Do you feel your cruise photos are boring? Uninspired? If you are looking for ways to improve your photo-taking on your cruises, we have some cruise photo ideas for you!

Cruise photography is a lot of fun for me. As a result, I have taken thousands and thousands of photos on cruise ships. To make it simpler to give you ideas, I will focus on photo-taking onboard the ship only, not excursions. Along the way, I will include a few photos from our cruises to show you what I mean.

Good Cruise Photos

Everyone takes many of the same photos of certain things on cruise ships; it’s just what we do. When we are new to cruising, we get onboard, all excited, and pull out our phones or cameras to snap quick photos of everything in sight. Half of them end up in the virtual trashcan, but some are definitely worth keeping.

Here are some of the most common cruise photos that I see on social media, a good start to creating memories of your cruise through photographs.

  • A ship’s life preserver
  • Your feet as you sit in a lounge chair, facing the ocean
  • The view from your balcony
  • You holding a cocktail at every bar on the ship
  • Sailaway selfie
  • Titanic pose
  • Dressed up for formal night
  • Towel animals
  • Sitting by the pool, cocktail in hand
  • Your dinner/lunch/breakfast plate
  • Posing with the captain
  • Photo of the pilot boat
  • Sunrise/sunset/moon over the ocean
  • Suitcases left in the hallway on the last night
  • Standing at the railing on deck, looking at the ocean
  • Photo of the ship while docked
  • Sitting in a hot tub, sipping a frozen drink
  • On the pier with the ship in the background
  • The wake of the ship

Better Cruise Photos

If you want to up your game a little, you will have to get a little more creative. Try to tell a story with your photos, or take interest in small details. Wait for a good moment.

Here are some better cruise photo ideas:

  • Photos of details of your cabin or architectural details on the ship such as grand atriums
  • Photos taken from above or at an extreme angle of your meal
  • Photo of the ship taken from a tender boat
  • Selfie with your new port in the background
  • Selfie with a performer in costume after a performance
  • Selfie while sweaty and red-faced from having fun
  • The view framed by a porthole
  • A view of your port, taken from above on your balcony
  • A selfie in the mirror while getting your hair done at the spa
  • A shot of the length of a buffet station, taken from an angle in Portrait mode on an iPhone
  • A shot of a crew member posing for you
  • You with your favorite waiter, bartender, stateroom attendant or other crew member, being silly
  • Photos with you and your new friends you met onboard
  • Take a pic of somewhere dramatic on the ship at night
  • When you have an overnight in port, take a pic of the ship from the pier at night

Action Cruise Photos

Capture a moment, a memory, on your cruise while doing or watching something fun. Find an activity on the deck and give it a try, and have your partner take photos. Then switch!

  • Lining up a putt on the mini-golf course
  • Climbing a rock wall
  • Navigating an obstacle course
  • Crew members in action
  • Crew-versus-passengers pool volleyball game
  • The water stirred by the ship’s azipods
  • Cavorting under falling water in the kids’ splash zone
  • Try to get a photo of a whale or porpoises
  • Yourself or someone else going down a water slide

Artistic Cruise Photos

Artistic photos take more time, sometimes a little setup, and a bit of imagination. You have to think outside the box. Try some of these cruise photo ideas:

  • Looking out a porthole window, taken from behind
  • Breakfast on the balcony with the sunrise in the background
  • Pretending to hold up the setting sun, taken from behind
  • Toasting with champagne, hands only, in front of a sunset
  • Look up and take photos of details
  • A lineup of colorful beach chairs on deck
  • The atrium ceiling, taken while centered below

  • A tableau photo while dining
  • Tell a story with your photo

Brand-Specific Photos

Some photos can only be taken on certain cruise lines’ ships. For instance, a selfie with the funnel on Carnival. Since we primarily cruise on Celebrity Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line and they are what I know best, here are some brand-specific cruise photo ideas to try when sailing with them.

Celebrity Cruise Photos

Celebrity Cruises is known for its extensive art collection, scattered throughout its fleet, and its entertaining Martini Bar. Consider taking pics such as:

  • Posing in front of the iconic statue on the pool deck
  • At Eden, a photo of the chef while plating
  • The bartenders’ show at the Martini Bar, especially tossing bottles and shakers
  • Posing with fun ship art
  • Take a selfie with the X on the smokestack in the background
  • Have a picnic on the Lawn Club and take selfies
  • Have someone take a photo of you in one of the fun, wacky chairs aboard
  • Have someone take a photo of you in one of the hammocks in the solarium

NCL Cruise Photos

Norwegian Cruise Line is known for its massive atrium chandeliers, its theme parties, and its topside activities loved by kids and adults alike. Take photos that tell the viewer without words exactly where you are, such as:

  • Silent disco photos
  • Atrium chandeliers
  • Atrium staircases
  • Zipping around the track in a go-kart
  • Pose on the atrium staircase on formal night
  • Bowling a game in the bowling alley

Tips For Taking Better Photos Onboard

If you love taking photos, you probably want to get better at it. I know I do. Here are some general suggestions for getting better photos on your cruises.

Golden Hour Magic : Make the most of the soft, warm light during the “golden hour,” which occurs shortly after sunrise and before sunset. This light can add a touch of magic to your photos, especially when capturing outdoor scenes or portraits.

Rule of Thirds : Divide your photo into a grid of nine equal sections (like a tic-tac-toe board) by imagining two horizontal and two vertical lines. Position key elements along these lines or at their intersections to create a visually pleasing composition.

Foreground Interest : Incorporate interesting foreground elements to add depth and dimension to your shots. This could be a railing, a glass of a beverage, or even a decorative feature on the ship.

Leading Lines : Use natural lines on the ship’s deck, railings, or architecture to guide the viewer’s eye through the photo. These lines can create a sense of movement and draw attention to focal points.

Candid Moments : Capture genuine moments of joy and interaction among guests and crew members. Candid shots can showcase the authentic experiences that guests have on the cruise.

Reflections : Take advantage of reflective surfaces like glass windows, mirrors, or even water to capture intriguing reflections that can add a unique twist to your photos.

Experiment with Angles : Don’t limit yourself to eye-level shots. Try shooting from different angles—high above, down low, or even from unusual vantage points—to create dynamic and interesting compositions.

Symmetry and Patterns : Look for symmetrical compositions or repeating patterns in the ship’s architecture or design. These can create visually pleasing and harmonious images.

Details Matter : Zoom in on the intricate details that make the cruise ship special. These could be ornate decorations, fine textures, or even the little touches in the cabins.

Utilize Negative Space : Sometimes, giving your subject some breathing room within the frame can create a sense of elegance and sophistication. Negative space can also help direct the viewer’s attention to the main subject.

Capture Emotions : Focus on capturing emotions and expressions. Whether it’s a guest’s excitement, wonder, or relaxation, these shots can add a human touch to your image.

Editing Enhancement : After capturing your shots, consider using photo editing tools to enhance the colors, contrast, and overall look of your images. Just remember to maintain a natural and authentic feel.

Be Patient : Sometimes the perfect shot requires patience. Wait for the right moment to capture that perfect sunset, a playful interaction, or an interesting composition.

Remember that practice makes perfect, so don’t be afraid to experiment and try new techniques. Over time, you’ll develop your own style and a keen eye for capturing the essence of cruising.

Final Thoughts On Fun Cruise Photo Ideas For Your Next Trip

I have take a few cruises where I sat back and took very few photos, trying to be in the moment instead, and I have since regretted it. Photos are our way of preserving memories, an instant in time that we want to hold on to.

So, take those pictures! And on your next cruise, try to go a little further with your photography. But most of all, have fun with it.

Happy cruising!

Cruise Lingo: 65 Common Cruise Terms and What They Mean

Share this post:

If you’re a first-time cruiser, you might feel overwhelmed by the amount of cruise lingo that seems to be spoken by the crew and seasoned travelers. To help you navigate the cruise world, we’ve put together a list of 65 terms and phrases used on cruise ships and what they mean.

Cruise Ship Lingo

The bridge on a cruise ship is the control center, where the captain and the ship’s officers navigate the vessel. It is usually located on an upper deck at the front of the ship and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding ocean.

Celebrity Beyond Caribbean Cruise Review

A cabin is the private living space for passengers on a cruise ship. Cruise cabins have various layouts and square footage based on the category you choose. Standard cabins come with some basic amenities including a bed, a bathroom with a shower, a closet or storage space, a desk or vanity, and a TV.

3. Stateroom

A stateroom is more common cruise lingo used to refer to a cabin on the ship.

A cruise ship deck is essentially the same as a level or floor in a hotel or other building. Decks are usually identified by a number or name and are accessible by stairs and/or an elevator.

5. Lido Deck

The Lido Deck is the deck of the cruise ship where the pool and other outdoor activities are located. This is where most of the outdoor fun occurs, from sail away parties, to belly flop contests, and more.

Carnival Celebration Cruise Ship Review

6. Promenade Deck

The Promenade Deck is the deck that encircles the ship, often used for walking or jogging. This deck is usually located closer to sea level and can also be referred to as the Waterfront on some cruise lines.

7. Deck Plans

The ship’s deck plans are a diagram of the ship that shows the layout of each deck, as well as the location of cabins and all the public venues on the ship. The deck plans are great reference points to help you navigate your cruise ship like a pro.

8. Porthole

A porthole is common cruise lingo for a circular window on the ship. Some cabins have portholes, and you may also find these windows on the interior public decks.

The galley is the term used when referring to the kitchen on a cruise ship. Some cruise lines offer behind-the-scenes tours where you can visit this area, though it is usually off-limits to passengers.

10. Muster Drill

A muster drill is a mandatory safety drill that takes place at the beginning of each cruise. All passengers must complete this maritime safety requirement. Many cruise lines now offer “e-muster” drills, where you complete a majority of the drill by watching a video on your cruise line app or cabin television.

