Lady Gaga Kicks Off Her Chromatica Ball Summer Stadium Tour! See Her Dramatic Performance Looks

The world tour, delayed for two years by the pandemic, is Lady Gaga's first since 2018

lady gaga chromatica tour opener

Lady Gaga returned to the stage on Sunday for the first show in her long-awaited Chromatica Ball Summer Stadium tour .

After a two-year delay, the tour — which was originally postponed in June 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic — kicked off with a sold-out show in front of 54,000 people at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The concert was the the first ever public live performance of Gaga's No. 1 selling, sixth studio album, Chromatica . Fan favorite tracks from the LP were among the 20-song set list, including "Rain on Me," "Stupid Love," "Replay," "Free Woman," "911" and "Alice."

Other songs included hits from the songstress' massive discography such as "Bad Romance," "Poker Face," "Shallow," and more (though songs from Gaga's 2013 album Artpop and her 2016 album Joanne appeared to be skipped). The show capped with "Hold My Hand," a single which dropped in May and was written for Top Gun: Maverick .

Of course, this being Gaga, the Chomatica Ball tour was littered with over-the-top theatrical moments and avant-garde outfits, including a striking headdress she paired with a black latex bodysuit.

Her piano was set inside a gorgeous sculpture of thorns.

She was also photographed in a red ensemble that include a jacket with dramatic puff sleeves and a painted bodysuit with duck-tape x's over her nipples. Another look dressed Gaga in a head-to-toe grey look with high-waisted, belted pants.

In a video Gaga posted to Instagram earlier Sunday, the entertainer gave fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the show, nothing that she had not been on tour since 2018.

"The stage was inspired by brutalist architecture, materials, textures, crudity, transparency. A real savage and hard look at yourself, what you've been through," she said. "I wanted to tell a story with abstraction and art, so the show celebrates things that I have always loved like art and fashion and dance and music and technology, poetry, and the way all of those things work together."

She continued, "Everybody has worked so hard on this show and we love you so much. We're so grateful … I want to thank you for sticking it out with me and loving me through the different iterations of my artistry as well as me as a person."

Chromatica was released in May 2020. The Chromatica Ball Tour, produced by Live Nation, will continued across Europe, Asia, and North America for 19 more shows with stadium stops in Sweden, France, the Netherlands, England, Canada, the U.S. and Japan.

Fans can access VIP Packages , may of which include premium tickets, VIP parking, special entry and exclusive access to a pre-show lounge.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human-interest stories.

Since the release of Chromatica , Gaga released Dawn of Chromatica , a remix album of the original featuring musicians like Charli XCX and Rina Sawayama on Sept. 3. She also released Love for Sale with icon Tony Bennett, a Cole Porter tribute album on Sept. 30.

She also returned to the big screen, with an acclaimed performance in House of Gucci .

This May, Gaga wrote on Instagram that her recent single "Hold My Hand" was a "love letter" to them.

"When I wrote this song for Top Gun: Maverick , I didn't even realize the multiple layers it spanned across the film's heart, my own psyche, and the nature of the world we've been living in. I've been working on it for years, perfecting it, trying to make it ours," she wrote. "I wanted to make music into a song where we share our deep need to both be understood and try to understand each other — a longing to be close when we feel so far away and an ability to celebrate life's heroes."

Cloudbuster

It's hilarious how she thinks she's some massive touring juggernaut in the same vein as Coldplay, U2 and Metallica. Some of those dates (announced two years ago) haven't even sold out yet and it starts in a week. I'm guessing we'll see thousands of cheap tickets suddenly start appearing in a few days time to make it look like it's a "sellout", and even if they can't flog those to some poor unfortunate souls they'll try to cover up the large empty spots with tarpaulin or block them off entirely in a desperate bid to hide the truth from the GP. Not sure why she's even touring with that awful flop album in the first place, but I guess we'll get some laughs out of this tour if nothing else. Fact is, no one but her ever decreasing fanbase cares about Lady Gaga in 2022 and haven't for a very long time.

