EA SPORTS PGA TOUR Beginner’s Guide – Tips and Features

2 1

Golf isn’t necessarily an easy game to play, but it looks simple on the outside, right? “Hit the ball with the club until it gets in the hole”. Sure, that’s what the game is boiled down to its most basic parts, but that’s also negating the practice and skill that goes into “hitting the ball good”.

It can take years and years to “git gud” at golf in real life as you build up muscle memory and technique to do the things that are required of you, but thankfully you can enjoy the thrill of the game without subjecting your body to the sun and other elements.

There were other video games that tried to keep the throne warm in its absence, but EA Sports PGA Tour is back after many years to take its rightful place as the best golf simulator game on the market, and rightfully so. I remember playing the previous EA Sports golf game back in 2014 or so, and everything I’ve played since then just seems… not as good. EA Sports PGA Tour though, now that’s an instant classic to me.

If you’re also excited to jump on the PGA Tour bandwagon, you might be able to make use of some helpful tips and tricks. Well look no further, because the following EA Sports PGA Tour Beginner’s Guide has enough information to get you up and running. So hop in your cart and get ready to tee off, because we’re about to get down to business!

Customize your golfer

Before diving into gameplay, take time to customize your golfer’s appearance, equipment, and swing style. The game offers a wide range of visual customizations, from facial features and body types to clothing and accessories. Select a swing style that best matches your preferences, as it will influence your gameplay experience.

Equipment is essential to your golfer’s performance. Choose from various club heads, shafts, and grips that suit your playstyle and help you perform optimally on the course. As you progress in the game, you can unlock and upgrade your equipment to further enhance your golfer’s abilities.

Start your career

EA Sports PGA Tour provides an engaging career mode, allowing you to kick off as an amateur golfer and climb your way up to the PGA TOUR. Start by participating in premier amateur events, the Korn Ferry Tour, or even the PGA TOUR itself. As an amateur, you’ll get the chance to compete in a range of championships, ultimately leading to Q-school, where you’ll battle it out for a place on the Korn Ferry Tour. Once you’ve dominated the amateur championships, you can score invites to prestigious tournaments like the Masters and the U.S. Open.

Skill progression and shot types

The Game incorporates an RPG-style progression system, enabling you to develop your golfer’s abilities over time. Accumulate XP and skill points in areas such as power, driving, approach, short game, and putting. As you earn skill points, you can unlock new shot types and advance them from bronze to silver, gold, and even higher levels. Enhancing shot types boosts their effectiveness, allowing you to tackle increasingly difficult courses and situations.

The game presents an extensive array of shot types to provide you with increased control and adaptability, empowering you to address various challenges on the course. There are 20 shot types in the game, each with a unique profile that impacts ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, and shot dispersion. These shot types fall under four classifications: Driving, Approach, Short Game, and Putting. The following are explanations of each shot type featured in the game.

Driving Shot Types

  • Drive: A standard full swing shot that provides consistent distance and accuracy off the tee.
  • Power Drive: A stronger full swing shot for added distance off the tee, but with a slightly larger shot dispersion.
  • Stinger: A low and forceful shot that stays below the wind and generates lots of roll, perfect for windy conditions and firm courses.

Approach Shot Types

  • Approach: A regular full swing shot offering reliable distance and precision from the course.
  • Power Approach: A more forceful full swing shot that gains extra yardage from the course, but with a marginally increased shot spread.
  • Punch: A low-power shot that remains below the wind and generates lots of roll, mainly used to escape trees and return to the playable area.
  • Knock Down: A full swing shot that flies lower than a regular approach but high enough to land softly and stop, utilized to minimize wind impact or prevent excessive ball spin on softer courses.
  • Finesse: A shorter, adaptable shot for a broader range of distances, employed when at a distance between clubs on a standard approach or when too close to the green for an approach but too far for short game shots.
  • Hack: A forceful full swing shot used from the first cut, second cut, or heavy rough, with less power penalty than other shot types, valuable on courses with dense and punishing longer cuts.

Short Game Shot Types

  • Pitch: A standard half swing shot designed to land the ball on the green with a usual amount of roll-out, suitable for use anywhere around the green except for Bunkers.
  • Runner: A low-flying half swing shot that can be employed anywhere around the green, with the exception of Bunkers.
  • Spinner: A half swing shot with a faster speed, producing more spin on the ball and causing it to check up instead of rolling out, applicable in the Fairway, Fringe, and First Cut.
  • Flop: A lengthy swing that tosses the ball high and softly places it on the green, applicable anywhere around the green except for Bunkers.
  • Long Flop: A variation of the flop that covers a greater distance, with an increased shot dispersion, suitable for use anywhere around the green excluding Bunkers.
  • High Flop: A version of the flop that soars extremely high, landing and stopping on a dime, usable anywhere around the green except for Bunkers and Heavy Rough.
  • Blast: A shot specifically intended for Bunker play, striking the sand behind the ball to lift it out of the Bunker and onto the green.
  • Pick: A different approach to Bunker shots, this cleaner strike connects with less sand and more of the ball, leading to enhanced spin and minimized rollout.

