If you’re anything like me, the allure of crystal clear water and white sand beaches is too strong to resist. And, the Maldives is one of the most beautiful islands in Asia and the world!

I can’t wait for you to dive into the gorgeous waters and explore everything the Maldives offers.

With my Maldives packing list, you’ll be ready for anything – from snorkeling and swimming to sunbathing and strolling along the beach.

So, what are you waiting for? Start packing for the trip of a lifetime!

Maldives Packing List: Clothing and Accessories

When packing for the Maldives, it’s essential to consider both the climate and the activities you plan on participating in.

The Maldives is a tropical country, so it’s best to pack light, comfortable, and breathable clothing.

It’s also important to bring along accessories that will protect you from the sun and sand. After all, you don’t want to ruin the experience with a sunburn or an itchy back.

Here are my top recommendations for clothing and accessories for a packing list for the Maldives.

A sunhat belongs on every Maldives packing list!

A sunhat is a must-pack item for any Maldives packing list.

The Maldives is a tropical country, so the sun is intense year-round. You’ll want to protect your face and head from the sun’s harmful rays.

I recommend packing a sunhat with a wide brim to provide maximum coverage. You can also look for hats made with UV protection to keep your skin safe from the sun.

• Sandals/Flip-Flops

You’ll probably spend a lot of time walking along the beach and hanging out outside. Pack footwear that won’t weigh you down and allow your feet to breathe.

I recommend packing two pairs of sandals – one for walking around the resort and another pair to wear with your dinner outfits .

You should also pack a pair of flip-flops for when you’re beachside. That way, you won’t get your adorable sandals sandy and messy.

Pro Tip:  Buy a cheap pair because you’ll only wear them a few hours of the day, and you can toss them before you head back home.

Polarized sunglasses are an essential item on a Maldives packing list.

A Maldives packing list isn’t complete without a pair of sunglasses . The Maldives is located near the equator, so the sun is stronger here.

Pack a pair of high-quality sunglasses with UV protection to protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays and save yourself from squinting all day.

Pro Tip: Polarized glasses will be perfect for the Maldives since they block the glare and block the sun’s harsh rays.

• Rain Jacket

Depending on when you visit, you might need a rain jacket . If you visit during the rainy season, you’ll want to bring one.

The Maldives receive higher rainfall from May to December because of wind patterns and cooler air temperatures.

But, don’t worry – I visited during the rainy season, and it only rained for a few minutes throughout the day. It was pretty nice because it cooled down a bit.

You’ll also be fine if you decide not to pack one because your resort will probably have umbrellas. The rain jacket will be helpful for when you’re biking around the island in the rain.

Buy a cute swimsuit for your Maldives packing list so you can take beautiful photos on the beach!

Your Maldives packing list should include a swimsuit appropriate for your resort’s dress code.

If you’re staying in a resort on a private island, you probably won’t have any restrictions on what kinds of swimsuits you can wear (within reason, of course).

However, if you’re staying on the main island of Male, you’ll want to pack more modest swimwear .

The Maldives is a Muslim country, so you’ll need to dress conservatively on the mainland.

One-piece bathing suits are more comfortable for water activities like snorkeling and scuba diving, while bikinis are perfect for sunbathing.

I recommend bringing at least two pairs of swimsuits including a white swimsuit and a bright-colored suit because they’ll contrast beautifully against the turquoise waters.

• Swimsuit Coverups

In addition to swimsuits, you’ll also want to pack lightweight and comfortable coverups for when you’re not swimming or sunbathing.

I especially used my cover up when I jumped out of the ocean to grab lunch. I didn’t have to walk all the way back to my overwater bungalow to change, and I was able to walk around comfortably.

Aim for a lightweight, breezy, and stylish cover up!

• Sundresses/Rompers

A sundress like this is perfect to wear in the Maldives.

Your getaway to the Maldives wouldn’t be complete without a few sundresses and rompers .

Sundresses and rompers are perfect for wearing to breakfast, lunch, dinner, and around the resort. They’re also great for activities like island hopping and exploring.

Your resort will probably have a few casual restaurants and a couple of more upscale ones.

If you’re having dinner at an upscale restaurant, you’ll want to be dressed appropriately.

This is where maxi dresses come in handy. They look elegant and pair perfectly with sandals.

The best part is that you’ll be dressed for the part while being comfortable.

In addition to sundresses and rompers, you’ll also want some shorts to throw on.

Shorts are perfect for lounging at the beach or poolside, boat activities, and strolls around the resort.

They’re also great for biking around your resort and pack at least one pair.

• T-Shirts/Tank Tops

Tank tops and shorts make for a cute and casual outfit.

You may want to add a few t-shirts and tank tops to your Maldives packing list if you’re a tomboy like me.

Shorts and t-shirts are my favorite outfits to wear during the day on a tropical vacation when I’m not swimming.

Plus, they’re suitable for various activities you have planned and will keep you cool and comfortable.

You can even pack a nice blouse and wear it with jean shorts for an effortless and cute look.

Clothing for Male (the Capital City)

You’ll fly into the Male airport on Hulhule Island no matter where your resort is. From there, you’ll either take a seaplane or ferry to your island resort or to the local island of Male.

The Maldives isn’t an overly conservative country – but it’s important to respect their culture and traditions.

That said, you’ll need to dress conservatively when you arrive at the airport in the Maldives and around Male as well.

A long, flowy skirt or dress and a blouse with short sleeves and covers your stomach was my go to and will be perfect to wear before you arrive at your resort.

Maldives Packing List: The Basics

In addition to vacation clothes and accessories, you’ll also want to pack the basics like sunscreen, sunglasses, etc.

I’m not adding super basic items to this list like toothbrushes and body wash.

This part is more about essentials you don’t typically think about when packing for a tropical trip.

Sunscreen is an essential item to pack for any beach destination, but it’s imperative when going to the Maldives.

The Maldives has a tropical climate, and the weather is hot and humid year-round, so you’ll need sunscreen to protect your skin from getting burned.

Please pack reef-safe sunscreen! The Maldives is home to beautiful coral reefs, and non-reef-safe sunscreen will expose the reefs to harmful chemicals and hurt them.

Don’t forget to pack a suntan lotion with bronzer if you want to go home with glowing, sun-kissed skin.

Pro Tip: The sun rays can still be strong on cloudy days, so don’t forget to apply sunscreen.

Underwater Camera

You’ll want to take photos of the beautiful underwater life!

The Maldives has gorgeous turquoise waters with vivid underwater life, and you’re going to want a quality underwater camera to take pictures of it all!

Many great underwater cameras will take amazing pictures and videos, like the GoPro HERO10 or the Nikon COOLPIX W300 16MP 4k Ultra HD Waterproof Digital Camera

Don’t forget to put a drone on your Maldives packing list so you can take aerial photos like this one!

The Maldives has some of the most stunning views I’ve ever seen, and I recommend packing a drone to capture the beauty from above.

But, there are several rules and regulations you need to be aware of.

For example, you have to get approval from the Maldives National Defense Force and a permit from the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority before using your drone.

In addition, you’ll also need to double check with your hotel to see if they have a no drone policy.

Many resorts will have dry bags for you to use. If they don’t, you’ll want to bring one.

A dry bag is perfect for storing your camera, drone, and other electronics while swimming and snorkeling.

It’ll also be helpful if you make any boat trips to nearby local islands and other beaches.

If your hotel offers a dry bag, the odds are that they’ll probably provide you with a wet bag.

A wet bag is great for storing your swimsuit, towel, and other water or sand-covered items after you’ve used them.

It’s also good for keeping dirty clothes separate from your clean clothes.

• Snorkeling Gear

You’ll see so many cool fish while you’re snorkeling.

This is another item that most luxury resorts provide, so check with them beforehand.

If you want to explore the turquoise sea and its marine life, it’s a great idea to bring your own snorkeling equipment if it’s not provided.

Some of the marine life you’ll see is a variety of sharks, manta rays, parrotfish, seahorses, dolphins, and much more!

• Water Bottle

Another thing most resorts will typically provide is bottled water, and they want you to stay hydrated in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

If you’re taking day trips to neighboring local islands or staying in Male, you’ll want to bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.

A Good Book (Or Kindle)

Reading on the beach is a whole new level of relaxation.

All you’ll want to do in the Maldives is relax, snorkel and lay out on the perfect beach.

But, if you’re like me and you’re not into snorkeling too much (or you’re a total bookworm), it might be a little challenging to stay occupied.

So, why not bring a good book or your Kindle ? They’re light and easy to throw in your carry on bag.

• Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is something that everyone should have before going on their Maldivian vacation.

You never know when you might get sick or injured on your Maldives trip, and it will also cover you if your checked luggage gets lost or if there are travel delays.

Make sure you add travel insurance to your Maldives packing list because accidents happen!

The Maldives operates on 230 volts, so you’ll need to pack an adapter .

Some resorts might provide one if you ask or check beforehand, but it’s best to bring one yourself.

You’ll need one if you’re traveling from the United States.

The perfect beach bag for your Maldives packing list!

Again, most luxury resorts will provide you with a beach bag .

It’ll be perfect for carrying your sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and other travel essentials to and from the water.

You can bring your own in case you don’t like the one they provide or you already have a stylish one.

Something you might not think about adding to your Maldives packing list is cash.

The number one reason to bring cash with you is to tip the hotel staff who work tirelessly to ensure you have an amazing time beach getaway.

You can tip with US Dollars because it’s considered legal tender in the Maldives. 

Make sure you bring small notes with you if they don’t have American change to give you.

It’s best to be proactive and pack whatever medicine you might need for your Maldives vacation in case you need it.

I recommend packing Ibuprofen and Pepto Bismol, though you probably won’t need the latter.

My husband actually came down with a cold when we were there, and I didn’t pack medicine. Ooops.

We had to call the doctor on-site (so thankful there was one!), and he had to give us medicine.

Pro Tip: If you’re traveling with prescription medication, you should always carry the original prescription(s) if the customs authorities ask for proof.

• Medical Kit

You don’t have to bring a dozen things in your medical kit, but you should at least bring bandaids and gauze.

If there is an emergency, you might have to get all the way to the main island if you’re staying at a private island.

A few of the things in your medical kit might hold you over until you get treated.

For example, you never know when someone may get stung by a jellyfish or if they encounter another potential injury while swimming or lounging at the beach.

Insect Repellent

The Maldives islands are notorious for having mosquitoes because of the number of plants that grow there.

It’s not a good feeling when you’re getting bitten by mosquitoes while trying to relax, so make sure you don’t forget the bug spray .

Paradise on Earth

If you end up getting burnt from the sun or you get stung by a jellyfish, it’ll be beneficial to apply some soothing aloe vera to the burned areas of the skin.

Your passport is the most essential Maldives packing list item you’ll need!

It might sound silly, but I’m surprised by how many people forget their passports at home because they’re so excited about packing clothes and other must-haves.

Pro Tip: Make sure your passport is updated with at least six months validity.

• Passport Copies

I NEVER travel without copies of my passport. If I lose my actual passport or it gets stolen, at least I have a copy of it.

Maldives Packing List Helpful Tips

Now that we’ve covered what to pack for Maldives, let’s go over some helpful packing tips.

• If you’re going to be using a seaplane, be mindful of the luggage weight limits. Typically, you can have 5 kg of hand luggage and 20 kg of checked baggage. You’ll have to pay an extra cost per kilogram if you go over, and it can be pretty pricey. Save money on baggage fees by packing light and use it on experiences during your trip instead.
• Don’t wait until the last minute to start packing. Start a few days before you leave so you can add items that you may have forgotten or remove things that you won’t need.
• Save room in your luggage so you can bring home some souvenirs.

The biggest packing list for the Maldives tip is to be mindful of how much your luggage weighs. This is the size of standard seaplanes in the Maldives.

What Not to Pack for the Maldives

There are a few items that you shouldn’t bring on your trip, including:

• Alcohol: Remember that the Maldives is an Islamic country, and alcohol is prohibited.
• Pork products: Bringing items with pork products is strictly banned since the locals are Muslim.
• Heels: You’ll mostly be walking on sand, so heels aren’t needed.
• Too much makeup: Just pack a few basic make up items. The humidity will make your makeup run.
• Hairdryer and hair straightener: The hotel room will probably have a blowdryer, and it’s near impossible to have a great hair day because of the humidity.
• Warm clothes: You definitely won’t need warm clothing on your trip since you’re going to a tropical destination.

Must-Haves for the Maldives: The Ultimate Packing Guide

So you’re heading to the Maldives, hey? Lucky you! The Maldives are regularly voted the best holiday destination in the world, and are one of the most famous honeymoon hotspots around – so you made a pretty good choice. You’ve probably carefully chosen your Maldives resort, booked your flights (and maybe that seaplane ride too), have Googled the weather on a daily basis, and now there is nothing left to do but pack.

Packing for the Maldives should be taken seriously, after all, you’ll most likely be staying on a very remote island where it can be tough to pick up replacements should you leave your favourite pair of sandals at home or forget to bring the GoPro. But fear not, we’ve put together the ultimate guide to packing for you vacation in the Maldives, so you can rest assured that nothing will be left behind.

Casual and Chic Clothing

The Maldives enjoy a lovely, warm climate all year round, with balmy evenings, and some scorching days. For this reason, it’s wise to pack a range of loose, cooling and light garments that you can convert from day to night. Think gorgeous white kaftans, sleek sarongs and oversized tees that you can wear to the beach or jazz-up with some accessories for a glam night. There will be lots of swimming and lounging by the pool, so bring a nice selection of your favourite bikinis, as well as cover ups and tropical playsuits for some serious chill time. Gymwear is a good idea as most resorts have a fully stocked fitness centre, as well as a range of classes, such as yoga, on offer. Note, these classes can often be held outside in open-air pavilions, so you may want to opt for shorts and a crop top as opposed to long yoga pants and sleeved tops that you may wear back home.

Dinners can be dressy, so bring some flowing maxi dresses, or even an island-chic cocktail dress or two for when you really want to go all out. As for shoes, many resorts have a ‘no shoes, no news’ policy’. That means that you can take your shoes off from the second you step off the seaplane, and don’t have to put them on again until you leave. Other resorts will require footwear in the restaurants, so make sure that you double check before you leave. Forget about most pairs of heels, as they will most likely get damaged by the sand or stuck in the gaps in the wooden jetty. If you can’t live without heels on your vacation, then opt for a pair of wedges.

Men have it a little easier; Think crisp white cotton tees, and a range of swim shorts, and perhaps some smart, logger pants for the evenings (just make sure that they are cool and breathable). A light sweater or two is always a good idea in case you get a slightly cool breeze one night.

If you plan on doing a lot of snorkeling or water based activities then a rash vest is a very good idea indeed. It will help to protect you from the rays of the sun, and prevent some nasty sunburn. Choose one with very high sun protection and you will be good to go.

If your vacation includes a visit to one of the local Island then it’s worth noting that you should dress modestly when wandering around these areas. It’s advised that you were very conservative clothing and cover up most of your body.

All About the Accessories

A savvy packer knows it’s all about the accessories, particularly when at an exclusive island resort in the Maldives. Pack wisely and you will be able to transform those daytime outfits into nighttime beauties with just a few accessories and a dash of lipstick. Ladies pack your favorite statement pieces like dangling earrings, bejeweled necklaces, grecian arm cuffs, and cute anklets. Also stock up on hair accessories. Sometimes, hair can get a little wild in the humidity, so pack some cute hair clips or hair bands to disguise unruly locks. These accessories will all come in handy and you can have a little fun dressing up on your paradise island.

And let’s not forget the sunnies. We suggest bringing a couple of pairs, just in case you sit on one or they happen to go missing or get dropped in the ocean while on a boat trip (it happens). Make sure that they have a high UV protection rating. Hats are fabulous and will add to your resort-chic look while also protecting your face from the sun. Leave your watch at home, you will be running on island time!

