es tut uns sehr leid, Euch mitteilen zu müssen, dass wir die EELS-Konzerte in Deutschland in diesem Frühjahr ohne Verschulden der Band absagen müssen. Mehrere wirtschaftliche und logistische Faktoren in Deutschland, haben ein einzigartig schwieriges Umfeld für Live-Konzerte und Veranstalter im ganzen Land geschaffen. Die Auftritte der EELS sind leider keine Ausnahme. Die Band ist (verständlicherweise) bestürzt und hofft, so bald wie möglich zurückkehren zu können.Gekaufte Tickets werden dort erstattet, wo sie gekauft wurden – vielen Dank für Euer Verständnis!

We’re terribly sorry to announce that, through no fault of the band, we are needing to cancel the EELS‘ concerts in Germany this spring. Multiple economic and logistical factors in Germany have created a uniquely tough environment for live concerts and promoters nationwide. The EELS‘ performances are no exception. The band is (understandably) dismayed, and hope to return as soon as possible.Purchased tickets will be refunded where they were bought – thank you for your understanding!

Die Musik von Mark Oliver Everett alias E war schon immer ein guter Trost in dunklen Zeiten. Weil dieser Mann selbst viele dunkle Täler durchschreiten musste – und daraus kleine große Songs machte.

In Musik gegossene Traurigkeit mit unwiderstehlichen Melodien, Poesie und auch mal dunklem Humor. Das ist auch auf dem neuen Album der Eels , „ Extreme Witchcraft “, nicht anders.

Dass die Eels nun endlich auf Tour kommen, um die neue Platte (und auch „From Eart To Dora“, den Vorgänger) und natürlich einige Highlights aus dem Werk der Band vorzustellen, ist vielleicht auch musikalisch ein Weg zurück zu mehr Normalität.

Allerdings gelingt das auch erst im April 2023. Der Veranstalter musste aufgrund der anhaltenden Corona-Pandemie und wegen eines vollen Tour-Kalenders die in Europa geplanten Konzerte verschieben. Tickets behalten ihre Gültigkeit oder können, falls notwendig, vollständig erstattet werden.

Concert Review: The Eels: Lockdown Hurricane 2023 Tour

Life is hard, And so am I You’d better give me something, So I don’t die

The Eels is an American rock band known for their distinctive sound and introspective lyrics. The band was formed in 1995 by singer-songwriter Mark Oliver Everett, commonly known as E, who is the only constant member throughout the group’s history.

The Eels’ music spans a variety of genres, including alternative rock, indie rock, and folk rock, and they have gained a dedicated following over the years. The show I saw was the last of the Lockdown Hurricane 2023 Tour which had been postponed due to Covid. The opener was a rapper (I don’t like rap at all) that I hated.

He may have been good at what he does but I thought it was horrible. Next up was Puddles Pity Party starring Puddles (Mike Geier). The 6 foot-8-inch clown was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, grew up in Richmond, Virginia, and has been based in Atlanta, Georgia since 1995. The sulking serenader gained momentum after hitting the road as a guest performer on the 2010 Aqua Teen Hunger Force Live tour and the 2013 Eels tour.

He was great! Actually, it was my first time seeing him but I wouldn’t turn down another chance. He is a very good singer and really funny. The Eels then hit the stage with 5 straight rockers before even taking a breath.

The show was well done with a mix of rockers and ballads. They had an ongoing comedy bit with an announcement on screen when each of the band members achieved their exercise goal on their Apple watches. Little Joe, the youngest member, and drummer had an excellent drum solo during the Nancy Sinatra cover, Drummer Man. I really enjoyed the overall performance.

The light show and backdrop were very well done. They had a Moon that could be a vivid image of the actual Moon or change to the Earth. They would also project cartoon band member faces there too. I would definitely like to see the Eels again. E’s voice was pretty gravelly though, probably due to age and a long tour.

