By: Author Wendy Kennar

Updated for 2023

Here in Southern California we may not experience fall quite like the rest of the country, but that doesn’t mean we are completely absent of slightly cooler weather and the changing color of leaves. As the days become shorter, trees respond to the decreasing amount of light by producing less chlorophyll — let all the science nerds know you know.

The green color disappears and the yellow and orange colors become visible in the leaves as part of their fall splendor. So grab your coat and your camera because we’ve gathered up a list of the best places to experience fall in Southern California!

Plus, we’ve got a great new SoCal Halloween Guide here. And check out this cool website for fall colors all over California .

✅ Spooky Escape Rooms

While escape rooms are open all year long, there are a select few that are best enjoyed during spooky season.

These are the scariest and spookiest escape rooms in Southern California.

25. Zoe Escape Room in Fullerton

This escape room is wild.

You must be at least 16 years old to experience this escape room due to the high intensity of the experience.

It’s a 100 minute escape room, with live actors, and it’s FULL CONTACT.

Many quit before it’s over.

Do you think you have what it takes?

26. The Hide At Escape Room Era In Anaheim

This is another INTENSE escape room, but this one is no contact, so it’s not quite as terrifying.

The premise here is that you’re in a serial killer’s basement while he’s away from home and you need to collect evidence before he returns.

Like it says in the name, hiding is required throughout the experience to not get caught.

You’ll also have a night vision camera on you to record your entire experience, which will be emailed to you after.

It’s easily the scariest experience I’ve ever had in my life.

The Hide Escape Room in Anaheim

27. 13th Basement Escape Room At The Exit Game In Anaheim

This escape room is a little different from the two mentioned above.

13th Basement is more of a parody of horror themed escape rooms.

You’ll be blindfolded to begin your experience and the rest of your time here will feel like you’re living in the movie Saw.

It’s meant to be spooky and scary, but in a fun way.

This cemetery is massive and it’s a little harder to find individual grave sites, but there are many iconic people buried here.

The main reason we visited this cemetery was to see Walt Disney’s grave site.

He’s buried with several of his family members in a great location up on a hill amongst a garden.

A little ways away from him is Clark Gable.

33. Long Beach Historical Cemetery Tour

This year, the event takes place on Saturday, October 26th.

It’s put on by the Historical Society of Long Beach and it has been running since 1995.

It takes place in Long Beach’s oldest cemeteries which sit adjacent to one another at 1195 E Willow, 90806.

The self-guided tour features eight stories of people buried there and each year the stories are new.

At the gravesites are costumed actors telling their stories.

In addition to the grave side stories, they have an amazing Dia de Los Muertos exhibit.

Presented by Danny Flores who’s collected altars and other related items for about 30 years.

They also have all day presentations about Cemetery History and Japanese families in Long Beach.

The grave side presentations begin at 9 and are delivered every 20 minutes until 2:40.

To see all the gravesite enactments and visit a couple of the all-day presentations takes about three hours.

People are welcome to stay all day if they choose.

Tickets can be purchased online or at the cemetery on the day.

Top 10 Places To Visit In Southern California In The Fall

Southern California is a quintessential falltime oasis where the mild temperatures, clear days, and sunshine highlight the vivid transformation that is slightly delayed but right on time, according to Mother Nature, and for all of you who haven't had the chance to escape and drool over the scenery.

Catch the fantastic foliage of yellow, golden, orange, and crimson colors peaking in the second half of October through early November. The slightly cooler air is perfect for midday hikes or a trip to the beach—never too far away in SoCal! These ten getaways are ideal to unwind after colorful adventures for every group to taste the fall flavors of Southern California.

Antelope Valley

Sunset view of a street in Lancaster, California

Part of LA County's desertic northern area, Antelope Valley is an undercover paradise in the autumn. Home to two cities amid a unique nature landscape with many outdoor pursuits, Lancaster boasts a mural-painted cultural district downtown. There is also an art museum, historic buildings, and a delicious food scene, including wine-tasting rooms. From the three sub-AVAs (American Viticultural Areas) to the trail-spliced Saddleback Butte State Park, you can unwind or stay active in your favorite way over the colorful SoCal scenery in the fall.

A Golden State indeed, with hikes for sights through Devil's Punchbowl County Park and the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve, the Indian Museum State Historic Park offers insights into the region's past. From tasting your way around Sierra Pelona, Leona Valley, and Antelope Valley of the High Desert to the family-friendly Brian Ranch Airport U-Pick Orchard with fruit picking, a pumpkin patch, and on-site-made products for sale, you can bond, split up, or find your niche in Antelope Valley.

A SoCal city called "Pumpkin" in Spanish with a big fall festival in October at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains? What sounds like a dream fall escape is very much accurate, with "only here" attractions and mild temperatures for epic fall foliage hikes. Home to over 8,000 acres of rugged, beautiful hills and trails, the three natural preserves—Liberty Canyon, Udell Gorge, and Kaslow—showcase rare plants and volcanic formations. There's wildlife, hiking, and biking between Agoura Hills and Malibu Lagoon State Beach, with the serene Malibu Hindu Temple, an Instagram-worthy set of structures, halfway.

Malibu Creek State Park served as the set for M*A*S*H scenes, with camping, picnic spots, and fishing in the 25-mile Malibu Creek, the only stream channel through the Santa Monica Mountains. Owned by one of the legendary razor company owners, the historic King Gillette Ranch is a trail-spliced nature park with Spanish revival mansions, ponds, creeks, bridges, and access to the scenic Mulholland Highway. From nature along Gillett Ranch Loop, Gillett Ranch Summit, Inspiration Point, and Las Virgenes View, you can also find architecture, like the Leonis Adobe, one of the oldest buildings in Los Angeles.

Descanso Gardens

The Descanso Gardens becomes a foliage wonderland in the autumn through nine botanical collections for nature lovers and family pursuits like a miniature railroad. Located in Los Angeles at 1418 Descanso Dr., La Cañada Flintridge, your group will have a hoot seeing gorgeous blooms in autumn like roses, camellias, ginkgo, and toyon berries! It is a real urban retreat at your doorstep for quiet strolls through serene nature you would have a hard time finding in the city, like a redwood forest, streams, a lake, and a bird sanctuary.

The US's largest camellia garden dates back to WWII, when Japanese-Americans were exiled to internment camps, including the nursery owners FM Uyematsu and F.W. Yoshimura, who sold their esteemed collection of camellias to Elias Boddy, an estate owner. Programmed events here include morning yoga, weekend walks, kids' story time, tutorials, and festivals, as well as free entrance every third Tuesday of the month for a leisurely day off work! In between, you can visit an onsite art gallery, a house museum, a cafe, and a gift shop for memorabilia of the lovely times.

Idyllwild, an idyllic town in the San Jacinto range of the Inland Empire, is an ideal falltime escape or even a day trip from LA for every group to chill out in the foliage. From the crisp trails to the colorful mountains for the most avid and cozy cabin stays for everyone to unwind after, there is also the irreplicable Nature Center at 25225 Hwy. 243. The one-way 2,6-mile Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail and the 3.3-mile on-way Deer Springs Trail are fun and family-friendly for a weekend escape, and the legendary rock formations are just another quick hike away.

Nestled among tall pines, you can enjoy the views and the scents of the sweet-smelling cedars even over your morning java from Higher Grounds. The alternative getaway for peace and quiet in a small-town atmosphere must include incredible browsing through independent shops and restaurants like Mile High Cafe and the Middle Ridge Winery Tasting Gallery. Nearby, Lake Hemet is a fishing paradise with hiking trails around, and Lake Fulmor Day Use Area is just to the north.

Jackson Lake

Aerial View of Jackson Lake, Angeles National Forest

Tucked within the trail-spliced Angeles National Forest, Jackson Lake, one of the few lakes in the San Gabriels, may be small but serene and awash in fall colors among groves of oak and Jeffrey pine. Just west of Wrightwood, alongside the Big Pines Highway, this 7-acre "sag pond" is a depression on the notorious San Andreas Fault, which has other unique features along its length. Popular and topped up with fish during the spring and summer, Jackson Lake Day Use Area sees few visitors in the fall, with the remaining rainbow trout, bluegill, and largemouth bass up for grabs.

Make it a two-in-one getaway in the little town that comes alive in fall with the most vibrant colors along the tree-lined streets, where shops and eateries peak through the foliage and comfortable accommodations come at laughable prices. You can stock up for a picnic in Wrightwood for the broad beach and grassy area around the lake, with floating and non-motorized boats around, while an actual picnic area on the south side includes tables and a restroom.

Aside from being a famous pie-eating mountain town, Julian, overlooking San Diego County, is fall-worthy in countless ways, just under an hour east of the city. Home to a myriad of leaf-peeping opportunities along the colorful slopes and cozy accommodations to tuck you in after an evening out at the town's cider house, you can get away in your favorite way from the daily stressors. With Pioneer Museum and Eagle Mountain Mining Company for heritage insights, the Volcan Valley Apple Farm and Apple Starr Orchard welcome a family day of scenic apple-picking strolls.

The gold mining town turned into a quaint mountain retreat with specialty shops and historic streets, follows the traditional four-season scenery, with a fabulous fall atmosphere of harvests and foliage under the bright skies and crisp days. There is so much to do in the high country outdoors, so pack a picnic and follow your heart to the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve, William Heise County Park, or Lake Cuyamaca in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park! Nearby, the Menghini Winery, Volcan Mountain Winery, and Julian Beer Company, right next to the famous Julian Pie Company, will unwind you in the evening.

Lake Arrowhead

Autumn view of scenic Lake Arrowhead in the Southern California mountains

Coming alive in the summer, this scenic mountain resort town and alpine lake gets a second wind in the fall, with leaf-peeping trails and browsing through the festive vibe in the village that really celebrates the season. Lake Arrowhead is epic for trailing, with beautiful North Shore and South Shore Trails winding around the lake's different bays and the smaller Papoose Lake and Grass Valley. Make a plan, pack a picnic, and venture both ways over an epic weekend escape to get the most out of the area's fall foliage and unwind by the water. A quick drive away, the 0.7-mile loop of the Heaps Peak Arboretum Trail and the 1-mile Seeley Creek Trail are easily scenic strolls, while the Exploration Trail is a one-way, 4.5-mile moderate hike.

Dockside Arrowhead Village, the downtown area with a unique European air, boasts several half-timbered buildings in a Bavarian style that fit the mountain atmosphere like a postcard. Start with an inspired breakfast at Belgium Waffle Works before an hour-long ride on Arrowhead Queen for different views of the lush banks against the sparkling waters aboard a two-wheeler along the lake's perimeter. This quintessential SoCal getaway, ensconced within the San Bernardino National Forest, is a hop away from the Rim of the World Scenic Byway for a quick drive to the breathtaking Rim of the World Viewpoint.

Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden, Arcadia

Beautiful afternoon nature scene at Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden

The LA County Arboretum is the place to sync up with nature along 127 acres of stunning gardens and natural landscapes featuring historic structures and learning spaces. Located at 301 N. Baldwin Ave., this official wildlife sanctuary introduces you to plants and trees from around the world and various birds, including the famous peacocks. Set dramatically against the San Gabriel Mountains, Meadowbrook Garden is awash in the glorious fall colors, while the Peacock Cafe, with a picnic area on-site and a vast lawn just outside, invites you to unwind after.

With no reservation, visit anytime with regular $15.00 admission, discounts for students, seniors, and kids, and come with an adult if you are under 18. You can also become a member with free entry in every beautiful season, including other participating venues in the American Horticultural Society's reciprocal admissions program. There are also no-fee days every third Tuesday of the month that require advance tickets on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Oak Glen Apple Festival: The Harvest U-Pick Greeting Area Curated By Los Rios Ranchos, via Gerald Peplow / Shutterstock.com

Nestled in the apple-growing foothills, the historic town of Oak Glen is a quintessential family fall escape, central to LA, Orange, and Riverside counties, with apple and pumpkin picking around through Thanksgiving. With everything related to apples and other fruit harvested from the surrounding orchards and farms, you will catch foliage on-site and scenic drives between each venue. This peaceful hideaway wakes up as the mile-high destination in the harvest season with u-pick farms, fun mazes, live music downtown, and the most worthy Oak Glen Cider Company.

Nothing gets you going like a stack of apple pancakes at Apple Annie's Restaurant, a bakery famous for its 5-pound apple pie. You can stroll around the nearby Oak Tree Mountain with its fun slide or hop on Oak Glen Road, the looping road against the San Bernardino National Forest, for a scenery-ridden drive to the next farm. The best include Snow-Line Orchard, Los Rios Rancho, Willowbrook Apple Farm, and Heritage Orchard, with many offering family pursuits like petting zoos, horseback rides, wagon rides, and even pressing your own cider.

Santa Ynez Valley and Solvang

Street view in Solvang, California, via Arevik / Shutterstock.com

Why not combine the semantics of viticulture with Danish culture for one epic fall getaway in the south of the state? From wine tastings and vineyard strolls that catch falltime "fire" in a look-alike Italian countryside to four towns in the valley, Solvang transports you to Denmark with cultural attractions, shopping, and authentic food! The endlessly rewarding Santa Ynez is among the state's premier wine regions, with harvest on the roll through the golden grape vines before the last fruit is pressed to become fine wines distributed throughout the country.

Get in the fall harvest spirit at the vivid town of Los Olivos, which revolves almost 100% around wine with vineyards, yellow and crimson, and 30 tasting rooms. Aspire to a European picnic with a bottle to go, or even a beachy escape to pop one open some 30 miles south in Santa Barbara by the ocean! Lompoc features the Wine Ghetto, with over a dozen tasting rooms in an industrial setting. In contrast, the area's most popular tasting routes include the Santa Rita Hills and Foxen Canyon Trail.

The Golden State transforms into a golden state, north to south, with plenty of places to taste the best! From the wine country to mountain ranges and idyllic lakes, you can also visit botanical gardens in your city for an urban escape into nature.

Why not aspire to a European getaway in the small town of Lake Arrowhead or the viticulture destination of Santa Ynez? The rich history and vibrant culture at the hands of SoCal hospitality will make you feel at home with budget stays, local cuisine, and kid-friendly pursuits for the fall.

Fall destinations in California

Fall Destinations in California

I was born and raised in the Bay Area, and I’ve been to a lot of the best places to visit in California in fall. From outdoor trips to Lake Tahoe to urban escapes in Los Angeles and pumpkin-rich visits to Half Moon Bay, I’ve covered the state from east to west and north to south.

Doing so has given me the chance to experience many of the best fall destinations in California. I’m always impressed by how many exciting places there are to discover in the shoulder season between summer and winter.

Whether you want to head to the Sierra Nevada, go to a Gold Rush town, soak up the fall sunshine in SoCal, or visit one of the best places to go for Halloween in California , there are lots of places you can travel to this season.

Tips for Fall Travel in California

Before booking your trip, bear in mind that some areas and times can be especially crowded in fall. This is particularly true when it comes to places to see fall colors and big travel periods like Thanksgiving, fall break for schools, and public holidays like Labor Day and Veterans Day. Halloween can get busy, too.

As such, it’s a wise idea to make reservations for things like accommodation well before you depart. You can often get better rates and have a wider selection to choose from. You can see hotels and book a room here .

If you’re planning to visit somewhere particularly seasonal or popular, make sure to reserve well in advance and check things like traffic conditions before you go.

1. Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay tops my list of the best fall destinations in California. Widely regarded as the pumpkin capital of the world, Half Moon Bay and the wider area produce more than 3,000 tons of pumpkins each harvest season.

That makes it the perfect place to visit in the fall. Half Moon Bay is home to some of the best pumpkin patches in California. From Andreotti Family Farms Pumpkin Patch to Farmer John’s Pumpkin Farm, Pastorino’s Pumpkin Farm, and Arata’s Pumpkin Farm, there are lots to choose from.

Half Moon Bay’s pumpkin patches are ideal spots to choose the perfect pumpkin to carve into a Halloween jack-o’-lantern. They also offer all kinds of entertainment. There’s everything from mazes to tipis, family fun, and food to enjoy.

Halloween pumpkin patch in Half Moon Bay

As if that’s not enough, there’s an annual Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival on Main Street. A free weekend event, it celebrates all things pumpkins, wine, art, and food. There’s even a World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off and a fun run.

If all that sounds good to you, it’s wise to stay overnight when you visit. Traffic getting into and out of Half Moon Bay in fall can be heavy on weekends, so basing yourself in town will not only allow you to avoid the worst of it, but also take advantage of all HMB has to offer during the season.

You can book accommodation in Half Moon Bay here . There are plenty of options, from beachfront hotels to coastal apartments and more. My top pick is the Beach House Hotel . This place is right on the coast in the heart of all the harvest fun. I’ve stayed here before and I loved the views and location. You can book a room here .

2. San Francisco

San Francisco is one of my favorite fall destinations in California. The City by the Bay is a great destination in September and October, not least because the weather is usually much warmer than it is in summer (there’s a reason they call August “Fogust”). In fact, many locals consider this the best time to be in town.

Consistently warm weather and blue skies mean better chances of seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, taking in the city’s famous views, and enjoying the California sunshine without the fear of fog rolling in.

Beyond the weather, fall is the best season to go on San Francisco’s famous ghost tours . They’ll take you through Nob Hill and Union Square on a haunted walking tour where you’ll hear eerie stories and learn about notorious characters from an expert guide. They’re fun ways to get into the Halloween spirit and see some of SF’s haunted mansions. You can book one here .

San Francisco Halloween Decorations

Even if you’re not visiting around Halloween, San Francisco is a fun fall getaway. From annual festivals like Hardly Strictly Bluegrass to Fleet Week and the Folsom Street Fair, there’s a lot to love about the city at this time of year.

Additionally, the tourist crowds are fewer in busy areas like Fisherman’s Wharf, and it’s easier to get tickets for sell-out attractions like Alcatraz . If you want more ideas, my San Francisco itineraries can help.

If SF sounds like your kind of vacation spot, you can book a place to stay in San Francisco here . There are lots of good options, from waterfront hotels to apartments with views. I always enjoy staying at Hotel Triton . It’s in an ideal location by Union Square and I love the decor. You can book a room here .

San Francisco Fleet Week

3. Yosemite National Park

Next on my list of the best places to visit in California in fall is Yosemite National Park. I’ve loved visiting this place in the autumn months for a long time, and I’ve taken trips here in September, October, and November. From the beautiful weather to the sparse crowds, it’s a great time to be in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

There’s plenty you can do even if you only have 48 hours or a weekend in Yosemite in fall. From hikes like the Yosemite Valley Loop Trail and the famous Mist Trail to scenic drives and sightseeing, it’s easy to fill your time in the park. Waterfalls like Bridalveil Fall are fun to see from the valley floor, too.

