beautiful villages towns gran canaria

Gran Canaria is a popular beach destination for Europeans, but there's much more to see on the island besides the beaches and the resorts. The Canary Islands have a wealth of beautiful landscapes and charming villages, many of them hidden in the mountains, which you should really visit.

In our opinion, the Canary Islands are a really unique place in the world so make sure to go out and explore, discover the beautiful villages and towns and enjoy the unique landscapes.

Most beautiful towns and villages in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is the second-largest Canary Island in terms of population and although Las Palmas is a large city , one of the top 10 cities in Spain, the rest of the island is full of small charming villages and towns, which are ideal for day trips.

gran canaria tejeda

Tejeda is a village in the center of Gran Canaria and it's often considered as one of the most beautiful villages in  Spain and in consequence, one of the most charming villages in the Canary Islands.

Many people come to Tejeda to see the iconic Roque de Nublo, but we also recommend you to go on one of the many hiking trails, to explore more of the natural surroundings. Many hiking trails will start from Cruz de Tejeda.

agaete gran canaria

Agaete is a fishing village in the north of  Gran Canaria and it's a place with a lot of charm.

You can go to Agaete to have lunch with fresh caught fish, then go and take a dip in the natural swimming pools.

Many visitors also used to come to Agaete to see the rock formation known as "God's finger", which sadly got destroyed in a storm a few years ago. Nevertheless, the village is still worth visiting, as the landscapes around it are breathtaking.

teror gran canaria

Teror is a small town in the center of Gran Canaria and it's often seen as the heart and soul of the island.

In Teror you should pay a visit to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pine (Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pino), which is dedicated to the patron saint of Gran Canaria, so it has great importance. Teror is also a beautiful village to visit in Gran Canaria due to the beautifully preserved Canarian architecture, with its authentic wooden balconies.

arucas gran canaria

Arucas is located only a few minutes away by car from Las Palmas and it is home to the amazing church of San Juan Bautista, popularly known as " the cathedral of Arucas ".

This church is one of the It is one most impressive building in Gran Canaria and it is really worth seeing. Also in Arucas, you can go visit the Arehucas rum factory, which is the most popular rum produced in the Canary Islands.

aguimes gran canaria

Aguimes is located in the municipality with the same name, located in the southeast of the island.

The old town of  Aguimes is worth seeing on a stroll, with no rush, as it's one of the most beautiful in Gran Canaria. It is a peaceful place, preserving the Canarian architecture and nearby you can visit other places, where you can marvel at the natural landscapes of Gran Canaria, like Temisas or Barranco  Guayadeque.

firgas village gran canaria

Villa de Firgas is known in Gran Canaria as the village of water, and it sits in the north of the island, in the municipality with the same name.

Firgas is situated about 28 km away from Las Palmas and it sits at an altitude of 465 m above sea level.

We recommend you to take a walk around the historic center of Firgas to see the Paseo de Gran Canaria and the Paseo de Canarias, the square and the Parish Church of San Roque and the Firgas water mill.

After visiting the village, you can venture out to Doramas Natural Park to see the ravines and the abundance of vegetation, which makes for a very different landscape, when compared to the south of the island.

If you only need to visit 4, to get an overview of the different styles:

  • Las Palmas old town
  • Puerto de Mogan
  • Tejeda or Artenara, depending on your route.

Aguïmes

Why we love it

Aguïmes is truly our favorite spot on Gran Canaria. We loved the maze of alleyways. The houses in the old center are made of stone and covered with lime. We found the city very photogenic. What’s more, you can go camel-hunting – a surprising statue in the heart of these alleys – for a fun photo opportunity.

ruelle Aà guïmes

Attractions

  • Colorful alleyways
  • The statues in the village, especially the one of the camel

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Gran Canaria

  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • If you’re planning to explore the mountains, don’t take the smallest cars. A more powerful engine will be more comfortable.
  • But don’t take too big a car either, as some roads are narrow.
  • There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early .

4. Artenara

Artenara Center

Artenara is the village of panoramic views. From the village, you can admire the valley dominated by Roque Nublo, which stands out perfectly against the blue sky. These views inspired one of Spain’s most important writers, Miguel de Unamuno. One of the watchtowers is dedicated to him. We really enjoyed taking in the sights and visiting the museums. This village offers a pleasant mix of points of interest.

Panorama from Artenara

  • Viewpoints and sculpture
  • Troglodyte houses with a museum

5. Puerto de Mogan

Puerto de Mogan alley

Puerto de Mogan is one of Gran Canaria’s best-known towns. Tourists have nicknamed it Gran Canaria’s “Little Venice” because part of the town around the port has a few canals.

The atmosphere of this town is quite unique on the island. We really enjoyed wandering around, admiring the white houses with their colorful borders and the perspectives in the alleyways. What’s more, this part of town is very well kept with bougainvillea and other flowers. There are many restaurants here, creating a lively atmosphere in the evenings.

The pedestrianized center of Arucas is extremely charming. We start with its impressive Cathedral, with its many sculptures and intricate details. It’s one of the most beautiful buildings on the island, and perhaps even in the Canaries. Then we recommend you explore the narrow streets of the town: see the colorful houses, the balconies, the garden…

This is one of the island’s most visited mountain villages. It is, in our opinion, less charming than the others for its architecture, but it is exceptional in terms of panorama. It really is a Balcon village with views over the valley and mountains.

Tejeda

  • Main street
  • The sculptures
  • From Las Palmas = 1h30
  • From Maspalomas = 1h10

  • Southern Gran Canaria
  • From Puerto de Mogan = 45 min
  • Fataga is included in this tour, which covers several villages – see program and availability .

6 other towns and villages to discover

And if you still have time, we also recommend the following towns and villages.

Galdar

Galdar is another town with a historic center. We loved the museums, but were less charmed by the narrow streets. Here you’ll find the Cueva Pintada archaeological site and the Antonio Padrón museum. North-west Gran Canaria, 35 min from Las Palmas.

best towns to visit gran canaria

A village famous for its staircase fountain. It is indeed surprising, but you should know that there’s nothing else to see in the village. North of the island, 30min from Las Palmas.

13. La Aldea de San Nicolas

La Adlea

Charming little village off the beaten track. It offers beautiful views of cliffs and small archaeological sites. South-west of the island, 1h20 from Las Palmas

Agaete

We saw the port part of Algaete (Puerto de la Nieves) and a little further up is the town of Agaete with a beautiful church and a small garden. The town is also home to the Maipes archaeological site. Northwest of Gran Canaria, 40 min from Las Palmas.

Telde aqueduct

Telde has some attractive buildings and points of interest, such as the aqueduct. However, it’s not a tourist town, it’s a town where the locals live, and finding parking can be very complicated. North-east of Gran Canaria, 30min from Las Palmas.

16. Arguineguin

Arguineguin

Arguineguin is a more authentic part of Gran Canaria’s south coast. In the midst of all the seaside resorts, it’s nice to stroll around this more authentic town. South of Gran Canaria, 45 min from Las Palmas.

The Port of Las Nieves in Agaete It is without a doubt our favorite among the coastal towns of Gran Canaria. Its people, its atmosphere and its maritime atmosphere conquer anyone . The houses are white with blue and sailor touches. On the other hand, the beaches of Puerto de Las Nieves are pebbly, but it has a swimming area on the pier, as well as the natural pools of Las Salinas. The cliffs that accompany the town are spectacular, making Agaete an idyllic place .

50 Of The Best Places To Visit in Gran Canaria

Hello peeps! Looking for any plans during the weekend in Gran Canaria? Of course, you can find plenty of info on the net, but nothing like the recommendations of a native islander (like me). I’ve been collecting some of the best places to visit in Gran Canaria to take amazing photos. Enjoy them and let me know your comments!

best towns to visit gran canaria

Gran Canaria is such an amazing place that it’s been a difficult task for me to reduce the list to just 50 spots, so maybe I will share another list in the future… with at least another 50! But, I have tried to make a good summary of what to expect in Gran Canaria: beaches, nature, towns and architecture.

These spots have not been ordered, just distributed into different areas:

  • Las Palmas Area
  • South & East Gran Canaria,
  • North & West Gran Canaria
  • Center Gran Canaria, that is, the mountains…

Enjoy the list and in case you need more info, or just want to let me know about other spots that I have left outside the list, you can just contact me at [email protected] . Looking forward to reading from you!

Places To Visit in Gran Canaria: Las Palmas Area

This first section of this post about things to see in Gran Canaria has been dedicated to Las Palmas urban area. It’s the more populated area of the island and there are so many places to see. I’ve tried to offer some different things to visit: from beaches to view points, aquariums or nature.

There are many more things to discover of course, but I think this is a good summary!

1. Playa de Las Canteras

Places To Visit in Gran Canaria: East & South

Southern Gran Canaria is probably the most visited area of the island as it is the most touristic one. But, when they come to the island, many visitors just spend their whole stay in a hotel or apartment and their surroundings. But the south of the island is much more than that…

Also, I have added the eastern part of Gran Canaria in this section, because I am aware many digital nomads and remote workers rent a car from Las Palmas and drive to the south, so maybe they consider taking a look at other spots as well!

16. Barranco de las Vacas

It’s a bit difficult to find as there aren’t good indications on Google and the names of the places around can be a bit tricky. When you finally find it, you realise it’s what you see in the picture and that’s it. So don’t expect a big valley like the Colorado Canyon. Good pic either!

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ???? ??????? (@yoan_alcrz)

17. Castillo del Romeral Natural Pools

I must admit I found these by chance. You don’t go to El Castillo del Romeral except you are going to El Castillo del Romeral for some reason. Cool natural pools to enjoy a different experience! But be careful: a windy day can spoil your stay. And it’s something relatively usual!

  • The 19 Most Beautiful Places In Gran Canaria

Get ready to spice up your travel game with a trip to Gran Canaria, where the cool spots just keep on coming!

From the sandy stretches of Maspalomas, where the dunes roll out like a desert mirage, to the epic views from Roque Nublo that’ll make your Instagram pop, this island is a non-stop adventure .

Dive into the vibrant streets of Las Palmas for a taste of city life, or chill out in the serene greenery of the north. And hey, don’t miss out on a dip in the hidden gem, Charco Azul, for that perfect holiday cooldown.

Gran Canaria’s got the goods to turn your holiday from great to “Can we just live here already?” So, pack your bags, bring your sense of wonder, and let’s get this island party started!

We spend a week on this beautiful island and by the end of it we really didn’t want to leave. The Canary Islands really are the epitome of eternal summer where even during the winter months you can experience temperatures of 30°C.

In this article I will highlight the most beautiful places in Gran Canaria and all the information you need to have an amazing time.

The 19 Most Beautiful Places In Gran Canaria

1. Dunas de Maspalomas

The dunes of Maspalomas in Gran Canaria are a spectacular natural attraction that feels like a mini-desert right next to the sea . Stretching out for kilometers, these golden sands offer a unique landscape that’s perfect for a leisurely walk or just to sit and watch the sunset.

The dunes change shape with the wind, so the scenery is always a bit different each time you visit. It’s a popular spot, but there’s plenty of space for everyone to find their own quiet corner.

Whether you’re into photography, nature, or just want to experience something a bit out of the ordinary, the Maspalomas dunes are definitely worth checking out.

The best place to take photos in the dunes of Maspalomas is right here .

Best time to visit – I highly recommend visiting for sunrise cause it was absolutely magical.

The 19 Most Beautiful Places In Gran Canaria

2. Mirador Astronómico de la Degollada de las Yeguas

This epic viewpoint in Gran Canaria is only 15 minutes driving from Maspalomas and the perfect spot to watch the sunrise over the island. It’s one of the most beautiful places in Gran Canaria and one where you can have the most epic views straight from the parking lot!

Located on the GC-60 road between Maspalomas and Tunte and granting a panoramic view over the 15km long Fataga ravine.

There’s plenty of parking space so even if you decide to visit during the day you won’t have any problems finding a parking spot.

The 19 Most Beautiful Places In Gran Canaria

3. Barranco de Las Vacas

The Barranco de Las Vacas is a hidden canyon in the South of Gran Canaria . Although these days it’s not very hidden anymore. During the day a lot of locals and tourists visit this short canyon and due to the very limited amount of parking space a visit can quickly become pretty hectic.

The hiking trail to the Barranco de las Vacas starts right next to the GC-550 and you can clearly see it if you put Google Maps into satellite mode. The trail goes down into the ravine at a steady incline but it’s a gravel path with some loose rocks here and there so make sure to wear good trainers or hiking boots.

At the turn off go to the right and go over the small stone wall using the stairs on the side of it. You’ll continue through the ravine a little more and go through a tunnel underneath the viaduct. After a short walk you’ll enter the canyon.

Parking Lot  – There are only 2 parking spaces next to the start of the hiking trail  right here . Don’t use the pin for Barranco de Las Vacas on Google Maps cause the start of trail is located on the other side of the road which I linked above. If that space is full there ‘s some more spots next tot the road  a little further down the road .

Best time visit  – Go as early as possible! We went before we had breakfast and arrived around 7.30am

The 19 Most Beautiful Places In Gran Canaria

4. Puerto de Mogán

Puerto de Mogán in Gran Canaria is the place to be if you’re into charming vibes and picturesque scenes.

Often dubbed “Little Venice” because of its cute canals, this spot blends beach life with a cozy village feel. You can stroll around the marina, check out the colorful buildings, or just kick back at a café and watch the world go by.

It’s also a top pick for seafood lovers , with plenty of fresh catches to choose from. Whether you’re looking to shop, sunbathe, or simply soak up the laid-back atmosphere, Puerto de Mogán has a little something for everyone.

The 19 Most Beautiful Places In Gran Canaria

5. Fuente de los Azulejos

Fuente de los Azulejos is a unique spot in Gran Canaria that’s all about nature’s own artistry. This place is where you’ll see the mountains showing off their stripes in shades of green, orange, and yellow, thanks to the minerals in the rocks .

It’s like the earth decided to paint a giant, colorful mural. You can catch this cool view while driving on the winding mountain roads, making the journey there as fun as the destination itself. It’s a bit off the usual tourist path , so it’s perfect if you’re looking to snap some unique photos or just enjoy a moment of natural beauty without the crowds.

💡 TIP – If you want to add a little more adventure to your holiday you should definitely add the Hiking Route 2 to Charco Azul to your list! This 7.2km loop gives you even more unique vantage points of these incredible mountains.

The 19 Most Beautiful Places In Gran Canaria

6. Mirador del Balcón

Mirador del Balcón is one of those spots in Gran Canaria where you can get a real ‘wow’ moment without much effort. Perched on the west coast, this viewpoint gives you front-row seats to some epic ocean views , with cliffs that dive straight into the sea.

It’s like standing on the edge of the world, especially at sunset when the sky puts on a show. There’s not much else around, making it a peaceful place to just chill and soak in the views. If you’re road-tripping around the island, this is a must-stop for a quick photo or a moment to just breathe in that fresh sea air.

The 19 Most Beautiful Places In Gran Canaria

7. Charco Azul

Charco Azul is a beautiful hidden gem in Gran Canaria that will lead you to a secret oasis in the heart of the Tamadaba Natural Park .

Tucked away in the island’s rugged terrain, this spot is all about the journey and the destination. The trail might challenge you a bit, but it’s totally worth it when you arrive at this stunning natural pool.

I had to open up my AllTrails app a couple of times cause the trails in Gran Canaria aren’t always well marked. But we managed to find the waterfall and its pool rather quickly. Although I would not advise you to go swimming. When we were there the water looked extremely dirty and since it’s a small pool it’s probably filled with bacteria.

The 19 Most Beautiful Places In Gran Canaria

8. Guayedra Beach

Guayedra Beach is a hidden gem in Gran Canaria that offers a bit of an adventure for those looking to stray from the beaten path. Nestled between rugged cliffs and blessed with dark, volcanic sand , this beach has a wild, untouched feel to it.

It’s not your typical tourist spot, which means you can often have a good chunk of it to yourself, especially on weekdays. The journey there is part of the fun, with a scenic hike that adds to the sense of discovery. Whether you’re up for a peaceful day lounging by the waves or keen on snapping some dramatic landscape photos, Guayedra Beach is a spot that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled upon a secret.

💡 TIP – Guayedra Beach is also a nudist beach so keep that in mind before going.

The 19 Most Beautiful Places In Gran Canaria

9. Mirador de Fataga

Mirador de Fataga in Gran Canaria is all about those big, wide views that make you stop and just go “wow.” Perched up high, this lookout spot gives you a panoramic peek at the valley below, with its patchwork of palm trees, quaint houses, and winding roads.

It’s a great pit stop if you’re exploring the island , offering a moment to stretch your legs and maybe snap a few pics. There’s something pretty relaxing about being up there, away from the hustle and bustle, just taking in the scenery. Plus, it’s easy to get to , making it a no-fuss addition to any day out in Gran Canaria.

The 19 Most Beautiful Places In Gran Canaria

10. Roque Nublo

Roque Nublo is one of those must-see spots in Gran Canaria that’s all about the dramatic landscapes. It’s this massive rock formation sticking out of the ground, kind of like nature’s own monument.

Getting up there involves a bit of a hike, but it’s totally doable and absolutely worth it for the views you get at the top. You’re basically up in the clouds, looking out over the island, and on clear days, you can even see the neighboring islands.

It’s a popular spot , so you might bump into fellow hikers, but there’s enough space for everyone to find their own little moment of awe. Whether you’re into photography, hiking, or just want to see something cool, Roque Nublo delivers.

Best time to visit  – Roque Nublo is one of the most famous hiking trails in Gran Canaria and while there is an actual parking lot it’s definitely not big enough for the amount of visitors during the day. We arrived around 10am and scored one of the last spots.

🎫 GO BY TOUR – From Palmas: Pico de las Nieves & Roque Nublo Full-Day Trip

The 19 Most Beautiful Places In Gran Canaria

Tejeda in Gran Canaria is a quaint little village that’s got a lot of charm packed into its narrow streets. Nestled right in the heart of the island , it’s surrounded by some pretty stunning nature, making it a great spot for anyone looking to explore the great outdoors or just enjoy some peace and quiet.

The village itself is pretty laid-back, with a few local shops and eateries where you can grab a bite and soak in the local vibe. It’s known for its almond trees , so if you’re around during the blooming season, you’re in for a treat.

Tejeda is also a stone’s throw away from some of the island’s top natural attractions, making it a perfect home base for adventurers.

