What are the most surreal places to visit?

Some of the strangest places on earth are also the most sublime : from the UFO-like dragon's blood trees in Yemen to a rainbow-colored hot spring in Yellowstone to a bridge in Germany that looks like a leftover prop from Lord of the Rings.

Why do you need to turn off all your electronic devices before an airplane takes off and lands?

We've been taught to fear the interference of our portable devices and an airplane's sensitive electronic systems. And despite being told to turn off our darn phones, four out of ten passengers, it seems, disregard these warnings , since there's little hard evidence behind claims that electromagnetic emissions from devices can muddle airplane computers. Still, there's ample anecdotal corroboration, like the flight where a 30-degree navigation error was rectified simply by asking a passenger to turn off a portable DVD player. The issue is still being debated, so if in doubt, flick that Off switch. We might, eventually, long for the days when a chatty seatmate couldn’t make an hour-long phone call.

Do you have to be rich to travel the world?

The beauty of travel is that it’s accessible to everyone, in some form. You don't have to go far to experience a new culture. Plus there are several ways to make most flights affordable, whether by being flexible , searching on new websites like Skypicker and Fareness , or just by planning ahead. Know the best time to book a flight : 57 days in advance for domestic flights, 117 for international. Then again, you could just make traveling the world your 9-to-5.

Image may contain Electrical Device Electrical Outlet and Switch

What are some common items savvy travelers bring with them (that less-savvy travelers don’t)?

Don’t forget a small power strip—ideal for sharing a crowded outlet in an airport, and a simple way to keep all devices close by once at a hotel. (Combine that with a Zolt —which powers a laptop and two devices with a charger the size of a lipstick—and it’s even handier.) Keep a photograph of your luggage and passport on your smartphone; lose either of them, and you’ll be grateful for the reference. Pack a scarf—always. And since calling Nespresso coffee is an insult to baristas everywhere, the best in-room alternate is the Aeropress , a nifty gizmo that’s portable, light, and makes killer morning joe almost anywhere.

What’s it really like to be a travel writer?

"For every beautiful beach hideaway, there’s been a missed flight or delay; for every delicious meal, a nasty case of 'Delhi belly," says Traveler contributing editor Krisanne Fordham in her story on this very topic . In short: Traveling for a living is equal parts rewarding and challenging, satisfying and smelly. It teaches you to live—not linger, but really live—outside your comfort zone, to always pack a portable Wi-Fi hotspot, and to never check your bag again.

What are some things airline pilots won’t tell you?

There’s no better Bible of in-flight secrets than Air Babylon , a rollicking romp through 24 hours at an airport compiling anonymous tell-alls from a raft of staff. One sample tidbit: Aviation law decrees that after an onboard death (more common than you’d imagine), planes must land at the nearest airport. No airline wants to pay fines for being delayed, so no one is officially declared dead on board until the plane is landing at its destination.

Where are the best places to travel alone?

Well, we certainly don't recommend Tahiti, where there's an all-but-constant reminder at every juncture that you are alone , a sad friendless figure lurking amid the glowing honeymooners. There are a few places, though, where visiting solo is a bonus, not a burden: notably cruises, yoga retreats, and treks across Europe.

Is India a good travel destination?

One of the best in the world, with a vast variety of destinations clustered together in a single country, from the Miami-esque glitz of Mumbai to the Raj-era holdovers in Kolkata, the parched landscapes and Tuscany-like city states in Rajasthan or the quiet backwaters of Kerala. Here’s some inspiration for planning the perfect first-timer’s trip , or you can pore over the site for our India-based sister magazine.

How do you pack a suit?

Don’t wear that suit if you want it to arrive wrinkle-free. Instead, heed the advice of our style editor, Jayna Maleri: "Hold your jacket in front of you, with the front facing you, and fold length-wise in half away from you (so the buttons are on the fold and the shoulders are touching). Then carefully turn one shoulder inside out, and wrap it over the other shoulder (you'll know you're on the right track if the lining is now on the outside). Then fold the jacket one more time, in half width-wise. Fold your trousers carefully in half (use their natural crease as your guide), then place the folded jacket on top of them, near the knees. Fold the pants carefully around the jacket, and pack the bundle in the bottom of your luggage. Follow these steps and we promise, it won’t need a frantic steaming in the hotel shower."

What’s the best way to sleep on a plane?

Some seasoned travelers might swear by that knockout cocktail known as an Ambientini (a sleeping pill with a vodka chaser). There are better, safer ways , though—including pre-flight exercise and a few drops of lavender essential oil.

What are some of the best travel locations that most people have not heard of?

We’re all keen to explore countries and destinations that are unspoiled or unexpected, even if we’re probably still subconsciously following trends. ( This year , Myanmar, Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago, and Sri Lanka are some of our planned far-flung getaways.) But we'd also like to reframe this question: What are some of the best destinations you haven't heard of in well-known, heavily trafficked cities? Paris, perhaps, or London? Consider somewhere reasonably central, but slightly under the radar—say, Canal St. Martin in Paris and Shoreditch in London. They're easy to reach and a offer a wonderful "wow"moment of discovery.

What are the best airport hacks?

Download the GateGuru app before your next trip: It shows maps and amenities for any terminal, so you can better plan where to eat lunch or whether you can arrive early for a quick manicure. Don't forget that Zolt charger we mentioned earlier, so your phone doesn't die before takeoff. And, of course, sign up for Global Entry.

If I visit your country, what’s the one meal I shouldn’t miss?

It’s the same answer everywhere: breakfast. No meal is more distinctive or diverse. While sandwiches for lunch might be a global go-to, breakfast is still gloriously localized, whether you're eating bird’s nest–like pancakes filled with spicy curry in Sri Lanka or flaky, just-baked croissants in France. In Russia, however, it’s probably best just to skip it.

How do you get a flight upgrade?

The days of relying on an amenable attitude and a smile to score a cushy seat are, sadly, over. But some strategies still work : First, fly often and use miles whenever you can. And never underestimate the power of a good old-fashioned complaint when an airline overbooks your flight.

What’s it like to quit your job, grab a backpack, and travel the world?

Tons of people dream about leaving their jobs to travel, and while that semi-permanent vacation can often be exactly what you've imagined, you're guaranteed to encounter a few surprises—not all of them pleasant. Here's the truth—and the best way to prepare yourself—from a woman who did it .

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve ever met on a plane?

We can’t match the experience of a guy who met his wife on a plane, but we’ve encountered chatty ex-congressmen keen to tell the real-life story behind a blockbuster movie. And if you're lucky, you get to sit next to Bill Murray. Then again, the most interesting people aren’t necessarily fellow passengers but the crew: wedged onto a jump seat, staring straight at you, it’s easy enough to strike up casual chatter. We’ll never forget the veteran ex-Pan Ammer who regaled us on and off for an entire flight with stories. It was like a trip to aviation’s Golden Age rather than to California.

What are the best apps for travel?

By far the best transit guide ( RIP HopStop ) is CityMapper . It's free, and offers real-time directions via public transport, on foot, or by car plus a plethora of nifty bonuses for a selection of major world cities, from Tokyo to London, New York and even Hamburg. Even if you’re not wondering whether the inbound aircraft will make it on time for your flight, there’s a wondrous joy to watching the crowded skies via another free app, FlightRadar24 . LoungeBuddy (also free) helps with trips to unfamiliar destinations, allowing you to verify what status or access you might have to a refreshment oasis at the airport. We’ve used Postagram several times to send cards from places, like Russia, where they’re hard to find—the app is free and stateside delivery of that personalized keepsake costs just 99 cents apiece.

These Are the Most Searched Travel Questions Right Now — and We Have the Answers

From travel insurance to safety issues, these are the questions travelers are researching online right now.

Jessica Poitevien is an international storyteller and regular contributor to Travel + Leisure.

most searched travel questions

The world of travel has always changed at a rapid pace, but never has that been more true than now. Between figuring out where Americans can travel to keeping track of new COVID safety protocols, at times, it can seem like there are more questions than answers.

But what are the most searched travel questions these days? Using Google search data from the last month, Club Med determined what questions are boggling the minds of travelers the most. From basic queries about the existence of travel agents and the best travel credit cards to hot topics like when we can travel again, these are some of the most researched travel questions, along with our answers.

