Journey to the West is a Chinese television series adapted from the classic 16th-century novel of the same title . The first 11 episodes of the series were first broadcast on CCTV in China on 1 October 1986. The series became an instant classic in China and was praised for being one of the most original and faithful interpretations. The series was budgeted for 30 episodes, due to budgetairy reasons, five of the planned episodes were left out. The screenplay for these left out episodes was rewritten and lengthened. Also some more portions of the original novel were covered in the second season, which was released in 1999. CCTV released the entire series online on YouTube [1] [2] as an edited version (all episodes are 45 minutes long) with English subtitles. The second season starts in the edited version with the capture of the Tang Monk (footage of the original episode 3). After that the edited version follows the original order. However, episode 5 Meeting immortals at Peacock Platform of the second season was deleted and parts of the content were integrated into the fourth episode Obstacle at Lion Camel Ridge making a total of 40 episodes instead of the original 41. [3]

Season 1 has 25 episodes and covers 74 chapters of the novel. The first trial episode was aired on 1 October 1986, and filming lasted until 1987. It was aired as a whole series in 1988. With the limited but relatively new special effects, the series received a viewership rate of 89.4% in 1987. [4] The series has been rebroadcast every year since then. As of 2012, the series has been repeated on Chinese local channels more than 2,000 times. [5]

Due to budgetary issues, five of the initially planned episodes were not filmed:

  • Dangerous crossing at Heaven Reaching River (险渡通天河), covering chapters 47-49
  • Capturing the Azure Bull Demon (收伏青牛怪), covering chapters 50-52
  • The real and fake Monkey King (真假美猴王), covering chapters 56-58
  • Obstacle at Lion Camel Ridge (遇阻狮驼岭), covering chapters 74-77
  • Rescuing children in a city (救难小儿城), [6] covering chapters 78-79

For season 2, the screenplay of these five episodes was rewritten into 16 episodes (covers another 25 chapters of the novel). Filming began in 1998 and finished in 1999. It was broadcast on CCTV in 2000. The internal story of the second season has the four protagonists relating to Emperor Taizong of Tang via flashbacks of their travels and adventures, (namely those episodes not depicted in the first series) upon their return to China. Season 2 differs from the format of the first season, as most episodes end on a cliffhanger, with conflicts being resolved and new ones encountered in the middle of episodes in a more fluid timeline.

The use of electric music that was perceived as "Western" and "modern" in the "traditional Chinese story" was the issue of debate at the time. [9]

The original lead actors of Journey to the West (1986) — Liu Xiao Ling Tong , Chi Chongrui and Ma Dehua — reprised their roles in Wu Cheng'en and Journey to the West , a 2010 television series about Wu Cheng'en and his inspiration for writing the novel Journey to the West . Sha Wujing , however, was portrayed by Liu Dagang because Yan Huaili, who played the character in 1986, died in April 2009. [ citation needed ]

10 Most Irresponsible Dragon Ball Wishes in the Dragon Ball Franchise, Ranked

Dragon ball unveils 6 new limited-edition illustrations for debut asahi collaboration starring goku, vegeta & more, 10 times goku was his own worst enemy in dragon ball.

Journey To The West is one of the most influential stories of all time. First published during the Ming Dynasty, Wu Cheng'en's epic is considered one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature.

The story has influenced thousands of different works in all forms of media. References and retellings of the story continue to appear, with the currently-airing The God Of High School suggesting that it too will intertwine with the epic tale. However, if you want more adaptations of the Monkey King's journey, here are five of the best reimaginings of Journey To The West .

  • Dragon Ball

Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball   needs no introduction. Since it started in 1984, the series has been a smash hit, spawning a massive franchise that is famous all over the world. In interviews, Toriyama has said that when he made Dragon Ball , he wanted to create something with the basic theme of Journey to the West but with " a little kung fu" added in .

Because of this, the series is full of references to the classic work. For instance, the lead character of the manga, Son Goku, is named after the Japanese reading of Sun Wukong, the protagonist of Journey to the West . Much like his namesake, Son Goku uses a magical size-changing staff and a flying cloud during his adventures. And, both Goku and Sun Wukong spend their time looking for magical artifacts that are said to  bestow a great prize on the person who collects all of them .