Thoughtful Toiletries

When it comes to packing your toiletries it always pays to be eco-conscious with what to bring. The Maldives have a very delicate ecosystem which can be heavily damaged by chemicals from the products that you are using. So, if possible, always choose to take natural products which are green and eco-friendly. There are a whole range of wonderful companies that offer plant-based products – check out Weleda and Neal’s yard for some ideas. So if you can, try and take natural shampoos and conditioners.

The same applies for sunscreen: you will need to bring some high-quality sunscreen, but did you know that traditional sun cream full of chemicals that leave a toxic layer on the ocean that can affect marine life. Hawaii has actually become the first US state to ban sun cream which contains two chemicals that’s a particularly well-known for harming the ocean. So do a little research and choose to invest in a natural sunscreen that offers protection as well as a blend of natural ingredients that wouldn’t be dumping chemicals in the sea.

Also, you may need to bring some insects repellent with you. The same applies all mosquito repellent as sun cream – ditch the Deet-Laden version and go for a more natural product. Your skin and the environment will thank you for it. A good option to choose is DoTerra Terrashield, which is a blend of natural essential oils that smells great and works well.

Coconut oil is always a great thing to bring you with you just because it is so versatile. You can use it to smooth down flyaway hair, you can use it as a body lotion a moisturizer, and it even helps to nourish your nails. Regular coconut oil application after you get home will also help to prolong your tan.

Gadgets and Gizmos

The Maldives beside visually stunning that you may want to take the proper gear to capture it with. Of course smartphones will do the trick. But you if you have any sort of camera, you’ll be sure to be putting it to use while on your Paradise vacation. A DSLR camera is a great option, and there’s no better place than the Maldives to test out your photography skills. GoPros will also get much use, and they are fantastic for taking on snorkeling and diving trips. Make sure that you bring with you an adapter to plug in your electronics. T he electricity supply in the Maldives is 220V to 240V, 50Hz AC. The standard socket is the UK-style three-pin, although there are some variations, so an international adaptor can be useful.

Almost all of the resorts will have some form of watersports center where you can hire snorkels, flippers and other sea-related equipment to explore the ocean with.

For the Journey

Chances are you will probably be traveling for quite some time in order to get to the Maldives. First you’ll have to fly to the Maldives International Airport and then take a seaplane or ferry to get to your resort. So it’s a wise idea to make sure you are well prepared for the long-haul travel. Take a few snacks with you that you can take on the plane like dried fruits and nuts, bring a couple of books or magazines and stock-up your phone with new music, podcasts, audiobooks and the likes.

You will have a lot of time to rest, relax and even reflect at your stunning hotel on the island, so you may want to bring along a journal. Quite often, time on the islands away from the madness and business of everyday life can gift you with insights and inspiration. So a journal or notebook is a lovely way to capture ideas on paper and review when you get back home. It always pays to be prepared with your travel documents when you go away. So take a plastic wallet and fill it with your itinerary including flights, sea plane tickets if you have them, and use it to store your passport and other documents. Make sure you have your travel insurance sorted too, and store a printed version with contact details in your wallet too.

What Not to Pack for the Maldives

It’s worth mentioning that it’s illegal to bring any sort of alcohol into the Maldives. They do actually have a special area in arrivals where they will scan your luggage to check that you are not bringing any in with you. Don’t worry though, if you’re staying in a big resort, they will most likely have a huge selection of alcoholic drinks to choose from including fine wine, champagnes, and local and international spirits. It’s also actually illegal to bring any items that are considered to be contrary to Islam, including like other religious texts such as the Bible, as well as any pork products, so be mindful of this when you are packing for your trip.

Another thing to think about is the weight of your luggage, so always double-check and see what limits you have. Normally you will only be allowed to take up to 20 or 25 kilos of luggage because the seaplanes have a low late weight limit. This can be changed, but you may be required to let them know in advance and often pay a high fee for the privilege. If you’re traveling by speedboat then often these weight restrictions on your luggage will not apply.

Shopping in the Maldives

Shopping options are probably going to be limited when you arrive on your resort, but this does depend on where you stay. Some of the bigger and more luxurious resorts, such as the One and Only Reethi Rah do have a number of shopping options, including designer boutiques which are filled with all sorts of high-end clothes shoes and accessories with high-end price tags.

Most resorts also have some form of convenience store where you can pick up items such as toiletries, sun cream and basic medicines (headache tablets etc) should you need them. However, just be prepared to pay sky high rates for items as import rates are incredibly high in the Maldives, and of course all items have to be shipped in, so it’s always wise to double-check you have everything you need before you leave.

If you remember that you have forgotten to pack something while on your plane on the way there, then you may be able to pick something up from  Velena International Aiport when you land. There are a few simple stores located within Male International Airport. If you’re planning on staying on the main island in male for a night, then there are also a few shopping options to be had including cute bazaars, markets and an area called t he Majeedhee Magu  where you can pick up handcrafted souvenirs and clothing.

Follow these suggestions and you’ll be be packing like a pro in no time. Take a decent selection of clothes, accessories, toiletries, your electronic items and a good book or two and you’ll be all set to go. The Maldives! Just the name conjures up images of turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and luxurious overwater bungalows. Trust me, it's every bit as magical as it sounds. I recently spent a week exploring this tropical paradise, and let me tell you, it was pure bliss. A good quality sunscreen would come really handy while you are relaxing on the sunbed or enjoying an adventurous water activity. Sun Bum is my most preferred and favorite water resistant moisturizing sunscreen that I always carry to such sunny destinations.

Carry a sun hat having a good coverage to protect yourself from the harmful UV rays. Don’t make the mistake of buying it from the local stores in Maldives because you would find it very expensive there and even less worthy in terms of sun protection. The Furtalk Wide Brim Straw hat has adjustable bands, is very comfortable, pack-able and looks stylish too. You could crush it and easily settle it into your carry on bag.

3. Sun Glasses

Wet bags come handy when you need to carry your wet clothes, towels and muddy slippers back to your resort. When you are traveling to any tropical destination, you need to pack a mosquito repellent for yourselves to stay safe from mosquito/bug bites. Try mosquito repellent patches or bracelets instead of sprays. They work wonders for both kids and adults.

Pack multiple pairs of swim suits depending on the days you are going to spend on the beaches of Maldives. I would suggest taking bright colored or tropical printed bikinis with you for picture perfect shots besides the turquoise sea. Men would be sorted with a few pairs of swim trunks and shorts .

I love to pack Kaftans as beach cover ups whenever I am on a tropical vacation. They keep me covered up from the sun after I come out from the sea. There’s no hurry to change my swimwear and I could just walk around in it comfortably even to the dine in area of the resort.

Maldives look amazing, dreaming of visiting there one day. The packing list is great – how many times have I forgotten to pack a hat! I would maybe also include a UV-shirt if doing lots of watersports.

Another location on my travel list to experience. So beautiful. Who takes heels to a beach resort? Lol

Maldives Packing List: What to Pack for Maldives Holiday

So you have finally decided to go on a dream trip to the Maldives! But you wonder what to pack for the Maldives trip to make the most of your beachy vacay?

In this ultimate Maldives packing list for all seasons, you’ll have a checklist of essentials, toiletries, and clothing for men, women, and kids.

I’ll also talk about a few things you can skip and not bring on your trip to the island nation.

Note: The list does not contain required documents, such as visas, tickets, passport copies, vaccine cards, and PCR test certificates, if necessary.

The Ultimate Maldives Packing Checklist (2023)

Essential packing list: what to pack for maldives trip.

These are essentials that you should not forget. But remember, skip the things to bring to the Maldives if you think they won’t be needed.

1/ Cash in Hand

The Maldives is a country that still uses a lot of cash, so it’s important to have some on hand in case you need it. 

You can use cash at grocery stores, restaurants, and local markets. Many shopkeepers in the Maldives requested payment in cash rather than a card when I was there.

2/ Insect Repellent

Maldives hotels and resorts regularly fumigate to keep mosquitoes at bay, but bringing your own repellent is always a good idea.

I used this mosquito repellent with DEET, and no bites during my stay! Don’t forget such things to bring to Maldives.

3/ Basic Medication

Thankfully, my wife believes that everyone must take basic medication on a trip, just in case. 

So don’t forget to pack 

• Travelers’ diarrhea antibiotic.
• Painkillers and cough syrup. 
• Altitude sickness medicine.

Let me share other medical supplies you can consider taking

• Suture kit.
• Contact lenses.
• Medicated glasses.
• Epinephrine auto-injectors.
• Needles or syringes.
• And other things like a medical necklace.

Don’t ever forget to check the Maldives travel advisory when traveling to the country.

4/ Travel Insurance for the Maldives

One thing that’s often overlooked is travel insurance. But it’s essential for any trip, especially to a place like the Maldives surrounded by the sea. 

If something happens and you need to be evacuated from the country, your travel insurance will help cover the costs.

So before booking your trip to the Maldives, ensure travel insurance is in place. It could save you a lot of money and hassle down the road.

5/ International Adapter

Maldives uses type D and G plugs and sockets. And the standard voltage is 230 V, and the standard frequency is 50 Hz. 

But you may need a power adapter to use your electronics.

I neglected to bring one, so my phone and laptop were unable to charge until the hotel staff found one for me.

If you forget your adapter, you can buy one at the airport or in local stores, but they are more expensive there.

So save yourself some money and hassle by packing an international adapter in your suitcase.

An international adapter will work in the Maldives and many other countries, so it’s a good investment for travel.

6/ Windproof Travel Umbrella

The Maldives is a tropical country, so it rains frequently. I was there at the start of November, and it rained only once during my trip.

But you still need a windproof umbrella to protect you from the sun if not rain.

I brought a cheap umbrella, and the strong wind broke it as soon as I opened it. Thankfully, I got another from my hotel.

So I recommend packing a windproof travel umbrella in your suitcase. It will come in handy if you get caught in a rainstorm or need shade from the sun.

7/ Condoms and Contraceptives

There are a few reasons why it’s a good idea to bring condoms and contraceptives with you when traveling to the Maldives.

Contraception is only available on prescription here, and that too if you are married! 

Condoms , on the other hand, are available over the counter in Malé, but they can be expensive. If you bring your own, you can save yourself some money.

8/ Water Bottle

The Maldives is where you’ll spend a lot of time in the sun. So it’s important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

I recommend packing a reusable water bottle to fill it up at the hotel or resort. However, you’ll need to buy water since tap water is not drinkable.

9/ Beach Bag

The Maldives is an island nation, so you’ll spend a lot of time at the beach. It’s important to pack a beach bag to carry all your things. 

So pack a tote bag or backpack big enough to fit everything you need, like your towel, sunscreen, water bottle, hat, and more.

10/ Sunblock with SPF 30+

Sunblock is an important item to pack when traveling to places like the Maldives, as the country is close to the equator.

The sun is much stronger in the region, so it’s important to protect your skin with sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Ensure to reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming or sweating. And pack enough for your entire trip.

11/ Sun Hat

When traveling to the Maldives, don’t forget to pack a sun hat to protect your head and face from the intense sun. 

A sun hat will also help keep you cool in the hot climate. Bring one comfortable and fits well, so you can enjoy your vacation without worrying about your head.

12/ Sun Glasses

The Maldives is known for its beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters, but it can also be quite sunny. 

A pair of sunglasses will help protect your eyes from the sun’s rays and help you enjoy your stay in the Maldives even more.

13/ Dry & Wet Bags

One of the important items to bring to places like the Maldives are wet and dry bags. A dry bag protects your belongings from getting wet. 

And a wet bag stores wet clothes or other items that must be kept separate from the rest of your luggage. These bags are essential for keeping your belongings safe and dry during your trip.

14/ Traditional Book or Kindle

You’ll have plenty of time in the Maldives to relax on the beach or by the pool. So it’s a good idea to pack a traditional book or Kindle to enjoy during your downtime.

I recommend packing a book you’ve wanted to read but haven’t had the time. The Maldives is the perfect place to catch up on your reading list.

15/ Drone, Underwater Camera & Other Accessories

If you’re a photography enthusiast, you’ll want to pack your drone and other camera equipment. The Maldives is an incredibly photogenic country with plenty of photo opportunities.

And if you love taking underwater photos or videos, don’t forget to pack an underwater camera or housing for your DSLR.

The tourism company gave me drone footage for jet skiing, fun tubing, and kayaking. They also gave me underwater photos and videos when I was snorkeling. So take a drone, underwater camera, and other accessories if you want more!

16/ Snorkeling Gear

All the tour companies in the Maldives will have snorkeling gear available for you to use. You’ll need to bring your gear if you want to explore more areas while snorkeling.

The Maldives has some of the best snorkeling spots in the world, so it’s worth bringing your gear. I recommend packing a full-face snorkel mask, fins, and a snorkel. 

These items will help you enjoy your Maldives snorkeling experience to the fullest.

17/ Power Bank

Another important item to pack for the Maldives is a power bank. The Maldives is a remote destination with limited access to electricity.

So it’s important to bring a power bank to charge your devices.

I recommend bringing a power bank with at least 10,000 mAh. This will be enough to charge your phone and other devices multiple times.

CLOTHING Packing List: What to Wear in the Maldives

In this section, you’ll know what you should wear in the Maldives, whether you’re going on a liveaboard trip or staying in a resort or hotel.

18/ Rain Jacket

The Maldives is tropical, so it’s likely to rain during your visit. That’s why it’s important to pack a rain jacket to stay dry.

It rains a lot from May to October in the Maldives . So pack a lightweight rain jacket that’s easy to carry around. This way, you can keep it in your backpack and pull it out when it rains.

19/ Quick Dry Travel Towel

Bringing a quick dry travel towel to the Maldives will come in handy for various activities. It’s perfect for swimming and snorkeling, as it will quickly soak up any water and help you stay dry.

You can also use it as a beach towel or for drying off after a shower. And you’ll enjoy all the activities available without worrying about getting wet.

20/ Footwear: Sandals, Water Shoes, Flip Flops & Dive Shoes

When packing for a Maldives trip, it’s important to bring along the right footwear. Sandals, water shoes, flip-flops, and dive shoes are all great options for exploring the islands.

But don’t pack too many shoes, as you won’t need them. One pair of sandals, water shoes, and flip-flops should be enough.

A pair of heels is a big no-no in the Maldives, as you’ll spend most of your time outdoors.

Sandals are perfect for strolling along the beach or walking around town. They’re also great for wearing when cooling your feet off in the water.

Water shoes are ideal for swimming and snorkeling, as they protect from sharp rocks and other objects that can cause injuries.

Flip-flops are perfect for wearing in the hotel room or on the beach, and they’re also a great option for taking on excursions when you don’t want to wear your hiking shoes.

Dive shoes are best to bring to the Maldives if you plan to go diving. They protect slippery surfaces and sharp objects underwater.

All of these types of footwear are lightweight and take up minimal space in your luggage, so there’s no reason not to bring them along on your Maldives vacation!

21/ Bikini and Swimwear

The Maldives is a tropical country, and you’ll want to spend as much time as possible in the water. There are plenty of beaches and swimming areas where you can take a dip, so don’t forget to pack your bikini and swimwear!

22/ Swimsuit Coverups

Swimsuit coverups are a must-have for any island vacation. The weather is hot and humid all year round in the Maldives, so it’s important to have something to cover up with when you’re not in the water.

Swimsuit coverups also protect from the sun’s UV rays, which can be strong in the Maldives. There are various options, so you can find one that best suits your style.

Sarongs are a popular choice, as they are versatile and can be worn in many different ways.

Many stylish beach coverups are also available, such as kimonos and ponchos. Whatever you choose, ensure it’s comfortable and provides adequate coverage.

23/ Sundresses

Sundresses are essential to any Maldives clothing packing list, so don’t forget to bring one along on your trip!

They’re perfect for the Maldives’ tropical climate and provide many comforts when touring the islands.

