The Best Duck Ponds Near Los Angeles

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck then kids love it!  Here are our favorite duck ponds around Los Angeles that your kids will go quackers for, as all of them let your little ducklings get up close and personal with their feathered friends.

Anthony C. Bielsen Park & Lake Balboa at Sunset

Lake Balboa at Anthony C. Beilenson Park This popular South Valley park is open sunrise to sunset and is a popular attraction for both families and nature lovers. The centerpiece of the park is Lake Balboa, a 27-acre lake that, in addition to the beautiful scenery, acts as a preserve to the hundreds of ducks and wildlife that call it home. In addition to walking the 1.3 mile path surrounding the lake, you can also enjoy a leisurely afternoon of fishing or boating from any of the designated areas or launch ramps. With BBQ pits, picnic benches, playgrounds and bike rentals it’s easy to spend the whole day here. Just keep in mind that because Lake Balboa is a wildlife preserve, they ask that you  do not feed these ducks in order to protect their migration habits. So leave the bread at home or use it to feed your own ducklings instead.

Heavenly Pond at Franklin Canyon Tucked away in the hills off Mulholland and Coldwater, Franklin Canyon Park is 605 acres of wilderness heaven. Located between Beverly Hills and the San Fernando Valley, Franklin Canyon is not only a piece of Hollywood history, but also home to the many ducks that reside at Heavenly Pond year-round. When looking for on-site parking, take your time driving through and stop fully at STOP signs, as patrons have been known to get tickets from the eye-in-the-sky cameras. Past the main parking lot there’s another lot closer to Franklin Canyon Lake. To the west of the lake, a stroller friendly walk will bring you to the small pond alive with ducks, turtles and koi fish eager to entertain your small flock of curious kiddos. Pack a lunch to enjoy at one of the few benches beside the pond or walk a little further east to the picnic grounds by the Sooky Goldman Nature Center.  If you choose to bring the four-legged family members along for the fun, the park asks that they remain on leashes so as not to disturb the wildlife.  Here are more of our tips for exploring Franklin Canyon .

Echo Park Lake Eastsiders take refuge in glorious Echo Park where they bask in the sun, shade and gorgeous views of down town LA. This park tends to be busier later in the day so if crowds aren’t your thing plan to make it a morning affair. Although the fun is ample, the parking is not, so be prepared to circle the lake to find the perfect spot.

Douglas Park

Douglas Park This popular urban park in Santa Monica has a relaxing, fun vibe and is great for both toddlers and older kids. While the big kids “take to the streets” in the designated bike and scooter area, the toddlers toddle free within the fenced -n playground geared toward kids ages 5 & under. Across the beautiful green grass you’ll find 3 reflecting pools and a mini flowing river that double as a duck and turtle pond with a quaint little bridge ideal for taking pictures or playing “Pooh sticks.” A popular spot for weekend parties, this park has lots of family fun opportunities including a lawn bowling green, two lighted tennis courts and splash pad (open during the summer months). An onsite restroom and clubhouse available for reservations make this an ideal spot for birthday parties, too.

Polliwog Park Encompassing 18 acres in Manhattan Beach, Polliwog Park is the largest park in the South Bay. The beautiful focal point of Polliwog is the large pond that is bordered on one side by a natural wildlife refuge and is a popular stopping ground for flocks of migratory birds. Dogs are welcomed, but for the sake of the feathered inhabitants, are required to enjoy the park from the designated dog run. In the summer be prepared to rock out with the ducks and geese of Polliwog Park as the park hosts evening concerts in the amphitheater overlooking the pond. While you may appreciate the exercise course for strength training, your little ones will love the 3 different play areas and running through the refreshing misters. Pack a cooler and take advantage of one of the 6 BBQs offered in the picnic area. After lunch take your flock on a tour of the grounds. In addition to the beautiful Rose Garden and the City’s Historical Museum, the southwest corner of the park is where you’ll find the Manhattan Beach Botanical Gardens, which is open to the public on a regular basis. Restrooms are readily available and ample shade is sure to make everyone happy. There are no parking lots on park grounds so your best bet is to find curbside parking along Redondo Avenue and Manhattan Beach Boulevard.

Turtle Fun at CSUN Pond

Currently Closed: Cal State University Northridge (CSUN) Pond Although this pond may technically be on a college campus, the peaceful site is open to the public. Nestled within a protected historical site of Orange Groves, ducks, turtles and Koi fish happily coexist in this sweet little pond. Turtle and Duck food is available for a quarter from a feeder but bringing your own bread or Cheerios is OK, too. Though sunny over the pond, there is ample shade beneath the fragrant orange trees or inside the lovely gazebo adjacent to the pond. If the smell of oranges is just too tempting, go ahead and help yourself, the campus permits orange picking. When school is in session, parking on the campus is tough but there is ample street parking off of Nordhoff or the neighboring residential streets.

