‍ If you’re looking for an entry-level hardtail, it can be hard to sort through the options. This review will help you decide if the Trek X-Caliber 6 is for you.

The Trek X-Caliber 6 is a solid bike overall for anyone just getting into mountain biking. Trek continued this bike after 2016, but you should be able to find it used for a good deal. If you want the modern replacement, the Trek Marlin 6 has similar performance with updated components and design.

I am a dedicated hardtail rider, and I love finding bikes that let you ride hard without needing complex rear suspension. For this review I dug into the details on the Trek X-Caliber 6 and compared it to similar bikes to give you everything you need to know before making a purchase.

‍ Trek X-Caliber 6 Performance

Coming in at $750 MSRP, the Trek X-Caliber 6 is definitely an entry-level mountain bike, so you shouldn’t expect mind-blowing performance. For what it is, the Trek X-Caliber 6 does a good job. With cross-country-oriented geometry and budget (though highly functional) components, it’s ready for fun laps on flowy trails.

It does offer a confident, stable ride that provides real off-road fun on moderate trails. Would I tackle aggressive Moab terrain on this bike? Probably not. But for laid-back riding around local singletrack trail centers, this is a competent choice.

With relatively old school cross-country-inspired geometry, this mountain bike isn’t designed for shredding downhill. If things get steep and rough, this bike will feel out of its element pretty quickly.

Rather than taking this on the roughest terrain you can find, you need to chase out smooth, flowy singletrack where you can feel in complete control and really have fun. The front suspension will get overwhelmed by big hits, but on smoother trails it does a great job of muting out buzz and keeping you comfortable.

While this bike is passable for descending, the race geometry and nimble aluminum frame really shine on the uphills. It isn’t super light, which is to be expected for the price, but still is quite lightweight for an entry-level bike. When you hit steep climbs, you’ll find yourself impressed at how eagerly this bike pedals up and over obstacles.

The aluminum frame is lightweight, stiff, and does a great job at getting your power down to the ground. If you’re coming from a heavier, older mountain bike, you’ll definitely

Trek X-Caliber 6 Frame and Geometry

The Trek X-Caliber 6 is built around a nimble aluminum frame with mechanically formed butted tubing. This frame is plenty stiff and strong for most trail riding, and the light weight will help you out on the uphills.

For an inexpensive entry-level bike, this frame has a surprising amount of modern features. Internal front derailleur routing keeps it looking clean and streamlined. Race geometry makes it feel quick and maneuverable. It even has size-specific wheel clearance, with 27.5-inch wheels for XS and S, and 29-inch wheels for size M and above.

Specs and Components

With budget mountain bikes, it’s always a balancing act for manufacturers to spec components that perform well enough while still hitting a price point. Overall, I think Trek did a good job with the X-Caliber 6.

Here are some of the component highlights to give you an idea of the build spec.

The X-Caliber 6 comes equipped with a Sram X4 with an 11-34 cassette in the back and 44/32/22 chainrings.

This is definitely not the most advanced or modern drivetrain available, but it’s pretty on-par with what you should expect from an entry-level bike from 2015. If you are looking for an up-to-date bike, there are 1x drivetrains available in the same MSRP price range, but for an older bike, this is a decent drivetrain.

One benefit of the 3x9 setup is that you get more gear range than comparable 1x drivetrains. The low-end climbing gears aren’t as low as I’d like, but the 44-tooth high end chainring gives you great high gears for speed. This is especially nice if you’ll use this bike for pavement riding and commuting.

This bike is a hardtail, so you have no rear suspension here. For the type of riding this bike is designed for, that can actually be considered an advantage. Hardtails are naturally more efficient and better at putting your power down for climbing and pedaling.

On the front end you get a 100 mm travel Suntour SR XCM fork. This is definitely a budget fork, but it offers decent performance for most riding. As a coil spring fork, it will be significantly heavier than air-sprung forks, but that’s what you can expect from a bike at this price.

Overall, I think you’ll be pleased with the performance of this fork. It is relatively smooth, and the travel helps even out rough sections of trails.

Brakes are a common place for manufacturers to cut corners on budget bikes. It’s nice to see that the X-Caliber 6 comes with Shimano hydraulic disc brakes. If you are coming from mechanical brakes, you’ll be impressed by the awesome stopping power from these Shimano M355 brakes.

