blue lagoon iceland travel packages

Our travel guide includes everything you need to know before visiting the Blue Lagoon, Iceland. Is the famous Blue Lagoon worth visiting? How much does it cost? When is the best time to take a dip? What to pack or how to get there? We've summed up all practical information for your ultimate day in this Iceland Blue Lagoon blog post.

When doing pre-trip research on the best tips and must-visit places in Iceland, it almost seems that no trip is complete without visiting the Blue Lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon Iceland images are everywhere, and it is hard to avoid discussing it with other travelers you'll meet in the country.

The milky-blue water, photogenic bridges, and renowned spa experience are reasons to put this artificial attraction on your bucket list.

To be honest, at first, we were quite reluctant to visit the Blue Lagoon.

We were not sure whether the experience was worth it for travelers like us, who do not splurge often, and first of all, who under normal circumstances get bored when sitting in the water and doing nothing in less than fifteen minutes.

On top of that, there are quite a lot of free hot pools scattered around Iceland, which are perfect for  budget travelers  like us, which was a fact that also made our decision process harder.

But our departure date was coming closer, and we realized that we actually did not have a plan what to do on our last day in Iceland.

Therefore, the idea of giving the Blue Lagoon a chance, and the thought, of spending the day in one of National Geographic's 25 wonders of the world slowly crept in.

At the end of the day, as travel bloggers, we are often torn as we do not want to skip such popular places.

The reason is not surprising.

We want to bring a genuine experience to you, our reader, who might be expecting us to visit attractions such as the Blue Lagoon, and use this post for planning your own  Iceland itinerary .

Even though we cannot see everything, we felt that the Blue Lagoon, one of Iceland's best attractions, deserves our attention.

And we knew that later, we would have regretted it if we had not visited this amazing hot pool.

So when we were exploring Reykjanes Peninsula , we booked our ticket for a specific time slot for the next day.

From this point, there was no way back, and Martin and I were inevitably on the way to explore the famous Blue Lagoon.

Keep on reading if you are planning your visit or still hesitating whether the Blue Lagoon is worth your time and money.

In this travel guide, we share with you everything you should know before visiting the Blue Lagoon, including practical tips.

We will also answer all your burning questions such as how much the ticket costs, when to go, or where to stay while there.

So, is the Blue Lagoon overhyped tourist attraction, or is it really that great?

Let's find out.

What is the Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is the most visited paid attraction in Iceland .

Well, most of the natural attractions in the country are free of charge, so we think this statement is not that relevant.

In our opinion, the Blue Lagoon would have been one of the most visited attractions in Iceland anyway.

Even though hot pools set in geothermal areas in Iceland are often natural, it is not the case with the Blue Lagoon.

What is the Blue Lagoon, then? It is a geothermal spa, and its soothing water is known for its healing powers.

If you want to see more geothermal areas in Iceland (no swimming, though), then don't forget to visit Geysir Geothermal Area and Namafjall Hverir Geothermal Area .

Why is the Blue Lagoon Blue?

So why is Blue Lagoon so famous and stands out among others? The most natural explanation is the color of the water.

The contrast of the black lava fields and steaming milky blue water is very eye-catching, and we believe it is one of the reasons why the visit is so relaxing.

Blue Lagoon attacks all your senses.

One of the most common questions is why is the Blue Lagoon blue.

When you examine the water of the lagoon closely, you will find out that it is rather white than blue.

So what is the trick? And is the Blue Lagoons' water naturally really that blue?

The answer and the myth behind this hot pool are quite straightforward.

The Blue Lagoon is rich in silica, which is the most abundant element, and silica reflects visible light while other colors are absorbed.

That's why the color is bluer when the weather is nice and sunny.

History of the Blue Lagoon

Before visiting the Blue Lagoon, we knew very little about the place and its history.

Had we read a few articles, we would not have been that surprised by seeing a geothermal power plant right next to the pool. Yes, you hear it right.

In fact, the creation of Blue Lagoon was an unintentional side effect of runoff water from Svartsengi Power Plant (1971) - it is the power plant you can see today next to the world's renowned spa.

Iceland is known for utilizing geothermal energy for almost everything, as it would be a shame not to use this valuable resource coming out off the ground.

Svartsengi Power Plant drills deep in the earth to get access to the hot water.

It has a small flaw, though. The water contains minerals, plus it is mixed with seawater.

Therefore, this drilled water cannot be used, but people found a solution - this water heats freshwater, and this super-hot water warmed up by saltwater then generates electricity.

Once the water is used, it is released to the lava field that surrounds the power plant as there is no other use for it.

And this is basically how the first pools around the power plant appeared.

It did not take long, and people started noticing the side effect of the plant, and one desperate man who wanted to treat his psoriasis (skin disease), decided to take a bath.

His condition improved, and from this point, the Blue Lagoon started to be a sought-after attraction back then by locals only.

The first bathing facilities at Blue Lagoon opened in 1987.

And even though a lot has changed since then, for example, the whole complex was modernized, and it was even moved a bit further from the power plant, one important thing remained.

The healing waters rich in silica.

Sure, people can object that the Blue Lagoon is far from its original idea when people from  Reykjavik  and its surroundings were coming to enjoy natural baths in lava fields, and they are not wrong.

Thanks to the fact that the number of visitors to Iceland has been growing dramatically in the past years, the concept had to change.

On average, around 4000 people visit the Blue Lagoon daily during the high season, so the changes were necessary.

But what we could see, the Blue Lagoon was delicately rebuilt to satisfy the needs of its visitors, while it still provides everyone with the main reason people came for.

The milky blue water and relaxing atmosphere.

Blue Lagoon Facts

Do you want to know learn more about the Blue Lagoon?

Except for what we've already mentioned, that the lagoon is artificial, here are some interesting facts.

The water temperature fluctuates a bit, depending on where you stand. In general, the water temperature in Blue Lagoon is between 37°C to 40°C.

Before the Blue Lagoon, we visited the natural  Reykjadalur Hot Springs Rive .

And we must say that the temperature here in the Blue Lagoon was more pleasant as the natural river was hotter than we expected (no complaints, though).

The water is rich in minerals, especially silica, salt, and algae - you can put on a mask including those minerals.

The Blue Lagoon was featured in many commercials and marketing spots.

The maximum depth of the Blue Lagoon is 1.6 meters.

Therefore, kids must be accompanied all the time, and they must use floaters (you can rent them at the desk).