If you have more time, you can check out my Yosemite itineraries for more ideas. From my guide to spending 3 days in Yosemite to my itinerary for 4 days in Yosemite , they have lots of options for things to do and see.

Half Dome view in Yosemite

If the weather is chilly, you can check out places like The Ansel Adams Gallery to see some of the most famous photos of Yosemite. The viewpoints at Tunnel View and Glacier Point are worth driving to as well. And that’s to say nothing of the famous chapel.

Yosemite is one of my top picks for places to visit in California at Thanksgiving , too. That’s because you can book Thanksgiving dinner at The Ahwahnee . This famous hotel is known for serving a holiday feast each year in its impressive Dining Room. Other options include a Thanksgiving buffet or special plated menu at Tenaya at Yosemite .

When it comes to accommodation in Yosemite, you can see options and book a place to stay here . If you want to save money, you can stay just outside the park gates. I’ve spent a night at Yosemite View Lodge and I loved its riverfront location and how close it was to the entrance. You can book a room here .

Yosemite Sequoia Tree

4. Central Coast in San Luis Obispo County

Another of my favorite fall destinations in California is San Luis Obispo County. From coastal spots like Avila Beach to inland areas like Paso Robles, there are plenty of exciting places to visit here during the harvest season.

Whether you’re a culture vulture, a wine enthusiast, or a lover of the coast, SLO County has something for every visitor in fall. If you love history and old Hollywood glamor, Hearst Castle is a must. If vineyards are your thing, there are great places to sip and savor in Paso. And if you love sun and sand, Pismo Beach is just the spot.

Which is to say nothing of the area’s local towns and cities. Cambria is a gem. From its delicious restaurants to its great shops and historic bars, there’s a lot to love here. If you want something bigger, downtown Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo are just the destinations for you.

Paso Robles vineyard table

There are fun things going on here in the fall, too. The leaves on the vineyards turn brilliant colors, the harvest makes it a great time to visit local wineries, and pumpkin patches, apple picking, and scarecrow festivals take place throughout the county. Events like the Whale Rock Music & Arts Festival, Harvest Wine Month, and Pioneer Day are fun as well.

If you want more ideas, my itinerary for a long weekend on the Central Coast has lots of inspiration for you. From where to eat to what to do, it will show you how to make the most of your time in this part of the Golden State.

If you need a place to stay while you’re visiting, I recommend the Inn at the Cove in Pismo Beach. I’ve had a great time calling this place home when I’m visiting the area. I love the decor of the rooms, the amazing Pacific Ocean views, and the sandy beach below the hotel. If you want to follow in my footsteps, you can book a room here .

Hearst Castle outdoor pool

5. Los Angeles

Los Angeles is next on my list of the best fall destinations in California. With mild weather, famous beaches, and excellent seasonal events and festivals, LA has a lot going for it as summer transitions into winter.

There’s plenty to get excited about in LA in fall. From Halloween pumpkin patches to Dia de Los Muertos celebrations, the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival in Chinatown, Cinespia cemetery movie screenings, fall foliage in Descanso Gardens, and Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to events.

If you want get outdoors, there are great hikes in Los Angeles County. From Portuguese Bend Reserve in Rancho Palos Verdes to San Vicente Mountain Park on Mulholland Drive, there are lots of options. They’re ideal to do as the weather cools, as hiking here can be much more pleasant in the fall than in the hot summer months.

Hollywood Boulevard signs

Beyond the outdoors, LA has cultural attractions like the Walt Disney Concert Hall, museums like The Broad and The Getty, and shopping streets like Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills and Abbot Kinney in Venice.

Add to that the cool shops and restaurants in Downtown LA, the Walk of Fame in Hollywood, the views from Griffith Observatory, and the world-class beaches, and you’ll have no problem filling your time here. My Los Angeles itineraries can help if you want more ideas.

If LA sounds like your kind of getaway, you can book a place to stay here . My favorite is the STILE Hotel Downtown Los Angeles . This boutique hotel is known for its central location, stylish restaurant, and buzzing rooftop bar. When I stayed, I loved its hip vibe and fun atmosphere. If you want to do the same, you can book a room here .

Pier on Manhattan Beach

6. Napa Valley

Napa Valley is one of my favorite places to go in Northern California in fall. This area numbers among the most beautiful destinations in the Golden State thanks to the changing leaves in its famous vineyards. I love coming here in harvest season because the scenery is stunning and the weather is cooler than in summer.

The majority of visitors come to Napa Valley in the fall for wine tasting tours , and for good reason. This part of Northern California’s wine country is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, and there are world-class wineries all throughout the area. Many host harvest dinners during the season, too.

There are other things to do in the region as well. From fine dining in Yountville (it’s home to famous restaurants like The French Laundry) to shopping in downtown Napa, hot air ballooning, and exploring Calistoga and St Helena, this place has a lot to offer. My Napa itineraries can show you more.

Napa winery terrace view

If you want to see fall foliage in Napa, try to time your trip for late October or November. You can see the best of it at vineyards along the Silverado Trail and Highway 29, in Yountville and Rutherford, on hikes in Bothe-Napa Valley State Park and along the Oat Hill Mine Trail, and while cycling the Napa Valley Vine Trail.

If a wine country getaway during the harvest season sounds good to you, you can book accommodation in Napa Valley here . My favorite place to stay in the area is Indian Springs . One of California’s original spas, this historic Calistoga resort is made up of an eclectic collection of bungalows, cottages, and Mission Revival-style buildings.

I’ve stayed in one of the cottages, and I loved its sense of history. The spa was relaxing, too. They make this one of the most unique places to stay in California . You can book a room here .

Napa Vineyard

7. Oak Glen

Oak Glen is another of the best fall destinations in California. If you’re looking for a place to see autumn leaves, this is one of the top spots in the whole of the Golden State. It’s an easy day trip from Los Angeles, too.

Oak Glen is a small agricultural community in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains. It’s composed of two valleys: Potato Canyon and Wilshire Creek Canyon. The area is 4,000 to 5,000 feet above sea level, ensuring it experiences four distinct seasons.

That includes a spectacular autumnal one. Visitors flock here during the fall to see the changing leaves, which offer some of the best opportunities to see colorful foliage in California.

A highlight is a drive along Oak Glen Road, a scenic loop that covers a distance of 20 miles. Oak Glen lies within a 5-mile section of the road. This stretch goes alongside apple farms, restaurants, shops, hiking trails, bakeries, cideries, cafes, and historical landmarks.

There are events taking place in Oak Glen throughout the harvest season, too. The Apple Butter Festival is a highlight of the fall here. There are also farms and orchards that offer pick-your-own apples and pumpkins, and press-your-own cider. Classic corn mazes and petting zoos round out the scene.

If all that sounds good, you can book a hotel near Oak Glen here . There are lots of options in and around the San Bernardino Mountains.

8. Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is one of my favorite places to visit in California in fall. My family had a place here when I was growing up, and I’ve spent a lot of time in this part of the Golden State.

The Sierra Nevada Mountains are popular for getting outdoors in the shoulder season, especially in September and October when the weather is still relatively warm during the day. If you want to see fall foliage, Hope Valley is just the spot. You can also see it on the Rainbow Trail, along Highway 50, at Fallen Leaf Lake, and in Emerald Bay State Park.

Later in the fall, early snowfall can make it a great place to hit the slopes on and around Thanksgiving weekend. Whether you go to Palisades, Heavenly, Northstar, Kirkwood, or elsewhere, there are lots of good options.

Emerald Bay, Tahoe view

Beyond the pistes, Lake Tahoe has a lot to offer visitors throughout the fall. From the restaurants and shops in Tahoe City to the lakefront scenery and relaxing spas, there’s something for everyone no matter the weather.

Some of the restaurants, hotels , and resorts around the lake offer special Thanksgiving feasts on the fourth Thursday in November as well. They’re fun ways to meet other travelers and get into the seasonal spirit.

If that sounds like your kind of place to get away, you can book accommodation in Tahoe here . My favorite place to stay at this time of year is The Village at Palisades Tahoe Hotel . It’s in a great location if you want to ski at the resort, and the village itself has an array of boutiques, shops, places to eat and drink, and seasonal entertainment. You can book a room here .

Tahoe City Shops

9. Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is another of my favorite fall destinations in California. This coastal city in Southern California is known for its sunny weather, beaches, shopping, and luxury hotels . There’s great food and wine here, too.

There’s a lot going on in Santa Barbara in fall. At Halloween there’s everything from the annual THRILLER flashmobs and family-friendly dance party to ghost tours, the Santa Barbara Halloween Bar Crawl, Boo at the Zoo, the Zombie Pub Crawl, and Fields of Funk.

Then comes Thanksgiving. From seasonal workshops to Thanksgiving wine tours, the events going on in and around the city will keep you entertained. On the actual day, there’s a Thanksgiving 4-Miler run and a Turkey Day Paddle on the water. The zoo is open, too.

Downtown Santa Barbara

If you’re visiting Santa Barbara for 2 days or more outside the big holidays, there’s still plenty to do. This is a year-round destination, and you can enjoy everything from the downtown and the coastal highlights to inland areas like the Santa Ynez Valley , the Santa Rita Hills, and the Santa Maria Valley.

The seafood restaurants on Stearns Wharf, the tasting rooms along the Urban Wine Trail, the delicious stalls in the Santa Barbara Public Market, the mission, the beaches, the murals in the Funk Zone, and the fun boutiques are just a few more of the highlights.

If this sounds like your kind of getaway, you can book a place to stay in Santa Barbara here . There are plenty of options throughout the city and surrounding county, from landmark hotels in Montecito to beachfront apartments and beyond. I love staying at El Encanto . This luxurious hilltop hotel is a real treat. You can book a room here .

Sta Rita Hills Vineyard

10. Big Bear

Big Bear is one of my top picks for places to visit in Southern California in fall. Located near Los Angeles in the San Bernardino Mountains, this destination is popular with travelers seeking classic fall foliage, activities like fishing, and snow-driven adventure sports.

Right on Big Bear Lake, most visitors come here in the fall for the leaves. They’re spectacular from mid-October to early November. From The Village itself to hikes like the Towne Trail, Castle Rock Trail, Aspen Grove Trail, and Pineknot Trail, there’s no shortage of places to take it all in. Bluff Lake Reserve is a great spot, too.

Later in the season, many visitors come here to ski at resorts like Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. They’re especially popular with families and beginners, as the slopes tend to be more gentle than in places like Mammoth and Tahoe.

Away from the foliage and pistes, there are plenty of popular activities to enjoy in Big Bear in fall. These include fishing, mountain biking, hiking, Segway tours, helicopter rides, ziplining, off-roading, and horseback riding. There’s even an Oktoberfest event each year.

If you want to stay inside and out of the cold, Big Bear has spas, yoga, and other wellness activities on offer. There’s fun dining and apres ski at the bars at the ski resorts and around Pine Knot Ave, too.

If that all sounds like your kind of vacation, you can book a place to stay in Big Bear here . My top pick is NP Boutique Lodge . The lodges and cabins here feature hip contemporary mountain design and rustic-chic decor. You can book one here .

11. Sonoma County

Sonoma County is another of my favorite fall destinations in California. I come here all the time, and I love how relaxed and beautiful it is in the harvest season. The weather is perfect, too.

Fall in Sonoma County is best known for wine tasting tours . My favorite places to go are Russian River for the Pinot Noirs and Dry Creek Valley for the Zinfandels. It’s hard to go wrong here at this time of year, though. There are harvest dinners at local wineries as well.

Sonoma has a lot to offer beyond wine in the fall, too. You can shop and dine in places like downtown Healdsburg and Sonoma Plaza, explore Jack London Historic State Park and Mission San Francisco Solano, or go to annual events like the Fall Wine Trail, Valley of the Moon Vintage Festival, Healdsburg Crush, and Oktoberfest at The Patch.

Sebastopol Tasting Room

If you want to see fall colors, head to Spring Lake Regional Park or hike the Bay Area Ridge Trail in North Sonoma Mountain Regional Park & Open Space Preserve. The vineyards in the area feature spectacular changing colors, too.

Over on the Pacific Ocean, the Sonoma Coast features beaches studded with iconic West Coast boulders and parks like Jenner Headlands Preserve, which features miles of hiking trails. The town of Bodega is famous for being a filming location for Alfred Hitchcock’s  The Birds as well. My Sonoma itineraries can give you more ideas for things to do.

If this sounds like your kind of escape, you can book a place to stay in Sonoma County here . There are lots of options, from wine country hotels to vacation rentals and charming inns. My favorite is the Grape Leaf Inn in Healdsburg. Right near the plaza, this B&B has pretty guest rooms, good atmosphere, and refreshingly reasonable rates for the area. You can book a room here .

Jenner Headlands Preserve Trail

12. Death Valley

Death Valley National Park is next on my list of the best places to visit in California in fall. This famous below-sea-level basin is a land of extremes, and it’s a popular autumnal travel destination.

The spot with the hottest recorded temperatures on Earth becomes a great place to travel as the scorching summer weather tapers off into cooler temperatures. By the end of fall it’s downright pleasant here.

Death Valley is a popular place with travelers who want to get outdoors. The moon-like landscapes and dramatic mountains feel otherworldly, and it’s a fun park to explore when the weather is mild and temperate.

There are plenty of famous spots to see in Death Valley. From Titus Canyon to the lowest point in North America at the salt flats in Badwater Basin, you’re spoiled for choice. And that’s to say nothing of hiking along Telescope Peak Trail and seeing Devil’s Golf Course and the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes.

Late fall is a great time to be here. The period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is the least crowded time of year in Death Valley, so it’s the perfect time to visit if you want to avoid the busy season.

If escaping to the desert as the weather cools appeals, you can book a place to stay in Death Valley here . There’s a variety of accommodation, from camping to hotels and lodges. My top pick is The Inn at Death Valley . Established in 1927, it’s located inside the national park and it has a spring-fed pool for guests to enjoy. You can book a room here .

13. Disneyland

In Orange County, Disneyland is next on my list of fall destinations in California. The Magic Kingdom and California Adventure are fun year-round, and harvest season can be a particularly good time to visit because crowds are fewer and temperatures are lower than in summer. Disneyland in early November is hard to beat.

The theme park steps things up at Halloween and in the run-up to the holiday season, too. Starting in early fall, the parks are decked out with pumpkins. From Downtown Disney to the Haunted Mansion, there are harvest displays and jack o’lanterns all around.

The festive period at Disneyland lasts from early November until early January, so there’s plenty of time to take in the holiday decorations and enjoy the celebrations, seasonal entertainment, and special events in late fall.

Disneyland Halloween decorations at the Haunted Mansion

The Disney Festival of Holidays at California Adventure starts in mid-November, and the Christmas Fantasy Parade at Disneyland kicks off in fall. That means there’s a lot to get excited about during the season. With special lights, Santa, fireworks, and more, this is a great time to visit Disneyland.

Both Disneyland and California Adventure are open on Thanksgiving Day, so you can even spend the official Turkey Day holiday celebrating with Mickey and friends.

If the theme park sounds like your kind of vacation, you can see a range of accommodation options and book here . My top pick for a place to stay at Disneyland in fall is the Disneyland Hotel . I’ve stayed here in November and I love how this classic property is so close to Downtown Disney and the entrances to Disneyland and California Adventure. You can book a room here .

Disneyland Jack O Lantern

14. Lassen Volcanic National Park

Lassen Volcanic National Park is a great place to visit in Northern California in fall. One of the most underrated places in the Golden State, it’s worth a visit for its steaming fumaroles, mountain lakes, and dramatic volcanoes. The weather is perfect for hiking at this time of year, too.

Visitors to Lassen Volcanic National Park can admire the bubbling mud pots of Bumpass Hell, see the lava rocks in the Devastated Area, take in the views from the top of Lassen Peak Volcano, and hike along trails through forested areas and around lakes.

Fall is a great time to be here because roads like Lassen National Park Highway and paths like Lassen Peak, Brokeoff Mountain, and the Bumpass Hell Trail are usually open through October (and sometimes November). They’re great places to explore before the snow starts in the winter.

View of Lassen Peak from Lake Almanor

If you like wildflowers, you can still see them in the first few weeks of fall. These beauties are at peak bloom in high elevation areas like Lassen Peak and Summit Lake between July and September.

While the park isn’t known for fall foliage, there are still a few places to see changing leaves here. Manzanita Lake, Hat Meadow, Devastated Area, and the valleys in the Southwest Area all feature fall colors.

If this sounds like your idea of a fun vacation, you can book a place to stay in Lassen Volcanic National Park here. From camping and hotels to cabins and lodges, there are plenty of options. My top pick is the Village at Childs Meadow . An ideal place to base yourself while you’re visiting, it has nice guest rooms featuring patios with views. You can book a room here .

15. San Diego

San Diego is another great fall destination in California. I’ve been coming here all my life, and I love its mix of sunny weather, surf culture, and great food.

San Diego is the ideal place for a California fall getaway if you love good weather and world-class beaches. From La Jolla to Del Mar and beyond, there are famous stretches of sand for surfing, sunbathing, swimming, and stand-up paddle boarding.

There’s more to this part of Southern California than beaches, though. You can take a harbor cruise , do a tour or a bar crawl in the Gaslamp Quarter, paraglide in Torrey Pines, eat delicious Mexican food in Pacific Beach, go whale watching to see Humpback, minke, and fin whales, and shop pretty much anywhere.

San Diego surfers

For culture vultures, visiting Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma, touring the USS Midway , and exploring institutions like the San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park are musts. And if you love zoos, the San Diego Zoo is world famous.

There’s a lot going on in San Diego during the fall, too. You can go to the annual Miramar Air Show, Pacific Beachfest, San Diego Beer Week, Fleet Week, Veterans Day events and parades, San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival, and the Encinitas Holiday Street Fair. On Thanksgiving there are Turkey Trots and feasts at places like the Hotel del Coronado .

If that all sounds good, you can book a place to stay in San Diego here . My favorite is the Andaz . This lifestyle boutique hotel in the historic Gaslamp Quarter is not only in a central location near the Balboa Theatre, but it also has a rooftop pool. When I stayed, I loved the decor, guest rooms, and atmosphere. You can book a room here .

16. Big Sur

Big Sur is next on my list of the best fall destinations in California. It’s one of the most exciting places to travel in the Golden State because the natural beauty here is unparalleled. The coastal scenery draws visitors from all over the world, and there are great hotels and restaurants in the area.

