Milan Transport Tickets and Travel Cards

Milan Transport Tickets and Travel Cards

One-way tickets, 24 or 72-hour passes, weekly travel cards... discover all the types of ticket and transport cards available in Milan .

All the tickets and travel cards are valid for all of Milan’s means of transport: urban buses , trams , Milan Metro and urban trains.

You can purchase the transport tickets in the various metro stations, in the off-licenses and in any of Milan’s parking meters. From 2020 you'll have to load tickets onto an electronic card, RicaricaMi, of personal use.

Most useful tickets for tourists

Single ticket.

A single ticket covers areas Mi1, Mi2, and Mi3 and is  valid for 90 minutes since it is first punched into the validating machine. You can change metro lines during this time, but you cannot leave the metro station and then come back and use the same ticket . The price of a single urban ticket costs € 2 ( US$ 2.10).

24-hour travel card

The one-day travel card is valid for 24 hours since it's first punched into a validating machine. This means that if you validate your travel pass at 1:30 pm you can use the transport until 1:30 pm the next day. It covers areas Mi1, Mi2, and Mi3 and costs  € 7 ( US$ 7.40) .

72-hour travel card

The three-day travel card permits unlimited travel and is valid for 72   hours since it's first validated, costing € 12 ( US$ 12.80).

Ticket for your luggage

You'll sometimes have to buy a separate ticket for your luggage, depending on its size, and note that if you have more than one suitcase, you might not be allowed to get on the metro, tram, or bus.

The suitcases which can be carried onboard are very similar to the dimensions of the ones allowed on an airplane. The small ones (50 centimeters) are allowed on for free and the larger ones (50 x 90 centimeters) must have their own Luggage ticket. Suitcases over 90 cm are not allowed on Milan’s public transport, so you might want to think about taking another means of transport because you could be fined if your luggage is too large.

Other tickets and travel cards

10 standard tickets.

The price of 10 standard tickets is € 18 ( US$ 19.10), which saves you a little money compared to if you were to purchase 10 separate single tickets. This ticket can only be used by one person.

Weekly 2x6 ticket

This travel card is not very useful for visitors. It allows you to travel twice a day for 6 days during the same week for € 8.40 ( US$ 8.90).

Evening ticket

This ticket gives you unlimited access from 8 pm until the end of the service . The price of the ticket costs € 3 ( US$ 3.20).

Special tickets for the Fiera Milano (Rho Fiera)

A ticket to the Fiera Milano on Milan Metro’s line 1 costs € 2.55 ( US$ 2.70) per journey. This ticket will allow you to change lines and take other means of transport for 105 minutes after first validating it.

Travel Cards

As well as the already mentioned tickets, Milan’s public transport system also has weekly, monthly, and annual travel cards. These cards are not so useful for tourists unless you're planning on staying in Milan for over a week, as the card itself costs € 10 ( US$ 10.60).

Milano Card Cost-Savings

Plus, you get access to free public transport! The cost of one metro ticket is €1.50 and is valid for 90 minutes. Imagine accessing it for two complete days! You will be saving a ton of money just on public transport with the Milano Card. Plus, you also get additional discounts on the attractions in the city.

Ideally, visitors spend at least 2 days in the city and both the Milan Pass and the Milano Card are suitable options for exploring the city. You can choose either of the cards based on your requirements.

  • Budget conscious Milan Pass is a complete experience and includes free tickets to all the important attractions and tours and even includes public transport. However, if you want a more basic ticket and want the benefits of public transport plus discounts then the Milano Card is suitable for you.
  • Time conscious If you are looking at something that will specifically save time then you should look out for the Milan Pass. The Hop-on Hop-off Bus tour will take you across all the spots in the city in a day’s time and the free tickets to important attractions will help you save time spent in standing in queues.
  • Set your own pace If you are in Milan for a few days and want to explore the city at your own pace without a specific agenda, then the Milano Card is ideal for you. It offers free public transport and free tickets to a few attractions plus big discounts on all others. This way you can choose where you want to go.
  • Expansive options If you are looking for flexibility and array of options, then both the cards are well suited for the purpose. Both the Milan Pass and Milano Card offer discounts on attraction tickets, tours, experiences as well as shopping and entertainment venues.
  • Kid friendly If you are traveling with kids then you should prefer going for the all-inclusive Milan pass. This way you get the free Hop-on Hop-off Bus tour which is ideally suited for kids, you don’t have to walk much and yet get to experience all the spots.