Lol why so bitter babe? Did she kill off all your family or something? Relax, take a deep breath. Lady Gaga is doing just fine.

avatar

That person just wrote what they thought about Gaga. She isn't popular like in 2009, so no need to compare her to big acts.

avatar

Mad that you think she compares herself to Coldplay and Metallica…..fact is she sets a standard when it comes to her tour production and has done so since her first big tour ( Fame Monster) ball. Subsequently her fans have come to expect not just a concert but a “show” …..and Lady Gaga is not one artist who is going to short change those fans. btw …..does anyone apart from Metallica and U2’s loyal fanbase care about them in 2022 ? ……no, i thought not

Well your standards are very low if you think using inflatables as stage props, wearing terrible costumes and stomping around and squealing like a demented hog is "setting a standard". It doesn't give the impression you're getting value for money, quite the opposite. The fact that she's only touring stadiums this time around gives the impression she thinks she's bigger than she actually is, and yes, she does think about Metallica's numbers considering she used an image from one of their dates to fool people into believing the huge audience was from one of her ARTRAVE dates, LOL and completely hilarious watching her scrambling for excuses when she was called out for lying, but Lady Gaga once said that lies are more interesting than the truth, so is anyone surprised by her constant stream of verbal Diarrhea?

The radical fans refuse to see the truth, bad show, terrible last album, just pandering to easily manipulated fans, let them enjoy that mediocrity

Oh shut up. Go take your meds and go to sleep. Lady Gaga is one of the biggest pop artists and best entertainers today and her ticket prices are expensive for that very reason, lol!

You sound like an obsessed weirdo by the way you talk about her in a deranged manner and seem to keep tabs on her every move. The mental facilities are open 24/7, feel free to check in any time.

and you're acting like a sunburnt snowflake the way you're carrying on. It's funny how Little Monsters always react in a similar way whenever she gets the slightest bit of criticism from non fans. Mental facilities are also open 24/7 for you too, which you'll probably need this week when the news of her choreographer starts spreading like wildfire. The onslaught of negativity of her continuing to work with sexual predators and hypocrisy to preach about "mental illness" will be deafening. The one star tour reviews will be the cherry on the cake. lol

Sounds like you're the one that needs to take their meds, Lady Gaga hasn't been successful as a solo artist since 2009. Her career was a car-crash circa Born This Way and it took Bradley Cooper to pull her from the wreckage for ASIB. Everyone thought she would build on that sound and then she released...Chromatica. lol First (solo) single turned out to be a monumental flop and the album dropped down the charts quicker than a lead balloon. She can't get a #1 single these days without collaborations. Oh and the cheap tickets sold first and the expensive ones still remain - some of those tickets have been on sale for months. Hardly impressive for (what you call) one of the best entertainers today. lol Pretty sure Adele and Taylor Swift aren't quaking in their boots over this 20 date tour that no one's interested in.

What criticism? Don't shroud deranged behavior and twisting of reality under "criticism". But hey keep yelling to the clouds, hoping someone will hear your prayer! Rofl! You WISH Lady Gaga got canceled but she'll stick around and haunt your worst nightmares forever!

You just made all of that up ! I can see why her success is keeping you up and bothered like this.

Cloudbuster you are a hater. Real fans of Lady Gaga will always go to her concerts. And support her. She is as talented as Coldplay, U2 and Metallica. I am fan of these bands as well. She is a very talented singer, songwriter, piano player and actress.

why are you so agressive? Do you not agree that GAga isn't that popualr anymore? Then how come her albums aren't charting that long like The Fame? It's not a bad thing, it's how it goes in pop world. Pop stars turn 30 , they aren't fresh and hot and only their fans want them. Just accept it

Lady Gaga finally revives Chromatica Ball tour with new 2022 concert dates

More than two years after announcing the Chromatica tour, Gaga will finally hit the road in support of the Grammy-winning album with a slew of new dates.

lady gaga chromatica tour opener

Rocket No. 9 is taking off to the planet Chromatica once again, as Lady Gaga finally rescheduled her highly anticipated Chromatica Ball tour dates more than two years after their initial announcement.

According to a tweet shared Monday by Gaga, the tour will now expand to 15 dates around the world, beginning July 17 and stretching through September 10.

Gaga initially announced the Chromatica Ball tour to coincide with the album's original rollout in 2020, though the coronavirus pandemic forced the global tour's postponement twice: once to the summer of 2021, and again to 2022.

Released in May of 2020, Chromatica debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and produced two top-five hits: Lead single "Stupid Love" and the No. 1-bowing Ariana Grande collaboration "Rain On Me." To date, the House of Gucci actress has only promoted Chromatica with one televised concert performance at the 2020 MTV VMAs, where she took the stage with Grande to perform a medley of tunes from the album.