#4: Is it safe to travel right now?

Safety is always a concern when it comes to travel, but these questions usually surround a specific destination. A global pandemic changes things. We recently spoke with medical, aviation, and travel experts to answer the question of whether or not it's safe to fly during the pandemic . Factors they say you should consider include safety protocols, seat spacing, aircraft cleanliness, and flight time. In the end, though, the answer is complicated, full of caveats, and, ultimately, a personal decision.

#3: Is travel insurance worth it?

Leave it to a global pandemic to make people reevaluate the need for travel insurance. The popularity of Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) policies has skyrocketed since last year, but there are many factors to consider when choosing travel insurance, including whether or not COVID-related coverage (i.e. unexpected quarantine) is actually part of the deal. Whatever you decide, here are more details on making an informed choice when it comes to travel insurance.

#2: Why is traveling important?

It's not just the travel industry that promotes the benefits of getting out to explore or taking a relaxing vacation. It seems like there's some scientific evidence to back up that claim, too. Recent research has revealed that there are tangible health benefits to going on vacation and traveling in general. Beyond simply having fun, other travel perks include reducing stress, boosting brain power, and improving heart health.

#1: Is travel a hobby?

This probably wasn't what you were expecting for the top travel question right now. Perhaps it's the avid travelers trying to validate their sadness about not going on trips at the moment, or maybe it's the lockdown-weary folks who are ready to prioritize travel once it's possible again. Either way, travel is most definitely a hobby. And apparently, it's so important that 38% of Americans would give up sex to travel right now.

As experts and media spokespeople, the editors at SmarterTravel get asked a lot of travel questions. How early should you book? Which booking sites have the cheapest fares? What’s the best way to avoid bag fees?

The good news is that we have answers. From pinpointing the best day of the week for booking airfare to selecting the best destination for your next trip, here are solutions to some of your most common travel questions.

How Far in Advance Should I Book?

man typing on laptop with a coffee in hand

Truth be told, airfare prices—which fluctuate constantly—are impossible to predict. However, there are a few strategies that will guide you to a good deal and minimize your risk of overpaying.

For domestic travel, you’ll typically find the best fares one to two months before your trip. For international itineraries, you’ll often want to start searching for fares a bit further in advance, especially if your dates are firm or you’re traveling at a busy time of year. Add an extra month or two for peak travel times like holidays or major events. Some destinations, such as Disney World during spring break or popular beach spots in August, require even more advance planning, so do your homework.

To help you figure out when to jump on a fare, set up airfare alerts through sites like Airfarewatchdog (SmarterTravel’s sister site) or smartphone apps like Hopper ( iOS | Android ). You can put in your targeted trip dates and itinerary, and you’ll be notified when the fare drops.

How Can I Find the Best Travel Deal?

We’d love to point you definitively to a single booking site that always has the lowest possible airfares and hotel rates, but, unfortunately, that site doesn’t exist—and shopping around is always required. It’s best to check multiple types of sites before you book, including the provider’s own website as well as online travel agencies (think Expedia and Orbitz ) and metasearch sites (like Kayak and SmarterTravel’s parent company, TripAdvisor ).

To help you find the best sites to check, see the following lists:

  • The 12 Best Flight Search Sites for Booking Cheap Airfare
  • The 10 Best Hotel Booking Sites
  • The 14 Best Car Rental Booking Sites
  • The 10 Best Sites to Book a Cruise
  • The 8 Best Travel Package Sites for Booking a Cheap Vacation
  • The 9 Best Vacation Rental Sites for Travelers

One tip to keep in mind: The more flexible you are, the better the deals will be. Moving your trip a few months from a destination’s peak season to its shoulder season, for example, often means lower prices and smaller crowds. Flying out on a Tuesday or Wednesday rather than a Friday or Sunday can also save you money. For more information, see The Best and Worst Days to Fly .

How Can I Avoid Fees?

Yes, travel fees are pervasive and have wormed their way into every facet of travel, including flights, hotels, and rental cars. The good news is that many can be avoided. When it comes to flying, look for airlines that don’t charge fees for common services like baggage: For example, Southwest allows two checked bags for free, and some airlines will waive bag fees for frequent flyers or travelers who carry their branded credit cards. For more ideas, see 7 Smart Ways to Bypass Baggage Fees .

Many hotel fees can be avoided if you simply say no to certain services. In other words, don’t touch the minibar or make in-room calls (buy your own snacks and use your cell phone instead). Other charges, such as resort fees , are trickier. It’s best to find out about the charge in advance and book with another hotel, or ask the hotel manager to remove it—he or she might say no, but it never hurts to ask.

When renting a car, read the fine print. Look for easily avoidable fees like early-return and fuel charges. Also, most agents will pressure you into buying a collision damage waiver (CDW), but you might already have collision coverage through your credit card or your own auto insurance policy. Always check in advance.

What Are My Rights When Your Flight Is Delayed or Canceled?

airhelp

When you find yourself faced with a flight delay or cancellation, know that your rights vary depending on whether the situation is the airline’s fault (such as a mechanical delay) or due to some uncontrollable outside force (like a hurricane or winter storm ). Every airline’s policy varies, but most state that for delays or cancellations within the airline’s control, passengers are entitled to be rebooked on the next available flight, possibly transferred to another carrier, or to receive a refund for the unused portion of the trip. Some lines will also provide meal vouchers, hotel stays, and ground transportation at their discretion.

When the situation is beyond the airline’s control, a refund is all that most airlines promise. However, for major storms, airlines have set a precedent for preemptively canceling flights in advance so you’re not stranded at the airport, and they will allow you to rebook within a specific time frame without penalty.

To learn more, see Flight-Cancellation Rights: The Ultimate Guide and Flight Delays: What to Do and How to Prevent Them .

Do I Need Travel Insurance?

To buy or not to buy: That is the question when it comes to travel insurance . It all depends on risk and your tolerance for it. In general, if you’re taking a relatively short trip and haven’t paid a fortune for it, you probably don’t need it. Plus, most airlines—and hotels, for that matter—will give you a refund or allow you to rebook when there’s a widespread storm or incident.

However, if you have put down significant nonrefundable deposits, are traveling at a risky time of year (such as hurricane season ), have a potential medical condition, or are traveling to remote places where hospitals are scarce, travel insurance could be a good idea.

If you do opt insurance, make sure you know what’s included in your policy; most are very specific and won’t allow coverage to kick in once a storm is predicted or if you have a preexisting medical condition. You can also buy a policy that will allow you to cancel for any reason, but those usually come with a higher premium.

How Do I Know When a Deal Is Really a Deal?

Sadly, not all travel deals are created equal. And while some are bona fide, others are nothing more than gimmicks, if not downright scams. Your best defense is to take the time to fully research a deal before handing over your credit card number.

First, make sure you’re dealing with a reputable supplier, especially when it comes to tour operators and promoters. If you haven’t heard of the company, check with the Better Business Bureau or United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA) to make sure it is sound. Look for online reviews of the company on sites such as TripAdvisor or TrustPilot . Also, always compare prices across multiple suppliers. A deal might look good at first glance, but you may be able to beat the price elsewhere.

When it comes to hotel packages, price out inclusions like gift baskets or spa services separately to determine whether it’s cheaper to go a la carte. For example, many hotels offer individual room rates that are way cheaper than what you’d pay for the room plus the extras in a package. Remember: You can bring your own Champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries (likely higher-quality ones, too).

Lastly, always read the fine print, with a particular eye on blackout dates and other restrictions. You don’t want to get a deal that you can’t even use.

How Do I Score an Upgrade?

man sitting next to empty comfort seat on the plane.

Everyone wants to vault to the front of the airplane cabin or that penthouse suite in the hotel, but most of us feel that an upgrade is out of reach. Not necessarily so. The best way to get upgraded is to join a loyalty program. While it’s hard for many leisure travelers to accrue enough miles for a free first- or business-class ticket, basic upgrades usually require fewer miles. For hotels and rental cars, points generally add up more quickly and you can get additional free perks just for being a member.