Entrance Fee

What was the main reason that discouraged us from visiting the Blue Lagoon at the beginning?

It was the price. Yes, visiting Blue Lagoon is a quite expensive activity.

We know that travelers who like pampering and visiting spas around the world are probably used to paying for this kind of service at similar prices, but the cost of the visit seemed to us quite high at first.

The Blue Lagoon ticket price is dynamic, as it changes depending on the date and time of the day.

So how much does it cost to visit the Blue Lagoon?

Generally, the Blue Lagoon entrance fee is between 42 USD and 171 USD.

As you can see, the best you can do is check out the time slots every now and then, as the difference is quite big.

There are three types of tickets to choose from, and it is only up to you what kind of service you require and what is your  Iceland budget .

Unsurprisingly, we opted for the cheapest ticket.

Still, it included everything we needed, and when we were leaving the Blue Lagoon, we had a feeling that the quality and service we received for our money was adequate.

It is good to know that you must reserve your ticket in advance for an exact date and exact time.

You can stay in the lagoon as long as you want, but when you book your visit, for example, for 9 AM, you must show up between 9 AM and 10 AM.

We do not recommend entering the facility without a reservation.

First of all, your desired time slot might not be available, and your experience won't be that smooth from the very beginning.

Here is the list of the three ticket options you have - choose the one that suits your needs best.

Comfort Ticket

Blue Lagoon Comfort Ticket is the most basic one, but according to our experience, it offers more than enough.

What is included? Entrance to the Blue Lagoon, silica mud mask, towel, and a free drink.

The starting price was 42 USD, but on the day of our visit, the price was already 49 USD.

The price probably increases when the demand is higher for a particular time slot.

We really enjoyed one drink that was included in our entrance fee.

Otherwise, alcohol in Iceland is very expensive, and you will pay 10 USD per beer minimum.

You might be wondering how you will pay for the refreshment in case you want another one.

You will get an electronic bracelet with a chip at the entrance, which you can tie around your wrist.

Then everything you purchase is loaded on it, and you will pay at the exit before you leave.

It is also good to know that it is allowed to purchase a maximum of three alcoholic drinks per visit because of safety and hygienic reasons.

Here you can purchase Blue Lagoon Comfort Ticket in advance.

blue lagoon iceland travel packages

Premium Ticket

Premium ticket includes everything that Comfort ticket does, but on top of that, you can enjoy the second mask.

You will also get slippers, a bathrobe, a table reservation at Lava Restaurant, and a glass of sparkling wine in Lava Restaurant, but only in case, you are going to dine there.

We do not think that slippers and bathrobes are worth paying an additional twenty plus dollars.

Therefore, we would have opted for this choice only in case you plan on dining in the restaurant.

Here, you can purchase your Blue Lagoon Premium Ticket with Transfer in advance.

The Retreat Spa

As the name suggests, this is the best ticket you can get in the Blue Lagoon, which ensures your visit will be truly luxurious.

If you have the cash to spend, celebrate a special occasion, or saved enough money for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, this is the option for you.

The ticket includes five hours of exclusive entry to Retreat Spa, Blue Lagoon, a private changing room, the Blue Lagoon Ritual, skincare amenities, and a drink of your choice.

Choosing the ticket really depends on your Iceland budget and travel style , and there is no pressure to upgrade the ticket if you don't want to.

Opening Hours

Blue Lagoon is open from 9 AM to 9 PM from January to May.

In June, it's open from 8 AM to 10 PM.

The opening hours from July to August are 8 AM to 11 PM.

In September, from 8 AM to 10 PM.

And lastly, it's open from 8 AM to 11 PM from October to December.

Keep in mind that you should leave the lagoon 30 minutes before it closes.

And don't forget that the Blue Lagoon can be closed for a few days every year due to maintenance, usually in the off-season.

When is the Best Time to Visit the Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is open year-round, and no kind of weather should stop you from visiting the site, as we believe the place is magnificent even when it rains and hails.

Iceland sees most travelers in the summer, between June and August, so be prepared for lines near the entrance and slightly crowded facilities during these months.

On the other hand, the possibility of prebooking and limited time slots are here to prevent the lagoon from being crowded beyond its limits.

Here you can find the best time to visit Iceland .

Blue Lagoon in Summer

What is the only difference between visiting the Blue Lagoon in summer and winter?

Summer guarantees long days and slightly higher temperatures, and you have a better chance to enjoy sunny weather (but the weather in Iceland is a chapter on its own).

Blue Lagoon in Winter

The only downside of visiting in the winter is the bigger difference between water temperature and air temperature.

You will feel a bit uncomfortable outside the lagoon, but the water temperature will sit between 37 and 40 degrees, the same as during the rest of the year, and we do not expect you to walk around the lagoon anyways.

In winter, you have a unique chance to observe Nothern Lights from the Lagoon when lucky, which must be awesome.

Time of the Day

When it comes to the time of the day, the best time to avoid the procession of visitors is right when the Blue Lagoon opens, around 8 AM.

If you get up early, you might even be the first person in the lagoon that day!

During the day, the Blue Lagoon fills up, and the busiest times are between 11 AM and 3 PM.

Visiting the Blue Lagoon later in the evening is not a bad idea either. The only downside is that you won't have that much time for your relaxation because of the closing time.

Having said that, we arrived in the Blue Lagoon around noon and did not have a feeling that there were that many people.

As there is a small screen displaying the layout of lockers at the entrance, 52% of men's lockers were occupied on that day, to be precise.

The area is large, and people usually disperse.

How Much Time Do You Need for Visiting the Blue Lagoon

On average, we would say that it is absolutely enough to allow yourself two hours for the Blue Lagoon.

However, the time every traveler needs for visiting the Blue Lagoon is highly individual.

In two hours, you'll have enough time to explore every nook of the lagoon, use the sauna and steam room, have a beer, and relax for a while.

We spent in the lagoon a bit more than three hours, but it was mostly because we were waiting for our late evening flight and had nothing better to do.

If you've purchased your Luxury ticket or Premium with dining in the restaurant, you will, of course, need at least half of the day to enjoy all the perks.

But even without upgraded tickets, we know that people are able to spend in the lagoon a whole day - that's why how much time you need to allocate really depends on your preferences.

How to Get to the Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon is located near Grindavík, a small town on Reykjanes Peninsula. Yes, you hear it right.

The Blue Lagoon is outside the capital city of Iceland, Reykjavik, although it is not far.

The Blue Lagoon is within driving distance from Reykjavik or Keflavik International Airport .

