Additionally, you’ll need a computer and Wi-Fi network that meet the minimum system requirements. Browsing the Internet on a Smart TV

Browsing the internet on your smart TV is easy. First, press the HOME or MENU button on your remote. Then select Apps or Applications, and select Internet Browser from the list of available applications. You may need to select All Apps or All Applications if the Internet Browser is not displayed. From there, you can enter any URL you would like to browse and begin exploring the internet on your smart TV!

It offers a universal search feature that allows you to enter your search term and get relevant results quickly. You can also use the web browser feature to explore the internet. Unfortunately, it is not possible to install Google Chrome or other browsers onto the LG Smart TV, but you can cast from an external device with Chrome installed. Works for videos, playback controls broken, tab cast broken.

Hello, Thank you for making this much needed extension! While it works for videos, the playback controls don't seem to function and there are no right-click menu options for casting a tab. I'd be happy to help beta test/develop any new versions to help you iron out the remaining bugs. Let me know. Thanks, Alex

Developer Response ,

Dear user, Please check the latest update of the app. It solved a lot of issues. You can also write me an email to [email protected] and I will gladly provide you with more details. Regards

Only function is asking for money

I don't understand why developers create apps that only display a message demanding money. If you want to sell apps, then sell them. I feel my time has been wasted when a developer puts a "free" app on the app store that has none of the functionality advertised. If the app, as downloaded, does nothing, I feel the developer has been dishonest. I feel lied to. This might be a good app. After a fee has been paid. The developer has updated many times over several years. So I'd expect it to work pretty well -- if paid no attention to the reviewers who say it doesn't work even after paying for it. I know it's tough to find an app that does what this one promises to do for free. I would have a few dollars for this one if it had been a paid app. But advertising it as free when it does nothing except ask you to upgrade to pro -- that's misleading. Shady. And it leaves me with no trust in the developer. This could be the most awesome Roku streamer ever written (reviewers don't seem to think so), and I'll never know, now, because I feel I was lied to and don't want to reward that behavior. :(
Dear user, Thank you for your review, I'm taking notes of all of them. The application has a free version, you can test your TV before upgrading - the main app presents all TVs and broadcasting options (including Youtube and video files). Your TV is displaying the video directly from Youtube, not from the extension, the extension just instructs the TV what to play, so the stuttering is strange, it makes me think that the problem is somewhere on the Internet connection. Also, please check the latest update of the app, it solved a lot of issues with Nvidia Shield. I hope this helps and please write me to [email protected] if you need my assistance.

Absolutely phenomenal

This app has the Test to TV function so you can try it out. NO it is not Free and most of the FREE ones are crap. I tried several before I found this gem. This is part one of the program and although not free it's only $4.99 for a lifetime. Part 2 is the Free add on Mirror for Smart TV. This works both with Chromecast for mirroring the browser on TV. And it also works great on my 5 yr. old TCL Roku TV. The cool part is when I am watching an internet streaming movie, I can close my laptop and the entire movie play flawlessly. Make sure to set the Video to Smooth Play and download the Audio Driver so it will play on TV Audio. Seriously good program. Just take 5 minutes to figure it out instead of whining "it doesn't work" or that it is NOT Free. It's a great program.

Introduction

Casting from your iPad to an LG Smart TV is a convenient way to enjoy your favorite videos and movies on a bigger screen. Whether you want to share photos with your family or stream a TV series with friends, casting allows you to effortlessly mirror your iPad’s screen to your LG Smart TV.

In this guide, we will explore different methods to cast from your iPad to an LG Smart TV. We will cover the use of AirPlay 2, HDMI cables, and third-party apps to suit your preferences and available resources.

Before we dive into the methods, it’s important to note that casting allows you to display the content of your iPad on your TV without losing any quality. This means that whatever you do on your iPad – whether it’s playing games, watching videos, or browsing the internet – will be mirrored on your LG Smart TV in real-time.

Moreover, all the methods we will discuss in this guide are beginner-friendly and do not require any technical expertise. So, if you’re ready to explore the different ways to cast from your iPad to an LG Smart TV, let’s get started!