Many similar bikes come with cheaper mechanical disc brakes, so this is definitely a highlight of this build.

Wheels and Tires

The wheels on this bike are pretty standard Bontrager alloy rims and hubs. On size XS and S, you get 27.5-inch wheels, while size M and above come with 29-inch hoops.

These wheels come fitted with Bontrager XR1 tires. These are fast-rolling tires designed to emphasize efficiency and light weight over maximum grip. They still have decent side knobs for superior corner traction.

I wouldn’t count on these tires for ultimate grip in loose conditions, but they do a good enough job for most packed singletrack riding.

Competition for the Trek X-Caliber 6

The X-Caliber 6 fits into a crowded budget-mountain bike market. There are a lot of other options to choose from, so it’s important to know how it measures up to the competition.

The most important thing to note is that the Trek X-Caliber 6 was discontinued in 2015, replaced by the Marlin 6, so you won’t be able to find an X-Caliber for sale again. This will make a difference with the bikes we’re comparing it with, because they are newer and currently available for sale.

Trek Marlin 6

If you’re wanting to get a bike that’s similar to the X-Caliber 6 but in a more modern, updated package, the Trek Marlin 6 is the bike that replaced the X-Caliber 6 in Trek’s lineup.

These bikes share a lot of the same DNA with lightweight aluminum frames and cross country race-inspired geometry. They have similar spec’d forks, and brakes as well.

The biggest difference will appear in the drivetrain. While the X-Caliber 6 used an old-school 3x9 drivetrain, the Marlin 6 has a more modern setup with a Shimano Deore 1x10 speed drivetrain.

It really will come down to personal preference, but 1x10 drivetrains are the new industry standard for mountain bikes. If you are okay with older technology and design, you can probably find an X-Caliber used for a much lower price.

Trek X-Caliber 6 vs Giant Talon 2

Giant Talon 2

Giant is one of the most popular brands in the mountain biking world, and for good reason. Their business model enables them to offer seriously capable bikes at much lower prices than competitors.

The Giant Talon 2 competes directly with the X-Caliber 6 (or Marlin 6, nowadays) in the entry-level hardtail market, and there are a lot of similarities in geometry and components.

Again, the biggest difference is going to be the drivetrain. The Giant Talon 2 uses a Microshift Advent 1x9 setup compared to the X-Caliber’s 3x10. While this drivetrain doesn’t get as much publicity as products from Sram or Shimano, I’ve been very impressed with the Microshift Advent lineup.

This drivetrain is designed to be affordable, reliable, and durable. It offers the same gear range as Shimano’s 10-speed Deore, but with a thicker 9-speed chain and simplified adjustments.

With more aggressive geometry and sensible component selection, I think the Giant Talon 2 is definitely worth looking at if you are in the market for an entry-level bike.

Trek X-Caliber 6 vs Cannondale Trail 7

Cannondale Trail 7

The Cannondale Trail 7 is another popular bike that slots into a similar price bracket. As with most bikes in this market range, there are a lot of things that are similar, with just the small details making the difference.

This bike has basic hydraulic disc brakes, as coil-spring fork, and internal cable routing like the others compared here.

The Cannondale Trail 7 is a little behind the times with 2x8 shifting. Even the older X-Caliber gives you more range and better gear spacing with its 3x9 setup.

Overall, if you are looking for a budget hardtail bike, I think you’ll be better off with the Trek X-Caliber 6 than the Cannondale Trail 7.

Where to Buy the Trek X-Caliber 6

Unfortunately the Trek X-Caliber 6 is out of production and is no longer available to buy new. That said, it’s definitely worth looking around for a used one. Bicycle Blue Book estimates the value of a 2016 X-Caliber 6 at under $250, so you can get a great bike for not much money.

Trek X-Caliber 6 has always won everyone’s attention with its high efficiency, simplicity, and candor, and is known as the best choice for an off-road lap or leadership races.

It is hard to imagine that after such a long period of precipitation, X-Caliber 6 was taken out by us for a re-introduction.

