The Underwater World of Maui, Hawaii: Atlantis Submarine Adventure

The underwater world of Maui, the second largest island of the Hawaiian Islands chain, abounds with tropical fish, large marine mammals, and expansive coral reefs.

Underwater world of Maui - Roads and Destinations

Maui Underwater Adventure with Atlantis Submarines

Set in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the Hawaiian Islands boast a unique underwater community. The undersea world of Hawaii is so large and diverse that it can hardly ever get predictable.

Consisting of an overabundance of colorful tropical fish, Hawaiian green sea turtles, whales, dolphins, sharks – the main predators in the area – the warm waters of the Hawaiian Islands offer some of the best snorkeling and diving opportunities.

As a non-swimmer, let alone a diver, I could only dream of seeing the rich underwater world of Hawaii during our recent trip to Maui. Not until my brother who by word of mouth had found out about an alternative way to get underwater urged me to book Maui Submarine Tour offered by Atlantis Adventures.

Maui Atlantis Submarine Tour

Seizing large demand, Atlantis Submarines has been opening the underwater world of Maui, Oahu, and Hawaii (The Big Island) for non-divers and travelers with kids since 1988. For more than three decades, the company has introduced the tourists to the local marine wildlife, unveiled underwater treasures, and educated about fragile coral reefs.

As one of the largest providers of this type of entertainment, Atlantis strives to share the beautiful underwater world of Maui in the most organic way so no fish or other marine creatures are disturbed or threatened.

Maui Atlantis Submarine offers a few tours every day. Each group includes 48 people or less, allowing enough room for every visitor to observe the unique undersea world of Hawaii.

The underwater excursion lasts 1 hour 45 minutes. Half of this time, you spend on a boat that takes you to a real submarine “parked” in the Pacific Ocean. The culmination of the Maui underwater excursion happens at the depth of 85-100 feet where tropical fish swim in front of a porthole you are “glued” to, filled with excitement and utmost wonder.

THE UNDERWATER WORLD OF MAUI: ATLANTIS SUBMARINE EXCURSION

1. watching maui marine wildlife from atlantis shuttle boat.

We signed up for the first, 9-o’clock Maui Undersea Adventure of the day. Promptly following instructions, we arrived at Lahaina Harbor around 8:00 a.m. The latest text message the company had sent informed me that free parking could be found on Front Street.

The busiest area of the town was just getting ready for another hectic (which felt so relaxing compared to Los Angeles ) day by the ocean. Yet limited parking spots along the street were long taken. And so were most of the spots at a free parking lot located at the corner of Prison Street and Front Street .

We were lucky to claim one of a few still open spots. With a 3-hour limit the parking lot allowed, we had more than enough time to peek at the Maui underwater world and explore the heart of Lahaina.

At the Maui Atlantis Submarine Stand nestled at the far corner of the harbor, all morning underwater “explorers” were expected to check in 45 minutes prior to the departure. After receiving our tickets, we were free to roam the harbor before boarding the shuttle boat.

Underwater world of Maui - Roads and Destinations

Humpback Whales

Promptly at 9:00 a.m., we along with some other 10 underwater enthusiasts boarded the Atlantis Submarine shuttle boat. The ride to the submarine was about 45 minutes. In reality it wouldn’t take that long had we not stopped to watch humpback whales breaching near the coast of Maui.

Again, we were lucky. On that warm morning in early March, a mother and a baby enjoyed the warm waters of the Pacific, raising their tail flukes out of the water and slapping them on the water’s surface.

The first indication that the whales are near are by their blow. The humpbacks exhale air by breathing out through a blowhole on the top of their head. The air comes out in the form of a spout that at first may look like a column of water.

The mother was less active, though. At one point, our narrator-guide even worried if she was nearby. But the baby whale didn’t hesitate to blow out the air and show himself off.

The humpback whales migrate from cold Alaskan waters to Maui to mate, calve, and rear their babies. The marine mammals reside in the Hawaiian waters from December through March , offering plenty of whale watching opportunities for visitors and locals alike. At the end of March, as if receiving an urgent call, the whales retreat back to Alaska.

