The best time of year to visit Amsterdam, Netherlands, is somewhere between Spring and Early Summer (May-June) or Early Autumn (September-November). Even though the crowded city-scape makes for a good photograph, in the late Summer, between the bicycles, trams, cars, pedestrians, and heat, you may find yourself exceptionally overwhelmed.

Here’s what you can expect to find in each season in Amsterdam, we’ll leave it up to you to decide which time of year will deliver your most attractive photo session.

Visiting Amsterdam in Spring

Many prefer to visit Amsterdam in Spring because the temperatures are relatively cool with a nice amount of sunshine to keep your photographs bright and handsome. Looking for the best photo spots in Amsterdam? Well, you’re in luck because Amsterdam is one of the most photogenic places in Europe. From the endless canals (60 miles to be exact) to the 17th-century row homes, and tulip fields for days – anyone will leave this city with beautiful memories captured on film. Amsterdam made me fall in love with traveling it’s so charming and quaint and can easily be visited in a few days. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy your time if you plan to visit for longer. In this guide, I’ll be sharing the best photo spots to make your Amsterdam photography trip picture-perfect.

Best Photo Spots in Amsterdam

Amsterdam’s canals are a must-see attraction for anyone visiting the city, offering a glimpse into its rich history and culture. As well as stunning views and unique experiences. It would be hard to visit Amsterdam and not enjoy views over the canals. Since the most iconic feature of the city is its canals.

There are three main canals which are the Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht. Lining the canal are rows of canal houses built by wealthy merchants during the Golden Age which are characterized by their narrow houses and charming facades. The houses are narrow because back in the day you paid taxes on the width of your house. Furthermore, many of the houses have been converted into museums, shops, restaurants, and private residences.

One of the best ways to experience Amsterdam’s canals is by taking a canal cruise, which allows you to see the city from a unique perspective. Canal tours are available throughout the day and evening and can be done by boat, waterbike, or even stand-up paddleboard. Finally, it’s a great place for locals and visitors to relax, with many cafes and restaurants offering canal-side seating. Book your canal tour here !

Dam Square is located in the heart of the city. It received its name from the Dam that was built across the Amstel River in the 13th century. It is a popular tourist spot with a lot of historical buildings and statues. It’s also home to the Royal Palace, which is a great photo subject due to its grand facade. When visiting Dam Square you can enjoy lots of street food, live-performers, and it’s a main hub for transportation.

Throughout the year, Dam Square hosts many events and festivals, including the famous Koningsdag (King’s Day) celebration on April 27th, when the entire city turns orange to celebrate the Dutch monarchy. Dam Square is a vibrant and bustling part of Amsterdam that offers a unique glimpse into the city’s rich history and culture, as well as many opportunities for photos.

Damrak – The Dancing Houses

Damrak is a street that starts at Amsterdam Central Station and goes all the way to Dam Square. You could say it’s the most popular street in all of Amsterdam and a hub for public transportation. Along the street is the most famous Amsterdam photo spot, the dancing houses. The Dancing Houses consist of three narrow buildings, each with a distinct and quirky shape. The buildings were designed by the Dutch architect Winy Maas and completed in 2002.

The buildings are characterized by their curved and tilted facades, which give them the appearance of dancing or swaying in the wind. The facades are covered in glass and stainless steel panels, giving the buildings a modern and futuristic look. It’s best to photograph across the canal on Damrak. Furthermore, near Damrak is the Red Light District, and while it’s popular, it’s not really the place to photograph.

The MOCO Museum is a contemporary art museum located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The museum is known for its unique and exciting exhibitions featuring works from some of the world’s most famous modern and contemporary artists.

The Rijksmuseum

This is one of the most famous museums in Amsterdam and notably the world. The museum’s collection consists of over 1 million objects, including paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts. The most famous works in the collection include masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh.

The Rijksmuseum’s most notable work is Rembrandt’s “Night Watch,” a large-scale painting that depicts a group of civic guards from Amsterdam. The painting is considered a masterpiece of the Dutch Golden Age and is a must-see for visitors to the museum. In addition to its collections, the Rijksmuseum also features a number of exhibitions and events throughout the year, including lectures, concerts, and film screenings.

Furthermore, the library located inside is what dreams are made of. The library is considered one of the most important art libraries in the world, with a collection of over 400,000 volumes, including books, journals, manuscripts, and maps. The Jordaan neighborhood

The Anne Frank House

This is a historic house and the museum is dedicated to the life and legacy of Anne Frank. A Jewish girl who became famous for her diary during World War II. The museum is located in the actual house where Anne and her family hid from the Nazis during the war. The house was originally built in the 17th century and was used as a warehouse and office space before the Frank family moved in.

In July 1942, the Frank family went into hiding in a concealed area of the house, along with four other people. They remained in hiding for two years until they were discovered by the Nazis in August 1944. The museum offers an audio guide while you journey through the rooms of the house where the Frank family hid.

It is a powerful and moving testament to the resilience and courage of Anne Frank and her family, as well as to the countless victims of the Holocaust. It is a must-visit destination for anyone visiting Amsterdam and interested in the history of the Holocaust.

The Bloemenmarkt

The Bloemenmarkt is the world’s only floating flower market. It is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, drawing millions of visitors every year. The market is located along the Singel Canal, near the Koningsplein square, and consists of a series of houseboats that have been converted into flower stalls.

The market sells a variety of flowers and plants, including tulips, daffodils, roses, and more. The Bloemenmarkt has a long history, dating back to the early 19th century when flower sellers would come to Amsterdam to sell their wares. Over time, the market became a permanent fixture, and the floating flower stalls were introduced in the 20th century. Finally, you can walk around and shop as they have tons of plants, flowers, and souvenirs to choose from.

• Keukenhof Gardens – Located in Lisse, about a 30-minute drive from Amsterdam.
• Noordoostpolder – This area is located about an hour’s drive from Amsterdam and is one of the largest tulip-growing regions in the Netherlands.
• Haarlemmermeer – Located just outside of Amsterdam and is known for its tulip fields and flower farms.