In addition to being comfortable, sundresses are versatile and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Also, they don’t take up much space in your luggage.

24/ Rompers

When packing for a trip to the Maldives, you’ll want to pack clothes that will keep you cool and comfortable in the tropical climate.

Rompers are a great option, as they are airy and lightweight. You can also wear them as a casual day outfit and a more dressy evening look.

If you’re looking for something versatile and stylish for your vacation, pack a few rompers!

25/ Shorts & Boxers

Shorts, boxers, and briefs can be useful when the temperature dips at night or during a rainstorm.

Plus, they’re lightweight and take up very little space in your suitcase, so they’re perfect for packing on a trip to the Maldives islands.

26/ Kaftans or Cover Ups

The Maldives is a tropical country, so you’ll want to bring light clothes that keep you cool in the heat. A kaftan or coverup is a perfect item to pack for the Maldives.

Kaftans and coverups are loose-fitting, flowing garments that are perfect for hot weather. They provide plenty of coverage from the sun, and they can be worn as a dress, shirt, or skirt.

They’re also comfortable and roomy, which makes them ideal for tropical climates.

A kaftan or coverup is a must-have item if you spend time on the beach or by the pool. They’ll keep you cool and protect you from the sun’s rays.

So pack a kaftan or coverup, and you’ll be glad you did!

27/ Summer Dresses Like Maxi

A great option for hot weather is a summer dress like a maxi dress. Maxi dresses are loose-fitting and cover your entire body, which makes them perfect for tropical climates.

They also come in various styles and colors, so you can find one that fits your personality. Add a blazer and some accessories if you want to dress it up.

28/ T-Shirts & Hoodies

A t-shirt and hoodies are yet another choice for hot weather, and packing them for your Maldives trip has many benefits.

T-shirts and hoodies are versatile and can be worn in various settings. They are also lightweight and take up minimal space in your luggage.

This makes them perfect for packing on a crowded flight or taking a day trip with you.

Whether spending a day at the beach or exploring the city, a t-shirt or a hoodie is a great option for any activity.

So if you’re looking for an easy and affordable way to pack some extra clothing for your Maldives trip, consider bringing some t-shirts and hoodies.

29/ Tank Tops

Tank tops provide a lot of coverage and sun protection. They’re also versatile, meaning you can wear them in various settings – from the beach to the pool to the city.

So if you’re looking for a piece of clothing that keeps you cool and comfortable during your Maldives vacation, pack some tank tops! But don’t forget to apply sun cream as well!

30/ Wetsuit or Rash Guard

A wetsuit or rash guard is a must for ​the Maldives surf trip packing list. And it’s not just surfing; you need it for any water activity during your tour.

Wetsuits and rash guards protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. They also provide warmth if you get cold while swimming, diving, or surfing.

31/ Clothing For Male, The Capital City Of Maldives

In Male, the dress code for men is smart casual. This means you should pack shirts with sleeves, collars, chinos, or tailored trousers.

You may also want to pack some tailored shorts that reach the knee.

While for women, the dress code is slightly more relaxed. You can wear skirts and capris, but avoid wearing anything too short or revealing.

TOILETRIES Packing List for Maldives Vacation

Always remember the TSA 3-1-1 rule for packing your toiletries when traveling by air. This means you can bring travel-size containers that hold 3.4 ounces or less per item.

And all of those containers must fit in a single, clear, quart-sized bag.

You’re also allowed one bag per passenger.

I have already suggested you bring sunscreen, Deet-containing insect repellent, and a towel.

But there are other essential toiletries that you can pack for your Maldives trip:

• Hand sanitizer
• Razor and grooming kit
• Toothpaste and toothbrush
• Feminine hygiene products
• Travel-size shampoo, conditioner, and body soap

Things like shampoo or soap are generally available at hotels, so we left those items at home. However, I brought deodorant, and my wife packed her makeup.

What to Pack for Your KIDS in the Maldives

You’ll want to pack these items if you’re heading to the Maldives with your little ones. Of course, don’t go for all of them.

• Lightweight and refreshing clothes.
• Sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses.
• Water bottles, snacks, milk, and drinks.
• Gum or candy to help relieve the pressure.
• Pack some diapers and wipes (for infants or toddlers)
• Swimwear and beachy toys so kids can enjoy the beaches.
• Kids’ books, drawing paper, crayons, and some card games.

With these traveling essentials packed, you can enjoy an amazing holiday with your kids in the Maldives.

What You Can Skip for Maldives Trip

If you’re visiting the Maldives, there’s a good chance you’re planning to spend a lot of time in the water. So, you can probably skip packing things like shampoo and soap .

These items are complimentary at the hotel or resort.

If you want to go snorkeling or do other water activities, but only once during your trip and with a guided tour, don’t worry about bringing any gear.

The tour operators will take care of everything for you.

They will also offer underwater photos and videos and drone footage when jet-skiing, kayaking, and other activities.

And that too for an amazing price of around $30-$50 per activity.

So only bring underwater cameras from GoPro or drone cameras if you’re planning to do a lot of diving or snorkeling yourself.

Also, check to see whether the hotel or resort provides you with an umbrella . You may save room in your luggage by leaving them at home if they do.

The general rule is that you should not bring all the 50 items I have enlisted here. Just bring what you need and leave the rest at home. 

Let me share a few things you should never add to your Maldives packing list.

What NOT to Bring To the Maldives at All

When packing for your Maldives vacation, it’s important to know what items you should bring with you and what you MUST leave behind.

Have a look at things you should never pack for your trip to the Maldives:

• Computer or laptop (I took mine without any problem anyway)
• Alcohol, pork, and its by-products (the Maldives is a Muslim country)
• Hair dryer or straighter (available in the hotel room)
• Large and bulky items (such as snorkeling gear)
• Warm clothes, heels, or stilettos (you’ll never need ’em)

Also, avoid heavy clothing that will make you feel weighed down in the tropical heat, expensive jewelry thieves could target you, and more.

What to Pack for Maldives?

The Maldives isn’t just another beach location, but one of a unique type that can be enjoyed in two ways: as a luxury traveller opting to stay at a resort or as a budget traveller choosing to stay at local islands. Your Maldives packing list will be determined by the type of travel you choose between the two because the environments in both will be completely different. So, let us get going and answer the question of the day.

What to Pack for Maldives Resort Stay

1. swimwear.

Needless to say, you’ll need swimwear at a beach location. We recommend carrying at least two pairs. If you’re going to be taking a lot of pictures (which you are!) or staying for more than 3–4 days, then maybe even three. Bright-coloured bikinis and two-piece swimsuits that can be mixed and matched and contrast beautifully with the ocean are the best options. Though, in all honesty, I have a soft spot for one-pieces.

I carried this beautiful CupShe swimsuit that I had such a tough time choosing because all their swimsuits are so pretty.

Guys can carry two  swimming shorts . It should suffice no matter the length of stay.

2. Sarong and/or Cover-Up

Sarongs are a multi-purpose garment that you should have on you no matter what kind of trip you’re on. They can be used to cover-up, as a beach blanket or towel, to provide warmth, etc. The Maldives is also obviously the right place to don some pretty  cover-ups  too. So, carry either or both.

3. Day and Evening Wear

Carry light, breathable, flowy summer dresses, skirts, and shorts that can be worn over swimwear. It’s great to always be equipped to head into the ocean, isn’t it?

For evenings, think around the lines of colourful flowing maxi dresses. Carry at least one.

Carry sports clothes in case you want to go for a beachside run or hit the gym!

Men can pair printed shirts with solid-colored coloured-shorts or vice versa.

4. Sunblock with SPF 30+

Long periods of exposure to the sun can leave you susceptible to sunburn, especially in a country that is so close to the Equator. Remember, you can get sunburned not only at the beach or boat but also in your water villa because water reflects the rays of the sun. Also, clouds don’t protect you from sun rays so be sure to apply sunscreen first thing in the morning on a hot, sunny day or a cloudy one.

Most importantly, ensure that your sunscreen is:

• Water-resistant : So, it stays on your skin and doesn’t bleed into the water. It is better for you and the reef.
• Reef-safe : Certain chemicals in sunscreen can harm or even kill the coral reef. So much so that sunscreen containing these chemicals has been banned in certain countries.  Read this article to know more. Know that sunscreens labelled “reef-safe” or “reef-friendly” may not actually be reef-safe. The list of chemicals below will help you check if your usual sunscreen is good to go or if you need to buy one that is reef-safe. It is best to buy physical sunscreens (mineral sunblock) with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that are ‘non-nano’. If they are below 100 nanometers, the creams can be ingested by corals and are not reef-safe.

Therefore, you shouldn’t carry sunscreen that has the following chemicals: oxybenzone, parabens, octinoxate (ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate), 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4MBC), triclosan, nanoparticles, including zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), and octocrylene. Octocrylene below 10% has been labelled safe and is mostly used in reef-friendly sunscreens.

5. Broad-Brimmed Sun Hat

It is super essential to protect your face, eyes, and hair from the sun. Sunscreen is one thing, but it’s better to take all precautions to keep the sun’s harmful rays away by wearing a broad-brimmed hat. Baseball or visor caps will also do well but just ensure they’re tight enough so they don’t fly away with the wind. Speaking from experience, oops!

6. Sunglasses

I know you already know this, so I’m not going to stress on it much, but just tell you that sunglasses are a given on a beach trip -not only to protect from the sun’s harmful rays but also to prevent the brightness of the sun from blinding you (albeit temporarily). Polarized sunglasses are undoubtedly the best!

7. Flip-Flops and Sandals

You can walk nearly everywhere without shoes in the Maldives. No one will ask you to put them on. However, carry at least one pair of comfortable flip-flops to walk around the island and one pair of nicer sandals to go with your pretty evening dresses.

8. Snorkelling Gear

At resorts, you will either get snorkel gear complimentary or have to pay a daily rental fee. Or if you don’t like sharing, then you can carry your own.

On our Maldives trip, Modi snorkelled for the first time and had a huge issue with the gear because snorkelling does take time to get used to. You can only breathe from your mouth and if at all you breathe from your nose, your mask will fog up. Also, water kept getting in his mouth and nose.

So, we now travel with our own snorkel mask, which is super convenient because you can breathe from your mouth or nose without a second thought.  Here is an example of what I’m talking about . However, instead of buying this online, I would suggest visiting a Decathlon store to purchase a mask that fits your face well.

9. An International Adaptor

In the Maldives, the power plugs and sockets are of type D (three round pins in a triangular pattern) or G (three rectangular pins in a triangular pattern). The standard   voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.

Most resorts provide you with an international adaptor. However, carry your own in case your resort doesn’t give you one, or you need to plug in more gadgets than one adaptor can accommodate.

10. Underwater Camera and Accessories

If you’re going snorkelling or diving, you’ll want an underwater camera to capture the beauty of marine life. Here are a few options for ways you could capture underwater life.

• Plastic Phone Cover : This is useful only if you are going to the beach. Do not use it for snorkelling because it can really be annoying to use and for diving, it’ll not be possible to use.
• Underwater Phone Housing : This is a really cool device. Just ensure that the one you purchase fits your phone.
• Go Pro : The best option hands down but also the most costly.

Get  waterproof housing to protect your GoPro from the elements. Also, get a red filter if you’re going to be diving so that the colours look natural. 

Attach your GoPro to a  head-mount or chest-mount  for hands-free time in the water. This is a must, especially for weak swimmers. 

A floaty will be essential in case you’re holding the GoPro in your hand while in the ocean or on a boat. In the event of the GoPro accidentally slipping from your hand, it’ll ensure the GoPro floats so you can easily recover it .

A GoPro Dome Port helps get beautiful photos and videos which composed of half land and half water. Here is an example .

If you’re using a GoPro for the first time, it might be helpful to get the entire accessories kit .

If you’re a photography and videography enthusiast, then undoubtedly you would like to take your drone with you. We too were looking forward to flying our drone to get beautiful shots of the Maldives islands but unfortunately, it wasn’t allowed on the property. In fact, when researching resorts, we noted that most properties have a no-drone policy to maintain the privacy of their guests. So do check this on the booking website or directly with your resort.

I don’t think you should have issues flying drones on local islands or sandbanks. 

12. Medication

Carry all your basic medicine and first aid, as you’ll be on an island with limited medical facilities. Most importantly, do not forget to carry a seasickness remedy if you’re going to be on a boat at any point in time. Nausea Relief Bands don’t work on me, but they might on you.  I use anti-sickness pills instead (Emeset works like a charm).

Hydrocortisone creams are a must-have as they help with rashes, itchiness, insect bites, swelling, and redness.

Aloevera gel is good to have if you get sunburned easily.

Oh, and do not travel without bandaids for the odd scrapes and cuts.

13. Insect Repellent

Unfortunately, tropical countries have an insect problem, as these bugs thrive in hot, humid conditions. Keep a good (preferably natural) insect repellent to keep the pesky little things from irritating you on a trip meant for relaxation.

The Maldives is an expensive country. So if you feel pangs of hunger at odd hours of the day or night, or need a substitute for meals to save money, then carrying snacks is a must.

We were on a half-board plan (lunch wasn’t included) at our resort, so we ate Theplas, Instant Ramen (Koka and Shin Ramyun), some  The Whole Truth Protein Bars and our favourite unhealthy items for dessert like Pocky and After Eight . Guilty!

15. Wet Bag

Instead of carrying plastic bags that harm the environment, carry a wet bag like this one to keep your wet clothes and swimsuits separately.

16. Waterproof Portable Speakers

You should be listening to the sound of the ocean, but if you can’t live without music, then carrying a light-weight waterproof portable speaker will be worthwhile.

17. Modest Clothing

I would recommend you carry one pair of modest clothing in case you plan to do a tour of a local island from your resort or if you plan to visit Male. The clothing should cover your shoulders and knees.

What to Pack for Maldives: Local Island Stay

Life is different on the islands inhabited by locals as there are some rules to adhere to. Since, Maldives is a Muslim country, there is a strict dress code on the islands while the resort islands are allowed to function in their own bubble to cater to international tourists. 

Hence, your day clothes and things to carry will be slightly different than what is needed for a luxury resort stay. You will need all the items mentioned for resort stay plus the ones mentioned below.

1. Modest Swim Wear

Women need to have their shoulders, knees and mid-riff covered at all times, except at bikini beaches on local islands. Not all islands even have bikini beaches, so make sure you check. You will be expected to get into the ocean in half-sleeve t-shirts and pants at all other beaches or instead, you can go for a full- or half-sleeve swimsuit with leggings or capris . You can only wear regular swimsuits when going snorkelling, diving, or visiting sandbanks. 

Men are also expected to follow the same rules. However, the rules are a bit relaxed for men, so shirts/t-shirts can be taken off when going into the water.

2. Modest Daywear

Be prepared to cover up. Think airy shirts, knotted tops (covering the midriff), light flowy maxi skirts and sarongs, or flowy cotton pants.

3. Beach Bag

A beach bag (even a dry bag or backpack will do) will be needed to carry your belongings around your island. You can use the same bag as your carry-on personal item on the flight.

If you’re going to be going diving, a dry bag will keep your electronics, money, and other essentials dry. The Waterseals Bag is not only waterproof but also has a number lock, so you can leave your bag strapped to a pole, railing, or any fixture without worrying about theft.

Carry a towel to take to the beaches, sandbanks, and boats. Microfiber ones  are light, compact, and dry quickly. We always carry one, no matter where we go.

4. Rain Jacket

This isn’t necessary to carry, even if you are staying on a local island. However, if you really despise getting drenched in the rain, this one’s a must because the weather in the Maldives is quite fickle.

5. Toiletries and Kit

When staying at resorts, you can afford to skip the shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, and a few other items since these are provided by the resorts. You may also choose to carry these items if you’re particular. However, if you’re staying on the local islands, you’ll need toiletries and a travel kit, as you can’t be sure if these will be provided and what quality they will be.

