The perfect itinerary for an epic USA roadtrip (48 states at once)

Do you like roadtrips? They happen to be a very American tradition and we found the perfect itinerary to visit every state in the continental USA during 1 epic roadtrip. A great trip idea for those who have a lot of time but want to stay closer to home .

Personally, I love roadtrips and I hit the road as much as I can, despite also being an aviation geek: you can like both, right? What matters is traveling and seeing new places , no matter how.

So here are the maps and details of the 2 itineraries that allow you to see all the lower 48 states at once, depending on your travel preference.

Basics of the 2 epic USA roadtrip itineraries

The USA is a huge country, almost as big as Europe (it’s even larger than Canada when considering land area alone).

So the USA has a lot of variety in terms of landscapes, but even in terms of culture too (even if many who aren’t from the country don’t realize that).

If you aim to eventually visit every state, any 1 of these 2 itineraries is a great way to almost all of them at once. The only 2 states you’ll have left to visit after this roadtrip will be Hawaii and Alaska.

There’s a version for national parks and points of interest and a version for cities.

usa road trip travel agent

I’m on the quest to visit all 50 states myself (in addition to also visiting every country obviously), and I’m not doing too bad with 47 already.

But let’s just say it would’ve been much quicker to get to 48 at once with this roadtrip instead of having to do it over dozens of trips.

Here are the details.

48-state roadtrip – national parks/points of interest version

Here’s a map of the 1st itinerary.

usa road trip travel agent

It was conceived by American Ph.D. student Randy Olson, on  his blog , and it was done scientifically to optimize the routing: each stop represents a national park or a point of interest.

So you’re not just seeing every state, you’re seeing cool parts of every state (which sadly wasn’t our case in North Dakota during our very random 1200-miles-nonstop-in-2-days Flytrippers roadtrip across the Midwest just for fun).

Good times. Roadtrips always make for great stories.

Anyway, the itinerary has also been optimized to be as efficient a route as possible to see all 48 states, so you can rest assured you won’t be wasting any time.

If you only stop to sleep, you can complete this roadtrip in only 9 days, but we recommend taking at least a couple of weeks to explore all these places obviously.

And gas is significantly cheaper in the US in case you were wondering. You can start anywhere, it’s a continuous loop, and it passes through many spots near the Canadian border.

You can even take a shortcut from Michigan to Vermont through Canada, as the stop in Cleveland is only to keep Americans without a passport from crossing into the Great White North.

Here is the complete list of all 50 landmarks (48 states + Washington, DC + a bonus stop in California):

1. Grand Canyon, AZ 2. Bryce Canyon National Park, UT 3. Craters of the Moon, ID 4. Yellowstone National Park, WY 5. Pikes Peak, CO 6. Carlsbad Caverns National Park, NM 7. The Alamo, TX 8. The Platt Historic District, OK 9. Toltec Mounds, AR 10. Elvis Presley’s Graceland, TN 11. Vicksburg National Military Park, MS 12. French Quarter, LA 13. USS Alabama, AL 14. Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, FL 15. Okefenokee Swamp Park, GA 16. Fort Sumter National Monument, SC 17. Lost World Caverns, WV 18. Wright Brothers National Memorial Visitor Center, NC 19. Mount Vernon, VA 20. White House, Washington, D.C. 21. Colonial Annapolis Historic District, MD 22. New Castle Historic District, DE 23. Cape May Historic District, NJ 24. Liberty Bell, PA 25. Statue of Liberty, NY 26. The Mark Twain House & Museum, CT 27. The Breakers, RI 28. USS Constitution, MA 29. Acadia National Park, ME 30. Mount Washington Hotel, NH 31. Shelburne Farms, VT 32. Fox Theater, MI 33. Spring Grove Cemetery, OH 34. Mammoth Cave National Park, KY 35. West Baden Springs Hotel, IN 36. Abraham Lincoln’s Home, IL 37. Gateway Arch, MO 38. C. W. Parker Carousel Museum, KS 39. Terrace Hill Governor’s Mansion, IA 40. Taliesin, WI 41. Fort Snelling, MN 42. Ashfall Fossil Bed, NE 43. Mount Rushmore, SD 44. Fort Union Trading Post, ND 45. Glacier National Park, MT 46. Hanford Site, WA 47. Columbia River Highway, OR 48. San Francisco Cable Cars, CA 49. San Andreas Fault, CA 50. Hoover Dam, NV

These are all very enticing attractions, for the most part. It seems I’ve only seen 14 of those, so maybe I should hit the road again after all.

