the Caminito del Rey environment

It is in this environment where, since the 19th and 20th centuries, a set of railway and hydroelectric infrastructures were located that formed the backbone of the connections and the road network that we have inherited in the 21st century..

Declared by the Junta de Andalucía as a Natural Area in 1989, it had already been classified as a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) in 1987 and, since 2006, it is part of the Andalusia-Morocco Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean. and from the list of Places of Community Importance of the Mediterranean Biogeographic Region.

This natural enclave has been a focus of influence for the settlement and development of human groups in the surroundings of the natural area of Gaitanejo and El Chorro from prehistoric times to the present day, documented by the abundance of archaeological sites.

To achieve this objective, it is necessary to guarantee its cataloging and conservation, but also its dissemination as the good of all. And that is why any candidacy to be World Heritage needs not only the conviction of the people and institutions that present it but also that of the target audience..

Candidacy a UNESCO World Heritage

Based on seven landmarks that, in an environment of less than 20 kilometers, are part of our history and that we are sure will make you fall in love: The Natural Park of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, the El Chorro / Conde de Guadalhorce and Gaitanejo Dams, the footbridges of the El Chorro hydroelectric waterfall, the El Chorro railway station and bridges over the Gaitanes, as well as the Paleolithic Cave of Ardales, the prehistoric Necropolis of Las Aguilillas and the Mozarabic cave church of Bobastro. DESFILADERO DE LOS GAITANES NATURAL PARK , HIKES , MALAGA

El caminito del rey malaga: all you need to know to walk spain’s most popular hike.

Sharing is caring!

Once known as the most dangerous hike in the world, El Caminito del Rey in Malaga was reopened in 2015 with a new, safe walkway pinned along the 100-meter tall vertical cliffside.

It’s now accessible for anyone that can handle vertigo that follows along the jaw-dropping path. If you plan on going on a hiking date to Caminito del Rey, make sure you ask if your date has vertigo before booking so you don’t make it a nightmare of a first date.

The breathtaking Desfiladero de Los Gaitanes gorge is truly worth pushing your boundaries. Since the two-hour hike is mostly flat, this is something that people of any fitness level to complete. I’ve actually listed it as one of the best beginner hikes in Andalucia here .

In this post, I’ll give you all the information you need to walk Caminito del Rey, from getting tickets, where to park, and what to consider before you go.

El caminito del Rey Spain

How to get to El Caminito del Rey

The absolute best way to get to El Caminito del Rey is by car. Still, it’s easy to get there by train, and possible to make it by bus from Malaga. Here is everything you need to know to get from Malaga to El Caminito del Rey by public transport and other destinations by car.

Train to Caminito del Rey

You can take the train to El Chorro, which is where the Caminito del Rey trail finishes. As you get off the train, there are buses leaving every 30 minutes for the El Kiosko Restaurant where you have to start the walk.

From Malaga, you can take the train from Malaga Maria Zambrano train station. Check tickets and prices with Renfe here .

Alternatively, you can take the train from Granada or Seville to Antequera-Santa Ana and change trains there to El Chorro (22 min). Coming from anywhere but Malaga, Antequera, or any stop on the Malaga-El Chorro train route, it’s highly recommended to drive a car to get there.

Bus to El Caminito del Rey

You can also get to El Caminito del Rey by bus from Alora or Malaga. From Malaga, take the bus to Alora and then change there to reach El Chorro.

You can check bus times from Malaga here . The travel time is about an hour. Check bus times from Alora to El Chorro here . The travel time is nearly half an hour.

If you can avoid it, I don’t recommend you to take the bus from Malaga as it’s more hassle than the train. However, if you’re staying in Alora and don’t have a car, it’s a good option.

Driving to Caminito del Rey

Driving to Caminito del Rey is the easiest way to get there. Though the trains are frequent, they stop on the end of the hike and you have to plan enough time to reach the control cabin in time.

When driving, on the other hand, you can get straight to the entrance by El Kiosko Restaurant and take the shuttle bus back when you are finished hiking.

You can put “El Kiosko Restaurant Ardales” into the GPS and it will easily get you there. Just make sure it’s in Ardales/El Chorro when you choose in the GPS as there are other restaurants by the same name in other places in Andalucia.

Approximate driving time to El Kiosko Restaurant from the following cities:

  • Malaga: 1 hr
  • Nerja: 1 hr 30 min
  • Ronda: 50 min
  • Granada: 1 hr 30 min
  • Cordoba: 1 hr 40 min
  • Seville: 1 hr 45 min

Want more spectacular hiking along suspension bridges but for free? Check out the lesser-known El Saltillo trail from Canillas de Aceituno in Malaga!

Parking Caminito del Rey

There is parking both in El Chorro and by El Kiosko Restaurant. As mentioned above, I do recommend parking at the latter, so that you can start walking straight to the control cabin.

If it’s full just in front of El Kiosko Restaurant, there are a few parking spots and places to park along the road (all wheels outside the road!) turning back towards El Chorro along the lakes.

The parking in El Chorro is at the left just before driving up to the train station. You’ll see it in front of you right after the turn from the bridge.

Parking in the summer months can be difficult, especially on weekends when people from all over Andalucia come to enjoy the lakes.

Bus back to the parking

There is a shuttle bus service driving the 9,5 km between El Kiosko Restaurant and El Chorro train station. It costs 1,55 Euros that you can pay cash on the bus unless you’ve bought a combined ticket.

The bus leaves every 30 minutes, so if you come by train and need to take the bus to the start of the trail, you should aim to take a train that gets to El Chorro at least 1,5-2 hours before your entrance time.

If you come by car, I recommend that you park by El Kiosko and take the bus back. This way you don’t have to stress.

Buses tend to fill up from El Chorro, not only with people from the train starting the route but also with those who have finished the route and are heading back for their car.

If you don’t get space on the bus, you have to wait another 30 minutes for the next one.

How to reach the control cabin from El Kiosko Restaurant

From El Kiosko Restaurant you can choose between two different routes to get to the control cabin. One takes 50 minutes and the other takes 20 minutes. You need to be at the control cabin at least 15-30 minutes before your entrance time.

You have to show your printed ticket and they will give you a helmet which is mandatory to wear. They will also give you a safety brief in English or in Spanish.

The control cabin at the trailhead of Caminito del Rey

The 50-minute walk starts from El Kiosko Restaurant and under the wide tunnel on the right side of the restaurant (the side where the toilets are.) After walking through the tunnel keep right and follow the path until you reach the control cabin. There will be signs to El Caminito del Rey.

El Kiosko Restaurant

The 20-minute walk starts from a smaller tunnel 200 meters from El Kiosko Restaurant. Walk down on the left side of the road direction El Chorro (with El Kiosko on your left behind you and the lake on your right) until you see the tunnel on your left. This tunnel is signposted El Caminito del Rey. Once you’ve walked through the tunnel, turn right and follow that path until you get to the control cabin.