What Not to Pack for Maldives

Here are some items that you should competely avoid for your Maldives trip whether you’re staying at a resort or a local island.

• Alcohol, Bible, Idols for Worship, Pork Products : All of these items are contrary to the beliefs of Islam and not allowed in the country. While you are at the resort, you will be able to have alcohol so best not to carry it anyway. For a list of items not allowed in and out of Maldives,  read here .
• Warm Clothes : Maldives has hot and humid tropical weather year round. So it does not make any sense to bring any warm clothes since there will be absolutely no need for them even on windy, cloudy and rainy days. However, you might need a light jacket for your international flight.
• Excessive Makeup : Just carry really light and basic makeup if at all. The humid weather in the Maldives is not ideal to wear a full-face of makeup and neither is it necessary. Maldives has a very laid back vibe.
• Heels : You will be able to survive your entire Maldives trips on a pair of flipflops or maybe even a nice sandal for the evening but nothing more than that. The walkways to the hotels/rooms islands are strewn with sand (even the resorts) and the walkways to the overwater villas are made with slabs of wood with holes between them. So neither is the ideal surface for heels. Since the resorts have a laid back vibe, you can even go the whole day without wearing any shoes at all.
• Jewellery: Again, going with the whole laid back vibe of the islands, you should carry any expensive jewellery.
• Excessive Cash : You do not need to carry a lot of cash if you’re staying at a resort. It might be beneficial to have a few US dollars on you for your final tip to your butler (though it is not necessary) and pay at stores in your island resort. But if you’re staying at the local islands, do carry USD for your trip and cards may not be accepted everywhere.
• Luggage : It is best not to carry over 20kgs of luggage as you might have to pay charges for excess baggage if taking sea planes. Please check the luggage policy for your hotel transfer.

The country has a very chilled-out vibe, as is the case for most beach locations. Just ensure you pack based on where you’re staying. But before you dive into your blissful retreat, we’ve got everything you need to pack with our Ultimate Maldives Packing List .

What to know about Maldives weather

As you envision your days in the Maldives, you probably imagine a world where the sun reigns supreme, painting the sky in hues of endless blue. The Maldives is graced with a tropical monsoon climate . This means nature divides the year into two dominant seasons: the dry season, known as ‘Iruvai’, and the wet season, or ‘Hulhangu’.

During the dry season , from December to April, the islands bask in the glory of clear skies and gentle sea breezes with temperatures averaging around 29°C (84°F). 

Come May, the Maldives welcomes the wet season . This period is characterised by more frequent showers and slightly warmer, more humid temperatures hovering around 31°C (88°F). 

While the thought of rain might seem daunting, it’s often a brief, refreshing interlude in an otherwise sunny day. Extreme weather in the Maldives is rare, so to have consecutive days of pouring rain would be incredibly unlucky. However, even the dry season can see some rainy days.

The things you shouldn’t add to your Maldives Packing List

When packing for a Maldives honeymoon, it’s just as important to know what to leave behind as it is to know what to bring. 

If you’re taking a seaplane transfer, there are some limits on luggage . The luggage allowance on a seaplane is usually 20kg per person (there may be some limits on speedboat transfers, too).

Although, if you’re a little over this, they’ll just charge you around US$5 extra per kilogram, but large excess luggage isn’t recommended . 

Here are a few things to leave off your Maldives packing list:

Warm clothes – Leave heavy clothing off your Maldives packing list as the tropical climate means you won’t need thick clothing. Even when it rains, it’s warm!

Heeled shoes – High heels and formal shoes are rarely needed, so leave these off your Maldives packing list. The islands’ relaxed vibe and sandy terrain make such footwear kind of impractical.

Gadgets – While your camera, e-reader and smartphone might be essential items on your Maldives packing list, avoid overloading your luggage with too many electronic devices. Embrace the chance to disconnect and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Maldives.

Too many products – The humid climate can make heavy makeup uncomfortable, so pack your most paired back products.

Snorkelling or scuba diving gear – Unless you’re particularly attached to your own gear, most resorts and dive centres in the Maldives provide all the necessary equipment. However, some couples prefer to bring their own for hygiene reasons .

Expensive jewellery – avoid your own Kim Kardashian moment and leave valuable or sentimental pieces at home. Although of course, wear your engagement and wedding rings – just make sure they’re not loose.

Alcohol – the Maldives operates under sharia law, so alcohol is not permitted and it’s in fact illegal to bring alcohol into the country. So don’t bother with duty free on the way over and instead, wait until you get to the resort where you can order as many delicious cocktails as you like.

The Ultimate Maldives Packing List

Most nationalities do not need to get a visa prior to arrival for the Maldives. Proof of your return flight should be sufficient for the immigration authorities. There is a health form to fill in. Your passport should have an ‘expiry date’ that is at least 6 months after the date you leave the Maldives.

Most documents are electronic now, so make sure you can have your boarding pass or e-ticket on your phone along with your transfer and hotel confirmation.

Some travel vaccinations are recommended for the Maldives. We encourage you to visit the Centers for Disease Control website for up-to-date travel vaccination recommendations or speak to a Tropical Medicine Specialist.

You don’t need to bring lots of cash to the Maldives, and you can get the local currency (Maldivian Rufiyaa) at the airport. If you bring cash, US$ dollars in small bills is best and they should be fresh, undamaged notes.

You usually settle your bill by card at the end of your stay, so you don’t need to carry cash around your Maldives resort. Let your bank know you’re travelling and check if there is anything you need to do to avoid issues using your card abroad.

Tipping is not compulsory or expected as a service charge is included in your bill, but it is appreciated. If you’d like to tip a resort employee, cash in an envelope at the end of your stay is best.

Clothing & Accessories 

You’ll spend most of your time in swimwear, so pack an array of swimsuits, bikinis and some chic beach cover-ups like kaftans.

More than one pair of your favourite sunglasses is an essential addition to your Maldives packing list.

Add some light summer dresses or shorts and tops such as vests / tank tops and t-shirts for lunches and cute dresses / playsuits to your Maldives packing list for evenings.

For men, some long linen style trousers are ideal for night time dining.

We mentioned that you should leave the heels at home, but some cute flip flops/thongs , sliders and sandals are a must.

Include at least one sun hat and a chic beach bag (we love this monogrammed one )

You may want to cover up with a rashguard during the day when you’re out in the lagoon and don’t forget to pick up some water shoes / aqua shoes for snorkelling adventures. 

Pack some comfy clothes for the plane – athleisure wear, sneakers, scarves, socks. 

Gym lovers may want to bring their gear. Although, we’d recommend a barefoot jog along the beach and sunrise yoga or pilates instead of hitting the gym!

You may decide to visit a local island . To be respectful of local customs, pack some modest clothing such as a dress with longer sleeves and length or light trousers.

Bring your own chic beach towel . We love our Dock and Bay quick-dry towels which are compact and come in an array of cute colours. However, resorts provide beach towels, so if you need to leave behind because your Maldives packing list is already overflowing, that’s OK!

Healthcare

Some resorts will have a resident medic or one on call nearby if you need treatment for something relatively minor.

Most Maldives resorts use UK style plugs and the voltage is 230V. A universal travel plug adapter is an essential addition to your Maldives packing list. This one with handy USB connections is our top pick.

Many couples just use their smartphone for photography but the Maldives is one of the most picturesque honeymoon destinations in the world so if you have a camera, bring it . We have the Sony ZV1 . 

A waterproof phone cover or full underwater camera casing will be one of the best things to add to your Maldives packing list, too. You can catch those amazing underwater shots.

Thinking about bringing a drone or living your best influencer life? For beginners, the DJI Mini drone is best.

If you are bringing your drone for recreational use , it’s worth checking with your resort if you need permission to use it. With seaplanes flying above, plus privacy concerns, there may be limits on their use. Send a quick email to your resort and ask them about their drone policy.

Pack your Apple AirPods or your favourite headphones (and don’t forget to make your own honeymoon playlist !).

Physical books are our favourite so bring at least one must-read . However, if you’re voracious readers like us, then load up your Kindle with all the books you’ve been meaning to read.

You could bring an iron or steamer but why spend your time in the Maldives ironing clothes? The resort’s housekeeping service should be able to provide this service if you’re really in need.

In order to leave no room for unforeseen events, it’s of course preferable to go through this list a few days before leaving rather than the day before departure, as you might miss some items.

What to Pack for the Maldives – The Best Outfits to Wear in The Maldives

Planning a trip to the Maldives soon and wondering what should you pack for a vacation in the Maldives ? You came to the right place, jetsetters! The Maldives is my favorite vacation spot in the world. ( You can read about my trip on my Ultimate Maldives Travel Guide here ) I mean, how can you not love it? It’s the most picture-perfect place on earth. And, with the most picture-perfect place on earth, let’s be honest, you want those instagrams to look picture-perfect as well. Which means… cute outfits, and even cuter swimsuits .

Here is my Ultimate Maldives Packing list , full of Maldives outfits , my favorite bikinis and one pieces , and everything else you’ll need to have the best trip of your life, whether it’s your honeymoon , or just a warm tropical getaway.

What do I need to pack for the Maldives?

Swimsuits! I recommend as many swimsuits as possible (You’ll be in the water every day!)

A couple sun hats – to protect you from the sun (I’m the girl in the airport wearing 4 floppy sunhats on her head through security since I refuse to pack and bend them) Here are all my favorite sun hats lately .

Water shoes for snorkeling ( these $10 ones are my favorites! )

Sunglasses – my favorites lately are these ! Kenny wears the “Rumrunners” and I wear the Hannah’s. The rumrunners are co-ed so I steal his too – I swear these look good on EVERYONE!

Strong reef-safe SPF – You can help keep the reefs safe by bringing reef-safe sunscreen that doesn’t harm the ocean’s environment. The Maldivians are very eco-conscious about their fragile, beautiful, islands and you can be a sustainable tourist by just practicing a few easy eco-friendly tourism habits like reef-safe sunscreen , and avoiding bringing or using any plastic in the islands.

A power converter

A kindle or some good beach reads 

Bug spray (I like this natural, plant-based , travel-sized one )

& all of your go-to travel essentials

Will I need a power converter for the Maldives ?

If you’re coming from the USA, yes you will. I recommend this one from Amazon !

Will my hair tools work in the Maldives?

Yes – if they are dual voltage. My T3 Curler , for example, is dual voltage and works great in the Maldives, and throughout the world. However, my Dyson Air Wrap is not and won’t work in the Maldives or abroad (so you can leave it at home!) 

Will I need a rain jacket in the Maldives?

No. It is HOT, hot, hot in the Maldives. Don’t waste your suitcase space on rain gear. Even if you’re traveling during The Maldives rainy season, your resort will have plenty of umbrellas to keep you dry. Unless you plan on biking around in the rain all the time, you won’t need any special rain gear.

What suitcase should I bring to the Maldives? Do the seaplanes have weight restrictions for suitcases?

If your resort uses a seaplane to get to it, you’ll want to double check with the resort on the seaplane weight restrictions. I had no problems on the seaplane for Kandolhu or St. Regis Maldives with my 50 lb checked bag (check out all of my best luggage recommendations here) and carry ons, but if you have a lot more than a 50 lb checked bag, you may want to condense it down just to be safe.

What outfits should I wear in the Maldives?

Most of the resorts in the Maldives  have a relaxed luxury vibe, meaning you can wear whatever you feel like! But you definitely will find many glamorous couples wearing their cutest cover ups , swimwear, and resortwear around the islands. Here are some of my favorite picks for what outfits to pack for the Maldives:

I treated myself to this GORGEOUS dress for my honeymoon and it was 100% worth every penny. I love this brand and their clothes are always expertly made, and with pretty little details that just feel expensive – seriously this dress could not be any more gorgeous for the Maldives.

Ultimate Maldives Packing List | Essential Items for your holiday

If you’re planning a Maldives getaway, then one of the things to consider is what to pack. You might have got your wardrobe sorted, but have you considered all of the extras you will need? Unfortunately, the Maldives islands are secluded, and there are limited options at the resort shop to purchase items when you’re out there (or they come with a hefty price tag!), so read on for your ultimate Maldives packing list.

What should I pack for the Maldives – 6 Essential Items 

The chances are, if you’re heading to the Maldives, you’re going to an all-inclusive resort. All-inclusive means that food, drink and many activities are included within the cost of your holiday. So aside from your typical travel luggage, how do you know what to pack for Maldives holiday? 

Let’s start with your Maldives packing list essentials:

• Dive Shoes / reef shoes
• Full face snorkel mask
• High Factor Sun Lotion 
• Underwater Camera 

1) Dive Shoes / Reef Shoes

The Maldives is known for its stunning white-sand beaches, and you certainly don’t need dive shoes on the shore. You’re most probably going to spend most of your time barefoot. However, you can accidentally step on sharp coral pieces when you’re in the ocean, and it hurts! So take the pain away from swimming in the sea and protect your feet with reef shoes.

2) Snorkel Mask

Snorkelling gear is often provided for free in your Maldives resort. However, there may be limitations to when and where you can use it, which will heavily restrict your experience. I’ve always struggled with snorkelling, so I invested in the masks that cover your entire face. What an invention!

These snorkel masks are perfect for water activities and enable you to swim the coral for hours, with crystal clear visibility and without choking on saltwater! Of course, if you prefer a traditional snorkel, there are some great options that enable deep free diving. Many of them also are action camera enabled, helping you capture vibrant underwater memories.

3) High Factor Sun Lotion

Taking high factor sun lotion sounds obvious, but the heat is intense and relentless. I wouldn’t recommend anything less than factor 30 sun cream in your Maldives packing list. You will find yourself reapplying more than you perhaps would in milder climates. 

Water activities are one of the main things you will do in the Maldives, so it is important to buy waterproof sun lotion and safe for coral / marine life. It is costly to buy sun lotion at the island shop, so pack enough to ensure your skin is well protected!

I use Sun Bum; it smells delicious, is coral safe and helps avoid the burn! 

4) Underwater Camera

You will regret not having an underwater action camera on your Maldives packing list! Sea turtles, string rays, reef sharks and all of the fish in between are just a few of the species you can see around your house reef. More so if you venture further into the Indian Ocean.

I recently replaced my trusty Go-Pro with an Insta 360 Camera, which is excellent for capturing those adventurous moments. If you just want to capture some shots and more price conscious, then you can also get much cheaper action cameras. I’ve tried these before, and the quality and battery life are good enough for you to get some snaps, but consider investing in a better tool if you will use it a lot.

If quality photos mean a lot to you then consider whether the Go Pro Hero 10 is worth the upgrade.

A slightly obscure island packing list essential is a torch. The resorts are usually well lit with soft lighting that sets the ambience perfectly. However, lighting is typically around the pathways, restaurants and bars, not along the beach. A romantic walk along the beach at night is something not to be missed. However, many crabs come out at night so you will need to see where you are going.

You can also find yourself a romantic, secluded spot to lay back and enjoy the stars. I have never seen a clearer sky at night than what I have in the Maldives.

Generally, your belongings are safe to be left on the beach in the Maldives, but there is always a risk. Suppose you’re planning on taking advantage of the all-inclusive offerings such as paddle boarding, kayaking or sailing around on a pedalo.

In that case, it’s worth taking your essentials or more expensive items with you. A dry bag is particularly handy if you use your phone or a digital camera for photos or want to keep your wallet safe. Make sure you invest in a good one as you don’t want to find your stuff ruined!

Which types of clothes to wear in the Maldives

The peak season in the Maldives is from December and March when the weather is at its most extreme. On the other hand, May to October is the wet season, and therefore your Maldives packing list might need to include long sleeve tops or light jackets. However, your resort will likely have umbrellas that you can borrow, so you shouldn’t need to pack these especially. 