It’s no secret that Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most visited—and photographed—cities. It’s such a picturesque small big city, and it’ll always be our second home (read how our love story unfolded in this city).

Although you can wander around and find Instagrammable spots in Amsterdam everywhere, your Amsterdam photography will be complete when you visit these photo spots!

Amsterdam Canals

Amsterdam canal cruise.

A classic Amsterdam photo is one with canals in it. What’s a better way to photograph the iconic waters than from a canal cruise?

There are many places to hop on a cruise; the most popular spot is at Damrak, close to the Central Station.

Are you with a group and looking for a unique experience? Look up the initiative Plastic Whale! We highly recommend Rederij P. Kooij at Rokin for your Amsterdam photography, where you can hop on a cruise from €12 per person.

Brouwersgracht

The most famous Amsterdam photo spot of the canals, with the traditional canal houses that look like they’re about to tip over! You have the best view from the Papiermolensluis bridge.

TIP visit the canals for sunrise when water is still. It makes for great reflections and the city is so incredibly peaceful!

Damrak Traditional Canal Houses

The classic gingerbread houses are so crooked because they’re sinking! Don’t be fooled: this spot is not as peaceful as it looks because it is the Damrak , the street that connects the central station with the Dam square—where every tourist goes.

But it’s the most famous spot for Amsterdam photography.

TIP the light is best at the end of the day when the sun is setting but not quite yet!

Amsterdam Bridges

Reguliersgracht: seven bridges.

On any canal cruise, you’ll pass this point and have the best view, but you can also visit Thorbeckeplein (right next to Rembrandtplein ) and look to the south for your Amsterdam photography.

If you place your camera on the ground at the edge of the street (don’t drop it in the canal!), you can see seven bridges in a row.

Magere Brug / Skinny Bridge

This cute white bridge across the river Amstel is one of the most famous bridges in Amsterdam.

Legend tells that two skinny sisters had a small bridge built, as each sister lived on one side of the Amstel – and the bridge was to see each other more often.

It used to be a skinny bridge, but a slightly wider bridge replaced it in 1871.

TIP if you visit this bridge with your lover, make sure to kiss on (or under, on a cruise) the bridge, it allegedly brings luck!

Staalmeestersbrug

The Staalmeestersbrug is such a cute bridge – and a pretty street. It’s a bridge for love locks and makes for the best view of the Zuiderkerk !

TIP use props like a bicycle or flowers to make your photos EXTRA!

Other Famous Amsterdam Photo Spots

Rijksmuseum.

The National Museum is dedicated to arts and history in Amsterdam and displays many famous paintings by Dutch masters from the 17e century, like Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Johannes Vermeer.

The museum’s architecture is as beautiful as the masterpieces that decorate the walls inside.

The design (by Pierre Cuypers) wasn’t well-received: people considered it too medieval and not Dutch. Luckily much has changed since the official opening in 1885!

TIP on Instagram we noticed many people take pictures across the museum: there’s a cute house, which is the office of Atlas Fiscalisten .

I Amsterdam Sign

The I Amsterdam sign used to be one of the famous spots of Amsterdam photography, located at Museumplein, in front of the Rijksmuseum.

The city, however, decided to remove the letters as they attracted too many tourists in one spot. Now, a set of letters travels around the city, and one set stands at Schiphol airport!

Central Station

The central station building is as gorgeous as the Rijksmuseum, which isn’t weird: as it is a design by the same Pierre Cuypers (opened a few years later, though, in 1889).

The odds are, you will already pay a visit to this station the first day you arrive! A train from Schiphol only takes 15 mins.

Chinatown & Nieuwmarkt

In Chinatown, you’ll find a beautiful temple and fantastic food. At Nieuwmarkt, you can have a couple of drinks with some delicious (Dutch) snacks! This area is crowded, but super fun to visit.

Jordaan: 9 Straatjes (9 Little Streets)

If you like shopping, this is the place to be. Forget the commercialized Kalverstraat or fancy PC Hooftstraat; you want to check out the cute boutique shops at 9 Little Streets!

Besides shopping, the Jordaan is great for drinks and photographing the cutest Amsterdam streets!

Begijnhof (Hidden Gem Amsterdam)

The Begijnhof is one of the oldest Dutch hofjes , founded in the middle ages! As the name suggests, it was a beguinage .

So it wasn’t private housing, and women of the Catholic sisterhood inhabited it. Similar to nuns, they lived more independently and free.

In 1971 the last beguine who lived there passed away. The houses are still inhabitant, though not by beguines. Please be respectful of their living space!

Amsterdam Windmill & Brewery ‘t IJ

Amsterdam has the tallest windmill in the Netherlands! No need to travel far to see this Dutch icon, take tram 14 from Central Station or the Dam to Pontanusstraat for about 15 mins.

Right next to windmill De Gooyer, you’ll find the tasting room of Amsterdam brewery ‘t IJ.

Zaanse Schans

For more windmills, you have to visit the Zaanse Schans. It’s free to visit unless you enter some of the (windmill)museums.

For example, you can visit a wooden shoe museum to see how Dutchies make traditional shoes!

You can get to the Zaanse Schans by train (17 min ride, 15 min walk) or by bus 391 (40 min ride), the Industrial Heritage Line.

TIP most group tours visit the Zaanse Schans early morning, so you’ll be better off visiting later in the day!

Views of Amsterdam

Oba rooftop viewpoint.

The OBA has the best FREE viewpoint of Amsterdam! Go up to the OBA’s rooftop cafe (Amsterdam’s public library) and enjoy the view.

A’DAM lookout

If you’re up for some excitement – try Europe’s highest swing at the A’DAM lookout. There’s an over-the-edge swing on the 20th floor. We can say from experience: it’s scarier than it seems!

