Five of the best planet-friendly experiences on the Sunshine Coast

| THIS ARTICLE WAS CREATED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH Visit Sunshine Coast |

This article was created in partnership with visit sunshine coast, from active outdoor adventures for nature lovers to eco-epicurean escapades and earth-conscious accommodation, the sunshine coast is brimming with planet-friendly experiences..

Kondalilla National Park, Montville, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia

Who wouldn’t want to preserve and rejuvenate this precious environment? (Image: Tourism & Events Queensland)

And it’s not just Aussies who are noticing. The Sunshine Coast has recently become the only place in the world where three UNESCO-declared biospheres sit side by side, as the Sunshine Coast Biosphere Reserve, the Noosa Biosphere Reserve and the Great Sandy Biosphere Reserve form a green corridor from the Glass House Mountains along more than 100 kilometres of coastline to Tin Can Bay.

Also worth noting? The Noosa Everglades are one of only two everglade systems in the world. With its rich abundance of precious environments, it’s no wonder more travellers are seeking ways to tread lightly when traversing this biodiverse destination. Here are five ways to experience the Sunshine Coast in sustainable style.

1. Kayak for the koalas

Kayak Tours, Everglades, Noosa, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia

Paddle the Noosa Everglades (one of only two everglade ecosystems in the world) and help fund koala conservation. (Image: Tourism Events Queensland)

Paddle through the striking, world-renowned Noosa Everglades while raising money for koala habitats (who said you can’t multitask while on holiday?). Kanu Kapers not only gives kayakers a front-row seat to the incredible beauty of the everglades, but also provides the satisfaction of knowing you’re touring with a company that’s giving back to the land it tours on. Through its carbon offset scheme, Kanu Kapers’ owners, Viv and Kym – in collaboration with local charity Queensland Koala Crusaders – raise much-needed funds to maintain and create leafy homes for koalas. Better yet, these tour operators don’t use motorised boats, instead opting to guide visitors with handcrafted sea kayaks to ensure they’re not polluting these ancient waterways. This peaceful experience is a must-try for avid wildlife watchers and active travellers.

2. Retreat into the rainforest

Glass House Mountains, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia

Narrows Escape host multi-day walking retreats using the sustainable villas as a base.

It’s easier resting your head in accommodation that’s centred on planet-friendly practices, sleeping safe in the knowledge that sustainability is a priority. Narrows Escape in Montville is a luxurious hinterland retreat that focuses on ensuring its water and energy consumption is minimal, its waste is managed responsibly, and sustainability is the end goal. Nature-loving guests can take part in the retreat’s six-day, five-night guided Sunshine Coast’s Great Walk package, which allows hikers to become much better acquainted with the local environment. Just want to unwind? Combine style and eco-friendly principles and opt for a stay in one of six private villas, complete with your own crackling log fire and bubbling spa, perched on the edge of Kondalilla National Park.

3. Set sail sustainably

Saltwater Eco Tour, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia

Sail the Sunshine Coast with local knowledge, bush tucker and seafood. (Image: Tourism & Events Queensland)

Mooloolaba-based Saltwater Eco Tours welcomes its guests aboard a 113-year-old, carefully restored heritage timber ship, Spray of the Coral Coast, to sail over the serene, turquoise waters of the Sunshine Coast. Having collaborated with the traditional owners of the land, this tour provider ensures visitors take in the ancient wisdom of the local Kabi Kabi First Nations peoples as the ship sets sail through a distinctly photogenic setting. Saltwater Eco Tours provides a choice of a dedicated cultural tour, a sunset tour with live music, a native bushfoods and seafood cruise, or a private charter. Each tour encourages its participants to connect with Indigenous culture, the Mooloolah River and the area’s maritime history.