Prerequisites

Before you begin casting from your iPad to an LG Smart TV, make sure you have the following prerequisites:

  • An iPad with iOS 12.3 or later. Make sure your iPad is updated to the latest version of iOS to ensure compatibility with the casting methods.
  • An LG Smart TV with built-in casting capabilities. Check if your LG Smart TV supports AirPlay 2 or has an HDMI port for wired connections.
  • A stable Wi-Fi network. Both your iPad and LG Smart TV should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network for casting to work seamlessly.
  • If you choose to use an HDMI cable, ensure you have a compatible HDMI cable that can connect to both your iPad and LG Smart TV.
  • If you opt for a third-party app, make sure to download and install it from a reputable source. There are several casting apps available on the App Store that cater to various casting needs.

Once you have met these prerequisites, you are ready to proceed with the casting methods. Remember to double-check that all the devices are properly connected and functioning before attempting to cast from your iPad to the LG Smart TV.

In the next sections, we will discuss three different methods you can use to cast from your iPad to an LG Smart TV. Whether you prefer wireless or wired connections, there’s a method for you. So, let’s explore these methods and start enjoying your iPad’s content on the big screen!

Method 1: Using AirPlay 2

If you have an iPad running on iOS 12.3 or later and an LG Smart TV that supports AirPlay 2, you can easily cast your iPad’s screen to the TV using this built-in feature. Follow these steps to get started:

  • Ensure that your iPad and LG Smart TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • On your iPad, swipe down from the top-right corner to access the Control Center.
  • Tap on the Screen Mirroring icon, which looks like a rectangle with an arrow pointing upward.
  • A list of available devices will appear. Select your LG Smart TV from the list.
  • If prompted, enter the AirPlay code provided on the TV screen to establish a secure connection.
  • Your iPad’s screen will now be mirrored to your LG Smart TV. You can navigate through your apps, play videos, display photos, or even browse the internet, and everything will be shown on the TV.

AirPlay 2 not only allows you to mirror your iPad’s screen, but it also enables you to stream audio and video content directly from compatible apps. You can enjoy movies, TV shows, and music on your LG Smart TV using apps like Netflix, Hulu, and Apple Music. Simply open the app on your iPad and look for the AirPlay icon, then select your LG Smart TV to start streaming.

Using AirPlay 2 is a seamless and user-friendly method to cast from your iPad to an LG Smart TV. Enjoy the convenience of sharing your iPad’s content with friends and family on the big screen without any additional hardware.

Method 2: Using an HDMI cable

If your LG Smart TV does not support AirPlay 2 or if you prefer a wired connection, you can use an HDMI cable to cast from your iPad to the TV. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Check if your iPad has a Lightning or USB-C port. This will determine the type of HDMI adapter you need to connect your iPad to the TV.
  • Purchase an HDMI adapter that is compatible with your iPad’s port. There are various options available, such as Lightning to HDMI or USB-C to HDMI adapters .
  • Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the adapter and the other end to an available HDMI port on your LG Smart TV.
  • Plug the HDMI adapter into your iPad’s Lightning or USB-C port.
  • On your LG Smart TV, select the corresponding HDMI input where you have connected the cable.
  • You should now see your iPad’s screen mirrored on the LG Smart TV. You can navigate through your apps, play videos, display photos, and perform other activities.

This method provides a reliable and straightforward way to cast your iPad to an LG Smart TV, ensuring a stable connection and high-quality display.

Using the HDMI cable method also allows you to stream content from apps that may not support AirPlay, giving you more options for enjoying your favorite shows and movies on the big screen.

Remember to check the compatibility of the HDMI adapter with your iPad model to ensure proper functionality. This method is ideal for those who prefer a direct and secure connection between their iPad and LG Smart TV.

Method 3: Using a third-party app

If you’re looking for alternative ways to cast from your iPad to an LG Smart TV, you can consider using a third-party app. There are several casting apps available on the App Store that offer additional features and functionalities. Follow these steps to cast using a third-party app:

  • Go to the App Store on your iPad and search for a casting app that suits your needs. Some popular options include “AllCast,” “AirBeamTV,” and “Mirroring 360.”
  • Download and install the chosen app on your iPad.
  • Launch the casting app on your iPad and follow the on-screen instructions to connect to your LG Smart TV.
  • Once the connection is established, you can start casting your iPad’s screen to the LG Smart TV. The app will provide options for mirroring, streaming media, and controlling playback.
  • Utilize the app’s features to navigate through your iPad’s content and enjoy it on the big screen.

Using a third-party app gives you additional flexibility and control over the casting process. These apps often offer advanced functionalities like screen recording, customizable settings, and compatibility with a wide range of devices.