TIP do not try to fly your drone in Amsterdam for a nice overview. The city is too close to the airport !

We gotta talk about street art photography opportunities in Amsterdam! The “Wake me up when I’m famous” art in the Pijp has become super famous over the last year.

The neighborhood has many cute cafes and restaurants – make sure to wander around!

Rainbow Road Sloterdijk Station

It’s no secret we love everything rainbow. The rainbow road at Sloterdijk Station was made for us!

Amsterdam Zuid-Oost

Again, we’re biased because this was where we lived before traveling the world. The Heesterveld Creative Community (right next to the Bullewijk subway stop) is color-heaven.

There’s also an adorable cafe Oma Ietje (grandma Ietje), that serves the best toasted sandwiches! If you wander around the area (towards the shops at De Poort), you’ll see much more street art.

Our newest favorite area! Super industrial and raw – the opposite of the cute canals, yet so cool. Lots of graffiti, sea containers and more cute cafes! Every month you can visit the biggest flea market in Europe here (IJhallen), but any time is great to wander around this area.

Amsterdam Light Festival

Every December/January, the city lights up during the Amsterdam Light Festival . It’s an open-air art exhibition throughout the city, with all kinds of light artworks.

You can do an art walk at night, but it’s a truly magical experience to hop on a canal cruise and see it from the water.

Ice Skating at Museumplein

Unfortunately, it’s not every year you can ice skate on natural ice on the canals or in the Amsterdamse Bos.

You can, however, always ice skate at the Ice*Amsterdam skating rink from mid-November until early February!

King’s Day and Amsterdam Pride

Perfect for some colorful Amsterdam photography: visit the city for King’s Day (April 27) or Amsterdam Pride (Canal Parade, first Saturday of August).

On the King’s birthday, everyone wears oranges and drinks beer on the streets!

Flowers: Tulips and Cherry Blossoms

Of course, everyone wants to see one thing in the Netherlands: tulip fields! You can only see it for a few weeks, from mid-April until mid-May (but it all depends on the weather!).

Little do people know we also have a beautiful cherry blossom ( sakura ) park in Amsterdam! The trees bloom in the spring, and it can be a little tricky to say when is the best time to visit, but this year, we were lucky visiting late March.

Why are Amsterdam Family Photos Important?

For our family, it was our first time visiting Amsterdam and it’s been on my travel bucket list for ages. It’s also the only time our family will be traveling to Amsterdam with a 6-year-old and a 9-year-old.

I really love capturing each slice of our lives because time never stands still. I want to be able to look back and see our expressions exploring a new city.

Doing a photoshoot in Amsterdam was a lot of fun and it was a cool way to see the city with a local.

Our kids were especially excited about the bicycles and canals, so we tried to incorporate them as much as possible. I think our favorite Amsterdam memories include NOT getting run over by bicycles!

What to Wear for Your Amsterdam Photo Shoot

Of course, you can totally wear whatever you want for your Amsterdam family photos. But, I know some people like to get ideas, so I’m listing a few options to add to your Amsterdam packing list to make your photos look cohesive.

Comfort is Key

Whether you’re strolling along the historic canals or posing by the city’s iconic landmarks, comfortable footwear is essential.

The cobblestones are uneven and sometimes loose, so I don’t recommend heels. Flat shoes or sandals are perfect.

Amsterdam’s weather can be unpredictable, and it’s not uncommon for a sunny day to suddenly turn chilly or rainy. Layer your clothing so you can adjust throughout the day.

I’m so glad that I brought sweaters for my boys and a denim jacket for myself. I really didn’t think we’d need them at first since we had a late morning shoot, but we definitely needed that extra layer!

Classic and Timeless

You can’t go wrong with classic styles and neutral colors, especially in a city as timeless as Amsterdam.

Neutral palettes include whites, greys, browns, and blues. We went with greys, blues, and a pop of yellow.

Your photos will have a timeless quality to them, and your outfits won’t distract from the beautiful city backdrop.

Pop of Color

Amsterdam is known for its bursts of color, from tulips to vibrant house fronts. Don’t be afraid to incorporate some color into your wardrobe to reflect the city’s lively character.

My friend did a Flytographer photo shoot in Amsterdam the week before me and she wore a red maxi skirt and a red beret and I was totally bummed that I didn’t think of that!

Accessorize

Hats, scarves, a bouquet, or a vintage bicycle can add a touch of Dutch charm to your photos. You can grab some items at local shops.

We brought along Miffy stuffies to use for a few photos. And I wore a straw hat and a pearl necklace.

7 Tips for Getting Awesome Rome Family Pictures Every Time

1. bring an adapter for hair tools.

If you usually use a flat iron or curling iron to do your hair, make sure your hair tools are dual voltage AND bring an adapter with you.

It’s not very humid in Amsterdam, so you might not need as many products (like hairspray) that you’d need in other destinations.

2. You’ll Want to do Full Makeup

There’s something about doing photos that can make your face look a bit washed out. That’s why I always suggest that people do full makeup (or at least lipstick) even if they don’t normally wear it.

It’s an easy way to look put-together and you’ll probably look more like yourself in the photos.

3. Think About Your Outfits

Amsterdam is a bit of a quirky destination so you can really show off your unique personalities. Or you can do something more neutral. Either way, you’ll want to think about what to wear as you are packing.

If you have the suitcase space, pack one outfit for warm weather and one for cooler weather so you have some options.

4. Figure Out the Best Time of Day for Your Family

Usually I recommend that people aim for an early morning shoot whenever possible. That’s because the lighting is great and there are usually a lot less people out and about.

Evening time is also a popular choice because you can take advantage of Golden Hour lighting. But, you might also have to wait longer for crowds to move out of your shot.

We ended up going with a late morning shoot and that was perfect for us. We had been traveling for more than a week and my kids and hubby were needing a lazy morning.

5. Choose Your Route Carefully

Take a look at all the photo shoot route options to see which one has the type of backgrounds you have in mind.

