Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 Lbs

Travel trailers under 4000 lbs are starting to get bigger than those under 3000- or 2000 lbs . They're still small enough, but with the extra weight comes that bit of extra space and of course a bit more of the home comforts.

They give you that base and allow you to get away from the grind of the city and surround yourself with nature whenever you so please.

Smaller trailers have their advantage and of course drawbacks, and this is where getting a slightly bigger travel trailer under 4000 lbs gives you other advantages.

In this article, we have reviewed some of the best travel trailers under 4000 lbs. We also look at the advantages of owning a trailer this size so you can make a more informed decision before you go shopping.

What Makes a Quality Travel Trailer Under 4000 Lbs?

When considering your buying options for travel trailer under 4000 lbs, there's many things to consider. They're bigger than the lighter trailers so you will get more luxuries, but there are aspects to consider with every trailer you go for.

Solid Construction

The materials and construction of any travel trailer are significant. Even if your vehicle is small, it must have durable, sturdy, and soundproof walls. The insulation that comes from good construction not only helps maintain the structure intact when the weather gets terrible, but also keeps you warm, dry, and free of unwanted noise.

Good Floor Plan

A well-designed floor plan is important because it adds to the weight of the travel trailer. Some people prefer to include household features like as a dining area, kitchen, bathroom, and storage in their space.

Some campers have a stove, an off-the-ground sleeping area, solar panels, entertainment equipment, and so on. All of this adds weight to the equation, so a suitable floor plan may assist you in achieving a manageable weight for your trailer while also allowing you to keep the travel trailer under 4000 lbs.

Innovative and Modular Design

With such a restricted weight capacity, storage may be difficult. If at all feasible, the floor plan and components should be modular so that it is not just breathable but also pleasant. Convertible sofa beds are an excellent example of this. This makes room for more people without taking up important space inside the camper van.

Advantages of Having a Travel Trailer That’s Under 4000 lbs

Having a travel trailer under 4000 lbs threshold can help you in many ways. Here are some of the major perks that you get to enjoy with one of these.

Cheaper Vacations

All of us love cheap vacations, don’t we? A travel trailer helps you do it with both class and comfort. Yes, the initial investment is quite big, but you get to have cheap vacations for years. There are no expensive hotel rooms involved, so you get to explore more at lesser prices.

Greater Comfort

Another advantage of these travel trailers is that they have almost all the basic amenities with a few more luxuries thrown in. From a comfortable sleeping space to a built-in dinette, there's everything you need for daily living . So, you get to stay in your comfort zone even when you are away from home.

Fuel Saving

As these travel trailers have a moderate weight, they need lesser power to tow. This puts a lesser strain on your engine, and it does not have to consume any extra fuel. This lowers the need for fuel, cutting down on costs just as gas prices are going astronomical.

Updated January 9, 2024

Finding the best travel trailers on the market can be challenging, so we have compiled a list of the 10 best travel trailers under 4000 lbs after visiting RV Shows and dealerships nationwide. There are so many brands and manufacturers out there that finding the right travel trailer for you can be overwhelming.

This is especially true for someone who has no experience in the world of RVs. Narrowing the search by weight is extremely helpful. And, starting your search by looking at these seven options should be a big help to you.

Below, we will start by looking at ten different travel trailers under 4,000 pounds. Each has its pros and cons, and we will take you through each in detail.

As we look at each trailer, we will list important stats like the unloaded vehicle weight, MSRP, length, and sleep capacity. Each of these factors is incredibly important to the RV owner and can affect which trailer you end up purchasing.

When you are looking for a travel trailer, there are many things you need to consider. The price is obviously essential for most people.

However, there are other significant factors at play. For example, sleeping capacity is a big deal for families. If you have a large family, you will need a larger trailer with more sleeping space.

However, weight is the biggest factor to consider when purchasing a new or used travel trailer. There is no point in purchasing a new travel trailer only to discover that it exceeds the maximum towing capacity of your towing vehicle.

In fact, we recommend that you tow no more than 80% of the maximum towing capacity of your tow vehicle, just to be on the safe side.

Travel trailers under 4000 lbs may be small, but they are also versatile. Even the ones large enough to comfortably hold 4 people are easier to back into tight spots and, for obvious reasons, consume less power.

You’ll find some of the best floorplans on our list below, from the more extraneous models to more traditional RVs.

1. Lance 1575

Lance 1575 Exterior

Our Pros and Cons

✅ Exceptional storage options, inside and out, including a massive pass-thru

⛔ TV sticks out in front of the open door

  • UVW: 3,590 lbs
  • Length: 20′ 5”
  • GVWR: 4,600 lbs
  • CCC: 1,010 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 350 lbs

Of all the travel trailers under 4000 lbs on our list, the Lance 1575 is probably one of the simplest in design. That’s not a bad thing. It’s a prime example of simple is better, with more storage than you’ll find on most RVs this size.

A large individual can probably climb into the pass-thru storage, not that we’re suggesting such a thing. The point is, it’s that big. Everything on the Lance 1575 serves its purpose and is presented upfront.

For instance, the full gamut of outlets (traditional AC outlets, DC outlets, and USB), are all situated next to the bed, perfect for those who sleep with CPAP devices. If you need it, the odds are good that the Lance 1575 has it.

2. Casita Liberty

Casita Liberty Exterior

✅ Much higher degree of customizable options than traditional RVs

⛔ You have to choose between having a bathroom or sleeping four, with no in-betweens

  • UVW: 2,480 lbs
  • Length: 17′
  • GVWR: 3,750 lbs
  • CCC: 1,270 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 265 lbs
  • Sleep: 2 to 4

It wouldn’t be a proper article about travel trailers under 4000 lbs without a Casita. This is what we’re referring to as the “extraneous” option. Casitas are like Airstreams or Scamps.

They have a large, built-in, and devoted following. It’s mostly because of their unique and highly durable fiberglass bodies and high level of customizable features.

From the large picture windows to the unique, bubble aesthetic, Casita does things a little differently, though no less attractive than the best the industry has to offer.

The Casita Liberty , like all Casitas, comes in a Standard and Deluxe model. If you have a small family, the Standard sleeps 4, while the Deluxe sleeps two but comes with a bath and shower.

3. Grand Design 16BL

Grand Design 16BL Exterior - travel trailers under 4000 lbs

✅ The bar tabletop dinette is a unique twist on the traditional setup

⛔ Shower height barely accommodates 6′

  • UVW: 3,976 lbs
  • Length: 19′ 11″
  • GVWR: 5,495 lbs
  • CCC: 1,519 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 406 lbs

Grand Design has some of the best travel trailers on the market and the Imagine 16BL is one of those.

The high-quality interior materials give this small travel trailer the feel of a much more expensive RV.

A slide-out with a Murphy bed is a great use of space and opens up the floor space. A rear L-shaped kitchen is also a nice feature for a smaller camper. The front bunks allow for a full bath in the rear.

Outside a griddle makes outdoor cooking an option and an LP gas quick connect is there if you want to connect a full-size grill.

4. KZ RV Connect Mini

KZ RV Connect Mini Exterior

✅ Full, compact, exterior, slide-out kitchen

⛔ Could have used a fold-out table to increase the counter space

  • UVW: 3,850 lbs
  • Length: 22′ 1″
  • GVWR: 4,800 lbs
  • CCC: 950 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 450 lbs

The word “mini” is kind of a misnomer here. Sure, the word Mini is firmly stamped below the large front window, but the interior space defies the defining terminology.

The KZ Connect Mini offers a small slide-out for the Jack-knife sofa. However, it’s the perfect choice, shifting the living space’s primary, central furniture out of the center and really opening things up.

This makes enough room for everything else that RVers expect in a standard RV, including a full bathroom in the back. It’s not often that you have a sink in the bathroom on models in this class, but there is one here, along with a ton of storage space, pantries, wardrobes, and even a full bathtub.

5. Airstream Caravel 19CB

Airstream Caravel 19CB Exterior

✅ Airstream does a magnificent job of compacting so much into a tiny space, leaving room to breathe

⛔ All-electric fridge is a huge drain on the solar charging capabilities

  • UVW: 3,350 lbs
  • Length: 16′ 5″
  • GVWR: 4,300 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 500 lbs

The Airstream Cavarel is one of a handful of smaller Airstreams that have become popular with the brand. Airstream makes this four-sleeper work by compacting everything in a circular design, with one appliance running directly into the next.

This allows for two sizeable beds, a shower, a commode, a full kitchen, and even a tabletop (if not quite a full-fledged dinette arrangement).

Other than that, the iconic Airstream is on full display here, albeit small. They come with their own, unique look, both inside and out. It’s not for everyone, but if you like the Airstream aesthetic, the Caravel is an excellent option.

6. Coachmen Clipper 18BH

Coachmen Clipper 18BH Exterior

✅ A ton of space, including a full dry bath, even with the addition of the bunk beds

⛔ Lacking in the CCC department for an RV that hosts up to 6

  • UVW: 3,420 lbs
  • Length: 20′ 4″
  • GVWR: 4,125 lbs
  • CCC: 705 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 400 lbs

The Coachmen Clipper is a funny-looking thing, but the bunkbed version has a more traditional aesthetic, with abundant space. There’s a ton of storage available, though you’ll need to pack your lightweight gear, especially if you’re bringing the kiddos and pets along for the ride.

A camper of this size, capable of packing in 6, is the ultimate in affordable travel trailers under 4000 lbs. It is also a durable lightweight trailer, with a BAL NXG frame with a Dexter E-Z Lube axle, HUCK bolt assembly, and an AlphaPly TPO roof. The 7 cu. ft fridge is a nice touch in a small space as well.

7. Bigfoot 2500 B17

Bigfoot 2500 B17 Exterior

✅ Fiberglass exterior with a retro look compliments a cedar interior

⛔ Most of the storage compartments lack shelves, for some reason

  • UVW: 3,360 lbs
  • Length: 17′ 5″
  • CCC: 940 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 315 lbs

The Bigfoo t takes what works with the Casita, Oliver, Scamp, Happier, and Escapes, meshing it with a more traditional, old-school look.

The body is fiberglass and, instead of going with one of the many synthetic wood variations often seen in affordable RVs, Bigfoot chose cedar. It makes for an outstanding, rich aesthetic that also has a wonderful, natural scent.

This also drives away bugs (they hate cedar), so the look has some side benefits as well. Compared to other travel trailers under 4000 lbs, the Bigfoot is built like a beast, with high durability.

Everything has a place and every place has something to love. It’s not the most spacious model on the list, but it can be more than a couples trailer with one pet or child.

8. Little Guy Max

Little Guy Max Exterior

✅ Comes with a very fine, custom-made master bed entertainment center

⛔ Despite its vibe, it’s not the ideal camper for boondocking

  • UVW: 3,140 lbs
  • Length: 21′
  • GVWR: 4,200 lbs
  • CCC: 1,060 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 310 lbs

The Little Guy Max is a teardrop on steroids and another one of those unique classes of travel trailers under 4000 lbs that has its own, seemingly built-in, but highly dedicated following. There’s good reason to join those followers as this is definitely the little camper that could.

Though it does have a wet bath, it’s spacious enough to not be uncomfortable. There are also a ton of storage options and plenty of carrying capacity for an RV that maxes out at three sleepers.

They also feature 100% hardwood cabinetry, which is always a nice touch and aesthetic. That three-year structural warranty is very nice as well!

9. Keystone Bullet Crossfire 1900RD

Keystone Bullet Crossfire 1900RD Exterior - travel trailers under 4000 lbs

✅ A full tub/shower, and private dry bath on a sub-4000 is an example of fantastic room construction

⛔ Queen bed positioning requires some athletics for the inside sleeper to get out of bed

  • UVW: 3,760 lbs
  • Length: 21′ 11″
  • GVWR: 4,700 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 490 lbs

If you love boondocking and are heavy into tech stuff, you’ll love the Keystone Bullet Crossfire The15A MPPT SmartSolar controller, 200W solar panel, and inverter pre-wiring make off-grid camping a breeze.

You get all of that, plus the lightweight, easy-to-tow feature, at an affordable price. This RV definitely falls within that window. Despite a Queen bed and a sizeable dry bath is very spacious.

To expand on that vibe, the dinette sits next to a very large window, so you can enjoy the scenery as you eat breakfast and boondock somewhere well away from civilization.

10. Forest River Ozark 1620BHLE

Forest River Ozark 1620BHLE Exterior

✅ Twin bunks share a half-and-half with a dry bath on the back end of the RV

⛔ It could use a fold-up table for more counter space

  • UVW: 2,889 lbs
  • Length: 20′ 1″
  • GVWR: 3,850 lbs
  • CCC: 961 lbs

Most travel trailers under 4000 lbs have trouble packing in enough to support 6 sleepers. However, Forest River’s Ozark 1620BHLE accomplishes what only one other travel trailer on our list manages, and that’s bunks with a dry bath and enough room for 6 to sleep comfortably.

Even with all of that, there is still a comfortable amount of living space in the middle, though the fold-up table option should be standard on RVs that sacrifice counter space for more living space.

The comfortable interior layout provides ample storage solutions. Unfortunately, like the Coachmen Clipper 18BH, CCC becomes a liability when sleeping 6.

How Do You Decide What Size Travel Trailer You Need?

First and foremost, travel trailers under 4000 lbs typically lack variety, though versatility is always a plus. There’s only so much you can do at this weight class and even if it can sleep 6, there are notable sacrifices to achieve that. You should base your decision on several factors.

First, can you tow it? If you have a crossover or mid-size SUV, you need to carefully match the GVWR of your vehicle, with considerations toward carrying capacity added to the RV and the hitch weight.

Second, the size of your family and any pets. If extra space is your thing, and you have a large family, then it will be difficult to find what you want in the sub-4,000 category.

Third, the extent of use you plan on putting the RV through matters as well. For the most part, these RVs are for weekend getaways and short vacations. You can make them work long-term for couples or maybe three.

Understanding Travel Trailer Weight Terms

When you are looking through the plethora of travel trailers available to you, it can be overwhelming. Not only are there several options from many brands available to you, but it can also be difficult to know what to look for.

Additionally, you will come across numerous terms and abbreviations that you might not be familiar with. Here, we have compiled some of the most important terms for you to familiarize yourself with as you search for the best travel trailer for you.

UVW: Unloaded Vehicle Weight

UVW stands for unloaded vehicle weight and is one of the most significant things to remember. The unloaded vehicle weight refers to the weight of the trailer when it has nothing in it.

It’s a good idea to remember what this weight is because there are weight limits in certain areas. Knowing your unloaded vehicle weight allows you to calculate the weight of your trailer when it is fully loaded.

GVWR: Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

The gross vehicle weight rating is the maximum operating weight of the vehicle as specified by the manufacturer. This weight includes the chassis, body, engine, engine fluids, accessories, passengers, and cargo.

Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC)

The Cargo Carrying Capacity, or CCC for short, is the maximum weight of everything you add to the travel trailer. This includes everything that you add to the trailer, including all your belongings. It is essentially the gross vehicle weight rating minus the unloaded vehicle weight.

Gross Combined Weight Rating

The Gross Combined Weight Rating is the maximum allowed loaded weight of the vehicle with towables such as a motor home towing a car.

Gross Axle Weight Rating

The final term that you may come across that you might be unfamiliar with is Gross Axle Weight Rating or GAWR for short. It is the maximum distributed weight that may be supported by an axle of a road vehicle.

Typically, the rating will be followed by either the letters FR or RR. These letters indicate whether it is a front or rear axle.

Should I Buy an Extended Warranty for My Camper?

Wholesale Warranties How Much Does an RV Warranty Cost? Travel trailers under 4000 lbs

Yes – but not from a dealership! Unfortunately, your odds of suffering a major mechanical breakdown go up with every passing year. Based on RV Warranty claims records, more than 3 out of every 10 RVs will need major repairs in only their second year on the road.

This skyrockets to 8 out of 10 in their fifth year, and virtually ALL of them in their eighth year! Today’s RVs are increasingly more complex, and with more things to go wrong, the need to protect your investment is more important than ever.

We bought a warranty through Wholesale Warranties for several reasons:

  • We can cancel the warranty at any time and get a pro-rated refund
  • We can transfer the warranty to the new owner if we decide to sell our RV
  • There are no mileage caps on our policy
  • We can use repair shops all across the country
  • We can use a mobile repair company right at our campsite
  • The price is way better than most dealerships
  • We could finance the cost of the warranty
  • With parts and labor prices increasing all the time, we have peace of mind

You owe it to yourself to at least check out a warranty and get a free quote to see if it is right for you. It just takes a few minutes and you will learn a ton about protecting your investment. We only recommend products we use ourselves and we highly recommend you get a free quote from Wholesale Warranties .

