It was a whirlwind across a number of cities, but a very comprehensive experience across the many sides and cultures of China. Most days had sufficient activities, but weren’t overwhelming, which was great.Across cities, we had excellent tour guides, like Kitty (Beijing), Jenny (Xian), William (Guilin/Yangshuo), Kris (Shanghai), and Tony (Yellow Mountains.)

singapore travel expert

From the time we landed in Beijing until we left, we were well taken care of. My wife and I had Lily Liu as our guide and she was amazing. From arranging visits to all the different sights, to teaching us the history, it was fantastic.

The tour was excellent. Selinda was very knowledgeable about all the aspects of our tour. Selinda was very interesting and knew so much Chinese history

We made a private tour through South China in January 2024. Altogether Chengdu was the highlight. We had an incredible day at Emeishan. In Chengdu our guidewas Helen. She was the diamond of all. Speaking fluently English, full of interesting stories, laughing and talking all the time. We missed her the rest of our tour. We highly recommend to go to Chengdu for 3 days when visiting China, especially with Helen.

Other highlights are too many to mention but here are a few Ken taking us to the Terracotta Warriors and our food tour in Xian was amazing,

Our day volunteering at the Panda Base was truly unforgettable. Helen, our guide, provided us with invaluable insights about Chengdu and the pandas, enriching our tour with her knowledge and expertise. We're grateful to Helen for accompanying us throughout the day and showcasing the highlights of China.

We had a booking with China Highlights through Silvia Ye who guarenteed a perfect organisation. In Chengdu our guide was Helen. She was the diamond of all. Speaking fluently English, full of interesting stories, laughing and talking all the time. We missed her the rest of our tour. We highly recommend to go to Chengdu for 3 days when visiting China, especially with Helen.

We traveled to China during the Chinese new year and we had Kris as our guide and he is simply knowledgeable, helpful and great.

We visited Guilin for 2 days and stayed in the Guilin Waterfall hotel. Guilin was absolutely beautiful! Our guide, William, was very knowledgeable and kind! He taught us so much about Guilin and the surrounding area! We really enjoyed trying the specialty rice noodles of Guilin. Our highlight was the Li river cruise.

Amazing tour and the guide Mr. 贺霄 was very accommodating with our needs and request as we have bought our 2 years old with us. Well explained for all the place we visited. Any additional cost were informed well ahead and didn't felt any pressure if we opt not to go for additional detour. The trip was relaxing/ laid back/no rushing with zero shopping!

Singapore Luxury Vacations

It’s a city, island, state, and country all in one breath. Singapore is an extremely unique Southeast Asian enclave, its history as a trading settlement influencing all aspects of modern life in profoundly original ways. With a Peranakan population that comprises Chinese, Indian, and Malay descendants, its multicultural roots are obvious from the minute you step off the plane – in the architecture, in the food, on the street, and in the temples.

A profusion of colorful Peranakan “shophouses,” extraordinary Buddhist and Hindu temples, edgy skyscrapers, and colonial-era buildings infused with modern glamour.

Singapore is an excellent entry point for first-time visitors to Asia. This is due in part to an icing of English character, leftover from almost 150 years of British rule. Wandering the different neighborhoods is time well spent. The whole city is an architect’s paradise, a profusion of colorful Peranakan “shophouses,” extraordinary Buddhist and Hindu temples, edgy skyscrapers, and colonial-era buildings infused with modern glamour. Along with Chinatown and Little India, jaunts through the design-forward concept stores and chic cafés of Tiong Bahru, and the eclectic boutiques and day spas of the Katong district should be high on your list. The same goes for Kampong Glam, the Muslim quarter. Singapore has a number of green spaces to retreat to, too, including the Botanic Gardens, with its collection of orchids, and Gardens by the Bay, with its two biodomes and giant, tree-shaped towers. Understandably, the cuisine here is an amalgamation of the cultures overlapping in inviting and delicious ways. Mod-Sin cuisine (short for Modern Singaporean) is a contemporary spin on traditional cooking. Do indulge at the “hawker stalls” lining the food courts, which serve comfort food such as chili crab and chicken rice. Each stall has a particular specialty – and two even have Michelin stars. This is just the kind of surprise you will find in Singapore at every turn.