We really wanted photos with the canals and cute buildings. I love photos that really emphasize the destination.

6. Add an Incentive For Your Kids

We promised our kids a shopping spree at Tony’s Chocolonely at the end of our Amsterdam photography session . And we told them they would earn Pokemon cards.

I know that doing family photos isn’t always super fun for kids (and we do them a LOT) so I like to reward my kids for humoring me.

7. Think About Props

We bought little Miffy stuffed animals with us. Our kids were already obsessed with Miffy but we didn’t realize it was from the Netherlands! We figured it would be cute and appropriate to have those in our photos.

I also considered getting a bouquet of flowers to hold while walking around.

As a photographer, it’s a hobby of mine finding the best places to take photos in Amsterdam. I’ve been living in Amsterdam for over two years and I’m still finding cute streets with traditional Dutch architecture in Amsterdam to wander down.

 My go-to place for gorgeous Amsterdam photos is in my favorite neighborhood , the Jordaan. My favorite spot is the intersection of Prinseneiland and Brouwersgracht in front of the historic Papeneiland cafe.  

It’s easy to get lost in the nearby streets, especially Palmstraat, before stepping into a historic brown cafe to enjoy the moodiness.  You can follow my self-guided walking tour of the Jordaan to see my favorite buildings.

Brown bars are cozy Dutch bars with an older wooden interior where you can stop off for a beer in an atmospheric location.  They’re definitely something to put on your Dutch bucket list! I recommend stopping into  Cafe Chris, a cozy brown bar.

Prinseneiland Neighborhood

This small, hidden neighborhood behind Centre is a gem for photographers. A lot of people are terrible by the tunnel that you must pass under in order to get to this neighborhood, however Prinseneiland is truly one of the hidden gems of Amsterdam.

In Prinseneiland (as well as Realeneiland), you’ll find historic Rijksmoment warehouses that are straight out of a picture book.  There’s also a number of historic wooden bridges that pass over the canals.  Unlike the rest of Amsterdam’s centre, it has a village feeling.

For those with families, you’ll also find a canal-side petting zoo for children complete with friendly goats that truly make the view unique…  You can read more about this area on the list of the best secret places in Amsterdam .

This modern area across the IJ river is perfect for photographers who want a more modern feel to their photos. There’s plenty of street art/murals around Noord although the best ones are close to the location of the IJhallen.    You can click for my guide to Amsterdam Noord & NDSM.

You can also visit the artist studios in NDSM for a modern/funky place to take photos. Otherwise, visit one of the modern cafes with scenic views over the river or explore the beautiful/modern EYE film museum.

I have a weakness for the gorgeous canal houses in this area.  I often come here to browse at the American Book Centre (where you’ll find a great photography book section).   Although it’s still quite center, one wrong turn will bring you you to quieter street full of stunning houses and bikers.

You’ll also find the best cookies in Amsterdam close to here!  The canal houses towards the Singel canal area always a delight to photograph.

This modern park, slightly outside of the City Center, is my favorite place to take photos outdoors. Although Vondelpark is pretty, it’s hard to get a photo without people. There are also adorable bungalows across a small canal and a pretty windmill that you can visit.

For shopping/hipster vibes, visit the Westergasfabriek complex for cool bars, cute local shops, and tasty food. I strongly recommend bringing a picnic blanket here for summer!

This iconic courtyard is one of Amsterdam’s many gorgeous hidden courtyards.  You need to enter a hidden door, but once you do, it gets quiet.  This gorgeous complex was shared by single Catholic women who lived in something similar to a convent.

You’re limited to the non-resident’s viewpoint, but it’s a great place to shoot photos. You’ll see a lot of Amsterdam photographers here with their tripods! There are far less touristy hofjes, however this one is open the most regularly.  ( Click to read about more secret places in Amsterdam. )

Rijksmuseum / Museumplein

The classic Amsterdam photo that everyone wants to have.  The Rijksmuseum is incredible ornate inside and outside, so many photographers enjoy shooting this scene around sunset. I particularly love shooting in the Rijksmuseum library, which you can peek into while touring the museum.  The main entry hall is stunning too…

You can easily walk a bit further to enjoy Vondelpark’s lush landscape/lakes (best in spring/summer/fall).  One of my favorite off the beaten gems to shoot is the Blauwe Theehuis, soon to be part of Brouwerij ‘T IJ.   This round cafe in the middle of Vondelpark is just a cool piece of architecture.

(Seasonal) Amsterdam Lights Festival

Between mid December and mid January, the Herengracht canal is lit up with sculptures during the Amsterdam Light Festival . You’ll see two parts in late December: the main part along Herengracht and the other part intended for walking tours.

To be clear, the sculptures change every year, so you will not see the same ones next year.) The sculptures are usually still there in early January, but it’s not guaranteed. I love walking along the canals with a cup of hot chocolate in hand!

The light sculptures along the walking tour can be easily seen for free without a guide and you can simply follow the crowds once arriving close to the Hortus Botanicus , another great photo spot, close to sunset. Many of these are also interactive, which makes it fun. Expect crowds although it’s still not that well known.

For the main part of the lights festival, you will have the best view from an open top boat (rather than a closed top boat) due to the glass reflection.

9. Brouwersgracht & Herengracht Canals

Although Prinsengracht is the most famous canal, I love shooting along the Herengracht and Brouwersgracht canals.  Even if you’re on foot, it’s possible to get some gorgeous shots by the canals! (Biking along Amsterdam is a great way to find your favorite buildings as the city isn’t that large!)

This area is not as well known among Amsterdam instagrammers or visitors, but for those into more industrial photographs, there are some really lovely areas to shoot here, including Brouwerij ‘T IJ.

11. Museum van Loon

This museum is a dream and there’s almost nobody around, besides a gorgeous fluffy cat . (The fluffy cat actually belongs to the neighbors and attempts to break into the house all the time.  The cat is super friendly…)

Why go? Gorgeous canal house with a secret garden that connects to the other side of the canal.   Is that cool or what? It also has beautiful furniture and paintings if you want to pretend that you’re royalty.