Putting Shot Types

  • Putt: A stroke using a putter that instantly sets the ball in motion, solely employed on the Green or Fringe.
  • Chip: A short, putt-like stroke with wedges and short irons that gently lifts the ball into the air for a couple yards before getting it to roll quickly, mainly used when near the green to transport the ball over a somewhat longer patch of grass and onto the shorter sections that facilitate rolling.
  • Texas Wedge: A stroke with the putter that instantly gets the ball rolling, even when not on the Green or Fringe. Determining the distance can be challenging, but mastering this shot proves extremely effective.

Enhance your golfer’s attributes by completing quests, which are various objectives and milestones you’ll encounter throughout your career. Allocating skill points to the five skill categories (power, accuracy, control, recovery, and putting) not only unlocks new shot types but also allows you to upgrade your golfer’s attributes. Each attribute affects different aspects of your golfer’s performance, so it’s essential to find a balance that complements your playstyle.

Shot shaping

Shot shaping is an advanced technique that allows you to customize your shots further. Use the shot shaping stick to apply different shapes to your shots, like aiming higher or lower, and curving the ball left or right with draw and fade. Mastering shot shaping will enable you to maneuver the ball around obstacles, take advantage of course layouts, and adapt to varying wind conditions.

Learn course management

Understanding course management is essential for success in the game. Take time to study each course, noting hazards, bunkers, and the layout of the greens. Plan your shots to avoid obstacles and set up favorable approach angles to the greens. Consider factors like wind speed and direction, elevation changes, and the firmness of the greens when selecting your shot type and club.

Master the putting game

Putting is a critical aspect of golf, and EA SPORTS PGA TOUR offers three putting shot types: putt, chip, and Texas wedge. Practice reading the greens, as slopes and undulations will affect the ball’s path. Pay attention to the putting grid lines and adjust your aim and power accordingly. Mastering the art of putting will significantly impact your overall score and success on the course.

Utilize practice mode and tutorials

EA SPORTS PGA TOUR provides various tutorials and practice modes to help you improve your skills. Spend time in practice mode to refine your swing, experiment with shot types, and work on your short game. Participate in tutorials to learn the ins and outs of the game, from basic controls to advanced techniques like shot shaping and managing difficult lies.

Participate in online events and multiplayer

Once you feel confident in your abilities, consider participating in online events and multiplayer matches. These provide an opportunity to test your skills against other players, learn from their strategies & ultimately improve your game. The game features various online events, including weekly tournaments and special challenges, which can help you earn rewards and climb the leaderboards.

EA Sports PGA Tour: How to Putt Like a Pro

Image of Ashley Anthony

EA Sports PGA Tour Road to the Masters is a golf video game that allows players to experience the thrill of professional golf and compete in prestigious tournaments such as the glorified Masters Tournament.

Mastering the art of putting is crucial to excelling in the game and achieving greatness. In fact, mastering the art of the short game is instrumental to your golf game and the difference between a birdie, par, or a high-scoring bogie.

In this article, Prima Games will provide a step-by-step guide on how to putt effectively in EA Sports PGA Tour Road to the Masters. And trust when one says… It takes a lot of experience to get it right.

EA Sports PGA Tour -Road to the Masters | video game

Understand the Basics of Putting in EA Sports PGA Tour

Putting in Road to the Masters can be straightforward, challenging, or even hard. Depending on where you’ve placed your ball on the green following a long drive, near or far to the hole, will determine the putting task ahead of you.

To understand the basics of putting, you must first understand the physics and elements that affect it. When close to the hole, it’s hard to miss, but make no mistake, golf is not your friend and will be unforgiving if you’re not precise in most moments.

To learn more about the different shot types in the game, you can read: All EA Sports PGA Tour – Road to the Masters Shot Types Listed

What Elements Affect Putting in Road to the Masters?

Many elements affect your putting and short game. In fact, everything surrounding you impacts the direction and speed of how the ball rolls towards the hole.

Here are the elements that will influence the roll of your ball:

Where You Land On the Greens

The starting point is always the most important. Where you drop your ball on the greens after an approach, punch, or drive can be the difference between an easy or hard back-end game.

Depending on the slope between the hole and you will determine what way the ball rolls. Because the greens’ landscapes are uneven, the ball never rolls true and straight. Only when you’re close to the hole does it run straight-ish.

Ea Sports PGA Tour Putting Guide

The wind never leaves but only blows them and will always influence your shot, long or short. Only a stinger defies the laws of wind. But when you putting, your ball’s roll is vulnerable to the wind.

The Distance

The further you are, the harder you must hit and the more your shot is influenced by the terrain en route to ending your round.

This is where reading the field of play and understanding nature’s function in the game is vital and must become “second nature” to you. In order to go from a young Padawan to a Master Jedi putter, you must become one with nature.

How to Read the Slope

To read the slope or the many different ways the greens can slope, you need to look at the grid and watch what directions the little blue lines are flowing and how fast they are flowing in that direction.

The faster the flow, the bigger the downslope and the more the ball will curve in that direction. If the flow is slow, the slope is not intense, and the role is not fast.

Baby Steps: Use the Putting Guide

If you’re not used to golfing and are a newbie to the game, or even a weathered player, then using the guide will help you read the pitch much easier. The guide plus the grid will help you identify the ball roll, what angle the ball will curve, and how much curve the ball will have.

Once you’ve identified the length and angle, use the keypad to turn your golfer to the side where the line curves or bends. For example, turn the golfer left if the line has a curve on the left. If the hook of the angle is on the right-hand side, turn your Pro to the right. Don’t be scared to turn your golfer. The bigger the curve, the more you need to turn.

