what is the best browser for 10.6.8 in 2021?

I have been trying to find a browser that I can install onto an older mac: 10.6.8. Can anyone recommend a browser that I can use. I have been trying to install various firefox 48.0.2 and am still trying to find something that is functional. Most are not loading web pages. thanks.

I used to use ArcticFox until recently but then found out that SpiderWeb was better. In ArcticFox couldn't properly use some of my favorite websites so I started looking for an alternative and found SpiderWeb which can do what ArcticFox couldn't do. It also feels faster.

Question   How to get Safari to work on MacBook Pro with MacOS 10.6.8 ?

Someone gave me a MacBook Pro with MacOS 10.6.8. Apparently this is an older MacBook, since it has a CD/DVD drive, among other things. However I thought this would work just fine for at least browsing the internet. However, I can't find Safari on the computer (there's just a question mark) nor is Chrome supported on this MacBook. I also can't find Edge. I also I'm having a hard time finding out how to just reinstall MacOS on it. Do you think that Apple has simply abandoned this Mac and taken away it's power for connecting to the internet or is there any hope I can get this thing working other than just a computer for playing Zuma's Revenge?

I found out that this is a mid-2009 13-inch MacBook Pro. It had MacOS 10.6 installed. I finally got a version of Safari to install. But then it wouldn't show most websites, such as YouTube, for being out-of-date. So I installed MacOS X 10.11 El Capitán. Well it worked and Safari could open many websites. But I thought I'd do a complete wipe of the hard drive and reinstall MacOS X 10.11 El Capitán. BIG MISTAKE. Every time I go to reinstall MacOS X I get to a point that it says the service is temporarily unavailable, check back later. I've been trying to make a bootable DVD or USB with zero success. But since this is the only Mac I, or anyone closely related to me have, I don't have any way of getting the DMG file to burn (or convert to ISO and then burn). This is frustrating!! I guess I'm going to have to buy a copy on a DVD off eBay or something...  

I finally got PowerISO to work. Seems that Window's thinks it's a virus. So I got the DMG file burned to a bootable USB. But so far the Mac hasn't recognized it. I've tried and tried several times, and nothing. However, now that I've got Power ISO working, I'll try to find a blank DVD and see if I can't burn to that and try to install from the DVD drive.

So reading more and more it seems the only way to make a bootable USB or DVD is with another Mac. The instructions say to download the DMG file, then open the file which will install an app, then burn the app over to a USB or DVD as an image. But in order to complete the first step another Mac is necessary, and it also has to be a Mac that can install the El Capitan operating system since either new or older will not complete that step. I also tried changing the date on the MacBook but that only made it worse: it wouldn't even get past the first step of verifying that the Mac is compatible with El Capitan.

Reinstall Safari after applying 10.6.8 v1.1 updaters

If you updated Safari to version 5.1 and then applied the OS X 10.6.8 v1.1 update, you will need to redownload the latest version of Safari again.

When Apple released OS X 10.6.8, a number of people found problems including issues with the printing system that resulted in print jobs hanging. To correct some of these issues, Apple rereleased the update as version 1.1 of the updater; however, if you have applied this update, you may (or may not) notice that your Safari version has reverted.

Apple released the original OS X 10.6.8 update before it released the latest Safari 5.1 update, and then released the revised 10.6.8 updater about 5 days after Safari 5.1 had been out. As a result, the Safari 5.1 update was not included in the 10.6.8 update and people who had been running OS X 10.6.8 and updated to the latest version of Safari will find their installed Safari versions will be back at version 5.0.5 instead of 5.1.

Ultimately this should not be much of a problem for users, as the versions are very close and should still support most of the same features; however, there is a possibility that the older version of Safari may handle a few things differently. OS X should detect the older version of Safari and offer you an update through Software Update, but if not, then you can download the latest version of Safari from Apple's software downloads page .

