The "Orange Is the New Black" star also opens up about Scientology.

April 22, 2014 -- Laura Prepon is setting the record straight about her relationship with Tom Cruise .

Make that lack thereof.

"It's just so funny that when people don't know, they just make stuff up, [like], apparently I'm dating Tom Cruise right now. And apparently he doesn't want me doing the show because I portray a lesbian and I'm a Scientologist," she told SheKnows . "This is false; where are they even getting this stuff? It's unbelievable to me."

However, the two actors are connected in some ways: like Cruise, Prepon, 34, is a Scientologist. The "Orange Is the New Black" star said that many people who are unfamiliar with the organization ask her about it, and she's always happy to discuss her beliefs. One misconception, she added, is that they're anti-gay.

"You know, in terms of portraying a lesbian on the show, I am a huge supporter of the LGBT community. I'm going to the GLAAD Awards in a few weeks. I went to the human rights campaign," she said. "I flew up to San Francisco and did this whole thing and I won this award [for] being a straight woman portraying a gay woman on camera. I'm a total supporter of the LGBT and they are an amazing fan base."

Laura Prepon Is a Scientologist Who Was Once Rumored to Be Dating Tom Cruise — Facts about Her

Talented actress Laura Prepon has been a Scientologist for more than two decades and was rumored to be secretly dating iconic actor Tom Cruise, a high-profile Scientologist. Here is more about the beautiful actress.

TV star Laura Prepon has been a mainstay on the small screen since she got her breakthrough role portraying Donna Pinciotti in the popular Fox sitcom "That '70s Show" from 1998 to 2006.

Prepon is also known for her role as Alex Vause in the hit Netflix comedy-drama series "Orange Is the New black." She featured on the popular TV series from 2013 to 2019 and earned critical acclaim for her performance.

The 40-year-old actress made her film debut in the 2001 drama flick "Southlander." Over the years, she has been featured in several movie productions, including "Come Early Morning," "Lay the Favorite," "The Girl on the Train," and "The Hero."

Prepon opened up about terminating her second pregnancy and her motherhood experience in her new book, "You and I, As Mothers," which was released in April.

Apart from her acting career, another significant aspect of her life has been her unquestionable devotion to Scientology. Laura Prepon's Scientology journey began in the late 90s, and she has remained an ardent follower ever since.

LAURA PREPON'S TAKE ON SCIENTOLOGY

Laura Prepon has been a practicing Scientologist since 1999, and she has attributed her success in life and her career to her faith. Over the years, she has been very vocal about the positive impact of Scientology on her life.

While speaking on Scientology's overall impact on her life, Prepon claimed that it has helped her adopt a more relaxed energy. In her words:

"In my life, things have become much easier; I'm not affected like I used to be. Things don't bother me that had before. I don't react like I did before…"

Prepon is also not shy to talk about some of the tenets of the religion. In recent years, the stunningly beautiful actress has credited her success in the popular Netflix series "Orange Is the New Black," to the common Scientology practice of "Auditing."

While speaking about her work on the show, Prepon claimed portraying Alex Vause pushed her out of her comfort zone, but she was able to adapt to the role due to her past experiences with auditing.

DEFENDING HER BELIEFS

For many years, legendary actor Tom Cruise assumed the role of a poster boy for Scientology. Over the last decade, Prepon has also become increasingly vocal about the religion and was featured in a 2015 edition of Scientology's celebrity magazine.

The Church of Scientology has also come under heavy public scrutiny primarily due to their unorthodox methods and the secrecy surrounding much of their values and beliefs.

In 2015, former Scientologist Carmen Llywelyn penned a damning letter blaming the religion for ruining her marriage to actor Jason Lee, who is also a Scientologist.

However, Prepon has nothing but love for Scientology, and the "That '70s Show" star has been fervent in defending her religion. During a 2014 interview with Fusion.net's Alicia Menendez, Prepon brushed aside the misconception that the religion is anti-gay.

Prepon, whose character Alex Vause in "Orange Is the New Black" is a lesbian, claimed that her faith has no conflict with the LGBT community. On her part, Prepon is a big supporter of the LGBT community and felt comfortable playing the role despite being a straight woman.

BETWEEN LAURA PREPON AND TOM CRUISE

In 2014, Laura Prepon and the "Mission Impossible" star — who both practice Scientology — were rumored to be dating. Several media outlets reported that the duo had been secretly dating since 2013.

Despite the reports, reps for Cruise and Prepon quickly moved to distance the pair from the dating rumors that were making the rounds. Cruise's rep not only denied the rumors but also emphasized that the two had never met before.

In April 2014, Prepon also shut down the dating rumors and claimed there was no truth behind the reports by various media outlets. She also accused the media of making things up to mislead the public into believing a false narrative.

Even with the denial from both parties, reports that the pair were in a relationship persisted throughout that year. At the time, Prepon had just ended her long term relationship with Scott Michael Foster.

LAURA PREPON'S PERSONAL LIFE

Prepon quickly put the Tom Cruise dating rumors behind her and began a romantic relationship with her longtime friend, actor Ben Foster, 39, (no relation) in 2015.

The lovebirds later got engaged in 2016 and welcomed their first child, daughter Ella, in August 2017. Prepon and Foster finally tied the knot in 2018 in a very intimate ceremony.

The "Orange Is the New Black" alum became pregnant for the second time in 2018. However, she had to endure the difficulty of terminating the pregnancy following the discovery that Laura Prepon's baby would be born with birth defects.