11. Muster Station

A muster station on a cruise ship is a designated location where passengers must assemble in case of an emergency. During your muster drill, you will need to check-in at your muster station, so you know where to go in the event of an emergency. These stations are usually located on the passenger decks, and your specific station is clearly marked on your keycard and stateroom door.

An azipod is a type of propulsion system used on modern cruise ships that features a pod with a propeller that can rotate 360 degrees for increased maneuverability. They are more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly, as they generate less noise and vibration. They also allow ships to move more quickly and easily in tight spaces and adverse weather conditions.

13. Stabilizers

Stabilizers are devices used to reduce the ship’s movement and increase stability, especially in rough seas. They work by reducing the rolling and pitching motion of the ship, which can help to prevent seasickness and make the cruise more comfortable for passengers. Stabilizers can also improve the safety of the ship by reducing the risk of capsizing.

14. Passenger Manifest

A passenger manifest is a list of all the passengers on the ship. It lists the names, nationalities, and other personal details of all the passengers and crew members onboard the ship. It is essentially a complete record of everyone who is traveling on the ship at any given time. The passenger manifest is also used by immigration and customs officials when the ship arrives at its ports of call.

MSC Seascape Cruise Ship Scorecard Review

A ship’s wake is the visible trail of disturbed water that is left behind a moving vessel as it travels through the water. Wake views are some of the most desirable on a cruise ship, often with aft-located bars and lounges to admire the views.

A knot is a unit of speed at which ships travel. It is equal to one nautical mile per hour.

17. Dry Dock

A dry dock is a facility where the ship can be taken out of the water for repairs and maintenance. Cruise ships will routinely go into dry dock for upgrades and enhancements in addition to routine maintenance.

18. Refurbishment

A refurbishment is the process of renovating an existing ship to improve its functionality, aesthetics, and overall performance. A ship undergoing refurbishment is taken out of service for a period of time to enter dry dock for upgrades. Cruise lines can use various terms to designate that a ship has undergone recent renovations, like Royal Caribbean’s “amplification”.

Directional Cruise Lingo

Aft is a directional term that refers to the back of the ship. This term is referenced frequently, including when picking out stateroom locations on a cruise ship.

20. Forward

The opposite of aft is forward. Forward is the directional cruise lingo for the front of the ship. Again, this term is often referenced when picking out your cruise ship cabin or when giving directions to venues on the ship.

The bow of the ship is located at the very front of the vessel and is the part that cuts through the water as it moves forward.

Cruise Lingo: 65 Common Cruise Terms and What They Mean

The opposite of the bow is the stern. The stern is the complete rear of the ship. It is usually flatter and wider in shape than the bow.

23. Midship

As the name implies, midship refers to the middle part of the ship. When reviewing cabin locations, midship cabins are the most desirable especially for those who are prone to seasickness on a cruise. You will usually feel the least motion here.

Port or Portside is the left side of the ship when facing forward. Portside and starboard side are terms that you will hear quite frequently on a cruise. This is especially true when there are wildlife sightings. The Captain or expedition team members will refer to the location with these directions.

25. Starboard

Similarly, Starboard, refers to the right side of the ship when facing forward. This is the opposite side of the ship from Port. Some easy ways to remember these directions is that port and left both have four letters or it’s P.S. (as in a postscript of a letter) when facing forward.

Cruise Staff Terminology

26. cruise director.

The Cruise Director is the person in charge of organizing all the entertainment and activities on the ship. He/She will usually also have an activities staff that will host events during the cruise. The Cruise Director’s main role is to ensure that passengers have a fun and memorable time.

27. Captain

Much like a boat, a cruise ship has a Captain. The Captain is the highest-ranking officer on a cruise ship, responsible for the overall operation and safety of the vessel. Becoming a cruise ship captain typically requires years of experience and training in the maritime industry.

Celebrity Beyond Caribbean Cruise Review

28. Guest Services

Guest Services is the department on the ship responsible for assisting passengers with their needs and inquiries. Most cruise ships have a Guest Services desk located in the atrium area that is easily accessible. Don’t be surprised to find a line of passengers here at any given time during the cruise.

29. Cabin Steward (or Stateroom Attendant)

The Cabin Steward or Stateroom Attendant is the crew member responsible for cleaning and maintaining the passenger cabins. Think of this person like a housekeeper at a hotel. This team member will replenish toiletries, towels, and linens in your room. They will also take care of any requests you may have and complete an evening turndown service on some cruise lines.

A porter is a crucial staff member on embarkation and disembarkation days. A porter will assist guests with their luggage at the cruise terminal. Typically, when you arrive at the ship, you will leave your larger bags with the porter and only take carry-on items onto the ship with you. They will then ensure the bags get delivered to your cabin later in the day.

Cruise Cabin Terminology

31. double occupancy.

Double Occupancy refers to the standard rate of occupancy on a cruise ship. Unlike hotels, cruise ship fares are based on two guests per stateroom. This means that the advertised price for a cabin typically assumes that two guests will be sharing the room.

32. Guaranteed Cabin

A Guaranteed Cabin is a cruise ship cabin typically booked at a lower fare with the understanding that a cabin in the category you chose will be assigned to you by the cruise line closer to the sailing date. This means if you book a guaranteed balcony cabin, you will receive a balcony cabin or better, but you will not be allowed to choose the location or the exact room number.

Nieuw Statendam Cruise Ship Scorecard Review

33. Inside Cabin

Inside Cabins are the most economically priced cruise ship cabins. Unlike a guaranteed cabin or a hotel room, cruisers can choose their exact room at the time of booking. As the name applies, these rooms are located on the interior of the ship and do not offer any view of the exterior. Further, these cruise ship staterooms tend to be the smallest double occupancy rooms on the ship.

34. Oceanview Cabin

An Oceanview Cabin is a cruise cabin with a window or porthole that offers a view of the ocean. However, these windows can not be opened. For the most part, the size and layout of these rooms are similar to inside cabins, just with a view of the outside world.

35. Veranda cabin

A Veranda Cabin is also referred to as a Balcony Cabin. By far, the most popular cruise cabin category on any ship is a balcony cabin. These staterooms feature private access to your own balcony. This outdoor space will usually come equipped with two upright chairs and a small table.

36. Solo cabins (Studio Cabins)

As mentioned previously, most staterooms are designed for double occupancy. A Solo Cabin, sometimes also referred to as a Studio Cabin, is designed specifically for solo travelers. These rooms are small but can save you a lot of money if you are cruising solo . Otherwise, you will often need to pay a single supplement. This is an additional fee that solo travelers must pay when booking a cabin that is designed for two guests.

37. Ship-Within-a-Ship

The most luxurious cabins on a cruise ship are suites. These rooms are larger and usually come with added perks. Many cruise lines feature special areas of the ship exclusively for these guests, sometimes referred to by the cruise lingo “ship within a ship”. These areas are designed so that guests never have to leave if they don’t want to- including sundecks, restaurants, lounges, bars, and more. NCL’s The Haven and MSC’s Yacht Club are two examples.

Everything You Need to Know About the Haven on Norwegian Prima

38. Pullman Bed

A Pullman Bed is a bed found in cruise ship cabins that offer greater than double occupancy. These beds are typically fold-down beds that are stored in the ceiling or wall when not in use. Your stateroom attendant will assemble this bed for you if there are third or fourth guests sailing in the cabin.

Cruise Lingo Used for Getting on and off the Ship

39. gangway.

A gangway is a ramp or stairway used to allow passengers to board and leave the ship. This moveable bridge connects to the dock and is usually adjustable in height to accommodate different water levels and ship heights.

40. Embarkation

Embarkation is the process of boarding a ship. Thus, Embarkation Day is the day the ship is accepting new cruisers for the next voyage. On your itinerary, embarkation day will be marked as Day 1. Once all cruisers are successfully on the vessel, the ship will set sail for its next destination, or the first port of call.

On embarkation day, it’s important to arrive at the terminal at your designated time and to have all essential items with you including your passport.

41. Disembark

Disembark means to leave the ship. Disembarkation Day is the saddest day of any cruise as it marks the end of vacation and a return to the real world. Disembarkation will begin once the ship has arrived back to its homeport, usually between 6 AM and 9 AM depending on the cruise line.

Guests can choose to complete a self-assist walk off. These guests will be the first off the ship but will need to take all their own luggage with them. Otherwise, guests will be called in a staggered fashion based on the luggage tags given to them the day before.

42. Port of Call

Ports of call are the destinations that the ship visits during the cruise. These ports will be listed on your cruise itinerary. During time in port, guests can disembark the ship to explore on their own or participate in organized shore excursions. The number of ports will vary and the amount of time spent in each port will also vary based on the itinerary.

Cruise Lingo: 65 Common Cruise Terms and What They Mean

The berth is the space where the ship is docked or anchored. Ports of call will have designated berths that are designed to accommodate larger cruise ships and allow passengers to disembark in the port.

44. Tender Port

If cruise berths are not available, the port will be designated as a tender port. A tender port is a port where the ship cannot dock and will anchor offshore. Passengers must then be transported to and from the ship via smaller boats.

A tender boat, also known as a tender, is a small vessel used to transport passengers from a cruise ship anchored offshore to a port of call that does not have a dedicated cruise berth or a deep enough harbor to accommodate the larger cruise ship. The ship’s lifeboats are often used as tenders to bring guests ashore. This process does take a little while so it’s important to plan excursions accordingly.

46. Port Charges

When booking a cruise, you might notice an added fee of port charges and taxes on the total fare. Port charges are fees paid to the port by the cruise line for the use of their facilities. The cruise line then passes this surcharge onto passengers. These fees are mandatory and are charged on a per person basis. The cost will vary based on the number of ports and the specific ports on the itinerary.

Cruise Lingo: 65 Common Cruise Terms and What They Mean

47. Shore Excursion

A shore excursion is a guided tour or activity that passengers can book while visiting ports of call. These tours can range from walking tours and city highlights, to food tours, to snorkeling, to various adventure activities like ziplining or ATVs. These shore excursions can be booked directly with the cruise line or through local vendors.