Before using a third-party app, make sure to read reviews, check for compatibility with your iPad and LG Smart TV, and verify the app’s reputation. Choosing a reliable and well-rated app will ensure a smooth and secure casting experience.

This method is particularly helpful for those who want more customization options or need to cast to LG Smart TVs that do not support AirPlay 2 or have limited connectivity options.

Take advantage of the various third-party casting apps available to enhance your casting experience and enjoy your favorite content on a larger screen.

Casting from your iPad to an LG Smart TV opens up a whole new world of entertainment and convenience. Whether you choose to use AirPlay 2, an HDMI cable, or a third-party app, each method allows you to enjoy your iPad’s content on a larger screen with ease.

AirPlay 2 provides a seamless and wireless way to mirror your iPad’s screen and stream media directly to your LG Smart TV. It’s compatible with the latest iPad models and offers a convenient way to share your favorite movies, videos, and apps with others.

If you prefer a wired connection, using an HDMI cable is a reliable option. This method ensures a stable and secure connection, allowing you to enjoy your iPad’s content on the TV without any loss in quality.

For those looking for more customization options or compatibility with older LG Smart TVs, using a third-party app is a great alternative. These apps offer additional features and functionalities, giving you more control over the casting process.

Remember to consider the compatibility of your devices and the available resources when choosing the method that suits you best.

Now that you know the various methods of casting from your iPad to an LG Smart TV, you can start enjoying your favorite content on the big screen. Whether it’s streaming movies, sharing photos, or playing games, casting enhances your viewing experience and brings your iPad’s content to life.

So, grab your iPad, connect it to your LG Smart TV, and immerse yourself in a whole new level of entertainment and convenience!

How to install (and remove) LG smart TV apps

Make the most of your TV with LG smart TV apps

How to install (and remove) LG smart TV apps

Like any smart TV, you can add apps to LG smart TVs to add all sorts of functionality, from streaming movies and shows on Netflix to listening to music on Pandora.

LG uses its own unique software called webOS to control the streaming services that it supports on its smart TVs. Consequently, it uses a different nomenclature and menu system to find, add and remove apps. You can find LG smart TV apps to download through the LG Content Store or right from the home screen.

Here's how to get started:

Use the Home button on the remote control to open the home screen option. You'll see the LG Content store—the company's name for its app area—on the horizontal row of options. LG uses a shopping basket icon to denote the content store.

How to install (and remove) LG smart TV apps

Hover over the basket icon and it will reveal another horizontal menu of tabs above the first. This list will show you popular and featured apps. You can scroll through this list horizontally to the right and if you see what you want on the list, like Spotify , then click on it and the app will install automatically. It usually requires a software update as part of the process and then it will ask for your sign-in information for your existing account. (If you don't have one, you can create a new account for that service.)

How to install (and remove) LG smart TV apps

3. Go to the Store

If you don't see an app you want, click on the LG Content store basket icon. Next you'll see the main content store screen where LG offers several ways to look for apps, including a selection for newly updated apps, the most popular apps, premium channels (like Disney+ and Hulu), as well as an option to scan through the full list of apps.

How to install (and remove) LG smart TV apps

4. Make a Selection

The All Apps section is divided into 8 general categories, such as Entertainment and Life. Fortunately you can also do a search from this screen using the magnifying glass icon on the top right of the screen. (Results will include not only apps but also movies, TV shows, YouTube videos with an option to search the Web.)

5. How to Delete an App

Should you decide later that an app is no longer interesting or that you have cancel a subscription you never use–or you just want to clean up your app options–you can easily uninstall apps from your LG TV. Go to the LG Content Store and select My Apps. From this screen you can choose an app and then click on the trash can icon on the far right of the screen to delete that app.

Apps can also be uninstalled from the home screen by highlighting the app you wish to delete, pressing up to open the contextual controls, and then selecting the "uninstall" option. If you want to re-order the apps in your home menu, you can also do that using the same process.

LG S95TR review: sensational surround sound for your LG TV

I f you've splashed out on one of the best TVs and want to seriously beef up its sound output, then there are plenty of soundbar options that'll do the job. But here I'm talking about the best soundbars for LG TVs specifically, where you seek high-end audio, truly immersive surround sound, and perfect integration within your setup.

Enter the LG S95TR, the company's 2024 flagship, which comprises one soundbar, a wireless subwoofer, and two separate rear speakers. That means true surround thanks to its 9.1.5 channel arrangement – nine catering for centre/left/right/sides, one for centre sub-bass, and five overhead height channels (three up front, two at the rear) – assuming you've got the space and ample plug sockets to accommodate.