Therefore, many travelers visit the Blue Lagoon either right after they arrive in Iceland, or it is their last activity before dropping the car off at the airport.

We also planned the visit to Blue Lagoon for our last day, but our Go Campers rental office was in Hafnarfjordur.

So from the lagoon, we drove there, dropped off the car, and then we took a bus to Reykjavik, where we spent the rest of the day.

So how do you get to the Blue Lagoon?

The easiest way how to get to the Blue Lagoon is by your rental car or campervan .

You can get there either from Keflavik Airport, Reykjavik, or any other location on your itinerary.

Blue Lagoon is 24 kilometers southeast of Keflavik Airport and 50 kilometers southwest of Reykjavik.

Finding the Blue Lagoon is easy.

Simply enter Blue Lagoon in your GPS and then follow the instructions.

If you are used to following the road signs, look for Bláa Lónið, which is the Blue Lagoon in the Icelandic language.

There is a large free parking at Blue Lagoon right in front of the entrance.

Get a 5% discount on Go Campers by using our unique promo code: " laidbacktrip ".

A shuttle bus runs between Reykjavik and the Blue Lagoon all day, which is very convenient.

You might be interested in whether there is a shuttle between Keflavik Airport and Blue Lagoon, but it seems that there is not this kind of service anymore.

I even called the Blue Lagoon hotline, and they told me that their official bus also runs only between their facility and Reykjavik.

Here, you can reserve a Blue Lagoon Return Transfer that runs every hour.

Public Transport

Unfortunately, at the moment, there is no public transport between Reykjavik or Keflavik and the Blue Lagoon.

Even though there is a bus to Grindavik, the Blue Lagoon is still eight kilometers from there.

Therefore, it is not convenient, and taking a cab from the settlement would cost you quite a lot too.

In case you do not have your car and taking a shuttle is not the right option for you, there is always the possibility to take a cab.

Taxis are quite expensive in Iceland (like everything).

On the other hand, this transport is a hassle-free alternative that does not require much planning.

This Private Blue Lagoon Transfer will take you from Keflavik Airport or Reykjavik to the Blue Lagoon or vice versa.

blue lagoon iceland travel packages

The Blue Lagoon is one of the most popular things to see and do in the area.

It is quite natural that many tour companies have incorporated it into their itineraries.

There are three popular options right now, Reykjanes Peninsula , Fagradalsfjall Volcano, and the Golden Circle , all of them including Blue Lagoon.

Here you can book a Golden Circle Tour that includes the entrance ticket to the Blue Lagoon as well.

This Fagradalsfjall Volcano Hike and Blue Lagoon is also very popular.

The lagoon is on Reykjanes Peninsula, so it only makes sense to explore this area a bit more thoroughly.

Here you can take a Reykjanes Geopark Tour that includes Blue Lagoon.

What to Pack for the Blue Lagoon

You do not have to pack many things for visiting the Blue Lagoon.

A towel is included in the ticket; the same as shampoo, soap, and conditioner are provided in the shower.

So the only essential thing you should not forget is a swimsuit .

Lockers are reasonably large (there are also bigger lockers in case you have extra-size luggage for a fee), so you can fit there all your clothes, backpack, and valuables.

It is a good idea to buy a waterproof case for your phone, in case you plan on taking photos, just in case.

If the Blue Lagoon is the last place to tick off from your itinerary, take with you a dry sack , where you can later store your wet swimsuit before the flight.

Also, do not forget to apply sunscreen on your face and upper body.

Flip-flops are not necessary, and in case you booked the upgraded ticket, slippers are included.

Also, if you are looking for some packing tips, read our guide on what to pack for Iceland .

Tips for Visiting the Blue Lagoon

Here are some additional things every visitor should know about Blue Lagoon.

Photography

You can take photos in the Blue Lagoon. For obvious reasons, photography is not allowed in the changing rooms and showers.

Take a Shower

When we were reading things to know before visiting the Blue Lagoon, many people seemed to be disgruntled by the fact that every visitor to any spa in Iceland must shower naked before entering the lagoon.

Well, to be honest, we do not know where the problem is.

We do the same in the Czech Republic in every public swimming pool. It is not enforced by law, though. It’s just common sense.

In Iceland, when entering pools without showering, you basically break the law. And we are actually glad they are so strict about the pool ethics and hygiene.

How to Protect Your Hair

One of the big themes when visiting the Blue Lagoon is how to avoid damaging your hair.

The water is rich in silica, and it is recommended to cover your hair in a hair conditioner (it is available in the shower, together with shampoo and soap).

When you have long hair, you should twist it up and, if possible, keep it away from water entirely.

Martin and I did not take it that seriously.

We used the conditioner, but we both inadvertently dipped our hair during our visit.

Yes, later, even when I rinsed my hair, it was a weird feeling.

I also took a shower right after we arrived in Prague (we visited the lagoon on our very last day in Iceland), and it was normal again.

I must premise that I am not crazy about my hair. I do not color it and go to a hairdresser like once a year.

Still, I would not be worried that Blue Lagoon water would cause you any serious damage to most visitors.

The easiest way to protect your hair in Blue Lagoon is to cover your hair in a conditioner, avoid dipping your head into the water and swim more carefully.

Or just buy a swim cap .

Contact Lenses and Dioptric Glasses

When we were checking-in in the spa, the receptionist told us to take off contact lenses and do not even go inside with our dioptric glasses.

When we told her that we were both short-sighted without it, she told us to be careful and make sure the water did not get in our eyes.

If you have the same problem with your eyes as we do, no worries.

If you are careful, nothing will happen. I wore my sunglasses to prevent splashes, and everything was fine.

It is important to know that you should keep all your jewelry in the locker as the water may cause serious damage to it.

How to Visit the Blue Lagoon: Our Step by Step Experience

Visiting unfamiliar and modern facilities can sometimes be confusing.

With our step-by-step guide, you will exactly know what to expect from the Blue Lagoon experience, from the very first moment until the end.

We parked our campervan on the designated parking lot and followed the signs to the Blue Lagoon entrance, leading through the lava field.

Once we were inside, we could see two lines. One line was for Comfort ticket holders, while the second one was for those who bought an upgraded ticket.

We waited in the queue for less than ten minutes, and then we were greeted by a friendly receptionist.

She scanned our ticket (it is enough to have an online version on your mobile phone), gave us a wristband that serves as a key for lockers and as a medium to pay for drinks, and she navigated us to changing rooms.