In February 2020, the couple welcomed their second child , a baby boy. Prepon is adjusting to her new reality as a mother of two and recently revealed that she was initially worried about balancing her affection between her children. She said:

"I remember worrying, like, 'Oh my God how am I possibly going to love something as much as her?' And you just do! That was very surprising for me..."

Not much is known about the religious beliefs of Laura Prepon's husband, but she remains a committed member of the Church of Scientology. However, her focus has switched to her family since becoming a wife and mother of two.

Laura Prepon, 34, is shooting down rumors that she's dating fellow Scientologist Tom Cruise, 51, in a new interview with SheKnows.com .

"It's just so funny that, when people don't know, they just make stuff up, [like], apparently I'm dating Tom Cruise right now," she says. "And apparently he doesn't want me doing the show [ Orange is the New Black ] because I portray a lesbian and I'm a Scientologist. This is false; where are they even getting this stuff? It's unbelievable to me."

"The thing that sucks is that there's so much false data because people are in mystery as to what Scientology is, so they just kind of make up stuff," Prepon added. "It's kind of unfortunate because then I have to be like, 'No, that's actually not what's happening.'"

She also clarified that just because you're a Scientologist, doesn't mean you're automatically anti-gay.

Tom Cruise and Laura Prepon dating, report says

It would be a match made in Scientology heaven, if Scientology had a heaven, but it does not.

Tom Cruise is dating "Orange Is the New Black" star Laura Prepon, Page Six reports.

“It’s the buzz on the set of her show,” the insider told the gossip column.

Prepon, who plays a lesbian drug dealer on the hit Netflix show, and Cruise, who recently got dumped by Katie Holmes, are trying very hard to keep their relationship a secret, but have reportedly been spotted on multiple occasions.

The British magazine Grazia reported the two were an item as early as last fall.

“They spent three hours laughing and joking. It’s clear Tom is smitten and after the date he was on cloud nine,” the magazine reported. “They had their second date at the restaurant, too, meeting for Sunday brunch, and then she accompanied him a few days later to a dinner party at John [Travolta]’s home.”

Reps for both denied the reports, however.

Prepon, 34, once dated fellow Scientologist and “Malcolm in the Middle” star Chris Masterson.

Cruise, 51, has been married three times.

Tom Cruise dating Laura Prepon? Here’s the rumor roundup

Despite reports to the contrary, reps for Tom Cruise and actress Laura Prepon have denied that their clients are dating.

Cruise’s rep shut down rumors by telling the Daily Mail that not only has Cruise, 51, not been dating the “Orange Is the New Black” actress, but the two have never even met.

And a rep for Prepon, 34, told Us Weekly on Thursday that reports linking the pair are “not true.”

Gossip Cop also gave the rumor a zero on its “Real or Rumor” scale, citing a source close to the “Mission Impossible” actor saying “they are not dating.”

However, reports insisting that the romance was still on have still been swirling online despite denials from both camps.

British mag Grazia first reported the alleged romance in the fall, indicating that the fellow Scientologists had been trying to keep it under wraps.

In November, the pair were reportedly spotted having dinner together at the Manor Hotel in Los Angeles and Cruise picked her up in a vintage car and had a bottle of 1979 Merlot waiting for her. (Wait, didn’t the rep just say they never even met?!)

Still, Page Six columnist Richard Johnson asserted Thursday that the actors were an item “but they are being extremely careful to keep it secret.”

“It’s the buzz on the set of her show,” an insider told the publication.

Prepon, of “That ‘70s Show” and “How I Met Your Mother,” plays a lesbian drug dealer on the Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black,” which returns June 6. So it’s not like the reports aren’t helping promote her upcoming project...

But last November, an insider also told Us Weekly that Cruise and Prepon “see each other at some functions, but they are not dating.”

Cruise’s last high-profile relationship, with “Dawson’s Creek” alum Katie Holmes, ended in summer 2012, when the pair announced their split after seven years of marriage. The pair also has a daughter named Suri, 7, together. Before that Cruise was married to Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman and Mimi Rogers.

Since Holmes, the “Jack Reacher” star has been romantically linked to New York restaurateur Cynthia Jorge. He’s also been seen sharing meals with “The Other Woman” star Cameron Diaz and his ex, Penelope Cruz, the Mail reported.

In 2007, Prepon split with longtime boyfriend Christopher Masterson, brother of her “That ‘70s Show” costar Danny Masterson, after seven years of dating. She reportedly dated “Greek” and “Californication” actor Scott Michael Foster after that, Us Weekly reported.

There’s been much media speculation over the departure—and return—of Laura Prepon to 'OITNB.' In a candid interview, she sets the record straight.

Orange Is the New Black’s resident badass is back.

It’s been almost a year since everyone’s favorite women’s prison dramedy dropped on Netflix, but the interim was filled with a great deal of gossip concerning the future of Alex Vause, the bespectacled, tattooed ex-drug smuggler—and love interest of Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling)—played by the excellent Laura Prepon.

The rumors stated that Prepon, since she wasn’t a series regular on the show, had opted out after Season 1 but, due to fan interest, was pressured into returning for four episodes in Season 2, and as a series regular for Season 3 (more on that later).

Prepon, best known as the striking redhead Donna Pinciotti on the Fox sitcom That ’70s Show , has also recently found herself the victim of bizarre tabloid rumors linking her to Tom Cruise.

In a candid interview with The Daily Beast, Prepon put all the rumors to rest.

There’s a lot of conflicting information that’s been published online about what happened with your contract following Season 1, and your diminished role in Season 2, and now you signing on for Season 3. The rumors were that you’d opted out of your OITNB contract after Season 1. What really happened?