How about you? Tempted?

48-state roadtrip – city version

Here’s a map of the 2nd itinerary.

usa road trip travel agent

If you’re more of a city slicker, the map’s author has created a 2nd version that routes you through amazing cities instead.

It is slightly shorter but quite as impressive: it makes you go through the “Best City to Visit” in each state, according to TripAdvisor .

But you won’t have all the lower 48 states, unlike the other itinerary. That’s because no city in Vermont, West Virginia, or North Dakota made the top 400 cities to visit ranking, unfortunately. So plan on making a few extra detours if you want to hit all states at once with this version of the itinerary.

Here is the complete list of all cities:

  • Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
  • Wichita, Kansas
  • Denver, Colorado
  • Albuquerque, New Mexico
  • Phoenix, Arizona
  • Las Vegas, Nevada
  • San Francisco, California
  • Portland, Oregon
  • Seattle, Washington
  • Boise, Idaho
  • Park City, Utah
  • Jackson, Wyoming
  • Billings, Montana
  • Sioux Falls, South Dakota
  • Omaha, Nebraska
  • Des Moines, Iowa
  • Minneapolis, Minnesota
  • Milwaukee, Wisconsin
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Louisville, Kentucky
  • Columbus, Ohio
  • Detroit, Michigan
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Manchester, New Hampshire
  • Portland, Maine
  • Boston, Massachusetts
  • Providence, Rhode Island
  • New Haven, Connecticut
  • New York City, New York
  • Ocean City, New Jersey
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Wilmington, Delaware
  • Baltimore, Maryland
  • Washington, D.C.
  • Virginia Beach, Virginia
  • Charlotte, North Carolina
  • Charleston, South Carolina
  • Orlando, Florida
  • Atlanta, Georgia
  • Nashville, Tennessee
  • Birmingham, Alabama
  • Jackson, Mississippi
  • New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Houston, Texas
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Branson, Missouri

I do a little better on this list, with 31 already visited. You can see I love cities. How about you?

Hello Andrew, the PHD student suggests in the 1st Itinnerary that the one stop to make in Washington State is the Hanford Nuclear Reservation?! Flat out, that is a terrible idea. It is in the middle of nowhere, I am just shocked it’s mentioned. Out of all the beautiful and amazing places to see in such a diverse state as Washington, a Nuclear Site was chosen? Surely this student could have done so much better. Thank you for allowing comments.

' src=

Having been all around the Olympic Peninsula, I agree that’s there are better stops. But my understanding is that he really optimized for the quickest way to do all 48 and had to choose a point of interest that wasn’t too far off that optimal path, hence that choice (I think).

' src=

thanks for sharing this information with us.

' src=

I have taken a road trip from California to the the most northeastern part of theUS. west Quaby light house. it was my 1st trip across the us. .I seen so many amazing places.

Quite the drive for sure! Must have been epic.

' src=

Why do Americans always think the Statue of Liberty is in NY? it is in NJ. I’ve done road trips now that have taken in 39 states. Here’s a quiz to see how well you know the USA: Which state has only one syllable? Only one city has been name-checked on the moon. In which state is it? Which is the most Northerly of the contiguous states? In which state were Tennessee Williams and Elvis Presley born? Which was the last of the contiguous states to be admitted into the USA? Which four states all share a border with each other? Which state has the lowest population? Twelve cities are name-checked in “Get Your Kicks on Route 66” but only three states. Which? Which state has the longest name? Which two states have the most borders with other states? In which state is the geographical centre of the USA – and which one if you exclude Hawaii and Alaska? Which of the states of the USA has respectively the most Northerly, Southerly, Easterly and Westerly points?

' src=

The official Statue of Liberty address is Liberty Island, New York, NY, 10004.

' src=

Wow, these comments are very rude for no reason. Thanks for the article, maybe when I graduate from college I’ll consider hitting part of one of these itineraries.

' src=

“it’s a huge country (even larger than Canada when considering land area alone).”

Canada – 3.855 million mi² USA – 3.532 million mi² Where does this math fail you?

