an exact genre, there are moments of visceral pace and intensity, as well as choruses that wouldn’t sound out of place in the early 00’s post-hardcore/metalcore scene. Frontman Lochlan Watt is a great leader and puts on a hell of a performance – it’s only obvious how absolutely ragged his voice is during the between-song banter. Recent single ‘ Everyone’s Cancelled, Everything’s Cancer ’ is a high point of their set, while their metaled-up cover of The Goo Goo Dolls ‘ Iris ’ clearly has that potential crossover/viral element to it. Even the blastbeats don’t sound out of place on RUN ’s take on the 90s anthem. Backed by a great, beefy mix, RUN put on a strong showing and their riff-heavy half an hour gets more than solid reaction from the slowly filling Triffid . A band to keep more than one eye on.

While RUN ’s sound shared a lot of common ground with our headliners, the same can not said for the fellow supports Closure In Moscow . The long-running progressive/alt/funk Melbourne act is a frankly strange choice for this tour, and it seems to be a mutual feeling for a majority of those in attendance. Playing to an emptier venue than RUN , you can literally hear a pin-drop between tracks – it borders on an awkward experience for those who aren’t in the outside bar area.  No slight at the musicians of course – they’re both tight and relaxed, and kudos to them for showing no signs of playing to a disinterested room. Frontman Christopher de Cinque is comfortable and casual, vocally reminiscent of the likes of The Mars Volta ’s Cedric Bixler – Zavala and the late, great Jeff Buckley . Closure In Moscow ’s music is uptempo and danceable, which would normally sound perfect a Saturday night out on the town, but here in The Triffid supporting a black metal/shoegaze hybrid (neither of which styles you’d refer to as uptempo or danceable), Closure In Moscow are too out of place – and just don’t have the songs – to make this anything more than a case of strange bedfellows.

With The Triffid finally beginning to fill out, Deafheaven take to the stage to rapturous applause as they launch headfirst into the furious ‘ Black Brick ’. While they may be celebrating 10 years of Sunbather at their Dark Mofo appearance later in the month, tonight is all about Deafheaven ’s newest full length Infinite Granite , and we’re treated with something of a ‘greatest hits’ style setlist. Perhaps due in part to the lacklustre previous act, but there is a major step up in every regard with Deafheaven ’s performance this evening. The increased crowd response helps of course, and while Deafheaven are a well toured unit by this point, it’s clear that the American’s still harbour real passion and enjoyment for their art. Their emotionally charged sound sees frontman George Clarke shriek and barrel his way across the stage like a man possessed, while the guitar interplay between Shiv Mehra and founding member Kerry McCoy is magical, especially during the soaring leads of ‘ In Blur ’ and the powerful ‘ Gifts for the Earth ’.

Newer material from Infinite Granite slots in perfectly, with the more restrained and clean vocal orientated tracks sounding lush and immense in the live setting – again the great sound bolsters things, although the low-end is a little overwhelming during the rare moments of raging double kicks. The main set closes with the fantastic ‘ Mombasa ’ – a tune that touches on every element of Deafheaven ’s sound both old and new – and then the amazing one-two encore of ‘ Brought To The Water ’ and the massive ‘ Dream House ’, which conjures up the only pit of the night and is the perfect way to conclude their performance.

While it’s only natural to be jealous of those going to Dark Mofo and witnessing Sunbather being hammered out front to back, tonight is still a special and amazing showing from one a true modern day great bands. This evening’s atmosphere may be a little tamer compared to the usual black metal fare, but the diverse crowd here in The Triffid will have unquestionably shown Deafheaven enough love – and received it back – to bring the groundbreaking five piece down under once again.

Deafheaven Announce Australian Tour

deafheaven australia tour

San Francisco’s Deafheaven have announced a run of highly anticipated Australian club shows in June, as well as a performance at the Vivid Live Festival in Sydney.

Deafheaven occupy a curious and oft-divisive space between being an ambitious outfit and playing proudly complex, niche music. They are evidence that these qualities need not be mutually exclusive. In five years they have become one of the most successful acts to spring from the genres they embrace. Their sound is intoxicating, deft musicianship firmly engendering the quintet as one musicians will endlessly deconstruct, and one laypeople merely marvel at. The atmospheric diversity of their sound has only become more intense across their three acclaimed albums.

In embracing both harmony and discord so fully, Deafheaven are an unique musical experience.  Their all-encompassing live program will swallow you whole, and anybody privileged enough to have caught this incredible act live will attest to their ferocious live capabilities. You can view their complete set from 2014’s Pitchfork Music Festival, below.

Deafheaven live in sydney – photos and review.

deafheaven australia tour

Deafheaven Unleashed a relentless assault on Sydney’s Metro Theatre, anticipating an epic Dark Mofo debut. Adam Davis-Powell was there to review and photograph:

Deafheaven, the genre-defying masters of black metal and shoegaze, once again proved their dominance as they stormed Sydney’s Metro Theatre, leaving no doubt that they are at the forefront of their craft. Having witnessed their awe-inspiring performances on every Australian tour, I can confidently say that each time they take the stage, they surpass all expectations and continue to elevate their artistry to new heights.

