Middle Grades
Clinton’s middle grades academic program is renowned for its rigor. Our middle grades use an original curriculum and focus on building literacy across content areas, developing critical thinking, and learning how to learn together. Because we focus on building students’ abilities to think and communicate logically and analytically, our students excel in reading, writing, and math.
Watch a video created by a sixth grade Advisory Group.
Upper Grades
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, a globally recognized honors program, provides challenging academics paired with a social and emotional framework for developing balanced, well-rounded students. Our upper grades program is built as an “International Baccalaureate for ALL” model, with students completing NYS Regents requirements by the end of 10th grade in order to participate in all IB courses in 11th and 12th grades.
For more information, read the content under Middle Grades , Upper Grades , and IB Diploma Programme on this website.
Clinton Culture
Clinton is known for its friendly environment and welcoming culture. Students, staff, and families have a passion for our school and love cheering on our sports teams, attending our performances and events, and taking advantage of our partnerships with the Whitney Museum and Theater for a New Audience.
Supporting students over 7 years means that we will continue to focus on supporting students’ social and emotional development. We want students to feel comfortable during their time at Clinton. We also want students to have strategies to deal with all that will challenge them as they continue their journey through adolescence.
As a product of NYC public schools and a Specialized High School, it has always been my hope to one day be principal of a strong, selective school that provides students with a free high-quality education that allows students to enjoy themselves while they’re in it. I’m passionate about helping all students succeed, and I’ve worked with adolescents for more than 20 years in District 2. I’m particularly energized by the challenges of the IB Diploma Programme in the 11th grade and 12th grades.
Please explore our website and feel free to ask any questions at an open house.

Announcements, lego robotics news:.
Anderson's brand new Lego Robotics team competed at the Lego League Robotics competition on February 25th, 2024, qualifying for the National Championships.
This is a remarkable achievement as the two Anderson teams were the youngest of over 30 teams. Many of the teams had between 8 and 13 members, yet both Anderson teams consisted of only 4 determined students. They were also ranked first in the team innovation project.

Every year, we ask all families, teachers, and staff and students to take the NYC School Survey . The survey gives school leaders a better understanding of what members of their school community think about their school. The information collected by the survey is designed to support a dialogue among all members of the school community about how to make the school a better place to learn. The 2024 NYC School Survey launched February 12 and will close on April 5, 2024.
TAKE THE SURVEY NOW

NYC 5th graders receive middle school offers, as city considers changes to admissions process

Amanda Rinzel, a parent and educator who lives in Brooklyn, spent her spare moments on Wednesday nervously refreshing her MySchools account, waiting for the news of where her fifth grade son would attend middle school in the fall.
It was the family’s second time going through the middle school admissions process, but in some ways, this year felt different from her first experience. Her older son, a seventh grader at the Professional Performing Arts School , had always been interested in musical theater — making the Hell’s Kitchen school, which accepts students from across the five boroughs via audition, “an obvious choice.”
Stanley, her younger son, is “more well-rounded” in his interests, said Rinzel, who lives in District 17. They ended up ranking the Brooklyn Green School, a boroughwide program in nearby District 16, as their top choice. It drew them in with an administration that seemed especially receptive to student needs, as well as its strong arts and athletics programs, she said.
On Wednesday, Rinzel was elated to learn Stanley had been admitted to his top choice school.
“Middle school can be so hard,” said Rinzel, who teaches at a middle school in the Bronx. “It just seems like a happy place, and I’m so excited for him to be in a school that is uplifting.”
For many families, the Wednesday placements marked the end of the city’s middle school admissions process. In December, fifth grade families across the city ranked as many as 12 middle schools as they submitted their applications.
Over the next week, the city’s Education Department will host three virtual sessions for families to learn more about offers and waitlists.
Unlike the city’s notorious high school admissions process , many middle schools across the city feature district programs that are open only to students who live in the area — with some zoned schools only allowing applicants from within a smaller subset of the district. Other programs offer boroughwide admissions, allowing all students who live in the borough to apply, while other schools allow any student in the city to apply.
Some middle schools also use academic screens to determine admissions, sorting students as young as nine based on their grades. Those screens were initially paused during the pandemic, then brought back in some districts at the discretion of each of the city’s 32 local school district superintendents.

Further change to the admissions process may be on the horizon.
For months, the city’s Education Department has been floating a potential change to the process at parent leader meetings — soliciting feedback on a possible shift that would allow students to apply widely outside of their district. Students applying to schools in their own district would still have priority for seats, according to discussions at various meetings.
Still, it may be some time before any changes are enacted.
In a statement, the city’s Education Department confirmed its Office of Student Enrollment was considering possible changes.
“One of the potential changes we are exploring with parents, advocates and educators is allowing students to apply to middle schools outside of their districts,” a spokesperson said. “Conversations are ongoing and no decisions have been made.”
For Rinzel, a citywide process would have meant more options for her and Stanley to consider. She added they may have looked at more schools beyond their district and borough.
More options for students could also mean a more equitable system, opening up seats at schools that may have more resources than those close to home, Rinzel said. But still, she noted that traveling outside of the borough to attend school each day could add potential safety concerns for young students.
“There are a lot of factors that parents and kids have to take into account if they’re applying citywide,” she said.