Basically, I wasn’t a series regular and wasn’t under contract, and then had a scheduling conflict that came up during Season 2. But I love the show and I love my character, and I told Jenji from the get-go, “I want to be in as many as I can.” So we did, and I’ll be in four episodes for Season 2. And then if we get a Season 3, I’ll be in every episode. I totally missed the show. It sucks, but there’s only one of me, and there’s only so much time in the day. We did what we could, and if there’s a Season 3, I worked it out so that wouldn’t be an issue anymore.

What was the scheduling conflict with Season 2?

Unfortunately, I can’t really talk about it because it’s not out yet and under wraps. But it was a work thing. I’d gotten another job. Here’s the thing: It’s actually really flattering that everyone was trying to figure out what was going on with my character, but it’s a double-edged sword, because people were making up stories. A lot of our jobs is about timing. Even going into Season 3—if we get a Season 3—some of the actors have already gotten other jobs, so it’s just a part of our industry. When you’re not under a “series regular” contract and other jobs come up, you try to juggle everything. On That ’70s Show we’d have to shoot out Ashton [Kutcher] if he was doing a movie. It’s the same thing here. But I’m glad that I’m returning because I missed the girls and it sucked not being there.

Speaking of crazy rumors… where did these rumors that you’re dating Tom Cruise come from?

Oh god… I knew this would come up! Dude, I have no idea. I really don’t know. I totally respect him and think he’s an amazing actor, but I’m not dating him. I don’t know what else to say. It’s crazy. It just goes to show: Don’t believe everything you read. I have no idea where it came from. I don’t know how we ended up “together.” I’m flattered because I think he’s hot so I’m like, “Oh, that’s nice,” and apparently he’s very gentlemanly with me. Apparently we get along great and he knows that I have a favorite bottle of wine that I didn’t even know I had. So, apparently he’s on cloud nine…. [Laughs]

Did you read the real-life Alex Vause’s Vanity Fair interview?

[Laughs] I did. It was really funny. You can totally tell that she and Piper do not like each other. I thought it was interesting that she said all the love stuff happened after all the drug stuff happened, and while they were doing the drug stuff they weren’t even a thing. But whatever. Everyone has different viewpoints on it. When I was doing Season 1 she was completely MIA, and now she’s coming out with her side of it. The bottom line is that these women do not like each other. I still haven’t spoken to her because I was told she was “off the grid.” Now that she’s resurfaced, I don’t know. We’ll see.

When we last left Alex, she was hooking up with Nichols and got burned by Piper, who said she’s sticking with her husband, Larry. Where do we see her in Season 2?

She’d just gotten her heart ripped out. We’ve always talked about how my character is like the spider and Piper’s is the fly, and what’s cool about the show is that you think Piper is this delicate flower but, as the season progresses, you realize how manipulative, messed up, and codependent she is, and you realize that Alex is a straight-shooter and pretty honest and confrontational about things. But at the end of Season 1, Piper is totally messing with Alex again and leaves her again for Larry, and Alex is thinking, “You know what? I can’t handle your emotional rollercoaster anymore. It’s bullshit.” She knows Piper better than Larry does and sees through all her machinations, so by the end of Season 1, she’s over it. With Season 2, when you have two people that love each other like they do, and it’s so tumultuous, it will always be this awful back-and-forth. Everyone knows a couple like that in their life where they think, “They shouldn’t be together…this is toxic.”

You mentioned That '70s Show earlier. Does the gang still hang out together, and is it wild for you all that Ashton and Mila are a couple now? I believe she’s said he was her first kiss.

Of course the gang hangs out! We’re all like family. I don’t really comment on my friend’s dating lives, but I will say that I’m glad they’re together and they’re a really great couple.

Back to OITNB . How were you initially cast as Alex on the show? I heard that you initially read for Piper.

Yeah. Basically, I read the pilot and I absolutely loved it, and I knew I wasn’t right for Piper but it was such an amazing show that I felt I needed to be a part of it. I wasn’t even thinking about the role of Alex. I went in to read for Piper and Jenji said, “I can’t get you out of my head for Alex,” and then it worked out because Alex is such a badass. I love her.

She’s arguably the show’s biggest badass.

You know what it is about her? She’s this awesome badass but she’s also really vulnerable, and you see these other sides to her with her relationship with Piper. She’s also a survivor and will do whatever it takes to survive, as well as power-hungry. She’s very complex and a straight-shooter, which is rad.

Are you surprised how huge the show’s become? It attracted more viewers than the first season of House of Cards .

It’s amazing. When you’re doing a show like this, you feel like you’re doing something special and you just hope that people will catch on, and they totally did.

Besides your own, do you have a favorite character on the show? I don’t even know! This isn’t a copout, I swear, but they’re all so awesome and so different that I don’t know how I’d choose a single character. Plus I’m biased because I love all the girls.

What was it like to be directed by Jodie Foster and Andrew McCarthy in the first season?

It was really cool because they’re both great at working with actors, and very good directors. They’re also great actors so it’s fun working with someone who gets it on that level. And Jodie’s attention to detail is excellent. Jodie directed at least one episode in Season 2, and Andrew directed a few as well. But when you’re shooting in prison, some of the episodes bleed together! We shoot at a soundstage in Queens as well as an abandoned children’s psychiatric hospital in Upstate New York, which is… I don’t even know how to describe it. It’s crazy.

Do you have favorite scenes from Season 1 featuring Alex? Was it getting locked in a dryer?

[Laughs] I was locked in a dryer. A lot of the laundry room scenes with Taylor and me I really loved—when we’re talking about our relationship. I also really loved when we shot our European scenes where I was asking her to go to Turkey and do drug runs for me. We got to shoot at this amazing location in Manhattan and it was just us acting with one another all day.