Eels postpone their UK, European and US tour to 2023

"We’re sure you’re getting tired of seeing announcements like this," the band said in a statement

Eels have postponed their upcoming ‘Lockdown Hurricane’ headline tour, which had been set to visit the UK next month, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Mark ‘E’ Oliver Everett-led band had been set to kick off the tour in Belfast on March 11 in support of their latest album ‘Extreme Witchcraft’ .

However, Eels have now confirmed that the tour is being pushed back to 2023 “due to the current state of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic-enforced travel and local restrictions”.

In a statement, Eels said “we’re sure you’re getting tired of seeing announcements like this”.

“When we planned our 2022 tour seven months ago we hoped we would be in a more ideal place to carry it out by now. Hopefully things are improving but unfortunately, because of the current state of the pandemic and travel and local restrictions, we’re not quite at a point where we can pull off a tour.

“Our spring ’22 tour of Europe and the U.S. will have to be postponed to spring ’23. We’d come sooner but the rest of this year has been reserved by artists who previously had to cancel. We’re extremely disappointed we won’t get to see you this year, it was going to be doubly rocktastic after not being able to tour in 2020, so we will rock you triply in 2023.”

Eels: Roundhouse, London – live review

Eels Roundhouse, London 27th March 2023

Eels return to the road for the first time since 2019 and make up for the delay with a highly energetic, hugely entertaining Roundhouse show that celebrates their last two albums — and that impressive back catalogue.

“We finally made it. Sorry for the delay,” deadpans Eels frontman Mark “E” Everett early during the band’s highly energetic, hugely entertaining Roundhouse gig.

It has been a minute — and not just since the band visited the UK. In fact, their London show is (almost) a night of firsts. It’s the first full gig they’ve played in four years (apart from Nottingham last night). It’s the first time they’ve ever played songs like Steam Engine, Amateur Hour, The Gentle Souls, and Good Night on Earth to an audience (apart from Nottingham last night). It’s the first time they’ve played the sublime title track of 2018’s The Deconstruction (apart from — well, you know the drill by now).

The Nottingham comment becomes one of several running jokes during the frontman’s stand-up-comedy-level between-song banter, but points to something far more important for Eels fans: Everett’s been cooped up since 2019 and time’s a-wastin’. (They haven’t called the tour Lockdown Hurricane for nothing.) The set kicks off with five scuzzy all-out rockers, including three from the all-out rocking new album Extreme Witchcraft, a tornado take on NRBQ’s Me And The Boys, and a hopped-up rendition of The Small Faces’ Whatcha Gonna Do About It.

“We’re proving that you can be old as fuck and still rock like fuck,” Everett declares at the end of that run. He’s not wrong. But it’s not long before the self-deprecation kicks in and he jokes about needing a 15-minute break. Admittedly they do take a breather of sorts, diversifying into what the singer may previously have described as “bummer rock”.

There are several beauties from 2020’s pandemic release Earth To Dora, which (before Nottingham, of course) had only ever been performed in public at a US radio session. The quietly optimistic title track (written about, and tonight dedicated to, their lighting designer), hopelessly devoted Anything For Boo, self-doubting Who You Say You Are, sleazy soft rocker Baby Let’s Make It Real (“Baby you’re a full meal/ The way you make me feel”), and almost smiley Are We Alright Again are all a perfect fit in a set that also digs deep into the “old shit”.

It’s A Motherfucker still floors with its quiet, brutal honesty. The scuzzy Peach Blossom has guitars as fuzzy as the titular fruit. That Look You Give That Guy captures the increasing distance in a relationship with heartbreaking accuracy. Dog-Faced Boy swings like something ZZ Top recorded in the ’70s. Individuality anthem I Like Birds can’t help but bring a smile and prompt the audience to shout “birds!” in unison.

Wonderful, Glorious is, well, wonderful and glorious even without the familiar glockenspiel. Novocaine For The Soul still shows no sign of sputtering out. Last Stop: This Town clearly doesn’t need the original’s ’90s record-scratching effects to get the audience moving. And endearing Shrek soundtrack hit My Beloved Monster undergoes its usual transformation, this time performed to the tune of The Kinks’ You Really Got Me. (Don’t laugh; it really works.)

