Best Things to Do in Corfu, Greece on a Cruise Day

This site contains affiliate links for which we may be compensated.

With several cruise lines sending their ships to include Corfu, Greece this summer, I thought I’d update this article for those who simply want to know the best things to do in Corfu on your own.

My last Viking Ocean cruise aboard the Viking Star included a little more than a half-day in Corfu. That would be my first time setting foot in Greece.

Though a Greek island and not the mainland of Greece, it didn’t matter: I was going to Greece! I just didn’t know what things to do in Corfu.

Rather than travel by bus around the island on a cruise excursion, I wanted to explore Corfu on my own. From looking at the map, a shore excursion in tiny Corfu didn’t seem necessary to me.

Sometimes, I forego ship-led shore excursions…even when they’re included. For me, especially on first-time visits, I like to simply wander the downtown or city center area on my own at my own pace.

Part of the travel experience for me is to mix among locals. And always include a stop for lunch.

Church of St. George is a at the top of the Old Fortress

I love to peek into tiny shops where trays of olives and hanging hams reign supreme, casting their salty, savory aroma from glass cases and wooden rafters out to the street. If I’m really lucky, I find an out of the way café or restaurant that dishes up food that locals adore.

Here’s how I spent my cruise day in Corfu on my own. Plus, a little background information of the island.

Things to Do in Corfu, Greece

Explore old town on your own.

The second largest Ionian Greek Island, Corfu is as beautiful and serene a Greek Island as you can imagine. With mountains as a backdrop, a panoramic drive around the island lends breath-taking views to each turn.

Castles are as common as the ancient monasteries that dot the roads and mountainside. A day in Corfu can be as relaxing or as driven as you’d like.

Most cruise ships anchor offshore or dock near the Cruise Terminal in Kerkira (Corfu). From where you exit the ship or leave the tender, you can either walk or take a shuttle bus to the Cruise Terminal, where shore excursions depart.

At the terminal, your cruise ship will most likely offer another shuttle that makes day-long runs back and forth from the terminal to near the entrance of the Old Fortress in town. It’s about a 3 1/2 mile walk if you prefer.

Instead of a shore excursion, here is what you can do to spend an entire afternoon just soaking up the brilliant Grecian sunshine. Walk along the millennia-old paths of this small Greek island. Try new foods and drinks. Buy a bag of pistachio nuts.

If You Really Want a Shore Excursion in Corfu

If a short tour of Corfu on a ship shore excursion would be helpful to get your bearings, take the morning island shore excursion. Then spend the afternoon in town on your own. But know your schedule. Sometimes cruise ships are only here for a half-day visit.

Shore excursions generally head out into the countryside or you may have the opportunity to rent 4×4 vehicles or pedal around on mountain bikes.

Walking through the Old Town area in Corfu

Be sure to allow time to wander across the drawbridge to the Old Fortress. Dating from about the 6th century, a visit to this huge Venetian fortress on a promontory high above the Ionian Sea is the perfect way to end your a day in Corfu.

At the bus stop for cruise lines at the Old Fortress

Wander back into downtown and take a lunch break. I looked for someplace with shaded outdoor seating.

Quiche and a salad at Earth Cafe in Corfu

From downtown, you’re just a stone’s throw from the Fortress. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. There’s a lot of ground to cover.

Cruise passengers walk across the bridge to the old fortress

And then there’s these balls of fluff…

The Church of St. George was designed to resemble an ancient Doric Temple. It’s open only once a year for Easter.

Corfu Dining and Shopping

Hundreds of small shops line the narrow streets in the Old Town. Enticing aromas from numerous bakeries and coffee shops fill the air, drawing visitors inside for a taste and sip.

Pistachios are sold everywhere in Corfu

Pistachio nuts are sold in every size bag you can imagine while souvenir containers of Greek coffee line the shelves. Ceramics, leather and jewelry are also popular among tourists.

Day in Corfu shopping in Old Town

Lovely indoor/outdoor tavernas throughout the Old Town offer excellent Greek cuisine in a non-hurried atmosphere. Olive oil is king and both the oil and olive wood carvings can be purchased just about everywhere.

