Sam has a variety of basic moves. While running and jumping are obvious skills, his ability to climb makes him able to reach new heights. And with his free diving skill, he can explore the underwater passages of the deep sea.

The world of Sam's Journey is not only a visual one. Every scenery that Sam traverses on his journey comes with its own unique song that emphasizes the location's atmosphere.

Is the comment regarding the incompatiblity of the cartridge with EF or Ultimate still valid? Or is there (now) a way to run the cartridge (with saving) on physical hardware?

I've bought this game directly on the Protovision website a while ago. And as it's already mentioned many, many times: This game is simply marvelous!

in a few words the best c64 platform game by far, I mean it!!! 10/10 in graphics, animation,  sound Fx, catchy background music, pixel art, and playability superb... so fun to play with,  you won't find a game like this, just advice, you better get a box version, worth every dollar, this jewel deserves to have a physical copy!!! go for it!!... BTW I´m waiting for another outstanding new game from you guys!!

It is not an excellent game, it is a super excellent game. More than 5 I would give it 20 stars, the music, the levels, the gameplay, there is nothing to say, this game is unbelievable, I already won it and I will play it again, it is unique, a game like very few there are. in the world so good and so well done congratulations

If you own a commodore 64 you can't miss the best C64 platform ever. Wonderful graphics, Amazing music, extremly playable. There was never in C64 history such a beautiful game.

This game is amazing! By far the best platformer on the C64. Ever. So fast. So smooth. So playable. Fantastic level design. Clever little puzzles. You should never say never. But doubt this platformer will ever be improved upon.

This is a brilliant game !!! Since we're in the process of building the MEGA65 we are constantly looking for software to challenge our machine. Sam's Journey is definetly such a game ! It runs directly out-of-the box on the MEGA65. There is nothing we could criticize. So colorful graphics, a constantly changing, very lovely soundtrack, a fast-paced, addicting game. This is by far, the best Jump'n Run we've ever seen on the Commodore 64. That's why we are so happy, that it runs so smooth, in PAL and NTSC on the MEGA65. (I would say, it pushed The Great Giana Sisters from it's throne). Everybody from the team fell in love with it immediately. The game came, in a beautiful designed box. you can see the love for detail in every single piece. The white cartridge, the small treasurechest, the cards. It is worth every single cent ! Sam's Journey is a perfect example of a modern game, programmed for the C64 to support and revive the 8-bit charme of the 80's era ! It squeezes the last bit out of our beloved breadbin and doesn't need to fear a comparisson with modern jump'n runs ! To conclude: Sam's Journey goes perfectly hand-in-hand with the MEGA65 and will be one of our showcase games, when presenting the MEGA65 ! A must have for every C64/C128/MEGA65 owner ! Heel leuk spel echt een aanrader het is spel is best mooi getekent voor een C64 en je hebt er best een aantal uren speel plezier in het spel is ook goed speelbaar de kaarten met de karakters van sam is ook erg leuk bedacht bovendien zit er ook een mooie schatkist bij met kristalen. als je dit spel besteld is de verzending ook best snel. MiSTer FPGA – Sam’s Journey / Commodore 64 [REU]

Sam’s Journey is a recent release for the C64, and is without a doubt one of the best games I’ve played on the platform so far. The production values are stellar here, in an adventure that is heavily influenced by Super Mario 3 and Mario World, yet still manages to carve out it’s own unique gameplay loop. Powerups are plentiful and fun to use, and the stage design/secrets are well crafted. I went into this expecting a bog standard Euro-platformer, and was pleasantly surprised that it is much more.

The game doesn’t force you to collect a bunch of meaningless items if you don’t want to, which gives you the choice to play as either a completionist or just cruise through the levels and see the ending if you’d prefer. Good thing they have saving included here, because this is a long one! Even if you are just rushing through the levels, I’d guess it will take at least two hours to complete. They really wanted to make an epic platformer for the C64, and delivered something special here.

Note: I’m using 5x integer scaling for this video to fill the screen better. This generally works well with C64 games. I went with a narrow HV integer aspect also, to better match the image I saw on CRT while playing. Without that change, the game was a bit wider on HDMI than the analog image. Could just be a quirk with the NTSC version.

