At the helm of Capri Island Tour is Antonello Palmieri, a Capri native who has always had a passion for boats and the sea. His goal, along with his team, is to make sure guests have fun and create their best memories of Capri!

Interview with Antonello Palmieri, Founder of Capri Island Tour

Here are a few snapshots of Capri Island Tour guests, whose smiles are the best descriptions of our tours!

Where do Capri boat tours depart?

Our boat tours depart from the port of Marina Grande on Capri. The meeting point is next to the pier where ferries from Sorrento and Naples dock. You can easily take the ferry to Capri, hop on board our boat for a tour, and then spend the rest of your day visiting the island by land. Another option is to take our boat tour later in the day before catching the ferry back to the mainland, which is a great way to end your day trip to the island.

Are the tours private?

Yes. All Capri Island Tours mini-cruises are private, so you have the entire boat and an expert skipper to yourself. It's a great option for a romantic sail for two!

Are dogs allowed on board?

Yes, we happily accept dogs on board. All our boats have a sun awning so your pet can stay safely out of the sun.

Is there a restroom on board?

Our larger gozzo boats have a covered cabin and restroom, while our smaller gozzo boats (which we use for short boat tours) do not. There is a restroom at our meeting point where our guests can get changed or freshen up before or after the tour.

Motoscafisti Capri, Italy - skippers since 1955

For more than half a century, Motoscafisti di Capri has been the number 1 choice for boat excursions around the Island of Capri.

The Blue Grotto, the Faraglioni, the lighthouse: no trip to Capri, Italy can be considered complete without having first sailed around the island. The best and safest way to enjoy a trip on the sea surrounding Capri is to sail with the island's leading boat company, the oldest and most experienced in the business: the Motoscafisti di Capri!

Ferrying services

We are the only company on Capri authorized to provide ferrying services.

Since 1955, we have been transporting passengers, luggage, and merchandise to and from ships anchored within the port area of Capri. An exclusive ferrying service which testifies to our professionalism and guarantees the safety of all passengers.

A tale of the sea

In 1826, a fisherman from Marina Grande accompanied the German painter August Kopisch to the Blue Grotto, which, at the time, was known only to the islanders. From that moment on, news of the extraordinary beauty of the sea cave began to spread around the world and more and more visitors coming to Capri asked to see the Blue Grotto and sail around the island by boat.

In 1955, the fishermen of Capri who organized these trips decided to found a company, which would enable them to offer a truly professional service to customers. Thus Motoscafisti di Capri was born.

Our skippers

All our skippers speak English; many speak French and Spanish, as well. They are all native to Capri, and are available for anything you may need during your sail.

Our boats are insured to cover damages to people, property, and animals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blue grotto, does the ticket include entrance to the blue grotto.

No, even though some boat companies state the contrary, you will have to pay to enter the Blue Grotto separately, at the entrance to the cave. The Blue Grotto is a state-owned cultural property.

When is the Blue Grotto open to the public?

The Blue Grotto is open from 09.00 to 17.00, sea and general weather conditions permitting. Visitors enter the Grotto via a 1 meter high cavity: in rough or high seas, it is impossible to access the cave.

Is the Blue Grotto open in the winter?

Yes, when sea conditions are favorable, the Grotto is open in winter too.

Can you swim inside the Blue Grotto?

During the day, the steady procession of boats going in and out of the cave makes swimming impossible. When the Blue Grotto is closed, entry is prohibited.

How long does the trip to the Blue Grotto take?

The journey from Marina Grande, the visit to the cave, and return, will take about an hour.

Trip around the island

How long does the trip around the island take.

The trip all the way around the island takes about 2 hours and includes the stop at the Blue Grotto.

Is the visit of the Blue Grotto obligatory?

The boat will stop to allow those who want to visit the sea cave to do so. If you don't want to go inside the Grotto, you are welcome to stay on board!

No, you will have to pay to see the Grotto at the entrance of the cave (see response to question above).

Do you offer other trips too?

Yes, we also organize trips sailing around the Faraglioni, departing from Marina Grande and arriving at the Siren's rock, where you can take a photo of the sea with the Faraglioni in the background.

Do you offer discounted rates for groups?

Yes, contact us for a quote.

Private excursions

Do you rent boats without crew.

No, we only rent boats manned by a skipper.

Is it possible to fish from the boat?

Yes, but we'll need to know beforehand so that we can reserve the right type of craft. If you want to organize a fishing trip, let us know in advance!

Can I take a shower on the boat?

Yes, all of the boats used for private excursions are equipped with soft water shower.

I'm in Capri but I haven't got any of the things I need for a day at sea, can you help?