Milan transport: all about bus, streetcar and metro tickets

travel cards milan

There are several fares for getting around Milan by public transport. In Italy, the ticket system is unified – you can ride any form of public transport with a single ticket.

You can stay at a hotel near the subway and see the sights. Also, the intracity trains routes are underground. Streetcars and trolleybuses can travel between neighborhoods, where you can admire the city in passing. Buses are suitable for those who stay at a hotel far from the subway .

Milan: book hotel in

There are also electric trains that run every 30 minutes between Milan and Lombardy. To use them, you need tickets for the suburban areas.

Attention ! You can buy the tickets in vending machines and ticket offices at the entrance to the metro, as well as in kiosks – newsstands, and tobacco shops. Machines accept cash and cards.

Before you use it, place the ticket to the validator or punch it out. If it has a magnetic stripe, put it to the reader each time you change. Often, they check tickets at the exits, so keep them until the end of your trip. We do not recommend riding as a stowaway since you can receive a fine of up to 100 euros.

Types of tickets for traveling in Milan

Types of tickets for traveling in Milan

The most common city ticket (Biglietto Urbano) costs €1.50 and is valid for 90 minutes after you punch it. During this time you can use the ticket for Milan’s streetcars, trolleybuses, and buses, but you can enter the metro only once.

By the way, it is convenient to pay for these tickets via SMS . Send the text “ATM” to the number 48444; it will allow you to pay for a single trip on the subway for 1.50 euros. You can also buy an international SIM card.

  • A 4-trip ticket (Biglietto integrato per 4 viaggi) costs €6.00 and equals four trips of 90 minutes each.
  • A 10-ride ticket (Carnet 10 viaggi) costs €13.80 and is the equivalent of ten rides of 90 minutes. The conditions are the same as in the city ticket.
  • Evening ticket (Biglietto serale) – valid from 8pm until the end of the journey.
  • One-day ticket (Biglietto giornaliero) – costs €4.50 and can be used up to 24 hours for all forms of public transport, including the train.
  • two-day ticket (Biglietto bigiornaliero) – €8.25, valid for 48 hours, and the conditions of use are similar to the one-day ticket.
  • Weekly 2×6 ticket (Settimanale 2×6) – costs €10. With this type of pass, you can make two trips of 90 minutes a day. Each trip is equal to one trip on the Milan subway or train. On other modes of transport, travel is not limited. If two trips remain unused, you can use them on Sunday.

You can also ride around Milan on a bicycle or motorcycle .

Baggage ticket (applies to people who have more than one piece of luggage or large items of luggage) – cost €1.50, valid also – 90 minutes from the time of receiving it.

If you go to Milan with large luggage, it is better to order a transfer from the airport .

Three types of travel cards – plastic cards in Milan

You can buy a plastic card, called a RicaricaMi , that is valid for four years from the date of purchase. The cost is €2.50. After you purchase it, it will become programmed with one standard ticket. After that, you can add several variants of the above tickets to the travel card. The card does not have a photo or name on it.

The second type – a plastic card with a photo. It is also valid four years from the date of purchase. An ATM office can fill it out, and you must have documents (passport). The cost of an empty card is €10. You can recharge the card using the following payment methods:

  • A weekly ticket costs €11.30. It is valid from Monday to Sunday and has an unlimited number of rides per week.
  • A monthly ticket costs €30, with unlimited rides during the month.
  • An annual ticket costs €300, with an unlimited number of trips during the year.

If you are a student, it is cheaper to buy a travel card with your personal number and photo at ATM POINT kiosks, where you can have it made within fifteen days. Student card fees:

Milan Public Transport - Tickets and Travel cards

Milan is a vibrant city with several attractions and historical landmarks. Getting to these places is made easier with the Milan public transport. If you are in Milan for a short visit or staying here for a longer duration, buying a ticket or travel pass is necessary to use the metro, trams, and buses provided for public transport. The tickets and travel passes are offered by Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM), the organization that manages public transport within Milan. ATM is owned by the Milan municipality (Comune di Milano) and through its subsidiaries, it even operates the Copenhagen underground.

What are the various available tickets/travel cards?