12. Wake me up when I’m famous bench / De Pijp

I’ve seen this funny mural in so many blogger photos, so I had to hunt it down for myself.  Depending on whether there’s cars blocking it, you might need to avoid the bikes while taking a photo.

Now, to convince someone to sleep on the bench… De Pijp is one of Amsterdam’s residential gems, full of cute coffee shops and colorful houses. You’ll also find super instagrammable cafes like CT Coffee and Coconuts, a former theatre turned cafe.

For the best views in Amsterdam, head to Blue Amsterdam. This brunch spot with 360 views of Amsterdam is not as well known as the Amsterdam Swing , however the views are stunning.  It’s hidden within a mall in the middle of centre, but this cafe is not to missed!

Museum Willet-Holthuysen

This canal-house museum has a stunning garden that you’ll definitely want to see. The house is a good example of how wealthy residents of Amsterdam lived in the mid-1800s.  Photo tip: Have a friend stand in the window upstairs to take photos of you below in the garden!

The Flower Market

If you’re a flower lover, consider stopping into the Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam. Some of the stalls have decorated their stalls with hanging flowers at the top of the stall although it’s particularly beautiful during tulip season in April.

Great idea to share these spots Karen – and it’s so true that many of the best spots are a bit away from the city centre. Personally I love Brouwersgracht too, and the spot on Prins Hendrikkade (forget the name of the canal) where you can look down towards nieuwmarkt. 🙂 Ellie

Amsterdam is fantastic! Brouwersgracht is my favorite canal as well. I like to stay in the southern section of the city – not too far from rijksmuseum. I think I need to go back to Amsterdam soon, its been too long now…

Really nice guide! There are so many instagrammable spots in Amsterdam that it’s nice to have a little bit of direction if you’re looking for the best photo spots. I followed your recommendation (from the neighborhood post) about going to Noord- and it was freeeeezing but I ended up having that warehouse lot all to myself! I think that was probably my favorite thing I did there (well, that and pie after getting gin drunk at foodhallen lol)

Beautiful photos! I was transiting in Amsterdam for a few hours before flying into Iceland and only managed to see the main shopping area but that was already beautiful. Must really go back for a proper visit and look for the spots you recommended 🙂

This workshop will include a concise lecture and visual presentation on travel photography. Then we will take our knowledge to the streets, going to three of Amsterdam’s hidden spots.   We will give new techniques to try at each destination.

Photogenic Places – A Simple Guide To Photographing Amsterdam

Amsterdam is one of the best cities in the world for photography. The combination of the unique architecture, canals, beautiful bridges and even the bicycles all combine to create wonderful travel photos. The great thing about Amsterdam is that it is so easily accessible that in just a few days you can come back with hundreds of great photos. So here is a simple guide to photographing Amsterdam.

If there is one thing that is synonymous with Amsterdam, then it is its canals. Built during the Golden Age of the 17th century, Amsterdam’s canal ring was originally built for practical reasons. It allowed the city to grow beyond its fortified boundaries and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013. The canals in Amsterdam are an integral part of the city and naturally should be one of the first things that you add to your shot list.

There are plenty of places to capture those post-card shots. But here is a list of a few of the best spots:

The intersection of Leidsegracht and Keizersgracht – This is one of the most iconic spots in Amsterdam for photography. The two bridges and the houses in the background provide a wonderful composition. You can also combine these with slow exposure motion blur and light trails from the boats that go under the bridges

View of Westerkerk Church from Leliegracht and Prinsengracht intersection – This is a great spot to capture photographs of the church and river. Head out during the blue hour and the lights on the canal will act as a leading line to the church.

An alternative view of Westerkerk from Reestraat and Prinsengracht intersection – To get a view of the church from the other side head to this intersection which is a good spot in the late afternoon light. If you are patient and wait around you can capture a boat in the canal to give you a point of interest.

Stadhouderskade road – Not visited as much by photographers as some of the spots above, along the bank of this road, also provides great photo opportunities of the beautiful houses along the river.

Basilica of Saint Nicholas – Near the train station, across the body of water from the Basilica is a great place to capture blue hour shots of the Basilica with its reflection in the water.

Damrak – This is probably the most famous spot in Amsterdam for photos. The unique and quirky building across the canal are incredibly photogenic and will reflect in the water. The best time to photograph these is during the blue hour.

These are just some of the places that you can capture great photos of the canals in Amsterdam. The reality is that you can walk around any neighbourhood and capture great photos.

Rijksmuseum

The museum itself is stunning and you should take some time to explore and photograph the inside (yes, photography is allowed inside). Make sure you visit the library which is very photogenic. But the outside of the Rijksmuseum is a great place to photograph during the blue hour. Position yourself at the back of the long fountain and you’ll capture beautiful shots leading the eyes to the museum.

Whilst there make sure you turn around and photograph the Van Gogh museum as well that will be directly behind you. You can try to include some people walking across the path in your composition for added interest.

Bloemenmarkt

The world’s only floating flower market shouldn’t be missed off from your shot list for Amsterdam. Whilst it may not seem as photogenic as the beautiful canals, this will offer a different view of this city. Be sure to capture photos of people looking inside the stalls and close-ups of the flowers, seeds and other goods on sale.

Albert Cuyp Market

This market in the De Pijp area of Amsterdam is a great place to practice some market photography. There is everything from clothing to food on sale. This makes it a wonderful place for photography. Make sure you cover off shots of the food, vendors and other products on sale. But also make sure you photograph the people who visit the market too as they are as integral to it as the vendors.

This park near the Museumplein in the Amsterdam-Zuid borough offers a welcome relief from the hectic and busy city. It is also a great place to capture photographs of the locals relaxing, enjoying a picnic and cycling. There are also sculpture and plenty of flora and fauna to keep any type of photographer busy for a few hours.

