Tastes and Sounds of the South (10 Days)

We had a really good group of people, we all got along well and enjoyed each other’s company. The tour was so interesting as it was all about the history of music and the origins of country, blues, rock and soul. The tastes and sounds of the southern areas of the US states. It was fascinating and was a journey of discovery for me with Austin who is a highly experienced and knowledge tour guide. Well done Trafalgar, you have never disappointed us.

How safe is visiting Louisiana as a tourist?

Because of many causes, New Orleans has a horrible reputation for criminal activity, but the truth is that it is rather safe for tourists and visitors.

We advise you not to overtly display precious items such as cameras or even a well-known brand of pocketbook because you may become a target for petty theft. Make an effort to fit in with the locals.

Getting around Louisiana - easy or not?

You don’t need to hire a car in New Orleans unless you’re planning extensive or far-flung travels outside the big tourist zones (although, okay, we recommend a few outlying sites). The town is flat, ultra-picturesque, and built for walking; taxis and adequate public transportation are plentiful.

The Costco Traveler Blog

A culinary tour of new orleans, diversity in action: new orleans vibes, more about new orleans.

Made up of many neighborhoods and districts, there is a lot to see and do across the city. The French Quarter is a charming and lively area that includes St. Louis Cathedral, Bourbon Street for restaurants and live music, and Café du Monde – one of the city’s most famous beignet shops. The Garden District’s walking tours show off the area’s well-preserved properties, surrounded by trees, climbing ivy and gardens. Downtown New Orleans includes the Superdome, Harrah’s Casino and Audubon Aquarium. Nestled next to downtown is the Arts/Warehouse District, which includes the National World War II Museum and the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, plus the Port of New Orleans’ Julia Street and Erato Street cruise terminals. Other notable districts: Gentilly (Jazz and Heritage Festival and horse racing), Uptown/Carrollton (Audubon Park and Zoo), Mid-City (New Orleans Museum of Art and above-ground cemeteries), Algiers (city-views and Jazz Walk of Fame), Marigny/Bywater (Frenchmen Street and nightlife), and New Orleans East (Fort Pike and Bayou Sauvage wildlife refuge).

Before You Go

  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
  • If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.
  • For complete and current safety and security information, including travelers' tips, public announcements, travel advisories and more, please visit the website of the U.S. Department of State at www.travel.state.gov.

Top Experiences

New Orleans City Park : More than 170 years old, this park is 1,300 acres and includes recreation, education, entertainment, sports and conservation. This area is definitely family-friendly, including an amusement park, Train Garden and a sculpture garden called Storyland.

New Orleans Museum of Art : Located at the southern end of City Park, this small but well-curated museum has over 40,000 works of art. Bonus: once you’ve had your fill of art indoors, head to the adjacent Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, which is free to the public.

National WWII Museum : Combining national perspectives and personal accounts, there is a blend of immersive exhibits and artifacts alongside oral histories and multimedia displays in this museum for World War II.

Jackson Square : One of the most photographic spots in the city, the park has Parisian-style landscaping dating back to the original design in 1851 and a view of St. Louis Cathedral. It is also a popular place to jump on a horse carriage tour.

St. Louis Cathedral : This could be considered the “heart” of old New Orleans. Just across from Jackson Square, you can take a tour of this Catholic church for a peaceful break from the busy city.

Mardi Gras World : See some of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into New Orleans’ most famous party. This warehouse hosts tours of floats that are under construction or repair, plus some authentic costumes for guests to try on!

Preservation Hall : An intimate jazz hall, it originally started as a art gallery with jazz musicians brought in to attract patrons. It hosts 45-minute-long performances in the evenings.

French Quarter : Famous for Bourbon Street, Mardi Gras and jazz music. Go for the architecture, stay for the restaurants!

French Market and Riverwalk shopping : In case of rain, head indoors for some food, fun and souvenir shopping. The French Market is great for local crafts and hot sauce samples, while Riverwalk is a multi-storied mall with more than 75 retailers.