2. The Maui Underwater World from the Submarine

On rare occasions, the whales can be seen from a submarine cruising in the ocean. This, however, doesn’t happen often. The whales are smart creatures. And as any intelligent animal, they stay away from anything almost as big as they are.

But the tropical fish don’t feel bothered by the intrusion of the foreign vessel. Butterflyfish, parrotfish, angelfish, yellow tangs, pufferfish, triggerfish, surgeonfish, and many other species can reluctantly swim alongside the submarine.

The Hawaiian Islands, including Maui, are the most remote large island chain on Earth. Roughly 2,200 miles of water isolate Hawaii from the nearest land.

The majority of local marine wildlife can’t travel such longe distances. So they live in the warm waters near Maui, Kauai , Oahu, and Hawaii. In fact, about 30% of the tropical fish in the state can’t be found anywhere else in the world.

The underwater creatures we saw off the shore of Maui dwell in the coral reef valleys. Covered with algae, the reefs provide both food and protection for the tropical fish.

The coral reef itself is a remarkable marine environment. It’s made up of thin layers of calcium carbonate that is very sensitive to touch. Any careless action can damage or kill fragile living creatures that create this unique underwater ecosystem. Restoration may take years and years as the coral reef grows extremely slowly, at an approximate rate of about 0.2 to 0.8 cm a year.

Coral reef bleaching is another important issue that affects the ocean. The Maui underwater world is somewhat safe in this department. Water temperatures here range between 75 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

These cooler waters, compared to other tropical islands, protect the reefs from bleaching. Unfortunately with climate change, even Hawaii sees increased incidences of coral reef bleaching.

Underwater world of Maui - Roads and Destinations.

Artificial Reef

After introducing its visitors to the coral reef in the Maui area, the captain navigated the submarine toward an artificial reef aka a shipwreck. Once a floating museum, the Carthaginian II sits 97 feet under the surface off the coast of Maui. Over the years, it has become a safe haven for many tropical fish that look for protection along the algae covered deck.

Schools of frogfish, trumpetfish, orange spine unicorn fish, rainbow cleaner wrasse flock to the shipwreck. Some swim above the sunken vessel. Others hide inside its water-filled cabins. At the seabed, right under the wreck, juvenile sharks often snuggle after an apparently abundant feast.

The Carthaginian II was a replica of a whaler that was destroyed on April 2, 1973. Serving as a bridge that united Lahaina’s past and present for a long time, the ship-museum turned into a very costly project at the end of its existence. Lahaina Restoration Foundation was spending nearly $50,000 a year to keep the vessel afloat.

In 2003, the foundation approached Maui Atlantis Adventures with a proposal to turn the Carthaginian II into an artificial reef. Two years later, on December 13, the ship was towed away from its anchorage and sunk.

Lack of Colors in the Underwater World of Maui

On that eventful spring morning, the Maui underwater world looked dull. Spoiled by images of the Great Barrier Reef, I expected to see vibrant red, yellow, and green tones. The Maui coral reef looked nothing like that. A lot of blue hues and sporadic yellow fish tails prevailed.

I was not the only one puzzled by the Maui subdued underwater realm. The explanation came almost at the end of the tour. As the submarine started surfacing, the tones in the water and inside the vessel were becoming brighter and more vivid.

The colors indeed disappear under the water. The water absorbs different wavelengths of light to different degrees. Red, one of the longest wavelengths with the lowest energy, is usually absorbed first. Orange and yellow closely follow it.

Blue and violet penetrate best and are often the prevailing colors in the underwater world off the coast of Maui.

Things to Know before Joining Maui Undersea Tour

The Maui Underwater tours come with a hefty price, around $150-180. But the experience is well worth it. The tours are operated all year round and sell quickly during the peak season. So make sure to book them in advance.

Whale Watching Opportunities

While not the primary purpose, Atlantis Submarine Tours on Maui offer a great opportunity to see some whales. The chances of enjoying playful shows presented by these massive marine creatures increase tremendously from December through March, otherwise known as whale watching season on Maui .

