USTA CEO Lew Sherr Details Blueprint for Tennis’s Premier Tour

  • Author: Jon Wertheim

Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz (20) may have beaten Italy’s Jannik Sinner (22), the latest iteration of a swelling and textured rivalry that now stands at 4–4. But the fiercest battle to play out last week in Indian Wells, Calif., did so in boardrooms and conference rooms.

Andrea Gaudenzi, chairman of the ATP, announced that he had officially secured a $1 billion commitment from Saudi Arabia to bankroll a streamlined tennis ecosystem. The hitch: a 1000-level event would be added to the calendar, to be staged in The Kingdom.

And on the other side of the net … a proposal for a Premier Tour—put forth by the four majors, presenting an uncharacteristically united front—outlining a new professional tennis model offering:

  • The four majors.
  • Ten other events: 96-player draws; men and women; equal prize money; all held outdoors.
  • A team event.
  • Year-end finals for both men and women held at the same site.
  • Guaranteed off weeks before and after majors and a minimum two-month offseason.
  • A PGA-style tour, open to the top 100 or so players; with a developmental tour open to players ranked roughly 101–300.

Carlos Alcaraz is congratulated by Jannik Sinner after winning their semi-final match in the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.

The BNP Paribas Open served as the backdrop for talks of a new tennis ecosystem.

For a sport that, historically, has done change the way the royal family does transparency, this was a jarring disruption in the truest sense. For starters, it would mean the end of the WTA and ATP tours as they have existed for decades; and the death or demotion of more than 100 tournaments that currently dot the calendar, from Dallas to Doha.

Credit/blame for the Premier Tour generally goes to Australian Open chieftain Craig Tiley, who was moved to act dramatically, threatened as he was by a Saudi event in January that would squelch Aussie Open run-up momentum. Likely because Tiley, a born deal-maker, can polarize within the sport, it is now Lew Sherr, the USTA’s chief executive officer and executive director, who has become the front-facing figure for the Premier Tour.

Sherr spoke with Sports Illustrated this week about the Premier Tour, what it is and isn’t and what problems it addresses.

The following has been lightly edited for brevity and clarity.

Jon Wertheim: Let’s start broad and then get to specific questions. What are you presenting?

Lew Sherr: So it all starts from a proposition that tennis is an attractive sport, but that it underperforms commercially, which is creating challenges to support athletes and for the sustainability of tournaments. I don't think that's news to anybody in the industry.

We'll go back to 2021. The [seven tennis stakeholders] commissioned Boston Consulting Group to understand what the issues were in the sport and what the opportunities might be. And all of that research—which included 5,000 tennis fans around the world surveyed—pointed to the fact that tennis, while broadly popular, had 70% of tennis fans only engaging with the sport through the four majors.

So you're the fourth most popular sport in the world, but 70% of those fans are only watching the four events during the year. And the feedback also indicated that events during the season lack consequence. Fans have a hard time following the narrative. We dilute our own product. We compete with our own product. You might have six events in a given week. Fans struggle to know where they should be watching. Why is Sinner playing in Rotterdam and Alcaraz is somewhere in South America? The solution that came back from all of that fan research? The best way to present the sport to fans was in a format where the best players are playing in a prescribed sort of elite season. At the same time, you're accounting for player health, rest, peaks in performance.

JW: That takes care of fans and players. What about tournaments?

LS: From a tournament perspective, there are just too many tournaments that are not viable. And because they're diluted, they're competing with one another. So we try to address the structural impediments in the system and bring forward a more expansive, a more holistic solution that would tackle all of that. … Ten tournaments [out of roughly 140] drive 80% of all of the economics. Four of them are the Grand Slams plus six others. So it's unbelievably concentrated. I don't think I'm telling you anything that you haven't reported, that you didn't know. So what we set out to do, the slams together, unified to say, if we can lean in and try to address the structural issues that the sport is facing, maybe there's a new opportunity.

JW: If tennis’s value today is X, what are you anticipating the valuation to be if all goes to plan?

LS: We estimate—and the consultants—that number is roughly a billion dollars in annual economic lift. Now that doesn't happen overnight. You've got to build to that and there are contracts and cycles. But it is substantial. We're talking about a successful sport that still has huge, huge economic potential.