The 19 Most Beautiful Places In Gran Canaria

12. Pico de las Nieves

Pico de las Nieves stands as Gran Canaria’s highest peak , offering a cool escape with some of the best views on the island. It’s the kind of place where you can see for miles on a clear day, with a panorama that stretches from the rugged inland mountains right out to the ocean.

The drive up is part of the adventure, winding through some scenic spots that are worth a pause. Once you’re at the top, there’s a sense of being on top of the world, making it a great spot for those who love to chase those high-up, expansive views.

It’s popular among both locals and visitors, so you might share the experience with a few others, but there’s plenty of space for everyone to find their own little spot to take it all in.

The 19 Most Beautiful Places In Gran Canaria

14. Caldera de Bandama

Caldera de Bandama is a massive volcanic crater that offers a unique outdoor experience in Gran Canaria. It’s pretty easy to get to and makes for a great half-day adventure.

You can walk around the rim for some fantastic views into the crater and across the island, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, there’s a trail that takes you right down to the bottom.

It’s a peaceful spot, especially early in the morning or later in the afternoon, and it gives you a break from the beach scene with a touch of nature’s drama. Whether you’re into hiking or just want to see something a bit different, Caldera de Bandama is definitely worth the trip.

The 19 Most Beautiful Places In Gran Canaria

15. El Bufadero

El Bufadero is a natural wonder on the coast of Gran Canaria that’s like nature’s own version of a water show. It’s basically a series of rock formations with holes that shoot water up into the air when the waves come crashing in, kind of like a geyser.

The best time to see it in action is when the tide is just right, so it’s a good idea to check the tide times before you go . It’s a cool spot for those who love to watch the power of the ocean and snap some unique photos. Just be sure to keep a safe distance, as those waves can be unpredictable.

El Bufadero adds a bit of thrill to the usual beach day, making it a fun detour for anyone exploring the island’s coastline.

HERE IS A SNEAK PEEK OF WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A TRIP TO GRAN CANARIA

WHAT TO DO IN GRAN CANARIA?

1. discover las palmas, the capital of gran canaria.

What to do in Gran Canaria

Yes we know, you probably don’t want to spend too much time in the city during your holidays. What you are looking for is the beach, the sun, and some adventures perhaps. However, we still highly recommend making a stop in Las Palmas during your visit to the Gran Canaria.

First of all, Las Palmas has a stunning beach called Las Canteras. There you can relax and sunbathe but it’s also a great spot for surfing! Indeed, most tourists come to Las Palmas to enjoy its beautiful beaches. Besides Las Canteras, you can also explore Las Alcaravaneras and San Cristobal. All are extremely beautiful.

However, what is most interesting in Las Palmas is the old town of Vegueta .

What to do in Gran Canaria

Vegueta is the historical district of Las Palmas . It is rich in historical monuments, museums, and the bright colors of traditional houses. Some of the highlights are the house-museum of Christopher Columbus, Plaza de Santa Ana, The Canarian Museum, The Gabinete Literario, Puerto de la Luz, and Calle Triana.

Near Las Palmas, you can also make a stop to the wonderful Jardin Botanico Viera y Clavijo.

2. Check out the impressive crater of Caldera de Bandama

What to do in Gran Canaria

After you are done exploring Las Palmas, head to the nearby volcano of Caldera de Bandama. From there you can see the staggering crater, reaching 1,000 meters in diameter and 200 meters deep. The best viewpoint is that Pico De Bandama, accessible by car ( here )

You can also reach the bottom of the crater in half an hour by foot through a path of volcanic rock. Remember to bring your hiking shoes though.

3. Visit the impressive Cathedral of Parroquia de San Juan Bautista de Arucas

What to do in Gran Canaria

Let’s continue to explore the area around Las Palmas . Less than 15min drive, and you will reach one of the most impressive monuments in Gran Canaria: Parroquia de San Juan Bautista de Arucas .

Arucas is about 18 km northwest of Las-Palmas, it is the third largest city in Gran Canaria. Surrounded by banana plantations as far as the eye can see, the economy of Arucas is mainly centered on the cultivation of vegetables and flowers.

Of course, the main reason to visit Arucas is its impressive cathedral. However, a walk through the old town is also very pleasant.

Location: here

4. Explore the charming town of Firgas

What to do in Gran Canaria

After your stop at Arucas, continue your journey to Firgas, one of the most charming villages in Gran Canaria.

Firgas became one of the best spots to visit in Gran Canaria thanks to its beautiful pedestrian walkways along a stepped waterfall. This famous roadside waterfall is lined with mosaics for even more charm. The place is called Paseo de Canaria ( location ).

You can also explore the rest of the village. You will find gorgeous churches, and traditional Canarian buildings and you can admire the gorgeous view all around you, as Firgas is located in the mountain. The main sights are all concentrated in the center of the town.

5. Continue your journey to our favorite village nestled in the mountain: Teror

What to do in Gran Canaria

Although the name “ Teror ” might sound scary, the village is one of the most charming in Gran Canaria.

Teror is located in the north of the island. The village is best known for her Virgin, enthroned at the Basilia Nuestra Señora del Pino. The Virgin was declared patroness of Gran Canaria and is honored every year on September 8 during a pilgrimage throughout the island.

Rich in history and culture, and beautiful in its typical and authentic architecture, Teror represents a great discovery in the Gran Canaria. Make sure to stop for a visit.

6. Next on your itinerary of Gran Canaria: Tejeda

What to do in Gran Canaria

Tejeda is a village located in the center of the island high in the mountain. The town offers an extraordinary panorama of the amazing landscape of Gran Canaria. From Tejeda you can admire the symbol of Gran Canaria: Roque de Nublo and Roque Bentayga. You can’t miss them. These two massive rocks stand out from the mountain like the protector of Gran Canaria. We will talk more about it later in this post.

In addition, Tejeda also represents traditional Canarian architecture. The town also has great restaurants. So if you are there during lunchtime, your timing would be perfect to take a break in one of the local restaurants.

We absolutely loved wandering through the town of Tejeda. Visiting this place is one of the highlights of Gran Canaria.

7. Check out Roque Nublo

What to do in Gran Canaria

In the center of the island, you will find the third highest peak on the island of Gran Canaria, but also the most symbolic one: Roque Nublo. This is a monolith measuring 80 meters high and located at 1,813 meters above sea level.

Overlooking Tejeda , it provides a splendid 360° view of the lunar and desert landscape surrounding the massif: a unique and exceptional excursion!

To get there, simply park your car at the free parking and hike for about 3km to reach Roque Nublo.

8. ROQUE BENTAYGA, ANOTHER FAMOUS SPOT IN GRAN CANARIA

What to do in Gran Canaria

This mountain is one of the most popular places for tourists visiting Gran Canaria. You can explore the beautiful surroundings and make a stop by the Bentayga Visitor Center where you can learn about the history of this area and its inhabitants.

The hike to the rock is not very difficult, but you will need good hiking shoes.

Location:  here

9. PICO DE LAS NIEVES, THE HIGHEST PEAK IN GRAN CANARIA

What to do in Gran Canaria

After having reached Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga, next on your list is Pico de las Nieves. Another awesome thing to do in Gran Canaria. Pico de las Nieves is the highest point of the island with 1,949 meters above sea level . Pico de las Nieves means the Peak of snow.

We were totally unprepared for this visit. As the temperature at sea level was more than 20 degrees Celsius, we didn’t expect to encounter such cold temperatures at the top. But indeed, it was about 5 degrees Celcius when we reached the top…

We only stepped outside for a bit, with our shirt and light hoodie, and quickly ran back in our car. It was anyway a bit cloudy and we couldn’t see much of the view…

The good thing, however, is that to reach the top you can drive your car all the way to the free parking. From there, just take a few steps towards the peak.

Don’t be surprised if you are at the beach in the morning, but wear gloves and a hat in the afternoon at Pico de Las Nieves.

10. Next, let’s head east to the incredible Guayadeque Ravine

What to do in Gran Canaria

We told you that the landscapes of Gran Canaria were very diverse. After seeing charming villages, the beach at Las Palmas, the mountains of Roque Nublo, Roque Bentayga and Pico de Las Nieves, it is time to visit a Canyon. Indeed, a Canyon! And there are more than 1 on the island…

Guayadeque is a hidden gem in Gran Canaria. This extended 15-kilometer-long canyon is located on the east side of the island. This place fascinated us with its wild landscape covered with native vegetation.

Driving through Guayadeque is one of our best memories of our trip to Gran Canaria.

There you can also see the famous houses carved inside the mountain. Some of the restaurants have been established inside some natural caves, keeping it cool even in the hot summer days.

Many natural caves have also been converted into private accommodation.

What to do in Gran Canaria

At the beginning of the ravine, you will find the Guayadeque Visitor Center, which explains the customs of the Canarian aborigines who inhabited the ravine. The road to the Canyon goes up to a hermitage and several restaurants.

At the end of the road, there is a seven-kilometer trail that leads to the volcanic caldera of Los Marteles.

Guayadeque Ravine is one of the best things to see in Gran Canaria.

11. On your way back stop at Agüimes

What to do in Gran Canaria

The town of Agüimes is one of the most emblematic places to see in Gran Canaria. Located near Guayadeque, you can combine the visit of the Canyon with Agüimes. The historical district with its stunning main square, the arts and crafts shops, delicious restaurants, and traditional events, is a must-see in Gran Canaria.

Agüimes was one of the first settlements after the conquest of the island by the Spaniards in 1491. Make sure to check out the Church of San Sebastian which stands out in the town. You can’t miss it.

However, what we liked the most in Agüimes, were the many sculptures displayed around the town. Our favorite one is the camel looking at the church in a very small alley.

12. VENTURE YOURSELF IN BARRANCO DE LAS VACAS

For some reason, you will not find this place in most guidebooks. We are not sure why, as truly this place is incredible. If you’ve ever been to Antelope Canyon in Utah, this place definitely feels the same.

This canyon, sculpted in the rock over thousands of years by a torrent, is spectacular. It is only about fifty meters long but it is a magical place that is worth the trip.

The site is located near Agüimes . So you can combine Guayadeque, Agüimes and Barranco de las Vacas in a day. The location is not easy to find. There is absolutely no sign and no real trail to get there. We followed Google Maps and saw a few cars parked on the side of a tiny road. We then concluded that it must be here.

If you drive there, look for a stone bridge. There is a tiny spot to park 1 or 2 cars just before the bridge. From there, you will have to step over the safety rail, behind which a fairly steep path descends to the ravine.

Go through the tunnel under the bridge and you have arrived.

Walk through the majestic canyon till the end and enjoy the many photo opportunities along the way. The best spot to take photos is at the very end of the Canyon.

13. HEAD SOUTH TO SEE THE DUNES OF MASPALOMAS

What to do in Gran Canaria

Visiting the Dunes of Maspalomas is certainly the unmissable thing to do in Gran Canaria. For us, we were completely awestruck when we first visited Maspalomas ! For miles away, you can only see sand. It definitely felt like we were in the Sahara.

There is a nice promenade which go through the dunes. It starts at the famous lighthouse called Faro de Maspalomas ( location ).

Some of the highest dunes are over ten meters high and they spread over more than 400 hectares. They are bordered by a large beach of fine sand. We actually really liked the wide beach in Maspalomas . You can easily spend a day there.

You may also fancy a camel ride while in Maspalomas as it feels like you are in the Sahara. Book here .

14. RELAX (OR PARTY) AT PLAYA DEL INGLÉS

What to do in Gran Canaria

You start to become a bit tired of all these excursions, we know… Well, a holiday is also there to simply enjoy a day at the beach or party all night long. This is why Playa del Inglés is here.

It is often said that the Canary Islands attract mostly retirees… Well, one thing is for sure, you will not find them in Playa del Inglés. This seaside town on the east coast near Maspalomas is where you can party by the ocean, with luxury hotels, bars, restaurants, and countless nightclubs. And if you have a little energy left the next day, try one of the many water sports in offer: surfing, paddle, jet ski or even scuba diving…

15. CONTINUE YOUR WAY SOUTH TO PLAYA AMADORES

What to do in Gran Canaria

Playa de Amadores is a sublime beach of white sand with clear and turquoise water. The beach is obviously popular for sunbathing and swimming. Protected by two breakwaters, the sea is calm in Playa de Amadores.

This is one of the best beaches if you want to swim safely or if you are visiting Gran Canaria with kids.

Many hotels are located near Playa de Amadores, if you want to make it your base in Gran Canaria.

16. PUERTO DE MOGÁN, OUR FAVORITE PLACE IN GRAN CANARIA

A street in Puerto de Mogán, Gran Canaria

Visiting Gran Canaria without going to Puerto de Mogán would be a real pity… Trust us on this one. YOU MUST VISIT PUERTO DE MOGÁN ! This place is even nicknamed “the little Venice of Gran Canaria”.

And yes, between the small fishing port, the bridges and footbridges, the marina with its yachts, and the seaside town does feel like being in Venice or on the Mediterranean Côte d’Azur.

Puerto de Mogan

In terms of activities, there are loads to do in Puerto de Mogán . First, you can start with a boat trip to spot dolphins but also to admire the beautiful coastline of Gran Canaria. Book here , as this activity is usually one of the most popular in this town.

However, you can also go kayaking/snorkeling, go on a hike, shopping, and simply take a nice stroll through the harbor and eat local delicacies at one of the many restaurants.

Visiting Puerto de Mogán was our most memorable excursion in Gran Canaria. We highly recommend that you spare at least half-day to visit it.

17. Barranco de Fataga, another highlight in Gran Canaria

Barranco de Fataga

Barranco de Fataga is a deep canyon in the center of the island. Head to the Mirador Astronómico de la Degollada de las Yeguas, a viewpoint from which you can admire the beauty of the canyon.

No need to hike to get there, you can easily access it by car. However, if you like hiking, Barranco de Fataga is one of the best spot in Gran Canaria as you hike in the middle of the Canyon with truly impressive landscape around you.

You do not need to visit the Gran Canyon in the US, you have Barranco de Fataga in the Gran Canaria!

18. FATAGA VILLAGE, A MUST IN GRAN CANARIA

2021-Fataga

Fataga is another charming village nestled in the mountains. This is also one of the best things to visit in Gran Canaria. It is even ranked as one of the most beautiful villages in Gran Canaria.

Perched on a steep rocky outcrop in the middle of a palm grove, the village has retained its soul and attracts many artists, somewhat rehabilitating the village.

A true gem in Gran Canaria.

19. GO WEST TO VISIT AGAETE AND ITS BEAUTIFUL COASTLIN E

Coastline in Canary Islands

Agaete is, without a doubt, one of the best places to enjoy an iconic sunset. The view of the beautiful blue ocean and the majestic cliffs in the background is stunning!

You can also check out the natural swimming pools which are protected from the sea by unique concrete pylons, creating a tranquil space where you can bathe with the family. These pools are connected by volcanic tubes and offer great views of the northwest coast of the island.

We also enjoyed wandering through the fishing village of Agaete . We ate there some of our best (and cheapest) grilled fish in Gran Canaria. There are many local restaurants facing the pebble beach.

Is it also from Agaete that we took the ferry to reach Tenerife . You can book all your ferry rides in the Canary Islands via Direct Ferry here .

20. CHECK OUT THE CAVES OF VALERON

Cenobio de Valeron (The Caves of Valeron), Santa Maria de Guia, Gran Canaria

To the north of Gran Canaria is one of the most spectacular archaeological sites in the Canary Islands : the monastery of Valerón. It is a huge collective natural granary that the ancient Canarians set up to store cereals. Valerón is made up of more than 300 silos carved into soft rock, connected to each other at different levels. This prehistoric civil engineering work is worth visiting for its heritage and cultural value.

Now the site has been adapted for visits. It is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday.

This place is really unique and worth the drive all the way north to Gran Canaria.

BEST ACTIVITIES IN GRAN CANARIA

Surfing in Canary Islands

Gran Canaria is not as well known as Fuerteventura or Tenerife for surfing, but the island has some great spots nevertheless. In fact one of the best surfing spots in Gran Canaria, is right in its capital, Las Palmas. La Cicer is a perfect place to learn how to surf. A little further on the edge of Las Palmas, you also have El Confital, where it’s quite common to even find barrels. Surf competitions are often held in this spot.

In the south of the island, Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas are also 2 great spots, but mostly for beginners.

Diving in Canary Islands

With good weather all year round, 300 days of sunshine and little rain, there is no specific diving season in Gran Canaria. Whether you stay in summer or winter, you can join a diving trip. With visibility of around 30 meters at most dive sites in Gran Canaria, there are plenty of beautiful fishes to see underwater.

Several dive operators are based near Puerto de Mogan , offering a range of diving courses and diving trips. Pasito Blanco is an ideal site for divers, with rock ledges around a plateau that is home to plenty of sea life. As the water is cooler in winter, a 5-millimeter wetsuit is recommended.

Kayaking in Canary Islands

A good way to discover the beautiful coast of Gran Canaria, is by kayak. The south of the island is most popular for kayaking, thanks to the abundance of coves and caves around the coast of Puerto de Mogán and Maspalomas . The rocky shores offer a unique perspective that will make your excursion unforgettable.

Some tours allow snorkeling or swimming in secluded coves or inside caves (tide permitting). Others include free time on a beach to sunbathe and relax before returning to the boat.

Where to stay in Gran Canaria?

Gran Canaria is probably the Island in the Canaries that offers the greatest variety of landscapes and reliefs. You can enjoy the beach, the dunes, the mountains, discover volcanoes and other unique natural landscapes, visit historical and cultural sites, and practice a large number of activities. The best place to stay will therefore depend on what you want to do during your stay in Gran Canaria.

Having said that, the island of Gran Canaria is in a perfect round shape. To go from North to South or East to West, it wouldn’t take you more than 1 hour by car.

Here is our favorite places to stay in Gran Canaria:

1. Puerto de Mogán

Hotel in Puerto de Mogan

When visiting Gran Canaria for over a month, we completely fell in love with Puerto de Mogán . For us it is the best place to visit on the island but also one of the best places to stay during your trip.

Puerto de Mogán, with its soothing atmosphere and its small white houses wedged between the sea and the cliffs behind, is just stunning. The beach at Puerto de Mogán is also very pleasant. As it is located in the south, it gets more sunny days than the rest of the island. From there, you can easily reach Maspalomas , Playa del Inglés, Fataga and even Pico de las Nieves.

