Tips & tricks, bait and more.

With clear tropical waters and beautiful beaches comes an array of reef fish and small marine wildlife, making Zanzibar a fisher’s paradise and perfect for those who enjoy scuba diving or snorkelling.

If you’re looking for something different, the ocean isn’t the only place to drop your line. They also have an array of freshwater lakes like Lake Victoria. Trips to deep freshwater fish in Lake Victoria can be organized through the local villages, Musoma and Mwanza.

Big Eye Trevally

Native to the warm, tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, these fish are nocturnal feeders. The best way to catch them is by illuminating the water after dusk. Bait can be dead or alive and can include squid, different species of fish and crustaceans, or lures.

They are delicious to eat and can grow rather large, so making sure you have the proper equipment is essential.

Bull Dorado

Also known as mahi-mahi, this gamefish is a real beauty. They’re a regular catch off the west, north, and east coast of Zanzibar. The bull dorado can most commonly be found near floating objects such as driftwood or buoys. Their large size and delicious taste make them a popular catch. They can be found close to shore and in open waters.

These aggressive fish are usually found near the surface and close to coral reefs. They have a snake-like look with extremely sharp teeth. They’re scavengers and could pose a threat to people who are snorkelling or scuba diving nearby.

Silverfish such as the mackerel make good bait, and they tend to go after the tail first then come back for the rest, so don’t reel in if they don’t get hooked the first time.

Broadbill Swordfish

These fish can be caught by deep-sea fishing, as they spend much the daylight deep below the surface. Bait can include anything from squid to mackerel to specialized lures, and using weights can help you get your bait deep enough. You can expect them to put up a big fight, and you’ll need a hefty rod and reel to bring one in.

Top sport fishing species in Zanzibar

zanzibar fishing trip

Mahi Mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) are also commonly referred to as dorado, dolphin or dolphinfish. They are recognizable by their bluntly shaped heads, long dorsal fin and their bright colouring, dark blue and green on their dorsal side and yellow on their sides and underside.

zanzibar fishing trip

Sailfish  (Istiophorus)  are one the most wanted fish in the sport fishing world. Often described as the fastest fish in the sea, sailfish can weigh up to 90 kg (200 pounds) and grow up to 3 m (9.7 ft) in length.

zanzibar fishing trip

Wahoo ( Acanthocybium solandri ), also known as Ono (meaning “delicious” in Hawaiian), are found in many subtropical and tropical waters. They’re identifiable by their blue-green upper body which shifts into silver towards their belly. They also have blue vertical striping along their sides. These predators are torpedo-shaped and have long and largemouths with teeth.

zanzibar fishing trip

Yellowfin tuna grow fast, up to 400 pounds (180kg)  in about a 7-year lifespan, and they range in length from 59 inches to 88 inches long. They’re known for their torpedo shape, with a pointed nose and a sickle-shaped tail, and have dark blue backs with yellow sides (thus their name) with a silver underside.

Distributed throughout the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, the Giant Trevally - also known as GT - ( Caranx ignobilis ) is the most wanted species for popping lovers. They can be 1,70 cm long and reach up to 80 kg (175 lb)!

Fishing season in zanzibar.

You can expect to find billfish from November until March, though it isn’t uncommon for them to be caught year-round. The broadbill swordfish is also popular during these months as well as in November.

March until June is monsoon season, and it often rains for days with the sun only peeking out for a little bit at a time. It’s best to avoid planning your fishing trip around these months. The best times to visit Zanzibar are between August and March, avoiding the monsoon season.

Between August and October is ta great time to fish in Zanzibar. There are lots of different types of marlin during the fall months. You can find blue as well as black marlin between August and October, and the striped marlin is prominent during November all the way until March.  The shortbill spearfish can also be caught between August and October in the Pemba Channel but is a rare find.

The sailfish is a popular catch during January and December but can be caught year-round. Rough seas and strong winds can be expected in January, but usually, calm down in February.

TOP FISHING TECHNIQUES IN Zanzibar

Bottom fishing is probably one of the easiest methods of fishing, the technique is really simple, consisting in a rig for fishing on the bottom with a weight attached to the line, and a hook at the end of the line.

Tuna fishing is a fishing technique that brings together all the ways to fish this incredible predator. You can fish via trolling, spinning or jigging among others. Tuna is a fierce fighter, so adequate material is required to face this magnificent fighter.

Trolling is a fishing technique where one or more fishing lines, baited with lures or natural bait, are drawn behind a moving boat. Trolling can be done both in-shore and off-shore.

The trolling speed depends on the type of bait and the fish species. Where tuna and marlin like a speed of 6 to 10 knots, other species such as dentex or seabass should be targeted with a trolling speed of 3-4 knots maximum.