When is the best time to hike El Caminito del Rey

You can easily hike El Caminito del Rey all year round, but if you can avoid the hottest months of July to mid-September, I recommend moving your dates. Though large parts of the trail are in the shade, it can be scorching hot, and there are no places to go for a swim during the walk.

The rest of the year has great temperatures for walking, you just need to dress accordingly. Early winter mornings especially, can get frosty.

The end of Caminito del Rey boardwalk coming out from the gorge

What to bring

When you hike El Caminito del Rey you’re not allowed big backpacks, so a small day pack will do with water and layers of clothes if you go in the colder seasons.

Note that selfie sticks are NOT allowed on Caminito del Rey, neither are hiking poles.

The walk is only a couple of hours and there are only places to stop to have a snack once you pass the first boardwalk. If you go in the warmer months, you can combine your hike with a swim at the lakes afterward, where you can have a picnic.

As an alternative, it’s a good option to either eat at El Kiosko Restaurant or at any restaurant or bar in El Chorro, where the trail ends.

Remember to bring cash for your bus ticket, 1,55 Euros.

Where to stay when hiking El Caminito del Rey

When hiking El Caminito del Rey, it’s absolutely best to stay in El Chorro or Ardales. There is a campground right at the lakes too which is fairly close to El Kiosko Restaurant.

But if you’re staying farther away, Malaga is the best option for anyone that doesn’t have access to a car. Here are a few options for accommodation.

Where to stay in El Chorro

Complejo Turístico La Garganta

Complejo Turístico La Garganta is a good hotel to stay in El Chorro with outdoor pool and it’s pet-friendly too in case you plan on doing more hikes in El Chorro with your furry friend.

The hotel has free parking but also airport shuttle if you don’t drive, which saves you the hassle of getting there.

Where to stay in Ardales

Apartamentos Parque Ardales

Apartamentos Parque Ardales has both apartments and a campground for tents and caravans. It’s situated right by El Chorro Lakes and only a few minute’s drive from El Kiosko Restaurant/the start of the trail to the control cabin. You can also walk there in about 20 minutes so you don’t have to worry about parking.

Hostal Restaurante El Cruce

This is a nice apartment hotel in Ardales with parking and it’s only a 15 minute drive to El Kiosko Restaurant. They do offer airport shuttle too, so if you don’t drive, you have the option to get the bus to El Caminito del Rey. Walking El Kiosko Restaurant would be around 1 hr 45 min.

Where to stay in Malaga

Eurostars Astoria

This wonderful hotel is situated only 500 meters from Malaga Maria Zambrano train station so it’s perfect if you don’t drive. Yet, in case you do, they have parking too. It’s centrally in Malaga city close to all the top attractions.

Hiking El Caminito del Rey

Hiking El Caminito del Rey is one of the best things to do in Andalucia and a true Spain bucket-list hike . Walking the trail is not challenging unless you have vertigo – though that will be for different reasons, as it’s mostly flat.

Before you start the hike, you’ll get your helmet and you’ll be instructed about safety guidelines along the hike.

Starting at the control cabin, you’ll first walk down by the old hydroelectric plant before you get onto the first boardwalk section hanging onto the wall of the narrow gorge. Clear, glittering water below you and floating vultures above you.

Smaller packs of birds playing inside the gorge throwing themselves down head first, before they rise high and settle on a shelf on the opposite gorge wall.

The walk takes you through a short tunnel just to continue along the gorge wall on the other side. Eventually, the gorge opens up wider and you’ll get onto a forest trail for a while before reaching the second boardwalk.

Hanging high, you can see the original path under the one you’re walking on. Realizing the state of that should make you feel pretty safe. Towards the end, where you see the famous bridge, there’s a great section where you really get a peek of how the old path looked like as you have the wall in front of you.

Take a look at the other side of the gorge, there are windows showing the train line inside the mountain and maybe you’re lucky to catch the train as it drives through.

That wall is also popular among rock climbers and if you look carefully you might just spot one or two people hanging on the wall.

Just before the bridge, there is a glass balcony viewpoint and you can also see a huge fossil on the wall. The bridge is guarded to assure not too many people cross at the same time. Most visitors stop there and take a picture anyway, so there’s usually a queue.

After the bridge, there’s a short boardwalk left before getting onto solid ground for the last 10 minutes to the control center where you leave your helmet. Continue straight from here another 10-15 minutes and you’re at El Chorro train station where the shuttle bus goes if you need to return to El Kiosko Restaurant.

Hike Caminito del Rey

Reflections on El Caminito del Rey hike

El Caminito del Rey hike is an experience that everyone should have at least once when in Andalucia. The grandeur of the gorge is incredible and it’s so narrow in places that you almost want to reach over to the other side. Despite being such a controlled hike with entrance fee and mandatory helmet, it’s absolutely worth the hassle for one of the most incredible hikes in Malaga .

However, hanging on the side of a cliff a hundred meters above the ground is not for everyone. And if your vertigo is strong, this might just not be worth it. You can’t turn around on this path, so if you go you go.

Thank you for sharing your experience and links of where to stay and go. I’m planning this one for 2025 and appreciate the info you’ve shared.

I’m glad you found it useful. I wish you a trip of a lifetime!

Hey Linn. The link to the official website seems broken, have they changed?

Hey Mikael, it sure seems like have changed! Thanks for the heads up. I have updated the post with a link that works now. Enjoy your hike!

Thanks for this really useful article. Do you think it’s OK just do do the shorter 20 minute walk to the control cabin, or is the longer 50 minute route really recommended?

To be honest, I would personally go for the short route as the beauty of the hike is after the control cabin. But if you have time to kill and don’t want to sit at the restaurant, you might as well do the long route:) Happy hiking!

Is it necessary to have a guide? Is there anything extra they provide other than a history of the hike?

Hi Rakesh, that completely depends on your preferences. Personally, I like to hike individually as I can read up on history online and I don’t like to walk in crowds. But other people prefer to get the information as they go and while they are on the site. The guide will most likely not provide more value than that. I hope this helps you make a desicion. Happy hiking!

Hi, I am scheduled to do this as part of a cruise port excursion with Silversea. My husband does not like height. Do you feel bouncing or does it seem safe and secure? I’m trying to convince him he can do this…. Thank you for the great article!

Hi Linda, there is no bouncing feeling on the boardwalk itself as this is made of solid metal and wood. However, the hanging bridge at the end of the trail will bounce. I will say it completely depends on his level of vertigo. I was pretty bad when I hiked it the first time, but managed well without any major drama. The most “scary” part for me was what is the hanging bridge and the last bit after it along the cliff wall before you get to solid ground because this is a see-through metal path (the type with small squares that you can see through, not sure how to explain lol). My vertigo has become a lot better and the last times I have gone I didn’t have any vertigo. The rest of the trail is a mix between solid ground and paths pinned to the cliff wall on different levels of altitude. I hope this helps with making a decision. It’s a breathtaking walk that is so worth it if he handles it.

