Gay Lisbon Travel Guide

Portugal’s beautiful capital Lisbon is a very historically rich and forward thinking city. With hot summers and sandy beaches, it makes a perfect vacation spot.

It comes as no surprise that Lisbon is the bustling capital of Portugal, for it has long served as a thriving LGBT center of culture, arts, and progressive society politics. The current reneaissance occuring here is allowing Lisbon to continuously make its mark on Europe. This beautiful city is built on seven hills near the Atlantic, so ocean breezes keep things especially cool and pleasant. Because of its proximity to the coast, the weather can quickly change though so be sure to come prepared for a range of temeratures and climate qualities during your travels! 

The steep hilly streets make getting around town especially interesting, although luckily Lisbon has an advanced network of public transportation services which are extremely easy to navigate. Lisbon is prone to traffic jams so relying on train and bus is the best bet for getting around town. Be sure to check out all of the different neighborhoods within Lisbon- many of them have very unique qualities and personalities of their own! The architecture here is legendary so don't forget that camera!

In addition to casual site seeing, Lisbon is an amazing arts and culture destination. Dozens of museums are housed in Lisbon as well as galleries, shops, and boutiques with their own special offerings. Lisbon also features "Ask Me" centers and kiosks around town which have plenty of information for visitors planning their trip once they hit the ground. No matter what direction Lisbon takes you in, you will find plenty to keep you busy in this legendary city!

Although Lisbon has always been a gay-friendly destination with a vivid gay nightlife, it flew under-the-radar for quite many years, not managing to make it to the top "must visit" gay destinations. 2018, however, was a game-changing year for Lisbon, as it hosted the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time, so its queer-friendly attitude was clear to the worldwide gay community.

Since then, Lisbon has been developed as a gay destination, and it's now actually more popular than ever. The gay nightlife has been expanded, and many of the gay bars and clubs now organize frequent events and parties. All that combined with the city's exquisite architecture and abundance of activities to do, have made it a perfect getaway for all types of gay travellers, from gay families, to couples and solo backpackers.

However, as we know that there is not a better way to discover Lisbon rather with the help of a local, we decided to make a research on where do gay locals hang out during day and night,  and present them to you .

If you are a couple...

Traveling with your partner means that you have to keep a balance on the gay places that you are going to visit (unless you are searching for something else). This is why, we are not going to focus on the gay bars and clubs of Lisbon (if you are interested in that, you can check out the section “if you are traveling solo or with friends).

But, in this section, we will explore cool gay-friendly spots to enjoy coffee and brunch during the day. Quirky bistros to visit for a cocktail or a light lunch during the evening, and laid-back, gay bars for late night out. First things first, let's find the best spots to enjoy a full morning meal.

Don't call us biased, but one of the best places to enjoy brunch — and breakfast, is by far " The Late Bird's Lisbon ". This delicious brunch is served every Sunday by the mail pool, and it includes a diversity of mouthwatering delicacies, including healthy options for the fans of fitness. Also, it's currently the only gay brunch in the town! Other great, gay-popular spots to enjoy brunch are Heim Cafe , where you can enjoy their delicious breakfast assortment, berry-topped pancakes, and waffles drizzled in homemade caramel. And, lastly, Zenith is another excellent option where, according to the locals, you can try one of the best croissants in the world, delicious pancakes and a cool atmosphere. PS: All there dishes are totally Instagrammable. 

So, if you are searching for gay cafe in Lisbon, you won't find any, however, the most popular cafes in town attract mixed crowds, with a 50% ratio of gay and straight people. Cafe Boavida is a great place to take a coffee-break from your Lisbon sightseeing or shopping tour. The cafe also serves delicious snacks, which are made from scratch, in house. The granola bowls are particularly good. Le Petit Prince Culture Cafe is another excellent spot that was inspired by the homonymous book of Antoine de Saint-Exupery. In this place, they bring you papers and pencils to sketch your thoughts while waiting for your latte!

For a cozy night out, you can either opt for Margem Sul Bar, which is both a lounge and a cabaret stage that hosts frequent drag shows. Chains Bar is another excellent gay bar with a relaxed atmosphere that makes it a perfect start for a night-out.  And, Navegadoors is a trendy cocktail bar and restaurant, perfect for dinners.

If you are traveling solo or with friends...

We know that all you wanna do (most of the times) when you are traveling solo or with friends is to have fun, explore the destination, and make new interesting contacts. This is why on this section, we are going to focus on the popular gay bars, clubs, and some naughtier places for a little more fun.