Whether you want to hike in Andrew Molera State Park, settle in for a sunset dinner at Post Ranch Inn or Nepenthe, photograph the iconic Bixby Bridge, take in the views of McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, surf the waves, walk through the redwoods, or soak up the scenery, there are lots of ways to spend your time on this part of the Central Coast in fall.

If you need more inspiration, you can take a look at my  Big Sur itinerary . It has all kinds of things to do and see along this iconic stretch of Highway 1. Just make sure to check for road closures before you plan your visit, as landslides can often cause damage on this part of the California coast.

Highway 1 in Big Sur, California

If you want to, you can extend your trip and combine it with a visit to some equally famous places nearby. My  Big Sur, Carmel, and Monterey itinerary  has lots of fall travel ideas for you. If you have more time, Santa Cruz and Capitola are just up the coast and they’re easy to get to as well.

There are fun things to do in Big Sur in fall, too. The crowds are thinner than in the peak summer months, and you can spot whales off the coast. You can see the monarch butterflies at Andrew Molera State Park in October as well.

If this sounds like your kind of place to get away to, you can  book accommodation in Big Sur here . Whether you want to go glamping, camping, or stay at a  hotel in Big Sur , there’s a range of options for every style and budget. I’ve stayed everywhere from Treebones Resort to Deetjen’s and Glen Oaks, and they’ve all been great.

Garrapata Beach in Big Sur, California

17. Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park is another of the best fall destinations in California. This otherworldly part of the Golden State is beautiful in September, October and November, and there’s no shortage of options for getting outdoors and into nature here this season.

There are lots of benefits to visiting Joshua Tree in fall. Chief among them is that the weather is more pleasant than in the hot summer season. Highs typically range from 70-85 degrees, and lows hover around 50.

There are plenty of things to see and do in Joshua Tree in fall as well. Hiking is one of the most popular activities here, and there’s a variety of trails to choose from. They include the Lost Palms Oasis Trail, the Mastodon Peak Loop Trail, and Ryan Mountain. They’re popular hikes, not to mention unique ways to discover Joshua Tree National Park.

You can also spot bighorn sheep on the Barker Dam Nature Trail, take a scenic drive along Geology Tour Road, and get a glimpse into the old west and the ruins of Wonderland Ranch on the Wall Street Mining Trail. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can ride horses, rock climb, or take a guided tour.

If that all sounds good, you can book accommodation in Joshua Tree here . My top pick for a spot to call home-away-from-home here is Sacred Sands . This beautiful hotel has great views, and it’s conveniently located near the West Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. If that appeals, you can book a room here .

You can also camp, but make sure to come prepared for chilly nights and mornings. Even when daytime temperatures are warm, Joshua Tree can get cold overnight. This is particularly true in the late fall.

18. Mammoth Lakes

Mammoth Lakes is another of the best places to visit in California in fall. This part of the Sierra Nevada is known for offering a wide variety of outdoor activities throughout the year. You can do all kinds of adventure sports while you’re vacationing here.

You can also visit the lakes in Mammoth (it’s in the name, after all). From Mono Lake to the bodies of water along the popular June Lake Loop, they show off the pristine natural beauty of the Eastern Sierra.

If you want to see fall colors in Mammoth and other parts of Mono County and Inyo County, you’re in luck. Rock Creek, Mammoth Lakes, the June Lake Loop, Lundy Canyon, Bridgeport, Sonora Pass, Walker, and Coleville are ideal places to see the autumn leaves at their finest.

Rainbow Falls, Mammoth

Leaves in Bishop Creek, Rock Creek, Virginia Lakes, and Green Creek usually turn color from mid-to-late September. Mammoth Lakes, McGee Creek, Bridgeport, Conway Summit, Sonora Pass, and Monitor Pass peak in late September. June Lake Loop, Lundy Canyon, Lee Vining Canyon, Convict Lake, and the West Walker River are at their best the first three weeks of October. Bishop goes strong into early November.

Beyond fall foliage, there’s a lot going on in Mammoth in fall. Not only are the summer crowds gone, but there’s great hiking and fishing. Add to that events like Bodie Ghost Walk Tours, the June Lake Jam Fest, the June Lake Autumn Beer Festival, and the Mammoth Lakes Turkey Trot at Thanksgiving, and there’s lots to love.

If that all appeals, you can book a hotel in Mammoth Lakes here . I’ve stayed at The Village Lodge at Mammoth , and I loved that it was located right in the heart of the area. If you want to do the same, you can book a room here .

Mammoth Village

Another of the best fall destinations in California is Julian. This 1870s gold country town in San Diego County is nestled in the Cuyamaca Mountains. It’s a great place to visit in the harvest season, as it’s known for seasonal foods and leaf-peeping.

Julian is a great place to go apple picking or tuck into a slice of fresh apple pie. The former is a popular activity between late August/early September and mid-October. The latter is one of the most delicious ways to experience the local produce in this part of California.

If you like fall colors, you can watch the leaves turn at Lake Cuyamaca in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park in early-to-mid November. You can also visit Palomar Mountain State Park or Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve, both of which are great places to get outdoors in the area.

Beyond the seasonal entertainment, Julian offers gold mine tours, museums, and art galleries. There are independent shops, restaurants, and cafes throughout the town, too.

You can also go on a hayride, climb a rock wall, or taste local cider, wine, and beer. If you’re into gold gush history, there are also self-guided historical walks you can do.

If that all sounds good, you can book a place to stay in Julian here . There’s a variety of options for accommodation, including historic hotels and inns. My top pick is the Julian Gold Rush Hotel , an 1890s national historic landmark with lots of historic charm. You can book a room here .

20. Halloween Hotspots

For a lot of people, fall is synonymous with Halloween. If you’re one of them, there are plenty of places you can go in California. From cities with famous celebrations to theme parks with great events and towns with pumpkin patches, the Golden State has you covered.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, Half Moon Bay is my top pick for places to get pumpkins. There are also great pumpkin patches everywhere from Sonora in Tuolumne County to Irvine and Salinas.

When it comes to theme parks, there’s everything from Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood to the Knott’s Berry Farm Halloween Haunt and Fright Fest at Six Flags Magic Mountain and Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo.

Pumpkin patch in Sonora

And that’s to say nothing of cities that love a good Halloween celebration. From big parties to trick-or-treating for kids, there’s a lot going on in Chico for Halloween. Highlights include ghost tours, haunted houses, concerts, family-friendly events, and Treat Street in downtown Chico.

In Sacramento , there are haunted houses, trick-or-treating, and pub crawls. In San Diego there are ghost tours , Brick-or-Treat at LEGOLAND, and more. In the Bay Area, there are haunted walking tours in San Jose. The famous Winchester Mystery House puts on spooky events for Halloween, too.

If you like decorations, Santa Cruz is hard to beat. Streets like Ocean View Avenue are packed with grand mansions built by wealthy Bay Area residents from bygone eras. The stretch between Broadway and Windham features front lawns with lots of Halloween decor.

Halloween Decorations in Santa Cruz

21. Nevada City & Grass Valley

Nevada City and Grass Valley are also great fall destinations in California. From colorful foliage to Gold Rush-era buildings and great natural surroundings, these places are hard to beat from mid-October to mid-November each year.

In Nevada City, Nevada Street features trees like old sugar maples and American sweetgums that show off their seasonal hues in fall. They were planted by gold miners in the middle of the 19th century, and they’re beautiful to behold in front of the road’s historic facades.

Another place that’s worth seeing is the Cascade Canal Trail, where you can see fall colors as you wander. Speaking of which, Empire Mine State Historic Park in Grass Valley has trails starting at the Gold Hill Drive Trailhead that show off the area’s autumn leaves.

If you’re visiting in September, Nevada City’s Constitution Day Weekend is the oldest and largest Constitution observance in the western United States. Festivities include a parade, a concert, and reenactments. Don’t miss the Gold Country Duck Race on Deer Creek, either.

If you’re into Halloween, you’re in luck. There’s trick-or-treating in downtown Nevada City, local ghost tours, and pop-up events that bring this part of the Golden State to life on and around October 31st. If you’re visiting over Thanksgiving weekend, you can enjoy local craft fairs, festivals, and celebrations.

If that all appeals, you can book accommodation in Nevada City here . There are plenty of options, including hotels, houses, cabins, and more. My top pick is Broad Street Inn . A family-owned guesthouse set in a 19th-century Victorian, it’s right in Nevada City’s historic district. You can book a room here .

As promised, I’ve created an interactive Google map of all the California fall travel destinations on my list. You can see it here . If you click on the pins, you can find more information and my relevant blog posts about each one.

Big Sur Redwood Trees

I hope you’ve enjoyed this guide to the best places to visit in California in fall, and that it’s inspired you to head out and explore more of the Golden State. There are lots of exciting destinations to discover, and harvest season is a great time to vacation here.

Beyond the places I mentioned, Lake Arrowhead, Lake Gregory, and Idyllwild are good places to see autumn leaves. Other fun spots to go in fall include Bass Lake, Apple Hill, and Temecula.

Fall in Southern California: Great Places to Visit

This article details the best places to visit during the fall in Southern California!

When it comes to the fall season, I am sure Southern California is not the place that comes to mind.

We do not have an abundance of colorful foliage, seasonal orchards, and chilly days.

But, make no mistake.  There are many places in Southern California that can give you a good dose of autumness.

The area has places where apples rule, vines give up their fruits, ancient traditions are celebrated and the desert welcomes you with its best weather.

Here are some incredible places to visit during the fall in Southern California.

Note: Southern California can be defined in different ways but for this article purposes we will consider the following counties: Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside, Imperial.

Table of Contents

Oak Glen is the quintessential fall escape for residents of Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside counties.  Families flock to the area, mostly during weekends, to eat all things related to apples, pick fruit, run around mazes, enjoy the foliage and listen to live music.

You can see the area by driving from farm to farm on the Oak Glen Road , a loop located against the San Bernardino National Forest.

Start the day by having apple pancakes at Apple Annie’s Restaurant .  On the bakery side of the establishment, you will find apple bread, apple empanadas, apple dumplings, the famous 5-pound apple pie , and other goodies.  Do not forget to stroll around Oak Tree Mountain .

Then, it is time to pick apples, pears, and pumpkins at one of the farms such as Snow-Line Orchard , Los Rios Rancho , Stone Pantry Orchard , Willowbrook Apple Farm , Heritage Orchard , or Rileys Farm .

If you are not interested in picking fruit, you can still visit the farms and take a look at their offerings.  They sell fruit, fall vegetables, apple cider donuts, honey, jams, jellies, and all sorts of gourmet products for sale.

Also, some of these farms have pumpkin patches, corn mazes, petting zoos, horseback rides, wagon rides, and opportunities to press your own cider.  And, talking about cider, do not forget to visit the Oak Glen Cider Company .  Or, be ready to stop when you see signs saying “apple cider sold here.”

If you want to stretch your legs (or burn calories after eating so much), stop by the Oak Glen Preserve or Wildwood Canyon State Park .

Julian – Fall in Southern California

Julian is one of my favorite small towns in California.  I am not kidding when I say that I dream about this place.  Why?  It is all about the pie.  And, I am talking about apple pie!

Yes, the apple pie is reason enough to drive to this town nestled on the mountains of San Diego County.  I am not even a pie person but I am crazy about the offerings in the town.  The pastry is buttery and flaky and the filling has the right balance of sweet and tart.

There are many pie flavors such as classic apple, dutch apple pie (my favorite), apple berry, apple cherry, apple peach, pecan, cherry, rhubarb, and blueberry.  You can order a slice (or buy the whole thing) and have it with cinnamon ice cream and even melted cheddar cheese.

Things to do in Julian, San Diego, California, Apple

You can find the delicious pies at the Julian Pie Company , Mom’s Pies , and Apple Alley Bakery .  I have tried them all and they are all good.  Of course, there are way more apple-related goods for you to pig out to your heart’s content.  I bet you to try as many things as possible.  Do not forget to try the cider at the town’s cider house .

Between eating pie, you can visit the Pioneer Museum , Eagle Mountain Mining Company , Volcan Valley Apple Farm , and Apple Starr Orchard .  Adult libations can be found at the Menghini Winery , Volcan Mountain Winery , Julian Beer Company , and Nickel Beer Company .  There are additional wineries, cideries, and taprooms at nearby Winola Junction .

You can extend your stay by including outdoor paradises such as the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve , William Heise County Park , Lake Cuyamaca , and Cuyamaca Rancho State Park .

Apple pie signs, Julian, California

If we are talking about fall, I cannot leave out the city called “Pumpkin” in Spanish (calabaza means pumpkin or squash).

Leaving the name aside, I am including the city on the list because it hosts a big fall festival (October) and can be used as a base to explore the Santa Monica Mountains . That’s right, fall is a great time to hike because of the mild temperatures.

For example, you can head to the historic King Gillette Ranch (yes, it was owned by one of the razor company owners), a park featuring a Spanish revival mansion, pond, creek, terraces, bridges, and hiking trails ( Gillett Ranch Loop , Gillett Ranch Summit to Inspiration Point , Las Virgenes View ).

In the vicinity, you can visit the Malibu Creek State Park , a place used to film several movies and TV shows.  The park offer camping, hiking, picnicking and fishing opportunities.

southern california fall trips

North of Calabasas, there are more hiking trails at the Chesebro and Palo Comado Canyon and Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve .

A more serene setting is waiting for you at the Malibu Hindu Templ e, a marvelous set of structures dedicated to the Hindu god Venkateswara.

Also, you can access scenic Mulholland Highway from the King Gillette Ranch area.

Take a break from all the activity by visiting one of the shopping centers along Calabasas Road ( El Camino Shopping Center, The Commons, Parkway Calabasas ).   Consider eating at restaurants such as Pedales Fork , Sagebrush Cantina , or Lovi’s Delicatessen .  If you have time, pay a visit to the Leonis Adobe , one of the oldest buildings in Los Angeles.

Botanical Gardens

Southern California may not be big on fall colors but that doesn’t mean that we do not have reds, oranges, and yellows at all.

One way to find pretty fall displays is by heading to your nearest botanical garden.  There are always flowers blooming and non-native species will show their best autumn hues.

Check out one of the following gardens in the areas:

  • Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens
  • Ventura Botanical Gardens
  • South Coast Botanical Gardens (Palos Verdes)
  • Los Angeles County Arboretum (Arcadia)
  • Descanso Gardens (La Cañada Flintridge)
  • The Huntington Library
  • Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (Claremont)
  • Niguel Botanical Preserve
  • Fullerton Arboretum
  • San Diego Botanical Garden (Encinitas)
  • UC Riverside Botanic Gardens

Old Town San Diego

Big Bear – Fall in Southern California

Gorgeous Big Bear Lake is one of Southern California’s most popular mountain escapes.  This is an all-season resort ideal for all sorts of groups.

The cool thing is that you can see some fall colors in the area.  You can do this by driving around the lake and stopping at all the main viewpoints (Boulder Bay Park, Grout Bay Recreation Ares, North Shore Recreation Area, Juniper Point).  I also recommend taking a ride aboard the Miss Liberty Paddlewheel or Time Bandit Pirate Ship .  Those rides are so fun and the views are phenomenal.

Another way to see the forest surrounding the lake is on foot or bike.  The following trails are considered easy:

  • Alpine Pedal Path (2.5 miles, one way)
  • Woodland Interpretative Trail (1.5 miles, loop)
  • Towne Trail (2.5 miles, loop)
  • Champion Lodgepole Trai l (0.6 miles, one way)

southern california fall trips

Of course, the Castle Rock Trail is the most popular in the area.  This 2.4 miles, round trip hike is considered intermediate to difficult.  However, the top of Castle Rock (the end goal) affords panoramic views of the lake and surroundings.  Every drop of sweat is worth the effort!

Big Bear hosts a huge Oktoberfest Celebration . Festivities include German bands, DJs, tons of sausage varieties, strudel, German dumplings, dance groups, contests, costumes, children activities, and copious amounts of beer (wine too).

In town, make sure to have a great meal at places like Fire Rock , Copper Q , The Old German Deli , and Amangela’s .  I completely adore the food served at Himalayan .

Lake Arrowhead

Big Bear seems to get all the attention while Lake Arrowhead stays as a “day trip from Big Bear.”

However, it is hard to compete with Lake Arrowhead’s raw beauty.  Everything about this place is gorgeous!

To start with, the Arrowhead Village has several buildings with a half-timbered/Bavarian architectural style.  Those give the area a unique European air.  Keep getting into the mood by having breakfast at Belgium Waffle Works .

Explore the lake by walking the North Shore or South Shore Trails .  This will allow you to explore the different bays in the lake and other smaller lakes (Papoose Lake, Grass Valley).

For other hikes, you will have to drive a bit away from the lake.  Here are some recommendations:

  • Heaps Peak Arboretum Trail (0.7-mile loop, easy)
  • Seeley Creek Trail (1 mile, easy)
  • Exploration Trail (4.5 miles, one way, moderate)

southern california fall trips

Nearby Lake Gregory (another beautiful lake in the area), offers 2.5 miles, easy nature loop.

Lake Arrowhead can be explored aboard the Arrowhead Queen , a paddle wheeler offering 45-minute tours.  Animal lovers should head to Wildhaven Ranch , a wildlife sanctuary that rehabilitates injured bears, raccoons, mountain lions, and birds.

For a delicious meal, make sure to check Cedar Glen Malt Shop , Papagayos , and Hortencias (a Mexican restaurant in a stunning location).

Keep in mind you are very close to the Rim of the World Scenic Byway , a road connecting the major towns in the San Bernardino National Forest .

Lake Arrowhead, San Bernardino, California, Los Angeles

Idyllwild – Fall in Southern California

It is time to move from the San Bernardino National Forest to the San Jacinto Mountains.  In there, you will find the Idyllwild, a small town ideal for those who want to escape the big cities.

Most activities around here involve chilling out in a cabin, walking around town, and hiking.  Seems like the most family-friendly (meaning easier) trails are the Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail (2.6 miles, one way) and Deer Springs Trail (3.3 miles, one way). Do your research before heading to a trail since some require a permit and others go through tribal land.

Another option is to visit the Idyllwild Nature Center and explore its 4.5 miles of easy trails, picnic spots, and educational displays.

Lake Hemet , another hiking and fishing paradise is located within close distance.  Lake Fulmor Day Use Area is located to the north.