Hola! I’m a Canadian who’s all set with a ticket for October 10 and really appreciate your article! This is on my bucket list for sure. I have train tickets to and from Antequera-Malaga, but it seems the Antequera- El Chorro trains aren’t running in October.? Do you know if that’s a route that just opens up late, or if there are taxi options from Antequera to the Kiosk? Just wondering and thanks again for your very clear instructions to the short route tunnel.

Hey Jan, You must be so excited about traveling to Spain! I am actually not sure about the train connection. The drive from the train station in Antequera (Santa Ana) to El Kiosko is about half an hour so you could be looking at something like 30-40 Euros in taxi (or more), but there should be taxis at the train station since it is so far from Antequera city. I wish you a lovely trip and an exciting hike!

Hi, excellent review of the hike. Thank you! I have tried to book individual tickets for when I am visiting in October but only guided tour options are left. Do you know if it is possible to purchase a guided tour tickets and walk ahead of the tour? Not looking for a tour just to enjoy the views myself along the hike

Hi Ann Marie, I’m sorry I’m probably getting back to you too late. But I’m actually not sure if you can go on an unguided hike when purchasing the guided ticket. However, I wouldn’t think there would be any problems telling your guide that you want to go solo. If you haven’t been yet, I wish you a lovely hike and if you already did it, I hope you got a good experience and that you were able to walk it by yourself.

Hi! I’m in the same situation. Any clarification if you can buy the guided tour ticket (because the non-guided tickets are sold out) and just walk ahead of the tour? We’re on a time crunch. Thanks!

Thanks for information. We are travelling in a Campervan with a dog and would love to walk this together – would you know of any dog minders or doggie day care close by (unsure if something like this exists in Spain)?

Hi, I totally feel you, it’s hard to do certain things together with a dog. There are dog hotels and day care places around, but I have never had to use one, so unfortunately I wouldn’t know. You could look into a portable aircon for the van, we will be getting one soon so that we can leave the dog in the van when we go out a couple of hours to see things together where she can’t come.

Caminito del Rey

Almost 100 metres above the bottom of the ravine where the river Guadalhorce flows, the Caminito de Rey was originally a small service path that followed along the right bank of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes . It connected the small El Gaitanejo dam with the El Chorro hydro-electric plant.

This path, built at the beginning of the 20th century for a clearly functional purpose, soon became part of everyday life for the inhabitants of Chorro . Opened in 1921 by King Alfonso XIII after the construction of the El Chorro dam, later named the Conde de Guadalhorce dam, it was used by "children going to school, women to the shop and men to the bar" sometimes on foot, sometimes on horseback and sometimes by bicycle.

The total length of the Caminito del Rey is 7.7 km, of which 4.8 are access paths and 2.9 are footbridges. With reference to the footbridges (the most famous part), the distance from the start to the end is 2.9 km including 1.5 km of actual footbridges and 1.4 km of forest track or path.

This humble Caminito del Rey runs impossibly along the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes , an impressive canyon opened by the Guadalhorce river in the limestone and dolomite, with a length of three kilometres, reaching heights of up to 300 metres and a width of less than 10 metres. Located in the centre of the province of Malaga , between the towns of Álora , Antequera and Ardales , where it is one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Malaga mountains.

Caminito del Rey Visitors’ Reception Centre

Caminito del Rey Visitors’ Reception Centre

Finally, after the inaugeration by local politicians and dignitaries in October 2022, the Caminito del Rey visitors’ reception centre has opened to the public. It is getting mixed reviews and quite a few negative comments I’ll try to explain whats going and give some solutions if you are looking for 2024 Caminito del Rey tickets.

Caminito del Rey visitor centre

The reception centre and main car park is situated at Puerto de las Atalayas on the MA 5403 road about halfway between the village of El Chorro and the start point of the Caminito del Rey . Inside you’ll find displays and information about the history of the area with great views across the lakes of Ardales.

There have been a few negative comments about the new centre.

  • The published opening hours are from 8am to 5 pm every day except Monday. However these opening hours seem to be a bit “flexible” at the very least and many people have found the centre closed during published open times.
  • You cannot buy tickets for the Caminito del Rey from the reception centre . Read about how to get tickets here: https://www.caminodelrey.es/no-tickets-for-the-caminito-left-online-no-problem-hopefully/
  • There is parking for 250 cars at 2 euros per day . However, many people are complaining that they are being charged on the day when they previously purchased parking and shuttle bus using the online system.
  • The shuttle bus from the reception centre to the nearest area for the Caminito del Rey start point takes about 20 minutes. There have been complaints similar to the parking that the bus charges ( 2.50 euros ) even though a bus ticket was purchased during the online process for an entry ticket.
  • The bus takes CASH ONLY will not accept card
  • Masks must be worn on the bus at all times.

If you use this parking whilst you walk the Caminito del Rey then I reccommend that you have the correct money in your pocket just in case the bus wants to charge you. (You can always complain later).

REMEMBER : This car park is approximately an hour away from the start point (by the time you have parked, got the bus, arrived at start area and then walked to the start point. Try to be parking at least 1.5 hours before your entry time .

Don’t be too dissapointed if you find the reception centre closed. The actual Caminito del Rey is much better anyway!

Caminito del Rey visitor centre

I am sure as time goes by these teething problems for the new Caminito del Rey visitors’ reception centre will be solved and also, none of them really take away the fantastic experience of walking the spectacular Caminito del Rey

Exploring the Thrilling Caminito del Rey: A Journey Through Nature, History, and Adrenaline

Exploring the Thrilling Caminito del Rey: A Journey Through Nature, History, and Adrenaline

Embark on a thrilling adventure in the heart of Malaga with the Caminito del Rey. This seven-kilometer trail, once deemed the world’s most dangerous, has been revitalized, offering a safe passage through breathtaking landscapes and a touch of history. Let’s delve into the wonder that is the Caminito del Rey.

Get guided tour tickets for the Caminito del Rey here.

Where the Caminito del Rey is Located

Situated in the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, a canyon carved by the Guadalhorce River, this extraordinary path spans Álora, Antequera, and Ardales. A narrow gorge, only ten meters wide in some sections, plummets to depths of 700 meters. Originally a pastoral route, the area transformed with the advent of industrialization in the mid-19th century, leading to the creation of a railway line connecting Córdoba’s mining basins and Malaga’s factories. Getting to the Caminito del Rey here.

Getting to El Chorro reservoirs and Camino del Rey

The path’s moniker changed to Caminito del Rey after King Alfonso XIII’s visit in 1921. Two parking options exist: starting in El Chorro and taking a shuttle to the Conde de Gudalhorce reservoir, or parking at the reservoir and shuttling back from El Chorro. Tickets, available on the official website, offer general or guided tour options.

A Tour Through a Changing Landscape

Venture into the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Natural Area , a protected haven for diverse flora and fauna. Winding through gorges, canyons, valleys, and swamps, the trail spans three kilometers, providing a challenging yet captivating journey. The linear route showcases the Gaitanejo Gorge, Tajo de las Palomas canyon, the Hoyo Valley, and the Gaitanes Gorge, revealing a dynamic landscape.