48. Ship Time

When going ashore, especially if you are not participating in a cruise-sponsored shore excursion, you will need to know what Ship Time means. This is the time on the ship, which may differ from the local time at the ports of call.

When cruise ships are visiting destinations in multiple time zones, they may not change the time on the ship at every location. Thus, when the cruise line provides a time to be back onboard the ship, it will always be in “ship time” so pay attention.

49. All Aboard Time

The All Aboard Time is the time passengers MUST be back onboard in order for the ship to set sail to its next destination. The All Aboard Time is usually a half hour before the ship’s scheduled departure time. It is extremely important that you adhere, otherwise you might be left behind.

Of note, if you are on a cruise-sponsored excursion that is running late due to traffic, the ship will wait for the tour to return; however, this is not the case if you are exploring on your own.

50. Pier Runners

Now, cue the pier runners. A Pier Runner is the cruise lingo given to passengers who are late arriving back to the ship. In an attempt to not miss the ship and incur expenses for getting to the next port on their own, these passengers run down the pier to catch the ship. Don’t be a pier runner, as you will most definitely be caught on camera and shared across social media!

Cruise Lingo: 65 Common Cruise Terms and What They Mean

51. Sea day

Cruise sea days are the days when a cruise ship is at sea, traveling from one port to another without any stops. These days can be an enjoyable part of the cruise experience for many passengers, as they provide a chance to relax and unwind while enjoying the various onboard activities and amenities.

52. Turnaround day

Turnaround Day is the day the ship arrives back at its homeport and prepares for the next group of passengers to embark. This is a stressful day for the staff, especially the stateroom attendants, as they need to clean and change everything over for the next set of passengers in a very short amount of time. So, be courteous and leave your room by the time requested on the morning of disembarkation.

53. B2B Cruiser

If you are a B2B (back-to-back) cruiser, you will still need to participate in an abbreviated version of turnaround day. B2B Cruisers are those sailing on two or more consecutive voyages on the ship. Passengers staying on the ship will still need to clear customs in the terminal, receive a new cruise card, and then re-board the ship. Unlike disembarking passengers, they do not need to take all their luggage with them; staff will take care of moving their belongings to their new stateroom if applicable.

54. Repositioning Cruise

In simple terms, a Repositioning Cruise is a voyage that begins and ends in a different location with the purpose of moving the ship to this new location. Repositioning cruises typically occur when cruise seasons change. For instance, some ships in the Caribbean move to Europe for the summer season. Other ships reposition to Alaska for the summer season.

A transatlantic cruise travels between Europe and North or South America. Obviously, the cruise ship will sail across the Atlantic Ocean. These cruises can be a repositioning cruise; though, some lines sail this route regularly like Cunard.

What it is like on the first Princess Cruises cruise

55. Shoulder Season

When it comes to cruise lingo, the term Shoulder Season is often used when referring to seasonal cruise ports like Alaska . The shoulder season is the beginning or end of the season. In terms of cruising these seasonal destinations, the shoulder seasons usually provide the cheapest prices and fewest crowds. While the weather might be a bit unpredictable, this is an ideal time to travel for many cruisers.

Onboard Cruise Lingo

56. cruise card.

A cruise card, also known as a key card, is a small plastic card issued to each passenger on a cruise ship. The card serves as a key to your stateroom, as well as identification when getting on and off the ship at ports of call. This card is also how you will pay for all purchases while onboard the ship. Some cruise lines have wearable devices that replace this key card, like Princess Cruises’ Medallion or Virgin Voyages’ The Band.

57. Formal Night

While some cruise lines are doing away with this cruise tradition, many cruise lines still have at least one formal night. Formal Night, also referred to as “elegant night”, “evening chic”, etc., is a special dress-up evening on the ship. It’s when you can don your finest attire, attend a Captain’s Toast, take some photos, and maybe enjoy some lobster in the main dining room.

58. Freestyle Cruising/Dining

While most cruise line’s still have traditional main dining rooms with an early and late seating, many are starting to offer more flexible options in addition. Norwegian Cruise Line was the pioneer of Freestyle Cruising. This type of cruising doesn’t have fixed dining times or table arrangements, meaning that cruisers can choose when, where, and with whom they want to dine each evening. Other cruise lines now have similar options like “My Time Dining”, “Dine Anytime”, etc.

What's New on Norwegian Prima

59. Cruise Gratuities

If you are new to cruising, you should know that not everything is included in your cruise vacation. In addition to your cruise fare, there are other services charges for which you will need to  budget , including cruise gratuities.

Cruise Gratuities are a per person, per day dollar amount that are charged to all guests across all stateroom categories. These charges serve as a means to reward the hard-working crew for the excellent service provided during your cruise vacation.

60. Onboard Credit (OBC)

Cruise Onboard Credit , referred to as OBC in cruise lingo, is essentially “free money” to use on your cruise vacation. This credit can be obtained a variety of ways and can be spent onboard the ship on most cruise experiences. Some cruise lines even allow you to apply this onboard credit when purchasing items pre-cruise in your online cruise planner.

MDR is the abbreviation cruisers use when referring to the Main Dining Room on a cruise ship. On all cruise ships, the MDR is complimentary to all passengers. The main dining room(s) is always open for dinner, serving a multi-course rotational menu. It can be open for select hours for breakfast and lunch as well.

If you opt for traditional dining, you will be assigned to an early or late dinner time at the same table with the same waitstaff every night of the cruise.

62. Specialty Dining

While there are many dining venues covered in the standard cruise fare, cruise lines also offer up-charge dining options and experiences referred to as specialty dining. These restaurants can range from steakhouses, to Italian trattorias, to sushi and hibachi, to seafood-centric restaurants, and other experiential venues. While they do cost money, these specialty dining experiences offer upscale service and menu options making for a special night out.

63. Lanyard

A lanyard is a neck strap that many passengers wear on a cruise ship to hold their cruise cards. Since having easy access to this card is essential, many cruisers enjoy the convenience of  a lanyard . Having one that you can detach at the bottom is a bonus to pass off to staff when ordering drinks, etc. Another popular option to store your cruise card is an adhesive pocket on your cell phone.

64. Towel Animal

Towel Animals are often made by stateroom attendants by folding towels into various shapes such as elephants, monkeys, or swans. These creations are left in your cabin during it’s daily cleaning or turndown service. While some might think this tradition is a bit tacky, we enjoy receiving these special surprises in our stateroom.

65. All-Inclusive Cruise

While cruises are a great value, not everything is included in the price of the cruise fare unless you are sailing with a luxury cruise line. Add-ons typically include things like specialty coffee, alcoholic beverages, specialty dining, shore excursions, WiFi, etc.

However, more and more cruise lines are beginning to offer All-Inclusive Cruise packages. These typically include a drink package, gratuities, and WiFi. Some packages might even include additional perks.

Now that you know the terminology, it’s time to start planning your perfect cruise vacation . When it comes to cruise lingo though, just don’t forget: It’s a ship NOT a boat !

What is a Cruise Ship?

A cruise ship is a luxury vessel that is used to take passengers on a pleasure voyage in a journey that is as much a part of the experience as the various destinations on the way.

In contrast to an ocean liner that transports passengers from one point on the globe to the other often across the oceans, a cruise ship or a cruise liner as it is known by most, takes the people on board to a round trip that is of varied duration, from a single day to possibly a week and culminates at the originating port.

This is a very refreshing mode of enjoyment and recreation, which relaxes the mind and replenishes energies to a great extent.

History of Cruise Ships

The present-day form of cruising can be traced back to the beginning of the twentieth century when transoceanic travelling was at its zenith.

The only mode of transport was the ships so the different companies that were in this business offered the best services to compete in the market.

These ocean liners with luxurious services offered what came to be known as line voyages. But because of the long journey, which at best would be no less than four days, there had to be huge storage for fuel and other necessities and that didn’t leave much room for luxuries.

With the advent of jet aeroplanes in the latter half of the last century, there was a shift in passenger preference and the long sea voyages were left for only the ardent sea fans.

The Advent of Cruise Ships

This situation was ideal for the launch of a cruise ship. It needed something strikingly different and exciting to bring back the interest of the people to sea voyages and this is where these trips gained popularity.

Considering the fact that the journey is relatively short with many stoppages at exotic locations, the ships are designed accordingly, thereby making more room and utilizing that space for an open design that exudes extravagance. It would be appropriate to liken a cruise ship to a floating hotel complete with a hospitality unit amongst other crew members.

Facilities on Cruise Ships

The facilities onboard these cruise liners include great dining services. Some liners offer open-air dining on the deck, whereas, there are others that have expensively designed dining halls with mouth-watering recipes to leave a long-lasting impression on the passengers.

In addition to this, there are casinos, fitness centres, spas, cinemas, and some ships even have a Broadway-like theatre. These cruise ships also boast swimming pools, hot tubs, lounges, libraries, gyms and clubs.

To put it in a nutshell, they pamper the passengers with the best of hospitality and services that can be imagined with some of the choicest natural views along the sea.

Over the last decade, cruising has become an integral part of the tourism industry contributing over $25 billion yearly to this booming sector. The major bulk of the business as expected comes from the North American and European regions but the other areas like the pan pacific are also catching up.

Disappointing photos show what it's actually like to go on a cruise

  • I took a seven-day voyage on one of the largest cruise ships in the world , my first cruise ever.
  • I found the reality of cruising didn't match my expectations from social media and promotional ads.
  • I spent much of my time battling crowds, waiting in lines, and sitting on hot tour buses.

Insider Today

I booked my first-ever cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas in April 2022. The seven-day Caribbean voyage on a mega-ship took me round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to port stops in Honduras, Mexico, and the Bahamas. I expected breathtaking views of the world between relaxing swimming and sunbathing sessions.

But my experience didn't quite meet my expectations.