The Best Beach Day Trips from Los Angeles

From Orange County to Carpinteria, these are the best places for a beach day near L.A.—all less than a two-hour drive from the city.

louisiana trip packages

Warmer weather and sunnier skies means that the season of beautiful beach days is upon us. Though Los Angeles is a coastal city, most residents live at least eight miles from the beach, and with L.A. traffic, getting from one side of the city to the other can feel like a mini road trip. On top of that, beaches in Venice and Santa Monica get way too crowded and congested, making a trip slightly more outside of town well worth it. From Orange County to Carpinteria, these are the best places for a beach day near L.A., all less than a two-hour drive from the city.

The Best Places for a Beach Day Near L.A.

Carpinteria, newport beach, laguna beach, manhattan beach.

  • 1.5-hour drive

Carpinteria is a quintessential California beach town, located just south of Santa Barbara . Without traffic, driving to Carp can take less than an hour and a half, making its renowned surf and clean shores a great option for L.A. locals looking to get away for a day. Though a beach picnic is never a bad idea, no trip to Carpinteria is complete without stopping by Little Dom’s Seafood for lunch. Indulge in freshly shucked oysters and their zesty fish piccata while dining, or grab a Margherita pizza to go. Enjoy a family-friendly and lively atmosphere at Carpinteria State Beach, or head to Rincon Point for premier waves and stellar surf.

  • 1-hour drive

Explore 10 miles of pristine coastline when you take a short drive down to Newport Beach . Situated about an hour south of Los Angeles, Newport Beach is a fun and upbeat beach town that attracts visitors from all over California. Whether you’re renting a Duffy Boat for the day or exploring Balboa Island, those seeking a more active and adventurous beach day will find plenty to do in this slice of the O.C. For Harbor views and delicious bites at sunset, pop by Topside Lido House Roof Deck . Topside is the only rooftop bar in Newport Beach and some can’t-miss dishes include the yellowtail ceviche, truffle fries and skirt steak quesadillas.

Laguna Beach is home to some of the most crystal clear and swimmable waters in all of California. The coastal, palm tree-lined bluffs set the scene for a picturesque beach day straight out of a romance movie. Though places like Crystal Cove State Park and 1,000 Steps Beach are stunning, the historic Victoria Beach Pirate Tower is a must-see site. There are also plenty of incredible tide pools in Laguna where you’ll find starfish, sea slugs and speedy hermit crabs. Treasure Island Beach is another local gem that tends to be less crowded and is best enjoyed at low tide. Before driving back to Los Angeles, stop by The Cliff Restaurant for 180-degree views, live music and fish tacos.

  • 45-minute drive

Despite being located within Los Angeles County, Manhattan Beach is a beloved South Bay community that has a small and charming beach town vibe. The steep, hilly streets and oceanfront townhomes make you feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of L.A., and it takes around 45 minutes to get here from most central parts of the city. The main strip of Manhattan Beach looks straight onto the pier, creating a picture-perfect scene for swimming, surfing or sunbathing. Longfellow Beach is another wide and sandy beach located right next door in Hermosa. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, sit down for coconut shrimp, steamed clams and mesquite-grilled Mahi Mahi at Fishbar .

Malibu is an iconic and affluent beach town on the outskirts of L.A. From A-list celebrity watching to renowned surfing, Malibu is one of the most popular beach day destinations for Angelenos looking to catch a tan away from the chaos of Venice and Santa Monica. Though some spots in Malibu get pretty crowded, there are so many different beaches to choose from, each catering to a different kind of beachgoer. Explore the epic sea caves at El Matador Beach and Leo Carillo or post up with a cocktail in hand in a cabana at Paradise Cove . If you want to be right in the heart of Malibu, take a stroll along Carbon Beach before heading to Broad Street Oyster Company for caviar and uni-topped lobster rolls.

