DOT Chief: Philippines surpasses yearend target with 5.45 million int’l visitor arrivals in 2023, int’l visitor receipts surge at PHP482.54 billion

philippine tourism campaign 2023

Manila, Philippines —The year 2023 is a win for the Philippine tourism industry as it welcomed more than five million international visitor arrivals from January 1 to December 31, 2023, recording more than PHP480 billion in international tourism receipts, according to Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco.

According to the monitoring data of the DOT, a total of 5,450,557 international visitors entered the country from January 1 to December 31, 2023, of which 91.80 percent or the bulk of international arrivals recorded at 5,003,475 are foreigners. The remaining 8.20 percent or 447,082 are overseas Filipinos.

The new record is around 650,000 higher than its target of 4.8 million international visitors projected to visit the country for the entire year.

South Korea retains its top spot as the country’s main source of international visitors, getting 26.41 percent of the pie which delivered 1,439,336 foreign tourists. It was followed by the United States with 903,299 tourists (16.57 percent) visiting the country; then Japan with 305,580 (5.61 percent); Australia with 266,551 (4.89 percent); and China with 263,836 (4.84 percent).

Other foreigners who visited the country from other top source markets after China were from Canada, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Surge in International Tourism Receipts

The tourism chief likewise emphasized that the country’s local tourism industry is recovering faster than expected.

The country’s international tourism receipts have surged at an estimate of PHP482.54 billion from January 1 to December 31, 2023. This is higher by 124.87 percent compared with the PHP214.58 billion estimated visitor receipts from the same period last year. In 2019 or pre-pandemic period, the DOT recorded PHP482.15 billion in international tourism receipts.

The Philippines has also reached an estimated 66 percent recovery rate for its all-time high international visitor arrivals achieved in 2019.

By 2024, the DOT is targeting a baseline target of 7.7 million international visitor arrivals.

“My deepest appreciation goes to every tourism stakeholder, collaborative partner, and passionate contributor who propelled our shared aspirations forward. Under President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.’s guiding vision and leadership, tourism has become a pivotal force driving our nation’s economic resurgence,” said Secretary Frasco,

“These numbers speak very well of the performance of the tourism industry under the Marcos Administration. Since we took office, we have set our goals for the industry not only in terms of international visitor arrivals but most importantly, the number of Filipinos, including their families, who will benefit from the opportunities generated by our constant and continuous efforts to make the industry prosper more than what we have aimed for. We assure the President, including our partners from the public and private sectors, that we will continue to realize the vision of this administration to make tourism a catalyst for economic growth and resurgence,” she added.

Realization of NTDP goals

In May 2023, President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. approved the National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) 2023 to 2028, the administration’s blueprint and development framework for the tourism industry, officials said Tuesday.

It contains the DOT’s seven strategic goals formulated under the helm of Secretary Frasco, which is the improvement of tourism infrastructure and accessibility; cohesive and comprehensive digitalization and connectivity; enhancement of overall tourist experience; equalization of tourism product development and promotion; diversification of the tourism portfolio through multidimensional tourism; maximization of domestic and international tourism; and strengthening tourism governance through close collaborations with national and local government units and stakeholders.

Flagship Projects and Programs of the DOT in 2023

On the directive of Secretary Frasco, the DOT embarked on an aggressive campaign to realize the Marcos Administration’s vision of making the Philippines a tourism powerhouse in Asia.

Among others, the DOT successfully turned over 10 Tourist Rest Areas (TRAs) in strategic locations nationwide, with 18 more to be built this 2024. A flagship program of the Marcos Administration, the TRAs are equipped with facilities such as work and charging stations, information, and pasalubong centers, and clean restrooms and showers, a lounge area, and a breastfeeding room.

In less than two years of office, the DOT was able to complete 158 kilometers of roads leading to tourism destinations across the country in a bid to increase connectivity in tourist destinations through its Tourism Road Infrastructure Program (TRIP) in collaboration with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

To further provide convenience to tourists in terms of mobility while discovering destinations around the Philippine capital, two Hop-On Hop-Off (HOHO) Travel by The Hubs were also inaugurated in the cities of Manila and Makati. Four additional hubs are also planned to be launched with six local LGUs in Metro Manila as partners.

The DOT is also expanding the country’s cruise tourism portfolio by receiving a total of 125 cruise calls in 2023.