Changing Rooms

Ladies' changing room was on the ground floor, while men's was on the upper floor.

The changing room is very modern, and the only thing you must do is to find and open the available locker.

Put all your clothes and valuables inside, shut it, and lock it with your wristband at the nearest scanner.

And then only remember the number of your locker. Easy peasy. In the worst case, there is always someone from the staff who can help you with it.

Then continue to the showers (without swimsuit), dress your swimsuit after a shower, and then you can finally get to the Blue Lagoon.

Clean towels are by the entrance to the lagoon, but we took them later on the way back to the showers.

Blue Lagoon

From now on, it is only up to you how you will spend your time.

After entering the wonderfully blue water and walking around a bit to get an idea of what it looked like, we headed to the left to apply a mask that was included in our ticket.

Then Martin went to a locker room to grab a camera to take some photos while I was enjoying the hot water.

After he took a few pictures, he joined me, and we went to the right side of the lagoon to the bar.

With a drink in hand, we carefully crossed the lagoon and found seats in the least crowded part of the lagoon.

The rest of the day in the Blue Lagoon was the mixture of sitting in the warm water, walking slowly around, and enjoying the sauna and steam room.

As we were in  Myvatn Baths  as well, we must say that sauna here in the Blue Lagoon was quite a disappointment.

Do not take us wrong, the room itself was great.

The only problem was that it was Saturday, and on that day there were many families with kids, and they were all the time entering the sauna and steam room, so there was no chance to warm it up and relax.

After approximately three hours, we were ready to leave.

We grabbed a towel and went to the showers, where we carefully rinsed silica and other minerals off our bodies, dressed again, and waited for each other by the exit.

Here we gave the wristband to a receptionist, she scanned it to find out if we purchased something, and we were ready to go.

Travel Insurance

We never leave home without travel insurance that was designed to cover our expenses if something goes wrong during the trip.

Travel insurance protects against theft, flight delays, injury, illness, cancellations, and much more.

World Nomads provides travel insurance for travelers to cover their trip essentials, including sports and adventure activities.

SafetyWing is affordable travel insurance for backpackers, long-term travelers, and digital nomads.

Travel smarter and safer!

blue lagoon iceland travel packages

Except for floating in the warm and healing waters, it is possible in the Blue Lagoon to dine, take a massage, or shop.

Restaurants

Even though we would recommend you bring a snack after seeing the prices, you can choose from four restaurants.

Cafe, where you can buy a snack and refreshment.

Then there is Spa Restaurant which is available for those who purchased the most expensive ticket.

Lava Restaurant that offers fantastic views over the Blue Lagoon, and you can dine here in your bathrobes until a certain time in the afternoon.

Last but not least, there is Moss Restaurant, which is a pride of the resort as it is recommended by Michelin Guide.

Free Drinking Water

When you are thirsty, and you have already used up your one free drink, there is a free water fountain under one of the bridges in the lagoon, where you can drink for free!

Massages and Treatments

If you love pampering yourself, book either an in-water massage, regular massage, or beauty treatments.

This service costs extra, and it is highly recommended to make a reservation.

If you are looking for an original gift from Iceland, or you simply like quality cosmetics, you can buy products from the bioactive elements of geothermal seawater.

The shop is either on-site, but you will find one at the airport and then in the center of Reykjavik.

Where to Stay

As we've already mentioned, Blue Lagoon is located in Grindavik, a small town on Reykjanes Peninsula, but most of the people visit it either from Reykjavik or Keflavik Airport.

So, where is the best place to stay before or after visiting the Blue Lagoon? What is the best hotel near the Blue Lagoon?

Everything here depends on your budget as the selection is quite large, especially in Reykjavik.

Grindavik offers quite reasonably priced hotels, Hafnarfjordur, which is on the way to Reykjavik, also has hotels for every type of traveler, and there is one hotel super-close to the airport.

And then there are two hotels that belong to the Blue Lagoon that offer superb services, and the location for visiting the lagoon and enjoying the atmosphere possibly could not be better.

We've handpicked the best hotels in every location you can consider for your Blue Lagoon visit.

Blue Lagoon | The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland - Even though there are two hotels near the lagoon (the other one is called Silica Hotel), The Retreat is the shining star here. If you want to spend a night in a hotel set in a unique landscape, this is the place. Just be prepared that your wallet might cry.

Grindavik | Guesthouse Borg - Simple but clean guesthouse offers everything a traveler needs, very close to the Blue Lagoon, for a fair price.

Keflavik Airport | Airport Hotel Aurora Star - Conveniently located within walking distance from the airport, this modernly decorated hotel is a perfect choice in case you arrive early in the morning or wait for a late flight.

Hafnarfjordur | Hotel Viking - Flybus stops in front of this hotel, so it is for many travelers choice number one in the town.

Reykjavik | Midgardur by Center Hotels - Close to all top attractions, this hotel offers its guests amazing services. Except for comfortable beds and a tasty breakfast, you can relax in an on-site spa.

Is the Blue Lagoon Worth Visiting?

Even though we were quite worried that we might not enjoy our time in the Blue Lagoon as we are not exactly spa people, we really liked it.

Indeed, we do not have many similar experiences to compare with, but overall we found the price we paid for the entrance and the services we received in return, fair.

No matter whether you are after a long flight , you need to kill some time before coming back home, or you are longing to visit the Blue Lagoon just for the spa experience and relaxation, we are pretty confident you are going to enjoy it.

Hopefully, our Blue Lagoon guide helped you with planning your visit, and you found out everything you needed to know before traveling to the Blue Lagoon.

What people love about blue lagoon tours.

Had a great time, beautiful sightseeing (including Northern Lights 4 times), fun group of people and very knowledgeable tour guide!

Blue Lagoon Iceland Reviews: The Premium Package

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 16/02/2024

The Blue Lagoon is at the top of the list for most visitors to Iceland. This well-instagrammed Iceland lagoon is very busy for good reason – it offers a unique and immersive experience.

There are quite a few options on the Iceland Blue Lagoon website – but how do you decide which of the Blue Lagoon Iceland prices and packages are right for you when visiting for the first time?

I feel well placed to provide one of the Blue Lagoon Iceland Reviews as I have actually been there three times. Make sure you read the section on the Blue Lagoon Massage.

All Blue Lagoon Iceland Reviews will tell you that it gets VERY busy. So when it comes to when to book the Blue Lagoon spa in Iceland do it at least a month in advance.

