The Best Time to Go On A Mekong River Cruise

The Mekong River is a popular name among international tourists as one of the world's largest rivers, boasting unique serene beauty. Many movies and documentary films have been produced to trace the rich rich-historical story surrounding this river. There are different ways to explore the Mekong, but opting for a Mekong River Cruise is a unique way to witness unparalleled landscapes and picturesque scenes of the river. In this article, we will help you to determine the best time to go on a Mekong River Cruise .

1. The Mekong River

2.1. high-water season in the mekong delta, 2.2. low-water season in the mekong delta, 2.3. the best month for mekong river cruises.

The Mekong River is famous as the largest river in Southeast Asia and ranks among the most beautiful rivers in the world. Originating from the Tibetan Plateau, it flows through Yunnan Province in China and passes through Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. In Vietnam, the Mekong River is renowned as the Cuu Long (Nine Dragons) river that flows into the East Sea, traversing many beautiful destinations.

The Mekong flows through various scenic landscapes of many Southeast Asian countries, each river segment possessing its unique charm. A Mekong River Cruise will take you through every bend to appreciate the overall beauty of the river. Moreover, you will be amazed by the diversity of colors and landscapes along each stretch of the river. Exciting and enticing activities are waiting for travelers to discover on this great river.

Mekong River cruises in Vietnam and Cambodia usually start from Ho Chi Minh City or Can Tho, passing through destinations such as Cho Lach, Cai Be, Sa Dec, Long Xuyen, Chau Doc, and the capital city of Phnom Penh in Cambodia, with some tours extending to Laos. Throughout the journey, visitors will explore famous attractions such as fruit orchards, traditional craft villages, temples, caves, and local markets.

On the boat, travelers can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Mekong River and participate in various entertaining activities such as boat racing, fishing, swimming, and traditional folk games. Visitors can also experience the unique lifestyle and culture of the local people, join in local festivals, and savor the distinctive dishes of the Mekong Delta region. Mekong River cruises provide tourists with a unique opportunity to explore the culture and history of the Southwestern region of Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries. What's particularly special is that travelers get to experience life on the boat and immerse themselves in the tranquil and peaceful atmosphere of the Mekong Delta.

2. The Ideal Time For Mekong River Cruises

The climate in the Mekong Delta is tropical, resulting in consistently high humidity levels throughout the entire year. The typical temperature varies between 23°C and 34°C, and there is not a significant difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. The Mekong Delta experiences two distinct seasons, known as the high water and low water seasons , corresponding to wet and dry seasons .

The high water season, occurring between mid-August and November , allows river cruises to access the Tonle Sap Lake, enabling visits to floating villages and the Prek Toal Bird Reserve. During this time, ships can also dock, facilitating a visit to Siem Reap, just a 45-minute drive away. In addition, exploring the region at this time allows you to experience a scenic setting submerged in water. The flourishing expanses of water lilies also stand out as a unique characteristic of the Mekong River Delta in Vietnam during the floating season. This time of the year also captivates your senses with delectable and alluring specialties. Indulging in the plentiful fish offerings of the area during the floating season is a culinary experience not to be missed.

The low water season happens from December to April , providing relief from the intense rainfall. Throughout this period, the skies become clear, and the region is bathed in the warm embrace of the sun. During this period, water levels recede, revealing the intricate network of channels and islands that form the delta. The landscape takes on a more intimate and serene character, offering a unique perspective on the region's natural beauty. The lower water levels make it an ideal time for exploring hidden corners and witnessing the daily life of local communities. Additionally, the low water season coincides with the fruit harvest, turning the delta into a colorful tapestry of orchards laden with ripe produce, creating a feast for the senses amidst the warmth of the season.

Given that the Mekong River flows through multiple countries, each segment with its unique climate, travelers have the flexibility to explore Mekong River cruises at any time throughout the year.

Nevertheless, according to the season travelers who often take cruises, the best time to do a Mekong River Cruise  is generally considered to be from November to February . During this period, the weather is cool , with less rainfall and refreshing air , providing an excellent opportunity to relax on the sundeck, capture beautiful river photos, and engage with local communities. Furthermore, the dry season is the peak for tasting the region's yum tropical fruits , such as mangoes, durians, and jackfruits.

For those seeking the vibrant experience of the floating life on Tonle Sap , the best time to visit is during the peak of the wet season, from August to early October . This period sees rising water levels, making the Delta's tributaries and canals navigable and offering a unique cultural encounter at the floating markets.

In summary, the Mekong River experiences a hot and dry climate from March to May, with the highest rainfall between July and October. From November to February, the weather is pleasant and cool, making this period ideal for exploring the mighty Mekong River.

Heritage Line: Luxury Mekong River Cruises

Heritage Line is a luxury cruise company that operates in Southeast Asia, and is known for providing upscale cruise experiences in the Mekong Delta region.

Heritage Line’s Lower Mekong River cruises typically include visits to various villages and cities along the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia. Passengers get to experience the culture and traditions of the region, visit local markets and villages, and enjoy onboard amenities and services that cater to a luxury travel experience.

The boats are beautiful, but it’s the staff onboard that makes a Heritage Line cruise so special. They’ve found the most friendly, knowledgeable crew to run the bridges, kitchens, lounges, and tours.

Heritage Line Ship: The Jahan

The Jahan is a beautiful river boat, which sails the Mekong River through both Cambodia and Vietnam. It launched in 2011.

The Heritage Line Jahan, on the Mekong River

It’s spacious, and the limited number of passengers will keep you from ever feeling crowded onboard. There are two lounges (one inside and one outside).

The Jahan also has a big sun deck with a pool, and an observatory on the top floor at the front of the ship.

Heritage Line Jahan pool deck

The Heritage Line features 3, 4, or 7-night Mekong River cruises on the Jahan.

Visitors have 26 suites and staterooms to choose from. Each has its own private bathroom and private balcony.

Heritage Line Jahan guest suite

The accommodations range from 325 square feet up to 550 square feet.

The Jahan is named after a 16th-century Indian emperor, and the ship draws its design inspiration from Indian culture.

The decor includes old-world throwbacks, from antique phones to skeleton keys for the doors.

There’s a spa onboard, offering massages, along with a small gym, and an outdoor shower on the upper deck.

The food is excellent and usually served buffet-style for breakfast and lunch. Two chefs are on hand at the meals to prepare dishes made-to-order (in addition to the buffet). Dinner is more of a fixed menu, with choices for each of the five courses.

The chefs do a nice job catering to specific dietary requirements, etc. They also host cooking classes, for anyone onboard who wants to learn more about local cuisine.

Heritage Line Jahan Chef

Prices for a cruise on the Jahan start at $1,100 for 3-nights during the rainy season. They range up to the $6,000-range for 7-night cruises in the winter months.

Heritage Line Ship: The Jayavarman

The Heritage Line’s other ship taking passengers on the Lower Mekong River is the Jayavarman. It’s named after a Cambodian monarch, known for building some of the famous and mysterious temples which draw so many tourists to the Angkor region.

Best time to visit Cambodia's temples

The Jayavarman has 27 staterooms and suites on two decks, and is decorated in a French-Colonial motif. Each has a private bathroom and private balcony. The size of each ranges from 215 square feet to about 300 square feet.

The ship has lounges and a sun deck with a pool, in addition to the standard dining facilities.

Similar to the Heritage Line’s Jahan, the Jayavarman takes passengers on 3, 4, and 7-night cruises on the Mekong River through Vietnam and Cambodia.

Prices for a cruise on the Jayavarman range from about $1,100 for 3 nights in the summer months, to $4,700 for 7 nights in the suite during the winter months.

The Mekong River Delta

The Mekong River is one of the longest and most important rivers in Southeast Asia, flowing through multiple countries in the region. Here’s a brief synopsis of the Mekong River:

  • Geography : The Mekong River is approximately 4,350 kilometers (2,703 miles) long. It originates in the Tibetan Plateau and flows down through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam before emptying into the South China Sea.
  • Cultural and Ecological Significance : The Mekong River plays a vital role in the livelihoods of millions of people. The river supports various economic activities, including agriculture, fishing, transportation, and trade.
  • Challenges : The Mekong River faces various challenges, including dam construction, deforestation, pollution, and climate change. In Vietnam, you’ll hear complaints that Chinese dams are taking too much of the water, and keeping water levels too low on the Lower Mekong.

Stops on a Mekong River Cruise

A Mekong River cruise typically covers several cities and towns in different countries as it navigates through the Mekong Delta region in Southeast Asia. The specific cities and towns that a Mekong River cruise may stop in can vary depending on the cruise itinerary and the cruise operator.