Dining recommendations include Mile High Cafe , Cafe Aroma, and Higher Grounds .  Make room on your schedule to visit the Middle Ridge Winery Tasting Gallery .

southern california fall trips

Palm Springs

It makes total sense to jump from Idyllwild to Palm Springs since the San Jacinto Mountains are located “behind” the city and are one of the mountain ranges that form the Coachella Valley.

Palm Springs is a superb fall getaway because the weather is at its best during this time of the year.  It is not infernally hot or chilly.  Plus, you do not have the high winds of spring.

So, pack your luggage and head to this desert oasis.  By the way, the entire Coachella Valley is wonderful during fall.

There is a lot to do in Palm Springs.  It is a place that never gets old.

If you want to eat, drink and shop, stop by Downtown (or Downtown Palm Desert ).  That is the happening place to be and there are plenty of cool places (cafes, patios, rooftops) to spend some time.

Trio Restaurants, Uptown Design District

If you are into architecture and design, check out the shops located Uptown , do a self-guided Modernist tour or book a specialized tour.

Outdoor types have plenty of options.  You can hike at the Indian Canyons , Coachella Valley Preserve or Tahquitz Canyon (there is a waterfall at the end of the canyon).  Organized tours can take you to hard to reach spots and to the notorious San Andreas Fault .

Those who are chasing fall colors may observe some at the upper station of the Palm Springs Tramway .  Even if the leaves are not changing, the views of the valley floor from the top are incredible.

Planning for day trips is a fascinating option too.  You will have problems deciding among Joshua Tree National Park , Big Morongo Preserve , Whitewater Reserve, and the Salton Sea .

And, whatever you do, do not miss trying a date shake .  They are sold in many places but my favorite version is sold at the Shield Dates Garden in Indio .

Day Trips from Palm Springs

Coachella Valley Preserve

Antelope Valley

The Antelope Valley is located in the northern, desertic area of Los Angeles County.  The main population centers are Palmdale and Lancaster.

The area does not seem to get a lot of attention.  I do not understand why since it has a lot to offer.  As a matter of fact, Downtown Lancaster is a California Cultural District.  In that part of the city, you will find tons of colorful murals, an art museum, historic buildings, and restaurants serving delicious food.

The Valley has (or it is close) to three sub-AVAs (American Viticultural Areas): Sierra Pelona, Leona Valley, and Antelope Valley of the High Desert.  Therefore, there are several wine tasting rooms in Lancaster and around Agua Dulce.

Hikers can visit the Saddleback Butte State Park , Devil’s Punchbowl County Park , Prime Desert Woodland Preserve , or the Indian Museum State Historic Park .

For fruit picking, go to Brian Ranch Airport U-Pick Orchard.   They sell products made on-site, have a pumpkin patch, and even offer ultralight airplane flights.

Santa Ynez Valley

The Santa Ynez Valley is located about 30 miles north of Santa Barbara.  You may not be aware but the valley is one of the premier wine regions in California.

And, yes, fall is harvest time and you can expect the vine leaves to change colors.  Many turn into hues of yellow and crimson.  Entire fields seem to get “on fire.”

There is a lot to do in this area.  I have been going for years and it is impossible to get bored.  On the east side of the valley, you will find the towns of Solvang (California’s Little Denmark), Santa Ynez, Buellton, and Los Olivos.  All these towns have wine tasting rooms but Los Olivos revolves almost 100% around wine.  With about 30 tasting rooms in town,  this is the place for die-hard wine fans.

In the west part of the valley, you will find the towns of Lompoc and Los Alamos.  These two cannot be more different.  Lompoc is kind of the most developed town in the area.  Los Alamos is a row of buildings in the middle of nowhere.

But, Lompoc has a place called the Wine Ghetto .  There are over a dozen tasting rooms in an industrial setting.

Scattered around the Valley, you have many estates and vineyards open to the public.  Popular tasting routes include the Santa Rita Hills and Foxen Canyon Trail .

Driving between places, you will have the opportunity to appreciate the landscape.  If you want to get deeper into the area, make sure to read my article about the backroads of the Santa Ynez Valley .

I recommend having breakfast in Solvang ( Paula’s Pancake House , Solvang Restaurant ) or Buellton ( Ellen’s Pancake House , Pattibakes ).  Or, opt for having something light at one of the town’s Danish bakeries .

With a full belly, stroll around town and go crazy taking pictures.  You can start wine tasting once the clock says it is 11:00 a.m.  You can do this in Solvang or move to Los Olivos. To reach Los Olivos from Solvang, you will have to drive through Alamo Pintado Road .  There are excellent tasting rooms on that road too.

On another day, explore Buellton or Lompoc  Going to an actual vineyard is recommended since it is just a different vibe.  And, whatever you choose to do, do not miss having a meal at Industrial Eats .

Temecula – Fall in Southern California

Temecula is located in Riverside County, about 90 miles from Los Angeles.  Therefore, it is a popular weekend getaway for those living in the big city.

Because of that, it is a good idea to visit during the week or avoid the most popular wineries during the weekends.  There are plenty of small/mid-size tasting rooms offering yummy wines in gorgeous settings.

As mentioned, fall is grape harvest time.  As a consequence, the season is jam-packed with activities and special events.

Start your day by visiting Old Town .  Front Street is brimming with restaurants, shops, and cafes.  Standouts include Penfold’s , Public House , Crush & Brew, and Devilicious Eatery .  Foodies should not miss the Temecula Olive Oil Company , House of Jerky, and Temecula Valley Cheese Company .

If you are around on a Saturday, do not miss the morning farmers market in Old Town.

southern california fall trips

For wine tasting, you are spoiled for choice.  Wineries are located east of town mainly along Rancho California and De Portola Roads .

Wilson Creek (try the Almond Champagne), Callaway , Europe Village , Ponte, and Miramonte are some of the most popular tasting rooms. Churon is located inside a building built to resemble a French chateau.  Oak Mountain offers great views of the surrounding area and tasting in a wine cave.  Fazeli is another place I like a lot.

If you want to stay in wine country, Carter State , South Coast Winery , and Europe Village offer stunning lodging options.  You can stay at a vacation rental too.

If somebody in your party is not a big fan of wine, Temecula has awesome options when it comes to beer.  There are more than 10 breweries in the area.  Some to visit are Aftershock , Refuge , Garage , Ironfire and Electric .

For cocktails, visit the Kalifornia Distillery or Galway Spirits .

San Diego’s Wine Country

I have yet another wine country suggestion.

If I mention the Santa Ynez Valley and Temecula, I have to mention San Diego’s Wine Country too.  I am sure a lot of people do not even know such a place like this exists in San Diego.

Well, this idyllic place is centered around Escondido , a city located about 30 miles from Downtown San Diego.

Orfila , Cordiano , Espinosa , Altiplano, and Rancho Guejito are acclaimed for their wines (and beautiful properties).

Keep in mind the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is located nearby.  Other outdoor activities can be practiced at the Elfin Forest Recreational Preserve , Lake Poway, and Mount Woodson .

southern california fall trips

San Diego has more beer than wine fame.  Those who want to explore this side of the area will find plenty of breweries in Escondido and next-door neighbor San Marcos.

Another wine area to visit in San Diego is the Ramona Valley .  This rural area is full of rolling hills, green pastures, and farmland.  It is not that developed or well-known but it is definitely a hit for those who are looking for quietness and a more intimate experience when it comes to tasting wines.

Around Ramona, you have options such as Turtle Rock Ridge , Pamo Valley , Chuparosa, and La Finquita .

Julian is not that far from Ramona. So, you can have two fall getaways in one.  If you do not have time to make it to Julian, Santa Ysabel is home to a branch of the Julian Pie Company .

When it comes to Southern California fall getaways, we cannot leave Ojai from the list.

In this article, I have highlighted mountain and wine-related getaways.  Well, Ojai is a mix of those two elements.  There are a lot of places to wine taste.  Plus, there is easy access to many trails in the Los Angeles National Forest.

The charming town has nice places to check out such as Bart’s Books , Treasures of Ojai , Porch Gallery , Rainbow Bridge Natural Food, and Libbey Park .  You can walk to the Ojai Vineyard Tasting Room , Majestic Oak Vineyard, and Casa Barranca .

Outside town, I recommend visiting the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts , Boccali’s Pizza & Pasta (has a pumpkin patch during fall), Ojai Valley Olive Oil Company, and Old Creek Ranch & Winery .

southern california fall trips

Drive past Boccali’s to reach a scenic point from where the Ojai Valley is seen.  A lot of people go to the Meditation Mount to see the town’s famous pink sunsets.

When it comes to hiking, one option is to get to know the lands protected by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy .  Preserves include:

  • Valley View – Located Downtown, it has popular trails like Foxen Canyon.
  • Ojai Meadows,
  • Ventura River
  •  Cluff Vista Park

Another option is to hike Shelf Road , a 3.5 miles, flat trail bordering the southern part of the Valley View Preserve.

Or, head to Los Padres National Forest .  Here are some recommended trails:

  • Piedra Blanca
  • Rose Valley Falls – 12 miles from Ojai, 0.5 miles, one way
  • Agua Blanca
  • North Matillija

If you want to relax, book a hiking and wine tasting tour with Trails by Potter or an off-road adventure with Cloud Climbers Jeep Tours .

San Diego for Dia de Los Muertos

Even though Halloween is fall’s most popular festivity, I have never been fond of it.  However, my Latin side loves the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) celebrations.

If you cannot fly to Oaxaca City or Patzcuaro to celebrate, Old Town San Diego is a great option.  The entire area transforms to honor the ones that are no longer with us.  Activities include altar viewing, live mariachi music, face painting, plays, dancers, costume contests, parades, stilt walkers, and food stations.

In the county, Dia de Muertos activities take place in Sherman Heights, North Park, Encinitas, Oceanside, and Rancho Guajome.

To get spooky vibes, tour the Cosmopolitan Hotel (Old Town) or Whaley House .