Where did reading fail you :P? It explicitly says “ when considering LAND area alone ” The quote you copied literally has a link provided under “even larger than Canada” and if you read that, it explains how Canada is only larger than the US due to water area being counted 🙂

' src=

There is no stop in North Dakota on the city version. You should stop in Fargo after Billings and before Sioux Falls

' src=

I’m 46 years old .. I have been to all 50 states and I’m 17 away from all 50 twice .. I have driven to 47 .. flown to Alaska, Hawaii and Washington..

Wow! That’s impressive :O

' src=

This is awesome

' src=

This is inspiring! Thank you for sharing!

' src=

“this roadtrip in only 9 days“ is extremely false statement. It is only 9 days if you are driving non stop, no breaks to even get out of your car, get gas, or actually see these places. From start to finish drive time it is 225 hours, 16 minutes = 9 days. Wow. Take some time to enjoy the view.

Yes, that’s what we said too 😛

' src=

Thanks for the tip 😊

' src=

Do you know the total distance of this itinerary? At what moment of the year doing this trip would be the best? Thanks!

Hi! It is 13,699 miles (22,046 km) for the landmarks itinerary and 12,290 miles (19,780 km) for the city version. You can even have the Google Maps links on the creator’s original post (I’ve reposted the link below). As for the timing, I guess it depends on your preferences, but I’d want to avoid that top half of the country (so half the itinerary) in the winter for sure! http://www.randalolson.com/2015/03/08/computing-the-optimal-road-trip-across-the-u-s/

' src=

Crappy itinerary! Does not even include Zion National Park… and so many stops in the North Eastern states?? Nobody cares about those places except maybe a couple of places.

As explained, the PhD student who built the itinerary wanted to have one stop per state, and there are many states in the North-East so that’s why there are many stops there. I agree that Zion is an iconic spot, but his goal was also to optimize a routing that was as short as possible so that’s why it’s billed as an itinerary to see all lower 48 states at once and not an itinerary to see *the best spots*. But those interested in doing this can definitely adapt it and add many interesting stops for sure 🙂

' src=

Curtis, you are crappy. Obviously this is meant as a guide that can be adapted to add spots. I think it’s awesome.

Best family vacation ever!

Before working with Vessy, our experiences going to the beach and staying in resorts were pretty average - too noisy, bad room, waiting too long to check in, bad food, lack of good activities for children, etc. Not to mention, figuring out and arranging all the details ourselves was so overwhelming and daunting. Working with Vessy has completely changed our concept of a family vacation. She always asked us the right questions and understood exactly what we needed. She went above and beyond to arrange every detail (like making sure we had a proper child seat in the shuttle from the airport). Unlike our previous vacations, everything went so smoothly this time around, and we are looking forward to getting Vessy’s help again for our next vacation!

We experienced more of Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons with this tour, than we would have on our own. We enjoyed meeting new people, seeing all the sights, and not having to worry about driving and directions. Be prepared to do a lot of walking/hiking - but it is worth it!
Had a wonderful time - a lot of hiking, seeing the sites in Alaska and viewing the Northern Lights.

Let These Companies Plan Your Next Road Trip

As many of us opt to hit the open road this year, there’s an easier way. why not have someone else figure out where you’re going to stay and what you’re going to do along the way.

Let These Companies Plan Your Next Road Trip

Whether you want to focus on food, fun, history, or nature, these companies can customize an itinerary for you.

Back in the day, before my husband and my kids, I was the most easygoing traveler (I swear). Any old accommodation would suffice, as long as it was relatively clean. When I took a road trip, I’d make a rough plan, but part of the fun was going with the flow and making unplanned stops along the way. Then, I had kids. Young kids, in particular, don’t really go with the flow so well. Or at least they don’t go with your flow. They have their own flow, involving naps and diaper changes, frequent snacks, and early bedtimes.

Given my band of not-so-easygoing travelers, when luxury vacation club Exclusive Resorts and custom road trip planner All Roads North invited me to test their new custom luxury road trip itineraries, my first instinct was to give them an out—I offered to sub in someone who doesn’t have tiny tots. But to their credit, they were up for the challenge even if I wasn’t sure I actually was. Ultimately, we decided to go. I mean, who better to gauge a tailor-made road trip experience than working parents with two kids under four (the latter being the ultimate ruthless critics)?

The first step was laying the groundwork. From its portfolio of 400 global properties, Exclusive Resorts reserved a beautiful three-bedroom villa in Santa Rosa, California, the pièce de résistance of which was the pool overlooking the vineyard. The house alone (really the pool) already put us in very good shape to win major points with the junior judges.