Another way to land a better seat is to look for deals; some airlines will launch short-term sales on premium seats. For more information, see First Class for Free: How to Get an Airline Upgrade .

With hotels, arriving late in the day can increase your chances of a better room, since the hotel might have vacant rooms to fill (and can subsequently open up a cheaper room for another paying customer). Also, at check-in, mention if you are celebrating a special occasion like a honeymoon or an anniversary. Check out How to Get a Hotel Upgrade for Free to learn more.

At the rental car desk, asking for an upgrade might work, but make sure you’ve weighed your options: A larger car could mean higher gas costs, which can quickly negate any benefit. In any situation, even with the airlines, it never hurts to ask; when you do, dress nicely, be specific with your request, and above all, be polite.

What Can I Bring on the Plane?

This is such a complicated topic that SmarterTravel has a whole airport security FAQ to cover it. But here are the basics: In your carry-on, you can bring a single clear, quart-size plastic bag of liquid and gel items (such as shampoo, insect repellent, and sunscreen) in bottles of 3.4 ounces or less. If you need to bring larger quantities, you can put them in your checked bag—just make sure they’re well sealed to prevent messy spills. Exceptions to this rule include prescription medications, breast milk, and baby formula, which you can carry on in larger amounts.

The TSA has strict rules for items such as scissors, razors, sharp objects, and even wrapped gifts. To learn more, see the FAQ above or visit the TSA’s website .

What Should I Pack?

man packing suitcase for upcoming trip with gear spread out

Speaking of complicated topics … where do we begin? Of course, the answer depends on where you’re going and for how long, but you’ll want to start with SmarterTravel’s Ultimate Packing List , which has you covered with the basics you’ll need for just about any type of trip. If you want more specific advice, consider these lists:

I’m Unhappy with My Seatmate(s) on the Plane. What Can I Do?

SmarterTravel readers often write in with travel questions about airplane seating dilemmas. “I have severe allergies to animals. What are my rights if I am sitting by someone with an animal?” asks one reader.

“I was recently seated next to a large person whose body overhung the armrest and crowded me,” writes another. “What can be done in this situation?”

Generally speaking, your best bet is to approach a flight attendant discreetly and ask if there are any available seats to which you could be moved. In the case of animal allergies, even if no seats are free, the airline staff might be able to find a non-allergic passenger who’s willing to switch with you. Bring up your concerns early—because once the plane has taken off, the flight attendants will have much less flexibility.

What Are the Best Travel Destinations, and How Do I Know If They’re Safe?

There’s no single right answer to the first part of this question. It really depends on factors like your personal travel style and when you plan to travel. But there are a few tricks to identifying a great hot spot.

If affordability is a priority, look for destinations with new airline routes or hotels; providers will often release introductory rates at a discount, and you can be among the first to check things out. Additionally, keep an eye out for destinations making a comeback from natural disasters or political unrest; it can take time for tourists to return, even after the place is safe and open for business again, and the low demand can mean great deals for those who are willing to visit.

If you want to go where the excitement is, look for locales with big events, such as major sporting competitions, festivals, and museum openings. Check with the local tourism bureau to see what’s on; you might even stumble upon corresponding deals and packages.

SmarterTravel frequently publishes inspirational lists of places to travel for just about every interest. Check out Top Travel Destinations for 2020 or browse the site’s Destinations section to learn more.

As for safety, your first step is to research your destination on the U.S. State Department’s website . Here you’ll find important travel advisories and information about crime, health concerns, and other safety issues for every country around the world. Pay attention to the details before writing off an entire destination; it may be perfectly safe as long as you steer clear of certain problem areas. Keep an eye on news headlines in the lead-up to your trip so you’re aware of any last-minute issues.

If you have specific concerns, consider posting questions on travel forums such as TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet . Destination experts and locals can often offer up-to-the-minute updates from the ground.

The world of travel is a confusing one right now, so it’s completely understandable that before booking your next trip, you want to know exactly where you stand. We want to help you with this, by providing the most relevant and recent information to help you feel informed and confident.

We’re being asked a huge variety of travel related questions all the time, so every month we’ll be sharing the most frequently asked questions right here on The Real Word. If your question isn’t answered below, you can also visit our Know Before You Go page for more information.

A Trafalgar Wellbeing Director* cleaning a coach

If I book my trip and then certain sites or experiences are suddenly required to close, how will you ensure my experience is not impacted?

Because you have chosen to travel with a guided touring company (and the world’s most loved one at that), managing these kinds of scenarios is what our team do best. We can assure you that we will adjust your itinerary while still making sure that you have an unforgettable travel experience, that still provides the incredible value you know us for. You will be updated of these changes (if required) as soon as possible, and your Travel Director will also keep you well informed while on tour.

If I book my trip but then need to change my booking, will my money be safe?

Absolutely. Thanks to our risk free and flexible booking conditions , you are free to change your travel plans up to 30 days before your trip is due to depart. You can choose new dates and / or a new destination without penalty on the land portion of your trip. Trafalgar is also a proud member of The Travel Corporation, who remain a stable and solvent company despite the difficult circumstances caused by the pandemic. You can read TTC Chief Executive Brett’s Tollman’s letter of reassurance to all guests here .

Will I need to have had the vaccine to be allowed to travel with Trafalgar?

We do not mandate vaccinations, however any guest travelling with Trafalgar internationally will need to provide proof of one of the following to their Wellbeing Director* upon arrival, and before joining their tour:

– Proof of the full COVID-19 vaccination with the final dose given at least 14 days prior to the start of the tour

– The verifiable and negative result of a Covid-19 test taken 72 hours prior to the start of the tour (taking time zones into consideration)

Please Note:

– This is not required when travelling between Australia and New Zealand or domestically in either of these countries.

– For travel in the United States the negative test result must be a PCR test.

– Guests will also need to comply with specific requirements imposed by airlines and/or governments which may differ from the above.

How much time will be taken out of my holiday for required Covid testing?

Currently, we are working on arranging for testing to take place at the required time, and with minimal inconvenience. We will be facilitating testing as quickly as possible and you will be given full information on when and where testing will take place by your Travel Director once on tour. It is also important to note that any testing will be at the expense of the guest.

Will I still have a good time despite these new protocols being in place?

Of course. The protocols we have put in place are there to protect you, but we can assure you that you will still have the same incredible Trafalgar travel experience as before. Every single itinerary we run is perfectly planned to ensure that you can travel with total ease, combining the perfect blend of must see sites and authentic local experiences. Every aspect of your tour will have been vetted and approved by our local teams, and both your Wellbeing Director* and Travel Director will be on hand with their personalised approach to ensure that you are well looked after.

Will my trip be cancelled if someone on my tour group gets sick?

If someone gets sick while travelling, we are not expecting the tour to be cancelled, however it will depend on the specific situation as we will need to follow the advice of local government and health authorities. Your dedicated Wellbeing Director* will be on hand to facilitate any required distancing or testing and ultimately, we will take care of you and be with you every step of the way until you are on your flight home.

How many other guests will be on my trip?

The number of guests will always adhere to the local guidelines of the places we travel, and we will continue to adapt to regulation changes from health authorities and local governments.

Do you have a travel question you would like answered by our team? Pop it in the comments below, or reach out to our team on social media by sending us a direct message either on Facebook or Instagram .

* Trafalgar will include a Wellbeing Director on trips with 21 or more travelling guests to all operating regions excluding Africa, Asia, Australia & New Zealand. Custom groups will have the option to include a Wellbeing Director for a surcharge. In addition to the Travel Director and Driver Team, the Wellbeing Director will be responsible for keeping up to date on the latest health authority and local government guidelines. They will also ensure adherence to wellbeing protocols on trip and will be a dedicated support to help guide our guests.

Google has revealed this year’s trending travel searches

Many of us turn to popular search engine Google when searching for answers to travel queries, and we were interested in the results of its annual Year in Search data for 2020. This data shows the top trending searches in the US from the trillions of searches that defined the past year.

While “coronavirus” was the top trending search worldwide, the pandemic has obviously had an impact on the trending travel questions this year. Questions that were asked repeatedly included “where can Americans travel right now?” and “when will international travel resume?” People searched for answers to questions around “is it safe to travel?” as well as specific questions around whether Mexico and Hawaii were open for travel. They were also curious about “when will travel restrictions be lifted?"