No problem, on request we will get you anything and everything you need: swimming costumes, beach towels, face masks and flippers etc...

Do you have children's life jackets?

Of course: all our boats are equipped with life jackets for both adults and children. In addition, all our passengers are covered by our company insurance.

Transfers and charters

Do you do night-time transfers.

Yes, we are often asked to provide nocturnal transportation for customers going to a party, discotheque, or attending an important evening event. The time you go and the time you come back are entirely up to you!

I need to organize a transfer for more than 150 people. Is that possible?

For groups which exceed 150 passengers, we can organize a transfer using more than one boat. We often provide such a service for wedding parties, when the bride and groom travel on their own private boat and their guests sail on boats behind them, forming a floating procession.

Is there room on your boats for large suitcases?

Yes, when you book your transfer let us know just how many suitcases you intend to bring and we will book a suitable boat for you.

15 Best Capri Tours

Featuring nearly a dozen historic churches, abundant monuments to religious and historical figures, and some of the most amazing scenery anywhere in Italy, the island of Capri is a must-see attraction for those visiting the southern Mediterranean region.

Capri is located along the south-central portion of the country’s coastline on the Tyrrhenian Sea and is easily accessible after a short ferry or boat ride from the mainland.

It has been a popular resort area since the Roman-era, and its major attractions include the Blue Grotto, Roman ruins, and stunning postcard-like beaches.

Below are 15 of the best tours of Capri.

1. 2-Hour Boat Tour with Happy Hour

Capri

Because it’s an island, guided boat tours are the easiest and most popular ways to experience all that Capri has to offer.

This two-hour option with a happy hour is perfect for those working with limited time. The fact that it includes alcohol is a big bonus for energetic revelers looking to take a break from their stressful lives.

Despite its relatively short duration, the tour hits a number of island hotspots, including the Sorrentine Peninsula, Arco Naturale, Punta Carena Lighthouse, and White and Green grottos.

In addition to narration from the captain, guests will have ample free time to swim, snorkel, sunbathe, and enjoy happy hour in the shade.

2. Capri Island Tour with Lunch

Punta Carena Lighthouse

The seaport in Naples is the starting point for many boat tours to the island of Capri.

The journey by ferry takes about an hour. Upon arrival, guests will board a smaller tour boat and set out to explore the coastline.

The tour’s main attractions include Green and White grottos, the Natural Arch, and Punta Carena Lighthouse.

After the boat portion of the tour, guests will be driven to Anacapri, where they’ll enjoy both guided and free time to explore the boutique shops and historical attractions, as well as a traditional three-course Italian lunch and drinks.

3. Full-Day Walking Tour of Capri with a Private Guide

capri walking

Walking tours are great options for those who want to experience Capri more intimately than they would from the deck of an offshore tour boat.

This full-day, guided walking tour is limited to ten guests, which ensures everyone has a truly personalized and memorable experience.

After visiting Capri’s pier and seeing some of the island’s main attractions, participants will have several options from which to choose.

They include visiting the island’s varied grottos, taking a fun and scenic trip on a cable car, or just relaxing in Anacapri and enjoying the scenery with an espresso, limoncello, or glass of local wine.

4. Small-Group Capri and Blue Grotto Boat Tour from Sorrento

Blue Grotto Boat

After pick-up from your Sorrento hotel, tour guests will be driven to the port and, from there, depart for Capri.

The vistas between Sorrento and Capri are nothing short of breathtaking. While en route, guests will learn about the things they see, like the historic fishing village of Marina Grande and the Roman ruins near Bagni della Regina Giovanna.

Tours are limited to just seven passengers, making them great options for families and couples looking to meet locals and other international travelers.

Additional highlights include the White, Green, and Blue grottos, the Faraglioni Rocks, and Punta Carena Lighthouse.

5. Under 30s Boat Trip to Capri from Sorrento

Sorrento

For young-ish travelers looking to whoop it up without being bothered by stodgy old tourists with funny cameras and fanny packs, this under 30 boat trip would be a great way to spend a day.

Things get underway from a central Sorrento location. Once on the water, there’s a palpable party atmosphere that includes ample drinking and other raucous revelry.

Tours also include fantastic views of island highlights like the White and Green grottos, Arco di Naturale, and Casa Malaparte.

Snorkeling, swimming, sunbathing, and sneaking peeks at attractive tour guests in skimpy bathing suits are also popular activities.

6. Sea and City Sightseeing Boat Tour from Naples

Mount Vesuvius

Crossing the Gulf of Naples on the way to the island of Capri is an incredible experience that features some of the Italian coast’s most impressive views, like that of Mount Vesuvius.

