Updated April 2, 2024 — Welcome to one of the most exciting dog sledding tours in Wisconsin! You don’t have to travel to Siberia to experience authentic dog sledding. Indeed, Siberia Outpost outside Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, delivered more adrenalin than anticipated.

He also works with an animal foster organization. “Right now, I have 16 running and two in retirement.”

“The vet bills are a killer, and that’s just for checkups,” he says, patting Bear’s head.

Wisconsin Dog Sledding: The Musher's Pedal

“They’re excited and ready to run,” announces Jim. “Time to get in the sled.”

The dogs are anxious to get going. Once I climb aboard, we take off to the woods. “We’ll stay on the wooded trails too keep out of the wind,” says Jim giving a few suitable pumps from his foot at the back of the sled. It’s the musher’s pedal, he says.

Then we’re off!

My dog sledding tour in Wisconsin

The wind burns my cheeks as we pick up speed. The dogs dash through the woods on a tight, groomed trail. On his 37 acres of land, Jim has developed over three miles of trails.

“Back here, I have the nicest trails possible,” he touts. “Every snowfall needs to be packed.” Jim purchased a mini-snowmobile trail grooming machine to do the job. He also maintains the trails all summer long by hauling gravel and wood chips and cutting the brush away from the track.

I’m surprised at the feeling of euphoria as we glide over a frozen pond. Just watching the sixteen dogs working in harmony and running effortlessly makes me joyful. If I’d known that dog sledding in Wisconsin was so fun, I would have done it sooner…and more frequently!

Siberian Outpost: Memories that last

After the adrenaline-pumping ride with trees whizzing by, I hang out with the dogs. Siberian Outpost certainly created memories that will last with me forever. I learned so much about dog sledding in Wisconsin and dog handling in general.

At first, I’d been a little nervous being around so many dogs that I didn’t know. But Jim quelled my fears right away.

“None of them bites,” he assured me and then laughed. “I’m the only one around here that bites.” He points to one of the Siberian Huskies’ ears that has a bite mark out of it.

“The school kids love that one,” he jokes.

“When a car pulls up, they know they are going for a run,” says Jim. “They are always excited when they see someone coming.”

Newspapers and magazines around the nation have featured stories about Jim’s dog sledding tours. People have traveled from Germany, Israel and Australia to go dog sledding at Siberian Outpost.

Siberian Outpost is only 30 minutes from Christi’s Inn in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, where I stayed during my winter adventure.

My winter getaway included hiking the Ice Age Trail on Sturgeon Bay in Lake Michigan, eating local cheese in cozy backwoods restaurants and going dog sledding in Wisconsin.

Dog sledding is a winter thrill in Wisconsin's Northwoods

dog sled tours wisconsin

There are a lot of reasons to hate winter.

But this is one reason to love it: mushing through a pine-filled forest as snow tops the trees with a fresh coat of white.

A smile is plastered to my face as I bounce up and down in the bed of a sled being pulled by five Siberian huskies that seem to be having the time of their lives, too, sprinting down a snow-covered trail.

I’m at Top of the Hill Huskies, a kennel outside Phelps that began offering dog sled experiences in December. The two-hour outing includes a chance to not only ride in a sled, but also drive your own team.

The best part: Almost anyone can do it. The kennel has a variety of sleds that even infants can ride in and older kids can drive, and they can tailor the experience to whatever visitors feel comfortable doing. Add in a campfire with marshmallows, plus a walk-out basement to warm up in, and it makes for a great family-friendly winter experience.

The business is a family affair, too, run by mother-daughter team Diane and Amelia Gagliano, who have 20 dogs each, with the help of a few young mushers including 16-year-old Ellyn Reese. Diane doesn't mush anymore, but Amelia and Ellyn do, competing in area races.

Diane Gagliano said they raced huskies as a hobby for eight years before she decided to open a business and offer rides this year. They had her first group on Dec. 20 and have been busy ever since.

"You always know the dogs are happy — they sing a lot. After the first day of rides, they sang that afternoon and evening three times. It was really cool. They’re having a blast,” she said.

The experience starts in her basement that overlooks the dog kennel outside. After visitors sign a waiver, it’s time to go out and meet the dogs.