Here are some of the major cities and towns that are commonly included in Mekong River cruise itineraries:

  • Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam : Many Mekong River cruises start or end in Ho Chi Minh City, also known as Saigon, which is the largest city in Vietnam. Passengers have the opportunity to explore the city’s attractions before or after the cruise.
  • My Tho, Vietnam : Located in the Mekong Delta region, My Tho is a common starting point for Mekong River cruises in Vietnam. It’s known for its scenic canals and floating markets.
  • Cai Be, Vietnam : Cai Be is another Vietnamese town known for its floating market, which is a popular stop for Mekong River cruises. It’s fallen off the itinerary for some cruise lines, as some say the market is more for show than for playing a true role in the local economy.
  • Phnom Penh, Cambodia : The capital city of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, is often included in the Mekong River cruise itineraries. Passengers can explore its rich history, including the Royal Palace and Killing Fields.
  • Kampong Cham, Cambodia : Located in eastern Cambodia, Kampong Cham is known for its French colonial architecture and serene riverside setting.
  • Kampong Chhnang, Cambodia : This town is famous for its pottery production and traditional stilt houses along the riverbanks.
  • Siem Reap, Cambodia : Although not directly on the Mekong River, some cruises include a side trip to Siem Reap, where tourists visit the stunning Angkor Wat temple complex. Some tour companies offer transportation (around 4 hours) from the boat to Siem Reap. Others, like the Heritage Line, have an office in Siem Reap. This allows passengers to fly to the city, spend as much time as they’d like in the area, and then begin their Mekong River cruise.
  • Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia : Some Mekong River cruises include a visit to Tonle Sap Lake, Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake, known for its floating villages.
  • Sa Dec, Vietnam : Sa Dec is a town known for its flower gardens and was the setting for parts of the novel “The Lover” by Marguerite Duras.

The Basics on Siem Reap

Siem Reap isn’t on the Mekong River, but it’s often “a stop” on a Mekong River Cruise or tour. Passengers are usually bused about 4-5 hours between the Siem Reap area and the dock on the river.

Beginning your river cruise by flying into Siem Reap allows you to explore Cambodia’s most popular region for international tourists. Angkor Wat is the most famous temple complex, but you’ll find many others nearby.

Jared Dillingham at Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia

It’s worth arriving a few days early to see the sites around Siem Reap, before beginning your river cruise. Alternatively, if your river cruise ends in Siem Reap, it’s worth spending another night or two in a hotel in this part of Cambodia!

Among the sites to see:

  • Angkor Wat : Siem Reap is famous for being the gateway to the Angkor Archaeological Park, which includes the iconic Angkor Wat temple complex. Angkor Wat is one of the most renowned archaeological sites in Southeast Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Angkor Thom : Within the Angkor Archaeological Park, Angkor Thom is another significant complex. It features the Bayon Temple with its famous smiling faces.
  • Ta Prohm Temple : Known for its “Tomb Raider” fame, Ta Prohm is a temple that has been left in a semi-ruined state with trees and roots growing through its stone structures. (photo below)
  • Tonle Sap Lake : While in Siem Reap, some cruise itineraries may include a visit to Tonle Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia.
  • Local Markets : Siem Reap has vibrant markets, including the Old Market (Phsar Chas) and the Angkor Night Market, where you can shop for souvenirs, handicrafts, clothing, and local products.

The Basics on Phnom Penh

A stop in Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia, during a Mekong River cruise offers travelers a chance to explore a mix of history, culture, and modern life.

PRO TIP : Taking a tuk-tuk is easy and price-effective. A ride from the cruise ship dock to any of these sites will only be a few dollars. And remember: US Dollars are accepted everywhere in Cambodia!

Here are a few suggestions if you have a few hours to explore.

  • Royal Palace : Visit the Royal Palace complex, which includes the Silver Pagoda, a stunning temple, and much more. (photo below)
  • National Museum : The National Museum of Cambodia houses a vast collection of Khmer art and artifacts, providing insight into the country’s rich cultural heritage. It’s a great place to learn about Cambodia’s history and artistry.
  • Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21) : A somber but essential historical site, this former Khmer Rouge prison tells the tragic story of the Cambodian genocide. It serves as a sobering reminder of Cambodia’s recent history.
  • Killing Fields (Choeung Ek) : Located on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, the Killing Fields are another sobering historical site where you can learn about the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime. The site includes a memorial stupa filled with the skulls of victims.
  • Wat Phnom : This is the city’s namesake temple and a tranquil place to visit. It’s located on a small hill in the city center and offers a peaceful escape from the bustling streets below.
  • Central Market (Phsar Thmei) : Explore this bustling market with its distinctive Art Deco architecture. It’s a great place to shop for souvenirs, clothing, jewelry, and local products.

The Basics on Saigon / Ho Chi Minh City

Most Mekong River cruises begin or end in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It’s acceptable to call the city by its older name, Saigon, as well.

Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh City

Here are some things you can do in Saigon before or after your cruise:

  • Visit the War Remnants Museum:  Gain insights into Vietnam’s history by exploring this museum, which houses a collection of artifacts, weapons, tanks, planes, and exhibits related to the Vietnam War.
  • Explore the Cu Chi Tunnels:  Located just outside the city, these underground tunnels were used by the Viet Cong during the war. You can take a guided tour to learn about their history and even crawl through a section of the tunnels. These tours are usually half-day adventures.
  • Notre-Dame Cathedral Saigon:  Visit this stunning Catholic cathedral, built during the French colonial period. It’s an excellent example of French Gothic architecture, made of red bricks imported from France. The cathedral’s ongoing renovation project has impacted tourism for several years.
  • Central Post Office:  Adjacent to the Notre Dame Cathedral, this beautiful colonial-era building is still a functioning post office. Inside, you’ll find elegant architecture and historical significance, along with souvenir shops and tour companies. (photo above)
  • Independence Palace (Reunification Palace):  Explore the former presidential palace, which played a crucial role in the Vietnam War. You can tour the rooms and the lush gardens surrounding the building.
  • Ben Thanh Market:  Shop for souvenirs, clothing, and local street food at this bustling market. It’s a great place to experience the local culture and cuisine. Haggling over prices is expected. As a general rule, the first price a vendor offers is double the price they’ll accept.
  • Saigon Opera House:  If you’re interested in the arts, check the schedule for performances at the Opera House. It often hosts ballet, opera, and other cultural events.
  • Take a Walk along Dong Khoi Street:  This historic street is lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants. It’s a great place for a leisurely stroll and people-watching.
  • Nightlife:  Saigon’s nightlife is lively, with rooftop bars, nightclubs, and live music venues. Enjoy a night out on the town and soak in the city’s energy.

Villages & Islands on the Mekong River

Your Mekong River cruise will likely include stops at several small villages in the delta region. Here are three of the many options.

Tan Phong is an island on the Mekong River, surrounded by lush water hyacinths growing along the shorelines.

Water hyacinths on the Mekong River

The plants grow quickly, and become strong when they’re dried. Skilled weavers can turn them into hammocks and baskets.

While the men of the region spend their days farming and fishing, the women weave baskets and hammocks to sell. As I mentioned earlier, you’ll find: several families are eager to invite you into their homes to show you their skills.

Vietnamese village weaving

Agriculture is another economic driver of the Tan Phong area. Tropical fruit, like jackfruit, grow easily in the climate here.

Jack fruit growing in Vietnam

They’re almost as highly-valued as the infamous durian fruit. Their stench is so feared, that many hotels will make you sign a pledge not to bring a durian into your room! They’re highly nutritious, said to be good for the gut, and said to be especially good for men.

I didn’t find the smell overly offensive! The taste was almost floral, and the fruit meat itself had the consistency of a mushy banana.

Jared Dillingham holding a durian in Vietnam

You’ll see fish traps along the shoreline surrounding Tan Phong, which are checked daily by families. They find mostly shrimp, tilapia, and catfish.

Binh Thanh is an island in the Mekong River, which is popular with cruise passengers. It’s 6 kilometers wide, 10 kilometers long, and home to around a thousand people.

The island is home to just one temple, where the people worship the “God of the Land,” and come to pray for health and luck.

Families here make money growing mangoes and weaving rattan products. Some run cargo boats, bringing rice and vegetables around the Mekong Delta.

Visitors will notice metal shacks floating on the Mekong River. These are fish farms, raising mostly red snappers.

The cruise companies often make donations to the villages their passengers visit. As an example, people at the temple in Binh Thanh said the Heritage Line has donated thousands (of US Dollars) which they’ve used to renovate the complex.

Tan Chau is a village on the Mekong River, and a bit larger than the others.

Tan Chau on the Mekong River

Tan Chau is home to a large market, full of fruit, vegetables, jewelry, clothing, housewares, and much more! The vendors were friendly, and not overly-pushing their products.

Tan Chau is also home to a century-old colorful temple. It belongs to a religion that combines Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, and more.

You’ll find even more fish farms floating around Tan Chau. Each holds around 100,000 fish, which are mostly tilapia and catfish. It takes almost a full year to raise them to the point that they’re ready for market.

The Best Time to Cruise the Mekong River

The Mekong Delta experiences a distinct (and lengthy) wet season, from May to October. While cruising during the wet season can still be enjoyable (and save you money), it’ll likely involve more rainier days.

The best time to cruise the Mekong River can vary depending on your preferences and the specific experiences you’re looking for.

Many travelers find that the dry season, which typically spans from November to March, is the most favorable time for Mekong River cruises.

What to Pack for the Mekong

There are a few extra packing tips to pass along for anyone planning a Mekong River cruise.

1. You Need Visas

You’ll need a visa for whichever country you’re cruising in along the Mekong.

Visas for both Cambodia and Vietnam are very easy to apply for online. Just check your dates on the application to make sure the visa covers your entire stay.