When we weren’t finding new recipes or trimming our own bangs, we explored virtual ways to stay entertained and connected. Top trending searches around the world "virtual" included field trips, museum tours and tours, as we searched for travel experiences in online formats. "For nearly 20 years, as the year comes to a close, Google has shared the top questions, moments and individuals that inspired the world to search," says Nelly Kennedy, brand editorial director at Google.

The best virtual tours to explore the world from home

"Rooted in Google Trends data, our annual Year in Search captures the essence of a year. In 2020, we asked “how to change the world” twice as much as “how to go back to normal,” and “how to be anti-racist” was searched more than “how to become a millionaire.” Each year, the searches that are the backbone of Year in Search illuminate a larger story. In 2020, it was the story of deep questioning, as the world searched “why” more than any other time in history."

7 Common Travel Questions — Answered

U.S. News spoke with industry insiders and travel experts to answer some of the most disputed queries.

From making reservations to tracking down luggage, here's what you need to know for your next trip.

Traveling is stressful. Planning a vacation can be a cumbersome endeavor and overlooking some details is inevitable. But while you may be busy thinking about more exciting stuff like what to pack and what sights you'll see, you also have to consider the logistics for things like flights, accommodations and travel documents. Now this is where it gets complicated, thanks to the multitude of travel questions that all seem to have contradicting answers. But fear not, U.S. News has you covered. We've rounded up a list of some of the most commonly asked travel questions and spoke with a handful of industry insiders and travel experts to, once and for all, answer those queries that cause so much anxiety.

How far in advance should I make my flight reservations (domestic and international)?

Technically, there is no "right" time to book a flight, but there are certain guidelines you can follow to ensure you are getting a good price. Christopher Elliott , journalist, consumer advice advocate and creator of Elliott.org , recommended travelers purchase their flight tickets at least 14 or more days (two to three weeks) in advance for both domestic and international flights. And if you can, never buy a flight within 24 hours of departure. "Airlines jack up the rates within 24 hours and for walk-ups," Elliott said. He also strongly warned against buying a flight too early because airlines price flights at their highest when first released about 300 to 320 days in advance. George Hobica, the creator of Airfarewatchdog , advised travelers to "set up free airfare alerts by email and pounce when there's an unadvertised sale, which could happen at any moment, with huge savings."

How far in advance should I book my hotel reservations?

Earlier than when you'd book your flight. The American Hotel & Lodging Association officials recommended booking accommodations as soon as you have your dates finalized, especially if you are traveling with a family or have special requests, such as ADA compliant rooms, cribs, etc. The association also suggested booking directly with the hotel as it typically offers the best rates. Plus, you'll be much more likely to earn loyalty program points if you choose not to book through a third-party site like Expedia or Orbitz. Dave Solomito, director of brand marketing at Kayak, agreed that travelers should make hotel reservations as soon as possible if they have specific dates, but added that those with flexibility may find greater deals booking last minute. "If you wait until the day you arrive in your destination, you may find a great last-minute deal as hotels look to sure up their occupancy each night," he said. Hotel Tonight , Travelzoo and Last Minute Travel are great resources to consult if you're looking to plan a vacation on a whim.

What's the first thing I should do if my flight is canceled?

If your flight is canceled, immediately go to the ticket counter to determine your options. And while you're in line, Hobica recommended calling the airline to see if a customer service representative can assist you over the phone (he or she may be able to help you before you reach the front of the line). Hobica also suggested travelers reach out to the airline via Twitter to see if the customer service agent manning the airline's social media account can be of assistance. "American Airlines' Twitter staff is especially responsive in this regard," Hobica said.

What's the best day to book travel plans?

This question is widely debated and disputed among travel experts and writers alike. All of our sources agreed that there is no such thing as a "best" day for booking travel plans. In fact, Elliott and Solomito noted that recent data has proven that the "best day" theory is a gimmick. And although prices do vary during different times of the week, Solomito noted that the average savings are usually only $5 to $15. "There is absolutely no magic day. That's a myth," Hobica said. "You buy when you're ready to fly. Don't play the game," Elliott added.

How do I obtain a visa?

Before obtaining a visa, travelers should first determine whether or not the country they're traveling to requires one. For instance, some countries like Russia and Australia require you to have a visa regardless of the duration of your stay, even if you'll be in the country for just two days. Luckily, many countries only require a visa for longer stays, usually those exceeding 90 days. The U.S. Department of State is a great resource for American citizens looking to travel abroad and provides a wealth of knowledge and country-specific details, including entry and exit requirements, visa information and travel alerts and warnings.

If you do need a visa, call or make an appointment with the country's consulate. The consulate will provide you with the next steps for obtaining a visa, and tell you whether or not you can send the visa paperwork via mail or if you must apply in person. Keep in mind that visa costs and fees vary from country to country. Also, note that some countries have multiple consulates and cater to geographical areas, so make sure you are in contact with the specific consulate assigned to your region.

When is travel insurance needed?

There is no definitive rule of thumb to help you determine whether or not travel insurance is necessary. However, Elliott recommended investing in travel insurance if it's a trip that costs more than $5,000 or a "vacation that you can't afford to lose." And Solomito agreed: "Travel insurance is always a good idea if you can swing it, especially when you are planning a big trip and have invested significantly into your travel plans," he said. Other factors, such as specific health restrictions, should also be considered. For instance, if you have a health condition that may cause you to cancel your travel plans, health insurance is probably a smart investment. But most importantly, if travel insurance will ease your travel anxieties, it's worth it. "If you're going somewhere and it'll give you peace of mind, buy it," Elliott said.

What should I do if my luggage is delayed?

If your bags don't come off the conveyor belt, alert airline personnel immediately. Each airline usually has a service kiosk located in the baggage claim area where someone will be able to assist you in tracking down your bags and filing a report.

Fortunately, the U.S. Department of Transportation has started to crack down on airlines that are not providing necessary support to travelers with delayed or lost luggage. Specifically, it has enhanced the protection and compensation that airlines must provide to travelers. Factors such as whether or not you're away from home and how long it will take to track down your bag contribute to how much compensation the airline is required to provide. If you have to buy any necessities due to your delayed baggage, make sure to save all your receipts so the airline can properly reimburse you. In rare cases, the airline may give you a cash advance.

If you purchased your flight with a credit card, Hobica recommended checking with your credit card company to see if it covers lost or delayed baggage. "If you paid for the flight with certain credit cards, the issuer may have automatic, free insurance to help out in bag delay situations," he said.

The Most Searched Travel Questions Right Now

From travel insurance to safety issues, these are the questions travelers are researching online right now. Globe Aware is also ready to answer your questions and concerns about our volunteer vacations.

These Are the Most Searched Travel Questions Right Now — and We Have the Answers

From travel insurance to safety issues, these are the questions travelers are researching online right now.

BY JESSICA POITEVIEN MARCH 04, 2021

We recently spoke with medical, aviation, and travel experts to answer the question of whether or not it's safe to fly during the pandemic.

How Often Do You Read Books?

Personally, I read a lot. On average, I may finish up to 2 to 4 new books every month. A good book helps pass the time whether I am waiting in the airport, in-flight, or on a long bus ride. You can read anywhere.

I am also a movie lover so I watch a lot of films and documentaries . Reading also comes in handy when you travel a lot.

These days, you can also read by listening to an Audiobook. I use Audible and have a personal collection of over 200 Audiobooks.

Reading also adds to my perspective on things and the world. I love and enjoy learning about new cultures and places. Sometimes, I will read travel stories about a place I am about to visit.

How Much In Advance Should I Start Planning My Trip?

You should start planning for about two months before the trip. At this time, you will be able to buy airplane tickets at the best price and book the best deals on hotels.

Plus, you will have enough time to organize everything and plan your trip so that you do not forget something vital.

Although, depending on your finances and your work, you may need to start saving and requesting time off sooner than two months prior to your trip.

How Can I Make Money While Traveling?

If you are skilled in writing or photography, you can try to sell your works to travel magazines or websites.