At Puerto de Mogán, our favorite hotel by far is Cordial Muelle Viejo . This brand new hotel is directly facing the sea and is located next to the beach right beside a cliff. We highly recommend this place for a perfect holiday in Gran Canaria. Check it out here .

2. Las Palmas

Hotel in Las Palmas

Las Palmas is a place that is central to the historical and contemporary culture of the Canary Islands. In the city, you can discover a surprisingly rich historical heritage, especially in the district of Vegueta, a colonial district that houses the Cathedral of Saint Anne and the House of Christopher Columbus.

The most important museums of the island are also located here, such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Museo Canario, which exhibits numerous remains of the Guanches, the first inhabitants of the archipelago.

During the first half of our trip to Gran Canaria, we decided to stay in Las Palmas. As you may already know, we always look for places where we can surf nearby. Las Palmas has 2 of the best surfing spots in Gran Canaria, which was perfect for us.

We rented a car in Las Palmas, and it was perfect to drive around the island and explore many places. So if you want something convenient during your stay in Gran Canaria, Las Palmas can be a great place to stay.

In Las Palmas, we stayed in a brand new hotel called ART LAS PALMAS MUR HOTEL . We totally loved it. It has such great value for money and is located close to the main beach of Las Palmas. You can book here .

Another beautiful hotel in Las Palmas, probably the most charming one, is Santa Catalina, a Royal Hideaway Hotel . This luxury hotel is located near the harbor of Las Palmas in the historical center of the city. The rooftop pool is breathtaking. If your budget allows it, then don’t hesitate, this is one of the best places in Las Palmas. Book here .

3. Maspalomas

Hotel in Maspalomas

Maspalomas is the most important seaside resort in Gran Canaria. It is located at the extreme south of the island. If you want to enjoy the sea above all and want to spend your holidays in a lively place with a very festive atmosphere, then Maspalomas is probably the right place to stay.

One of the major attractions of this seaside resort is Playa del Inglès, the largest beach on the island.

The offer in terms of accommodations in Maspalomas is quite substantial. You can easily find hotels of all types.

In Maspalomas we recommend Hotel Riu Palace Meloneras . In fact, many hotels are located behind the dunes. So accessing the beach requires a long walk in the hot desert until you can finally reach the sea.

However, Hotel Riu Palace Meloneras , is located on the side of the dunes, directly facing the sea. And right behind the hotel, you will find many restaurants and a shopping center. Without a doubt, Hotel Riu Palace Meloneras is one of the best places to stay in Maspalomas. Book here .

How to get to Gran Canaria?

What to do in Gran Canaria

The easiest way is by plane! Plane tickets between the island and the major cities in Europe are generally very affordable. Easyjet has many great offers, however, book early as during peak seasons the prices are going much higher.

If you are visiting multiple Canary Islands, then you can easily take the ferry between each of them. We started our journey in Lanzarote , we then took a ferry to Fuerteventura , and after staying a few weeks there, we took another ferry to Gran Canaria. We always use Direct Ferry to book our rides in the Canary Islands ( book here ). They have the newest ferries compared to other companies.

Once you reach the Canary Islands, it is highly recommended to rent a car . To get the cheaper rate we used Rentalcars.com . Check it out here for the best deals.

Eerily beautiful lava-sculpted mountains, rippling sugar-white and bare black-rock beaches, distant villages teetering atop ridges, tumbling pine forests full of churning mists and exhilarating hikes, and plenty of sun-toasted resorts – Spain’s far-flung Canary Islands are deservedly one of Europe’s most popular destinations.

Many travelers become so enamoured with the Canary Islands that they return year after year, often exploring a different island every trip. But where to start? While the eight Canary Islands make up the archipelago west of Morocco’s Atlantic coast, each island has its own distinct charm, character and appeal. No matter your travel style, here’s a guide to finding the Canary Island that's best for you.

Parts of Spain now require a health pass from visitors to enter indoor spaces

Sand-colored rock formations jut into the sky with the volcanic cone of El Teide in the background at Teide National Park, Tenerife

Best island for mountains, hiking and food

Beyond the British-geared tourist resorts sprinkled across the island’s south, Spain’s formidable tallest peak – snow-dusted 12,523ft-high El Teide – puts age-old favorite  Tenerife on almost every las Canarias itinerary. Combined with the surreal Unesco-listed 73-sq-mile Parque Nacional del Teide, this impossibly spectacular volcanic moonscape serves up some of the most exciting hiking in all of Spain. Only 200 walkers a day can tackle the five-hour ascent to the summit: book ahead online . Across the island, other jaw-droppingly beautiful walks lead past charismatic villages, through perfumed Canarian pine woods or down plunging valleys such as the 4-mile (6.5km) Barranco del Infierno .

And then there’s the blossoming, ever-more sophisticated local food scene. Tenerife is the only Canary island blessed with Michelin stars – six at last count, with temples to haute cuisine running from Martín Berasategui’s two-star, Basque-inspired  M.B to the Padrón brothers’ seafood sensation  El Rincón de Juan Carlos .

Where to stay on Tenerife

Finding a room is generally not a problem in Santa Cruz and in the north of the island (apart from at Carnaval time), but the same cannot be said for the southern resorts, particularly around Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas; book in advance when possible. Hotel Alhambra  in La Orotava sleeps guests in an art-packed 18th-century manor.

Where to eat on Tenerife

Visitors can ditch the resort buffets in favor of more appealing and imaginative dishes, ranging from traditional Canarian cuisine, typified by robust homestyle cooking, right through to the tantalizing haute cuisine of gastro temples, where innovative chefs serve some fabulously novel fusion combinations. Tenerife's capital city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife hosts an array of outstanding restaurants. Try Guannabi  for creatively executed Mediterranean-fusion dishes in a delightfully converted Canarian house.

How to get to Tenerife

Two airports serve Tenerife: Tenerife Sur Airport handles international flights, while almost all inter-island flights (plus a few international and mainland services) use the older and smaller Tenerife Norte Airport. Ferries also travel to Tenerife from the other Canary islands, but flying is the fastest way to travel between the islands, and prices are very competitive.

Looking over a palm-tree-lined square surrounded by colorful flat-roofed buildings in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

Gran Canaria

Best island for mountains, history and food.

The most populous among the islands, often-maligned  Gran Canaria proves as inspiringly diverse as the Canaries’ deliciously varied cuisine. Swirls of mist-cloaked mountains give way to desert-like fields and lush laurel and pine forests (and, yes, a few packed-out tourist resorts), while intriguing pre-Hispanic sights like Gáldar’s  Cueva Pintada conjure a picture of the archipelago’s original inhabitants, the Guanches. Explore further on a twists-and-turns road trip through the island’s high-altitude center, whose beauty and drama peak at top-of-the-world cave-village Artenara, before stocking up on creamy queso de flor (flower cheese) and other local goodies at a farmers’ market. Soak up the distinctive Canarian architecture in soulful capital of  Las Palmas de Gran Canaria , Spain’s ninth-largest city.

Where to stay on Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria arguably has the best range of accommodations in the Canaries, depending on whether you want to wake up to sounds of birdsong, the surf or surrounded by the vigor and excitement of a Spanish-mainland-style city. The bright, colorful and welcoming La Ventana Azul hostel is spectacularly located right on the beachfront and has a rooftop terrace and free snorkel rental.

Where to eat on Gran Canaria

The breathtaking topographic disparities and climatic variations, including contrasting humid trade winds and dry desert-air currents, all help to generate a diverse patchwork of agricultural produce. Along with the aquacultural goods on offer, Gran Canaria's pantry is rich and bountiful. Add to that the farmers' markets and fish markets and you will discover a tempting abundance of food choice. You'll find outstanding "eco-fusion" cuisine at  Llévame al Huerto .

How to get to Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria Airport has direct flights to destinations throughout Europe, as well as all of the Canary Islands. Two passenger harbors on Gran Canaria offer inter-island ferries.

A black-sand beach with vivid red rocks in Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Best island for landscapes, art and architecture

An entrancing world of brooding volcanic cones, glinting black-pebble beaches, thundering Atlantic surf and the odd palm-spangled valley,  Lanzarote feels like a giant color-shifting natural canvas. So it’s no surprise that the island is tightly tied to 20th-century artist and environmental campaigner César Manrique, whose impossible-to-miss influence you’ll uncover around every corner – from the whitewashed, sky-blue-windowed homes of mellow coastal villages like La Caleta de Famara, Arrieta and El Golfo to the inimitable lava-field house at the  Fundación César Manrique . At the heart of it all lies the 20-sq-mile Parque Nacional de Timanfaya. Savor this otherworldly volcanic landscape by scrambling up the sprawling  Caldera Blanca on a 5.5-mile (9km) hike at the park’s edge.

Where to stay on Lanzarote

Much of Lanzarote’s accommodations are in self-catering apartments, private villas and sprawling resorts, which you'll find in Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca. That said, there's a growing number of wonderful independent hotels dotted around, especially in the island's wine-growing region and northern reaches – and places like these play a key role in giving travelers an insight into the fascinating Lanzarote that lies beyond its beach resorts. Artfully reimagined bodega  Buenavista Lanzarote offers five eco-conscious "country suites" amid volcanic vineyards.

Where to eat on Lanzarote

Canarian cuisine stands strong on Lanzarote, but with its own delicious twists, including local goat's cheese, roasted meats and three styles of the much-loved mojo  (spicy sauce made from coriander, basil or red chili peppers). There are wonderful restaurants all over the island (both local-style and creatively international), with the best food found well beyond the resorts. Canarian-international  La Cantina is a beloved dining spot in delightful Teguise.

How to get to Lanzarote

Aeropuerto César Manrique–Lanzarote has an array of flights to and from Europe, as well as Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma. Other Canary islands are accessible with stopovers in Gran Canaria and Tenerife. From Arrecife's Puerto de los Mármoles, ferries connect with Gran Canaria and on to Tenerife and La Palma. From Playa Blanca, there are regular ferries to Corralejo on Fuerteventura.

A golden stretch of sand is lapped on either side by azure water on Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

Fuerteventura

Best island for beaches and water sports.

A Unesco Biosphere Reserve since 2009, the second-largest Canary island (after Tenerife) lures visitors with its dazzling beaches, year-round sunny climate and raw lunar-like beauty. Wind-lashed and evocatively arid,  Fuerteventura is graced by the archipelago’s dreamiest sands: the honey-colored dunes of the protected  Parque Natural de Corralejo , surf-mad  El Cotillo (originally a fishing village) and blissfully undeveloped pale-gold  Playa de Cofete on the island’s southern tip. You can go surfing, sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and diving (even freediving), and venture out on some excellent hikes, including around the Isla de Lobos nature reserve.

Where to stay on Fuerteventura

Corralejo and Morro Jable have the most beds, although casas rurales (village or farmstead accommodations) are increasingly sprouting up in the rural interior. Chic minimalist  Avanti makes a stylish adults-only base in Corralejo.

Where to eat on Fuerteventura

More than any other Canary island, Fuerteventura’s traditional cuisine is simple and essentially the result of poverty, but is today marked by the quality and freshness of its ingredients.  Restaurante Avenida rustles up classic Canarian cuisine.

How to get to Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura airport has direct flights to Gran Canaria and Tenerife, from where you can fly on to the other islands. Ferries depart for Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

A woman walks along a mountaintop dirt path on La Palma, Canary Islands

Best island for nature and hiking

It’s impossible not to fall for gorgeously green, refreshingly under-touristed  La Palma , with its hushed pine groves, steep rainforested hills and architecturally rich capital  Santa Cruz de la Palma , filled with graceful 16th-century mansions. Around 528 miles (850km) of walking routes meander across the island, the most thrilling of them centered on the unmissable 18-sq-mile Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente, whose 5-mile-wide depression was created by a volcano collapsing in on itself.  The 7-mile (11.4km) round-trip climb to the 6082ft-high summit of Pico de Bejenado is a view-laden showstopper of scattered pines, sharp ridges and mysterious petroglyphs.

Where to stay on La Palma

La Palma has an appealing choice of accommodations suiting all tastes but without the bloated beach resorts on other islands. If you want to live more like a local or in a rural villa with a swimming pool, choose one of the casas rurales for rent across the island. Beamed ceilings set the boutiquey scene at Santa Cruz’ intimate  Hotel San Telmo .

Where to eat on La Palma

The diverse landscapes of "La Isla Bonita" are set to an equally varied and mouthwatering culinary backdrop. Santa Cruz de la Palma offers a tempting range of international and local cuisine, rounded off by a superb cafe or two. Elsewhere, the island is speckled with culinary choice, from handsomely located tapas restaurants in El Paso to select Canarian in the volcanic south or excellent seafood restaurants overlooking dazzling views of the sapphire sea. Book ahead to sample the fresh-produce cooking at locally loved restaurant  Enriclai .

How to get to La Palma

La Palma’s airport keeps the island well connected to the rest of the archipelago, with several flights daily to Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and occasional direct flights to some of the other islands. There are flights to La Palma from European destinations such as London, Manchester, Frankfurt, Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam, Brussels and Barcelona. Ferries head to Tenerife, La Gomera and Gran Canaria.

A lush green valley flanked by imposing mountains on La Gomera, Canary Islands

Best island for hiking

Cascading down thickly forested hillsides and precipitous valleys from the wind-battered 4878ft-high Alto de Garajonay, bohemian  La Gomera is a hiker’s dream. The fairytale-like 15-sq-mile Parque Nacional de Garajonay at the heart of the island bursts with trails tracking through misty ancestral laurisilva forest (try the 6.5-mile downhill  Alto–Hermigua hike ), while elsewhere, thrilling paths cling to sheer valley walls or meander along the blackened volcanic coastline. When you’re all hiked out, stroll the pastel-painted streets of sea-hugging capital  San Sebastián de la Gomera and dig into hearty local specialities like potaje de berros (watercress stew), miel de palma  (palm honey) or fresh goat’s cheese.

Where to stay on La Gomera

The island has, so far, kept grand-scale tourism at bay, and most lodging is in small rural hotels, family-run pensiones, refurbished farmhouses and self-catering apartments. There are also plenty of appealing casas rurales , many of which were abandoned by emigrants and have since been refurbished for tourists. La Gomera's top hotel is the  Parador de la Gomera , in the style of a 15th-century Canarian mansion.

Where to eat on La Gomera

La Gomera's cuisine is classic, simple Canarian, starring fresh seafood, meaty mains, hearty stews such as potaje de berros (watercress stew) and, of course, patatas arrugadas (wrinkly potatoes) with lashings of mojo . The island's international community has introduced a few other flavors too, especially in Valle Gran Rey, which hosts some good fusion and vegetarian restaurants alongside its traditional offerings. Don’t miss the outstanding home cooking at much-loved restaurant  Casa Efigenia .

How to get to La Gomera

Aeropuerto de La Gomera has several daily flights to Tenerife. Ferries from Tenerife and La Palma arrive into San Sebastián’s busy port. The vast majority of people arrive here on day trips from Los Cristianos, Tenerife.

Bathers in Charco Azul, a natural volcanic pool in El Hierro, Canary Islands

Best island for diving, hiking and escaping it all

Those who make it as far as the Canaries’ westernmost island quickly realize they’re onto something special. Ringed by glittering natural pools and impenetrable volcanic cliffs,  El Hierro has been a protected Unesco Geopark since 2014, and plans are under way to transform it into the world’s first energy-self-sufficient island. Here, on what feels like the edge of the earth, quiet hiking trails such as the historic 16-mile (27km)  Camino de la Virgen weave through flower-filled fields and scented pine forests. Other paths, like the spine-tingling 2.7-mile (4.4km)  Camino de Jinama , traverse sheer cliff faces above lava-hewn landscapes. Meanwhile, the warm, glass-clear Atlantic waters off El Hierro’s craggy coastline unveil the finest diving in the Canaries, especially around the tranquil Mar de las Calmas near sunny La Restinga in the south.

Where to stay on El Hierro

El Hierro's accommodation scene isn't the most exciting in the Canary Islands, but you aren't here for flashy resorts. The best places to stay are charming rural hotels and private casas rurales , and there are plenty of budget-friendly self-catering apartments across the island. Stay at boho-rustic converted bodega  El Sitio , which hosts yoga retreats.

Where to eat on El Hierro

Food on El Hierro might be unpretentious, but it's delicious, much of it produced on the island or off its coasts. The lack of tourist traffic ensures restaurants are catering mainly to a local clientele, which means higher standards. Dine at the elegant  Restaurante Mirador de la Peña , designed by César Manrique.

How to get to El Hierro

El Hierro's tiny airport has just a few flights to Tenerife and Gran Canaria, where you can take onward transport to the rest of the archipelago. Naviera Armas has one daily sailing Sunday to Friday between El Hierro's Puerto de la Estaca and Tenerife's Los Cristianos.

Caleta del Sebo village on La Graciosa, Canary Islands

La Graciosa

Best island for beaches and going back to basics.

Named the eighth Canary Island in 2018, serene sand-swept La Graciosa lies just a half-hour boat ride north of Lanzarote. On this low-lying beauty of an island, wild honey-gold beaches wrap around scorched volcanic cones, and the only way to explore is on foot, by bicycle or by rented jeep. Most visitors arrive on day trips from Órzola on Lanzarote, but if you stay a few nights on La Graciosa, you’ll feel worlds away from the Canary Islands’ buzz. Hike or bike over to remote  Playa de las Conchas or secluded  Playa Francesa  before settling in for a seafood feast in low-key "capital" Caleta de Sebo.

Where to stay on Isla Graciosa

Accommodations on Isla Graciosa are mostly in simple, comfortable pensiones or private apartments.  Pensión Enriqueta has great-value, no-fuss rooms and a lively restaurant in Caleta de Sebo.

Where to eat on Isla Graciosa

You'll enjoy excellent fresh seafood at most of Caleta de Sebo's mellow restaurants, including  Casa Margucha and  El Veril .

How to get to Isla Graciosa

Biosfera Express and Líneas Romero run ferries between Órzola and Caleta de Sebo.

ESSENTIAL NATURAL AREAS

The variety of natural places in Gran Canaria means that within a small area you will find geographical landmarks as varied as a large rock formation, dunes that resemble a desert, a crater and cliffs. Exploring the island is like taking an island geography and history lesson round every corner. Some of the must-visit places related to nature that you cannot miss in Gran Canaria include the following.