I appreciate the fact that several of your picks had a sofa or a Murphy bed which allows for a comfortable place to sit on a cold, windy or rainy day! For so many decades, too many small trailer floor-plans were nothing more than a bed and a dinette?

Best Lightweight Travel Trailers Under 4000 Pounds: Our Top Picks

Published on March 26th, 2019 by Ray & Tammy Roman This post was updated on May 1st, 2023

Lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds are easy to tow by some sport utility vehicles and most all light trucks. You won’t need a heavy duty truck to take these travel trailers out on the road. We have researched most of the popular travel trailer manufacturers to see which of their models can meet the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)  of under 4,000 lbs. Here is what we found during our research. The ones listed below are our personal favorites but many of these travel trailers have creative floor plans that meet our criteria.

Our List Of Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 LBS

Coachmen viking (17bh).

When it comes to lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds, it’s hard to beat a Coachmen Viking. These travel trailers are affordable but do not compromise or quality and comfort. Most of the Viking Ultra-Lite models come in under our 4,000 lbs threshold. Towing a Coachmen Viking is a breeze with a typical full-size SUV or light truck. Outside speakers, aluminum rims, power awning, and outside shower are just some of the features.

This ultralight camper features a Norco NXG chassis, double-steps, electric brakes, four scissor-style jacks with pads, a heavy-duty tongue jack, and either single or dual 20 lbs liquid propane tank.

The exterior also has lots of great features such as a diamond plate on the front and rear wall for added protection. An aerodynamic front profile, tinted glass safety windows, power awning, a walk-on Alpha Superflex roof, bathroom skylight, back-up camera prep just to name a few.

Inside you’ll find residential grade linoleum, dark ash cabinets, laminated countertops, 4-inch high-density cushions, 12 volts LED interior lights, stone cast sink, a 2-burner stove, powered range vent, microwave, and lots more. There are some optional packages that add more features.

The 17SBH includes bunk beds and a 54 x 74-inch bed. It has a dry bath (separate tub and toilet) and a dinette and pantry.

17SBH Specifications:

  • GVWR – 3,716 lbs
  • UVW – 2,694 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 33 gallons
  • Gray Water: 25 gallons
  • Black Water: 25 gallons

The example above is just one of many that weight less than 4000. Check out their website for the latest information and specification.

Coachmen Clipper Cadet (14CR)

Like the Viking above the Coachmen Clipper is another lightweight travel trailer under 4000 lbs. Designed with fuel-efficient tow vehicles in mind the Clipper has floor plans that start at a GVWR of 3,634 lbs and go up from there, some heavier than 4,000 lbs. The floor plan selected here is the 14CR which has a GVWR of 3,803 lbs.

Being small and lightweight is not an indication that it is short on features. It too has many features like the Viking above just in a slightly smaller package. Since it has the same features as the Viking above I’m not going to repeat them, but suffice it to say both are very capable lightweights.

Clipper Cadet 14CR Specifications:

  • GVWR – 3,803 lbs
  • UVW – 2,335 lbs

Venture RV Sonic Lite

Venture RV is not a name I am personally familiar with, however, my research on lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds indicates they make a very well designed camper. Venture’s parent company is K.Z inc which happens to be a subsidiary of Thor Industries. K-Z got started with truck campers back in 1972 so there is lots of experience in this company.

On the construction side of things, the Sonic Lite has several features worth noting. For example, the roof is a one-piece seamless fiberglass roof. It extends from the profile to the rear bumper. The insulation R-value is 14 which makes for a very comfortable environment in most everyday scenarios. The roof rafters are made is aluminum and there is a diamond plate protecting the aerodynamic front profile.

Like the Coachmen above this camper also has an NXG frame . you get a standard manual awning but can upgrade to a powered awning with LED lights.

The sidewalls are 5-sided ivory infused fiberglass. Not sure what makes the ivory infused so special but apparently it’s important enough to Venture RV to mention it.

On the inside, you will find a host of features such as a spacious 60″ x 75″ bed that has USB chargers, as well as storage on the headboard. You also have overhead storage and the bed platform is on hinges allowing you to store more stuff underneath the bed.

The kitchen area features a dual-burner cook-top with a range hood. You also get a full-size convection oven which is pretty nice to have. There is also a pantry for even more food storage.

The bathroom is well laid out and has plenty of space and there is a skylight above the shower.

Added bonus features include backup camera prep, marine-grade detachable power cord, cable, TV and solar prep, and the LevelMate Pro system (optional). The LevelMate Pro calculates and displays the height required to achieve a perfectly level position. There is a lot more than you can view on their website.

Venture RV Sonic Lite Specifications:

The Venture Sonic Lite comes in 7-floor plans so you are bound to find one that meets your needs. It has many of the same features as its bigger brother the Sonic but in a more compact package. The GVWR ranges from 3,500 lbs to 4,000 lbs making this ultralight travel trailer super easy to tow.

  • GVWR – 3,500 – 4,000 lbs
  • UVW – 2,210 – 2,940 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 38 gallons
  • Gray Water: 30 gallons
  • Black Water: 30 gallons

Winnebago Minnie Drop (1710)

A unique design, excellent use of interior space make the Winnebago Minnie Drop one of our favorite lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds. You can read our review of the Minnie Drop right here.

With 4 floor plans that all have a GVWR of fewer than 4,000 lbs you are sure to find a layout that works for you and can be easily towed.

Like all Winnebago’s the Minnie Drop comes standard with lots of features. The exterior design has a nice collection of colors to please just about any RV enthusiast. The construction consists of an NGX engineered frame, aluminum floor structure, and plywood decking.

Night-shades, custom bedspread, carbon monoxide, and LP detector, as well as a 2-burner stove are included in their list of standard features.

Winnebago Minnie Drop Specification:

  • GVWR – 4,000 lbs
  • UVW – 2,760 – 3,160 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 31 gallons

Airstream Basecamp

Airstream’s entry weighing in at 3,500 lbs GVWR is the Basecamp. The Basecamp is small but it is very well-design like all the other Airstream travel trailers. It is not by any means inexpensive starting at $37,400 but it does, for some, warrant the price

A panoramic front window makes the Basecamp a cool looking travel trailer that is also extremely functional for its small size of 16-feet in length. In 2017 the Airstream Basecamp was voted RV of the year by RV Business Magazine.

There is only one-floor plan available but it is a well-laid out design that is both economical in space but very functional.

The exterior of the Basecamp is a riveted aluminum structure with a very aerodynamic shape. Tammy and I both love the panoramic window and the shape increases fuel efficiency. It also sports a rear hatch door which is usually not found on campers.

There is both an air-conditioning unit and a heating system available that are both optional. The interior decor comes in three options Red Rock, River rock, and Glacier Lake.

Two benches can easily be made into a bed, the rear hatch lets you load up your bike easily. In the kitchen, you have a two-burner stove, a sink with a tempered glass cover, a microwave, and a fridge as well. There are also two removable tables and bench storage.

A pop-up charging station in the kitchen area has two USB ports and a 110-volt outlet. On the exterior, you get a solar pre-wire kit and an outdoor shower. The outdoor shower is really a pass-through from the bathroom.

Airstream Basecamp Specifications:

  • GVWR – 3,500 lbs
  • UVW – 2,585 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 22 gallons
  • Gray Water and Black Water (Combo Tank): 29 gallons

Happier Camper

If you have never looked at a Happier Camper we suggest you do. When it comes to a unique design that is both lightweight and functional we don’t think you will find one better in this weight range. The Adaptiv modular cubes allow you to design the interior of the Happier Camper just about any way you want.

The retro styling and colors make the Happier Camper stand out from the crowd. Check out the Happier Camper here .

The Happier Camper is not your typical travel trailer. As a matter of fact, I’ve not seen any other camper designed like this one. It has a retro look with very modern features. The interior comes with what they refer to as an Adaptiv modular design.

It allows you to easily and quickly configure the interior pretty much on the fly. For example, the sleeping arrangement can be configured to up to five people. Storage and counter-top option can also be arranged any way you like with the modular component cubes. An added bonus of the cubes is that some of them can double outdoor furniture.

This modular configuration is achievable due to the honeycomb fiberglass modular floor design. IT lets you insert cubes into the floor just like Lego. Pretty cool engineering.

Some of the components available include, cooler icebox, kitchenette with sink, patio table, serving bar, toilet cube and many more.

Happier Camper Specifications:

  • UVW – 1,100 lbs
  • Fresh Water: N/A
  • Gray Water: N/A
  • Black Water: N/A

Can you tell we like Lance? Here we are again with another Lanlightweightght travel trailer. This time it’s the Lance 1475 . This is the smallest travel trailer in the Lance line-up.

Even at this small size, it has a separate shower and toilet which is something we always look for in a small travel trailer. We are not big fans of the wet bath (shower and toilet in one).

It is quickly becoming one of our favorite lightweight travel trailers under 4,000 pounds. Lance has added more flexibility to the floor plan with an optional sofa bed slide out feature. The construction of the Lance 1475 is aluminum-framed sidewalls, floor, and ceiling. The interior panel walls are made from Azdel , and block foam insulation.

The floor and ceiling are laminated and insulated and the roof is a one-piece crowned PVC roof. More standard features on the outside include aluminum wheel and Goodyear radial tires, double-entry step with LED step lighting, exterior wash station, LCD mount bracket, manual tongue, and manual stabilizer bars , skylight, and roof vent in the bedroom and living room area.

The interior is well-appointed too with Euro overhead cabinetry, forced air 14,300 BTU furnace, 5-cubic feet refrigerator, stainless steel 3-burner range with cover, and back-splash. The bedroom has a queen-sized bed and LED reading lights. Way to many features to list here so please visit the Lance website for more information.

Lance 1475 Specifications:

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 7 (154BH)

The Jayflight SLX 7 offers plenty of room in a small travel trailer. Due to its lightweight, it is very easy to tow. This model is the bunkhouse model that sleeps 3-4 people comfortably. Not one of my favorite models but it is lightweight and affordable. The floor plan is well laid out and does have a separate toilet and shower.

This camper offers a Magnum Truss Roof System, Goodyear Tires with galvanized steel, impact-resistant wheel wells. The construction of the Jay Flight seems to be better than most of its competitors in a similar price range. For example, Jayco offers custom-manufactured frames that offer higher strength and durability according to the company.

The Magnum Roof Truss System uses screws rather than staples, they use oversize nail plates, 2 x 2 vertical wood studs, 7″ header beams. According to Jayco, their roof system can withstand 4,500 pounds which are 50% heavier than their competition. The frame is a fully-integrated A-frame, on a 3-inch cambered, steel box tube frame.

There is quite a bit of standard equipment including but not limited to, maple cabinets, pantry storage, acrylic sink, 2-burner stove, 3-cubic feet refrigerator, microwave oven, fancy-looking brushed nickel faucets, and 8,000 BTU A/C wall-mounted, high-quality vinyl flooring, premium sound system and much more.

Jayco Jayflight 154BH Specification:

  • GVWR – 3,250 lbs
  • UVW – 2,580 lbs
  • Fresh Water: 10 gallons
  • Gray Water: 19.9 gallons

Livin’ Lite Camplite (CL11FK)

Livin’ Lite makes another lightweight travel trailer that made our list. This one has a GVWR of 3,500 lbs. This floor plan is nice and offers many of the creature comforts found in the other models.

Livin’ Lite is no longer in business. You can access the owner’s forum which is still active.

Like many Livin Lite campers, this one offers a collection of very nice features. Included as standard equipment is dual-pane Euro windows, 3 interior color choices, including an all-aluminum cabinet door option. You also get solid-surface counter-tops, audio-visual package, interior speakers that are flush-mounted, a charging center with USB ports, and high-efficiency LED lights.

Appliances include 6 cubic-feet double door fridge, 2-burner stove with glass cook-top cover, 6-gallon water heater, and a 12V Vortex high-power exhaust fan.

The bedroom offers a quilted comforter, 60 x 80 mattresses depending on the floor plan, overhead cabinets, and under-bed storage. There are several optional packages as well.

  • UVW – 2,430 lbs

K-Z RV Escape Mini

K-Z RV Escape Mini is another travel trailer with a GVWR of 3,500 lbs. The Escape Mini is affordable and lightweight but not light on style. One of the things I like about this ultralight travel trailer is its got a queen-size bed and a power awning. The Escape Mini comes in 4 different floor plans.

Additional standard features include storage above the bed which is always good to have. In the kitchen, you will find a two-burner stove, a convection microwave, seamless countertops, and a 4 cubic foot refrigerator.

In the bathroom, you have a full bath with a shower and a foot flush toilet, and a vanity with a sink. Additionally, you will find a skylight for ventilation and natural light, exterior cable prep, exterior speakers, and backup camera prep.

Commonly Used Acronyms and Definitions for Campers

The acronyms below are commonly used in the RV industry when referring to the weight of a particular camper.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating or GVWR?

Gross Vehicle Weight or (GVWR) as it is commonly abbreviated is, the maximum allowed the weight of the travel trailer and all of its content. It included the weight of the travel trailer, all fluids, cargo, optional equipment, and any accessories as well.

If you would like to calculate GVWR here is an easy to use trailer GVWR calculator.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)

The typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)

The amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment, and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the freshwater tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity.

Tip For Buying Lightweight Travel Trailers Under 4000 Pounds

When you are ready to buy or even just looking at lightweight travel trailers under 4000 pounds, there are a few things you can do to help you make a better purchase decision. Here are some tips.

  • Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) is the maximum weight of the vehicle and travel trailer combined.
  • Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) is the maximum weight the rear axle can support.
  • Talk to other owners of the model or models you might be interested in. Ask questions, ask to see the inside if possible. Ask them about their towing experience with the camper. Does it sway? Is it steady on the road?
  • At the dealership go inside the model, open cabinets, feel the materials, look for flaws, etc. Be very critical as this is not a cheap purchase.
  • Ask the dealership if you can talk to past customers, ask questions about service, warranty, etc.

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 Pounds (Light Towable Trailers)

used travel trailer under 4000 lbs

If you’re in the market for a new travel trailer and know just how much your vehicle can tow you want to be sure you choose the right trailer. These trailers all have a dry weight of less than 4000 lbs .

We put together this list because its quite common for future RV owners to look for a trailer under this weight. However before we get to the list of trailers lets go over what you should be looking for in a trailer that weighs less than 4000 pounds.

Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs

Not all cars can pull just any travel trailer, but if you have an SUV or a pickup, there are some fantastic models you can purchase for your next getaway. Are you going alone, with your partner or family?

The number of people a trailer sleeps is equally important given that you want to sleep in comfort if you’re to be able to get up to other activities during the day.

Kids are quite fond of trailers with bunk beds, so if you have little ones, be sure to look out for that. You will find that the bunk beds are often in a corner to give the children some privacy and a ‘cave’ feel.

How much storage space you need

Storage is another aspect to keep in mind when searching for the perfect home away from home for you and your family.

You don’t want to be limited in what you can bring with you to make your experience special. The duration of the trip matters- how much food, clothing, utensils and other gear will be required for the journey?

The modern-day trailer maximize on space by having overhead cabinets and drawers in the kitchen area. A good design has storage space under the bed, by a door or under the dinette- companies have found some creative ways to make the most out of the space.

Master bedroom

Though the trailer is an open plant, the size of bed can make the difference between feeling at home of feeling as though you’re camping. A queen size bed (or king size, though those are rare) for a good night’s sleep in comfort helps you feel rejuvenated after a long drive or a day outdoors exploring.

Most designs have LED lighting above the bed screwed into overhead cabinets to let you do some light reading before dozing off. Some trailers come with a closet and a bedside table on each side for added luxury.

The kitchen and dining area

Standard travel trailers come with a refrigerator, a cooktop with a kitchen hood, a microwave oven and dinette that converts into a sleeping area. Standard trailers come with a two-burner cooktop.

There are some great layouts that factor in a sink cover to give you full use of a counter top when making preparations for a meal. Though not quite common, a freezer is a great addition to have if you’re taking frozen foods or even ice cream with you.

These spaces are often quite small, but considering the time you spend in them, they are a fair compromise. A standard trailer will feature a foot-flush toilet and a shower.

Larger trailers will have a mirrored medicine cabinet and a sink with storage space underneath.