The songs are interspersed with recurring bits parodying peoples’ obsession with counting their daily steps, band therapists, and the artificiality of encores. There’s some loose-limbed dad dancing courtesy of Everett, who’s dressed in the type of pink suit jacket favoured by 1940s big bands. The longest-serving Eel, The Chet, even has a go at telling a joke. Needless to say, he’s a better guitarist.

Rather than detract from the music, elements like these give the show a real human touch often missing from gigs this size. Everett’s “feud” with his guitar tech, Sarah, is especially effective at adding charm and offers something to remember beyond the songs. She’s someone to root (and chant) for, and his good-natured struggles with various guitars has a clear message: this is real live music performed by real live people, who sometimes make mistakes. (Plus it acts as a clever cover for any rough edges that are to be expected — and welcomed — after such a long break from the road.)

The wait was worth it. There’s nothing to apologise for, Mark.

Eels have rescheduled their Lockdown Hurricane Tour .

The band were due to hit the road in March, but have moved their UK, European and North American dates to 2023 due to the coronavirus pandemic and uncertainty surrounding international travel.

Set to tour behind their 14th studio album, 'Extreme Witchcraft', the group confirmed the news with a statement posted to social media :

"We're sure you’re getting tired of seeing announcements like this. When we planned our 2022 tour seven months ago we hoped we would be in a more ideal place to carry it out by now. Hopefully things are improving but unfortunately, because of the current state of the pandemic and travel and local restrictions, we’re not quite at a point where we can pull off a tour. "Our spring '22 tour of Europe and the U.S. will have to be postponed to spring '23. We’d come sooner but the rest of this year has been reserved by artists who previously had to cancel. We're extremely disappointed we won’t get to see you this year, it was going to be doubly rocktastic after not being able to tour in 2020, so we will rock you triply in 2023. "Hold on to your tickets, they’ll be valid for the new dates (except Colorado, see below) and if the new date doesn’t work for you you’ll be given a full refund at the point of purchase. All of the cities and venues remain the same except the Boulder, CO show will be refunded and moved to Denver’s Gothic Theatre, the venues in Vienna and Milan have changed but your tickets will be honored, and we’ve added a new show in Nimes, France."

Original tickets will be honoured, and the remainder are on sale now.

Eels is an indie rock band from Los Feliz, California, US. The group is fronted by Mark Oliver Everett (best known by the stage moniker E) who is the only consistent member of the group. Their music embraces various themes but is primarily fixated on death, family, and unrequited love.

Likewise the group’s sound is stylistically varied and expansive touching on influences from 60s pop such as the Beatles, Beach Boys, and The Kinks, crooner pop like Burt Bacharach, bizarre introspective folk, along the lines of Tom Waits, Nick Drake, and Leonard Cohen, and noise pop/lo-fi punk acts like Sebadoh, Meat Puppets, and Yo La Tengo.

The Eels did not officially form until 1995; however, Everett had been releasing material 10 years prior. In 1985 he put out his self-issued studio debut “Bad Dude in Love”, which received a very limited pressing of 500 copies. Though the album has since generated a cult following, it was not pivotal in boosting his musical profile. It was not until his move from Virginia to California that he started to garner critical and commercial recognition. In the early 90s he put out two albums through the major label Polydor: “A Man Called E” and the “Broken Toy Shop”. He supported Tori Amos for the promotion of the former of the two albums and for the latter release he recruited the help of drummer “Jonathan “Butch” Norton with whom he would go on to form the Eels alongside Tommy Walter.

Eels became one of the very first acts to sign a recording contract with DreamWorks Records and by 1996 they released their studio debut “Beautiful Freak”. The album sold well on both national and international markets and featured the three singles “Novocaine for the Soul”, “Susan’s House” and “Your Lucky Day in Hell”.