So, if you are visiting in summer, you will most probably spend your day at Lisbon's awesome gay beaches. For singles and solo travellers, we recommend Beach 19, Lisbon's popular gay nude beach, located at the south end of Costa de Caparica. It's a great place to make new and interesting contacts.

Lisbon is more of a "bear" city, and most of its popular gay bars and clubs attract bears and their admirers. Tr3s Lisboa , for example, is one of the top 3 gay bars of Lisbon, and it's open to all bears and their admirers. There are also frequent events and special nights, so don't miss to check their website before visiting. Bar 106 is another must-visit, as it's one of the longest-operating gay bars, operating since 1995. Friendly staff, handsome men, fun events, and impromptu games await you at this awesome bar. Pride Burlesque is last but definitely not least. Don't miss out their gorgeous Caipirinha and "Pastel de Nata" shot.

So, the previous bars are excellent to begin your night out, as they usually close down at 2-3 am. However, you can continue your night-out in one of the gay clubs. TRUMPS is the most popular gay club in Lisbon, that usually gets crowded after 2 am. POSH Club is another gorgeous club with frequent themed nights and fun parties. Construction Club is perfect for bears, hairy and beefy men, featuring 3 floors, two for dancing and one that works cruising space.

If you want to play a bit harder, you will be surprised from Lisbon's diversity of Gay Cruise Clubs and Saunas. Drako Club , Bar Cru and Woof X are the three exclusively cruise and fetish clubs of Lisbon, featuring dark rooms, relaxing cabins, 'big bed' areas, and frequent fetish nights. From the gay saunas, Olissipo Bath and SaunApolo 56 are the ones operating now, while there is a semi-monthly meeting of men called "Queer Lust" at Mise en Scene .

If you are a family...

Lisbon is gay-friendly and with plenty of family-friendly activities. So, that makes it the perfect getaway for gay families! In this section, we will focus on the fun things that you can do in Lisbon with your kids, places and unique experiences to enjoy together, cafes to hang out during the day, and special spots that children love. (for adults-only activities, you can check out the above sections).

The first place to start your Lisbon exploration with your kids is the Lisbon zoo , which works as a magnet for young and curious minds. There, you can see white tigers, gorillas, dolphins, lions, and a diversity of bird species. Don't miss out the special children's farm where kids can meet and cuddle small and cute animals. The gigantic Oceanario de Lisboa is another hit among families, as it's wonderful diversity of aquatic species (more than 8000 types) is awe-inspiring to watch. Just drop an e-mail beforehand to check about the weekend programmes for children. Lastly, Jamor Adventure Park is a little outside of the city, but your kids will absolute adore it. It's 15 minutes west of the city, and it's packed with family-friendly activities. If you are visiting in Summer, keep in mind that Costa da Caparica is a great gay-friendly beach where you can relax during the day, while you kids are playing at the beach. Unlike Beach 19, Lisbon's gay nudist beach, this beach is more family friendly, with less nudity and more families.

Now, if you want to give to your trip a more educational touch, then you would be happy to know that Lisbon is home to many museums and wonderful sights to see. You can spend a day or two museum-haunting, through which, don't miss out the National Azulejo Museum, the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, MUDE (Museu do Design e da Moda), and the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT). In your sightseeing tour, don't miss out Castelo de Sao Jorge, Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, Oceanario de Lisboa, Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, and Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga.

In 2010, Portugal came to be the sixth country in Europe that approved same-sex marriage. Especially after that year, the country, and especially, Lisbon, has been regarded as a gay-friendly place. Although Lisbon has witnessed a homophobic government throughout the years, gay life in Lisbon Portugal is safe and fun now. 

While visiting Lisbon, you can see that neighborhoods like Principe Real and Bairro Alto have the best gay clubs in Lisbon.

Gay Bars in Lisbon

There are some popular bars in Lisbon that attract the LGBTQ+ community. Before listing these bars, note that you start to drink late at night in these bars. Usually, drinking starts after 11 p.m. 

If you want to enjoy your time in gay bars Lisbon Portugal, you can go to neighborhoods like Bairro Alto and Principe Real. Bairro Alto tends to be more crowded compared to other areas. Sometimes, such places organize theme parties as well.

Being one of the oldest gay bars in Lisbon, 106 is a popular bar with its “message party”. It’s a party that’s held on Sundays. While entering the bar, everyone receives a number, and you write messages to the people who have these numbers. In the end, you meet new people. 