Roque Nublo, a place of worship

Roque Nublo is Gran Canaria’s most recognisable rock formation. Standing at a height of 80 metres and rising 1,813 metres above sea level, the rock was formed by one of the volcanic eruptions that forged the archipelago millions of years ago. The most unusual thing about Roque Nublo is its link to a sacred place of worship for ancient indigenous people. The rock is one of the island’s must-visit places.

If you don’t have a photo of Maspalomas dunes , you haven’t been to Gran Canaria. This miniature Sahara desert is one of the most striking landscapes that must be visited on the island. Walk through the dunes, enjoy the panoramic views and round things up with a swim in the blue waters of the Atlantic.

Tamadaba Natural Park is a natural area that extends from the interior of Gran Canaria all the way to the ocean, featuring a Canary Island pine forest, sea cliffs and ravines. Explore this park spanning 7,500 hectares along one of its trails and don’t miss the beauty that unfolds before visitors at observatories such as the Balcón viewpoint .

Guayadeque Ravine Natural Monument

The Guayadeque ravine is not one of the best known places in Gran Canaria but nevertheless comes highly recommended. This ravine with steep slopes winds its way from the interior to the coastline for 15 kilometres. Along the way you will discover part of Gran Canaria’s indigenous past, cave houses, endemic vegetation (over 80 native species) and even hotels and restaurants.

It also boasts dozens of hiking routes that allow you to discover its most hidden secrets, so put on your hiking boots and get walking!

barranco guayadeque

Situated on Gallego mountain, over 300 different-sized cavities form Cenobio de Valerón , which was created by Canarian indigenous people to store their harvests, protecting them from animals, storms and the light-fingered. The site was declared a Cultural Interest Site in 1974 and is one of the most unusual places that you cannot miss in the Canary Islands.

The Bandama caldera is one of the most astonishing and unusual places on the planet, formed after an eruption and the subsequent collapse of a volcano over its magma chamber. In 1994 the area was given protected status as a National Monument. The large crater is practically circular in shape with a circumference measuring three kilometres and a depth of 200 metres. We recommend climbing up to the caldera’s highest point, Bandama, as the views from up high are stunning.

Incidentally, its name comes from Daniel Van Damme, the Belgian who purchased the caldera in order to plant vineyards.

Gáldar Painted Cave: testimony to indigenous peoples

The  Gáldar Painted Cave is one of Gran Canaria’s archaeological jewels and living testimony to the indigenous people’s use of caves and lava tubes. Some 60 dwellings have been found in the acropolis of Gáldar, which could have housed over 200 people, in addition to other cavities that were used as burial chambers and meeting places. In the case of the Painted Cave, discovered in the nineteenth century, corpses and household items were found inside it. After large-scale adjustments, the Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park was set up. Guided tours are now available.

VISIT THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TOWNS AND VILLAGES IN GRAN CANARIA

In Gran Canaria cities sit alongside towns and villages with different characteristics depending on their location. Explore the capital and lose yourself in the most beautiful towns and villages in the interior or on the coast, which are sometimes situated in unlikely places where many foreigners decide to stay for good.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: the island’s proud capital

The capital,  Las Palmas de Gran Canaria , proudly lays claim to being the most cosmopolitan place on the island, a dynamic city where you can enjoy picturesque spots, excellent restaurants and beautiful beaches.

Some must-visit places in Las Palmas include La Luz castle , the Holy Cathedral-Basilica of Santa Ana (known as the cathedral of the Canary Islands) and Vegueta market. Culture lovers should make note of the Casa de Colón , an institution where the history of the Canary Islands and its relationship with the Discovery is studied, as well as the Alfredo Kraus auditorium, a modern venue that hosts major international events.

Time should also be set aside for some shopping on Calle Mayor de Triana , which is not only a shopping street but also a charming thoroughfare, and a visit to Las Canteras beach , the most important urban beach in the Canary Islands.

las palmas de gran canaria

Just 20 kilometres from the capital is Teror , a town devoted to the Virgen de los Pinos (Virgin of the Pines), which receives thousands of pilgrims each year. Walking along its streets lined with colourful houses with pretty wooden balconies dating from the fifteenth-century is a true delight for visitors. If you are familiar with its name, you shouldn’t be surprised, as its reputation precedes it due to the bottled water Aguas de Teror.

Visits to town to discover the basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pino, the Cistercian monastery, the Episcopal palace and its squares and fountains should be combined with an excursion to Doramas Natural Park , which features the impressive Azuaje and Moya ravines.

And don’t forget that if your visit falls on a Sunday, a market takes place in the morning, where you can pick up handicrafts and fresh local produce.

Agaete, a picturesque town

The charm of the town of Agaete , just 30 kilometres from Las Palmas, lies not only in its historical quarter made up of white houses, or in its interesting past, traces of which can be seen in Maipés cemetery, but also in the welcoming locals, who always offer friendly conversation and a smile to visitors.

On a stroll through Agaete you can discover places such as La Concepción church, the La Rama Ethnographic Museum, and the charming Huerto de las Flores garden. But we also recommend leaving the town centre for a swim in the natural pools of Salinas de Agaete , which even has a bar and a wide range of facilities.

Arguineguín, the loveliest town

This traditional fishing town, which belongs to the municipality of Mogán, is situated in the south of Gran Canaria .  Arguineguín , regarded as one of the loveliest towns on the island, offers travellers a complete experience with a charming historical quarter, a port where you can watch seafarers or take a boat trip, a colourful market and beautiful beaches.

Although it is hard to fit in everything on a day trip, be sure to set aside time to sample the traditional cuisine served in its restaurants.

Puerto de Mogán, the most photogenic

Puerto de Mogán  is situated in the municipality of Mogán and somewhere your camera will not be able to resist. The old white fisherman houses covered in bougainvillea, the colourful shutters, the small canals that link the marina and the fishing port… Everything is a true delight.

Soak up the tradition by strolling along the quayside while the fishermen repair their nets, go whale watching or sit on a terrace on the seaside promenade and do absolutely nothing, because sometimes contemplation is the best activity in places as beautiful as this.

Arucas, the rum capital

If you had to choose just two reasons to visit Arucas , they would be a visit to San Juan Bautista church and a stroll through the birthplace of Arehucas rum, the most famous rum in the Canary Islands. The former, also known as Arucas cathedral, is surprising in terms of its architecture and size for a town of just 35,000 inhabitants. Although it was built on the site of an old hermitage, the neo-Gothic building that stands today, completed in 1977, is in no way similar to the previous construction .

Our second reason for visiting Arucas is quite different but just as valid, since the town was also the birthplace of the oldest rum cellar in Europe, linked undoubtedly to sugarcane cultivation in this part of Gran Canaria.

Telde, past and present

If you think the town of Telde is steeped in history, wait until you visit the surrounding area. Although the order in which you visit is up to you, be sure to walk through the San Juan neighbourhood, where the town was founded, featuring the beautiful church of San Juan, and the San Francisco neighbourhood, whose narrow streets hold surprises around every corner. And before enjoying everything its 10 kilometres of coastline have to offer, and the image of boats bobbing along in the water, make sure you visit astonishing sites such as Cendro, Tara, El Baladero, Tufia and the Montaña de las Cuatro Puertas (caves which were once inhabited by indigenous people).

DISCOVER THE BEST BEACHES IN GRAN CANARIA

In Gran Canaria, the range of beaches on offer is almost as extensive as its towns and villages and natural areas. Each day, you can decide what takes your fancy, whether it is an urban beach with a full range of services, an unspoilt hard-to-access cove, or an artificial beach where you can spend the day in what feels like the Caribbean. And, if you stay for a few days, you can experience it all. For now, here are some of the best beaches that you can visit in Gran Canaria.

Anfi del Mar, a mini Caribbean

We can’t say for sure that Anfi del Mar  is the most spectacular beach in Gran Canaria, because the island boasts many excellent beaches, but what is for certain is that it has the most unusual history. To explore its uniqueness we must go back to the 1990s when a Norwegian businessman decided that it would be interesting to recreate the look and feel of the Caribbean in the area. To do so, he had thousands of tons of sand shipped from the Bahamas and built the beach of his dreams. Add in some palm trees and the turquoise water and the image couldn’t be more ‘Caribbean’. The beach is perfect for families due to its calm water as well as anyone looking to spend the day sprawled out on a sun lounger under the shade of a palm tree with intermittent views of the bars.

To visit this paradise you must head to the municipality of Mogán, between the towns of Puerto Rico and Arguineguín.

Sheltered from currents due to its shell shape, Amadores beach offers visitors a calm place to spend the day in peace and quiet, go snorkelling and do other water sports. Spanning almost 500 metres of golden sand, many families are often attracted by the tranquil pool-like waters. Nearby, there are a large number of restaurants, bazaars, and different types of entertainment, making it an ideal location to visit at any time of the year.

Playa de Amadores gran canaria

Playa del Inglés, something for everyone

Located in the south of Gran Canaria,  Playa del Inglés  is one of the most touristy beaches on the island. This is because the beach, which spans a length of three kilometres, has numerous plus points, such as its location, between the tourist resort of Playa del Inglés and Punta de Maspalomas, which makes it easy to reach, and services including beach bars, showers, toilets and sun lounger hire. The calm water and the option of doing sports also make it perfect for families with children.

playa del ingles gran canaria

Las Canteras beach is situated in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the island’s capital, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a fantastic place to spend the day and a beautiful spot. One of the great benefits of the beach is its location right in the historical quarter of the city, which means you can visit to stroll along its two-kilometre shore or sit in a hammock facing the sea whenever you fancy. It also has special access for people with reduced mobility and there is a wide range of restaurants in the surrounding area. Without a doubt, it is one of Gran Canaria’s must-visit places.

playa de las canteras gran canaria

Playa de las Canteras. Gran Canaria.

In the municipality of San Bartolomé is Las Meloneras beach, which is 500 metres long and has good services for beachgoers. Its golden sand and easy access mean it is frequented by families and people who prefer to have everything close at hand, such as a seaside promenade for walking, restaurants, ice cream parlours, souvenir shops and even spas.

In the surrounding area there are also various places worth a visit, including Maspalomas lighthouse, which is located at one end of the beach, the Punta Mujeres archaeological site, and the Maspalomas Dunes Special Nature Reserve, where you can enjoy a small-scale desert experience.

In the west of the island, in La Aldea de San Nicolás, is Güi Güi or Güigüi beach, one of the few remaining unspoilt beaches in Gran Canaria, due to the fact that accessing it is not suitable for everyone. To get there you must leave your car in the village of Tasartico and walk along dirt tracks for about five kilometres (five there and five on the way back). Is it worth the hike you ask? Yes, and very much so, although if you are not keen on the steep incline, you can also get there by boat.

Once there you will find a near-deserted cove (bring water and a snack) with large pebbles where nudism is permitted.

Hike in tamadaba national park; one of the best things to do in gran canaria.

Due to its volcanic and mountainous landscapes, one of the top things to do in Gran Canaria is go hiking. From vast barren trails and shaded pine forests to rugged rocky outcrops and green verdant valleys, there’s a diverse range of landscapes to discover.

One of the best places for hiking in Gran Canaria is the Tamadaba National Park, located on the northwest coast. The Tamadaba National Park is characterised by forests of indigenous Canary pine trees, lush valleys, secluded beaches and steep sloping cliffs plunging into the ocean making it one of the most beautiful places to visit in Gran Canaria.

There are many hiking trails in the national park ranging from relatively flat easily accessible strolls to more challenging trails leading you deeper into the park.

Our top tip: if you’re staying in Puerto de las Nieves or Agaete , you can combine a visit to Bodega los Berrazales with Tamadaba National Park. Catch the 102 bus to El Lomo for the winery and hike back along the section between San Pedro and Puerto de las Nieves from this hike . The scenery is unreal, we felt like we’d stepped into Jurassic Park!

Fall in love with puerto de mogan.

Located on the south coast of Gran Canaria, Puerto de Mogan is a former fishing village now turned tourist resort. It’s one of the best places to visit in Gran Canaria for a relaxing beach destination away from the noisier and crowded resort towns of Maspalomas or Playa del Ingles.

Strolling the Old Town of Puerto de Mogan is one of our favourite things to do in Gran Canaria. Quaint Mediterranean cottages with beautiful balconies line the marina while white-washed houses in the narrow streets don colourful flowers.

Yachts in the marina lined with colourful quaint cottages in Puerto de Mogan, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

Although the beach is small and therefore rather crowded, it’s a lovely spot for a swim as the breakwater means the ocean is always calm. The beach is lined with plenty of restaurants and cafes so you’ll never have to venture far.

Our top tip:  some of Gran Canaria’s best restaurants are in the Old Town of Puerto de Mogan.

Accommodation in Puerto de Mogan

  • Budget: Las Brisas Mogan Apartment – located just 2 minutes’ walk from Playa de Mogán and close to the marina, these fully-equipped apartments enjoy a shared rooftop terrace offering stunning sea views.

Explore the charming town of firgas.

Known as the town of water, Firgas is hands-down one of the most beautiful places to visit in Gran Canaria!

This charming town has a long history with water and one of the top things to do in Gran Canaria is to visit the artificial waterfall flowing 30 metres down Paseo de Gran Canaria in the centre of the Old Town.

This street is absolutely beautiful! The charming waterfall is lined with vibrant flowerbeds and the street is decorated with colourful tiled murals depicting the different municipalities on the island.

Continue on from Paseo de Gran Canaria to Paseo de Canarias where each of the Canary Islands has been sculpted and sits alongside its coat of arms and an image of scenery typical to that island.

Other places to visit in Firgas include the San Roque Church, Plaza and Mirador with a view out to the ocean, the Old Royal Canal which is the restored water channels used by women to launder clothes in the past and the monument to the rancher; a tribute to farmers and ranchers who helped the region to prosper.

Take Part in Las Palmas Carnival; one of the best things to do in Gran Canaria

This is one of the most unique things to do in Gran Canaria and we’d 100% recommend trying to time your visit with the Las Palmas Carnival.

Las Palmas Carnival is the most popular festival in the Canary Islands. For three weeks every year, the island celebrates one of the biggest carnivals in the world (apparently it rivals the Rio Carnival!).

Gran Canaria transforms into an endless party and the streets are alive with music, dancing, colour, laughter, events and an incredible amount of fun!

The carnival usually lasts around 3 weeks with events, parades, galas, drag contests, floats and dances. On the penultimate day, the Big Carnival Parade is held which is what we’d recommend timing your visit to Gran Canaria with.

Over 100 decorated floats pass through the streets of Las Palmas for approximately 7 kilometres each with a different theme. Each lorry has a DJ blasting music while people dance along behind or even join the float – most of them have bars and toilets on!

This is one of the best things to see in Gran Canaria and takes place in January and February.

Hike to pico de las nieves.

Located at 1,949 metres above sea level, Pico de las Nieves is Gran Canaria’s highest peak and rewards visitors with magnificent views across the island with its deep valleys and rugged landscapes.

On a clear day, you can even see Mount Teide; a volcano on Tenerife and the highest point in Spain!

Helen sitting at the peak of Pico de las Nieves with Roque Nublo and Mount Tiede in the distance, Gran Canaria

Although you can drive to Pico de las Nieves, we’d recommend hiking so you can experience some of Central Gran Canaria’s stunning scenery.

There are numerous hiking trails around Pico de las Nieves. We hiked this circular route from Llanos de la Pez which is well signposted, easy to follow and leads you through lush forests, barren land, fascinating rock formations and incredible viewpoints.

The viewpoint at Pico de las Nieves also gets really busy with cars parked along the road and people at the viewpoint so hiking allows you to experience great scenery and viewpoints all to yourself.

Book a tour from Las Palmas to Pico de las Nieves and Roque Nublo

See roque nublo.

Situated at 1,813 metres above sea level, Roque Nublo is the third-highest summit on the island and one of the top things to see in Gran Canaria. It’s one of the world’s biggest natural crags and has inspired many painters, writers and composers.

This 80-metre-high volcanic monolith has always been a focal point for Canarian pilgrims and today, it also represents a goal for many mountaineers.

Roque Nublo is located in the Tejeda municipality and can be viewed from multiple viewpoints across Gran Canaria’s mountainous centre.

Although you can hike to it, the trail gets very busy as it’s a short 1.5 km from the car park at Degollada de la Goleta which has limited spaces and quickly overflows.

We hiked this trail , where we often had great views of Roque Nublo protruding in the distance and we didn’t feel we had to hike any closer.

Visit the Mountain Town Tejeda

As well as being Gran Canaria’s mountainous central municipality, Tejeda is also a charming and picturesque town that we’d definitely recommend spending at least 1 night.

Amble about the town’s quaint cobbled streets, visit the beautiful Parochial Church of Nuestra Señora de Socorro which dates back to 1921, don’t miss the views of the island from Cruz de Tejeda and enjoy the view from the town over the white-washed houses with red tile roofs and deep into the valley below.

The view over white-washed houses with red roofs in the valley below Tejeda Town nestled underneath impressive rock formations

Tejeda is one of the best places to visit in Gran Canaria for those wanting to try traditional Canarian dishes. Goat’s meat and beef are very common and delicious as are potato soups, watercress and jaramagos (cruciferous plant). However, the food that stands out the most is almonds.

Almond trees grow around Tejeda and it used to be quite common for families to have almond trees in their gardens and make their own almond cakes. Until the 1960s, many young girls also had jobs collecting almonds so a lot of them still make marzipan at home.

The best place to visit in Tejeda (and also Gran Canaria) to try sweet treats made with almonds is Dulceria Nublo; a pastry shop with origins dating back to the 1940s and fuses traditional baking methods with new recipes and modern demands. They use more almonds than sugar in their products and even the ovens are heated up with almond shells!

Having pastries and coffees from Dulceria Nublo at the viewpoint overlooking white-washed houses with red roofs and dramatic rock formations is one of the best things to do in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain

Accommodation in Tejeda

  • Budget:  Princess Antonella – this cosy apartment is located down a quaint quiet street within walking distance of Tejeda town. It features a kitchen, BBQ and terrace with wonderful views across the mountains for sunset and sunrise.
  • Mid-range:  Casita Roque Nublo – this charming holiday home is located within walking distance of Tejeda town and features a fully equipped kitchen and lovely garden with amazing views across the town and surrounding mountains.
  • Luxury:  Parador de Cruz de Tejeda – situated at one of the highest points of Gran Canaria , this stunning luxurious hotel offers panoramic views across the surrounding mountains and forests and an extensive spa.

Swim in Las Salinas de Agaete

Located a 10-minute walk from Puerto de las Nieves are Las Salinas de Agaete; three natural volcanic swimming pools sheltered from the open ocean and linked by underwater tunnels.