However, you should arrange this in advance. Contact the magazines, newspapers, websites, both local and international, to see if they are ready to buy your content.

There are also other jobs, which you can do while traveling. The freelance world offers multiple opportunities. You can check out freelance websites to explore further options, such as:

If your job allows you to work remotely (outside of the office) then all you need is your laptop. So look into remote jobs as well.

I Am Thinking About Quitting My Job And Traveling The World. What Should I Know?

Just one thing: don’t quit your job (yet) , unless you have a good backup plan.

If you can do your job outside of the office, it’s a perfect middle ground. Otherwise, you should find a freelance job or save up a trust fund of sorts before you leave everything behind.

If you do not make proper preparations you’ll be very disappointed after a couple of months of travel. It’s better to travel as you continue to earn (be it from a job or from passive income).

How Can I Afford To Travel?

  • Earn (more) money
  • Spend less (than your current spending)
  • Invest (for maximizing your capital over the long-term)

How Much Does It Cost To Go To…[X]?

To answer this question, we need more information. Do you prefer to travel on a budget or luxuriously? Do you prefer to live in a hostel or a hotel suite? Do you fly in a business class or ride a bus?

Check our Destination Guides as part of your travel planning and research.

Moreover, you can check our Travel Calculator where you will find some fun info about your travel goals in terms of budget and time.

How Can I Calculate How Much I Will Spend While Traveling?

There are various mobile apps that help you to do just that. You can install TripSaver or a similar app.

You can find a comprehensive list of useful apps on our Resources and Travel Hacks pages.

How Can I File My US Taxes While Living Or Traveling Abroad?

There are multiple online services that allow you to do that. You can choose IRS, H&R Block or Turbo Tax, whichever is preferable to you. In a nutshell, you don’t have to be physically present in the US to file your annual federal or state taxes.

How Can I Convert My Dollars (Currency) Into…?

If you know the destination you are headed to, visit the page for that location on our website, and you will find all the necessary information there.

We don’t recommend using currency exchange kiosks at most US airports. It’s best to pay using your no-international-transaction-fee Credit Card or using PayPal (if available) or converting the cash at the destination.

Usually, banks will give you a better currency conversion rate than any kiosks at an airport or shopping mall.

Note: You can access all of our destination travel guides from the interactive world map .

Traveling On Budget – FAQ

danish-currency-danish-kroner_danish coins_money_bills_oresund_denmark_metal_unique_PD

Is It Possible To Travel On A $1,000 USD/Month Budget?

Although it may not seem like a large amount of money, in fact, $1000 USD a month is enough to travel around the world. Of course, some people can spend $10,000 USD a month on travel while others will live off just $500 USD.

In most countries, $1,000 a month is considered enough amount to live comfortably and easily get around.

For example, $1,000 USD in India is a higher-middle-class median income. And it is so in most South American , Asian , and African countries around the world .

If you spend wisely and live modestly, you’ll feel “rich” if you can afford to spend $1000 USD per month while living/traveling abroad (in most of the world).

Is It Possible To Travel On A Budget And Still Try The Best Of The Country’s Cuisine?

Of course! Eating local food is always cheaper, and you gain valuable experience too. You just need to follow these rules:

  • Eat where the locals eat
  • Avoid cafes and restaurants in tourist areas; they are usually overpriced
  • Look for Couchsurfing opportunities and ask your host for recommendations
  • Likewise, if you are staying in Airbnbs, ask your host for suggestions
  • You can even buy food in the local supermarket and try to cook something yourself
  • Don’t miss the street food (if you feel safe)

Is Budget Travel Only For Young People? Cad I Travel On A Budget If I Am Older?

We believe budget traveling doesn’t depend on your age. There are women who fly low-cost airlines and live in hostels even in their 60’s.

Just because it is not as common doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. Even if you are traveling with your family, we don’t see any reasons why you can’t travel on a budget if you plan ahead and do your research beforehand.

Which Destinations Maximize Your Budget? Any Recommendations?

According to popular opinion, the cheapest and most attractive tourist destinations are in  Southeast Asia . You won’t be able to find a better deal: the prices are low, and you get a lot for your money while you are there.

Also, the food, the climate, the beaches, and the people’s hospitality are just wonderful.

India is another great destination for budget tourists.  China and Eastern Europe also have appealing budget locations, so are most South American destinations.

What Is Some Good Advice For Those Who Don’t Believe They Can Afford To Travel?

There are people in the world who can’t travel because they are really poor and don’t even have enough money for food or clothes.

But if you buy new clothes regularly, go to the movies sometimes, and eat in a restaurant occasionally, then you can afford to travel.

You might have to cut down on expenses, work more, or travel on a low budget; however, it is totally worth the effort.

Also, there are opportunities where you can work and travel. For more details please visit our Digital Nomads page.

Does Budget Travel Always Mean Cheap Travel?

Budget traveling means getting the most value for every dollar you spend. It’s not always about being cheap.

You can have as much fun when traveling on a budget as you do on an expensive trip. Sometimes, it is more fun. Not spending money where you shouldn’t allow you to travel longer and at your terms.

Is It True That Traveling With A Group Is Cheaper Than Traveling Alone?

It is true. Very often, renting accommodations for three or more people is cheaper than living alone or even as a couple. This applies to buying food and renting a car, negotiating a tour cost to expensive places, and so on.

Traveling in a group is also more fun if all of you are like-minded and already know each other! Moreover, if you haven’t traveled much before, a group will provide you a sense of safety and comfort.

On the flip side, if you are an adventurous soul one who likes to keep control of the situations and the logistics, then group travel may not be a good idea for you!

Personally speaking, 90% of our travels are as a couple! We like to go the extra mile and don’t mind physical discomfort and are mildly risk-takers.

But if we are going on a cruise, we don’t mind traveling as a group! In fact, it’s more fun with a group of people if the goal is to just relax and chill and chit chat!

How Can I Travel For FREE?

You can’t travel for free in an absolute sense! Even if you are not spending money, you would be exchanging your time and labor for money! You know what I mean.

That said, there are a lot of options to travel without spending much money.  Numerous volunteer projects offer this opportunity. There are such variants as WWOOF, WorkAway, or HelpX, where you work for accommodation.

Another popular method (which we personally recommend) is either studying or teaching abroad. Check out our Resources page to find out more.

Also, if your job allows remote-work, we recommend taking full advantage of that! That way, we can bring the cost of your travel to a bare minimum while still earning your paychecks!

What Is The Cheapest Way To…?

Cheapest is not always the best way. We always look for a combination of a reasonable price and high quality, and you should too.

It may seem impossible, but you can find quality without breaking your budget, you just have to know where to look. Read our blog to learn how.

Also, be careful with what appears cheap. An inexpensive flight could also mean taking a night taxi to get to the airport, or booking a hotel for a 30-hour layover, or even parking a car at the airport.

These unexpected costs can make a seemingly inexpensive flight quite pricey.

What Should I See In…? What Can I Do For FREE In…?

We have valuable information about all of the most popular world destinations on our blog, and some of the less popular spots too.

However, if you need information about somewhere specific, you can either search on our blog or write a comment asking us to write about that destination if we haven’t already covered it yet.

What Is Your Favorite Destination?

It’s always changing! We have over 10 people on our team . Together we have visited at least half of the world .

Everyone has his or her own personal favorite places on Earth. We prefer to think of ourselves as citizens of the world and so we can’t pick only one country or city.

That said, some of the Destinations we would like to highlight are:

  • Kenya (+ check out: Our 7 Days Kenya Safari)
  • Nepal (+ check out: Trekking in Nepal )

When Is The Best Time To Go To…?

The best time to go anywhere is when it suits you and when you are ready. Of course, every destination has a high and low season.

During the low season, the weather can be bad and tourist facilities may be closed. On the other hand, everything tends to be cheaper this time of year.

During the high season, you are sure to meet huge tourist crowds, overpriced services, and overbooked hotels.

So, it’s all up to you. There is no perfect time to go anywhere; it all depends on what you want from your trip.

Flights & Airlines – FAQ

travel-air-jet-flight-airplane

Get me that last-minute deal

Can I Fly Internationally Without A Return Ticket?