When you book you need to nominate a time. If you nominate say 1 pm you can then enter anytime between 1 and 2 pm. There are separate queues at reception for pre-book vs on arrival and for the different package types.

⇒ Book the Blue Lagoon

  • 1. Blue Lagoon Iceland Reviews – Blue Lagoon Restaurants

Table of Contents

2. Blue Lagoon Spa Review – the Packages

3. blue lagoon premium package – the experience, 4. blue lagoon iceland premium package – the facilities, 5. something special – blue lagoon massage, 6. getting there and away, tips on seeing the northern lights:, boutique hotels near the blue lagoon:, getting to iceland and getting around:, who paid for what with this post.

There are 2 options for lunch at the Iceland Blue Lagoon. There is the Blue Lagoon café and then the Blue Lagoon Lava restaurant.

The café at the Blue Lagoon is like a typical sandwich-type café with pre-prepared sandwiches, sushi, drink etc.

The Lava Restaurant is the more upmarket option. As part of my Blue Lagoon Reviews, I highly recommend having lunch here.

Lava Blue Lagoon is a beautiful restaurant – decorated in a stylish Icelandic fashion. It also has large glass panes so you can see the lagoon.

But most importantly the food at The Lava restaurant is absolutely delicious. This was one of my favourite meals on my trip to Iceland .

Entrance to Lava Restaurant at the Blue Lagoon

The Lava restaurant at the Blue Lagoon Iceland has a short a la carte menu or a good value (for Iceland) set menu option.

For 6600 ISK you can have 2 courses and a glass of prosecco. 3 courses are 7700 ISK.

We went with the 2-course option and that was more than enough. After ordering the waiter brought out the most delicious and warm bread options – 2 per person.

These are served with this amazing skyr butter which sits on a black pumice stone (which I initially thought was black bread). These rolls and the butter were amazing.

bread rolls with skyr butter at the blue lagoon lava hotel

I then enjoyed the langoustine soup which was absolutely delicious. This was followed by the lamb – a lamb fillet and a lamb shoulder served with sunchokes, carrots, pickled red onion and thyme. This was also fantastic. We were all full to bursting.

Langoustine soup at the lava restaurant blue lagoon iceland

Due to our schedule, we had lunch first and then visited the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. This can easily be done the other way around.

In my opinion, the Blue Lagoon Premium Package definitely provides the best experience at the Blue Lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon gets busy and the premium package provides access to the fast queue. After checking in, I received a plastic wristband to indicate which package I had booked.

This is also linked to the credit card you used to book so you can order more drinks etc once in the Iceland Spa Blue Lagoon. You will then receive a towel, a bathrobe and flip flops (you can keep the flip flops).

These are all things that you will be pleased to have once in the locker room.

Shop at the Blue Lagoon Iceland

The premium package at the Iceland Blue Lagoon Spa also includes a free drink at the in-lagoon bar (this includes alcohol as well as skyr smoothies) and extra algae face mask in the lagoon. The premium package costs 10200 ISK per person.

There are 2 cheaper options – standard and comfort – but they lack the bathrobe and flip flop. When it comes to the Blue Lagoon comfort vs premium packages, in my opinion, the premium offers better value and a better experience.

There is then a mega deluxe luxury option which is for 2 people and includes a private changing room etc. There are quite a few more Blue Lagoon spa reviews online which you may want to read to help you in making a decision.

⇒ Currently Planning your trip to Iceland? Check out this great post on an Iceland Itinerary that helps you plan a trip between 4 days and 2 weeks.

The Blue Lagoon is quite big. The temperature fluctuates quite a bit throughout this lagoon in Iceland – although it is from quite warm to very warm.

On the edges near the rocks, you can pretty much sit down so these are good places for a rest. As you enter the lagoon the Blue Lagoon bar will be ahead of you to your right.

The bar has great skyr smoothies, soft drinks, wine, beer, and prosecco. You are allowed a maximum of 3 alcoholic drinks per wristband. You can also buy the waterproof iPhone cases at the Blue Lagoon bar.

The bar in the Blue Lagoon Iceland

Opposite the bar is the face mask bar. Everyone has access to the standard white mud mask. You put this on for up to 10 minutes and then take it off using the water in the lagoon.

There is also a lady swimming around in the cutest bathing cap you have ever seen who offers up a blue lagoon scrub. If you have bought the premium Blue Lagoon package you can then return to the face mask bar and get your algae mask – another 10 minutes.

The Blue Lagoon massage area is just behind the face mask bar (see further down this post for details). There are also some little bridges nearby. If you go under these bridges there is a hard warm waterfall that is great for the neck and shoulders.

There are also several steam rooms and a sauna (these involve getting out of the lagoon but are very nearby).

Bridge over the Blue Lagoon Iceland

It is then nice to wander the entirety of the Blue Lagoon. As you head away from the main entrance to the lagoon you will go under a bridge that has a cold water fountain of a type to help keep you hydrated.

It is hard to say the ideal time to stay in the lagoon as it is very much a personal choice. The first two times I went to the Blue Lagoon I spent maybe an hour in the lagoon.

The most recent I was with 3 girlfriends and we ended up in there for about 3 hours and ended up with serious prune fingers.

I will just review the women’s change facilities at the Blue Lagoon. When you come into the changing area there is a long corridor.

Along the corridor are little open areas with lockers and a low seat for changing. If a locker is open and empty it is for you.

The wristband you have been given will lock and open your locker. Store your shoes outside of this area. Put on your bathers and your bathrobe and flipflops as if you were going to any pool.

You are then asked to wash without bathers before getting in the pool. The good news for my more modest readers is that there are individual shower cubicles.

The blue lagoon is not great for your hair. In your pre lagoon shower apply the special conditioner in every stall to your hair. You absolutely can put your hair in the water.

However, make sure you used the conditioner both before and after your time in the Blue lagoon or you will have very dry hair for a couple of days.

The Blue Lagoon Iceland with people in it from a distance

It is then possible to enter the Blue Lagoon from the inside (there are loads of hooks for hanging your robe etc) or from the outside (again more hooks).

Each hook is numbered so you can keep track of where you put your towel and robe.

A key question, of course, is how do you take photos in the blue lagoon ? Well, you can take your camera and or phone into the lagoon which many people do. Of course, the hand holding it will need to stay above the water.

The other option is to buy a waterproof case for your phone. These are on sale at the in Blue Lagoon bar and were very popular. I chose to take my iPhone in quickly for a few snaps and then leave it with my robe.

