Saadani Safari Lodge

Saadani Safari Lodge is a unique combination of a beach and safari lodge, located in the little-visited Saadani National Park on Tanzania's mainland coast, among the only safari parks in East Africa to enjoy direct beach access.

Saadani is that most unique of combinations, both safari lodge and beach retreat. It is located in the small, often-overlooked Saadani National Park, one of the only safari parks in East Africa to enjoy direct access to the coast. The park is small and doesn't exactly offer a big 5 experience, but you can expect to see elephant (sometimes right on the beach by the ocean), hippo, crocodile, giraffe and zebra - and lion if you're very lucky! Of course, the game-viewing experience here doesn't begin to rival that to be had in Tanzania's more famous safari parks, but it does offer a totally unique opportunity to combine bush and beach.

Saadani Safari Lodge is located right on the sands, its fifteen tented chalets situated on the edge of the beach overlooking the Indian Ocean. At the centre of the lodge is a bar and dining area built on stilts and covered with grass thatch—the views of the coast from here are stunning. There's a large pool with loungers and, closer to the beach, a small bar carved out of an old boat. The very definition of rustic beach chic, Saadani is stylish but not overly glitzy.

Saadani is a better beach lodge than it is a safari lodge. While the game-viewing experience is limited, the beach at Saadani is beautiful and receives almost no visitors other than the lodge guests and the local fishermen. Nestled in a horse shoe bay, the waters are calm and great for swimming. This wonderful location comes at a cost, of course, but for those who want to escape the busy beach retreats of Zanzibar, we think Saadani is worth the money.

Those without time to enjoy a longer safari in one of Tanzania's more impressive safari parks (Selous and Ruaha are within relatively easy reach of Saadani) will also appreciate the variety of game activities on offer at Saadani—game drives, river boat safaris and limited walking safaris are all on offer. On the coast, dolphin spotting and turtle watching (June to Sept) ensure wildlife lovers will be kept busy.

Accommodation

Saadani Safari Lodge is an exclusive retreat, with just fifteen tented chalets scattered along the beach, where they enjoy the gentle sea breeze and the cool shade provided by sheoak trees. Like Saadani itself, these rooms are a clever bend of beach and safari-style accommodation, their canvas walls recalling classic safari tents, but their romantic Swahili carved furniture and Zanzibar beds, and the swathes of sail cloth that line the ceilings, adding to the rustic beach ambience. It's a combination that works. The rooms are Saadani are beautifully furnished and wonderfully comfortable. They are also very spacious.

Saadani Safari Lodge was originally a nine-room lodge. It has recently expanded and there are now six additional rooms: five Maridadi Suites, and the luxurious Siri suite. The Maridadi suites are larger than the standard chalets and are built directly on the beach on raised stilts. They have private balconies with wonderful views. The Siri suite is a lavish honeymooner's suite, located in a secluded location ('Siri' means secret in Swahili) on top of a sand dune, at some distance from the other rooms. It's huge, beautifully furnished, and enjoys its own dedicated chef and butler, private plunge pool, private boat and beach access.

Saadani also offers al fresco beds, positioned on the beach front verandah, allowing you to sleep under the stars.

Saadani offers fixed menus, with lots of fresh local produce and, of course, lots of seafood. Meals are typically served in the raised dining area, which enjoys wonderful views of the beach and ocean on one side and the bush on the other, but you may prefer to dine privately in your room or on the beach.

- Swimming pool - Dining area - Lounge - Viewing deck

- Game drives - Nature and beach walks - Snorkelling - Water sports - Turtle and dolphin watching - No diving

Child Policy

Saadani Safari Lodge does not accept children under the age of six. Child minding facilities are available at the lodge for those travelling with older children.

The larger Maridadi suites can be converted into family units.

Environmental Policy

Saadani supports a turtle conservation project that helps to protect the turtles that nest on this part of the coast. You'll be able to learn more about the project during your visit.

Saadani Safari Lodge

Saadani Safari Lodge offers a safari on the beach. It is located on the southern border of Tanzania’s Saadani National Park, where the Wami River enters the warm Indian Ocean.  Stay in rustic thatched suites which are backed by the African bush and overlook the ocean. It's an ideal add-on to a Tanzanian safari. It will slow the pace somewhat, offering gentle game viewing on drives and river boats, combined with a tranquil beach setting.