Besides the message party, live music and regular themed parties are other fun activities that 106 offers. 

Everyone can enter this bar, and drinks are mostly affordable. It’s a friendly place, so you can easily talk to people even if you have no company with you.

TR3S is a bar that’s popular among mostly older men and masculine bear men. One of the favorable features of the bar is that it has a terrace. So, you can sit outside and have a chat with others. 

The music is also not loud, so, you can still conversate with other people inside the bar as well. The music played here is 90s pop and the current popular ones. People usually drink beer at this bar. Cocktails are also favored as well. You can stop by this place in the afternoon as well. 

Shelter 

Located in Lisbon gay neighborhood, Principe Real, the Shelter opens at six p.m. Also, it offers happy hours as well. Although bears are the target community, Shelter welcomes all communities regardless of sexual orientation. 

You can listen to 80s playlists and Eurovision songs in this bar. Popular drinks that are served are craft beers, cocktails, and gins. 

Located in Bairro Alto, Side is another bar that gays prefer to go to. It’s also known as the “pink bar” because of the blare of pink inside. It’s open from six p.m. until two a.m. You can enjoy a variety of cocktails at this friendly bar.

Finalmente Club

It’s often crowded, and drag performances start at around three a.m. On Mondays, you can see great drag queens on stage. It’s a small club but it attracts gay men of all ages. 

Trumps is the largest and first gay club Lisbon hosts. It’s open to all individuals with any sexual orientation. It’s also a hetero-friendly club as well. Trumps is known to host the wildest parties back in the 80s. Today, it still hosts special events and parties. 

The club has two dance floors, and they’re on the underground floor. For a more quiet place, you can sit by the entrance. On the large dance floor, you can enjoy dance and house music. On this floor, smoking is permitted, and it has a big stage for shows. The smaller dance floor offers some pop hits, and it gets crowded on Saturdays. 

Construction

Club Construction is another club located in Principe Real. It’s mainly designed for gay men and gets crowded after two a.m. Besides men, women and couples are also welcome.

There are three floors in this club, and the first two floors are designed for dancing. The ground floor has two bar areas and a coat hanger. The first floor has balconies that see the dance floor, and the top floor has a darkroom. 

Every week, the club hosts guest DJs and throws great parties.

Lisbon hosts some popular events including Gay Pride and Queer Lisboa film festival. Such events usually take place between spring and autumn.

Gay Pride takes place every year in June, and people march on Avenida da Liberdade. It’s accompanied by music and an enthusiastic crowd. After this event, after-parties are held. Such parties can even keep on until the following weekend as well. 

Arraial Lisboa Pride

Its people and atmosphere are reminiscent of Madrid , its affordability reminds us of Berlin. The Portuguese language and warm weather brings us to São Paulo, while the trams « cable cars » that line the steep streets are San Francisco  worthy. All of this is Lisbon , a tasty mix nestled in southwest Europe. 

Lisbon is a beautiful city with picturesque charm, and it is becoming more popular on the international gay scene. The majority of gay locations are in Bairro Alto or Principe Real, two neighborhoods near each other in the historical center of Lisbon. Bairro Alto is dubbed the gay district of Lisbon. 

There is a subway but not too many lines to get around, but you will easily be able to get to the essential points of interests. Buses are much more frequent, and you can navigate the entire city. Whichever you decide, don’t drive! It is extremely dangerous and more so for those not used to driving. What is good to know, is that taxis are prevalent, and cheap!

The best way to get to Bairro Alto is by funicular « Elevator da Gloria » which starts from the city center (Restauradores Square). Once you’ve reached the top, go to Miradouro de San Pedro de Alcantara (Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara) which offers breathtaking views of the city, including all the many monuments. 

Just opposite is the charming wine bar, Solar do Vinho do Porto (45 Rua de S. Pedro de Alcântara) which is situated in the magnificent Ludovico Palace. Here you will find a warm and comfortable atmosphere, along with many different brands and varieties of Port Wine: wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts will not be disappointed.

Spend the day shopping, as Bairro offers boutiques such as the Men Spot (Rua São Marçal 168A), which has everything you’ll need for your Lisboan holiday. The local way of life is as follows: dine at 9pm, hit the bars around 11pm, and then venture to the club at 2am. 