4. Imbibe feel-good brews

Terella Brewing, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia

There are loads of options like their ginger beer or hard lemonade at the sustainable Terella Brewing. (Image: Visit Sunshine Coast)

With a strong connection to the land, a name that means ‘little earth’, and a devotion to producing great, German-inspired beer, Terella Brewing in North Arm creates its popular beverages in a sustainably minded cycle system (which means its waste products are put to good use). And because the innovative, eco-conscious brewery shares a home with a vertical farm, both companies are making use of each other’s growing and brewing by-products to further lower their footprint and waste. Travellers – and their dogs – can visit the brewery’s tranquil, family-friendly hinterland tap room, meet farmyard animals, and enjoy snacks and beers on the sprawling lawns. If beer isn’t your drink of choice you still have lots of options, as the brewery also produces the popular Mad Dog range: try their ginger beer, hard lemonade, or hibiscus and lychee hard lemonade.

5. Wake among the mountains

Glasshouse Mountains Eco Lodge, Sunshine Coast, QLD

Restored 1880’s train carriages with solar power, composting and the planting of trees have turned Glasshouse Mountains Ecolodge into a responsible destination on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

There are few places more scenic to wake up than in the Glass House Mountains, and fortunately, a sustainably inclined accommodation option awaits those who wish to help protect this stunning stretch of the coast while they’re in the area. At Glass House Mountains Ecolodge you can rest assured knowing the lodge is taking measures to preserve the local environment as you cosy up in a restored 1880s train carriage or 125-year-old timber church. Since buying the property more than 30 years ago, owner Keith and his family have planted hundreds of trees on site, while solar power, composting, self-sufficient water usage, a grey water recycling system and low-energy lighting all contribute to the lodge’s gentler approach.

Saltwater Eco Tours launches new Indigenous eco cruise

In the Year of Indigenous Tourism, Queensland’s Sunshine Coast’s rich Indigenous heritage and spectacular coastline are being celebrated with the launch of a new Indigenous cruise operator, Saltwater Eco Tours.

Operating from Mooloolaba, Saltwater Eco Tours is using a century-old historic timber sailing vessel, Spray of the Coral Coast, to showcase the Sunshine Coast’s Indigenous heritage and marine beauty.

Each tour will have an Indigenous story-teller on board to share the stories, traditions and culture of the Sunshine Coast’s original Indigenous inhabitants and first eco custodians, the Kabi Kabi people (who were originally known as the ‘Saltwater People’).

Saltwater Eco Tours is the brainchild of Simon Thornalley, a young Indigenous man of Torres Strait Island descent. Simon spent his life sailing through the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Straits as a child, honing his skills before gaining his Commercial Master Class 5 licence, which took him across many oceans, including six cruises to Antarctica as First Officer on a charter vessel.

Simon has incorporated his love for the marine environment, his cultural heritage, and his passion for sailing by launching a series of tours aboard Spray of the Coral Coast. These include:

Cultural Tour – the signature cruise takes passengers to sites of cultural significance and places where Dreamtime stories and songs originated. Large numbers of sea birds, turtles, and dolphins can be spotted along the way. During the two hour cruise there will be storytelling, didgeridoo and entertainment provided by Indigenous guides, along with delicious bush-tucker inspired catering, accompanied by a refreshing local craft beer or sparkling wine. Operating three times daily each weekend, adult tickets cost $120, children (5-16) $79. Sunset Acoustic Tour – the two-hour cruise operates on Saturday and Sunday evenings, combines a dramatic sunset, soft acoustic music, a selection of grazing platters and a local craft beer as the vessel cruises the waterways, taking in nocturnal wildlife, fishing vessels and the setting sun. Adult prices are $55 per person. Private Charters – available for exclusive hire for cruises of 2 to 4 hours, Salwater Eco Tours can accommodate a wide range of requirements including custom catering, live music and story-telling. The historic Spray of the Coral Coast is a beautifully-restored, classic 58ft gaff-rigged Huon-pine ketch with a fascinating history of its own. The vessel has the same design as the Spray, which Joshua Slocum skippered in the late 19thcentury to become the first person to circumnavigate the world singlehanded.

The vessel can cater for 35 passengers, but is restricting numbers to 20 currently, to adhere to its Covid-safety plan.

Launching the new tour operation, Simon Thornalley, who was recently appointed as a Young Indigenous Tourism Leader, said: “I am honoured and proud to launch a business that encompasses my passion for culture, as well as maritime history and sailing. Sustainable tourism plays a crucial role in today’s society and in the year of Indigenous tourism I am excited to launch Saltwater Eco Tours on the Sunshine Coast.”