Depending on your resort, there may be a dress code that you need to adhere to. Think smart casual, or in some cases just smart. Pack a casual pair of shoes as well as an elegant pair or several. For women, take flowy or maxi dresses for the evening and for men, take a sleeved shirt and sleeveless shirt options. 

What to wear in Male, the Maldives capital 

If you’re stopping in Male, or even just when you’re making your transfers at the Male International airport, make sure add some conservative clothing to your Maldives packing list. The Maldives is a Muslim nation, and therefore you should cover your shoulders and knees (women only) in public areas. This rule doesn’t apply to the private resorts, but if you’re visiting local inhabited areas, you will want to avoid being disrespectful (and also being uncomfortably stared at!). 

A shawl or sarong is perfect if you just want to cover up when necessary without carrying layers or extra clothing.

Maldives Packing List Tips

• If you have a lot of luggage, consider using vacuum bags to make the most out of your suitcase space. 
• Take your snorkelling equipment, so you’re not restricted with renting/using the snorkelling gear provided by your resort. 
• Thoroughly check your luggage before you go through security/bag drop at the domestic airports – security is very strict, and it can hold you up. For example, alcohol and lighters in your checked luggage are prohibited, so don’t include these. 
• Take plenty of high protection, reef-friendly sun cream/lotion and make sure you regularly apply. You will be grateful for the overcast days!
• Your travel days are likely to be extremely long – make sure you pack enough in your carry-on bag to keep you entertained and comfortable.

A vacation to the Maldives islands is a fantasy vacation for many. When you indulge in such a trip, it is imperative that you have the right essential items for your Maldives packing list.

Since the Maldives Islands are such a popular destination, there is a ton of information out there available. During our research, we looked at reviews and articles written by past visitors. We researched information about the country itself, as well as the resources at the many resorts there.

Company blogs, YouTube, and experienced travel bloggers all provide great first-hand accounts about these beautiful islands.

Information About The Maldives

There are a few things you should understand before you venture out on such a Maldives trip. First of all, the Maldives is an island country that is made up of hundreds of islands in the Indian Ocean. So if you don’t enjoy being surrounded by water, this is not the place for you.

This tropical paradise is also a Muslim country. As a result, you should be mindful of the proper dress code – at least when you venture to the capital city of Male and in visiting local islands. Of course, if you are in a resort area you can wear a bathing suit and clothes that are suitable for very hot  weather .

Do not bring items such as drugs, weapons and pornography since they are strictly banned. However, you will be able to enjoy alcoholic drinks as you relax at your resort – and ONLY at the resort. With that said, you will have plenty of sandy beaches, fun activities, and marine life to enjoy. Take advantage of this ultimate Maldives packing list to enhance your trip.

The Ultimate Packing List For The Maldivian Islands

Accepted payment methods and currencies in maldives.

Cash and credit cards are the two main options for payment in the Maldives. Businesses accept Mastercard, Visa, and American Express. US dollars, Euros and British Pounds are accepted as well. You will be able to get cash from the Airport ATM upon arrival as resorts do not have ATM machines.

The Maldivian currency is called the Rufiyaa which can be purchased from banks and money changers if needed. There are about 15 MVR to one US dollar.

As it is a long flight for a possibly action-packed venture, you will need a checked bag and a carry-on. Throw a light sweater into your carry on bag since the long flight itself will most likely be chilly. Get some packing cubes to properly organize and make suitcase space for your Maldivian vacation must haves.

This is very important to know to check your luggage allowance from Male’ Airport to Resort, as majority of Sea Plane & Domestic flights only have a luggage allowance of 20Kg per passenger if you have packed more than this, depending on the situation the internal transfer organizers Sea Plane & Domestic Flights may charge you for additional Kg’s, often your luggage may be transported to hotel on the next flight or the next day if it exceeds more than 20kg per passenger. however, speed boat has no luggage allowance limitations.

Pouches For Your Carry On Bag

Some ideal items to keep with you on your long flight should include a mask, book, and hydration for skin. Consider using a plastic pouch or sleeve for your electronics. There are several water resistant  tech organizers  that may be right for you. Keep your travel documents such as your passport and insurance documents together in a separate pouch as well.

When going about your daily activities, you may want a cloth-like bag made of lightweight material with a single shoulder strap.

Since you will be on an island, use a dry bag for your electronics and cameras. Dry bags come in several sizes and materials. However, it is best to get  one made from nylon  for ultimate protection against moisture. You can use a dry bag duffle bag as your main luggage or simply pack a smaller one to use once you arrive on those white sand beaches.

Typical clothes styles in Maldives

The Maldivian style of dress is conservative, hence it would be best to carry cover-ups and sarongs for the beach-side restaurants where full coverage is required. Sarongs can also double up as towels. Try bringing an elegant pair of sandals in lew of dress shoes for a “night out”.

Men beach vacation clothes

Beach vacation clothes for men should be longboard shorts that are knee-length. The traditional look of men’s clothes might be a kaftan buttoned up to the neck with cotton pants. However, most resorts now have relaxed rules for attire and will welcome men in swimming trunks. Be sure to bring a pair of lightweight long pants in case you plan to dine out at one of the resort restaurants.

Women beach vacation clothes

Ideal Clothes for hot weather are loose cotton pants with crew neck tee shirts, sundresses, and even knee-length shorts. Wearing tank tops during the day is acceptable in resorts but outside the resort boundaries, women are expected to dress conservatively.

Women beach vacation clothes may include bikinis – as long as you are on the beach at your resort. So have fun packing several pairs of bikinis as you prance in the turquoise sea near your abode. However, such clothing is considered too skimpy for the local islands.

Outside of the sandy beaches, you can opt for a kaftan or cover up paired with knee-length pants and board shorts. In case you are planning on boat trips to local islands, it would be best to carry along a few light dresses and skirts so as not to strain your resort clothes too much.

Best types of footwear

The Maldives are famous for their miles of pristine, white-sand beaches that extend into clear blue waters. Hence, you will need handy footwear to walk on the beaches that are made up of fine grains of quartz particles. While it may be tempting to go barefoot on the beach, it is advisable to carry a pair of flip-flops or rubber sandals to protect your feet from the scorching heat and sharp rocks.

If you intend to go for water activities such as scuba diving or snorkeling, then it is best to carry sporty footwear like dive shoes or reef shoes that can  protect your feet  from being cut by fish fins and coral reefs.

For sightseeing, island hopping and hiking, you may want to add at least one pair of sneakers to your Maldives packing list. Although some Maldivian resorts may sell these items, it may not come in your size. So it is better to carry them along as an extra pair.

What clothes not to pack for Maldives

When you pack for the Maldives, leave high heels and other fancy dress shoes behind. Some resorts even have a “no shoes” policy – so check ahead before packing. While your packing list should include clothes for hot weather and beachwear, don’t forget you will be in a Muslim country. Therefore, it is imperative to be respectful and gear towards more conservative clothing when you are visiting Male international airport or spending time in the capital itself.

The sun in the Maldives is extremely strong and in order to avoid skin damage and sunburn, it is advisable to apply an ample amount of suntan lotion. A natural alternative, aloe vera gel is also available in the market. Beware that sand and water reflect sunlight which can further damage your skin. Try buying sunscreen that is  ecologically safe  for the house reef and other marine life.

Be aware that sand fleas are present at some resorts so it is advisable to put on insect repellent especially if you are staying in one of the islands where there are sand flies. Like most hot and humid areas, you will also have to deal with mosquitos.

Beach cover up options

As mentioned before, you should be prepared to cover up when you are not at a beach resort. Bring a  kaftan or sarong  . If you are staying at a large mega-resort, you will most likely be able to buy some local fashionable kaftans at the resort shop.

You will need more than just suntan lotion to successfully protect you from UV rays. Bring a nice wide sun hat for extra skin protection.

The sun is bright so you must protect your eyes as well as your skin so pack a pair of shades with 99-100% UV protection. Polarized glasses are a good style choice to reduce sun glare from horizontal surfaces but they  don’t always come with UV protection .

Electronics

With all the beauty you are bound to see during your trip, your ultimate packing list must include some type of camera!

Best Underwater camera

The GoPro is an extremely popular underwater camera, as is the DSLR. Check out this  list of options  and see which one is best for your portraits of sea turtles and fish. In a case were you forgot to bring your camera, resorts have cameras available for rent for your underwater adventures.

Laptop/iPad

Many resorts have Wi-Fi in case you want to watch a movie or work on your laptop after your amazing time on the beach . Of course, you may even want to use your iPad to record stunning beach videos.

So, don’t hesitate to bring recording technical devices along for your trip. Just ensure that they are properly protected and packed in one of the dry bags mentioned above.

Feel free to bring your phone to the Maldives. There are two mobile (and internet) providers in the country, Dhiraagu and Ooredoo, that provide coverage to all of the islands. A SIM card at Male International Airport will only cost you about $10 US. It is best to buy a SIM card if you can, as you will have to pay extra cost to make phone calls at your resort.

Travel Apps

To make your trip even easier, download the following apps to your phone before you land at your destination.

Viber  – standard way of communication. It is a cross-platform app for chats and video/voice calls.

WhatsApp  – this internationally used app needs no introduction. Use it to call world-wide from the Maldives as you would anywhere else.

Telegram  – while you may not use telegrams where you live at, this is still commonly used on the islands in the Maldives.

Avas Ride  – If you  need a ride  while you are in the capital city, this is the app for you.

Netflix  – Take advantage of the wi-fi at your resorts to watch a movie or TV show after long beach days.

These islands use UK plugs. Bring an adaptor for any electronics you plan to use. Some resorts may be able to lend you an adaptor but you should play it safe and bring your own.

Sports/Activity Gear

Scuba Diving

If you plan to go on diving trips in the Maldives, you should bring your own scuba diving gear like a dry suit/wetsuit, fins, dive computer, regulator, and a diving mask. You can rent the necessary gear at a dive shop on the resort. However, utilizing the area dive shop can be expensive and put a dent in your vacation budget – especially if you do frequent dives.

Anyone who plans to go snorkeling should pack items such as snorkels, masks, and flippers. There are many resorts that provide snorkeling gear but you can save money if you can fit these items into your suitcase.

There are plenty of opportunities for a boat trip between islands. Carry a rain jacket and water boots/shoes. Make sure that you book your tickets beforehand as there are limited seats on the boats during the high season.

Hiking umbrellas are quite popular among tourists due to their ability to  provide cover  even during strong winds and rains of the monsoon season. If you intend to visit the Maldives during this time, then carry a light umbrella that can be easily packed into your beach bag. A rain jacket can also come in handy.

Medication and First Aid

Bug repellent.

Mosquitos are very prevalent on the island and you can easily get mosquito bites. Carry along repellent lotion or spray to prevent infection of wounds.

Maldives Vaccination Requirements

The Maldives highly recommends that visitors should be vaccinated for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Covid-19 upon arrival. The Hepatitis A vaccine can be taken at least 14 days before arrival in Maldives.

Yellow Fever

Visitors are required to present their vaccination certificate for yellow fever if arriving within 6 days of visiting an endemic country.

Malaria/Dengue Fever

Malaria is not prevalent in the Maldives which is why you do not need to be vaccinated against it before visiting. However, it is advisable to carry anti-malarial medication when traveling to places with mosquito infested areas such as rain forests and jungles.

Dengue fever is not prevalent in the resort islands of Maldives, but there have been cases reported on the island of Male which you need to take into account as well.

The Maldives requires visitors to get vaccinated against polio if arriving from a region with polio transmission. The vaccine needs to be received at least 6 weeks before your arrival in the country to be effective.

Travel Documentation

Visa requirements

Make note of the following information when entering the country and  applying for a visa . You must bring the following documents with you:

• Passport valid for at least 6 months past your entry date
• Return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds for your stay
• Travel itinerary including flight numbers, hotel reservations and contact information of your tour guide/ host.

As long as you provide the above documents, you can get a free visitor visa valid for 30 days upon arrival. If you wish to extend your visa beyond 30 days, you will have to pay a fee of Rufiyaa 750. If you have sufficient funds or a letter from a host, you can stay up to 90 days total.

Health insurance

Medical care facilities are available in the Maldives but it is advisable to purchase medical insurance from your home country before going on a vacation. This way, if there are any health issues during the trip, you can avail of medical treatment back at home with ease.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory to have  Covid-19  cover as well. Accidents can occur anytime which is why it is important to be prepared for any potential mishaps even while on vacation. This certainly will come in handy if you plan to participate in extreme water sports.

Personal property protection ( electronics,gear,etc)

Make sure that you have adequate coverage for your personal property. This includes cameras, laptops and other electronic devices. It is advisable to check with your credit card company/travel insurance provider if they can provide a cover for these items in the event of theft or water damage.

Completing Your Maldives Packing List

Well, there you have it. Your bucket list trip to the Maldives is off to an excellent start with this packing list. Now you can pack for the Maldives with confidence and rest assured that your bags will have everything you need.

Maldives Packing List: What to Pack for the Maldives

Maldives Packing List

Having lived in the Maldives, I have travelled and visited both local and resort islands and have compiled this Maldives packing checklist to help you decide what to pack for the Maldives.

What to pack for the Maldives: Maldives Packing Checklist

Packing list for maldives: mosquito repellent.

While most Maldives resort islands fumigate for mosquitoes even the most 5 star luxury resorts have an ongoing battle against the mosquito population so be sure to bring mosquito repellent that contains DEET. I recommend a 50% DEET mosquito spray like this one from Amazon. The Maldives does have incidents of dengue fever which is spread by mosquitoes so be vigilant with mosquito repellent on both resorts and local islands.

Packing List Maldives: Reef friendly Suncream

The Maldives is home to beautiful coral reefs and an amazing array of marine life. The best thing visitors can do is to choose a reef friendly suncream when visiting. Be aware there is a lot of greenwashing around suncreams so make sure your reef friendly suncream is actually environmentally friendly. Check the ingredients list and make sure it does not contain: octocrylene, oxybenzone, oxtinoxate and nano-particles. Read more about harmful ingredients in suncream here. If they are not safe for the reef then they probably are not safe for you either. A product like Reef Repair sold on Amazon here is a safe bet.

Packing List for Maldives : Own Snorkel Gear – Mask

If you are planning to spend a lot of time in the water and snorkelling then consider purchasing and adding your own snorkelling gear to your Maldives packing list. If you feel more comfortable and used to your own equipment then you will have more time to enjoy the marine life and coral reefs and less time struggling with your mask or snorkel. You can always rent from your hotel or resort but having your own equipment is definitely beneficial. If you have a small face, the Oceanic Mini Ice is perfect and I’ve personally been using this snorkel and diving mask for years.

Additionally, choose a snorkel to go with your mask to add to your Maldives packing list. You can buy a snorkel for very cheap – compare prices for snorkels here on Amazon . The best snorkels are ones that block the water from coming in the top.

Maldives Packing Checklist: Sun hat or cap

The Maldives sun is very strong and if you spend a lot of time on boats or on the beach then sun protection is really important.

Packing list for Maldives : What plug do I need for the Maldives?

Electricity adapters – most resorts will have British 3 pin plugs but on local islands and guesthouses there can be a whole range of different pins and electrical plugs. The best thing for your Maldives packing list is to bring a multi-use electricity plug – these ones from Amazon.

What to Pack for the Maldives : Underwater Camera

Maldives packing list : dry bag.

A dry bag is one of my essentials to pack for the Maldives, or actually anywhere in a tropical country where I am spending lots of time on boats or monsoon seasons. The 5Litre dry bags are the best size for your packing list Maldives. Look at different colours and sizes for the Ocean Pack brand here. 

What to Pack for the Maldives : Seasick Bands

As you will undoubtably be spending time on boats, there is a chance of feeling seasick. These Amazon seasick travel bands are the best things I personally use when getting travel sick and many friends have also agreed. They work by pushing on a pressure point on your wrist that stops you from feeling nauseous. I never get on a boat or in a car without them.