This depends on the airline. Some are really strict and won’t even let you onboard without proof of a continuing ticket.

However, every country has its own rules and regulations. In any case, if possible, you would be wise to get a refundable airline ticket or a cheap bus ticket just to satisfy them.

Are There Money Saving Hacks For Purchasing Airline Tickets?

Absolutely! In fact, the airplane ticket cost is a big chunk of your travel spending. You will find plenty of money-saving hacks on our Travel Hacks page. Also, read:

  • Most Common Myths About Low-Cost Airlines
  • What You Need To Know When Traveling With Your Pet

I Noticed That Fares Go Up When Your Search The Same Destination Repeatedly. Why Is That?

There is evidence that airlines raise prices by tracking your computer’s IP address. To avoid this, you should clear your browser’s history and cookies or use the “incognito” window while you browse.

Also, sometimes, you can search for flights on google flights and if you see something that seems higher than average price, set up a price alert and when the prices go down, you can then buy your tickets.

Can I Give My Mileage Or Rewards Points To My Relatives?

Yes, you sure can, but generally only up to a restricted amount. Different airlines and rewards system may have different rules.

Sometimes, they may also charge you a transfer fee. Fees vary depending on the airline

Accommodations – FAQ

travel-hotel-rooms-hotel-room-bed

Pricey doesn’t necessarily mean better or safer

Do Accommodations Charge Extra For Solo Travelers?

Some do, but many of them don’t. Also, if a single room in a hotel is too expensive for you, you can always book a bed in a hostel dormitory.

You can also look into Couchsurfing and Airbnb for booking your accommodations if you are traveling solo!

PS: If you are on Couchsurfing, connect with us .

PPS: Please use our Airbnb referral link to book your next stay we both will get between $35 USD each. If you want to earn money with Airbnb by being a host, please use my host referral link , and we both will get up to $100 USD each!

How Do You Decide Where To Stay?

This is not an easy decision. However, when picking your accommodations, consider these factors:

  • Pick lodging that is close to public transport routes or your intended destinations
  • Often hotels sell single rooms at cheaper rates than doubles. Also, the bed type and whether the room has a nice view out of the window or not affects prices
  • Look at the neighborhood safety, and ensure the accommodation has a 24-hour reception and a safe/locker in the room

What Is A Hostel? Is It Safe?

A hostel is an inexpensive form of lodging, which looks like a student dormitory. At hostels you share a big room with other travelers.

Some hostels also offer private rooms, but they are still cheaper compared to hotels.

Hostels can be used as both short-term and long-term accommodations, as most of them provide equipped kitchens and laundry facilities.

Usually, this kind of accommodation is popular among younger travelers, although most facilities don’t have an age limit.

Is Staying At A Hostel Safe? What About The Movie “Hostel” ?

Never believe movies, especially in the horror genre. First of all, Eastern Europe looks nothing like how it is shown in the film ‘Hostel’ .

Secondly, we can’t lie, there are some horrible hostels and they can be found at cheap destinations as well as inexpensive cities such as Paris , New York , and London .

All you need to do to avoid trouble is read reviews carefully and use trustworthy booking websites, like Booking.Com or HostelWorld.

Of course, sometimes something can still slip through, but if you follow this advice it is unlikely.

Hostels are cheap, they remind you of college, and they are an easy way to meet new people. However, you should come prepared with flip flops for the shower and a padlock for your locker.

How Do I Select A Good Hostel To Stay In If I’ve Never Been To One?

Go to HostelWorld or Booking.com and read the feedback carefully. Sometimes, you can miss something important but just read through the reviews carefully and you should be alright.

If necessary, you can always use TripAdvisor as a backup for reading additional reviews too.

Lastly, keep in mind, since reviews can be gamed, always make sure to do a google search of the place or tour that your booking with negative keywords such as a “scam”, “fake”, etc. just to be on the safe side.

It is hard to say for sure but it is probably the United Kingdom  and the United States . Their border control officers always ask several grueling questions.

Plus, you need to have serious proof of your onward travel and many people get denied entrance anyway.

Health And Safety – FAQ

cape-verde-beach-sunset

What Should I Do To Stay Healthy And Fit During My Trips?

It highly depends on each person’s individual health state and habits. However, here is some basic advice:

  • Drink a lot of water, in hot climates particularly
  • Don’t abuse alcohol
  • Avoid fatty food, especially before the flight
  • Find time to work out

What About Vaccinations And Risk Of Malaria And Other Diseases?

You should never mess with your health. If you are going to an exotic destination, you should have all the vaccinations and take all the pills your doctor recommends.

Also, when you are traveling, it is always better to be over-prepared and over-concerned than under-prepared or ignorant. Many parts of the world still have easily preventable diseases rampant in the local population.

Sometimes, it is the mosquitoes or the wildlife. If you can manage, avoid eating meat and stick to a vegetarian diet as much as possible.

Is There A Chance Of Getting Sick From Eating Food From Street Vendors?

Yes, there is always a risk of getting sick from eating almost anything. You should be cautious and apply common sense, but don’t be over paranoid.

Ask the local people where they go out to eat and which local streets are best to explore the local cuisine. They will be able to suggest a decent place which is not pricey, is authentic and is also safe!

I Hear That Human Trafficking Is Great Danger Nowadays. Should I Be Worried?

Unfortunately, it is true. Human trafficking has been going on for millennia. Kidnapping is a real business in many underdeveloped and developing countries.

However, it doesn’t impact the tourists as much. That said, keep in mind the following:

  • As a tourist, you are more likely to be (financially) scammed than kidnapped
  • Do not share your live whereabouts on your social media when traveling. Share after you trip is over.
  • Do your homework on who is suppose to pick you up at the airport and what they look like, their names, etc.
  • Don’t show off your wealth when traveling in foreign countries
  • Remember is to keep your passport to yourself and always have a copy (both printed and digital)

The 99.999% of us will be fine and never encounter anything like this. And, for the 99.999% of your travel, you’ll be fine!

Is Traveling Solo Dangerous For A Woman?

We hear this question a lot. We could also ask “Is it dangerous for a woman to go to a supermarket alone?” Safety during travel doesn’t really depend on gender.

At the Art of Travel, we don’t encourage gender stereotypes. Women do not travel differently than men.

Of course, in some places, you need to be a little more careful than in the others. As a rule, you just need to follow a few simple safety rules.

How Can I Keep My Money And Valuables Safe While Traveling?

If you travel alone, you are your own safe and bodyguard. Try to keep an eye on all your valuables. Spread your cash out and put it in different places.

Many experienced travelers use money belts, and that’s a great idea. Anyway, you shouldn’t have all your money in cash, or all that cash in one place.

This is particularly true if you are on a long trip. Take debit and credit cards with you, but remember to check if your destination has ATMs.

Always have a backup debit card hidden somewhere in your main luggage, in case you lose the first one or it gets stolen. In a hotel, it is better to keep all your valuables in a safe or a locker.

When you are out, don’t flash your valuables in public without necessity. Always get good travel insurance so you are covered in the case of an unpredictable situation.

How Can I Convince My Family Not To Worry About Me?

If you travel often, naturally your family and friends will be worried about you. If you want to convince them that traveling isn’t dangerous, here are a few things you can try:

  • Have a serious conversation and find out what concerns them
  • Let them in on the planning process
  • Decide on the communication methods you will use when you are gone
  • Invite them to go with you

How Can You Make Sure To Feel Safe While Traveling Alone?

There is a difference between being safe and feeling safe. So, if you want to be safe there are basic rules, which you should respect. For a full list, check out our Adventure Travel page , the solo travel section in particular.

If you have trouble feeling safe, there may be a psychological problem you are suffering from, so you will need to see a specialist.

Is It Safe To Travel To…?

You should check with official resources for this kind of information, this includes travel bureaus and consulate websites.

Our Resources page  has some useful links on travel safety as well, don’t miss it.

I Am Very Close To My Family But I Want To Travel. How Can I Stay In Touch With Them?

Thanks to modern technology, staying in touch with our loved ones couldn’t be easier. Apart from regular phone calls, you’ve got Skype, Viber, WhatsApp, and many other avenues to contact your friends and family.