Upon reaching the island, guests will visit grottos and have unobstructed views of the island’s impressive lighthouse, ancient Roman ruins, and natural attractions like Arco di Naturale.

Along the way, you’ll hear the histories of the things you’re seeing. Tours also include hours of free time in which guests can explore the island on foot before it’s time to head back to the mainland just after 4:00.

7. All-Inclusive Day Trip to Capri from Sorrento

Anacapri’s Gardens of Augustus

For many travelers intent on fun and relaxation, worrying about pesky vacation details is an activity best left to tourism professionals.

If that sounds like you, this all-inclusive day trip to Capri may be a perfect option.

Tours begin with a brief meet and greet between guide and guests, after which everyone will be whisked from Sorrento to Capri onboard an impressive hydrofoil.

The tour’s first order of business is a one-hour cruise around Capri to see the island’s most iconic sites.

Guests will also explore Anacapri’s Gardens of Augustus and enjoy a traditional lunch before departing for the return trip to Sorrento.

8. DIY Day Trip with Blue Grotto, Funicular, and Lunch

Mount Solaro

DIY tour packages are steadily gaining popularity among savvy travelers who prefer to spend their vacations doing exactly what they want, when they want.

The package includes a variety of activity and attraction options, as well as locked-in ticket prices and vouchers for things like visiting the island’s grottos, the town of Anacapri, and riding the funicular to Mount Solaro.

Tours don’t include the services of a guide or a set schedule, so guests can see and experience the things that interest them and ignore those that don’t.

Another popular activity is a traditional three-course lunch, and tickets are valid for three days.

9. Private Yacht Tour to Capri and Positano

Positano yacht

The Gulf of Naples between Sorrento and Capri is well-known for its majestic cliffs, otherworldly grottos, and mesmerizingly blue water.

This private yacht tour is a great small group activity for those who want to experience Capri like a high-roller.

Guests can expect to see panoramic views of Capri’s iconic attractions like the natural arch, Faraglioni Rocks, and Punta Carena Lighthouse.

Tours also include a stop at one of Positano’s most impressive beaches, where there will be time for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing on the boat’s ample deck before heading back to the mainland.

10. Capri Boat Tour with stop by the Blue Grotto

Port of Capri

For visitors who venture to Italy’s coastline, boat tours around the island of Capri tend to be one of the most memorable experiences of their trips.

Featuring coves, grottos, historic ruins, and impressive natural rock formations, the island is truly a sight to behold.

This tour begins at Marina Grande and includes stops at numerous caves around the island. At the Blue Grotto, guests can decide whether they’d like to purchase an entry ticket or just appreciate it from the outside.

Tours depart every 30 minutes from the Port of Capri between mid-morning and early afternoon, and spots are filled on a first-come-first-served basis.

11. Special tour of Capri with Private Convertible Coach

Anacapri

First-time visitors to Capri tend to notice that most of the island’s vehicles have had their tops removed.

These Capri-style roadsters are the perfect ways to see the island without feeling the confinement often associated with stuffy, overcrowded tour busses.

The tour’s first stop is the island town of Anacapri, where guests will hear their guide’s insights into the area’s history and culture while taking in attractions like the Piazetta and Agustus Garden.

Tours begin mid-morning, last about five hours, and may include a boat tour to the Blue Grotto, depending on available time and the prevailing weather conditions.

12. Capri Island and Blue Cave Private Boat Tour from Sorrento

Punta Campanella

Upon being collected at their Sorrento area hotel, guests of this Capri Island and Blue Cave tour will board a private boat and head into the Tyrrhenian Sea toward the coast’s premier attraction.

When within sight of Capri, guests will appreciate clear views of island attractions like Roman ruins, White, Green, and Blue grottos, and the marine park at Punta Campanella.

After the tour, the captain will find a quiet stretch of water where guests can swim, snorkel, or just relax with a cold drink and soak up some rays.

Tours include round-trip transportation to and from your Sorrento area hotel.

13. Guided Capri and Anacapri Experience

Villa of Curzio Malaparte

For those who prefer to sleep in and spend a leisurely morning dining and preparing for the day’s activities, this guided Capri and Anacapri tour would be a wise choice.

It starts mid-morning at Marina Grande in Capri when guests rendezvous with their guide and get an overview of the things they’ll see and do.

Tours last between four and six hours depending on the schedules and interests of the guests and include the island’s main attractions like the natural arch, the Villa of Curzio Malaparte, and Punta Carena Lighthouse.

Much of the day will be spent on your feet, so wear comfortable shoes.

14. Sorrento Coast and Capri Sea View Tour

Capri Sea

Departing from Sorrento’s port at 8:30, this coast and sea view tour affords guests the opportunity to see many of the area’s main features, like stunning views of Mount Vesuvius and both natural and humanmade attractions.