Currently Closed: Los Encinos State Historic Park  Open Wednesday-Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., this state park is a hidden valley gem. Luscious green grass, fragrant citrus trees, ample seating and BBQ pits make this park very inviting for long, lazy afternoons. Tucked away in a residential neighborhood at the corner of Balboa and Ventura Blvd in Encino, it’s more than just a duck pond. A historical site with rich California history, Los Encinos State Historic Park is also home to beautiful Rancho El Encino. This California rancho includes a blacksmith shop as well as the original nine-room de la Ossa Adobe, which are available for free guided tours by appointment. There’s also the two-story limestone Garnier building, which is open for self-guided tours during regular park hours. When you’re done learning about the past, come enjoy the present. Bring your quarters and grab a handful of duck food from the feeders surrounding the fenced in pond and let the little ones have fun feeding the many families of ducks that call this beautiful pond home.

Reseda Park Located at the corner of Reseda and Victory Blvd, this park is a nice retreat in a busy part of town. A popular weekend spot, there is something to keep everyone in your family entertained sunrise to sunset. The little ones will have tons of fun in the fenced-in playground while the bigger kids enjoy the outdoor basketball, tennis or volleyball courts. When the summer heat gets too hot to handle, take a dip in the public pool or enjoy the picnic and grilling areas year round. A quick walk behind the 2 baseball diamonds will bring you right to the quaint duck pond overlooking the LA River. There aren’t any feeders at this pond so packing your own duck-friendly food is a must if lunching with the flock is on your agenda.

6 Great Spots For Peking Duck In LA

6 Great Spots For Peking Duck In LA image

February 5, 2024

Peking duck is one of China’s most recognizable dishes, with a centuries-old history that dates back to when it was served in the Beijing Imperial Court. These days, we’re happy to report you no longer have to live within a royal palace to enjoy this epic spread. All you need is a few friends or family members and about an hour of advance notice given to the restaurant. Then the parade of tender duck, and crispy skin, will be yours. In LA, here are the best spots to get it.

Duck House image

When ordering peking duck at Duck House, the menu is broken into three tiers: For $79, you get a whole roasted duck with a traditional spread. For $91, you get the duck “two ways”: the traditional spread and one other duck dish of your choice (bean sprouts, soup, or a deep-fried duck bone.) The third tier, at $103, comes with the traditional spread and two duck dishes. There’s a lot to parse, so we’ll keep it simple. Get the second tier and order the bean sprouts as your extra dish. They’re warm, savory, and the perfect complement to the rich duck.

Capital Seafood Beverly Hills image

Capital Seafood Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills

Capital Seafood is a classic SGV dim sum chain with a massive location in Beverly Hills. If you only order one thing here, make sure it’s the Peking duck. This juicy platter of poultry gets rubbed with five-spice, which brings out the meat’s rich, fatty flavor. Its slow-roasted skin is so crispy and golden-brown, you’d think it spent an afternoon in a lifeguard chair. And each precisely carved slice shatters into pleasantly crispy pieces with every bite. You’ll also get a classic platter of pillowy bao buns, scallion matchsticks, and hoisin sauce to go along with it.

The peking duck at Ji Rong.

Ji Rong Peking Duck

If you want traditional peking duck in the SGV, it doesn’t get more classic than Ji Rong. The $85 spread at this casual sit-down spot in Rosemead includes sides of shredded cucumber and green onions, sweet bean sauce, and a basket of flaky pancakes. There’s also a separate plate with the duck’s crispy legs, too. The main event is a show-stopping mini-mountain of meat surrounded by glistening strips of crisp skin. Duck is a testy dish, but the one here is a model of consistency. Just be sure you call 75 minutes ahead of time to get one.

Meizhou Dongpo Restaurant image

Meizhou Dongpo

Century City

Eating an entire peking duck at the mall sounds equal parts outrageous and incredible (because it is). Meizhou Dongpo is a place to partake in such luxuries. Located inside the Westfield Century Mall, this Beijing-based restaurant serves a whole duck for $89, which comes neatly sliced on a cute duck-shaped platter. The meat is plump, and the glossy, deeply browned skin crackles in your mouth. It’s an indulgent meal that easily beats any food court option, so consider splurging on a whole duck before a night at AMC.

Peking duck at Bistro Na's.

Bistro Na's

Temple City

You'll need to order Bistro Na’s peking duck two days in advance, but trust us, it's worth the hassle. This restaurant in Temple City specializes in upscale Chinese Imperial cuisine, which is to say, you won't find your typical duck experience. This $98 Peking duck is moist with skin that’s shiny like caramels at See’s Candies. The chef brings your bird to the table (so you can send a picture to your mom) then it disappears and returns carved, with thin handmade pancakes, green onion, and sweet bean sauce. Choose between having the leftover bits made into soup or, for an additional $30, a salt and pepper stir-fry with sichuan peppercorns and fresh chilis.

The peking duck at Fortune House.