Packing List for Maldives : Rash Vest

Another great idea for what to pack for the Maldives is a rash vest. Spending time snorkelling in the sun can lead to dehydration and sunburn and so a long sleeved rash vest like these from Amazon is essential to protect your skin.

What to Pack for the Maldives: Ear Plugs

While there is a lot of peace and quiet in the Maldives it can depend on your location and the time of year. Local islands can be noisy with generators and lots of islands have awesome but noisy fruit bats. The ocean itself can keep visitors up with the crashing of the waves, particularly in monsoon season.

Packing List for Maldives : Currency

US dollars  are used widely in resorts and local islands. Be aware that on local islands you will likely receive change in Maldivian Rufiya. In some shops in Male, only Maldivian Rufiya is accepted but in tourist areas US dollars are always accepted. For resorts you can pay by debit or credit card at the end of your Maldives trip. To pay for local guesthouses I recommend paying in cash as foreign cards don’t always work and there will usually be a 3% card fee.

And finally what not to pack for the Maldives

The Maldives is a Muslim country and has strict laws prohibiting certain items. Therefore, you cannot bring alcohol, pork products or pornography into the country so make sure these are NOT on your Maldives packing list.

Maldives Packing List: The ULTIMATE Must-Haves

You’re heading to the Maldives. What should your Maldives’ packing list have in it?  Bikini, flip-flops, sunglasses – obviously. But what items must you take to the Maldives and what ones can you do without? Don’t worry, friend. Use my  ULTIMATE Maldives’ packing list and there’ll be no trouble in paradise for you.

( Disclaimer: I know I’m a weekend trips blogger. But please, indulge me a little: I went to the Maldives recently; it’s my bucket-list numero uno. Not writing about it and what to pack would be like drinking a piña colada from a highball, not a coconut. I mean, who DOES that?)

MALDIVES’ PACKING LIST: MUST PACKS

Tribord easybreathe snorkel | £25.99.

Why is it important? Snorkelling and diving are the two main activities in the Maldives – and if you don’t dive, snorkelling is a must. Word to the wise: ditch your normal snorkel and mask. Nothing comes close to a better snorkelling experience than using the Tribord EasyBreath Snorkel, trust me. Yes, it looks ridiculous on. Yes, people laughed at me before I went. But boy, it made a huge difference to my Maldives’ underwater experience. If diving is more your thing, then use this brilliant guide for exploring the Maldives’ waters from Dive.In Magazine.

What you need to know: The Tribord EasyBreathe Snorkel blitzes a number of annoying snorkelling problems: the mask doesn’t hurt your face; it doesn’t steam up; it doesn’t let salty water into your eyes; you don’t get a mouthful of ocean if the snorkel is submerged by a wave; it’s easy to get on and off (no catching in wet hair); the snorkel is in-built to the mask, so there’s no risk of you dropping either as you swim and, best of all, it gives you a wider view of what’s going on in the deep! Add it to your Maldives’ packing list now!

UV Protection Rash Vest | £14.99

Why is it important? Second day of my trip to the Maldives and I made a rookie mistake: I went snorkelling for the entire day without a rash vest. The result? A very lobster-red, very painful back. Ouch. Sure, sun lotion on your back will protect you when you’re snorkelling or paddleboarding or surfing, but a much safer option is to pack a rash vest.

What you need to know: A rash vest looks like a t-shirt but is made especially for saltwater adventures. Look for one that gives you SPF protection of 50+ (the highest UPF rating a piece of clothing can have is 50+, the lowest is 15), fits tight to prevent chaffing and is quick-drying. Top tip: don’t wait until you get to the Maldives to buy one. I did; it cost me $50. As I said, ‘ouch’. It’s an essential item to add to your Maldives’ shopping list my friend, so get one before you go – they’re affordable at around £10 upwards.

Underwater Camera , Dry Bag and Float | From  £42.99

Why is it important? One of the biggest thrills about a holiday in the Maldives is the astonishing variety of marine life you’ll get to see. Manta rays, turtles, dolphins, sharks and an endless stream of colourful fish – most of it is a simple splash away from your hotel room or water bungalow. Capturing the action to share with your friends and family is an absolute must; trust me, you’ll regret going home without tangible underwater memories.

What you need to know: I was lucky enough to take a GoPro Hero 4 Silver to the Maldives (complete with a CamKix Floater  in case I dropped it). Not only did it give me fabulous wide-angle video footage, it also meant I could grab stills from the underwater vids to use and share as photos.

Of course, GoPros don’t come cheap – mine set me back around £300. More affordable options are available, including the icefox underwater camera for just over £40. This post has some more affordable options to choose frome. Alternatively, buy an underwater case for your phone for around £10. Whatever you go for, a water-proof camera or underwater camera should also be top of your ‘what to bring to the Maldives’ packing list.

Aqua Shoes | £5.99

Why they’re important? Don’t go swimming in the Maldives without them! Why? There are fish that may want to nibble your toes – yes, Picasso Triggerfish; I’m talking about you – and fish you don’t want to step on – stonefish, you bad. Plus, the coral in the Maldives is razor-sharp. I saw a number of people struggling to walk on the sandbanks in flipflops or bare feet, cursing as they went.

What you need to know:  A pair of reef shoes keep your feet protected from broken shell, cutting coral and feisty fish, and stop you from slipping. My shoes – Tribord 50 Aquashoes – were lightweight, quick-drying, nicely cushioned and had a studded sole. I hardly noticed I was wearing them. Best of all, they were under a tenner!

Rehydration sachets | £3.79

Why are they important? The Maldives gets around 10 hrs of sunshine a day and the average temperature is 29°C. What’s more, the islands are near the equator, meaning the sun’s rays are much more intense than in the northern or southern hemisphere.

So not only is it important not only to cover up properly with the right clothes and good-quality sun protection, it’s important to pack in case of heat exhaustion too.

What you need to know: A pack of oral rehydration sachets is a must for your Maldives’ packing list. They come in powder form and in a variety of flavours and work by replacing the important salts and minerals that you may have lost through prolonged exposure to the sun.

UV wide-brimmed Sun Hat | £24.95

Why is it important? Buying any old straw hat or baseball cap isn’t going to protect you from harmful UV rays. Sorry. Instead, choose smart and buy it before you go. Don’t make my mistake and buy when you get there. My Maldives’ baseball cap cost me a staggering $24 from the island shop and didn’t protect the back of my neck.

What you need to know: Opt for a brand that makes hats with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF), like Palm & Sands, Coolibar or Wallaroo. I particularly like the Palm and Sands Bach Hat with a wide brim – giving your shoulders, neck and your face the coverage they need. It has a UPF of 50+, blocking out 97% of UV rays, is crushable so is easy to pack in a beach bag, and has an inner pull tie to adjust the fit.

Eco-friendly sun block | From £11.50

Why is it important? Unfortunately, many of your regular chemical-based sunscreens contain chemicals that can cause coral bleaching – aka: they kill fragile reefs. I know, I never thought about it either. But once you see the underwater beauty in the Maldives, you’ll want to make wise choices to protect it. Instead, buy a sunscreen that is reef-friendly and biodegradable.

What you need to know: Three eco-friendly brands worth a look are Badger All Natural Sunscreen, Coral Safe and Sea2Stream. These are known as mineral-based sunscreens or physical sunscreens. They work by sitting on your skin and reflecting the sun’s rays, instead of being absorbed by the skin like traditional suncreams. A word of warning: some can leave you looking ghostly! But shop around and you’ll find tinted versions that protect the oceans and don’t harm your beach cred.

MALDIVES’ PACKING LIST: COULD HAVES

Wireless headphones – great for the long plane journey from the UK and transferring in-between. Also sweet for listening to your favourite tunes whilst lying in a hammock or on your sun lounger. I have:  Urbanears 

Mosquito defence – why is it in the ‘could’ section of my Maldives packing list? Because in the resort I stayed in – Cinnamon Dhonveli – mosquitoes weren’t a big problem. Each evening at around 6pm, the staff sprayed insecticide to keep bites at bay. I did bring my own defence, however. But didn’t apply regularly and only suffered a few itchy bites. I use: Jungle Formula Maximum 

Fitflops – you’re going to live in your flipflops whilst in the Maldives, so take a pair that are robust enough to stand the heat! I LOVE my Fitflops – they’ve seen me through many beaches and destinations over the last 7 years (yes, seriously. Haven’t had to change them once!). They’re super-comfy and my feet never tire. Plus, they’re meant to tone my ass as I walk. Still waiting for THAT to happen. I have: Fitflop Lulu

MALDIVES’ PACKING LIST – NON-ESSENTIALS

Adaptor plug – My dear British brethren: you don’t need an international adaptor plug in the Maldives. In most resorts the sockets are a standard UK-style 3-pin.

Books – Yes, non-essential. Unless you don’t like snorkeling, diving or watersports, then bring a good selection! There’s little else to do except snorkel and read.

MALDIVES’ PACKING LIST: GOOD TO KNOWS

Money and costs – The currency of the Maldives is the rufiyaa (Rf), although most of the resorts will bill you in dollars and the only rufiyaa you see will be in the gift shops as souvenirs! At the resort I stayed in, all extras that were outside my all-inclusive package were added to the room bill and settled at the end of the stay, so I never needed to carry any USD with me.

I went to the Maldives for 11 nights and spent just under $400 USD. Just over $200 of that was on the resort wildlife excursions, which cost between $50 – 100 a pop. The remaining dollars I spent on gifts and necessities in the island shop.

Tipping in the Maldives – I did not know the etiquette. My bad. According to The Lonely Planet, a 10-12.5% service tax is added to everything already. However, this doesn’t mean you don’t have to tip. Your room staff and your butler (if you’re fortunate enough to have one) will probably expect something. So be sure to save some extra dollars for them.

Weight allowance – Aside from your standard allowance on the way out and back from the Maldives, you need also to consider your allowances on your transfers to your island. If you’re going by a seaplane transfer to your resort, you’ll only be allowed to take 25kg for free. Extra weight is charged for. Short-hops to resorts are done by speedboat transfer and as far as I know there are no weight restrictions.

MY TOP MALDIVES’ TIP

Don’t spend your precious USD in the resort gift shop. You’ll pay through the nose, like I did. For souvenir shopping, island hop and find a local market. Or buy your gifts at Male airport on the way home. The prices are almost half the cost of the resort shops.

21 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELLING TO THE MALDIVES FOR THE FIRST TIME

Wondering what you need to know before travelling to the Maldives? Have burning questions about what to expect on your Maldives holiday? This is your one-stop comprehensive guide for Maldives travel information.

1.WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT MALDIVES?

The weather is most favourable during the dry season from November through to April. Peak tourist season falls inside this period, from Dec – Feb. Prices are most expensive & availability is in high demand during this time. The wet season runs from May through to October & travellers can certainly expect sunny spells within this period. Prices are less expensive during these months, with many travel deals on offer. The surf season is the same as the wet season (April – October) & diving can be year round, island depending.

2. WHICH AIRPORT DO I FLY TO IN MALDIVES?

Velana International Airport (Malé). The airport is located on Hulhule Island, which is actually attached to Hulhumale Island (the transit island). Hulhumale Island is accessible via taxi& bus and is ideal for travellers arriving late at night. The capital cityof Malé is also close by – just a 5 minute ferry ride / 10 minute taxi ridefrom the airport.

3. DO I NEED A VISA FOR MALDIVES?

Maldives Immigration issues a 30 Day Tourist Visa On Arrival to all nationalities, subject totourists being able to produce a passenger arrival card (given in plane or upon arrival inside airport), a confirmed reservation for each night of theirintended stay and documentation for a departing flight. Tourists may be requested to produce these items to an Immigration Officer upon entry into Maldives, soplease be prepared – save a copy to your smart phone or have these printed beforehand.

At Indulge Maldives Holidays, we provide you with an Immigration voucher that you can produce, containing all of your travel details. All passengers arriving in Maldives must havea machine-readable passport in order to be allowed entry. Your passport must also have at least 6 months validity from your departure date from Maldives to be granted the Tourist Visaon Arrival.

4. DO I NEED TO HAVE MALDIVES ACCOMMODATION PRE-BOOKED?

Yes. All tourists must have a valid hotel reservation for the duration of their stay as this is a condition of entry to be granted the 30 Day Tourist Visa on Arrival.

5. WILL SOMEONE GREET ME AT THE AIRPORT ON ARRIVAL?

Yes. Once you arrivein Maldives, you must first clear Immigration. From the moment you step throughthe automatic sliding doors of the arrival hall, the resort or hotel staff ofwhere you are staying will greet you with their property signboard. If staying at a resort, you can alternatively proceed to the respective resort counterinside the airport. The resort / hotel representatives will assist you with your speedboat, sea plane or domestic flight transfer. Upon your departure from Maldives, the property will again assist you with your return to the airport toensure a smooth departure process from Maldives.

6.  CAN I ARRANGE ISLAND TRANSFERS FROM THE AIRPORT IN MALDIVES?

No. It is not possible to arrive in Maldives & book yourself atransfer from the airport. There are no public ferry, speedboat, sea plane or domestic flight services available from inside the airport. All transfers must be pre-booked through your tour operator, guesthouse, hotel or resort. Speedboat transfers to islands may only run once daily & need to be timed with flights. Our team has knowledge of all island transfers & can assist you with this. All transfers are dependent on weather conditions and are subject to change, pending poor weather. Transfers are often combined with other flights so there may be a short wait upon arrival / and on departure. Your island representative will advise you of this when meeting you at the airport.

7. WILL SOMEONE GREET ME WHEN I ARRIVE AT AN ISLAND? 

Upon arriving at your intended holiday island, a representative from the guest services team of your hotel, resort or guesthouse will meet you on the jetty. Transport to the hotel will beprovided. You will be assisted with your check in process and escorted to your room shortly after arrival.

8. ARE ANY ITEMS PROHIBITED FROM ENTERING MALDIVES?

Yes. As the Maldives is 100% Muslim country, no alcohol, pork, pornography, religious artifacts,idols of worship, narcotics and psychotropic substances, explosives or weapons are allowed to enter Maldives. When departing Maldives, no sand, turtle shells, seashells or marine products can be taken out of the country by tourists.

9.  WHERE CAN I PURCHASE ALCOHOL IN MALDIVES?

Maldives is a 100% Islamic nation, meaning the sale & consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited. Alcohol cannot be brought into Maldives & it is not sold induty free. Resorts & liveaboards/safari boats are the only exception where guests can freely enjoy alcoholic beverages during their vacation. If staying on a local island, there is no alcohol sold due to the strict Islamic laws. Travellers can however visit a designated floating bar boat located off selected islands (Maafushi, Thulusdhoo), & purchase alcoholic drinks for consumption onboard. Budget approximately US$10 per drink on safari boats.

10. WHAT IS THE MAIN CURRENCY USED IN MALDIVES?

The main currencies used in Maldives are US Dollars (USD) & Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR).The official exchange rate is USD$1 = 15.42 MVR.

LOCAL ISLAND VACATIONS: We highly recommend using MVR / USD cash on local islands. Travellers should withdraw or exchange MVR cash on arrival at the airport. It is only possible to withdraw MVR currency from ATMs. Please note currency conversion rates & international bank fees will apply. Travellers cannot withdraw USD cash from ATMs. Not every local island will have ATM services available, so it is best to withdraw MVR cash at the airport onarrival. If paying in USD cash, it is common for change to be given in MVR. The standard conversion rate of USD & MVR is USD$1 = 15.42MVR will be applied. The use of Credit / Debit Cards is very limited on local islands.

RESORT VACATIONS :  We highly recommend using USD / Credit / Debit cards at resort islands. There is no cash withdrawal services on resort islands. MVR currency will not be accepted on resort islands.

MVR can only be exchanged back into your original currency upon your departure from Maldives, only if you have the original receipt issued to you on your initial exchange, at the airport Bank of Maldives exchange counter.