Main Features

Trek X-Caliber 6 Frame

Trek has always been a leader in aluminum mountain bike frames and has developed three different aluminum constructions: Alpha Platinum Aluminum, Alpha Gold Aluminum, and Alpha Silver Aluminum. The X-Caliber 6 uses Alpha Gold Aluminum.

Alpha Gold Aluminum is a complex manufacturing process, the alloy consists of 6000 series aluminum, the pipes of which are reshaped and hydroformed before welding.

During this process, the thickness of the aluminum alloy tube body will change. Doing so reduces wall thickness where there is no load and strengthens the frame where the pipe is most loaded.

The result is an aluminum frame with lower weight, greater strength, and reliability. When it is used to form a mountain bike frame it means that the X-Caliber 6 is lightweight and durable.

G2 Geometry

G2 Geometry is Trek’s frame geometry for the poor handling of the 29er.

The X-Caliber 6 uses G2 geometry, and no corresponding data can be found for the front fork used.

But I think that the front fork is specially used with the frame of G2 geometry, which means that no matter if you have any dissatisfaction with the front fork, you can’t change it at will, otherwise the handling feeling will also be replaced.

The X-Caliber 6’s advanced frame geometry and custom offset fork ensure precise handling of the 29ers at low speeds without compromising stability at high speeds.

Shifter & Front and Rear Derailleurs

The X-Caliber 6 shifter uses SRAM X4, 9 speed, and the front and rear derailleurs use SRAM X4.

The precision and shift feel of the X-Caliber 6 SRAM X4 shifter is not only reflected in the name X4.

The highlight lies in the matching SRAM X4 front and rear derailleurs, which operate smoothly in the case of the urgent need for shifting, and the shifting is smooth.

The SRAM X4 9-speed Trigger Shifter is a reliable and budget-friendly component that keeps working quickly even in the toughest riding conditions.

Trek X Caliber 6 is ideal for models fitted with SRAM X4 parts.

The SRAM X4, 9-speed shift dial window is designed on the top of the handlebar, which has no visual impact. The position of the window has avoided the oil tank on the hydraulic brake lever. In theory, it can support any brand of hydraulic brakes.

Because the SRAM X4 shifting system is entry-level, its shift paddle stroke is relatively large, and the speed of continuous up and down shifts is not very fast, but it is enough to meet our daily riding needs.

My self-perception is that the X-Caliber 6 is paired with an SRAM X4, a 9-speed shifter, and an SRAM X4 front and rear derailleur. The gears are clear and tough and the hand feel is clear during riding.

The X-Caliber 6 cranks are Shimano M371, 44/32/22. Shimano M371, 44/32/22 cranks are compatible with 3×9 speed drivetrains.

Shimano M371 cranks feel good in terms of stiffness, durability, and lubricity. How should we rate the Shimano M371 crank?

It’s stiff enough to improve performance with each product update.

Although it is not the current mainstream single-disc drive, there is absolutely no problem in function, but it does not feel as smooth as SRAM.

The price of the Shimano M371 is acceptable.

The X-Caliber 6 pedals feature Wellgo nylon pedals.

The Wellgo nylon platform uses a nylon body, and the treading area is very large.

Integrated cleats on the outer frame provide enough “foot grip” without scratching the customer.

There are also several colors to choose from.

Although its material is not very good, I believe that it is not easy to break it.

The X-Caliber 6 uses a 1-1/8″ threadless, semi-integrated head tube.

The semi-integrated headset has the bearing part built into the head tube, and only a thin ring of the gasket-like body is exposed after installation.

The head parts may be an overlooked component on many bikes, but it plays a vital role. It’s the part that lets you steer the bike and hold the fork in place.

The X-Caliber 6 uses a 1-1/8″ threadless, semi-integrated head tube, the downside is that it uses a larger diameter tube to increase the stiffness of the frame in this area.

Cable Routing

The X-Caliber 6 frame cable uses an internal routing method.

The front and rear shifting cables and rear brake hoses of the whole vehicle are introduced into the frame from the handlebar.

Therefore, the overall appearance of the X-Caliber 6 is simple and beautiful, with both appearance and performance.

Strong practicability, not easy to get dust. Low wind resistance. But the disadvantage is that maintenance is not easy.

X-Caliber 6 brakes use Shimano M355 hydraulic disc brakes.