The view from the mirador close to the Guadalhorce reservoir

Much More Than Nature and Height

Beyond its dizzying heights, the Caminito del Rey boasts historical landmarks. The Gaitanejo Hydroelectric Power Plant, Sierra Parda cave houses, and remnants of the old power lines add layers to the experience. Commemorative plaques and preserved fossils along the walkways recount the path’s history, while the Valle del Hoyo unveils medieval Islamic and Castilian ceramics, hinting at a 13th-century settlement.

A mix of history, nature and adrenaline, it is a perfect plan to enjoy the interior of Malaga!

Alternative Ways to Walk the Caminito del Rey

In the Gaitanes Gorge section, an alternative route, less traversed but equally enchanting, offers a tunnel that bypasses the walkway. Virtual visits are available for those with mobility issues or vertigo.

A Great Diversity of Fauna and Flora

Designated a Special Protection Area for Birds, the Guadalhorce River surroundings harbor griffon vultures, golden eagles, and a myriad of other species. The area’s flora, adapting to rocky habitats, includes oleanders, reeds, and fruit trees, contributing to a rich ecosystem.

A New Visitor Reception Center for Caminito del Rey

The Visitor Reception Center designed by Luis Machuca promises to enhance the Caminito del Rey experience. Serving as a parking lot, viewpoint, and hiker welcome center, it will offer guidance, a cafeteria, and insights into the area’s history, geology, and archaeology. Read more about the visitor centre and parking options at the caminito del rey here.

Candidate for World Heritage

The Caminito del Rey and its surroundings are potential UNESCO World Heritage sites, encompassing natural wonders and historical landmarks within a 20 km radius.

How to Walk the Trail Respectfully

Certain restrictions apply, ensuring a safe and respectful experience. Safety gear is provided, and guidelines include appropriate attire, no consumption of food on walkways, and restrictions on selfie sticks and drones. The venue is open from Tuesday to Sunday, with exceptions on specific dates. Check out the rules and regulations here.

Day Trip to Gibraltar including Minibus Tour of the Rock

Day Trip to Gibraltar including Minibus Tour of the Rock

An exotic blend of the familiar and the unusual, Gibraltar is a must-visit. This tour ticks off all its top attractions – the Barbary apes of the Rock, St Michael's Caves and the Main Street. Rosa, one of our local guides, says: ‘Gibraltar is one of the most unexpected culture shocks I've ever encountered. It feels like my native Andalusia, but everything looks British. Wandering around, listening to the locals chat in their cute dialect is always a joy.'The fun kicks off on a high with a guided tour of the Rock of Gibraltar. Towering 426 metres above the Med, its steep slopes look daunting – but you'll be discovering it from the comfort of a minibus. The first stop is packed-with-monuments Europa Point, a popular spot for taking snaps. At the Upper Rock nature reserve, you'll meet the free-roaming Barbary apes – Europe's only wild monkeys. On a clear day, you can see all the way across to Africa. Next up is St Michael's Cave. Once home to Neanderthals and used as a war hospital during World War II, they're now an atmospheric concert hall.Back at ground level, Gibraltar's town centre has a distinctly British feel to it, whether it's the more obvious red phone and post boxes or the more succinct ones such as arched Georgian door frames. Tuck into a pie or maybe some fish and chips for lunch, before some retail therapy. Main Street, where many of the British high street chains have outlets, is famed for its duty-free shops.

camino del rey tour

Caminito del Rey Walk – 2023 Update on What you need to Know

  • by Anna Collins

The Caminito del Rey, which translates to ‘The Kings little Path’ was constructed in 1905 and was aptly named after King Alfonso XIII crossed the walk in 1921.

The walkway fell into dis-repair and despite being closed to the public, people still found a way to cross it, resulting in many tragic deaths.  Until it’s restoration in 2015, the Caminito was often referred to as ‘The World’s most Dangerous Footpath’ and the ‘One of The World’s Scariest Hikes’.

The Caminito re-opened in 2015 following a 4 year restoration project and is now much more of a scenic walk than the terrifying trek of years gone by. Since it re-opened around 300.000 tickets are sold annualy for this famous walk, it even attracts celebrities.

Gordon Ramsey, Gino D'acampo and Fred Sirieux crossing the famous Camino bridge.

Recently UK celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsey, Gino D’acampo and Fred Sirieix filmed part of the popular ITV show ‘Gordon, Gino and Fred: Viva Espana! taking on the walk.  The trio were filmed crossing the notorious suspension footbridge, the ‘Puente del Rey’ with a terrified Gino hilariously crawling along while Gordon and Fred look on in hysterics.

The walk is around 60km inland from the beautiful city of Malaga , is over 7km long and is made up of forest paths and footbridges most of which cling precariously to the gorge walls 100 metres above the River Guadalhorce.

Still not convinced it’s safe enough??? If my ‘terrified of heights’ husband can do this trek, anyone can.

Getting to the Caminito del Rey

Getting to the Caminito del Rey is easy, there are a number of different options to consider.

Car – A scenic drive through the Malaga countryside to El Chorro, depending on your start should take less than 1.5 hours.

Train – From Malaga’s Maria Zambrano train station, direct to El Chorro. The journey takes around 40 minutes direct and trains run several times a day for between €3 and €5.

Bus + ticket – By far the most stress free way to get to the Camino is to book a guided bus transfer with your entrance ticket to the walk included. This way someone else can take the hassle out of the planning, all you have to do is turn up at the meeting point at the agreed time to be picked up and taken there.

Railway through mountain

Railway line running through the gorge

Tourists and locals have been coming to the area around the Caminito for years, especially in summer time when the turquoise reservoirs offer much needed respite from the hot sun. There are also water sports including a giant inflatable water park on the lake from June to September.

There are plenty quaint little  campsites, b&b’s and guest houses  in the area known as the Guadalhorce valley.  The landscape is unique, breathtaking in fact and its all just so peaceful and calm.

How to book your tickets

Spaces are limited for the Caminito del Rey for safety reasons and they only allow around 50 people every half hour. Slots are released in 3 or 4 month batches and weekends get booked up quickly so there’s no point in just turning up hoping to get a slot.  You really must book ahead.

Booking is easy, just go to the calendar choose your date and time and select the number of tickets you want.  Pay with a credit card and print off the confirmation e-mail to take with you.

Start sign Caminito

The journey begins – Camino del Rey

We finally did the walk on chilly but beautifully sunny Saturday afternoon in December, after our previous booking a year earlier was aborted when my daughter woke up covered in chicken pox spots that morning.

If you can’t make it for any reason, they generally don’t offer refunds or alternative dates.  It’s tough luck basically as we found out after we were a ‘no show’ the first time. However if the walk is closed due to weather conditions, you can re-book for an alternative day.

Weather in Ardales, as it’s in land can be a few degrees cooler in winter than down on the coast and in summer expect it to be hotter, so be sure to check the forecast.  On the day of our walk temperatures in Malaga were 16 degrees but only 12 degrees in Ardales that day.