Instead, I sunbathed in a loud, crowded pool area when I was lucky enough to find a chair. I spent more time waiting in lines than I had anticipated, and I saw much of the world from behind other people's heads.

Here's an overview of the most disappointing aspects of my cruise, from getting to the port to sailing across the region

The disappointment started before I was even on the cruise.

cruise meaning pictures

Since I don't live near my cruise's departure city, my trip began with a flight and a budget hotel room near my departure port in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

When I arrived at my port city's airport, I waited 45 minutes for a hotel shuttle to pick me up.

cruise meaning pictures

This was the first of many crowded bus rides during my trip. Looking back, I wish I had called a cab — especially since the next morning, I piled into a hot bus with several other cruise guests as I headed to the port.

There was a long line to get inside the cruise terminal, and I should have known by this point that I'd stand in many more lines during my cruise.

cruise meaning pictures

Inside the cruise terminal , there was another long line to get through security. While I waited, I chuckled to myself as I read signs that said, "Adventure begins here."

Once aboard the ship, I was excited to view the ocean as we sailed away, but I was blocked by tall, thick glass and couldn't find a place to stand.

cruise meaning pictures

My obstructed view of the ship leaving Fort Lauderdale made me feel as frustrated as standing behind tall patrons at a concert.

The ship was so large that I got lost several times during my stay.

cruise meaning pictures

But I found the maps on each floor to be helpful.

As I explored the ship, I was surprised that even a mega-ship could feel overcrowded.

cruise meaning pictures

While people seemed to enjoy themselves, many communal decks looked and felt like crowded malls.

The outdoor decks had 19 pools, plunge pools, and whirlpools accessible to guests. These spaces were crowded throughout the day. And even though there were rules against saving chairs with towels, I saw plenty of people doing it, so finding a spot to relax was stressful.

A Royal Caribbean representative told Business Insider crew members might remove items from lounge chairs after 30 minutes. Still, they must also consider families and groups who may be in the pool or going to the restroom when enforcing rules like these and must use their best judgment.

There were crowds and lines virtually everywhere I went.

cruise meaning pictures

From the buffet to activities like water slides and mini-golf, I felt like I spent more time waiting in line than enjoying the ship. For example, I waited in line for three hours to play a round of laser tag that was less than 20 minutes long.

At port stops, I waited in lines to go through security every time I left and returned to the ship. I found this less annoying than the other wait times since it made me feel safer.

The lines continued at each port, crowded with others excited to begin their tours.

cruise meaning pictures

I often had to battle through crowds just to find signs for my excursions.

It was exciting to explore new places at each stop, though some of this exploration was from the window of another hot bus.

cruise meaning pictures

A Royal Caribbean representative told BI the cruise line worked with local tour operators for its excursions, so air conditioning standards varied.

And when I was finally doing the cool thing I booked, like walking across a suspension bridge amid the treetops, my view was sometimes blocked once more by everyone else who booked the tour, too.

cruise meaning pictures

I hoped to capture an empty image of this majestic jungle bridge, but it wasn't possible without losing my tour crew.

According to a crew member I overheard, roughly 5,000 other people were aboard the ship, so I understand why the cruise felt so crowded.

cruise meaning pictures

I think that if I were to book a less crowded cruise next time, I might enjoy it more.

How to Choose a Room: Ultimate Guide to Carnival Staterooms

By Carnival Cruise Line

Before you book your cruise , you will want to know which stateroom you should call your own. Getting familiar with the types of staterooms helps you choose the sleeping space that offers you the most comfort based on your personal preferences and personality. It could also depend on whether you’re cruising solo, plus-one, with the family or as a group.

So how do you select the best stateroom to ensure you’ll have a relaxing, comfortable cruise? We’ll help you put it all together with the following suggestions.

Know the Stateroom Styles

When you’re on a Carnival cruise, you have your choice of stateroom styles and locations designated as Interior, Ocean View, Balcony or Suite.

  • Interior staterooms : The most affordable cruise ship rooms ideal for sensitive sleepers who prefer quieter rooms away from activities, making it the perfect spot to curl up after a long day of fun
  • Ocean View staterooms : Designed for gazing out at vistas and ocean views. It’s the best place on board to be the first to spot ports of call
  • Balcony staterooms : Ideal for enjoying sea breezes and stunning views on a patio with private seating all day
  • Suite staterooms: The best rooms on a cruise ship for stretching out and putting up your feet in a space with all the comforts of home, and then some
  • Specialty staterooms : Thematic settings that revolve around family, couples and more and are available as interior, ocean view, balcony or suite staterooms

If You’re Cruising Solo

When you’re solo, there’s no having to answer to anyone about where to go or what to do. You can cruise to Belize and explore the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins to fully release your enthusiasm for ancient history. Learn to cook like a chef onboard while meeting new friends. Another perk: having a stateroom all to yourself. Consider these ideas when booking a stateroom of your own.

  • Havana: Solo cruisers who also want to be social may like Havana staterooms with private access to the tropical Havana pool and bar area .
  • Cloud 9 Spa : If you’re cruising for more of a pampering experience for one, consider a specialty Cloud 9 Spa stateroom. You’ll be right next to the most relaxing place onboard, the Cloud 9 Spa ™ .
  • Interior and Ocean View : Choose an interior stateroom for the most quiet or an ocean view stateroom for contemplative views to complement your meditative state of mind.
  • Aft: Consider staying in the aft part of the ship where you’ll be nearest to casual dining.
  • Lower deck: The lower deck is the best deck on a cruise ship if you want to be one of the first off the ship, exploring all the fun at each port of call .

If You’re Cruising as a Couple

Couples who cruise together stay together, especially when choosing the perfect style stateroom. The perfect getaway means you’ll sail to dreamy ports. What couple wouldn’t enjoy a cruise to Mexico for a VIP Wine Tasting or to Aruba for a Jeep Safari ?

On board, dine in a romantic, floating Italian trattoria . Afterward, slip away to an enchanting stateroom reserved for just the two of you.

  • Cloud 9 Spa: Whisk away to the Cloud 9 Spa adjacent to specialty Cloud 9 Spa staterooms with relaxing decor. You’ll get priority spa reservations along with complimentary spa-inspired gifts to use throughout the cruise.
  • Balcony: Balcony staterooms are designed with couples in mind. You’ll be able to step onto your own little outdoor oasis at sunset for cocktails or sunrise for coffee in your robes.
  • Forward: If you’re seeking relaxation, consider a stateroom in the forward section of the ship. You’ll be close to the fitness center, spa and the show lounge for performances.

If You’re Cruising With Family

Whether you’re cruising as a single parent or times two with kids in tow, you’ll effortlessly pack in more fun activities and bonding time than you ever thought possible on vacation. No matter what age your kids, there’s plenty of onboard entertainment that lets your family interact with favorite childhood characters and games.

Shore excursions with no minimum age limits let you customize experiences for the entire family to enjoy, such as cruising to Alaska and going on a Dog Sled Discovery and Mushing Camp adventure. After a day, and night of fun and kid-friendly dining, head back to a comfy stateroom that suits your family .

  • Family Harbor: Family Harbor specialty staterooms with whimsical nautical decor have exclusive access to the Family Harbor lounge featuring breakfast, snacks, board games, family movies, video games and more. Kids eat free at Family Harbor restaurants. Plus, kids and parents will love the experience because they have one free evening of Night Owls ® babysitting service at Camp Ocean ™ .
  • Family-Friendly: Designed with families in mind, these staterooms accommodate up to five people and thankfully come with an extra bathroom. Great for groups too, thanks to connecting doors.
  • Upper deck: Consider a stateroom on the upper deck of your ship. You’ll be closest to the entertainment, fun and outdoor deck areas.
  • Midship : You’ll be right near the pool or waterslide areas, a kid’s dream.

If You’re Cruising With a Group

From an old college friend gathering to a ladies-only birthday bash or golfing buddy getaway, cruise ships are the perfect place for group vacations. Whether you have 10 or 20 people in your group, there’s something to do and see even if everyone differs in age, abilities and interests.

Cruise to Bermuda for an extended family reunion and reserve differing shore excursions ranging from the Famous Homes and Hideaway Cruise tour for architecture buffs to Segway Adventures for teens and a Glass Bottom Boat tour for little kids. Book staterooms extra early for groups, ask for connecting rooms and consider these stateroom styles.

If you have health or mobility challenges, Carnival proudly welcomes you on board. You’ll find plenty of accessible staterooms from which to choose, whether you are traveling with a wheelchair, scooter or another device. Consider staying in the midship section where you’ll find extra elevators.

Every stateroom has amenities (including your dedicated room steward) that rival land-locked five-star hotels. Expect soft, cozy linens, in-room safes, plenty of storage space, television, climate control and even bathrobes upon request.

Keep in mind that some staterooms and features are exclusive to specific ships, so be sure to check out the amenities on board the ship you choose. You’ll sleep well knowing you’ve chosen the right spot for snoozing while cruising.

Note: Onboard activities, shore excursions, and dining options may vary by  ship  and destination.

What is a cruise?

A cruise is a vacation on a large ship equipped with everything you need, from room and board to dining options and entertainment, while it travels across the ocean to various destinations. These destinations, referred to as port-of-calls, become accessible for exploration once the ship reaches them.

Why Go On a Cruise? Reasons to Take a Cruise Vacation

Cruises are (almost) all-inclusive , 1. there is an all-you-can-eat dining.

cruise meaning pictures

Food when traveling is an added expense. On a cruise, the food is included and is all-you-can-eat. As a fellow foodie to another foodie, the food alone is enough of a reason to go on a cruise.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks are  included with your cruise fare . There is almost always more than one location option to eat and room service (sometimes at an extra cost). And in the main dining, you can ask for seconds and even thirds. You will never starve on a cruise vacation.

Specialty restaurants are an additional, optional, and unnecessary cost.

2. Cruising can be cost-effective with its nearly all-inclusive package pricing

Cruising can be cost-effective because the upfront price often includes accommodations, meals, and entertainment, making it easier to budget for the overall vacation expenses.