After an overview of the island’s hotspots, guests will have approximately six hours to do as they please.

For those unfamiliar with the island, there will be plenty of options; the captain and crew will assist with a list of things that most visitors choose to take advantage of.

Meals, entrance fees, and other personal expenses are the responsibility of each guest.

15. Tour of Capri with Lunch from Naples

Capri

Featuring idyllic sidewalk cafes, narrow streets, historic plazas, and an abundance of natural and historic attractions, the island of Capri is one of the area’s premier tourist destinations for good reason.

Unlike many tours that offer rigid itineraries, this one allows guests to choose the things that interest them while saving money on things that don’t.

Guests may choose to circumnavigate the island by boat, head inside the many-colored grottos, or just take a relaxing walk or sit out of the sun with a refreshing drink.

Is a private boat tour to capri island worth it.

Yes, aboslutely! Opting for a private boat tour in Capri means personalization and comfort. Guests can tailor their journey to their interests, whether it’s a leisurely cruise around the island, a romantic sunset tour, or an adventurous trip to nearby attractions like the Blue Grotto.

A private Capri boat tour gives you an option to tailor the itinerary based on personal preference. As a bonus, guests can avoid crowded public transportation and large groups.

Capri private boat tours also provide exclusive opportunity to discover hidden gems of the island, such as secret grottoes and private swimming spots, which remain inaccessible to larger group tours. The beauty of Capri can only be truly enjoyed by a private boat tour.

How long does the Capri private boat tour last?

The boat tour of Capri can last anywhere between 3 hours to full day (7-8 hours) depending on the tour you decide to take. It also depends on the tour’s starting point, whether it is Capri, Sorrento or Naples.

Factors to consider when choosing the right Capri boat tour

Pick-up point and your stay . Do you prefer a private boat tour from Amalfi, Sorrento, Positano or prefer to meet in Capri? Some boat tours also offer boat trips from Naples.

Duration of the tour . The private boat tours can last between 3 hours to 8 hours (fully day). If you are short on time, choose a 3-hour tour. If you prefer to check out all the main sights and spend time walking and exploring Capri in a single day, choose a full day tour.

Number of people in your group. The number of passengers vary by boat size. Smaller boats are perfect for families and smaller groups of less than 5 people. Larger boats can accommodate anywhere from 7 to 12 passengers.

Do I need to book Capri private boat tour in advance?

It’s recommended to book at least a few weeks to months in advance, especially during the high season (summer months), as Capri boat tours can get sold out quickly. I highly recommend booking the tour as early as possible.

Capri boat tour – the best way to spend a day in capri.

This article may contain compensated links. See our full disclosure here

Thinking of taking a Capri boat tour? Cruising around the isle of Capri is one of our life’s favorite experiences, so make sure that you do. Here’s what to expect.

As you tour Italy ‘s Amalfi coast your gaze inevitably rests on the island in the distance. It is the legendary island of Capri and it is best seen from the clear waters that lap its rocky shores. Without a doubt, of all the amazing things to do in Capri, the one thing you must experience is a boat tour around the island.

What's in this article

Capri, Italy

Highlights of a capri boat trip, capri island tour options, tips for your tour, what to do in capri in a day.

The isle of Capri is the stuff of legend and that is not a throwaway line. The Ancient Greeks spoke of Capri in the story of Ulysses. It was off the island’s craggy shores that Ulysses resisted the temptations of the Sirens, beautiful mythical creatures who lured sailors to their deaths with their enchanting voices.

Rising up out of the Bay of Naples, you feel Capri before you even arrive. And its presence stays with you forever. The island’s majestic peaks and rocky terrain contrast with the bluest sea you ever saw. Today Capri is the playground of the world’s rich and famous and it’s easy to see why.

The island has a captivating beauty that has to be seen with your own eyes.

You join your boat at Marina Grande if you are staying on the island or have arrived by ferry. Otherwise, a day trip to Capri that includes this tour is an easy option from Naples , Sorrento or other towns on the Amalfi Coast .

Either way, your skipper takes you anti-clockwise for your tour of the island. Make sure your camera is charged and you are looking your glamorous best, this is the place for a million photo opportunities.

Here are some of the highlights you can expect on your boat tour of Capri.

The iconic rock formations known as the Faraglioni , are some of the most enduring images of Capri. I gasped when our boat turned around the coast towards these monoliths towering in the distance. It’s such a spectacular sight.

As you approach your skipper will tell you with a wink that it is good luck to kiss your loved one as you pass through the middle of the Faraglione di Mezzo. And so, of course, you do!