They’re idyllic to swim in and offer magnificent views of Gran Canaria’s rugged northwest coast. There’s also plenty of space for sunbathing and a small beach.

Swimming in the pools you can see the big waves from the ocean crashing into the rocks and overflowing into the pools; this is really one of the most unique Gran Canaria activities.

There are toilets and a kiosk bar although the kiosk was closed when we were there (even though Google said it was open).

Explore Arucas

One of the best things to do in Gran Canaria is explore the beautiful historical and traditional town of Arucas , rich in history and surrounded by incredible natural scenery.

Arucas is located 12km from Las Palmas and can easily be visited if you’re driving to the west coast from the capital.

Arucas, like many other towns in Gran Canaria, is centred around its church and plaza; San Juan Bautista Church and the Plaza de San Juan. The church was built entirely by hand between 1909 and 1917.

Surrounding the church and plaza are many emblematic and historical buildings, picturesque colourful streets and quaint cafes and restaurants. Spend some time strolling around the town soaking up the peaceful atmosphere.

Other top things to do in Arucas include:

  • Arehucas Rum Distillery –  rum has been produced here since 1884 and you can take a guided tour which includes learning about the distillery’s origins, visiting the ageing cellar, learning about the rum production process, visiting the mill, fermentation and distillation rooms, the bottling lines and a tasting session. Tickets cost €7 and no reservation is required.
  • Plaza de la Constitution – where you’ll find the Town Council and former Municipal Market.
  • Municipal Museum and Park – lovely for a short stroll with several tree-lined pathways and full of beautiful flowers.
  • Jardin de la Marquesa – a small botanical garden with over 2,500 species of tropical and sub-tropical flora on display. €6 entrance fee.
  • La Montana de Arucas – a former volcano that dominates the Arucas landscape with a viewpoint across the town and northern Gran Canaria. If you have a car, we’d recommend driving as it’s a 30-minute walk from the Plaza de San Juan up the windy road.
  • Piedras la Cantera – a historic quarry which has played a significant role in shaping the town’s architectural heritage. Stone extracted from this quarry has been used in constructing several iconic buildings including the San Juan Bautista Church.

Discover Sardina del Norte

Sardina del Norte is a bit of an unknown gem among tourists in northern Gran Canaria in the municipality of Galdar.

Historically, Sardina del Norte was a small port that played an important role during the 15th and 16th centuries during the fighting of the conquest of the island. After the conquest, Sardina del Norte became an important site for the sugar trade until the Port of Las Palmas developed into the island’s main port.

Today, Sardina del Norte is a charming fishing port with a black-sand beach with a contrasting backdrop of beautiful colourful buildings. The sea is a gorgeous greeny-blue colour and is one of the most highly rated spots for scuba diving in Gran Canaria.

Experience Sunrise at the Dunas de Maspalomas

Visiting the Dunas de Maspalomas is one of the most popular things to do in Gran Canaria. For this reason, they get very busy so we’d recommend visiting at sunrise when it’s quieter and also incredibly peaceful.

The Dunas de Maspalomas is one of the most unique places to visit in Gran Canaria. It was established as a protected Nature Reserve in 1987 and includes a vast beach, sand dune system, lagoon and palm groves.

Sunrise at the Dunas de Maspalomas overlooking huge sand dunes and the ocean is one of the best things to do in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain

The dunes began to form during the last ice age when sand was washed up from the bottom of the ocean when the water retreated and sand was left exposed. Over time, the wind carried the sand towards the shore. Even today, the dunes are constantly moving at a rate of 2 – 5 metres per year from east to west.

Unfortunately, due to increases in urban development and human impact, the dunes are constantly losing sand. It’s estimated around 45,000 cubic metres of sand are lost each year leading to increasing erosion and a negative impact on the animals and plants living here. There’s a concern the dune system may disappear in less than a generation if this continues.

There’s currently a plan in place to work on the natural recovery of the Dunas de Maspalomas in several phases. Recently, walking routes have been mapped out and visitors must stick to these routes to protect the fauna. These were introduced in 2020 when the system noticeably improved after lockdown.

Maspalomas is home to some of the best Gran Canaria activities, many of which take place at the Dunas de Maspalomas so head to the link below to discover more.

Go wine tasting.

Wine tasting may not immediately spring to mind when thinking of the best things to do in Gran Canaria, however, the rich volcanic soils and variable weather give wines produced here a real depth of flavour.

Wine cultivation in the Canary Islands dates back to the 15th century when the first Spanish conquerors arrived on the islands. In the 16th century, malvasian wines from the islands achieved international acclaim and became known in European courts and were even complimented by William Shakespeare!

What’s unique about the wine produced in the Canary Islands is that the islands have remained free from phylloxera; an insect that affects vine cultivation. As a result, vine cultivation can take place on open ground without needing rootstocks, allowing the plants to maximise the consumption of soil minerals and develop unusual properties.

One of the best places to visit in Gran Canaria for wine tasting is Bodega los Berrazales . This winery (and coffee plantation) is over 200 years old and is situated in the breathtaking scenery of the Tamadaba National Park. Guided tours cost €12 and also include a tasting.

Try the Local Food

We find one of the best ways to get to know a destination is through its food so one of our favourite things to do in Gran Canaria was try as many local dishes as we could.

Food in Gran Canaria is based on simple flavourful ingredients and fresh local produce grown on the island as much as possible. Some traditional Gran Canarian dishes include:

  • Mojo – mojo refers to several types of sauces varying in spiciness and flavours and is a staple in Gran Canarian cuisine served alongside many foods.
  • Papas Arrugadas – probably the most popular food in Gran Canaria and found on pretty much every menu. They’re Canarian potatoes and served with mojo and are delicious. They’re often called ‘wrinkly potatoes’ as they’re small and wrinkled when boiled.
  • Gran Canaria cheeses  – we didn’t know Gran Canaria had its own cheese and these did not disappoint. Most cheeses are cured and semi-cured and made from either sheep or goat milk or a mixture of both. One of our favourite dishes was fried cheese accompanied with red fruit jam – this was absolutely delicious and we ordered it every time we saw it on the menu.
  • Pulpo a la Canaria – this is a flavourful dish of octopus served with Canarian potatoes and peppers in a spicy sauce.
  • Croquettes – one of Helen’s favourite tapas dishes and include a variety of fillings including cheese, ham, mushroom, oxtail and prawns.
  • Sancocho – boiled salted fish typically sea bass or a local variant of grouper and garnished with potatoes, sweet potatoes and mojo served in a clay casserole.
  • Ropa Vieja – a stew made with chicken, pork or beef with vegetables and potatoes.
  • Seafood – seafood in general is a staple in Gran Canaria and you’ll find endless options of locally caught fresh seafood cooked in various ways.

If you’re looking to see as many of the best things to do in Gran Canaria as you can, we’d recommend between 7 days and 2 weeks. We visited for 9 days staying in different places and we’d have liked a few more.

If you’re looking to head to the south coast only for some beach and sun then a week would be enough.

How to get around Gran Canaria

The easiest way to get around Gran Canaria is with a car as this gives you complete freedom and flexibility on timings, locations and when to stop if you spot a nice view.

The roads are fairly quiet out of the cities and tourist hotspots so it’s easy to drive on the island. The windy mountain roads need a bit of navigating at times and could do with resurfacing so if you’re heading to the mountains, we’d recommend an automatic.

The bus company Global operates around the island so you can absolutely get around Gran Canaria without having a car but it will take more planning, you may need to leave early and make a couple of changes.

Taxis in Gran Canaria are handy if going short distances and not too expensive. If crossing municipalities however, the fare is considerably increased.

You won’t need a car to get around the cities and we found driving in Las Palmas to be quite stressful. We walked everywhere in Las Palmas although buses are frequent or you can cycle using the public bike rental Sitycleta. E-scooters are also common.

Another great way to get around Gran Canaria once you’re staying somewhere is with excursions. Most excursions offer return transport from your accommodation and everything is organised for you.

Get Your Guide offer a wide range of tours with local and knowledgeable guides. Browse some of their tours below and head to their website for more .

Prices in Gran Canaria

Prices in Gran Canaria are very reasonable and considerably lower than in the UK, especially out of the main tourist hotspots.

Away from the south coast and out of hotels, expect to pay around €3 for a large beer, €5 for spirit and mixer and main meals from €8. Obviously, if you’re somewhere more high-end, these prices will be higher but still lower than in upmarket places in the UK.

Even on the south coast and at hotel bars and restaurants, the average price of food and drinks is lower than the same standard in the UK and still reasonable. Large beers are around €5 and main meals are around €12.

Entry Requirements

As a UK passport holder, you can travel to Gran Canaria for up to 90 days in a 180-day period without a visa. Your passport must be valid for 3 months from the date you plan to leave.

Gran Canaria is in Spain so uses the Euro. At the time of writing, 1 USD is 0.91 EUR.

Like most countries in Europe, you will need either type C, E or F which have two round pins.

We hope you enjoyed our guide to the best things to do in Gran Canaria. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment or get in contact. We’d also love to hear your favourite Gran Canaria activities so let us know in the comments what these are.

The Top 15 Things to do in Gran Canaria

1. explore underwater treasures at poema del mar.

Cool Things to do in Gran Canaria, Spain: Poema del Mar

Poema del Mar is one of the biggest and best Gran Canaria attractions. The largest aquarium in the Canary Islands, Poema del Mar is divided into three separate sections, each of which invites you to explore a different type of marine environment.

Your journey begins in the jungle section, where you’ll be surrounded by dazzling blue frogs, shocking electric eels, quirky pig-nosed turtles, and mesmerizing stingrays. The whole place is decorated according to the underwater theme, so you really will feel like you’re in the jungle.

As you move up through the aquarium, you’ll come across the deep ocean section. This is where you’ll discover all kinds of fascinating marine life, from giant octopuses and great white sharks to tiny sea dragons and king crabs.

The final part of the aquarium is dedicated to underwater species you find on coral reefs and at the beach. This area is filled with stunning creatures, such as clownfish, seahorses, jellyfish, and turtles.

2. Gaze in awe at the Maspalomas Dunes

best towns to visit gran canaria

You’ll find some of the best sights in Gran Canaria along the southern coast in Maspalomas. While this part of the island is usually considered a family-friendly tourist resort, it’s also home to some of the most remarkable sand dunes you’ll ever see in your life.

These golden dunes are absolutely huge and stretch along the coast for miles. They form a very fragile ecosystem, which is why it’s important to follow one of the walking routes when exploring. Although you may feel like you’re in the middle of an endless desert, all the routes are clearly marked, so there’s no chance of getting lost.

Gran Canaria, Spain Bucket List: Maspalomas Dunes

For some high-speed thrills, sign up for a sandboarding experience. Sandboarding is very similar to snowboarding. But instead of wrapping up and zooming down snowy slopes, you’ll cover yourself in suntan lotion and speed down sandy dunes. It’s an experience you’ll never forget!

3. Snap photos of the iconic Roque Nublo

best towns to visit gran canaria

Roque Nublo is the most popular Gran Canaria sightseeing attraction. A protected UNESCO landmark hidden away in the central region of Tejeda, this natural attraction is a spectacular volcanic rock that stands a staggering 262 feet tall.

The eye-catching wonder was created as a result of a powerful volcanic eruption that happened around 4.5 million years ago. Roque Nublo is surrounded by a rocky, barren, alien-like landscape that looks like it comes from another world. The easiest way to get there is to drive into Tejeda and take a short walk to the rock.

Gran Canaria, Spain Things to do: Roque Nublo

But if you’re feeling energetic, there are loads of amazing hikes in the area that show off some of Gran Canaria’s most spectacular and breathtaking landscapes. We suggest starting at Degollada de la Goleta and following the signposts for the hiking route. You’ll be treated to amazing views of Tejeda mountain and Roque Nublo along the way.

4. Visit the Jardín Botánico Viera y Clavijo

best towns to visit gran canaria

For some of the most beautiful things to see in Gran Canaria, spend the day at Jardín Botánico Viera y Clavijo . Set in the northeastern part of the island in Tafira Alta, this gorgeous botanical garden is remarkably green and lush, in comparison to the rest of the dry, rocky landscape.

Take a look around, and you’ll discover around 500 stunning plants which are endemic to the Canary Islands. As well as spiky cacti and plump succulents, you’ll also come across a number of beautiful species which have been imported from countries all over the world.

Cool Things to do in Gran Canaria, Spain: Jardín Botánico Viera y Clavijo

Close to the entrance, you’ll find a modern bronze bust of José de Viera y Clavijo. He was the Spanish botanist who dreamed of opening up a beautiful botanical garden in Gran Canaria.

If you’re really into horticulture, you’ll be fascinated by the laboratory and library onsite. The Jardín Botánico Viera y Clavijo does a great job at protecting all kinds of species and plants and records all their research and achievements within these two educational spots.

5. Sample cochino negro canario

If you love trying new food, one of the top things to do in Gran Canaria is to stop by a Canarian restaurant and order yourself a plate of cochino negro canario . This dish is made from the tender, juicy meat of the Canarian black pig. It tastes so much better than regular pork and has a long history that goes back centuries.

Years ago, families would raise their own pig to eat. Not only did the pig provide the family with a source of food, but it also gave them a way to sustainably dispose of organic material by feeding it to the pig. Because the meat became so popular, the Canarian black pig almost became extinct.

Genuine cochino negro canario can be tricky to get your hands on. While a lot of restaurants have it on their menu, only a few sell genuine black pig. Granja el Tio Isidro is one of the places that sells real cochino negro canario .

This restaurant specializes in farming and cooking the famed pig and produces some of the most delicious meat you’ll ever try in Gran Canaria.

6. Discover Canarian cultural secrets at Pueblo Canario

If you want to learn more about the local people and the heritage that made the Canary Islands what they are today, spend some time at Pueblo Canario. One of the top things to do in Gran Canaria, this cultural attraction is located in the center of the capital city and invites you on a fascinating journey into the past.

The museum is designed to look like a traditional Canarian village, complete with pretty plazas, typical Canarian architecture, and iconic Canarian balconies. To make the place feel even more local, you’ll find staff members throughout the museum dressed in typical clothing and doing things the Canarian people have been doing for generations.

You can watch traditional Canarian folk performances, see people making baskets that have been used to carry fresh produce for centuries, witness locals caring for typical Canarian farm animals, and loads more. Pueblo Canario is also home to a captivating art gallery filled with masterpieces from the Canary Islands and further afield.

7. Shake your hips at Carnival

best towns to visit gran canaria

The annual Carnival is one of the most incredible Gran Canaria activities that you’ve got to check out. Held each year between February and March (the dates change depending on when Easter falls), Carnival is celebrated in all parts of the island. But for the most impressive events, head to the capital of Las Palmas.

Here you’ll find the streets filled with music and laughter as extravagant parades wind throughout the city. Larger-than-life floats, people wearing amazing costumes you rarely see outside Brazil, and remarkably talented bands flow throughout the streets and provide hours of entertainment.

Fun Things to do in Gran Canaria, Spain: Carnival

What makes the Gran Canaria Carnival different from the other Carnivals in the Canaries is the drag queen pageant. Men decked out in stunning makeup, phenomenal ball gowns, and shoes as tall as stilts take to the stage and compete for the top prize.

Although programs are advertised throughout the city, things rarely stick to a schedule. Activities tend to start a little later than planned in the Canary Islands, and parties go on for hours longer than expected, so be flexible!

8. Explore the Venice of Spain

best towns to visit gran canaria

Walk through the stunning streets of Venice without leaving Spain by heading to the dazzling town of Puerto de Mógan. One of the most unique things to do in Gran Canaria, a day trip to this charming village is guaranteed to make you feel relaxed and serene, no matter how tired you are from sightseeing.

As soon as you step foot in the village, you’ll instantly understand how it got its nickname. Puerto de Mogán is filled with whitewashed houses dressed in bright pink bougainvillea, which are dotted in between gently flowing canals that run out to sea. There are several bridges that cross the river and connect you to hidden plazas, secret cocktail lounges, and clandestine tapas bars.

What to do in Gran Canaria, Spain: Venice of Spain

There’s no major landmark or attraction in Puerto de Mogán. The coastal village itself is the highlight! If you’ve got your swimming gear with you, there’s a beautiful golden sandy beach in the village. It’s protected by a marina and rock wall, so the water is always perfectly calm for swimming.

9. Seek out wild whales and dolphins

best towns to visit gran canaria

One of the coolest things to do in Gran Canaria is to sign up for a whales and dolphins boat trip. There’s nothing like sailing on the water and admiring these magical creatures in the wild, playing and doing whatever they feel like.

The waters around Gran Canaria are teeming with more than 30 different species of whales and dolphins. You’re almost guaranteed to see pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins. Depending on the time of year you visit, you may also be lucky enough to see humpback whales and even sperm whales.

Best Things to do in Gran Canaria, Spain: Seek Out Wild Whales and Dolphins

Turtle sightings are also pretty much a sure thing, whenever you sail. The captains get to know the turtles and can recognize them thanks to their unique markings. They’ll be able to tell you how old the turtles are and give you a little background on their lives so far.

This tour is one of the best in Gran Canaria. It’s suitable for people of all ages, there’s a bar onboard, and the boat is fitted with a glass bottom so you can see the amazing underwater world below you.

10. Try All The cheese

best towns to visit gran canaria

If you’re a fan of cheese, you’ll find one of the most fun things to do in Gran Canaria hidden away inside the island’s local Canarian restaurants. Most traditional restaurants on the island offer an incredible selection of Canarian cheeses as appetizers, and you’ve absolutely got to try them.

You’ll often see “Tabla de queso” or “Tabla mixta” on restaurant appetizer menus. The first is a plate of different local cheeses and the second is a mixed plate of local cheeses and cured meats. They often come with a pretty hefty price tag, but that’s because the quality is superb. If you’re on a tight budget, you can usually find small local cheese plates available in most supermarkets.

For something truly decadent, order “Queso a la plancha.” This is a medium-texture (somewhere between soft and hard) cheese, which is cooked on a hot plate until it’s tender and golden. It’s usually drizzled with local honey and served with Canarian mojo sauces. After your first bite, it’s the only thing you’ll ever want to eat!

11. Go thrill-seeking on the coast

best towns to visit gran canaria

Gran Canaria is an amazing place to push yourself to your limits and find out exactly what you’re capable of. The waters around the island provide the perfect conditions for snorkeling, scuba diving, water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, and loads more.