The cost of a Vietnamese Visa is about $25. Click here for the official application .

The cost of a Cambodian Visa is about $35. Click here for the official application .

Once you’ve applied and paid the visa fee, it should arrive in your email (to be printed) within a couple of days. Your cruise company can help you fill in the names of the ports on the visa application forms.

2. Take Cash: Dong & Dollars

US Dollars are widely accepted in Cambodia.

PRO TIP: Bring a lot of small denominations ($1s, $5s, $10s). It’ll make it easy for tipping, and also buying things in stores and restaurants.

In Vietnam, you’ll have to change your currency to Dong. You can do this before boarding, or just withdraw cash from an ATM. Some of the larger Mekong River cruise companies will be able to exchange currency for your onboard.

The US Dollar goes far in all of Southeast Asia. Even tipping generously, you’ll likely only need to bring a couple hundred dollars to cover your costs for the week.

3. Clothing

It’s hot and humid! Lightweight, breathable fabrics will be best.

Bring a pair of pants (or long shorts to cover your knees) in case they’re needed to enter a temple.

A warning: My Lulu-type shirts that I normally wear to the gym or hiking in Arizona weren’t great in the weather here.

It’s worth packing a cheap poncho that’ll roll up small in your bag.

4. Footwear

The cruise company will likely provide you with a pair of sandals to wear on the ship. Still, an extra pair of sturdy sandals will come in handy on the shore excursions. Breathable hiking or trail-running-type sneakers are a good idea, too.

5. Bug Repellent

The mosquitoes weren’t nearly as bad as I’d expected! Still, we were happy to have repellent with us.

I’d suggest a roll-on stick, which you don’t have to include in your “liquids” as you pass through airport security.

Tipping Staff on a Mekong River Cruise

There were 42 staff members on our Mekong River cruise ship! I was nervous about how tipping would work, and if I’d have enough cash.

Here’s a good guide for the tip to leave at the end of the cruise:

  • $15 USD per day, per person (so $30 tip each day for a couple).
  • At the end of our 3-day tour, we rounded up to $100.
  • Tipping in general is not expected, but is greatly appreciated.

The tips are pooled, and divided among the staff members.

Your cruise ship might have a separate tour guide who leads the shore excursions. That guide likely does not get a share of the pooled tips. The suggestion for tour guide tipping is:

  • $5 USD per person (for each day the guide leads a tour).
  • For two days of tours, we rounded up to a $30 tip for our guide.

Mekong River Cruise Safety

Mekong River cruises can provide a safe and memorable travel experience when travelers take appropriate precautions and stay informed about the destination’s specific conditions.

TRAVEL TIP : My doctor recommended a typhoid shot and a hepatitis shot before my trip to Southeast Asia.

Here are some other safety considerations when taking a Mekong River cruise:

  • Choose a Reputable Operator : Select a well-established and reputable cruise operator with a track record of positive customer reviews.
  • Travel Insurance : If you’re concerned, purchase comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen events. Make sure you understand the terms and coverage of your policy. It’s not something I typically do for trips, but a river cruise comes with an added expense, so it may be worth it.
  • Water Safety : The Mekong River can have strong currents, so the crews on the smaller boats will likely have you wear a life jacket as you head toward shore.
  • Food and Water Safety : Be cautious about what you eat and drink to avoid foodborne illnesses. Stick to bottled or purified water.

TRAVEL TIP : My doctor prescribed a “just in case” anti-diarrheal to take along.

FAQs about a Mekong River Cruise

Let’s tackle a few frequently asked questions about Mekong River Cruises. Some of these are answered above.

Are Mekong River Cruises Safe?

Mekong River cruises can provide a safe and memorable travel experience when travelers take appropriate precautions and stay informed about the destination’s specific conditions. You’ll feel very safe in Southeast Asia.

In terms of food safety (and general health), as I mentioned above, my doctor prescribed a few vaccine updates, plus an anti-diarrheal to bring.

What’s the best month to take a Mekong River Cruise?

Ultimately, the best time to cruise the Mekong River depends on your preferences for weather, the type of experiences you want, and your tolerance for potential weather-related disruptions.

In general, crowds are larger during the winter (dry season), and higher prices come along with the nicer weather, too.

Late September into October might be the ideal time for me, since the rains become less frequent, prices are still below “high season” levels, and crowds are smaller, too.

Does the Mekong River Flood?

The river floods, but unless there’s some sort of major storm the ships keep sailing. The guides will still take travelers on their excursions into the villages. The people who live in the region see the floods as mixed blessings. They’re muddy and messy, but the silt and sand fertilize the soil.

Observation deck on the Mekong River boat Jahan

Wrap: Is a Mekong River Cruise Worth It?

A Mekong River cruise is an adventurous, but very comfortable (and even luxurious!) way to see the Mekong Delta.

The ships are beautiful, and the living quarters are comfortable and clean.

If several days is too long on the river, there are day-trip options to choose from. Basically, there’s an itinerary and pricepoint to fit most budgets and interests.

Most notably, after just a few days, you’ll walk away with unique memories made by your interactions with people living in villages along the river!

Nguyen was our guide in DaNang and Hoi an. He is very professional and knowledgeable. He speaks fluent English and managed well with the timing of activities without us feeling too rush. Certain places were not on the itineraries but he explained very clearly how we could visit those places such as Golden Bridge and Marble Mountain from daNang, and how much time we would spend there. He was very dedicated to his job and our experience in DaNang and Hoi An would not be that enjoyable if he were not our local guide. Job well done by Nguyen!

Endless Beauty of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand - 19 Days

This tour was epic for me. As a first time American to all these countries was a dream. Danny from the Legends Company was very informative, took care to keep us informed and accessible by Whats up to help and assist with travel issues. We picked a private driver and guide. It was so worth it in hot weather. The hotels and meals were good. The itinerary was great. I would recommend spending more time in Thailand on your own after the tour. I believe this was a great out and a great price.

From the Angkor Temples to the Mekong Delta (port-to-port cruise)

We had a great time. Accommodation was very good although our room at the back was a little noisy due to being near the generator and engine room which I would not recommend ( maybe a discounted price should be offered ). Very well organized and excellent tour manager. Always something on the itinerary even whilst the boat was sailing eg cookery demos, serviette folding, fruit carving, talks, films. I think the cruise could be shortened by a couple of days as a lot of the things we saw were very repetitive ,especially the pagodas! We were the only English guests on board which at times was a little difficult but on the plus side we had our own personal English speaking guides (3 in total at different parts of the cruise) which was fantastic. Chan Seng in Cambodia has to have a special mention for his fantastic knowledge and understanding of English. The food both on board and at restaurants on land was excellent my only complaint was that the drinks were not included in the package which for the price we paid I think they should have been, as most cruises do, ( only a soft drink or a beer were included per person per meal). Overall I would recommend this cruise as we had a lovely time.

Trip planner: how to plan your perfect mekong river cruise.

Winding its way from the Tibetan Plateau to the South China Sea, the Mekong River brings together the best of Indochina old and new – explore stilt villages, mountain temples and more with our guide...

The Mekong River is a South-East Asian adventure to add to your bucket list. The best way to see the Mekong and the surrounding destinations is on a cruise.

Here, we'll reveal the best routes for cruising the Mekong. For our full guide to planning your journey, keep scrolling. Or click your chosen question to skip through the guide...

What are the best routes along the Mekong?

Can you combine any of the river cruises on the Mekong?

When's the best time to cruise the Mekong River?

Why visit the mekong river.

Back in the 1990s, the Mekong River felt like the final frontier for travellers. At its northern reaches, it marked the border between the comfort zone of Thailand and the then undiscovered world of Laos, which a combination of conflict and communism had pushed off the overland map of South-East Asia.

Crossing the newly built Friendship Bridge over the border from Nong Khai and heading towards Vientiane in 1995, I felt like an explorer. This was long before the days that Beer Lao T-shirts were as common as Red Bull vests among Bangkok backpackers.

The Lao capital of Vientiane was a sleepy backwater and the now long-gone Bar Mixay was the place to be – a ramshackle old building on the shores of the Mekong River that attracted everyone from Russian spies to wide-eyed travellers.

The Mekong River at Luang Prabang is an altogether different creature, as it winds its way past the historic old town, the opposite bank cloaked in a blanket of spinach-green jungle.

That side of the river summed up the spirit of Laos in the early days: an unknown jumble of ancient temples, Hmong villages and DIY jungle treks where adventures lay in wait.

Travelling southwards back to Vientiane by cargo boat took three long days in rain and shine, and we lived off the fresh oranges that were being transported from China’s Yunnan province to Thailand. Vitamin C boost aside, it was a relief to finally get back on dry land.

Exploring its southerly reaches – rambling through Cambodia and Vietnam – was not without incident either. In 1995, it was necessary to reach Siem Reap by speedboat to due to ongoing Khmer Rouge ambushes on the Cambodian highways via Kompong Thom or Battambang.

After exploring those famous temples of Angkor with barely a visitor in sight, it was then time to explore the canals and floating markets of the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, another world entirely from laid-back Luang Prabang and the edgy bustle of Phnom Penh.

Times may have changed since then, for better and worse, but in some ways the Mekong River is timeless – imbued with myth, history and culture, and flowing it through the very heart of South-East Asia. Following its course remains an aquatic adventure to savour.