One of the reasons I think the show’s important is that it serves as a great example—to have a show featuring a diverse cast of women. It’s a rarity in TV today. What are some of the things that you enjoy about what the show stands for?

It shines light on the whole penal system, which people don’t really tend to look at, and it shines light on the corruption within the penal system. Also, with these women, everyone has a story. These women may be locked up, but they’re all there for different reasons—whether it’s a mistake they made in the past, they deserve to be there, or they can’t function in the real world. You really learn about these women, and what’s going on with them. And there isn’t another show where you have all these strong, female characters, and to be able to portray a strong female character among this great group of actors is wonderful. And they’re all different shapes, sizes, colors, and creeds. It’s so cool that we get to be this rad mosh pit of inmates that really goes against the idea of what a Hollywood actress has to be.

TOM Cruise hasn’t been lonely since breaking up with Katie Holmes.

He’s been secretly dating fellow Scientologist Laura Prepon, who plays a lesbian drug dealer on Orange Is the New Black .

P.R. reps for the two denied any romance in November after the actors were spotted enjoying a cozy dinner at the Manor Hotel in Los Angeles.

However, my source on the Left Coast says Cruise and Prepon are still seeing each other, but they are being extremely careful to keep it secret. “It’s the buzz on the set of her show,” the insider told me.

The British magazine Grazia reported last fall that Cruise, 51, picked up Prepon, 34, in a vintage car and had a bottle of 1979 Merlot waiting on the table when they arrived at the Manor Hotel.

“They spent three hours laughing and joking. It’s clear Tom is smitten and after the date he was on cloud nine,” the mag reported. “They had their second date at the restaurant, too, meeting for Sunday brunch, and then she accompanied him a few days later to a dinner party at John [Travolta]’s home.”

But Cruise’s hardworking publicist quickly tried to squelch the story. “They see each other at some functions, but they are not dating,” an insider told Us Weekly . Reps for Cruise and Prepon continued to deny the romance to me on Wednesday.

Cruise — after his failed marriages to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman — reportedly auditioned women as potential brides before picking third (and now ex) wife Katie Holmes, who converted to Scientology at Tom’s insistence.

Prepon, who dated Malcolm in the Middle actor and fellow Scientologist Chris Masterson for years before a reported breakup in 2012, might be a better match.

The New York Post's Page Six previously reported Cruise and Prepon have been secretly dating for some time.

"It's the buzz on the set of her show," a source told Page Six of the two famous Scientologists, who were spotted having a cozy dinner at the Manor Hotel in Los Angeles in November.

A rep for the actor told the Daily Mail that Cruise, 51, and Prepon, 34, have never even met .

Prepon has not only had to deal with rampant speculation about her private life, but also about her faith. The "Orange Is the New Black" star chalks up rumors about Scientology to sheer misconception.

"The thing that sucks is that there's so much false data because people are in mystery as to what Scientology is, so they just kind of make up stuff," Prepon told SheKnows. "It's kind of unfortunate because then I have to be like, 'No, that's actually not what's happening.'"

Laura Prepon, 34, is shooting down rumors that she's dating fellow Scientologist Tom Cruise, 51, in a new interview with SheKnows.com .

"It's just so funny that, when people don't know, they just make stuff up, [like], apparently I'm dating Tom Cruise right now," she says. "And apparently he doesn't want me doing the show [ "Orange is the New Black" ] because I portray a lesbian and I'm a Scientologist. This is false; where are they even getting this stuff? It's unbelievable to me."

"The thing that sucks is that there's so much false data because people are in mystery as to what Scientology is, so they just kind of make up stuff," Prepon added. "It's kind of unfortunate because then I have to be like, 'No, that's actually not what's happening.'"

She also clarified that just because you're a Scientologist, doesn't mean you're automatically anti-gay.

"You know, in terms of portraying a lesbian on the show, I am a huge supporter of the LGBT community. I'm going to the GLAAD Awards in a few weeks," she says. "I went to the human rights campaign. I flew up to San Francisco and did this whole thing and I won this award [for] being a straight woman portraying a gay woman on camera. I'm a total supporter of the LGBT and they are an amazing fan base."

It was recently announced that Prepon will be back as a full-time cast member for season three of the Netflix hit "Orange is the New Black" as her character Alex Vause.

Not only that, but the former Days of Thunder star purportedly picked up the actress in a classic car and surprised her with a vintage 1979 bottle of merlot.

The insider alleged that the evening went so well, the duo returned to the restaurant for a second date over Sunday brunch, and then she accompanied him to a party at fellow Scientologist John Travolta 's home a few days later. 

However don't get your couch-jumping hopes up just yet. 

When contacted by E! News, Cruise's rep smacked down rumors of a romance, saying the report is "false." 

It's been a little more than 15 months since the actor's divorce from his third wife, Katie Holmes , became final, putting an end to their five-year marriage.

Since then, he's concentrated on work, starring in last December's thriller, Jack Reacher , and the summer sci-fi blockbuster Oblivion .

Here’s your jaw-dropping celebrity dating story for the day: according to reports picked up by Page Six , Tom Cruise and Laura Prepon have been secretly dating for some time now. Let that sink in for a moment.

Back in November, the two were allegedly spotted having a “cozy dinner” at Los Angeles’ Manor Hotel, Page Six reports, but both actors’ PR reps denied any romantic involvement at the time. But according to Page Six celebrity writer Richard Johnson , his “source on the Left Coast” confirms that the two are still seeing each other, and that it’s “quite the buzz” on the set of Prepon’s hit Netflix show “ Orange Is the New Black .”