Gagliano said she’ll usually have a team tied to a trailer ready for guests to greet.

But on my visit, she asks her young mushers to bring a few out. The moment the first dog leaves their fenced-in yard, the rest realize what is happening and erupt in a cacophony of yips and howls.

“They get so excited,” Gagliano said. “It’s like taking a walk. They get jealous if they don’t get to do it.”

Gagliano introduced me to the five lucky dogs that were getting their chance that day, and showed me how to put on their harness. I stooped down next to Dove, a 12-year-old bi-eyed husky (one blue eye and one brown), and slipped the harness over her head and under her legs. The young mushers harnessed the rest, then tied the team — led by Dove — to a nearby sled with a padded seat in its bed.

Since Gagliano isn't able to mush anymore, she has others help with that part of her business — sometimes professional guest mushers, and other times a staff member like Bethany Heft, who used to mush for fun as a kid and now helps Gagliano when she’s not working as an environmental educator at Trees for Tomorrow, a nonprofit in Eagle River.

Heft stood on the sled’s brake as I sat in the bed and tucked a blanket around my legs. After confirming I was set, she released the brake, gave the dogs the go command, “hike!” and we were off.

The dogs charged down one of the four trails that loops through Gagliano’s property. This was the first time they had been able to run on the trails since the end of December. With poor snow cover, the trails were too bumpy for rides, so Gagliano took guests to a nearby Forest Road in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

But with fresh snow falling through the day, we were able to get back on the dogs’ home turf. And after all the barking in the yard, the only sounds now were their harnesses jingling as they ran and the drag mat that Heft stood on to slow them down.

“This is with the brake fully applied,” Heft said as the dogs sprinted down the trail and I clutched the side of the sled to stay upright. “They’re fast.”

Heft said a team was once clocked going 17 miles per hour while taking a guest for a ride. We didn't hit that speed, but we were going fast enough for it to be thrilling.

“Good team! ... Good job! ... Hike up!” Heft shouted at the dogs as we cruised through the forest, along with a couple gee's (right) and haw's (left) to direct them.

But on their home trails, “the dogs know where to go,” she said as they followed a fork in the trail to the right.

They sure did. At another fork, they took an alternate route to visit their friends — the 20 dogs in Amelia’s separate kennel.

Diane — who had been following us on an ATV — helped get the team back on track and we looped back to her yard to finish the ride.

There, the young mushers took Dove and Meaty — two of the oldest and slowest dogs, best for a beginner like me — and hooked them to a smaller sled while Heft gave me a lesson in mushing. I practiced standing on the sled’s runners and shifting my weight from one side to the other, plus stepping on the drag mat.

She stood on the brake again as I got set, then I gave the command — hike! — and we were off on our own, running down a mostly straight trail to Gagliano at the other end. She helped turn the team around, and I went for a few more runs before calling it quits for the day.

After mushing, guests can enjoy a bonfire, hot cocoa and marshmallows, then say goodbye to the dogs to wrap up the two-hour experience.

Gagliano said she modeled her business after Endurance Kennels in Duluth, Minn., whose owner told her people were looking for a Goldilocks experience between the short, 15-minute rides that are offered at some special events and the long, expensive full-day trips from other kennels.

Two hours is about the right amount of time to fully experience the joy of mushing without remembering you’re cold or wet.

But as I got back into my car and started to realize I was a little bit of both, even then it didn’t matter. Winter’s drawbacks were far outweighed by its dog-sledding benefits.

More information : Top of the Hill Huskies’ two-hour dog sledding adventure is available by reservation and costs $115 for adults (age 15 and older) and $90 for kids (age 4-14); kids age 3 and under are free. Call (715) 891-2704 or email  [email protected]

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the kennel requires face coverings when inside and recommends them when outside. Groups are limited to six or fewer.

Top of the Hill Huskies is on County Highway A, Phelps, about 15 miles north of Eagle River. Fore more information, see  topofthehillhuskies.com .

Since 1997 Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing has provided dog sledding tours in Northern Bayfield County near Bayfield, Wisconsin.