If your in the market for something smaller but still want the basic necessities such as a bathroom I would recommend reading this post here.

Water storage capacity

Don’t want to worry about water and waste during the trip? See what works for you, keeping in mind that a person can use up to 1.5 gallons for a 12-minute shower from a low flow shower-head. All trailers on this list, with two ore three exceptions, have a three water talks; a fresh, black and grey water talk. The grey tank contains the water that get used in the trailer- whether cooking, washing dishes or showering, while the black tank only holds what gets flushed down the toilet.

The trailer has a frame that’s one and a half inches of box double welded aluminum that combats road vibrations. This outer shell also makes it sturdy to withstand potential pumps.

The galvanized steel roof will not leave you concerned about mildew or mold that is typical of wood or aluminum roofing. The double welded aluminum joists used for the entire flooring make for a stable floor that retains that solid feel after years of use.

To maintain an overall lightweight to structure as the whole, aluminum is used to frame the front and rear cap, the slide boxes, and the outside storage. The Safari Condo Alto F2114 is lightweight and can be easily towed by small SUVs. The frame and floor are made of aluminum.

The Alto is also a green travel trailer- most parts of it are recyclable, and the lightness of weight means that the car uses less gas to tow it around. The furniture mainly consists of aluminum as well as composite materials.

This series provides trailers with a more spacious interior and more storage space than the previous F17 series by Safari Condo. It, however, maintains the large windows and the durable material the brand used for their travel trailers.

The impressive feature that those who mainly love comfort when it comes to having a good night’s sleep are the king and queen size beds that you find in the travel trailer.

The water and propane tanks are also more enormous, as is the fridge.

10 Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR

Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR Cover

Sharing is caring!

Lightweight travel trailers under 4000 lbs have many advantages. Typically smaller and more compact, these RVs are easy to tow and park. But there is a tradeoff. Less square footage also means manufacturers are forced to pick and choose which amenities to include and which to skip. Thankfully, innovative floorplans and advancements in manufacturing are revolutionizing the lightweight camper industry.

There are more lightweight camper options on the market now than ever before. We’ve listed our favorite travel trailers under 4000 lbs to help you choose which is best for you.

What’s the Difference Between Dry Weight and GVWR?

What’s the Difference Between Dry Weight and GVWR

When talking about camper weight, it’s important to distinguish between dry weight and GVWR, or gross vehicle weight rating. Dry weight refers to how much the camper weighs when it rolls off the production line. This measurement doesn’t consider any fluids or other cargo on board.

Alternately, GVWR refers to the maximum total safe weight of the camper as advised by the manufacturer. Always reference GVWR when looking at your vehicle’s towing capacity and your camper’s carrying capacity.

Dry weight can be a noteworthy statistic. But GVWR refers to the total amount the camper weighs as it rolls down the road and is, therefore, the more important measurement. That’s why we only included travel trailers under 4000 lbs GVWR is on our list of the best lightweight campers.

The Importance of Towing Beneath Your Vehicle’s Tow Capacity

Importance of Towing Beneath Your Vehicle’s Tow Capacity

If you exceed your vehicle’s towing capacity, the results can be disastrous. An overloaded towing setup can cause the travel trailer to sway. This, in turn, can cause you to crash. If you get into an accident, insurance companies often refuse to pay once they learn you’ve exceeded your vehicle’s towing capacity.

Even if you avoid an accident, towing beyond your limits can damage the vehicle. Overloading your tow vehicle can strain the engine and transmission and cause your brakes and tires to wear faster.

A good rule of thumb is to choose a camper with GVWR at 90% or below your vehicle’s towing capacity for extra safety. For travel trailers under 4000 lbs GVWR, you’ll want to choose a vehicle with a tow rating of at least 4,444 lbs.

3. Venture Sonic Lite 150VRB

Venture Sonic Lite 150VRB Exterior

✅ By incorporating a Murphy bed, the Venture Sonic Lite 150VRB makes room for one of the largest wardrobes and bathrooms in any travel trailer under 4000 lbs.

⛔ The Sonic Lite 150VRB lacks the kitchen cabinet and countertop space that other small travel trailers offer.

  • UVW: 3,180 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 480 lbs.
  • Length: 19.11 ft.
  • GVWR: 3,885 lbs.
  • CCC: 705 lbs.

Full-time camping couples will love some of the higher-end features that come standard in the Venture Sonic Lite 150VRB . The rear bathroom is one of the largest you’ll find in a travel trailer under 4000 lbs. The corner shower with skylight offers plenty of headroom. Likewise, the porcelain toilet and large vanity will remind you of home. The bathroom also boasts tons of storage; in addition to the vanity, there is a huge closet.

Speaking of clothing storage, you’ll also find a wardrobe on either side of the Murphy bed. One of our favorite features of this Murphy-bed area is another type of dual storage. On either side of the mattress is a hidden cubby for charging your phone or keeping a bedside glass of water.

When the Murphy bed is not in bed mode, it easily converts to a sofa. Use the included table to create a pseudo-dinette. Or you can take the table outside for tailgate or campfire dining. Whether you choose a short weekend trip or a longer adventure, the Sonic Lite 150 VRB will have you feeling right at home.

4. inTech Sol Dawn

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR InTech Sol Dawn Exterior

✅ Despite the compact floorplan, the inTech Sol Dawn boasts a tremendous amount of storage space and one of the best wet baths on the market.

⛔ As a reimagined teardrop camper, this travel trailer lacks headroom and can be uncomfortable for taller RVers.

  • UVW: 2,650 or 2,731 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 280 or 310 lbs.
  • Length: 16 ft.
  • CCC: 805 or 910 lbs.

The Sol Dawn is InTech’s unique take on a teardrop camper. Its unique design boasts more headroom and more natural light than traditional teardrops. This is partly because of the classic InTech front panoramic window that spans the front of the camper.

Surrounded by this window is the multi-configurable U-shaped dinette. You can use this space to dine or as two twin beds. Simply pivot the table, and you can create a space that’s a half bed and half dinette. A final option is to drop the table down and create one large oversized bed. Regardless of your configuration, you’ll have easy access to the many overhead front storage cabinets.

Beyond the versatility of the front seating/sleeping area, the Sol Dawn boasts one of the best wet baths on the market. The door is double-sealed to prevent any water leakage. The toilet is porcelain, and the lighting is plentiful. A skylight gives you more headroom, and the adjustable height shower head makes bathing a comfortable experience for travelers of any size.

Although geared towards couples, the InTech Sol Dawn is a versatile little camper that can also work well for friends or young families. If you decide to get the off-road version, the upgraded features add a bit more weight, but you’ll find it’s worth it as you head into the backcountry.

5. Xtreme Outdoors Little Guy Mini Max

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR Xtreme Outdoors Little Guy Mini Max Exterior

✅ Little Guy Mini Max is a traditional teardrop camper with an interior kitchen and open floor plan.

⛔ Storage space is in short supply in this teardrop camper.

  • UVW: 2,320 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 240 lbs.
  • Length: 17.2 ft.
  • CCC: 1,180 lbs.

From the outside, this travel trailer under 4000 lbs resembles other traditional teardrops. But unlike other teardrop campers, the Xtreme Outdoors Little Guy Mini Max’s kitchen is located inside rather than in an outdoor back hatch.

You might worry that the Mini Max would feel less spacious by moving the kitchen inside than some of its counterparts. Surprisingly, Min Max creates an open floorplan by tucking the kitchen and bathroom under the camper’s curved front wall.

The main bed that converts into a dinette by day is another feature that opens up the Mini Max floor plan. Couples who love the look and aerodynamic benefits of a teardrop, but the openness of a traditional travel trailer, will love the Little Guy Mini Max.

6. Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16BHX

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16BHX Floorplan

✅ The Puma Ultra Lite 16BHX boasts sleeping space for five, making it a great lightweight camper for big families.

⛔ Despite its nearly 22-foot length, the Ultra Lite 16BHX has a smaller-than-average dinette that may be a tight fit for a large family.

  • UVW: 3,144 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 370 lbs.
  • Length: 21.6 ft.
  • GVWR: 3,870 lbs.
  • CCC: 726 lbs.

At nearly 22 feet in length, the Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16BHX is one of the longest on our list of the best travel trailers under 4000 lbs. Palomino expertly uses that space to create a floor plan perfect for families. With bunk beds, a dinette bed, and a front queen bed, this RV easily accommodates a family of five.

In addition to the ample sleeping room, young families will also appreciate the tub shower in the bathroom. Unlike many other compact campers that only offer a wet bath, the Puma Ultra Lite has a tub/shower combo large enough to give little ones a bath.

The RV is great for families because of the sleeping and bathroom arrangement. But, you’ll find the tradeoff is that the Puma Ultra Lite offers only a limited amount of kitchen storage and a smaller-than-typical dinette. Still, this camper under 4000 lbs could be a perfect choice for families that prefer outdoor picnic table meals.

7. Jayco Jay Flight SLX 154BH

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 154BH Exterior

✅ This versatile travel trailer with bunk beds and a large dinette is great for families.

⛔ This Jay Flight has no dedicated owner’s bedroom space. Instead, it boasts an oversized dinette that transforms into a bed at night.

  • UVW: 2,810 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 250 lbs.
  • Length: 18 ft.
  • GVWR: 3,600 lbs.
  • CCC: 790 lbs.

The Jayco Jay Flight SLX 154BH is another great family travel trailer under 4000 lbs. Measuring nearly four feet shorter, this Jay flight offers many of the same features of the Palomino in an even smaller footprint.

You’ll find sturdy, plywood-constructed bunk beds that each accommodate up to 300 pounds. Unlike the bunks in other small campers, these are 80% enclosed. This is a great setup for younger children because it safeguards against rolling and provides a less distracting sleep environment.

Like the Palomino, this Jay Flight also has a convenient tub/shower combo. One difference you’ll notice between the Palomino and the Jay Flight is the latter has a much larger and deeper dinette. Parents will have to transform the dinette into a bed each night. But for families that don’t mind this extra step and appreciate a table that can seat the whole crew, the Jay Flight SLX 154BH is a great choice.

8.  Braxton Creek Bushwhacker Plus 17BH

Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs GVWR Braxton Creek Bushwhacker Plus 17BH Exterior

✅ The Bushwhacker Plus 17BH is one of the only teardrop campers to sleep four and offer bunk beds.

⛔ Although this travel trailer is large by teardrop standards, it isn’t quite large enough to incorporate a dry bath. Instead, you’ll find a shower/toilet combo situated right in the middle of your living space.

  • UVW: 2,360 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 320 lbs.
  • GVWR: 3,320 lbs.
  • CCC: 760 lbs.

The Bushwhacker Plus 17BH is an exceptional travel trailer under 4000 lbs. It’s rare to find a teardrop camper that sleeps more than two, but this Bushwhacker Plus does just that.

All of the sleeping spaces in this travel trailer are tucked under the lowest curved parts of the ceiling. This allows you to enjoy the aerodynamic and fuel-efficient benefits of the teardrop shape without sacrificing headroom in the main living space.

The bunks span the width of the front of the camper, while the main bed/dinette spans the back. While in dinette mode, the table pivots so you can easily fit the whole family. The dinette’s proximity to the entertainment hookups also means everyone can relax and watch a movie together. Teardrop campers are not often considered family RVs, but the Bushwhacker Plus 17BH is the exception.

9. Forest River No Boundaries (NOBO) 10.6

Forest River No Boundaries NOBO 10.6 Exterior

✅ This compact toy hauler can go anywhere and boasts both a low GVWR and a large CCC.

⛔ This no-frills toy hauler lacks both a bathroom and an indoor kitchen space.

  • UVW: 2,255 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 288 lbs.
  • Length: 13.10 ft.
  • GVWR: 3,788 lbs.
  • CCC: 1,533 lbs.

Like all No Boundaries campers by Forest River, the NOBO 10.6 is designed to go anywhere. Offroad tires, an enclosed underbelly, and a torsion flex axle with independent suspension allow this small camper to be towed just about anywhere. Once off the beaten path, boondockers will appreciate the space for two deep cycle batteries and the included solar prep.

Designed to get you out and enjoying the great outdoors, this travel trailer under 4000 lbs has an exclusively outdoor kitchen. Interior space is reserved for a basic sofa that transforms into a bed. The simplicity of the interior floorplan means you can easily stack or remove the cushions to make room for a dirt bike or four-wheeler.

When you aren’t offroading, you’ll love the ample outdoor living space offered in the NOBO 10.6. You can choose to sleep beneath the stars in the optional rooftop tent. You can also add a batwing canopy that wraps around half the trailer and triples the outdoor entertainment space. True adventures and nature enthusiasts will appreciate all the NOBO 10.6 offers.

10. KZ RV Escape E17 Hatch

KZ RV Escape E17 Hatch Exterior

✅ The KZ RV Escape E17 hatch is a versatile trailer with room for four.

⛔ This narrow trailer offers a smaller than typical garage space as compared to other toy haulers of this length.

  • UVW: 3,320 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 550 lbs.
  • Length: 22 ft.
  • GVWR: 4,000 lbs.
  • CCC: 680 lbs.

The KZ RV Escape E17 Hatch is an unconventional and very versatile toy hauler trailer under 4000 lbs. Like other toy haulers, the back area of this camper converts from a garage to a living space. However, the hatch feature is unique compared with a typical toy hauler’s ramp.

Although this hatch provides a nice secondary awning for outdoor living, the lack of a ramp makes loading heavier vehicles difficult. Since the carrying capacity and garage space are both small, it’s best to stick to hauling toys like bikes and kayaks in this small travel trailer. Still, the convenient back hatch makes loading and unloading these toys and other camping essentials much easier.

What the Escape E17 lacks in garage space makes up for in interior amenities. The modern farmhouse decor gives the camper an upscale feel. The huge wardrobe, full-length pantry, and large refrigerator are all features not typically found in other toy haulers at this price point.

In many ways, this small travel trailer under 4000 lbs GVWR is the best of both the toy hauler and traditional travel trailer worlds.

Why Would You Want a Lightweight Trailer?

Why Would You Want a Lightweight Trailer

Lightweight trailers are easily towable behind mid-sized SUVs and small trucks. They are also more fuel-efficient and budget-friendly. Lightweight travel trailers are also usually on the smaller side. This makes them easier to park and store than their larger, heavier counterparts.

As much as a compact floorplan can be an advantage of a lightweight trailer, it can also be a disadvantage. A smaller footprint means that lightweight trailers cannot offer all of the features and amenities that larger campers boast.

What Kind of Vehicle Can Tow a 4000 lbs Travel Trailer?

What Kind of Vehicle Can Tow a 4000 lb Travel Trailer

One of the great things about lightweight travel trailers under 4000 lbs GVWR is that a wide variety of vehicles can tow them.

Mid-sized SUVs with tow ratings of just 5,000 lbs. will pull the campers on our list just fine. Quarter-ton pickup trucks are also great tow vehicles for small travel trailers.

Whether you prefer the extra seating of an SUV, the extra cargo space of a pickup, or you simply want to use a vehicle you already own; you’ll appreciate the flexibility in a vehicle that a lighter travel trailer affords you.

Can You Travel Comfortably in a Lightweight Camper?

Can You Travel Comfortably in a Lightweight Camper

They sometimes say “less is more,” and we think that can definitely be the case with small travel trailers. Although they may not boast the storage capacity of other rigs, you can certainly fit all of your essentials in any one of these small campers.

What more do you need really? After all, most RVers are drawn to the lifestyle, at least in part by a desire to lead a more simplified and less stressful life. We think these compact campers encourage a back-to-the-basics camping approach that so many of us desire.

Can You Put a Bathroom in a 4000 lbs Travel Trailer?

You might be surprised to realize that almost all of the travel trailers under 4000 lbs that we’ve reviewed incorporate a bathroom. It’s true that smaller floorplans typically lend themselves to wet baths. However, finding a dry bath in even these small campers is not all that unusual.

Even if you fall in love with one of the few options on our list that are bathroom free , never fear. You can always opt to bring along a portable or composting toilet.

10 Things to Know About Owning a Small Travel Trailer

Things to Know About Owning a Small Travel Trailer

1. They’re Much Easier to Tow

Small travel trailers are easy to tow compared to other types of campers. Lightweight campers are less likely to bully a tow vehicle and push it all over the road. They are also easier to tow because a wider array of vehicles can pull them. You won’t need a huge pickup to tow a travel trailer under 4000 lbs GVWR, since many SUVs can tow this size camper.