23 Best Things to Do in Singapore

By Ashlea Halpern

Singapore Pulau Ubin

It may be the one of the most expensive cities in the world , but Singapore has racked up plenty of other superlatives: cleanest, best planned, and, quite possibly, most entertaining. The Lion City is home to the largest rooftop infinity pool, the world's first safari park for nocturnal animals, centuries-old temples and, of course, some of the best food on the planet. You'll also find extraordinary gardens, impressive architecture, world-class performance venues, and shopping streets. The city-state offers a fascinating melding of the old and new, the historic and the modern. Since the pandemic, most of the attractions have reopened safely, adhering to Singapore’s safe management measures and SG Clean certification guidelines . Read on for our picks of the best things to do in Singapore.

Click the link to read our complete Singapore guide .

Gardens by the Bay Singapore

Gardens By the Bay Arrow

This is a hugely popular tourist attraction in Singapore, and rightly so. The breadth of plants and the creative ways in which they're displayed is awe-inspiring. In one part of the conservatory, the Cloud Forest mimics the cool-moist ecology of the tropical highlands. It has a treetop walk and an oft-photographed indoor 114-foot waterfall.

This image may contain Building Architecture Window Skylight Banister and Handrail

National Gallery Singapore Arrow

With more than 9,000 works, National Gallery Singapore owns the largest public collection of modern art in Southeast Asia. It's spread across two beautiful national monuments: City Hall and the country’s former Supreme Court. Some visitors spend half a day (or more) wandering the museum’s many galleries. If you're looking to avoid lines, consider going on a weekday and buying your tickets in advance online.

Singapore Kampong Glam Expansion of Haji Lane

Kampong Glam Arrow

Are you a hipster? Or a devout Muslim? Do you like unconventional modern art or traditional Arab crafts? Do you just want that Instagram snap or are you interested in learning more about this historic district, from its red-light leanings to its religious importance? Or maybe you just want a slice of the delicious kaya swiss roll from the famous Rich & Good Cake Shop? If you answered yes to any of these things, this delightfully eclectic enclave is for you. Singapore's Muslim quarter dates back to the 1800s, but the area has grown and changed, blending the religious and historical with a modern take on the city-state.

Jewel at Changi Airport in Singapore

Jewel Changi Airport Arrow

It might seem odd to tell travelers to hang out in an airport, but Jewel Changi is no ordinary airport (it's a fixture at the top of our Readers' Choice Awards best airport list ). The transportation hub is also a nature-themed shopping, dining, and entertainment extravaganza designed by architect Moshe Safdie. The project's highlights include the Rain Vortex, a seven-story-tall indoor waterfall; an indoor forest with suspended walkways; and nearly 300 stores. This is a game-changer for travelers on layovers. It's so popular (and so worth it) that 20 airlines will let you check in a full 24 hours in advance just to maximize your time inside.

The Intan Singapore Interior

The Intan Arrow

The Intan is a private home that houses one of Singapore’s most impressive collections of Peranakan artifacts. Owner Alvin Yapp has spent 30-plus years collecting 1,500 objects from Peranakan culture, most notably kasut manek (ornate beaded slippers worn by Straits Chinese women) and enamel tiffin carriers hand-painted in delicate floral patterns. Yapp's post-war home is a labor of love, and it shows in the meticulous way that he has arranged every square inch of it. Visits are strictly by appointment only.