The robe does not have pockets so I used one of the plastic bags provided for wet bathers and tied this up with my robe.

blue lagoon algae and rocks up close

It was, of course, the same process in reverse on the way out. There are benches and seats provided with good forceful hairdryers as well as cotton pads etc.

There is a chute next to these where you can put your used towel and bathrobe.

On the way out of the Blue Lagoon, you will go through a security area to exit. Just tap your wristband.

Part of the console will then open up. Place the wristband on the console and then the barriers will open.

If you are looking for something different for yourself or someone you care about definitely check out the Blue Lagoon massage option.

If you would like to try the Blue Lagoon Massage you must pre-book or you will most likely miss out. There is a special private area behind the face mask bar. This is where you will meet your masseuse at the appointed time.

blue lagoon rocks and water

Now full disclosure that I did not have one of these – but we bought the Blue Lagoon Massage for the girlfriend I was with as a birthday present and she loved it.

And we did try to check her out during the massage as it is all outside. She was placed on a lilo type piece of rubber and then covered in warm wet towels.

The Blue Lagoon massage covered head, hands, feet as well as shoulders etc and she raved about it. Everyone else coming out looked very happy. I’m not sure there is anywhere else in the world that offers an in lagoon massage.

⇒ For another special experience in Iceland read my post on the amazing experience that is Inside the Volcano Iceland.

The Blue Lagoon can easily be reached from Reykjavik or from Keflavik airport.

Many people visit the Blue Lagoon on the way to the airport eg on their last day. I have done this option twice.

Bring all your luggage and get on the shuttle bus from your hotel to the blue lagoon. This takes about 30 minutes depending on how many hotel stops.

⇒ Book your transfer from Reykjavik to the Blue Lagoon

When you arrive at the Blue Lagoon one of the first things that you will see is a luggage storage area. You can then put your big case etc in here.

Once you have visited the Blue Lagoon you can then take a shuttle bus to the airport. This bus takes about 25 minutes.

blue lagoon iceland left luggage area

It is also possible to visit the Blue Lagoon on arrival into Iceland by taking a shuttle bus from the airport, storing your luggage and then heading into Reykjavik.

The Blue Lagoon is also an easy day trip from Reykjavik – back and forth on the shuttle.

Finally, we had stayed in Hella the night before our Blue Lagoon visit on my third trip. It took just under 2 hours to drive to the Blue Lagoon.

We checked into the Northern Light Inn by 1115 and then got the 12 pm shuttle bus to the Lagoon. This is a great Blue Lagoon Iceland hotel option.

⇒ Read my post on the Best Iceland Northern Lights Hotels

The Northern Light Inn Iceland

We had lunch booked for 12 pm at The Lava Restaurant. This took about 1 ¼ hours for 2 courses.

Next, we checked in at 115pm and got into the Blue Lagoon. We stayed in the Blue Lagoon for quite some time. I got on the 1715 shuttle bus back to the Northern Light Inn.

We stayed the night there and then drove to the airport in the morning.

Travel Expert Tip – Best time to Arrive at The Blue Lagoon: As I have noted several times the blue lagoon gets very busy. Reception at The Blue Lagoon is at its peak on the hour as this is the basis of your ticket. If you arrive at say 15 minutes past the hour you will find much shorter queues. This will not impact on how long you have in the lagoon as you can stay for as long as you like.

It is also possible to experience the Blue Lagoon at night. On my fourth trip, I plan on exploring this option as I imagine it will be much emptier and could be more magical in the dark.

There is also, of course, the option of having dinner at the lovely Lava restaurant. If you have done this do comment below on how you found the experience.

⇒ Read my Top 10 Iceland Travel Blog Tips

Another great website site I found for Iceland tips and loads of great tour and self-drive options is Tourism Iceland .

And this great post from Beer and Croissants with loads of fab deta il

And if you are looking for the Northern Lights – and who isn’t – check out this app and site:

⇒ a fantastic phone app to take photos of the Northern Lights

⇒ Northern Lights Forecasts

There are two boutique hotels within walking distance of the Blue Lagoon. The first is the Northern Lights Inn . I stayed here and really enjoyed.

The food is good and I saw the Northern Lights. They have a wake-up call system for the Northern Lights which is critical.

⇒ Compare prices & read reviews on TripAdvisor ⇒ Book Now

The second option is the newly opened The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland . This is a very premium experience and it looks amazing. Drop me a line and tell me what it is like if you stay.

The only other options close by are guesthouses . The next option is to stay in Keflavik which is only about 10km away. Two interesting looking options here are Hotel Keflavik and the Hotel Jazz.

Lamb with potatoes and lettuce on a plate at the Lava Restaurant Blue Lagoon Iceland

Keflavik Airport is the main international airport in Iceland. It is located about a one hour drive from Reykjavik (depending on traffic) and is only about half an hour from the Blue Lagoon.

Keflavik Airport is in the southwest of the country. This is why most visitors tend to visit the Blue Lagoon on the first or last day of their trips. I think it is a great way to end a trip.

⇒ Flights to Reykjavik

Without question, the best way to see Iceland is to Hire a Ca r.  Not only will it save you a fortune it is the best way to see most of the sites that Iceland has to offer.

Most of the key sites are free eg the sites on the Golden Circle tour so if you have a car costs drop dramatically – especially if you are with a group. Let’s face it you need a car to see a ring road which is a key feature of Iceland.

You completely forgot to mention the Silica hotel, also part of the Blue Lagoon complex but situated about 600 moeters away. It has its own lagoon, very private. Have visited several times although they now, prior to COVID-19 had just about doubled the price per night. Still if you want the "premium experience" this is worth every penny or ISK

Ian thanks so much for adding in that comment - as you can see in my post I have been to the Lava restaurant but wasn't aware that there was a hotel there as well. I will be checking it out on my next visit - whenever that may be! :-)

What transportation did you book to get from your hotel on your last day to the blue lagoon and then onward to the airport?

Saturday 2nd of June 2018

Hi Crystal. I hired a car and used it to get to the northern lights inn. From the northern lights inn to the blue lagoon they have a shuttle bus. Having said that it is only about a 5 minute walk! To get to the airport from the Northern Lights Inn I drove and returned the hire car. However, the Northern Lights Inn also offers a shuttle service to the airport. And it is often included in the room cost so make sure you ask. Good luck and enjoy amazing icleand!