Punta Carena

People have lived on Capri for thousands of years – even Roman Emperors. So you see man made beauties alongside the natural wonders. I loved this old stone bridge with the sea glistening beneath.

The Punta Carena lighthouse has been standing watch on the island’s south-west coast since 1866 and is said to be the best place to watch the sun set on the isle of Capri.

Emerald Grotto and White Grotto

No filters required on these photos! The sea is really that gorgeous turquoise color.

Apart from the famous Blue Grotto (more on that below), Capri has a White and Green grotto where the sea changes color reflecting the limestone in the rocky seabed and rock formations overhead.

The Blue Grotto

But did you see the Blue Grotto ? I hear you ask. No, sadly we did not. We saw the entrance which is that tiny opening beneath the shrine in the image above. Despite the sparkling seas, it was too rough for boats to enter. It’s a good idea to set your expectations that you may not be able to go and if you do manage to enter the cave, it’s a bonus.

I won’t lie. I was bitterly disappointed when I heard that the sea cave was not included in our tour.  But in the end, we chose not to visit the grotto . We enjoyed the other grottoes instead and enjoyed our time on the island.

Tours of the Blue Grotto are run separately from Marina Grande and you pick them up when you arrive on the island. It is not possible to prebook these tours.

Check our tips on visiting the grotto below – your visit is subject to the weather and tides so it’s not always possible to go inside anyway.

Capri boat tours are not created equally. There are pros and cons of choosing a boat cruise of the island and unsurprisingly it comes down to variables of price, tour length and quality of experience.

Sorrento to Capri day tour

We took a semi-private boat tour of Capri from Sorrento that suited our needs perfectly. We were picked up from our accommodation and transferred to a small harbour close to Sorrento. Our family of four joined 7 other people on a luxurious cruiser for the journey. The boat tour takes a maximum of 12 people and it was extremely comfortable.

You can sit at the back of the boat or do as we did and lounge on the front deck as your cruiser speeds towards Capri. The advantage of a small boat is immediately obvious as you approach the island. To get close to the grottoes and inlets your boat needs to be nimble. We managed to get close to all the highlights mentioned above and I even had a gorgeous kiss on the cheek from my son under the Faraglione di Mezzo!

Our skipper was a cheeky chap with lots of jokes and interesting pieces of information about the island. He was not only in charge of steering and quips but also managed to serve us some drinks and a delicious tomato and mozzarella panino each.

We docked at Marina Grande for four hours of exploring at leisure and then, with fresh winds whipping our hair and sun on our face, we cruised back to the mainland looking longingly at Capri behind us.

The tour lasted approximately 8 hours, so it’s a full day excursion. Other options included a stop for swimming and snorkelling (it was a bit cold for that when we visited) and a private bus tour to Anacapri which we did not take. There were wifi, towels, and snorkel gear on board.

With transfers both ways included in the €100 per person price, we thought the Capri small group boat tour  was great value > Check boat tour prices and book now

TIP: You can also book a fully private tour from Sorrento to Capri. This is worth considering if you have a large group or just want to enjoy the island on your own. > Click for more info and prices

Day tour from other spots on the Amalfi Coast and Naples

Similar day tours of Capri leave from towns along the Amalfi Coast and from Naples and Salerno.

If you want to take this option, do check on the size of the boat, time spent in Capri and number of people onboard.

Private Capri Island tour by traditional gozzo boat

For an intimate and perhaps the best boat tour of Capri, why not hire a traditional gozzo boat to transport you around the island. This looked to me to be the most romantic and classic way to explore Capri by water.

As you can see they are small vessels and may not suit those prone to seasickness or families (like us) with young children. I think teenagers would love it and especially enjoy jumping off the boat when the weather is warm. This option would also be great if you have a group of friends or family to share the cost

The gozzo boats take up to 6 passengers and can be hired at the port of Marina Grande or you can > check the prices and book here

Two hour island tour from Marina Grande Capri

If you are staying on Capri (how wonderful) or arriving by ferry from Sorrento or Naples, you can take a tour of the island leaving from Marina Grande. This two hour tour includes visiting the grottoes, stopping for a swim if the weather is fine and trying the local limoncello liqueur – it’s refreshing and delicious! > Check boat tour prices and book now

One hour island tour from Marina Grande

I would only take this option if you are on a very strict budget or have limited time. We saw several of these tours on the water and made the following observations:

  • The boats that take these tours are large and packed full of people all craning over each other to take photos
  • Cruise time is less than an hour so there is very little time to stop and enjoy the experience
  • It is impossible for these boats to reach some of the beautiful grottoes due to their size

You can buy tickets for these tours at the ferry terminals

Our day in Capri was one of my ultimate travel highlights. Here are some tips to make sure your day is as enjoyable as ours was:

  • take sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat to shield you from the sun
  • bring a bottle of water and a small snacks in case you get hungry
  • a light sweater or cardigan is useful for the journey home
  • a swim suit is a must if the weather is warm! Most tours provide towels but check in advance
  • make sure your camera and phone are charged and you have a spare battery or power pack – you will take a million photos

Lastly, have an idea of things that you want to see and do on the island before you go. Unless you are happy simply gazing at the views. And that is completely fine too! I have given you some ideas below.