Wolfsong provides a genuinely unique and hands-on experience. Don’t expect to be a passive participant tucked in cozy in the front of a dog sled as you glide through the Bayfield County forests. Although this may be a part of your dog sledding adventure, the dogs prefer you get up close and personal.

Wolfsong’s 40 Siberian Huskies are a friendly bunch and are eager to meet you. Your dog sledding experience will begin by getting to know the dogs and learning how to harness the dogs to the sleds.

With the ability to include six sleds during your dog sledding tour, the Wolfsong guides can accommodate up to 6 people. And all tours begin and end at the Wolfsong kennel.

Wolfsong’s guides will carry passengers on the trail through the hilly terrain of Bayfield County’s pine and hardwood forests. But for those willing, our guides also provide instructions to allow you to drive your own sled and personal team of dogs.

Picture yourself standing on the runners on the back of your wooden sled. You glide smoothly through snow-covered trails, bright sunshine, the cold breeze hitting your face, and one of the biggest smiles you’ve ever had.

You’ll follow the Wolfsong guides through the forest leading you and your team of dogs on a one-of-a-kind adventure.

You can stop trailside to enjoy a hot and hearty lunch. You’ll also enjoy time with the dogs, petting and nuzzling them, thanking them for leading you on this exhilarating journey before winding your way back to the kennel.

At the end of your dog sledding tour, you’ll:

  • Help unharness the dogs
  • Lead them back to their warm & cozy kennel
  • Give them one last scratch behind the ears
  • Feed them a special treat— which doesn’t feel like enough for this heartwarming experience

Are you ready to participate in one of Wisconsin’s best winter activities?

Which Dog Sledding Tour Are You Going to Pick?

All dog sledding tours at Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing average around 3 hours. The amount of time spent on the trail is the same whether your group includes two people or six.

The amount of time needed to prepare for your trip depends on your group size. If you only need to utilize two sleds, the time needed to get the dogs ready and harness them, along with handling instructions, takes less time than harnessing all six sleds.

Whether you book a dog sledding tour in the morning, afternoon, or sunset, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. The tours offered by Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing include:

  • Morning Dog Sledding Adventure
  • Afternoon Dog Sledding Adventure

Wolfsong is able to accommodate children and adults in their dog sledding tours. Children 12 and under will remain passengers tucked into the front of the dog sled driven by one of the Wolfsong guides. Children and adults 13 and older may learn how to handle the dogs and drive a dog sled on the trail if they wish. Larger groups may take turns driving dog sleds or riding as a passenger.

Hecktic Travels

Dog Sledding in Wisconsin

Words by Dalene Heck / Photography by Pete Heck

Wisconsin is known for its winter activities. As winter loving Canadians we knew we were going to love it in the coldest of seasons. There were so many activities we could choose from. We could ice skate and glide across one of the countless frozen lakes. Or perhaps we would find ourselves careening down one of the many sledding hills in Wisconsin . But what had us most excited was the chance to go dog sledding.

Wolfsong Dog sledding-008

“You ready?” Mary me asked with a gleam in her eye, knowing full well that her fur children certainly were. They were yelping, jumping, howling, and pulling their ropes tight, eager for the brake to be released so they were free to run. It had to be their favorite time of the day.

I was as excited as they were, I knew I was in for a fun time. I had only been on a dog sled once before back in Canada, but never with full control of my own team. This time I was on my own.

“The colder the better.” John, the owner of Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing , had explained earlier in our training. “if it’s too hot, just think of it as your car overheating, it’s not good to run them that hard.” We laid out the food for the dogs and received careful instruction on how to handle the sled and our team.

Dinner time

He made sure to tell us something personal about each pup and the story of how they arrived at Wolfsong and started their “dog sledding in Wisconsin” adventure. The dogs all sat quietly, waiting patiently to be introduced and then be indulged in a barrage of attention and love. “You need to make sure they know you are confident and in control. Otherwise they won’t trust you.”

Wolfsong is a company that takes great pride in their dogs and their business. From the well manicured grounds that were kept extremely clean, to an enormous playpen where the dogs sleep at night and have lots of room to run around, you could tell the owners loved every single one of the pups.

And really, look at those faces! What’s not to love?