In terms of technology, it has been upgraded. Compared with the old model, the new brake looks more powerful, and the improved brake lever and oil circuit sets are convenient for daily maintenance.

Compared with ordinary mechanical wire-pulled disc brakes, hydraulic disc brakes do not have the problem of frictional resistance between the inner brake wire and the wire tube, the feel is clearer and more direct, and the braking performance is more stable.

Plus, it’s easy to set up and adjust and reduces assembly time after the customer receives the X-Caliber 6.

The suitable brake lever shape of Shimano M355 during X-Caliber 6 riding is especially suitable for users to operate with two or three fingers, and it is easy to control.

Generally speaking, the brakes are black. This Shimano M355 also has a white version, which is suitable for customers who like to modify.

Wheels

X-Caliber 6 rims in Size: S, M, M/L, L, XL, Bontrager Kovee, double-wall, Tubeless Ready, 28-hole, 23mm width, Presta valve.

The Bontrager Kovee 29er for the X-Caliber 6 has always been one of my all-time favorite wheels, I’ve had it for 3 years, it’s a pair that does the heavy lifting, no breakage, almost no flats (tubeless set up).

It has an inner width of 23 mm and a weight of around 1600 grams.

The Bontrager Kovee rims used on the X-Caliber 6 allow for a quick upgrade to tubeless and is paired with 14 G stainless steel spokes.

Thanks to the wider and deeper X-Caliber 6 rims, along with the flat spokes, this wheelset feels even lighter.

They really have to make each spoke sing the same melody because of the same tension.

The X-Caliber 6 uses Formula DC hubs, with silky smooth bearings, a mid-lock structure, and planetary gears for quick engagement, which are lightweight and durable.

The front hub is Formula DC-20, alloy, 6-bolt, 100mm ThruSkew.

The rear hub is Formula DC-2241, alloy, 6-bolt, Shimano 8/9/10 freehub, Boost141, 5mm QR.

The X-Caliber 6 uses Bontrager XR1 tires. With a 29-inch wheel diameter coupled with a 2.20 tire width, there is no reason not to grip the ground.

The tire surface particles are more dispersed and it is better suited for riding on dirt roads.

In the familiar test route, the wheelset provided good feedback, cornered well, and could easily handle some small bounces.

X-Caliber 6 Spece

1. How much does it weigh?

It weighs about 14 kg (31-32 lbs).

2. Is it possible to use a mountain bike on city streets?

Yes, Trek X-Caliber 6 can be used on city roads.

3. What does a suspension do?

As a result of the suspension, the rider experiences a smoother, more controlled ride, a result of dampening the terrain’s roughness. When riding on rocky singletracks or potholed roads, a bike suspension improves control, traction, and comfort.

The Diamondback Hatch 2 is in the mid-price range of the Hatch series.

Compared to the X-Caliber 6, the Diamondback Hatch 2 has the advantage of climbing steeper hills more easily.

However, in the descending and sprinting stages, the X-Caliber 6 has a more pronounced advantage.

All this is the result of our testers’ tests and calculations based on the respective drivetrains.

Unlike X-Caliber 6, which uses Alpha Gold Aluminum, Diamondback Hatch 2 frame uses AL-6061, an Al-Mg-Si alloy with medium strength, good plasticity, and excellent corrosion resistance.

In addition, Diamondback adopts aluminum alloy heat treatment technology, after quenching, AL-6061 plasticity does not decrease, but increases.

In terms of the groupset, the Diamondback Hatch 2 features RD-TY300 rear derailleur and TY500 front derailleur and is compatible with Shimano MFTZ500 14-28 Tooth Freewheel high-speed gears.

Our testers were impressed with the Diamondback Hatch 2’s excellent shifting performance during the ride, ensuring a safe and stable ride.

During our testing, we found that the X-Caliber 6 SRAM X4 shifter shifts very smoothly and quickly, and stops most chain slap on rough terrain because it maintains more “tension” on the chain.

One thing to note is that as Sram says in their description of the transmission – you need to pair it with an SRAM shifter – the transmission has a 1-to-1 ratio, most Shimano rear derailleurs have a 2 to 1 ratio and the shifter is not compatible.

With energy and environmental issues becoming the focus of human attention, mountain bike lightweight has become the “new fashion” of energy saving and emission reduction in the bicycle industry.