The shorter length of small travel trailers also makes them easier to tow. You will not have to take turns as wide or find parking spaces as long as you would with a larger camper. Small travel trailers are great for those who may not have towed before.

2. Modern Layouts Make Small Campers Feel Spacious

A camper under 4000 lbs GVWR today looks very different from what a camper of the same weight would have looked like a few decades ago. Modern layouts and innovations in dual-purpose furniture and other spaces within the RV make even the smallest floorplan feel spacious.

Advancements in manufacturing and the incorporation of lighter-weight materials in the construction of today’s campers also mean that lightweight campers aren’t as small or as bare bones as they once were.

3. Storage Can Be Challenging

One thing that is hard to overcome in small travel trailers is a lack of storage. A compact floorplan inherently means less space. Moreover, dual-purpose furniture and spaces are even more prevalent in small travel trailers than in their larger counterparts.

These dual-purpose features are great because they allow RVers more luxuries in a smaller space. The disadvantage is that they tend to encroach on space that would otherwise be allocated to storage.

4. Many Small Campers Have Bathrooms AND Kitchens

used travel trailer under 4000 lbs

Many small travel trailers today use modern innovation to incorporate both a bathroom and kitchen into their floorplan. Depending on the square footage, the kitchen might be in the form of an outside galley, or the bathroom might be a wet bath. Nevertheless, these small campers are more than just beds on wheels.

5. But Holding Tanks Will Be Small

Incorporating bathrooms and kitchens into compact campers come with the need for holding tanks. Water is very heavy. In fact, just ten gallons of water weigh over 80 lbs. Therefore, although you’ll find freshwater, gray water, and black water tanks on board lightweight campers, these tanks are typically small to keep GVWR low.

6. You Can Fit in Any Campground

You won’t have to worry too much about the capacity of your tanks if you plan to camp in modern campgrounds with full hookups. The good news is that these small campers fit in any campground and on almost any campsite. This means finding availability is much easier for compact campers than for larger rigs.

7. Boondocking Is Challenging but Not Impossible

Although you can camp just about anywhere with a tiny travel trailer, the smaller tank capacities do make boondock-style camping more of a challenge.

If you choose to take your under 4000 lbs GVWR travel trailer off the grid, you may want to invest in a water purification system. Boondocking can also be made easier in a small-tanked travel trailer by swapping out the traditional toilet for a composting toilet.

8. They’re More Affordable to Maintain

They're More Affordable to Maintain

Smaller campers are easier and more affordable to maintain than larger models. Lightweight campers have fewer or no slide-outs. Less moving parts means there are fewer things to break or wear out over time. Souped-up luxury travel trailers also commonly have more plumbing and more electrical to worry about than their smaller counterparts.

9. You Don’t Need a Heavy-Duty Truck

Compact travel trailers under 4000 lbs are also more affordable because they don’t require you to purchase a heavy-duty truck to pull them. Their low GVWR means that many SUVs can tow them with ease.

10. They’re Great for Beginning RVers

Small, lightweight travel trailers are great for beginning RVers. They are easier to tow and park than larger RVs and can often be towed behind a vehicle you own. Their compact size and fewer bells and whistles make them easier for a novice to maintain.

Moreover, their small size also comes with a typically smaller price tag, making them great when testing the waters on an RV lifestyle.

Travel trailers under 4000 lbs are great options. Whether you’re a first-time RVer or an occasional camper, these lightweight rigs offer many of the benefits of larger trailers without nearly the investment.

You can often save money with a travel trailer under 4000 lbs by towing your lightweight travel trailer with a vehicle you own. Not only will you save on tow vehicle costs, but also fuel, maintenance, and storage costs are lower with a compact travel trailer.

By nature, these small campers can’t include all the luxuries in their larger counterparts. Full-time RVers or even dedicated weekend warriors might desire more amenities than a small travel trailer offers. Still, for many, a travel trailer under 4000 lbs will meet their needs and be well worth the investment.

Why under 4000 lbs?

Well, travel trailers come in all different sizes, shapes and weights but most SUVs and pickups will be able to haul a travel trailer that is under 4000 lbs with ease. So trailers that are under 4000 lbs, are the perfect size to transport without needing a particularly large vehicle.

This is a great family-friendly bunkhouse RV, light enough to be towed by most vehicles. Find local, new and used listings from private RV owners and dealers here.

Advantages of having a travel trailer

Lower cost than a bigger motorhome.

One of the biggest advantages of having a travel trailer is that it’ll cost less than a full-size RV.

Class A Motorhomes are absolutely fantastic things to have however they’re mightily expensive and even smaller RVs like a Class C can still be pretty pricey. A travel trailer won’t cost as much although you’ll obviously not have the same kind of living space or facilities however for a couple of nights away they are ideal for many people.

You can unhitch it at the campsite

Unlike other RVs that are one complete vehicle, you can detach a travel trailer at the campsite and go off in your SUV or pick up truck and explore the local area.

This is great because it means if you do want to go offer and see some sights near where you are staying, you don’t need to tow the trailer with you. It also doesn’t take up as much room as the bigger motorhomes.

Some RVs and motorhomes can be hard to maneuver so being able to unhitch a travel trailer and drive in your vehicle like normal is a big bonus.

rv

Insurance is usually lower

As travel trailers are smaller and don’t have as many expensive features like the bigger motorhomes on the market, your insurance costs shouldn’t be as high.

You can choose to insure a motorhome the same way you would any kind of vehicle although many liability insurance plans can be extended to your travel trailer and there is no legal requirement to purchase additional insurance (it is a good idea to check where you live to ensure this is accurate).

What to look for in a travel trailer

Before you get into our list of the best travel trailers that you can buy that weigh under 4000 lbs, there are some things to look out for first.

Instead of just purchasing the first trailer you see, think about these points before you buy.

Compared to other motorhomes, a travel trailer is at the smaller end of the scale.

That being said, you still need to consider the size of the trailer related to your needs and look for more storage space. Some will be bigger than others and offer a bit more extra sleeping space so you can sleep comfortably. Much of this will depend on how many people are going to be sleeping in and using the trailer.

Always look at the floor plans and decide on what you’re going to be bringing with you as well because even though they aren’t the biggest motorhome, you don’t want it to be too cramped.

Drainage system

RV plumbing and drainage is an important thing to consider and is often overlooked.

Travel trailers often have different setups depending on their size. Larger travel trailers may have a toilet system more akin to an RV however the smaller models might have a porta potti design.

This is something you should have a look at before you make a purchase to ensure the toilet and drainage system is right for your needs.

Other features

Although travel trailers are at the smaller end of the scale when it comes to motorhomes, you would be surprised what it can actually hold in terms of space and different features.

For example, you’ll want some kind of cooking facilities and most travel trailers have a microwave (or at least the space for a microwave) alongside a stove. Also, consider whether or not you need a dinette. The more things you want in a travel trailer then the likelihood is you’ll get more space that will increase so this will add to the overall weight.

Can it go off-road?

Finally, think about whether you want a sturdy travel trailer that is able to go off the beaten track.

If you are just planning on visiting well-connected campsites and routes then you don’t really need to worry. However, if you are planning on going off-road to some far flung parts of the country, you’ll need a travel trailer that can withstand this.

Not every trailer will have the durability for this kind of activity so make sure you take this into consideration before you purchase.

Best Travel Trailers under 4000 lbs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my vehicle tow a travel trailer under 4000 lbs.

Most SUVs and pickup trucks should be able to tow a trailer under 4000 lbs with relative ease. You should always check your vehicle specification to ensure that it is able to do this before you purchase a trailer.

Can you ride in a travel trailer whilst being towed?

It isn’t recommended although in certain states it is legal. In many states, it is against the law so you should check the information specific to your state.

Does my travel trailer need to be insured?

Your vehicle liability insurance should cover a travel trailer so check this out first. You can get motorhome specific insurance policies however they might not be needed depending on where you live.

How many people can travel trailers sleep?

It really depends on the model of the trailer that you purchase. Some are quite compact and are only ideal for two or three people however bigger trailers can sleep five people relatively comfortably.

Can I take my travel trailer ‘off-road’?

Possibly. Some travel trailers aren’t really designed for going off the beaten track however certain models will have more durability and are constructed to withstand roads that are less traveled.

Which is the best travel trailer under 4000 lbs

Now we get to the answer you’ve been looking for – which is the best travel trailer that is under 4000 lbs.

All the travel trailers that we’ve listed here are pretty special and worth consideration. If i had to really choose between the seven travel trailers on this list I would go with the Coachmen Viking 17BH . Not only does it come with pretty much everything you could want in a travel trailer but it has the Coachmen brand name so you know it is going to be well constructed.

The fact it crams a lot into such a small space and still allows sleeping capacity for up to 5 people is really good.

I do need to give a shout out to the Airstream Basecamp for its unique design and also the Winnebago Minnie Drop because, well, it’s a Winnebago! But overall if you are in the market for a travel trailer either as a couple or as a family and want to get the most from your money to enjoy the open road, campsites and all the adventures this brings, go with the Coachmen Viking 17BH.

The Andersen Hitches Review That You’ll Love

The Andersen Hitches Review That You’ll Love

One of the key questions I had to answer when deciding to travel full-time was, “What type of RV am I going to buy?” This is important for several reasons because it dictates your choice of vehicle. If you get a motorhome, you can tow it and get a small sedan or SUV.

If you go with a travel trailer, you can probably get by with a smaller truck like a Ford F150. But if you choose a fifth wheel, you have to have something capable of pulling it. Not only that, but you have to have a hitch that can handle the payload.

Most people choose to go with a standard fifth wheel hitch. This involves backing up the vehicle until the fifth wheel’s tongue snaps into place inside the receiver. But Andersen Hitch has changed the way people think about pulling the fifth wheel.

Is an Andersen hitch right for everyone? Probably not. But this innovative company has created a hitch that redefines the way RV travelers pull their campers. Keep reading t

8 Small Travel Trailers Under 4000 lbs – Pros And Cons From REAL Owners!

By Kelly Beasley

You've read those articles 'teaching' you about small travel trailers.

The ones where many different little campers are randomly mentioned with 'pros and cons' listed for them without any real experience behind them from the author.

That is a flawed concept. How could you possibly learn the REAL pros and cons of these small camping trailers from that?

I wanted you to hear from REAL PEOPLE who owned small campers.

Therefore, I reached out to my friends that DO have one!

They happily coughed up the advantages and downsides of their small pull-behind trailer. These are REAL OWNERS' opinions on having smaller floorplans, cooking areas, workspace, bathrooms, and more in their compact campers.

Choices for floorplans and amenities can seem limitless in pretty much any small bumper pull camper. But what is it like to have such a small floor plan and area?

Keep reading below, and you'll find out.

(NOTE: All photos in this article were provided by the camper owner unless otherwise noted.)

Little Guy Off-Road Max

Owner: Janine Pettit

Janine is the founder of  GirlCamper.com  and uses her trailer recreationally, and LOVES camping. I love her spirit and enthusiasm when it comes to supporting women who camp!

We finally met in January of 2020. Here's what she does/doesn't like about her Max- she's got one of the best decorated  small teardrop camper  interiors out there!

Note: It's the heaviest/longest trailer on this list.

Website: Go Little Guy

Dry Weight: 3450 pounds

Length: 21 feet

Towed With:  Ford F-150

# People Using:  1

FT/Recreational:  Recreational

# Years Owned:  2

Bought New Or Used?  New

What Are Your Three Favorite Things About This Teardrop Trailer?

  • Interior storage.
  • Build quality.
  • HUGE windows.

Three Least Favorite About Your Tiny Camping Experience?

  • I don't love the awning.
  • Exterior storage doors are too small.
  • Everywhere you go, people want to ask you about it and get a tour of the bells and whistles.

Did The Small Living Space Benefit You? If So, How?

I think it is the perfect size for a solo traveler using it recreationally. I am generally not on the road for longer than six weeks so this small camper is fine for me. If I traveled for months at a time I would probably want a small toy hauler trailer .

  • People want to ask you about it and get a tour of the bells and whistles everywhere you go.

I think it is the perfect size for a solo traveler using it recreationally. I am generally not on the road for longer than six weeks, so this small camper is fine for me. If I traveled for months at a time, I would probably want a small  toy hauler trailer .

Was Interior Storage Ample Or Problematic?

This was the big solution to storage RV. MY past two RVs had such little storage that I was always going without things I wanted or tripping over the things I wanted but didn't have a designated storage place. The Max has an astounding 57 square feet of interior storage, which is enormous for a 3,500-pound RV.

How Would You Rate The Quality Of The Materials In The Trailer 1-10?

I say nine because of a few key build ingredients.

1) The European windows with built-in shades and screens. I love this feature, and they are the highest quality window manufacturers make, and they are a game-changer. I would never choose a small travel camper model again without these windows.

2) The cabinetry in my Max is custom-made and solid wood with dovetailed joints. They build their cabinets on site.

3) The exterior is Azdel and cleans up beautifully. The framing is welded aluminum. I gave it a nine instead of a ten because the exterior storage doors are chintzy and always hard to open and close and because the  trailer sewer hose  opening is not big enough for a hose with the end caps attached to it.

What Would You Change About This Small Camper Trailer If You Could?

I would change the locking components on the cabinetry. The durability of the existing ones is a constant FAIL and is constantly being repaired or replaced. I wish the pantry had factory-built slide-out trays.

That's a DIY I don't want to tackle. The cabinets are so deep you can't get to the stuff in the back. That convenience is lacking. Two televisions are overkill. I took my bed one out and put a fireplace in its place, giving it more of a cabin feel.

Was It Worth The Money?

Yes. Every penny.

What Would You Advise Someone Looking To Buy This Small Camper Trailer?

Do it! It's the best in show for its category and has so much interior storage space. It is the third camper I have owned (new, that is. I've owned several vintage rigs), and it is my favorite by far.

Would You Buy This Model Again?

In a heartbeat. In fact, it is my second one, and I upgraded from the original to an off-road model.

I think it is a great RV for what I use it for - short recreational solo travel and the occasional couple trip. The interior space is so bright because of the huge windows, and there is plenty of storage space.

Because of all the storage, the RV always feels clean because there is a place to put everything. I do not like how loud the air conditioner system is, and I rarely use it in high temperatures because of how loud it is.

The wet bath is a good trade-off for me. I don't mind not having a three-piece bath because I love the smaller length and lighter weight that I pick up because of that.

Although it is a wet bath, there is still plenty of room to turn around and use it without bumping your elbows. I am not a fan of this small camper trailer's glass door equipment on the wet bath.

Scamp Trailer

Owner: Rick Oberreuter

Rick is a full-time RVing friend who recently got his 1982 Scamp after having a  C class RV  for a good while.

He travels with his dog, Mazzie, and is pretty much a fulltime boondocker. He loves his new-to-him  Scamp camper trailer . Ask Rick about awnings. 🙂

Website: Scamp Trailers

Dry Weight:  1200-1500 pounds

Length: 13 feet

Towed With: 2002 Jeep Liberty 4x4

Number Using: 1

FT/Recreational: Full-time

# Years Owned: 7 months

Did You Buy New Or Used? Used

What Are Your Three Favorite Things About Scamp  Fiberglass Trailers?

  • Everything about the Scamp is simple! It's easy to hook up and tow.
  • It's lightweight.
  • There is not much to go wrong or that needs fixing.

What Are Your Three Least Favorite?

  • It's small!!
  • There is not a ton of room for storage.
  • The refrigerator is SMALL!! The freezer is basically a small ice box.

Did The Small Size Benefit You? If So, How?

My old rig was an old 27 foot C-Class, it had many issues (breakdowns), and travel days were stressful. My dog was not a fan when we moved from the noise and how it moved. So going with the Scamp eliminated all that, and she likes the Jeep much better.

That's a frame of mind, it was tough getting rid of some things, and from time to time, I wish I had a thing or two I have stored, but it's good to get rid of things I don't need. I also converted half the back of my Jeep Liberty into storage, which works great!

How Would You Rate The Quality Of The Materials In The Trailer?

9- It's a 1982 model with mostly all original parts, I have only had it a short time, but everything is holding up well. The  fiberglass trailer  shell is a huge plus.

What Would You Change About Your Compact Camper Trailer If You Could?

Maybe a couple more feet of flooring! Everything else I feel has a solution.

I think so. I got a good deal when I bought it in AZ. I could easily sell it for more than I spent on it, rare for an RV!

What Would You Advise Someone Looking To Buy This Trailer?