The DOT also launched the country’s first Tourist Assistance Call Center, a centralized multi-platform assistance center that serves as a hotline and one-stop shop for local and foreign tourists. Since its launching in October, a total of 2,497 transactions have been made as of December 31, 2023.

An aggregate of 33,435 app downloads have also been recorded since the launching of the integrated Travel Philippines App, a project of the DOT and its marketing arm, Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines.

Meanwhile, 21,195 tourism-related jobs were also offered at the Trabaho, Turismo, Asenso Job Fairs–Trabaho Turismo Asenso Philippine Tourism Job Fairs, a collaborative effort by the DOT and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

With the Philippines being known as one of the most hospitable countries in the world, 126,343 tourism workers were trained for the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence (FBSE) as of December 31, 2023, surpassing the initial 100,000 set by no less than the tourism chief.

Initiated by the DOT, the FBSE training program is rooted in the 7M’s of core values that Filipinos are widely known for: Malikhain, Makatao, Makakalikasan, Makabansa, Masayahin, May Bayanihan, and May Pag-asa, and designed to promote service excellence in all tourism-related establishments.

Generating more sales leads

Abundant tourism revenue from international and local business-to-business and promotional events also concluded in 2023 for the Philippine tourism industry.

An estimated PHP6.317 billion total sales leads have been delivered through the DOT’s attached agency, Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines, which has been actively carrying out marketing and promotions, mounting  of international and domestic travel fairs, and participating in major expos locally and abroad.

“Looking ahead to 2024, our commitment to the transformation of Philippine tourism is unwavering. Guided by our National Tourism Development Plan 2023-2028, we are poised for a thriving tourism landscape, evident in surpassing our targets in international and domestic arrivals and receipts, fostering economic prosperity and further job creation for our people,”  said Secretary Frasco.

The New Philippines

Reintroducing The Philippines into the global tourism arena, the country , represented by Secretary Frasco, has been elected Vice President of the 25th General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), a prestigious global position last held by the country more than two decades ago.  Likewise, The  Philippines, with Secretary Frasco’s representation, was also elected as Chair of the Commission for East Asia and the Pacific allowing the country to host the Joint Regional Meetings of the Committee for East Asia and the Pacific and South Asia in Cebu in 2024.

Consistent top-of-mind destination

The past year for the tourism industry may have been a mix of challenges and successes, but as recognized by preeminent award-giving bodies and publications, the Philippines remains a top-of-mind destination among travelers.

This was signified by the six major accolades from the World Travel Awards (WTA) received by the country as 2023 World’s Leading Dive Destination, World’s Leading Beach Destination, the World’s Leading City Destination for Manila as well as Asia’s Best Cruise Destination, and Asia’s Leading Dive Destination. For the first time, the Philippines also earned the spotlight on its inaugural win for the Global Tourism Resilience Award for demonstrating “global leadership, pioneering vision, and innovation to overcome critical challenges and adversity.”

The Philippines, during the previous year, also garnered more than 15 travel and tourism honors from prestigious award-giving bodies in the categories including diving, beach, cruise, culinary, retirement, and Muslim-friendly tourism, “a testament that the Philippines is indeed an emerging tourism powerhouse.” according to Secretary Frasco.

“The extraordinary journey of Philippine tourism in 2023 saw the world express its LOVE for the Philippines with our country’s rise to global prominence as the World’s Leading Beach and Dive Destination, and Asia’s Best Cruise Destination, among many other accolades. The indomitable spirit of the Filipino has been globally acclaimed with the Philippines receiving the Global Tourism Resilience Award with our country seen as a benchmark for innovation amidst trials and challenges,”  enthused the tourism chief.

“Looking ahead to 2024, our commitment to the transformation of Philippine tourism is unwavering. Guided by our National Tourism Development Plan 2023-2028, we are poised for a thriving tourism landscape, evident in surpassing our targets in international and domestic arrivals and receipts, fostering economic prosperity and further job creation for our people,”  Frasco added.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) recently unveiled a new tourism campaign slogan “Love the Philippines,” replacing the 11-year-old “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” brand in a bid to offer not only fun, but also meaningful travel experience.

“Love the Philippines goes to the very heart of every single Filipino. With the distinct grace and hospitality with which we welcome every guest that comes into our shores, our communities, and our homes,” Tourism Sec. Christina Garcia-Frasco said during the launch in Manila, emphasizing that with this initiative, the country intends to showcase the many reasons to love the Philippines, besides the leisure and fun aspect.