Morning Tours

Normally, the early morning tours don’t get picked as fast as the later submarine excursions. During our underwater adventure, only about 15 of us arrived at Lahaina Harbor for the 9-o’clock “dive”. We sat on one side of the submarine and were able to see more of the Maui underwater world than any members of larger groups usually do.

So I’d say, go for the first submarine dive of the day and hope that the majority of the Maui visitors prefer to sleep in.

Paid Parking

If you’ve missed all free parking spots, park at a paid parking lot. One of the closest ones is located at 155 Dickenson Street.

Currently, since this submarine ride in Maui is in Lahaina, which was affected by the fires, it is currently not running until August 2024.

Atlantis Submarine Tour on Maui

The Atlantis Adventure Submarine Tour ticket office caught my eye while walking on Front Street in Lahaina with my family.

It was perfect timing.

We were leaving Maui the next evening and had just been talking about what we were going to do on our last day. Check-out time was eleven o’clock and our flight home wasn’t until eight o’clock in the evening so we had some time to kill.

Things to Do on Maui: Atlantis Submarine Tour featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids | The Atlantis Submarine is a fun Maui tour for kids

I threw out the idea of taking a submarine tour in Maui to my husband and six-year-old son and they both thought it would be fun.

The Atlantis Submarine Maui tour was something we’d never done and it sounded like the perfect activity for our last day in Maui. We decided to go ahead and book the Lahaina submarine ride.

Our seven days on Maui had been full of adventure. We’d driven the Road to Hana and stayed at the Wai’anapanapa State Park Cabins for the first half of our trip. The last half was spent exploring the other side of the island near Lahaina.

We hadn’t done a single tour and thought the Maui submarine tour would be a nice addition to our trip. And we were not disappointed with this Maui submarine adventure.

In fact, the Atlantis Submarine tour ended up being one of the highlights of our trip.

Atlantis Maui Submarine Booking Tips

You will want to book your Lahaina submarine tour in advance if you are visiting Maui any time in late December through March or June through August. Our tour guide said during the busy months every tour is sold out.

We were able to buy our tickets the day of our tour because it was October, one of the slower travel months in Maui.

Check the Atlantis Submarine website for any online deals. The online deal in October was one free child seat with the purchase of an adult seat.

It’s also worth your time to stop into the Lahaina office on Front Street if you are staying nearby. We purchased our tickets at the office the day of the tour and were offered the free child online deal plus ten dollars off.

Book a Maui submarine ride in the middle of the day so you can watch the submarine before you rise up and the one after you go down, it’s really interesting to see.

*Children must be over 36 inches tall to participate in the tour and under twelve years old to qualify for the child fare.

Before Your Maui Atlantis Submarine Tour

There is a free parking lot on the corner of Front Street and Prison Street but it usually fills up first thing in the morning.

It’s worth a drive around to see if anyone is leaving but keep in mind that you can only park there for three hours.

Things to Do on Maui: Atlantis Submarine Tour featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids | You'll wait for your Maui Atlantis Submarine Tour at Lahaina Harbor

The Lahaina submarine tour takes one hour and forty-five minutes and it is recommended that you arrive at the dock a half hour before your tour.

If you plan to go to lunch or walk around Lahaina you will probably want to park in a pay lot so you don’t have to worry about moving your car.  You shouldn’t have a problem finding an available spot in a pay lot and there are several near the marina.

We were instructed to meet at the dock across the street from the gigantic Banyan tree.  Several rows of covered bench seats are available so you can sit in the shade while you wait.

Things to Do on Maui: Atlantis Submarine Tour featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids | You'll take a shuttle boat to the Maui Atlantis Submarine

The submarine is located about a half mile off shore so you will take a boat shuttle out to the submarine. The short boat ride is actually a nice added bonus. We’d never taken a boat out of Lahaina harbor and the views from the boat were stunning.

maui underwater tour

Boarding the Maui Atlantis Submarine

After watching the submarine rise to the surface, the captain will tie the shuttle boat up to the submarine.