You may still have to worry about airfare and pre- or post-cruise hotel stays and other expenses, like shore excursions. The cruise is the lump sum of your vacation and one you can also pay off a little if you book early enough.

Some cruises also offer package deals that include airfare and pre- or post-cruise hotel stays, further streamlining the travel expenses.

3. Cruise ships are like floating hotel resorts

A cruise is like a floating resort with spas, pools, gyms, restaurants, bars, dance clubs, and kids’ clubs. It’s an all-inclusive vacation experience on the high seas. You can relax or participate in cruise ship fun as much as you want.

By the same token, cruise ships come in all shapes and sizes. So, if you’re looking for an intimate cruise setting, you can cruise on smaller ships with a more boutique and luxurious feel. Yacht cruising and river cruising are also great options.

4. Cruises allow you to explore multiple destinations within a short time frame

One of the best parts about cruising is visiting multiple destinations within a short time frame. This allows you to discover and explore new ports of call you may never have visited. Opening up a new world of travel possibilities, adventures, and cultural experiences. Whether visiting historic landmarks of European cities, snorkeling in the Caribbean islands, or seeing your first whale while cruising Alaska, each destination offers a unique opportunity for exploration and discovery.

Of course, this has pros and cons, especially for slow travelers. However, if you’re short on vacation time per year, cruising helps you enjoy more of the world in a limited timeframe.

Cruises Are For Everyone

5. Cruises are family-friendly, so the fun extends to the kids too

Cruises are ideal for all ages and occasions, including kids. Kids are especially thrilled with the exciting options, including waterslides, rock climbing, and more. Many family-friendly ships even feature carousels and go-karts. Parents can also take advantage of kids’ clubs to carve out some relaxing time, knowing their children are making new friends and engaging in various onboard activities.

6. Cruises cater to solo travelers

Solo travel has become increasingly popular, and some cruises cater to solo travelers by offering discounted solo fares, dedicated cabins, social gatherings, and designated areas for those traveling alone. It’s a fantastic way to embark on a solo vacation surrounded by like-minded fellow passengers.

7. Cruises are a wonderful option for group vacations

Cruises are an excellent choice for family reunions or group vacations. They provide a wonderful setting for groups to unite, strengthen bonds, and enjoy each other’s company.

Cruising allows the option to either dine together or pursue individual preferences. While some may attend a show as a group, others prefer to unwind at a poolside party. Additionally, when the ship docks at port destinations, there’s the flexibility to plan group excursions or for everyone to choose their preferred activities for the day.

8. Adult-only cruises do exist if you’re looking for a no-kid zone cruise

If cruising with everyone, especially kids, does not appeal to you, don’t worry. Adult-only cruises do exist. Virgin Voyages is one of the top adult-only cruise lines worth checking out.

As a kidless cruiser, I can’t deny that I mostly cruise off-season to avoid when kids are off from school.

9. Cruises can be accessible for individuals with disabilities

Cruises can be accessible for individuals with disabilities. Many cruise lines have taken significant steps to ensure the comfort and enjoyment of all guests, offering accessible staterooms, wheelchair ramps, elevators, and various facilities designed to accommodate special needs. To make the most of your cruise experience, consider researching the cruise ships’ accessible cabins and the accessibility of the ports you plan to visit during your journey.

Entertainment and Activities On A Cruise Ship Are Fun

production show, choir of men, stage set on ncl encore

10. There are all-day activities and entertainment from morning to night

During your cruise, the Cruise Director and their team organize daily and night activities. You’ll receive a daily newsletter in your cabin each evening, listing all the activities for the following day. You can choose to join any that interests you. As the cruise director said on our Celebrity Solstice cruise, you can’t have fun if you don’t participate.

Here are some examples:

  • Musical performances
  • Themed parties
  • Silent disco
  • Morning Yoga or Zumba
  • Deal or No Deal
  • Trivia Games
  • Painting classes
  • Glass Making Demonstrations
  • Movie Times
  • Sport Challenges
  • Wine Tasting
  • Dance Instructions
  • Special Events
  • AA or LGTBQ Meetings
  • Single Meets

And, if you do a Disney cruise, you get to meet Disney characters and enjoy live Disney shows, movies, and more.

Note some of these may be an extra charge to participate.

11. The spa experience on a cruise

Spa services are available for those looking to treat themselves, although they can be pricey. Some people choose to cruise solely for the spa experience –we have a friend who does. It’s a great opportunity to indulge and pamper yourself. Sometimes, you can even buy spa passes to use the onboard thermal suite throughout your cruise.

The ship’s gym is open to all guests.

12. Cruises have onboard casinos

Most mainstream cruise line have casinos onboard their ship. If you like to have some fun gambling, you may choose to hit the casino at some point during your cruise. They will have tournaments and slot machine competitions, providing entertainment for those who enjoy gaming.

You may receive comped or discounted cruise offers for future sailings if you gamble enough. Never forget to insert your cruise card into the machines.

13. There is more than just the food at the buffet

While buffets are popular on cruises, they’re not your only dining option. Don’t worry; I know buffets are not for everyone. Cruise ships offer sit-down breakfast, dinner, and sometimes lunch. Many guests prefer dining in the main dining rooms at night. The menus at these dining establishments change every night, allowing you to enjoy multiple appetizers and entrees. However, some cruise lines are simplifying their main dining menus to reduce waste and offering fewer daily specials.

14. Specialty restaurants can be a delicious alternative

Specialty restaurants typically have extra costs (except on Virgin Voyages), but they can be a fun and delicious alternative for one or more nights of your cruise. The number of specialty restaurants and cuisines varies from cruise line to cruise line.

Sometimes, the per-person fee is quite reasonable. Making it worthwhile to sample one or two of these dining venues, especially if it’s a restaurant you normally wouldn’t find or eat at where you live.

In my experience, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the exceptional dining experiences at some of these specialty restaurants.

15. Cruises can cater to dietary restrictions

If you have dietary restrictions, don’t hesitate to go on a cruise. Cruise lines are known for their flexibility in accommodating special dietary requests. Inform them of your requirements before your cruise. Once onboard, ask to speak to the manager of the main dining and the head check. They do their best to prepare and accommodate meals that can work for you.

Cruises and Ocean Wonders

16. The ocean breeze and saltwater

Embrace the soothing sound of ocean currents, the smell of seawater, and the gentle caress of the ocean breeze as you step out onto your balcony’s cabin or take a leisurely walk on the lido deck.

17. Spotting wildlife from the cruise ship is magical

During your cruise adventures, experience the thrill of spotting sea life like whales, dolphins, and more. We’ll never forget all the wildlife we saw sailing to Alaska.

18. You’ll witness the most spectacular views

Enjoy breathtaking moments, whether it’s witnessing a Caribbean sunset or cruising past a city’s skyline, all from the unique vantage point of your cruise ship. It’s a different perspective you won’t get on land.

Cruise tip: Get that camera ready! Sailaway is a perfect opportunity to capture or take in the unique view of the city skyline or island you’re departing from.

A Cruise is a Worry-Free Vacation

19. Everything is at your fingertips

Enjoy a carefree vacation where everything you need is within easy reach on the ship.

20. No need to deal with the hassle of dragging your luggage around

Forget about dragging your luggage around! On a cruise, you can leave it behind at port while freely exploring and enjoying your day. No reason to pack and unpack to hop to another destination. You don’t have to look at luggage again until the day you disembark the ship .

21. Relax and let the captain steer the ship

Relax as the captain and crew expertly navigate the ship, transporting you to new destinations while you savor your time onboard. Waking up in a new destination is an exciting part of the cruise experience.

Cruise Loyalty Programs

22. cruise loyalty program can have its benefits in the long run.

Cruise frequently and accumulate points to unlock additional perks and benefits for your future cruises. Cruise loyalty programs offer remarkable rewards and benefits that, as a devoted cruiser, can save you money as time goes on. Going on a cruise is another reason that you can rack up those loyalty points toward perks, including credit card points.

Quick Tips to Book a Cruise Vacation

  • Research and compare rates and perks from different sources if you don’t have a travel agent.
  • Check promotions on cruise lines’ websites.
  • Compare these promotions with offers from other travel sites.
  • Consider consulting a reputable travel agent.
  • Booking with an agent may result in additional perks, such as onboard credit, to enhance your cruise experience.

FAQs About Why Cruises

UM, LOVE THE NEW BLOG THEME. Hehe. Rocking it! I thought it looked familiar ; ) LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! The font for this comment alone is banging. Pipdig rocks.

Also, can we talk about that gorgeous picture of you with an equally gorgeous drink? Yesssssss!!!

Ok, so you know I am not a cruiser (motion sickness), but I do love this post. I have friends who only go on cruises 200% for all inclusive food and drinks (with an extra $$$ package). They seriously come back 10 pounds heavier and relaxed. It is SO tempting. Plus, they get to see anywhere from 2-10 bucket list places all at once.

What is equally appealing is the worry-free part that you mention. We have so much to plan and driving around the world can be stressful. I think back to wayward Irish sheep, narrow roads, and driving on the wrong side of the road.

You make cruising sound amazing. Maybe one day…

Glad you rocked out a blog post before your amazing adventure. I CANNOT WAIT for you!! Share, share, share! Have fun, don’t stay on social media too much, and I’ll miss ya in between.

Christine of The Uncorked Librarian

P.S. I just ate chocolate so this post sounds extra HYPER. Oops.

Thank you for the theme comments. As soon as I saw it, I thought, that’s the theme for me and the rest is history! I have some tweaks to make and I will eventually get to them, but we are always working on our blogs, aren’t we?

I love that picture of me too! It’s one of my favs. I felt great. Probably because I had lost over 10 lbs a couple of months before because of gallbladder surgery. My skin was glowing too! This trip my skin was not glowing because I had stress acne… ugh. At least I can always look back at this photo of me holding a French Manhattan.