1. The Golden Triangle to Luang Prabang

Best for: River deep, mountain high & religious remnants

Duration:  Seven days Route:  Chiang Rai (Thailand) • Chiang Khong • Huay Xai (Laos) • Pak Beng • Luang Prabang

Why do it?  The perfect way to begin or end a Mekong River encounter. Get over the jet lag with a gentle river cruise to Luang Prabang or hold o the return to everyday life by unwinding on the water – this is your decompression chamber between East and West.

The village of Pak Beng, Laos (Dreamstime)

The village of Pak Beng, Laos (Dreamstime)

After a few days amid the wats of Thailand’s Chiang Rai, make for the Laos border, where boats leave from the bustling town of Huay Xai on the Lao side.

The mountains soon overshadow the meandering river, and by sunset they are almost gorge-like as the boats stop overnight at Pak Beng, a transit town bursting with guesthouses and a couple of more upscale lodges.

On day two, pay a visit to a typical Hmong village complete with a lao-Lao (rice whisky) distillery. As forested slopes yield to cli s, the final flourish on the approach to Luang Prabang is a stop at the Pak Ou Caves.

Cut into the limestone, these natural rock chambers overflow with thousands of images of the Buddha, left here as marks of faith by successive pilgrims.

The cruise ends in Luang Prabang. Languid and lovely, this UNESCO World Heritage site is home to over 30 stupa-studded wats. As dawn breaks, a line of safron stretches as far as the eye can see as Buddhist monks shuffle along the streets in search of alms – an iconic image of this historic town.

2. vientiane to pakse.

The Third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge joins Tha Khaek with Thailand's Nakhon Phanom Province (Shutterstock)

Best for: Dramatic karst landscapes, hidden caves & crumbling colonial-era towns

Duration:  Six days

Route: Vientiane (Laos) • Tham Kong Lor cave • Tha Khaek • Savannakhet • Pakse

Why do it: Central Laos is often overlooked by visitors, but is home to some of the most dramatic landscapes in the country. Throw in a few less-visited towns, such as Tha Khaek and Savannakhet, and it’s easy to have an off-the-beaten-track adventure.

The karst-studded landscape of Khammouane Province (Shutterstock)

The karst-studded landscape of Khammouane Province (Shutterstock)

Landlubbers unite – now’s the time to leave the riverborne transport behind and travel by road through central Laos.

Tha Khaek is a sleepy old colonial town that provides a gateway to the karst-studded landscape of Khammouane Province. Venture inland on the scenic Tha Khaek loop to the Tham Kong Lor cave, where a river flows for 7km into the mouth of a mountain.

Colonial-era architecture still dominates Savannakhet (Shutterstock)

Further south is Savannakhet, Cambodia’s second-largest city, although in reality it feels more like a provincial town. Old French-era architecture conceals affordable boutique hotels, while the colonial influence continues in the emerging restaurant scene.

3. si phan don.

Khon Phapheng Falls (Shutterstock)

Khon Phapheng Falls (Shutterstock)

Best for: Mountain temples, waterfalls, island life & hanging around in a hammock

Duration:  Seven days

Route: Pakse (Laos) • Champasak • Wat Phu temple • Don Khong • Don Khon • Don Det

Why do it? Southern Laos is often cited as one of the most traditionally Lao regions in the country. If the Lao people can be characterised as laid-back compared to some of their more driven neighbours, they become positively horizontal on the river archipelago of Si Phan Don (4,000 Islands). Relax, take your time and experience Laos at a local pace.

Venturing deeper into southern Laos, the Mekong reaches its widest point before spilling over natural waterfalls into Cambodia. This area was once part of the mighty Khmer empire, and the legacy of Angkor is evident at the temple of Wat Phu, built in the shadow of Lingaparvata mountain.

A fisherman at Khon Phapheng Falls (Shutterstock)

Si Phan Don is where the Mekong splits into tiny tributaries, creating an archipelago where the pace of life is unhurried and the people unconcerned by the changing world beyond. The main islands to visit are Don Khong – the largest at 18km long – Don Khon and Don Det.

The dramatic Khon Phapheng Falls (dubbed ‘the Niagara of the East’) is the most spectacular feature along the mother river and plays host to a drama of its own, as fishermen scale bamboo ladders to trap fish from the unrelenting spray. Sample their wares in the form of a delectable fish   laap , a spicy Lao salad with a fiery kick.

Or why not take a detour.

Heading to the Angkor temple via the Tonle Sap

Tonle Sap Lake, the largest body of freshwater in South-East Asia, is an astonishing natural feature that provides fish and irrigation water for as much as half of Cambodia’s population.

The lake is linked to the Mekong at Phnom Penh by the 120km-long Tonle Sap River. In the rainy season (May to early October), the level of the Mekong rises dramatically and its waters flood into the Tonle Sap River, reversing its flow back north-west into the great lake.

During this period, the lake balloons to more than six times its size, from 2,500 sq km to around 15,000 sq km. Come October, the water level of the Mekong begins to fall and the flow of the Tonle Sap River reverts to its previous direction, draining the waters of the swollen lake back into the Mekong. A natural flood barrier protecting the pancake-flat delta of Vietnam, the Tonle Sap system is nature’s masterclass in water control.

The ancient Khmers understood the power of these waters better than anyone. They harnessed them to create the mightiest empire in South-East Asia, bequeathing humanity the most magnificent temples on Earth in the process.

Enough ink has already been used in singing the praises of the temples of Angkor – suffice to say, they don’t disappoint. Don’t miss Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious structure, but also make time for the enigmatic stone faces of the Bayon and the incredible tentacle-like tree roots of Ta Prohm – a real-life Indiana Jones experience.

4. Stung Treng to Phnom Penh

Women selling vegetables on the market in Stung Treng (Shutterstock)

Women selling vegetables on the market in Stung Treng (Shutterstock)

Duration:  Five days

Route:  Stung Treng (Cambodia) • Kratie • Chhlong • Kompong Cham • Phnom Penh

Why do it?  This is the most remote and wild stretch of the Mekong in Cambodia and reveals isolated island communities and traditional lifestyles that are fast being abandoned in the cities. The real highlight is spotting the rare river dolphins of Kampi, although there is also a gentle charm to the nearby town of Kratie and the Mekong island of Koh Trong. Earn a night on the town in Phnom Penh after this remote adventure.

Heading south, into Cambodia and past Stung Treng, the shores become a hive of activity as local people cast out nets, paddle their boats or fire up their pumps to harness the waters and earn a living.

Approaching Kratie, the river provides a habitat for some of the region’s last freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins. Some dolphins are coy and expose no more than a peep of flesh; others are bolder, showing visitors their full form as they push upwards for a gulp of air.

Further south, the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh is a chaotic yet charming collision of past and present. It’s a petite place compared to many metropolises in neighbouring countries, with a gentle riverine atmosphere that also belonged to a Bangkok of long ago – although this is fast changing with Chinese investment now redefining the city skyline. Indulge in blissful boutique hotels, fine dining and some noteworthy nightlife.

The glittering skyline of Ho Chi Minh City (Shutterstock)

Best for: Floating markets, river life & big-city buzz

Duration:  Three days (by river); Seven days (overland)

Route: Phnom Penh (Cambodia) • Chau Doc (Vietnam) • Can Tho • Vinh Long • My Tho • Ho Chi Minh City

Why do it?  Enjoy life in the slow lane on a river journey from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City – still known by its old name of Saigon to many.

Nevertheless, the cross-border contrast between Cambodia and Vietnam, where the Mekong is a major transport route, is stark – like switching from a country lane to the M25. At the end of the road, the former Vietnamese capital offers sophistication and the option of an extension in the likes of Phu Quoc, Con Dao or beyond.

One of the many floating markets in the Delta (Shutterstock)

One of the many floating markets in the Delta (Shutterstock)

As the Mekong leaves Cambodia, the river splits into nine arteries. The Vietnamese know this section as Song Cuu Long (River of Nine Dragons), for it’s here that it breathes life into their country’s delta and fire into its agricultural economy.

Daily life is fascinating to observe, as traders, travellers, fishermen and farmers bustle for space on the water. In a pancake-flat land that floods whenever the monsoon arrives, rivers are equal to roads in importance.

Befitting a commercial centre, Can Tho is ringed by floating markets, of which Cai Rang is the largest, bringing together hundreds of tiny vessels selling fruit, vegetables, fish, flowers, and a sprinkling of souvenirs. Observing from afar, it’s a riot of colour, punctuated only by the conical hats that protect the sellers from the sun.

A side street in Ho Chi Minh (Shutterstock)

As the final destination on a downstream Mekong journey, Ho Chi Minh City is the dynamic face of new Vietnam. There’s a real buzz here at the heart of the Delta, and we’re not just talking about the motorbike engines.

Bold and beautiful, cultured and commercial, historic and holistic, this metropolis offers something for everyone, and makes a fine place to end a trip along one of the world’s great rivers.

Rise early to explore the Cai Rang floating market, near Can Tho. See hundreds of boats jostle for position, providing a feast for the senses.