Mine does not have a bathroom! It's the standard model without that option. You CAN get a bathroom with the standard option, as well as with the deluxe option. I like to have a bench seat to work and have a place to relax beside the bed. My customization solution for this was to get a  composting toilet  which has worked out so far. Be sure you know if you can live without a bathroom or not. (Find  small camping trailers with bathrooms .)

Would You Buy This Small Camper Model Again?

I would buy another Scamp for sure.

I bought the Scamp for a couple of reasons. It was time for my old rig to go, I wanted to travel small for my Baja Mexico adventures, and I just bought my Jeep and wanted to find something I could tow with that.

I traveled from Washington State to Arizona to look at and buy the Scamp, and after I bought it, I was sitting in its tiny floorplan and said, "What the hell did I just do?" Haha…I was a little stressed about space and if my dog would like it.

I told myself I would travel in it for the winter and maybe get something bigger. Now, as I sit here, I really love it, I created a space that's good for me, and I have all the room I need most of the time.

I bought a small Clam tent I use from time to time for more space, and I've been making little improvements to make it homier.

Most of the shortfalls can be solved. I added upgrades: a 12-volt fridge I use in addition to my onboard propane fridge, the storage in my Jeep, the compost toilet, and I even bought a projector and screen to watch movies like a big screen!

Airstream Bambi

Owners: Shawna Matsunaga and Ray Marshall

Shawna and Ray are newer RVers, only having been on the road full-time for six months. She and Ray dig their Airstream, but it's a touch small for them and their two dogs for full-time. Other couples may do fine in it.

They went smaller because they wanted their Jeep to be able to tow the small RV camper. Take heed if you are in the market to buy a trailer! Switching out your vehicle to a heavier-duty truck might be a better idea.

Website: Airstream

Dry Weight: Around 2,900 pounds

What Are Your Three Favorite Things About This Small Towable Camper?

  • Easy to tow/small.
  • Good quality.
  • Sleek and sexy- nice aesthetic!
  • No separate areas for shower and toilet. It's a double-function combo shower/toilet area.
  • Bed area can feel small, like a  bunk .
  • Tank (combo black/gray) is small for  boondocking , but it's a small trailer.

It definitely did benefit us with ease of travel! The small size is very to tow and maneuver. However, we prefer to live in something a little bigger for comfort, and we may upgrade to a bigger size in the future.

We wouldn't say it was a "big" problem, but it is a problem, haha. We don't have many belongings, yet we have to store a lot of stuff in our Jeep.

What Would You Change About This Trailer If You Could?

We would love the option to have a bigger fresh water holding tank since we boondock a lot.

Yes ( Are Airstreams worth it? )

It's really a great little trailer! Feels like a tiny rocket ship, haha. Ideal for weekend getaways, vacations, or a full-time solo traveler. If you are planning to live full-time in this trailer and have more than one person, we recommend going up to a bigger floorplan to the 19 or 20-foot size.

No, because our next rig will have bigger tank space for boondocking and a bigger bed.

In our opinion, if you are full-time, you will want to go for the slightly bigger size (19 or 20 foot Bambi). It's doable to live full time in the 16 foot Bambi, but you'll probably want a little more space for amenities.

The 16 foot size was the only thing we felt would be OK to tow with the Jeep without straining it. Also, be aware of the shower/toilet combo in the 16 foot model. It can feel cramped in there while showering. The 19 foot model layouts have a separate toilet and shower space, and the tanks are a little bigger.

If you are into fitness or yoga, you will be limited on exercises you can do inside. We like to be active and spend time outside, but when the weather is snowy or rainy, we want to be able to do some yoga or workouts inside. This is why we are leaning towards upgrading to other configurations.

Overall, we love the Airstream look and feel the quality is great!

Aliner Classic

Owner: Keri

Keri ( @keepupwithkeri ) and I met at an Xscapers New Years gathering. She's super intelligent, and I dug her right away. She and her dog Keith lived in her 2018 Aliner  folding camper  for about a year. Finally, the dream of trying to full-time in this small camper trailer, one step up from tent camping, saw many a downside for her. It took too much energy to set up/take down, so Keri sold it.

She now lives in her self-converted Sprinter van, as the Aliner was too much work and effort in one package than she preferred. This may be more of a good weekender camper. At least it wasn't great for this full-time solo female.

What Are Your Three Favorite Things About This Small Tow Behind Trailer?

  • Easy to heat and cool.
  • Beautiful views from windows and dormer pop-out windows.
  • Simple systems were easy to modify and work on.
  • Constant set up and take down (especially for an average-sized woman- the top was particularly heavy) for fulltime boondocker.
  • Complete lack of overhead storage space and very inaccessible lower storage spaces.
  • Nine pieces came together for every setup and take down, which sometimes feels like a big jig saw puzzle and commitment.

I ended up selling it and getting a van. For one woman and a dog, the size was about perfect. I love the way the van is more nimble and has far less effort in set up / take down.

Inside storage, yes. Parking it? Not so much. It was 15 feet from bumper to tongue, so it fits into almost any spot and on any terrain.

Make the manufacturer provide wind-protection safety features standard for all Aliner models. Almost all members of the Aliner community buy additional after-market mods ('wind cheetah') for more advanced wind protection.

Used, yes. I recouped most of the value when I sold it.

What Would You Advise Someone Looking To Buy This Mini Camper?

I'd highly recommend it for weekend warrior families. It can be towed by almost anything owing to the very lightweight construction.

It did not fare well in gusting winds, such as those common in the winter in the desert Southwest; it's a 3D jigsaw puzzle made of 9 independent parts, which means gaps, rattles, and farts make a lot of noise.

I did worry that I might end up like Dorothy with my trailer getting picked up in the wind and ending up in Oz (or Joshua Tree, when I was camped in Borrego Springs).

Yes, if I were to limit my travel to a few days or I planned to spend weeks in a place. My decision is I'd definitely buy it with the soft dormers. Totally worth it!

I've hit 20 national parks in the last year. I love traveling fast and far, and it was easy to do in this mini trailer.

I work full-time, so the inconvenience of setup/moving and lack of structured storage space ate up a lot of my day and added a lot of unnecessary stress with this type and style unit.

Airstream Basecamp

Owner: Cass Beach

I've known Cass since we met at the RV Nomads premiere in 2018. There, she told me she didn't think she had large enough tanks to boondock full-time.

I laughed when she told me how large they were (they rivaled mine)! If I could do it, she sure could too!

Cass now mostly full-time stays out boondocking as I do, tee-tee-hee. She travels around full-time in her 2018 Basecamp with her two pets.

Website: Airstream Basecamp

Dry Weight: 2585 pounds

# Years Owned: 2 years

What Are Your Three Favorite Things About This Mini Camping Trailer?

  • The kitchen, which offers panoramic views through all of the front and side windows, as well as more counter space than I've seen in most small to medium-sized RVs.
  • The short trailer size makes for easy towing and maneuvering. I can do a u-turn in a four-lane street and have done so many times!
  • I love the two doors (one is a rear door or rear hatch), which both have screens, allowing for a ton of cross ventilation and giving the entire RV a feeling of something much larger than it actually is.
  • The bed (or lack thereof). The cushions are quite firm, requiring additional padding or  camper trailer bedding , which you must then roll up and down daily if you want to use the tables.
  • The bed rests directly against the aluminum interior walls, which are very easily scratched by the dog's claws when he sleeps.
  • A wet bath means if you go to the bathroom right before you shower, you either have to A) stand outside the bathroom and let the fan run for a few minutes or B) shower in all the joys of toilet smells.

I went with the small size because it could be towed by the vehicle I already owned, my Toyota 4Runner, and that really appealed to me. I love the maneuverability of the small size, and it has taught me how to truly live tiny, completely downsize my life, and focus on non-material things.

On the really long work days, something bigger would be nice. But for the towing, adventuring, and  boondocking , I love the tiny RV trailer size I have.

The Basecamp offers a good amount of interior storage. One of the entire benches is storage. It has three cabinets in the kitchen and ceiling cargo nets.

I carry everything I need to live and all of my backpacking gear for the mountains right in the Basecamp.

Depending on the part of the RV, from a 6-10.

The material on the cushions and my floor have seen a lot of use, but still no signs of wear: 10.

The counters are a lightweight material that has dented under the slightest drop of a kitchen utensil: 6.

I would rank everything else from an 8 to a 9.

What Would You Change About This Tiny Trailer If You Could?

My recommendations would be to make the cushions that come with the trailer out of much more comfortable memory foam, so they can be used to sleep on without additional cushioning.

I would also love to see more exterior storage, as very little is offered.

Was This Tiny Camper Trailer Worth The Money?

This is the cheapest Airstream they sell, but still at the high  Airstream camper price . To me, as a full-time home, it was absolutely worth the money.

It had all the features I wanted in just 16 feet, offered a modern look and feel, and depreciates slower than most other RVs. The construction also feels extremely solid, and the insulation seems good. I have stayed cozy during wind storms of over 40mph and winter temperatures down to -15º.

If I had been someone who was only going to be camping a few times a year, I would have purchased something smaller and cheaper (a teardrop trailer!). You can find some great quality travel trailers for less frequent use at lower prices.

It's an amazing layout, offering tons of interior storage (for the size), a "big" kitchen, and an almost king-sized bed in just 16 feet.

I think it's a great utilitarian trailer for boondocking or extensive travel where you are driving miles upon miles, all while offering some modern accessories, touches, and comforts, giving it the Airstream feel.

Just remember, it's still an RV, and it's still going to require repairs and maintenance and have those fun little quirks that all the  brands of travel trailers  will have.

When I purchased the Basecamp, I had no idea if full-time RV living would work for me, and I was nervous about towing something large.

Under those circumstances, I would absolutely buy the Basecamp again, as I love the unit's size, layout, and feel. As it turns out, I ended up absolutely loving this lifestyle and met my boyfriend, who comes to visit me in the RV quite often.

If I had known what I know now, I would have gone with an exterior length 20-25 foot model from the dealership. (Instead, now he's just looking at tiny camping trailers to buy his own, so I can keep my Basecamp as a single person camper.)

As a general tip, make a list of your needs and wants before starting to shop for small travel trailers. My list included items such as enough room for the cat litter, a big bed (at least a  RV queen bed size ) to fit the dog, cat, and I, a comfortable kitchen space to cook in, tons of windows, etc.

I sat down with that list during my small RV trailers search for small  pull behind campers , and it significantly narrowed the results, making the search much easier. Also, knowing the size of larger items you need to fit is critical. For example, when I first showed up to tour the Basecamp, I brought a measuring tape and specifically scoped out an area to put the litter box.

I also stood in the shower for over 5 minutes to ensure the shower felt big enough, all while the salesman sat awkwardly on the bench (and yes, even after two years, it is a very comfortable wet bath). For any RV you look at, compare it to your list of needs and take all the time you need to sit or move around in the ones you check out to ensure they may fit you and your lifestyle.

For the Basecamp, in particular, I would recommend it for someone who likes to cook, loves natural lighting and airflow, doesn't want the typical brown RV interior, and is okay with moving the bed and dining space around every day. It also offers 12-volt tank heaters and a Truma heater, which are a great combination for cooler weather camping.

Towing is a breeze with my SUV; most of the time, I forget the Basecamp is back there. It has a very unique body, so you will be stopped by strangers asking tons of questions, which as a solo traveler, I personally enjoy it as it's a great way to start a conversation.

You can also get a  solar panel  as an option, and it comes standard with a Zamp plug, making it very easy to add  plug-in solar panels  and be boondocking ready right off the lot. Overall, I absolutely love my Basecamp and find it extremely cozy and comfortable compared to other tiny travel trailers.

A little advice: If you are taller or like to entertain guests, there are a few items to consider. First, the bed is almost a "king" size in terms of dimensions, but the rear of the RV is curved. Therefore, you only get the full width and length in the middle of the RV before it starts curving in.

Alone, this is completely fine. However, I'm 5 foot 7 inches, and my boyfriend is 6 foot, so when he comes to visit, we must sleep at an angle to be comfortable. I'd definitely recommend figuring out your sleeping sizes and configuration before buying.

Second, I love to cook for others but have no seating to host any guests. This isn't a big deal to me as we just sit outside, where I would prefer to be anyway.

If you are considering a Basecamp, I would recommend joining one of the Airstream Basecamp Facebook groups. The Basecamp offers an amazing community of owners, and these groups provide some great tips, tricks, and the common repairs/issues and how to address them.

Happier Camper HC1

Owner: Darcy

Darcy volunteered to show her Happier Camper off when I was searching for people with small lightweight campers. Boy, was I excited to hear from someone with a Happier Camper! They are so unique in their look and the interior build.

Here's what it's like to have a cute bubble of a small camping trailer that is modular.

What Are Your Three Favorite Things About This Mini Trailer Camper?

  • I love that I can take everything out and clean it, no carpet or wood.
  • I love the airiness, with all the windows and back hatch.
  • I love that I can hitch it up to the car in just a few minutes.
  • The back hatch lock is not sealed, and water gets into it.
  • As a newish product, it is constantly morphing, and I feel that some of its design was put out on the market before it was really perfected.
  • The awning is pretty wimpy, and now they offer a better one. Currently, I know that one of the main complaints is the wait time.

Does The Size Of This Tiny Trailer Camper Benefit You? If So, How?

I bought this size because I did not want to purchase a bigger car to tow it with. Its size and simplicity suit me well.

There is ample storage.

Since it is modular, everything about it can be changed as my needs change. I suppose I wish the door handles/locks were better and that there was a gutter over the door (I think new models have this).

Because the resale value is so high, yes.

It is perfect for me in its simplicity, and I think the newer models offer better design. Be prepared to wait longer than the company tells you. Also, be ready to have inquisitive people constantly telling you how cute your trailer is!

If I were to purchase a car with greater towing capacity, I might look at other options.

I first heard about the HC1 in 2015, the first year of production, and saved for two years before purchasing one. I fell in love with the ability to change the layout, clean all parts out, and avoid rot and mildew as I have serious allergies.

I have several setups I use, depending on if I am traveling alone, with my dogs, or with my partner. I might choose to use a different layout if I am camping for an academic class or for vacation time.

If I am camping when there is rain and I am inside, I make a cozy nest, but if I am going to be outdoors all the time, I might leave the sink behind and just set the kitchen up outdoors. I can shoulder it into place if I need to because it is so light, and the windows and back hatch enhances my connection with my location.

Happier Camper is a quirky company, and many of the improvements in design have come at the dissatisfaction of owners, who have been the test drivers of their mini pull behind camper.

They have made many modifications since I purchased mine three years ago, and hopefully, they have stabilized a bit. Wait times are a year or more, which frustrates some people.

The Happier Camper community on Facebook is supportive of owners, and we have had super fun meetups in the spring and fall in California.

Rpod RP-180

Owners: Patti and Jim Poston

Jim happily volunteered to talk about his 2016 Rpod when I asked in a Rpod owner forum if they would be willing to participate.

We really wanted to have a Rpod represented in this post as they are so popular on the road, so we appreciate that he jumped in to show and tell!

What Are Your Three Favorite Things About This Small Camper Trailer?

  • It's easily towable, relatively lightweight, and narrow - no need for tow mirrors; it's a joy to see around the trailer when towing.
  • It's very amenable to customization to better fit your lifestyle. Many floor plans of these micro travel trailers have a  camper slide  that gives a larger living space while keeping the narrow tow configuration.
  • I love that it's pre-wired for solar, so I can just plug my suitcase solar panels in.
  • Not a lot of bad things, but the build quality is not the best.
  • Non-Hood River Editions have horrible ground clearance, but Forest River offers 3-inch axle risers as a retrofit.
  • For us, the refrigerator is a bit small.

Stock photo of Rpod 180 interior so you can view the other end

The small size is why we have a r•pod. It's perfect for the two of us, and we can accommodate more with the R-dome (tent that attaches to the r•pod). For us, this micro camping trailer is roomy because we moved up from tent camping.

We have more storage than we need, even on our 2-month trip, although we pack light.

How Would You Rate The Quality Of The Materials In This Small Trailer?

We added an inverter for limited AC electricity when boondocking. I would really like to have pass-through basement storage.

The used market was a little pricey in our area, not a lot lower than MSRP new ( what is my RV worth? ), but in hindsight, it was worth it, and all the new trailer bugs were worked out.

What Would You Advise Someone Looking To Buy This Tiny Trailer?

Check the RV sewer connections to the bottom of the trailer - a notorious weak point of the r•pod. Many Podders have reported the original WFCO converter failed, probably due to vibrations affecting the circuit board. We had to replace ours while on our 2-month-long journey.