In addition to the Chromatica Ball , album producer BloodPop previously told EW the team behind the studio set has also worked on continuing the Chromatica era in different ways — including a potential rollout of unreleased songs recorded during the LP's early sessions.

"We worked with SOPHIE very early on. [She was] the first collaborator of those sessions," he told EW shortly after the album's release, referencing late Scottish producer SOPHIE's contributions to the gestation cycle. "Those days were fun. We set up six microphones and recorded [Gaga's] Lamborghini exhaust, and SOPHIE cut it up into samples. [Though they didn't make the album], we still plan to finish those songs and present something special within the Chromatica universe."

See the full list of rescheduled Chromatica Ball tour dates on Gaga's website .

Lady Gaga Debuts Seven Songs on First Night of the Chromatica Ball

By Hollie Geraghty

Hollie Geraghty

Lady Gaga kicked off her much-anticipated ‘Chromatica Ball’ tour in Düsseldorf, Germany, last night (July 17), giving a string of songs their live debut.

The singer  premiered her new show at the Merkur Spiel-Arena to over 54,000 fans, performing a 20-song setlist that included first-time live performances of “Alice,” “Replay,” “Sour Candy,” “Babylon,” “Free Woman,” and “Enigma.”

She also performed a rendition of her  Top Gun   Maverick single “Hold My Hand” for the first time in the encore, also playing her 2009 hit “Monster” for the first time in eight years.

LETS TALK 🥹 I LOVE YOU ALL SO MUCH AND MISSED YOU THANK YOU FOR A SHOW I WILL NEVER FORGET IM A MONSTER FOR LIFE AND EVEN MONSTERS CAN HEAL https://t.co/ftMbMmDv6G — Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) July 17, 2022

The tour comes in support of Gaga’s 2020 album Chromatica , which was scheduled to kick off in July 2020 but faced a string of delays due to Covid-19.

According to  Setlist.fm , the singer also performed hits “Bad Romance,” “Just Dance,” and “Poker Face” in the prelude, while Act IV included A Star Is Born songs “Shallow’ and “Always Remember Us This Way.”

The Chromatica Ball tour continues in Stockholm, Sweden, on July 21, stopping off in Paris and Arnhem before arriving in London for two dates at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on July 29-30.

Gaga will kick off the North American leg of the tour in August, starting in Toronto and finishing up in Miami on September 17. Tickets for the UK dates are available to purchase  here.

Posting to Twitter after the show, Gaga wrote: “I love you all so much and missed you thank you for a show I will never forget I’m a monster for life and even monsters can heal.”

Before the show, Gaga  shared a video from backstage  in which she spoke about its meaning and her nerves as she returns to the stage for her first tour since 2018.

“I want to allow you all to interpret this show in the way that you want to, but I will say that it really documents the many different stages and sides of grief and the manic energy of grief that I feel that I’ve experienced in my life,” she said. “I really want to thank you for sticking it out with me and loving me through all the different iterations of my artistry as well as me as a person.”

She continued: “I feel more clear today than I have in a long time and more pain free than I have in ages. And being free of pain on stage is a real healing experience because I’m able to dance and sing and enjoy the audience, enjoy the show, and really tell a story.

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

“I don’t know that I’ve been as speechless as I am today, knowing what we’re about to do,” she added. “But if you know people ask me all the time what ‘Chromatica’ was about and in ‘Babylon,’ I say battle fair life and when I made ‘Chromatica’ I was really battling from my life.”

She continued that the show was created “in the spirit of that battle to win yourself back,”  adding “there’s no greater prize than you.”

“There’s no thing more important than your own heart and your own ability to heal, and we don’t heal on our own, I don’t think, but I think it’s possible to at some point have your own back. And having your own back takes a lot of strength and time.”

Bugging out … Lady Gaga performing in Stockholm.

Lady Gaga: The Chromatica Ball review – a spectacular show of high camp and insect cosplay

Friends Arena, Stockholm Gaga makes a strong claim for pop’s crown with a bombastically hit-stacked show that also creates an intimate human connection

T he opening salvo of Lady Gaga’s Chromatica Ball is one almighty flex. After dabbling in pared-back soft-rock on 2016’s Joanne, and cementing her status as a credible actor via A Star Is Born and House of Gucci , this delayed, 20-date stadium tour – in support of 2020’s synth-pop opus Chromatica – is her chance to make a claim for pop’s crown once again. It certainly feels like it’s on her mind when the grinding synth riff of opener Bad Romance kicks in, only to be followed by a pulverising Just Dance – sent skywards by a roared “Stockholm put your fucking hands up” – which in turn bleeds into Poker Face. As unequivocal statements of intent go, unleashing three of the 21st century’s defining anthems in quick succession is pretty bold.