As for the technical research of “lightweight” mountain bike parts and materials, it has become an important direction for Trek manufacturers.

Both X-Caliber 8 and X-Caliber 6 are made of aluminum frames, which is comparable even when compared with the top carbon frame.

However, in terms of comfort, the aluminum frame does not have the natural advantage of carbon fiber in filtering vibration.

The X-Caliber 8 uses the XT, Deore Groupset, while the X-Caliber 6 uses the X4, Shimano. In the eyes of our testers, the XT, Deore Groupset outperformed the X4, Shimano Groupset.

X-Caliber 8 uses Shimano Deore M6100, 12 speed for the finger paddle, cassette, and chain.

The Deore 12 speed chain and flywheel use Shimano Hyperglide+ technology for better upshifting and downshifting performance, which is significantly improved when shifting to larger gear ratios, and the shifting is almost seamless.

This is the most interesting aspect of the Shimano 12 speed, which is very smooth even when shifting violently.

The X-Caliber 8 is then paired with a Shimano XT M8100 rear derailleur that is simply unbeatable.

While the new XT rear derailleur uses the XTR design, Shimano claims that the new design can support a massive 51T flywheel, and they both offer an adjustable clutch locking structure for added chain safety in rough terrain.

Also, the size of the guide wheel has been increased to 13T to provide a smoother and quieter operation.

Trek X-Caliber 9 vs Trek X Caliber 6

Trek X-Caliber 9

The X-Caliber 9 uses the 1x 12, while the X-Caliber 6 still uses the previous 3 X 9, which is a common Groupset on entry-level bikes.

With the continuous development and maturity of the Dropper, the elevated seat tube has also gained great popularity.

The X-Caliber 9 uses a lift seat tube, so our testers do not have to get off the bike and break the quick release or unscrew the seat post clamp to tediously adjust the seat height.

The seat height can be adjusted by simply manipulating the controller to achieve the effect of high pedaling efficiency uphill and large moving space downhill. But in X-Caliber 6 did not see the presence of a dropper, or Rigid Seatpost is used.

As mentioned earlier, the X-Caliber 6 has a G2 geometry aluminum frame, which is an attractive feature of the X-Caliber 6, although the X-Caliber 9 also has an aluminum frame.

The X-Caliber 9 saddle has been upgraded with Bontrager Arvada, steel rails, and 138mm width. We can see it on both the Marlin 5 and 520 Grando.

The X-Caliber 6 saddle also uses this saddle, but it has a slightly narrower width than the X-Caliber 9.

Our testers still felt that the X-Caliber 9 saddle was more comfortable to sit on during the ride.

1×12 Shimano XT/SLX is the drivetrain adopted by X-Caliber 9. Shimano released the SLX M7100 kit to counter SRAM’s increasingly powerful 12-speed Eagle components.

Each SLX M7100 mountain bike kit is almost identical to the XT. The most obvious thing is that the materials and finishes allow for a lower price. However, the SLX doesn’t have much of an increase in weight as a result.

During the evaluation

The testers found that the X-Caliber 9 Shimano SLX fingerpads do not have a multi-release or instant release function, so only one gear can be released at a time and the rear paddle will only start moving when it is released.

Giant Talon 1

State-of-the-art materials, forming methods, and welding techniques are used to create best-in-class aluminum frame technology. ALUXX-Grade Aluminum offers the best strength-to-weight ratio in the Giant Talon 1 aluminum bike.

Giant presses the tubes through hydroforming (injection of high-pressure liquid) and direct mechanical pressure to obtain very tight tolerances, followed by smooth double-pass welding and hand polishing, so the Giant Talon 1 has a strong and very light frame.

With its 30.9mm seat tube diameter and clean internal cable routing, the Giant Talon 1 makes it easy to upgrade the Dropper. it appears that the X-Caliber 6 can’t do it yet.

The shifter and rear brake cables run from inside the integrated port near the head tube to an exit under the bottom bracket. From the outside, the Giant Talon 1 looks excellent and is weatherproof. The X-Caliber 6 has relatively more exposed alignment than the Giant Talon 1.