JW: The biggest objections to me would seem to be, 1) the other guys have a bag with a billion dollars in it. You have consultants’ projections. 2) Everyone thinks the sport is under-monetized. Everyone thinks it’s confusing and the calendar is too crowded. But there are dozens and dozens of 500- and 250-level events that don’t seem to fit in.

LS: Our view is that billion is redistributed below to make sure players are earning sustainable for success. It’s a reimagination. We’ve gotta separate ourselves from what exists today. The analogy with what the ATP sort of developed with the Saudis, I guess is a bit of an apples and oranges. These are not, these are not mutually exclusive opportunities.

JW: What are you telling that guy that’s dumped a lot of money into his 500-level event?

LS: We are prioritizing creating sort of sustainability at the lower levels of our sport, we think there is an enormous amount of growth. Part of our proposition: there is revenue that has to be redistributed to other events. And we think there is an opportunity to create a much more viable proposition. There are 10 events that are driving 80% of the revenue in our sport. That’s not sustainable. We need to get to a sustainable model.

JW: I’m hearing four majors and 10 events that will be 96 draws; men and women; all outdoors; and the 10th is likely a grass event pre-Wimbledon. Accurate?

LS: Yeah, our vision for the calendar reflects four Grand Slams. We think 10 is the appropriate number of Premier Tour events. I can’t overstate the importance of all combined, all equal prize day one for the sport operating entity combined. And truly creating a gender-neutral sport is absolutely paramount for us and a critical sort of piece of this thing. We also think there is an opportunity for an international team event that would fit within this calendar; and then a year-end combined event.

JW: I’ve heard two weeks of protection pre and post the four majors.

LS: There’s absolutely one week. The other piece: we’re prescribing specific play-down weeks. So we know that competition matters. And if you’re a lower-ranked player, you may not be getting enough match play. If you lose early in a model like this, there may not be enough matches for you to be at your peak performance, so we’ve identified a series of weeks over the course of the year where you could drop down to get more match play, drop into what we think would be sort of the highest level of contender tour events.

JW: Your [model] is avoiding the sportswashing issue in a way that your competing offer is not. Would you take money from Saudi Arabia if they decided to reallocate with you?

LS:  What I will tell you is that we’ve not had one conversation with an external stakeholder about investment in this. We want to get this format right. We don’t doubt that there will be a number of people lining up to potentially want to invest in this. We’re not sure that we need external investment. We might be able to do this with some sanctioned sales. So it may not require equity. But what we also know is it’s an incredibly attractive sport. And you’re seeing increased investment in sport. And we’re good.

We want to focus on delivering the product in the right way to create something that's sustainable. That's right for fans, that’s consistent with what we set out to do at the outset. I won't exclude or include anything at this stage. But right now we, we've not been pursuing external investment.

JW: What do you see as the biggest challenge to this getting done?

LS: This is a massive reimagination of the way the sport is presented and change is hard. And we want to get it right and we’re taking our time and we’re working with stakeholders to make sure that we’re thinking through all of these questions that you’re asking and others are asking, because that stuff is important. Ultimately it’s going to require change from within and that’s really hard, right?

JW: The tours, as we know them, have outstanding media rights contracts. They have venue contracts. They have vendors. They have pension plans. They’ve got liability policies. What happens if there is no ATP and WTA as we know it? And can you do it all by Jan. 1, 2026?

LS: I think putting a date on this is really hard. If that needs to happen [Jan. 1, 2026] would be achievable. My guess is you will see a transition period, but we’re up to conversations we’ve had with, with players, the conversations we’ve had with tournament owners.

Look, everybody gets it, right? I think you probably would agree. This is a better presentation of the sport. However, the how you get there is where the complexity lies, right? And, and how long does that take? And what has to happen to get there and making sure that we don't compromise to the point that you lose the integrity of the vision in order to get there.

So it’s a process and, and we are committed. We’re working as quickly as we can work, but we’re not willing to sacrifice getting it right. We’re not trying to take some shortcuts or band-aids to get to something that ultimately is not going to serve us well in the long term.

Tennis’ Grand Slams plot deal for ‘premier tour’ that would revolutionize the sport

Tennis’ Grand Slams are attempting to partner with a collection of the sport’s other best-known tournaments in what could become the most revolutionary transformation of the game since the 1990s.