“Love the Philippines is a recognition of our assets, our long history, our rich culture, and diversity,” she added.

The Philippines holds fiestas the whole year round.

‘Yung Love the Philippines is an effort para naman mabigyan natin ‘yung ating bansa ng pagkakataon na i-market natin sya dito at sa buong mundo. Not just on the aspect of fun, but on all the other aspects of our beautiful country including our culture, heritage, food, people, our various activities, talents, indigenous people. There are so many reasons to love the Philippines,” she further said.

Frasco also noted the excitement the Filipinos expressed as a response to the new campaign and assured the public that it is just the start of many tourism enhancement initiatives. She hopes that it will be a sustainable campaign highlighting every corner of the country.

What to expect?

Meaningful Experience

According to DDB Group Philippines’ Brand and Strategic Planner Marie Adriano, who led the creation of the idea, the new campaign reflects the changing travel landscape where tourists of the post-pandemic seek to travel for meaningful and real-world experiences.

“We call them the ‘changed traveler’ for the very reason that traveling has come to mean more than just leisure,” she said. She also added that changed travelers look for experiences that are unique and where they can immerse themselves in other cultures.

It can be remembered that the DOT launched the Philippine Experience and Bisita Be My Guest program in the first quarter of 2023, centered around the extraordinary identity of Filipinos and its defining cultural values and attributes as a nation.

In the released promotional video of Love the Philippines, it highlights the different aspects the country has to offer, including adventure. Included in the tourism efforts of the administration is the exploration of unpopular destinations in the country.

Last May 28, 2023, the DOT National Capital Region recently launched the “Hop On, Hop Off (HOHO): Travel by the Hubs” in Makati City that provided convenient transportation to tourists interested in exploring the uncharted tourist spots inside the 17 cities in the National Capital Region.

Accordingly, Tourism Chief Frasco said that the HOHO tourism bus will be duplicated in other regions.

The Philippines is a foodie's paradise. Each of its 17 regions is blessed with an abundance of seafood, vegetables, fruits, and exotic ingredients. This diversity of produce has given rise to a wide variety of delicious and colorful dishes that are sure to tantalize your taste buds.

With more than 7,000 islands, travelers can expect a ton of delicious and colorful dishes and gastronomic adventures.

Did you know that each day there is one fiesta celebrated in the Philippines? Either in a province, city, municipality, or even barangay or village. Fiestas are a major event in the country and a time for people to come together to celebrate their faith, culture, and community.

philippine tourism campaign 2023

Religious festivals and old churches are also tourist attractions in different parts of country.

Fiestas are usually held in honor of the town's patron saint. The festivities typically start with a religious procession, followed by a week of activities such as street dancing, beauty pageants, concerts, and food fairs.

The Philippines is a land of rich natural beauty and cultural diversity. From the ancient walls of Intramuros in Manila to the revolving tower restaurant in Pasig City, to the white-sand beach of Manila Bay, there is something for everyone to love in the Philippines.

The country is also home to a vibrant culture that is a blend of Malay, Chinese, Spanish, and American influences.

But the Philippines is more than just a beautiful place to visit. It is also a country with a rich history and a proud people. The Philippines has been through a lot in its history, but it has always emerged stronger. The Filipino people are known for their resilience, their hospitality, and their love of life.

“There is so much more to the Philippines than the fun and adventure that we have so far articulated to the world. Fore the Philippines is a powerhouse of mega biodiversity, being only one of 18 mega biodiverse countries in the world. A deep well of culture and history, a profound burst and taste of flavor and gastronomy, a tapestry of indigenous peoples and creative communities whose work of their hands have safeguarded the dignity and integrity of the Filipino identity,” Sec. Frasco said. (PIA-NCR)

Department of Tourism Celebrates 50th Anniversary. Highlights Enhanced Tourism Campaign: Love The Philippines

Department of tourism (dot) celebrates golden anniversary..

Department of Tourism Celebrates Golden Anniversary. The 50th founding year celebration was held last night, June 27,2023 at The Tent City, The Manila Hotel. Graced by President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., together with Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco and other officials, who also led the unveiling of the country’s enhanced tourism campaign  “Love the Philippines”

philippine tourism campaign 2023

Proudly presenting “Love the Philippines” to a crowd composed of former DOT chiefs, officials and employees of the Department's central and regional offices, heads of government agencies including Cabinet Secretaries, house representatives, tourism stakeholders, and the media, Secretary Frasco described the enhanced campaign as timely for the DOT’s 50th-anniversary celebration.

