Xochimilco, which in nahuatl means "Field of flowers", is defined by a series of water canals that existed since pre-Hispanic times when lakes and lagoons made up almost the entire Valley of Mexico and disappeared with the passing of time. Xoximilco emerges in Cancun as a tribute to the beauty and grandeur of this member of the Cultural Heritage for Humanity list; where you will be able to experience the traditions of central Mexico in a Caribbean Paradise. Under a star-filled sky and with tropical weather, on board a picturesque trajinera decorated with the elements from each state, you will travel through time in a true Mexican fiesta with live music, gastronomy and flowers.

Once we were on the boat they said you couldn’t wear/ use sunscreen. They also didn’t offer bottled water. While on the boat they advised everyone against snorkelling. They said it was an 8KM snorkelling excursion. We were not told this upon booking. We thought it was a leisurely beginner snorkelling excursion. Since most people voted against going we didn’t go. We instead just swam at the beach by the island. Which you could do without taking this trip/ paying the price. It took about 30 minutes to dock the boat. My partner and I both go a sunburn during this time. As there was little to no shade on the boat. After docking we had 90 minutes at a buffet on the island. The food was pretty bad and most drinks were an up sell. There wasn’t much to do on the island, unless you wanted to rent a golf cart. Be careful as people on the island pretend to know you from your resort to try to sell you things. Would have been nice for the tour guide to warn us about this like this. Overall I’d say this isn’t a full day excursion. It’s much better just to take the ferry. The ferry is faster. They have clean washrooms, more comfortable seating, shade and it’s more economical. We were seated at the back of the van and were generally uncomfortable. Our first stop was an art installation, which was cool, but completely unnecessary. It was just an Instagram photo op. Finally, lunch and dinner were included, but not good, and “dinner” was served at 2:30. The positives: the ruins at Tulum were beautiful and interesting. The Casa Tortuga cenotes were amazing. Your guide helped you through each cenote, there were lifeguards and paramedics on site. You can jump off a high platform into the two open cenotes, which my family loved. All of them came out really nice! He was very patient with making sure we were fully ready to get back on the bus for the next adventure and offered to allow us to charge our phones. I love that we stopped at Playa Paraiso because although I stayed in Tulum, I wouldn't have visited on my own. My only critic is that there are nicer and closer Cenotes to Tulum we couldn't went. But since, you have to drive down to Tulum from Coba (where the Cenotes were) to go back up to Cancun, it all worked out. I met amazing people and I definitely had fun! The breakfast lunchbox was a nice added touch that is not often included in tours! The itinerary was well built, it definitely made me want to return to Laguna Kaan Loom in the future! No fins for the swim which was them dropping you off and you swimming back to the boat. Only do it if your a really strong swimmer. The stops were fine, Isla Mujeres seems to just be a tourist trap, unless you had time to actually get to some ruins. Which you don’t on this excursion. The staff made the day! What is it like to go to Xoximilco?

Xoximilco is a park designed after the original Xochimilco in Mexico City. Xochimilco is part of the ancient area of Mexico City where there are canals. This area became a park like area where families and friends rent out boasts called trajinera and enjoy time going down the canals. They would pass other boats where there would be musicians and you could pay to hear a song. Other boats would offer drinks or food to passerbys.

This is the concept of  Xoximilco park by Xcaret . You will be treated to dinner and a lot of fun mixed with live music. If you have read our other articles about Xcaret’s properties, you will know that they do a good job in designing parks and creating an enjoyable tour experience. Here is what this tour is like to see if this is something you want to do while in the Riviera Maya.

What to expect for your visit to Xoximilco

When you arrive at Xoximilco you arrive at what looks like a Mexican street party. You can have some traditional corn snacks, take photos and go to the bathroom (there is also bug spray available here if you want some). Then you will go to check in for your “ dinner cruise “. They will ask what language you want your tour in and assign you to a boat.

Tip : Make sure you arrive by 7:30pm. This will allow time for check in and time to get on the boat for the 8:00pm departure. There is only one tour each night.

After check-in at Xoximilco

After passing through the gift shop you will find the colorful boats waiting. Here you can take photos and meet your guide. On each boat there is a guide and person on the back that will steer and use a pole to move the boat through the canal like a gondola. Your guide will explain the snacks on the table and what drink options there are.

Once you take off  your guide will host you in games and conversation so you get to know all your fellow passengers. There will also be stops along the way for food like quesadillas and then other boats will have live musicians. This musicians will play and you can dance and enjoy yourself while drinking on the boat.

Food on the cruise

Here is what is included in your food for the tour:

• snacks when you arrive on the boat which include Mexican salsas and dips.
• a stop for traditional quesadillas with Oaxaca cheese.
• a dinner tray of Mexican specialties.
• dessert that is 9 samples of Mexican candies and sweets.