There’s no single best place for watersports in Gran Canaria. The conditions are almost ideal all over the coast. Because of this, you’ll find watersport kiosks dotted close to practically every beach that rent out equipment. Some spots even provide multi-day courses so you can learn how to surf or scuba dive during your vacation.

Must do things in Gran Canaria, Spain: Thrill-Seeking on the Coast

If you’d rather stay out of the water, there are still plenty of places you can seek out high-speed thrills. You can go skydiving, paragliding, bungee jumping, canyoning, and coasteering throughout the island. The landscape is so diverse in Gran Canaria that you can do loads of different exciting activities in a single day without wasting hours driving all over the place.

12. Get a bird’s-eye view of the island

best towns to visit gran canaria

If you’ve never been in a helicopter before, one of the must-do things in Gran Canaria is to strap yourself in and fly high above the island. Helicopter tours are hugely popular throughout the island because they give you the chance to see the remarkably diverse landscape you simply can’t see any other way.

There are a number of different helicopter tours to choose from. If you’re not sure how comfortable you’ll be in the air, you can start with one of the simple 10-minute coastal packages. This route takes you along the coast from Bahía Feliz to Faro de Maspalomas. You’ll get to see the famous Maspalomas sand dunes, and you may even spot turtles in the water if the helicopter flies low enough.

Best Things to do in Gran Canaria, Spain: Bird’s-eye view of the island

If money’s no issue, splash out and treat yourself to the longer 45-minute tour . This tour includes the part of the coastline listed above, but it also continues up the coast past a number of stunning beaches. It circles around the iconic Roque Nublo and Valle de Tejeda before dropping you off at your starting point.

13. Celebrate with Día de Canarias

best towns to visit gran canaria

If you’re planning your trip for the end of May, you’ve got to take part in Día de Canarias. Joining in with this annual festival on May 30 is one of the best things to do in Gran Canaria!

Locals in Gran Canaria are incredibly proud of their culture, and Día de Canarias gives you the chance to learn all about it. All kinds of events take place all over the island, from streets and plazas to supermarkets and museums. Keep an eye out for posters advertising activities or ask at your nearest tourist information office for more information.

Expect to see loads of adults and children wearing traditional Canarian clothes and behaving as people did generations ago. You’ll see people making, sharing, and eating traditional Canarian food. Random dances will also break out throughout the plazas and streets, with folk bands playing typical Canarian music and loads of traditional drinks to go around.

14. Step back in time at the Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park

best towns to visit gran canaria

If you love stepping back in time and seeing what things were like centuries ago, the Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park is one of the best things to do in Gran Canaria. This tourist attraction is one of the most important pre-Spanish era archaeological sites in Gran Canaria and is a fascinating place to spend the day, even if you’re not usually into ancient history.

Set inside a network of caves, the museum is covered in cave paintings that show basic geometric shapes and patterns. Experts aren’t quite certain what they represent, but it’s thought that they’ve got something to do with lunar and solar calendars.

Cool Things to do in Gran Canaria, Spain: Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park

There are guided tours in various languages organized each day so you can learn all about the ancient caves and what researchers think went on there. The caves are lit up with atmospheric lighting, giving them a really spooky and mystical vibe.

15. Try sausages only made in Gran Canaria

best towns to visit gran canaria

The food in the Canary Islands is absolutely amazing. Sausages are something the islands specialize in, and you’ll find one of the most unique and delicious in Gran Canaria. Chorizo de teror is made exclusively in Gran Canaria and tastes incredible. While it’s regularly imported to the other Canary Islands, it’s almost impossible to find it anywhere else in the world.

Chorizo de teror is a type of flavor-packed chorizo that’s made with paprika and salt. This gives it a striking orange color that sets it aside from regular chorizo. It has a deliciously soft and creamy texture similar to sobrasada . So instead of slicing it up and layering it on a sandwich, it’s often spread on toast or baguettes.

The best place to buy chorizo de teror is from local farmers’ markets or even supermarkets. It’s often served in single small chorizo links or a great big coil made up of multiple sausages.

1. Maspalomas Dunes, the best place to see in Gran Canaria, Spain

The Maspalomas Dunes are one of the places in Gran Canaria you must see since they form one of the most impressive landscapes in all the Canary Islands, a mix of desert and oasis.

This nature reservation encompasses over 980 acres of sand, palm trees, and ponds. It’s a protected area with several native species, such as the Gran Canaria giant lizard and numerous birds. In fact, if you want to see the island’s native fauna, this is one of the best places to visit in Gran Canaria .  Most of the animals here are in the humid region, known as Charca de Maspalomas , or Maspalomas Lagoon.

The Maspalomas Dunes, thing to do in gran canaria, canary islands

1. The Maspalomas Dunes, an extraordinary place to see in Gran Canaria, Spain

If you’d like to visit the Maspalomas Dunes, I suggest first going to the Las Dunas Interpretation Center . It’s located in the Hotel Riu Palace Maspalomas , which also has a viewpoint overlooking the dunes. From there, you’ll find a path that passes through the dunes and leads to Maspalomas Beach.

This is certainly one of the best activities to do in Gran Canaria , although you should be mindful that it’s a protected natural area.

2. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a must-see in Gran Canaria

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital of the island, making it one of the top tourist attractions in Gran Canaria . The city is in the northwesternmost part of the island, and it’s also the most populated, so it offers tons of leisure and cultural activities.

If you’re going to visit Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, I recommend starting with its historic center , where you’ll find all kinds of landmarks, like Plaza de Santa Ana and the Santa Ana Cathedral . Curiously, in the square, you’ll find eight dog statues, which are known as the guardians of Santa Ana.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, activities in gran canaria

Another interesting place is the Museo Canario , which has become a must-see in Gran Canaria , along with the Columbus House . They’re both in the popular Vegueta neighborhood, which also has the oldest market on the islands that I recommend visiting, the Vegueta Market .

You can also go see the Triana neighborhood, which is known for its colonial houses and variety of shops. Of course, if it’s your first time in the capital and you’re short on time, I think this free tour gives you a good overview of the city.

3. Roque Nublo, a lovely place to visit in Gran Canaria

The Roque de Nublo Natural Monument in Nublo Rural Park is one of the Gran Canaria points of interest you shouldn’t miss.

This volcanic rock formation has a rather peculiar shape and stands over 260 feet tall, although it’s more than 5,900 feet above sea level, making it an amazing viewpoint. Actually, it’s the third-highest point in Gran Canaria after Morro de la Agujereada and Pico de las Nieves, which both exceed 6,230 feet.

Roque Nublo, best place to visit in gran canaria

It’s very common among both locals and tourists to walk the path leading to Roque Nublo. The hike, which is one of the best things to do in Gran Canaria , is just over a mile long. Despite the uneven terrain, it’s not challenging, so it’s a good activity for most people.

While you can do the hike on your own, if you book this excursion , you’ll learn a lot about the area, so I highly recommend it. You could also book this one if you want to combine Roque Nublo with the town of Teror and the Bandama Caldera, two other sites in Gran Canaria .

4. Tejeda and Roque Bentayga, two stunning places to visit in Gran Canaria

Tejeda is considered one of the most charming towns in Spain . The inland town is surrounded by mountains and offers views of Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga . Part of its charm is the fact that its landscape is part of the Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

El Roque Bentayga is one of the top attractions in Gran Canaria that I recommend if you’re in Tejeda, as well as its Interpretation Center, where you’ll learn all about the archaeology in the area. You’ll have to walk about 2 hours to get to the large rock formation, but it’s one of the most popular Gran Canaria activities , so it’s worth it.

Tejeda and Roque Bentayga, gran canaria top 10

Once you get to Roque Bentayga, you can continue walking on the circular route that passes through Charco de la Paloma, Culata de Tejeda, and Cruz de Timagada. Along the way, you’ll get beautiful views of Roque Nublo.

Another thing to do in Gran Canaria, especially if you travel in spring, is to enjoy the almond blossom festivities in Tejeda.

5. Teror and San Mateo, two markets to visit in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

Teror is another place to visit in Gran Canaria and, along with Tejeda, it’s considered one of the most interesting towns on the island.

Teror and San Mateo, gran canaria what to see

The old historic district is a must-see in Gran Canaria since it’s one of the most beautiful. Among the pedestrian streets, you’ll see the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pino , one of the most iconic buildings. I also suggest going to the local market to try the chorizo from Teror , one of the town’s typical foods. You can even book this tour that goes through the markets of Teror and San Mateo.

Speaking of which, San Mateo is another hotspot in Gran Canaria to visit, and it’s surrounded by natural scenery. In fact, it belongs to the Canary Islands Network for Protected Natural Areas, which explains its pristine beauty.

6. Tilos de Moya, the best place in Gran Canaria for hiking

Tilos de Moya , within the Doramas rural park, is one of the best places in Gran Canaria for a nature walk.

The most popular trail here is a 1-mile circular route that goes into a laurel forest with fayas, hollyhocks, and cockscomb, an endemic plant species in danger of extinction. Hiking through this area is one of the best things to do in Gran Canaria for families since the trail is quite easy and well-trafficked. Moreover, it’s a peaceful place to hike, although it’s more crowded on weekends and holidays.

Los Tilos de Moya, place to visit in gran canaria

The route begins at the Los Tilos Interpretation Center , where you’ll find free parking, trail maps, and more information. You can find schedules and specific info on this website .

If you don’t have much time, you can book this guided tour , which combines a walk through Los Tilos de Moya with a visit to Artenara, where the Risco Caído archaeological site is located. It’s another awesome place to visit in Gran Canaria , so I’m sure you’ll love it.

7. Dolphin and whale-watching, one of the things to do in Gran Canaria, Spain

Seeing wild dolphins and whales is, in my opinion, one of the best things to do in Gran Canaria . Plus, this island is considered one of the best in the Canary Islands for this activity, although it’s more common to see dolphins than whales.

Dolphin and whale-watching, sightseeing in gran canaria

7. Dolphin and whale-watching, one of the best things to do in Gran Canaria, Spain

If you want to see whales and dolphins in Gran Canaria , I recommend this tour , which departs from Puerto Rico, south of Gran Canaria. You’ll travel by motorboat with a guide who will tell you all about the cetaceans that live in the Canarian waters. You’ll also make a brief stop to swim in the Atlantic Ocean and visit some of the most beautiful beaches on the island.

This is one of the best outdoor activities in Gran Canaria , especially with kids, and you can do it any time of year since many dolphin and whale species live here permanently. Of course, keep in mind that they’re wild animals, so while the tour company has years of experience in predicting their movements, they can’t guarantee it 100%. That said, I can tell you that whenever we’ve taken a dolphin and whale-watching tour here, we’ve been lucky enough to see quite a few of them, so I’m sure you will, too!

8. Puerto de Mogán, another spectacular place to see in Gran Canary, Spain

Puerto de Mogán , located on the southwestern coast of the island, is another popular place to see in Gran Canaria. One of its main attractions is the ravines surrounding it, and Veneguera and Mogán are the most impressive.

Puerto de Mogán, tourist attractions in gran canaria

Along with numerous trails between the ravines and natural scenery, there is also a wide beach with crystal clear water where you can swim, sunbathe, and practice watersports. You can also book this boat excursion to see the cliffs of Puerto Mogán and snorkel off the coast. The tour also includes a Spanish tapa tasting, so I highly recommend it!

An interesting fact about this town is that it experiences the highest number of sunny days per year in the Canary Islands, so it’s one of the nicest places in Gran Canaria . This area is also known as “Little Venice” or “Venice of the Canaries” because of the canals that intersect some of the streets.

9. Valle de Agaete, another area with more to do in Gran Canaria, Spain

The Valle de Agaete is another beautiful place in Gran Canaria , and it’s known for its plantations, particularly the ones that produce coffee, oranges, and other tropical fruits.

Valle de Agaete, activities to do in gran canaria

The homes in this area still maintain their traditional appearance, even after years of restoration. Seeing them dispersed among the coffee plantations creates one of the most scenic places on the island. In fact, Valle Agaete is one of the top sites in Gran Canaria and all of the Canaries, for growing coffee beans, and the coffee from here is said to be the best in the country!

If you have time, I suggest also visiting the town of Agaete, where you can see the lovely Huerto de las Flores, a botanical garden with over 100 different plant species from all over the world. Alternatively, if you’re short on time, this guided excursion from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Valle Agaete and nearby towns is also very good.

10. Arucas, another city to visit in Gran Canaria

Something to see in Gran Canaria if you have time is the town of Arucas , which is known for its many green spaces. In fact, it has been nicknamed the City of Flowers for all its lovely natural areas.

One of the top attractions in Arucas is the Parque Municipal de las Flores , which has over 200 native and exotic species, as well as a laurel forest. Another good place for sightseeing in Gran Canaria is the Marquesa Garden in Arucas, which features 500 plant species.

Arucas, best in gran canaria spain

Be sure to take advantage of your time in Arucas to see its historic center, which has the Church of San Juan Bautista, built in the Gothic style. It’s in the Plaza de San Juan, where you will find other buildings of great historical value. Another can’t-miss is the Arucas Park and the Heredad de Aguas y Firgas neighborhood.

Finally, if you’d like to grab a coffee or explore the bars and shops in the area, I definitely recommend León y Castillo Street, one of the liveliest parts of Arucas.

11. Firgas, another attraction to see in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

Firgas is another must-see in Gran Canaria since it’s said to be one of the island’s most charming towns. It’s in the northern region of Gran Canaria, next to Barranco de Azuaje , a gorgeous nature reserve with walking trails. It’s one of the best tourist attractions in Gran Canaria , especially for nature and hiking lovers.

Firgas, best things to see in gran canaria

Within the town of Firgas, you’ll also find a historic center with iconic buildings like Casa de la Cultura , the Hermitage of San Juan de Ortega , and the Dominican Convent of San Juan de Ortega . These last two have important religious significance in Firgas.

The Plaza de San Roque is also another interesting area, especially because from here you have some of the best views of the island’s northern coast, with Tenerife and Fuerteventura in the distance. Of course, if you want to see those two islands, you’ll need another full day.

12. Tamadaba Natural Park, the best place to hike in Gran Canaria

Tamadaba Natural Park is another cool thing to see in Gran Canaria . In addition to being one of the wildest parts of the island, it’s the only place to find some endangered species of birds.

Tamadaba Natural Park, cool things to do in gran canaria

The defining characteristic of this park is the Tamadaba pine forest and the rock formations, which feature ravines and cliffs. The formations create an impressive landscape and one of the top tourist attractions in Gran Canaria, Roque Faneque . At over 3,300 feet high, it provides a birds-eye view of much of the island, although it’s not for you if you’re afraid of heights.

One of the most popular things to do here is to go to the Mirador del Balcón , an amazing spot to see the cliffs shaped like a dragon’s tail. Without a doubt, this natural park is one of the best landmarks in Gran Canaria, so I recommend planning some time to visit it, especially if you enjoy nature walks.

13. El Bufadero de La Garita, a unique place to go in Gran Canaria

Visiting El Bufadero de La Garita is another fun thing to do in Gran Canaria , as I’m sure you’ll find the coastal rock formations and geology fascinating. Located in the Telde municipality, this area includes basalt cliffs, volcanic tubes, and a natural pool that occasionally shoot water like a geyser. In reality, it’s a result of the tides and waves pushing through the rocks.

El Bufadero de La Garita, thing to do in gran canaria

While the region is great for sightseeing in Gran Canaria, it can be a dangerous and slippery place, so swimming here is strictly prohibited.

14. Amadores Beach and other must-see beaches in Gran Canaria

If you want to visit some of the best beaches in Gran Canaria, you can’t miss Amadores Beach . It’s in Puerto Rico and is known for its crystal-clear blue waters and fine white sand. Coming here is one of the best things to do in Gran Canaria with kids since the waves are calm and shallow.

Amadores Beach, activities in gran canaria

Maspalomas Beach in Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve is another must-see in Gran Canaria . You can find it between the Maspalomas Lighthouse and Playa del Inglés . That beach is ideal for surfing, and if you’re inexperienced, you can book a lesson here .

Along with all these famous beaches, there is Las Canteras Beach , which is the perfect place to do this snorkeling tour . I also recommend Gran Canaria’s smallest beach, the charming Tufia Beach ; and Güi Güi Beach , which is part of a UNESCO-declared Biosphere Reserve.

15. Barranco de las Vacas, another amazing place to experience in Gran Canaria

Barranco de las Vacas , or Las Vacas Ravine, is another point of interest in Gran Canaria that will leave you awestruck. We didn’t expect to see such a place in Gran Canaria, but its landscapes reminded us of Antelope Canyon in the U.S.

Barranco de las Vacas, best place to visit in gran canaria

One of the main attractions here is Tobas de Colores , intriguing rock formations surrounding a short walking trail. It’s best to visit this place early in the morning to avoid the crowds, or else it’s quite overwhelming.

While you’re there, you can also visit the Temisas Astronomical Observatory , one of the coolest tourist attractions in Gran Canaria . It’s one of the most breathtaking places on the island to see the stars, and it’s actually a designated Starlight Tourist Destination.

Where to stay in Gran Canaria

If you’re going to be in Gran Canaria for several days, the Occidental Margaritas hotel is one of the best options. It’s in the same town as Playa del Inglés, so you’ll be close to the beach and the Maspalomas Dunes, two must-sees in Gran Canaria . Another excellent accommodation is Hotel Riu Palace in Maspalomas, which is home to the Las Dunes Interpretation Center.

Hotels in Gran Canaria, gran canaria what to do

The H10 Playa Meloneras Palace, one of the best all-inclusive resorts in Spain , is also in the southern part of the island, so if any of the above hotels are fully booked, I recommend staying there. If you’d like to stay somewhere in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, to the north, I recommend the Silken Saaj Las Palmas .

Gran Canaria visitor information

Now that you know what to see in Gran Canaria , as well as the best accommodations, I’d like to give you some extra info to help you organize your trip.

How to get to Gran Canaria

There is an airport on Gran Canaria’s east coast, and it receives incoming flights from the peninsula, the other Canary Islands, and a few European cities. So, you’ll have no problems getting here by plane . We always use the Kiwi and Skyscanner websites to find the cheapest flight deals.