DOT’s enhanced branding is Philippines’ Love Letter to the world

“As we cap the last fifty years of the DOT and welcome this new era of tourism for the Philippines, it is but right that we welcome this opportunity to reintroduce the Philippines to the world,” Secretary Frasco said.

philippine tourism campaign 2023

"There is so much more to the Philippines than “the fun and adventure” that has so far been articulated to the world.  The Philippines is a powerhouse of mega biodiversity, being only one of 18 mega biodiverse countries in the world, a deep well of culture and history, a profound burst and taste of flavor and gastronomy, a tapestry of indigenous peoples and creative communities by whose work of their hands have safeguarded the dignity and integrity of the Filipino identity. This is who we are. These complexities and nuances of the Philippines have yet to be fully articulated to the world for indeed, the story of the Filipino has yet to be fully told, and we shall tell that story by telling them the story of love. Love the Philippines,” - Secretary Frasco

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. expressed his utmost support for "Love the Philippines", saying that the enhanced tourism campaign “springs from the genuine love that you, me, and all of us have for the Philippines.”

philippine tourism campaign 2023

“And what better way to express that love than by directly incorporating it into our country’s newest tourism campaign slogan, Love the Philippines. This new branding which we unveil today, will serve as our guidepost for the Philippine tourism industry moving forward. Allow me then to express my sincerest appreciation to Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco and for the DOT team, because aside from the promotion of the country’s tourist destinations, the campaign that you have conceptualized aims to enhance the overall experience of every travel, included in that list of targets are to promote regional products, build more infrastructure for ease of travel, and champion green movements, among others,” the President enthused.

Adjusting to the post-pandemic tourism landscape and changing trends.  With the everchanging global tourism landscape post-pandemic and the growing desire of travelers for more immersive experiences in their travels, the DOT viewed the enhanced brand as a timely response to the demands of the industry.

In a recent survey conducted by the United Nations World Travel Organization (UNWTO) among its member countries, market repositioning and rebranding strategies is among the priorities identified after the pandemic based on its Survey Findings on Member Priorities for UNWTO program of work 2024-2025.

With an enhanced tourism campaign in tow, the DOT’s focus now is to show more of what there is to “Love the Philippines” as it works towards the realization of President Marcos, Jr.’s vision for the country to become a tourism powerhouse in Asia.

philippine tourism campaign 2023

“We have multiple facets of tourism destinations that present a golden opportunity for we have only scratched the surface thus far,” she added.

According to Secretary Frasco, “The world has noticed that there is so much to love about the Philippines.”   This is as the Philippines has recorded 2,641,993 visitors from January 1 to June 26, 2023, and is close to breaching the 2.65 million arrivals it recorded for 2022.

Further, the tourism sector is regarded as a stalwart as far as its contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) is concerned. According to the 2022 Philippine Tourism Satellite Accounts (PTSA) for 2022, the Tourism Direct Gross Value Added (TDGVA) share of the sector to the Philippine economy, as measured by the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), was estimated at 6.2 percent and amounted to PHP 1.38 trillion in 2022.

The Philippines is also seeing a boost in tourism-related enterprise employment, with 5.35 million estimated tourism employment last year.

philippine tourism campaign 2023

As she rallied their support for the DOT’s vision of showcasing the best of the Philippines to the world under the Marcos administration, the Secretary said: “As we usher in this golden era for tourism, for our fellow Filipinos, for our beautiful country, let us find it in our hearts to have that burning pride of place for the Philippines, to Love the Philippines, to usher us into the continued recovery and vigorous comeback of the Philippines to the world.”

The Philippines sets ambitious 2024 tourism target after remarkable rebound in 2023

philippine tourism campaign 2023

In a new move to revitalize its tourism sector, the Philippines Department of Tourism (DOT) has set an ambitious target of 7.7 million international visitors for the year 2024. The goal is just shy of its pre-pandemic count of 8.2 million. Tourism Secretary, Christina Frasco, expressed the unwavering commitment to the transformation of Philippine tourism, guided by the National Tourism Development Plan 2023-2028.