The biggest difficulty in communication comes from the difference in time zones. If you can coordinate specific times to talk with your family, you will have no problem staying in touch.

Sometimes you have to be prepared to be out of cell service or Wi-Fi depending on your destination, but you can discuss this with your family before you leave.

Local Culture And Language – FAQ

amazon rainforest indian tribe_PD

An Amazonian tribe

Has Traveling Become Harder? Is It More Difficult To Make Local Connections And Absorb Local Culture Now?

Of course, nowadays people are much more tied to their gadgets and consequently, communication can be harder. On the other hand, with the help of electronics, you can reduce your homesickness and feel closer to home.

Also, making acquaintance with locals has never been easier. Couchsurfing, Airbnb, and Meetups are handy services, which will help you greatly while traveling.

An added perk of using these services is that they allow you to meet locals in your destination.

How Can You Overcome The Language Barrier?

Language is usually not such a big deal, especially if you know English. In every corner of the world, you can typically find someone who speaks it. In popular tourist areas, people commonly speak English as a second language.

This is particularly true for people who work in the tourism industry. In some situations, you can also rely on the language of gestures to communicate when needed.

How Can I Meet New People And Make New Connections While Traveling?

If you want to meet new people while traveling, there are several ways to do so:

  • Stay in communal places , such as hostels, or use Couchsurfing or Airbnb to stay with locals.
  • Attend local meetups for travelers . For example, Couchsurfing organizes these types of events in cities worldwide.
  • Join a group activity , such as a free tour, a cooking class, or an excursion.
  • Search on meetup.c om for local activities . It is a great way to meet locals with similar interests.
  • Let your Twitter and Facebook friends know where you are headed. Let people know you will be in their location and want to meet and spend some quality time together. Maybe some locals will contact you themselves.

Can I Really Absorb The Culture And Get To Know Locals Without Speaking Their Language?

Without much communication, it is hard, you are right. However, you can always use sign language or find English-speakers.

Use such websites as Couchsurfing or Meetups, to find other people who speak English.

What Options Are There For Working Abroad?

There are numerous opportunities for working abroad. You can teach, become an au pair, work on a boat or a cruise ship – all these options give you a chance to both earn some money and see the world.

Check out our Resources page for more information.

What Is The Best Advice You Can Give A Student Who Wants To Travel?

If you are a student and you dream about traveling, try studying abroad for a semester or two. This opportunity will give you access to the best cities in foreign countries.

You will be able to dive deeply into the local culture. You will gain new friends, valuable experience and an endless list of opportunities.

How Can I Work Overseas Without A Dual Citizenship?

You need to apply for a work visa in advance. All countries require a work-permit/work-visa for foreign workers. Without one, no one will hire you.

For some countries, short-term work permit visas are available by online application. Do an online search for the specific country you are planning to travel to.

General Travel Questions – FAQ

question-mark-question-mark-symbol

How Do I Get Over Feeling Awkard When Doing Things Alone?

Of course, getting a table for one, going to a cinema by yourself or asking for help in the street alone can be very awkward. But you need to overcome this fear. How? Just do it. Take a book with you when you eat in a restaurant alone.

Don’t be afraid to ask people on the street for help. Hold your head high when walking into a cinema or a festival alone.

There is no reason to feel ashamed about traveling alone, many people do it, and it is a rich and rewarding experience. And don’t forget that people around you are just strangers and you will never see them again!

Do You Know Anyone Who Travels With A Pet?

We don’t happen to know a lot of people who travel with their pets. These people exist, but you probably won’t see them in hostels.

Most hotels don’t allow their guests to bring their animals either; this is particularly true of budget hotels. In luxury accommodations, you are certainly allowed to do whatever you want and to come with whoever you want.

How Can I Deal With The Inevitability Of Coming Home From A Trip?

It all depends on the trip. Sometimes you get homesick and want to see your family and friends so much that you are really happy to go home.

However, if you are depressed after coming home from a trip, try filling your time with something: take a class, learn something new.

It can take a little while to readjust to home after a trip so give yourself some time. If nothing helps, do the easiest thing: just buy a ticket and head somewhere new!

What Is Your Advice On Booking Your Tickets Or Tours Through Travel Agents?

Travel agencies can be useful for some trips, such as weddings, cruises, honeymoons, group tours, etc. But in all the other situations, you will find much better deals by yourself.

Personally, we rarely book anything through an agent.

Should I Travel Alone Or With A Group Of Friends?

It totally and completely depends on you. Traveling with a group of friends is usually cheaper, because you can rent a car or an apartment and split the price instead of booking a single room in a hotel or flying everywhere.

It is also more fun! However, if you are a little bit of an anti-social person, you will probably feel more comfortable traveling alone, or with a person you love.

If you prefer to travel solo, you should check out our Adventure Travel page, the solo travel section particularly. There you will find useful advice about traveling alone.

Should I Take A Group Tour Or Explore A New Place Independently?

It’s up to you. If you don’t feel confident when traveling independently even within your own country, then an organized tour will probably be a better option for you. But! We assume you’ll never know if you like independent travel if you never try.

O f course, if you travel independently you will have more to arrange and organize. In exchange, you get more freedom, fun, valuable experiences, knowledge, and it is also likely that you will spend less on the same trip!

What Do You Do If You Get Tired Od Traveling? If Everything Starts Looking Like You’ve Already Seen It Before?

If you start to get tired of traveling, then stop. Take a break and stay in one place for a while. When you feel that the desire to travel has returned, then pack up and hit the road again.

There is no need to push yourself, traveling is meant to be a joyful experience, so take as long as you need to rest and recuperate.

Personally, we have not yet had this feeling so we don’t really know what it feels like. We still have a LOT of places we want to see before we die! One thing perhaps that works for us to keep our wanderlust alive is traveling to different geographies, cultures, and in different seasons!

For example, if you are tired of seeing the museums and cafes of Europe, then try South America or South East Asia ! If you are tired of skiing, then go to the deserts of Sahara or Namibia!

If you are tired of crowded places, go for a safari or visit the National Parks! Immerse yourself in the vastness of Alaska or Chile ! If you mix your travel destinations, you will not get bored easily!

Will Not Having A College Degree Affect My Ability To Travel? Can I Study And Get A Degree Online While On The Road?

If you do not have a college degree that will not impact your travel at all. No one will ask for your diploma when you check into a hotel or buy an airplane ticket.

Also, getting a degree online is quite easy now. We are living in the digital era, right? Ideally, you should take advantage of gap years and try for doing some semesters abroad!

You don’t have to drop out of college to travel. Use your summer and winter breaks! Take a semester or year off and go out to a different country and do some volunteering work!

This will not only improve your experience of college but will also help your resume and employability!

I Am Thinking About Quitting College And Traveling. Should I Do It?

First, please read the question above and our answer to that. Next, this is totally up to you, but we don’t recommend.

It is never too late to start traveling. You can always try yourself as a travel blogger or a travel photographer. It may seem easy, but it’s really not.

Starting and developing a travel blog requires a huge effort and, most importantly, money. Also, most people give up quickly, not receiving the result immediately.

However, education will never be a bargain and may become a great backup plan in many life situations. So, think twice before quitting and don’t rush into anything.

How Do You Cope With Loneliness When Traveling Alone?

Traveling alone has its pros and cons. Sometimes you can feel lonely . On the other hand, while traveling you always meet new people and have new experiences, so it is hard to feel totally alone.

Nevertheless, if you feel down, avoid sightseeing for a day and just stay in your hostel watching a movie. There is always someone to talk to in a hostel kitchen while sipping a cup of hot tea or coffee.

52 out of 55. Decent quiz, I enjoyed that. Thought the Hell pit was in Uzbekistan for some reason. I thought the island of spice was Cuba... Idiot Knew Callanish was Scottish but answered as Ireland when doing the quiz.

That's a great effort Craig, well done!

Saturday 30th of January 2021

I didn't do too well, but enjoyed it a lot. Just one small point: Germany's flag is made up of the colours red, black and gold, not yellow. It dates back to the Prussian resistance against Napoleonic rule. Volunteer soldiers wore black uniforms with red buttons and golden trimmings. The colours became a symbol of freedom and nation. Thanks for the great quiz.