If guided shore excursions are on your agenda, try to return early enough to allow two-three hours to explore the quaint, ancient and colorful Old City of Corfu.

corfu-viking-star

We were lucky that our ship spent a very long day in Corfu; from 7am until 6pm. By 4:00pm, most tourists had left the Taverna at the Old Fortress and I was able to just sit back in my chair under the trees and take in the scenery and experience.

Our last Viking Cruises’ bus from the Old Fortress entrance to the Cruise Terminal was at 5:00pm. This gave me the perfect amount of time to sip a cappuccino, have an Italian dessert and crack open a dozen pistachios.

Corfu town (kerkyra).

Corfu Town (or Kerkyra as is is often referred to) is the Capital and is an UNESCO world heritage site. It is situated on the eastern side of the island, roughly half way between north and south. It is the largest town on the island…

The Achilleion lies 10 kilometers from Corfu Town. It was built in 1890 as a summer palace for the Empress Elisabeth of Austria, a tragic figure who was plagued by misfortune (her husband was unfaithful, and her son committed suicide) and was eventually assassinated in 1898….

Pelekas can be found on the West coast of Corfu, just 12 kilometres west from Corfu (Kerkyra) town. It is a picturesque village set on a rocky hill (272 m. high, ~500 inhabitants), whose summit according to the Corfiots say – is the best place to watch…

Unforgettable Things to Do from Corfu Cruise Port

Corfu offers a captivating mix of beaches, history, and stunning scenery. While it’s tempting to spend your entire port day soaking up the sun, these unforgettable experiences might just lure you away from that sun lounger!

1. Immerse Yourself in Corfu Town’s Old World Charm

Aerial View of Corfu Old Town, Greece

Step back in time as you wander the labyrinthine streets of Corfu’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This captivating blend of Venetian, French, and British influences creates a unique architectural tapestry.

Start your exploration in the heart of the Old Town, the Spianada (Esplanade). This vast, elegant square is one of the largest in Europe, bordered by leafy arcades and bustling cafes. During the British era, it served as a cricket pitch – a quirky tradition that continues to this day!

From the Esplanade, stroll along the graceful Liston . This Parisian-style arcade, built during the French occupation, is lined with chic cafes and shops. Sip a coffee and soak in the timeless atmosphere, imagining a bygone era of elegant promenades. While exploring, try pastitsada , the iconic Corfu dish with tender meat in a rich tomato sauce served over thick pasta.

As you venture further, lose yourself in the Old Town’s maze of narrow streets. Admire the Venetian-era buildings with their pastel hues and wrought-iron balconies, discovering hidden gems like tiny churches and charming courtyards.

How to get there: Catch Bus #15 from Corfu cruise port to San Rocco Square. From there, The Esplanade is an easy 10 minute walk away.

DIY Walking Tour Tip : Use Discover Greece’s free audio tour for a self-paced walk around Corfu’s Old Town.

Old Fortress in Corfu Greece, looking into the Aegean Sea, is a wonderful place to visit when on a cruise stop in Corfu

Picture yourself a Venetian soldier at the Old Fortress , standing bravely on its ramparts with the sea breeze in your hair. The views from up here are absolutely epic – the terracotta rooftops of Corfu Town, the sparkling sea, and even Albania in the distance!

This place has stood the test of time. It was built way back in the 15th century by the Venetians to protect the island from invaders. Can you imagine the battles fought here? Definitely worth exploring the tunnels and the little church, which looks like it’s straight out of Ancient Greece. Tickets are €3 – worth it for the views alone, let alone the history!

How to get there: Keep walking from the Esplanade!

Get ready to explore! The New Fortress is a maze of stone tunnels, secret passageways, and towering lookout points. It was built by the Venetians (those guys were big on fortresses!) and then the British added their own touches. Imagine yourself as a soldier, keeping watch from the ramparts!

The views of Corfu Town, the Old Fortress, and the sea are absolutely breathtaking. If you’re feeling adventurous, take the hidden tunnel that leads down to the water – total Indiana Jones vibes! Tickets are €6. This is on the way to the Corfu cruise port, so you may want to make this the last attraction you visit! The closest bus stop for #15 back to the port is at stop “ Ika “.

Mon Repos Park isn’t just a beautiful garden! This former summer palace, built by a British governor in the 1800s, became a royal residence and even saw the birth of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Stroll through shaded pathways, uncover hidden archaeological gems, and imagine the footsteps of royalty. It’s the perfect place to unwind from the city and discover a different side of Corfu.