The Royal Palace in Dam Square

You won’t be able to miss this incredible building in the heart of the city. But being where it also makes it difficult to photograph without hoards of people in your way. So the best way to capture great photos of this building is in the evening when you can use a slow shutter speed. Look to set your shutter speed to 30 seconds and you should be able to blur out most of the people in the shot for a cleaner image.

The Begijnhof is one of the oldest squares in Amsterdam. It is a group of houses that provided homes for a group of unmarried religious women who lived together in this community under vows of chastity (Beguines). This secluded courtyard provides a nice alternative to the busy parts of the city. On the green, in the courtyard, you’ll see a statue of a Beguine and another of Jesus Christ which makes for a nice photo with the houses providing a background.

View from Westerkerk Church Tower

Somewhere that is often overlooked by photographers is the view from the top of Westerkerk Church Tower. At 40 meters high this gives a wonderful overhead view of Amsterdam. There is an entrance fee and you can only walk to the top of the tower with a guided tour that runs every 30 minutes. The climb is steep with ladder-like steps in some parts. Try to walk up in the late afternoon where your reward will be stunning picture opportunities in golden light.

Other photography opportunities

There is so much to photograph in Amsterdam that you could easily spend months there. Other notable things to add to your shot list are street-side cafes and bars as well as the beautiful historic houses. Some of which you will be allowed to go into and take photos. There is also the NEMO Science Museum that offers a modern alternative to the older parts of the city. Another interesting place to capture some unique photos are the bicycle parks that are used like multi-storey car parks. There is one near the main train station.

Red Light District

Whilst you can photograph pretty much all of Amsterdam without any issues or problems, one area that you should definitely avoid taking photos in is the Red Light district, especially at night. If you try to, you could find yourself in trouble and your camera ending up in the canal. So don’t take the risk, it isn’t worth it.

Amsterdam is one of the world’s great cities for photography. Whilst this list gives you some of the locations that you should photograph, this is a place that you just need to explore by walking around. You’ll probably find hundreds of more locations that are not on this list. But one thing is for sure, you’ll come back with fantastic photos and amazing memories.

Where can you get your best shots for the gram and which are some secret places you and your camera need to know about?

This guide is not only about photo spots where you should go to pose and get a shot of yourself, but as well about great places for some urban photography. But see for yourself!

The best time for photographers in Amsterdam

You will see, that Amsterdam really is a photographer´s paradise. Why? Not only because of the unique and beautiful locations, btu as well because it is an all-year-round place to shoot. There really is no time during the year where photographers in Amsterdam will not be able to capture a unique shot.

During every season of the year, Amsterdam looks stunning on pictures. The warm light during spring and summer, the golden trees during the fall time and the frozen canals during winter – whenever you visit Amsterdam, you will have a blast with your camera.

Some photographers and travellers do decide to visit the city multiple times to get the different perspectives of the seasons.

For the best shots, get out early in the morning or during the late afternoon

Of course, if you want to have some captures without any people in it, you should start your photography tour early in the morning. During this time, you can avoid most of the crowds and get some quiet and calm pictures. The best light is usually during the late afternoon when the sun slowly fades over the roofs. If you love to play with the light and the sunrays, this is the best time to capture this beautiful city.

Do not forget to capture the city by night

The Damrak is actually a row of houses directly at one of the canals. The Name Damrak refers to the main canal which leads to the center of Amsterdam and the main station. Find some of the best photography spots in Amsterdam in the Red Light District

Travellers and photographers in Amsterdam love to stroll through the Red Light District. The tiny and detailed bridges, the stunning houses and the unique views – in the Red Light District you will find some of the best photography spots in Amsterdam.

The area is perfect if you want to capture one of the typical Amsterdam scenes. A biker driving by or the cute bridges leading over the canals. The balconies in the De Pijp District

One of the best districts for photographers in Amsterdam is the De Pijp. It is located a little out of the city center but can still be reached by foot or by bike. De Pijp is known for cute cafés and the Albert Cuyp Market. And, the cute balconies.

Yes, the De Pijp District is ideal if you want to capture the beautiful homes of the locals in Amsterdam and the picturesque streets. The area is full of narrow streets with stunning houses and flats. The best way to explore the district and to find some good photography spots is to stroll around the streets.

The De Pijp District is the best proof that Amsterdam has even more beautiful sides than just the canals. If you are looking for some more unique shots of the city and a more local area, this is a great choice. Plus, you can get some good shots for Instagram by posing in the streets. Especially during spring and summer, De Pijp is filled with flowers in the gardens.

The picturesque Prinsengracht Canal

This canal needs to be on any list of the best photography spots in Amsterdam. The Prinsengracht Canal offers some of the best views on the city and is a highlight for you and your camera. During any time of the day, and as well as soon as it gets dark, you can capture the views.

Make sure to get a photo with the Westerkerk Tower in the background, at the end of the canal. There are some bridges leading over the Prinsengracht Canal which offer some of the best perspectives. With the beautiful narrow houses on the right and the left of the canal and the houseboats, this could not be any more of an Amsterdam photo.

The blossom and narrow streets in the ` 9 Straatjes ´ (the 9 Streets) – the photogenic district of Amsterdam

Another area you need to check out if you cannot get enough of photographing in Amsterdam are the 9 Straatjes. This is close to the beautiful Jordaan District.

In the 9 Streets you can capture a little of the everyday life in Amsterdam. The locals and tourists sitting in the cute cafés, the bikes along the bridges and the boats driving slowly through the canals. Espeically during the summer time and the spring, you can get the best out of the area. The flowers on the bridges and along the streets make the district one of the most colorful parts of Amsterdam.

This photography spot in Amsterdam is famous among photographers and on Social Media. The area offers multiple spots where you can get your camera out and capture the beauty of this city.