The announcement comes after a successful 2023, where the country welcomed 5,450,557 international visitors, surpassing the initial target of 4.8 million set by DOT. 91.80% of these visitors were foreigners, while 447,082 were overseas Filipinos returning to their homeland.

Notably, the Philippines experienced an economic boost, generating an estimated 482.54 billion PHP in international tourism revenue in 2023. The number is more than doubling the income recorded in 2022.

Frasco pointed out that the impressive number of visitors in 2023 indicate a faster-than-expected recovery of the tourism industry, with a 124.87% increase compared to 2022.

Local tour operators have reported a 30% increase in bookings to popular destinations such as: Boracay, Siargao, Coron, Davao and Cebu. This indicating a strong rebound in domestic tourism. The increase is attributed to the effectiveness of aggressive promotional campaigns to re-establish the Philippines as a premier travel destination.

Beyond Expectations: Philippine Tourism Soars in 2023

philippine tourism campaign 2023

THE SUN HAS SET ON 2023, and for Philippine tourism, it’s a golden sunset reflecting a year of exceeding expectations. From record-breaking visitor numbers to international accolades, the industry has roared back to life, painting a vibrant picture of resilience and growth.

Beyond Targets:

  • Foreign arrivals surpassed the 4.8 million target, hitting a dazzling 5 million by December 12th.
  • Tourist receipts smashed through 2022’s figures, reaching PHP439.5 billion as of November, just a whisper away from pre-pandemic levels.
  • South Korea led the charge as the top source market, followed by the US, Japan, China, and Australia.

Growth Engine:

  • Tourism Secretary Frasco hailed the industry as a “strongest pillar” of the economy, generating employment for over 5.35 million Filipinos.
  • Infrastructure projects like rest areas, roads, and flights received a big push, with 18 more rest areas planned for 2024 and PHP16 billion invested in tourism roads.
  • International seat capacity recovered to nearly 80% of pre-pandemic levels, with Frasco actively pursuing direct flights from key markets like France, UK, and Italy.

philippine tourism campaign 2023

Unrivaled Charm:

  • The Philippines once again captivated the world, winning “World’s Leading Dive Destination” and “World’s Leading Beach Destination” at the prestigious World Travel Awards.
  • “Global Tourism Resilience Award” and “World’s Leading City Destination” for Manila cemented the country’s leadership in travel and hospitality.

philippine tourism campaign 2023

Beyond Beaches:

  • The new “Love the Philippines” campaign showcased the nation’s diverse tapestry of culture, heritage, and history, not just sun and sand.
  • Initiatives like the “Philippine Experience Programs” explored lesser-known destinations and enriched understanding of local traditions.

Cautious Optimism:

  • With a 7.7 million target set for 2024, experts see potential, but remain cautious about relying solely on traditional markets like China and Japan.
  • LPC expects Southeast Asian neighbors and the Korean market to play a key role in achieving this target.
  • Increased foreign investment in tourism infrastructure projects like the New Manila International Airport offer promising signs for future growth.

philippine tourism campaign 2023

A Year of Triumph:

Overall, 2023 has been a remarkable year for Philippine tourism. With resilience, innovation, and a focus on diversifying its offerings, the industry has not only met its goals but exceeded them, setting a bright stage for continued success in the years to come.

FUTURE-FORWARD: WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE PHILIPPINES TOURISM IN 2024

2023’s performance carries both promising and challenging implications for Philippine tourism in 2024:

  • Strong Momentum: Exceeding 2023’s targets builds confidence and momentum for 2024. The industry has proven its ability to attract visitors and generate revenue, even amid global challenges.
  • Diversification: The “Love the Philippines” campaign and focus on lesser-known destinations offer greater resilience against potential slowdowns in traditional markets like China and Japan.
  • Infrastructure Developments: Investments in rest areas, roads, and airports improve accessibility and attractiveness, potentially boosting arrival numbers.
  • Foreign Investment: Increased interest from foreign investors shows confidence in the sector’s potential, leading to potentially faster growth and development.
  • Government Support: The DOT’s continued efforts in marketing, infrastructure, and direct flight negotiations demonstrate commitment to the industry’s success.

