Dave Chappelle And Joe Rogan Are Doing A ‘Socially Distanced’ Residency In Texas As COVID Surges In The State

Kimberly Ricci

Dave Chappelle’s been enjoying time in Texas lately, including a three-night comedy engagement , along with appearing on an episode of Joe Rogan’s (newly) Austin-based Spotify podcast. They must have enjoyed the mutual vibes (and perhaps mutual questionable judgment regarding live shows?) because they are again joining forces for a December 2020 residency in Austin. The duo’s team-up will last for five engagements, and Chappelle will hold separate “Dave Chappelle and Friends” dates for a total of ten dates.

In doing so, Chappelle will return to Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater, an outdoor venue connected to Stubb’s BBQ restaurant. The press release specifies a number of Covid-19 related precautions, including socially distanced tables that must be reserved by groups of only 4,6, or 8 tickets. Masks will be required (unless people are eating or drinking), and hand-sanitizer stations, along with staggered entry to the venue, will be monitored. “Safety is a top priority” is being quoted in the residency announcement, but of course, any group event (even with declared social distancing) amid skyrocketing cases is probably not the wisest move. Here are those dates:

Dave Chappelle and Joe Rogan Tuesday, December 8, 2020 Wednesday, December 9, 2020 Friday, December 11, 2020 Tuesday, December 15, 2020 Wednesday, December 16, 2020 Dave Chappelle and Friends Saturday, December 12, 2020 Sunday, December 13, 2020 Friday December 18, 2020 Saturday December 19, 2020 Sunday December 20, 2020

Tickets will go on sale beginning on Friday, December 4.

Dave Chappelle and Joe Rogan plot Nashville show at Bridgestone Arena

joe rogan dave chappelle tour

A one-two punch of A-list comedy heads to Bridgestone Arena this fall for a night of stand-up.

Dave Chappelle and Joe Rogan co-headline the downtown Nashville venue Sept. 3, a Friday night. The show kicks off at 8 p.m., per a news release.

Tickets go on sale June 25 at 10 a.m. via ticketmaster.com .

Chappelle and Rogan previously scheduled a Nashville stop for April 2020, prior to COVID-19 shuttering virtually all live events.

The show comes as part of a weekend run that continues Sept. 4 in New Orleans. It comes during a busy Labor Day weekend in Middle Tennessee, as Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival returns Sept. 2-5 to Manchester.

Chappelle stayed busy during the pandemic, hosting "Saturday Night Live," releasing multiple comedy specials — including "8:46," a performance piece in response to George Floyd's death that Nashville-based Third Man released on vinyl — and launching "The Midnight Miracle," a podcast with Talib Kweli and yasiin bey.

A tenured comedian and media personality, Rogan may be best known off stage for his UFC commentary and chart-topping podcast, "The Joe Rogan Experience."

As with all Chappelle dates, the show prohibits all recording devices — including cell phones. Audience members with cell phones may be asked to place the device in a locked pouch during the show.

The comedians join a growing list of scheduled events for the arena this fall as concertgoers return to seats after more than a year of live music being sidelined due to COVID-19. Notable upcoming 2021 shows include Harry Styles (Oct. 1), Alan Jackson (Oct. 8), Chris Stapleton (Oct. 22-23) and Lauren Daigle (Nov. 19).

Dave Chappelle and Joe Rogan Announce Co-Headlining Arena Shows

A pair of massive gigs in Nashville and New Orleans are set for this September

Dave Chappelle and Joe Rogan Announce Co-Headlining Arena Shows

Months after performing together at a series of shows in Austin, Texas, Dave Chappelle and Joe Rogan have announced a pair of arena shows for later summer.

The two-date “tour” is set to take the comics to Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on September 3rd and New Orleans’ Smoothie King Center the following day on the 4th. Tickets to both events are set to go on sale June 25th at 10:00 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster . Even in such large venues, the power of a Chappelle-Rogan headlining bill could easily lead to sell-out crowds, so you might also want to check for passes here .