There are thousands, if not millions, of things to do in California. The Golden State, with an area of 163, 696 square miles, truly has it all: beaches, forests, deserts, waterfalls, lakes, rivers, mountains, valleys, vineyards and beds of flowers. Given the facts, how to start planning a trip? Do not worry my friends! I have collected the best things to do in California from experienced traveler. In this article, you will find some of the most exciting activities to do in the state. Get ready since this is going to be a fun ride! Things to Do in California - Northern California There are always going to be differing opinions on how to divide California. For this article’s purpose, we are assuming the northern 48 counties of the state compose Northern California. Drive Around the Redwoods By Pamela Iorg from Travel Hacking Mom One of the biggest tourist draws to the Northern part of California is the magnificent Redwood Trees the area is known for. One of the best places to see them is driving through the Avenue of the Giants. It is a 31-mile section of highway 101 that starts near Phillipsville, California in the south and ends at Stafford in the north end. If you stop at the entrance to Avenue of the Giants, you can pick up a brochure that will tell you about different places to stop and safely view the trees. This two-lane road winds through Redwood National Park, with the Eel River at its side. It will be impossible to keep your eyes on the road while gaping at these awe-inspiring trees. Plan to pull off and enjoy them outside of your car. You can even drive through a huge tree near Myers Flat. The Drive-Through Tree will cost about $8 to go through but is totally worth it – when else will you have the experience of actually driving through a huge Redwood tree? Lady Bird Grove (named after Lady Bird Johnson) is a great place to stop and wander through the Redwoods. It can be a quiet, majestic, and almost spiritual experience. The sheer beauty of these giant trees and the gorgeous scenery that surrounds them will be something you will long remember! Road Trip to Mendocino from SF By Aswani from A Charming Escape Mendocino is a coastal town in Northern California about 3 hours from San Francisco. It is a charming little town with cliffside trails, quiet beaches, ocean view hotels and is perfect for a weekend road trip from SF. The most popular places to stay near Mendocino are Heritage House Resort, Sweetwater Inn and the Stanford Inn but there are also many cute B&Bs. The best and fastest route to get to Mendocino is through Highway 101 and Highway 128 via Sonoma wine country and the redwood forests. Stop at the town of Healdsburg for a quick breakfast. Stroll through downtown before heading into the winding Hwy 128 surrounded by majestic redwood trees. Another great stop on the way to Mendocino is the underrated wine region of Anderson Valley between Boonville and the town of Navarro. This region is home to some of California’s best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wineries. Our favorite wineries in the Anderson Valley are Roederer Estate, Navarro Vineyards, Brutacao Cellars, and Phillips Hill Estates. Once you arrive in Mendocino, hike one of the beautiful trails in Mendocino Headlands State Park for an amazing sunset. Spend the next day exploring the coastal trails and visit the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. It has an impressive collection of camellias, roses, dahlias, magnolias, and many more plants. Catch Firefall in Yosemite National Park By Becky from Bonjour Becky For a few weeks each February, Yosemite's Horsetail Falls becomes Firefall — a stream of red-hot lava glowing in the setting sun. It's every photographer's and sightseer's dream. The phenomenon begins around Valentine's Day every year —exact dates vary— and happens every sunset until March, weather permitting. Plan to stay near Yosemite at least two nights to increase your chance of catching it. The closest parking is a mile away from Firefall, so arrive in Yosemite Valley early and plan to walk a mile along the road to the best viewing spots. You'll be rewarded with jaw-dropping views of "lava" plunging 3,600 feet down the face of El Capitan. (Bonus: bring a thermos of hot cocoa and some blankets for an extra-cozy evening.) Firefall is a great excuse for a winter trip to Yosemite, which offers year-round hiking and epic views. Snowshoe through a winter wonderland, gaze out at the iconic Tunnel View or go ice skating with views of Half Dome before you head to Firefall in the evening. Once you've seen it, Firefall will burn bright in your memory forever. Lake Tahoe, nestled in the range of Sierra Nevada, is renowned for its breathtaking views and blue water - a sight that you won’t be able to get enough of. While many people visit to hit the slopes, many also like to go to reconnect with nature and enjoy the beautiful scenery. You can go on hikes, enjoy the scenic drive along the lake, or simply relax in the cabin with a good book. If you want to find the best views in Lake Tahoe – though the view is amazing no matter where you go – head to Emerald Bay where you can spot the tiny island Fannette Island. There is no better way to experience this magical place than by staying at a cozy cabin by the lake! Photo by Diana Read More: Lake Tahoe in Pictures Taking the boat to Alcatraz Island By Jo From Discover Discomfort Alcatraz Island (known colloquially as “The Rock”) is just off the coast of San Francisco Bay and is a must-visit if you’re in Northern California. It’s very popular and tickets usually sell out months in advance, so make a reservation well ahead — especially for weekends. Alcatraz Island was turned into a prison in 1934. While it was in operation it was home to the most notorious criminals at the time, including Al Capone, and “Bird Man” Robert Stroud. The conditions of the island — its freezing temperature, turbulent waves and sharp cliffs — made the prison well known for being impossible to escape from… unless you believe the legends! You take a 20-minute tour ferry to the island and then can explore freely, but I’d also recommend the 40-minute audio tour. This audio tour was hands-down one of the most engaging ones I’ve ever experienced. The narration and the dramatic reenactments gives you a glimpse into what life must have been like for the prisoners. You can even take a night tour if you’re looking for an extra spooky vibe. Read More: San Francisco Itinerary: 1, 2 or 3 Days in the City Walk Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower By Rachel from Rachel Ruminations The hills are what make San Francisco a particularly beautiful town: the views of the sea or the bay, the sight of those long, straight downhills that filmmakers so enjoy for chase scenes. Topped by art-deco Coit Tower, Telegraph Hill is a particular joy to climb on a free afternoon. Starting from Washington Square Park, the walk up is pretty, but steep. You will be rewarded by the phenomenal view of the city at Coit Tower’s base, and you can see an even better view if you take the elevator to the top. Make sure to check out the Depression-era murals on the inside of the tower’s ground floor even if you don’t go up. The walk downhill is even prettier than the walk up, if that’s possible. The long Filbert Street steps lead all the way down to sea level near Fishermen’s Wharf, where you’ll undoubtedly meet the tourist throngs. Take your time on the steps, though, and enjoy the lush Grace Marchant Garden and the narrow “streets” leading off on either side. I recommend this for three main reasons: you’ll see amazing views of the San Francisco bay, work off some calories (psst - Japantown has some pretty great restaurants!), and you can explore other cities. There are plenty of places to rent a bike, but I recommend picking a company in the Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood since it’s closest to the Bridge. The 20-minute bike ride over to the starting point will take you through some fairly flat streets, and you can stop near Crissy Field if you’d like to take a few photos of the waterfront. When biking across the Golden Gate Bridge, it’s important to note that there are two sidewalks: one is for pedestrians, and the other is for bikers. If you don’t know which one to take, just take a look at where everyone else is going or ask one of the employees at the concession stand. If you’re flexible on timing, you can bike all the way across the bridge and explore the neighboring town of Tiburon. This cozy little town is famous for its quirky boutiques, grassy parks, and scenic waterfront. If you plan to make the trip to Tiburon, ask the bike rental employee for a bicycle lock, as there are plenty of bicycle “parking” near the waterfront. The tour will take you to four different wineries with a stop for lunch. At one of the wineries you will be served a picnic lunch catered by The Girl and The Fig, one of the best restaurants in Sonoma. Once you have visited all four wineries the tour will drop you back off at Sonoma Plaza where you will have your pick of places to have dinner before turning in for the night. Whether it is your first time visiting Sonoma or you’re looking for a new way to experience Sonoma, the Sonoma Wine Trolley is a truly unique and fun experience. Photo by Taima Taste Craft Beer at the Russian River Brewery By Derek from Robe Trotting Napa and Sonoma valleys are rightly world-renowned for the vineyards, but one of my favorite stops in Sonoma valley was actually one of the best craft breweries in the world. Russian River Brewing Company has become world-famous for its Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger IPAs, hailed by many aficionados as the best beers in the world (Pliny the Younger is brewed once a year and is an especially hot ticket to enjoy). But they offer more than just IPAs, as their sours (named Consecration, Supplication, and Temptation) are world-class. Russian River now offers two locations in Sonoma Valley, including their original taproom in Santa Rosa and a new brewery and brewpub in Windsor. The Santa Rosa location can get packed in evenings, but they offer excellent pizzas and wings to pair with the beers. The Windsor location has a little less traffic and offers a broader menu, plus you can take a tour of their brewery. The farm has a variety of animals including chickens, a donkey, guardian llamas, Anatolian shepards, and of course, goats. All of the animals on the farm are working animals, the goats, in particular, provide milk for goat cheese. The farm’s dairy produces a variety of award-winning goat cheeses ranging from plain to cranberry walnut and garden chive, and more. The cheeses alone are well worth the visit! The best thing about visiting Harley Goat Farms is their baby goats. Take a farm tour during the spring months after the baby goats, or “kids” as they’re called, are born. Then, you’ll be able to see and hold a baby goat! The farm tour is also super informative and you’ll learn a lot about how to hold a baby goat, the farm’s operations, animals, and their cheese. The highlight of it all are definitely the baby goats, they are too cute! Stop by a Hot Spring By Athul from Our Backpack Tales Surrounded by the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Glass Mountain Ridge in California is the Crowley Hot Springs also known as Wild Willy's Hot Springs. You can reach the trail close to US 395 by taking the Benton Crossing Road. The Crowley Hot Springs are open 24 hours a day and it is absolutely free. From the parking lot, you can see an elevated wooden walkway. A short walk of around 0.32 km through the beautiful backdrop of mountains is an amazing experience. The walkway slopes slightly downward and ends almost abruptly by the pools. It is about 10 feet wide and 3 feet deep, and you can easily take a dip in it! This hot spring contains one small and one large pool. The temperature in these pools can vary from 95 to 105 degrees. The bigger pool can accommodate a dozen of people but the small pool can accommodate some. The area surrounding the pool is stunning with mountains and grasslands in the backdrop. There are few option for camping in the surrounding area. These hot springs are in a fragile ecosystem so all should follow leave no trace behind policy to keep them clean. Things to Do in California - Central California Here are some of the things you can do around California’s Central area. If you ask me, this is one of the most thrilling parts of the state. Drive Around Big Sur By Dhara from It's Not About the Miles Driving the Big Sur stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway between Carmel and Ragged Point should be high on your list of things to do in California. Considered one of the most scenic coastlines on the planet, the drive gives you the opportunity to enjoy magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean and the rugged Central California coastline. Just a little over 75 miles in length, Highway One hugs the water for most of this route. Where it does not, for short stretches, you will drive through towering redwoods or bucolic countryside. There are numerous pullouts where you can park and enjoy the views at leisure, and take lots of photos. Some of the best places to stop on the Big Sur Coast drive include Point Lobos State park, just south of the quaint village of Carmel-by-the-Sea, the very wild Garrapata State Park, with hiking trails if you want to stretch your legs, and the historic Bixby Creek Bridge, considered an engineering marvel. Drive the road in late spring after the rains are over, and you will see gorgeous wildflowers along the road. The hills are green at this time as well, and look gorgeous against the blue of the ocean. Ride a Buggy at the Oceano Dunes By Sharon from Daily Dream 360 If you are looking for a little adventure on the beach, you may want to consider a dune buggy ride at Oceano Dunes State Park, which is located 3 miles from Pismo Beach. This activity is a great add-on when visiting the San Luis Obispo region of California. You will find plenty of Dune Buggy rental companies just outside the state park entrance. Once you complete a vehicle orientation, you'll be driven to the site within the state park and get set up with your vehicles. Your tour operator will offer directions, a map and will guide you to the area where you are allowed to drive your buggy. The park has a designated area for off-road vehicles and several restrictions with regards to speed. What I loved about the Dune Buggy ride was that I was able to choose my level of thrill. Some of the Sand Dunes were very high, and there was a high risk from coming down from a dune and getting stuck before moving back up another. For thrill-seekers, there is plenty of challenging dunes to conquer. For those less adventurous, there were some smaller hills and the very scenic ride along the ocean. Road Cycle in Santa Barbara County By Clare from Epic Road Rides If you fancy a spot of road cycling, Santa Barbara County in southern California, is a fantastic place to do it. It's a beautiful region that’s warm and sunny for much of the year. Winters tend to be short and mild. Head to the Santa Ynez valley and you’ll find quiet rolling roads that take you through gorgeous vineyards and pretty ranches with wide open fields dotted with well-groomed horses. In the village of Solvang, you’ll find an excellent bike shop that can fit you out with everything you need (you can rent too) and set you off to explore the countryside. There are around 120 wineries in this area, clustered around the pretty towns and villages of Solvang, Los Olivos and Santa Ynez. Many cyclists take the opportunity to combine cycling with a wine tour as many of the wineries open their doors to people who want to come and learn about wine and enjoy some wine tasting. Exploring by bike is the best way to really get to know a region, and I highly recommend the Santa Ynez Valley! In the summertime, the ski lifts at Snow Summit are transformed into mountain bike lifts, taking you up to an elevation of 8,000 feet and dropping you into the coolest downhill bike park in Southern California. Snow Summit has around 18 miles of mountain bike trails, including trails for the beginner all the way to the most advanced riders. The beginner level trail “Going Green” is the longest in the park at 2.5 miles, and is the most basic of all. It’s a great idea to start with this trail to get warmed up! The blue-rated trails are the most fun; this is where you can really let loose and sharpen your skills. The trails rated as black diamond are the most difficult trails in the park. You will find built-in features like jumps and berms, but most of the time you can bypass those features if you are not up for the challenge. Get some practice in at the Base Area to improve your skills before attempting those difficult trails! Day or season passes are available and the park is open to all – kids and adults! Photo by Heather Read More: Big Bear Weekend Guide Dive the Channel Islands By James from Travel Collecting One of the top things to do in California is to dive the Channel Islands. There are eight Channel Islands off the coast of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Five of them make up the Channel Islands National Park. The largest, Catalina Island, has places to stay and shore dives as well as boat dives are available. However, you can take day trips straight from just north of LA (Ventura Harbor) to Anacapa Island and just south of LA (San Pedro) to dive sites around Catalina. Dive boats also leave from Santa Barbra to the northern islands, though these are further offshore. The main attraction is diving the Californian giant kelp forests. Kelp stretches from the sea bed up more than forty feet to the surface, creating a magical forest to swim through. Winding your way through a thick screen of golden kelp is an incredible experience. The kelp is home to cheeky seals and sea lions that zoom out of nowhere and right up to your mask, as well as bright orange garibaldi fish. This was one of my favorite dives from the many I have done around the world. It also makes a nice contrast to the other more urban things you can do in Los Angeles. Hike to the Hollywood Sign By Caroline from Pictures and Words Few things scream LA more than the glitz and glamour of Hollywood and the movie industry. One of the coolest things to do in California is to hike up to the Hollywood sign, one of the most iconic sights in LA. Technically, the sign itself is blocked off (and don’t even try to jump the fence) so you are hiking to right behind and above the sign. Still, this is the closest you can get to the sign being able to get so up and close to the iconic monument is such a cool experience! The hike starts inside Griffith Park, from where you can take the Brush Canyon trail. It is a 6.5 mile out and back hike, and is rated moderate difficulty with an 1100 foot elevation gain. Allow about 2 1/2-3 hours to complete the hike. Also be aware that there is hardly any shade on the trail and it tends to get really hot, really fast, so be prepared and carry lots of water with you. There are people here from every corner of the Earth and LA is happy to give each culture its due. Tim and I once went to 3 cultural events in a single weekend – and we weren't even trying hard. On Friday night we went to a chamber music concert at the big Downtown Library. On Saturday night we were in Hollywood to see Amadou and Mariam, a blind couple from Mali who rocked the Afro-pop scene at the El Rey Theater. And on Sunday we were in Chinatown for a big cultural celebration. There is no single recipe for doing a cultural tour of Los Angeles. There are just too many options. But here are some places to look so you can put together your own multicultural tour of Los Angeles. There are neighborhoods throughout the city like Little Tokyo, Olvera Street, Little Ethiopia, Little Bangladesh and Chinatown, just to name a few. Some of them are a bit touristy, but still fun and there are also many unnamed enclaves where various cultures flourish. They often hold festivals as well. And Long Beach seems to have a festival for something every other week. Keep an eye on local calendars. There are also exhibits and performances exploring different cultures all over town. The Craft and Folk Art Museum on Wilshire almost always has something culturally unique going on, as does the Fowler Museum on the UCLA Campus. You can also check out the USC Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena. Again, to name just a few. Then there are the performances, like Amadou and Mariam we mentioned above, or Prince Diabate whom we saw in some tiny club in Santa Monica. One of the best places to look for these more eclectic events is the LA Weekly. LA's multiculturalism is one of its most awesome features and it's something not to be missed if you're visiting the city. It's easy to stack events that are near you or that suit the dates of your visit. It's LA. There's always something going on! Hike in Joshua Tree National Park By Julie from Family Travel Lifestyle While California is famous for National Parks like Yosemite and the Redwoods, one of our lesser-known parks, Joshua Tree, offers fantastic hiking in a unique desert environment. Located in southern California – just east of Palm Springs, and less than a 3-hour drive from San Diego – Joshua Tree offers numerous trails at every level of hiking. What I love about Joshua Tree is that it isn’t as crowded as many other parks and it’s smaller which means you can do a one-day visit and still get in some great hikes and really feel as though you saw the park. Also, this park offers a lot of loop trails, which I tend to prefer to the ‘out and back’ trails. One of the most popular and can’t-miss trails in Joshua Tree is the Skull Rock loop. It’s pretty easy, good for all levels including children, and you get to see the famous and giant Skull-shaped boulder. There’s a great kids’ nature walk called the Discovery Trail that’s less than a mile if you have really little ones. The bigger hikes offer a great variety of sights. There are several hikes up to different peaks, with outstanding views of the mountains and desert. You can hike out to a palm tree oasis or walk through the boulders and include a little scrambling on your hike. The one thing to watch out for is the heat – it’s no joke at Joshua Tree, so come prepared and enjoy! VIsit the Sunny Jim Sea Caves By April from SoCalFunFamily La Jolla is known for the locals who hang around the beach. And no, I am not talking about the hodads, you know, non-surfers, but the friendly seals lounging right there on the sand. It’s also known as an incredibly fun family area, for its good food, and having the coolest sea caves. However, there is only one cave you can explore without a kayak. And that cave is only accessible through Sunny Jim’s Cave Store. From the exterior it looks just like any other beach themed gift shop, but upon further review you might see the long dark tunnel leading what looks like directly into the ground. This is the access to Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave, which was dug out in 1902. To reach the bottom you will pay $5 for adults, and $3 for children, walk down 145 dark, narrow stairs and come out on a damp wooden platform to take in the waves and views from below. This hidden gem is a unique experience if you are in the area. But, make sure to mingle with the locals on the shore below and check out the free, smaller caves right there as well. Read More: One Day in San Diego Pedal Boat At Lake Murray By Martina from Stack Your Dollars One of the best and most relaxing things to do in sunny San Diego is to take a ride on the water at Lake Murray. On a hot day, getting on a pedal boat is a great way to get a nice breeze and cool off. You’ll also be putting those leg muscles to work and getting in some fun exercise! Lake Murray is a 171 acre reservoir with a 3.2 mile shoreline; it can be found on the border of San Diego, La Mesa, and Santee. To rent the pedal boat, you have to go into the concession stand by the parking lot. It costs about $15 to rent per hour, with an additional $15 for a deposit. The boat fits about 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children. This low-cost activity is a great way to get out and have fun. It allowed my family to stick to our very frugal budget. If you would prefer, there are also kayaks, canoes, row boats, and motor boats. However, the pedal boat is my favorite because it also has a canopy to block the sun! Whale Watch in Newport Beach By Rebecca from KwaFare One of the most thrilling outdoor experiences you can have in California is to get up close and personal with some of the largest animals on earth. Whale watching in Southern California can put you right in the migratory path of humpback, minke, fin and gray whales. Even orcas are spotted from time to time, as well as sperm whales and blue whales, the largest animal to have ever lived. An excellent spot for whale watching is Newport Beach, which is only about an hour from LAX airport or downtown Los Angeles. Newport Beach is a cozy community where you’ll find Balboa Pier and Island and some great beaches. My go to whale watching company here is Davey’s Locker. And for good reason. First, they regularly have sales for their whale watching tours on Groupon. So, for about the price of a movie ticket you can take a front row seat to these magnificent creatures for over a couple of hours. But what I really enjoy is hearing the excitement of the crew every time we get to see a whale out at sea. This testifies to just how electrifying it is to witness these deep sea giants in their natural habitat. Despite how many times they get to see them, every time it’s a thrill. And the thrill is definitely contagious. You just never know what you are going to see when you get out on the boat. However, if you want to up your chances of sighting whales go out during their migration times. In general, winter and spring are great times to see gray whales, humpback and minke whales. And summer and fall are ideal for blue whales, finbacks, orcas and sperm whales. So whether you find yourself in the middle of a pod of hundreds of dolphins or next to an enormous blue whale, this is one of those things to do in California that is not to be missed! Visit the Center of the World By Theresa from The Local Tourist Just inside the border in the southeast corner of the state, you can put your toes on the officially designated Center of the World. Felicity, California, is home to the Museum of History in Granite and the Center of the World and is a destination worth a visit that's a whole lot less kitschy than it sounds. In 1985, Jacques-André wrote a children’s book titled “Coe: The Good Dragon at the Center of the World.” Somehow, this Frenchman and Father of American Parachuting convinced the Imperial County Board of Supervisors and Institut Géographique National, the French Mapping Agency, that property he owned in Imperial County should be declared the Center of the World. You can visit this town, population two, and not only make a wish inside a pyramid but also browse granite tablets etched with history. They're designed to last 4,000 years and the goal is that they'll preserve the entirety of humanity for millennia to come. It's a quirky destination with a noble promise, and should definitely be on any southern California itinerary. ATV in the Imperial Sand Dunes By Kay from The Awkard Traveler It isn't general knowledge, but California has sand dunes. Some of the best California sand dunes are found in Southern California. Specifically, the Imperial Sand Dunes State Park right near the border of Mexico. Winter is arguable a better season to visit, especially when summer temperatures can easily reach over 110F. But that also means winter is the most busy time to visit. So, pick your poison. From San Diego, the drive is about 2.5hours, 2 hours from Palm Springs, and 3 hours from Los Angeles, making the Imperial Sand Dunes an easy day trip if you do not want to stay nearby. However, there are camping and RV options at the state park! To enter the park, permits are required from October 1 through April 15 each year. Permits are $35 per week in advance and $50 per week if purchased onsite. Season permits are $150. America the Beautiful National Park pass also counts for this park. Once you are all settled into the park, you're ready to ride! But before you get into your off-highway vehicle (whether it is ATV or a bike, or other), make sure to remember the basics. Wear a protective helmet, pay attention to "closed to vehicle signs," and tall visible red flags are REQUIRED on your vehicle for visibility and safety! There you have it! Apple picking, apple pies to be had and a temple dedicated to a Hindu god!! Southern California sure is eclectic 🙂 What a thoroughly researched post on all the places to enjoy seeing the Fall in this region – I would surely love to visit someday.

Love Julian! We try to go every year…not really for the apple-picked but for all of that yummy PIE. Pie crawl! There’s quite a few on here that we still need to visit. I see you, fall!

I definitely would have thought of SoCal as a great fall destination place, but wow did you prove me wrong. The apple pie alone was enough to draw me in, but I think the views of Big Bear really solidified it for me.

Really helpful read! Those are some amazing destinations. Green Valley lake is another great spot. Also known as “best-kept secret in the San Bernardino Mountains,” it is amazing during fall.

Fall Activities in Southern California

Picture of Local Getaways

Hello, sweet autumn — so nice to have you back. While it’s difficult saying goodbye to those carefree summer days and balmy nights, California in the fall is always a treat. Take it or leaf it, we rustled up some fun SoCal fall getaway suggestions, including family-friendly apple picking, Day of the Dead fest, a WeHo Halloween Carnival, Knott’s Scary Farm and, of course, there’s still plenty of time to celebrate Oktoberfest — prost! Here are the best fall activities in Southern California.

Peak apple pickin' time.

Close-up of two ripe red apples hanging from a tree branch, surrounded by green leaves. The apples are illuminated by sunlight, highlighting their smooth texture and vibrant color. Other apples and blurred foliage fill the background, embodying the essence of fall activities in Southern California.

If you’re longing for a piece of New England right here in Southern California, then historic Oak Glen is the perfect place to visit. Located about two hours outside of Los Angeles on the way to Palm Springs, Oak Glen is home to dozens of apple orchards which cover its cool, sloped hills with blossoms during the spring and fruit in the fall. Everywhere you turn you’ll see Riley’s: Riley’s Apple Farm , Riley’s Farm Fort Cross Orchard , Riley’s at Los Rios Rancho . This is because the Riley family homesteaded a farm back in 1978, and then expanded, and expanded again. All of them are wonderful seasonal businesses offering apple picking of many varieties, along with other fruits and flowers. In the evening, throw your cowboy boots on for barn dances and gospel singers, cider pressings and all kinds of apple-y good fun for the whole family.

Day of the Dead — Hollywood Style

Two individuals wearing elaborate Day of the Dead costumes with intricate face paint. Each wears a headpiece adorned with flowers, candles, and skull decorations. One outfit is predominantly white and the other is black with orange accents—perfect for fall activities in Southern California.

One of my favorite places to go in Los Angeles — hands down — is the Hollywood Forever Cemetery . Beautifully landscaped and steeped in fantastic Hollywood lore, this gorgeous cemetery feels more like a lush secret garden than a creepy burial ground. But every year, Hollywood Forever is transformed into the nation’s largest Dia de los Muertos celebration as they welcome, honor and celebrate the memories of all the beloved souls on the grounds. The Annual Dia de Los Muertos celebration on October 29 will commemorate the spirits of the dead with processions, arts and crafts, music and dance exhibitions, spiritual shrines and even a costume contest for the best traditional Calaca (skeleton) costume.

Halloween Haunts

Three giant skeletons holding lanterns stand illuminated under a sign reading "Knott's Scary Farm" with a spooky backdrop featuring spider webs and eerie lighting, creating a haunted atmosphere at night—one of the thrilling fall activities in Southern California.

Let’s face it: Halloween is fun anywhere, but it’s especially fun at the Halloween Carnaval in West Hollywood . More than 500,000 revelers come from far and wide to participate in the world’s largest Halloween celebration. Taking place on Santa Monica Boulevard from 6pm to 11pm on October 31, it is truly one of the most amazing spectacles you’ll see with every manner of crazy, eccentric, sexy, outrageous costume on display. The big attraction of the evening is the Costume Contest and crowning of the Honorary “Queen of the Carnaval.” The night also includes exciting live entertainment, food vendors, pumpkin-carving contests and more.

All of Southern California’s amusement parks have great Halloween festivities, but Knott’s Scary Farm (a.k.a. Knott’s Berry Farm ) is one of the oldest and most fun. For more than 40 years, this jam, jelly and preserve-themed park has been putting on the best Halloween show in town, now until October 31. Haunted attractions, shows, “scare zones” and rides along with roaming monsters are why Knott’s Scary Farm is not recommended for children under 13.