I was glad I threw an extra layer into the boot of the car just before we set off because with the blustery wind it felt much colder.

Arriving at the Caminito del Rey

The Camino del Rey walk is linea, you can only start the walk at one end, this is the North access point, you finish the walk at the South exit point.  For me the most logical thing to do if you arrive by car is this…drive to the North entrance , park your car and start the walk through the entrance tunnel.

When you finish the walk at the South end, directly opposite the Garganta Hotel is a bus stop, buses run several times per hour and run none stop between the North and South points, taking around 15 minutes each way.  You can pay the driver in cash, the cost is €2 pp (correct price for 2023)  and the bus will take you right back to  the North access right where you started.

If you have time however, I can personally recommend a well deserved pit-stop in the outdoor terrace bar of La Garganta Hotel, where you can rest your tired legs and marvel over the amazing walk you just completed.

North entrance and start of the walk

North entrance and start of the walk

We wanted to grab a light bite before starting the walk which was scheduled for 2pm, and knew there were some restaurants at the North entrance. Restaurant El Kiosko overlooking the lake was the perfect choice as next to it is the tunnel which you need to go through to start the Caminito del Rey.  Here you can pick up take away drinks and snacks too, bear in mind after this point, there is nowhere else to buy refreshemnts.

Restaurant El Kiosko

Restaurant El Kiosko & place to pick up snacks at the North entrance.

We arrived about 12.30pm and ventured upstairs at El Kiosko where they had a huge open fire so we grabbed a table right next to it and ordered. Portions were huge and we found it a bit much before embarking on a 7k hike.

There is a snack bar downstairs and also a grab and go type counter where you can pick up supplies like water, canned drinks, snack bars etc to take with you. There are also toilets downstairs at the entrance to the tunnel.

Restaurant El Kiosko open log fire

Roaring fire in restaurant El Kiosko

Allow yourself plenty of time

From this point (the tunnel), you still need to allow yourself 30 minutes before your time slot as this is NOT the start of the Caminito del Rey. It’s a 2.5 km scenic walk through forest to reach the starting point which will take 30 minutes at least.

Once at the starting point there were already loads of people waiting and there are staff to check your tickets, give you helmets and put you in the correct group. There are a lot of people that are part of guided tours which you can also book through the website, the tours are in English and Spanish.

Next they separate people into English and Spanish speakers for a brief safety instruction where the guide told us to allow around 2.5 hours to complete the walk, then you are off on your way.

lake el Chorro

One of the lakes near the Caminito

Almost immediately we came to a stretch of the route where the footpath changes to a wooden platform secured on top of steel rods which are pinned into the side of the steep gorge. There’a a mesh fence and handrail about waist high and most of this is suspended around 100 feet up.

It was only at this point I realised my husband of 12 years or so was actually really terrified of heights, this was real proper fear written all over his face.

The scenery along the route is amazing, my husband, unfortunately missed out on most of it because he could barely bring himself to look up or down. The vultures, buzzards and eagles circling above are ever present and I wondered if they were there waiting patiently for victims to fall.

As mentioned, the footpath fell into disrepair years ago and was closed in 2000 as it was so dangerous.  You can actually see the original path complete with holes, rusty metal poles and huge sections missing right below as you walk the new pathway.

Terrifying to think adrenaline junkies attempted this walk while it was in disrepair, despite the €6000 fine if caught, not to mention the huge risk involved.  Memorials are displayed to acknowledge 4 of the climbers that lost their life….

old dangerous path Caminito

Old and new path

No fear now though, It is completely safe once again and very well organised from start to finish.

The Walkway of Death

About 2km from the end as the path snakes around a bend it reaches a crucial point where walkers cross from one side of the gorge to the other.  The only way to do this is by walking over a suspended bridge about 10 metres in length and hundreds of metres high known as ‘The Walkway of Death’.

I’ve included a video showing a great overview of what to expect!

There are guides either side of the bridge making sure that everyone crosses safely. These guides also give the option for those too scared, to turn back, but with only 2 km to go from here, you’d be silly to turn back now.

For me, the bridge was my favourite bit, it was such a great opportunity to take photos and video from all angles. Suspended mid air between the rock face with absolutely nothing interrupting your view.

Camino del Rey walk of death

Walk of nerves!

The Walkway of Death.

Once safely on the other side and during the final km stretch, the Caminito takes a dramatic path along a very straight and narrow cliff, then finally comes back to solid ground for the final few hundred metres.

There are some information boards explaining how and when it was built and about the restoration. Stop and look at them as they really do help you to appreciate the almost impossible task of its construction.

Map el Chorro region

Map showing the route.

Getting back to your car

All that is left to do is follow the signs for the El Chorro train station, its easy as its a straight road. Pass the car park and a camp site, then you’ll see the train station on the left with a handy little bar to grab a quick drink.

Next to the station is where you pick up the bus to take you back to the start. There were already people waiting when we arrived and a bus had just pulled in however there was no room for us so we had to wait 30 minutes for the next one.

El Chorro Train station

El Chorro Train station

As previously mentioned, if you have a little bit of time a fantastic place to grab a bite to eat and a drink is La Garganta Hotel and restaurant, directly opposite the bus stop. Walk round to the outside terrace for some amazing views over the Caminito and a well earned drink.

I really wish I had known about this hotel before our visit as it’s the perfect location to the Caminito del Rey to stay over for a night or two and explore the area more.  It has so much rustic charm and gorgeous views over the lake and the final stretch of the Caminito del Rey.

I’ve rounded up the best hotels and accommodation ideally located to explore this amazing national park area

The bus was punctual and the journey back to the car/North entrance took only 15 minutes.  The bus takes you just past the car park and drops you at El Kiosko and the entrance tunnel to the start of the route.  The last bus, at the time of writing, leaves at 7pm, as tempting as it is to stay for another drink on the Garganta terrace bar, you would be left stranded if you missed it.

All in all the walk took a total us of 2 hours 30 minutes, including the short walk leading to the start of the Caminito del Rey.

If I could summarise, this walk is as close you will ever come to feeling like you are part of a Indiana Jones movie.  The clear glass viewing platform, if you dare to step onto it is a reminder of how unnaturally high up you are, even more apparent if you are afraid of heights.

It is unlike any other place you will ever go to and even though some say it has lost its edge since it’s restoration. If you are an adrenaline junkie then I believe you cannot come to the Malaga region and not walk the Caminito del Rey.

Essential Information

Bring plenty water, snacks and sunscreen

Small backpack (large bags are not allowed)

Comfortable clothing and footwear (hiking shoes are best)

Pets are not allowed

Children under 8 years old are not allowed

There are no toilets along the path

The walk will occasionally close in the event of bad weather – refunds are not offered

The last bus from the South to North is 7pm, the bus accepts cash only.