I have an IMAC that I purchased new on April 28th 2008 Present OS Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 Snow Leopard Hardware Overview: Model Name: iMac Model Identifier: iMac8,1 Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores: 2 L2 Cache: 6 MB Memory: 2 GB Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz Boot ROM Version: IM81.00C1.B00 SMC Version (system): 1.29f1 Serial Number (system): QP81800QZE5 Hardware UUID: 115F86BC-D956-50BC-B0E7-8824DF52FF14 Lately, more & more sites have been informing me of this: "We noticed that you recently accessed Fidelity.com using Safari 5, which will not work with our new Accounts & Trade experience. For the best and most secure experience on our website, please upgrade your browser to the latest version" I have checked & no 'new' Safari updates are available. If I upgrade to OS X Yosemite, will this upgrade Safari as well ? If the answer is yes, I would also appreciate any/all tips for the upgrade. Thanks

Suggest you upgrade the memory. Your iMac will take up to 6GB, 1 x 4GB and 1 x 2GB regardless what operating system you go to. As Nick said you can upgrade to Yosemite OS X.10 if you wish, and Mavericks OS X.9 is no longer available. Personally think Mountain Lion OS X.8 would be better than Lion. It is available for the same $19.99 as Lion, and there is no need to go to Lion, directly to Mountain Lion, or indeed Yosemite if you wished. http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377/os-x-mountain-lion

I have that basic machine. Mountain Lion was a better OS than Lion was for me anyway. I would still upgrade to at 4GB RAM for Mountain Lion. It really depends on what you do, but with 2GB I remember using all the RAM a few times.  

I've decided to go with Mountain Lion. I will also upgrade my memory. Thanks for all the help guys! This is a great forum

Apple releases Mac OS X 10.6.8

Fire up Software Update! In what may be the last Snow Leopard-era OS update ever before Lion’s official first roar, Apple on Thursday released Mac OS X 10.6.8.

In addition to what Apple terms “general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac,” the update tweaks the Mac App Store to prepare for the release of Lion. It also resolves an issue that caused Preview to crash, improves IPv6 support and VPN reliability, and identifies and removes known variants of the Mac Defender Trojan horse . There are a number of other improvements included in the update, all of which are detailed in an Apple support document .

You can download the entire update directly from Apple’s website if you prefer: Apple provides both  a 474.2MB incremental update , along with the heftier  1.08GB combo updater .

Apple also released the 10.6.8 update for Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server . Among other things, it fixes issues displaying videos in Wiki pages for Firefox and Internet Explorer, improves the reliability of sharepoints with Time Machine, address the reliability of vacation email notices, improves international character handling and authentication support for iCal Server, properly enables earlier updates in Software Update Server, and improves reliablity for cascading Software Update Servers. For a full list of fixes, follow the link above. Both a 542 MB incremental update and a 1.27GB combo updater are available directly from Apple.

In addition to that update, Mac OS X Server users can also now grab  Server Admin Tools 10.6.8 , which revises a number of administration tools and utilities for the server software. It’s available via Software Update as well as in a 255.9MB update from Apple’s support downloads site.

Before you begin

Before installing new software, it's a good idea to back up your Mac .

Make sure that your Mac is connected to the internet . You should be able to access websites or receive email, for example.

Use Software Update

Open Software Update:

From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Settings. Click General in the sidebar of the window that opens, then click Software Update on the right.

If you don't have System Settings in the Apple menu , choose System Preferences instead. Then click Software Update in the window that opens.

Don't see Software Update settings?

When you open Software Update, it automatically begins checking for new software.

If new software is available for your Mac, click the button to Update or Upgrade. What's the difference between an update and upgrade?

If new software is not available for your Mac, Software Update says that your Mac is up to date. Software Update shows only software that is compatible with your Mac model. For example, if your Mac is not compatible with a later version of macOS or Safari, Software Update does not offer it to you. Which Mac models are compatible?

Before installation begins, you will be asked to enter your administrator password. It's the password you use to log in to your Mac. Forgot your password?

During installation, your Mac might restart and show a progress bar or blank screen several times. If installation is not successful, learn what to do .

If you don't see Software Update

If your older Mac doesn't include Software Update, use the App Store instead. It's in your Applications folder. Click the Updates tab in the App Store to check for updates, or search for the software by name.

Version Safari compatible avec mon Mac

ton Mac est a jour sur sa dernière version possible et donc Safari aussi, il est forcément a jour. Normalement c'est la 13.1.2

Tu ne peux plus évoluer et pour ouvrir certains sites, je te recommande Firefox

installe et connecte toi avec Firefox pour Mac, qui lui, a ses propres certificats. 