This Giant Talon 1 uses the Shimano Deore M4100 series finger paddles and cassette flywheel. The overall impression to our testers was the compact design and lightweight. With its ergonomic design and lightweight construction, the Shimano DEORE SL-M4100 10-speed Rapidfire Plus shift lever is built for performance. In addition to shifting behavior, performance has improved by 20%. With 35 % less force and a 20% shorter lever access time.

Final Evaluation

As a veteran of the Trek X-Caliber series, the X-Caliber 6 has done a lot to prepare the ground for subsequent models. The performance advantage is enough for us to handle daily trail riding. There’s no denying our love for it.

Trek Procaliber 6 frame

The IsoSpeed system uses a small pivot to ‘decouple’ the seat tube and top tube, allowing them to articulate back and forwards independently. The bottom of the dramatically offset asymmetric seat tube is also almost completely flattened to form a leaf spring segment, to help soften blows from the trail.

Other distinctive frame details include the ‘waist’ on the head tube and the extensively shaped and tapered top tube.

There’s a cable port for a Shimano side-swing front mech in case you want to swap the single chainring for a double, plus two mounting stubs that’ll also work for a chain guide.

A seat-tube exit hole and ‘spare’ internal down-tube routing allow you to upgrade to a stealth dropper, and the 31.6mm seat tube diameter gives you a full choice of posts, compared to the limited options available in 27.2mm.

You get mounts for two bottle-cages too. The rear stays have no braces, to give max mud clearance. They end at neat Boost-width dropouts for a through-axle (with a QR lever on the end, for tool-free wheel removal/insertion), with a brake mount that bridges between the stays.

Despite its complex frame and low price, the Procal 6 has a good spec. The Judy Gold is smooth, well-controlled and relatively light, thanks to its full-alloy construction.

It has a through-axle for accurate tracking and a shifter-style ‘OneLoc’ remote lockout. The only downside is the plastic ‘flag’ adjuster that makes rebound adjustment crude.

Drive is provided by a full SRAM NX Eagle set-up, with an oversized DUB axle rotating in broad-spaced press-fit bearings, which maximise stiffness but can be a pain to service.

The XG-1230 cassette is heavy in weight and feel compared to Shimano, but the shifting through the 11-50t gear range is simplicity itself and gives great drive efficiency.

Brakes are the basic but utterly dependable Shimano MT400s. The rest of the kit is Bontrager, including the distinctively backswept bar.

That bar makes a huge difference. By sweeping your hands further back, it mimics the effect of a shorter stem, so the 90mm unit feels more like 60-70mm.

As a result, the Trek feels twitchier and lighter, and there’s less weight on the front tyre. That’s compounded by an unusually slack seat tube, which also shifts your weight backward. This is handy for popping the wheel up over obstacles or off drops, but makes the front end more ‘fussy’ in terms of wandering about and losing the line, particularly on climbs.

As for the IsoSpeed system, it definitely, visibly works. If you hit a big lump, the seat tube bulges forward and the post sways back to help you ride out the blow. That’s useful if you get caught in the saddle by a big wallop, but most of the time you’ll be up and on the pedals anyway.

The shock-absorbing advantage while you’re powering a seated gear is also tempered by obvious rebound bounce, which can continue distractingly long after the initial impact. It takes a lot to get it moving too.

Bontrager’s X2 tyres are slower and less forgiving than their looks suggest — the ride was noticeably quicker and smoother when I swapped in the Chisel’s wheels.

The Trek still gets power down firmly though, without being as bruising as the Cube, and the accurate-tracking frame and quality fork mean you can drive the front end hard, once you’re used to the bar. Dropper compatibility and the ability to fit fatter tyres give the Procal 6 more aggressive-terrain potential too.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

You fly for hours, anticipating your arrival, wanting to take in the area and the views of another country far away from your departure airport. The airport and the area you leave from is detailed and visually full, and you know you have a great airport scenery waiting for you at the other end of the flight, then when you arrive...

...  Nothing, but flat plain emptiness and the same boring standard X-Plane basic scenery, worse there is no OSM (Open Street Map) data in the tile either, so there is no road or autogen detailing in there as well, just well nothing.

When Drzewiecki Design released their UUEE Sheremetyevo Airport XP , I loved it because it was like a visitor from the Cold War past, the Soviet era, and it was also great scenery and great choice of a destination to fly to from any of the capitals of Europe...  but that was it, just this great airport in the middle of nothingness, bland....   zero ville.