There are 9 eco-friendly classic banda rooms, stretching along the sandy beach and offering magnificent ocean views from the day beds on the full-length veranda. There you can even request to have made up for the night for sleeping under the stars. The 5 maridadi suites have an additional outdoor shower and sitting room and are perched on stilts directly on the beach. All the rooms feature locally carved furniture made from coconut and driftwood. They are simple but elegant with grass roofs, wooden floors, and Zanzibari-style beds. The lodge’s main area has beach views and is perched on stilts with a bar and restaurant. There’s also a quirky boat bar, an infinity swimming pool, and a yoga deck. The camp has a laid back and sociable atmosphere particularly in the evenings when you will join other guests for drinks around the campfire to admire the sunset. When you are not out on a game drive, you can go swimming or snorkelling in the ocean, take a walking tour to the local village or enjoy a boat trip along the Wami river to see pods of hippo and basking crocodiles. It’s very much a barefoot paradise in a truly secluded setting.

  • Beach and safari in one
  • River boating past crocodiles and pods of hippos
  • Golden beaches, azure ocean, and savannah plains
  • Easily combined with Selous, Ruaha and Zanzibar

Sitting on the beach under the fringes of the casuarina trees are the 9 original Classic Bandas , which are simple but elegant, with wooden frames supporting grass roofs. Polished wooden floors and swathes of white cloth create a bright and airy feel, with large Zanzibar-style carved beds (double or twin) surrounded with romantic nets, and chunky, sun-bleached wooden furniture. Each banda has an ensuite bathroom with solar-heated shower, livened up by sand floors, shell mosaics and the odd fist of driftwood. You also have a full-length veranda , with unrestricted sea views. The Bandas have a daybed out here, which can be made up if you fancy sleeping alfresco under the star-splashed skies. Five standalone Maridadi Suites (Swahili for elegant) are perched on short stilts directly on the beach and close to the newest-built pool and restaurant. A teak-wood balcony runs around the outside of each, with a couple of cushioned steamer chairs. Inside, under a thick thatch roof, is a stylish 4-poster double bed of chunky dhow wood; there's also a desk, a sitting area and an indoor shower bathroom as well as an outdoor courtyard shower room. Two of these connect, via a shared lounge area, to create a generous family suite for 4-5 , with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

Features include:

  • Mosquito net

Meals are served in the spacious restaurant, set on stilts above the beach with amazing views of the Indian Ocean and a deliciously cooling breeze. Menus are fixed (and all included in your tariff) but can take account of your dietary preferences so long as you tell the lodge managers in advance. Unsurprisingly the focus is on fresh seafood , including feasts of prawns which are netted every day; these, served with a juicy tomato and avocado salad, could do me for weeks! But there's also a strong Indian influence - think chicken coconut curries, crunchy vegetable samosas - and some European standards like succulent beef with potatoes, along with my favourite: spiced banana cake for dessert. Whatever your daily programme, you're well looked after with picnic lunches, afternoon tea and coffee at the treehouse and, at sunset, passion fruit cocktails around the beach bonfire. In the morning , tea, coffee and fresh juice are brought to your veranda at dawn so you can come to gently before setting off on a game drive - or tucking into a full breakfast.

SAADANI SAFARI LODGE - Prices & Reviews (Saadani National Park, Tanzania)

Saadani Safari Lodge

Saadani Safari Lodge, Location

Saadani Safari Lodge is located in the Saadani area.

Saadani Safari Lodge is located in the Saadani area of the Tanzania Coast.

Saadani is the only reserve in East Africa which offers the classic "bush and beach" combination in the same location.

Despite its accessible location, Saadani feels surprisingly remote and visitor numbers remain stubbornly low, with as few as 500 international travellers each year, less than 0.5% of the number of people who visit the Serengeti and less than 0.25% of the number of people who visit Zanzibar.

The area very much retains a frontier type of atmosphere, with only a handful of quirky owner-operated lodges, very few vehicles on its network of sandy tracks, broad empty beaches and authentic villages full of friendly faces.

Saadani National Park is an important conservation project, being an ecosystem of extremely high botanical diversity and one of the last remaining coastal forests in Tanzania.