One of the most direct references to Journey to the West is the Ox-King. The Ox-King is the name of a demon found in the original work and both he and his Dragon Ball counterpart are first encountered in a castle that sits atop a flaming mountain. In the World of Akira Toriyama artbooks, Toriyama has drawn many images of Dragon Ball 's core cast as their corresponding Journey To The West character, showing just how close the two stories are.

Enslaved: Odessey to the West

British development studio, Ninja Theory, released Enslaved: Odyssey To The West on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010. It's an action-adventure game that takes the story of Journey to the West and sets it in the future. After a global war, most of humanity is wiped out and the world becomes overrun by murderous robots.

The player takes control of Monkey ( played by Andy Serkis ) who wakes up in a prison cell on a slave ship. During an escape attempt, Monkey causes the ship to crash. Once he recovers from the crash, Monkey finds that Trip, another prisoner, has placed a slave headband on him, forcing him to comply with her demand to escort her back to her home village, a journey that is very reminiscent of the one that Sun Wukong takes in the original story.

Other characters from the original tale also make an appearance during the game, including Pigsy, who, in this version of the tale, helps lead Trip and Monkey to a giant robot called “Leviathan." Pigsy also got a DLC pack, called "Pigsy’s Perfect Ten." This mission pack is set before the start of the game and focuses on Pigsy trying to build a robot friend.

Both the game and its DLC received very good reviews from gaming publications, most of whom commended the game's beautiful environments and high-quality voice acting. However, the game didn't sell as many copies as hoped and Namco Bandai decided to cancel the planned sequel before it entered development.

Kazuya Minekura's Saiyuki was first serialized in the magazine GFantasy between 1997 to 2002. It has spawned a massive franchise that includes sequels, anime adaptations and even stage musicals. The series is set in a world where demons, magic and modern technology all co-exist and intermingle.

When peaceful demons suddenly turn violent, the Sanbutsushin commands Genjyo Sanz to travel to India to prevent a mysterious group of people from resurrecting the Ox-Demon-King, Gyumaoh. On this journey, Sanz is accompanied by Son Goku, Sha Gojyo and Cho Hakkai. However, these companions are not what they seem. In fact, they are all demons who are only kept under control by the magical trinkets they wear. The series is known for its action as well as its bishōnen-influenced male character designs. This, mixed with its unusual setting means that the series has a unique visual style that sets it apart from other adaptations of Journey to the West.

Unruly Heroes

Created in 2019 by Magic Design Studios, Unruly Heroes was released on the PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One  and the PlayStation 4 . The game allows players to play as Sanzang, Wukong, Kihong and Sandmon. Each character has different abilities and players must swap between these characters to solve complex platforming challenges. The game was praised for its fluid character animations and highly detailed backgrounds, as well as for its excellent co-op play.

However, while the game is heavily influenced by Journey to the West it also heavily changes the narrative, turning the story into a light-hearted comedy that only has superficial relations to the original source material.

The Forbidden Kingdom

Released in 2008, The Forbidden Kingdom is the first time action legends Jackie Chan and Jet Li have co-starred   together. It features an all-star cast and was directed by Rob Minkoff. The film tells the story of Jason Tripitikas, a teen from South Boston. While browsing in an old store, Tripitikas finds a golden staff. During a robbery, the store's owner tells Tripitaka to return the staff to its rightful owner. Agreeing with the man's request, Tripitaka flees but ends up falling off a roof.

When Tripitaka wakes up, he finds that he has been transported to mythical China and now has to save the world from an evil warlord who has turned the Monkey King to stone. The film was commended for its impressive fight choreography and intense and innovative fight scenes, though many reviewers criticized the film's pacing.

From accurate retellings of the original legends to series that use the myth as a jumping-off point to all-new narratives, Journey to the West continues to be a fountain of inspiration. There is no doubt that the Monkey King and his companions will be going on many more journeys and inspiring countless new writers for decades to come.