Challenges:

  • Reaching the 7.7 million target: While achievable, it depends on attracting new markets and mitigating potential slowdowns in existing ones. Southeast Asia and Korea offer promising growth, but further diversification might be needed.
  • Global Uncertainties: Economic slowdowns in key source markets and geopolitical issues could hamper travel, requiring adaptability and targeted marketing.
  • Seasonality: The industry remains heavily reliant on peak seasons, creating pressure to extend tourist flows throughout the year.
  • Sustainability: Balancing rapid growth with environmental and cultural preservation is crucial to ensure long-term success.

2024 holds immense potential for Philippine tourism. The industry’s momentum, diversification efforts, and government support provide a strong foundation. However, addressing challenges like market diversification, external uncertainties, and seasonality will be crucial to achieving ambitious goals and ensuring sustainable growth.

Staying agile, focusing on unique selling points, and investing in sustainable practices will be key to navigating 2024 and securing a bright future for Philippine tourism.

Remember: This is a general analysis. Further research and data on specific market trends and competitor strategies would be necessary for a more detailed assessment of 2024’s outlook.

Agency behind ‘Love the Philippines’ tourism video sorry for using shots of other countries

Agency DDB Philippines apologises for using ‘highly inappropriate’ images that stock footage providers offer from Brazil and Indonesia

A tourism campaign for the Philippines backfired after the creators of a video promoting the archipelago nation as a holiday destination said it had used stock shots from other countries.

Advertising agency DDB Philippines apologised on Sunday for the “highly inappropriate” images, which included rice terraces in Indonesia and sand dunes in Brazil.

The agency was behind the video for the government’s $900,000 “Love the Philippines” tourism campaign , which launched on 27 June.

Philippines tourism campaign uses stock footage from other countries – video

The tourism ministry said the previous day it was investigating allegations that DDB’s video included “non-original shots”, and the video was later removed from its Facebook page.

Tourism is a key industry in the Philippines, which boasts pristine dive spots and white sand beaches, but arrivals lag those of its neighbours due to poor infrastructure and high costs.

There were 2.7 million inbound tourists to the Philippines last year, down 68% from pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to data from the UN’s World Tourism Organisation.

Questions emerged after popular Philippine blogger Sass Rogando Sasot posted on Facebook that several images in the campaign video were from other countries.

Analysis by Agence France-Presse’s Fact Check team confirmed that the video showed places in Brazil, Indonesia, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates.

DDB apologised on Sunday for using “foreign stock footage”, describing it as an “unfortunate oversight on our agency’s part”.

“Proper screening and approval processes should have been strictly followed,” DDB said in a statement. “The use of foreign stock footage in a campaign promoting the Philippines is highly inappropriate, and contradictory to the DOT’s [Department of Tourism’s] objectives.”

The video was produced at its own expense, DDB said.

The tourism ministry said in its statement it had “repeatedly sought confirmation from DDB on the originality and ownership of all materials contained in the AVPs (audio-visual presentations) and key visuals presented to the department”.

“In all these occasions, DDB repeatedly assured the DOT that the originality and ownership of all materials are in order,” the ministry said.

Some of the images used in the promotional video can be found on the websites of stock footage providers.

For example, footage of rice terraces is on Pond5, which identified the location as Ubud on the Indonesian tourist island of Bali.

Videvo has the same aerial shot of sand dunes as the one used in the Philippine ad but says the location was Cumbuco in north-eastern Brazil.

Other footage shows a fisherman casting a net while wearing a hat that is not typically worn in the Philippines and a person driving a buggy over sand dunes in the United Arab Emirates.

A spokeswoman for the tourism ministry did not respond to requests for comment on Sunday.

The tourism minister, Christina Frasco, told local media last week the new branding campaign cost 49m pesos (nearly $900,000).

Frasco said the ministry conducted a global survey which found that, in the post-pandemic era, tourists wanted “authentic interactions with communities”.

The new slogan replaced “It’s more fun in the Philippines”.

New Philippines Tourism Campaign Gives Props to Local Workers

Mary Ann Ha , Skift

June 6th, 2022 at 2:00 PM EDT

The Department of Tourism Philippine's newest video is the epitome of "talk about creative advertising" — performers mold their bodies into birds, mountains, waterfalls, and oceans to remind tourists that there are workers behind every tourism experience, and that they deserve recognition.

Mary Ann Ha

In the face of one of the most longheld problems in tourism — the tourist’s inability to respect the connection between the land and the true community, often resulting in the appropriation of both the destination and culture   — the newest ad from the Department of Tourism of the Philippines chooses to speak to the phenomenon directly.