Their goal, according to five people who have been both involved with and briefed on those discussions, is to form a partnership with at least the 10 largest tournaments and their own events — Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, the French Open and the Australian Open — to create a premium tour that resembles a tennis version of Formula 1.

The move comes as the sport’s most powerful entities, executives and top players have come to accept that tennis in its current form does not work nearly as well as it should. Among their criticisms: it is confusing for fans to follow; hundreds of millions of dollars that could be earned are left on the table; its nearly endless schedule overtaxes top players, whose careers are cut short by injury and mental fatigue.

Those factors, officials worry, have left tennis prone to the kind of aggressive disruption that has plagued golf the past two seasons, as the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf venture cleaved top players from the established PGA Tour and led to an expensive legal battle that forced a merger whose details are still being worked on. Warding off a similar turn of events has become a top priority for the seven governing bodies that oversee tennis and b ringing together the most valuable and best-known properties in the sport to create an elite collection of events and a simplified season is widely seen as the best defense.

premier tour

“We all know that premium drives the business,” Steve Simon, the chief executive of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tour, said in an interview Tuesday.

For a week in Turin, Italy, earlier this month, top officials in tennis eagerly awaited the proposal from the biggest and most powerful entities in the sport following roughly six months of debate and discussion. The organizations that operate the four Grand Slam tournaments have come together with a rare unity.

Several of the officials interviewed for this story asked not to be identified to avoid jeopardizing their professional relationships.

Ultimately, officials with the other governing bodies who were in Turin, the site of the men’s ATP Tour (Association of Tennis Professionals) finals, left without getting the long-awaited proposal. Executives with the Grand Slams, who declined to comment publicly for this article or did not respond to messages seeking comment, have told officials with the men’s and women’s tours they needed more time to finalize their proposal. The goal is to have a plan ready to present when the sport gathers in Australia in January for the Australian Open.

In a sign of how serious the slams are about forcing change, they have yet to sign the next three-year agreement with the tours that codifies the system of awarding rankings points. That move signals their view that a significant transformation is in the offing, so signing a multi-year agreement based on the current schedule is pointless, even if that means beginning the 2024 season without an agreement.

Executives involved with the discussions have described them as fluid and largely positive. All said there was a significant possibility that they could fall apart, or the premium tour could be expanded to include more than just the Grand Slams, the top-level events, and a few others deemed worthy. In recent years, tennis executives have worked with top consulting and investment firms that came up with similar proposals to the one now under consideration, only to fail to move tennis beyond its status quo.

A more focused, premium tour that the Grand Slams had partial control over could also protect them against significant changes in the schedule leading up to their events. In recent months, this has become a top concern for Craig Tiley, the chief executive of Tennis Australia, as the men’s and women’s tours considered adding a top-level event in Saudi Arabia during the first week of the season, beginning in January 2025.

A top-level January event in Saudi Arabia would likely doom the series of tournaments across Australia and New Zealand that, along with the Australian Open, constitute the first swing of the year. It could also spell the end of the United Cup, a mixed-team event that Tennis Australia launched last year.

The plan for a premium tour that the slams are formulating aligns, at least theoretically, with one of the top goals of Andrea Gaudenzi, the chief executive of the ATP Tour.

Gaudenzi has long wanted to close the gaps in prestige, import and financial might between the Grand Slams and the biggest events on the men’s and women’s tours. These are often referred to by the men’s tour as the “Masters” events and women’s tour as “the 1,000s” — for the number of rankings points the women receive.

premier tour

Those tournaments include mixed events in Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Rome, Toronto/Montreal, and near Cincinnati. Already more than half of the top events have been extended to 12 days from one week, compared with two weeks for the Grand Slams.

“ We want to grow our premium product and that’s a fact that we’ve been very vocal about,” Gaudenzi said during a meeting with a small group of journalists in Turin two weeks ago. “For the sport, closing the gap between the Masters and the slams is good for everybody. Now, there is a very big gap.”

While Gaudenzi and the slams may share a vision of what is best for tennis, it’s not clear what role he, his WTA Tour counterpart Simon, or the tours themselves would have moving forward. They may be left to oversee a collection of the small and mid-sized tournaments, known as the 500s and 250s. Under one scenario, developing players could largely make up the fields of those events, while players ranked in the top 100, who could earn a “tour card” good for the season and a specified guaranteed salary, focus on the top-level tour but are still able to participate in smaller events if they choose to.