'Only Murders in the Building' Finally Delivers the Dark Side of the Arconia

Only two episodes into its fourth season and Only Murders in the Building is already amping up its most recent mystery. While the Arconia has always had its secrets , a whole new side of the building was revealed in “Gates of Heaven.” Following the murder of Sazz ( Jane Lynch ), Oliver ( Martin Short ) and Mabel ( Selena Gomez ) realize that the bullet that killed their friend was likely meant for Charles ( Steve Martin ). Thus, their investigation into the west side of the building gets underway. But what awaits them is something much darker and more twisted than anything they’ve experienced before , even in a building with so much murder. It’s the perfect way to heighten the mystery and up the ante of the show overall.

The West Side of the Arconia Introduces a New Cast of Characters

The Arconia has long been home to a fascinating and quirky set of personalities . From the main trio to Uma ( Jackie Hoffman ) to Sting . But the west side of the building sets up a whole new slew of players who take the oddities to new levels. Charles lines up several potential suspects for his friends to investigate. The two head over to the opposite end of the building to which they’d never before ventured and waste no time infiltrating the accused. They first meet Vince Fish ( played by comedy legend Richard Kind ). The eccentric new addition is the perfect way to set up the eccentricities that await them in this “strange new world.” Suffering from pink eye, he wears an eye patch and has an uncomfortable knowledge about the main trio. He’s certainly kind and accommodating, but almost to an off-putting extent. While many of the Arconia’s east side residents can be a bit cold, the overzealous welcome definitely makes him an interesting suspect . His aforementioned knowledge of the three, particularly Charles’ habits of watching the courtyard, also suggests that he knows much about the ever-mysterious building.

The Making of 'Only Murders in the Building' Season 1 Was Pure Murder

There's a twist that even Cinda Canning couldn't see coming.

Vince introduces Oliver and Mabel to some neighbors, Alfonzo ( Desmin Borges ), Inez ( Daphne Rubin-Vega ), and ( Lilian Rubelo ), inviting them to play a game aptly named “Oh Hell.” It’s both a comical and tense introduction for the characters, who all seem a little too tightly knit together. Alfonzo becomes an obvious suspect, thanks to his disdain for Charles, with whom his wife, Inez constantly attempts long-distance flirting. But the show throws one heck of a curveball when it introduces a weird tradition that the four participate in: eating from a ham hung up in the shower. For every nuance that the East Side characters, such as Howard ( Michael Cyril Creighton ), the Arconia's west side characters are downright frightening at times (albeit incredibly funny at the same time). But for all their peculiarity, something even darker lurks just next door.

The Arconia’s West Holds a Frightening Secret

The building’s western tenants may be mysterious and quirky, but they also guard a strange secret. Upon entering the far side of the Arconia, Mabel and Oliver realize that one of the apartments, which Charles suspects, has a keypad door lock. Compared to the east side of the building, this half is not nearly as well-kept and appears to be stuck in time . While this adds to the eeriness, the more advanced security system sticks out like a sore thumb. Adding to the mystery , the newly introduced characters avoid speaking of the tenant, Dudenoff. So, naturally, Mabel and Oliver find a way in.

Though the show has explored the bowels of the building and a seemingly haunted theater , the mysterious apartment is one of the most off-putting locations yet. Its deteriorating and unsettling design is a brilliant way to up the ante with the Arconia. Adding to the mystery is a pig living in the bathtub. But the most important discovery is that the windows have been pried open recently and allow for a straight shot into Charles’ apartment. Then, someone arrives and aggressively tries to get into the apartment. And just when it seems like the heroes are caught, the unseen intruder vanishes. While the show has never failed to combine comedy with suspense, these few seconds exemplify that. Putting the main characters in a mysterious place and trapping them in a confined space with no way out while impending doom is banging on the door is genuinely frightening. It makes the entire west side, and by extension, the Arconia as a whole, feel truly dangerous and takes away the protection that home is supposed to represent .

Only Murders in the Building has a long history of surprising audiences with great twists, and its latest is no exception. The halls of the Arconia’s newly explored west side are filled with secrets and danger like never before. As the team sets out to find out who killed their beloved friend, Sazz (and with the recent announcement of a Season 5 on the way ), the show has once again proved that there are still many more mysteries to uncover within the walls of the Arconia .