If it seems super-random on the surface, the two have at least one strong bond that might have brought them together, whether on their own or by the hands of others: They’ve both been Scientologists for years. They’ve both independently spoken openly to the press about their devotion to the religion, which for Cruise is already an upgrade—his previous wife Katie Holmes converted to Scientology after they were married, at his insistence.

Richard Johnson at Page Six ran an interesting item this morning suggesting that Tom Cruise, an actor, and Laura Prepon, an actress, have been secretly dating for months. There have been rumors about this couple for a little while now, as Cruise was alleged to have been seen picking Prepon up in an old car and taking her to the Scientology retreat, the Manor Hotel , where they supposedly had fancy wine and laughed and chatted and then flew to space or whatever it is that people in that particular situation do. That was reported by the British magazine Grazia a while back, but now Johnson seems to have new information. He writes that everyone on the set of Prepon’s show Orange Is the New Black is buzzin’ about the relationship. Specifically, the source told Johnson, “It’s the buzz on the set of her show.” So the buzz is on the set, you see. Of her show. That’s where the buzz is.

Tom Cruise’s people categorically deny the claims , saying that the two have never even met. So! What do we think is really happening?? As you may have guessed from the whole Manor Hotel thing, both Prepon and Cruise are Scientologists, so if they were in fact dating, they probably would have a lot of values and beliefs in common. What those values and beliefs are exactly I’m not sure, but there don’t seem to be any real sects within the larger church, so they’re probably mostly on the same page. I mean no one’s nailed any theses to the door of the Celebrity Centre as far as I’m aware, so there probably hasn’t been some great schism that Cruise and Prepon could be on opposite sides of. So maybe that could be a great point of connection for them, their shared faith. I mean, hopefully that’s not the only thing that would attract them to each other. It would of course be nice if they also liked doing the same activities, like driving old cars and going to Scientology hotels and being on Orange Is the New Black . Which they seem to! Cruise obviously hasn’t been on that show, but he’s been on shows. Hasn’t he? Huh, actually, I just looked at his IMDb page and it doesn’t seem that he has any TV credits? How can that be? Meanwhile, the premiere episode of Friends with Better Lives featured repeated use of the word “wiener” and a centerpiece sight gag about a blow job. So, no. Uh oh. There’s trouble in Goop city. The C.E.O. of Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle website/newsletter has quit. It’s unclear why exactly, but Page Six is positing that it may have had something to do with the whole “conscious uncoupling” announcement, like maybe the C.E.O, whose name is Seb Bishop, may have felt that the site was becoming too much about Paltrow’s personal life and not enough about . . . goop. Not enough goop on Goop. There’s also the possibility that Bishop didn’t want to relocate his family to Los Angeles, where Goop is now headquartered. (Though, Page Six says that he was looking at places there.) See, the site is headquartered where Gwyneth Paltrow is headquartered, because the site is all about Gwyneth Paltrow. I mean, that’s why it exists. Because Gwyneth Paltrow is involved. So how could it become too much about her? If that is indeed the reason why the guy quit, it’s not much of a reason. It’d be like saying the Barefoot Contessa brand should be less about making dinner for Jeffrey. That is what the Barefoot Contessa is all about, making dinner for Jeffrey and every older gay gentleman in the Hamptons. And Goop is about Gwyneth Paltrow, conscious uncoupling, and everything else. So why leave? Oh well. I guess if you can’t handle the heat from the strange white macrobiotic flames that emanate from Paltrow’s hands while she’s cooking, get out of the immaculate kitchen. ‘That ’90s Show’ Star Laura Prepon Unpacks ‘Open Ended’ Part 3 Finale, Hopes for More Seasons

Note: This story contains spoilers from “That ’90s Show” Part 3.

“That ’90s Show” closed out its third season with a shakeup in dynamics, with the future of Laura Prepon’s character intentionally left “open-ended,” according to Prepon.

As summer in Point Place started to wind down, Donna (Prepon) revealed to Leia (Callie Haverda) in Part 3’s penultimate episode that her father, Eric (played by Topher Grace, who has not appeared in the show since its inaugural season) scored his dream job in California. Donna told Leia she could spend the school year in Point Place as well, while Donna commutes between her job in Chicago, Point Place and the West Coast — a suggestion which Leia immediately jumped at.

With Leia’s friendships and relationships cemented in Point Place, Donna eventually agreed to the plan, which Prepon, who also directed all the episodes in Part 3, said was fueled by knowing how badly Leia wants this dream to be a reality.

“I’ll do anything for my kids,” Prepon told TheWrap. “There are times where, as a parent, you do have to have self care and focus on yourself for a second … but in that moment, Donna was purely thinking about what is the best thing for Leia, what is going to be the most stable thing for Leia?”

With Leia set to spend the year in Point Place, Donna couldn’t help but consider staying in Point Place herself, though she reminded her father — and herself — why she left town in the first place. By the end of Part 3, it was unclear if Donna had decided to stay: Red (Kurtwood Smith) told his support group she was, though Donna never explicitly says so.

Prepon clarified the ending is left “open-ended,” and was an intentional choice from the writers amid uncertainty whether “That ’90s Show” might receive further season orders from Netflix or would conclude with Part 3.

“I don’t know if the show is going to go longer — I really hope it does, because the cast is wonderful … and crew is just phenomenal,” Prepon said. “I’d love to direct more … and be a part of it, but I just don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Below, Prepon unpacked directing on the set she grew up on during Part 3, how Donna handled a sensitive conversation with Leia and why she loves seeing “prickly Kitty,” played by Debra Jo Rupp.