And although it's light, please consider loaded weight, your towing capacity, and specifications. A Prius, among other cars, won't tow it.

These trailers are narrow enough to not need tow mirrors.

We upgraded from tent camping, so this is glamping for us. We wanted to have a tow vehicle that was relatively small and maneuverable, so we needed a camper that could be pulled by a small vehicle.

We also do a lot of boondocking and wanted our vehicle to be able to negotiate rough terrain, not just dirt roads (when unhooked; the r•pod's not really suited for rugged offroading). With the r•pod's short length added to our tow vehicle's length, we can still park in a normal double head-to-head parking stall.

We are pretty conservative on the "stuff" we bring, so the r•pod has plenty of storage. We took a 2-month, 10,000-mile trip in the Pod, and we never wished for more camper storage. We're not sure if we are "full-time" in it.

The r•pod allows pretty much full-featured camping with very little stress over the actual driving to get where we're going. And it has a unique look - we constantly get comments about how someone loves our small trailer camper! Definitely a conversation starter!

Casita Spirit Deluxe

Owners: Lindsey and Adam Nubern

Adam and Lindsey full-timed in their  Casita camper  for two years before having a baby. Then they became a part-time roaming trio. It's amazing to see two people live in such a small space.

How did they do it? They don't even mention it is too small for them below. These two are really good at living tiny. Read on...

Website:   Casita Trailers

Dry Weight: 2800 pounds

Length: 17 feet

Towed With:  Ford Explorer

Number Using:  3

FT/Recreational:  We were full-time for two years with two people, now we're part time as a family of three.

# Years Owned:  5 years

What Are Your Three Favorite Things About This Trailer?

  • It's lightweight for towing.
  • It's small, so you can access all parks, campgrounds, and boondocking places.
  • The tininess keeps you accountable to live minimally and stay clean and organized in the trailer.
  • The cooking area of the sink and stove is small.
  • The bathroom is a wet bathroom where the shower and toilet are in the same space, so after a shower, the toilet's wet.
  • The bed only has one side accessible to it. So, if two people are sleeping in the bed, one person has to climb over the other in the middle of the night to use the bathroom.

We love the small size of the Casita Travel Trailer to access any park, campsite, or boondocking spot. And we also like how the small space keeps us accountable to live minimally and stay clean and organized.

There is minimal storage in the Casita Travel Trailer. For us, that was okay. We had lived out of backpacks traveling the world before living in the Casita, so we had enough space for our things.

A good mantra to have with the Casita is "Having less is more." Living full-time with two people in the trailer, we only carried one pot, one pan, a moka pot for coffee, and two each of cups, plates, forks, knives, and spoons.

When we lived in the Casita full-time, we also used our Explorer's back seat and trunk area as our "garage" for tools, bikes, and other things we didn't need access to in the trailer.

7, everything works and does its job.

What Would You Change About This Small Trailer If You Could?

  • Lift the axle. We lifted ours 3 inches, and it helps us better get out of our driveway and handle dips in the road at campsites.
  • Install a propane heater. We ended up installing one, so we could boondock with heat.
  • Not have carpet on the wall and floor. It's hard to keep all the carpet clean. We cover our floor carpet with area rugs.

Yes! Totally worth the money! Used Casitas are a little more expensive than other trailers their size, and ours was a bit above what we wanted to spend.

However, we decided to spend more on a Casita Travel Trailer because they hold their value, and we decided that if it didn't work well for us, we could probably sell it for what we bought it for. Five years later, we're still loving her!

Make sure everyone can fit in the bed and stand up straight in the trailer. We're 5 foot 7 inches and 5 foot 1 inch, have a baby, and it's perfect for us, but some taller friends that visit can't stand up straight and are too long for the bed space.

So, before making the big investment, make sure you can stand and lay down in it.

Absolutely! We love our Casita.

We lived in our Casita Travel Trailer as a young married couple for two years living, traveling, and working together in the trailer full-time. You can take a tour of ours and see us during the buying process on HGTV's Tiny House Hunters show  here.

It is perfect for roaming the US and Canada in. Having a little camper helps you travel spontaneously because you don't have to research everywhere you want to go first to see if you'll fit. Also, it's nice to have a small rig when you're running errands in Walmart and grocery store parking lots. ( Can you park overnight at Walmart? )

When considering the Casita, make sure you can stand up in it, sleep well, and cook in it comfortably. It is tiny, so it's great when the weather is nice, and you can extend your living space outside. However, we tend to travel with the good weather because when it's cold and rainy for a few days, it does become small inside.

Be prepared to have minimal clothing and gear and kitchen appliances and food. We took out the microwave and used that space as a pantry. Also, to be able to boondock more comfortably, we got a  Renogy solar suitcase  for more power, and we installed a propane heater that didn't come on our model.

These small camp trailers are fun! And, a bonus is, when you have a Casita, you're automatically in a new family. Casita owners have a super friendly and supportive community to help each other. Be ready to make fast friends on the road with other mini camper trailer owners! Happy trails from  Adam and Lindsey !

Still Have Questions?

We commonly have people asking specific questions about compact travel trailers, so we planted the most frequent ones we hear below.

How Much Does A Small Camper Cost?

It depends on how small or large the camper is and the materials used to make it. In general, in the 8-12 foot range, the smallest of campers cost anywhere from $11,000 to $25,000.

Larger small pull campers in the 12-18 foot range can run from $15,000 to $60,000+. Buying used means you can shave anywhere from 30-50% off of that cost depending on the year, make, and model of that trailer.

Do Small Campers Have AC?

Some small lightweight pull campers do have AC, and others do not. For some, it's an option that the original owner either chose to get or not. The most basic tiny RV trailers do not have AC and don't offer it as an option.

Are Small Campers Worth It?

Whether a small camper is worth it is up to you. We love them and think they have their place in the camping world. The smaller your camper is, the less there is to maintain and the less that can go wrong with it.

What Is A Micro Camper?

A micro camper is nothing more than a very small camping trailer. It may have nothing but space for a bed and nothing else. They are easy to pull with small trucks or SUVs, and some are so light they can even be moved around by hand.

  • If you are in the market to purchase a small camper to do some camping in, read our article about what to look for when buying a used travel trailer so you know what to be looking out for.

Small trailers are amazing camper trailers when it comes to dry weight, height, (sometimes) budget, freedom, and even easy parking (storage) in your garage with some of the smallest camping trailers.

Either go small and choose a wider variety of spots you can visit, or go bigger and have more headaches with more that can go wrong and fewer places you can camp. If your destination is always a campground, this won't matter to you much.

But if you can handle living in such a small place, especially if it's only for short camping trips, then your preferences might lean towards these types of mini travel trailers. There are so many different styles and different floor plans you're sure to find a cute tiny camper to your liking.

Pack up your family into your easy-to-tow travel trailer, potentially complete with a gas stove, dinette, beds, LED lights, tv, microwave, and a table for feasting. You can head pretty much anywhere on the road, and your travel trailer will take you!

Author: Kelly Beasley

I dedicated myself to living the full-time RV life for over 6.5 years, immersing myself in the unique quirks and joys of the boondocking lifestyle and gaining a wealth of knowledge and experience along the way. In December 2020, my business partner and I made the transition to part-time RVing, but in January 2023, we hit the road once again, this time in our trusty vans. My mission is to help others embrace the RVing lifestyle with confidence and excitement, armed with the knowledge and resources needed to make the most of their adventures. I believe that the more you know, the more you can truly appreciate and enjoy the freedom and flexibility of the open road.

My wife and I have been looking at small camper trailers for twenty years and finally pulled the trigger in Dec 2021. We took the Oliver factory tour and ordered the Oliver Elite, a single axle, double fiber glass hull trailer on an aircraft aluminum frame and took delivery in Sep 2022. The shakedown cruise was 15 glorious days and nights through the mid-Atlantic states. We absolutely love the vehicle. It is built to last a couple of lifetimes.

Oh yes, that trailer will surely outlast you! And easily your grandkids too, lol! Happy to hear you are happy with your Oliver. They are so well made. I think maybe you should have put a little more time into your research tho. (JK 😂)

Too bad more manufacturers don’t make them this way. But then not everyone could afford a trailer! The Oliver’s aren’t cheap but they also hold their value quite well. Happy travels!!!

I came upon your site completely by accident and am so grateful & happy I did. Best site ever. I’m just starting to look for something smaller/lighter (2011 jeep Liberty & DON’T want to have to buy the additional massive truck to tow). I love everything about your site. Great info for every level of travelers BUT the absolute BEST for beginners!! Thanks to u and all for taking the fear, stress and UNcomplicating alot of the process!!!

Hey Elizabeth!

Well gosh, thank you so much for the kudos! We were also beginners once, and know how overwhelming it can be, there’s SO MUCH information out there, and a lot of it is not great or is even incorrect. 😬

Don’t hesitate to ask questions here if you come up stumped on something. We try to help as much and as many people as we can, especially beginners.

Good luck, and be sure to enjoy the process, love!! 💕 (PS, I love your email address)

Thanks for the article. It’s always fun to read about “light” trailers then see “under 3500″ or 4000 lbs. When I was looking for a truly lightweight trailer, I stumbled quite luckily on a tiny little family owned manufacturer in Ontario called Taylor Coach that I never hear mentioned on these types of articles. I have a rear door 14 ft with a wet bath, small kitchen, A/C, furnace, solar, etc. and an almost unheard of 6’4” interior that is 1365 lbs! Built to last, one at a time, from 8ft to 24ft customized. Only issue is the 2 year+ wait time, but if that doesn’t dissuade you, I can’t recommend enough that you visit their site and get on the waiting list: https://taylorcoach.com/

Oh yes, we are familiar with Taylor Coach and know someone who has one. It’s a GREAT setup!!! It’s just not very common or easy to find one used, AND as you mentioned, very long waitlist.

But yes, great for people to know about and hear of this company as well, so thank you for bringing it up!

Thanks for the great article! Nice to hear about the pros and cons of each model. Also, cool to about some of the workarounds to make RV life happier. We went with an Intech RV Explore because we needed something to haul our two Scramblers, go off road, and be towed with our Jeep. Check, check, check.

Thanks for taking the time to send the kudos!

Sounds like you got just the right rig for your needs. Congratulations, and enjoy the ride!!

Thanks for the article. What I love most about small trailers are the owners. They are approachable and affable.

We full-time in an Airstream Caravel 19cb. More than large enough for us to live in without any problem (all 112 sq. ft), yet nimble so that I, the driver, am able to get myself out of problems I’m prone to get myself into. Excellent approach and departure angles and a small turning radius

And, permit me to be snooty, but after raising three kids and caring for elderly parents, we enjoy the Airstream touches and luxuries that we can at last afford.

It’s cool, perpetually so, and by extension, for once in my life I get to be cool, even if only by association.

When people say, “You live in that!? It’s SMALL!” I reply, “Yes, it is a bit smaller than Thoreau’s cabin at Walden, but we do have indoor plumbing, with a procelain toilet, shower, hot water, and ducted A/C.” I can tell from their response, or lack thereof, if, as with small trailer living, they get it or not.

Again thanks for the enjoyable article.

Oh, we tow with a tow package equipped Jeep Gladiator. It has more than enough umph to do the job.

Hey! After three kids and elderly parents, you deserve the best you can get out of life, if you ask me!!! Really happy to hear you are enjoying it and it sounds like the right fit for you. I have yet to hear anyone say “naaaah. I don’t like the look of an Airstream.” 😂

I mean, right?? I picked my trailer because it looked much less like the inside of an RV than pretty much any other I looked at besides Airstreams.

Thanks for the comment! You’re always here for us. 🥰

I love the fact that you went directly to “real” small trailer owners for their input and comments. Getting the information directly from the owners mouths is, in my opinion, the best and most trustworthy. This is why your site is so great! The information is from experience. It is real and trustworthy! Keep up the great work.

Hi Dan! We sure appreciate your input. And we couldn’t agree more! Those who have been actual owners know better than anyone else possibly can. We thank you for your input on this post. You’re one of the clever ones.

Thanks for another great article. I was hoping to see one of the Nucamp teardrops reviewed here as well. Overall this is really useful to help us decide. I’m leaning towards the Tab clamshell or the Airstream Basecamp 🙂

Thank YOU for the kind comment! Yeah, I think I looked for someone with the tiny Nucamp trailers to give their testimony, but couldn’t find anyone. We are so happy that this helped you with your search!

Nothing like hearing an opinion coming from the horse’s mouth…

I am glad that I found his article. My wife and I have been tent camping for awhile and now we are looking to get an RV. We don’t know what we want to get. There are many types to choose from.(class A,B,or C motor homes, travel trailers, truck bed campers etc.) Is there a website that I can visit to do an assessment to see what type will be the best fit for us? I have never used or owned any of these campers before. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.I will be retiring from working full time about 18 months.

We are glad you found this article too!

One of the better ways to figure out what type of RV would fit your full-time RVing lifestyle is to spend A LOT of time going to RV shows or dealerships and seeing what’s available. Spend time in rigs ‘pretending’ you are living. See what they are like with the slide-outs in the travel (in) position to see if you can move around the rig (get to the bathroom when you are traveling, get to the refrigerator for lunch on the road, etc).

I know that RV shows aren’t exactly happening right now, and with your 18 month timeline, not sure how many you will be able to attend. But RV dealers are definitely up and running.

The trick is to spend time alone in a rig, without a salesperson breathing down your neck. Be honest with them. You are just looking/researching and you’d appreciate time alone. They should be fine with that. If not, it’s not the dealership for you. It’s hard to get a feel for a rig when you have someone trying to sell the darn thing and won’t keep quiet.

As far as websites go, well, you’ve discovered what we feel is the best RV education website on the web (nope, not at all biased! 😉 ). If you want to learn more about the different finds of RVs, you can read our overview of RV types which has links to additional posts that further discuss each RV type.

Also see our post on the best RV for full-time living .

And of course check out our post on the best RV brands so you get an idea what RV manufacturers are the ones you should be looking at.

Really? I didn’t know that. I have a friend who is a former Airstream owner and enthusiast and he indicated that the quality has gone down in the last few years. I’ll have to ask him what he means by that.

I’d be curious to know what he means also. Not saying he’s incorrect, but there is a difference between anecdotal ‘evidence’ and actual facts.

Like I said, plenty of Airstream owners have issues with their rigs (at least in the subset that is my group of friends and acquaintances that have Airstreams – and they are a popular choice of full-timers). But show me an RV manufacturer that produces a perfect RV each and every time and I’ll show you a unicorn. 😉

I’m in no way, shape, or form defending Airstream. I am not an Airstream fanboy (quite the opposite if you ask people who know me ). I’m just pointing out that Airstream isn’t a horrible brand, and like all brands (even the good ones) they have quality issues, but you will also find many satisfied Airstream owners.

I’ve had my 2018 Airstream since 2017.. I’ve lived in it full time. Zero problems. My AC is just now making a funny noise but I’ll get it looked at this week.

I had a forest river rockwood before that and 6 months in small things were failing. Door hydraulic, fridge door panel fell off. Wood paneling around the counter coming apart. The dam thing was $25k

I’d rather spend another $25k and have something built to last. Keep in mind RVs have to be able to take a beating! It’s basically in an earthquake when you’re driving.

Thanks for the real-world feedback on Airstream, Glen!

There’s a reason why Airstream makes our list of Best RV Brands whereas Forest River doesn’t.

Can you speak about any quality concerns with newer Airstreams? I’ve heard the company changed a few years ago.

I’m not sure what you mean by the company changing a few years ago. They’ve been owned by Thor Industries since 1980 (Airstream was actually Thor’s first brand and the acquisition was the reason it was formed).

Thor isn’t exactly known for producing high quality RVs, but Airstream is an exception. Having said that, plenty of Airstream owners will tell you that they have problems (some small, occasionally the large one) with their rigs.

However, even the best RV brands will have quality issues. Such is the case when you have a vehicle that is produced via mostly human labor.

What specifically have you heard about Airstream as of late?

Can you please do an article on the differences in quality and value and practicability of the A frame pop up trailers? I’m really interested in the Chalet a frame vs the others, ALL the pros and cons. Thank you so much for your consideration! Diana G

Thanks for writing! We can’t promise that that will happen, but we will keep it under consideration!

Meantime, I am guessing that there are Facebook groups for a-frame owners and enthusiasts. And/or forums. These may be a great places to find out the information you are looking for from those who have been there.