LISTEN: Transport yourself to Capri by tuning into our podcast episode: Come Away to Capri

After our boat tour, we docked at Marina Grande and had four hours to explore the island at leisure. We took the funicular to the town of Capri, wandered its cobbled streets and marvelled at the panoramic views of the island from above.

After stopping for lunch in the chic Piazetta – visit the Pulalli wine bar (amazing) – we strolled a little further through the town and visited the Giardini di Augusto for incredible views of the island.

Just when we thought the views couldn’t get any better, we found the  Certosa di San Giacomo monastery where you can enjoy the surrounding beauty in relative solitude.

Our leisurely pace meant we didn’t have time to visit Anacapri or take the chairlift to Monte Solaro. They are both an absolute must for our return visit. I would also have loved to visit  Villa Jovis , the ruins of an ancient Roman palace built by Emperor Tiberius. And shopped for beautiful sandals at one of the many boutiques.

And of course, I would have loved to have seen the Blue Grotto

Tips for visiting Capri’s Blue Grotto

Are you intent on seeing the Blue Grotto?

Here are some tips on visiting Capri’s most famous attraction that we learned from the skipper on our boat

  • The best time to visit is between 09:00 am and 14:00pm when the light creates the most spectacular effects
  • How brilliant the blue of the grotto appears is in direct proportion to available sunlight. Therefore it will not be as alluring on an overcast day
  • You reach the Blue Grotto by boat from Marina Grande [cost €18 per person] or bus from Anacapri.
  • Opening times for the Blue Grotto are 09:00 am to 17:00 pm. In adverse weather conditions, the site is closed
  • Blue Grotto tours cost €14 [2023] for the rowboat and entry to the cave. There is no charge for children under 6 years. Tickets can be purchased at the grotto entrance
  • You enter the grotto in a small rowboat and must lie down flat to get through the entrance. You then spend 5 minutes in the cave enjoying the spectacular natural wonder
  • Queue times to enter the grotto can be well over an hour in peak season

A few hours is not nearly enough to explore the beautiful isle of Capri. But I just know I will return one day.

Day Trip to Capri from Sorrento

A day trip to the island of Capri is a must during your visit to Sorrento.

Day Trip to Capri from Sorrento

If you are visiting Sorrento during your vacation in Italy, you shouldn't skip a day trip to the island of Capri. Though there are a number of agencies which offer organized "all inclusive" tours, you can easily organize an excursion to Capri on your own.

Tips for your day trip from Sorrento to Capri:

Getting from Sorrento to Capri

How do I get to Capri from Sorrento? It's easy! Simply take one of the ferries which depart daily for Capri from Sorrento's port.

Ferries run frequently from April through October, but can be quite crowded with other day trippers. We suggest you buy a round trip ticket and reserve ahead of time to avoid the long lines, especially during the month of August.

Take a seat on the left side of the ferry for the best views of the coast between Sorrento and Punta Campanella.

Duration of trip between Capri - Sorrento : about 30 minutes

tours to capri italy

What is the difference between the high speed ferry and the ferry? Ferries and slow ferries are cheaper and slower than fast ferries. We recommend taking a ferry if you are on a budget or if you suffer from sea sickness.

Book a ferry from Capri to Sorrento

Tickets for the funicular and the buses on Capri can be purchased at the tabacco shop ("tabaccheria") at the port of Sorrento. We recommend purchasing them here so you won't have to wait in line at the ticket office once on Capri.

Capri: What to See and Do

At the Marina Grande port, there are always crowds of tourists during the summer months, so it's better to have an itinerary for visiting the island in mind when you disembark so you can quickly get away from the chaos around the pier.

Here are our insider suggestions:

Boat tour to the Blue Grotto : If the Blue Grotto is on your bucket list, it's best to visit as soon as you disembark on the island in the morning, to avoid the long lines which form during the day. At the Marina Grande pier, there are ticket offices for the Laser and Motoscafisti boat tour companies, which offer tours of the island by sea and boat transfers to the Blue Grotto .