Ready to Go

They’ve even adopted a theme-based naming system and some of the following names I thought were very clever:

The Egg Litter – Benny, Mickey (short for McMuffin), and Diablo (deviled) The Dr. Seuss Litter – Cindy Lou, Horton, and Green Eggs The Tea litter – Ice and Earl Grey The Steak litter – T-Bone, Porter, and Minnie (short for Filet Mignon)

Diablo and Horton led my sled, followed by Benny and Mickey.

Waiting

My brake was released and my dogsled adventure was off to a flying start.

We winded around corners, dipped through valleys and ran around frozen lakes. The dogs were in their element, and I was just along for the very joyful ride.

Wolfsong Dog sledding

When we stopped to rest I made sure to give praise to each one of them. The dogs rolled around in the snow and continued pulling at the reigns, they just wanted to go again. Even after just a couple of hours I felt connected to my team. I jumped back on the sled and we took off, but only because this time it was the dogs telling me: “Let’s Go” .

Pete and his team

There’s something so magical about Husky dogs. Their eyes, their beautiful coats, the strength they have to run and pull the sleds, and their pure ecstatic joy in doing so. Dalene grew up with two of them as pets, and she has many stories of them pulling her around town on a toboggan. I was a city boy, I only saw major dog sled races on the TV. This was an unforgettable afternoon.

If you have never experienced sledding with a team of Huskies, then you will really enjoy this video. It is unbelievable how excited they get to start running!

**Special thanks to Diablo, Horton, Benny, Mickey, and all the great staff of Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing in Bayfield, Wisconsin for hosting my dog sledding experience.

Wow, what a great experience. I haven’t been dog sledding yet but when I do, I want to make sure they love their dogs and treat them well. The dogs look happy and always ready to go.

Agreed, and Wolfsong sure takes care of theirs. I swear the dogs were smiling all day 🙂

What amazingly gorgeous dogs!

That looks so much fun! I definitely want to do that some day!

It was my first time driving a sled and it was so much fun. Highly recommended if you have the chance, cheers Jarmo!

So cool! This is in my bucket list, I hope it happens soon. By the way, I didn’t know it could be done in Wisconsin…and I’ve been there many times!

It’s waaayyyyy in the North, so if you venture up that way make sure to look these guys up. The dogs are in heaven right now the temps are about -20 degrees.

Yeah…did you know I lived in Houghton (in the UP) for a year?? All I remember is snow lol

My Mom grew up in northern Manitoba and her uncle had sled dogs for trap lines. Beautiful, beautiful dogs.

They are such beautiful dogs, and they just LOVE to run.

This is so on my bucket list.

I get weirded out by huskies sometimes with the coloring making them look like they are pissed off all the time but these guys look amazing.

LOL, these guys looked like they were smiling all day. Hope you get to tick this one of your list soon 🙂

I love the naming system! So fun. I saw this advertised in Iceland and was definitely tempted, but it was actually too warm while we were there. Next time!

I loved the naming system too, so clever! I imagine you have to be though with 46 dogs 🙂

Too bad it was so warm, but yes there’s always a next time!

Aww this is incredible! I love dog-sledding! I also have my own husky x named Scotia and she is the greatest. I have such a fondness for huskies in general, they are such magnificent dogs indeed. It looked like you had such a great time. Can’t wait to read more about your winter adventures (especially those upcoming in Finland!)

Thanks Chrystal! And we’re definitely looking forward to the possibility of dog sledding in Finland. Dalene was bummed she missed out on this.

I adore huskies and once visited a sled dog farm near Whitehorse, though it was pre-snow season and I was taken on a run with a 4 wheel bike instead. Walking down the lines of kennels and meeting a few of the dogs was such a pleasure, though the cuteness factor went off the scale when I go to hold a puppy! Hope to experience such a place again one day – in snow.

That must have been an experience on a 4 wheel bike, I can’t imagine. And how cute that puppy must have been!!

Always wanted to do this! Looks like plenty of fun!

Lots of fun for sure. I don’t imagine too much snow where you are? That only means you’ll have to make it over to snowland and do it 🙂

Nope! 37 degrees C here in Melbourne tomorrow… just another excuse we need to get over to North America in Winter! Hope all is well with you two! 🙂

That is TOO hot. Yikes!

i really want to do this.

as a new dog owner, i can really see how certain dogs just WANT to do certain things, based on their breed. my dog wants to herd people/other dogs. these doggies just wanna pull. so cute.