Thank you for this review! I will go there next week with my boyfriend, I think I am like your husband, but I hope I will be able to overcome my fear and enjoy Caminito Del Rey! We will go there with train and after hike we will have few hours till the train back, is it possible to explore lakes near this place by foot? 🙂

Anna Collins

Hi. My friend is actually terrified of heights and almost didn’t go despite having booked it weeks in advance. He is so glad he did it, you will be too I hope and you’ll be super proud of yourself if you do!

If you get the bus back to to the North entrance or starting point then there is a huge beautiful lake to explore, there are some water sports too depending on the time of year. Also many cafes with beautiful views across the lake if you feel like just resting and taking in the scenery.

At the south end, where you will finish the walk, pop into the reception of La Garganta hotel, they will give you some information on other walks around the area and the lake there. There’s plenty to do to fill the rest of your day.

Enjoy and you never know you might get over your fear of heights!

Experienced the Caminito last week and reading up on articles like yours really helped, everything went so smooth. It was a highlight of my recent trip to Malaga, epic scenes. Thanks for the guidance!

Hi Paul, that’s amazing, thanks so much for the feedback, it’s so nice to hear that I have helped someone have a great experience. Im glad you enjoyed the Camino, it’s hard to put into words how breathtaking it is don’t you think? Honestly, thanks for taking the time to let me know.

Hi, you mention the train to El Chorro, how far is the walk entrance from there. Phil

The El Chorro train station is at the South end of the Camino walk (where the walk ends), you need to get to the North entrance which is the start. You can pre-book the bus at the same time you get your ticket for the Camino del Rey but i believe you can also just pay the driver when you get there. The bus stop is right outside the train station and runs every 30 minute, it will take you directly to the North entrance (the start) in about 15 or 20 minutes. I think it costs about 1.50€ for the bus journey.

Hi Anna, thank you for your very detailed review of the Caminito del Rey which will help me plan my trip. I hope there will still be spaces available in late July 2019 and plan to book today.

I am travelling with a bunch of teens and want to know if the water activities on the lake need to be pre-booked, and if so how do I go about that from the UK?

Thank you, Kiwi_Jill_66

hi Jillian. Thanks for your message. I hope you managed to get booked since July is not that popular with locals as it will be very hot. You will enjoy walking the Caminito del Rey it’s such an amazing thing to do.

Regarding water sports, I’m not aware of a facility to pre book, you can literally turn up, rent a kayak or peddle boat and off you go. Usually from June to September there is a huge inflatable water park out on the lake opposite to the entrance of the Camino del Rey tunnel. It’s a fantastic way to cool off and your bunch of teens will love it. It’s about 10 euros for an hour which is usually long enough.

Have a fantastic trip.

First saw this when on a day trip out around 8/9 years ago. The guide was pointing out the railway and telling how it featured in the film Von Ryan’s Express, they briefly mentioned the footpath saying it was closed as being dangerous. Looked it up on the internet when we got home viewed the video on YouTube and said I would like to walk it if it was ever restored. Got my chance last year and whilst some may consider it fairly tame compared to some walks (and would not disagree) it really is an excellent day out. I also am not a fan of heights even if I did use to work with a team running outdoor pursuits and mountain walking courses but never I felt nervous – perhaps it was the magnificent scenery that kept my mind off it. My wife for years has allowed herself to be dragged around various events supporting me said she had enjoyed it – now that is an endorsement.

Thanks for your comment Frank. I totally agree and know loads of people that are scared of heights and have plucked up the courage to do the Camino, all of whom said they were so glad they did it. My husband and father-in-law to name two. The scenery and surroundings, as you say are enough to take your mind off how high up you are. I do hope your wife enjoyed this one too, it really is a great day out!!

Anna we have booked for next Friday. I have a real fear of heights but love photography. Hoping the love of this will help me achieve this walk. After reading your blog we have booked the hotel for the night before. We will head up on Thursday and enjoy the area. Looking forward to a great day out.

How did you enjoy it Margaret? Hope you had great weather and a fantastic stay.

Thank you for the detailed information which really helped with planning our trip. We managed to book the hotel at El Chorro which I didn’t know about. Originally we were due to return back to Ronda after our walk and the trains are very infrequent and finish early. The Garganta hotel has made our travel so much easier, staying there will make life so much more simple. We travel next week; Malaga, Ronda and then the Caminito. Fabulous.

That’s great to hear Michelle. It’s a fab hotel and makes everything about the walk so much easier since it’s right at the finish.

I’ glad you found my post useful in planning your trip and wish you a lovely stay in and around Malaga.

Alison. I know loads of people who put off doing this for many years and absolutely all of them have said how glad they were that they finally did it. I’m sure you’ll feel exactly the same. Just remember the bar at the hotel Garganta at the finish has great wine and beer, that will be enough to get you through it!

Thanks for reading and commenting 😉

I’m just wondering if it’s possible to start from the South Side cause we will be catching the train and walk back instead of catching the bus? Or we have a Tarjeta Transbordo can we use it on the bus?

Muchas gracias,

hi Liz. When it first opened you could start at either the North or South side, unfortunately now you can only start at the North. So you would have to take the bus to the North side to start your walk. I believe you will have to buy the bus ticket, it’s about around €1.50 per person.

Hi Liz Thanks for the great article. As soon as covid clears, this is going on my bucket List! Regards

We took the train from Malaga and selected the option to include the guided tour – I would recommend this option to augment the audio guide once we can get into groups again. A must for any visit to Malaga.

Great to hear, glad you enjoyed it.

Hi Anna, Brilliant blog, reading it has inspired us to book the walk. However I can’t see any option on the website to add the bus tickets. Am I missing something?!

Thanks Emily. You can add the tickets at the end of the booking process if I’m not mistaken, alternatively just wait at the bus stop when you finish your walk and as long as there are seats available you can pay the driver direct.

Hi this blog is really useful. I have booked for February 2024. Myself and husband have walking boots but wondering if trainers are suitable for our children age (19 and 14) thanks

Hi Gillian, yes definitely. We wore trainers when we did the walk and they were absolutely fine.

Avatar

May I ask if it was easy to find corresponding train times to get there and back?

The trains run a few times a day, you can book at Renfe direct.

Hi Anna, I’ll be going on the walk tomorrow and though I do have mild vertigo I’m hoping the views will take my mind off that! The only tickets available were those without guides so I guess I’ll read up beforehand or after 🙂 Regarding the shuttle bus to take you back, there wasn’t the option to do this on the (hopeless) website, do you know if I can just pay the driver? Thanks for a great article!

Sorry for the huge delay in replying Ben! Hope you managed to pay the driver and take the bus, the website is pretty hopeless, I have to agree!

HI Anna we are looking to do this walk in May. We are staying at the Gran Miramar Hotel in the centre of Malaga – do you know approximately what the cost of a taxi would be to take us there for this walk. Alternatively do you know if there are excursions that pick up from points in the city. Thank you

I don’t know Diane. You can download the Uber app when you arrive and get a price for an Uber, alternatively you can get the train from Malaga as per my post.