But that's not the S95TR's overall sell: this soundbar also includes LG's WowCast feature, meaning wireless connectivity (with 2020 LG flagship TVs and later), and there's also LG's WowOrchestra, which uses a synched LG TV's speakers to deliver an even wider and more convincing soundstage. It's a dazzling option for LG TV owners who can afford the pricey outlay, but the reward is true cinema-like sound in your own home.

LG S95TR: Price & Availability

Speaking of price, the S95TR – which some regions refer to as the 'US95TR' (it's effectively the same, though, so don't fret) – is set at £1699 ($1499 / AU$1749) upon launch. That's the same as its S95QR predecessor, so there's no generation-on-generation price increase. The shopping widget embedded above shows you can already buy it for less, though, so be sure to double-check.

Still, that's a lot of money to fork out on one of the best soundbars , even if it does have enough speakers and channels to be considered a true surround system. In the context of its competition, that's equivalent to Samsung's price-matching HW-Q990D – but if you want similar results for less, I'd look to last year's LG S95QR or Samsung HW-Q990C to save a little without compromising too much on the features.

LG US95TR review: Features & What's New?

So how does this 'SR' model update 2023's 'SQ'? It's a fairly moderate upgrade: the S95TR now features triple up-firing speakers, enhancing on the QR's world-first dedicated centre up-firing driver, for enhanced height presence in its output.

The biggest new feature of the S95TR, however, is the introduction of it being WowCast Ready. This means it can wirelessly connect to a compatible LG TV, so you needn't worry about wires – that's ideal for freeing up an HDMI socket, for example. I think it's also just a really cool feature, plus it's lossless – so there's no compromise to quality.

Otherwise you can expect much the same of new soundbar package and old: namely it's a four-unit package, that main soundbar being 125cm long (6.3 tall, 13.5 deep), with a separate wireless subwoofer and two rear speakers. There's a remote in the box, the 'magic wand' style, just as you'll find in most LG TVs' boxes too.

However, one lacking in this generation is the absence of HDMI 2.1 compatibility. While Samsung has upgraded its HW-Q990D to passthrough 4K/120Hz with variable refresh rate (VRR) , LG hasn't gone for that spec. That's only really going to affect gamers, but for this sort of money it's a feature that should have made the cut in 2024.

LG S95TR review: Design & Setup

Setting up the LG S95TR is really simple. I reckon it was actually harder getting everything out of the massive box and untwisting all the cable-ties to be honest. But I still had a lot of fun upgrading my TV's soundsystem to this super surround sound setup for this review.

First step is parking the soundbar in front of your TV and, if not using LG WowCast, deciding if you're going to use the HDMI eARC (read more about enhanced Audio Return Channel here) to connect. That'll use up one of your TV's HDMI ports, though, usually the second 4K/120Hz capable slot.

However, LG does also include an additional HDMI input for passthrough on the soundbar itself (noting the 60Hz typical restriction) which offsets that issue to some degree. If anything I'd actually want more HDMI inputs here, like you'll find on the JBL Bar 1300 , for example.

Next up plug in the subwoofer and separate rears. Note that each unit requires its own power socket (as does the soundbar itself), so ensure you have enough available. All units connect wirelessly, though, without being prompted in my experience, which then forms the full surround network in double-quick time.

From here you're good to go, but I'd suggest getting hold of the LG SoundBar app (for Apple iOS and Google Android devices), as it's here you can easily swap between so-called 'Sound Effect' options – I'd call them sound profiles more accurately, though, including 'Cinema', 'Music', 'Sports' and more – select the input source, calibrate for the room, and tweak volume levels across seven outputs, plus adjust equalisation.

The app is a far more visually comprehensive form of what the bundled remote offers – although using the wand you can make Sound Effect and source changes. I do find the S95TR's multi-coloured LED light display to be paltry in its information for a soundbar of this price point though – it offers a trio of white/yellow/red/green LED illumination to partly inform you of changes made. A visual display would be much more useful, although I can see that would also theoretically disrupt the symmetry of the soundfield in a device with as many speakers as this.

LG US95TR review: Sound Quality

The LG S95TR is no slouch when it comes to compatibility and quality: it can play formats up to 24bit/96kHz, so Hi-Res Audio, and most importantly plays nice with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X sources – these being the two most prolific three-dimensional sound formats today (there's more, too, with DTS Digital Surround, and Dolby Digital, plus AAC/AAC+ supported to serve classic surround encodings too).