Only Murders in the Building is available to stream on Hulu in the U.S.

Only Murders in the Building

Three strangers share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one. When a grisly death occurs inside their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building, the trio suspects murder and employs their precise knowledge of true crime to investigate the truth. Perhaps even more explosive are the lies they tell one another. Soon, the endangered trio comes to realize a killer might be living among them as they race to decipher the mounting clues before it's too late.

Don't miss these 5 art exhibits running in Los Angeles right now

See the Best in Low exhibit at Peterson Automotive Museum

Get in on the new California gold rush with this guide to the best art to see in LA right now like the Best in Low exhibit at the Peterson Automotive Museum. Photo courtesy of The Peterson Automotive Museum

Called the new California gold rush, gallerists from around the globe are flocking to Los Angeles to set up West Coast outposts. Mega art dealers like Sean Kelly, Vito Schnabel Gallery, David Zwirner and Hauser & Wirth have all expanded with LA locations. And in 2019, Frieze launched an annual contemporary art fair in LA (the next one runs from February 20–23, 2025, at Santa Monica Airport).

The reason for all the attention? Some have pointed to the fresh energy of LA artists, a scene that’s eager to embrace underrepresented groups and the sheer space available in the sprawling city. Others admit that the year-round sunshine doesn’t hurt either. All these reasons also make LA an excellent city to be an art spectator. If you’d like to get in on the gold rush, this is the best art to see in LA right now.

LACMAEdRuschaNowThen.jpg

ED RUSCHA / NOW THEN by Ed Ruscha at LACMA

Ruscha’s cross-media retrospective , which runs through October 6, 2024, is an ideal LA art exhibit as the artist has lived and worked here for decades and drawn much of his inspiration from the city. Explore Ruscha’s love for landscapes and typography through paintings, drawings, photographs and printmaking.

Score tickets: Adult admission for non-LA County residents to LACMA is $28 ($23 for residents). Walk-up tickets are available, though buying timed-entry tickets online in advance is recommended because time slots can sell out.

How to get there: The museum is located in LA’s Miracle Mile neighborhood, near the 10 and 101 freeways.

Make a day of it: Hit up multiple museums — the La Brea Tar Pits , Craft Contemporary , Petersen Automotive Museum , and Academy Museum of Motion Pictures are all within walking distance.

Top tip: While you’re at LACMA, be sure to swing by Zev Yaroslavsky Plaza to see Chinese artist Ai Weiwei’s 12 zodiac head sculptures.

Homage to Nature by Mineo Mizuno at the Huntington

The California-based artist Mineo Mizuno created a site-specific sculpture at the Huntington from fallen timber gathered from the forests of the Sierra Nevada, where the artist lives. Homage to Nature , which is on display through May 25, 2029, explores both the forest’s susceptibility to destruction and potential for new growth. Situated in an outdoor garden, the sculpture fits right in at the Huntington, which is itself an homage to nature, with about 130 acres of botanical gardens, plus a massive research library and art museum.

Score tickets: Admission to the Huntington is $29 for adults.

How to get there: The Huntington is off the 110 Freeway in San Marino, near Pasadena and about 12 miles northeast of downtown LA.

Make a day of it: Snag a reservation at the Huntington’s Rose Garden Tea Room and feast on house-made scones and lobster rolls. Then, head to Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena, one of LA’s most impressive booksellers, and grab a literary-inspired cocktail at the onsite bar, the 1894 .

Top tip: Save time for the gift shop, which stocks everything from origami paper to prickly pear cocktail syrup to guaculeles (ukuleles made to look like avocados).

Best in Low , by various artists at Petersen Automotive Museum

Celebrate the craft and culture of cruising with this ode to lowriders that runs through spring 2025. Best in Low is especially timely as LA just lifted a 1988 ban on lowrider cruising earlier this year. You’ll get an eyeful of elaborately tricked out Impalas, Monte Carlos and Cutlass Supremes, and leave with a greater appreciation not only for the vibrantly painted exteriors, but the souped up interiors and hydraulics, too.

Score tickets: Buy tickets online or in person — adult admission is $21.

How to get there: Take the 10 or 101 Freeways to LA’s Miracle Mile neighborhood.