But this being Lady Gaga , such a rapid-fire blitzkrieg of bangers seems to serve an artistic purpose, too. Housed initially in a surprisingly austere, monochrome set – dubbed the “museum of brutality”, but with a whiff of “multi-storey car park” – she performs Bad Romance trapped inside a modernist dress-shaped tomb with just her face visible. With each song an outer layer is removed, but she remains rooted to the spot, spinning round while bathed in red light as her dancers strut front of stage. Set in among the show’s somewhat muddled narrative of rebirth and salvation, with its five defined acts separated by elongated video interludes that occasionally disturb the show’s momentum, it reads like a comment on the suffocation of early, overwhelming fame, with the following act dubbed The Treatment.

Rebirth and salvation … Lady Gaga.

That frantic early pace is maintained via Chromatica’s Alice – a dark treatise on failing mental health set to bubbling house and performed in bloodied PVC – and the high camp of Replay. Five songs in, Gaga joins her dancers in full-blown choreography, a concession perhaps to the fibromyalgia that caused her to cancel the Joanne tour in 2018. It’s followed by the underrated Monster, a delicious electropop confection linking seduction and cannibalism, that ends with her being mauled by her dancers only to re-emerge in a sparkly red cropped jacket and oversized sunglasses. It’s a gloriously camp flourish and a reminder of the early humour that vanished from 2013’s frustratingly highfalutin Artpop and the po-faced Joanne. Interestingly, neither album is represented in the setlist tonight.

Instead we get a rousing Telephone – complete with huge, skin-melting plumes of fiery pyro – and a brilliant, disco-laced Babylon, in which Gaga sashays around in a gold lamé suit before donning a floor-length cape to take it to its gospel conclusion. Whereas on previous tours she may have artfully glided above the crowd, or traversed the DayGlo stage via raised platforms, here she keeps it simple, walking through the throng during Free Woman to get to a minimally adorned B-stage complete with piano. Always a fan of a blustery ballad, tonight she’s in her element, with the Oscar-winning Shallow causing a mass singalong and shrinking the 40,000 venue to a barroom. Brilliantly, rather than pare back the spectacle, she performs it while dressed as what looks like a purple praying mantis, complete with bulbous headdress and antennae. It’s a testament to her voice that the song’s emotional heft isn’t diluted even when performed in insect cosplay.

In the throng … Lady Gaga walks to her second stage.

The ballad section is also where her crowd interaction shifts from sweary demands for energy to pleading insistence that everyone love themselves. Before a gorgeous Always Remember Us This Way she starts to cry remembering a time she thought she may never be able to perform live again, while an initially stripped back Born This Way is dedicated to her mum who missed the show due to illness. Keen to include everyone, she even dedicates Fun Tonight to “anyone not having fun tonight”.

The spectre of the pandemic haunts the show, too. The Edge of Glory is interrupted by a brief speech about the loneliness of the last few years, while the main set finale of dance goliath Rain on Me – released in peak lockdown – is treated like a huge unleashing of pent-up emotions, Gaga starting and ending it flat on her back breathing heavily into her head mic. It would have made for an ideal end, but she arrives for one more song – this year’s mildly underwhelming Hold My Hand from plane spotter’s thirst trap, Top Gun: Maverick . Bloated and saggy on record, here it just about makes sense, with its OTT 80s balladry beefed up with chunky guitars and lashings of pyro. Taken out of the film’s context and plonked into a roaring stadium it morphs into a song about Gaga’s favourite topic – her relationship with a fanbase that has constantly acted as a healing salve. Now it’s her chance to return the favour. “Promise me, just hold my hand,” she sings, that missing connection finally complete.

Touring worldwide until 17 September.

See the setlist for the Chromatica Ball — Lady Gaga's highly-anticipated 2022 world tour

Lady Gaga is back and better than ever for her first tour in four years: the Chromatica Ball.