While the figures are one thing, I've been most impressed by just how much of a difference the S95TR makes to a home cinema experience. Having reviewed a recent TV with this soundbar disconnected (on purpose, for review purposes, I'm not crazy), plugging everything back in after and the LG delivers a whole world of change.

The soundbar and subwoofer combination deliver a rich tapestry, which allows low-end, mids and highs to live freely – so you'll get clear speech delivered while bass burbles below, no one element distracting from the other. And if you don't have quite enough of one or other element for your tastes, then the app's EQ can add further distinction. You may well want to up the bass impact, too, as LG's take is less forward than, say, Samsung's equivalent.

In terms of surround, the addition of those rear speakers makes a marked diference – you'll never get true immersion such as this from, say, a Sonos Arc single-bar solution. The LG's rear speakers include overhead channels to project sound upwards, too, which gives a greater sense of the overhead filling that hemisphere of sound space.

That said, however, and despite there being a trio of height channels on the main soundbar, the S95TR isn't the most adept at getting sound to leap upwards, oddly enough. It's really good, sure, it's just not great at projecting the upward portion into that sphere as strongly as some of the competition. But when you feed the soundbar a Dolby Atmos sound source, I find it's the rear channels that really add to that true immersive feel.

However, that's where WowOrchestra makes a difference in my opinion, as using a synched LG TV's speakers right to their very top edge gives this additional height and more natural pinpoint delivery of audio based on what's happening on the screen. I've used an LG OLED G4 and this S95TR soundbar at LG's UK headquarters before now, but do note I've not had the same pair for this full review (it's a Philips OLED 809 that's been catering for display duties).

Overall, the upgrade this LG soundbar can deliver is nothing short of incredible. Even for less-than-ideal sources, the app's Surround Sound Setting (on/off) will permit lesser sources to be upmixed and output via all available channels – meaning you'll gain this all-encompassing sound whether listening to premier or stereo. Even music sounds great – although I did have some hiccups with the subwoofer cutting out when paired with a Bluetooth connection.

LG S95TR review: Verdict

If you're the owner of one of LG's recent flagship TVs then the LG S95TR is the perfect solution to deliver an incredible surround sound experience. This four-unit package is bassy yet classy, bold without being overbearing, delivering superb audio for TV, movies and gaming alike right across the frequency range.

Why an HDMI 2.1 passthrough standard was omitted is perplexing (especially as the key rival Samsung offers this – although only gamers are really going to be concerned), and as an upgrade compared to its S95QR predecessor there's nothing of real note here for non-LG TV owners – the big extra ticket item being WowCast wireless compatibility within that ecosystem.

Still, mate the S95TR with a worthy LG OLED TV and it'll deliver impactful and immersive sound, plus the benefit of WowOrchestra to really enhance that LG ecosystem experience. It'll sound almost as great on non-LG TVs, too, as I've found in this review – with a 65-inch Philips OLED 809 paired up, I've been in home cinema heaven during my weeks of testing.

Also consider

If you're not worried about connecting wirelessly to your LG TV then the previous S95QR model , despite lacking as many upfiring drivers, is largely just as good – and won't cost you as much. Both offer WowCast to sync TV speakers with soundbar output, making both options as the best soundbars for LG TVs .

If you don't possess a modern LG TV specifically, then I'd also suggest looking to the Samsung HW-Q990D , which delivers a more bass-forward and more immersive experience by comparison. It's ideal with Samsung TVs, too, thanks to Q-Symphony sync (Samsung's equivalent of LG's WowCast) .

About the LG G4

What we like, what we don’t like, should you buy the lg g4, related content.

Stunningly bright OLED image

Superb out-of-the-box accuracy

Incredible gaming support

webOS still lags behind other OS

Color brightness a step behind QD-OLED

A close-up of the LG G4 OLED TV on a wood entertainment center.

In a change from last year, the 55- and 65-inch sizes come with a table stand instead of a wall mount.

The LG G4 is available in five sizes—55-, 65-, 77-, 83-, and a whopping 97-inches. Our review unit is a 65-inch model we received on loan from LG.