I had a 2017 RPod 179. I would never again buy another one! I had it three months! The door latch broke, the screens popped out! There was condensation between the windows in the front, It had so many warranty issues I took it back and told them to keep it and either give me something different or I was getting a lawyer! I wasn’t waiting 6 months for them to get approval to fix it! Moving on!

Oh no! That sucks for sure, Carla. Lemons come from all manufacturers, whether it’s known as a good manufacturer or not.

What a bummer to get one that keeps having problem after problem. So sorry that that happened to you. ???? Hopefully it didn’t turn you off of all RVs.

They can be awesome when they DO work! LOL! (And knock on wood, I have been VERY lucky with my Crossroads Slingshot trailer. Had it 5 years now and no real issues that it was ‘born’ with. It’s a Thor product, and they aren’t known for quality. Not by a long shot.????)

We also have a Happier Camper and love it. The solar unit on the roof offers ample power.

That’s great! Thank you for the feedback, Pam. : )

Very informative and a great read. Thank you!

Thank you for the positive feedback, Sherri! I’m very glad you found it informative. : )

If you wish to expand on your article about small travel trailers, we have a fiberglass Escape 19’ trailer that we’d be happy to share info about (after owning a 16’ Scamp for 10 years before that). We enjoyed sharing your article. Ilse and Greg Hine

Thank you very much, and thank you for the kind offer! Can I hold you to that offer in the event that I do an article specifically about fiberglass trailers and their owners?

Love this article Kelly. We just got our 2020 Casita Liberty Deluxe in December of last year and after a few trips in it, I am now “wishing” for things that cannot be had in it. I love the quality of the unit, but the 17’ just doesn’t provide enough room for what I had hoped would be adequate space. The same cons mentioned by the above Casita owners would be our complaints as well. After checking out the Escape site, we could have gotten a 19’ for slightly more than the 17’ and it would have given us just what we needed. We may eventually go that route, but we love the fiberglass RVs. Hold their value and easy to maintain.

Awe, well I’m sorry to hear that your new Casita isn’t just what you wanted. I bet that killed the excitement a bit!

Have you checked out the Bigfoot trailers? After getting inside a 17′ Bigfoot, I decided I’d much rather have one of those than the Casita with the seating area. Not sure what kind of room you want but MAN, the straight walls of the Bigfoot combined with a big window at both ends sure opens the thing up!

Anyway, the good news is that you can probably sell it for very close to just as much as you bought it for! There’s a wait list, right? I’m guessing there are people who don’t want to wait so long to get a new one. Boom- you can give them immediate satisfaction! They are SO in demand!

So I’m glad you appreciate this article, but sorry you didn’t see it sooner. Maybe it would have changed your mind, maybe not.

At least you’re in the game! Keep taking trips in it, put a for sale sign on it, and I’m guessing you can sell it quite quickly! If you do, good luck!

12 Best Travel Trailers Under 4,000 Pounds

April 14, 2021 by Charlotte Phillips

All of our reviews are based on exhaustive research, industry experience and whenever possible, hands-on testing. When you make a purchase using one of our chosen links we’ll receive a small percentage of the proceeds. This supports the site and keeps Jeffsetter running. You can read more here .

If you’re considering traveling in an RV but aren’t sure where to begin, a travel trailer might be a good match for you!

However, the biggest unknown when it comes to travel trailers is knowing what you can and can’t tow. But chances are likely your vehicle can tow something, including certain travel trailers!

Are you looking for a light enough rig to hit the road with ? Then this list is for you! Let’s go over some of the best travel trailers under 4000 pounds, and some other extremely helpful information!

What Weight Can I Tow, Really?

If you’re concerned about towing your travel trailer, you should be aware of the many different weights that are worth knowing before you hit the road. They matter because an even distribution of weight is key to towing safely and securely. Plus, you never want to go beyond what your tow vehicle can handle!

Thankfully, these weights and numbers are fairly easy to understand, and manufacturers always include a starting weight of any travel trailer they make, so that you won’t be entirely in the dark about how much your trailer weighs. Even if you buy used, the weight of your rig should be readily available from the manufacturer or elsewhere. If you’re really in a pinch, you can even weigh your travel trailer at home .

Here are some of the terms you should know when it comes to the weight of your rig, and what it means for you when it comes to finally purchasing a lightweight travel trailer!

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)

This is the maximum allowable weight of a fully-loaded trailer, including liquids, passengers, cargo, and the tongue weight of any towed vehicle (most travel trailers can’t tow an additional vehicle). This is the weight you will want to know before departing on your first camping trip with your new travel trailer! It is the most a trailer can weigh in total, as determined by the trailer manufacturer.

Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR)

GCWR is the maximum weight of your vehicle with a trailer attached, as determined by the vehicle manufacturer. This means the weight of both the tow vehicle and the trailer together. It also includes any cargo or load placed in either vehicle.

Dry Weight or Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW)

UVW means the weight of an RV as built at the factory, by the manufacturer. It does not include the weight of the cargo, fresh water, propane gas, occupants, etc. It is the weight of the trailer with nothing extra in it, and is the weight you should know when shopping for a new travel trailer!

Tongue Weight or Hitch Weight (HW)

Also known as tongue weight, HW is the amount of weight of the trailer that is carried on the hitch. You will need to know this weight when shopping for a proper hitch. Hitches are rated both by their towing capacity and their tongue weight. You can learn more about tongue weight capacity (and tricks for increasing it) in this article .

Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)

GAWR is the maximum allowable weight each axle assembly is designed to carry. This is important to know because it’s possible to be under the GVWR and still exceed an axle rating, depending on how you load the RV with your personal cargo.

This is a lot of information to digest, but once you get more familiar with travel trailers and what it all means, the various weights of your trailer will make a lot more sense! You will come to understand why it is necessary to know these weights and the importance of staying within certain ranges depending on your tow vehicle.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Travel Trailers?

So you’ve looked at the various weights necessary for towing a travel trailer. You know your weight limits for your tow vehicle, and you have to keep it under 4000 pounds. Great! There are lots of options out there for you.

But what else about travel trailers makes them a good choice over truck campers or Class B, C, or V RVs for you? And what might be the downsides?

Pro: Travel Trailers Can Be Left

The main perk of travel trailers in my book is their ability to be left at camp. If you’re on traveling to a new place, and seeing new sights, the last thing you want is to travel in an overly large motorhome or camper. The best part of a travel trailer is the ability to leave it behind! Once you unhitch your RV from your vehicle, you’re free as a bird!

Con: Towing Can Be Stressful

No matter what specific type of travel trailer you look at, you need to be prepared for one very important detail: your trailer must be towed. This might not be what you are hoping for, but there are a lot of positives to towable travel trailers versus motorhomes. However, towing takes a lot of practice and concentration, and RVs are notorious for not being the easiest to drive , so you may consider this a con.

Pro: Light Doesn’t Mean Compromising

Another perk of travel trailers is their lightweight design . Motorhomes and coaches guzzle diesel fuel or gasoline, a huge drawback if you are only planning a small budget for your upcoming trip.

Some travel trailers are so light that you can tow them with the smallest of cars, which means you won’t have to worry about renting or borrowing someone’s large truck to tow your new rig!

Con: Trailers Are Small

No matter what, a travel trailer may feel like fairly tight quarters . If your tow vehicle can only handle the smallest of rigs, you may not find a travel trailer large enough for your travel plans, especially if you’re traveling with a dog or other pet . No matter how long the trip, travel trailers never feel like they have enough space!

However, there’s always the great outdoors if you’re looking for some time and space to reflect, and the travel trailer will be there when you are feeling relaxed and ready to turn in for the night!

Types Of Travel Trailers

If the weight limits and pros and cons haven’t changed your mind, the fun research can begin. There are many different types of travel trailers out there! Heck, you can even find travel trailers with two bathrooms in some cases !

All travel trailers are towed behind a vehicle using classic ball hitches. But how else do they vary from one another? Let’s take a look!

Classic Travel Trailers

The most classic travel trailer you can get may be the right fit for you. And that’s because there are so many different fits! A classic travel trailer is towed behind your vehicle using a ball hitch and ranges in length from 10-35 feet. These classic trailers often have four tires total, and are the most traditional setup when it comes to the interior (bedroom, bathroom, living area, kitchen).

Slide-outs are also a popular feature on nearly all newer travel trailers, allowing more space on a lightweight frame. Given the range of length, weight, and specifications possible on classic travel trailers, it is recommended that you check out all of the necessary weight requirements before purchasing one. Some trailers require a heavy-duty truck for towing, despite their small size.

My vintage rig may only be 19 feet long but given its old metal frame, I need a V8 truck to tow it! A classic travel trailer may give you the space you want, but make sure your vehicle can tow it! You may also consider the durability of travel trailers; if you’re planning to offroad or venture anywhere remote and unpaved, some travel trailers may not be made for that sort of trek.

The classic travel trailers on this list will be under 4000 pounds, but not all of them are created equal. If you are planning to do your own research and shopping, don’t forget to check your weight limits first.

Toy Hauler Trailers

Looking for a home on wheels that will also transport all of your other recreational toys? A toy hauler does exactly what it says in the name, and might be a good choice for you if you have a lot of other fun vehicles! Toy haulers are towable rigs and some of the largest travel trailers out there.

They come with a fold-down ramp often at the back end of the trailer, perfect for wheeling out your ATVs, motorcycles, jet skis, and whatever else you can fit back there! These trailers are designed as a half garage, half living space, with various different layouts affecting the style. The sky’s the limit in terms of customizing your toy hauler but at the end of the day, you need a vehicle that can tow it!

Toy haulers are often the heaviest of travel trailers, as they are carrying even more vehicles inside of them! These are the peak of recreational vehicles, allowing you the maximum amount of entertainment possible, but just make sure you can handle the weight!

However, there are some toy haulers on the market that are under 4000 pounds. You may not be able to bring the whole family plus every single recreational item you own, but there are options out there.

Teardrop Trailers

Now that you’ve seen the biggest travel trailer options, let’s take a look at the smallest: teardrop trailers! These little guys are amazing for those of you hoping to tow with your small car, as most teardrops weigh less than 1,000 pounds to tow! What a great idea, making a camper so little! This also means it will be easy to store at your home. What’s the catch?

As I’m sure you might’ve guessed, these trailers are tiny. So much so that for the most part, teardrop trailers only have enough space for a mattress inside. A kitchen is often built off the back of the trailer, which means your cooking must be done outside . There are rarely ever bathrooms, which could be a deal breaker for some of you new campers out there.

However, teardrops are amazing little trailers and are so easy to tow! Their kitchens are often high-tech and amazing to have while camping, and I can’t think of a better trailer to bring along on short road trips or wonderful weather outings. These little teardrops are great for you adventurers out there looking to off-road it or travel more ruggedly, and they will almost always weigh less than 4000 pounds.

Pop-Up Travel Trailers

Unconcerned about the elements and looking for the best of both worlds when it comes to trailer towing? How about a pop-up travel trailer, which brings the best of towing, size, and budget to you?

Pop-up trailers are inconspicuous at first, residing inside a flat, easily towable frame. When you arrive at camp, the canvas sides can pop up to create your camper, much larger than teardrops and lighter weight than toy haulers or classic travel trailers. It is a perfect combo of RV and tent and is recommended primarily for camping where the weather is nice.

Some pop-ups even have more rigid sides to their tents in order to better your experience if camping in a colder climate. Given the extra interior space, some pop-ups include bathrooms and living spaces, and usually always have a kitchen. This may make pop-ups a good fit for you if you’re worried about the weight of your rig but don’t want to sacrifice space.

The Best Travel Trailers Under 4000 Pounds

While RVing gets more and more popular, the demand for lightweight rigs has skyrocketed. Here’s what you have all been waiting for the ultimate list of travel trailers under 4000 pounds!

Best Classic Travel Trailer: Sonic Lite by Venture RV

sonic light under 4000 pounds

Looking for a classic travel trailer with many floorplan options, all of which are under 4000 pounds? The Sonic Lite may be what you’re looking for. Venture RV’s single-axle travel trailer offers solid construction, with floorplans starting out at a fuel-saving 3,000 pounds!

Sonic Lite features the most interior storage in its class, which as a full-timer, I absolutely need! Interiors are surprisingly spacious – there’s ample storage and this rig boasts many features on a more compact scale. This travel trailer is engineered with a one-piece seamless fiberglass roof system. By arching the roof front to back, this system provides a more durable roof that shouldn’t need resealing . This means when it rains, the water runs off, making all of my water worries a thing of the past!

All of the floorplans vary in terms of their offerings, but almost all include a bedroom with overhead storage, a full-length shirt closet, and StorMore nightstands with 110V outlets and USB charging ports. Although I prefer to not look at my phone before bed, I need an alarm to get me up in the morning, so the charging ports and nightstands are super helpful.

Double bunk floorplans offer Teddy Bear bunk mattresses, and each bunk has its own window which is perfect for guests when they stay over! The bathrooms include a porcelain foot-flush toilet, tub or shower surround, and skylight to let all the heat and steamy air escape.

Sonic optimizes every possible opportunity to offer virtually unlimited storage, which is a huge perk with lightweight RVs . Exterior features include a power awning with LED lights, nitrogen-filled radial tires, and slam-latch baggage doors with magnetic catches. I could talk about this camper all day, but to round it up, there’s simply so much on offer with the Sonic Lite, you’ll just have to check them out for yourself here!

Best Teardrop Trailer: iCamp Elite

icamp elite travel trailer

Any teardrop trailer should be under 4000 pounds, which means options are close to endless. However, the iCamp Elite is one of the few teardrops out there with both a shower and a toilet ! Not to mention an interior kitchen! These luxuries may seem silly to mention, but finding the perfect teardrop can be tricky, but I think the iCamp might the process a bit easier.

The iCamp Elite is a fully laminated travel trailer. The body is reinforced with aluminum tubing frames, and a high gloss fiberglass skin is laminated over structural Styrofoam made by the Dow Chemical Company. I love that the interior walls are covered with wallpaper for luxury and easy care, whilst underneath is a strong structure I know will support me on all the adventures yet to come in the future!

The furniture is a sandwich structure made with solid wood and high-grade plywood, before being finished with semi-gloss PU paint for style and durability. The furniture is curved and although I think it looks great, it’s also functional, as it makes for the best use of the space. This teardrop is equipped with the most classic travel trailer amenities and best of all, it’s fitted with a spacey one-piece modular bathroom with shower and toilet.

This may not be the first rig you think of when someone says teardrop travel trailer (don’t worry, there are a couple of other more traditional looks on this list!), but it’s an option I simply couldn’t skip. Best of all, I can tow it with ease because it weighs less than 2000 pounds! You can learn more about this compact travel trailer here .

Best Pop-Up Travel Trailer: Clipper Camping Trailer 107LS by Coachmen

clipper coachman light travel trailer

There’s nothing I enjoy more than getting out and exploring, and with an easy setup, this Coachmen is well worth considering! This is a tow and store trailer, which folds down to create such a compact rig for storage! Coachmen have been a big player in the RV game for some time, and their reliability stretches from their more traditional trailers into their exclusive pop-ups!

There are options such as two queen beds, a kitchen, and many additional features- did I mention all of this for under 2000 pounds? It’s all part of the Clipper Camping Trailer ! I enjoy relaxing outside, so the awning offers ideal protection from the elements, and when the weather gets a bit too gnarly, I can get cozy inside as the 70″ gauchos will provide plenty of comforts.

I’m able to cook meals from scratch using the two-burner range, and washing up is a breeze with the deep bowl acrylic sink. The residential laminated countertop offers space to place all the ingredients I can think of!  There’s also an optional Off-Road package, offering 15″ off-road tires and a spare, plus length stabilizing extended jacks and more to explore even further each trip!

Each Clipper is built on an E-coated tubular steel frame, with cable supported structured platform bed system, the J-track metal door hook system, and Velcro attached valances, so I can trust this rig is built to last. Plus removable curtains and cushions provide a comfortable and flexible RV experience.

Without a proper bathroom, this may not be the best choice for you, but pop-ups pack a lot of features into a lightweight frame! It may be possible to hook up a portable shower outside, and a cassette toilet inside to improve practicality, so don’t wipe this trailer off your list just yet! Plus the option to store a pop-up trailer in your garage or elsewhere is an awesome perk, and you can check out the rest of the Clipper Camping Trailer by clicking here.