The most popular photo motive in Amsterdam: the bikes

Yes, this is not one particular spot you need to know about but rather a photo idea that needs to be on your list. Amsterdam is known as the city of bikes. Millions and millions of bikes can be seen in the streets. To get one of the typical Amsterdam shots, you should search for a beautiful bike on a bridge with the water in the background.

Could it even be more Amsterdam-like? Probably not.

Antoher unique photography spot: capturing Amsterdam from the canals

To get a different perspective and a new photography spot in Amsterdam, you should get on a boat. Driving through the canals offers you some new possibilities to capture the city. Especially during the sunset hour, this can be a great thing to do with your camera.

The houses from the water, the bridges from below and the vibe on the boat are some more photography motives in Amsterdam you should know about. Again, the creativity has no boundaries and you can create your very own Amsterdam moment on camera.

Meet the Artist Delighting Amsterdam

In the spring of 2020, at the height of the pandemic, the always bustling Dam Square in Amsterdam was deserted, silent and surrounded by concrete counterterrorism blocks. The Dutch street artist Frank de Ruwe, who goes by the name of Frankey, decided these daunting studded blocks resembled something more innocent — giant Lego blocks — and that the city needed something to lighten the gloom.

The result? Later that summer, Frankey created and placed a giant yellow-and-black Lego figure of the Dutch folk singer André Hazes, whose songs have been pub favorites in the Netherlands for more than 40 years.

“It’s all about seeing the right thing,” Frankey said recently, over coffee in his Amsterdam neighborhood. “I think everyone was searching for a bit of bright news during these dark days.”

Frankey continues to delight Amsterdam with his whimsical, witty street art. Yes, every Saturday, he publishes a new piece in the Dutch newspaper Het Parool , as well on Instagram , but those are just the tip of the iceberg. He turns any unassuming spot in the city — a street sign, an oddly shaped brick, a ledge — into something more playful. You’re bound to run into his work on any trip to Amsterdam.

This conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.

In the press, your street art pieces are called ‘urban interventions.’ What does that term mean to you?

I just want to make people smile with my work, that’s the greater good. A 6-year-old and a 90-year-old can smile at the same thing; it’s amazing that you brighten someone’s day with just one object. It’s so easy to be a bit more friendly in the streets, and I think that’s what I’m doing. And if people want to call them urban interventions, I’m cool with that. It feels a bit like a buzzword, but people have been making fun stuff to brighten up the streets for centuries — it’s always been there. I’m just one of those guys who’s also doing that.

When you leave your art on the street, is it legal?

No. It’s illegal. I do have some rules for myself, because I love Amsterdam a lot. I don’t want to harm the city at all, so all the pieces I make can be removed quite easily without leaving any damage. I work a lot with magnets and tie wraps — I probably own every type of double-sided tape in the world. Sometimes I may not know how to construct a piece without using screws or kits or whatever. Then it becomes a nice challenge to connect it so it’s still safe and people could remove it easily. But it’s still illegal.

Do you know what happens to your pieces when they are removed?

Sometimes the streets just get cleaned, and the cleaner doesn’t even notice there was a piece of art to begin with. There’s also a group of people collecting the art to sell online, thinking my work is worth some money. But what I really like is that I’ve seen government vehicles with my work on their dashboard. So they removed it, but kept it as a trophy. But if people want to take it away or take it home — it’s all fine with me. I think it’s a win-win. Even if it’s gone.

What is your method to place your pieces on the street?

I always do it during the day. And I wear one of those orange jackets with fluorescent stripes, so I look like a guy working with the municipality. Whenever I do a big piece and need some space, I bring some orange traffic cones with me. It’s been my method for 20 years and I still get away with that one.

I’ve read that you carry a fake permit. Is that true?

It’s just a piece of paper with a lot of stamps, saying “I, Frank de Ruwe, give a permit to Street Art Frankey to place so-and-so …” But it looks somewhat official because of its layout and because I always add a lot of appendixes. You’ll have an officer standing there with all these papers, all with date stamps — which by the way, say “Frankey official” around the date — and they think: “If it’s got a stamp, it must be official.” It’s the same with the orange jacket.

You’ve done so many pieces. Which one is your favorite?

I was really proud that I was able to make our former mayor for Paradiso, the music venue. The best musicians in the world have played there. It’s an old church, right in the city center — it’s a cultural temple. When I heard that it might not stay a music venue forever, I thought that can’t be possible! It’s such a part of Amsterdam. And our former mayor, Eberhard van der Laan, who was so beloved, was also really into arts and culture.

So I made a little bronze sculpture of him, and he’s sitting on top of Paradiso, holding the building and protecting it with a little smile. And every time I go there, I look up and say: “Yeah, this is a good spot, protect that building.” I have a lot of pieces I don’t check out whenever I pass them. But I’m really proud of that one.

Follow a mile-by-mile map of the total solar eclipse

On April 8, the sun, moon and Earth will enter the precise alignment of a total solar eclipse. The moon will block the sun, casting a shadow across a strip of North America from the Pacific Ocean west of Mexico, through 15 U.S. states, to the Atlantic off Canada.

This strip, roughly 4,000 miles long and 115 miles wide, is called the path of totality. For a short while, everyone and everything in this path will experience midday darkness.

The beginning

2:07-2:11 p.m.

Total time eclipsed

Historic cloud coverage

The moon’s shadow makes landfall in Mexico at 2:07 p.m. Eastern time, casting the first region into darkness. Here, darkness lasts for about four minutes near the center of the path, but decreases in time toward the edges.

A populous path

Nearly 32 million people live in the path of totality this year. The eclipse crosses the homes of more people in Texas alone than the 2017 eclipse crossed nationally.

Eagle Pass, Tex.

2:27-2:31 p.m.

The eclipse crosses into the United States in Eagle Pass, Tex. The border town will be dark for 4 minutes and 23 seconds — over a minute longer than the 2017 eclipse lasted anywhere.

2:35-2:39 p.m.