Here’s how the series shakes out in terms of MSRP pricing:

  • 55-inch (LG OLED55G4SUB), $2,299.99
  • 65-inch (LG OLED65G4SUB), $2,799.99
  • 77-inch (LG OLED77G4WUA), $3,999.99
  • 83-inch (LG OLED83G4WUA), $6,299.99
  • 97-inch (LG OLED97G4WUA), $24,999.99

With OLED TVs especially, the different sizes in a TV series tend to perform similarly because of how the technology works, but there’s one caveat with the 2024 LG G Series TVs. All sizes except the 97-inch use Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology, which improves the brightness of WOLED displays over those that don’t use it. While we don’t expect performance differences between the 55- to 83-inch sizes, the 97-inch likely won’t reach the same brightness levels of the other four sizes.

In a change this year, the 55-inch and 65-inch now include a table stand instead of a wall mount. A wall mount is still available separately. The three largest sizes still come with a wall mount instead of the table mount.

LG G4 specs

  • Resolution: 4K (3,840 x 2,160)
  • Display type: WOLED
  • Smart platform: webOS 24
  • Color: DCI-P3 color space/10-bit chroma resolution
  • Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM): Yes
  • Processor: a11 AI Processor 4K
  • ATSC 3.0: No
  • Other features: AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, Nvidia G-Sync compatibility, Game Optimizer, Filmmaker Mode, Amazon Alexa, Hey Google, Apple AirPlay 2, Apple Home

The LG G4 comes with LG’s Magic Remote. It can function as both a traditional remote, or as a wand. The motion-activated feature can be accessed by waving the remote at the TV, causing an on-screen cursor to appear and track the wand’s movements.

Connectivity

The back of an LG G4 OLED TV showing HDMI outlets.

The LG G4 has a full complement of HDMI 2.1 ports for excellent gaming support.

On the back of the G4 is a cutout that splits the connections between side- and down-facing positions. Here’s what you’ll find on the LG G4:

  • RF connection (cable/antenna)
  • Ethernet (LAN) input
  • Digital audio output (optical)

Performance Data

Before testing each TV, we make sure the panel is on and receiving a continuous signal for at least 2 hours. Our 65-inch G4 received this standard warm-up time before any readings were taken. In addition, the TV received the latest firmware updates at the time of testing.

For both SDR and HDR tests, we’re using LG’s Filmmaker picture mode. We’ve chosen this setting because of its accuracy, but performance may vary depending on which picture mode is enabled. For example, you might experience a brighter picture with a different mode enabled, but it may negatively affect color temperature and overall color accuracy.

To get a sense of the TV’s average performance, we use a standard ANSI checkerboard pattern for most of our basic contrast tests. We also use white and black windows ranging from 2% to 100% to test how well the contrast holds up while displaying varying degrees of brightness.

Our peak brightness measurements are taken with sustained windows ranging in size from 2% to 100% (full screen) to represent the TV’s peak brightness over a sustained period of time. Specular highlights (like brief flashes of reflected light) might reach higher brightness levels, but not for sustained periods of time.

I'll expand on our test results throughout the review, but for now, here are some key takeaways:

  • HDR contrast (brightness/black level): 464.1 nits/0.0001 nits (ANSI checkerboard)
  • SDR contrast (brightness/black level): 409.7 nits/0.0001 nits (ANSI checkerboard, OLED Pixel Brightness at default of 80)
  • SDR contrast (brightness/black level): 490.4 nits/0.0001 nits (ANSI checkerboard, OLED Pixel Brightness at maximum of 100)
  • HDR peak brightness: 1,502 nits (2% white window)
  • HDR color gamut coverage (DCI-P3 1976 uv/10-bit): 98.2%
  • HDR color gamut coverage (BT.2020 1976 uv): 73.95%
  • SDR color gamut coverage (Rec.709): 96.6%

While most of the TV’s AI Service settings are disabled in accuracy-driven picture modes like Filmmaker, we nevertheless checked to ensure that the following settings were disabled: AI Picture Pro, AI Brightness, and AI Genre.

To get a sense of the TV’s performance at peak brightness, the G4’s Peak Brightness setting was set to High. For SDR tests, we kept the OLED Pixel Brightness slider at its default of 80, but we also took contrast measurements with it maxed out at 100. For HDR tests, Expression Enhancer and Dynamic Tone Mapping were disabled.

Throughout all tests, additional brightness settings (like Adjust Contrast and Black Level) were kept at their default position (85 and 50, respectively), while Auto Dynamic Contrast and Motion Eye Care were disabled.