A major question, Simon said, is, “How do you create a calendar that is easier to follow?”

Players who have begun to learn details of the plan the slams are trying to formulate have so far generally been supportive of the concept, especially those involved with the Professional Tennis Players Association, the player organization Novak Djokovic helped launch three years ago.

Tennis players play the longest season in professional sports. Among their largest priorities are earning more money while having to compete less, so they can rest and maintain their health. A premium tour could accomplish both of those goals and produce a more simplified version of the sport than the sprawling one that now exists.

premier tour

If the top 100 players had to focus mainly on the slams and roughly a dozen top-level tournaments, that would account for about 32 weeks of competition and leave ample time for them to play a few smaller events, where they could receive lucrative appearance fees, while also maintaining enough time for rest and a proper off-season.

Sports executives say revenues would likely rise if the slams and the top tournaments could sell their television and sponsorship rights more collectively, rather than driving down the market by competing against one another, though the structure of the partnership has not been finalized. It may not include all of the commercial rights for all the tournaments, the officials said.

The changes would likely take at least a year or two to begin and longer than that to go into full effect as executives work to unwind or renegotiate long-term media and sponsorship deals and to figure out how to divide revenues between the top-level tours and the other tournaments.

The Premier League has announced a major summer tour involving six clubs across five cities. In total, there will be nine matches between Premier League teams in the United States in 2023 as part of this summer tour. Note that this does not include Arsenal or Manchester United , who both have individual summer friendlies planned in the United States this year.

The six clubs making the collective trip across the pond are Aston Villa, Brentford, Brighton, Chelsea, Fulham and Newcastle. Each team is playing three games in the United States as part of this summer series across five venues. Games are in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Orlando, Harrison and Landover. The latter two are just outside of New York and Washington, DC, respectively.

This is the first time the Premier League is making a collective league effort to play a preseason tournament in the United States. In the past, teams traveled individually, but still played Premier League teams often. For example, the Florida Cup last year pit Arsenal against Chelsea .

Premier League US tour schedule

These games take place over a nine-day span from Saturday, July 22 to Sunday, July 30. The action starts in Philadelphia at Lincoln Financial Field, with a total of three games over that weekend. Chelsea plays against Brighton on Saturday before Fulham plays Brentford and Newcastle takes on Aston Villa.

Then, on Wednesday July 26, there are three games. Two are in Atlanta, which are Brentford-Brighton and Chelsea vs Newcastle. The third game is in Orlando as Fulham faces Aston Villa.

The last set of games start Friday, July 28 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ. Brighton and Newcastle conclude their USA ventures at the home of the New York Red Bulls. Then, on Sunday, July 30, there are two games at FedEx field in Landover, MD. Aston Villa battles Brentford before London clubs Chelsea and Fulham play.

How to watch

In addition to announcing the schedule, the Premier League also clarified that NBC is in charge of broadcasting the games. NBCUniversal’s family of channels, including USA Network as well as Peacock , have coverage of games throughout the preseason tournament.

You can also start to think about tickets to watch these games in the United States. Pre-sale tickets open on Tuesday, April 25. One day later, general sale tickets go on sale.

Liverpool XI vs Sheffield United: Starting lineup, confirmed team news and injury latest for Premier League

Liverpool bring Ibrahima Konate back into their starting lineup for today’s Premier League clash with Sheffield United .

Curtis Jones also features on the bench.

The midfielder has not featured for the Reds since suffering an ankle injury in the 4-1 win over Brentford back in February, but is now pushing for selection once again after returning to training at Kirkby this week.

Liverpool are unbeaten in the league for two months as Jurgen Klopp continues his farewell tour.

They displaced Arsenal at the top of the table on Sunday after beating Brighton 2-1 before the Gunners held Manchester City to a goalless draw at the Etihad Stadium.

Arsenal went back to the summit by beating Luton on Wednesday as City also brushed aside Aston Villa. Liverpool are now back down in second spot, but another win against Sheffield United would take them back to first place.

A draw would not be enough though due to Arsenal’s superior goal difference.

Klopp will hope his side can continue their impressive league form despite their continuing injury woes.

“Curtis is in full training and in contention, that’s it pretty much,” Klopp said on Wednesday, later adding: “That doesn’t mean he can play 90 minutes, maybe just a few.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota are still out for Liverpool. Andy Robertson is fit after an ankle issue but Wataru Endo is being monitored following a knock.