“For years, we have shone the spotlight on the country’s stunning beaches and landscapes, its marvelous heritage sites and natural attractions,” reads the video caption on their Facebook page, “As tourism begins to pick up anew, we recognize the people who have always made our destinations more memorable and more fun — our tourism workers.”

The nearly two-minute advertisement, titled “The People Make the Destination”, takes place entirely in a studio. It acts almost as an art film, silently stating in the beginning that there was no use of any aerial drone footage, flashy photography, special effects, or actors involved in the making of the video.

Instead, energetic and elegant dancers fill the camera frame, using their painted limbs to play out landscapes, animals, and famous natural monuments throughout the Philippines. These performers are in constant movement throughout the entire video, as they twist and turn their bodies to provide the props and sets that would have otherwise been bought and sourced in filming a normal tourism ad.

In addition to visually depicting major natural sites and outdoor activities, the advertisement uses audio that is composed of raw soundbites from 23 locations all throughout the country, from “crashing waves in Samar” to the drumming sound of La Union’s best percussionist.

During a time when we see travel campaign after travel campaign hoping to grab the Western tourist’s attention with trendy pop songs or upbeat advertisement jingles, the Department of Tourism Philippines stayed loyal to what they know the beauty of their country can truly offer, regardless of whether it might seem less attractive to the party-goer or adrenaline-junkie.

A Message Long Overdue

Tourism is about desire, and to market a desirable product, it’s irrefutable that curation has to be a factor. However, curated content in tourism campaigns, especially when it involves bringing camera crews to untouched natural sites or depicting “happy” natives whose homes are being flaunted as exotic places to pose in front of, can quickly become harmful to both the location and the integrity of the local culture.

Like the recent project by the Philippines tourism team indicates, tourism organizations need to show a stronger willingness, no matter how desperate they get with lower pandemic numbers, to communicate that “fun” as a tourist doesn’t appear out of thin air. It doesn’t wash up on beaches, or grow from palm trees, and is most certainly not a free entitlement. It grows from the workers who make sure to carefully curate a seamless “paradise” experience, it’s built by the management and the service employees who are repeatedly forced to blend into the background, and is gifted by the natives and locals who are willing to open their backyards to outsiders so that they might be able to share the joy of their homeland to others as well.

With a deeper recognition of this messaging, tourists will not only keep this newly-found respect for the people at the front of mind, but will also hopefully have a stronger dedication towards respecting the land and prioritizing nature preservation and climate consciousness when traveling.

Dubai Cares, a civil society organisation formally associated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications (UN DGC), is a registered non-government organisation under IACAD, the charitable activities regulator in Dubai.

The UAE community can support “Gaza In Our Hearts” through various donation channels including SMS via Etisalat by e& and du, online at www.dubaicares.ae, direct bank transfers to a designated Dubai Cares account, or by cheque addressed to Dubai Cares.

The PBC will organise a Ramadan event on March 23 at 10pm at Sheikh Maktoum Hall, Dubai World Trade Centre. The event will host representatives from both Dubai Cares and ANERA, who will shed light on the campaign’s pillars, the implementation process, and the urgent support needed from the community.

Dr Tariq Al Gurg, CEO and Vice-Chairman of Dubai Cares, said: “The people of Gaza are facing severe food insecurity and shelter shortages amidst an ongoing conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced more than 1.9 million people. As part of the UAE’s humanitarian efforts to provide urgent assistance to the Palestinian people, Dubai Cares has launched the ‘Gaza In Our Hearts’ campaign through which we aim to provide a platform for the UAE community to come together and provide tangible and urgent support.”

He added: “These donations will contribute towards the provision of hot meals, food baskets and shelter tents for the people of Gaza. To ensure the rapid and effective supply of emergency relief, we have teamed up with our long-standing partner, ANERA, who is working closely with the United Nations, and diplomatic and non-governmental organisation partners to open aid corridors to enable it to urgently deliver life-saving aid.”

Malek Melhem, Chairman of the PBC, said: “Our support to ‘Gaza In Our Hearts’ campaign stems from the PBC’s commitment towards Palestine in general and Gaza in particular. It comes in response to the call of humanitarian duty that everyone must fulfil by providing the necessary support to alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza in these difficult and exceptional times.”