The group’s next release took a darker turn and was their 1st album to feature lyrical content directed towards family difficulties. During the making of the album Everett was dealing with traumatic events such as his sister’s suicide and his mother’s diagnosis with cancer. Many of these themes were channeled into the album’s songs. For instance “Elizabeth on the Bathroom Floor” and “Electro-Shock Blues” detailed his sister psychological breakdown and “Cancer for the Cure” was a reference to his mother’s terminal illness. Everett also wrote a song entitled “Baby Genius” for his father Hugh Everett III, an American physicist credited for theorizing the many-worlds interpretation of quantum physics. The album featured several guest artists such as Jon Brion, Lisa Germano, and T-Bone Burnett and in support for this release the group opened for Pulp on their European tour.

The Eels started off the 2000s with the release of a more upbeat pop oriented album “Daisies of the Galaxy” (2000), on which Michael Simpson, Grant-Lee Philips and Peter Buck from R.E.M. made guest appearances. “Souljacker” followed a year later and included the single “Souljacker part 1”, which was a accompanied by a music video directed by Wim Wenders (“Paris, Texas”, “Alice in the Cities”, “Wings of Desire”).

“Shootenanny!” (2003), “Blinking Lights and Other Revelations” (2005), and “Hombre Lobo” rounded off the decade. All received positive reviews, particularly their 2005 release, which was their 3rd album to feature Peter Buck and their 1st to feature Everett’s personal hero Tom Waits. “Hombre Lobo” marked the Eels 1st release in their concept album trilogy, which was followed by “End Times” (2010) and “Tomorrow Morning” (2010). Their 10th studio album “Wonderful Glorious” came out on 4 February 2013 and it’s predecessor “The Cautionary Tales of Mark Everett” was issued just over a year later.

While the Eels have never quite managed to break into the mainstream (despite their appearance on several poplar soundtracks including “Shrek”, “American Beauty”, and “Holes” ) they have been largely influential on the course of indie rock, inspiring commercially viable acts like Snow Patrol and My Morning Jacket as well as indie mainstays such as Andrew Bird, Doves, and Pinback.

Live reviews

The great thing about any Eels show is that it is always unlike their previous shows. Every tour brings new, often silly outfits (boiler suits, Adidas tracksuits, sharp suits...), a different attitude, some joke that runs through the show - a recent one had E and long time band member The Chet renewing their 'vows' - and of course great music.

More importantly though is E's refusal to just play the hits back to you as you would hear them on the album. There's always a twist, an alternative version or just a better, live feel to every song. Add to that what seems to now be a regular feature - "Knuckles' Song" - a new song written by Eels' drummer, about himself, and some great banter with the crowd and if you look around you'll see broad smiles on everyones face.

Bottom line is, if you like Eels' music you'd be hard pressed to find a better live band. Anywhere.

Brixton Academy is not the greatest of venues I was seated up with the gods and a constant stream of people walking past to the toilets/bar {including me} was starting to annoy Eels put on a good show the support was odd to say the least.

I suppose the reality is that I am not the biggest fan of larger venues but sometimes you have to accept that if you want to see a particular band you have no choice but to drive for 2.5 hours and then take the tube from north London to south London to a place where you don't really fancy being just because the band you like only wants to play there.

On the upside staff/security were all very nice beer ok not worth talking about prices we expect to be fleeced and are never disappointed.

Was gonna buy a t-shirt but couldn't be bothered £25.00 for a £12.00 tee ridiculous.

A facebook friend and I met for the first time to The Eels at The Sage in Gateshead. We weren't quite sure what to expect as neither of us had seen them before. We saw five very talented guys, who could play a variety of instrument's. The interaction with the crowd was great. The Sage was packed to the rafters, so we knew we were in for something special, we weren't disappointed. E has a great voice, and a great sense of humour. His songs are all about life, some sad, some funny. He's not your typical frontman, in fact he seems rather shy at times. If you want to see really unusual alternative rock concert, go and see them, you won't be disappointed. They gained two new fans last night.

I've been listening to the Eels since their first album and this was the first time they played a show close enough for me to catch them live. Their concert in Vienna was fantastic. The band played many of my favorite tunes from their lengthy discography, including quite a few fan favorites/ The chosen venue suited the sound of the band quite well, and you could easily hear the nuance of their different instruments. During the first break between the main set and the encore, E chose to skip the traditional encore game and instead walked out into the audience to hug random fans while the rest of the band stayed on stage for a series of bows.