When trolling, the angler tries to raise a fish behind the boat using hookless teasers. Once the fish is there, the angler drops back a dead bait to a fish raised on a hookless teaser. Bait & Switch is probably the most exciting way of marlin fishing.

Pelagic Sharpshooting

Marlin fishing brings together all the ways to target this amazing predator. Marlin are mostly caught trolling artificials or dead bait behind the boat at a speed ranging from 6 tot 10 knots. This fish is a fighting machine so make sure you have adequate fishing tackle on board.

Fly fishing is a unique style of fishing compared to most other forms available. In the past, it was a technique that was used solely for freshwater fishing but that has changed and it is now possible it saltwater as well.

The casting style used to present a fly is much different from any other form of fishing.

Spin Fishing is a technique of fishing that is used to target fish that are usually close to the top of the water. Throwing a lure of any description and retrieving it in a variety of different speeds and rhythms to produce a bite from a nearby fish.

Pop fishing or "popping" is one of the most exciting ways to fish as you can witness all the action close to the surface of the water.

This style of fishing involves dragging a lure known as a popper across the surface of the water with a short sharp retrieving action. The lure slaps against the water creating a popping sound and fires up nearby fish.

This type of fishing generally requires a decent amount of travelling away from land. You will be fishing in potentially large depths of water but generally chasing tuna or marlin type species that live closer to the surface. Famous pioneers like Ernest Hemingway made deep sea fishing and big game fishing very popular. For deep sea fishing large, expensive boats and strong fishing tackle are required.

History of Deep Sea Fishing

Deep sea fishing has a rich history, tracing back to ancient times when it was a means of survival. Over centuries, it evolved into a sport of skill and patience, attracting adventurers and nature lovers alike. From rudimentary tools to sophisticated equipment, the transformation of deep sea fishing is a testament to human ingenuity and passion for the sea.

Technology and Apparel

Modern deep sea fishing benefits greatly from advanced technology. GPS systems, sonar for locating fish, and state-of-the-art communication devices have transformed the experience. Equally important is the appropriate apparel – waterproof clothing, sun protection, and safety vests are essential for your comfort and safety on the high seas.

Live bait fishing is a style that is used to target large fish species by using smaller "live" fish species as natural bait. You will let the bait swim naturally to attract predator fish that might be in the area you are fishing.

Jigging is the fishing technique where an angler fishes a metal lure, called a jig, vertically. This is opposed to spinnerbaits which move through the water horizontally. Basically, a metal lure is dropped to a certain depth (normally the bottom) and then reeled in with rhythmic, jerky moves to attract the predator.

TOURISM & OTHER ACTIVITIES

Zanzibar is a safe and beautiful tourist destination. It’s perfect for couples, honeymooners, and families. There’s no shortage of exciting water-sports, charter boat tours, and snorkelling. They have some incredible local cuisine, including coconut bean soup and ndizi Kaanga, or fried plantains.

LEGISLATION / REGULATIONS

The waters between Zanzibar and Pemba are home to excellent big game fishing and are famous world wide for the exciting opportunities they provide. Further South at Mafia Island and Latham Island there are fishing grounds which are almost untouched with only a few local fishermen there taking the fish. With large schools of barracuda, wahoo, king fish and giant travelli in the area all year, and seasonal visits from many other species, the fishing off Zanzibar is an experience you will never forget.

014

Three professional deep sea fishing boats are on offer – Baloo , Timimi and Suli Suli. These are all equipped to the highest international safety standards. They also have the latest fishing technology with GPS navigational aids, echo sounders and fish finders. Half and full day charters are available on all the boats and if you would like to do a longer trip then three or five day charters to Pemba, Mafia Island and Latham Island can also be arranged.

A full set of tackle is provided with Shimano, Fenwick, Harnell or KC rods and Shimano or Penn International reels, spooled with 80lb, 50lb, 30lb or 20lb mono lines. Clients who wish to use their own lighter tackle are welcome. Our experienced skippers and crew can instruct novices and talk fishermen through any procedure in the course of reeling in their catch and give hints and tips to improve your technique.

Suli Suli is an 8.5m open deck boat, professionally converted for the job of fishing. She has had a fighting chair added, along with fish finder, GPS, downriggers and six rod holders. As with all our boats she holds a current certificate of sea-worthiness and is equipped with lifejackets, VHF radio and all other safety gear. Her two 115HP Yamaha outboard motors allow her to cover a lot of ground in comfort and make sure you can get to where the fish are.

When you find the fish you have six Shimano rods and reels with 20lb lines to choose from. If you wish to bring your own tackle or would like to use something a bit heavier then let us know and we’ll accommodate you.

This vessel’s open deck design is perfect for the sun lovers amongst you, allowing you to top up your tans on the way out but with enough shade that you can shelter if it gets a bit too hot. Many of our guests and several experienced fishermen have said Suli Suli was their favourite boat. She is simple, unpretentious and perfectly suited to a great day out in the sun, bobbing around on the sea and the experienced captain and crew always seem to find fish!