Stefan Bajcetic will be back in full Liverpool training next week, while Thiago Alcantara, Ben Doak and Joel Matip are still out.

Starting Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Kelleher; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Gomez; Mac Allister, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai; Salah, Nunez, Diaz

Sky Sports Golf podcast: Could Rory McIlroy's PGA Tour form reduce Grand Slam pressure at The Masters?

Rory McIlroy needs to win The Masters to complete the career Grand Slam; McIlroy last won a major in 2014 and is without a top-15 finish on the PGA Tour this season; Watch The Masters live from April 11-14 on Sky Sports Golf

Rory McIlroy has made a slow start to the season on the PGA Tour, although could his disappointing streak of results put less pressure on his latest bid to complete golf’s career Grand Slam?

McIlroy made a fast start to 2024 on the DP World Tour, finishing runner-up at the Dubai Invitational before successfully defending his title at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, but has failed to replicate those results since switching focus to the PGA Tour.

The world No 2 struggled to a tied-66th finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and has been unable to register a top-20 in his next four PGA Tour starts, allowing Scottie Scheffler to pull further clear at the top of the world rankings after big wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players.

McIlroy has had a busier early-season schedule than previous years as he looks to end his major drought, with the Northern Irishman electing to tee it up at the Valero Texas Open this week ahead of aiming to complete the career Grand Slam at The Masters.

The 34-year-old is among the pre-tournament favourites to claim a long-awaited fifth major title next week, despite missing two of his last three cuts at Augusta National, with the Sky Sports Golf podcast panel debating on how much his poor form could impact him.

"His form has been very poor by his standards, having started off the year very well," former DP World Tour player Gary Murphy told the Sky Sports Golf podcast. "Then he hasn't been inside the top-15 in his last five starts, so he has little to show.

"I actually don't mind that and I would hate if McIlroy was doing a Scottie Scheffler at the moment, as I think the expectations would be absolutely ferocious. I think playing in the Valero Texas Open this week is good and I would like to see him get to Augusta National as late as possible.

"I'm hoping he'll find that this week and have a decent week. If he wins it's a good thing, as he's won the week before winning a major, so that's not going to get him out of his element.

"He is looking for something, but we've all gone into tournaments trying to find something. The fact that he's out of form doesn't matter massively, as he's a very light switch kind of player and he could find something in his swing this week, go with it, and hang onto that for a month or six weeks."

Should mcilroy make a late arrival.

McIlroy has had 20 top-tens in majors since his 2014 PGA Championship victory - including seven in his last eight major starts, more than any other player during the same period, with the former world No 1's best finish at The Masters coming via a runner-up finish in 2022.

The four-time major champion will be one of the main talking points in the press at the opening major of the year, with former DP World Tour player Richard McEvoy backing him to stay away from the media to enhance his chances of an elusive Masters victory.

Rory McIlroy, of Northern Ireland, reacts after his shot went into the water on the 18th hole during the first round of The Players Championship golf tournament Thursday, March 14, 2024, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky)

"I think it's quite a good thing that there could be lower expectations on him," McEvoy added. "I think that's where Scheffler's so good, as he's a very quiet unassuming guy and doesn't necessarily get all the plaudits and expectations from the press.

"The press will still be on Rory for sure because he's trying to win that career Grand Slam. He should turn up Tuesday afternoon, play a few holes on Wednesday, do his own thing and try and stay away from the press as much as possible.

"It would help him, no doubt, if he turned up late and tried not to speak to the press too much. They're just going to ask question after question about him winning there, which is just going to add in more pressure. Hopefully he can be a little more selfish and just turn up and do his own thing."

What else is on the podcast?

Sarah Stirk steps in for regular podcast host Josh Antmann to talk through another eventful week in golf, where Nelly Korda continued her dominance on the LPGA Tour and Keita Nakajima enjoyed an impressive victory at the Hero Indian Open.

Highlights from the final round of the Ford Championship at the at Seville Golf and Country Club in Arizona.

The panel look at how many golfers see the DP World Tour as a stepping stone to the PGA Tour and reflect on the legacy of chief executive Keith Pelley, who leaves his role this week and will be replaced by Guy Kinnings. There's also an early look at predictions for The Masters and a preview to the Augusta National Women's Amateur.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