Avatar

Hello Anna! Can I stop at the North entrance by car from Malaga? then we would go back from the south entrance for the car. How long is the entrance from the north car park to the entrance? Thanks. Alex

You can park your car at the North entrance on the road side, its a 30 minute walk from the car park area to the start of the camino. Book the shuttle bus when you finish at the south side to take you back to your car.

Hi Anna, I just booked my October ticket today and am hoping I’ll make it in time from central Malaga. I’m due to start at 10:20 but was going to get the really early train. I’ve heard there are 2 entrances? Both are behind the kiosk restaurant, but one is much shorter? How much total time do you think train to el Chorro then shuttle, then tunnel will take? I’m interested to hear about Diana’s Uber because I may have to choose nuthatch option and then train back. Thanks so much

Hi, it’s quite an early start you have booked. There is only one entrance to the Camino, this is the North, the walk finishes at the South and the South is where El Chorro train station is, so great for you getting home but it’s a good 15 minutes car/uber ride from South where you’ll get off the train to the north. Also factor in a 30 minute walk from where the taxi will drop you to the actual start of te Camino walk as you have to meander through the woods to get to the start. You are right in saying it’s behind the Kiosk bar/cafe, just be aware of the times mentioned. Pre-book a taxi or uber if you can as from memory there weren’t any taxis waiting by the train station, id hate for you to miss it. Maybe consider staying in the Garganta hotel the night before your walk, it’s opposite the train station and has very pretty views.

Avatar

Will it be really hot walking the Caminito del Rey early to mid October starting around 10.30am or does the height make it breezy and cooler? Thank you

Hi Anne, it can still be hot early October, there are many shadu areas though throughout the walk and places to sit and rest if you get too hot.

Do you know if there are taxis available at the finish, at El Chorro? We are likely to finish just as the bus schedule takes it’s 2 hour lunch break so don’t want to hang around that long to get back to our car near El Kiosko.

Hi Lisa, Im honestly not sure if there are taxi. The hotel Garganta over the road from the bus stop will likely call you one though if there aren’t any already waiting.

No toilets ? Nature toilet allowed then ?

Hmmm i very much doubt it.

Avatar

Is there a age requirement for children on this thank yiu

Yes it’s 8 years of age minimum.

Avatar

Hi Anna Is there anywhere to sit and wait, like a bar or coffee house if you are not doing the walk but accompanying friends that are doing it. I would like to go with them for the trip but am I not able to do the walk itself. Thanks

Yes there are cafe/bars at the start and at the end of the walk, a lovely hotel with a cafe calle La Garganta at the South end which is where the walk ends is perfect to enjoy a drink and has amazing views over the gorge.

Avatar

We are in our late 70s / early 80s – reasonably fit but not great walkers. Do you think we could manage the walk? Do you have to do it in a fixed time or can you stop every now and then to regain energy? Thanks.

Hi, thanks for your comment. It’s great you are considering it, just a few things I would keep in mind before you decide. The walk to the start of the Camino is around 2km and it is in forestland which is quite uneven in many places and there are few banks too. Once you get to the start it is fairly flat for the remaining 5km of the actual Camino route, that said, it’s narrow in parts and of course when you get to the suspension bridge if it’s windy, it does move a fair bit. There are some benches along the route but i don’t remember seeing that many, which means there are not many places to sit and rest during the walk if you were to get tired and want to take a rest. I don’t believe you have to finish it within a certain time, but best to book a morning slot if you do go as it closes at a certain time in thre afternoon and you wouldn’t want to feel rushed.

Hi Anna, I’m planning to do the walk in mid-September, a few days after I celebrate a significant birthday! I’m staying at La Garganta Hotel for two nights (before and after) – it looks absolutely beautiful! Is the hotel nearest to the start or the finish of the walk? If you have any recommendations for other ‘must-sees’ in the local area, I’d love to know also. Thanks so much Caroline x

Hi Caroline. Congratulations on your birthday! The Garganta hotel is at the end of the walk. So if you are staying here the night before your walk you can take the bus to the start, the bus stop is directly opposite the hotel. Then you’ll finish the walk right where you took the bus. It works really well.

The lakes are really beautiful to see while you are in the area, some really nice restaurants overlooking the main lake in the area, look up restaurant El Nirador Ardales. Lovely views over the lake from this restaurant.

Have a great time and happy birthday.

Thank you so much, Anna!

I meant to say El Mirador restaurant…sorry!

Hello Anna, I’ve booked a guided tour for 15:00 hour. I am very confused because I find conflicting info about the meeting point for the tour – the visitor reception center, El Kiosko, the point where you said the tickets are checked – and there are quite a few kilometers between them so I can’t just go and see what happens… Can you help me a little bit by explaining the actual location where I should arrive? Thank, Alex

Hi Alex, Sorry for the confusion, have you already completed the walk now? If you have it booked for a later date then hopefully i can help. Have you booked the bus with entrance ticket and guided tour, or just entrance with guided tour? If it’s the latter, then you start walking on your own from El Kiosko until you reach the ticket checking point, this is then where you’ll meet your guide and your tickets will be checked etc. So to confirm, you need to give yourself around 1 hour for getting from El Kiosko through the woodland to the check point, start from El Kiosko at 2pm or before if you can. Please let me know how you found it, I am interested to get your feedback. Apologies for not replying sooner.

Hi Anna, We’re planning to visit caminito del rey next week. 🙂 We’re going to take the train. Do you think we can catch the train back to Malaga at 16.39 if we’re going to start the hike at 11.50am/12.20nn? We’ll arrive on el chorro at 10.33am. Thank you.

Apologies for not responding before you did the walk. Did you manage to get the train back?

We are a 3 generation English family (youngest 13 oldest 74)with varying levels of fitness, who intend to do the walk in August. Do we have to have a guided tour or can we just book and do it in our own time – not sure what breaks we will need along the way

Hi Mandy, No you definitely don’t need to do it with a guide, it generally takes longer with the guide than if you were to do it on your own. There are some picnic benches along the way, but honestly not that many places to stop and take a break since much of the walk is too narrow to accomodate benches. Keep in mind that in August it is going to be very hot and you will need at least 3 hours to complete it.

Avatar

Thanks for such a great article! I’m coming with a group and as such we will probably get a mini bus up there and then get another one back later in the day. but would love to go for a swim and chill after the walk . Is the lake with the water sports (or just a nice area to chill) in walking distance or even a shuttle bus/short taxi ride?

Hi Lisa, yes the lake with water sports is righ at the North entrance where you will start the walk. It depends on what time of year you are planning to do it though as the water sports are usually only operating during high season. Either way, there are picnic benches on the river banks and it’s a nice picnic spot even if you don’t swim. Have a great time.