Kicking off the night was Melbourne’s own metalcore powerhouse, RUN . Taking the stage just an hour after the doors opened, the band commanded the attention of a near-full room. Their sound harkened back to the music that shaped my early 2000s, reminiscent of the metalcore I grew up with. Lochlan Watt, the band’s lead singer, who also hosts The Racket on triple j, exuded a commanding yet calming presence, effortlessly towering over the audience and foldback monitors. RUN’s exceptional sound and stage presence have firmly secured their spot on bills across Australia, and they are definitely a band to keep a close eye on.

Next up was Closure in Moscow from Melbourne, their post-prog-psych-hardcore-brainfuck fusion that can only be described as a pre-teen ADHD mangled charade. The musicianship displayed by each member was nothing short of mind-blowing, and their shared looks of pure happiness on stage were infectious. It was evident that every member was a master of their trade, effortlessly weaving intricate melodies and rhythms into a cohesive and captivating performance.

But the night belonged to the Cali headliners themselves, Deafheaven . This marked their fourth Australian tour in nine years, and the devoted following they have amassed in this country is truly astonishing. The audience was a diverse mix of people from all backgrounds, united by their love for the music. Deafheaven treated the crowd to a dynamic setlist, carefully curating a selection of fan favourites from their entire discography. Opening and closing with the explosive anthems “Black Brick” and “Dream House,” the band captivated the audience from start to finish.

The atmosphere was electrifying as Deafheaven flawlessly merged the raw aggression of black metal with the ethereal beauty of shoegaze. George Clarke’s commanding stage presence, combined with the band’s intense and precise instrumentation, created a sonic experience that transcended genres.

The sheer energy and emotion pouring from the stage were palpable, infecting

the crowd with an exhilarating sense of euphoria.

For those lucky enough to catch Deafheaven at Dark Mofo, prepare yourselves for an unforgettable and mind-bending experience. This band’s ability to defy expectations and push the boundaries of their genre is unparalleled, and their live performances are nothing short of cathartic. Deafheaven’s relentless assault on the senses will leave you breathless, and their music will resonate with you long after the final notes fade into the night.

Australian & New Zealand Tour February 2019

deafheaven australia tour

Handsome Tours is proud to announce that  Deafheaven   will once again grace Australian and New Zealand shores next year, off the back of their latest album  ‘Ordinary Corrupt Human Love’ .

Deafheaven will be joined by special guests and pioneering duo, Divide and Dissolve in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, alongside Zeal & Ardor in Perth.

The tour follows Deafheaven’s famed 2016 visit, which saw the Californian outfit become the first black metal band ever to perform at the Sydney Opera House as part a stacked VividLIVE program also featuring Bon Iver, New Order and Anohni. This once-in-a-lifetime performance was described by Noisey as “dense, immense and immaculate” and inspired one MusicFeeds writer to herald it “one of the most enthralling and sonically capitvating gigs of my professional career”.

Continuing the impressive legacy of their highly acclaimed second album  ‘Sunbather’  and subsequent release  ‘New Bermuda’ , Deafheaven’s  ‘Ordinary Corrupt Human Love’  sees   the band expand on their kinetic sound with layered psychedelic vocals, jazz-inspired percussion, and intricate piano melodies. The album earned a stunning 8.5/10 from Pitchfork and the ominous crown of  “true post-metal fusion”  from Rolling Stone.

Formed in San Francisco in 2010, Deafheaven (vocalist George Clarke, guitarists Kerry McCoy and Shiv Mehra, and drummer Dan Tracy) made their debut with 2011’s ‘ Roads To Judah’  and enjoyed an unexpected crossover hit with 2013’s  ‘Sunbather’.  Since then, the band’s genre-defying sound has made them one of the most divisive and disarming bands in modern metal and their lauded live show has recruited fans from all corners of the globe.

Don’t miss your chance to see Deafheaven on their Autumn 2019 tour of Australia and New Zealand.

I listened to their stuff briefly when Sunbather came out, but it didn't grab me. Everything clicked into place when I saw them live though. Face-meltingly loud for the most part, and George Clarke is a great frontman. He was so violent, energetic and theatrical, with all sorts of bizarre hand gestures and movements, writhing on the floor, messing with the mic stand and all that. Really great with the crowd interactions too. He crowd surfed a few times, and was often right up in front of people screaming; he'd sort of reach out into the crowd an awful lot too. One guy climbed over the barrier at the front and was getting taken off by security when George motioned for them to bring the guy on stage. He gave him the mike, let him scream into it a few times, then he gave him a massive hug and let him down. Also at the front row he really grasped people's hands with this meaningful gesture of shared emotion or something, it was really odd. There was even some sort of laying of hands effect going on, where the crowd would move into him and just sort of rested their palms on him or grasped his shirt. In general, I can't state how aggressively intense the concert was; I was expecting something more subdued, chilled or introspective, but it was decidedly brutal, along the lines of more conventional black metal but with their unique take.