For Clarity settings, we lowered the TV’s Sharpness slider to 0 and disabled the following settings: Super Resolution, Noise Reduction, MPEG Noise Reduction, Smooth Gradation, Real Cinema, and TruMotion.

Brighter than ever

An LG G4 OLED TV on a wood entertainment center with a Reviewed sign above the TV.

Highlights looks even more spectacular on the G4 than in the past thanks to improved brightness.

The G4 is the second OLED to feature LG’s Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology, which harnesses a microscopic lens layer to redirect light to the viewers’ eyes. Now in its second year of action, the impressive display tech has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that it’s a viable path forward for all LG OLED TVs. Plus, it’s now available in the 83-inch version of the G4, which wasn’t the case last year.

The G4 is brighter than its predecessor by a smidge, but a combination of improved processing and a sprinkle of engineering magic has made modest gains feel major. In HDR, the G4 scrapes 1,500 nits of brightness when displaying small specular highlights, which is the brightest measurement we’ve ever lifted from an LG OLED. The Samsung S95D offers brighter highlights on paper, but in action, most viewers wouldn’t notice much of a difference.

It’s difficult to describe the effect when combining that level of brightness with self-lit pixels. There’s a scene on the Spears & Munsil Ultra HD Benchmark of a desert town at sundown, where faraway street lights twinkle across the dim evening landscape. On the G4, these tiny specks of light are searingly bright and just a few pixels wide at most. The effect that this has on the picture is dramatic, giving the scene a real sense of depth and clarity. The scene isn’t as impressive on a standard WOLED without MLA, and altogether lost on an LED TV.

Like last year’s model, the G4 offers a slightly higher average picture brightness in SDR than HDR, and at around 500 nits, it’s adequately bright for daytime viewing. A high-end mini-LED TV is still more accommodating for sun-drenched living rooms, but even if your space is brighter than average during the day, the G4 will nevertheless hold up well.

Out-of-the-box accuracy with an extensive toolbox of settings

Home theater enthusiasts shopping in the G4’s price range are probably more compelled than the average TV owner to shell out for a professional calibration, but in case you hadn’t planned on it, you’ll be relieved to hear that you can totally get away without one.

In SDR and HDR, LG’s Filmmaker mode is totally dialed in. Across the grayscale, the G4 averages a DeltaE (color error) of about 2. Considering that a DeltaE of 3 is considered to be the threshold of perceptibility, that average is superb. Its colors are accurately rendered regardless of content, too.

In HDR, it tracks EOTF nearly perfectly, and while it demonstrates minor over-brightening in midtones, it won’t be noticeable to most eyes. In any event, we’d rather have minor over-brightening in midtones than under-brightening near black—something OLED TVs often struggle with that the G4 manages to avoid.

Those with a penchant for tinkering will love looking under the G4’s hood. New this year is the ability to make fine-tuned adjustments to the TV’s Dynamic Tone Mapping setting, depending on your content type and preference. It’s a feature that sets the G4 apart from other high-end models, as you won’t find it in even the extensive settings of a high-end Sony TV.

Unbeatable gaming support

The G4 is one of the year’s best TVs for gaming. All four of its HDMI inputs support 4K gaming at 120Hz (or up to 144Hz if you link it up with a PC). Few TVs offer this level of flexibility.

You’re getting Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), Variable Refresh Rate, with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and Nvidia G-Sync compatibility. Xbox owners can enjoy Dolby Vision-supported Xbox titles, too (which is not something you can say about the Samsung S95D).

The LG’s Game Optimizer mode looks terrific on the G4. The Game Optimizer menu, which can be pulled up quickly while gaming, puts all of the G4’s gaming-related settings in one convenient place.

The best designed G Series OLED yet

The side of the LG G4 OLED TV on a wood entertainment center and brick background.

The included stand is better than the optional one that was available in previous years.

For as long as LG’s flagship OLED has borne the moniker “G,” it has looked its best when hanging on a wall. Once upon a time, the name stood for “Gallery,” since the TV was—and still is—built from the bezel up for wall-mounting, as you would a portrait.

This year, LG has opted to ship the 55- and 65-inch versions of the LG with a pedestal-style stand in the box, while all of the larger sizes in the series arrive with LG’s Slim Wall Mount. Essentially, all of the sizes are designed with wall-mounting in mind, but this year, 55- and 65-inch owners don’t have to pay for a stand.

Even better, the G4’s stand is actually good. A cylindrical piece connects a flat, rectangular base to the back of the panel and also serves as a nifty cable manager. There’s still a moderate amount of wobble going on if you happen to jostle the panel, but far less than there was in previous years, and no more than, say, the Samsung S95D.