The 36-year-old pop star is bringing out some of her classics as well as her newer work, including tracks from her 2020 dance album “Chromatica,” as well as the soundtracks for “A Star Is Born” and “Top Gun: Maverick.”

We scoured social media to find out what she performed at the tour's first stop on Sunday, July 17 in Düsseldorf, Germany. Here's what we discovered.

The Chromatica Ball setlist is:

  • Introduction
  • “Bad Romance”
  • “Poker Face”
  • “Just Dance”
  • “Chromatica I” into “Alice”
  • “Chromatica II” into “911”
  • “Sour Candy”
  • “Telephone”
  • “Chromatica III” into “Babylon”
  • “Free Woman”
  • “Born This Way”
  • “Always Remember Us This Way”
  • “The Edge Of Glory”
  • “Stupid Love”
  • “Rain On Me”
  • “Hold My Hand”

Some fans were disappointed that no songs from her 2013 album "Artpop" or 2016 album "Joanne" were included in the evening's roster of music.

The Chromatica Ball stage

Gaga shared a photo of the stage to her socials on Sunday night with the caption, "This is my dance floor I fought for," lyrics from the song "Free Woman."

In a video shared on her Instagram moments before taking to the stage, Lady Gaga also revealed some details surrounding the Chromatica Ball, which was originally planned for 2020 but was  postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic , explaining, “The stage was inspired by brutalist architecture, materials, textures, crudity, transparency — a real savage and hard look at yourself, what you’ve been though.”

“I want to tell a story but with abstractions and art, so this show celebrates things that I have always loved,” she added. “Art and fashion and dance and music and technology, poetry, and the way all of those things work together.”

Lady Gaga shares how meaningful 'The Chromatica Ball' tour is to her

The singer began her tour on Sunday in Germany.

Lady Gaga has officially launched her long-awaited world tour -- but she admits she once thought she'd never be able to tour again.

On Sunday, the singer took to Twitter to explain how meaningful "The Chromatica Ball" tour -- which opened in Germany over the weekend -- is to her.

"There was a time I thought I’d never be on stage again. I was so sad I couldn’t even dream anything but a painful nightmare," she said. "I’ve overcome my nightmare with love, support, trust, truth, bravery, talent and dedication. I am so grateful."

Gaga later shared her excitement ahead of the opening show, saying on Instagram that she was nervous to tour again after a multi-year pause.

"I feel more clear today than I have in a long time and more pain-free than I have in ages," she said. "Being free of pain, on stage, is a real healing experience because I am able to dance and sing and enjoy the audience and enjoy the show."

Lady Gaga has openly struggled with her mental health , telling fans of her battles with depression, anxiety and PTSD. The Grammy winner was also diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a condition that causes pain all over the body, sleep problems, fatigue and emotional and mental distress, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

"To anyone that doesn’t believe in fibromyalgia: I dare you to spend five minutes in my body on a day when I’m in pain, and then try and say it again," she told Variety in 2018 of her diagnosis.

The "Rain on Me" singer's twice-pandemic-delayed "The Chromatica Ball" tour is on its European leg and will be coming to North America on Aug. 6. The multi-date trek wraps Sept. 17 in Miami, Florida.

Things to do | review: in lady gaga’s sold-out show at wrigley field, every song was a larger-than-life experience.

Author

To call Lady Gaga’s long-awaited show at a sold-out Wrigley Field on Monday a high-level production would be a gross understatement. In a performance for the ages, the pop phenomenon presented a multipart spectacle in which each act revolved around an unspoken theme and contributed to a loose narrative that witnessed the singer journey from literally being trapped to becoming liberated.

Gaga has had plenty of time to strategize. The pandemic derailed the singer’s originally scheduled 2020 date at the Friendly Confines; she postponed her rescheduled 2021 outing for related reasons. Those hiccups followed Gaga’s prior tour in 2018, where chronic pain triggered by fibromyalgia prompted her to cancel several gigs.

Not that she’s been out of the spotlight. Amid an acclaimed Las Vegas residency that commenced in 2018, Gaga released her fifth solo studio album, “Chromatica,” which dominated Monday’s set. She also delivered the national anthem at President Joe Biden’s inauguration; re-teamed with legendary crooner Tony Bennett for a second collaborative LP and several television performances; starred in the film “House of Gucci”; and contributed the theme song and co-composed the score to “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Gaga approached every moment at Wrigley with a similar blend of breathless energy and boundless passion. Billed as “the Chromatica Ball” tour — a concept taken to heart by countless fans who showed up dressed in a colorful array of leather, mesh, wigs, heels, glitter and more — the event seemingly aimed to redefine what a stadium concert could be. To ensure every song doubled as its own experience, Gaga enlisted plenty of help.