From there, it will take your precise judgement to complete the shot. Once ready, check the power bar behind your putter, pull back the analogue stick, meet the first line of the two, and push up on the analogue stick all in one motion for a smooth swing.

The best way to master your art and get used to all of the above is by practicing like any other sportsman does to improve their talents.

Important note: To enable or disable the guide, gride, and other putting and hitting assists, you must do so in settings. You can access the settings anytime during the game and change them to suit your preference.

Practice Makes Perfect in Putting

Practice, practice, practice, and practice some more! As with any skill, practice is key to mastering putting in EA Sports PGA Tour Road to the Masters. With practice, you’ll be able to familiarize yourself more with the different courses and the slopes on the greens they each possess while improving your accuracy and consistency.

The best place to get those putts in is by doing challenges; it’s also equally rewarding. To find out all the game modes in EA Sports PGA Tour, you can read: All EA Sports PGA Tour – Road to the Masters Game Modes

EA Sports PGA Tour | Challenges Mode

While practicing, review your putting performance and analyze your strengths and weaknesses. Take note of the putts you missed and the ones you made to identify areas for improvement. Adjust your technique accordingly, keep practicing, and adjust to the course and its greens.

Putting is a crucial skill in the game that can make or break you. Once you’ve learned this essential part of the game and improved your entire short game, there’s no stopping you from winning that championship trophy.

In EA Sports PGA Tour Road to the Masters, putting requires precision and finesse, an understanding of how to read the landscape, and requires expert judgement. After you’ve mastered the putting techniques and basics, disable the guide and start putting as a real Pro without one.

Authentic ball flight … EA Sports PGA Tour 2023

EA Sports PGA Tour 2023 review – serious players have much to master in EA’s return to the virtual fairway

Electronic Arts; PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S The controls can be tough to get the hang of, but the visuals are stunning, the commentary impressive and the play itself gives you all the challenge and realism you could want

A fter an eight-year hiatus from the world of golf simulation, Electronic Arts is back on the fairway, bringing its considerable licensing power and slick sports TV presentation skills with it. Featuring 30 courses, a large roster of current professionals, and a physics model built around the official TrackMan data for authentic ball flight measurement and swing analysis, this game is exactly what you’d expect from EA Sports – comprehensive, packed with options and deadly serious about the sport.

Those hoping for an accessible knockabout are going to be quickly disappointed. The new swing mechanic, which requires you to pull down on the analogue stick to bring the club back, then forward again to unleash your shot, takes considerable time and effort to master. There’s a slight lag between your input and the onscreen swing visual, which makes timing tricky, especially when you’re not going for a full-power shot. Consequently, you spend a lot of matches over-hitting wildly, and this isn’t helped by the fact that the transition on the stick from pull-back to forward has to be precise or your golfer just pulls a practice swing. The difficulty is compounded by the fact that there’s no real tutorial mode. Instead you get a Coaching Academy section in the Challenge mode, which has lots of little mini-games based around various elements of the sport – but these don’t provide tips or feedback, so it’s all trial and a lot of error.

EA Sports PGA Tour 2023

In the main Career mode, which lets you create a player then guide them through a competitive year (hopefully ending with a shot at the Masters), you start with hopeless stats and need to earn XP points to build your skills in driving, approach play, short game and putting before you have any chance of winning cups. It’s an RPG element that feels kind of weird within this very serious simulation, and it forces you to spend hours entering lesser tournaments and trying the hundreds of skill challenges to build up your XP and raise your stats. There’s a quick game mode that lets you jump into a round on any course with any player, so you do get to experience high level play from the outset – but if you want to beat Career get ready for a real golfing grind.

When you do start to get the hang of the controls, PGA Tour 2023 becomes an enjoyable and engrossing sim. The visuals are beautiful, with lusciously detailed courses, from Liberty National with its view of the Manhattan skyline to Pebble Beach where the holes edge along rugged cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. These courses don’t simply provide aesthetic contrast – they play very differently and require planning. Each hole demands that you tweak your swing, club and shot shaping depending on the shape of the fairway, the lie of the bunkers and myriad other factors. The commentary is also extremely good, with genuinely interesting and helpful observations, and excellent reactions to your play – I managed to land an incredible shot from a bunker 30ft from the flag and there was notable surprise in Rich Lerner’s voice. Together with the slick UI and swooping overhead cameras, EA has done a superb job of simulating modern sports broadcasting.

Alongside the Career, Challenge and Quick Play modes there are also various tournament options, including online matches against friends or the wider community. A range of daily, weekly and seasonal tournaments also allow you to earn XP and items for a limited period before they’re refreshed, so you’ve got lots of reasons to keep coming back. Unfortunately, the game features a loot box mechanic, rewarding in-game achievement with random packages of cosmetic goods and XP boosts. You can also earn in-game money to spend in the game’s outfit store, but those who can’t wait can buy the currency with real cash. Considering the money the Fifa series has made from micro transactions this is hardly surprising, but it sits uneasily in the more austere atmosphere of a golf sim.