Prost — it's Octoberfest!

A group of musicians plays various instruments, including a trombone, clarinet, and tuba, in a lively setting with people dancing and flags from different countries hanging in the background. They are dressed in traditional attire, suggesting a culturally festive event typical of Fall Activities in Southern California.

In October, everyone’s German. The longest-running Oktoberfest in the LA area is at Alpine Village restaurant and market in Torrance. This beloved event features a German Oom Pah Pah band, chicken dancing, sing-alongs, and, of course, German food and beer. Alpine Village’s Kraft Bierfest offers hard-to-find taps and limited editions for serious suds fans.

The Best Fall Getaways in California

southern california fall trips

Fall is one of the best times of the year for a weekend getaway in California and the perfect excuse for a quick escape before the holiday season sets in. Along the coast, summer fog dissipates, and you can enjoy the clearest skies you may see all year long.

These top California destinations are places where you can see the fall foliage , taste the fruits of autumn harvests, or enjoy a seasonal activity or festival. They are all especially fun to visit during September, October, and November, making them the perfect end-of-summer getaways.

Napa Valley: Harvest Time

Many people think they should go to Napa Valley during the autumn harvest, which is from late August to early October, but keep in mind that the harvest season is the busiest time of year at a winery. Top that off with an influx of excited visitors and tasting room staff can get too busy to give visitors the dedicated attention that they are able to at other times of the year.

Instead of going during harvest, plan your Napa getaway after the last grapes are crushed and their juice is on the way to becoming wine. Throughout October and November, the crowds start to diminish and the vintners have survived the hectic harvest. You'll not only receive more personal service, but you'll get in on the best  reason to go to Napa in the fall : to see the colorful foliage. In wine country, that's grape leaves, not trees. After giving up their harvest, Napa Valley grapevines put on a vivid display that rivals what any deciduous trees in the state can muster.

Scenic Highway 395: Best Fall Foliage in the State

TripSavvy / Betsy Malloy

Fall is the time to  plan a getaway to Mono County . It's the best place in California for fall color when aspen trees growing on the mountainsides turn golden yellow.  The high country east of the Sierras is one of California's under-discovered areas. In any season, its eye-popping geological formations make for landscapes that look more like Mars than Earth. Take a drive on Highway 395 and you will be busy gawking at beautiful views in all directions.

In the fall, Mother Nature takes things up a notch. Eastern California is hands down the best of many places to see fall foliage in California. Cascades of aspen trees with their golden leaves quivering in the breeze are so beautiful that you will barely be able to believe they are real.

Hearst Castle: Evening Tours

Hearst San Simeon Historical Monument

Autumn is an excellent time to plan a trip to Hearst Castle , and not just because the summer crowds have thinned out. Every fall, the historic home that belonged to publishing tycoon William Hearst begins to offer exclusive night tours. Seeing the recreated facade of a Spanish cathedral or the Greek columns around the iconic pool during the day is one thing, but the night tour is by far the best way to get a glimpse into what life was like in the castle's heyday.

Actors in costume roam the halls of the building, adding a dramatic flair to the tour that you don't get to experience during the day. The night tour is also longer than the daytime visits, clocking in at one hour and 40 minutes. They're offered on weekends starting in October, so don't miss out on this lavishly historical affair if you're passing through California's Central Coast .

Julian: Apple Time

Richard Cummins / Getty Images

In the 1800s, treasure-seekers rushed to Julian looking for gold. The gold ran out, but the plucky little gold rush town survived. Today, it has an attractive downtown and lots of old-fashioned charm. In the fall, people rush to Julian for a new kind of golden treasure that also comes in red and green: the apples that ripen in nearby orchards in the fall and are primed for visitors to come and pick.

Plan your getaway to Julian during the fall and you'll find roadside stands selling apple varieties you've never heard of. You can buy them ready to go or pick them yourself for a fun afternoon spent with family and friends out in the orchards. And don't miss out on all of the locally prepared specialties—every cafe in town offers their own versions of homemade apple pie and cider.

Lake Tahoe: Fall Foliage

Claver Carroll / Getty Images

Between the busy winter and summer seasons, Lake Tahoe quiets down and the days are clear and crisp, making it the perfect time for you to  plan your Lake Tahoe getaway . The weather isn't quite as hot as in the summer, but earlier visits in the season should still see warm enough weather for sitting by the lake and even taking a dip. By mid-October, temperatures start to cool and you may even see snow if you visit in November—perfect for hitting up the Tahoe ski slopes .

Throughout September and October, you can enjoy scenic hikes or take a leisurely drive around the lake to see the aspens as they change color to bright yellow, which is especially vibrant against the green backdrop of the fir trees. Another Tahoe experience you can only enjoy in the fall in the seasonal salmon run. As the water begins to cool in October, salmon exit the lake en masse to the nearby rivers and streams to spawn and it's truly a sight to behold.

San Francisco: Clear Skies, No Crowds

Marco Simoni / Getty Images

If you want to see San Francisco under clear, blue skies and without having to elbow your way through crowds of tacky tourists, go in the fall. That's when the legendary San Francisco summer fog goes away along with the crowds of tourists that can make all the tourist attractions overly busy. September and October are actually the months with the best weather in San Francisco, with consistently clear days and much warmer temperatures than summer—perfect for visiting some of the local beaches , such as Ocean Beach or China Beach .

Apart from easier access to less-crowded attractions, you can also experience some of the city's most iconic events in the fall. The Folsom Street Fair isn't everyone's cup of tea, but this leather festival is a staple September event and uniquely San Francisco. In October, the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival takes over Golden Gate Park for three days of music, dancing, food, and drinks.

Anza-Borrego Desert: Starry Skies

Kevin Key / Slworking / Getty Images

Because of its clear skies and absence of light pollution, Anza-Borrego State Park and nearby Borrego Springs are perfect for star-watching any time of year. But in the summer, this desert can be hot enough to send you running for the nearest air-conditioned space even in the middle of the night. If you plan your trip to Anza-Borrego in the fall, you can enjoy balmy evening temperatures while you take in those sparkling skies.

The park is located near the border between California and Mexico, a little less than two hours inland from San Diego and not far from Joshua Tree National Park , in case you want to complement your trip with another one of Southern California's treasured parks.

Gold Country

Kai Schreiber / Flickr / CC BY-SA 2.0

Gold Country is one of California's earliest settled areas, nestled in the foothills of the Sierras Nevadas. Prospectors flocked here during the Gold Rush of 1849 hoping to make their fortunes, but today visitors throughout the fall can find gold in the color of the leaves as they turn a brilliant yellow.

Gold Country is located off of Highway 49, and Sonora is the biggest city in the area, but you can also visit frontier-style towns in nearby Jamestown and Jackson. Columbia State Historic Park recreates the magic of a gold rush town with a working blacksmith and the possibility to actually pan for gold in the local streams.

Plan a getaway to Gold Country in the fall and you can also visit the orchards in Apple Hill, stop by a winery, go shopping for antiques, or explore one of the area's several caverns.

There are so many fun events to go to as well in Southern California. Some scary, some family friendly, but all are a good time.

Most theme parks offer haunted and family friendly events such as:

Knotts Spooky Farms and Knotts Scary Farm : go in the day for kids to trick or treat on weekends, or in the evening to be scared out of your mind.

Sea World – Halloween Spooktacular for the kids to go trick or treating and fun decorations or for the first time ever they are now doing a weekend night scare park.

Universal Studios – Halloween Horror Nights, and I’ve heard it’s really scary here.

Disneyland- Oogie Boogie Bash after hours and this is completely family friendly

Nights of the Jack – walkable Halloween event and a feast for your senses.

LA Haunted Hayride – The annual event will feature a traditional hayride through the dark forest of Griffith Park, creepy mazes, trick-or-treating and guests can explore the fictional town of Midnight Falls as it celebrates its 13th annual Halloween Festival in the year 1985.

Most of the California zoos also do fun events and activities; look into those!

Carve a pumpkin. Go traditional and carve a face; or you can opt to paint a pumpkin, use stickers or even these neat “ Mr. Potato Head ” pieces. But, it’s fun to get those creative juices flowing and do something fun as a family.

Take a hike . Our favorite Halloween hike is found in Norco, Ca and is called Pumpkin Rock .

Hit up a fun amusement park celebration. Many like Sea World, Knotts Berry Farm, The Discovery Cube Science Center in Orange County and Los Angeles, Legoland, and even the aquariums like Aquarium of the Pacific and Scripps currently have discounted pricing on fun fall activities.

Dress up in fun costumes. We love doing DIY costumes for parties or trick-or-treating and think it’s been a very fun family tradition. Be it couples costumes , f amily costumes or just children’s costumes .

Or even hold your own Halloween party. We are huge fans of hosting your own “ Murder Mystery Party “. It’s super fun and easy to do, and will be a huge thrill for all your guests.

Dinner and Games at Riley’s Farm in Oak Glen. We go to the Legend of Sleepy Hollow Show every year and can’t say enough good things.

Shop for spooky decorations at the coolest shop in Orange County: Roger’s Gardens ; and maybe grab a meal at the extraordinary restaurant attached.

Fall is such a wonderful time of the year to enjoy the simple pleasures of life with those you love. Gather with family and friends and make this a season of memory making.

20 Weekend Getaways in Southern California

By: Author Sharlene Earnshaw

Posted on Last updated: May 31, 2024

20 Weekend Getaways in Southern California

There are so many wonderful weekend getaways in Southern California! The region is incredibly diverse with mountain, desert, beach, and wine getaways just a short drive away.

Here are 20 great places to spend the weekend in California in 2024. Whether it is adventure or relaxation you crave, we’ve got you covered.

Headed north? Then you will definitely want to check our guide to the best Northern California weekend getaways.

Southern California Weekend Getaways

1. big bear.

Big Bear is one of the best Southern California Weekend Getaways

Big Bear has been one of the most popular weekend getaways in Southern California for generations. My great grandfather built a cabin up near Big Bear Lake nearly 100 years ago and since then, word has definitely gotten out about this special place!

If SoCal residents want to enjoy snow, droves of them head up towards Big Bear after a winter storm. If you want to avoid a traffic jam, try to time your visit for mid-week.

We love skiing at Bear Mountain or Snow Summit, enjoy snow tubing at Magic Mountain, and joining snowshoeing tours with the folks at Big Bear Discovery Center.

When the snow is gone, Big Bear is still an ideal weekend getaway for those who want to enjoy some cool mountain air and walk among the pines. There are several hiking trails in the area.

The centerpiece of Big Bear is Big Bear Lake, and the summer is the perfect time to enjoy it. You can fish, rent a pontoon boat , coast around on a Wave Runner, or even paddle a stand-up paddleboard.

Big Bear made our list of the best California mountain towns . See what other cool towns made the list .

Best Time to Visit : Winter for skiing and snow play. Summer for hiking and boating.

Don’t Miss:  Strolling through Big Bear Lake Village. This charming little downtown district is filled with cute little shops and fun restaurants. You can even take a horse-drawn carriage ride through town!

Stay Here: Big Bear is a great place to enjoy some time with family in a cabin. Big Bear Vacations has a great inventory of cabins at various size and price points.

2. Santa Barbara

Big Bear is a great Southern California Weekend Getaway

Heading up the coast to Santa Barbara is definitely one of my favorite weekend getaways in Southern California. Why? The scenery, weather, and wine scene are hard to beat!

It is no surprise that celebrities like Oprah and Prince Harry call the region home. Known as the American Riviera , Santa Barbara is a simply gorgeous place where the mountains meet the sea and the Mediterranean architecture reflects the region’s Spanish colonial roots.

Your visit to Santa Barbara should include some time at the beach , and East Beach is the city’s hub of activity. It is a popular spot for biking, sunbathing, kite flying, and water play.

It is also located adjacent to downtown as well as Stearns Wharf, a fun place to enjoy a drink and appetizers while taking in the waterfront.

Leadbetter Beach is a good spot to visit if you want to surf or boogieboard. Hendry’s Beach (aka: Arroyo Burro Beach) is the place to go if you want bring your dog along with you. Summerland Beach is a nice locale to relax and enjoy your own piece of paradise.

Downtown, you won’t want to miss Santa Barbara’s  Urban Wine Trail   which has more than two dozen tasting rooms with wines from the area’s celebrated wine region.

You also won’t want to miss strolling the grounds of Mission Santa Barbara , known as the Queen of the Missions . It was founded in 1786 and the inspiration behind the city’s red-roofed architecture.

If shopping and window watching are your thing, spend time strolling down State Street and through Paseo Nuevo , admiring the shops along palm-lined streets. There is a free shopping trolley that will help you around the area.

The Santa Barbara Zoo is a great destination for animal lovers. It is small but beautiful and feeding giraffes with beach views can’t be beat!

Best Time to Visit: Anytime, but summer and early fall are best if you want to get in the water.

Don’t Miss: Renting a surrey and biking along East Beach. It is a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the scenery.

Stay Here : Four Seasons Resort the Biltmore Santa Barbara is worth the splurge. It is one of my all-time favorite resorts because of it’s stunning beauty and ideal location, across from Butterfly Beach. It is also popular with the rich and famous.

3. Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach is a favorite weekend destination in Orange County

Laguna Beach is a dream destination for those that love art and the ocean . It is the home of the famed Pageant of the Masters as well as several art festivals and galleries.

Laguna’s beaches are some of the most beautiful in the state. Some of my favorites include Treasure Island Beach (in front of the ritzy Montage Resort), Victoria Beach with its famed tower, and Crystal Cove State Park which straddles the border of Laguna Beach and Corona del Mar.

Main Beach is located on the edge of downtown and the most popular beach with tourists. Take in the views and then walk across the street to stroll quaint streets filled with charming shops, great restaurants, and several art galleries.

If you enjoy hiking, don’t miss the trails at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park (I love the Serrano Ridge/Little Sycamore Canyon loop) or the Morro Canyon portions of Crystal Cove State Park . Both are exceptionally beautiful in the spring when the hillsides are lush and sprinkled with wildflowers.

If you want to get out on the water, consider taking a whale watching cruise out of nearby Dana Point. December through March is prime gray whale watching season while during the summer you may catch a glimpse of the blue whale, the largest animal on earth.

Best Time to Visit: Laguna is a year-round destination but if you love art, come during the summer to enjoy the Sawdust Festival and Pageant of the Masters.

Don’t Miss: Pageant of the Masters where locals dress up as characters from famed works of art and pose to recreate the paintings and sculptures. It is incredibly realistic and truly has to be seen to be believed!

Stay Here : Surf and Sand Resort is a beachfront resort with a great location. How close is to the surf? Close enough that ear plugs are offered to guests if they don’t want to listen to the waves crashing!

The resort is just a 15-minute walk from the heart of downtown (or take the free trolley) and nearly all the rooms have ocean views. The resort’s Splashes Restaurant is a great spot for a special meal overlooking the water.

Laguna Beach is one of several amazing daytrips from San Diego .

4. Coronado Island

Hotel Del Coronado is one of the most famous landmarks in California

Coronado Island is just a short, 15-minute ferry ride from Downtown San Diego but in many ways, it feels like it is a world away. The island has a small town atmosphere and one of the best beaches in the country.

During the summer months, there is live music playing at the Coronado Ferry landing every weekend from 2-5PM.

My favorite way to explore Coronado Island is by bike. The island is flat and easy to navigate. There are several places to rent bikes and they all include maps.

The most famous spot in all of Coronado is the Hotel Del Coronado. This red-roofed landmark has been drawing dignitaries, Hollywood celebrities, and families from all over the country for over 100 years.

Discover why Hotel Del Coronado made our list of the 75 California Landmarks You Must See Before You Die .

It sits on Coronado Beach which is often included on lists highlighting the best beaches in America. During the winter months, the resort plays host to an outdoor ice rink, and there is nothing better than ice skating with ocean views!

Orange Avenue is the island’s main drag. It is a great spot to shop in one-of-a-kind stores, eat, and just taken in the overall vibe of the area. If you are craving something bubbly, make sure to stop by Coronado Brewing Company .

Best Time to Visit: The winter if you want to check “ice skate by the ocean” off your bucket list. But truthfully, Coronado is an all-season destination.

Don’t Miss: The Sandcastle Man . He is known for creating epic sandcastles in front of the Hotel Del and he even offers lessons !

Stay Here : Obviously the Hotel Del Coronado is the most well known choice, but we also love Loews Coronado Bay Resort which sits near Silver Strand State Beach.  Jet skis, powerboats, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards are available for rent from the resort.

5. Palm Springs

Palm Springs is a popular Southern California weekend getaway

Palm Springs has been a Southern California weekend getaway since the Golden Age of Hollywood. It is the land of palm trees, golf courses, and swimming pools.

While the Coachella Valley is most definitely a desert, the Palm Springs region is an oasis. It sits on the 4th largest aquifer on the planet – that’s how they keep all those golf courses so green!

On the edge of town, Indian Canyons are lush, palm-filled canyons fed by the shallow aquifer. For a small fee, guests can gain access to these canyons which are great for hikes and picnics. Don’t miss Murray Canyon which has a 3.9-mile trail leading to the Seven Sacred Sisters Waterfall.

One of most unique experiences in Palm Springs is taking the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway up to the Mountain Station which sits at 8,500 foot in elevation on Mount San Jacinto.

Temperatures are typically 30-40 degrees cooler than they are on the valley floor, and there is often snow during the winter months! Where else can you trade sun-kissed palm trees for snow-blanketed white firs in just 10 minutes?

Best Time to Visit: Late fall through early spring is you are looking for ideal golf and hiking weather. Summer if you want to snag hotel deals and spend most of your time in the pool.

Don’t Miss: Palm Springs Villagefest , the weekly street fair that takes places every Thursday night and features lots of great booths, music, and food.

Stay Here : If you have kids, the waterpark at Omni Rancho Las Palmas will be sure to keep smiles on their faces. The La Quinta Resort is known for its dozens of pools, world-class golf courses and tennis program, and being dog friendly.

6. Joshua Tree National Park

southern california fall trips

With its towering boulders, diverse desert life, and iconic namesake trees, Joshua Tree National Park is a one of the best weekend getaways in Southern California for folks who love to be outside.

Joshua Tree National Park is a place where the high desert (Mojave) and low desert (Colorado) meet. This allows visitors to see two unique desert environments, but the high desert with its unusual-looking Joshua trees is the main attraction.