An incredible sound system, revolving platform, large second stage, high-def screens, enormous flame plumes and prerecorded interlude videos complemented an entourage of skilled dancers, choreographed routines and Gaga’s now-trademark outrageous costumes. Another equally important detail that all major pop artists should heed but frequently forsake: a versatile backing band.

lady gaga chromatica tour opener

Exploring plight and joy, the theatrical 130-minute show began on a stage informed by brutalist architecture and video footage drenched with blacks, grays and whites. The noir-inspired setting extended to shadowy illumination and a coffin-like, body-enshrouding contraption that initially prevented Gaga from moving everything but her head and arms. It became the first restraint of many that yielded to her vibrant dance moves and dynamic persona.

Gaga exuded bigger-than-life confidence yet repeatedly exhibited generous degrees of sincerity and humility. She interjected spontaneous remarks into verses and choruses at will and, on other occasions, framed songs by recalling history or poking fun at a past version of herself. Though it avoided politics and acknowledged divisions, much of her commentary addressed several main tenets: hope, agreement, courage and love.

Gaga also made a range of brief, subtle homages to other artists. The synth grooves, mechanical hooks and austere motions in “Poker Face” nodded to Annie Lennox during her tenure with the Eurythmics. Donned toward the climax of “Monster,” and used in combination with the zombie motifs of the dance routine and lyrics, an oversized red jacket acknowledged “Thriller”-era Michael Jackson. The pulsating strut, sung-spoken deliveries and power-suit looks flaunted on “Babylon” saluted “Vogue”-period Madonna. When she flashed the sign of the horns on both hands, rolled back her head and stuck out her tongue at the conclusion of “Shallow,” Gaga evoked Kiss bassist Gene Simmons.

Standing on a piano bench while arched forward to reach the keys on “Fun Tonight”? Elton John would be proud. Ditto Bruce Springsteen if the Boss witnessed her collapse on her back on the stage floor from feigned exhaustion before finding a sixth gear to belt out a club banger.

lady gaga chromatica tour opener

Through it all, Gaga remained thoroughly herself: a brilliant performer with a singular identity whose music, lyrics and imagery conveyed universal messages. As she advanced from the dark into the light — enduring various struggles, opening up to vulnerability, embracing independence, daring to be herself and ultimately finding catharsis — it all circled back to a question Gaga posed midway through the event: “Have you ever had to battle for your life?”

One needn’t have asked the same of Gaga; the answer was obvious by way of the feeling and intensity she invested in each note and step. Her blonde hair slicked back, lips painted scarlet red and eyelids framed by a makeup design that resembled butterfly wings, Gaga sang most of the hard-edge “Alice” lying prone on an elevated slab and wearing a collar adorned with nails. That desperation transitioned into pain on the aggressive “Replay,” for which she wore a transparent body suit that appeared smeared with blood — all the better to match the scars and torture described in the song.

When she discovered it, Gaga treated escapism with a related purpose. “LoveGame” featured disco beats that matched the teasing playfulness of the lyrics and grinding guitars that transformed the tune into a hybrid of dance-pop and heavy metal. For the uplifting “Free Woman,” Gaga relied on a formerly underground Chicago creation — house music — and promptly brought intimacy to a stadium environment by slowly parading through the crowd en route to the second stage. Once there, and at a piano, she proved a force of nature.

Allowing her jazz instincts to take control, she effortlessly improvised melodic lines and changed up phrasing. Stripped of accompaniment, Gaga communicated with conviction and naked sensitivity. Grit formed on her lower register; her falsetto traveled to beautiful regions. She handled soaring passages as proficiently as strains that demanded delicacy and restraint.

As she probed and retraced the contours of familiar songs, balladic renditions of “Always Remember Us This Way” and “The Edge of Glory” exposed another facet of Gaga: that of a gospel singer in hiding.

Is there any kind of music Gaga cannot conquer? She’s born that way, indeed.