This is a promising return to golf for EA Sports. It’s slow of pace, it’s tough to get into, and it’s a little staid and fuddy-duddy at times (most of the background music makes you feel like you’re on hold to a financial service call centre), but the accuracy of the ball physics, the huge range of shots and the highly tactical nature of the play gives serious players the challenge and realism they want. I wish there was a smoother on-ramp for beginners, or a much more basic arcade mode for those who want to thrash through a few holes with pals, but this is a sim after all and when it comes to sport, EA does not mess around.

From becoming a major champion to earning a grand slam title, to even winning the FedExCup and more, you’ll be able to experience what it is like to compete each week in golf’s biggest events with Career Mode.

Career Mode Journey Overview from Amateur to the Masters

You’ll start your journey by customizing your golfer’s appearance with a variety of visual customizations, equipment options, and swing styles to choose from. You can control your golfer’s swing style by selecting their swing animation, swing tempo, preferred shot shape, and ball trajectory throughout your career. You’ll also be able to customize your club head, shaft, grips, and more so you’ll perform just like you want to on the course. And to make sure you’re looking your best when you’re on the course, you’ll be able to equip yourself with accessories and clothing from a variety of iconic and new-age golf brands.

After you’ve perfected your look on-course, you’ll be able to control where you want to start your career - as an amateur in one of the top amateur events, on the Korn Ferry Tour, or the PGA TOUR. As an amateur you’ll be able to play in the U.S. Amateur Championship, Augusta National Women’s Amateur, The Amateur Championship, Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, and Latin American Amateur Championship, culminating in Q-school where you’ll compete for a spot on the Korn Ferry Tour. After you’ve conquered the amateur championships  you’ll have the opportunity to earn an invitation to the Masters and U.S. Open.

After the Korn Ferry Tour, or if you choose to skip straight to it, you’ll launch into the PGA TOUR where you will get to compete each week on golf’s biggest stages including the major championships, where you can chase  your green jacket, a Grand Slam Title, race for the FedExCup, and more.

Throughout the season, each tournament has field sizes and entry requirements and that mirror its real life counterpart. So if you want to compete in golf’s biggest events, you’ll need to earn your spot just like the pros do.

During Career Mode gameplay, you can use the “AI Pairings” setting to play shot-for-shot against an AI PGA TOUR pro, or turn it off to speed up the round and concentrate solely on your game.

The AI performance is based on official ShotLink data, so pros play each course and particular hole just like they would in real life.

Skill Progression and Shot Types

EA SPORTS PGA TOUR Career Mode uses an RPG style of progression where you’ll be able to build your golfer’s skill set over time as you put in playing hours. You can earn XP and skill points in the categories of power, driving, approach, short game and putting where you’ll be able to unlock new shot types and upgrade them from bronze to silver to gold and more.

With upgraded shot types you’ll have more strategic options on the course so you can succeed at more difficult courses.

You’ll be able to see your upgrades in your home base, The Season Hub where you’ll be able to view the entire calendar of events and track your career progression and other milestones through the “Career Mastery” tab.

In your Season Hub you’ll also be able to see your completed and available quests - sets of challenges categorized under either a course or a tournament. Completed quests will contribute to developing your skills and unlocking new shot types.

By completing different challenges you’ll also be able to earn ball and club specs which offer customizable performance characteristics across the areas of power, accuracy, control, and recovery. You can create a loadout that you prefer and then equip that club and ball spec into your bag.

You can also purchase PGA TOUR club specs from the store to equip clubs just like your favorite pros do.

Your golfer will have a variety of attributes that you’ll be able to influence by completing quests. They are detailed below. Utilizing skill points for each of the five skill categories not only unlocks new shot types, but also allows you to upgrade your golfer's attributes

  • Power influences your swing speed which determines the distance all of your shot go.
  • With higher accuracy comes a shot dispersion area and a smaller mishit window size. Your swing execution will also be more accurate.
  • With higher control attributes, your shot will have more natural spin and you’ll be able to shape your shot more as well as add more spin while your shot is in the air. The higher your control the more accurately you’ll be able to influence these parts of your play.

How to Spin the Ball in EA Sports PGA Tour

Image of Shaun Ranft

The further you progress on the course, ideally the better your pro will become. That said, you’re going to want to make sure your spending Skill Points on the necessary traits. If you’re looking to help your approach game, or even sneak a handful of extra yards off the tee, then being able to spin the ball after you strike it may come in handy. So today, we’re going to walk you through how to spin the ball in EA Sports PGA Tour.

Spinning Your Shot in EA Sports PGA Tour

Depending on which platform your playing on, spinning your shot in EA Sports PGA Tour will differ slightly. However, aside from the natural spin of the ball, players can only spin their shot while the ball is in flight.

  • PlayStation: X or L1
  • PC: Print Screen Key (to control Spin Direction)

The post-shot spin is important for a handful of scenarios. For instance, your Tee Shot on a hole with a wide fairway is the perfect reason to test out your post-shot spin. Bonus points if that fairway includes a massive downhill slope. Other situations to utilize the spin feature may include an approach shot, or any sort of chip/pitch/flop on shots surrounding the green.

Make sure to only use the swing marker as a guide, as chip and pitch shots have the tendency to run hot no matter which club you use. Even still, you can change up the type of approach by scrolling to the Finesse or Runner option. Lastly, a flop shot generates the most natural spin pre-shot, so make sure to use it in situations that call for backspin.