Despite Rogan’s less-than-delicate appraisal of vaccination efforts and his presence at the same Austin show that exposed Chappelle to COVID-19 , the New Orleans and Nashville events will require masks. A press release did not specify if vaccination proof will also be necessary, however attendees can expect a “no cell-phone zone” courtesy of Yondr pouches.

Chappelle’s close professional relationship with Rogan is just more proof of his ability to align himself with almost anybody. Most recently, he covered Radiohead’s “Creep” with Foo Fighters during their Madison Square Garden gig , launched a podcast with Mos Def and Talib Kweli , made up with Netflix after a beef over Chappelle’s Show , and teamed with Jack White’s Third Man Records for a vinyl release of his  8:46 special . He’s also set to be the first comedian to headline Summerfest’s main stage in Milwaukee this summer.

Meanwhile, Rogan was recently called “trash garbage” by Steve Albini .

Dave Chappelle’s New Orleans Show Made It Clear He’s Not the Victim

By Andrew Paul

Andrew Paul

Dave Chappelle and Joe Rogan ’s arena show in New Orleans, announced in June and later delayed after Rogan contracted Covid-19 in August, finally took place Thursday night.

Both comedians made damn sure everybody was aware of the hot water they’ve found themselves in — Rogan for his spurious vaccine-alternative claims, and, more recently, Chappelle for the controversy surrounding his Netflix special standup, The Closer . But the sold-out crowd of nearly 17,000 people was fervent in its support for the queer-theory-questioning, gender-binary-reinforcing comics. The fans were also adamant in their collective reasoning that nothing that’s been said by either man warranted introspection or criticism.

The show came less than a month after the release of The Closer , Chappelle’s sixth and final Netflix standup special, which netted him over $20 million. The special is a largely unfunny, often unsettling look at a comedian whose fame, fortune, and reputation ensures, for better or worse, that he never needs to evolve or self-reflect again.

The majority of The Closer ’s 72 minutes are spent justifying Chappelle’s antiquated views on gender, particularly his frustration with a trans community that “doesn’t get” his schtick. It closes with a straw-person argument regarding a white trans woman fan-turned-close-friend who recently died by suicide.

Netflix’s fallout from the special — and the subsequent fallout from its handling of that fallout — has been as absurd as it has been infuriating and avoidable. In an Internet of reinforcing bubbles, one might think that the online response perhaps ensured actual consequences for both the streaming giant and the self-ascribed G.O.A.T. comedian. Chappelle’s tone and demeanor last night suggested no such reflection, something that didn’t come as any real surprise, but was all the more unnerving amongst a crowd of thousands applauding for Hannah Gadsby gags and “I’m gonna get cancelled for this one” punchlines.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Chappelle and Rogan were prefaced by a trio of heavy-hitting, controversy-stoking comedians: Jeffrey Ross, Donnell Rawlings, and Tom Segura. Each laid into his own brand of aggressively masculine material, although Segura was the only one who could adequately justify the jokes. The rest regularly defaulted to a string of punchlines involving stereotypes such as effeminate men, and nagging women.

Joe Rogan was Joe Rogan. That is to say, a walking id of semiliterate machismo with just enough self-awareness to make him culpable for his fans’ outsized influence on pop culture.

“If you’re getting your vaccine advice from me, is that really my fault?” Rogan asked to uproarious laughter. To answer briefly: Yes. The Joe Rogan Experience is far and away the most listened-to podcast in America, with guests ranging from Elon Musk to Bernie Sanders and Ben Shapiro. Hearing Rogan hawk Ivermectin treatments for Covid-19 in lieu of proven, effective vaccines makes him an unequivocal accomplice to misinformation-peddling and pseudoscience. But, y’know, it’s all for the LOLZ.

Chappelle, unsurprisingly, took to the stage to a standing ovation.

“I haven’t been in this much trouble in my life,” he quipped early on to enthusiastic applause. On the one hand, it was refreshing to see the comedian perform a set without retreading his past material verbatim. On the other hand, his past performances would have been more palatable than listening to this hour-long roast of a supposed “PC culture.” A culture that, in all actuality, is really only asking for influential icons like Chappelle to acknowledge everyone’s humanity and quit with the cheap, open-mic jokes at others’ expense.