Make a day of it: Cruise over to Canter’s (about a mile away) for lunch or dinner after taking in the exhibit. This 24-hour deli is an LA institution that’s been kicking since 1931.

Top tip: If you buy tickets in advance online and then your plans change, your tickets are still good for a year.

The-BroadPhoto-JoshuaWhite-jwpictures.com-4Q6A1443.jpg

Mickalene Thomas: All About Love , by Mickalene Thomas at the Broad

LA is the first stop on Mickalene Thomas’s first international touring exhibition, Mickalene Thomas: All About Love . Fully immersive, the exhibit doesn’t just invite you in with what’s hanging on the museum’s walls, it plunges you into the New Jersey neighborhood, living room interiors and party environments that have inspired the artist to create boundary-pushing, thought-provoking representations of Black women. Catch her acrylic paint and rhinestone-covered works through September 29, 2024.

Score tickets: Exhibit tickets are $22 for adults and can be purchased online in advance. Same-day, in-person tickets are available, but may require a wait time.

How to get there: The Broad is located in downtown LA. There is a Metro stop nearby — the Grand Avenue Arts/Bunker Hill Station, accessed via the A and E Metro Lines.

Make a day of it: Grand Central Market — the food emporium packed with pizza, ramen, sandwich and seafood tostada stands — is a 10-minute stroll away.

Top tip: Get free entry to the exhibit on Thursday nights from 5–8pm.

Sculpted Portraits from Ancient Egypt , by various artists at the Getty Villa Museum

Here are two things you probably wouldn’t put together: Soaking up the sun on the California coast and checking out ancient Egyptian sculptures. But they’re both possible at the Getty Villa , LA’s most picturesque museum with its gardens, colonnaded walkways and Pacific Ocean views. Sculpted Portraits from Ancient Egypt is on view through January 25, 2027, and includes statues, reliefs and sarcophagi from as far back as 664 BCE.

Score tickets: Admission is free, but requires a timed-entry reservation.

How to get there: Take Pacific Coast Highway. For public transportation , Metro bus line 134 stops at Pacific Coast Highway and Coastline Drive, right across from the villa.

Make a day of it: If the villa’s reflecting pool has you craving a dip, head to Gladstones after your visit. The casual seafood spot sits on a public beach, so you can go for a swim and grab a bite.

Top tip: Plan your museum visit for late afternoon, then grab dinner in Pacific Palisades or Malibu to avoid traffic.

The Gospel of J. Edgar Hoover: How the FBI Aided and Abetted the Rise of White Christian Nationalism

In this program, Lerone Martin, Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Research and Education Institute at Stanford University, discusses his recent book, The Gospel of J. Edgar Hoover, which reveals how Hoover and his FBI teamed up with leading white evangelicals and Catholics to bring about a white Christian America by any means necessary. His research draws on thousands of newly declassified FBI documents, including a civil lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice for FBI files on Billy Graham. Martin takes readers from the pulpits and pews of small-town America to the Oval Office, and from the grassroots to denominational boardrooms. German Big Business and the Holocaust

Among the most striking exhibits at the Auschwitz museum are undoubtedly the mountains of loot stolen from Jews murdered upon arrival. Shoes, suitcases, spectacles, and more fill entire rooms in the former barracks of the main camp. Surviving the Shoah when their owners did not, they constitute a potent proof of the Nazis’ abiding concern with material gain. In this talk, author and historian Peter Hayes traces the ways by which the German corporate world became deeply implicated in—and in many respects indispensable to—the Nazi regime’s persecution, exploitation, and murder of Europe’s Jews. He argues that these developments stemmed inexorably from decisions made and actions taken by the nation’s leading corporate executives in 1933, at the very outset of Nazi rule. Hayes is author or editor of 13 books, including the best-selling “Das Amt und die Vergangenheit” and “Why? Explaining the Holocaust,” which has been translated into several foreign languages including German, Slovak, Spanish, and Chinese. He is currently completing (with Stephan Lindner of Munich) “Profits and Persecution: German Big Business, the Nazi Economy, and the Holocaust.” Series: "Library Channel" [Humanities] [Show ID: 38423]