Thanks Annie. Yes, these guys definitely want to pull and run and run and run. It’s so much fun if you get the chance to do it!

A nice story. The photos of the dogs are great! Love the one with an open mouth and ice around it 🙂 Would love to do a dog sled one day.

Isn’t Bayfield amazingly magical too? Just moving back to Wisconsin (lovely -15 F this morning…) so loved reading about your adventures here. Now anxious for your sun-drenched stories!

We got to go dog sledding twice last year and it was such a great experience both times. I’d love to see a dog sled race like the Iditarod in person one day.

For sure that would be pretty cool to see in person. To compete in it would be out of this world…

Aloha Mr&Mrs Heck When you travel to Finland Let me welcome you warmly to cafe Murunen (Sweetheart) to have best super hot chocolate you’ve ever tasted 🙂

Welcome to the north!

Kalle/ Murunen (Fb : Murunen , instagram : Murunen )

Aloha Kalle!

Thank you so much for your invite and I hope we have the opportunity to come to your Cafe! We are big fans of hot chocolate 🙂

Best wishes, Pete and Dalene

Sled dogs are so cool. I hope one day to have to opportunity to do this, too.

I hope you do too Laura 🙂 It’s so much fun.

what a great experience to mush with the huskies. One of my favorite friends is a musher in Minnesota – he has Samoyeds though ( http://winterlong.com/ ) little puffs of white – ok they’re huge but really sweet.

Samoyeds are SO cute! Any of those fluffy dogs I would love to take around the world with me, as long as they carried their own backpacks. 🙂

I have a Samoyed, which is also a sledding dog, and can just imagine how much fun it’d be taking her out in the snow like this! Loved this post, what a great experience!

Gotta love those huskies ! Thanks for sharing.

Loved Loved Loved this post! It was so cute. Can’t wait to try dog-sledding. It looks really fun!

They’re such beautiful animals. Those eyes get me every time! This looks like such a fun experience, I have to try it myself sometime!

Great video and wow, did that one pup ever howl. 🙂

Ha! I laugh every time I watch the video and see that puppy losing it. He was so excited!

Really would love to go dogsledding like this someday! And I love hearing about sledding companies that truly seem to love their dogs. I’ve met some sled dogs before (Iditarod dogs in Alaska, no less!), and they are so sweet – and so in love with pulling that sled!

You have to do it Amanda! Surely you can’t be too far from finding an opportunity to do so? It’s so much fun!

Tahquamenon Falls in Michigan offers sled dog rides on Thursdays in February, along the river. Always wanted to take my daughter. It sounds like you had a great time!

This certainly seems like a lot of fun. Those dogs are just beautiful!

  • Pingback: This Month In Reading | World Flavor

SO FUN. I’ve only ever done this in Svalbard (Arctic Norway), and there was no snow so we did it on sleds with wheels!

I loved that video! Benny (or Mickey?) is clearly so excited to get moving. This sounds like such an incredible adventure.

I always had a blind spot for Husky dogs. I think it’s because of their eyes. I would love to try dog sledding…

They have to be one of the most beautiful breed of dogs, for sure! We had two growing up, and I LOVED them (even if they were a bit too hyper!)

This looks like so much fun, it’s definitely on my bucket list!

That looks great. I would love to try it, but worry I wouldn’t be able to control the dogs. It takes me quite a while for my confidence to develop in a new situation like that. That and convincing Ali to come to a place that cold could be difficult. Wonder if they have dog sledding in Iceland?

They really aren’t hard to control at all – very well trained. I think it’s actually quite relaxing! I bet they do have it in Iceland (and we just did it in Finland today)!

This looks so much fun!!! I would Love to do this some day. Have to get my husband to go too. The Dogs are beautiful and look happy.

Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing

Wolfsong Adventures is owned and operated by Jen Dale and was started in 1997 by John and Mary Thiel. Jen had worked for the Thiels for 10 years before purchasing Wolfsong in 2018. She has been dogsledding since 1995 when she bought her first Siberian Husky at the age of 12 and has worked in the outdoor adventure industry since 2002. Throughout her career as an outdoor enthusiast she has paddled over 1200 miles in northern Canada, kayak guided in Alaska and Lake Superior, and captained sailing vessels. But her real passion still remains with the dogs and enjoying engaging others in the wonder of the sport of dogsledding.

Chris Dale (Jen’s brother-in-law) joined the team in 2011 and is a great addition with his calm nature and can-do-anything abilities!

Jojo Weishar joined Wolfsong in 2019 after mushing for other dogsled operations in the Midwest. She also has worked as a kayak guide on Lake Superior and is a world traveler.

Bayfield Winter Adventures

They have all mushed thousands of miles and trained hundreds of new mushers. This experience has proven that small group sizes, well trained, happy dogs and good trails are the components of a great mushing program.

The Setting

Nestled in the hills overlooking Lake Superior in Bayfield County, Wisconsin is Wolfsong, Adventures in Mushing. “The best dogsledding trails in the Lower 48″ extend right from the kennel out into the remote hilly terrain of the Bayfield Peninsula, home of the Apostle Islands Dogsled Race. With an average of 150” of snow, we have good conditions from Christmas through late March every year.

The Mushing

Why does Wolfsong have the best trips in the business? Why does over half of our business come from return guests each year? Small group sizes for the most hands-on experience, great trails, and well-trained, happy dogs. For some, helping harness the dogs and riding in the sled is enough. Others want to learn everything they can about mushing and driving their own team. Everyone has a different reason for coming, and our trips satisfy them all.

Women's Wisconsin Dog Sledding

Ladies, check dog sledding off of your bucket list. Take a trek up to Northern Wisconsin for an extended weekend of outdoor winter adventures on the snowy coast of the mighty Lake Superior.  On our Women’s Wisconsin Dog Sledding and Snowshoeing Adventure will feel like an artic explorer as we discover the Northwoods by dog sled and hike to hidden Lake Superior Ice Caves on snowshoes.

“This is the real deal! ” — That what our partners have to say about their dogsledding tours.

Our partners on our Women’s Wisconsin Dog Sledding and Snowshoeing Adventure are a woman-owned and operated kennel is comprised of 42 Seppala Siberian Huskies which are direct descendants of Togo and Balto who helped deliver the life saving serum to the children of Nome during the outbreak of Diptheria in 1925.

From start to finish, participants will be involved in all stages of mushing. Every trip begins with participants meeting each dog and learning about them.   Then, your guides will teach you how to harness dogs and hook up the teams. Once everyone, and every dog is ready, we head out on some of the most beautiful forested trails in Northern Wisconsin.

Not just a walk in the woods.

Led by a local naturalist and guide, participants on our Women’s Wisconsin Dog Sledding and Snowshoeing Adventure will take on two totally different worlds by snowshoe. An introductory forest hike at sunset will immerse you into a wintery world after dark where you will uses your senses to navigate and search for signs of wildlife. ►Day 3: Morning Lake Superior Ice Caves Snowshoe Hiking & Afternoon Dog Sledding

Breakfast in cabins.

Morning: Red Cliff Lake Superior Ice Caves 8am-12pm

This adventure showcases the magical multicolored ice formations found along Lake Superior’s winter shoreline. We begin at Frog Bay Tribal Park winding our way through a majestic, old-growth hemlock/cedar forest, then cross over the frozen Frog Creek coastal wetland. Tracks of otter, fox, fisher and coyotes are common here. Then we venture onto a frozen Lake Superior, following the shoreline south towards Red Cliff Bay. This tour offers views of 9 of the Apostle Islands. As we move down the shoreline, red sandstone rock outcrops begin to rise up and tower up to 100 feet above the lake. These cliff formations are the source of the “Red Cliff Indian Reservation” name. Groundwater seeps year round from the sandstone, and in winter creates amazing ice formations. Pictures best describe their beauty. Several caves have been carved into the sandstone for us to explore.

Note:  Tour length is 3.5 – 4  hours snowshoeing over level terrain. Temperatures ranging from the low 30’s to below zero. Windy conditions could create extreme cold depending on wind direction. Packed lunch provided.