Can you combine any of the mekong river cruises , yes you can. put together a few shorter cruises to build your own epic itinerary along the mekong river.. ..

With so much to see along the Mekong, chances are that a single cruise won’t suffice, so why not mix a few together? Choose from a river adventure in Laos or a two-country cruise in Cambodia and Vietnam. Or go for the big one and follow the river from the Golden Triangle to Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).

Laos: 14 days

The Mekong flowing past Vang Vieng (Shutterstock)

Start in the Golden Triangle and take a two-day cruise to Luang Prabang via Pak Beng. After a few days soaking up the atmosphere, continue overland to Vientiane via the reinvented adventure centre of Vang Vieng.

From the Lao capital, head south to the sleepy charms of Tha Khaek and the incredible Tham Kong Lor river cave. Pass through the second city of Savannakhet before reconnecting with the Mekong at Pakse to board a three-day cruise into the heart of Si Phan Don (4,000 Islands).

Cambodia and Vietnam: 10 days (or 14 days with a costal extension)

Cruising past Phnom Penh during sunset (Shutterstock)

Begin this Mekong cruise in the commercial capital of Vietnam, bustling Ho Chi Minh City, and after a few days exploring, take a four-day cruise through the Mekong Delta to Phnom Penh.

Experience the sights, sounds and smells of the Cambodian capital, including its excellent restaurant scene, before continuing on to Siem Reap, gateway to the temples of Angkor. Take a few days to soak it all in, then consider a flight to Sihanoukville to round off with a beach break on the island of Koh Rong.

Alternatively, opt for a coastal adventure around the twin centres of Kep and Kampot or an eco-experience in the wild Cardamom Mountains at Cardamom Tented Camp.

Weather-wise, the best time to cruise the Mekong River is usually November to February, although the temperatures may be a little fresh in the morning air of northern Laos.

The wet season months offer some impressively green landscapes and discounted itineraries from the big cruise companies. April and May are very hot with low water levels in some areas.

10 of the best Mekong cruises for an unforgettable adventure

A cruise on southeast asia’s longest river is a wonderful way to explore the floating markets and teeming cities of vietnam and cambodia.

A s we sit cross-legged in front of two chanting monks, the heady scent of jasmine blossom fills the air. The fragrant buds are then scattered over our heads as the monks bless us at Vipassana Dhura, the largest Buddhist monastery at Oudong in Cambodia. Outside, curious children giggle and wave as we walk by. These are some of my favourite moments on a Mekong river cruise, where you will be immersed in authentic experiences as you sail through Vietnam and Cambodia. River ships on the Mekong are small and they explore many places untouched by mass tourism, yet you’ll often also get to see the buzzing cities of Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh. Here are ten of the best ways to cruise on the Mekong.

You can expect some unusual and memorable shore excursions with this all-inclusive line. On river itineraries combined with a land tour in Cambodia , there’s a magical gala dinner under the glow of coloured lights at Prasat Kravan, a moated 10th-century temple in Siem Reap. You can also visit Phnom Penh’s only rum distillery for a behind-the-scenes tour and tasting, followed by a night-time tuk-tuk ride around the city. You’ll sail on Scenic Spirit, which reflects the luxury of Scenic’s European ships; it has 34 balcony suites and butler service to all the rooms.

Whether you’ve got seven nights or 17, Avalon offers a range of itineraries to sail on the Mekong. They all include Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh. In the latter, excursions include visits to the dazzling silver pagoda paved with 5,000 silver tiles and with a solid gold Buddha adorned with 9,500 diamonds, or to the sobering Killing Fields. Cruises are aboard the comfortable, 36-passenger Avalon Saigon, which carries fewer guests than many other ships of the same size. Also, Avalon’s beds always face the window — so you never miss any passing views when you’re relaxing in your cabin.

Ho Chi Minh City is a beguiling destination and it marks the start and finishing point for Riviera’s 14-night Mekong itinerary. An overnight hotel stay provides plenty of time to join tours to see sights such as the unexpectedly elegant Central Post Office with its vaulted roof. The elaborate design makes sense when you realise it was designed by Gustave Eiffel. On the river you’ll travel on Mekong Prestige II, which has a sun deck and plunge pool where you can relax and watch the ever-changing life on the waterway and its banks.

4. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

best time for mekong river cruise

Meander down the Mekong in style with the luxury line Uniworld. With its elaborate woodwork and elegant fittings, the 68-passenger Mekong Jewel resembles a floating boutique hotel. There are marble bathrooms throughout and a pair of plush Royal Suites with four-poster beds. Along the way you’ll board traditional wooden sampans to explore the Mekong Delta and sail past floating villages and along small creeks to reach Evergreen Island. Here, there’s a rickshaw ride past houses built on stilts; an essential precaution during the rainy season when the Mekong rises and spills into the communities lining its banks.

5. Lotus Cruises

best time for mekong river cruise

The 12th-century temples of Angkor, the world’s largest religious complex, are among the top sights on a Mekong cruise and Lotus is among the lines offering fully escorted tours to ensure you don’t miss any of the highlights. The scale of the temples outside Siem Reap is awe-inspiring — they include Angkor Wat with its distinctive beehive-shaped towers and Ta Prohm, entwined with massive tree roots. For the best of both worlds, there’s a 15-night itinerary combining a seven-night Mekong sailing and a city break in Ho Chi Minh City, as well as a luxury three-night beachfront stay at the Anantara Mui Ne Resort & Spa in southeast Vietnam .

Viking Saigon, which launched in 2022, is one of the newest ships on the river and sister ship Viking Tonle sets sail in 2025. Unlike the majority of vessels which draw on traditional Vietnamese and Cambodian decor, Viking Saigon is furnished in the line’s understated Scandi style. Viking’s 14-night itinerary begins with a two-night stay in Hanoi , the Vietnamese capital. On the Mekong there are plenty of cultural excursions such as a performance of Cambodia’s Apsara dance which dates back to the seventh century and is characterised by graceful hand movements.

8. Wendy Wu

From here you’ll fly to Phnom Penh to join the Victoria Mekong for a three-night cruise. This contemporary ship carries 70 guests and is very well-equipped, with a spa, infinity pool and swim-up bar. Flying on to Hanoi, the holiday ends with an overnight cruise on the tranquil green waters of Unesco-listed Halong Bay.

For a real taste of the destination, APT’s excursions include a visit to the colourful food market in Hoi An followed by a private Vietnamese cookery class. The food theme continues in Cai Be, reached from the Mekong, to discover how translucent Vietnamese rice paper is made and even have a go at making it. Moving to Sa Dec, literature fans can visit the home of Huynh Thuy Le, once the paramour of French novelist Marguerite Duras and the inspiration for her book The Lover . If you’ve got time to spare, APT has Mekong land and cruise tours of up to 22 nights.

Adventurers who want to head off the beaten track should look at the small-ship line Pandaw. With their shallow drafts, Pandaw vessels can venture further upstream and deeper into the Mekong Delta than those of other lines. Itineraries include a ten-night sailing specifically geared to exploring remote waters and smaller tributaries. On shore tours you’ll be immersed in village life and join locals around a fire pit for evening cocktails and to watch a traditional dance show. Pandaw’s ships, carrying up to 60 guests, are equally atmospheric and hand-finished in brass and teak by traditional craftsmen.

5 of the best Mekong river cruises

The Mekong River rises in China’s Tibetan Plateau and drains a large part of Southeast Asia, finally meeting the south China Sea in southern Vietnam. It’s a vital lifeline for the entire region too, with villages and towns dotting its entire length as it passes through, or defines the border between, all countries in this part of Asia, including Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Perhaps unsurprisingly then, extended boat tours and river cruises are an extremely popular way to explore the area, from a few days to tours of a week or more than incorporate additional side-trips away from the Mekong.

When planning to take a longer cruise along the Mekong, it’s useful to note that the river’s course passes the capital cities of Laos and Cambodia, Vientiane and Phnom Penh, while the delta is easily accessible from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in Vietnam. That makes tours that depart from one place and end in another particularly popular, and perfect for longer trips or backpackers who want to incorporate the journey into an onward itinerary. There’s plenty of other factors to consider before booking however, such as the river cruise itinerary, value for money, comfort on board, and the health and safety record of the tour companies. Of the myriad tours available, here are five of the best based on those factors and more.

When making your decision, only go for a reputable agency that meets your needs and preferences.

Consider Your Budget

Another essential factor that you need to consider is your budget . You definitely don’t want to spend all your life savings on a single trip. Certainly, you will find a cruise that suits your pocket size. However, this will determine the length of your trip, the quality of services you get during your cruise, and the level of luxury you get to experience.

Regardless, it is important that you get the best services for your money. Therefore, make sure you examine the perks of the cruise line that you find and pick the one that best suits your budget.

Consider The Cruise Size

Tourism is best done in groups, but the size of the group will vary from one cruise line to another. An overcrowded cruise can affect the quality of services offered to individual persons. However, when the group size is too small, tourism might not be as interesting as it should be.

If you are not going on a solo trip, a medium-sized cruise ship is the best option for tourism. Apart from enjoying the beautiful scenery on the sites, you also get to meet new people and have a wonderful experience on the ship.

It is important that you do not limit your fun and excitement to activities but also be prepared for a good time with other tourists around you.