The area first came under governmental protection in 1969, when the elders of Saadani village were consulted and compensation was agreed for their loss of cultivated land before the reserve was first declared.

In 1996 the area really started to take on national significance when it was increased fivefold in size to just over 1062 square kilometres. It was finally gazetted as a national park in 2005, encompassing former preserved ecosystems in the Mkwaja Ranch area, the Wami River as well as the Zaraninge Forest.

Although Saadani is now a decent chunk of land, it remains only 7% the size of Serengeti.

It is the only area of Tanzania where significant wildlife populations exist along the coast. But increasingly it has come under pressure, as local people seek to build fishing villages along the beaches and clear the land for cultivation. Serious efforts have been put into anti-poaching and the local villages have been very much encouraged to participate in conservation efforts.

But what Saadani National Park needs more than anything else is to generate revenue from these conservation efforts. The parks authority needs to earn an income from all the investment and the local villagers need to see a return for their co-operation and sacrifice.

By simply visiting the reserve you are making a significant contribution to this revenue stream. If you want to go a step further then you can visit villages, participate in or financially support community and conservation projects. Everything is so small scale in here that it is really possible to make an impact.

Most of the lodges in this area are able to offer an unusually broad range of activities including vehicle safari, motorboat safari, kayaking, walking safari, ocean safari, mountain-biking and cultural visits.

Set on the back of the beach inside the national park in the Saadani area of the Tanzania Coast, Saadani Safari Lodge is the original accommodation in this area and remains the best by a distance, with guest accommodation in 15 rooms and offering a wide range of guided safari, marine and cultural activities.

Getting there

The property is accessed by scheduled flight into Saadani Airstrip, with connections from Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam.

From there it is a road transfer of 20 minutes to the lodge.

We usually include all the connecting transport for your trip unless  you specifically ask us not to.

Saadani Safari Lodge, Lodge

The lodge is centred on a cluster of thatched buildings at the back of the beach.

Saadani Safari Lodge, Lodge Image 1

After many years under private ownership, Saadani Safari Lodge was taken over in 2015 by Sanctuary Lodges, a company which was created to manage the properties previously owned by Abercrombie and Kent.

However we understand that this relationship has come to an end and we await news on the new ownership and management situation.

Lodge notes

As the original lodge in the area, it it in a prime location, the only accommodation which is both inside the reserve and on the beach.

Arriving into the vehicle turnaround, we first pass through a reception building and then pass along shaded walkways to the main areas, where comfortable lounge areas extend out to provide views over the beach and ocean. To one side there is a decent swimming pool, also above the beach. A separate dining area is set further back.

Guest accommodation is in a total of 15 rooms, all of which are timber frames under thatch, with canvas walls. They are also all along the back of the beach ...

The nine Classic Bandas are slightly smaller, but perfectly comfortable.

The five Maridadi Suites are slightly larger and have outdoor bathrooms.

The one Siri Suite is much larger, has its own small pool and a private dining room, so tends to be recommended for honeymooners.

Dining options

The food service at Saadani Safari Lodge is usually pretty good, of the 'home-cooked' variety, rather than anything 'haute cuisine', but with some fabulous fresh seafood of course.

Meals are usually served at separate tables in conventional restaurant style.

Special diets such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher and other variations should not be a problem, so long as you let us know at the time of booking.

Power and connectivity

Child policy

There is no minimum age at this property.

Although the staff will naturally try to tailor the experience to suit all guests, children are ultimately obliged to behave with due consideration for other guests.

Tipping guide

In Africa tipping is definitely not obligatory, but it is commonplace. If you feel that the service provided has been excellent, then you may consider giving tips as follows ...

Lead guide : USD 10 per guest per day Assistant guide : USD 5 per guest per day General staff tip box : USD 5 per guest per day

Staff understand that guests of different nationalities come very different tipping cultures and adjust their expectations accordingly, so you really should tip as you feel comfortable.

Tips are usually given in cash, USD, EUR, GBP and ZAR being the most common currencies. If you are running short of cash or prefer not to carry so much currency, it is often possible to settle tips by bank card.

Saadani Safari Lodge, Maridadi Suite

Guest accommodation is in four Maridadi Suites ...

Saadani Safari Lodge, Activities

Activities include modest vehicle safari, motorboat safari, walking safari and cultural interaction.