The opener were great too, an electro-industrial group called Youth Code. Their lead vocalist was also extremely entertaining, running up to the crowd at one point and shoving their heads down to get them into it. The accompanying light show was top-notch too!

Chaotic, unstructured and in general just very, very loud, Deafheaven are a band that ooze darkness and play the sort of music that has an overwhelming energy to it. Starting up in 2010, they are fair newcomers to the black metal niche market but have done well to secure a solid fanbase. In July 2013, Deafheaven play a set at Bottom Of The Hill in their home town of San Francisco, quite a tightly packed club that was evidently rich with atmosphere when the band came on. They made a very dramatic opening to their set as the crowd waited through three minutes of mysterious instrumental before the song 'Dream House' finally kicked in. The guitars and drums were ruthlessly repetitive in an attempt to build up as much sound as possible and lead singer (or screamer if you will) George Clarke made sure he was at his theatrical best, leaning into the crowd and yelling his lungs out when required to. There was a break between all the predictable mania when the song 'Irresistible' played but just a few minutes later, Deafheaven performed Sunbather and consequently burst everyone's eardrums. My favourite part of the night was the performance of 'Unrequited', one of Deafheaven's more sinister numbers and the band done well to capture the mood, turning the lights down as George eerily beckoned people to the front. Another thing I enjoyed was the privilege of hearing a clear-ish melody in the song despite the musical ruckus. The Cali-based band certainly tore the roof off of the place, although if you want to see them at future gigs, a pair of earbuds is advised.

Got to the gig only to find that the support act, Myrkur, who I was looking forward to seeing even more than Deafheaven, had cancelled. Apparently Amalie Bruun had come down ill. The owners of the venue could have let people know that through their website, but didn't (I checked it that morning before I left home, and I thentravelled a *long* way to be there). So they (the owners) definitely get themselves put into the annoying category.

Deafheaven's bass-player filled in for Myrkur by playing a short set of techno numbers, over which he put vocals. The audience who'd come to see two black-metal bands, proved pretty generous and accommodating to this. The set wasn't very good, and the guy's on-stage movements had something of the Ali-G about them.

I'd heard (and seen footage that suggests) that Deafheaven are boring live, but actually they weren't. They're entirely carried, though, by the energy of their drummer and vocalist - the rest of the band just stand still on stage, manifesting no energy, emotion, or anything. Overall: the experience was ok, but there's room for improvement on all fronts. Amalie - please do get well soon! I'd like to see Myrkur.

I had seen Deafheaven once before at The Chapel last November, and while I had I great time, I found that the mixing and performance from the band members were kind of incomprehensible. It was really loud and textured, much like their first two albums. It gave a great, dreamy feel. With their more riff focused third effort, their live show has changed to reflect it. Frontman George Clarke orchestrates the crowd with his mesmerizing dances and commanding screams. Kerry McCoy lays down layer upon layer of huge riffs. Even the band's older material feels more powerful and meaningful with stronger mixing a better band dynamic with the excellent new supporting members, who truly surprised me. Daniel Tracy layed down New Bermuda's complex beats with a cool head and powerful strikes. Stephen Clark was a consistently important stage presence, bringing the band together. Shiv Mehra was strong second guitarist, adding to the wall of sound. I would strongly recommend catching them on this tour.

See this band live! If you like their music you will not be disappointed. George Clarke is an incredible frontman (whose stage presence brings to my mind a hard and dark version of Midnight Oil's Peter Garret) put 110% into his performance. Their intense set was basically New Bermuda then an encore of the fantastic Sunbather then they finished up with Dream House. Just perfect! I went home a very happy punter.

Just saw these guys last night and wow! The energy and performance these guys gave was 110%. Seriously Deafheaven could give Shinedown a run for their money as my favorite live band. George Clarke is right up there with Brent Smith with the energy and being a great conductor in getting the audience involved. You need to see Deafheaven live! It was. A great shiw!

Fantastic show. Greg's vocals were even more soul-crushing than in the recordings, the guitar work was very good and the band were really cohesive together. One of the most emotional shows I've been to, especially as they ended with Dream House. Track wise, they played a combination of Sunbather and the latest record.

It was fucking awesome. Great setlist, probably not feasible for them to play longer than 90 minutes. Good song choices. George sounded great, great energy.

Great sound apart from a few blips with the mix and the reverb, other than that couldn't ask for more

My boyfriend and I had a very good time last night seeing Deafheaven’s concert. I am not really a fan of this kind of music, but I liked it very much indeed. It surprised me a lot and I’ll be glad to go to other Deafheaven’s exhibitions in the future:)!

Great live show. Huge sound, incredibly loud. Impressive set, featuring some of their best songs. Massive epics, great job by the band, they were in synch and put out great energy. Excellent show. Side note: Zeal and Ardor were unbelievable as openers.