Consider Your Bucket List

If you plan to visit the Mekong River, you should have a bucket list of some of the important places you want to visit and the kind of experience you want. The Mekong River is very long, cutting across different countries, so it’s impossible to explore it all on a single trip. This is why you have to decide on the places that are of importance to you and ensure the itinerary of the cruise covers the places you wish to visit.

While some people prioritize visiting historical sites such as the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, which is located in Phnom Penh, there are also many cultural sites on the Mekong River. This includes The Buddhist temple, Vinh Trang Pagoda, and Luang Prabang . Some people might also prefer visiting the floating markets, such as the Cai Rang floating market.

If you take a Mekong Tour without visiting your sites of interest, you might have an exciting tourism experience but not necessarily be satisfied. The goal is for you to have a smooth, fun, and satisfactory Mekong cruise experience that covers all the places you really want to see.

Mekong River sunset

Consider The Various Seasons

You should know that the Mekong River does not have an all-year-round temperature. The best time to consider for your cruise is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. The weather is warm during the day and chilly in the evenings, giving the perfect tourism ambiance. Also, the river is at the lowest level, which makes it easier to navigate.

However, there is usually a high influx of tourists in the peak season, which causes a spike in the prices of things. So, if you want to avoid the crowds and get the best deals, consider traveling in the shoulder season, which runs from May to October.

There Is A Perfect Cruise For You!

Cruising the Mekong River promises to be fun and exciting, offering a glimpse into Southeast Asia’s vibrant landscape, culture, and tradition. Whether you want to immerse yourself in the region’s natural beauty or explore historical temples and floating markets, there is a perfect cruise that suits your needs and preferences.

In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the best time to indulge in a Mekong River cruise, ensuring you make the most of your journey along this legendary waterway. Let's delve into the mesmerizing world of the Mekong.

Unveiling the Beauty of the Mekong River

The Mekong River, also known as the "Mother of Waters," meanders through Southeast Asia, stretching over 4,900 kilometers through Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Myanmar. This majestic river boasts diverse ecosystems, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant cultures along its banks. Cruise enthusiasts, nature lovers, and adventure seekers are drawn to the Mekong River to witness its untouched beauty and immerse themselves in the captivating local traditions.

Optimal Seasons for a Mekong River Cruise

Choosing the right season for your Mekong River cruise can significantly enhance your experience. Here, we present an overview of the optimal seasons to guide you in planning your unforgettable journey:

The Dry Season (November to May)

The dry season, spanning from November to May, is considered the best time to embark on a Mekong River cruise. During this period, the weather remains pleasant with less rainfall, allowing you to explore the river and its attractions extensively. From November to February, the temperatures are cooler, making it an ideal time to experience the charm of the riverbank landscapes, floating markets, and serene temples.

In March and April, the temperature begins to rise, but you have the unique opportunity to witness the vibrant festivities of the local New Year celebrations. May marks the tail end of the dry season, with occasional rains, providing a refreshing break to the arid climate.

The Wet Season (May to October)

The wet season, extending from May to October, presents a different yet equally captivating perspective of the Mekong River. During this time, the river's water levels rise, transforming the landscapes into lush green paradises. Witness the beauty of the surrounding rice paddies, listen to the symphony of raindrops, and navigate the flooded forests while marveling at the majestic wildlife of the region.

Although rainfall is more frequent during the wet season, it often occurs in short bursts, leaving ample time for exploration and relaxation in between. The vibrant shades of green, abundance of migratory birds, and the unique cultural experiences during this season make it a remarkable time to immerse yourself in the wonders of the Mekong River.

Key Highlights of a Mekong River Cruise

Regardless of the season, a Mekong River cruise promises to be an unforgettable adventure. Here are some key highlights that await you:

Where Is The Mekong River?

Do i need a visa to travel to the mekong river.

The Mekong River traverses multiple countries, so your visa requirements will depend on the cruise you want to take and your point of entry into the countries you will visit.

If you are taking a cruise from Vietnam to Cambodia, you will only need to acquire a Vietnam visa on arrival – your Cambodian visa will be stamped in your passport during the cruise.

However, if you are taking the downstream cruise and entering Vietnam on the river from Cambodia, most likely you will need to get your Vietnam visa before your cruise,  while the Cambodian visa can be easily acquired on arrival at the airport.

If you are cruising the Upper Mekong, you can get the Laos visa upon arrival at the airport or at the Thai border crossing, if your cruise starts in Huay Xai.

Do I Need To Get Any Vaccinations Or Malaria Tablets Ahead Of Travel?

Some travelers start taking malaria tablets before traveling to the Mekong River, but it is not a requirement. Your doctor may recommend that you get vaccinated for hepatitis A and B, typhoid, Japanese encephalitis, and yellow fever. You may also want to take precautions to protect yourself against mosquito bites.

What Is One Thing I Shouldn’t Miss Near The Mekong River?

There are countless sites and attractions along the Mekong River , one of the reasons it is such a popular spot for river cruises. On the Lower Mekong, the floating markets in the Delta  are a must-see. In the Upper Mekong, make sure to visit the Pak Ou Caves near Luang Prabang.

What Is The Local Cuisine Like?

Traveling along the Mekong River gives you the chance to try all different kinds of local cuisines. Southeast Asian countries are famous for their noodles and rice in many variations, and – along the Mekong – the local fish.

Dishes aren’t spicy and there are many vegetarian options. You can expect freshly made dishes using local vegetables, herbs, and soy or fish sauce to accompany them.

Mekong food specialities to try include the elephant ear fish and local rice pancakes popular in the Mekong Delta, in Cambodia its Khmer cuisine, and in Laos the lard and sticky rice.

Is The Mekong River Safe?

The Mekong River is a safe location. The only thing of which to be aware is that parts of it may be polluted. However, this should not be an issue if you are on a Mekong cruise. Practice good water safety and common sense and there is no reason you shouldn’t have a safe trip.

When Is The Best Time Of Year To Go To The Mekong River?

The most pleasant time of year for a Mekong River trip is between November and February. During these months, the weather is cooler and drier (especially in the evening) with no rainfall.

Although, if you are interested in entering Tonlé Sap Lake by riverboat, you should aim for the end of the rainy season (August – mid November) when the water in the river is naturally higher making the lake accessible.

Is The Mekong River a Good Family Destination?

Taking a Mekong River cruise with kids is possible but most Mekong boats don’t allow kids younger than 7 years old on board. The Mekong Delta is an exciting destination for the whole family , with activities such as cycling, agricultural and cultural experiences, school visits, and ancient temple exploration.

Is The Mekong River a Good Honeymoon Destination?

The Mekong River can be a great honeymoon destination depending on your tastes, especially around its delta . With breathtaking sights, unique cultural experiences, romantic accommodations aboard luxurious riverboats, and serene riverine vistas, the Mekong is ideal for newlyweds who want a remote and adventurous honeymoon.

Best time for a mekong river cruise.

Posted by David Porter on Thursday, May 4, 2023 · Leave a Comment

We are often asked about the best time of year for a Mekong River Cruise.

And with the Far East now open post-Covid, I thought an article on the subject would be helpful.

The best time for a river cruise on the Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia is during the dry season, which runs from November to April.

During this time, the weather is sunny and dry, with lower humidity and cooler temperatures, making it a comfortable time to explore the region.

The months of December to February are particularly popular for river cruises as the weather is at its best, and the river is generally at its lowest levels, making it easier to navigate the waterways. This is also a great time to explore the floating markets, villages, and temples along the Mekong River.

And while most Mekong River cruises will include Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, which are a thousand miles apart, I thought it might be helpful to consider the weather averages in those cities as well.

Hanoi Weather Averages

Hanoi has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. The average annual temperature in Hanoi is around 23°C (73°F), with average highs ranging from 17°C (63°F) in January to 32°C (90°F) in July. Here is the information on average temperatures, rainfall, and daylight hours for Hanoi:

  • January: 17°C (62.6°F)
  • April: 24°C (75.2°F)
  • July: 29°C (84.2°F)
  • October: 24°C (75.2°F)
  • January: 18mm
  • April: 87mm
  • July: 328mm
  • October: 102mm
  • January: 10 hours
  • April: 12 hours
  • July: 13 hours
  • October: 11 hours

Hanoi’s weather patterns can be unpredictable and may vary from year to year. The rainy season typically lasts from May to September, with occasional typhoons in August and September. The best time to visit Hanoi is during the dry season, from November to April when the weather is cooler and drier.

Ho Chi Minh City Weather Averages

Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical climate with two main seasons – a wet season and a dry season. The average annual temperature in Ho Chi Minh City is around 27°C (80°F), with average highs ranging from 31°C (88°F) in March to 33°C (91°F) in April. Here is the information on average temperatures, rainfall, and daylight hours for Ho Chi Minh City:

  • January: 26°C (79°F)
  • April: 29°C (84°F)
  • July: 27°C (81°F)
  • October: 27°C (81°F)
  • January: 13mm
  • April: 63mm
  • July: 221mm
  • October: 287mm
  • January: 11 hours
  • July: 12 hours

Ho Chi Minh City is hot and humid throughout the year, with occasional heavy rains during the wet season from May to November. The best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City is during the dry season, from December to April when the weather is cooler and drier. However, keep in mind that this is also the peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and larger crowds.