Fortune House

Mid-Wilshire

Fortune House in Beverly Grove serves some of our favorite Chinese-American food in the area, like soy-sauce-tinged chow mein, orange peel chicken, and siu mai the size of tangerines. But the best excuse for a sit-down meal here is the reasonably priced peking duck. A whole one costs $57 and is carved tableside. The skin is so crispy it shatters like candy, the breast meat is juicy, and it comes with a tin of steamed bao buns, plus the usual accompaniments like green onion and sweet bean sauce. And then there’s the bonus meal, which consists of the bird’s legs and back meat in their salty drippings that you snack on like ribs.

What is a duck boat? A look at the popular tour boats used around the country

KABC logo

Duck boats are a staple of the tourism industry in waterfront cities across America. From Seattle to Washington, D.C., tourists board specialized vehicles designed to drive down the street just as easily as they can navigate a harbor.

Though the exact vehicles may vary from city to city, duck boats are often refurbished DUKW vehicles used by the United States military and its allies throughout the mid-20th century. Built by General Motors , the DUKW vehicles were first deployed during World War II to transport military supplies from ships to the coast without requiring the ships to dock.

With the push of a lever, the vehicles switched from being wheel-operated to being powered by a rear-mounted propeller, and the driver steered both the wheels and the rudder using the same system. The DUKW vehicles also came equipped with a system that allowed the driver to adjust the inflation level of the tires for better flotation or tire traction.

The vehicles reportedly allowed Allied forces to move more than 3 million tons of troops and equipment around the European theater during World War II.

General Motors built more than 21,000 DUKW vehicles during World War II. Though some of them remained in military service until the 1960s, many eventually ended up with local law enforcement agencies or private tour companies.

Original Wisconsin Ducks in Wisconsin Dells, Wisc., claims to have launched the first duck tour in 1946 . Duck tours utilizing refurbished DUKW vehicles have since popped up in cities around the world.

In many cities, duck tours are independently owned and operated, often under branding like "Ride the Ducks" or "Duck Tours." Many tour companies hand out signature yellow duck lip whistles to customers wishing to quack along during the tour.

Some safety advocates have called the boats unsafe after several high-profile fatal accidents involving the vehicles over the course of the last two decades. In two accidents on the water, the boats either sank or capsized, killing more than a dozen passengers in each incident. The vehicles have also been involved in multiple fatal accidents on roadways.

"Duck boats are death traps," Andrew Duffy, an attorney whose Philadelphia law firm handled litigation related to fatal accidents involving duck boats, told the Associated Press. "They're not fit for water or land because they are half car and half boat."

Advocates claimed that different agencies have imposed varying safety requirements on the boats, the AP reported.

Los Angeles Is Looking Into Duck Boat Tours For The LA River

The Los Angeles City Council is capping off the Year of the LA River with a big idea: duck boat tours . Councilmembers Tom LaBonge and Mitch O'Farrell have proposed a motion (pdf) asking that the relevant groups look into "the development of a duck tour using an amphibious vehicle to conduct tours of the Los Angeles River, its beautiful historic bridges and surrounding neighborhoods." The river was just opened to guided kayak tours for the first time a couple years ago and to self-guided boaters/fishers/walkers this summer ; it officially became a navigable waterway (rather than a flood channel) on January 1, and the US Army Corps of Engineers is right now working on a massive restoration plan . There's also talk that it'll be the centerpiece of LA's 2024 Olympics bid . The duck boat proposal will involve the LA Department of Transportation, the Friends of the Los Angeles River, and the US Army Corps of Engineers, and it's still only in the very early stages--the motion just asks that those groups report on the matter to the relevant City Council committees (the Trade, Commerce and Tourism Committee signed off on that request today; it's also been referred to Arts, Parks, Health, Aging, and River, which is only one committee). The motion notes that Long Beach has duck boat tours, but the company's website says they've gone out of business. · Council File: 13-1216 [LA City Clerk] · LA River Rising [Curbed LA]

Giant rubber duck sails into Port of Los Angeles

KABC logo

SAN PEDRO, Calif. -- The famous giant duck, designed by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, sailed into the Port of Los Angeles early Wednesday morning.

The duck is just one of the attractions at the five-day Festival of Tall Ships.

At 2 p.m., the six-story-tall duck sculpture will lead a parade of domestic and international ships making their way along the Main Channel.

Event organizers say the rubber duck is an impressive sight to see.

"This is 61 feet, 11 tons, about 85 feet wide and about 110 feet long," said Craig Samborski, spokesperson for the Festival of Tall Ships. "I was shocked when I saw the size of it right in front of me."

PHOTOS: Giant rubber duck wows spectators

The event, which runs until Sunday, will also feature ship tours, cannon battles, sword fights, knot-tying and sail-rigging training demonstrations, live music and food trucks. Tickets range from $7 to $350. For more information, visit http://www.tallshipsfestivalla.com .