A 195-mile stretch of Interstate 35 between Austin and Dallas is in the path. Texas officials are already warning drivers not to stop on roadways during the eclipse. You'd have to drive 1,950 miles an hour to keep up with the moon's shadow.

2:40-2:44 p.m.

The nation’s second busiest airport, Dallas Fort Worth International, lies in the path of totality. The airport said flights will not be affected. Some airlines are even offering special flights timed to the eclipse to extend your time in totality.

Hot Springs National Park

2:48-2:53 p.m.

In Arkansas lies Hot Springs National Park, one of two national parks in the path of totality. Parks across the country, even those not in totality, are planning livestreams, shows and talks for the eclipse.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways

2:55-2:59 p.m.

Just like many humans, Smokey Bear is also traveling into the path of totality. A 97-foot-tall hot air balloon bearing Smokey’s face is traveling from New Mexico to the Ozarks to remind visitors how to prevent wildfires.

Carbondale, Ill.

2:59-3:03 p.m.

Just past the Mississippi River is Carbondale, Ill., which has billed itself the “Eclipse Crossroads of America” because it sat in the path of the 2017 eclipse.

At this point in the path, the weather forecast becomes critical for eclipse seekers. The areas from here on are typically cloudier in April than the previous areas, according to an analysis of cloud cover data.

3:13-3:17 p.m.

The eclipse crosses the Cleveland Guardians’s baseball stadium on the team's home opener at about 3:15 p.m. But rather than be interrupted by nearly four minutes of darkness, the game will start two hours after the moon’s shadow passes by.

An influential eclipse

The eclipse next passes over land historically populated by the Haudenosaunee, also known as the Iroquois. Researchers disagree on when the Iroquois Confederacy was established. But tribal oral history indicates the Seneca joined the alliance shortly after witnessing a solar eclipse, which researchers suggest occurred in this area in 1142.

Burlington, Vt.

3:25-3:28 p.m.

About 13,000 schools are in the path of totality, including more than 300 in Vermont. Some plan to incorporate experiencing the eclipse into their lessons, but others plan to let kids out of school early to help avoid traffic bottlenecks.

Piscataquis County, Maine

3:30-3:34 p.m.

The final 150 miles of the Appalachian Trail lie in the path of totality, including Mount Katahdin, the highest point in Maine.

Gulf of St. Lawrence

3:32-3:35 p.m.

The eclipse finally passes over Prince Edward Island before its last hurrah over Newfoundland in Canada, completing its North American journey in a bit more than two hours.

7 Useful Apps Every Traveler Should Know About

Technology continues to make travel easier for millions of people around the globe. New apps offer travelers fresh ways to research a destination, connect with fellow globetrotters, communicate with locals, and track their flights. As a full-time digital nomad , I’ve learned the importance of having the right tools at your disposal when on the road.

Over the past few years, I’ve visited dozens of countries, flown hundreds of thousands of miles, and tested countless apps to find the ones that prove to be the most helpful. And while tools like Meetup, Google Maps, Google Translate, currency converters, and vacation rental , airline, and hotel–specific apps are in fact indispensable on most trips, I find that many of the best travel apps are still undiscovered by my fellow travelers.

Below, seven travel apps that make life on the go markedly easier (and more fun), from real-time flight trackers to photo-sharing gems—all of these apps are free, but some have paid pro versions worth considering. Don’t think these apps are only for full-time travelers—they prove useful for every type of traveler, whether you're in a brand-new destination or back for a return visit.

My favorite app on this list is Flighty, a must-have for any frequent flier . The free version is fantastic, but I recommend splurging for the premium version, which gives you even more useful information and comes at a reasonable cost of $48 per year. The functionality it provides more than justifies the price.

The free version allows you to input all future flights plus past journeys you've taken within the last year. It provides updated information if any schedule changes occur to upcoming flights and allows you to track all the miles you’ve flown in one place.

The other main benefit is that it allows you to share your flight information with friends and family members who are also on Flighty. They will receive real-time updates about your flight without you having to text them. My parents love to make sure I’m safe so they appreciate getting detailed information about my travels—even while I’m in the air.

Flightradar24 is a favorite app among fellow aviation geeks. It lets you track almost any aircraft you see in the air throughout the day or night. You can track your own flight, a friend's flight, or any plane you see in real-time. It shares plenty of cool data, like the altitude, speed, arrival and departure airports and times, and tail number.

There are tons of eSIM apps on the market, but Airalo is probably my favorite, with digital SIM cards available for dozens of countries. I find it to be the most reliable and offers the best data packages. It can be a little pricey, but it is the best option if you’re only taking short trips. Holafly is another eSIM app that offers unlimited data and works well, but I find the app to be much more glitchy than Airalo and would recommend using the desktop version.

This one is for the planner of the group. Wanderlog merges the best of a bunch of different apps into one. Imagine an app that lets you plan a trip with ease: collaborate with friends as if you’re on Google Docs, manage expense tracking like Splitwise, and have a central place for your reservations, checklists, and more. Tripit is a similar travel planner app, so you can download both and get a feel for which interface you like better.

Been allows you to track the countries you’ve visited and make a wish list of places you can’t wait to cross off your travel bucket list . It gives you information like the percentage of the globe you’ve been to and shows you a world map of your trips. It’s always fun to add in a new country whenever I reach my destination.

This app was introduced to me by fellow nomads I met at a cafe in Montevideo, Uruguay . It automatically tracks your route across the world, allowing you to quickly upload pictures throughout your travels that can be viewed by anyone who has access to your profile. It’s an excellent way to share important moments with loved ones without needing to send photos to each person individually. Users can also create easily accessible guides filled with up-to-date information to help you plan your own trip.

Steller is another app that a friend recently introduced me to, and I’ve quickly fallen in love with it. It uses a combination of AI and user experiences to help you plan trips around the globe. From recommendations of things to see, like the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires or the Royal Palace of Naples, to full guidebooks created by users, you can get inspired, book experiences, and discover hidden gems within this app.