Queensland Tourism Minister, Kate Jones, welcomed the launch of the Sunshine Coast’s newest tourism experience. “There’s more demand than ever for authentic ecotourism and Indigenous cultural experiences in Queensland,” she said.

“COVID-19 has had a huge impact on our tourism industry. We need new experiences like Saltwater Eco Tours to entice visitors back to the Sunny Coast and share the message that we’re Good To Go in Queensland.”

Martin County Florida

Join Captain Nancy Beaver on an eco-boat tour of the Indian River and the St. Lucie River and discover why these estuaries are so special. See Bottlenose Dolphin, Manatee, Sea Turtles or perhaps an Otter or a Sting Ray.

Experience the most diverse estuary in North America aboard “Sirenia”, a 35′ pontoon boat with a full roof and restroom. Join Captain Nancy Beaver, and her 20 years of experience with nature and the wildlife of the Indian River Lagoon. Enjoy close up views of Bottlenose Dolphins, Manatees, Sea Turtles and a vast array of endangered and threatened bird species and their rookeries.

We troll with a plankton and zoo plankton net to view the microscopic life of the nursery in the ocean using our discovery scopes. See the mangrove and sea grass beds that are responsible for sustaining life in the estuary and understand the importance of maintaining the fragile balance of this ecosystem.

We visit bird island on every tour. One of the top 10 bird rookeries in Florida, recently designated a critical wildlife area in the state. This is the first critical wildlife area to be designated by the state in over 20 years. Along the way, enjoy some history of the Manatee pocket, the St. Lucie River, the Indian River Lagoon, and the intracoastal waterway.

Visit an island which is home to 14 species of birds. All tours depart from a dock at the end of Bayview St, located next to Pirate’s Cove at 4307 SE Bayview St, Stuart, FL 34997. Parking is available near the dock. Plan to arrive a minimum of 15 minutes prior to departure time.

Explore miles and miles of peaceful beaches - beautiful water and natural terrain await you!

Don't forget to visit one of the many historical landmarks that makes Martin County truly a one of a kind destination!

Martin County is home to the most bio-diverse lagoon eco-system in the Northern Hemisphere.

Travel Guides

Eco-tour destinations in the sunshine state, when you plan a vacation around one of florida's eco tours and destinations, you get an unforgettable glimpse of the preserved beauty of florida -- from the swamps of the everglades to the protected sand dunes in the northwest's beaches.  .

Florida – it’s one of the most ecologically and culturally diverse places on the planet. While the Sunshine State is known around the globe for vacations centered around theme parks and shopping experiences , it’s time to see the real Florida and learn about our unique history and natural lands through one of these self-guided eco tours in Florida.

Visit these Florida towns and the destinations that are within easy driving distance of them. Travel lightly and consciously, and discover the truly sublime beauty of natural Florida.

Situated between Pensacola and Destin, Navarre is an excellent location to explore Northwest Florida’s powder-white sand coastline. The Gulf Islands National Seashore boasts eight miles of undeveloped beaches, where four species of sea turtles come ashore to nest. >  To the east, take time to visit Walton County’s coastal dune lakes – you won’t find a larger concentration of these freshwater marvels anywhere else in the world. To the north, paddle the Blackwater River near Milton, the “Canoe Capitol of Florida,” or hike the Florida National Scenic Trail in the Blackwater River State Forest.

Crystal River

Flagler beach, punta gorda, everglades city, st. vincent island.

You’ll find St. Vincent Island snuggled in the Gulf of Mexico on Florida’s Forgotten Coast in Northwest Florida. This National Wildlife Refuge is a 12,300-acre undeveloped barrier island, a beautiful, pristine place that offers numerous trails, nine miles of beaches, and fabulous birding and wildlife viewing. The refuge is home to San Bar deer, an exotic elk, as well as nesting shorebirds that include snowy plovers. The island is also a successful "Island Propagation Site" for the Red Wolf Recovery program. You can reach the island aboard the St. Vincent Island Shuttle that departs year around from Indian Pass.  www.stvincentfriends.com