You can also get to Gran Canaria by boat from any other Canary Island. The Port of Las Palmas, also known as Puerto de la Luz y Las Palmas, is one of the most important in the Canary Islands. What’s more, there are ships that arrive from different parts of Europe, Africa, and the Americas. That said, if you’re coming from any of these continents, I recommend taking a place since it’s faster and much more comfortable. We use the Direct Ferries website to make boat reservations between the Canary Islands.

How to get around Gran Canaria

The most practical way to get around Gran Canaria is by rental car . Having your own vehicle allows you to move around the island as you wish, and you can explore more remote places without having to stick to a tour or bus schedule. We always book through DiscoverCars , which guarantees the best prices.

If you don’t want to drive, the island has a good public transport system, so you can still reach the main tourist attractions in Gran Canaria . The public transportation network is managed by Global, and you can check schedules, prices, and bus routes here .

Where to eat in Gran Canaria

Believe me when I say that you’ll have no issues finding good restaurants in Gran Canaria.

My top recommendation in the capital city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is Deliciosa Marta . The prices are a bit high, but the dishes are incredible. If you’re looking for something cheaper, you can go to Las Lagunetas , one of the top-rated restaurants on the island. I recommend the churros de pescado , their signature dish and one of the best food to try on the Canary Islands.

In the center of the island, specifically in Firgas, the best restaurant you will find is Asador La Caldera . If you decide to eat here, try to arrive before 2 pm to avoid long wait times.

There are also great restaurants to the south, such as El Senador , which is right in front of Maspalomas Beach. Here you will find typical Canarian food, as well as some Mediterranean and international dishes. Allende 22° in Playa del Inglés is another good choice, particularly for the tapas.

Besides the ones I’ve mentioned, you’ll find plenty more restaurants on the island. So, regardless of where you go in Gran Canaria, you’ll eat well!

Map of Gran Canaria

To end this guide, here is a map with all the points of interest in Gran Canaria . You’ll also find the hotels, restaurants, and other sites I mentioned.

I hope this guide helps you plan an amazing trip to Gran Canaria. If you have any questions, leave me a comment below, and I’ll do my best to help. Have a fun time in Gran Canaria!

12 Top-Rated Things to Do on Gran Canaria

Written by Michael Law and Lana Law Apr 12, 2023

Authors Michael and Lana Law island-hopped through the Canary Islands in the fall of 2022, including an extended stay on Gran Canaria.

Each of the Canary Islands is unique, and Gran Canaria is no exception. This round island is lush and green, a stark contrast to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, with a jagged interior crowned by the very impressive Pico de las Nievas at 1,949 meters. It's reminiscent of Hawaii in some respects, with things to do year-round.

View from parking area at Pico de las Nieves to Roque Nublo

Home to an impressive assortment of beaches in its southeast corner, Gran Canaria is a hot spot for those looking for sun and surf. Beaches here come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from ones with massive sand dunes, right through to crescents of golden sand backed by countless resorts.

Discover the best places to visit with our list of things to do on Gran Canaria.

1. Reserva Natural Especial de Las Dunas de Maspalomas (Playa de Maspalomas)

2. playa de las canteras, 3. driving tour to pico de las nieves, 4. hike up to roque nublo, 5. palmitos park, 6. cocodrilo park, 7. playa puerto rico, 8. las palmas de gran canaria's old town (vegueta), 9. jardin botanico viera & clavijo, 10. casa de colon, 11. poema del mar aquarium, 12. dolphin and whale watching, gran canaria - climate chart.

Beach at Las Dunas de Maspalomas

One of the top attractions in Gran Canaria and a must-see is the spectacular Reserva Natural Especial de Las Dunas Maspalomas. This huge natural reserve is a series of towering dunes just back from the ocean. In some areas, the dunes are fronted by shallow lagoons.

Home to three of the island's most popular and beautiful beaches, Playa de Maspalomas, Playa del Ingles , and El Veril , the area around the reserve is packed with hotels, restaurants, and things to do.

Las Dunas de Maspalomas

Wander out into the dunes if you like, but be prepared. This is hard work, especially under the hot sun of the Canary Islands. Many people choose to take a camel ride, these sand-loving beasts glide effortlessly over the ever-shifting sands and take you to an incredible viewpoint.

Playa de Las Canteras

One of the best urban beaches of all the Canary Islands, Playa de Las Canteras, stretches for over two kilometers. A mix of golden brown and black sand, the beach is a popular destination for the residents living in Las Palmas as opposed to those visiting from overseas.

The beach is backed by a delightful elevated walkway that is a popular destination for joggers, walkers, and those just strolling along aimlessly soaking up the views. Along this stretch, you'll find cafés and restaurants. Grabbing a table here for snacks and drinks is a popular pastime throughout the day and especially at sunset and into the evening.

The beach runs in an arc, and at the southern end, you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas. At the northern end, the beach frequently has very large waves and is a popular spot for playing in the waves, surfing , and boogie boarding .

Street parking is almost impossible but fortunately, several large underground parking lots are available.

View from the top lookout at Pico de las Nieves

One of the most enjoyable things to do on Gran Canaria is to rent a car and go exploring. The roads are excellent, well marked, and will deliver you to spectacular locations.

One of the best routes is to head to the interior of the island to Pico de las Nieves. Drive up, up, and up the twisty roads to the highest point on the island. From a small parking lot, a trail leaves to a very short hiking trail heading to the viewpoint. From here, you can see the ocean; Roque Nublo; and, on a clear day, Volcan Telde on Tenerife.

View from Degollada Becerra lookout

As part of your tour, be sure to stop briefly at the Degollada Becerra lookout and then drive a bit farther to the Parador in Cruz de Tejeda for lunch. Dine on their wonderful patio, home to the most stunning views in the area.

The drive is easiest from the east side of the island. Driving from the south and the west side is much more challenging. Don't be deceived by looking at the map. Although the distance may seem short, drive times on the twisty roads are much longer than you may expect.

Rent a car and go exploring or sign up for the a small-group tour, which takes you to many of the highlights on the island, including Pico de las Nieves.

Roque Nublo

If you have a bit of a taste for adventure, consider tackling the Roque Nublo hiking trail. Extending up to one of the highest areas on the island, this trail has an effort-to-reward ratio that is off the scale.

The huge rock protruding from the top of the flat mountain can be seen from a great distance. It's massive. As you drive around this part of the island, you can't miss it. Seeing it makes you want to do this hike.

Author Mike Law on Roque Nublo hiking trail

The hike is approximately three kilometers round trip , but the elevation gain in this short span is approximately 500 feet . What this means is that you'll have some steep, but manageable sections that with a little effort, most people can easily handle. Keep in mind that this is a hike, not a short walk to a scenic lookout.

The trail is scenic throughout the hike, but the prize at the top is an unbelievable 360-degree view of the surrounding peaks and, if the weather is clear, the top of the 3,715-meter-high Volcan Tilde over on Tenerife.

View from the base of Roque Nublo

The Roque Nublo is the most popular hike on the island, and only limited parking is available at the trailhead. Try to go early to secure a spot. Also, wear sturdy shoes; the trail is uneven and rough in some sections. Flip-flops are a definite no.

Macaw in a live bird show at Palmitos Park, Gran Canaria

Another fun family thing to do on Gran Canaria is Palmitos Park . The park consists of five different areas: Birds, The Garden, Aquarium, Reptiles, and Mammals.

In each area are interesting things to see and do, including the Cage of Lories full of colorful birds from around the world; the House of Butterflies, considered the largest in Europe; an Aquarium full of fascinating fish; and the Island of Primates, home to Gibbons and Merkeets among many others.

Palmitos Park also features live animal shows. Two of the most popular are the dolphin shows and birds of prey flight demonstrations. These shows take place twice daily.

Address: Barranco de los Palmitos, s/n, 35109 Maspalomas, Las Palmas, Spain

Crocodile at Crocodrilo Park

As the name suggests, you'll definitely find crocodiles at Cocodrilo Park ; however, the attraction is much more than a collection of these scaly beasts. Inside are hundreds of other animals that have been rescued or nursed back to health.

The park focuses on education but also has live animal shows featuring crocodiles (of course!) but also birds and other critters. The park is laid out in an easy-to-follow pathway past the animal enclosures, highlights include tigers, white foxes, and the ever-so-cute googley-eyed lemurs.

Lemurs at at Crocodrilo Park

The most entertaining part of the pathway is where you walk through a wire tunnel in the bird enclosure. It's here that the birds get up close and personal — and loud! Near the end of the route is a fascinating turtle pond with hundreds of turtles swimming in the current.

Address: Ctra General Los Corralillos, Km 5.5, 35260 Agüimes, Las Palmas, Spain

Playa Puerto Rico

You have to give credit where credit is due. The enterprising Canary Islanders knew they had a good thing going in the far south of Gran Canaria: non-stop sun, crystalline water, and amazing scenery. What they didn't have were beaches. No problem, they said, and they went and created several beautiful ones along this coast. One of the best is Playa Puerto Rico.

An almost perfect arc of imported golden sand greets you as you descend from your mountainside hotel. Thinking ahead, the creators put a large breakwater in the ocean to stop the waves, so the water is calm and safe for swimming. The water in the protected area is shallow and as a result, warms up very nicely, unlike other Gran Canaria beaches that are directly on the ocean.

Restaurants and shops line the walkway at the back of the beach making it easy to grab a bite or cold drink and return to your perfect patch of sand. Chair and umbrella rentals are easily available and are highly recommended as the sun is hot and rarely stops shining.

The large city of Las Palmas is home to a delightful Old Town area known as La Vegeuta. It's a relaxed place to visit, full of buildings dating from the 19th century fronting onto narrow roadways, many of which are pedestrian-only.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

During the day, the historical center of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Vegueta), hums with locals going about their shopping and errands. At night restaurants set up tables in the street, and dining al fresco is the main pastime. Unlike other European city centers that have been gentrified and done up for the throngs of tourists, Vegeuata has a much more authentic feel.

A few of the must-see highlights here include Casa de Colón , a wonderfully restored building well over 500 years old, and the beautiful Catedral de Canarias on vibrant Santa Ana Square . While you are touring, swing by the Vegueta Market , operating since 1863, and home to the island's freshest produce, meats, and cheeses.

Jardin Botanico

One of the best free attractions on Gran Canaria is the Jardin Botanico Viera & Clavijo . This wonderful public space is set in a valley with a small stream running through the middle. The park has pleasant walkways winding their way through and past all kinds of interesting plants, most of which are labeled with their name and origin.

The park has a focus on cacti and features some incredibly large examples of these prickly desert dwellers. Look for them both on the ground and on the cliffs above.

The park is surprisingly large. You may think that you'll pop in for a quick visit, but by the time you walk the length, you may be surprised at how much time has passed.

If you have rented an electric car, a charging station is located in the parking lot.

Address: Carretera del Dragonal Km 7 GC-310, 35017 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain

Casa de Colon

Christopher Columbus' 1492 expedition to the New World set off from Europe, and his final departure point before sailing into the great unknown was the Canary Islands. His presence here was critical in establishing the Canaries as an important stopping point for the transatlantic trade that soon followed.

The Casa de Colon (Columbus is referred to as Colon by the Spanish) museum showcases the voyages of Columbus and also does a nice job of covering the history of the Canary Islands. The building itself, parts of which formed the Governor's house, has been beautifully restored to its former glory.

Address: C. Colón, 1, 35001 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Las Palmas, Spain

Poema del Mar Aquarium

One of Gran Canaria's newest attractions is the Poema del Mar . This bright and airy building was recently opened with much fanfare, and the hoopla was well deserved. This modern aquarium is home to countless fish and sea creatures.

An ideal family thing to do when visiting Gran Canaria, the Poema del Mar has two huge tanks, one of which you can walk through via a glass tunnel. Sitting areas by the glass walls are ideal spots to relax and watch the sharks, turtles, and countless other fish slowly glide by.

In addition to the marine theme, the aquarium also features a rainforest exhibit. An on-site restaurant serves up decent fare. Grab a bite to eat and watch the sea creatures eyeing you or perhaps your lunch!

The Poema del Mar is located near the ferry terminal in Las Palmas.

Address: Av. de Los Consignatarios, s/n, 35008, Las Palmas, Spain

Dolphins off Gran Canaria

The waters around the southern end of Gran Canaria, and the Canary Islands in general, are popular places for dolphins and whales. The fertile seas offer extensive feeding opportunities, and the channels between the islands offer a resting place from the open ocean.

If you can tear yourself from the beach, consider taking a dolphin and whale watching cruise. These popular excursions offer knowledgeable guides who are adept at spotting the sometimes elusive marine creatures. The tours are generally two hours in length.

How to do Gran Canaria in style

By Condé Nast Traveller

Gran Canaria best beaches hotels and things to do | Canary Islands Spain

Gran Canaria is well known for its sensational white-sand beaches and, less appealingly, as a package-holiday destination. But this subtropical Canary Island is a diverse destination with all kinds of little gems, if you know where to look. Las Palmas, the island's capital, has a pretty historical centre and excellent seafood restaurants, and it buzzes day and night. There is peace and quiet away from the holiday crowds in the south-west of island, where the fishing village of Mogán is a scuba diving hub and dolphins play outside the harbour. Hiking trails lead to isolated little beaches , rugged and wild, that the locals would rather keep secret. Most remote of all is Maspalomas, where the epic golden sand dunes sparkle in the year-round sunshine.

Best boutique hotel in Gran Canaria

One for fans of the Ace Hotel look, but without the pretension or even a sniff of skinny-jeaned hipster, Bed and Chic is a cool 12-room hotel in Las Palmas. Book a high-ceilinged junior suite, where large windows let the sunlight flood into the pared-back white-and-grey interiors. Fun additions include fabric artwork clouds floating above headboards and cushions printed with monocled reindeer. It's a five-minute walk to the beach at Playa las Canteras , and the hotel's laid-back rooftop bar is the best place to sink a coconut-laced Papua cocktail and watch the twinkling lights of the Canary Islands ' most vibrant city come to life.

Address: Bed and Chic, General Vives 76, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain Telephone: +34 928 90 42 89 Website: bedandchic.com Price: Doubles from about £85

La Azotea de Benito bar in Las Palmas

Best cocktail bar in Las Palmas

Dusk is the loveliest time to visit Gran Canaria's La Azotea de Benito bar. Take a seat on the rooftop, and watch the volcanic mountains that surround Las Palmas darken as the adjacent cathedral lights up. If it's a little chilly the staff will bring you a blanket to snuggle under as they explain the mixology mindset here. Try the classic Martinez, the predecessor of the Martini, or if you're after something more left-field, ask the bartenders to 'cook you a drink'. The team pride themselves on coming up with off-menu cocktails - they're always delicious but you'll have to twist their arms to find out the secret recipes.

Address: La Azotea de Benito, Plaza Hurtado Mendoza, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain Telephone: +34 928 36 74 50 Website: facebook.com/LazoteadeBenito

Best restaurant in Las Palmas

Japanese cooking might not immediately spring to mind when you think about Gran Canaria. However, Fuji restaurant has been operating here since 1968. Said to be Spain's first Japanese restaurant, it originally served the men from Japan 's tuna-fishing fleet which docked around Muelle de la Luz in the 1970s. Chef Miguel Martínez took over in the 1990s and has been running the place ever since. The decor is rather dusty but it doesn't matter a jot because the food is out of this world: sashimi, home-marinated ginger and perfectly cooked fish. Brave diners should try the traditional cod belly; fishy and pungent, it's not for fussy eaters. There are just 10 tables, it serves lunch and dinner, and is always heavily booked.

Address: Fuji, Calle Fernando Guanarteme 56, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain Telephone: +34 928 26 13 93 Website: restaurantefuji.es Price: About £50 for two

Best country bolthole in Gran Canaria

With its minimal, mid-century aesthetic, super-slick Finca Paraiso is one of the most stylish places to stay on Gran Canaria. This was once a cosy stone house huddled against a remote hillside. Now a smart 21st-century extension has added floor-to-ceiling windows to take in precipitous valley views and created a grown-up hideaway full of design-classic furniture with room to sleep six. Enjoy the view from a rocking chair on the terrace while eating an orange or mango freshly plucked from the tree.

Address: Finca Paraiso, Cercados Espino, Mogán, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain Telephone: +34 928 93 03 98 Website: monotyp.de Price: From £130 per couple per night. Each extra guest costs £35 per night

Best beaches in Gran Canaria

Some people come to Maspalomas for the golf, others for the LGBT-friendly vibe of Playa del Inglés . Yet beyond the bars and nudist beaches, the main draw of Gran Canaria's most southerly region is the dunes - more than 400 hectares of protected rolling hillocks, through which you can wander and make like you're in the Sahara. Until you want a drink that is, and then, handily, it's only a few steps to the beachfront kiosks for an icy rum cocktail.

The best time to visit Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is warm and sunny all year round; the hottest summer months run from June to October, but it's never unbearably hot or humid thanks to the sea breeze. We love October , November and March in Gran Canaria, for quieter beaches and out-of-season sunshine not far from home.

50+ Spectacular Things to do in Canary Islands, Spain

L ast month I visited Gran Canaria, one of Spain’s Canary Islands and became very curios about the islands as a whole. The next time I visit Spain, I’d love to explore more of the Canary Islands and as I started to research each island, I realized it might be best to ask a few travel blogging friends who have visited the other 7 islands to find the best canary island for my (or your) next island vacation.

Below are their tips and suggestions for the best things to do on each of the Canary Islands .

The 8 Canary Islands

There are eight main Canary Islands, the largest island of the archipelago is Tenerife, followed by Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and the smallest is La Graciosa.

The Islas Canarias also known as the Canary Islands are located just 67 miles (108 km) off the northwest African mainland just west of Morocco and Western Sahara.

50+ Best things to do in Canary Islands, Spain

Best things to do in gran canaria.

Gran Canaria is a beautiful island with plenty to offer tourists, from stunning beaches and lush landscapes to vibrant cities and historic towns. Here are my favorite things I did when I visited Gran Canaria .

Visit the Maspalomas Dunes

The Maspalomas Dunes are a vast and impressive natural wonder, and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Gran Canaria. The dunes stretch for over 6 kilometers along the coast, and can reach heights of up to 30 meters.

Hike to Roque Nublo (or at least a viewpoint to see it)

Roque Nublo is a volcanic rock formation that is one of the most iconic landmarks in Gran Canaria. The hike to the top of the rock is challenging but rewarding, and the views from the summit are stunning.

Visit the Capital City of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

The capital city offers a mix of historical and modern attractions. Visit the historic district of Vegueta with its colonial architecture, explore the Cathedral of Santa Ana, and stroll along the vibrant Las Canteras Beach.