Everyone in your group will move to one side of the boat so the passengers exiting the submarine can sit on the other side. The tour groups are relatively small, there are only 48 seats on the submarine.

We could tell the exiting passengers loved their Atlantis submarine ride from the huge smiles on their faces. Seeing them got us even more excited to board the submarine.

Boarding the submarine is a very organized process.

Complete groups are called up together and directed to alternating entrance ports. A steep 10-step ladder is used to board the Submarine.

It doesn’t make a difference if you board first or last because every seat in the submarine has a window.

The submarine has air conditioning and each seat is equipped with an air vent similar to what you would find on an airplane.

Our Maui Atlantis Submarine Experience

Actually going underwater in a submarine is a surreal experience.

After everyone is seated, the captain does a countdown and off you go to the bottom of the ocean. It’s a neat perspective if you look up at the other boat on top of the water as you head down.

Things to Do on Maui: Atlantis Submarine Tour featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids | We saw a sunken ship on our Maui Atlantis Submarine Tour in Lahaina, Maui

The Atlantis Submarines Maui Lahaina tour starts at a natural coral reef and goes on to view a sunken ship. The submarine turns around at each attraction so passengers on both sides of the submarine have a great view.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and told us all about all the different kinds of fish we encountered. We saw puffer fish, a few manta rays, and all different kinds of reef fish, and were even lucky enough to see an octopus.

The only thing we didn’t see on our tour that we were hoping to see was a shark. Our guide told us that he’d seen sharks on every other of the Maui submarine tours that day so it is common to see sharks.

Things to Do on Maui: Atlantis Submarine Tour featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids | Families will love checking out the depth meter on the Atlantis Submarine tour in Maui

The forty-five minutes we were underwater flew by.  We were all so mesmerized by what we saw. It was an incredible experience.

After passing the sunken ship and diving to a depth of 130 feet, we headed back up to the surface, exited the submarine, and got back on the boat.

This time we were the group with huge smiles on our faces.

We got to watch as the submarine descended into the water with the next group on board before heading back to the harbor.

Maui Submarine Tours

Atlantis submarines maui.

maui underwater tour

Submerge yourself in a different world, where your air becomes ocean, your foliage is a coral garden, and your vehicle is one of the world's most sophisticated submarines. Explore Maui's underwater paradise to a depth of 130' aboard the Atlantis 48 passenger submarine. Spacious, air conditioned surroundings and extra-large viewing ports allow you to relax and enjoy the wonders of the deep in your one hour adventure.

The major underwater attraction on Maui is the sunken remains of the "Carthaginian," a replica whaling ship that was a sort of "floating museum" docked at the entrance to Lahaina Harbor for decades. The aging attraction became too difficult and too expensive to maintain, and its location just outside the harbor wasn't exactly a good spot for an unscheduled shipwreck. Atlantis Submarines proposed a plan to tow the ship offshore south of the Lahaina and to intentionally sink it knowing that it would attract a host of sea life. On December 13, 2005 after two years of preparation the plan was carried out, and it has done just that. The wreckage of the "Carthaginian" is seen on all the Maui Atlantis Submarine dives.

There is no minimum age, but the minimum height for Atlantis Submarine is 36". Each guest is required to independently navigate a nearly vertical 10-step ladder into and out of the submarine.

$148.00 per Adult, $66.00 per Child (12 and under) (plus 7.712% Hawaii sales/harbor tax)

$149.00 per Adult, $59.00 per Child (12 and under) (plus 7.712% Hawaii sales/harbor tax)

Atlantis Submarines also offers the MAUI VALUE PASS! For $25 more you get the submarine tour, as well as tickets to the Maui Ocean Center Aquarium (a $25 value), the Maui Tropical Plantation tram tour (an $8 value), and the Bailey House Museum (a $7 value). You must do the submarine tour first so that you can pick up your tickets for the other 3. This is an excellent entertainment value!