Where to Use Your Skill Points

Another thing to keep in mind is that your post-shot spin will vary. We’ll get to that momentarily, though. Just make sure you’re not attempting to spin your shot until after you’ve completed your swing. While you can power boost your shot before making contact, you don’t want to risk a mishit while in the middle of your backswing.

Spin EA Sports PGA Tour

Skill Points can be put into four different categories. And, you have complete control when it comes to building a pro of your liking. But if you’re looking to improve your post-shot spin, then Control is the trait you want to focus on. Whether it’s Driving, Approach, Short Game, or Putting, Control is important all the same.

That’s everything you need to know about how to spin the ball in EA Sports PGA Tour. If you’re looking for more in-game tips or information, though, you’ve come to the right place. Keep it right here on Twinfinite by checking out everything at the links below.

EA Sports PGA Tour Review - Hit The Links

EA returns to the world of golf with a challenging and rewarding title that's let down by a couple of inconsistencies and an underwhelming swing mechanic.

By Richard Wakeling on April 12, 2023 at 10:55AM PDT

EA Sports PGA Tour is unlike any other golf game I've played. It still features familiar elements from the series' past--back when Tiger Woods was front and center--such as slow-motion heartbeat moments and climactic power shots. But after an eight-year hiatus from the world of golf simulation, EA has returned to the fairway with a more demanding recreation of the sport that's as much about feel as it is mastering the game's robust mechanics. With 30 courses covering all four majors--including The Masters at Augusta National--EA Sports PGA Tour has a plethora of golfing action to sink your teeth into. It's just a shame there are a few notable issues in critical areas that hold it back from greatness.

The first of these is the game's swing mechanic. If you've played a golf game before, the actual act of swinging a driver or 5-iron will be familiar. You pull down on the analog stick to bring the club back, then push forward again to unleash your shot. This has been a staple in golf games for a number of years now, and there aren't any alternatives at the moment--not until a three-click system is implemented in a later update. The issue with EA Sports PGA Tour is that there's a slight delay between your input and the on-screen visual. Your swing isn't 1:1, so there's an uneasy disconnect where you never quite feel like you're in total control. The general malaise of each swing doesn't help matters either, with the slow, clunky pacing and frustrating lag making it difficult to nail the timing and power of each shot. I eventually grew accustomed to these idiosyncrasies over time, but it never feels quite right and fails to capture the satisfaction that hitting a 300-yard tee shot should achieve.

To compound the issue, EA Sports PGA Tour also lacks any sort of meaningful tutorial. There are tooltips that pop up and cover the basics the first time you play, but these brief snippets barely scratch the surface of everything going on under the hood. Instead, the game has a suite of challenges that happen to include a Coaching Academy. This is the best place to start, even if these challenges still neglect to offer any tips or feedback to help you along the way. What you get is a variety of contextual situations covering different aspects of the sport, from putting downhill to dealing with elevation changes and the multitude of shot types on offer. There's a lot of trial and error involved, but the repetition of replaying each situation does give you a greater understanding of how everything works. It's not a very user-friendly approach, but it sets expectations and is genuinely helpful in an unconventional way, even if it might prove frustrating for some. Plus, completing these challenges also earns you XP that can be used to improve your created character.

EA Sports PGA Tour

EA Sports PGA Tour's career mode sits front and center, starting off with your no-name golfer competing in the qualifying school before moving on to the amateur Korn Ferry Tour. The ultimate goal is to reach the PGA Tour, which can be done either by winning one of the many four-round courses or by placing highly enough in the Korn Ferry rankings come season's end. You can expedite this process by opting for a quick play mode where you only need to play a few holes rather than an entire round, but I think playing full rounds is the way to go. That's mostly because it gives you ample time to fine-tune your skills, learn the courses, and gain a better understanding of the game's mechanics. There's also a palpable sense of progression that comes from leveling up your golfer. Earning XP lets you build your skills in driving, approach play, short game, and putting, while progressing each attribute also unlocks more shot types, giving you additional options when preparing to send the ball careening toward the green.

Fortunately, the Coaching Academy includes challenges for each of the game's myriad shot types, giving you the opportunity to see how each one functions before playing competitively. There's value in understanding the differences between a runner, spinner, or knock-down shot, but knowing when to utilize each one essentially comes down to a matter of feel. In this respect, EA Sports PGA Tour resembles the sport of golf more accurately than any other game. There are a number of variables at play for every single shot, to the point where there's a real thought process behind each swing. You have to choose the right shot type and club for each situation, adjust for wind and elevation, judge how much power you need to put into the swing, and account for the distinct ways each course plays--tweaking your shot shape depending on the shape of the fairway and lie of the bunkers. The game helps to some degree by displaying relevant information such as wind speed and distance, but then you're left to your own devices. This can be frustrating, particularly early on when you're still learning the ropes and your golfer's attributes aren't up to snuff, but once everything clicks, EA Sports PGA Tour plays an engrossing game of golf that can be incredibly rewarding.

Much of this is down to the courses themselves. Every single one of the 30 officially licensed courses is staggeringly beautiful and offers an authentic attention to detail, whether it's Liberty National and its view of the Manhattan skyline, the waves crashing against the sand at Pebble Beach, or the alligators lurking in the water at TPC Sawgrass. Almost every course is iconic on some level, and they've all been faithfully rendered and recreated, right down to individual blades of grass. The absence of a course designer is a tad disappointing, but unlike PGA Tour 2K23, it's not something that feels like a necessity because there are already so many 18-hole delights. The courses are the game's main character, providing the kind of variety and depth to stave off any tedium. Mastering a golf game's mechanics is usually the key to success, but EA Sports PGA Tour's courses demand much more from you. Each one plays differently, whether it's the roll of the green or the width of the fairway impacting your decision-making. It genuinely feels like you're playing against the course rather than the shot meter.