You got to direct all eight episodes of Part 3. Why were you interested in directing and what was the experience like?

The experience was amazing. I’ve been directing for a while — when I was on “Orange [Is the New Black],” I directed … multiple episodes on that, I directed in this show last year as well. It was really nice being able to direct a whole slew of episodes at the same time, because you really get to sit deep in the saddle and go. And being able to go back onto a set that I know so well. And not only the set, but the showrunner I’ve known for 20 years, because he was a writer on “’70s” and Bonnie Turner, Terry Turner, Marcy Carsey, Tom Werner — all these people I’ve known for a very long time — and they’ve trusted me to take the helm of these eight episodes for Part 3 was really wonderful, and I had a blast.

Do you have hopes to direct more?

I love acting, but directing is what I want to do. I’m like a fish in water when I’m doing it, and acting makes me a better director. There’s nothing I’m going to ask this cast to do that I’ve never done myself, the understanding and the empathy is so high because I’ve been doing this for so long. I understand, especially on this show with these sets — talk about being there, I’ve physically, emotionally been there. I do hope to do more [but] it takes me away from my family longer. But my husband, we’re both in the business, and we just figure it out.

This season saw Don Stark returning in a bigger role as Bob, where he and Leia got to have some more bonding time. What was it like reuniting with him and what was it like seeing Bob and Leia together?

It’s so nice to be able to work — not only as an actress with Donna, but also as a director — with Don, Debra Jo and Kurtwood. They come up and hug me and just be like, “You’re doing such a great job. We’re so proud of you, kid.”

Don had some really fun stuff this season as well, and it was so fun to direct him in those scenes and work with him in those scenes. Seeing Leia and Bob together, it’s very cool, because especially when there’s a show you love — a lot of people love “’70s,” it was a staple show — when shows like that end, it’s a bummer. You’re like, “Oh, I’m gonna miss these characters.” And what’s so nice is being able to see Donna as a mother and as a wife, and be in these scenes now with her dad and her daughter.

Early on in the season, we see Donna give Leia some advice as she gets more comfortable with her sexuality. How did you want Donna to approach having a talk like this?

They went through a couple of different iterations of that scene before we landed on that. It took a minute to figure out, “Should Donna be a little bit nervous at first?” We tried it a couple different ways. And then, the writers landed [it being a] really empowering moment for Donna to be able to have a calm conversation with her daughter, always with some jokes, but have that stable conversation. I was really happy that we end up going that direction … I love the way it was written. And I thought it was really empowering for her daughter and empowering for Donna as well.

After Donna agrees to let Leia stay in Point Place, we see Donna and Kitty bump heads after being pretty amenable. What was that like to play?

It was so hard to get through that scene. We just kept bursting into laughter, we just had a blast. That was a fun thing for Debra Jo and I to be able to play with, the weird Kitty versus Donna thing. We’ve never done it before. Donna’s an upstairs person, now, she’s not in the basement, which is one of Red’s lines.

Kitty thinks that Donna stole Eric away … and I just think that Kitty just wants to be surrounded by family. So I think the fact that Donna is this self-empowered woman and is a little bit of a threat to taking her family away, it’s just kind of funny. Of course, there’s deep love there, but it was just kind of funny to see Kitty prickly, who doesn’t love prickly Kitty?

‘That ’90s Show’ Star Laura Prepon Unpacks ‘Open Ended’ Part 3 Finale, Hopes for More Seasons

The “’70s Show” alum also tells TheWrap about directing on the sets she grew up on, and why she loves butting heads with Debra Jo Rupp

“That ’90s Show” closed out its third season with a shakeup in dynamics, with the future of Laura Prepon’s character intentionally left “open-ended,” according to Prepon.

As summer in Point Place started to wind down, Donna (Prepon) revealed to Leia (Callie Haverda) in Part 3’s penultimate episode that her father, Eric (played by Topher Grace, who has not appeared in the show since its inaugural season) scored his dream job in California. Donna told Leia she could spend the school year in Point Place as well, while Donna commutes between her job in Chicago, Point Place and the West Coast — a suggestion which Leia immediately jumped at.

With Leia’s friendships and relationships cemented in Point Place, Donna eventually agreed to the plan, which Prepon, who also directed all the episodes in Part 3, said was fueled by knowing how badly Leia wants this dream to be a reality.

“I’ll do anything for my kids,” Prepon told TheWrap. “There are times where, as a parent, you do have to have self care and focus on yourself for a second … but in that moment, Donna was purely thinking about what is the best thing for Leia, what is going to be the most stable thing for Leia?”

With Leia set to spend the year in Point Place, Donna couldn’t help but consider staying in Point Place herself, though she reminded her father — and herself — why she left town in the first place. By the end of Part 3, it was unclear if Donna had decided to stay: Red (Kurtwood Smith) told his support group she was, though Donna never explicitly says so.

Prepon clarified the ending is left “open-ended,” and was an intentional choice from the writers amid uncertainty whether “That ’90s Show” might receive further season orders from Netflix or would conclude with Part 3.

“I don’t know if the show is going to go longer — I really hope it does, because the cast is wonderful … and crew is just phenomenal,” Prepon said. “I’d love to direct more … and be a part of it, but I just don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Below, Prepon unpacked directing on the set she grew up on during Part 3, how Donna handled a sensitive conversation with Leia and why she loves seeing “prickly Kitty,” played by Debra Jo Rupp.

You got to direct all eight episodes of Part 3. Why were you interested in directing and what was the experience like?