$188.00 per Adult, $80.00 per Child (12 and under) (plus 7.712% Hawaii sales/harbor tax)

Atlantis Submarines also offers the SUBMARINE / LUAU COMBO which offers the submarine experience followed by an evening at the Royal Lahaina Luau.

NOTE: Payment for Atlantis Submarine dive is required at the time this reservation is made. Atlantis Submarines will charge your credit card in full for your seats when your date and time is confirmed by their office.

Cruise Ship Clients

Ship icon

NCL cruise ship passengers are able do the Atlantis Submarines on the afternoon of the first day or the morning of the second day in port in Kahului. The drive to Lahaina takes an hour and we can arrange a rental car with shuttle pick-up at the harbor. The Maui Value Pass is also possible, but you should do the submarine on the first day so you have time to do the other events on day 2.

Lahaina cruise ship passengers can do Atlantis Submarines since it departs from the same harbor in Lahaina where your cruise ship tender arrives. We don't recommend the Maui Value Pass for Lahaina cruise ship passengers because all the other included events are in central Maui and require a drive of 45+ minutes.

If your cruise ship is making a call in Kona, we recommend you do Atlantis Submarines there instead as the check in location is right across the street from the dock where the cruise ship tenders arrive. See our Big Island Submarine page.

Reef Dancer Semi-submersible

maui underwater tour

  • 75 Minute "Dive": Adults $49.95, Children (4-12) $21.95, Infants 3 & Under $5.95

(7.3% tax/harbor fee added to all tours)

Reefdancer will be in dry dock and unavailable for tours from January 26 to February 28 2022.

Maui's best shallow water reef tour is offered by the Reefdancer. You can enjoy the beauty of the West Maui Mountains on the top deck, or go down below where the reef will dazzle you. This is the family-friendly way to view the reef since children of all ages are welcome on these tours. All trips are now 75 minutes in length and offered daily at 8:30am, 10:00am,11:30am, 1:15pm, and 2:45pm.

The Reefdancer is considered a "semi-submersible." While the entire vessel never submerges, it is one huge step up from a "glass-bottom boat" because the downstairs compartment is always "one story down" from the ocean's surface and guests look out the large viewports for superior reef viewing. A scuba diver brings a variety of sea creatures to the windows for close-up views by guests, a feature that the kids love.

NCL cruise ship passengers are able do the Reefdancer on the afternoon of the first day or the morning of the second day in port in Kahului. The drive to Lahaina takes an hour and we can arrange a rental car with shuttle pick-up at the harbor.

Lahaina cruise ship passengers can do Reefdancer and there is no transportation required since it departs from the same harbor in Lahaina where your cruise ship tender arrives.

ACTIVITY TIPS

Kevin at Falls

It is just amazing how different the world appears the moment you stick your head under the surface of the ocean. It's like exploring a different planet with a different atmosphere ... one made up of liquid instead of air. The beauty of the reef and the creatures that call it home are a must-see on your vacation to Hawaii.

The two vessels on this page serve a very different purpose. Atlantis Submarines is a TRUE submarine in every sense of the word. It is a pressurized submarine that descends to a depth of about 100 feet and explores reef and a shipwreck lying on the bottom. It is a remarkable experience to descend to that depth and it gives you a "Jacques Cousteau-like" adventure. There are access issues for the submarine. Children shorter than 36" are not permitted because they aren't tall enough to negotiate the rungs of the nearly vertical ladder on the way down into the sub. And this is not an excursion for those who are mobility-impared in any way. Because of this ladder all guests must be physically capable of descending independently into the passenger compartment. Oh one cool tip for video ... wear a red shirt on the sub, and while you are descending and ascending point the video camera at yourself. The color red just disappears as the sub descends into the blue and it is fun to watch this color change happen when you play back your video.

The Reefdancer doesn't actually submerge, but specializes in showing off the reef that is in 20 feet of water or less. Actually most of the fish and ocean critters are found in this range, and of course there is a lot more sunlight hitting everything. The Reefdancer is basically a "snorkel trip for people who don't want to get wet." It is a great choice for little kids who are too young to use snorkel gear, or grandma who doesn't want to get her hair wet. And access to the viewing area below is just a normal set of stairs with handrails. Guests are free to sit underwater and look out the window, or at any time they can go up the stairs and out onto the deck above the surface.