REVIEWS FROM OTHER TRAVELERS

‘The coach journey was efficient, we were the first to be picked up so we had many pickups during the next hour before starting our journey. The first stop on the outward journey was at Ardales for a welcome break and bite to eat. Caminito del Rey Guided Tour was an unforgettable experience. The group on the walk was large with many stopping on the narrow walkways taking pictures. To keep up and listen to the guide we needed to be with this group. If we did it again we would hold back from the main group so that we had our own space and could take in all the amazing views without stopping and bumping into people. Overall an amazing day.’
‘The day trip was really a unique experience! Just walk in between the rocks and looking at nature was breath taking. Do bring some water and a snack with you. The walk itself lasts for 2hrs approximately. I’d recommend this activity to all nature lovers who are not too afraid of the heights :)’

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THIS TOUR

This tour has a number of pick-up stops in Costa del Sol, including one in central Fuengirola, and the last pick-up location in Malaga. After you leave Malaga, the airconditioned bus will take you to the Northern access to Caminito del Rey, from where you will walk through a short tunnel with your guide until you reach the entrance point.

At the entrance, you will get a short safety briefing, pick up your helmets and follow your guide to the start of the trail.

On your way, enjoy breathtaking views , take photos, learn about the history of the trail, enjoy views of the Conde de Guadalhorce Dam, Chorro Reservoirs and stroll through the famous wooden boardwalks. The trail has an elevation between 300 to 400 meters above sea level, so amazing views are guaranteed (check out the photos below!)

As you walk, you might spot griffon vultures cruising over your head and a train passing by from the el Chorro railway station. The last part of the trail is a section with a suspension bridge – check my recommendations below if you have a fear of heights.

After the suspension bridge, you will encounter the only uphill climb up the stairs, which shouldn’t be too demanding for most people.

CAMINITO DEL REY TOUR FROM FUENGIROLA: HOW TO BOOK

Use the form below to check the availability of this tour for your selected dates, and choose the number of people travelling.

This tour does NOT include hotel pick-up , but the bus will pick you up from a meeting point in central Fuengirola, where they will also drop you off at the end of the tour. Once you confirm your booking details and pay for the tour, you will receive an email with detailed instructions for the pick up and other organisation tips for this trip.

This tour does not include free time on the trail, only a break in the town of Ardales ahead of the trail.

Unlike with a self-guided tour, you don’t need to use the shuttle bus and this tour will get you directly to the entrance of the trail.

The estimated time to walk the trail is between 1.5 to 2 hours.

CHOOSING YOUR TOUR OPERATOR

There are a number of local companies offering a day tour from Fuengirola or Costa del Sol to Caminito del Rey. Most of these have the same specks , and the same trip duration, the only difference comes from the rating of the tour guides they use, and the languages available.

When selecting the tour operator, you should pay attention to three main things:

  • tickets to the pathway are included in the price
  • check the reviews of other travellers
  • check that the tour guide is available in English

The prices for these other trips are also roughly the same . In case my recommended tour from Fuengirola is sold out, here are some alternatives you can also check for this tour:

Expert Tips for Visiting Caminito Del Rey [2023]

Now you got your tour booked, what should you bring with you? How should you prepare and what to do to make the most out of your trip?

This section will answer all your questions.

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU

If you’re ready to book your trip, there are just a few things you need to have with you:

  • your booking confirmation
  • water bottle
  • comfortable shoes (no flip-flops or open-toe shoes)
  • comfortable clothing
  • camera or mobile phone for photos
  • sun lotion & sunglasses
  • safety helmets will be provided to you by the entrance

caminito del rey tour from fuengirola

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

It’s super important to follow the safety instructions which will be provided to you at the start of the trail. These include:

  • Stay on the path
  • Children under the age of 8 are not allowed
  • Do not throw any objects from the path
  • Do not touch, pick or destroy any plants
  • Smoking is forbidden
  • For safety reasons, selfie sticks, umbrellas and sharp objects are not allowed
  • No big backpacks are allowed (backpacking size), small standard size are fine

STARTING POINT

At the entrance of the Caminito del Rey, you will see a small booth where they store safety helmets .

Right next to it are toilets , I recommend using them before you set on the trail.

Next to the toilets, you will also find vending machines, in case you need to buy more water.

After safety instructions , you can set off following your guide. The whole path will take about 1.5 hours to 2 hours to walk, depending on the speed of your group.

FEAR OF HEIGHTS

If you have a fear of heights or don’t like high altitudes, and you think you might struggle with this tour, the good news is – it’s quite unlikely (although not impossible!).

I also have a fear of heights, and there were only a few spots on the pathway that made me feel a little uneasy, otherwise, I was surprised it was actually very manageable .

The hardest part is possibly crossing the suspension bridge which you will encounter closer to the end of the trail. The bridge is not that long, and there is a member of staff available in case you need help crossing it!

caminito del rey tour from fuengirola

WEATHER CONDITIONS

Tour of el caminito del rey (king’s little pathway) is subject to good weather conditions, for obvious reasons.

In case of bad weather, they will notify everyone with tickets for the day that the trip is cancelled. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do in that case is to get a new entrance ticket, or book a new tour.

END OF THE WALK

After crossing the suspension bridge, you will get to the last part of the trail which is the only section with a steep climb on stairs, so pace yourself for that one.

Following that last section, you will reach the end fo the walk and then continue on foot until you reach the exit point.

You will get to the control cabin where you deposit the safety helmets. A short walk from there you will see the exit, where you will find a few stalls selling local products, like local wine, magnets, drinks and quick snacks.

You will have a few minutes spare for quick refreshment or shopping, before heading back to the bus.

Utopian Soviet Buildings

Utopian Soviet Buildings

  • The Palace of the Soviets instead of the Cathedral of the Christ the Saviour. It could have become one of the highest buildings in the world with a 100 m Lenin statue on the top.
  • The eighth Stalinist skyscraper instead of the Zaryadye Park. It was supposed to be the tallest of all the Sisters.
  • The Narkomtiazhprom (the People’s Commissariat of Heavy Industry) building instead of the GUM. How would the Red Square look like with three skyscrapers or gigantic staircases going all the way up to the 16th floor?
  • The Palace of Labour instead of the Moskva Hotel. What was it, kind of a fantastic beast lying on the square or an ultimate Constructivist manifesto?
  • The alternative Lenin’s Mausoleum, the “Leningradskaya Pravda” buildings and many others.

Testimonial

"A very enjoybale day in Moscow. We had a very nice and knowledgeable guide Anastasia.(Nastia) She was very passionate about the City and we learnt so much in our brief four hours walk with her! Certainly this walking tour added a lot of value to our Moscow Holiday. A great idea to educate visitors about Russia and Moscow. The group was intimate enough to ask questions and stop for snacks etc..we thoriughly enjoyed it and would highly reccomend it.Carry on doing a great job!"

"I really enjoyed the tour, it was a great experience, very informative and fun. I will definitely tell everybody about that tour, keep it it is a fantastic idea!"

"Sorry I do not remember the names :( ... They were very talkative and very into everything. I think they both really love the city, and they made me feel like this to. They knew much about History, which was very informative! Great guides!!!"

"We partook of the fantastic Petersburg Free Tour. Due to our timing during the low season (shockingly not everyone is flocking to Moscow while the average temperature is 15F), it ended up being just us and Sonia, the afore-mentioned super-guide. She quickly ascertained the limited scope of our wanderings.."

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