How to get there: From San Rocco Square, catch Bus #2A to stop “ Mon Repos “. The entrance is next to the bus stop. Buses operate every 30 minutes during summer. Entrance to the Museum is €2 but you can walk around the estate for free. The bus stops are marked on my Corfu Cruise Port map above 👆.

Inside Achilleion Palace aka Palace Sisi in Corfu Greece - one of the many attractions worth seeing while on a cruise port day in Corfu

Escape to the enchanting Achilleion Palace , built by Empress Elisabeth of Austria (also known as Sisi). This hilltop retreat, inspired by the mythical hero Achilles, boasts breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea. Wander through opulent rooms filled with stunning artwork and step into the lush gardens adorned with statues of Greek gods.

Even on a short day trip from your cruise, the Achilleion Palace is worth the journey. Its blend of neoclassical architecture, whimsical gardens, and captivating history offers a unique glimpse into Corfu’s past. Plus, those views will take your breath away! Not sure? Check out the virtual tour first!

How to get there: Achilleion Palace is 10km south west of Corfu Old Town. Catch bus #10 from Psychiatriou Square, 1 minute walk from San Rocco Square. Bus stops at the entrance to Achilleion Palace. See these stops on my Corfu Cruise Port map .

Can you recommend places to eat in Corfu ?

' data-src=

Hi Mory, thanks for your question! I have only ever had lunch in Corfu as I arrived on a cruise ship. (And it was lunch on the run to maximise my sightseeing time). My best tip for Corfu is to search for “Taverna” or “Soulavki” or “Gyros” on Google Maps and you’ll find small family-run authentic Greek home-style restaurants or takeaways where locals will eat in. This strategy certainly works in Old Town Corfu, if that’s where you’ll be spending the bulk of your time ashore. I’m less sure about the rest of the island though. Hope you’ll have a wonderful time in Corfu!

Why is Corfu cancelled in 20/6 cruise?

Hello, currently onboard 10 day cruise that departed on 20/6 from Rome. When checking the app I saw Corfu became a second sea day. There were no announcements and most of the passengers seems unaware. Shore excursion desk claims not knowing what happened. Anybody knows by any chance? Was it the same in the previous cruises? Thanks!

Have you asked the cruise director or the people at guest services?  Those on board the ship are more likely to know than a random group of people on the internet.

It did not make national news here, so not a clue. 🙂

Haha

We're on the 3rd August sailing out of Rome and got an email last week to say Corfu had been dropped and replaced with a sea day.

Also longer stops in Valetta and Mykonos.

Looking at the NCL website, it's been dropped from every NCL Escape cruise this summer and replaced with a sea day.

No idea why though??

The long dog-leg to get to Corfu got me doing some rough calculations.

On the original schedule, I think that Mykonos-Corfu and Corfu-Valetta would both require an average of about 19 knots. Without adjusting the Mykonos departure and Valetta arrival times, Mykonos-Valetta would only require about 12 knots.

I don't think that any of the other sectors of the cruise would require an average speed of as much as 19 knots. Even the long haul from Rome to Santorini looks like it's only about 17.5 knots. But this is all very approximate back-of-the-envelope stuff.

Hi, I was on the 10th June to 20th June Escape sailing, and I can confirm that we did stop at Corfu.

The European way of writing dates is so different than what we are used to. I'm willing to bet more than a few CCers looked at your topic heading and wondered

"what in God's name is this post all about?" Until they take the time to find out where you are from. And those that don't take the time are probably still trying to figure it out!!

Now you know how the rest of the world feels when seeing the dates that Americans write!

We are on the Escape leaving Rome on July 10 and Corfu is still on our itinerary.  We had a couple other small itinerary changes but not that.

So it is. Sorry.

Just seems to be the 10 day cruises affected

No apology necessary! I wonder if it is the distance to or from Corfu from the ports on either side of the stop there that is affecting the ability to port there?  It is the only thing I can think of!

We’re very disappointed about missing Corfu and unhappy with the substitution.  Does anyone know why ncl is cancelling corfu from so many itineraries?

From what I understand the port time is 5am - 2pm and not much around.