Jayavarman Cruise mekong

The Jayavarman Cruise named after Angkor’s most venerated king.

The majestic Jayavarman is considered the father in Heritage Line’s “family” of cruise ships. This vessel was named after Angkor’s most venerated king, a devout Buddhist who ruled from 1181 to 1218. Thanks to its intricate woodcarvings, Khmer bas-reliefs and Vietnamese lacquer paintings, this impressive cruise ship resembles a floating art gallery. Wherever they look, guests are reminded of the local arts and culture.

Travelling the Mekong between My Tho, the entry gate to the Mekong Delta, and Siem Reap, Cambodia, Jayavarman marries the art deco charm of 1930’s France with the romance of Indochina. Measuring 57.8 meters/190 feet from bow to stern, Jayavarman holds 27 elegantly decorated cabins.

With three-and-a-half decks, Jayavarman is as spacious as it is beautiful. Guests can admire Khmer artifacts in the Henry Mouhot Lounge, mingle in the Club 1930 Bar, dine in the elegant Indochine Dining Hall, and recharge with spa treatments in the Apsara Spa. The Jahan Cruise

The Jahan is Heritage Line’s most romantic cruise liner on Mekong.

Plying the slow, swirling waters of the Mekong, The Jahan is Heritage Line’s most romantic cruise liner. Considered the brother of The Jayavarman in Heritage Line’s “family” of cruise ships, this magnificent vessel was named after the Indian emperor Shah Jahan , who ruled the Mughal Empire from 1628 to 1658.

A great patron of architecture and the arts, Shah Jahan oversaw the construction of many legendary sites, including India’s dazzling Red Fort, and the famed 777 gardens of Kashmir. This cultured monarch is a fitting namesake for The Jahan, which evokes the opulent vessels of British India. No expense has been spared in the interior or exterior decorations, which showcase the talents of local woodworkers, weavers and artists.

the Jahan cruise

With three decks, this vessel offers all the amenities of a fine resort, including comfortable in- and outdoor lounges, an outdoor bar, a small boutique, dining room, fitness equipment and a steam room, as well as an excellent spa.

Stretching 70 meters/230 feet from bow to stern, The Jahan features 26 beautifully designed cabins on two decks, each with its own private balcony. Discover the bygone elegance of travel aboard the majestic Jahan. Just as Indian art and architecture influenced the Khmer and Cham cultures in the Mekong Delta, the stunning artistry of The Jahan will inspire you, as will the delta’s vibrant beauty.

Life aboard the Jahan will read much like a royal tale. As the rays of the morning sun glide across the balcony to your well-appointed room, you will be gently rustled from your slumber. It feels like you were taken back to a time when royals slept in whimsical abodes and awoke by the glow of the balmy sun – the mysteries of the day are yet to unfold.

rv tonle pandaw, mekong cruise

Modelled on Pandaw II and originally called Pandaw III, the Tonle saw a year’s service in Burma in March 2002 before being sent under tug-tow to the Mekong where she has done continuous service between Saigon and Kampong Cham ever since. With her gorgeous upper deck saloon, observation decks and formal dining room this ship is an old favorite and has a rich ambience. In 2013, she was fully refitted and the number of cabins reduced to just twenty-eight in order to create a professional spa and library on the lower deck. She is not a small ship but despite her size, she has a shallow draft and can usually get up river into low water areas when other vessels are stuck well below. Additionally, the ship has quality mountain bikes for your independent exploration.

RV Tonle Pandaw Cruise passes from the vibrant French colonial port of Saigon, through the vast delta so rich in human life and endeavour, to travel along the main channel into the rich countryside of Cambodia. With a full day in charming Phnom Penh, guests then explore remoter waterways as we progress to the great monuments of Angkor.

Ports of Embarkation: My Tho (Vietnam), and Siem Reap (Cambodia). Cruise duration: 8 days/ 7 nights. Price range: from $592.

The 9 best gay cruises for 2024 (+ planning tips).

Dance parties, drag queen performances and fun destinations await on these LGBTQ voyages.

The Best Gay Cruises

A party on board The Cruise With La Demence

Embark on an all-gay or LGBTQ-friendly cruise for excellent entertainment, food and excursions.

Whether you are looking to hop aboard a Pride Week cruise with a major line or sail away with a smaller company that specializes in LGBTQ voyages, the following cruise operators promise a fun, safe and memorable vacation.

(Note: While many of these cruise lines sail to LGBTQ-friendly ports of call, travelers should research destinations to learn more about cultures, customs and safety in each location and determine what's right for them.)

Travelers lounge on a gay cruise with VACAYA

Gabriel Goldberg | Courtesy of VACAYA

Founded by avid travelers Randle Roper, Patrick Gunn and John Finen, VACAYA bills itself as the first all-LGBT travel company in the full-ship charter/resort buyout sector of the travel industry to launch in more than 25 years.

"[VACAYA] was sparked by our own vacations, where we all had encountered two very different experiences," says Gunn. "The all-gay cruises were liberating, empowering and fun, but limited to a small spectrum of people. And while everyone loves a good time, there's more to a memorable vacation than just parties. Mainstream vacations offered more activities and destinations, and were accessible to a diverse set of people, but didn't always feel like a friendly, judgment-free environment."

As such, VACAYA set out to bring LGBTQ travelers from across the spectrum together in a welcoming, inclusive setting, while offering varied onboard activities and immersive itinerary options. Cruisers will enjoy traveling to ports around the world, in the Caribbean , the Galápagos, Europe , Antarctica and more. You can participate in shipwide events ranging from themed deck parties to performances by LGBTQ entertainers to rejuvenating yoga classes. Note that VACAYA's cruises are for adults only.

Previous cruisers had abundant praise for VACAYA's voyages, highlighting the company's responsiveness when booking and the kindhearted staff, as well as the genuine connections they made with other passengers on board. Many were also impressed by the events and entertainment options throughout their sailings.

In 2024, VACAYA will offer a number of voyages worldwide. The seven-night Caribbean Cruise on Celebrity Apex in February will sail round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, with several fun-filled days at sea in addition to stops in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Antigua. In August, VACAYA has a 12-night river cruise in Northern Europe on board Advance by Transcend Cruises; this sailing includes the Amsterdam Pride event. The 11-night Antarctica expedition on Atlas Ocean Voyages' World Navigator in December 2024 is sold out, but you can join the waitlist.

The Virgin brand has long been known for its celebration of the LGBTQ community, and cruise line Virgin Voyages is no different. The strictly adults-only cruise operator aims to provide a unique experience, with onboard tattoo parlors, impressive live entertainment, and dining options that include more than 20 eateries and menus created by Michelin star chefs. This line gets the stamp of approval from previous LGBTQ cruisers, who praise the ships' gender-neutral bathrooms, diverse staff and onboard shows with resident drag queens.

Virgin Voyages offers gay-specific sailings through travel companies like Atlantis Events, but its more mainstream itineraries still offer a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that attracts LGBTQ cruisers year-round. Virgin hosts a number of events during Pride Month each year, including deck parties and interactive social media campaigns.

"Each June here at Virgin Voyages, we like to go big for Pride Month with larger-than-life events … all monthlong," the cruise line says in a statement on its website. "It's an important time for us – both internally within our crew and for our sailors – to honor and celebrate the LGBTQ community; who for so long has had to continually fight for equality and the right to be seen, heard and included."

Virgin Voyages sails to a variety of LGBTQ-friendly countries, including New Zealand, Greece and Spain. In June 2024, consider a seven-night sailing aboard Scarlet Lady departing from Barcelona with stops in Marseille and Cannes in France as well as Spain's Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza.

The world's largest gay and lesbian travel brand, Atlantis Events was founded in 1991 and welcomes more than 20,000 travelers annually on LGBTQ vacations. For its all-gay cruises, Atlantis charters megaships from popular lines like Royal Caribbean International , Norwegian Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages in addition to smaller vessels with companies like Oceania Cruises so cruisers will have a fully immersive experience.

On board, travelers can enjoy all the perks these ships have to offer (think: pools, hot tubs, sports courts and plenty of dining choices), plus special events like drag performances, motivational speakers, LGBTQ movies on demand in each cabin and high-energy circuit parties across the ship.

"As an LGBTQ cruiser, you're looking for a ship with lots of entertainment, including dance parties and events," says Marcos Martinez, founder of Men Who Brunch, a Black gay lifestyle blog. "One of the best cruise [lines] for gay cruising is Atlantis, since you'll be able to meet hundreds of attractive men and party all day and night on the ship."

Atlantis hosts primarily gay men; women make up about 5% to 10% of bookings, according to the Atlantis website. Previous cruisers said the atmosphere on board was fun, friendly and welcoming, though some noted that the company's customer service could be better, especially when it comes to details about the cruise.

Due to the company's popularity, its three 2024 cruises are already sold out.

Travelers on an all-gay cruise with Brand g Vacations pose in front of the Taj Mahal

Courtesy of Brand G Vacations

Specializing in all-gay river cruises – and now luxury ocean liners – Brand g Vacations was founded in 2011 and explores destinations all over the world. Chartered river cruises typically welcome between 40 and 200 LGBTQ passengers (and their straight allies), which allows cruisers to get to know one another in a smaller setting. Guests tend to skew more mature (think: 40 and older), and the line attracts both men and women.