Day 3 - Nature of Iceland

Today is a day for more adventure. With so much on offer in Iceland, we're offering you three spectacular options depending on what you prefer to see and experience.

Option 1 - Take a private tour of the Golden Circle, Iceland's most famous sightseeing trail. Along this route, you'll get a taste of the dramatic and diverse nature of Iceland. On this 7-hour trip, you'll make a stop at the beautiful Thingvellir national park, which sits in the section between 2 continental tectonic plates (North American and Eurasian). Rich in color and wilderness, Thingvellir national park offers breathtaking views of waterfalls, lakes, and the famous Silfra fissure rift, which has been a popular diving and snorkeling site for visitors wanting to delve into the depths of the rift between the two continents.

Next, you'll head to the Geysir geothermal area. Here, you'll walk among the steaming vents, mud pots, and hot springs in a strong mist of geothermal smells stimulating your senses. The crowning feature of this spot is the spouting hot spring named Strokkur. This incredible force of nature erupts towering spouts of boiling water up to 66 ft (20m) every 5-10 minutes. So keep your camera ready!

Your final stop on this Golden Circle tour will take you to the mighty Gullfoss waterfall. This magnificent waterfall is fed by the glacier meltwater of the Langjokull glacier along the Hvita river, where the waterfall cascades down 105 ft (32m) in 2 parts, thundering down into the carving valley below. If you're lucky enough, you may even get the chance to see a rainbow climbing up from the top of the falls while you feel the powerful mist in your face.

Option 2 - Take a private tour of the wondrous and enchanting South Coast of Iceland. On this 10-hour tour, you'll venture past mountains, glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls, and black sand beaches.

You'll start the day picked up by your private guide, who will take you out of the city and into the rural nature of Iceland, answering all questions along the way. You'll first stop at the spectacular waterfall of Seljalandsfoss, which you'll see from the road. Here, you'll get the unique opportunity to walk behind this famous waterfall through a perfectly formed cavern that appears around the back.

Next, you'll head straight to the next waterfall, Skogafoss, which you'll be able to get up close to or take the adjacent stairs to the top and take in an extra perspective of this incredible waterfall. Rich in folklore, Skogafoss is said to host a mighty treasure hidden in the chasm behind its thunderous waters.

After this, you'll visit the stunning yet eerie Reynisfjara black sand beach. Walking out onto these shores is a surreal experience, with the towering basalt rock formations of Reynisdrangar out in the water, known in folklore as a tale of 2 trolls turned to stone by the light of the rising sun having failed to find refuge when investigating a shipwreck. Make sure you explore the volcanic hexagonal caverns that decorate the shoreline. It is the perfect nesting place for the birds steering clear of the powerful roaring waves.

Option 3 - Take a private tour of the richly diverse Snaefellsnes peninsula. Due to its variety of terrains and landmarks, this peninsula is often nicknamed 'Iceland in miniature.' It is also known as a romantic escape away from the urban life of Reykjavik.

Once your private guide picks you up from your hotel, you'll head straight for the west, passing through the quaint town of Borgarnes and along the south side of the peninsula to sample the natural wonders of the coastal fishing villages of Hellnar and Arnarstapi. Take a walk along the shores and cliff edges to witness some bizarrely crafted rock formations where powerful waters rush through, creating strangely beautiful patterns in the volcanic rock.

Driving towards the tip of the peninsula, you'll pass the mighty Snaefellsjokull glacier, which stands proudly as the highest point on the peninsula. Nearby, you will be able to take a detour and opt for a caving experience at Vatnshellir. This will take you deep into the beautiful caverns of a lava cave rich in color and geological history.

Next, you'll visit mount Kirkjufell on the northern side of the peninsula next to the charming village of Grundarfjordur. Though the name of this mountain translates to 'Church Mountain,' it's nowadays better known as the 'Mountain shaped like an arrowhead' from the hit HBO show, Game of Thrones. Standing isolated from the other mountains, yet delicately close to the small waterfall of Kirkjufellsfoss, Kirkjufell is without a doubt the most-photographed mountain in the whole of Iceland.

Whichever option you select, you are in for a day rich in adventure and delight as you sample some of the most incredible parts of Iceland's amazing nature.

You will end the day in the luxurious Blue Lagoon Spa, where you will spend the next two nights. Before calling it a day, you will enjoy a lavish meal at the Blue Lagoon Lava Restaurant or Moss Restaurant.

The famous Blue Lagoon Spa.

Day 4 - The Blue Lagoon

Today you'll have the opportunity to either relax in the tranquil healing waters of the Blue Lagoon or traverse the Reykjanes peninsula to explore more of Iceland's nature.

Option 1 - Take the option to push pause on the traveling and enjoy the volcanic paradise of the Blue Lagoon, known for its mineral-rich healing waters. Bathe in tranquillity and reminisce on the great adventures and experiences you've had while here in Iceland. You can choose to add additional spa treatments or simply melt in the steamy waters with a complimentary silica mud mask and drink. This is the perfect way to unwind after your previous days of traveling.

Option 2 - Take advantage of your last full day in Iceland, and explore the volcanic wilderness of the Reykjanes peninsula. Complete with lava fields, volcanoes, and geothermal hotspots, the peninsula is well worth exploring should you still feel adventurous.

In the evening, you'll get another time to treat yourself by sampling the tasting menu at the Blue Lagoon Lava Restaurant or Moss Restaurant.

You'll retire for the night at the Blue Lagoon for a second night and rest up before your flight home the next day.

A bridge over the azure waters of the Blue Lagoon Spa.

Day 5 - Departure

Today is your departure day. We hope you've had a great time in Iceland, experiencing adventure, nature, and culture in luxury.

If you have a bit of extra time before your flight, you could take the chance to either have a final dip in the Blue Lagoon or treat yourself to a spa treatment. Enjoying the last few hours of your trip amid a volcanic paradise is sure to inspire envy from your fellow travelers and provide a relaxed state of mind for your upcoming travel.

Should you have to catch an earlier flight, you'll meet your private driver at your hotel reception, who will take you on a short journey to Keflavik international airport.

We hope you enjoyed your time in Iceland, and we'd love to welcome you back again in the future.

Western Iceland is where you can find Snæfellsjökull National Park, home to the beautiful glacier.

Snæfellsjökull was declared a national park in 2001 and is only one of three national parks in the country .

Snæfellsjökull is described in Jules Verne's famous novel "Journey to the Center of the Earth."

There are several black sand beaches in Iceland that are truly a sight unlike any other.