Note : You can mention your food preferences when checking in. This would include vegetarian and any allergies you might have like seafood.

Note : If you need to go to the bathroom, there are possible emergency stops along the way.

Halfway point of your Xoximilco experience

After you pass though the canals and see some of the musicians and buildings along the way, you will have time to stop at a pier where you will get off and enjoy music under the stars and have a bathroom break. During this time they will clean the boat and restock the bar. Once you get back on you dessert tray is waiting. This will be a sampling of 9 traditional Mexican candies and sweets.

Your cruise will continue until toward the end where many of the boats will gather around live musicians and it culminates into a fun Mexican night dancing on a boat in the canals of Xoximilco.

How to get to Xoximilco

Xoximilco is located in the Riviera Maya between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen . Xoximilco is closer to Cancun and actually just south of the Cancun Airport  along the 307 Highway.

Getting to Xoximilco by transportation

Since this tour experience involves drinking and having fun, you might enjoy yourself not having to worry about driving. There are two options you can take to Xoximilco.

You are able to add transportation to your tickets when you purchase them. This will be van or busses from Xoximilco. The transport cost $27.00 USD.

You can also easily take a taxi to Xoximilco from Cancun or any point in the Riviera Maya. Below is a taxi rate board that is located at Xoximilco.

Driving to Xoximilco tips

From cancun to xoximilco.

If you are coming from Cancun it is fairly easy to find. Just drive south on the 307 highway. Xoximilco will be on your right about 5km after the Cancun Airport turn. There is a large lighted sign above the driveway “ Xoximilco “.

From Playa Del Carmen to Xoximilco

It is good to note that when you go north on the 307 Highway, this highway is divided. There is a new turn in the center of the highway that allows you to turn into the park directly now.

Entrance and parking at Xoximilco

When you arrive at Xoximilco at the main gate, you will be greeted and asked if you have a reservation. Then you will proceed into the park.  You will pass on a small gravel drive and over some small bridges. When you are close to the entrance, you will be greeted by the parking lot attendants and they will valet your car free of charge. This is so you don’t have to walk back to the entrance and they can also fit all the cars into a small lot.

Our recommendations for the Xoximilco experience

This truly is a unique experience you can have in Mexico. It relives one of the great traditions of the original Xochimilco in Mexico City. This is a good tour activity if you are with a couple or in a group. Going here alone would not really be the same experience. Come here with fun in mind and certainly partaking in tequila or other drinks is part of the fun. If Mariachi and Mexican bands are not your thing, you might not get as much out of this overall experience.

This can make for a fun date night or special occasion. It certainly will be memorable for a birthday or anniversary.

Make sure you mention your language preference to what boat you will be on. It will be much better and enjoyable if you have the tour and be able to understand all the details.

We were not sure what to expect when we booked this tour. It turned out to be a lot of fun! The time on the boat drinking was the highlight of our Mexican vacation.

Thanks for your review and video here. We have been on the fence about visiting because we did not know what it was really like. Now we think it will be a fun night out.

How far is it from Playa del Carmen?

It takes about 38 minutes to drive there. We do like booking transportation with it or having a designated driver since drinking is part of the experience.

Just want to know how kids friendly is it?

Kids can have an ok time since it is very interesting but it is more for adults. Depending on the boat you are on, people are drinking and having a good time. It is not totally drunk people but adults out for dinner. We have seen some children go on these tours but a majority are adults.

Our night was overshadowed by our driver from the beginning. After reading reviews and the confirmation. We were never told a hard pick up time and we ended up needing to pay an additional $135 usd for a taxi after paying over $300 for Xcaret to pick us up. Over half of our party was at the shuttle around the estimated pick up time, but Diego refused to let us into the shuttle because we were not all there by the estimated pick up time. We had a large group consisting of 3 hotel rooms and Diego was not willing to give us any wiggle room knowing that we were on the phone with other family members that were running to the pick up location. Even letting half of us onto the shuttle would’ve saving us a lot of additional money. He said there were other pickups (we found out later it was one other hotel next to ours). After spending an additional $135 usd for a private taxi, we entered Xcaret to find Diego as our host for the night on the boat (wouldn’t you think he wanted to be tipped and help us previously?) he arrived before us, obviously having plenty of time to make it there, and we spent the whole night on the tour going around each location drinking and dancing, but also feeling the awkward tension. We took the bus back to our hotel at the ended with Diego expecting us to tip him, but I couldn’t feel well rewarding him for creating a hostile environment and the stress he put on our family. The excursion as a whole was fun and we had some great people on our boat, but the tension was definitely there. I would do the excursion and buy your own transportation 100%. Maybe request another server instead of Diego. He needs to learn some hospitality and Xcaret needs to make their pickup times final times instead of the reviews stating they were 45 minutes late