EA Sports PGA Tour

The physics model, which is built around the official TrackMan data for ball tracking and swing analysis, is excellent for the most part. However, there are some inconsistencies when it comes to ball rollout. On The Old Course at St Andrews, for instance, the rollout is overly extreme to the point where the ball will roll uphill at pace, even through heavy rough. This forces you to account for situations that shouldn't really occur. Once you land on the green, putting is also equally aggravating for different reasons. Each green contains a grid that uses moving beads to show you the direction of the break. The problem is that sometimes this data is inaccurate and the break is opposite to what the beads are showing. The putt reader alleviates this somewhat by showing the ideal path to the hole, but this is also misleading at times. With no reliable way to gauge the breaks, putting is a lesson in irritation that will only be rectified if these issues are fixed in future updates.

Outside of career mode, EA Sports PGA Tour also features various tournament options for use in online matches against the community. If you want to play against friends, however, stroke play is the only option, and there's a disappointing lack of alternating play for those who want to see each other tee off. A range of daily, weekly, and seasonal tournaments give you another chance to earn XP and items like club specs and in-game cash for a limited time before they're refreshed, so there's an incentive to keep coming back. That in-game cash can be spent in a store of rotating items including various cosmetics, which holds some appeal because the character creator is extremely barebones. Outfitting your golfer in branded clothing can be fairly costly, though, which is explained by the inclusion of microtransactions for those who would rather buy the in-game currency with real money. This isn't a surprising move, but it doesn't exactly vibe with the serene mood.

After almost a decade away from the sport, EA's return to the golf course is a promising one. The range of shot types, courses, and tangible variables make for a methodical and tactical game of golf that's both challenging and rewarding. It stumbles by barely introducing players to its robust mechanics, while a laggy swing and inconsistent putting are notable flaws on what is otherwise a fantastic golf sim. EA Sports PGA Tour represents a solid re-entry for the series and lays down a sturdy foundation for an auspicious future.

  • Leave Blank
  • Each shot must be carefully considered, taking into account a number of variables
  • All 30 courses are wonderfully recreated and each one feels distinct
  • Offers a tough but satisfying simulation of golf that's close to the real thing
  • The lack of tutorials makes for a rocky start
  • Swing mechanics are delayed and create a disconnect
  • Putting information is frequently misleading

EA Sports PGA Tour 2023: How to Unlock Skills and Shot Types Guide

Improve your golfer’s performance by getting new abilities!

Andrés

You can improve your custom character in EA Sports PGA Tour 2023 , and you definitely need to do so to complete some of the harder challenges in the game.

In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about unlocking new skills and shot types for your golfer!

How to Unlock Skills and Shot Types in EA Sports PGA Tour 2023

pga tour ea tips

To get skills and shot types, you first need to level up your golfer. There are a total of 50 levels, with your character starting at level 1.

You get experience naturally by playing the game at all using your custom golfer, though quests and challenges give the highest amount of experience.

Every level up will give you a different amount of Skill Points which you can use in the Skills tab of the Golfer menu. Just choose the category and skill you wish to learn and confirm the Skill Point cost.

pga tour ea tips

You can also unlearn skills by retraining your golfer. However, this has a heavy coin cost, so you should only do it after you’ve reached level 50!

There are 5 different categories for you to use your SP in which are as follows:

  • Power – Increases your swing speed, making every shot type reach longer distances.
  • Driving – Divided into Accuracy and Control. Makes you less likely to mishit and lowers the shot dispersion of Driving Shot Types.
  • Approach – Divided into Accuracy, Control, and Recovery. Gives you better control over Approach Shot Types, making them more accurate and reliable.
  • Short Game – Divided into Accuracy, Control, and Recovery. Improves your overall handling when using Short Game Shot Types.
  • Putting – Last but not least, this will give you better accuracy and control over Putting Shot Types.

As you can see, nearly all these stats primarily relate to their respective shot types. But what are the various shot types and how do you get them? Let’s go over them next.

How to Unlock and Upgrade Shot Types

pga tour ea tips

You will unlock Shot Types by leveling up your skills . Notice how some skill slots have a shield-shaped badge? These skill nodes will unlock Shot Types.

Hover your cursor over any of these skills and a small pop-up will appear telling you which Shot Types the skill will unlock. It will also tell you if there are any extra requirements, such as another skill.

Meet the requirements listed and the Shot Type will be unlocked!

pga tour ea tips

You can upgrade every shot type as well. Each type has three ranks: Bronze, Silver, and Gold.

Upgrading works the same as unlocking them. You just need to upgrade your skills further; the Shot Type pop-ups will tell you what stats you need for each upgrade.

Keep in mind that you don’t need to equip the shot types or anything like that . Just having them will let you use them.

Highsmith leads PGA Puerto Rico Open

pga tour ea tips

American Joe Highsmith was clinging to a one-stroke lead when darkness halted the second round of the US PGA Tour Puerto Rico Open on Friday.