The staffers play a critical role on the front lines of two colliding crises: the exploding number of students living in homeless shelters, and elevated rates of chronic absenteeism in the wake of the pandemic.
For many, the Wednesday placements marked the end of the city’s middle school admissions process.
After a colleague at her school left her job, Missy Testerman worried about who would advocate for immigrant families. So she switched gears in her educational career to fill the gap.
Despite bipartisan interest in the issue, advocates have concerns about privacy and overregulation of young peoples' online presence.
Parents of Lowell Elementary School students are taking an English literacy class at the school to boost their chances of getting a job, going to college, and being able to help their kids with homework.
State officials expect families of more than 300,000 children to benefit from the Summer EBT program.

Arizona parents of rich-kid gang member charged with murder allegedly tried to cover his tracks: report.
Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.
The millionaire parents of one teen gang member accused of murdering his 16-year-old peer on Halloween weekend last year in Queen Creek, Arizona, allegedly helped cover the suspects’ tracks following Preston Lord’s beating death, according to a report.
Police call the teenage gang the “Gilbert Goons” in thousands of pages of recently released documents obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix.
Treston Billey, 18, Jacob Meisner, 17, Taylor Sherman, 19, Talan Renner, 17, Dominic Turner, 20, William Owen Hines, 18, and Talyn Vigil, 17, have all been charged in Lord’s murder.
One witness told police Nov. 4 that Renner apparently admitted to a friend he was the first one to punch Lord at a party in the Phoenix suburb, allegedly over a $10 gold necklace stolen from one of Lord’s friends, according to FOX 10.
Renner’s parents, Becky and Travis Renner, owned multiple Orangetheory Fitness studios in different states.
Becky allegedly took the 16-year-old to a lawyer following Lord’s attack and “was told by the attorney that he would ‘get off’ [not in trouble] because of the amount of kids that were said to be involved.”
Renner’s family allegedly transported him to their cabin in Show Low, about three hours from their home in Maricopa County, as his father’s ex-girlfriend told police, according to local news outlet AZ Family.
Renner’s attorney allegedly advised his family to allow his hands time to heal before bringing him home, the outlet reported, citing police documents.
Additionally, less than two weeks after Lord’s murder, Renner was allowed to play in a football game at his high school, American Leadership Academy (ALA) Gilbert North, on Nov. 10 despite widely circulated rumors that he was being investigated in the teenage victim’s death.
He was named player of the game a day later, according to 12News.
The ex-girlfriend also apparently told police Renner “holds in a lot of aggression,” and “when he snaps, he snaps,” AZ Family reported.
“As new evidence came to light, measures were taken to remove the student from our school, and we terminated the football coach,” an ALA spokesperson told the outlet.
On Oct. 31, after police publicized a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest in Lord’s death, one of the suspects texted, “My mom wants in on the [$10,000],” FOX 10 reported.
Renner’s defense attorney did not immediately respond to an inquiry from Fox News Digital.
All defendants are charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping.
Billey, Meisner and Turner are also charged with aggravated robbery.
They have also all pleaded not guilty and are being held on $1 million bond each.
None of the suspects’ parents have been charged in Lord’s death, according to AZ Family.
Lord’s parents, Nick Lord and Autumn Curiel, said the arrests “represent a step towards accountability and justice for our son Preston,” according to a statement issued by their lawyer after police initially announced the suspects’ arrests.
Police initially responded to reports of an assault in the area of 194th Street and Via Del Rancho in Queen Creek at 9:49 p.m. Oct. 28, 2023.
Authorities later located Lord “in the roadway” and transported him to a nearby hospital to be treated for “life-threatening injures.”
He was pronounced dead Oct. 30.
Lord’s family attorney declined comment due to the early and ongoing stage of the prosecution process.
Fox News’ Louis Casiano contributed to this report.