The experience was amazing. I’ve been directing for a while — when I was on “Orange [Is the New Black],” I directed … multiple episodes on that, I directed in this show last year as well. It was really nice being able to direct a whole slew of episodes at the same time, because you really get to sit deep in the saddle and go. And being able to go back onto a set that I know so well. And not only the set, but the showrunner I’ve known for 20 years, because he was a writer on “’70s” and Bonnie Turner, Terry Turner, Marcy Carsey, Tom Werner — all these people I’ve known for a very long time — and they’ve trusted me to take the helm of these eight episodes for Part 3 was really wonderful, and I had a blast.

Do you have hopes to direct more?

I love acting, but directing is what I want to do. I’m like a fish in water when I’m doing it, and acting makes me a better director. There’s nothing I’m going to ask this cast to do that I’ve never done myself, the understanding and the empathy is so high because I’ve been doing this for so long. I understand, especially on this show with these sets — talk about being there, I’ve physically, emotionally been there. I do hope to do more [but] it takes me away from my family longer. But my husband, we’re both in the business, and we just figure it out.

This season saw Don Stark returning in a bigger role as Bob, where he and Leia got to have some more bonding time. What was it like reuniting with him and what was it like seeing Bob and Leia together?

It’s so nice to be able to work — not only as an actress with Donna, but also as a director — with Don, Debra Jo and Kurtwood. They come up and hug me and just be like, “You’re doing such a great job. We’re so proud of you, kid.”

Don had some really fun stuff this season as well, and it was so fun to direct him in those scenes and work with him in those scenes. Seeing Leia and Bob together, it’s very cool, because especially when there’s a show you love — a lot of people love “’70s,” it was a staple show — when shows like that end, it’s a bummer. You’re like, “Oh, I’m gonna miss these characters.” And what’s so nice is being able to see Donna as a mother and as a wife, and be in these scenes now with her dad and her daughter.

Early on in the season, we see Donna give Leia some advice as she gets more comfortable with her sexuality. How did you want Donna to approach having a talk like this?

They went through a couple of different iterations of that scene before we landed on that. It took a minute to figure out, “Should Donna be a little bit nervous at first?” We tried it a couple different ways. And then, the writers landed [it being a] really empowering moment for Donna to be able to have a calm conversation with her daughter, always with some jokes, but have that stable conversation. I was really happy that we end up going that direction … I love the way it was written. And I thought it was really empowering for her daughter and empowering for Donna as well.

After Donna agrees to let Leia stay in Point Place, we see Donna and Kitty bump heads after being pretty amenable. What was that like to play?

It was so hard to get through that scene. We just kept bursting into laughter, we just had a blast. That was a fun thing for Debra Jo and I to be able to play with, the weird Kitty versus Donna thing. We’ve never done it before. Donna’s an upstairs person, now, she’s not in the basement, which is one of Red’s lines.

Kitty thinks that Donna stole Eric away … and I just think that Kitty just wants to be surrounded by family. So I think the fact that Donna is this self-empowered woman and is a little bit of a threat to taking her family away, it’s just kind of funny. Of course, there’s deep love there, but it was just kind of funny to see Kitty prickly, who doesn’t love prickly Kitty?

Celebrity scientologists and those who left the church: tom cruise, leah remini, more.

L. Ron Hubbard founded the Church of Scientology in February 1954 and since then, the controversial religion has been met with a lot of criticism for its “cult-like” beliefs.

However, many people, including several celebs, have turned to the faith for spiritual guidance.

Below are the stars who have remained loyal to the Church of Scientology — and those who quit the religion.

Tom Cruise is widely considered to be the celebrity poster child for Scientology. His first wife, Mimi Rogers, introduced him to the religion in 1986 and he’s been a devout follower ever since.

The “Mission Impossible” star is allegedly “ considered a deity within Scientology” and Leah Remini, who left the church in 2013, once said he is second in command to leader David Miscavige and considered “the savior of the free world.”

However, Cruise has reportedly felt “persecuted” for his beliefs because many of his life decisions have come under severe scrutiny — and Scientology has been said to be behind them.

The church allegedly facilitated the “Top Gun” star’s split from Rogers and helped him get together with his second wife, Nicole Kidman. Scientology has also been blamed for keeping Cruise from his daughter Suri , whom he shares with his third wife, Katie Holmes, and whom he has not seen in 16 years .

Holmes, who was raised Catholic, divorced Cruise in 2012 and did not want Suri to be a Scientologist to “protect” her from the controversial religion.

Leah Remini

Remini had been part of the Church of Scientology since childhood. Her mother, Vicki Marshall, introduced her to the religion .

Page Six exclusively reported in July 2013 that Remini quit the church after years of being allegedly subjected to “interrogations” and “thought modification” because she reportedly once asked about leader David Miscaviage’s wife, Shelly Miscavige, who had not been seen in public since 2007.

The “King of Queens” alum then launched a crusade against Scientology after leaving to expose their alleged misdeeds.

In 2016, her docuseries, “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath,” which told the stories of former church members, premiered on A&E. It ran for three seasons.

Remini then sued the Church of Scientology in August 2023, claiming they had stalked, harassed her and caused emotional distress.

The church denied any wrongdoing in a statement and called Remini’s allegations “lunacy.”

John Travolta

John Travolta was raised Catholic but converted to Scientology in 1975 at age 21 after his former “The Devil’s Rain” co-star introduced him to the religion.

“He was extremely unhappy and not doing well,” Joan Prather said at the time, per the Hollywood Reporter .

After signing up for the Hubbard Qualified Scientologist Course at the Celebrity Centre, Travolta reportedly boasted that his career had taken off.

The “Grease” star has been a staunch defendant of Scientology over the years. The Church was widely criticized following the deaths of his close relatives, which many believed could have been avoided .