Highsmith teed off on the 10th at Grande Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande and after two birdies in his first eight holes eagled the par-five 18th.

He bounced back from a bogey at the first with three birdies in his next four holes and was at 13-under par through 15 holes when play was halted.

That put him one in front of half a dozen players who had made it into the clubhouse on 12-under, a group featuring Germany's Matti Schmid, Americans Kevin Streelman, Brice Garnett and Erik Barnes, Puerto Rico's Rafael Campos and Japan's Rio Hisatsune.

Schmid carded a seven-under-par 65, Garnett and Barnes both shot 66 and Streelman, Campos and Hisatsune all posted 67s.

Highsmith, a 23-year-old chasing a first tour title, had shared the overnight lead with Scott Piercy, managing to get in the clubhouse on seven under on Thursday before thunderstorms halted play for two hours.

The tournament is still playing catch-up, with round two due to resume on Saturday morning with round three to follow.

The tournament is played opposite this week's Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, one of the PGA Tour's signature events designed to showcase the game's top talent.

Is EA PGA Tour worth it?

Nevertheless, it is a decent golf game that will entertain fans of the sport. As golf games go, this is the most fun I have had in a while. It’s a massive improvement over recent years’ titles. The career mode is both addictive and rewarding, it’s full of contact and the presentation is both cinematic and beautiful.

Is PGA 2K23 or EA Sports PGA Tour better?

2K23 isn’t terrible, but EA is a clear winner. 3: EA’s Career mode is head and shoulders better than 2K23. They have the courses and it feels like a real PGA Tour. 2K feels like a “fake” tour with mostly fake courses.

What golf game is better 2K or EA?

If you’re after more challenging and rewarding gameplay, you’ll probably want to opt for the 2K game. 2K’s course creator allows for its game to have an unlimited number of layouts to play, but the limited number (32) of recreations simply look and feel better in the EA game.

Is Rory McIlroy in EA Sports PGA Tour?

It is an entry in the EA Sports PGA Tour franchise, and was the first series since 1999 not to feature Tiger Woods as its namesake, replacing him with Rory McIlroy.

What is the difficulty on the EA Sports PGA Tour?

Putting Difficulty

Choose how difficult it is to execute the selected Putting Mechanic. The options include Easy, Normal, and Hard. Easy is the most forgiving swing difficulty.

EA Sports PGA Tour Review – The Final Verdict

How many courses are in ea pga tour.

EA SPORTS PGA TOUR will have 28 real-life and 2 fantasy courses for a total of 30 beautiful golf courses at launch. And on each of these courses comes a variety of gameplay and visual features that result in 30 unique experiences to play.

Is Tiger Woods in EA Sports PGA Tour?

What about Tiger Woods? Woods is no longer with the EA Sports family after their partnership from 1999-2014. The 15-time major champion is now with the 2K franchise, and made it known to his followers where they can play as him.

Why is Rory not in EA Sports PGA?

Not in the game – yet. The Open? Not in the game – yet. The latter two major courses will be added as free DLC later but icons such as Rory, Tiger and Rham almost certainly won’t due to licensing ties with EA’s big rival – PGA Tour 2K23.

Why isn t Rory in EA Sports PGA Tour?

Missing players in EA Sports PGA Tour

If you follow the sport closely, you’ve likely noticed a few missing notables from this year’s game, including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Though EA didn’t mention why this was the case, it’s likely down to licensing issues with 2K.

Can you play Augusta on Rory McIlroy PGA Tour?

Augusta National debuted in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 (2011) and was a staple for the remaining two editions of the game. It was not featured in the 2015 reboot, Rory McIlroy PGA Tour. There will be unique presentation packages for each major, including an intro for the Open Championship narrated by Nick Faldo.

Why did EA stop making golf games?

According to EA, the split is a mutual decision. The agreement with HB Studios comes after a similar long-term licensing agreement between the PGA Tour and Electronic Arts came to an end. EA had dominated electronic golf games thanks to a partnership with 15-time major tournament winner Tiger Woods.

Is Augusta in PGA 2K23?

But what about PGA Tour 2K23? Does it feature this iconic golf course? Yes, yes it does, but in its own unique way: by being added by the community through the course designer mode, which is a feature that’s been a staple in the series since the first game back in 2014.

Is the Ryder Cup in EA SPORTS PGA TOUR?

You can now play the prestigious Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, the host of the 2023 Ryder Cup. Additionally, you have the opportunity to participate in the Ryder Cup on other iconic courses that have previously hosted the event, including Kiawah Island, Oak Hill, The Country Club, and Whistling Straits.

What tournaments are on the EA PGA Tour?

EA SPORTS PGA TOUR is the exclusive home for all four major tournaments including the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship, U.S. Open Championship, and The Open Championship.

How to play Augusta National on PGA 2K23?

If you want to tackle this iconic course in the game, then search for “Augusto National” that is designed by oneHughJaynas (yep, that’s right). From Amen Corner to Holly the 18th hole, everything looks really good and it’s fun to play.

Does EA Sports PGA Tour have career mode?

Skill Progression and Shot Types

EA SPORTS PGA TOUR Career Mode uses an RPG style of progression where you’ll be able to build your golfer’s skill set over time as you put in playing hours.

Why does Rory McIlroy not like Phil Mickelson?