I’ll be sharing a ton of new content soon! Stay tuned.

Okay, I’ve got to hand it to you, you really are selling me on this cruise thing. I’m still kind of nervous about the idea, but it does sound so nice. I want to see dolphins and/or whales and see land from the perspective of the boat! I want to read a book by the pool with a cocktail (or two or three), I want all you can eat food, I want to see a bunch of places in one week, and towel animals!? I’m kind of sad that there won’t be any towel animals in my apartment tomorrow. If you read this, please capture pics of all the towel animals you get! ? I also love your idea of calling the night before for a coffee wake up “call.” You’re brilliant! Okay, I booked it!! I’m joining you guys on your cruise tomorrow! ??

Have an amazing and wonderful time! We will all miss you here but enjoy!!!

I have to be honest, this cruise was not the one I would have brought you on. The ship was, eh. It was pretty closed off and not what I’m used to. Not the cruise experience I would have recommended for you as your first one. The itinerary was fantastic though and i think you would have loved it… and the towel animals. 😀 Thanks so much for you great comments. Made me smile.

Great post! Love cruising!!

Thank you for stopping by!

A Western Mediterranean cruise…….that sounds really lovely! My hubby and I love short cruises. We’re dreaming of taking longer cruises someday to various destinations. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and tips with us. By the way, the towel animal is soooo cute! Have fun on your next cruise!

We’re back from our cruise and the itinerary was fantastic. The ship was just okay, but it got us to multiples places we enjoyed so thats what matters now. Hubby and I are always looking at long short weekend cruises but unfortunately we do no like the itineraries that leave from California. I definitely recommend trying for a longer cruise and if you’re all about the destinations, pick one with that doesn’t have too many sea days. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

I must say I have a love/hate relationship with cruising too. Everything you listed above are definitely the perks of cruising. I love the almost all-inclusivity of a cruise and the fact that there’s always something to do, even on a sea day. Unfortunately, I get land sickness for at least a week after being on the boat ?.

That happened to me after a cruise a few years ago, but it only lasted a couple of days. I was afraid of it happening again on our next cruise, so far, so good. Maybe our bodies are telling us we need more cruises in our life to adjust? Hope you don’t get sick next time.

It’s been many years since I was on a cruise, but I still remember all the wonderful food…anytime we wanted it…and the anticipation of seeing how our robes or towels were shaped on the bed when we returned to the room in the evening. Good memories!

Those are some great memories to have. 🙂

I have always wanted to go on a cruise. I have not yet managed to do it. I am hoping in the next couple of years I can cross it off my bucket list.

I hope you do too! Another reason I love to cruise (which I didn’t mention above) is that you can brook a great deal a year, two and sometimes even three years in advance. You can place a downpayment (sometimes they have low downpayment specials) and you pay it off slowly. Just make sure you find out what your final cancellation date with full refund is, just in case. Wishing you a great future cruise (cause I know you’re going to make this happen for you) and don’t hesitate to contact me for any advice.

Very informative. I am still torn on whether I want to go on a cruise at some point. I love the water, but I really also like being on land. Though admittedly, I do feel that after reading your cruise-related posts that I would enjoy a cruise as long as I picked the right one.

I love the sea. I enjoy being out in that great big ocean but I need off the ship after a day. I understand what you mean. I always look at the itinerary and make sure there are more days at port than sea days. That’s just what works for us. I know others that like the sea days and that’s great, but not for me. Make sure to compare itineraries available and you should find something that works for you. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

I really enjoyed reading this! I have so many mixed feelings when it comes to cruises…I went on one when I was in 4th grade (so Forever ago), but since I’ve gotten older the idea hasn’t appealed as much to me, as I think I’d feel antsy and prefer to get up and go when I want. I also worry about feeling rushed on each of the stops…but I have to say you highlighted so many convincing benefits in here that I may just have to give it another shot! Great work, there were points in here I never would have considered (like dolphins!!)

I still have mixed feelings about cruising myself. I have a lot of love for it, but there is a ton I don’t love about it, like being rushed. I will write cons about it all in the near future. After this European cruise, I think I appreciate cruising the Caribbean more. Not sure if I can cruise Europe again unless if it is a smaller part of a bigger adventure. I want more time at the ports. It didn’t feel quite the same as when cruising the Caribbean. For you, I suggest trying to see if there are any long weekend cruises to like the Bahamas or something for cheap to try out. Also, there is a week cruise that goes out of NY to Bermuda which I’ve been dying to do and its at the Bermuda port for 3 days. Just some suggestions. It is a cost-effective way of having a vacation sometimes and it’s different. Anyways, thanks for stopping by and commenting! Really appreciate it!

I see I have stumbled upon one of your more recent blog updates! Going back to revise old posts is always fun, haha!

So, I’ve never been one for a cruise. I hate the thought of being surrounded by so many people all the time – especially children! However, the thought of venturing on a cruise seems a bit more tolerable than I once thought. And the more that I read your cruising adventures – the more it calls out to me! No luggage hopping? Yes, please! At least I’d like to try a cruise once! (Alaska!) I don’t know if I could handle more than a few days – and I am totally sad that spa services aren’t included in the price!

Oh, Alaska would be a great introduction to cruising. Or at least I think so. I haven’t been to Alaska yet, but it is a great way to visit Alaska for the first time. I keep saying every year that we will finally go on an Alaskan cruise but the cold keeps me from booking it. I tell hubby that I need to book a week in Mexico after getting back from an Alaska cruise LOL.

The best time of year to cruise without children is when they are in school. Like this past cruise, I think I saw a total of 10 children the entire week. I even asked one of the crew members were the young people were and he told me, oh the shipped was filled with families during the summer. Stay away from cruising during the Summertime and Spring Break. While there are a lot of people on cruises, there are always quiet spots around the ship to get away from it. Worst case, book a balcony so you have your balcony to escape to whenever you want.

Spa services should totally be included! They are so expensive.

And yes, this is one of those posts I will revise yearly and republish. Hopefully. Going back through all my old blog posts as we speak. So stressful and so much work. Anyways, thanks for stopping by.

I retired in May 2014 and that November I took a cruise to Hawaii. I loved it so much my wife and I have done 5 more. We have 1 planed in May to Iceland and 1 in December back in Hawaii. Getting the funds together for another in May. I like longer cruises. The only problem I have is where am I going to eat and what show I want to see when. The only Major problems I have had in my short cruise carrier, 1 In Hawaii a typhoon was 1500 miles away in the Sea of Japan and it was rough. Like if you had a port hole room on bottom 3 decks you would have been under water. 2 We took a cruise up New England coast and into Canada. We missed Prince Edward Island because 100 mile winds on hurricane Dorian. It is the only trip we do any more other than weekend trips around Our state of Indiana. I liked your article. Keep up your posts and will be looking for future articles.

I love that you retired and set your eyes on a cruise! What a fantastic way to celebrate the beginning of retirement. I hope when I retire later in life, hubby and I can cruise more often. Now we kind of like try to fit it within our vacation days and that’s if we don’t have our hearts set on a land vacation. I think there will be no cruises for us in 2020. I do hope to cruise to Hawaii as I have my eyes set on a Norwegian Cruise that hits most of the islands. We just did a land vacation in Kauai this past Spring and absolutely loved it. Iceland sounds amazing too. Have you gone to Alaska? That’s also on our list.

There are so many downsides to cruising like hurricanes, typhoons, and storms. The weather, in general, can really put a damper on a cruise. It can also be very scary and true, as people may not want to cruise for these reasons. I don’t believe it should stop anyone from booking a future cruise.

I appreciate you commenting. Your words truly mean a lot and I hope I can continue this blog for as long as possible.

Cruise Ducks: Tips, Rules & Everything You Need to Know

cruising ducks - cruising trend that will quack you up

Sharing is caring!

If you’re going on a cruise and have heard about cruise ducks, you might be wondering what its all about. Cruise ducks have been around for a few years and the fun trend is only becoming more popular!

While hiding cruise ducks is most well known on Carnival cruises , you’re likely to find cruising ducks on Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Disney and other popular cruise lines.

I’ve been cruising for about 20 years, and first heard about cruise ducks about 5 years ago. Since that time we’ve found cruising ducks on several cruise ships. On a recent Princess cruise, we finally decided to join in on the fun and participate in the cruise ducks trend.

In this post I go over everything you need to know about cruising ducks, from it’s origins to how you play the game.

What Are Cruise Ducks?

cruising ducks

Cruise ducks are small plastic or rubber ducks that cruise passengers hide in different areas of the cruise ship. You can buy traditional yellow rubber ducks or show off your personality with fun themed ducks.

Some cute ducks I’ve seen include sports themed ducks like hockey or baseball, holiday ducks for both Christmas and Halloween, Princess ducks, and more.

Some people create their own ducks by knitting or crocheting them, while others have been creating home made keychains. It’s pretty incredible to see how creative people are getting with this cruise trend.

However, this isn’t the whole story. Cruising ducks is actually a fun game, with a few rules to follow if you decide to bring cruising ducks on your cruise vacation.

The Cruising Duck Game

Cruise-ducks

The cruising duck game is similar to a game of hide and seek. People hide ducks on a cruise, and other cruisers look for the ducks. Sometimes this is referred to as Duck Hunting (in the sweetest way).

Once people find a cruise duck, they’ll often post a picture of it in a Cruising Duck Facebook page or use the hashtag #cruisingducks and post to Instagram.

Cruising Duck Game Rules

Are you wondering how to play? The cruise ducks game is simple, but there are actually rules to follow and a few things to know.

1. Buy or create ducks to hide

You can buy small rubber on Amazon and in party stores. These days you can even find cruise duck sets which include novelty ducks, tags and ties.

2. Label your ducks

Label your ducks with the following information:

  • name (can be family name)
  • cruise ship

As an example “Smith family – Carnival Mardi Gras – April 1, 2023)

3. Print out cruise duck tags

It’s fun to put your information on cruise duck tags or “passports”. Some people use stickers and place these right on the bottom of the duck, or may even label with a permanent marker.