Now Drzewiecki Design has released "Moscow City"  a scenery package to compliment their UUEE Sheremetyevo, and boy how much a difference this release has done to this totally boring area.

To get the full first impression effect I flew JARDesign's A320neo from EFHK Vatnaa, Helsinki to UUEE Sheremetyevo which is flight Finnair AY153 which is a daily 9.25am service.

First Impressions

I was surprised to start picking up scenery still quite away out from central Moscow, as I approached my 6000ft transition altitude. Here there was buildings and houses and the physical visual notes you were arriving somewhere.

Looking hard at the horizon through the A320's windows and you could see the iconic silhouette of Moscow city.

The scenery provides lite versions of all Moscow's Airports, this is UUWW Vnukovo, which was easily recognisable as you flew over. As you fly closer to the centre of the city the density of the objects below becomes quite heavy as the landscape fills in. You have all kinds of infrastructure including, blocks of flats, tower blocks, factories, housing, skyscrapers and almost everything that makes up an urban landscape, in all there is 2000 custom-made buildings that makes up this impressive scenery.

A note here in that you don't get that rolling as you move feeling effect where as it just suddenly appears in front of you and then quickly disappears behind as soon as you have flown out over the area. There is a slight effect of that as there has to be, but only in the far distance and as you can see from the images the views in every direction are widespread and visually it is very good to excellent.

The "Seven Sisters" or "Stalinist skyscrapers" built from 1947 to 1953 are all in the scenery with their "Wedding Cake" architecture or officially  Russian Baroque               - Gothic style. Most famous is the Moscow State University, front and centre of the image below.

Central Moscow is excellent and extremely realistic, and you really need a travel guide to pick out the landmarks and detail, but it is hard to miss the Red Kremlin complex  and St Peter's square from the air.  Both sides of the aircraft is visually full until you have crossed right over the city.

I am not a fan of the generated 3d OSM scenery, but this is very good in blending in perfectly with the X-Plane default scenery and giving you a smooth transition from country to urban and back again with great realism.

Over the city and turning north towards Sheremetyevo, another Moscow airport UUMU Chkalovsky is represented on the turn.

The city skyline is now easily visible on landing at Sheremetyevo, and that really helps in the arrival factor, more so in that the cities building infrastructure spread now comes up and around the airport to fill the gaps to the city itself, and making the original  Sheremetyevo scenery that was so open and lonely in the old X-Plane view is now a big part of the whole in this combination. No doubt it really brings this always good scenery now alive and very usable.

Sheremetyevo Airport

Before we move on to the city itself. It is important to note the area around UUEE Sheremetyevo itself.

Compare the large image above to the earlier image at the start of this review to see the amount of change there is around UUEE Sheremetyevo with the addition of this Moscow City package. The two sceneries are of course meant to be used together, and in reality it would look odd if you had Moscow City scenery installed without the Sheremetyevo scenery included to fill out the northern areas. A highlight is that both sceneries together form a single whole, as the areas between the airport and the central city area are well filled in and that gives you a huge area of coverage and the full visual aspect.

To get a closer lower look at the Moscow Center I commandeered Dreamfoil's lovely Bell 407.

There is a 4.000km² total area covered with this scenery here, and you have expect some sort of building replication to cover all that ground. There is of course but as well in the fact there is also enough variations as to not keep it all interesting and not obviously visually obvious.

The closer you go to the central area, the variations in the buildings change there in style and density as well. And then more of the iconic buildings start to appear as you get closer in again to the middle. The business district is excellent, with a lot of business towers and the more modern futuristic skyscraper architecture that stands out in every view point in eye scans across the city.

The more recent is in tune with the more older Stalinist era that makes up the Moscow skyline.

The Kremlin Complex and the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed (St Basil's) is excellently represented and so is "Red Square"

There are Orthodox churches everywhere and all the big icons in the Moscow Cathedral Mosque, Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Grand Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium, Otkrytive Arena and department stores, museums and power stations and more....

I did have issues with many buildings floating, including the Kremlin. I tried both "Runways follow terrain contours" on and off with no flattening of the objects and there is no information in the manual either on how to fix the problem.