Best gay bars in Lisbon 

Most of the gay bars in Lisbon  are small. The narrow streets (where it is allowed to wander with a beverage in hand) fill up quickly, and the warm weather makes it ideal to stay outside, chat and make new friends. Most of the gay bars are found on and around Rua da Barroca, but one of the places to be is the Sétimo Céu (54 Travessa da Espera), probably the biggest gay bar in Bairro Alto. Upon leaving the bar, take a left and stop at the corner. This is the meet-up spot for the hottest guys in the city—a true place to be seen, in the open air. 10 minutes away on foot is the Marais Lisboa (28 Rua Santa Catarina). Though out of the gay area, it still remains a must. 

For clubs, Trumps (104 B Rua da Imprensa Nacional) is one of the largest, and attracts a young and trendy crowd. Construction (84 Rua Cecilio De Sousa) attracts an older and hairy ‘manly’ crowd and their fans. Finalmente (38 Rua Da Palmeira) is a very small but legendary bar, and is considered to be the first Lisbon gay club (the drag shows here are not to be missed!).

And finally don’t forget to check out the beach, Costa de Caparica, which is 15 kilometers south of Lisbon (n°17 et 19) and is without a doubt one of the most beautiful gay beaches in Europe.

Lisbon Pride Village (Arraial Pride)

At Arraial Pride (Pride Village), the party comes to Lisbon’s largest, most beautiful, and historical square: Praça do Comércio (Market Square). The open-air setting by the sea provides the perfect backdrop for an all-day (and all-night) party. Husbands Matthew Schueller and Michael Lindsay share their LGBTQ+ secrets for Lisbon, Portugal.

The happy, smart, and sexy duo are no strangers to Out Travelers, who were introduced to the married world travelers and their meet-cute in our Spring 2022 print edition. The social media savvy Schueller came out on his YouTube channel in a viral video that inspired Lindsay to come out himself and record a video reply, albeit a year later and 1,300 miles away. The rest is history, as they say.

The pair married in 2018, and when they’re not posting about their travels and life together on their social media, Schueller works as a nurse and Lindsay is a practicing dentist.

There are limitless great options in Lisbon, but the following are a few of my favorites. Leonetta is an adorable Italian-influenced restaurant in Alto Barrio serving a great variety of fresh seafood amongst an aesthetic dining room and pink-walled patio. For something off the beaten path and absolutely worth an evening, Restaurante Pastanaga is an unassuming eatery close to Green Street. While small and requiring a reservation, the quality of dishes and service is unmatched. The staff not only made us feel at home, but the sommelier gave us an entire wine tasting experience to ensure we knew exactly which bottle we wanted from the menu–something I’ve never experienced at a restaurant before! Lastly, for an incredible view along with fantastic cocktails and, check out Java Rooftop near the Time Out Market.

One of the best known destinations for the LGBTQ+ community is The Late Birds Hotel. A 4-star gay owned and run urban resort in the Alto Barrio. Complete with an outdoor pool, garden terrace, and bar, The Late Birds Hotel is the perfect place not only to sleep but to meet other travelers and have a truly unique experience. It is a little paradise in the heights of Lisbon.

Lisbon Portugal is perhaps the most underrated, and yet fastest growing up-and-coming LGBTQ+ destination in the world. We had the privilege of attending Pride last year, and there’s no better time to highlight the LGBTQ+ culture there. I felt more welcome and free to be myself than I usually feel in my home city of Portland. Take a walk down Pink Street and you’ll feel like you’re back at a Pride festival. The city is vibrant and full of great opportunities for a night out. Alto Barrio is the well known gayborhood of the city, but even in tourist-centric Baixa, you’re likely to see a drag queen who frequently roller skates and performs down Rua Augusta. It speaks to the nature of the city, open, friendly, and unabashedly gay.

Starting off with caffeine, grab a latte at Copenhagen Coffee Lab. We were impressed by the quality of their espresso and the dishes they served alongside! Try the avocado toast – it does not disappoint. As it warms up in the afternoon, head to Pitcher Cocktails along the waterfront to grab the best piña colada in a pineapple you’ll ever have. For happy hour, you can’t go wrong with grabbing a spritzer and Pastel de Bacalhau along any of the outdoor cafes in Alto Barrio. Later in the evening, find yourself at one of Lisbon’s most well known and popular clubs, including Trumps, and Posh Club.