Great show!

Well what can one say Mark is as 'interesting' as you should expect. That being said, it was one hellofa show.

He always has an assortment of tunes & this batch were slanted to a 50s garage band sound. The Eels were especially tight for this gig. Mark's vocals (and as always the quality of the lyrics) were awesome.

The crowd was mostly 30-40 somethings...but me being in my 60s can't complain of the youngsters!

The Observatory is a great sound venue, with easy visual & access to the stage. You are part of the show.

Rate the performance A with the crowd only a B+.

Mark/Eels still a must see if you get a chance. Truely a genius songwriter/singer.

This was the 6th time I have seen Eels live them and they are always completely different. Heavy rock in boiler suits & gasmasks - Tick. Suits and boots with a full orchestra - Tick. Just E and the Chet completely acoustic - Tick... But this time round there were 5 of them and set up like a 1930s skiffle band with E mainly on piano. And they were just awesome. E was on hilarious form. The rest of the band looked as though they were having a ball. And boy, do they play well as a unit - SHEER CLASS ! 5 stars out of 5

Amazing show once again, great energy and very fun as well.

It was the 3rd time I was seeing them, and I've never been disappointed.

They mixed rock songs (essentially from the last album, I think) and calm songs (essentially from previous albums, I think) and it was a perfect set list.

I'm a long time Mark Everett fan, seening him twice before last night. I left early,disappointed; missing the special feel of the previous smaller,indoor, shows. Though I gotta say this show was missing the uniqueness he usually brings. Such a pity, but I've had similar experiences recently with outdoor shows by 'indoor' artists..

This was my first Eels show...and I loved it so much...!!!

2 hours nonstop dancing, singing and laughing..

A perfect sound and much more than a perfect voice...

lots of humour sense and energy!

And...my favourite track..."The look you give that guy"...what more can I expect??

What a return by Mark Oliver Everett. First couple of songs extremely rock n roll but not really the right sound set up. Ee s significant voice couldn't be recognised clearly. Afterwards sympathic blues rock eels style. Loads of songs were rearranged. Loved it.

Understanding Technical Indicators

Stands for Relative Strength Index. It is a momentum indicator used to identify overbought or oversold condition in the stock.Time period generally considered is 14 days. RSI reading below 25 is interpreted as oversold. RSI between 25 & 45 is interpreted as a bearish condition. RSI between 45 & 55 is interpreted as a neutral condition.RSI between 55 & 75 is interpreted as a bullish condition. RSI reading greater than 75 is interpreted as an overbought.

Stands for Moving Average Convergence Divergence.It is a trend following momentum indicator. For calculation three moving averages are taken which are 9 day EMA, 12 day EMA & 26 day EMA. The 26 day EMA subtracted from the 12 day EMA alongwith the 9 day EMA which is the "signal line", together give buy/sell signals. If the MACD is above 0 and crosses above the signal line it is considered to be a bullish signal. If the MACD is below 0 and crosses below the signal line it is considered to be a bearish signal.

It is a momentum indicator. It shows the location of the close relative to the high-low range over a set number of periods. Time period generally considered is 20 days. Readings above 80 indicate a security is overbought. Readings between 55 & 80 indicate Bullish condition. Readings between 45 & 55 indicate Neutral condition.Readings between 20 & 45 indicate Bearish condition.Readings below 20 indicate a security is oversold.

It stands for Rate of Change. It is a momentum oscillator that takes the current price and compares it to a price "n" periods ago. Time period generally considered is 20 days. The ROC is plotted against a zero line that differentiates positive and negative values. Value above 0 indicates Bullish condition. Value below 0 indicates Bearish condition. Value equal to 0 indicates Neutral condition.