The G4 isn’t as thin as other OLEDs in the LG catalog, but this is by design, so that the TV will sit flush against a wall. It’s still exquisitely thin for a TV, and the brushed metal border adds a glint of sophistication.

As is tradition, the G4 ships with LG’s Magic Remote. For better or worse, it hasn’t changed much over the years. I find myself using the Wii-like motion controls less and less these days (save for the occasional on-screen keyboard), and I sure do wish it had a backlight.

webOS still doesn’t make a case for itself

An LG G4 OLED TV on a wood entertainment center with a Reviewed sign above the TV.

We’re still not huge fans of the webOS smart platform that comes with every LG TV.

If you’re relying on your next TV’s smart platform to be a daily driver, webOS will get the job done. It just won’t get the job done as well as a TV equipped with Google TV.

From Roku to Google, every smart platform is saddled with sponsored content. When it comes to ads, what sets these platforms apart is how many of them there are, and to a lesser extent, how often they get in the way of what you’re trying to click on. Roku keeps its ad count low, oftentimes displaying just a single ad alongside its list of channels. Google TV dishes out a higher amount of sponsored stuff, but it’s spread out across the home page in a way that doesn’t feel disruptive.

LG’s webOS, on the other hand, stifles. Not only are its pages inundated with eye-catching content you’ll almost certainly never click on, but it’s arranged on the screen in a way that visually confuses. For instance, as I write this, the Recent Input ribbon is prominently displaying the Oppo DVD player currently plugged into HDMI 1. Confusingly, there’s a selection of recommended streaming options right next to the most recently accessed input dubbed “Summer Sports with LG.” It’s the result of too much real estate being dedicated to promoted content.

It’s also just not as snappy as what we’ve experienced lately on TVs offering Google TV. Updating apps is a surprisingly slow process on webOS, and there are hiccups when jumping from one page to the next.

If pressed, I’d pick LG’s software experience over Samsung’s, if only for LG’s well-integrated menu options, which are easier to access and navigate than the menu options of this year’s Samsung TVs.

Not quite as colorful as its quantum dot-enhanced rivals

Let’s be clear about something: From a color standpoint, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with what the G4 is working with. Colorful content, like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse , nature documentaries, and flashy, AAA gaming titles are hypnotically vibrant, particularly if you’re tapping into HDR.

But if utmost vibrancy is what you’re after, QD-OLEDs like the Samsung S95D or the Sony A95L are the way to go, as their quantum-dot displays are capable of brighter, more voluminous color. If you take a look at how closely these TV’s meet the newest 4K color standard, BT.2020, you can get a clearer sense of the difference. The G4 covers about 74% of the BT.2020 color gamut, while the S95D and A95L cover about 87% and 89%, respectively.

To our eyes, the difference between the two is subtle across most content types, and it’s tough to get a sense of QD-OLED’s color advantages unless you’re looking at two TVs side by side. That said, until the technology is iterated further, color volume remains one of the most significant differences between WOLED TVs like the G4 and its QD-OLED competitors.

Yes, it’s one of the best TVs of the year

An LG G4 OLED TV on a wood entertainment center with a Reviewed sign above the TV.

The LG G4 stands as one of the best TVs we’ve ever seen.

The G4 is the best TV LG has ever made. Its picture quality is staggeringly good, its gaming features couldn’t be more extensive, and it’ll look fantastic on a wall or media console. Really, our only major beef has to do with webOS, which can be avoided entirely if you intend to lean on an external streaming device.

Between the top-performing OLED TVs on the market—the G4, the Samsung S95D, and the Sony A95L—you can’t go wrong with any of them. However, the G4 is a better fit for folks who want a maxed-out home theater experience. Its Dolby Vision support sets it apart from the S95D, and its full slate of HDMI 2.1 inputs sets it apart from the A95L.

That said, the S95D offers brighter, bolder color. In addition, the A95L still holds the honor of being the best TV we’ve ever seen. Both of these competitors tap into quantum dots, but the A95L also has the benefit of leveraging Sony’s industry-leading picture processing. But truthfully, no matter which flagship OLED TV you treat yourself to, you’ll be walking away with one of the best TVs ever made.

The G4 is in a rare class of TV that stands to radically transform whichever living room it resides in. If you’ve got the means, we can’t recommend it enough.