11. DO I NEED TO TIP IN MALDIVES?

Tipping is not compulsory in Maldives, however if you are happy withthe service you have received by the local people who take care of you during your Maldives vacation, a tip is would be appropriate & very much appreciated by the local people as wages are considerably low in Maldives. The amount to tip is completely up to you and your budget, however as a generalized guide, a tip of USD$10 (150MVR) – $20 (300MVR) would be appropriate. Also note,you will not be haggled in Maldives as this is against cultural customs and traditions.

12. ARE THERE TOURIST TAXES IN MALDIVES?

All service industry purchases such as accommodation, restaurants, cafés & excursions will attract a 10% service charge & 12% Government Tax. For accommodation a mandatory government Green Tax of USD$3 per person per night is charged by local island properties & USD$6 per person per day by resorts. Our Indulge Maldives Holiday packages are inclusive of all taxes, however if eating out or purchasing additional excursions, please note that the above may apply. The airport departure tax of US$25.00 is included when you purchase your airline ticket.

13. DO MALDIVIANS SPEAK ENGLISH?

Yes – almost all Maldivians speak fluent English. Dhivehi is the national language and it uses its own alphabetic system, reading from right to left.

14. DO I REQUIRE ANY VACCINATIONS BEFORE TRAVELLING TO MALDIVES?

It is always advisable to discuss with your doctor before travelling to Maldives for current up to date information. We recommend ensuring your Tetanus, Typhoid, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B and Diphtheria vaccinations are up to date. Whilst there is no Malaria in the Maldives, Dengue Fever is often present. Wearing mosquito repellent is recommended, especially around sunset. We advise to bring medication to treat common conditions such as travellers diarrhoea & vomiting.

15. DO ANY DRESS CODES APPLY IN MALDIVES?

If staying at a resort island – you can wander around in your bikini all day if you please.

When staying on local islands, it is however important to dress a little modestly when moving through the local village area & passing by the houses where local people and children live. This aims to prevent offending Maldivian locals. Local island tourism is still quite new in Maldives, and local people are adjusting to having tourists on their islands. Wearing longer skirts, dresses, shorts, thick-strapped singlet tops & t-shirts is considered appropriate when walking through the village areas. Never walk through a village island wearing only a bikini, as this is strictly against local laws.

Walking around the beach & tourist areas of an island, it’s generally acceptable to wear shorts & singlets, having arms / legs exposed. Tourists must only wear bikinis at the designated bikini beaches of an island. Always check first if it is a bikini beach before swimming. Your guesthouse or hotel can advise you on this. It is necessary to wear a sarong, light beach dress, t-shirt & shorts etc when moving to & from a bikini beach. Bikinis are also fine to wear on sandbanks, snorkeling trips, & at resorts – always ask your guesthouse /hotels if you aren’t sure if your clothing is appropriate.

If visiting the capital city Malé, we recommend to dress modestly – knee length shorts & t-shirts as a minimum.

16. CAN I DRINK THE WATER IN MALDIVES?

No, not unless you like drinking salt water!

Each hotel will provide bottled drinking water for guests. It’s also easy to purchase extra water bottles from local shops, for around 30c for 1L. If you bring a refillable drink bottle, this will help to cut down on plastic as re-fill stations are available. Brushing your teeth with the water is fine.

17. DO MALDIVES HOTELS HAVE WIFI / WILL I NEED A SIM CARD?

WiFi is supplied by some hotels & guesthouses. The Maldives has a fast and reliable internet connection. If you wish to connect to internet when you are out & about each day, it may be advisable to purchase a SIM card. This is easy to do at the airport from Ooredoo & Dhiraagu, the two main phone/internet coverage providers in Maldives. USD$20 will provide around 3-5GB of data.

18. WHAT TYPE OF ELECTRICAL ADAPTOR WILL I REQUIRE FOR MALDIVES?

The three-pin (British style) socket is mostly used in Maldives. Some guesthouses provide international powerpoints and will have adaptors available for hire, however weadvise on bringing your own.

 19.  WHAT SIZE SUITCASE SHOULD I BRING TO MALDIVES?

You will probably have a 30kg luggage limit with your airline ticket, however this isn’t to say that you will need to bring 30kgs of luggage to Maldives! Remember you will be travelling via speedboat and you may need to carry your luggage on and off boats. You may also need to wheel / lift your suitcase through sandy roads at times.

20.  DO I NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE?

YES – this is a must when travelling internationally & should be arranged at least 1 week in advance of your trip commencement. Travel insurance can cover the cost of medical treatment, travel misadventure & baggage mishaps. Always read your policy in depth before purchasing. Travel Insurance is compulsory in joining our retreats.

21. WHAT TO BRING TO MALDIVES

Maldives is a tropical destination so daytime temperatures are usually around 28-30 degrees.

We recommend bringing:

• Lightweight,comfortable & cool clothing
• Atleast one or two modest outfits to wear through island villages / to Malé City e.g. long skirt / pants / long dress / t shirt / long sleeve top
• Day time casual clothing for the islands – shorts, t-shirts, skirts, singlets etc
• Smart casual clothing for any special dinner nights / resort day trips
• Shoes– thongs/flip flops or sandals. No need for enclosed shoes unless you want to workout. Possible booties for surfing.

The Maldives offers visitors a true island paradise. This idyllic island nation, nestled in the heart of the Indian Ocean, beckons you with irresistible charm and natural beauty.

With soft, white sand beaches set against gentle turquoise waters and swaying palm trees, the Maldives is a sanctuary of tranquillity unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Climate & Weather

Set in the heart of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives consists of 26 atolls , made up of over 1,000 coral islands scattered across some 90,000 square kilometres. These atolls, formed from coral reefs, stretch from 600km south of India and Sri Lanka towards the equator, painting a picturesque panorama of blues and greens.

Despite the vast area, land accounts for just under 300 square kilometres. The Maldives is more than 99% water and one the most geographically dispersed countries in the world. Each island, often surrounded by a turquoise lagoon, is typically no more than 1.8 meters above sea level.

The geography of the Maldives gives rise to a unique visitor experience: one island, one resort. This means that each resort occupies an entire distinct island – you never have to share the beach with guests from other hotels!

The Maldives enjoys a tropical monsoon climate. This can be broadly divided into two seasons: the dry season (Iruvai) associated with the northeast monsoon and the wet season (Hulhangu) with the southwest monsoon.

There is no concept of winter and summer in the Maldives.

• Dry Season: From December to April, the Maldives sees clear blue skies, calm seas, and plenty of sunshine. This period is considered the peak season for tourism.
• Wet Season: Occurring between May and November, this season brings in periodic rains and occasional thunderstorms. However, the showers are often short-lived and are interspersed with bright spells.

Whilst the Maldives is a year-round destination, the dry season is often preferred by sun-seekers aiming for perfect beach days. Those willing to encounter a few rain showers in exchange for fewer crowds and potentially better deals should consider the wet season.

No matter when you choose to visit, the Maldives offers consistently warm temperatures, ranging from 26°C (79°F) to 31°C (88°F), and inviting turquoise waters that maintain a steady 28°C (82°F) throughout the entire year, even 30m below the surface.

Travel to the Maldives is well established despite the remote location and spread-out nature.

International Arrivals

Malé International Airport (MLE) , also known as Velana International, is your gateway to the Maldives. Nearly every international flight, be it from Europe, Asia, or the Middle East, lands here. This airport is located on the island of Hulhulé which is adjacent to the capital city Malé.

Whilst there are several other airports dotted around the Maldives they’re typically used for domestic transfers within the Maldives. International traffic to the smaller airports is almost exclusively light jets; commercial airlines all land at Malé.

The biggest carriers serving the Maldives are Emirates (via Dubai), Qatar (via Doha), and Etihad (via Abu Dhabi).

Airlines such as British Airways (London Heathrow), Singapore Airlines (Singapore Changi), Discover (Frankfurt), Turkish Airlines (Istanbul), and IndiGo (Mumbai) operate a limited number of direct flights to the Maldives. Further airlines operate direct flights on a seasonal basis.

How to get to your Resort

Once you land in the Maldives, you’ll need to take connecting transport to reach your resort or local island. There are three common ways for tourists to get around the Maldives.

• Seaplanes : A uniquely Maldivian experience! Seaplanes operate during daylight hours and offer breath-taking, low-level aerial views of the atolls and lagoons.
• Speedboats : Ideal for destinations closer to Malé, speedboats offer a swift and scenic transfer without the need to board a small plane.
• Domestic Flights : For distant atolls, there are domestic flights that can whisk you away to regional airports scattered across the country, usually followed by a short boat ride.

Additionally, public ferries and dhonis also operate throughout the Maldives and present a good option for the budget traveller or those wishing to explore local islands.

The Maldives is particularly open when it comes to welcoming tourists. All nationalities receive a 30-day free tourist visa upon arrival, provided you have a valid passport, a confirmed hotel reservation, and an onward or return ticket. While the process is typically hassle-free, it's always wise to check for any updated visa policies before travel.

The Maldives has no COVID restrictions or requirements for tourists.

The majority of tourists visiting the Maldives choose to stay at one of the 170+ island resorts , but they’re not the only option for travellers. Guesthouses and local hotels are gaining in popularity, and liveaboards offer a diver’s haven.

Resort Islands

The Maldives is renowned for its resort islands where each resort occupies a private island with a limited number of guests. This unique approach means that no matter which resort you go to you’ll enjoy a more exclusive and secluded experience than other destinations.

Resorts range from affordable and rustic through to opulent and luxurious with options to suit every taste and budget. The vast majority are family friendly these days with a handful of adult-only resorts.

Guesthouses & Hotels

Local islands have seen a surge in guesthouses over the past decade. They offer travellers an authentic Maldivian experience at a fraction of the price of luxury resorts. Moreover, staying on a local island lets you immerse in Maldivian culture and traditions.

While the Maldives is famed for its luxury, there are a number of budget-friendly hotels, particularly in Malé and the surrounding areas. These offer a more affordable way to experience the Maldives.

Note that staying at a guest house or hotel on a local island means fully embracing local culture and values – alcohol is prohibited outside of the resort islands and modest dress is expected.

Most resorts have dedicated wedding coordinators to handle every detail, from floral arrangements to traditional Maldivian drummers.

Maldivian society is deeply rooted in its traditions, customs, and Islamic heritage. As travellers, understanding and respecting these traditions ensures a harmonious visit.

Culture & Heritage

The Maldives has a rich tapestry of history that dates back over 2,500 years. Its geographical location made it a significant crossroads for sea traders, which has influenced its culture, politics, and economy. Whilst Buddhism was likely practiced by early settlers, Islam has been the dominant religion of the Maldives for nearly 1,000 years and deeply interwoven into the nation's cultural, social, and daily fabric.

Traditional crafts like lacquer work, mat weaving, and boat building (Dhoni) play a pivotal role in the Maldivian cultural landscape. They offer a glimpse into the nation's rich history and craftsmanship.

Dhivehi is the official language, with its unique script called Thaana. English, however, is widely spoken in the tourism sector.

Etiquette and Do’s & Don’ts

The Maldives is an Islamic nation and it is advised that tourists are aware of social norms before visiting.

There is a marked difference between local islands inhabited by Maldivians which observe strict rules and resort islands which are able to operate looser rules for guests.

When visiting local islands, and ideally when transiting Malé:

• Dress Modestly: When visiting inhabited islands or Malé, modest dress is expected. This means clothing long enough to cover knees, tops that cover shoulders, and no exposed waist or back.
• Swimwear: is restricted to designated tourist beaches when outside resorts.
• Public Behaviour: Public displays of affection, like kissing or hugging, are frowned upon, especially on local islands. It's best to be discreet and respectful.
• Alcohol: Consumption of alcohol is only permitted on resort islands and at sea, so you won’t be able to purchase alcoholic drinks on Malé, local islands, or in Maldivian airspace.
• Religious Observances: The Maldives observes several Islamic holidays and festivals. During the month of Ramadan, eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours can be disrespectful on local islands.
• Gift Giving: If invited to a local's home, it's a kind gesture to bring a small gift. Gifts from your home country or sweet treats are often appreciated.

The Maldives faces serious challenges related to environmental preservation. Travelers should be conscious about coral protection and never touch marine life. Follow the principles of leaving nothing but footprints and taking nothing but memories.

Understanding and respecting local customs and the environment not only enriches your travel experience but also fosters positive interactions with locals. Always keep an open mind and the Maldives will reward you with memories to cherish.

Whilst tips are not expected it’s a welcomed gesture where great service is delivered and can be an important income source for workers.

We generally recommend tipping a couple of dollars per guest for one-time services such as with drivers, boat crew and baggage handlers. For on-going services such as those provided by waiters and waitresses and housekeeping many guests opt to tip once towards the end of their stay. Tips in the region of $10-20 per week are about right.

In any case, tips are at your discretion, particularly within resorts where a service charge of 10% will be added.

Maldivian Cuisine

The culinary landscape of the Maldives is a reflection of its rich cultural tapestry and abundant marine life. Infused with flavours from its neighbouring countries and centuries of history, Maldivian cuisine offers a delectable voyage for the palate.

Staples of Maldivian Cuisine

• Fish: Tuna, in particular, is a mainstay in Maldivian dishes, be it in the form of curries, grilled preparations, or sun-dried.
• Coconut: Used in various forms – grated, milked, or as oil – coconut adds a distinctive flavour and richness to many dishes.
• Starches: Rice and roshi (a type of flatbread) often accompany main dishes. Tubers like taro and sweet potato also make frequent appearances.
• Chilies: Don’t underestimate the local palate! The Giltheyo Mirus (scotch bonnet) is one of the most popular varieties grown throughout the Maldives.

Maldivian dishes tend to make up a small but important part of the cuisine available at resorts, which often feature food from around the world through themed restaurants or nights.

For those looking to delve deeper into Maldivian gastronomy, consider taking a cooking class or joining a local family for a meal. Many resorts and local islands offer such immersive experiences, allowing travellers to not just taste but also craft these culinary delights.

Even when travelling to paradise it's always wise to be equipped with practical information to ensure a hassle-free journey. Here's what you need to know before setting foot on the Maldives' powder-soft shores.

The Maldives operates on Maldives Standard Time, which is 5 hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+5). However, it's essential to note that some resorts set their own " island time " to optimise daylight for guests, usually an hour ahead or behind the official time.

The Maldives does not observe daylight saving time, ensuring consistent timings for sunset and sunrise throughout the year.

The official currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR); however, the US Dollar is the standard within the tourism sector. Resorts operate on a USD basis. Some resorts will also allow you to settle your bill with other reserve currencies such as EUR and CHF.

Electricity & Sockets

Maldives uses British style three-pin plugs (Type G) at 230V / 50Hz. Resorts are often able to supply adapters but it’s worth coming prepared if needed.

Dhivehi is the official language, but English is widely spoken, especially in the tourism sector. English is the primary language in most resorts, and many resorts also have staff that speak other languages as such as German, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, French, and many more.

Warm and temperate all year round. Seasons are dictated by the monsoons with dry season being December through to April and the wet season typically May to November.

Dry season is characterized by clear skies and glassy calm seas. It's the peak tourist season, so expect higher prices. Wet season sees more rain and occasional tropical storms. However, this is the best time for water sports enthusiasts and can be materially cheaper.

Connectivity

Most resorts offer Wi-Fi, and local SIM cards with data packages are available for purchase at the airport or in Malé. A digital sim is a great option for those with modern smartphones.

There is good mobile coverage across the Maldives, but be aware it is one of the most expensive places in the world to make or receive international calls.

Vaccinations

No specific vaccinations are required for entry, but it's advisable to be up-to-date with routine vaccinations in any case. COVID vaccination is not required.