Exclusive Resorts members have access to private residences and villas such as this one in Sonoma County with a private pool overlooking a vineyard.

Then, a representative of All Roads North called to discuss the itinerary. After relaying what our typical daily schedule is (afternoon nap around 2 p.m., bedtime around 8 p.m.), All Roads North got to work plotting out the activities. And before I get into precisely what those activities were, I’ll just say this—they nailed it.

Our first night was unplanned, which was perfect. Our friendly masked concierge Dona (an Exclusive Resorts stay includes a concierge who helps guests settle in and takes care of any personal requests) welcomed us with a tour of the house and a fridge stocked with some grocery store items we had requested (eggs, milk, cheese, wine). We had ordered takeout dinner on the way to the house and were able to settle in and just relax and enjoy the pool. The next morning, per our custom itinerary created by All Roads North, we headed off to Toluma Farms and Tomales Farmstead Creamery , where the kids had so much fun petting the goats and chickens and jumping on the property’s trampoline, while their folks were thrilled to indulge in the exceptional cheese plate that ended the site tour (with required masks for all, except while eating the cheese).

On the second night, Exclusive Resorts arranged a private chef dinner through Vine Dining . Our personal chef (who wore a mask the entire time) was accommodating and understanding when we asked if we could squeeze the dinner in between bedtimes. A mother herself, she remained calm, cool, and collected as she prepared our over-the-top meal while we navigated the chaos of putting our little one to bed, settled our older kiddo in with a movie, and tried to prepare for what would be our first fine-dining experience since before the pandemic.

I actually had to hold back some tears as she set down the first (and my favorite) dish of tuna crudo with avocado wasabi, kumquat marmalade, and a ponzu reduction. Next came a ramen noodle carbonara, Akaushi bistro fillet, and finally, buttermilk panna cotta with minted strawberries and shortcake crumble, all paired with delicious wines. It felt as though I was in a dream.

Amid a pandemic, private dining is a safe way to experience fine dining.

Amid a pandemic, private dining is a safe way to experience fine dining.

The next morning we took it slow and eventually made our way to Meadowood Napa Valley , where we experienced the resort’s new wine education course, then had lunch and took a dip in the pool (always need to keep those wee tagalongs happy). Meadowood had recently been added to Exclusive Resorts’s hotel collection and the experience (and others like it) is something the company offers to clients. Sadly, one week after our visit the property was damaged in the Glass Fire and is now temporarily closed (with plans to rebuild and reopen in the future).

The experience we had was uber-luxurious (details below), far beyond what we are accustomed to. But what struck me even more than the luxury was how nice it was to truly let go of the planning and hand over the reins to someone else. When it comes to trip planning, I am admittedly often a control freak, or what I like to call a “martyr control freak” (the worst kind)—I decline help (because I can do it better of course) and then am annoyed that no one is helping. This custom road trip experience forced me to not decline for once. It felt so great to give in. The heightened stress, anxiety, and added responsibilities many of us are experiencing during the pandemic make relinquishing control all the more rewarding. This here tired working mom of two littles truly appreciated the break.

Companies that offer custom road trip experiences

As numerous travelers and families have turned to road trips to satisfy their wanderlust this year, several companies have stepped in to help them plan and execute truly incredible journeys. These are three of the options if you want someone to plan a curated road trip for you.

Exclusive Resorts + All Roads North

Exclusive Resorts and All Roads North will set up custom experiences for clients such as outdoor winetastings.

Exclusive Resorts and All Roads North will set up custom experiences for clients such as outdoor winetastings.

The high-touch, uber-exclusive, and totally catered to your needs experience that Exclusive Resorts offers in partnership with custom road trip provider All Roads North is no small investment. Exclusive Resorts is a membership-based vacation club. There’s a one-time initiation fee of $150,000 for a 10-year membership, or $250,000 for a 30-year membership, as well as annual dues of around $20,000 to $40,000 to have access to between 15 and 30 days of lodging (which comes out to about $1,395 per day). All Roads North typically charges a $500 planning fee, which has been waived for Exclusive Resorts members. The planning services include an introductory call to figure out what the members are interested in doing and seeing, and an initial sketch of the trip, followed by a detailed proposal (that covers how much all the activities and inclusions will cost) accompanied by a finalized custom itinerary guide outlining the entire road trip.