Game description: Sam’s Journey sees you play the role of Sam who wakes up in the middle of the night to investigate noise coming from his wardrobe when he is all of a sudden pulled in by a giant claw, waking up in a strange new world. Your task is to guide Sam through 30 levels across 3 world maps to help him find his way back home. The game levels are littered with a vast array of enemies who are all set on stopping Sam from continuing his journey across the worlds. You will need to utilise switches, trampolines, hidden passages, owls and collect keys to make progress through the various levels and figuring out how to use all of these items in the right place or right way provides the main challenge within the game. Special costumes can be picked up throughout the worlds which change Sam’s appearance and give him special capabilities. Pirate Sam can attack enemies with his cutlass, Ninja Sam can cling to walls, while Disco Sam can do a spinning twist that allows him to stay in the air longer during jumps. Costumes are also useful in that they provide a layer of protection from enemies, so that lives are not lost after just one hit (think Sir Arthur’s armour in Ghost’n’Goblins). However, Sam can only wear one costume at a time, so choices need to be made as to whether you swap your existing costume whenever you come across another. In addition to trying to get Sam back to safety, the game also contains collectible diamonds, coins and trophies as an additional challenge to collect them all with the goal of obtaining an overall score of 100%. This is not an easy task as the games features a number secret sections that are not necessarily hard to unveil but they are not so obvious and will require you to be somewhat inquisitive.

To refer to Sam’s Journey as a good game would be an understatement. The overall presentation and gameplay is nothing short of wonderful. Sam’s Journey features smooth and fast free-directional scrolling that overwhelms the visual and audio senses with with spectacular colour and detail, accompanied with a bouncy soundtrack that varies based on the game setting location.

Moving Sam around his new world is a pleasure. Sam is somewhat versatile with his ability to run, jump, climb, swim and pick up large items to throw at enemies. The enemies are very well defined and all having differing movements or behaviours which means that eliminating them will often require different approaches. The inclusion of the costume pickup is a really clever feature of the game that introduces strategy element in so far as trying to determine the best costume to tackle a boss battle or a puzzle.

As Sam’s Journey contains over 30 hours of challenging gameplay, I am thankful that the game features checkpoints placed throughout all the levels, which allows the game to be played and completed over multiple gaming sessions but I do wish that Sam had more than on life as it can get frustrating trying to overcome some sections and having to go back to checkpoints rather than continuing from where you died. I would also prefer that checkpoints were not triggered automatically as there are times through out the game where I did not want to restart from certain points in the event that Sam ‘lost’ his life. A similar criticism can be applied with walking past costumes, I would have preferred to have been given the choice to accept a new costume rather than have it automatically applied.

Minor issues aside, Sam’s Journey is a technical marvel that delivers equally when it comes to gameplay.  The Knights of Bytes have displayed their talent and passion to deliver the best C64 game in 25 years and a game that I will most likely revisit many times again.

It is not a perfect game and I am not exactly a fan for the game console style of play that influences the game but it does set a high benchmark for all future games developed for the C64 and should be enjoyed by all C64 gamers alike.

Protovision, the C64 game publisher is cooperating with Knights of Bytes to release Sam’s Journey for TheC64-mini.

Sam’s Journey was one of the most expected games and has been received with high praises for every  retro media outlet . The adorable platformer is so good that I believe it could be on any modern platform as is and it would still be a blast!

According to Protovision’s press release  “The THEC64-mini version also permits the user to jump by the means of the control keys while previously this was only possible by “joystick up” due to lack of options in the THEC64-mini firmware as well as loading routines of the floppy disk. Both issues have been solved by now.”

The special version is now part of the download packages in the Protovision shop as well as on  itch.io . It is also available free of charge to previous buyers by renewed download.

Indie Retro News awarded Sam's Journey game of the year 2017 as this game really surpassed all our expectations, delivering us a huge epic adventure that really pushed the limitations of the C64. Well it's the NES's turn to be a part of this incredible gaming experience, as we have been informed by Knights of Bytes, that this amazing game originally for the C64, is now available for the NES!

Arrivata ieri la cartuccia e provato subito , fantastico ,grafica e animazione superba , velocità impressionante ...questo fine settimana lo giocherò di sicuro fino in fondo. Voglio prendere pure la versione per C64 ma per adesso è esaurita :(

As predicted the c64 music rules supreme, and for some reason I'm find it harder to catch ladders in this version...not sure why. But other than that we have some slightly more responsive controls and ever so slightly zippier action...still a great great game and I look forward to 100%ing it in the near future...well worth the wait.

where is the NTSC famicom (J) /nes (US) revision ? too shame the game is only nes PAL !