It stands for Commodity Channel Index. It gives an indication of trend change & also the momentum within the trend. Time period generally considered is 20 days.CCI is relatively high when prices are far above their average & relatively low when prices are far below their average. The CCI typically oscillates above and below a zero line, above zero line it enters into positive territory & below zero into negative territory. Normal oscillations will occur within the range of +200 and −200. Readings above 200 imply an overbought condition, while readings below −200 imply an oversold condition. CCI between -200 & -50 implies a bearish condition. CCI between -50 & 50 implies neutral condition. CCI between 50 & 200 implies bullish condition.

Williamson%R(14)

It is a momentum indicator which indicates the current closing price of the stock in relation to its high & low of the past 14 days. Its purpose is to tell whether a stock is trading near the high or the low, or somewhere in between of its recent trading range. Readings between 0 and -20 imply an overbought condition, readings between -20 to -50 implies bulish condition, readings between -50 to -80 implies bearish condition and readings between -80 to -100 imply oversold position.

It stands for Money Flow Index. It is a momentum indicator that measures the flow of money into and out of a security. Time period generally considered is 14 days. MFI considers both price & volume to measure buying and selling pressure. Very high MFI that begins to fall below a reading of 80 while the underlying security continues to climb is a reversal signal to the downside. Conversely, a very low MFI reading that climbs above a reading of 20 while the underlying security continues to sell off is a reversal signal to the upside.

Stands for Average True Range. It is a volatility indicator which indicates the degree of price volatility at an absolute level compared with its 9 SMA. Time period generally considered is 14 days. If the value is greater than its 9 SMA it considered to be Highly Volatile. If the value is less than equal to its 9 SMA it is considered to be Less Volatile. It does not provide any indication of price trend.

It stands for Average Directional Index. It indicates only the trend strength. It is a lagging indicator; that is, a trend must have established itself before the ADX will generate a signal. Time period generally considered is 14 days. When the ADX line is rising, trend strength is increasing, and the price moves in the direction of the trend. When the line is falling, trend strength is decreasing, and the price enters a period of retracement or consolidation.A falling ADX line only means that the trend strength is weakening, but it usually does not mean the trend is reversing.

Bollinger Band(20,2)

Stands for Bollinger Bands. It is a technical analysis tool defined by a set of lines plotted two standard deviations (positively and negatively) away from a simple moving average.The upper and lower bands are typically 2 standard deviations +/- from a 20-day simple moving average.It is believed the closer the prices move to the upper band, the more overbought the market, and the closer the prices move to the lower band, the more oversold the market. Approximately 90% of price action occurs between the two bands. Any breakout above or below the bands is a major event. The breakout is not a trading signal.

Easy Trip Planners Limited is an India-based company that operates online travel platform. The Company provides reservation and booking services related to travel and tourism through ease my trip-portal, ease my trip app or in-house call-center. In April 2020 — only a month or so into the COVID-19 pandemic — my wife and I were running out of things to do. The novelty of Zoom calls with friends was wearing off. We’d watched lots of movies and TV. We were itching to get out of our apartment, but with the virus still raging, we couldn’t risk being around other people. Then we had an idea: Why not go for a drive?

For our first trip, we drove the length of Little Tujunga Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest. After that, we were hooked. In the ensuing months, we crisscrossed the Santa Monica Mountains and made trips into Los Padres National Forest and beyond.

My wife bought me a California road atlas, and it became part of our scenic drive ritual: We’d consult its pages for inspiration, looking for two-lane roads and state highways that squiggled through mountain ranges or meandered through deserts. After returning home, I’d highlight our route. Four years after our first drive, the atlas is full of highlights documenting our travels — and there’s still a lifetime’s worth of backroads we haven’t covered yet.

No matter where we go, each drive gives me a deeper appreciation for the incredible range of landscapes in Southern California. And these journeys have led to many rewarding discoveries, from out-of-the-way diners to new trailheads for hiking and biking.

A mountain path winds around mountains in the distance

If you’re tired of visiting the same places, it’s time to hit the road. These two trips — all within a three-hour drive of the city — will get you started.