While All Roads North tackles all the excursions, outings, tastings, and fine-dining experiences, Exclusive Resorts offers the accommodations and a concierge (who welcomes you and who you have access to via their personal cell phone) to make sure that your stay at your luxe residence is complete—the concierge can order groceries ahead, book private chef experiences, and also help with local reservations for parks and attractions. There are many additional perks and inclusions (for example, members have access to preferred pricing from companies like private car service provider Savoya, yachting club Barton & Gray, and private jet provider Sentient Jet). Members are invited to exclusive events where they can meet other members and exchange travel tips and experiences.

CrushGlobal is a travel company founded by travel journalist Kristin Braswell. The company recently launched eight road trip guides across the United States with routes that stretch from Northern to Southern California, from the Northeast to the South. Examples include the Southern Food and History Guide (which includes a guided tour of the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.), the national park–centric Northern California Outdoor Escape, and the Southern California Coastal Wine Lover’s Road Trip for the oenophiles out there. These are pre-set travel guides that you can purchase online starting at $30 each.

CrushGlobal can also create fully customized road trip itineraries that cater to travelers’ specific interests and budgets. The company sends a questionnaire to travelers to get a sense of what they want to see, eat, drink, and experience on their trip and, based on the responses, will set out to create a personalized road trip agenda. For this service, the fee begins at $299.

To build these curated trips, the CrushGlobal team has partnered with unique accommodations such as a stand-alone tree house in a California forest, or a bed-and-breakfast in the heart of Atlanta. They also work with well-known chefs, restaurateurs, sommeliers, and vineyards to offer unique and private dining experiences to guests. Examples include a wine and food pairing in a Sonoma Valley vineyard and a private cocktail flight prepared by two mixology experts in Charleston.

The focus for both the guides and the custom itineraries is on following COVID-19 safety protocols while also supporting minority-owned businesses in each destination. Braswell said that she created these inclusive road trips to provide her audience with an alternative way to travel, support local travel and tourism partners, and highlight Black- and POC-owned businesses along the routes during the pandemic.

Imagine a road trip where you only stay at luxury hotels and resorts. That’s the concept behind Marriott International’s new partnership with the luxury concierge company Quintessentially. The companies have handcrafted several itineraries throughout the United States and Europe where clients stay at properties in Marriott’s luxury portfolio, which includes the Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, the Luxury Collection, Edition, and W Hotels.

Here are a few examples:

  • “Country to Coastal California,” which includes stays at the Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe; the Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco; and the Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay. The itinerary features kayaking and a private boat trip on Lake Tahoe, a private seaplane ride over San Francisco, and surfing and horseback riding in Half Moon Bay.
  • “Best of the Sunshine State,” with stays at the Miami Beach Edition; the Ritz-Carlton, Naples; and the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota. Experiences include an Everglades airboat excursion, a private seaplane flight from Miami to Key West, a sunset sail around Naples, and an electric bike tour of downtown Sarasota.
  • “The Rockies,” featuring accommodations at the Ritz-Carlton, Denver; the Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch; and W Aspen. This itinerary includes hiking the Boulder Flatirons and the Vail backcountry (with a llama), fly fishing in Vail Valley’s Eagle River, and a starlight dinner on Snowmass Mountain.
  • “Rancho Mirage to the Sonoran Desert,” with stays at the Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage; the Phoenician, a Luxury Collection Resort, Scottsdale; and the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain. Horseback riding along the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation, mountain biking in Palm Springs, and experiencing a classic cattle drive in Scottsdale, are all on the agenda.

The road trips start at $15,000 for two guests and include all experiences. >> Next: The 14 Best Road Trips in the U.S. to Take in 2020

Today we plan over 100 trips per year, from rustic camping to resort style luxury camping.  Every trip is as unique as the people who are going on it.

We take pride in being a family run business and best rv trip planner.  Norm and Joan have been RVing for over 50 years and have traveled the US extensively.  Today, they spend about 200 nights each year in their RV.  Their passion for RV travel was passed on to their oldest daughter, Kim, and their son, John, who spent many vacations exploring the US and the outdoors.

Years later, they did the same with their grandkids.  The family legacy continues on to Tamara and Steven, the 2 oldest grandkids, who today assist in planning customer trips. We believe that with 3 generations involved in the planning process, every member of your family is considered.