Saadani Safari Lodge provides access to a good range of activities ...

Vehicle safari

It is important to realise that the wildlife numbers here in Saadani, although improving, remain relatively low.

You are unlikely to see any major predators, the lions and leopards are very shy, whilst other wildlife such as elephants, zebras, wildebeest and kudus are also skittish.

A vehicle safari here can be very pleasant, but it is unlikely to be very action-packed.

Motorboat safari

It is possible to enter the mouth of the Wami River by boat and explore its meandering path inland, a good chance to see hippos, crocodiles and various bird-life.

Walking safari

This is a really good area for walking. There may not be many opportunities to approach wildlife, but there are some very interesting areas to walk through, notably the acacia and evergreen forests.

Ocean safari

The lodge offers motorboat trips out to an idyllic sandy atoll which exposes at low tide, where it is possible to go swimming and snorkelling in the crystal clear waters. It is quite common to spot various types of dolphins and turtles out here. A picnic lunch is usually included.

Mountain-biking

It may be possible to go out on mountain bikes, usually to a local village.

Microlight safari

Over the years micro-light safaris have been intermittently possible here. It is not to be relied upon, but could easily be the best activity of all if it happens to be available.

Cultural visits

Visitors are invited to visit local villages and can expect a warm welcome.

You may choose to simply stroll through the village with a guide and interact casually with people on the street, or you may wish to visit a school or a community project. I

It may also be possible to visit a traditional healer, witness traditional dance performances, experience some traditional story-telling or be guided around the modest nineteenth century ruins.

Saadani National Park (NP) is a 410 sq. mile wildlife sanctuary in East Africa, the only park in Tanzania with an Indian Ocean beachfront with elephants and Swahili fishermen on view.

Guests visiting the park can enjoy a unique wildlife experience in this national park, which was a game reserve up until 2005, enjoying sunbathing on the beach watching elephants strolling past and animals drinking at the nearby waterhole.

Why visit Saadani National Park?

Safari at saadani national park .

The unusual mix of this park with the salt flats, Indian ocean, white sand beaches, marine park, river and mangrove makes this an incredibly diverse and special place which can be explored by car, on foot and by boat.

A boat safari here at Saadani NP is something to behold and never fails to please visitors. Guests can enjoy a picnic lunch amongst fantastic big game mammals, hippo pods and crocodiles lounging on the banks of the Wami river.

The game drives are always from 6am to 5pm with game viewing mostly done on the Want River. Primates like the white and black colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys are often seen.

A safari guest can relish the palm trees as they sway in a cooling oceanic breeze. White sand and blue water sparkle alluringly beneath the tropical sun, a magical combination.

Traditional dhows sail slowly past, propelled by billowing white sails, whilst Swahili fishermen cast their nets below a brilliant red sunrise.

Another highlight of this safari is its location, a park on the safari circuit yet one of the most untouched natural resources of Tanzania ,  off the beaten track and away from the crowds of tourists and the sound of other safari vehicles.

saadani national park saadani safari lodge

The park is home to about 30 species of large mammals including lions and huge herds of elephants that move together, making for spectacular viewing for visitors.

In addition, there are sizable numbers of buffalo, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck, yellow baboons, hippos as well as smaller antelope such as red duike and bushbuck.

Expanding the diversity of this park further is the Madete marine park which forms part of the park and is home to the endangered green turtle. The best time for hatchlings is July through to September.

Truly a wonderful thing to witness, the baby turtles hatch and immediately take to the enormous Indian ocean.

Large mangrove forests grow along the Wami River, a place that attracts large mammals. At night, hippos come ashore and wander inland, each grazing up to 40 kg of grass. The Nile crocodiles also live here, some of them reaching 5 meters long.

Saadani offers excellent birding in a variety of habitats. Boat trips on the mangrove-lined Wami River offer a good selection of marine and riverine birds, including the mangrove kingfisher, lesser flamingo, fish eagles and many species of wading birds.

The interior of the park is great for seeing some of the grassland species, and a variety of raptors such as bateleur and crowned eagle. Other birds on display include the African fish eagle, goliath heron and lesser flamingo.

Tanzania Parks Adventure

Saadani National Park

Introduction.