A GUIDE TO SIGHTSEEING IN ITALY: A ROMAN ADVENTURE AWAITS YOU

One of these is Reynisfjara, a black sand beach good for seeing but not for swimming because of the cold water and strong currents that make it dangerous.

You can also see the sparkle of Diamond Beach while in Iceland. This black sand beach is full of diamond resembling ice, making the water shimmer and shine.

Again, Diamond Beach is another beautiful landmark, but avoid swimming in this water, mainly because of the icebergs that can cause injury.

Vatnajokull glacier is Europe's largest. You can explore the glacier on foot or rent a snowmobile to see more in a short time.

There are so many breathtaking ice caves to explore throughout the glacier.

Vatnajokull may look familiar to you, even if you haven't visited Iceland before, as it was featured in the HBO series "Game of Thrones" and two "James Bond" films.

Vatnajökull National Park is where you can find Skaftafell nature reserve. Skaftafell nature reserve has been a part of Vatnajökull National Park since 2008. Glacier lagoons, black sand and mesmerizing rock formations can all be found here.

EXPLORING THAILAND'S TAPESTRY OF TRADITION, ADVENTURE, TIMELESS BEAUTY

It is just about 45 minutes from Diamond Beach.

Taking a Golden Circle tour is a must-do activity on a trip to Iceland. The Golden Circle is a scenic route where you'll be able to see Iceland in all its beauty.

How much time you carve out for this depends on how long you want to spend at each stop. You can easily spend days exploring this area, or you can rent a car and spend a few hours driving around.

There are three main stops part of the Golden Circle: Thingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss waterfall.

Reykjavík is filled with bars and restaurants , making the city a great spot for thriving nightlife at the end of a busy day exploring.

While here, you can also visit Hallgrimskirkja Church and stop by one of the many local swimming pools throughout the city.

AUSTRALIA TRAVEL GUIDE: WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU VISIT THE LAND DOWN UNDER

Skogafoss waterfall is a breathtaking beauty you will not want to miss when traveling to Iceland.

Get your cameras ready for this stop, because you'll want to snap a picture of you in front of the enormous waterfall. It's not a bad idea to pack a pair of waterproof shoes on your visit.

You don't need to carve out too much time for this, 30 to 45 minutes will do. Rainbows are very common here, so keep your eye out for that, too.

While in Iceland, you'll most likely be able to cross "see the northern lights" off your bucket list.

Making a plan to see the colorful lights in the sky is a little tricky, since their occurrence is not super predictable. That said, visiting between September and April, when the nights are long and dark, will give you the best possibility of seeing the aurora borealis.

Iceland volcano erupts: See images of flowing lava, smoke from fourth eruption in three months

blue lagoon iceland travel packages

Iceland has declared a state of emergency after a volcano erupted for the fourth time in three months.

The eruption opened a fissure almost 2 miles long between Stóra-Skógfell and Hagafell mountains on the Reykjanes Peninsula, according to Iceland's Meteorological Office, which had been warning for weeks about the eruption due to magma accumulating underground.

Volcanic eruptions had slowed significantly, but the eruption has not yet ended, according to an update issued Sunday by Iceland's Meteorological Office . Lava continues to flow from the fissure, and a lava front extends to the west and the south, now about 820 feet from Suðurstrandarvegur – the main road on the southern coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula.

The lava has moved at an average speed of about 39 feet per hour, and it could take an additional 20 hours to reach the main road at that speed, the meteorological office said.

The volcano erupted a few miles northeast of the coastal town Grindavik, about 30 miles southwest of Iceland's capital city, Reykjavik. Grindavik was previously evacuated in November when a series of earthquakes from the Svartsengi volcanic system opened large cracks north of town.

No flights have been reported to be disrupted by the eruption at Kaflavik , Iceland's main airport, or at other regional airports.

No deaths have been confirmed from the four eruptions, but the Associated Press reported one worker has been declared missing after reportedly falling into a volcanic fissure.

Iceland's Blue Lagoon evacuated, temporarily closed after eruption

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the Blue Lagoon thermal spa when the eruption began. Blue Lagoon, one of the top tourist destinations in the country, posted on its website Sunday that it was evacuated and has temporarily closed all operational units. It will remain closed through at least Tuesday, March 19.

"Despite these recent events, all our facilities remain in good condition and are surrounded by protective barriers designed to safeguard Blue Lagoon's vital infrastructure against potential lava flows," according to a statement on Blue Lagoon's website.

News | Blue Lagoon Extends Closure Until April 1 Due to Ongoing Eruption

The Blue Lagoon Iceland

  • Blue Lagoon Extends Closure Until April 1 Due to Ongoing Eruption
  • Ragnar Tómas
  • March 27, 2024

The Blue Lagoon has extended the closure of its facilities until April 1 due to volcanic pollution from the nearby eruption. A representative from the Blue Lagoon told RÚV yesterday that management would not reopen the facilities until it was completely safe for staff and visitors.

Monitoring pollution from the eruption closely

The Blue Lagoon was evacuated on March 16 when a volcanic eruption in Sundhnúkagígar commenced and has remained closed ever since. This morning, the Blue Lagoon, in consultation with the Icelandic Meteorological Office, decided to further extend its closure until April 1 , primarily on account of volcanic pollution. The situation will be reassessed on April 1.

Helga Árnadóttir, Chief Sales, Operation & Service Officer at Blue Lagoon Iceland, told RÚV yesterday that volcanic pollution in the area was being closely monitored: “We anticipate that Grindavíkurvegur road will reopen in the coming days, but we are dealing pollution from the eruption, which we are managing by increasing measurements.”

At the request of the Blue Lagoon, the Icelandic Meteorological Office installed monitors near the popular tourist destination. Sulphur dioxide levels in the area reached up to 5,000 ppm yesterday morning, levels which are potentially hazardous to human health.

As noted by RÚV , volcanic pollution was also recorded in the town of Höfn, with the Icelandic Meteorological Office recommending that residents close windows, turn off air conditioning, and monitor air quality.

The Blue Lagoon will continue to reassess the situation: “We have been taking one step at a time … intend to manage the situation well before reopening,” Helga observed. As noted by RÚV, one employee of the lagoon had to seek medical attention at a hospital last week due to volcanic emissions. He is on sick leave, according to Helga.

“We will not reopen until we and the authorities deem it completely safe for both staff and guests to return. This has a lot to do with wind conditions and how these measurements develop from day to day,” Helga concluded.