    • Submarine Tours

Maui submarine tours are an incredibly fun way to check out what lives beneath the sea’s surface.

We have two exciting options. The Atlantis Submarine goes completely underwater, and the Reefdancer Semi-Sub stays half in, half out! Both Maui submarine tours bring you close to marine life in the wild in the most comfortable manner possible. You simply relax, fall in love with the fish outside the windows, and stay dry!

Atlantis Submarine descends from the surface to 100 feet below. You will travel to three specific sites underwater. Fish are beautifully abundant in each location. You will even visit the sunken ship, the Carthaginian ! This huge movie prop was brought to the bottom on purpose to create the base for a coral reef. As you will see when you get there, that plan is working just fine! Your vessel is maneuvered gracefully by a pilot and co-pilot who are naturalists, too. They will answer all your questions and give you great information.

This is one of the excellent Maui submarine tours for the whole family. Kids love matching the fish outside with the fish on the ID cards supplied at each of the giant portholes. There is plenty of space inside the submarine, and the guests are not squashed together like sardines. Speaking of sardines, you won’t see those here in Maui, but do look for schools of manini on the reefs!

The Reefdancer is suspended between sea and air, which gives you the best of both worlds! All year long, the coral reefs here are magical. Let the Reefdancer immerse you in a world of splendor. Spend time in the cool cabin below the water line as the craft explores the ocean habitat. Go upstairs to enjoy the sunlight and sea breezes. What more could you ask for? When the humpback whales are here (December – April), make sure to check up top every once in a while for spouting. Shout out if you see one! On our longer Semi-Sub tour, an excursion scuba diver will bring marine animals to you at the viewing windows! Kids can’t get enough of these up-close encounters.

Both of our Maui submarine tours are air-conditioned and tons of fun for everyone. Climb in and see what’s going on!

As part of our conservation efforts, we actively engage in reef cleanup. It’s not unusual for our guides to take a brief dive down to retrieve debris, in an effort to maintain the health and cleanliness of our reefs. This proactive stance underscores our mission to protect these aquatic habitats and ensure they thrive for generations to come.

    a man wearing a hat

    By Matt Sterner

"it’s a night of laughter, good times, and making a difference.".

One of the best things about bar-hopping is having a designated driver to take you around. Plus, if you pull up in a huge bus, everyone in the area will know you mean business.

United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona’s Young Leaders United is hosting the ever-so-popular Dive Bar Bus Tour on Saturday, April 6. The tour takes you to five dive bar gems, which have yet to be announced.

“Every dollar raised supports United Way’s mission to empower youth in Tucson’s community. Let’s dive into fun with purpose!”

    maui underwater tour

    Here’s how it works:

Meet at the El Con Center, 3601 E. Broadway Blvd., at 5:45 p.m. in the northeast parking lot by The Home Depot. The bus leaves promptly at 6 p.m. so don’t be late! Also, please remember to bring a photo ID and a signed waiver form.

Early Bird Tickets (from now until Thursday, March 7) are $30 per person . Then, from Friday, March 8 – Thursday, April 4, the tickets will be $35 each . If you wait longer than that to purchase your seat on the bus, tickets will be $40 per person .

The moral of the story is “Don’t drag your feet because this bus is ready to rock and roll — taking you to classy dive bars around Tucson.”

Most of the bars on the route (they’ll be announced soon) provide a drink special for the Dive Bar Bus Tour group.

    Giving Back to United Way

Young Leaders United raises funds for local “opportunity youth” and the members aged 16-24 years old who are currently not engaged in school or work. The money raised supports access to resources like hygiene supplies, bus passes, and programs like workforce readiness training and GED support.

Therefore, the Dive Bar Bus Tour is a great opportunity to meet new people who are also passionate about supporting youth.