In 2009, Travolta’s son, Jett, suffered a seizure at age 16 that led him to fall and fatally strike his head on a bathtub at a hotel. The Church of Scientology reportedly discouraged the use of medication for seizures.

Travolta’s wife, Kelly Preston, then died in August 2020 at age 57 after a secret breast cancer battle .

It’s unclear if she received treatment, as Scientologists teach that through “Dianetics,” church founder Hubbard’s official theory about the religion, auditors within Scientology can treat and even cure some of their mental and physical diseases. 

Travolta, however, has praised the church for being there for him during difficult times, saying in 2015 after Jett’s death, “I’ve been brought through storms that were insurmountable, and (Scientology has) been so beautiful for me, that I can’t even imagine attacking it.”

Kirstie Alley

Travolta’s longtime pal and “Look Who’s Talking” co-star, Kirstie Alley, was also a Scientology member.

After being introduced to the religion by a neighbor, the actress joined the church in 1979 in an effort to free herself from her cocaine addiction .

Alley told “Entertainment Tonight” in 2012 that she was then admitted into Scientology’s rehab network, which reportedly promoted long hours in a sauna and an increased vitamin intake.

“Miraculously, and I do mean miraculously, I had one Scientology session and never did cocaine again,” she told the entertainment news program.

Alley died in December 2022 after a short battle with cancer at age 71. She reportedly received treatment at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla.

Tony Ortega of the long-running Scientology blog “The Underground Bunker,” told Page Six at the time that Scientology is “against psychiatric care and psychiatric drugs” but followers are “not stopped from seeking medical treatment if they have cancer,” adding members are not told to not go to the hospital.

Scientology members reportedly believed Alley achieved superhuman status , reaching OT VIII, which according to Ortega is the highest you can go on the “Bridge to Total Freedom,” Scientology’s primary action plan toward spiritual freedom.

Danny Masterson

Danny Masterson was raised in the Church of Scientology as his stepfather, Joe Reaiche, and mother Carole Masterson, were members of the Sea Org, the church’s clergy.

The “That ’70s Show” alum reportedly tried to woo some of his famous buddies, including Ashton Kutcher, into practicing the faith as well.

Before his May 2023 convictions for rape and 30-year prison sentencing thereafter , the Church of Scientology’s alleged secrets were aired out during the trial.

One of the accusers testified that a church official told her to put in writing that she would “take responsibility” for a 2001 sexual assault Danny allegedly committed.

Another claimed a church lawyer showed up to her family’s house and threatened to expel her from the congregation if she told police the “Men at Work” alum raped her.

After Danny was found guilty, it was rumored that he had gotten expelled from the church because he had been deemed a “suppressive person,” which is an individual whose behavior seeks to impede the spiritual progress of those around him, but the allegation was never confirmed.

Bijou Phillips

Danny’s estranged wife , Bijou Phillips, also practiced Scientology alongside the actor.

However, the Daily Mail reported in January 2024 that the former model quietly left the church “a few weeks” after her ex was reportedly declared a suppressive person.

An insider said at the time, “It’s never an easy decision to leave Scientology because you face being ripped apart from your family and friends who are still members. 

Laura Prepon

Danny’s “That ’70s Show” co-star Laura Prepon was raised Catholic and Jewish, but later converted to Scientology in 1999.

Prepon revealed in August 2021 that she quit the church five years prior, noting that she and her husband, Ben Foster, who never practiced Scientology and whom she wed in 2018 , preferred meditation.

The “Orange Is the New Black” alum also said at the time that motherhood “forced [her] to look at a lot of things in [her] life that [she] wasn’t looking at before.”

Elisabeth Moss

Elisabeth Moss’ parents joined Scientology before she was born, so the “Mad Men” alum was raised in the church since childhood. She is currently still a member.

Moss has said that she thinks Scientology is “misunderstood,” telling the New Yorker in April 2022 that it’s “not really a closed-off religion.”

The “Handmaid’s Tale” star added at the time, “It’s a place that is very open to, like, welcoming in somebody who wants to learn more about it.”

Lisa Marie Presley

Lisa Marie Presley was introduced to Scientology as a young child by her mother, Priscilla Presley, following her father Elvis Presley’s death.

Amid her struggles with drug abuse as a young teen, the songstress underwent three Scientology Purification rundowns , but they reportedly didn’t work.

Former top-ranking Scientologist Karen de la Carriere previously told The Post, “She would always relapse.” However, a Scientology rep denied Carriere had any firsthand knowledge of the situation.

Lisa Marie also raised her children , including Riley Keough, in the church, but she decided to leave the institution in 2014 after reportedly getting into an argument with Miscavige.

The “Lights Out” singer later opened up to Ortega about her time in the church, reportedly alleging that after she got Elvis’ inheritance at 25, church members “started grooming [her] to be this person who would go out and get everyone else in.”

She also said of Cruise, “I f–king hate Tom. I met him 20 years ago. I said I never want to be in a room with him again.” Lisa Marie died in January 2023 of complications from a small bowel obstruction .

Doug E. Fresh

Doug E. Fresh confirmed to Essence Magazine, per AllHipHop.com , that he practiced Scientology after being introduced to it by his ex-girlfriend and Hot 97 radio personality, Miss Jones.

“I am the first hip-hop artist to do it,” he told the publication at the time. “Miss Jones stopped going but I continued. I found it fascinating. It changed how I thought.”

The famous beatboxer concluded, “I’ve learned how to look at things and not judge them but respect them and use it in a way that people understand that I respect them, show them love and respect their reality.”