There is a wide variety of tickets and travel passes available. These passes/cards range from an ordinary ticket valid for 90 minutes up to an annual travel card of 1 year. Before going into further details about each available card type, we need to know about the fare zones in Milan. There are 8 fare zones roughly concentric in shape representing Milan and neighboring municipalities. With the urban zone representing the city center, other zones are named Mi3, Mi4, and so forth, up to Mi9. There is an increment in fare as we move further up the zones. To keep it simple, only Urban zone fares are discussed going forward. More details on the entire fare system are on this ATM webpage .

  • Ordinary ticket lasting 90 minutes from the time of first validation and costs 2.20€
  • Daily pass valid for 24 hours from first validation and costs 7.60€
  • 3-day pass valid for 3 consecutive days from the day of first validation up to the end of service on the third day. Costs 13€
  • Weekly travel card valid only from Monday to Sunday of the same week and costs 18.50€ (for the Mi1-Mi3 zone)
  • Monthly travel card valid for one calendar month and costs 39€
  • Annual travel card valid for 12 consecutive months and costs 330€

Which ticket/travel pass should I buy?

So this will be mainly based on the duration and how often one uses public transport. If you are in Milan for a short visit of 1 day or a few hours, go with the ordinary ticket. If you plan on using public transport multiple times throughout the day, then the daily pass might be the better option.

For anything more than a day, a travel pass is worth your while. For a short trip of 2-3 days in Milan, a 3-day pass would work out best. As you can avoid buying the ordinary ticket multiple times due to its limited validity of 90 minutes. If the travel duration is slightly longer than 3 days, a weekly pass might be a good choice. Although, be aware that even if the weekly travel card is purchased mid-week, say on a Wednesday. It will only last up to the Sunday of the same week. Depending on the duration and day of the week, it is useful to decide between a 3-day pass and a weekly travel card.

On the other hand, if you are in Milan for more than 2 weeks, the monthly travel card works best. Likewise, for anything more than 9 months annual travel card is preferable. Although the fares for the monthly and annual travel cards might seem high, various concessions and subsidies are available. The discounts on travel cards in Milan are based on age and income. Children under the age of 14 are allowed to travel for free on public transport. For people under the age of 27, the monthly and annual travel card costs 22€ and 200€ respectively. Give this page a read if you want to know more about the reduced-rate travel card in Milan. It might be particularly useful if you are a student in Milan who uses public transport for your daily commute.

Why do I need a travel card?

The travel pass would save you the hassle of buying a ticket before every journey. It is convenient and allows you to travel at any time. The travel card gives you access to buses, trams, and the metro. As long as you are in the Urban zone and the travel card is purchased for the same zone, it can also be used for accessing suburban railways. Also (mainly 😄), since public transport in Milan is not free. Although in all seriousness, transportation costs in Milan are comparable or slightly lower than its counterparts like other major cities around Europe.

How do I get a travel card?

Travel cards are charged to an electronic card. The electronic card can be obtained from ATM points, newsstands, tobacconists (Tabacchi), and bars. ATM points are designated offices within the subway stations and help carry out most operations. They are currently in the metro stops - Duomo, Centrale, Cadorna, Loreto, Garibaldi, Romolo, and Zara. Advice would be to book an appointment beforehand through the ATM app at any of these ATM points closest to you. The Electronic card is issued after filling in the Card Request Form along with a passport photo and valid ID proof. At ATM points, electronic cards are handed in immediately while there is a waiting time (around 2 weeks) if submitted through other outlets. The electronic card is valid for 4 years and costs 10€.

The electronic card obtained is empty to start with and will have to be charged based on your travel plan of choice like monthly or annual. The charging of electronic travel cards in Milan is through ATM points, automatic ticket machines at the stations, and other outlets like newsstands and tobacconists. Do not forget to validate your ticket before the start of your journey. Without stamping, tickets are considered invalid and could lead to fines. Likewise, travel cards are validated through the totem poles that are present in every station before using them the first time of their recharged plan. In case the electronic card is lost or stolen, a new card will be issued for a charge of 15€, and upon presenting a valid ID document.

Now that you know of various available tickets and travel cards for using Milan’s public transport, I hope it makes your planning and commutes much easy. If you are in Milan for a short visit then purchasing a single ticket or daily pass is a good choice. However, buying individual tickets each time you wish to travel becomes an inconvenience over long periods. Furthermore, having a travel card will be a better option economically for frequent users.