Unfortunately, at this stage in their respective careers, both Chappelle and Rogan will, in all likelihood, continue to rake in obscene amounts of money in literal echo-chamber arenas across the country . Despite what left-leaning social media bubbles may say, Chappelle has not only escaped this latest queer-phobic controversy unscathed, but is now bolstered by his fans, friends, and newly minted TERF allies. Shows like last night’s in New Orleans make it well known that the only thing “cancelled” comedians have to fear are stale punchlines and one-note sets. And even then, it’s hard to fear something that still makes you so much money.

Event Organizers of the Dave Chappelle and Joe Rogan show have postponed the Bridgestone Arena event on Friday, September 3, 2021. This show's new date is October 24, 2021. Please visit the event page for more information.

Dave Chappelle & Joe Rogan COVID Policies

Chappelle-Rogan_8-27_2568x1444.jpg

Effective Oct. 2, to attend all events at Bridgestone Arena, including Nashville Predators games, all guests aged 12 and older will be required to either show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or show a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test administered within 72 hours prior to the event (i) by a healthcare professional, or (ii) with a sample collected at home that is sent to a medical laboratory for processing with a link to the results that guests can print from a medical/lab based platform. The negative COVID-19 test results must include the guest’s name and the date of the test.

In order to avoid a strain on local COVID test inventory, the artists are making testing available on site at Bridgestone Arena (at the corner of 5th and Demonbreun).  For your convenience testing will be available Sept. 1-3 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Tests will be administered by VF Wellness USA at a cost of $50 per test.

To avoid congestion and long wait times each ticket holder will be assigned a time to receive their test. If you cannot make it to your assigned time, tests will be accepted from other locations and walk ups will be accepted prior to show day.

Do not wait until just prior to the concert to get your test, as this will delay your entry into the event and potentially lead to missing part of the show.

If you receive your test at a location other than Bridgestone Arena, please report in advance to be pre-screened prior to show time. Prescreening will take place at 5th and Demonbreun at the same day and time of testing.

Mask wearing is strongly encouraged and all fans will be given a mask upon entry.

Tennessee COVID Testing Sites – hyper link to https://covid19.tn.gov/testing-sites/

APPROVED BAGS: Medical bags, parenting bags and CLEAR 12" x 12" bags will be permitted following X-Ray screening. Backpacks of any kind are NOT permitted.

Guests attending events with approved bags will experience delayed entry times. For expedited entry, please leave bags at home.

‘The Joe Rogan Experience' Is Back on Apple Podcasts Following More Than Three-Year Absence After Spotify Gives Up Exclusivity

Joe Rogan's popular podcast is back on Apple Podcasts after a more than three-year hiatus.

Last Friday,  Spotify announced a multiyear deal renewal with Rogan that is worth as much as $250 million. Under the new pact, "The Joe Rogan Experience" will be widely distributed to third-party platforms including Apple Podcasts, YouTube and Amazon Music. In addition, Spotify is handling ad sales for Rogan's show, which consistently ranks as the No. 1 most-listened to podcast on the platform.

"JRE" had left Apple Podcasts in September 2020 because of Spotify's previous exclusive deal with the comedian and podcaster.

On Thursday, Rogan, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), wrote that "The Joe Rogan Experience" is now "officially back on @apple We should be back on @youtube with full episodes in the coming weeks."

Rogan also wrote, "Shoutout to @spotify for absolutely being the coolest and smartest people I've ever had the pleasure of being in partnership with. I'm very excited the podcast will now have a much broader distribution."

"The Joe Rogan Experience" originally launched Dec. 24, 2009, and has produced more than 2,200 episodes, each averaging 2-3 hours in length.

The show has caused some headaches for Spotify: In early 2022, Neil Young was among a handful of artists who pulled their music from the audio platform in protest of Rogan‘s statements about COVID vaccines on his podcast .

In announcing the renewed deal on Feb. 2, Spotify said it will work closely with Rogan and his team "to continue to maximize the audience of the show across platforms." Rogan will receive a guaranteed minimum fee from Spotify as well as a cut of advertising revenue.