These Were the Most Searched for Travel Destinations of 2023, According to Google

This past year, we daydreamed about, googled, and planned trips to these places more than any others..

Spain was one of the countries travelers searched for the most often in 2023.

The first thing I do when I’m thinking about a trip is to start googling my destination. Although I’m AFAR’s resident SEO expert and search-engine obsessive, my habit is hardly unique—more than 8.5 billion searches are made in Google each day. When we look at the data from all of these searches, it reveals a lot about our collective travel daydreams and can help answer questions like, “What travel destinations were the most popular in 2023?”

Using Google’s Destinations Insights tool, which looks at travel-related searches to measure interest in a particular region, country, or city, I decided to find out. To compile this list, I focused searches made within the United States between January 1st, 2023, and December 1st, 2023. I also filtered searches to only focus on those tied to accommodations instead of accommodations and air travel, in order to filter out air travel searches made by international citizens flying home throughout the year. The tool also does not have a way to distinguish between business and leisure travel, so the lists below reflect searches by a mix of both.

Although searches don’t always equal trips booked, they can help us understand where in the world travelers are most interested in going. Here are the 10 cities and 10 countries that U.S. travelers searched for the most in 2023.

The top-searched cities overall

In 2023, U.S.-based searchers googled trips to these 10 cities more frequently than any other. Not surprisingly, travelers were searching for trips to cities closer to home, with locales in the USA, Mexico , and Dominican Republic filling out the top 10 spots on this list.

  • Los Angeles
  • Cancún, Mexico
  • Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
  • New Orleans

The top-searched international cities

When filtering out domestic destinations, the list looks different. Although cities in Mexico and the Caribbean still remain popular for U.S. travelers, other iconic cities throughout the world appear. In 2023, these were the most-searched-for international cities by U.S.-based travelers:

  • London, England
  • Paris, France
  • Rome, Italy
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
  • Barcelona, Spain
  • Playa del Carmen, Mexico

According to the tool, which considers San Juan, Puerto Rico, an international destination, San Juan was the 10th-most-searched-for international city. However, if we bucket U.S. territories as a domestic destination, then Playa del Carmen in Mexico takes the 10th spot.

The top-searched countries

Continuing to look at international travel, these are the 10 countries that were most searched for in 2023:

  • Dominican Republic
  • United Kingdom

Note that Google’s Destination Insights tool lists Puerto Rico as the 10th-most-searched-for country. If we consider U.S. territories as a domestic destination, then Thailand comes in at number 10 for countries. Otherwise, Puerto Rico is at number 10.

How we collected this data

To make the most comprehensive list of the most searched questions on Google, we first segment our database of 25B+ keywords to isolate all the questions. We then used a set of heuristics to eliminate those that weren't talked about very much over the past month. This leaves us with a list of about 10-20,000 questions. From there, we run those through our search volume tool, which is trusted by top institutions from the New York Times to IKEA then we simply sort by the questions with the most searches.

Note that when we calculate the most searched questions on Google in 2024, for example, we are calculating the questions where their searches reached the highest peak during the timeframe of any given month .

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

The government's 'urgent' migration bill has been parked, but questions remain

oneil patterson

On Tuesday, the government surprised the parliament with a bill that could force the hand of people who obstruct deportation, and threaten countries with travel bans if they refuse to accept deportees.

The motivation was obvious, even if the government has been decidedly reluctant to acknowledge it directly.

The High Court is considering the case of an Iranian man, known by the pseudonym ASF17, who fits the description of a man resisting deportation. And Iran fits the description of a country that refuses to accept deportees who come unwillingly.

Should the High Court find in favour of ASF17, the government would have a larger set of individuals it must make alternative arrangements for.

That would be a very similar position to the one it found itself in when it had to release 150 detainees after an earlier High Court case last year, which it navigated with great difficulty.

This new bill, as Home Affairs secretary Stephanie Foster told a Senate committee on Tuesday night, would give the government extra "tools" to deal with this fresh case, should it go against the government.

But in that hastily-convened, late-night Senate hearing, senators from the Coalition and the crossbench had a bevy of other questions about the bill that could not be answered.

And though the Coalition and the Greens had very different questions, they joined forces to delay the bill until May, frustrating the government's desire for swift passage and opening up weeks of deliberation.

Three key questions will need to be explored.

What is the purpose of the 'travel ban'?

One component of the government's bill would give the immigration minister the power to impose an effective travel ban on countries who make deportation difficult.

For example, there are a handful of countries who refuse to accept involuntary returns, including Iran, Iraq, South Sudan, Zimbabwe and Russia.

And the department pointed to a second category of countries with no such rule, but which choose to make things difficult for the government anyway. Those countries might also be captured by a ban.

But any ban would not apply automatically. The minister would have to decide to make a designation, in consultation with the prime minister and foreign minister.

And officials were quick to emphasise they didn't imagine this power would necessarily be used. Instead, it was described as "leverage" – a country making life difficult could be threatened to comply with the prospect of a ban, but the ban itself would be a last resort.

Still the bill would give the government a power to enact a ban which it does not currently have. Officials declined to point to any countries who might be "leveraged", citing diplomatic sensitivities.

Who, exactly, does this apply to?

The first component of the government's bill would give the immigration minister the power to compel certain people to facilitate their own deportation.

Those people could be ordered to apply for passports and board flights to their country of origin, or a third country. Non-compliance would carry a mandatory minimum one-year prison sentence, up to a maximum of five years.

The simple description of who this can apply to is: any non-citizen who has exhausted all legal avenues to remain. But it quickly gets more complicated.

First, this includes 150–200 people who are currently in immigration detention and who, according to the department, are obstructing their own deportation.

Second, it includes some of the 150 people released from detention last year after the NZYQ High Court ruling. Those people were deemed to have no realistic prospect of deportation, and the High Court said that made their detention unlawful.

But the department believes these new powers would open up the possibility of deportation in some of those cases, though officials were reluctant to say how many.

Third, it could also apply to a much larger group of people currently living in the community on Bridging Visa E.

That group includes the "Medevac" cohort, a large number of people who have been found to be refugees, but who are unable to obtain permanent residency in Australia owing to government policy, because they arrived by boat.

Many in this cohort have already been resettled in third countries, such as the United States or New Zealand, where the government has struck a deal.

But those who remain, for whatever reason, could under this bill be compelled to facilitate their own deportation. This may be to the US, New Zealand or some other country.

Some people could also be forced to return to their country of origin, because the bill would give the government the power to reassess a previous determination it has made that someone on a Bridging Visa E is owed protection.

But the government has suggested this would not apply to the Medevac cohort, since their refugee claims are not managed by Australia.

The department could not confirm how many people on bridging visas would be covered. There are thousands of people on bridging visas, but Ms Foster said it would likely be a small percentage of those.

Orders to comply with deportation would not automatically apply to everyone in this cohort. They could be applied by the government on a case-by-case basis.

Why the urgency?

At a press conference on Wednesday, Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil and Immigration Minister Andrew Giles struggled to answer why the bill needed to be passed this week. When asked whether it was because of the High Court case, Ms O'Neil said it would be inappropriate to comment.

But the government's concerns about that case are known. Earlier this year, Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus asked for the case to be fast-tracked to the High Court, a signal the government was already thinking about its implications. And the Senate committee heard the department began drafting the bill in early March.

Departmental officials were also reluctant to directly link the case and the bill. Ms Foster only went as far as to say the bill would help the government to handle an ASF17 loss but did not say this was the motivation for the bill.

Those word games were enough for the Coalition to decide to delay the bill. Shadow Home Affairs spokesperson James Paterson said the Coalition had "begged" officials to give a reason for the urgency, but he was not satisfied with their answers.

"They couldn't explain how many people this would affect. They couldn't explain what the consequences would be for any upcoming High Court cases. They couldn't explain how or when they would use this legislation or who it would apply to," he said.

Greens senator David Shoebridge was similarly scathing that officials could not say who the legislation would apply to. He said the bill was likely to end up challenged in the High Court if not properly scrutinised and called Tuesday night's hearing a "sham".

The result is a few more months to answer all these questions.