4. Keep or Hide, You Decide

The cruising ducks game is really just meant for fun, so an important element is to use the message “Keep or Hide, You Decide” on the cruise duck tag.

It’s ok to search for cruise ducks and keep them, or to rehide some to continue the fun.

5. No hiding cruise ducks in shops, pools or hot tubs

Cruise lines don’t mind cruisers bringing the novelty ducks onboard. However, there is a rule that cruise ducks can’t be hidden in shops, pools and hot tubs.

6. Cruise ducks should never go into the ocean

Remember that you don’t want any ducks to go into the ocean, so never hide them on outer railings or anywhere where a gust of wind can blow them off the ship.

7. Post to social media (optional)

It’s fun for people who hide cruising ducks to see that they’re found, and they may include an instruction to post a photo to a cruising duck facebook page or to use a hashtag #cruisingducks. However, posting a photo of your cruise duck isn’t mandatory.

What is the Story Behind Cruising Ducks?

Cruising-ducks

According to everything I have read, the popular cruising duck trend was started by a young girl named Abby Davis in March 2018. Abby and her father Ashley Davis, went on a 7 day Carnival cruise and brought 50 ducks to hide during their Caribbean cruise.

Their purpose was just to play a fun game and make people smile – and did they ever!

Since that time, they started the Facebook group, Cruising Ducks – Original Group, which now has over 180,000 members. According to Abby’s dad Ashley, they never thought the group would get this big and that this “kindness project” would catch on as it has.

Cruising Ducks Communities

There are several Facebook groups, including the Original Cruising Ducks group, where you can get ideas and be inspired, as well as ask all the cruising duck questions you could think of.

In cruise duck facebook groups, people will post photos of their cruise ducks, tags and passports as they get ready for their upcoming cruise.

Cruisers who’ve found ducks onboard cruises post their photos as well.

What To Do if You Find a Cruising Duck

Cruising Ducks found on cruise ship 6 x 4 (1)

If you find a cruising duck on a cruise ship, it will usually have an instruction to “keep or hide, you decide” and a call to action asking you to post a photo within the Facebook group, if possible.

Some people decide to keep the cruising duck, while others may choose to hide it to pass on some fun to another cruise passenger or crew member.

You could even take the new found duck friend on your next cruise, and post about his voyage and how far he’s traveled.

Something to remember if you do embark on hiding ducks on your next cruise, is that you may never know who found your duck (although you might). Even so, your special duck probably brought a smile to someone and could mean more than you know.

“This group is a community kindness project” , says the admin message on Cruising Ducks Original Group.

Remember that not everyone has internet while cruising or social media (Facebook or Instagram).

You may want to personalize your cruising duck with your own cruise duck tags, passports or stickers.

If you join Cruising Ducks Original Group, you’ll actually be able to download tags and passports for your cruising ducks. Before you can do this, you do have to join the Facebook Group, but it’s free and a nice group of people who really just want to contribute to the fun.

How to Create Your Own Cruising Ducks

crochet cruising ducks

There are ways to create your own ducks. For instance, some people crochet or knit their cruising ducks. I’m amazed at the talent of Natali Sholes Young and her daughter, who crocheted some their cruising ducks to give away!

Some Cruising Ducks have a Story

One thing that I noticed, and that frankly surprised me as I researched this trendy activity, is that many people shared ducks that had an extra special meaning.

Some ducks were tagged in memory of someone special who had a love of life, but has sadly passed on. Other people shared ducks that had a beautiful message for Autism awareness or another worthy cause.

Natali, a first time participant, kindly shared the story of her special ducks (seen above). Half of her ducks will be tagged for breast cancer awareness and the other half for Type 1 diabetes, since she is sailing during the months of awareness for these diseases and they are important to her.

She says “I’m here to spread awareness with a whole lot of fun and smiles!!”. Love it!!

My ducks are absolutely not in a row meme life well cruised

How to Attach the Tags on the Cruising Ducks

You can use colored rubber bands to attach the tags to the necks of the rubber ducks, twine or some curling ribbon.

I recently saw this idea posted in a Cruising Duck Facebook Group. This fun duck themed ribbon is great for tying duck tags or passports on to your cruise duck.

Cruise Ducks Frequently Asked Questions

What size ducks should i order.

Most people seem to like the 2 inch size, although some buy bigger and some buy smaller. Do be careful with buying ducks that are very small as these could be a choking hazard for young children

Can cruising ducks not be ducks?

I can’t believe I wrote that, but you probably know what I mean. Rubber “duckies” come in different animal forms and creations.

It seems that there are various answers to this question, depending on which Cruise Duck Facebook Group you join.

Some say anything goes, after all it’s all in good fun. Others say ducks only. Personally, I don’t see an issue with having other similar novelty toys.

Will the cruise ship’s crew throw the ducks away?

Most cruise lines have made their crew aware of cruise ducks, and most crew members say they enjoy it. Early on, some reported that crew would throw away the ducks, but this doesn’t seem to be an issue now.

Crew may even enjoy the fun of receiving one from a guest . Some crew say they bring a couple home to their children when they finish their contract.

Carnival Cruise Line, where this trend is extremely popular has truly embraced it. John Heald, brand ambassador for Carnival has said that crew have been made aware of the cruising duck phenomenon and won’t be throwing away ducks.

Is there sample wording for my cruising duck tags?

Here are some ideas….

“ConQUACKtulations!”

“Oh what luck, you’ve found a duck. Keep or hide, you decide”

Don’t forget to let people know where your cruising duck came from, the ship and sail date and where they can share it/post it on social media should they want to (your cruise duck Facebook group of choice).

Many more ideas are posted with Cruising Duck Facebook communities, so definitely check the out.

If you prefer to order your tags ready made, here’s a cute one (on Amazon) .

I’ve scrolled through a few and have seen so any great ideas for ducks and tags. If you like the passport printable shown in the above photo, Dee has kindly created a printable which is available in the Cruising Ducks – Original Group Facebook community.

Cruising Duck Facebook Groups

There are a few Facebook Groups dedicated to the fun activity of hiding and finding ducks. They’re a place to connect with other cruisers, get ideas and see the ducks that are being prepared for upcoming cruises, as well as the photos posted of ducks that are found on board.

The nice thing about these groups is to be able to chat about cruising ducks and ask questions to other people who are really into this.

Check out the files section for resources like templates you can print out, and events where others in the group may be cruising with you. It’s similar to a cruise roll call .

Here are some groups to get you started:

I couldn’t help but notice that beyond these adorable rubber ducks, there are tons of other stuff all dedicated in some way to Cruising Ducks. I’ve seen people posting duck socks, duck ties, and duck t-shirts.

Some have pretty cute sayings that I got a kick out of, including shirts that said “Duck, Duck, Cruise “ . If you played this game as a kid, you might find it amusing too. You can find a wide array of t-shirts and other duck related stuff on Amazon .

Thanks also for catching my typo – fixing it now 🙂

I appreciate your very kind words and a super glad you’re enjoying my posts and emails!

Actually placing ducks on cruise-ships in nothing new. It was bsically started back in 2010 on a Royal Caribbean cruise when a group of women from Massapequa High School, N.Y, class of 74, placed over 250 ducks around the Freedom of the Seas as part of a scavenger hunt with clues supplied of the various locations where the ducks were hidden. One duck had a special note on it giving away a free cruise for two to the finder of the duck. That scavenger hunt continued on various cruises by this same group up to 2016 when the group stopped doing their yearly reunion on cruises. My mom was part of that group and kept the three ducks she located as keepsakes and mementos of those trips. Other high school reunion groups had heard about what MHS was doing and they started hiding their own ducks throughout the years.

The power of social media is probably the cause of this recent explosion of the cruising duck phenomenon where now thousands upon thousands of people are now hiding ducks on cruise ships all over the world. With the promotion on Facebook by “Cruising Ducks”, they have taken this to a whole new level.

People are becoming more creative with their ducks. Some even hand making crocheted ducks. It’s now become a fun thing to do with the kids prior to the family cruise and even more fun when the kids find the ducks while on the cruise.

Will be interesting to see how long this game will continue. Carnival has embraced the game while some other cruise-lines go along with it. Personally I hope it continues to grow.

I will be taking my next cruise in February 2021 and I will be bringing my ducks to hide. That’s for sure!!

Wow Rhonda! I had no idea this Cruising Ducks phenomenon had such history! It’s definitely a fun and lighthearted, and as you mentioned, creative activity and I agree with your sentiments.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.

We searched for ducks on a 2016 Royal cruise & hid ducks on a 2017 Carnival cruise . Definitely did not begin in 2018.

We are cruising in May and i will be taking ducks to hide. Fun!

That does sound like fun! Is your cruise still sailing? I’ve seen a few updates now

Found my first duck Dec. 2019. I love the Facebook group, the positivity helped through 2020. We all look forward to cruising again. National Rubber Ducky day was yesterday, it’s held annually in order of Sesame Street Rubber Ducky, whose birthday is Jan. 13.

Thanks for sharing that Shantelle. I wish we were cruising this year so we could celebrate the special day on a cruise. Hopefully next year!

I found one coming out of the theater one evening. New England and Canada cruise September of 2019. I thought some kid lost his toy. I picked it up looked at it and put it back in place. I was clueless about the game.

How funny! I wouldn’t have known either 🙂

Interesting article. I’ll be on the lookout for a duck on my next cruise.

Let me know if you see any – I hear they’re making a comeback 🙂

Just found my first duck! I had no idea about this fabulous Duck Game! Such a great idea! I can’t wait till my next cruise so I can pass on the happiness that I found! 😁❤️🐤

How fun! I think this will be coming back, and as you said, definitely be bringing along and passing on some happiness.