Singapore Pulau Ubin

Pulau Ubin Arrow

This island was once known for its granite quarries. But when they closed down in the 1970s and jobs dwindled, residents began leaving. Today, the island is home to fewer than 50 people, who have chosen to stay for the old way of life. Which is exactly what people like visiting it for, too. Stepping onto Pulau Ubin is like time-traveling to the way Singapore was decades ago. Even getting to it is old-fashioned: You take a 10-minute ride on a chugging bumboat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal. This is a rich experience even for those who are cash-poor, and the perfect day trip for those looking to see a different time in Singapore's history or experience its wild side.

Merlion at Marina Bay Sands Singapore

Merlion Park Arrow

This promenade overlooking Marina Bay is home to Singapore's iconic 28-foot Merlion statue, a half-fish, half-lion stone carving that shoots water into the bay. The fish symbolizes Singapore's beginnings as a fishing village while the lion head is a nod to Singapura, which means "Lion City" in Malay. Erected in 1972, it remains one of the nation's most popular tourist attractions, so plan accordingly.

Marina Bay Sands

This one's for ballers: If you have cash to splash, you can do everything from have a meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant to check out the view from the SkyPark. The massive Moshe Safdie-designed mall, casino, convention center, and hotel is perhaps Singapore's most iconic building. A must-visit is the ArtScience Museum, Singapore's most future-forward, and the 57-story-high SkyPark, Singapore's best.

Singapore Haw Par Villa

Haw Par Villa Arrow

Forget manicured or wild, this eight-acre outdoor art park is bizarre but a feast for the eyes. It was set up in the 1930s—before the advent of TV and the Internet—by Tiger Balm founder and philanthropist Aw Boon Haw, who commissioned more than 1,000 detailed sculptures and dioramas that would teach traditional Chinese values. Back then, it was popular and crowded, but has become less so over the years. And though it's lost a bit of its luster, that only lends to its charm and 'raw' feel—what you get here is an unfiltered, in-your-face lesson on Chinese morals and culture that doesn't sit behind velvet ropes or glass panels, and isn't crawling with tourists. Also of note: This "Asian cultural park" claims to be the last of its kind in the world, though it's hard to imagine there were many like this to begin with.

Singapore St Andrews Cathedral

St. Andrew's Cathedral Arrow

You can't miss this giant, wedding-cake-like monument in the middle of Singapore's Civic District—it's one of the oldest buildings in the area and perhaps the most imposing, with its Neo Gothic design topped with a minimalist spire. Park grounds surround the structure so it stands out as a sanctuary in the midst of a busy urban area. This is Singapore's largest cathedral and also its oldest Anglican house of worship. It's a gem for history, culture, and architecture buffs.

Thian Hock Keng Temple Singapore

Thian Hock Keng Arrow

Thian Hock Keng Temple, a.k.a. Tianfu Temple, is Singapore’s oldest Buddhist temple. The elaborate architecture, done up in the traditional southern Chinese style, was built without using a single nail. Now fully restored, it's a feast for the eyes with its dragon and phoenix sculptures and Fujian-style broken porcelain roof ridges. Photos aren't allowed in most parts of the temple, and you'll likely get caught if you try to snap one. So you'll have to just keep those memories with you. If you can't keep your camera in your purse, don't go. This is not a selfie op. Admission is free, but it still never gets too crowded.

Sentosa Tanjong Beach Singapore

Sentosa Arrow

Sentosa is a 1,236-acre island resort off the southern coast of Singapore that's home to major tourist attractions like Universal Studios Singapore and the S.E.A. Aquarium. Singaporeans and international travelers also flock here to hang out on the beaches, zip line at Mega Adventure Park, shop at the massive Luxury Fashion Galleria, and more. Golf is a big deal here, too—the Sentosa Golf Club has two award-winning courses. In short, the island is a tourism machine, fine-tuned to appeal to a broad range of people—except those seeking an off-the-beaten-path vacation.