School Counselors, Psychologists Tour CTE Programs At Hewes
Renee Crowden, a counselor at Dunkirk Central School, pipes icing in the Culinary Arts classroom at the Hewes Educational Center. The Chautauqua County Counselors Association met at Hewes to discuss CTE programs and promote student success.
All eyes were on Crowden, a counselor at Dunkirk Central School, as she picked up the plastic bag filled with green-colored icing and carefully drew a line.
Her effort was met with approval from her peers and students in the Career and Technical Education program through Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES.
Crowden was among dozens of school counselors and psychologists who toured CTE classrooms at Hewes. The event, which included E2CCB staff, coincided with a meeting of the Chautauqua County Counselors Association.
Tricia Dallas, president of the Counselors Association, said the meetings allow for counselors to collaborate with one another while also learning more about the CTE programs.
Justin Saunders of the Jamestown Public Schools District discusses the Culinary Arts program offered through Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES.
“We’re able to see programs like this and occasionally bring in guest presenters and learn what resources we have to support our kids and their success outside of what we have in our districts,” said Dallas who, in addition to serving as the association’s president, is a middle school counselor in Frewsburg.
The theme to this year’s meeting was, “Unlocking the Pot of Gold: Strategies for Student Success.”
“We’re really doing whatever we can to connect the kids to the resources, promote their success and how to provide more for the kids, especially for those who might not have as much support outside of school,” Dallas said.
Committee on Special Education members from component school districts were also invited to the gathering.
Attendees were broken up into small groups and given a tour of the different CTE programs. Students led the tours, which included looks inside the classrooms and a quick demonstration.
School counselors and psychologists broke up into teams to tour CTE classrooms and later discuss what they observed.
Alycia Lacki, Guidance Counselor for the CTE program at the LoGuidice Educational Center, helped lead the event. She noted the importance of collaboration between E2CCB and local school districts for guiding students to the right CTE program that best fit their needs.
“That’s kind of the premise of the whole meeting today, to talk about improving the communication between BOCES and all of our component school districts so that we can ensure that students are placed appropriately within our programs,” Lacki said.
Justin Saunders and Jonathan Overbeck, seniors at Jamestown Public Schools and participants in the Culinary Arts program at Hewes, answered questions from school representatives and later led a tour of the Culinary Arts classroom. Both praised their instructor and the “well-rounded” education that they have received over the last two years.
“We have learned so much, like how to properly serve people and about the foods from all different places,” Saunders said.
Alissa Rinaldo, school social worker for the CTE program at Hewes, said the decision was made this year to include Committee on Special Education staff from local schools.
“It’s a collaborative process with the goal of student success in mind,” Rinaldo said. “We can ask, ‘How can we make sure that we’re all on the same page driving that student toward success?'”
Following lunch and a tour of the classrooms, attendees discussed the CTE programs and what they observed.
In addition to E2CCB staff, representatives from Clymer, Chautauqua Lake, Dunkirk, Cassadaga Valley, Brocton, Bemus Point, Westfield, Southwestern, Sherman, Ripley, Pine Valley, Jamestown, Gowanda, Frewsburg, Forestville and Falconer were in attendance.
“I think it’s important to know that even though we’re a Counselors Association, we are definitely more of a school district and community organization trying to really connect school, home and community all together,” Dallas said. “We’re really trying to promote that relationship and connection to make things better for the kids and help them become successful.”

OSHKOSH ― Community members will get one last chance to say their goodbyes to Washington Elementary and Merrill Elementary and Middle Schools when the Oshkosh Area School District offers farewell tours of both facilities.
The self-guided tours are free and open to the public. They will be offered through a pair of two-hour afternoon and evening time slots on April 28 and May 1 as the buildings prepare to be closed at the end of this school year.
“Merrill and Washington schools have served our community well for decades, shaping thousands of young minds, OASD Superintendent Bryan Davis via a press statement.
“As we look ahead to an exciting new chapter, we invite all community members to join us for a farewell tour celebrating the rich legacies of these two schools.
“We hope our students, families, alumni and community members take this chance to celebrate the schools' histories before we embrace our exciting future,” he added.

Merrill, Washington and Webster Stanley Elementary Schools are expected to be consolidated into the new Menominee Elementary on the site of the former Webster Stanley building as part of Phase 1 of the district’s consolidation plan.
The Merrill building will be demolished to create space for the new Vel Phillips Middle School while OASD intends to sell Washington Elementary School to the City of Oshkosh for residential development.
“While saying farewell to the past is bittersweet, this transition presents an extraordinary opportunity to build upon our traditions in an innovative new learning environment at Menominee Elementary that will inspire students for years to come,” wrote Davis.

Day of Discovery Engages Middle School Students in STEM Learning
Posted April 2, 2024 — As part of the Middle School Postsecondary Readiness Project , a program supported by a generous grant from the Rockwell Fund, the Advancing Community Engagement and Service (ACES) Institute provided approximately 100 students with an interactive science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning experience at the University of Houston.
Day of Discovery was a multi-departmental effort to increase interest in STEM while simultaneously introducing students to life on the UH campus.
The ACES Institute and the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM) partnered to deliver multiple hands-on learning experiences for middle school students. With the guidance of Cougar Tutors, students moved from building to building to experience different activities. Students explored biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental science and even artificial intelligence.
“This event reminded students that science is fun! It taught me the importance of being a good role model for students,” said Emma Kuo, a Cougar Tutor.
At the end of their day, students received a tour from Public Art of the University of Houston System (Public Art UHS) and had lunch at Cougar Woods.
The ACES Institute and NSM hope to inspire these students to attend college and follow a STEM related field. Now, more than ever, it is important to provide students with rich real-world learning experiences. The ACES Institute continues to address high school dropout prevention by targeting middle school students struggling academically. — By Raul Rosa

In his campaign for re-election, President Biden has said that raising taxes on the wealthy and on big corporations is at the heart of his agenda. But under his watch, overall net taxes have decreased.
Jim Tankersley, who covers economic policy for The Times, explains.

Background reading
An analysis prepared for The New York Times estimates that the tax changes President Biden has ushered into law will amount to a net cut of about $600 billion over four years.
“Does anybody here think the tax code’s fair?” For Mr. Biden, tax policy has been at the center of his efforts to make the economy more equitable.