Climbing massive boulders is one of the most popular things to do inside the park. You will see plenty of professional climbers with crash pads, but amateurs will have just as much fun scrambling around in popular spots like Jumbo Rocks and Hidden Valley .

If you are looking for a nice hike, try the 1.1-mile loop to Barker Dam . There are boulders to climbs on along the way and prehistoric rock art to admire. Arrive at dusk or dawn and you may even see Bighorn sheep!

The Ryan Mountain trail is a great hike if you want a good workout. The trail gains 1,000 feet in just 1.5 miles before reaching the 5,461′ summit. Once at the top you will have a 360-degree view of Joshua Tree National Park.

I also recommend signing up to take the Keys Ranch tour. Long before Joshua Tree became a national park, it was the home of exceptionally hearty people with colorful stories.

This tour takes takes visitors to the former homestead of Bill and Frances Keys, which includes a ranch house, schoolhouse, and store, along with lots of great tales of pioneering desert life. You can only buy tour tickets at the Oasis Visitor Center, beginning at 8:30am each day.

Ready to visit the desert? Don’t miss our epic Joshua Tree Day Trip Itinerary .

Best Time to Visit: During the spring wildflower bloom when the desert becomes a riot of color.

Don’t Miss: Star gazing. These desert skies are far from the light pollution of the LA Basin and the Milky Way is sure to dazzle.

Stay Here : If you want to stay inside the park, bring a tent because campgrounds are the only lodging available. If you crave four walls, head to the small community of Joshua Tree which plays host to a couple charming small inns and B&Bs. Try the Joshua Tree Inn or bring a group and rent out El Coyote , a residence on five acres with views of the park.

Joshua Tree is one of several national parks near LA . Check out the other amazing parks just a short drive away.

7. Catalina

Catalina is one of the most popular weekend getaways in Southern California

Catalina is one of those weekend getaways in Southern California that is close by but feels like a world away. You can take a helicopter to Catalina Island, but most folks take the 40-minute ferry ride from Long Beach or Dana Point.

The most popular destination on Catalina is the charming town of Avalon, where golf carts are the main mode of transportation.

One of my favorite things to do in Avalon is take the zip line eco-tour. Tour guides offer up info about the unique flora and fauna of the island in between zips across a canyon with sweeping ocean views.

Your zip line tour ends at Descanso Beach Club , a great place to rent a cabana and enjoy a day of lounging, food, and drinks. The island’s signature drink is the Buffalo Milk which is made with creme de cacao, creme de banana, Kahlua, half & half, and plenty of vodka.

The waters off Catalina are filled with life. Many folks bring their wet suits and snorkeling gear to check out the fish living the kelp beds. If you would rather stay dry, try a glass bottom boat or submarine tour.

Back on land, you might want to spend your days four-wheeling on a back country tour in search of the island’s resident buffalo herd, playing mini-golf at one of the nicest courses I have ever seen, or admiring the Wrigley Botanic Gardens.

Best Time to Visit: Summer if you want to get in the water. Otherwise, Catalina is a great destination anytime of year.

Don’t Miss: Two Harbors , Catalina’s tiny hamlet with one hotel, one restaurant, one general store, and even a one-room schoolhouse. It is a great place to hike, spend time at the beach, and camp.

Stay Here : Hotel Vista Del Mar is located on the beach, overlooking Avalon Bay. It has incredible views, evening milk and cookies, complimentary beach chairs, and one of the best locations in all of Avalon.

The Millennium Falcon inside Disneyland's Star Wars-themed Land

Anaheim is the home of Disneyland, and us Disney fans think it is a fabulous place to enjoy the weekend. If you haven’t been to Disneyland for a few years, you will be surprised by how much has changed.

Disney California Adventure (DCA), Disneyland’s sister park, has had a full makeover. Highlights include Cars Land, Pixar Pier, and the food festivals that occur throughout the year.

Over at Disneyland, the newest land is Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge . It is basically paradise for Star Wars fans where you can pilot the Millennium Falcon, build your own lightsaber, and have a cocktail like the Fuzzy Ttauntaun or Jedi Mind Trick at Oga’s Cantina.

If you are a foodie, definitely head over to the Anaheim Packing District where craft beers and creative eateries are housed in the Anaheim Packing House, a former citrus packing warehouse.

Anaheim was founded by German immigrants back in 1857 and has been in the beer brewing business ever since. It is home to over 15 breweries , and I think a great goal is to try them all!

Anaheim is also home to the Angels, so make sure to visit during baseball season so you can catch a game.

Best Time to Visit: The first two weeks in December are great if you want to experience Disney at Christmastime with out the massive crowds. Spring and summer are ideal if you wan to see the Angels play.

Don’t Miss: The Disney California Adventure Food and Wine Festival . There are 13 different marketplaces serving creative dishes and regional beverages that reflect the bounty of California. Purchase a Sip & Savor Pass, a mimosa flight, and taste the day away in between rides.

Stay Here : There are so many great hotels in Anaheim but I want to give a nod to the OG of Disney lodging, the Disneyland Hotel . The hotel has undergone extensive renovations and the pool area is really fun. Plus, the drinks at Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar are legit!

9. La Jolla

La Jolla is a great beach town and weekend destination

La Jolla is another one of my favorite Southern California weekend getaways because it a great place to enjoy a weekend at the beach!

La Jolla Shores is my favorite beach in La Jolla. It is a long strand of beach that is perfect for water play and sunbathing, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants nearby.

One of my favorite active things to do is kayak to the Seven Caves near La Jolla Shores. There are several companies that offer guided tours and it is the perfect “beginner” sea kayak experience.

Here are 25 caves in California you will defintiely want to visit.

On the way, you will paddle over the La Jolla Underwater Park which is home to sea lions, harmless leopard sharks and bright orange garibaldi.

I like kayaking with Everyday California , and can never resist picking up merchandise with their cool surfing bear logo.

If you are looking for a great spot to take pictures, head over to Scripps Pier . It is small enough to get the full pier in your shot and snag those classic “California pier” shots .

La Jolla Cove is another beautiful beach. It is a small cove that is picture perfect, and just north of the ever-popular seals at Children’s Pool. George’s at the Cove is a great place to enjoys drinks, apps, and sunsets.

Another spot you won’t want to miss is the Torrey Pines Gliderport . This is one of our favorite places to bring a picnic and then enjoy watching hang gliders launching off cliffs to soar above the waves crashing below.

Speaking of Torrey Pines, you should definitely head over to the Torrey Pines State Reserve and talk a walk along the beautiful cliffside trails.

The Torrey Pines are the rarest pine trees in the country, and only grow in La Jolla and on Santa Rosa Island off the coast of Santa Barbara.

Best Time to Visit: La Jolla is an ideal destination any time of year.

Don’t Miss: If you visit during the late summer, definitely don’t miss snorkeling with the leopard sharks. Everyday California offers snorkeling gear rentals as well as snorkeling tours. The leopard sharks are harmless but you get the bragging rights of having checked “snorkeled with sharks” off your bucket list!

Stay Here : La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club is a private club that also has beachfront rooms for non-member guests. When guests stay in these rooms they have access to club amenities. In addition to beach umbrella and chair service, they also offer beachfront tables, chairs, and barbeques to rent to have a sunset dinner with your toes in the sand.

10. Long Beach

Long Beach is an up and coming Southern California Destination

Long Beach has had a bit of a renaissance in the 21st Century. It went from being gritty and a bit sketchy to being filled with hip, revitalized neighborhoods and world-class attractions.

Long Beach’s Naples neighborhood is trendy area filled with shops, restaurants, and beautiful homes lining the area’s canals and waterways. It is a great place to kayak, paddleboard, or take a chartered gondola ride at sunset.

While in Long Beach, you definitely don’t want to miss the Aquarium of the the Pacific , the largest aquarium in Southern California. Book a behind-the-scenes tour to get up close and personal with seals, sea lions, penguins, and sea otters.

You can also book whale and dolphin watching cruises as well as harbor tours via the Aquarium. The waters off Long Beach are great places to see gray whales in the winter and blue whales in the summer.

Across the street from the Aquarium is The Pike, an outdoor outlet mall filled with brand name shops and dining. Shoreline Village is also nearby and features fun little shops in Easter egg-colored buildings.

Long Beach’s most iconic attraction is the Queen Mary . Today, the Queen Mary is a hotel and attraction, but in its heyday, it made 1001 transatlantic crossings.

Visitors can choose from several different tours, watch a movie in the 4D theater, view a replica of the Queen Mary made from 250,000 LEGO bricks, eat at the onboard restaurants, or stay in one of the ship’s rooms.

Best Time to Visit: Long Beach is an all-season destination. The weather is pleasant year round.

Don’t Miss: The Pow-Wow! Art Festival which takes place every July. Contemporary graffiti artists and muralists from around the world flock to Long Beach to create amazing street art in a week filled with music, events, and live scaffolding painting.

Stay Here : The Hyatt Regency Long Beach is located in the heart of Long beach’s tourist center and is within walking distance of Shoreline Village, the Aquarium of the Pacific, and The Pike.

11. Channel Islands

Santa Cruz Island Channel Islands National Park

The Channel Islands are one of the best Southern California weekend getaways for those who really want to get away from it all.

Channel Islands National Park sits off the coast of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties and is wild, remote, and beautiful. It is made up of five different islands, but most people visit Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands because they are the closest.

Most people reach the Channel Islands via the Island Packers ferry out of Ventura Harbor, but if you have your own boat, feel free to set sail for the islands yourself!

Santa Cruz Island is the best island for a weekend getaway because it is large and offers plenty of opportunities to hike and sea kayak.

Channel Islands Adventure Company leads guided kayaking tours of the islands many sea caves. There is also great snorkeling to enjoy in the kelp forests just off the coast. Wetsuits are recommended.

There are no food concessionaires on these largely undeveloped islands. Be sure to pack in all the food you will need for the duration of your stay. There is potable water available at the Scorpion Campground on Santa Cruz Island.

Best Time to Visit: Early spring for wildflowers or summer for snorkeling.

Don’t Miss: Wildflower season when brilliant yellow coreopsis and purple lupines dot the landscape with a riot of color.

Stay Here : If you want to stay on an island, you have to camp. Campgrounds are undeveloped and have pit toilets. If you prefer four walls, consider making a couple day trips out to the islands and sleeping at a hotel near Ventura Harbor .

12. San Diego

San Diego is one of the best weekend getaways in Southern California

San Diego has long been a favorite weekend getaway for Southern Californians due to its great weather and numerous things to do.

San Diego’s waterfront downtown area is a great place to call home base as you explore the city. The Gaslamp District is a happening area with lots of restaurants, bars, and people watching.

The entire downtown area is very walkable but there are always pedicabs in the main tourist areas that you can hop on if your feet get tired.

The USS Midway, a retired aircraft carrier, is docked at the waterfront and is open as a museum. Audio tours allow you to explore the massive ship at your own pace and learn what life is like aboard the cities at sea.

The waterfront is also a great place to catch a harbor cruise. I recommend opting for the sunset cruise where you can sip cocktails, watch the sunset, and then return to vibrant city lights.

If you are an animal lover, don’t miss the San Diego Zoo , often recognized as the best zoo in the United States. This zoo has had a hand in helping several species escape extinction, including the beloved California condor.

My family absolutely loves the zoo’s Animals in Action experience. We were able to pet a rhino and a zebra, feed hilarious pink flamingos, and see wild cats like the beloved cheetah, up close and personal.

The San Diego Zoo is in Balboa Park , a sprawling park that is larger than NYC’s Central Park and home to several museums. Our favorites are the San Diego Natural History Museum and the fun San Diego Model Railroad Museum.

San Diego is known as one best destinations in the US for people who love craft breweries. Head to 30th Street in North Park, aka Beer Blvd. , to taste your way through several breweries. Each spot has its own vibe and unique flavors.

Mission Beach is popular with the young, college crowd. There are several restaurants, bars, and a great stretch of beach. Nearby Mission Bay is a popular spot for watersports like jet skiing and water skiing, and home to SeaWorld, famous for its sea mammals and thrill rides.

Best Time to Visit: San Diego is a great place to visit year round. If you have kids, visit in October during “Kids Free” month to visit over 100 destinations offering free admission or meals to children all month long.

Don’t Miss: A ballgame at Petco Park , home to the San Diego Padres. The field is located right downtown.

Stay Here : I have never met an Embassy Suites I didn’t like and the Embassy Suites San Diego Bay Downtown is one of my favorites. Besides having a great location across from Seaport Village, a touristy shopping and restaurant area on the water, it has spacious rooms, a good breakfast, and that famous Embassy Suites complimentary happy hour.

13. Huntington Beach

southern california fall trips

Huntington Beach is a fun weekend destination for those looking to spend some time on the sand. The city is known for its wide beaches and lively beach town vibe.

Also known as Surf City USA, Huntington Beach is a fun place to learn how to surf and there are several operators, like HB mainstay Cork Carroll’s , who are eager to get you standing on a board.

Surfing not your thing but like to stay active? There are several volleyball courts right on the sand.

Biking along the 15-mile bike trail that hugs the coast is another popular activity. There are several bike rental stands near the pier.

A bonfire is the best way to enjoy the beach at night. There are several bonfire pits on the city’s beaches, but you will have to claim them early if you are trying to snag one during peak season.

Huntington Beach is one of the best Southern California weekend getaways for dog lovers, thanks to its dog beach where pups can run unleashed on the sand and in the water. Restaurants like the Sit Stay Cafe and Park Bench Cafe and spots like Top Dog Barkery welcome Fido.

If it is dining and shopping you seek, there are lots of great options, including Pacific City, an outdoor mall filled with shops and restaurants located right on Pacific Coast Highway. Duke’s is a classic spot for a nice seafood dinner or Sunday brunch located at the base of the Huntington Beach Pier.

Best Time to Visit: There isn’t a bad time to visit Huntington Beach, but summer is best if you want to spend time in the water.

Don’t Miss: If you want to watch the best surfers in the world do their thing, visit during the annual US Open of Surfing which takes place during the end of July and beginning of August.

Stay Here : The Kimpton Shorebreak is a great pet-friendly (with no extra charge!) hotel that has beach cruisers, umbrellas, beach chairs, and even ice chests for guests to check out as part of their Beach Amenities Program. It is located in the heart of the HB action and the closest hotel to the dog beach.

14. Venice/Santa Monica

southern california fall trips

Venice and Santa Monica are neighboring beach towns with great urban beach vibes.

Venice has long known for its funky Bohemian spirit and eclectic boardwalk filled with street performers, cheap sunglasses stands, and pot shops. I once had a guy offer to sell me a bunny out of his coat pocket while I strolled the boardwalk!

It is truly a great place for people watching because people come here to be seen! Muscle Beach is popular with the shirtless gym rat crowd and there is always a crowd around the beachfront skate park’ s bowl.

Beyond the boisterous boardwalk, head slightly inland to find peace and beauty while walking the Venice canals . If you have a kayak or paddleboard, you can also use it to paddle under the bridges and past beautiful homes.

If it is shopping and dining that you crave, stylish Abbot Kinney Boulevard has some of the city’s best shops, restaurants, and bars.

Just down the beach from Venice is Santa Monica, the beach and boardwalk most associated with LA, thanks to Hollywood cinema.

Route 66 once ended at the Santa Monica Pier, and it is still one of the most popular beach attractions in California today. Pacific Park, a fair on the pier, is home to classic rides and carnival games.

Santa Monica State Beach is very popular and usually bustling with tourists and locals alike. Its wide stretch of sand is a great place to spend the afternoon.

Shoppers won’t want to miss the 3rd Street Promenade or the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market . If it is a great meal you crave, try a farm-to-table meal at Rustic Canyon , the famed Office burger at Father’s Office , and handmade pasta at Uovo ,

Best Time to Visit: Both cities are great to visit year round but sunny days, fewer crowds, and lower prices can be find during the early fall months of September and October.

Don’t Miss: First Fridays , which takes place on the first Friday evening of each month on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. During this event the boulevard is lined with the region’s hottest food trucks.

Stay Here : Oceanfront Hotel Casa del Mar is located in between the Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach. Their Sea Wellness Spa offers a full array of facials, wraps, massages, and state-of-the-art treatments. On-site dining comes with perfect sunset views.

15. Temecula

southern california fall trips

Temecula is a wonderful wine region northeast of San Diego that has become one Southern California’s most popular weekend destinations for wine enthusiasts.

Many people begin their weekends by seeing the Temecula Valley from above on a hot air balloon ride. Balloon rides begin bright and early at dawn, and include beautiful sunrises over the vineyards and mimosa toasts.

If you would rather stick closer to the ground, try a horseback ride instead. Wine Country Trails by Horseback offers 90-minute rides out on the hills and through the vineyards of  Maurice Car’rie Winery .

More animal-based fun can be found at The Alpaca Hacienda where you can feed and pet alpacas and shop for alpaca goods. It can also be found at Sugarplum Farm which is home to zebras, camels, and miniature horses, as well as incredible chocolates.

If you want to try something unique and fun, head into the hills south of town to mine for gems like tourmaline, aquamarine, quartz, and garnet at the Oceanview Mine . My family had a great time hunting for treasure and touring the mine. We all came home with special gems.

Old Town Temecula is a hub of shopping, dining, and lodging, all set in an Old West atmosphere, complete with wooden boardwalks. There are several breweries and bars in the area.

If it is wine you came for, you will be happy to know there are nearly 50 wineries in the region. It is always more fun to go wine tasting when someone else is driving, and Temecula Valley Jeep & Wine Tours are happy to act as your guide takes you to three wineries, into a barrel room, and on a back-road vineyard tour.

If you have a larger group, a limo tour is a better option. Temecula Limo Wine Tasting can accommodate groups of up to 14 people. They offer discount tasting tickets for seven different wineries and even have lunch packages.

Best Time to Visit: Avoid the summer and early fall if you don’t want to risk visiting on a 100-degreee day.

Don’t Miss: Socal Axe Throwing , which has a location in Temecula located right next to Wild Barrel Brewing. Beer and throwing axes will surely make for a fun evening.

Stay Here: Pont Vineyard Inn is located in the heart of Temecula Wine Country. Rooms are spacious and most have outstanding views of the property’s pond or surrounding vineyards.

The pool is a great place to lounge with a a cocktail and take in the scenery. Three wineries are within walking distance and dozens more are a short, Uber ride away.

southern california fall trips

Malibu is well known for its celebrity residents, but us commoners can still enjoy a weekend getaway in this beautiful beach town.