Night lighting is very good, yes there is again a repeatable pattern to the majority of the hundreds of the apartment blocks that does stand out, but the more individual buildings do all have that personal touch and some buildings look really very good.

The highlight here is the business district which looks magnificent and is very realistic from any direction at night as is the lit Stadium.

Although away from the central area the Ostankino Tower that stands 540.1 metres (1,772 ft) tall, and is the tallest freestanding structure in Europe and it looks great at night and is a very good position indicator from the air from any direction.

Included Moscow Airports

As noted also included in the scenery are seven airports and several helipads.

UUWW Vnukovo

The futuristic Vnukovo International is very good for a lite version, with great terminals and lots of small detailing. Only thing missing is the static aircraft and a bit more ramp equipment, but otherwise it is highly usable.

UUDD Domodedovo

The oldest of Moscow's International airports is Domodedovo. Again it is quite devoid of static aircraft and I am not crazy about the blue terminal glass work, but it is still a very workable scenery to use and has a lot of well made objects.

UUBW Zhukovsky

Zhukovsky was a major aircraft testing facility since the  cold war years, with most of the major Russian Experimental Design Bureau's having facilities here. It is also now used by the Ministry of Emergency Situations! and cargo carriers. It was also used as a test site for the Soviet Buran  reusable Spacecraft because it has the world's second longest pubic runway at at 5,402 m (17,723 ft). Mostly it is a collection of very large hangars but has a lot of static aircraft in storage.

UUMO Ostafyevo International Business Airport

A former military airbase. Ostafyevo features a new modern glass terminal, and caters primarily to business aviation.

Chkalovsky is a military logistics airport that is famous for it's support for the Russian Space program and transport to Star City and the Yuri A. Gagarin State Scientific Research-and-Testing Cosmonaut Training Center. Yuri Gagarin left here on his final flight before crashing by the town of Kirzhach.

UUBM Myachkovo Airport

Myachkovo is a small General Aviation Airport that is owned by the Finpromko company. Cargo aircraft up to the size of the Ilyushin ll-76 freighter can also use the airport.

Kubinka has been a significant Russian military airbase and large airshows are held here to show off the Russian military might.

There is also provided UUU1 Kremlin Airport, within the Kremlin walls, but I couldn't get it to work? There are two pads in H1 and H2.

Your first thoughts after reviewing this excellent Moscow scenery is not with this actual package. You then wish that you could have this extensive scenery at London, Rome, Madrid, Berlin and the list could go on with any of your favorite European Cities, and don't count a load in the Middle East and Asia. But a London scenery like this would certainly be a godsend in our X-Plane world. Drzewiecki Design has already done Warsaw and Manhattan, so there is always hope.

It is not cheap either and you need to add in their UUEE Sheremetyevo scenery package on top of that as well. But you get an awful lot of ground covered here for your money, with the area covered here that is extensive...  huge and flying into Moscow will never be the same again.

A few areas to note in one that in my case a few of the buildings floated, the download is huge load at 1.4gb and this Russian area is not the best for navigation aids and programming FMS units as most waypoints are not recognised. Most of the airports ILS coordinates also have to checked and recalibrated (Drzewiecki Design do provide all the correct coordinates) so there is a little work to do to set up repeat services but the work is worth the results.

Not only is the actual Moscow city and all it's buildings supported, you also get seven (if lite versions) of Moscow's other airports included as well, but the framerate processing of all this huge amount of objects and scale is pretty good to excellent. Framerate does hurt more on a lower (helicopter) level and certainly you need a computer with a little extra power is in no doubt required, but overall for the size of the area the scenery is extremely efficient.

Yes I was impressed by this Moscow City Scenery, as this once very barren area of X-Plane is now a very attractive repeat destination as nothing can give you a greater fulfilment than seeing your destination appear in the distance and then give you a huge visual experience as you fly over and approach your destination.

Moscow City certainly delivers that and more...  Just more sceneries like this please!

Thank you for this very thorough (as always) review. I just bought it (it's on sale) and have only one disappointment so far: Red Square has no ILS or any landing aids at all for that matter. And what a nightmare of an approach! Also I was hoping the package would include an add-on that gives my c172 a big cup holder for my Stoli. Otherwise the scenery is gorgeous. What a country!