Located in the centre of the historic triangle of Bagamoyo, Pangani and Zanzibar, Saadani National Park covers 1100km square. It is the only wildlife sanctuary in Tanzania bordering the sea. The climate is coastal, hot and humid. It offers a unique combination of both marine and mainland flora and fauna in a culturally fascinating setting. About 30 species of larger mammals are present as well as numerous reptiles and birds. Besides many species of fish (over 40), green turtles, humpback whales and dolphins occur in the ocean nearby

Gazetted in 2005, it encompasses a preserved ecosystem including the former Saadani game reserve, the former Mkwaja ranch area, the Wami River as well as the Zaraninge Forest. Many villages exist around the boundaries of the park. Before being included in the national park, the Zaraninge forest was managed by the World Wide Fund for nature (WWF) whose goal was to preserve the extremely high botanical diversity of one of the last coastal rain forests remaining   in Tanzania.

HISTORY AND CULTURE

Saadani village once was an important harbour-town and slave trading centre in east Africa. Now it is a small Swahili fishing village with about 800 inhabitants whose livelihood is mostly fishing. Other villages adjacent to the park make their living through farming, especially coconut growing.

After periods of Portuguese and Arab domination, the region gained importance in 18th and 19th centuries following a rising international demand for ivory and slaves. The actual Saadani village emerged with towns like Bagamoyo and Pangani as new trading centers connecting Zanzibar with long-distance trade routes from Tabora. At the end of the 19th century, Bwana Heri bin Juma was ruling Saadani. In oral tradition he is the mythological founder-hero of the village as he resisted all Zanzibari attempts to occupy the town and defeated the sultan`s troops in 1882. In 1886 the German protectorate`s borders were established. Two years later, the coastal people organized resistance against the Germans under the joint leadership of Abushiri bin Salim al Harth and Bwana Heri. On 6th June 1889 Saadani was bombarded and taken by Germans. Bwana Heri being considered by the Germans as an honourable enemy, he was told to rebuild Saadani.

Saadani`s and Bagamoyo`s caravan trade declined at the end of the 19th century while  Dar-es-salaam  rose to be the most important trading centre of the coastal region. Commercial production along the coast, such as rice, sugar and copra, which were exported to Zanzibar and the Indian Ocean, disappeared after the German invasion. These were replaced by cash crops such as coffee, cotton and sisal for the European market. Following the transfer of the protectorate to the British after the First World War sisal, kapok, cashew estates and cattle ranches were established in the Saadani area. Ruins of stone houses still bear testimony to the former flourishing condition.

An old German boma (government house) and several graves can still be found in Saadani.

The humid savannah of Saadani National Park can be divided into three easily distinguishable types: tall grass savanna with herbaceous cover growing up to 2m and scattered palms, short grass grazing land mostly situated on former sisal plantation and black cotton plains where the clay soil creates particularly harsh conditions.

Different degrees of tree cover can be distinguished: typical for Saadani is Acacia Zanzibarica with its long spines, which cover large areas of the park. Inhabitants of the tall grass savannas are the buffalo which weigh up to 850kg and several herds of hartebeests can be observed grazing in Saadan National Park.

The common waterbuck occurs all over the park area. Weighing up to 270kg these grazers can be easily recognized by the white ring around their tails. The density of reedbucks is especially high in Saadani National Park, although this medium-sized antelope (45kg) might be difficult to spot in tall grasses where they lie down for shelter. Warthogs are omnipresent and even come into Saadani village. As most of the villagers are Muslims, warthogs have learned that they will not be harmed.

The tallest animals in the world and the national symbol of Tanzania, giraffes, are numerous in Saadani National Park .Their tongues have special callus plates which make them particularly well adapted to browse on spiny acacia trees.
Large herds of white-bearded wildebeest graze in the short grass savannas. They were released in the area in the 1970’s. Other introduced species are plains zebra and eland.

The lion, the largest of the African carnivores, is also found in Saadani although it is rarely seen. At night you may hear the hyenas and encounter genets, porcupines and civets. Other species which can be observed within the perimeter of the park are bushbucks, bush pigs, yellow baboons and vervet monkeys.