Puerto de Mogán

Often referred to as “Little Venice,” Puerto de Mogán is a picturesque fishing village with canals, bridges, and colorful buildings. The marina, beach, and local market make it a charming and relaxing destination.

Visit a Winery

Nestled in Santa Brígida, the village famed for its wine and flowers, Finca Escudero, owned by Juan Escudero, offers wine tastings and property tours by appointment. My visit included sampling Marmajuelo and two reds: the 2020 Tempranillo, El Selección, aged in oak barrels, and the fresh vintage called Joven. While there you can also explore the the grove of olive trees, grapevines, and beautiful gardens.

Eat the Local Specialties!

Try Everything… especially the fresh fish and Papas Arrugadas with Mojo.

At the Mercado del Puerto, pinchos are a go-to treat – bite-sized delights featuring bread adorned with veggies, meats, and cheeses. My market exploration led me to Piscos y Buches, where we savored a spread of dishes: pinchos, chicken specialties, salads, local cheeses, and fresh fish.

Fun Things to do in Fuerteventura

These tips are from Susan with Gen X Traveler and photos are from Fuerte Photo Tour .

The second largest and least developed of the Canary Islands, it is sometimes joked that “Fuerteventura has more goats than people.” While this may or may not be accurate, the landscape of this volcanic island is more like landing on Mars than it is like Hawaii.

Though marked by vast areas of sand dunes and volcanic craters, watersports such as surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing as well as its diverse beaches are the draw to Fuerteventura.

Explore Corralejo

Visit corralejo.

The resort area of Corralejo is a  popular island resort  area with plenty of shopping, restaurants, and nightlife and the famous sand dunes that were declared a Parque Natural in 1982 and is protected along with Isla de Lobos which can be seen in the distance of the above photo. Remember those goats that there are so many of on Fuerteventura? They are a popular and traditional menu item.

Drive to Lajares

A drive around the island reveals wonderful villages, each with their own distinct flavor. Lajares is a laidback surf village with a few shops and restaurants, but the main draw is the beaches and the surfing. Hidden a good distance from the main road on the west side of the island is Ajuy. This cool little town with black sandy beaches and colorful buildings.

Visit El Cotillo

El Cotillo is situated on a harbor on the northwest side of the island. This little fishing village is the place to go if you are looking for a fresh seafood dinner. Inland and more central on the island is Betancuria. A historic and cultural center this village visibly reflects the island’s Spanish influences.

Drive Around the Entire Island in a Day

FV-30 is the primary road that wraps around the island. The entire distance is only 19 miles (31km), meaning that visitors can see the entire island in a day but taking day trips to the various beaches and villages is a better way to experience this unique island.

Visit Lobos Island

Take a day trip by ferry to tiny Lobos Island which is part of Fuerteventura. Located 20 minutes away by water taxi, Lobos Island is a protected Nature Preserve and requires a permit to visit.

Because of its protected status, there aren’t accommodations, but it is delightful for a day trip. Rent bicycles and pedal to the Punta Martiño Lighthouse or kayak and snorkel along the island’s coast. Hikers can make their way to the summit of Caldera Mountain for scenic 360 views.

Check out the Windmills

Perhaps one of the oddest things you will see on Fuerteventura is the windmills that are scattered around the island. Known as ‘molinos’ they once utilized the island’s abundant wind power to mill grain.

Today, the island’s otherworldly and diverse terrain makes it a popular filming location for movies including blockbusters like Solo: A Star Wars Story, Wonder Woman 1984, and Marvel’s The Eternals.

Best Things to do in Tenerife

These tips and photos are from Avantika with Venture & Gain.

Tenerife is the largest island in the Canaries and its most visited.

Of all the islands, Tenerife has the most interesting combination of activities and natural landscapes like volcanic peaks, laurel forests, gigantic cliffs, and thousand-year-old dragon trees to explore. Besides its amazing year-round weather and black, red, and white sand beaches, Tenerife has much to offer. Here are 6 things to do in Tenerife:

Spend a day (or more) in El Teide National Park – Spain’s Highest Peak

You can reach the summit via cable car or hiking (advance permits required). Bring plenty of sunscreen and spend the day exploring the vastly differing landscapes that comprise El Teide National Park from widespread lava flows, pumice areas, volcanic cones, and more.

Hike in Anaga National Park & visit La Laguna, both of which are UNESCO sites

For an otherworldly, lush, and green landscape totally different from El Teide, visit Anaga National Park. It’s full of laurel trees, the home to the largest number of endemic species in Europe, and jaw-dropping viewpoints as you make your way up via car or hike.

Try the Local Cuisine (Yes, It’s Different from Mainland Spain)

Because the Canary Islands are so far from mainland Spain (they’re actually closer to North Africa), the cuisine here is also vastly different. Foods to sample include Mojo (various sauces served as side dishes in Tenerife), local goat cheese, gofio, and papas arrugadas.

Go Dolphin and Whale-Watching in Los Gigantes

The basalt cliffs of Los Gigantes cannot be missed. These stunning cliffs can be viewed from the water or explored on top via hiking. Guests can also find secluded, hidden beaches amongst the cliffs, some only accessible by boat. Guests should use a sustainable tour operator and go whale and dolphin-watching, including the famous pilot whale! It doesn’t hurt to consider kayaking and paddleboarding (but please don’t rent a jet ski – these negatively affect the wildlife, whales & dolphins).

Don’t Forget About Canarian Wine!

Did you know that the Canary Islands are famous for its volcano-rich wine? Thanks to Tenerife’s unique climate, volcanoes, and geology, the vines have grown across mineral-rich soils and are still harvested by hand. The wine is dry, acidic, and easy to drink, winning numerous global competitions. You can also visit wineries and do tastings.

Go Kite-Surfing in El Medano Beach

El Medano, a Blue Flag Beach in Europe, is considered to be a prime kite surfing destination!

Just next door, you can also visit the undeveloped Tejitahike Beach and hike the dormant Montana Roja volcano.

If you’re considering another sustainable location with rare and untouched geology, consider a  trip off-the-beaten path to Ecuador .

Best Things to do La Gomera

These tips and photos are from Pilar with Travel the World Pages.

La Gomera is the hidden gem of the Canary islands. The island is located just one hour by boat from the most busy beaches in Tenerife, however it has managed to stay out of the main tourists circuits.

From its deep enchanting ravines, to the lush Laurisilva forests of the Garajonay national park, its wild coastal cliffs and beaches and its archeological aboriginal sites, the Colombian island (Christopher Columbus stopped here on the island on the way to discover America ) is the perfect place to unplug and revive the spirit.

Take a Hike

La Gomera is the top hiking destination in the Canary Islands and one of the best hiking destinations in Spain. Hiking in La Gomera is an invigorating endeavor where solitude and breathtaking landscapes intertwine.

Some of the best hiking trails are located in the World UNESCO heritage site, the Garajonay National Park : a prehistoric laurisilva forest where nature meets magic, as you can find some ancient “Guanches” ritual sites.

Visit Los Organos

Los Organos is an impressive coastal geological formation formed by hexagonal basalt columns that resemble the pipes of a massive organ.

This 20 million years old natural wonder is only accessible by boat on a prearranged tour, in which most likely you will be able to spot dolphins and whales.

Taste Almogorote

This is a cheese paste that is traditionally made in “La Gomera”. Youcan taste this local delicacy in every traditional restaurant on the island. Taste is with some wine and bread for a starter before your meal.

Eat “Watercress soup”

“Watercress soup” is one of the top traditional dishes in the island and you will not want to leave before giving it a try. “Bar camping restaurant La Vista” serves the best one in the island and it is a very good idea to combine it with your “Hermigua – El Cedro” hike.

Witness “El Silbo Gomero”

This whistling language is an ancient language that was used to communicate across deep valleys and ravines across long distances in the island. You can request a demonstration in advance with the tourism office or find out which local restaurant is offering a show when you visit the island.

Visit the Village of Agulo

This village was chosen by the newspaper “The Times” as the most beautiful village in Spain. The village is gorgeous and on clear days boasts a majestic view over “El Teide”.

Best Things to do in Lanzarote

These tips and photos are from Sira with Serentravelty

Whenever I travel, I love to look for some special places that aren’t necessarily the most popular attractions. I even regularly look for secret spots in Barcelona , the city where I live, because I think there’s nothing better than exploring the most authentic hidden gems of the place you’re in – whether you live there or you’re just traveling. Without further ado, here are some of the best, most unique things you can do in Lanzarote.

Go to the Playa Flamingo Viewpoint

Playa Flamingo is my favorite beach in Lanzarote. It’s situated in Playa Blanca, a town in the south of the island, and its viewpoint – in Spanish: El Mirador de Playa Flamingo – is one of its best spots you can’t miss. As you can see in the picture, there are thousands of colorful love padlocks; in this place, it’s tradition for couples – or even groups of friends – to put a lock with their initials or a meaningful message engraved in it.

Walk from Playa Flamingo to the Punta Pechiguera Lighthouse

If you like taking long walks, going to the Punta Pechiguera Lighthouse from Playa Flamingo is one of the best things you can do.

On your way to the lighthouse, you will find several small beaches, and believe me, it’s worth stopping at least in one of these charming spots for at least a few minutes and enjoying the sound and the smell of the ocean.

Climb the Montaña Roja (The Red Mountain)

Not too far from Playa Flamingo, there is a small mountain, la Montaña Roja, that you can easily climb in less than half an hour. Once you reach the top, the view is simply breathtaking.

Tip : Keep in mind that since it’s very close to the coast, most of the time the place tends to be very windy, so make sure you bring a sweater with you; if you wear a hat, make sure it’s securely fastened to your head to prevent it from flying away (yes, it happened to me).

Don’t Miss the Jameos del Agua

Trust me, you can’t leave the island without having seen this place. Jameos del Agua is a unique place in the northern area of Lanzarote that you can visit for just €14. And it’s one of the most Instagrammable places on the island. Basically, it’s a group of small semi-submerged volcanic caves within a cultural and touristic center designed and created by the architect César Manrique.

Interesting fact : The word “jameo” describes a cavity naturally created when the roof of a volcanic tube collapses.

Visit the Charco de San Ginés

The Charco de San Ginés is a small lagoon in the heart of Arrecife, the main city of Lanzarote. And it’s one of the most unique places you can see on the island. My personal recommendation is to go there to either enjoy the sunrise or the sunset.

If you go there early in the morning to see the sunrise, you will also be able to enjoy the place without too many tourists. If you go there to see the sunset, there will probably be more people, however, on a sunny day, you’ll be able to take some amazing photos.

The Teguise Market

If you’re in Lanzarote during the weekend, make sure to visit the Teguise market. You can find it in the town of Teguise, in the north, every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. In the market, you’ll find a bit of everything, from clothing and hand-craft jewelry to local art, and even aloe vera natural products.

Tip : If you’re a hiking enthusiast, from the center of this small town you can even explore some beautiful hiking trails.

Fun Things to do in La Graciosa

These tips and photos are from Nadine with Le Long Weekend.

The tiny island of La Graciosa offers an escape from the modern world. With sand-strewn streets and stunning beaches, it’s a world away from the more tourist-centric Canary Islands.

Located in the Chinijo Archipelago, it’s a volcanic island that’s ideal for nature lovers. To get there, you’ll need to take a ferry  from nearby Lanzarote , and then hire a bicycle to explore, as the only vehicles allowed on the island are those owned by the small number of locals.

Head to a Beach

Set off on the trails to explore the island’s shoreline. Playa de las Conchas is the most famous, and arguably most beautiful beach. Located on the opposite side of the island to where you’ll arrive on the ferry, it’s a good place to start a tour. Stop for a refreshing swim, or, if too windy (the seas can be rough), just enjoy the spectacular scene.

Climb Mt. Bermeja

Afterwards, climb Mt. Bermeja to see the coastline from above. It’s a short but steep hike, but the views make it worth the effort.

Bike to Pedro Barba

Cycle around the northern tip of the island until you come to Pedro Barba, a tiny settlement characterized by charming whitewashed houses and colorful cactus gardens. If you’ve worked up a sweat again, stop by Barranco De Los Conejos on your way back to the main town for a splash.

Enjoy the Local Cuisine

Arriving back in charming village of Caleta del Sebo, make time to sample the island’s fresh cuisine at one of the understated restaurants. Try  papas arrugadas con mojo,  a local take on patatas bravas, with the catch of the day.

Go on a Snorkel or Dive Trip

If you have more time in La Graciosa, book a diving lesson or snorkeling tour, as the island’s vibrant underwater world deserves to be explored too.

Additional popular attractions on La Graciosa include:

  • Playa de los Franceses:  This stunning beach is located on the southern coast of the island and is known for its white sand, turquoise waters, and dramatic views of the Risco de Famara cliffs.
  • Playa del Salado:  This beach is located on the western coast of the island and is known for its calm waters and golden sand. It is a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing, and windsurfing.
  • El Mirador del Río:  This viewpoint offers panoramic views of La Graciosa, the Chinijo Archipelago, and Lanzarote.

Best Things to do in La Palma

These tips are from Samara at Spain Awaits who lived on La Palma for 6 months.

If you’re in the Canary Islands, stopping in La Palma is a must. As the

northernmost island in the archipelago, it’s the “greenest” of them all

and is simply spectacular.

Visit The Charco Azul

Step off the black sand beaches for a bit and take a dip in the natural

seawater swimming pools the island has to offer. The Charco Azul on the coast of San Andres is especially breathtaking. This large natural pool has crystal clear waters and is protected from the waves of the

Atlantic. There’s also a small waterfall, a children’s pool, parking,

bathrooms, and lounge chair rentals.

Los Tilos Forest

A great activity for nature lovers is to visit the Los Tilos forest.

This is one of the largest laurel forests in all of the Canary Islands

and was named a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1983. It feels very much like a tropical rainforest with very tall laurel trees and lots of

unique, native vegetation, and you can even bathe under its natural

waterfalls.

Try the Local Wine

When you’re on the island, you’ll want to try the local wine, so look

for wines with a DO La Palma certification. And while there are

wonderful reds and whites, try the Vinos de Tea for something different.

These are bottled directly from heartwood barrels and have an intense

aroma and flavor, specifically of resin.

Another unique wine you can try is one of the traditional dessert wines

on the island, made from Malvasía grapes. These singular wines were

referenced in Shakespeare’s works and are the perfect sweet wines with which to end a meal or to sip on a terrace in the evening.

Sample Palmero Cheese

A product that is wholly from La Palma is Palmero cheese. It also has a

certification to guarantee its authenticity, so look for the DO Queso

Palmero seal. This delicious cheese is made with the milk from a breed

of goat that is native to the island of La Palma. This cheese has won

countless awards, and once you try it—fresh or grilled—you’ll understand

Try Chicharrones

Another unique flavor of La Palma is chicharrones. These are essentially pork scratchings, but on this island, they sprinkle them with gofío, a flour typical of the Canaries. This dish reflects Spaniards’ desire to use every part of a pig after it’s slaughtered and is generally

considered a delicious side dish or appetizer.

Best Things to do in El Hierro

Nicknamed Isla del Meridiano, El Hierro is the farthest south and west of the Canary Islands. It is also the second-smallest of the eight main islands of the Canaries, measuring less than 50 kilometers from one end to the other. Despite its small size, El Hierro has a lot to offer visitors.

El Golfo Depression

The El Golfo depression is a stunning natural amphitheater created by a massive volcanic collapse over 50,000 years ago. The depression is home to a variety of plant and animal life, including the rare El Hierro giant lizard.

Orchilla Lighthouse

The Orchilla lighthouse is the westernmost point of Spain. It is a popular tourist destination, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.

La Maceta is a series of three natural pools located on the west coast of the island. The pools are protected from the waves, making them a perfect spot for swimming and sunbathing.

Volcanic Tube of Guinea

The volcanic tube of Guinea is a 1,000-meter-long lava tube that was formed by a volcanic eruption over 100,000 years ago. The tube is home to a variety of bats and other wildlife.

Additional Things to Do

In addition to the four things listed above, there are many other things to do in El Hierro, including:

  • Whale watching:  Whales can be seen off the coast of El Hierro throughout the year.
  • Stargazing:  El Hierro is one of the best places in the world to stargaze.

How to Choose Which of the Canary Islands to Visit for Your Holiday

So, which is the best Canary Island for you?

It really depends on your interests and what you’re looking for in a vacation. If you’re looking for a lively island with plenty of things to see and do, Tenerife or Gran Canaria would be a good choice. If you’re looking for a more relaxed and authentic island experience, Lanzarote or La Palma would be a good option. If you’re looking for an active island experience, La Gomera is a great choice. And if you’re looking for a truly off-the-beaten-path experience, El Hierro is the place for you.

The Easiest Way to Get to the Canary Islands

Flights from the Spanish mainland take close to three hours and most flights from the United States will take you to Madrid where you will have a change of planes and fly to your island of choice.

Can you take a boat from Spain to the Canary Islands?

Yes. The fastest ferry from Spain to Gran Canaria is from Huelva to Las Palmas, with a crossing time of about 8.5 hours. The fastest ferry from Spain to Tenerife is from Huelva to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with a crossing time of approximately 7.5 hours.

How many days are enough for Canary Islands?

We recommend at least 3-4 days per island. If you are visiting more than 3 islands we recommend you plan for at least 1 week to 10 days.

What is the best month to go to the Canary Islands?

The Canary Islands have a sub tropical climate that offers sunshine throughout the year. The warmest months are between June and September.

No matter which Canary Island you choose, you’re sure to have a wonderful time. These islands offer something for everyone, from stunning scenery and beautiful beaches to world-class wines and vibrant culture.

best towns to visit gran canaria

5 replies to this topic

' class=

It appears to be right next to Santa Catalina bus station so, if I recall correctly, there are a couple of quick buses from the airport.

best towns to visit gran canaria

"Nice" towns to visit:- Arucas, Firgas, Gáldar, Agaete. Walking routes :- Valsequillo waterfalls walk, Bandama Caldera rim circuit.

' class=

Just to add, Teror is also a nice town to visit.

Terór has a noted Sunday market. If you go don't miss the local speciality; chorizo de terór.

Another possible walk is to head south down Canteras beach, past Alfredo Kraus and Arenas mall, and up to the Atlante sculpture viewpoint. Last part of walk is not that serene though, as the path is between the GC-2 highway and the Atlantic.