The ticket to enter the Blue Grotto can only be purchased directly at the grotto and costs EUR 18. The entry ticket is NEVER included in boat tours or transfers.

Chairlift for Mount Solaro and Villa San Michele : From the Marina Grande port, you can take the bus directly to Anacapri. From here, you can board the chairlift which takes passengers up to the top of Mount Solaro, where you are treated to an unrivaled view over the island and sea. Afterwards, stop in to visit Villa San Michele, just steps from the chairlift departure.

La Piazzetta : Take the funicular from the port up the cliffside to Capri town's famed Piazzetta in just 4 minutes. Unfortunately, it may take much longer than that to simply board in high season due to the crowds. Your best bet is to arrive as early as possible in the morning: purchase your ticket ahead of time from the tobacco shop at the port of Sorrento and head to the funicular (the tunnel right in front of the arrival pier) immediately after disembarking on Capri. From the Piazzetta, you can take a walk to the Gardens of Augustus and along Via Camerelle to Punta Tragara.

Where to stop for lunch on Capri

If you want to have a quick lunch rather than a full restaurant meal, you can pick up a traditional panino caprese made with fresh mozzarella and tomatoes at the "Da Aldo" deli in Marina Grande (considered the best on the island), or sample a traditional dish at "Capri Pasta", which prepares ready-made take-out near the Piazzetta. A refreshing gelato from Buonocore is also a great pick-me-up.

If you would like to sample traditional island cuisine without breaking the bank, try the Verginiello restaurant/pizzeria in the center of Capri. For excellent food with a view over the Piazzetta , we suggest Pulalli, a small restaurant on the square's clocktower.

tours to capri italy

Crowds and queues

One of the inconveniences each year on Capri during the May to September high tourist season are the numerous groups which descend on the island for day trips, creating long queues at for the funicular and bus. Crowds can be especially problematic in July and August, when visitors are forced to wait under the hot sun. During these busy months, you may find it hard to follow our suggested itinerary, so consider instead spending the day on board a boat touring the coast or relaxing on the beach, and saving your stroll through the Piazzetta for the early morning or late afternoon.

How much does day trip from Sorrento to Capri cost?

Here's a rough estimate of how much you'll spend for a day trip to Capri, Italy:

Round trip high speed ferry ticket: EUR 47

Funicular ticket: EUR 2.40

Boat tour of the island: EUR 23

Blue Grotto ticket: EUR 18

Chairlift ticket to Mount Solaro: EUR 12

Entrance ticket to Villa San Michele: EUR 10

Lunch in a restaurant: from EUR 30

Espresso in the Piazzetta: EUR 8

Gelato: EUR 4

Sorrento Tours by Boat to Capri

An excellent alternative to visiting the island independently is joining a semi-private boat tour from Sorrento to Capri. These tours depart from Sorrento on boats for 10-12 passengers , stop near Punta Campanella for a swim, and then continue on to Capri. Once at Marina Piccola, passengers disembark for a few hours of free time to visit the center of Capri town or have lunch in a seaside restaurant. Afterwards, the tour circles the island before returning to Sorrento. Boat Tours from Sorrento to Capri

Inside, pass from complete darkness into a sparkling cavern, lit by azure blue light , while the sounds of ancient Neapolitan song echo along the stone walls.

You are in the Blue Grotto . These photos have not been retouched: inside, the water is exactly as you see here, a crystalline blue with silver reflections. Less than floating on water, you feel as if you are suspended in the heavens. At least once in your lifetime, you should experience this marvel of nature and see firsthand why the Grotta Azzurra is the most famous sight on Capri island .

The Blue Grotto is a natural sea cave, 60 meters long and 25 meters wide . The cave mouth is two meters wide but only roughly a meter high, so to enter visitors must board small rowboats which transport a maximum of four passengers. The skipper will have you lay back along the bottom of the boat while he guides you through the opening using a metal chain attached to the cave walls.

How do I get to the Blue Grotto?

With a tour boat : at Marina Grande's port, you can purchase tickets for tours of the island by sea or a roundtrip ticket to the Blue Grotto at the ticket offices of the Motoscafisti and Laser Capri charter companies. If you purchase the "Island Tour by Sea + Stop at the Grotto", the tour boat will take you on a complete tour of the entire island including a stop at the entrance to the Blue Grotto. Here you will have to disembark from your tour boat and take one of the small rowboats to enter the cave itself.

With a private boat : if you are visiting Capri island with your own private boat and want to tour the Blue Grotto, you can anchor at the buoys near the cave and signal to one of the waiting rowboats to be picked up. You can also hire a private gozzo with skipper from Marina Grande. These traditional island boats carry a maximum of seven passengers (thought there are larger versions available, as well) and the rate for a two hour tour starts from EUR 200.