We have no doubt that RV Adventure-USA is the perfect choice for planning your next RV trip. We look forward to hearing from you!

It is possible to enjoy a USA road trip all year round, depending on the region you are travelling to.

For a Western USA road trip for example, peak season is from mid-July to mid-August . That is also when there are the most travellers on the road and prices are at their highest. It is also possible to travel in winter ( mid-December to mid-March ), but it is important to note that some destinations, such as the Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon, may even see snow.

Travel in Florida is enjoyable all year round but be aware that hurricane season is from August to October.

Driving in the U.S.

It's a good idea to learn about the American highway code before setting out on your USA road trip .

And our blog article " Driving in the U.S ." contains useful information, driving tips and some things you'll need to watch out for when driving in the land of Uncle Sam.

When should I book my trip to the U.S.?

For your road trip to California or elsewhere in the U.S., it is best to book at least 6 months in advance .

To be sure of availability, or to at least make sure that the top attractions are not sold out, you need to book early. For some destinations, such as the American West , many travellers book up to 1 year in advance .

Availability isn't the only reason to book in advance. The earlier you book, the more you save.

So there is really no good reason to wait until the last minute to book your trip to the U.S.!

Visit our " When should I book my trip? " section to find out more.

How do I choose between a road trip by car or by RV?

Should you take to the American roads in a rental car or RV ? There is no wrong answer.

Contrary to popular belief, it's not necessarily cheaper to travel by RV.

Check out our " Car vs RV " section to help you make an informed choice!

Is There a Drawback to Using a Travel Agent for Your Next Trip?

N ow that summer is getting closer, you may be in the process of planning your big vacation for the year. And in that regard, you have options. You could do your planning on your own, or you could turn to a travel agent for help.

TravelAge West recently cited a survey by IBS Software showing that travel agent use is on the rise. And 38% of millennials and Gen Zers are opting to use travel agents as opposed to booking their vacations digitally.

Featured offer: save money while you pay off debt with one of these top-rated balance transfer credit cards

You may be inclined to use a travel agent for your next vacation. But should you?

The benefits of using a travel agent

Travel agents have the potential to help you save money . For example, a travel agent might manage to snag you a more favorable room rate at a hotel they have a relationship with. They might also manage to score you a credit you can use on your next cruise for things like drinks.

Plus, when you use the services of a travel agent, they're the ones in charge of worrying about all the details. They can also, in some cases, help you map out an itinerary that helps you make the most of your destination. And they might know things about your destination that you don't, allowing you to get off the beaten path and enjoy a meaningful trip.

The best part about using a travel agent? Generally, their services are free. Because of this, you might assume that using a travel agent is really a no-brainer. But there could be some hidden drawbacks.

The pitfalls of using a travel agent

In many situations, it makes sense to use a travel agent. But there are some drawbacks to be aware of.

For one thing, booking a trip through a travel agent might cost you more if that agent steers you toward a more expensive property. They may be more inclined to do this if it results in a larger commission for them.

So for example, let's say you're traveling to Aruba and are looking at a resort that normally costs $450 a night. Your travel agent may be able to get you in at $400 a night, which seems like a great deal. But there may be another comparable resort down the road that only charges $375 a night to begin with. Your travel agent, however, may not recommend that resort if it results in a lower commission for them.

Also, you may have been banking credit card reward points for an upcoming trip. But a travel agent may not be able to help you redeem those points. In that case, rather than getting a portion of your trip for free, you're paying out of pocket in full.

Finally, some travel agents are more responsive than others. If you get stuck with someone who's not so great at getting back to you, you may find that using a travel agent is an overwhelmingly frustrating experience.

What should you do?

If you're taking a pretty straightforward trip and are visiting a destination you've been to before, then you may decide to book your plans solo, especially if you have credit card rewards you want to cash in. Remember, too, that you may be able to eke out some savings during your trip by using a travel rewards credit card when dining out or booking activities.

On the other hand, if you're traveling someplace new and you don't want to stress over the details, then it could be wise to use a travel agent. You may want to get recommendations so you don't get stuck with someone who's tough to reach.

Also, if you decide to use a travel agent, be clear about your budget from the start. If you can't swing more than $4,000 for your vacation, say so. That way, your travel agent hopefully won't push you to book plans that are beyond what you can afford.