You can’t go to Lisbon without trying the infamous Pastéis de Nata. The Portuguese egg tart is sweet and decadent. You can get it at nearly any of the bakeries and cafes in the city, but Manteigaria is a clear favorite location. Make sure to stroll down to Praça do Comércio and marvel at Arco du Rua Augusta. Shop for some new clothes or your favorite luxury goods along Av. da Liberdade. And lastly, head to Time Out Market for an aperitif and a great curation of local restaurants. It’s the perfect place to hang out for happy hour and to experience the diversity of Portuguese cuisine.

Pink Street is perhaps one of the best known Instagrammable spots in Lisbon. It can be crowded, but it is super cute to get a photo surrounded by pink. The upper roads of Alto Barrio are exceptionally great photo opportunities, given that some of the roads are built for the trolleys. The most widely known is Tram no. 28 which runs from Martim Moniz to Campo de Ourique. To go even higher, take a hike or grab a cab to Castelo de S. Jorge for a panoramic view of the city.

“Few places have a more special place in my heart than Lisbon. On an evening when I was particularly not feeling too well, I ordered a pizza to eat in my hotel room. As I sat on my bed watching a show, I looked out the window only to see that six feet from my hotel room window was another apartment, inside of which a man was dancing to Kylie Minogue while dusting the shelves in his room. His entire room was filled with model cows. It was the strangest sight I’d ever seen, so of course I had to yell hello from my window. We immediately became friends and ended up hanging out several times throughout Pride week. He had us over for dinner, and I gifted him a model cow before I left. Strange, but so serendipitously incredible.”

Uncork is one of Europe’s oldest (and most famous) wine regions. Not only are the vintages world-class, the verdant terrain and snaking river make an excellent backdrop while you wine & dine al fresco.

Gay-Welcoming Porto is a true hidden gem. Get lost in its intricate alleyways while appreciating the juxtaposition of classic and modern architecture.

UNESCO World Heritage Sintra is a fantastical city in Portugal’s lush rolling hills. Its historic city-centre streets are lined with pastel palaces, mansions and houses that look like they were plucked from a Disney movie.

Get acquainted with Lisbon’s surreal cityscape either aboard one of her famous trams or from her countless  miradouros  (viewpoints). After you’ve taken in the vantage, slowly devour her endearing neighbourhoods from trendy Bairro Alto to Gay-Welcoming Príncipe Real. In the evenings, enjoy the city’s very late nightlife, including some of Europe’s best gay bars and clubs. By day’s end, you’ll have fallen under Lisbon’s spell.

Best Time to Visit: Portugal is one of Europe’s warmer countries, so temperatures, crowds, and hotel prices can be unbearable in the summer. Spring or fall (April/May and September/October) is a splendid time to travel here.

The Golden Rules of Queer Travel

It’s a curious thing, queer travel : When I’m at home, my queerness is an inalienable part of me, a concrete fact; but when I go abroad it activates like a magnet, drawing me close to certain people and places, drawing those people and places closer to me. It’s a joy that borders on the ecstatic, to find yourself—and others like yourself—wherever you are. So if you must travel, I recommend being gay while doing it. It’s not for everyone, but it can really lighten things up.

Queer travel is an ancient human tradition, the subject of films from chosen family travels in Under the Tuscan Sun to drag queens hitting the road in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar ; Transamerica’s mother-son road trip to Pirates of the Caribbean ’s polyamory cruise. (Not to mention queer desire gone awry in The Talented Mr. Ripley .) More recently, it’s become an economy of scale: It’s now a $200 billion dollar slice of the trillion-dollar global tourism market, according to the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association . These dollars are generated by cruises, walking tours, resorts, weddings and honeymoons, and Pride celebrations —with more opportunities doubtless being invented as you read this. Soon enough, I expect even straight people will travel queerly, if the contours of modern tourism bear any resemblance to those of popular culture or the present zeitgeist. (You know how everyone’s now saying “very demure, very mindful”? A trans woman came up with the trend on TikTok. )

Belonging to any segment of the LGBTQ+ world comes with its own rituals and routines. Travel often involves leaving them behind—for better or for worse—and ushers in a whole new set of rules. This is where the golden rules of queer travel come in, informed by a survey of 15 queer travelers and experts. Sure, they’re helpful principles to travel by, whether you’re queer or not. But these are for us, by us. Let them be your beacons wherever your travels take you.

Vietnam gets an Equality index of 54 out of 100 from Equaldex, a score which is dragged down by the discrete nature of the culture more so than prevalent stigma.