Dana Point is the next-door neighbor to Laguna Beach, and can take as little as an hour and 15 minutes to reach from Los Angeles. Between its breathtaking marinas and its wide, sandy shores, Dana Point attracts both L.A. and O.C. locals all throughout the summer season. Looking to work up a sweat before hitting the sand? Hike through the Dana Point Headlands Conservation Area and take in the sweeping Pacific scene. Doheny State Beach is a haven for surfers, sunbathers and volleyball players, as is Salt Creek Beach. For the most epic sunset, bring a nice change of clothes and head to 180blu at the Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel for shared plates and refreshing drinks.

Measles spread to at least 3 other states after trips to Florida

By Alexander Tin

Edited By Paula Cohen

Updated on: March 22, 2024 / 6:01 PM EDT / CBS News

Measles cases that turned up in at least three states this year were linked to visits to Florida, federal and state investigators concluded, shedding light on some of the early infections that have fueled an uptick of the highly contagious virus .

Florida's health department thinks families of the cases earlier this year from Indiana and Louisiana may have crossed paths in the state, according to messages sent between local investigators and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through late February.

Louisiana previously said its first two measles cases this year in the New Orleans area had been linked to travel to another state, but declined to say which.

A patient in Ohio this year also was sickened by measles after visiting Florida. That infection had not been directly linked to the other two cases.

"As mentioned, we've had an Ohio case that visited [redacted] Florida as well as a case of our own in the region so definitely curious if there is a connection," Megan Gumke, an epidemiologist for the Florida Department of Health, wrote in a Feb. 21 email.

The emails were obtained by CBS News through a Freedom of Information Act request.

It is unclear if these measles cases are the same as those the Orlando Sentinel reported last month had been treated by local emergency rooms, in an adult and three young children.

A spokesperson for the Orlando Health system declined to comment, deferring to Florida's health department. Grant Kemp, deputy press secretary for the Florida Department of Health, said it would be misleading to highlight Florida as the epicenter between the measles cases, citing other states also reporting infections.

"When communicable diseases are identified in out-of-state residents, that information is transferred to the state where they reside and are not classified as a Florida case," Kemp said in an email.

The cases treated in Orlando were also "completely unrelated" to an  outbreak of measles at an elementary school  in  Florida's Broward County  earlier this year, Kemp said.

The initial case behind the Broward County cases was a 9-year-old child who had not been vaccinated due to a religious exemption, the emails say, soon followed by other suspected measles cases in unvaccinated students at the same school.

The child had not recently traveled abroad. Ultimately nine cases were  reported  in Florida's Broward County before state officials declared the outbreak over.

It comes as health officials have stepped up their plea for unvaccinated Americans to get a shot before international travel to protect against measles. The U.S. recently marked an unwanted milestone in this year's measles surge, with more cases in the first three months of 2024 than in all of 2023.

The CDC says cases have also been reported in Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York City, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington.

Among measles infections reported so far this year, the CDC said March 18 that 93% had been linked to travel outside of the country.

The agency also on March 13 updated its guidance for international travelers  to urge unvaccinated Americans to seek out a shot as early as six weeks before their trip abroad, for any traveler who is at least six months old.

No special vaccination guidance has been published for travelers within the U.S. to states with outbreaks.

The CDC continues to have longstanding recommendations for everyone starting at 12 months old to get vaccinated against measles. The MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella, has been widely used for decades and is safe and effective against the once-common illness.

Officials say the recent uptick in cases underscores the need to catch up on routine shots that were missed during the pandemic. But they also think it so far remains "nowhere close to" the kind of ongoing outbreaks that authorities feared could threaten the U.S. status of having eliminated the virus.

Vaccination rates in the U.S. will likely be enough to prevent a repeat of the deadly waves of infections that claimed hundreds of lives and hospitalized thousands of children every year before the vaccine. The measles virus was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, meaning the country was no longer seeing sustained outbreaks.

However, the agency has also warned that growing outbreaks abroad and gaps of immunity within the U.S. left some communities vulnerable to measles spread.

"Given currently high population immunity against measles in most U.S. communities, the risk of widescale spread is low. However, pockets of low coverage leave some communities at higher risk for outbreaks," the CDC said.