RIVER AND OCEAN

From East to West, the open ocean with coral reefs changes to brackish water ecosystem characterized by mangrove forest, salt pans and bare saline areas. Further inland, the Wami River is the most important fresh water source beside numerous temporary rivers and dams.

At low tide the sea retreats up to 100 metre to form a convenient passage for local people and wild animals. These beaches are the only place north of Dar-es-salaam where sea turtles still come to lay their eggs. The most common species is the green turtle, the largest of the hard-shelled sea turtles. Beside nest thieves on the beach, turtles are particularly threatened by commercial fisheries and water pollution. The marine extension of the park includes the Mafui sandbanks, whose colorful coral reefs are important breeding sites for many fish species.

Evergreen mangrove trees grow in the transactional zone, just above the mean sea water level. These salt tolerant tidal forests provide a resting and feeding place for many bird species, bats, monkeys, hippos and reptiles. Numerous species of fish such as prawns also lay their eggs in these protected habitats. The high demand for the resistance mangrove wood leads to over exploitation, making the protection of these forests even more important. In Saadani National Park, large mangrove forest grows along the Wami River. This is also the place where large groups of hippos can be observed. Nile crocodile also live here. The Wami River is a very good place for watching birds such as kingfishers, fish eagles and many species of wading birds

FOREST  AND SHRUBS

The less known coastal forest is characterized by a high biodiversity with many plants occurring only in this area (endemics). Forest plays an important role in protecting the soil against erosion and thus regulates the water cycle. Besides the two large forests of Zaraninge and Kwamsisi, many of the smaller patches of forest and shrubs represent an important habitat for animals.  These forests and shrubs are vulnerable to illegal logging, charcoal production and farming expansion.

In Saadani, elephants are relatively shy and usually hide during the day in woody parts of the park. Leopards are also found in dense bushes and trees (thickets). Seldom seen, these animals are mainly nocturnal and can live in close proximity to humans. Other showy animals living mostly in woody areas are the greater kudu and smaller antelopes such as suni and duiker. The tree crowns are inhabited by colubus monkeys which subsist mainly on leaves, strictly nocturnal bush babies as well as many fruit eating bird species, insects and butterflies.

The bush meets the beach in Saadani National Park. Thanks to its long Indian Ocean beachfront, this is the one place in East Africa where those idle hours of sunbathing might be interrupted by an elephant strolling past, or animals coming to drink at a nearby waterhole. And if you go for an early morning stroll on the beach you might see the Swahili fishers casting their nets at sunrise.

Pros & Cons

  • Combination of beach and bush
  • Perfect beach destination for people who prefer a bush environment to a typical holiday resort
  • Closest wildlife-viewing destination to Zanzibar, connected by daily flights
  • Guided walks and boat trips available
  • Most of the major safari animals aren't present or easily seen
  • The wildlife-viewing circuit is small
  • Lack of wilderness appeal with human settlements all around

Saadani isn’t a prime safari destination, but there is always some wildlife around. Commonly seen on drives are elephant, giraffe, buffalo, common waterbuck , Lichtenstein's hartebeest , wildebeest , yellow baboon and vervet monkey . Hippos , crocodiles and a selection of waterbirds can be seen on boat trips. Saadani's wildlife specials are the shy red duiker , the endangered Roosevelt's sable and green turtles , for which the park is a breeding site.

  • More about Saadani’s wildlife

Mangroves separate the idyllic palm-lined beaches, and the watercourses are fringed by woodland. The habitat inside the park is mostly grassland interspersed with acacia thickets. Part of the extensive Zaraninge coastal forest, a biodiversity hot spot in Tanzania, is also located within the park boundaries.

Morning and afternoon game drives are best to see a variety of wildlife, but there is no better way to connect with nature than on a walking safari . Bird-lovers should not miss out on a river safari. A boat cruise on the Wami River is a highlight of any stay. Snorkeling trips and village tours are also available.

Saadani’s tropical climate is governed by a warm Dry season (June to September) and a hot, sticky Wet season (October to May). Rain shouldn’t really interfere with your safari, except in April and May, when the rainfall peaks.

  • More about the weather and climate

The best time to visit Saadani is after the rains, in January and February (in the dry spell between the short and long rains) and from June to August (the opening months of the Dry season). This is when animals use the water pooled on the plains to hydrate. The birdlife is most spectacular in the Wet season.