De plus, tu peux:

Vider les caches : 

Dans la barre de menu, clic sur Développement > Vider les caches . Il existe également un raccourci clavier: option (alt) , command, E.

redémarre Safari : command + R

Vider l’historique: Dans la barre de menu, clic sur Historique > Effacer l'historique

Si Safari n’ouvre pas de page web ou ne fonctionne pas comme prévu sur votre Mac - Assistance Apple (FR)

Older version of Safari not loading pages

I reformatted and installed Mac OS X to old iMac. Is updated to version 10.4.11 and won't update any higher. The version of Safari it is running is not loading pages, and I'm getting an error message can't establish a secure connection. I've done all the troubleshooting Apple suggests. Full internet connection. I can get on a Google homepage, I can do a Google search and when I click on the link it can't establish a connection. Trying to install google chrome, page won't load. Before I reformatted it was running OS X 10.6.8 Wondering why it won't update operating system higher?

I totally get it. Our house looks like an Old Macs' museum. We have Macs as old as a 8100 set up and still working.

iMac 5,1 translates to "Late 2007." It can run up to 10.7 "Lion." That is still available free from this page:

To effectively help you, we need to know more about your iMac. You may not have an upgrade path. Do "About this Mac..." from your Apple menu. In OS 10.4 the return will have this format:

Click the "More Info..." button (blue arrow) to launch System Profiler. In the first page of Profiler:

find the code for your computer where I've indicated with the red arrow and tell us that code. it's not perfect but should help us define what upgrade options you have—if any.

You could try downloading Firefox 45.9.0 ESR. This is a really old version of Firefox (the current one is 119.0) that hasn't gotten security patches, much less new features, in a very long time. According to the archived article, the final update to this Extended Support Release version was on April 19, 2017.

So it's not going to be a panacea for all of your Web browsing / Web browsing security problems, but it might not be a bad thing to have on your Mac. You could switch back and forth between Safari and Firefox depending upon which – if either – had the fewest problems with a particular site.

Tried to but pages keep getting an error message can't establish a secure connection. I know I need to get an updated browser to stop getting error on every page. Weird I can get google search page and it takes me to links for browser downloads but thats it...every link I click on won't open.

you’re not going to be able to get a modern browser for a machine running a version of OS X that old.

It’s just not going to happen.

That machine is effectively no longer usable as an Internet connected device.

this is an old 2007 iMac. I reformatted it and reinstalled OS X 10.4.11 I am connected to internet via built in airport. System updates is showing no updates, but I know it should be updating to at least 10.6.8 because that is what was installed and running before I reformatted and reinstalled the operating system. This is frustrating because I know the error message is because of the old browser, and yet I cannot download a newer browser because the error message stops the page from loading.

I think you're facing a classic "chicken and egg" or "Catch-22" problem.

I believe that Web security standards since the Tiger (10.4.11) and Snow Leopard (10.6.8) days. Modern sites use forms of https:// security that the versions of Safari in those older operating systems do not understand. It's been so long since sites moved to newer forms of security that nobody thinks about how that locks out older browsers, even when the sites in question are ones offering updates for old computers.

I dug around in my Apple stuff and found Snow Leopard. Installed it and it updated to 10.6.8 so a little better at opening links... Installed chrome and a few more pages are able to open. Thanks for the info.

iMac5,1 makes it a 17” or 20” Late 2006 iMac that can’t run anything higher than Lion. If you do upgrade to Lion, you will lose the ability to run PowerPC-only programs in translation. (Lion devoured the original Rosetta.). I don’t know if the upgrade is free, or if, after all of these years, you would still have to buy a $20 code from the Apple Store to make it work.

Got Foxfire Browser 45.9.0 that James suggested and the "Ole Mac" is opening more pages than Safari or chrome. I might try Upgrading to Lion tomorrow, but Snow Leopard is running fine...Thanks again :)

What version of Firefox? The latest version is 119. If FF fails, try Brave browser. If both of them fail, you have other problems that need addressing.