Golf icon Rory McIlroy has continued his long-standing feud with Phil Mickelson after the American was accused of making a controversial $400,000 (£314,000) bet on the 2012 Ryder Cup, which he denies. But it’s not the first time the pair have been embroiled in a war of words.

Are Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy friends?

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods are close friends now. They even own a business together. But back in 2010, the air between the two iconic golfers was ice cold. Build-up to the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor was dominated by talk about Woods.

What did Phil Mickelson say about Rory?

Mickelson, a native Californian who turns 53 in two weeks, tweeted this reply: “As worn out as McIlroy was after the Masters and his need for an off-season, LIV would be perfect for him. Problem is, I don’t think there’s a team that wants him on it because they’d have to deal with all his BS.”

What pros are in EA golf?

PGA TOUR Pros

  • Scottie Scheffler.
  • Tony Finau.
  • Jordan Spieth.
  • Hideki Matsuyama.
  • Xander Schauffele.
  • Patrick Cantlay.
  • Sungjae Im.

Who did Rory McIlroy fall out with?

New footage has emerged of Rory McIlroy’s argument with Patrick Cantlay’s caddie on the 18th green as Joe LaCava appeared to anger McIlroy by celebrating too closely to him while he was lining up a putt.

Is Rory McIlroy TaylorMade?

The extension McIlroy signed last year with TaylorMade featured similar language regarding his club and ball requirements. McIlroy remains a TaylorMade staffer — and arguably its most important — for 2023, but the language surrounding his club requirements has changed.

Why did Tiger Woods leave EA Sports?

Although EA officials publicly said Woods’ extramarital affairs and the fallout didn’t hurt his status, the company chose to have him share the cover in recent years with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Arnold Palmer. It has been a rough couple of months for Electronic Arts.

Does Tiger Woods play Nike clubs?

Tiger Woods first signed a professional deal in 1996 but at that time Nike were only making golf shoes and clothing. He first put a Nike golf ball, the Tour Accuracy TW golf ball, into play in 2000. Woods played Titleist golf clubs but gradually started switching to Nike.

Coalition establishes guardrails for how sports betting should be marketed to consumers; TOUR also renews role with NCPG’s Leadership Circle

Change Text Size

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The PGA TOUR announced Tuesday its latest initiatives to elevate sports betting responsibility, as the league has joined the Coalition for Responsible Sports Betting Advertising while also renewing its position within the Leadership Circle of the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG).

Established by the NFL and FOX in 2023, the Coalition for Responsible Sports Betting Advertising is a voluntary association of sports leagues and media entities committed to doing their part to help ensure a responsible approach to sports betting advertising. By extending its relationship with the NCPG, the TOUR joins several other leading sports organizations in helping NCPG further ensure the viability of its overall operations, sustainability, future growth and innovation.

“With the proliferation of sports betting in the United States, the PGA TOUR remains committed to establishing a safe and healthy marketplace for consumers,” said Scott Warfield, PGA TOUR vice president, Gaming. “The TOUR is proud to stand alongside its fellow sports leagues and network partners on the coalition, as well as with our colleagues at NCPG, in our continued mission to educate fans on the merits of gambling responsibly and the resources available to address problem gambling issues.”

Consisting of the PGA TOUR, NFL, MLB, MLS, NASCAR, NBA, WNBA, NHL, NBC Sports and FOX, the coalition has committed to implement and maintain consumer protection policies consistent with the following six principles:

Sports betting should be marketed only to adults of legal betting age; sports betting advertising should not promote irresponsible or excessive gambling or degrade the consumer experience; sports betting advertisements should not be misleading; sports betting advertisements should be in good taste; publishers should have appropriate internal reviews of sports betting advertising; and publishers should review consumer complaints pertaining to sports betting advertising.

“As the legalization of sports betting spreads nationwide, we feel it is critical to establish guardrails around how sports betting should be advertised to consumers across the United States,” the Coalition said in a joint statement. “Each member of the coalition feels a responsibility to ensure sports betting advertising is not only targeted to an appropriate audience but also that the message is thoughtfully crafted and carefully delivered.”

In renewing its Leadership Circle position within NCPG, the PGA TOUR will continue to support the national advocate that seeks to minimize the economic and social costs associated with gambling addiction. The TOUR will once again roll out a cross-platform marketing campaign in support of the NCPG’s Problem Gambling Awareness Month in March, an initiative that brings elevated messaging around problem gambling education and resources throughout the month.

“The PGA TOUR’s continuous investment in responsible gambling and problem gambling education initiatives exemplifies its leadership in navigating the evolving landscape of legalized sports betting with integrity and responsibility,” said Keith Whyte, executive director of the National Council on Problem Gambling.

These partnerships are the latest in a string of progressive and industry-leading sports betting initiatives by the PGA TOUR. Following the Supreme Court’s decision that overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018, the TOUR instituted a robust integrity program that includes monitoring for suspicious activity within global golf betting markets, monitoring betting activity of covered persons under its integrity policy, as well as significant investments in responsible gambling and problem gambling education initiatives.

How to watch the Arnold Palmer Invitational 2024 online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the tournament locally, you may need a different way to watch -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the tournament. So if your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, nonblackout area. Most VPNs, like our Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Quick tips for streaming the Arnold Palmer Invitational 2024 using a VPN

  • With four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
  • If you're having trouble getting the tournament after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend  Brave .