My mom is 75 this will be her first cruise. We are going on the Dream in April. Lost my husband in Oct 2021. This trip is my gift to my mom and myself, I would be celebrating our 40 th.aniversery. We will have a blast watching people look and find one for yourself. My grown daughter has collected them for her whole life. Thanks for a spark in our life. Daisy Robinson

I’m so sorry for your loss. It sounds like this cruise with you and your mom will be both fun and meaningful for you both. I hope you have an amazing time and these cruise ducks bring joy to you and others on your upcoming cruise.

My adult daughter and I have been cruising since 2011 when I started selling cruises at the travel agency where I work. She found her first cruise duck on the Panorama November 2021, which was her 31st birthday cruise, after the 2020 30th birthday cruise was cancelled. She was curious, as we knew nothing about them. Neither of us facebook. On our Bermuda cruise May 2022, she found another one and was thrilled. She went on a cruise in July with a friend (her first cruise) and her friend found one! My daughter told her about them and they were both so excited. We are planning on taking ducks to hide on our next cruise. We are having fun shopping for them, so far we have bought mermaid and unicorn ducks, just deciding about tags or stickers. Will be on Carnival Celebration in April 2023 and will have fun just hiding them this time. Finding another one would be a bonus! Thank you for your info, it was definitely beneficial.

This is great! Thanks for sharing and have an amazing cruise!

I love this post! It’s ‘lightbulb time’!!

The YMCA I belong to has a ‘Trunk or Treat’ the Saturday night before Halloween. Since my cruise starts 2 days later, Monday the day before Halloween, I’m going to order a BUNCH of ducks to give away to the kids and special needs young folks at the Y, and bring the rest onboard the cruise!!!

What the duck? Why people hide these kiddie toys on cruises — and how you can, too

Ashley Kosciolek

On many a cruise, rubber ducks can be found peeking out from random hiding places, beckoning passengers to pick them up and read their accompanying information tags. Perhaps you'll find one hidden behind a plant by the Doe Family from Springfield or another carefully placed somewhere in the buffet by the Smiths from Greenville.

What the duck, you might be wondering, is the deal with hiding ducks on cruise ships?

As an avid duck hider, let me clue you in to this popular onboard pastime. Whether you're ready to hide ducks on cruises or want to send your kids on a hunt for cruise ducks, you'll need to get your own ducks in a row before you set sail.

Cruise ship rubber ducks, explained

cruise meaning pictures

Cruisers often bring rubber ducks on cruises in an effort to have a bit of fun by hiding them throughout the ship. The ducks usually have information cards attached to them bearing the names of the people who hid them and where those passengers are from.

What began in 2018 as a cute gesture by a 10-year-old girl named Abby — who simply wanted to make other passengers smile — now spans several Facebook groups with hundreds of thousands of members. In these groups, cruisers chat about the ducks they've ordered, the best places to purchase them, clever places to hide them after they've set sail and the best ways to attach the information tags.

The largest group I've been able to find — yes, I'm a member — is " Cruising Ducks - Original ," which encourages people to share photos of the ducks they plan to hide as well as ducks they've found on board. Think of it a bit like geocaching, but simpler — and with ducks.

What to do if you find cruise ship ducks

cruise meaning pictures

If you find a duck, the next step is simple. Take a photo of yourself with the duck you've found and post it to the "Cruising Ducks - Original" Facebook group. Mention the name of the person who hid it. You might also choose to reach out to thank them if they have provided contact information on the card attached to the duck.

Then, either keep your new friend to take home with you as a souvenir or re-hide it according to the below rules.

Rules for hiding ducks on a cruise

cruise meaning pictures

It might sound silly, but there are rules for hiding rubber ducks on cruises. The first is that you should never put it in a pool or hot tub. You wouldn't want an excited child or inebriated passenger to fall in and drown or hurt themselves while attempting to fetch it.

Second, don't hide ducks in any of the onboard shops. If someone finds one hidden there and tries to take it with them, it could appear as though they're stealing something.

Third, don't place ducks where they might fall overboard. It's a huge no-no to toss anything into the ocean, even by accident.

When choosing ducks, the sky is the limit. I've seen everything from mini-ducks to giant ones that are a foot tall. You can find simple, classic yellow ducks in bulk online or you can choose to go all-out and purchase custom ones in a color or design that suits your personality. You might also choose to order plain ones and decorate them yourself with feathers, glitter or paint. Really, anything goes in terms of theme.

Some participants even choose to vary it a bit by hiding other duck-themed toys or objects, such as duck keychains, hand-crocheted ducks, duck-shaped Hot Wheels cars or small LEGO duck kits.

On a couple of my recent sailings, I won some inexpensive mini-ducks by playing a claw game in the arcade, and I used spare hair ties to attach my business card to them. It was a last-minute improvisation, but boy was it fun. Hiding them also kept the young daughter of one of my travel companions busy for an afternoon.

cruise meaning pictures

(Inspired by that experience, the cruise team here at The Points Guy got creative and had some specialty captain ducks made for the team to hide on upcoming cruises.)

For the tags, make sure to include your name and where you're from, along with instructions for the people who find your little quackers. Standard wording is generally something like this:

"Oh, what luck. You found a duck! Keep or hide, you decide. You found a cruising duck hidden by [name] from [city, state, country]. Hide in public places only — no pools, hot tubs or stores. Take a photo, and post it in the Facebook group 'Cruising Ducks - Original.'"

At a minimum, the tag should tell the duck's finders that they can either keep or re-hide the duck and the places that are off-limits. It should also encourage them to share the ducks they find online. You can also choose to include additional information, such as a QR code or your e-mail address.

Bottom line

If you're hiding ducks, be sure to adhere to the rules. If you find a duck, whether you keep it or re-hide it, be sure to post a photo per the accompanying instructions.

Hiding rubber ducks on cruise ships is a fun way to connect with other passengers on your next sailing, as well as a fun pastime on sea days. Whether you find a duck and contact the folks who hid it or hide your own flock so others can reach out to you, it can help you to make new friends from all corners of the globe.

Do medallion colors mean anything?

tkline

Cool Cruiser

So, we did a New England & Canada cruise on the Enchanted Princess back in October, and our medallions had a white background with a yucky barf yellow/green colored princess logo in the middle. Now we just got the medallions for our next cruise in a couple weeks to Hawaii on the Royal, and our medallions have the same yellow/green barf color, but it's for the background and the logo is white. Do the colors on the medallions mean anything, or are they just random if you don't pay extra to add your own picture?

Haha

Pretty sure there is an option to pick from a range of images other than the standard Princess logo

The edge of the medallion is usually silver except when cruising during the first season of a new ship (for example, the Enchanted this year when we were on it in March) when the edge is white.  The center color matches your loyalty status (blue, gold/yellow, ruby, platinum or black).

Just got my medallion for Nov 26. Center color is white.  My precious ones have all been black.

Have the Enchanted Princess medallion color's returned to the standards yet, or are they still issuing the white ones?

I'm not sure when they stopped the white, but our Nov 29th Enchanted medallions are the normal loyalty color.

Thanks. Glad to here it returned to the old standard.

By any chance, can you post which cruise terminal you'll use in St Lucia after you arrive there?

We hoping for the downtown terminal on our trip.

Just got ours for the Enchanted ours is Black for Elite

Just off the Discovery on Saturday (after Thanksgiving).  Mine was white with black design, and Bride's was white with Gold color princess (as she is gold).

However, we were NOT shipped our medalians to the house, they were 'delivered to the LA cruise terminal' we were told.  SO it could be that they made ours at the port, and that is why they were white.

However, I just ordered one for an April cruise and it looked like it would be black background with white drawing.   Only time will tell.

So it COULD be that they have a bunch of 'all purpose white ones in the terminal, but most of the medalians i saw were white and I could not tell the difference between blue drawings and black drawings.

I believe the Medallions are white during a ships inaugural year of sailing.

OOOHH!   Then I will make sure that I dont throw it away as it may be  collectable!

Thanks for letting me know!

Thrak

We sail Friday. Our Medallions are the proper loyalty color.

‘most compelling’ images supposedly showing loch ness monster ‘still defy explanation,’ famed expert says.

A complete collection of photos reportedly showing the elusive Loch Ness monster were released this week — and the images are still exciting the man who spent three decades searching for the mysterious beast.

“They are the most compelling surface images of the phenomenon,” Loch Ness expert Steve Feltham told the Daily Mail Tuesday. “They still defy explanation,” he said.

The photos in question were taken by Chie Kelly in 2018 and show a “serpent”-like figure on the surface of the loch in Inverness, Scotland.

Fifteen of her shots were released this summer to high praise from Feltham and on Tuesday, all 71 photos taken by Kelly of “Nessie” were shared by The Cryptid Factor podcast .

The photos in question were taken by Chie Kelly in 2018 and show a "serpent"-like figure on the surface of the loch in Inverness, Scotland.

Kelly feared being mocked for believing in the beast so she kept the photos from public view until this past August when she decided to put them out into the world to coincide with the largest Loch Ness hunt in 50 years.

Kelly, who works as a translator, was snapping pics of her daughter and husband after a lunch at the Dores Inn when she noticed something moving on the water’s surface.

“I was just taking pictures with my Canon camera of Scott and our daughter Alisa, who was then five, when about 200 meters from the shore, moving right to left at a steady speed was this creature,” Kelly told  the Telegraph . “It was spinning and rolling at times. We never saw a head or neck. After a couple of minutes, it just disappeared and we never saw it again.”

Chie Kelly, who works as a translator, was snapping pics of her daughter and husband after a lunch at the Dores Inn when she noticed something moving on the water's surface.

Her photographs show two rounded humps peaking out of the water. At first, she thought it was a pair of otters but the creature never came up for air and “looked like a serpent.”

Feltham agreed.

“I don’t think they are otters – those creatures are much smaller than what is in the images – or divers. It also appears there may be two objects,” he told the Mail. “They certainly warrant further investigation.”

There were 10 alleged sightings of Nessie last year, marking 1,156 recorded to date, according to a Loch Ness monster register .