1. Get culturally acquainted

Rule number one of queer travel is to know where you’re going. This is important for travelers of all kinds, but for some, it is an urgent matter of safety and security. There is a pervasive fear among queer travelers about encountering prejudice, or straight-up danger, when visiting an unfamiliar space or society, so even though tourists—queer or not—are often not held to the same set of rules as locals, it’s good practice (and a balm for worries) to get concrete and factual information about a place, particularly its laws and attitudes toward LGBTQ+ citizens.

Equaldex is a digital tool that assigns each nation an “Equality” score between 1 and 100, and you can customize your search to see where things like gay marriage or gender-affirming care are legal and available. That said, data points are just one part of the picture, and these cultural nuances often look different in practice. For example, Dan Dao , a travel and food writer who regularly contributes to Condé Nast Traveler , is based in Vietnam , Equality index 54. “There’s a Pride parade, but there’s also a mind-your-business culture,” Dao says. Public displays of affection, for one example, can be uncomfortable whether you’re a straight or gay couple. “It’s a very, very open place,” Dao continues. “But even in a place that’s safe, it’s important to know what those norms are.”

2. Stay gay

For Brandon Berkson, the CEO of the hospitality guide Hotels Above Par , the downiest comfort he can find in a property involves some third-party authentication of its queer-inclusive values. He looks at Misterb&b or for the approval seal of Travel Advocacy Group (TAG), which is spun off from the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association. “Both are goldmines for finding chic, LBGTQ+-friendly stays,” Berkson says. Or you can book queer-owned and operated hotels directly, and these tend to abound in gay sanctuary cities (Berkson recommends Maxwell Residences in Puerto Vallarta.)

3. Find the pharmacy

“I tend to find the LGBTQ+ pharmacy wherever I’m going,” Dao adds, referring to places where travelers can find medications like PrEP or test for STIs. “So I have peace of mind, even if I never go.” He uses the Gay Passport , which publishes detailed city guides alongside photos of hunky male tourists. In addition to itinerary recommendations, you can also find information about local clinics and pharmacies, down to a typical cost quote for STI and HIV testing.

4. Download a VPN

Anyone can have a virtual private network. It’s a little digital plug-in that lets you circumvent a local network by teleporting your online session to anywhere else in the world. I downloaded ExpressVPN before I moved to Japan so I could continue to watch The Real Housewives on Peacock, but my friend Justin Fenner , who covers grooming for the Robb Report, says chicly that it was “the only way to get any work done” abroad, should you find yourself, say, in Beijing and need to access the New York Times . Other intrepid friends have used VPNs to access dating apps in countries where they’re blocked or restricted, but this qualifies as very risky behavior, and not the kind I can personally endorse.

Social media creator Allyssa Leaton hosted queer picnics while living in Buenos Aires in order to meet queer locals and expats.

5. Get to know the locals

The best intelligence on any given place, and particularly its queer scene, comes from soliciting the locals. Sometimes it helps to send out a flare. “It takes an active effort to connect to a community,” says social media creator Allyssa Leaton, @TheLesbianPassport on all her channels. While living in Buenos Aires , and feeling unmoored from her own community, Leaton decided to host queer picnics and advertised them on TikTok . She ended up meeting hundreds of people, a merry mix of locals and expats. “There are still group chats going on,” she says.

6. Embrace a sense of romance

Do you know who is also locally intelligent? That cutie you follow who’s based in Mexico City . The worst they can say is nothing. For short trips, a dating app might be the only queer travel guide you need. “Say what you will,” Leaton adds with a sigh, “but dating apps are a great resource, even if it doesn’t turn into a romantic connection.”

7. Get customized advice

“I only take travel advice from someone who I’d trust to give me interior design tips,” say Daniel Tucker and Dilan Walpola , co-founders of the design firm Riad &partner , based in  Morocco . It’s how they ended up at a kiki ball in an 11th-century monastery and a rave on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, after a perilous drive up the mountain: Seeing the sun rise over the Sorrento cliffs just as Sarra Wild 's set ended made it well worth the journey.

8. When you want to err on the safe side, ask for two beds

A few people I spoke to for this story mentioned, if a little ashamedly, a recurring anxiety when checking into a hotel. “Nothing makes me happier than to tell them that my same-sex partner and I only need one bed in the room,” says Adam Hurly, a travel writer based in Lisbon . “But I take extra precaution when booking a hotel room or Airbnb in conservative or religious places.” When in doubt, he’ll book a room with two beds, even if only to use one. The other can act as clothing storage, a luxuriously flat couch, or as a second bed.