Best On A Budget: Micro Minnie 1708FB by Winnebago

micro mini

A mainstay and a family name, Winnebago has been regarded as one of the best in the RV business for quite some time. They aren’t reinventing the travel trailer wheel, but the Micro Minnie 1708FB is a comfortable and lightweight classic, all with an affordable price tag!

If the smallest Micro Minnie floor plan doesn’t fit the bill, there are ten others to choose from, ranging in size from 19 feet to 25 feet. No matter what, these trailers remain lightweight, easy to tow, and comfortable inside! Winnebago has thought about where to place windows for the best cross breezes, as well as keeping the kitchen and living area open which I especially love as nothing is worse than a cramped, stuffy RV!

As I’ve said before, I love spending as much time outside in nature as possible, so therefore, the patio speakers, motorized awning, and LED lighting are big draws for me! There’s even seemingly endless exterior storage to make packing up a breeze and provides space to keep extra blankets for when evening temperatures drop. The Micro Minnie’s dry weight is just over 3,000 pounds, making it lightweight but probably still necessary to own a larger towing vehicle.

The price on this trailer can’t be beat and it’s definitely the most budget-friendly on this list. If you’re hoping to start your travel trailer journey with tradition and budget in mind, the Micro Minnie is perfect for you and your lightweight trailer goals! It also made our list of the best travel trailers for solo travel, and you can check out all of the features of the Micro Minnie by clicking here .

Best Toy Hauler: Sportsmen Classic 130RB

2023 KZ RV Sportsmen Classic 180TH Ultra Lightweight Travel Trailer Toy Hauler

The construction of this Sportsmen Classic is impressive and gives me the peace of mind I need when traveling around the country! They even offer a lifetime warranty on the Dicor Tufflex PVC roof membrane which is something I haven’t come across with many travel trailers at all!

There isn’t simply one Sportsmen to fit every RVer, and that’s why there are several options and add-ons available. I’m particularly drawn to the Off-Road Package which features aluminum rims, mud tires, additional ground clearance, a double entry step, and an electronically controlled heated holding tank so I won’t have to worry about water freezing come winter.

You can learn more about the Sportsmen Classic and everything it offers here .

Best Fiberglass Trailer: Escape 19 by Escape Trailers

escape travel trailer

Given that I’m currently full-time in a 19-foot vintage rig, I love to keep an eye on comparable models I might want to upgrade to in the future. The Escape 19-foot model has every amenity you (and I) might be looking for in a lightweight and waterproof fiberglass shell, just under 4000 pounds dry!

The Escape 19 includes lots of room for storage and the ability to sleep 5 with an optional cot, all while being able to be towed by an SUV or small truck. This compact and efficient trailer is a best seller and one of the most regularly personalized trailers at Escape. The solid one-piece fiberglass shell is strong, durable, easy to clean, and completely waterproof, meaning I won’t be facing structural issues in the future, allowing the resale value to remain high!

This slightly longer model includes a wet bath, an optional raised frame, and loads of standard features to make for a comfortable RV vacation. Its non-standard features are also impressive, including solar, additional storage hatches, and interior outlets, making boondocking and going off-grid possible! Every Escape is made to order from the manufacturer which is a unique situation if finding a used model is difficult, as a new one can be made exactly how you like it!

Escape trailers also allow for customization of the flooring, countertop, and fabric choices; there is a small additional fee for bringing them your own materials but it is rare to have the option to customize to your heart’s content! I’m saving up for an Escape, and if you’re interested you may want to put a deposit down for their lengthy waiting list now…

Find out more about the Escape and all its features here.

Best Off-Road Trailer: The Classic Teardrop Trailer by Timberleaf

classic travel trailer

The name itself can’t be beaten when it comes to teardrop trailers, and Timberleaf knows modern teardrops like no other. Their Classic model is everything I know I’d want when it comes to a teardrop trailer, with even more customizable options than I thought possible in such a small space!

Coming in at 1,500 pounds dry, this little guy can be towed by almost any standard vehicle. The main perk of ordering a Timberleaf trailer, however, is their attention to the suspension. The Classic Teardrop can come in 3 different suspensions, varying depending on the expected level of adventure. There’s even a totally off-road option for those expecting to be off the beaten path!

There’s no bathroom with this teardrop, but there is an amazing kitchen off the back. Not having a bathroom might be a dealbreaker, but there’s always the option of bringing a cassette toilet along. If I owned this little rig, I’d probably fit a small cassette toilet or stay at a campground for a few days to use the facilities.

As an avid cook, I’m really impressed with the kitchen on this rig. It’s fully customizable, the galley is a stunner, and I sacrifice nothing in terms of comfort (except of course a dishwasher!). The interior itself is clean and fits a queen bed so I know a good night’s sleep is pretty much guaranteed! It includes tons of storage too so I don’t have to worry about bringing too much.

The best part of the Classic Teardrop for me has got to be its large skylight over the bed. Bringing the outdoors in, this skylight is the biggest offered in the teardrop industry, and I couldn’t even imagine how beautiful the night sky looks through it. It may be small, but this trailer makes a huge impact!

You can learn more about this classic teardrop trailer from Timberleaf by clicking here.

Most Unique: The Cricket by Taxa Outdoors

cricket under 4000 pounds

I have to start off by saying that this is not your mother’s trailer. In fact, this little guy is the most unique trailer on this list! The Cricket pop-up travel trailer by Taxa Outdoors is made for adventurers, outdoor enthusiasts, and designers. How can it please all of these types of people? Through one-of-a-kind building and design.

First off, this little guy is tiny: it’s only 15 feet long, less than 7 feet across, and weighs 1,700 pounds dry. While there are countless non-standard features, the Cricket comes built out with a full bed, kitchen, and loads of storage for such a small space. It also has an included cafe table, a standard entry door, and a back hatch that opens, allowing even more of the outside in.

The roof pops up, as is the way of pop-up travel trailers, providing an extra 3 feet of headroom and windows! I don’t like feeling cramped in an RV, but as I’m tall, this happens quite often! I like that I can easily stand up in the Cricket and won’t feel claustrophobic at all. These little guys can also come with a portable toilet, outdoor shower, and awnings to fully enclose your outdoor needs. There are also additional roof racks for storage, but these don’t come standard. This is frustrating but may be worth it to bring lots of additional equipment and gear camping!

What else can be said about the Cricket, besides its eye-catching good looks? It may be at the higher end of the budget and be a bit too unique for the average camper, but if you are up for the challenge, this little pop-up might be exactly what you’ve been searching for! Best With A Bathroom: r-pod RP-180 by Forest River

r-pod Exterior Image

As an Oregon state camp host, I see these little r-pod trailers everywhere. Ranging in size from 17 feet to 20 feet, r-pod trailers are all the rage right now. I can’t help but wonder why, and now I know. Forest River has been in the business for a long time, and they know what RVers are looking for, especially when it comes to lightweight camping!

The r-pod RP-180 is the smallest trailer of this model that still comes with a bathroom. I had no idea how lightweight they could be, coming in at under 3,000 pounds dry! 18 feet shouldn’t be too difficult to control on the road , and I’m comforted knowing I have every amenity I need at a weight I can tow. However, there are around 11 different floor plans to choose from, most all very lightweight and easy to tow, but make sure to confirm your weight limits before falling in love.

With a powder-coated steel frame that resists corrosion, this trailer requires little to no maintenance, although I’d definitely still winterize when the cold season is near! It can also be designed and ordered with many upgrades such as an entertainment system, solar panels, and even a screened-in awning so I can choose the amenities I need most.

With an awning, one easy-to-operate slide, and boasting tons of interior and exterior storage, I feel comfortable camping anywhere, anytime in this trailer. Even if I’m simply camping for the weekend, this r-pod has everything I need to get cozy and enjoy the great outdoors, all on an affordable luxury budget!

Best Double/Dual Axel: Palomino SolAire Ultra Lite 147H

SolAire Ultra Lite Exterior Image

Weighing in at just 3,408 pounds, the Palomino SolAire Ultra Lite 147H is a dual-axel travel trailer that really manages to pack a punch! Although it’s lightweight and measures a modest 19′ 1″ in length, the SolAire 147H includes luxury features such as a power awning with LED lights, Furrion entertainment system, 13,500 BTU air conditioning, stainless steel fixtures, and more!

Sometimes, it’s the little things manufacturers bring to the table that make all the difference for me. Living full-time in a travel trailer, I need a functional space that doesn’t compromise on aesthetics, and that’s what has been achieved with this Palomino SolAire. The dual axel provides enhanced durability and capability, whilst the power tongue jack brings security once I’ve made it to my destination.

The exterior of this trailer is actually pretty modern, with a white hi-gloss finish, keeping things sleek and clean which is something I want from an RV. If you’re new to RVing, you may not know exactly what you need from a rig, and Palomino has made this easy as there are simply countless optional extras with this rig including a countertop extension, theatre seating, AC in the bedroom, an even a washer/dryer. However, all of these options are floorplan dependant, so they may not work in the 147H so it’s worth double-checking!

I love that this trailer has a full bathroom! As you’ve already seen from our list so far, not all lightweight trailers are equipped with a bathroom, but this SolAire has a full shower, sink, and toilet for ultimate convenience! As I love to cook up a feast for friends and family in my rig, I would prefer the kitchen to be a bit bigger with more countertop space, but this isn’t really too big of a problem as the dinette table could act as additional prep space if needed, and I can always grill outside too!

Best 4-Season Trailer: Opus Camper OP LITE

used travel trailer under 4000 lbs

I first heard about Opus Campers a couple of years ago, and I still think they are some of the most innovative, creative travel trailers on the market today! There are a few different Opus models available, but I want to talk about the Opus Camper OP LITE as it’s ideal for camping year-round. I know what you’re thinking…this trailer looks more like a tent! Well, hear me out because this is one ingenious piece of kit able to transform vacations on the road.

For starters, this trailer weighs just 3,527 pounds and still manages to fit a full kitchen, fridge, slide-out storage, queen-size bed, and a sizeable lounge space. The AIR OPUS system inflates this rig in under 2 minutes. One of the things that frustrated me with trailer life sometimes is the length of time I spend getting my rig into position and set up ready to use, so this is a big bonus in my eyes! You can see a full walkthrough and setup shown in the video below:

The ability to get the OP LITE set up in a couple of minutes is ideal in winter when it might be raining, windy, or snowing. It’s easy to inflate the trailer with just the press of a button as the inflation technology is powered by the 12v compressor that’s pre-installed in the OP LITE. As I spend all of my time traveling on the road, I need a trailer able to handle the harshness of both summer and winter.

Therefore, I think the addition of the inflatable AIR Annex is well worth it! The annex fits securely to the trailer tent and offers a substantial shaded space that’s protected from the sun and rain too! The kitchen in the OP LITE is an exterior one in the form of a slide-out which I’m actually quite fond of, as it means there’s less going on in the main living area, keeping it light, open, and spacious.

The biggest standout feature for me with this trailer, however, is how off-road-ready it is. I love camping in the heart of nature and spending as much time in the wilderness as possible, but unfortunately, winter weather often makes tracks muddy and difficult to drive on – especially when towing a travel trailer! But these harsh weather conditions aren’t an issue with the OP LITE.

The trailer has a robust suspension system, galvanized steel chassis, articulating hitch, twin shock absorbers, trailing arm suspension, and a 360-degree hitch rotation for sharp corners. All of these incredible features come with a pretty high price tag, but the OP LITE truly is one of a kind.

You can check out more details about the OP LITE here.

Best Trailer With Slide-Out: 2023 Jayco Jay Feather Micro 166FBS

Jay Feather Micro

Lightweight travel trailers can often be on the smaller side, and this is great for solo travel or weekend adventures, but what about couples or small families? Well, the 2023 Jay Feather Micro 166FBS is a small trailer with an exterior length of 19′ 8″ and a height of 10′ 6″ with the additional air conditioner. What makes this trailer unique, however, is the single slide where storage and a sofa space are created.

Slides on an RV are fantastic space enhancers, and the slide on this Jay Feather Micro trailer allows for ample floor space, making the rig feel light and airy. Although this trailer is lightweight, it does creep slightly over 4,000 lbs, with a UVW of 4,025, but I wanted to add it to our list as it has so much to offer for such little weight!

As you’ve already seen from many of the other trailers on this list, small sometimes means compromise, but not with this Jayco! It has a spacious kitchen fitted with attractive cabinetry, a microwave, fridge, pantry, sink, and worktop space so I can cook to my heart’s content! I like that Jayco has also prioritized external features with this trailer by including an exterior fridge and a sizeable 11′ awning for entertaining guests no matter the weather.

The bathroom space is also impressive, with a full shower, toilet, and sink in the corner of the trailer. Having a bathroom may not be the be-all and end-all for every RVer, but a bathroom is something I don’t want to sacrifice on the road. I love the range of interior finish options as it means each RVer can customize certain areas to exactly how they want.

This travel trailer does creep slightly over 4,000 lbs, but it’s a fantastic option with a slide-out and everything I could possibly imagine an RVer would need on the road!

You can explore more from Jayco and the Jay Feather Micro 166FBS by clicking here .

Towing a lightweight travel trailer is easier now than it has ever been before. No matter your specific amenity needs or wants, there’s a model and design out there for you. And all for under 4000 pounds! Just be sure your tow vehicle has the capacity to tow the travel trailer you choose and you should be good to go for any and all adventures!

Important Camper Weight Terms

When scouting for a travel trailer, there are some terms you may come across which may be confusing. Understanding these weight terms will make your search easier and less confusing.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) : This is the maximum weight of the vehicle or trailer when fully loaded for travel. This includes the unloaded vehicle weight, extra equipment or accessories, cargo, passengers, and liquids. The trailer and tow vehicle each have their own GVWR.

Unloaded Vehicle Weight:  This is the dry weight of the camper with no gear, no fluids, and no additional items. This is the exact structure weight before it’s prepped to hit the road.

Dry Weight: Dry Weight is like Curb Weight, except all of the camper’s consumables such as washer fluid, oil, fuel, coolant, etc. are not added to the calculation.

Cargo Carrying Capacity:  This is the highest amount of weight your cargo and gear should amount to. You can weigh your items separately before loading, to carefully keep track of your cargo’s weight.

Gross Combined Weight Rating: The GCWR is the total weight of absolutely everything. When you total the vehicle, everything inside the vehicle, the towing apparatus, the gears, and the trailer, it should be less than this number.

Why Choose Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Bunk beds save space in floor plans, giving you more room to walk about. Some bunkhouses contain beds in a loft, which maximizes vertical space and gives you extra storage space. Travel trailers are often smaller, lighter, and less expensive than fifth wheels and toy haulers.

Smaller travel trailers are ideal for first-time RV owners since they are easier to pull. Don’t be fooled by classifications, though; travel trailers are more than simply basic RVs . Travel trailers with bunkhouses are also available in mid-range and premium versions, with a choice of appealing features.

Final Thoughts Regarding Weights

Many times, you will see websites that publish RV weights without mentioning the type of weight or simply referring to dry weight (UVW). However, remember that when towing a camper with your truck, you must consider all weights and loads, including people. So, the Gross Weight(GVWR) is, in my experience, the only weight that matters when you are trying to understand if you can or not pull the RV. I don’t usually give much importance to dry weight, because I am looking to have my RV fully loaded.

So, the gross weight, from my point of view, is an important weight that I will consider to know if I will be able to tow the travel trailer or not. This Gross Weight Rating (GVWR) is the sum of the Dry Weight (also known as the UVW or shipped weight) and the Load Capacity weight of the camper and is called the gross weight, total weight, also known by its acronym “GVWR” weight.

Always consult the owner’s manuals of vehicles and accessories before choosing to purchase and tow an RV. Also, be fully aware of the towing capacity of your vehicle according to the configuration you are using. Towing capacity will vary depending on the load, vehicle configuration, the number of passengers, and accessories. For your safety and the safety of others on the road, check towing capacities before you hit the road and consult with professional help if necessary.

About John Smith

For more than 30 years I worked in the exciting world of RV manufacturing. I liked knowing that I could improve the campers with customer feedback and see the improvements and upgrades on floor plans, delivering the best designs and the best quality RVs, year after year. After traveling with my family in RVs and small rented campers across the USA, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and even North Africa, I feel that I must share personal experiences, guidance, concerns, tips, and news. At Camper Outdoor, we share our biggest passion, weekend getaways in a camper, RV vacations, extended stays in RV parks, the quiet life of senior couples who choose to spend more time enjoying their RV, and boondocking experiences (which as in the beginning was unsuccessful, we have good tips to avoid the same thing happening to you!). Enjoy this website created just for you!