Onboard entertainment differs slightly from larger ocean voyages: Expect more cabaret-style entertainment than massive all-night dance parties. Cruisers will also enjoy performances by drag queens, gay Broadway stars and more, on top of typical river cruise perks like sightseeing and lavish meals. Past guests recommend choosing Brand g if you're looking for a well-planned, relaxed and luxurious experience over a busier, more party-heavy vacation.

Brand g aims to provide a nearly all-inclusive cruise experience , with Mercedes or small van airport transfers, upscale hotel stays prior to embarkation, and unlimited alcoholic beverages as well as meals included in the fare. As such, prices tend to be on the high end. Plus, cruisers can feel good about their trip knowing that Brand g donates to causes in the U.S. and around the world that assist LGBTQ refugees, AIDS organizations, LGBTQ centers and more.

In 2024, Brand g sails through unique waterways around the world, including the Amazon, the Loire, the Danube, the Mekong, and the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line's small cruise ship charters also take guests to Iceland, Spain, Morocco, Italy, Croatia and other European destinations.

Aerial shot of Celebrity Cruises ship Celebrity Apex at sunset

Celebrity Cruises sets the scene for an excellent vacation for gay travelers, from its extravagant annual Pride parties to its daily LGBTQ programming throughout the year. The mainstream line has received numerous awards for its inclusivity, receiving accolades from the Cruizie Awards, TTG Travel Awards and Travel Weekly's Magellan Awards for being one of the best cruise lines for LGBTQ passengers.

LGBTQ cruisers can start their vacations off on a high note with a special welcome party on the first night of their voyage to meet other travelers on board. After night one, there are other social events for gay cruisers to party and hang out together. Additionally, Celebrity Cruises was the first cruise line to legally marry a couple at sea in 2018, and it continues to perform same-sex marriages on its ships.

Past cruisers enjoyed their voyages with Celebrity, noting that the line was welcoming, the food was delicious, and there were plenty of areas to hang out as a group with fellow LGBTQ passengers or other companions throughout the ship.

Although all itineraries are gay-friendly, consider booking a sailing during Pride Month in June for an extra special experience. Onboard entertainment during this month includes guest entertainers, a flag raising ceremony, Celebrity's signature Pride Party at Sea and more. The Italian Riviera & France cruise will depart from Barcelona on June 8, 2024, on the new Celebrity Ascent; this 10-night Mediterranean sailing stops at ports in France, Italy and Malta. Private travel companies like VACAYA also charter Celebrity ships for all-gay voyages throughout the year.

Specifically marketed toward lesbians and LGBTQ women, Olivia has hosted more than 350,000 travelers by land and sea over five decades. Cruisers can choose between river voyages or ocean sailings to destinations around the world. On the lesbian cruises, expect a mix of nostalgic decade-themed dance parties, folk singers, writing workshops, karaoke and other activities. Cruisers can also relax poolside, spend some time in the onboard spa or take it easy in one of the ships' lounges.

Travelers who are looking to connect with others who share similar backgrounds can do so in one of Olivia's specialized programs. There are group and solo traveler meetups, as well as programs like Sisters, which is for LGBTQ women of color; Gen-O, for cruisers 40 and younger; Women in Uniform gatherings, for veterans and those currently in the armed forces; and events for OWLs (which stands for "older, wiser lesbians"). Past cruisers on Olivia's voyages report feeling a true sense of community and belonging on board, resulting in a fun, carefree trip.

In June 2024, set sail with Olivia from Edinburgh, Scotland, to Dublin on Windstar Cruises' Star Legend. Or, visit the islands of Tahiti on the line's Star Breeze in September. Other cruise itineraries include Alaska, the Greek Isles, Mexico and the Panama Canal.

Aerial shot of Royal Caribbean International cruise ship

Royal Caribbean International provides a welcoming and inclusive experience for LGBTQ travelers. The popular cruise line frequently partners with Atlantis Events to offer all-gay voyages throughout the year, but even the standard sailings earn praise.

Highlights of the sailings are the ships' entertainment options (including the Tony Award-winning musical "Mamma Mia!") and attentive staff, according to past cruisers. Itineraries typically include LGBTQ meetups at the beginning of each cruise for gay travelers to meet like-minded passengers. Outside of the sailing experience, Royal Caribbean has also publicly committed to supporting the LGBTQ community throughout the year, and it was the first cruise line to earn the title "Gay Traveler Approved" from GayTravel in 2016.

In 2024, consider a Royal Caribbean voyage that sails to gay-friendly destinations. "Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, [is] full of gay bars, clubs and gay beaches," says Martinez. Hop aboard Navigator of the Seas in May for a seven-night sailing round-trip from Los Angeles that stops in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Ensenada, Mexico. Navigator of the Seas also hosts a seven-night itinerary throughout the year that calls on Mazatlan, Mexico, as well.

A party on board The Cruise With La Demence

Courtesy of The Cruise With La Demence

According to past cruisers, if you're looking for one of the best party scenes on the open seas, consider an all-gay cruise with La Demence. Powered by a popular gay nightclub in Brussels with the same name, La Demence – French for "the madness" – primarily caters to a European crowd. Most passengers are male, though women are also welcome.

On board, passengers should expect to dance the night away at massive deck parties that last into the wee hours of the morning. The line prides itself on its top-notch DJs, impressive light setup and electric party atmosphere. Previous cruisers had high praise for the itineraries – which exclusively visit gay-friendly locations – as well as the fruity cocktails, themed nights (costumes strongly encouraged) and glamorous entertainment. Enjoy unique events like drag bingo, high heel runs and more.

La Demence sails every summer to European destinations like Greece, Italy and Malta. The 2023 cruise was chartered on Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas. Fares include all food and nonalcoholic beverages, plus access to all parties, shows and the onboard gym.

Source Journeys has been planning luxury vacations for LGBTQ travelers for more than 20 years. The Miami-based company, with the vision of founder and chief executive officer Craig Smith, offers small group land tours and full-charter cruises for like-minded travelers with a focus on giving back to the communities they visit. The company also supports LGBTQ organizations, such as the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force and the Human Rights Campaign.

Past guests of their tours say their fellow travelers were as fun and interesting as the destinations. They appreciated the excellent personalized planning for the trips by Smith and his life partner, Rafael Rodriguez.

The company's cruises in 2024 include a seven-night Galápagos sailing in late September on a Relais & Chateau luxury yacht: Ecoventura's new ship, Evolve. The intimate ship accommodates just 20 passengers. Source Journeys is also offering a seven-night river cruise through Burgundy and Provence, France, in June on Avalon Waterways' Avalon Poetry II, as well as a seven-night voyage from Venice along the Dalmatian Coast. This ocean cruise scheduled in August is chartered on Star Clippers' masted sailing ship, Royal Clipper.

Frequently Asked Questions

When it comes to gay cruising, gone are the days of discreet "Friends of Dorothy" meetups. The term – a euphemism that dates back to the 1950s – was once used to indicate gay social events on daily cruise line programs, without explicitly calling out members of the community on board. It's a far cry from today's LGBTQ cruising industry, which loudly and proudly celebrates passengers from all walks of life.

According to experts, LGBTQ cruising is a market that will only continue to grow. Travelers can take their pick between cruise operators tailored specifically to queer communities and major cruise lines that offer festive Pride celebrations and inclusive onboard entertainment. As travel on the high seas continues to grow in popularity for vacationers, gay and lesbian travelers should consider setting sail on a fun-filled cruise vacation for their next trip.

When planning a cruise, vacationers should first consider what their ideal sailing looks like.

Gay-friendly vs. all-gay sailings: Cruisers should think about whether they'd like to travel aboard a gay-friendly mainstream line – such as Celebrity Cruises or Virgin Voyages – or opt for an all-gay, full-ship charter with a third-party vacation company.

"Each and every LGBTQIAPK person has a different level of comfortability in their 'outness,' " says Patrick Gunn, co-founder and chief marketing officer of LGBTQ vacation company VACAYA. Of VACAYA's all-gay charters, he adds, "For one magical week, our community gets to be the majority and live life out loud in the blissful utopia VACAYA creates on a gay cruise. That single change from being an always-minority to a sudden majority can have a profoundly positive real-world effect on individuals."

  • Travel style: Some cruise operators (think: Atlantis Events and La Demence) are known for their electrifying all-night parties, which may be perfect for gay groups of friends. Meanwhile, other companies like VACAYA and Olivia look to provide a more diverse selection of activities, ranging from tea dances (LGBTQ parties that, historically, included tea service) to philanthropic service activities to immersive onshore experiences.
  • Ports of call: Some of the most LGBTQ- and gay-friendly destinations for cruises include: Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Sydney; Barcelona, Spain; Taipei (Keelung), Taiwan; Helsinki; Quebec City; Auckland, New Zealand; Mykonos, Greece; Reykjavik, Iceland; Amsterdam; Tel Aviv, Israel; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and San Francisco. Countries that gay travelers may want to avoid include the Maldives, Jamaica, Morocco, Malaysia and Haiti, as homosexuality is illegal in these destinations.