9. Always hit the gay bar

Wherever you find yourself, find yourself a gay bar. If nothing else, they are local temples of gay culture. Many also serve delicious food. A visit to a gay bar often also provides access to a gayborhood, which can lead to discoveries of all kinds. But anecdotal reports also indicate that the smaller a gay scene is, the more concentrated its energy can become. One of the most memorable nights of Dao’s life happened when she showed up alone at the only gay bar in Reykjavik . “I spent the night with the drag queens,” he remembers fondly.

10. Seek the rarer lesbian bar

It’s been four years since the Lesbian Bar Project revealed that the entire inventory of lesbian bars in the United States is around 33 (compared to the more than 800 that cater to gay men). Still, compared to the rest of the world, this is a surplus. If gay bars are temples, lesbian bars are shrines whose scarcity lends them an even profounder sanctity—and one certainly worth pilgrimage. Hong Kong has L’Paradis ; Frankfurt has Le Gata , which bills itself as one of Europe’s oldest lesbian bars (born in 1971). Leaton recommends Everywhere Is Queer , an app that maintains a global map of queer businesses who have registered to appear on the list. You can find lawyers and life coaches, but you can also find spots like Nathálie , a chic queer-owned wine bar in Boston.

11. Seek group fun, even if you’re solo

There are plenty of organizations that happily fold intrepid single travelers into group experiences, like Walking Women . “We run lesbian holidays for those who want to be sure they’re with like-minded women,” Ginny Lunn, a co-owner, tells me. The group also hosts trips in Malaga and the French Alps , and vets hotels and guides on their hospitality toward queer travelers. “[Being in a group] can help people feel less insecure about some destinations,” she says. And you never know what will happen when you reach out while alone: It was on a solo trip to Spain where Ginny met her first partner some 40 years ago.

12. Don’t go to Paris; go to Gay Paris

The very concept of “queer travel” can offer a new frame for trip-planning, especially when it comes to cities like New York , Paris , or Tokyo that are both highly visitable and too large to digest in one go. “There's a lot of queer history and art in these cultural capitals,” says historian Andrew Lear, whose Oscar Wilde Tours scaffolds trips around LGBTQ+ museums and spaces. A recent trip to India included a visit to Hawa Mahal , the pink palace of Jaipur, as well as lunch with Manvendra Singh Gohil , a queer activist and the world’s only openly gay prince thus far.

13. Be a queer diplomat

Dan Ware, whose Toto Tours bring groups of gay men to places like Bhutan and Botswana , often reminds his guests that they are “ambassadors” for the gay community, but this takes on a new significance when visiting a country where homosexuality bears negative stigmas. “Some locals have never encountered people like us,” Ware says. “First—and lasting—impressions will be formed.” He breaks it down easily: Show respect for everyone you meet, admiration for the traditions for you witness, and gratitude for absolutely everything else.

From an anonymous tipster: “If you’re in a place where the tap water isn’t drinkable, then it definitely isn’t douche-able either.” Bottled water does the trick. Or boil water from the tap—and then wait for it to cool.

15. Expedite your trip through security

TSA scans at airports operate on the male-female binary. Once you step into that giant millimeter ray vision tube, the attending agent clocks your gender expression and hits one of two buttons that indicate what anatomy the machine should expect. In other words, anything nonbinary may be subject to additional scrutiny. But the process can be sidestepped by those enrolled in TSA PreCheck or Global Entry . “I continually fail body scanners and get asked invasive questions,” says Lindsey Danis, a queer travel writer, who has previously written about the topic for Condé Nast Traveler . “Joining [an expedited security lane] makes airports way less stressful.”

16. Pack, don’t “pack”

Those traveling with wearable prosthetics need not fear airport security, though it’s generally recommended that they’re stowed in your carry-on ahead of time. “I’d make sure they’re discreetly packaged up just in case your bag does get pulled,” says Alex, the mononymous founder of Transthetics , of his brand’s popular Joystick .

17. Be conscious of your ID

Nobody in transportation security is particularly invested in verifying your gender marker on your passport, which, when issued in many countries like the United States, has options for M, F, or X. But not all airlines have implemented the X marker yet, so while the TSA recommends that your gender markers match, “you should generally not have problems with a gender expression that does not match your ID,” according to Joelle Maslak, who edits and contributes to the Travel While Trans project. But note that the rules change when traveling internationally, which may necessitate confirming that your identification matches the info you’ve supplied elsewhere, like on your boarding pass.