The tour was originally announced via Gaga's social media on March 5, 2020, as a six-date-long, limited concert series for the summer of that year. It was scheduled to begin on July 24 , 2020 , and conclude on August 19 , 2020 , going to Saint-Denis (France), London (England), Boston (USA), Toronto (Canada), Chicago, and East Rutherford (USA). The announcement was accompanied by a dual-sided graphic, one side an extreme closeup of Gaga's face, sporting the 'Chromatica symbol' on her cheek, mostly covered with a long, straightened, pink wig. The other side of the graphic featured the tour's limited itenerary surrounded by imagery from the music video and promotional campaign for "Stupid Love", the lead single from Chromatica. The tour was postponed to 2021 , on June 26 , 2020 , due to safety concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

On June 2 , 2021 , after Ticketmaster sent Gaga's Chromatica Ball tour ticket holders an email confirming that the tour had been rescheduled to 2022 , EW (Entertainment Weekly) has confirmed through official channels that the performances will not take place in 2021 . Lady Gaga said in a statement within the email:

Ticketmaster has indicated that buyers should hang on to their current tickets as rescheduled dates are finalized. Refunds are currently not available (at the time of the news release, on June 2, 2021), but will be at a future date. The letter from Ticketmaster to each ticket holder also states that:

On March 7 , 2022 , Gaga announced rescheduled shows with additional new dates using new visuals. The once limited tour (6 shows) became a 15-date engagement advertised as "The Chromatica Ball Summer Stadium Tour". On April 14, 2022, two dates in Tokorozawa were announced, marking the singer's first show in Japan in eight years. Three additional North American shows in Hershey, Houston, and Miami were added later on May 16, bringing the tour's total number of shows to 20.

During Gaga's last tour, the Joanne World Tour (2017–2018), the singer was forced to cancel the majority of the European leg of the concert series, due to severe pain caused by fibromyalgia. Shortly before The Chromatica Ball began, Gaga admitted that there "was a time I thought I’d never be on stage again", while adding that she feels "more pain-free than I have in ages."

Lady Gaga ’s Chromatica Ball world tour is in full swing! After being postponed twice, Mother Monster’s highly anticipated tour launched in Germany in July and will roll into Toronto this weekend, followed by Washington, D.C., on Aug. 8 and Gaga’s hometown of New York City on Aug. 11.

See latest videos, charts and news

First announced in 2020, the tour was pushed back two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and fans have been showing up in droves to rock out with the Oscar winner and 13-time Grammy winner. The tour has already raked in more than $80 million , and many of the tickets, both overseas and Stateside, have already sold out.

Dreamy Deals: The 12 Best Mattress Sales to Shop for Sleep Week

“Europe is over 88% sold with 70,000 tickets sold in Paris, 76,000 in London and opener in Düsseldorf, Germany, completely sold out,” Arthur Fogel, president of global touring and chairman for concerts at Live Nation, told Billboard . “Toronto is sold out, New York is basically sold out, Wrigley Field is sold out. Tokyo’s two shows at the Tokyo Dome are sold out — it’s amazing.”

Tickets to the tour are available on Ticketmaster , StubHub , Vivid Seats , SeatGeek (and Gaga’s website) . Passes start at around $56-$110, depending on the ticketing outlet.

Gaga explained the concept behind the Chromatica Ball, which is named after her sixth studio album released in 2020, in a video posted to Instagram last month.

“I wanted to tell a story with abstractions and art,” Gaga shared in an emotional message to fans after the first night of the tour. “This show celebrates things that I have always loved: art, fashion, dance, music, technology, poetry and the way all of those things work together. Everybody has worked so hard on this show, and we love you so much. We’re so grateful.”

“I want to allow you all to interpret this show in the way that you want to, but I will say it really documents the many different stages and sides of grief and the manic energy of grief that I feel like I’ve experience in my life,” she continued. “I really want to thank you for sticking it out with me and loving me through all the different iterations of my artistry as well as me as a person. I feel more clear today than I have in a long time and more pain free than I have in ages. And being free of pain on stage is a real healing experience because I’m able to dance and sing and enjoy the audience, enjoy the show, and really tell a story.”

The Chromatica Ball is scheduled to wrap on Sept. 17 in Miami.

Lady Gaga's 'The Chromatica Ball' opening night in pictures

She has kicked off her postponed tour!