The Maldives is no exception in levying taxes on goods and services. The current rate of tax (GST) for the tourism sector is 16%. Resorts must also add an additional 10% service charge for tourism services, as required by Maldivian law, for the benefit of employees.

Tip: Be aware that the majority of places list prices exclusive of GST, service charge and green tax . Always read the small print or ask for clarification to be sure of the true cost.

Some websites also follow this practice, appearing cheaper than competitors until the final checkout page.

The Maldives is generally regarded as a safe destination for tourists and is well regarded. This is particularly true of the resorts which each occupy their own exclusive island. Simple steps will ensure a smooth and relaxing holiday.

Political Environment

Whilst political demonstrations occasionally take place, they are typically isolated to the capital city of Malé. Travellers are advised to avoid large gatherings or demonstrations if visiting the capital and check their foreign office before travelling for up-to-date information.

Crime levels are very low in resorts and typically isolated to petty theft of unattended items. You should avoid leaving items unattended, remember to lock your room when away, make use of safes or safety deposit boxes, and be vigilant of your valuables if visiting local islands.

The warm waters around the Maldives are particularly inviting but the ocean must be respected at all times. Tides and currents can pose a risk to swimmers.

We recommend speaking to the dive centre at your resort for advice specific to your island. They’ll be able to inform you of local conditions and best practices as well as the times and locations to hit the water. Safety and snorkelling equipment will also be available.

Personal Health

The Maldivian sun can be intense – even when cloudy. Always apply a high SPF, reef-safe sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and avoid direct sunlight during peak hours (from 10 am to 4 pm).

With the tropical climate, it's easy to get dehydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you're indulging in water activities.

Drinking Water

Fresh water is a scarce and valuable resource in the Maldives, and tap-water is generally non-potable. Always consume bottled water and drinks where possible, especially if visiting local islands. Boiled / treated water can be used if needed.

Marine Life

When in the water simply avoid touching any wildlife and maintain a safe distance. You could accidently injure yourself or stress the animal. Take care to stay away from stonefish and lionfish which both have venomous barbs. If you follow the simple rule of looking without touching you are extremely unlikely to have any problems.

Despite popular culture, sharks in the Maldives are not a threat to people. The huge whale shark is a filter feeder and smaller sharks such as reef sharks and nurse sharks are timid, preferring to swim away. Whilst wild animals can lash it out if they feel threatened or attacked you don’t need to be afraid of sharks in the Maldives.

Tip: Dress for your destination when travelling. Wearing light clothing and using a blanket on the plane will make your arrival in the Maldives much more comfortable.

Be aware that the baggage weight limit for seaplanes is typically lower than for international flights, especially if travelling business or first class. Try to pack light!

• Beach Attire: Swimwear, sarongs, and light beach cover-ups are a must for those idyllic beach days. Consider a rash vest to effectively protect yourself from the intense sun.
• Resort Wear: Typically, lightweight dresses, shorts, t-shirts, and sandals for lounging at the resort or dining out. Some resorts have more formal air-conditioned restaurants where smarter dress is expected.
• Modest Clothing : If you plan to visit local islands or Malé, ensure you pack modest attire such as long skirts, trousers, and tops that cover the shoulders.
• Footwear: Flip-flops for the beach, water shoes if you're exploring coral reefs, and a pair of comfortable sandals for the island. Some resorts also require trainers to use their gym.

Accessories

• Sunglasses: Naturally!
• Power Adapter: The Maldives uses the British-style three-pin plug (Type G), so you may want to bring a travel adapter
• Chargers: For all your important devices. Consider adding a portable charger for excursions and extended beach lounging.
• Waterproof Bags: Useful for boat trips or water sports to keep your valuables dry and safe.
• Waterproof Camera: To capture the underwater marvels during snorkelling or diving sessions.
• Snorkelling / Diving Gear: If you prefer using your own. Many resorts and dive shops, however, provide equipment for rent or as part of a package.
• Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated and minimize plastic waste. Health and Personal Care:
• Reef-Safe Biodegradable Suncream: Essential for protecting both your skin and the delicate marine ecosystems.
• Basic First Aid Kit: Include band-aids, antiseptics, pain relievers, and any personal medications. Most resorts have a medical centre or resident doctor in any case.
• Insect Repellent: While resorts generally maintain a bug-free environment, it's handy when visiting local islands. Small denomination USD bills are useful for tipping and visiting local islands.

Prohibited Items

The Maldives is an Islamic nation and certain items are strictly prohibited. Some of these may not be obvious to travellers unfamiliar with local customs including:

• Religious materials and idols: Anything contrary to Islam, including religious texts and symbols from other religions. In practice, tourists are generally able to travel with small personal effects such as a single cross on a necklace, but having a significant amount of material could be seen as trying to undermine Islam which carries serious penalties.
• Alcohol and pork: Both are prohibited for import and consumption on local islands, but are available to tourists on resort islands.
• Narcotics and illegal drugs: The Maldives has strict anti-drug laws. Possession of even personal quantities for medicinal purposes can lead to severe punishments in the Maldives. For legal prescription medication it is recommended to travel with your prescription or doctor’s letter. If in doubt check with the Maldivian authorities before travelling.
• Materials harmful to the environment: Single-use plastic is frowned up and increasingly prohibited at resorts. Any chemicals or materials harmful to the environment may also be restricted at import.
• Shells and sand: Taking shells or sand from the Maldives is strictly prohibited, including items sold to you by vendors. Such items will be confiscated at customs and may incur significant penalties.

When in doubt it’s best to leave items behind or check with the Maldivian authorities or embassy beforehand.

Drones are strictly prohibited at resorts without prior agreement from resort management on a case-by-case basis.

We strongly recommend taking travel insurance when visiting the Maldives. A good policy will cover disruptions beyond your control, any potential health issues, accidents, and emergency evacuations.

Given the island nation's geography and remote location, medical evacuations by air can be extremely expensive. The most serious incidents may even require transport to another country such as India.

For those interested in scuba diving – whilst many insurers cover recreational diving (to 30m in line with PADI) it’s worth confirming in advance and considering specialist diving travel insurance.

Some of the top resorts in the Maldives command significant price tags well above what standard travel insurance will cover. In these cases, we recommend high-value travel insurance.

The Maldives, with its fragile marine ecosystems and low-lying islands, is particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change and human interference. At the same time, the country is heavily dependent on tourism. It is critical that all visitors respect the environment and preserve it as best they can.

By following the principles of leaving only footprints and taking only memories you’ll help to preserve this unique and beautiful environment. Here are a few practical steps you can take:

• Reef-Safe Suncream: Chemicals in many sunscreens can be harmful to corals. Always opt for biodegradable, reef-safe options.
• Coral Care: Corals are living organisms which take decades to grow, so take great care not to touch them, stand on them or accidently kick them with fins.
• Conserve Water: Fresh water is a valuable resource in the Maldives so please avoid waste.
• Green Practices : Consider choosing resorts that implement sustainable practices like water conservation, waste management, and energy-efficient systems.
• Conservation Initiatives: Some resorts have marine biology programs, coral planting, or turtle conservation initiatives. You can support and participate in these efforts.
• Reduce Waste: Almost everything used at resorts has to be shipped in, and the waste has to be shipped out. Simple acts like avoiding disposable items and avoiding food waste can make a big difference.
• Minimise Plastic: Whilst plastic is hard to avoid entirely, we can each strive to do our best to minimise plastic usage, particularly rejecting single-use plastics.

Sustainable travel in the Maldives isn't just about enjoying the archipelago's wonders; it's about ensuring that these wonders endure. Embracing these guidelines will ensure that your journey leaves a positive imprint on the islands and ensures they remain a paradise for years to come.

What to pack for a holiday to the Maldives

Woohoo, you’re going on holiday to the Maldives! You’re going to have the best time ever.

You may think that all you’ll need to pack for a holiday to the Maldives would be your swimsuit and your suntan lotion. These will definitely be high on your list but there are a few extras you’ll definitely want to squeeze into your case!

I’ll begin with a few packing tips for the Maldives before moving on to some of my favourite items.

Tip #1 – What’s the seaplane weight allowance?

Before packing your bags, make sure you check what the seaplane luggage allowance is. If you’re flying long-haul, you’ll probably have a pretty decent luggage allowance. With Turkish Airlines I had 30kg plus 8kg for my hand luggage. That’s a pretty hefty suitcase! But when we arrived in the Maldives we found out that the seaplane only allows 25kg and you’ll need to pay for any extras. Our luggage was well under but we saw other guests who had to pay a lot to get their luggage on the seaplane.

Tip #2 – Dress Conservatively

The Maldives is a Muslim country where a lot of women will wear either a burka or a headscarf. It’s polite and respectful to dress conservatively – particularly around the airport, Male and small villages. Once you’re in your resort or island you won’t need to worry about it too much as it will mostly be tourists around.

Make sure you pack a large scarf that can be worn over your shoulders. Also pack at least one pair of loose, light trousers or a long skirt or dress.

Tip #3 – Swimwear you can swim in

If you’re a guy you probably have no idea what I’m talking about right now. If you’re a girl, you’ll know exactly what I mean. Sexy, skimpy little bikinis looks gorgeous while you’re strolling along the beach. But when you’re swimming they tend to slip away in the places you really need them to stay put! You’re going to want to do a lot of swimming, snorkelling and maybe even scuba diving so when you’re packing for the Maldives make sure you have a least one swim suit that’s suitable.

Tip #4 – An underwater camera

If you’ve been thinking about investing in an underwater camera (like a GoPro ) but weren’t sure if it was worth it, it really is for the Maldives. The water is so clear and there are so many fish, you really won’t want to miss the chance to capture these on camera. You’ll also want it for boat trips or when you’re on the beach.

Tip #5 – Leave the shoes at home

Our island, Coco Palm Dhuni Kohlu, was made up of entirely sand so most guests ditched their shoes within a day or two. You didn’t need them and it just made walking even more difficult! It was great walking around barefoot and I loved getting dressed up but not worrying about heels.

Tip #6 – What to wear in the evenings?

Each resort will be different but, on the whole, laid-back luxury is the vibe most resorts go for. Ladies are lucky and can get away with almost anything but guys often need to wear a collar and will sometimes need full length trousers.

Tip #7 – Take a dry bag (or two)

If you’re taking lots of boat trips and particularly if you’ll be scuba diving, a dry bag is really handy. You can keep all of your valuables and clothing safe and dry and not worry about them getting wet on the boat or during rainstorms. I love the DryU colourful dry bags .

We also used them as packing cubes when we were packing our suitcases for the Maldives to keep everything neat, organised and compressed.

I also found that dry bags make a cool ‘man bag’ meaning Sam was happy to carry all of our stuff so I didn’t have to squeeze everything into a girly beach bag.

Tip #8 – Keep make-up to a minimum

It’s very humid (and sweaty!) in the Maldives so there’s no point in caking your face in make-up.  Mascara, blusher, eye brow pencil, a shine reducing powder or cream and lippy were all I wore.

Tip #9 – Consider a lightweight speaker

Some hotels provide docking stations but if yours doesn’t then pack a lightweight speaker. There’s nothing better than lazing by your own private pool while listening to your favourite tunes. A great budget-friendly speaker for travel is the Anker Soundcore 2 . It’s waterproof and has 24 hours battery life.

Obviously, be mindful of your fellow guests. There would be nothing worse than being in a villa next to someone who had terrible must blaring all day and night.

Tip #10 – Don’t forget the insect repellent

Mosquitoes weren’t too much of a problem for us but there were a couple around. Don’t forget the DEET to keep those pesky biters away. I use Jungle Formula and this is my favourite spray as it’s so easy to apply.

Tip #11 – Make sure you have some small notes for tipping

One thing I always forget when I arrive in a destination it to make sure I have small notes for tipping. If you tip your room cleaners on your arrival they’ll look after you for your whole stay.

Tip #12 – Brits won’t need plug adaptors

They use British plugs in the Maldives so lucky Brits don’t need them.

Tip #13 – Use packing cubes

I love packing cubes to help save space and keep my suitcase neatly organised.

When packing for the Maldives, fill your suitcase with loose, easy dresses that you can throw on over your bikini. I always pack lots of dresses when I’m travelling as they’re small and light and easy to wear. A cute swimsuit, a loose cover-up, sunnies, flip flops, a sun hat and an enormous beach bag and that’s pretty much your Maldives packing list sorted.

Top Tip: If you’re shopping for summer clothes when it’s the winter season at home, go straight to the websites of brands or websites that specialise in swimwear. Brands like Seafolly or Roxy and websites like Coco Bay are great. 

Holywell Trousers – Tahouts – £35

I love these printed pants from Tahouts. They’re tailored so they can look quite smart but the printed pattern and light cotton makes them fun and comfortable. These are my perfect plane pants! I love them so much I have them in green and blue.

The holiday low-down

I flew to Male, the capital of the Maldives, with Turkish Airlines . I departed from Birmingham with a 3-hour layover in Istanbul – a good choice if you’re travelling with little ones!

I stayed at Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu for 6 nights in a Deluxe Villa on a full board basis.

From clothing suggestions to entertainment recommendations, we list all the travel essentials for your upcoming trip to paradise.

Maldives Travel Essentials

When it comes to figuring out what to pack for the Maldives, it helps to start with the essentials. You need to remember to pack these items, such as your passport and phone charger, to help ensure your travels go smoothly. 

Maldives Travel Documents

First, you need a valid, up-to-date passport to travel to the Maldives. No matter your country of origin, all members of your travel group, including infants and children, will need one. Without a valid passport, you won’t be allowed to enter the Maldives, let alone board your flight. 

The good news is that you don’t need to apply for a visa before your trip. Upon arriving in the Maldives, all tourists receive a free 30-day visitor visa. What’s more, Indian and Russian tourists can stay up to 90 days. 

Next, you’ll want to gather all your travel information, including your aeroplane tickets and hotel reservations. Be sure you have confirmation numbers on hand so you can easily retrieve these documents when you arrive at the airport or your resort.

When booking your travel, you may have decided to purchase travel insurance, which helps cover the costs of unexpected incidents during your stay, such as medical or evacuation expenses. If you purchased this insurance, be sure to pack your policy number in case you need to use it during your holiday.

We recommend printing copies of these documents, photocopying your passport and keeping them in a safe space. These copies will be helpful if you misplace them or can’t access the hard copies during your travels.

Money and Cards for Maldives

Money and bank cards are next on our Maldives packing list. Of course, you’ll want to keep these in a safe place that’s easily accessible, such as a zippered pocket or secure compartment. 

Remember to pack your credit and debit cards. Depending on your financial institution, you may need to notify them that you’re travelling so they don’t flag your international charges or freeze your account.

Also, it’s a good idea to have some emergency cash on hand and local currency—the Maldives use Maldivian Rufiyaa. You can convert your money before travelling at a currency exchange station or the airport once you’ve arrived in the Maldives. 

Electronics

It’s time to focus on your electronics. You’ll want to pack your mobile phone, waterproof camera and charger, but you may also want to pack a portable power bank to charge your electronics on the go. 

It’s important to note that the Maldives uses type D and G electrical sockets, so you may need to purchase a universal charger adapter to make your plugs compatible. If you don’t use the proper charger adapter, the socket could damage your electronics. 

Clothing and Footwear for the Maldives

Let’s move on to clothing because you’re probably wondering what to wear in the Maldives. 

This island paradise boasts year-round warm temperatures, making any time a  good time to visit . Therefore, you’ll need the same kinds of clothes, such as swimsuits and sandals, regardless of when you book your trip here. 

The average temperature in the Maldives is 83°F or 28°C, so dress accordingly! 

Since you’ll likely spend a good portion of your holiday lounging at the beach and poolside, pack several swimsuits, flip flops or waterproof sandals and some cover-ups or sarongs. 

Casual Wear

What other clothes for the Maldives might you need? We suggest packing some comfortable, casual clothes you can wear while exploring your Sun Siyam Resort.