19. Continue to carry on

As a senior director for Parfums Christian Dior’s PR efforts, Andrew Favorito might spend a few weeks ping-ponging between Cannes to Los Angeles to Aspen , so he has to pack nimbly but chicly. “I pack jewels and valuables in my carry-on, especially [when I take] connecting flights” he tells me. He also recommends carrying-on a version of your “vacation uniform,” as well as of course having a vacation uniform : a default and flattering outfit that can be worn while walking around town but also be worn to a nice lunch.

20. Explore unexpectedly

At first, the writer Lindsey Danis dreaded their trip to Kentucky , the state that brought us Republican senator Mitch McConnell and iconic homophobe Kim Davis. “I had low expectations,” they said. But they went anyway—and, a bourbon tasting later, booked a return trip to explore the naturally splendid Red River Gorge, and the artsy enclave of Berea, where the writer bell hooks lived and worked for decades; it’s now home to the bell hooks center , perhaps one of the most radically queer corridors in the state Kentucky.

21. Finally, remember that kindness begets kindness

One of the most celebrated queer travelers and writers in history, the late Jan Morris was a former British spy who went on to write over 20 books. Her prose painted portraits of cities like New York and Hong Kong in gorgeous texture. (Approaching Manhattan by road, it rose before her like “a last outpost on the edge of the continent.”) After she transitioned, in 1964, she returned to her hometown in North Wales expecting shock and prejudice. Instead, she found that people treated her the same. “Everything good in the world is kindness,” she once told The Guardian . “If you are not sure what you think about something, the most useful questions are these: Are you being kind? Are they being kind? That usually gives you the answer.”

Florida quietly removes LGBTQ+ travel info from state website

Tallahassee, Fla. — Key West, Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors and St. Petersburg are among several Florida cities that have long been top U.S. destinations for LGBTQ+ tourists. So it came as a surprise this week when travelers learned that Florida's tourism marketing agency quietly removed the “LGBTQ Travel” section from its website sometime in the past few months.

Business owners who cater to Florida's LGBTQ+ tourists said Wednesday that it marked the latest attempt by officials in the state to erase the LGBTQ+ community. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis previously championed a bill to forbid classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity, and supported a ban on gender-affirming care for minors, as well as a law meant to keep children out of drag shows.

“It's just disgusting to see this,” said Keith Blackburn, who heads the Greater Fort Lauderdale LGBT Chamber of Commerce. “They seem to want to erase us.”

The change to Visit Florida's website was first reported by NBC News, which noted a search query still pulls up some listings for LGBTQ+-friendly places despite the elimination of the section.

John Lai, who chairs Visit Florida's board, didn't respond to an email seeking comment Tuesday. Dana Young, Visit Florida's CEO and president, didn't respond to a voicemail message Wednesday, and neither did the agency's public relations director.

Visit Florida is a public-private partnership between the state of Florida and the state's tourism industry. The state contributes about $50 million each year to the quasi-public agency from two tourism and economic development funds.

Florida is one of the most popular states in the U.S. for tourists, and tourism is one of its biggest industries. Nearly 141 million tourists visited Florida in 2023, with out-of-state visitors contributing more than $102 billion to Florida’s economy.

Before the change, the LGBTQ+ section on Visit Florida's website had read, “There’s a sense of freedom to Florida’s beaches, the warm weather and the myriad activities — a draw for people of all orientations, but especially appealing to a gay community looking for a sense of belonging and acceptance.”

Blackburn said the change and other anti-LGBTQ+ policies out of Tallahassee make it more difficult for him to promote South Florida tourism since he encounters prospective travelers or travel promoters who say they don't want to do business in the state.

Last year, for instance, several civil rights groups issued a travel advisory for Florida, saying that policies championed by DeSantis and Florida lawmakers are “openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals.”

But visitors should also understand that many Florida cities are extremely inclusive, with gay elected officials and LGBTQ+-owned businesses, and they don't reflect the policies coming from state government, Blackburn added.

“It’s difficult when these kinds of stories come out, and the state does these things, and we hear people calling for a boycott,” Blackburn said. “On one level, it’s embarrassing to have to explain why people should come to South Florida and our destination when the state is doing these things.”