Los Padres National Forest and Carrizo Plain National Monument This route traverses winding mountain roads through Los Padres and spits you out near the southern entrance to Carrizo Plain — a vast preserve of native grassland and a hotspot for wildflowers (at least on some years ) and birdwatching . From Interstate 5, take Exit 205 and head west on Frazier Mountain Park Road. This two-lane road changes names several times as it ascends into the San Emigdio Mountains, passing forested slopes and epic canyon views along the way.

After about 42 miles, you’ll meet California 166. Take a right here and then a left on Soda Lake Road to enter Carrizo Plain National Monument. Drive northwest for 35 miles to the parking lot for the Soda Lake Trail, a short boardwalk that gets you up close to the park’s salt-crusted lake. If you plan ahead, you can also book a guided tour of Painted Rock, a sandstone outcrop with Native American rock art.

Hungry? Head back the way you came, take a right on California 166, and drive west 15 miles to the Cuyama Buckhorn , a renovated ’50s motel, restaurant and bar. The eatery’s Santa Maria-style tri-tip is superb, and if you grab a room, you can turn this scenic drive into a full weekend escape .

Volcan Mountain and Julian This route will take you to Julian , a mountain town famous for its apple orchards and delicious pies. From Interstate 15, take Exit 58 for California 79. Take a right on Pechanga Parkway and head south. The road becomes Pala Temecula Road and emerges into a wide canyon with mountains towering on either side. Take a left at Pala Mission Road and continue east on California 76, which hugs the San Luis Rey River before ascending more than 1,000 feet up a chaparral-covered ridgeline.

After some hairpin turns, the road levels off and skirts Lake Henshaw, a picturesque reservoir. Take a right on California 79, and after 10 miles, take a left on Wynola Road. Follow that road for about 3.5 miles, then take a left on Farmer Road to arrive at Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve. Stretch your legs on the Five Oaks Trail , a 1.2-mile path that ascends the western flank of Volcan Mountain and offers sweeping views of the orchards below.

With your appetite revved up, head south on Farmer Road into Julian and make a stop at the Julian Pie Co . Grab a well-deserved slice of apple pie and some apple cider and rest your feet at a picnic table while you chow down.

1. Race plankton in Manhattan Beach In celebration of Earth Day, the Roundhouse Aquarium will hold a day full of educational activities inside and outside its facilities. Highlights include dolphin spotting, a fish feeding, crafts, games, a “shark shack” and, yes, plankton racing. The festivities kick off at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and go until 4 p.m. The event is free, but be sure to register ahead of time at roundhouseaquarium.org .

2. Go gardening in San Pedro Give back to the land by planting native species, removing weeds, mulching and watering the White Point Nature Preserve’s garden with the folks at Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. You’ll also have the chance to enter a raffle and take a guided nature walk. As a bonus, refreshments will be provided by Starbucks to keep you cool and hydrated. The three-hour event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday. All volunteers under age 16 should be accompanied by an adult, and all volunteers under age 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver at the event. Register at pvplc.com .

3. Stretch your legs on Venice Boulevard CicLAvia is back. And this time it’s shutting down a 5.75-mile stretch of Venice Boulevard that connects Palms, Mar Vista and Venice Beach for walkers, joggers, bikers, roller skaters, unicyclers, penny-farthings, pogo sticks — anything as long as it’s completely powered by humans. There will be three local hubs along the route where you’ll be able to partake in family-friendly activities, pump air into your bike’s tires, refill your water bottle and use the restroom. Be sure to reference CicLAvia’s digital map so you can scope out the local businesses you’d like to visit along the way. It all takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The Klamath River in Northern California has turned brown and muddy, but that’s a good thing. As Times writer Ian James reports , it’s a side effect of the largest dam removal project in history, which aims to restore the river to its natural state. Four dams are being removed along the Klamath, and the river is passing freely through tunnels in three of them, draining reservoirs and churning up an estimated 2.3 million tons of sediment that had settled along the bottom of those man-made lakes. Although the turbid water might look ugly, restoration advocates and tribal leaders see it as a sign of healing. The muck is passing out of the Klamath, and new life — everything from salmon heading upstream to native plant seedlings along the riverbanks — will soon take its place.

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