Walking or by bus : from the center of Anacapri, first walk down Via Pagliaro then down Via Grotta Azzurra (3.5 km). There is also a public bus which leaves from Piazza della Pace. From the final stop, take the stairs down to the seaside where there is the queue to the rowboats. Along the stairs, there is a small concession stand (open only in summer) which sells drinks, snacks, and souvenirs.

When is the best time to visit?

The famous light that illuminates the inside of the cavern is at its strongest between noon and two in the afternoon , though the reflections are spectacular all through the morning hours. Avoid visiting the grotto on heavily overcast days (when the effect of the sunlight inside the cave is much less dramatic). There is often less of a wait in the afternoon (after 3:00 p.m.), but the seas can become rough resulting in the cave closing to the public.

How much does it cost to enter the Blue Grotto Capri?

Tickets cost EUR 18 and are purchased from the floating ticket office (EUR 11 for the rowboat). Discounts : Children entrance under 6 years old: free. For citizens of the European Union younger than 18 entry is free, so tickets must be purchased solely for the rowboat (EUR 11). For citizens of the European Union between 18 and 25 years of age, there is a discount of 50% on the entry ticket, for a total cost of EUR 15. Tickets for the Blue Grotto are in addition to tickets for boat tours from Marina Grande. For boat tours by sea of the island or for a roundtrip transfer to and from the Blue Grotto, the ticket price per person is EUR 21. The rowboat skippers who take visitors inside the grotto usually ask for a tip, though this is is at the discretion of passengers.

Can I swim inside the grotto?

Visitors are not allowed to swim into the grotto or dive from rowboats to swim inside the cavern. Many visitors wait until after 5:30 p.m. when the rowboats leave and the ticket office closes to swim inside. This is illegal and dangerous, as the high waves can slam swimmers against the stone of the low cave mouth.

How do I visit the Blue Grotto with kids?

There is no minimum age to visit the Blue Grotto, though the use of rowboats to gain access to the cave can be hard on small children and infants, as there is often a long wait under the sun.

How long does it take to visit the grotto?

The visit inside the grotto on rowboats lasts about five minutes. However, the wait to enter the cave can be long, reaching an hour during high season at peak times of the day. The average time for a tour of the island by sea plus a visit to the Blue Grotto is about two hours. For a simple roundtrip transfer and visit to the cave, plan for about an hour.

How do I know if the Grotto is open or closed?

In case of strong winds or rough seas, entrance to the grotto will be suspended; often, the grotto will open and close a number of times on the same day when the weather is unstable. Unfortunately, it's hard to forecast closures due to weather, though if the weather forecast reports rough seas, the grotto will probably be closed. To check on up-to-date closures, call the Motoscafisti di Capri pier at 081 8375646 after 9 am.

Is the Grotto open in winter?

In case of mild weather, the Blue Grotto is open during the winter months. That said, the grotto is often closed between November and the beginning of March due to adverse weather conditions. If you are visiting during the winter, you can check up-to-date closures at the Marina Grande port by asking at the ticket windows for Laser Capri (Pier 21) or Motoscafisti di Capri (Pier 0), or by calling the Motoscafisti di Capri pier at 081 8375646 after 9 am. If both ticket offices are closed and no one answers the telephone, the grotto is closed.

Why is the Blue Grotto so, um, blue?

The bright azure color of the water inside the cave is due to the sunlight which enters the cavern through an underwater opening which is positioned exactly under the cave's mouth . As the light passes through the water, the red reflections are filtered out and only the blue enter the cave itself. The famous silver reflections of objects in the water are caused by tiny bubbles covering the outside of objects underwater, which causes the light to refract differently than that of the surrounding water and causes this silvery effect.

What is the history of the grotto?

During the reign of Tiberius in Roman times, the grotto was used as a marine temple, and ancient Roman statues found here are now on display at the Casa Rossa in Anacapri. For many years afterwards, the Blue Grotto was avoided by sailors, as local legends told of spirits and demons living there. One day in 1826, however, local fisherman Angelo Ferraro accompanied German author August Kopisch and painter Ernst Fries to the cave, and their tales of its marvels have led to the grotto being one of the must-see sights on any visitor to Capri's itinerary.

How to Reach the Blue Grotto - Capri - Italy Boat : 10 minutes from Marina Grande or as a stop along an island tour by boat. Bus : From the stop at Anacapri, 50 meters from Piazza Vittoria (a 15 minute ride). Foot : From Viale T. de Tommaso, take Via Pagliaro and then Via Grotta Azzurra (3.5 km, 40 minutes).