After it was postponed in 2020, pop music icon Lady Gaga kicked off her highly anticipated ' The Chromatica Ball ' summer stadium tour on Sunday 17th July, and incredible photos from the event have now been shared. As well as playing shows across Europe, the 'Sour Candy' singer will be bringing the tour to London for two dates later this month.

The tour is Lady Gaga's first in four years and is in support of her sixth studio album 'Chromatica ' which was released in May 2020. Not only was the album a hit with fans, but the track 'Rain on Me' with Ariana Grande also went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

The first night of 'The Chromatica Ball' tour was a sold-out show in Düsseldorf, Germany at Merkur Spiel- Arena, and it looked amazing! Sunday 17th July saw the first public live performance of the album, including the tracks 'Stupid Love' and 'Alice'.

She also thrilled fans with some of her classic tracks, including smash hits like 'Bad Romance' and 'Poker Face', songs from A Star Is Born like 'Shallow' and 'Always Remember Us This Way', as well as a performance of 'Monster' for the first time in eight years.

The tour will now continue across Europe, Asia and North America, with UK dates confirmed for July. After just one London show was originally scheduled, in March Lady Gaga shared the exciting news that she would be playing a second show at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Lady Gaga Sets SF Ablaze With Three-Hour Chromatica Ball Extravaganza, Complete With Many Fire Cannons

The most anticipated concert tour of 2022 fired up SF Thursday night, as Lady Gaga delivered three hours of glorious pop delirium, more than a half-dozen outfits, and gigantic blazing cannons shooting humongous flames across Oracle Park.

Lady Gaga’s Chromatica Ball tour was supposed to have already happened two years ago. But the parade of horrors that was the year 2020 delayed the whole thing until  this summer, with the much-anticipated San Francisco stop finally scheduled to arrive Thursday night at Oracle Park.

But the way this week went with horrible heatwaves and blackouts , it honestly felt a little uncertain a couple days back. Would she still play this big-budget, special effects extravaganza if there were rolling blackouts all over the East Bay? And w hat if Oracle Park lost power?

lady gaga chromatica tour opener

Fortunately for Lady Gaga’s legions of Bay Area fans, circumstances cooperated, and her dazzling, nearly three-hour set made the unpleasantness of the past week seem like a distant memory. SFist was there at the show, and yes we were in the cheap seats. (But have you seen those tickets prices? There are no cheap seats!)

She took the stage at 8:46 p.m., more than an hour past the scheduled start time, much to the relief of a very late-arriving Oracle Park crowd that clearly had trouble getting out of the house with their own highly involved wardrobe decisions.

And that was a good thing for us slowpokes, because she started with three bangers right off the bat: “Bad Romance,” “Poker Face,” and “Just Dance,” immediately covering the late 2000s Gaga ooh-la-la and mum-mum-mum-mah material that put her on the map.

Sure, it was the exact same set as every show of the tour. But there is a special connection between Lady Gaga and San Francisco, which did make this one special. She gave shouts out to Tony Bennett, her longtime hairstylist Frederic Aspiras (to whom she dedicated “Born This Way”), and Chromatica producer BloodPop, who happened to be in the house Thursday night.

And oh, those giant flame-shooting cannons! Certainly this show went to that well of flame-shooting cannons a lot. But honestly, gigantic bursts of fire never get old, and these flame-shooters were situated all over the field-level seating of Oracle Park.

Another trick the show pulled quite frequently was the color-coordinated constellation of tiny lights in the lower-level seats, utilized on most of the slower numbers, as she did for “Always Remember Us This Way” from A Star is Born .

Lady Gaga has clearly developed a remarkable versatility to transform her upbeat rager tracks into tasteful slow ones. She actually started “Born This Way” as a quiet, contemplative solo piano number, before it exploded (with flaming cannons of course) into the full-blast dance track you’re used to. She performed “Edge of Glory” entirely as a downtempo track, but led the crowd in such a passionate sing-along that the number was still remarkably high-energy.

Lady Gaga well-exceeded the very high expectations with her Thursday night SF show, with 21 songs, at least half a dozen over-the-top outfits, and more cake make-up than a bus full of drag queens going to Reno for Easter weekend. The beautifully mild weather definitely helped the vibe, and the nearly full moon over the outdoor venue even left Gaga’s herself a little breathless. We don’t know if she handed out stacks of cash to people living on the street , as she did for her 2017 show here. But certainly everyone who attended The Chromatica Ball tour show Thursday night left feeling (and looking) like a million bucks.