When I was growing up in Ventura County, Zuma Beach was our favorite beach to frequent. Its a good place to surf, sunbathe on wide stretches of sand, and play beach volleyball. You may even spot a couple celebrities!

If you would rather skip the crowds and focus on spotting sea life instead of famous people, Westward Beach and Leo Carillo State Park are good options. Leo Carillo is known for its tide pools and sea caves. Westward is a good place to spot seals, sea lions, and dolphins.

If you want to surf (or watch surfers), head to Malibu Lagoon State Beach . I like coming here near sunset to watch the surfers ride waves as the sun goes down and take pictures of Malibu Pier in the foreground.

If you want to shop where the beautiful people shop, head to Malibu Country Mart . Far from country, this upscale shopping center is filled with high end boutiques, galleries, and a variety of dining options.

You visit Malibu without enjoying a meal to remember. Nobu Malibu has a stunning oceanfront setting and some of the best sushi in the state. Malibu Farm Cafe is a more casual spot on the pier with fresh made juices, a great crab cake sandwich, and a wide variety of vegetarian options

Malibu is surrounded by hillside and canyons, making it a great place to hike. Favorite spots include the ruins of Tropical Terrace at Solstice Canyon , the trail to seasonal Escondido Falls , sprawling views on Zuma Ridge , and over a dozen other trails in the area.

Malibu’s hills are home to a few different wineries and Malibu Wines is the place to be on Saturday and Sunday. It features wines from Semler and Saddlerock wines, live music, and food trucks.

They even have a wine hikes program that takes guests on guided hikes to Chumash cave paintings and through the Saddlerock Ranch vineyards.

Best Time to Visit: Malibu is fun to visit anytime but I love September when the weather is still warm and the crowds are gone, or March when the hillsides are covered in wildflowers and the waterfalls are running.

Don’t Miss: The Malibu Wine Safari at Saddlerock Ranch. You tour the property in open-air safari vehicles while stopping to taste wine and meet alpacas, bison, zebras, and Stanley the famed giraffe.

Stay Here : The Malibu Beach Inn is located right on the sand on a strip known as Billionaire’s Beach (in other words, they have some wealthy neighbors). Choose and oceanfront room and watch the sunset from your balcony, eat dinner at the onsite Carbon Beach Club, and then fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves.

17. Death Valley

Death Valley National Park is a great weekend getaway

Death Valley’s name turns a lot of people off from visiting. But the truth is, Death Valley is a vast and beautiful place , and there is plenty of life in Death Valley.

Death Valley National Park is the largest national park in the lower 48 , and there are plenty of great places to explore. Just be sure to keep plenty of gas and water in your car because gas stations are scarce, the climate is usually very dry, and distances are vast.

One of my favorite things about Death Valley National Park is that you don’t need to stick to trails when exploring the park! Death Valley is famous for bein the hottest spot in North America during the summer months, but during the winter it is a great place to hike and explore.

You definitely want to visit Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America at 282 feet below sea level. In this land of extremes, be sure to scan the horizon and take in Telescope Peak which is 11,331 feet in elevation and only 15 miles away!

If you are looking to hike, consider exploring Golden Canyon , Mosaic Canyon , Sidewinder Canyon , and the hills around Zabriskie Point . My family loves scrambling up rocky hillsides and forging our own paths.

If it is sand dunes you crave, head over to the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes where you can wander, roll, make sand angels, and even snowboard down the hills. They aren’t the tallest dunes in Death Valley, but they are the most convenient to reach. Visiting the towering Eureka Sand Dunes requires a 2.5-hour drive down a remote dirt road.

The evening is a great time to enjoy Death Valley.  Stars are abundant and the Milky Way is visible.  If the moon is full, consider heading to the sand dunes for some moonlit exploration.

Here are 24 animals in Death Valley you may encounter on your visit.

Best Time to Visit: Winter is the best time to visit if you want to get out and explore the park in pleasant weather. Summer visitation is mostly dominated by Europeans looking to experience some serious heat!

Don’t Miss: The extremely rare pupfish in Salt Creek. Temps in the creek can reach 90 degrees in the summer months but the pupfish endures in the harsh environment. A 1/2 mile boardwalk runs alongside the side of the creek, making it easy to spot these special fish.

Stay Here : The Inn at Death Valley offers four star lodging in the middle of nowhere. This historic hotel was first built in the 1920s but has recently undergone a massive renovation.

The Inn has a spa, a great pool area, and is home to the lowest course in the world, the Furnace Creek Golf Course . It has been named one of the 50 toughest courses in the country.

Ojai Valley Inn

Ojai is one of the best Southern California weekend getaways to enjoy if you are dreaming of spa vacation and prefer things a bit on the “granola” side.

Ojai is a small town located in a valley in northern Ventura County, surrounded by avocado and citrus farms. It is a charming place that bans chain stores but embraces yoga, wellness retreats, and healthy living.

The Ojai Valley Inn is the queen of the spa scene. While stay at the Ojai Valley Inn is highly recommended you can still have still purchase treatments on weekdays without being hotel guest.

Purchase of a treatment also gives you full access to the spa pools, Mind & Body classes, fitness gym as well as indoor facilities for the entire day! The Mind & Body classes include things like yoga, meditation, fitness walks, and spin classes.

In addition to Himalayan salt massages and Kuyam treatments- part healing clay, part dry heat, part guided meditation- the spa offers spiritual counseling, crystal healing therapy, and even custom aromatherapy.

There are several other wonderful spas in the area such as the Oaks at Ojai and the Lavender Inn Spa .

Beyond the spa, Ojai is a great place to get outside. There is horseback riding, and several great local trails for hiking or biking.

Back in town, you don’t want to miss the wonderful shops along Ojai Avenue. Many sells goods from local artists and all are independently operated.

Best Time to Visit: I like to avoid the peak summer months. Summer temps in the Ojai Valley can be quite hot which may limit your ability to enjoy the great outdoors.

Don’t Miss: Bart’s Books, the largest independent outdoor (yes, outdoor) bookstore in the United States.

Stay Here : The Ojai Valley Inn is the big name in town, for good reason. This resort offers much more than the spa and beautiful rooms. There is also a golf course, pools, tennis courts, an artist cottage where you can take classes, and even a beekeeping experience!

19. Solvang

Solvang is a great weekend getaway in Southern California

Solvang is a charming little Dutch town 30 miles north of Santa Barbara. It is filled with cute shops, great pastries and several nods to Dutch culture.

We had fun renting a surrey and peddling around town. Keep an eye out for the Little Mermaid Fountain, five different windmills, and the giant red clog.

There are 20 different beer and wine tasting rooms downtown because Solvang sits on the edge of Santa Barbara County wine country. As a matter of fact, the wine-centric movie, Sideways , was filmed in Solvang!

I highly recommend going on a wine tasting tour to visit several of the 120+ wineries in the area. Options include everything from bike tours to limos.

Food is part of the fun in Solvang. Don’t miss breakfast at Paula’s Pancake House , beers and brats at the Copenhagen Sausage Garden , and Danish pastries from Olsen’s , Mortensen’s , and Birkholm’s .

Best Time to Visit: Visit during the fall and you can enjoy events like Danish Days in September or the Solvang Grape Stomp in October where you can stomp on grapes a la I Love Lucy !

Don’t Miss: Danish Days which is filled with Danish fun! Enjoy folk dancers, three parades, concerts, axe throwing, an Æbleskiver breakfast, historical Viking re-enactments, artisanal craft booths, and plenty of food and drinks!

Stay Here : The Landsby is a small, boutique hotel in the heart of Solvang. It embraces Scandinavian design and heritage, and has charming courtyards with fireplaces. The hotel’s restaurant, Mad & Vin, serves wonderful Wine Country cuisine.

20. Hollywood

southern california fall trips

Hooray for Hollywood! Those of us who grew up in Southern California tend to take Hollywood for granted, but playing tourist for the weekend and going Hollywood can be fun!

Start by taking one of those cheesy celebrity TMZ bus tours or grab a map highlighting the star’s homes, because why not?

Walk the Hollywood Walk of Fame and search for your favorite stars, making time to place your hands and feet in the imprints left by celebrities outside of Grauman’s Chinese Theater .

Want to take pictures with your favorite celebrities but can’t find them anywhere? Head to Madame Tussaud’s and pose with wax replica’s of celebrities like Taylor Swift, Jimmy Kimmel, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, and Tupac.

If you want to see or be a part of the real thing, take a tour of Paramount Studios , the last major studio still located in Hollywood. Or sign up to be a part of a studio live studio audience during a tv taping.

You can’t spend a weekend in Hollywood without spending some time at the theater. There are several famed theaters around town hosting movie premiers, musicals, and concerts. I love watching the latest touring Broadway hits at the Pantages Theater .

After you have had enough of the city, head up into the hills and hike to the world-famous Hollywood Sign. There is a trail that link the sign with the Griffith Observatory . Views are especially impressive sight after a good rain. Runyan Canyon is another great place to hike (and potentially spot celebs).

Best Time to Visit: If you want to spot celebs, come during awards season (generally November through February) or wait for a movie premier starring your favorite actor.

Don’t Miss: A picnic at the Hollywood Bowl . This classic outdoor venue in the Hollywood Hills host famous music artists as well as the LA Philharmonic.

Stay Here : The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is a historic hotel that reflects the glamour Hollywood. It’s palm-lined Tropicana Pool is a great place to kick back with a cocktail and enjoy that California sunshine.

8 perfect California road trips to take for the ultimate fall vibes

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

They say California has no seasons. But anyone who’s taken the time to road trip around the state knows that’s not true.

The Eastern Sierras have spectacular fall colors, beautiful groves of yellow interspersed with vivid orange and reds. As far south as San Bernardino National Forest, you can find quaking aspen becoming bright and golden. And California’s famous wine countries take on warmer, earthier hues. Planted trees offer opportunities for urban leaf peeping.

Even parts of California that don’t see much fall foliage embrace the season. Pumpkin patches and pumpkin spice lattes abound. Orchards open for apple picking and cider galore. The cooler weather makes outdoor adventures in the desert much more enjoyable. Then there’s Halloween: both the kid-friendly trick-or-treating kind and the haunted kind geared toward adults. Whatever autumn vibe you’re looking for, California’s diverse geography and culture has something to offer.

Fall is also a great season to get in your car and drive around California, as the weather is perfect and summer vacation crowds have left. There are fewer crowds in most destinations.

From spots close enough for a one-day road trip to a weeklong adventure through different towns, below are ideas for different types of road trips to get you into the mood for fall. There are plenty of jumping-off points from these destinations for those who want to extend their road trip and explore more of this majestic state. Pointers on the map show the first destination on these road trips.

Where To See Fall Leaves in Southern California

Where to see fall leaves in Southern California. From Santa Barbara to San Diego, you can see autumn leaves change from yellow to orange to red.

As a native of Northern California, I truly miss the seasons up north.  Especially in the fall, when the weather is crisp, and the leaves are turning gorgeous shades of red, orange and yellow.

Now as a resident of Southern California, I have to travel a bit further to see the autumn leaves and take in the cooler weather, but it is still humanly possible!

With most So Cal locals living near the coast, we have to travel to a leaf peeping area at just the right time of year or we miss the foliage.  Luckily for us though, fall color starts in August at around 10,000 feet and drops elevation by elevation at a rate of 500.  So by late October, early November, fall foliage is peak in Southern California.

Here is a list of Southern California’s favorite leaf peeping spots which vary in elevation, time of peak and when colors are at their most intense.

Fall Foliage in Los Angeles

Los Angeles Arboretum & Botanic Gardens , Los Angeles

At the LA County Arboretum & Botanic Gardens, sour gum, chinaberry, Jerusalem thorn, eastern redbud and maples fill with yellow, golden, orange and crimson colors in late October, early November.

Whittier Narrows Recreational Facility , South El Monte

Nature Scavenger Hunt

Stoddar Peak , Near Mount Baldy

If you’re looking for fall colors in Southern California and some nice views on a clear day without a ton of work, one great choice is Stoddard Peak located right below Mount Baldy.  The hike itself is just over 6 miles and just under 1,000 feet in elevation.  Mount Baldy is located off the 210 freeway at Baseline exit.  You do need to purchase a  National Forest Adventure Pass  to park anywhere.

Fall Foliage in Riverside / San Bernardino Counties

Aspen Grove in San Gorgonio Wilderness , Near Big Bear (currently closed)

Per SoCalHiker.net, “Just a short distance from Big Bear we found the southernmost aspen grove in California.  The quaking aspen (populus tremoloids) are readily identified by the disc-like leaves about the size of a silver dollar.  The slightest breeze sets these leaves in motion, leading to that ‘quaking’ effect.  It’s beautiful to see and a delight to the ears.”

Big Bear Lake , Big Bear

Just a short drive from Los Angeles, Big Bear Lake is nestled among the trees in the San Bernardino Mountains.  In the fall, the changing colors contrast dramatically against the many evergreens in the area.   The Woodland Trail is a family-friendly 1.5-mile loop that starts at the Big Bear Discovery Center and is a great place to see fall foliage and the lake below.  The prime time to see the changing leaves are Mid-October through early November.   The best views are from the hiking trails north of the lake.

Grass Valley Lake , Lake Arrowhead

Grass Valley Lake is a reservoir located just 1.9 miles from Lake Arrowhead and home to beautiful scenery, especially in the fall.

Lake Gregory , Crestline

Here you will find black oak and Fremont cottonwood trees and pockets of aspen providing orange, buff, gold and yellow splashes of color among deep green pines.

Large cottonwood provide a golden canopy to the campgrounds at Lake Hemet in the San Jacinto Mountains.  Best chance to see fall leaves is to camp beside the lake surrounded by intense fall color.  Weather permitting, the peak lasts for approximately two weeks.

Cuyamaca Rancho State Park , Julian

This beautiful park offers camping and hiking in an oak woodland forest, with a sprinkling of pines and lovely meadows with creeks.  There are over 100 miles of trails which accommodate hikers, bikers, and equestrians.  The main fall color tree in this State Park is the black oak.  The leaves often turn a nice golden yellow.

Hot Springs Mountain , San Diego County

In a wild and lonely corner of the Los Coyotes Reservation stands the highest point in San Diego County. Hot Springs Mountain, which stands about 20′ higher than Cuyamaca Peak, boasts the stunning views you would expect from a 6,533′ mountain smack dab in the center of the Peninsular Ranges.  Beyond those views, the mountain’s elevation supports a dense forest full of a variety of conifers interspersed with deciduous black oaks, whose leaves turn a brilliant gold during late October and early November.

Palomar Mountain State Park , San Diego County

Located off Highway 76, up Highway S6, left on Highway S7, at the junction near the peak.  This State Park features a nice autumn vista of bracken fern in the meadows turning a rich golden brown against the dark green of adjacent forests.

Laguna Mountain , Eastern San Diego County

Located in eastern San Diego County,  Mnt. Laguna is home to black oak tree which display a vivid mix of green, lime, yellow, orange, gold and buff.  There is also a vast meadow and a lake, which seem out of place in San Diego’s semi-arid back country.

Just an hour northeast of San Diego, Julian is a quaint old mining town where you can see fall foliage in Southern California.  Fall foliage is unusual this far south, but Julian’s apple orchards offer a chance for leaf peeping late in the season.   The prime time to see the leaves changing is late October into early November with the best views are among the apple orchards.

Vivian Creek Trail Head , Forest Falls

The Vivian Creek Trail is located about 20 minutes above Redlands and not too crowded.  It’s a great place to hike along the creek, take a gander at the water fall, and have a picnic.

Happy Leaf Hunting!

No fall road trip list would be complete without the Golden State’s Big Blue. With the summer crowds gone and the busy winter days not yet in full swing, Lake Tahoe’s fall season is as perfect as it can get. The clear and crisp air paired with the colorful landscape of ever-changing trees makes for a dreamy autumn destination to witness on a fall colors road trip.

The best way to see the stunning landscape? Take a hike . Head to Fallen Leaf Lake and walk around the 3.1-mile mountain lake offering spectacular views of the colorful trees in its reflection. For a shorter journey, try the 1.4-mile out-and-back Cascade Falls Trail. This hike is ideal for the entire family, including your furry best friend. Yosemite National Park is unarguably beautiful year-round, yet it’s often overlooked once summer vacations and backpacking trips are over. The park is home to some of the state’s best fall foliage, making it an ideal destination for a fall colors road trip. Featuring every color on the fall spectrum—from pink dogwoods to orange-hued black oaks—Yosemite’s fall foliage is a feast for the eyes.

In the 1800s, gold-seekers rushed to Julian in search of the precious metal . Although the gold ran out eventually, the small town survived the harsh times when many others like it didn’t . Now, the charming city in San Diego County attracts visitors year-round—especially during the fall when it's prime apple-picking time . From Volcan Valley Apple Farm to Apple Starr Orchard , the choices are many and the apples are aplenty.

Aside from munching on local Julian apples, touring the town is an absolute must on a fall driving trip. You should also pursue the antique stores—such as Heartland Vestige—and local craft shops lining the town's Main Street. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

Does anything compare to the beautiful landscape, gorgeous sunsets, and dazzling night skies found in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park ? The lack of light pollution makes this underrated state park one of the best places to visit on a fall road trip. Enjoy mild evening temperatures as you take in the sparkling skies and changing fall landscape.

Start at the visitor center for tips on exploring the land from local park rangers. The park’s 500 miles of arid desertscape make it a popular destination for four-wheelers and mountain bikers. The park’s trails are aplenty, too; a few of them connect to the famed Pacific Crest Trail . Quick day hikes include the two-mile, out-and-back Palm Canyon Trail, which is suitable for all skill levels. While exploring the path, take a break to savor a picnic streamside and enjoy the gorgeous surroundings. Trust us, you won't want your day to end, so pitch a tent, spend a weekend in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and make your fall road trip go on for as long as possible.

Next on your romantic autumn road trip itinerary is a tour at Old Mission Santa Barbara , where you can wander through the rose garden and learn about the history of the "Queen of the Missions." Historic and beautiful, the place is full of endless charm. Keep yourself busy during the rest of your day with activities at the Santa Barbara Waterfront. Here, you'll find a range of fun activities to explore, from boating excursions and stand-up paddleboarding to exemplary museums and superb restaurants.

For an art-appreciating afternoon, check out the area’s famous landmarks and embark on an adventure full of aesthetic history. A tour at Hearst Castle is a must—it adds a much-needed touch of opulence to your autumn road trip . And if a luxurious private retreat sounds enticing, Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort and Spa is the place for you.