The Norwegians have a prestigious boat building history. From the long boats that crossed the Atlantic hundreds of years before Columbus to their latest modern fishing vessels they have never failed to build quality boats. Timimi is a 7.5m Windy from Norway and lives up to the history in every way. This custom built fishing boat is powered by twin 85HP outboard motors this vessel has enough power to reach some excellent fishing grounds including Leven Bank and Pemba Island in comfort and style. The crew of professional crew can guide beginners through their first trip but have enough experience to help seasoned fishermen.

Timimi carries a wide range of fishing equipment. She has downriggers so your lines won’t get tangled and you can choose from thirty and fifty pound lines. The rods are a combination of Penn International and Shimano and are all in excellent condition. All that good equipment would be useless if there were no fish so the boat is equipped with a fish finder and GPS and the usual safety equipment. There is space for four people to share the boat without a squeeze and inside the you’ll find sofas, cushions and a marine head for added comfort.  There is a toilet on board

Pride of the fleet is Baloo. Walking down from the helm station into the luxuriously furnished galley, convertible into a bedroom, you will find a comfortable bathroom and guest bedroom easily providing total over night capability for four people. Catching, cleaning and barbequing can all be done on the same huge cockpit deck. With so many fish in the sea, it may be hard to come up with a valid reason to return back to shore.

Baloo is fully equipped for all your needs. Seven Penn International rods and reels can be used simultaneously to increase your chances of a catch. Down riggers spread the lines and are easily accessible. The tuna tower provides the captain with a much higher view of the sea which allows him to spot the fish from further away. For long days out at sea the vessel has a head and comfortable seating down below in the spacious cabin if you want to get out of the sun for a while. All modern fishing and safety equipment is included, from GPS and fish finder to a full compliment of lifejackets and VHF radio.

With a length of over 38’ and a beam of 11’ Baloo has plenty of space on board. The facilities on board allow for longer trips than Timimi or Suli Suli. We regularly run three or five day charters to Pemba, Mafia Island and the famous Latham Island where in the past fishermen have taken time out from catching fish to snorkel amongst huge schools of tuna and alongside manta rays. On these trips we enjoy fantastic fishing and then can relax in the evening with a cold beer and barbeque the fish we have caught that day. You’ll never eat fresher seafood than that!

Fly Fishing Zanzibar: Explore the Thrills of Angling in a Tropical Paradise

Introduction

Zanzibar, an exotic island paradise in East Africa, is known for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life. While the destination has gained popularity among beach enthusiasts and scuba divers, it’s also becoming an increasingly attractive spot for fly fishing enthusiasts. In this article, we will delve into the world of fly fishing in Zanzibar, exploring its unique offerings, best spots, techniques, and more.

1. What is Fly Fishing?

Before we dive into the specifics of fly fishing in Zanzibar, let’s briefly understand what fly fishing is. Fly fishing is a specialized angling method that utilizes lightweight artificial flies to entice fish. Unlike traditional fishing methods, where the weight of the bait is used to cast the line, fly fishing relies on the weight of the fly line to carry the nearly weightless fly to the target.

2. Exploring Zanzibar as a Fly Fishing Destination

Zanzibar offers a remarkable fly fishing experience, combining the thrill of the sport with the beauty of its surroundings. The rich marine life and diverse ecosystem make it an ideal destination for anglers seeking a unique adventure.

2.1 The Rich Marine Life

Zanzibar’s waters teem with a wide variety of fish species, including bonefish, permit, trevally, barracuda, and sailfish, among others. These warm tropical waters create the perfect habitat for fly fishing, presenting anglers with exciting opportunities to catch prized game fish.

2.2 Fly Fishing Techniques in Zanzibar

Fly fishing techniques can vary depending on the target species and the location within Zanzibar. Some popular techniques include saltwater flats fishing, sight fishing, and offshore fly fishing. Local guides and experienced anglers can provide valuable insights into the best techniques to employ for a successful fly fishing excursion.

3. Best Fly Fishing Spots in Zanzibar

Zanzibar boasts several exceptional fly fishing spots that cater to anglers of all skill levels. Here are three notable spots to explore:

3.1 Spot 1: Pemba Island

Pemba Island, located just off the coast of Zanzibar, offers pristine waters and abundant marine life. Its secluded nature and untouched beauty make it a favorite among fly fishing enthusiasts. Here, anglers can target bonefish, permit, and trevally while enjoying the serenity of this secluded paradise.

3.2 Spot 2: Mnemba Atoll

Mnemba Atoll, a protected marine conservation area, is renowned for its exceptional fly fishing opportunities. This picturesque location provides anglers with the chance to catch a variety of species, including bonefish, permit, and barracuda.