National Parks Board Southern Ridges Singapore

The Southern Ridges Arrow

The Southern Ridges is a 6.2-mile recreational trail that connects five parks along the southern ridge of Singapore—Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill, HortPark, Kent Ridge Park, and Labrador Nature Reserve. Like everything in Singapore, it's well-constructed and manicured. The landscape varies between jungle-like canopies of trees, unusual flora and fauna, and architecturally magnificent walkways. If you aren't up for the full five plus miles make sure you get to Henderson Waves, a timber deck lofted 256 feet in the air. It's the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore and beloved by photographers for its undulating curves.

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve Arrow

This sanctuary for flora and fauna—an ASEAN Heritage Park—is as wild as it gets in manicured Singapore. The 500 acres of land is made up of mangroves, mudflats, ponds, and forests that are home to a biodiverse ecosystem of mudskippers, crabs, water snakes, monitor lizards, otters, and the odd crocodile. It's also a spot for birders —an internationally recognized site of importance for migratory birds and is part of the East Asian Australasian Shorebird Site Network. But despite how untouched it is, the trails are quite flat and the whole place is fairly easy to navigate.

Singapore East Coast Road

East Coast Road Arrow

There's perhaps no better place to get a taste of Singapore—literally and figuratively—than by strolling through the East Coast Road enclave. Along this lively two mile stretch (one of Singapore's earliest delineated roads), colorful heritage shophouses sit shoulder to shoulder, forming a personality-packed backdrop for photos. Even better: They house some of the island's best eateries , including 328 Katong Laksa for its namesake dish, plus a handful of museums and stores showcasing the Peranakan—or Straits Chinese—culture that forms a large part of the local identity. The area is also a stone's throw from East Coast Park, where you can have a seaside stroll to counter the calories you'll inevitably consume along the way.

Singapore Botanic Gardens including the National Orchid Garden

Singapore Botanic Gardens Arrow

This UNESCO World Heritage site is carved into three main areas, or "cores." The Tanglin core is the oldest and the one visitors see first as they pass through the historic Tanglin Gate. The Tyersall-Gallop core is integrated into the park’s existing rainforest and the Bukit Timah core is home to a children's garden complete with treehouses, a suspension bridge, and farm. Visit the National Orchid Garden to see more than 1,000 species of orchids and 2,000 hybrids on display.

Singapore Night Safari

Night Safari Arrow

This is the world's first safari park for nocturnal animals and a wildly popular one at that. It's operated by the same group that runs the equally popular Singapore Zoo. The 86-acre reserve houses some 2,500 animals from 130 species, more than a third of which are endangered. Guests ride around the park on complimentary guided trams. The tour itself takes about 40 minutes and covers seven themed geographic areas, but specific animal sightings are never guaranteed. On the weekend and with advance booking, you can observe live tiger feedings. If you have the ability to walk some of the trails, do it. It'll get you away from the tourist scrum and you're more likely to encounter reserved animals.

Singapore Clarke Quay

Clarke Quay Arrow

In the 1800s, this quay, or wharf, near modern-day Fort Canning Park , was one of the centers of trade, when barges would transport goods upstream for storage in the warehouses. Today, the warehouses have been restored and painted in rainbow hues, making this a great photo spot. Instagram-worthiness aside, Clarke Quay has also become one of Singapore's food, drink, and entertainment hubs. The whole area has been converted into an open-air pedestrian precinct filled with restaurants, bars, and clubs.

Esplanade Theaters on the Bay Singapore

Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay Arrow

The premier art venue in Singapore, the Esplanade is home to multiple performance spaces, including a stunning state-of-the-art concert hall, a horseshoe-shaped theater with an orchestra pit, a more intimate recital studio for chamber music and jazz concerts, an outdoor theater, and an open-air concert space. The building is an architectural marvel (it's the face of Singapore’s five-cent coins). The dome's spiky exterior has earned it the nickname “durian” in reference to the sometimes-polarizing Southeast Asian fruit. Anyone who loves architecture should swing by for a photo op.

Old Airport Road Food Singapore Hawker Center Market

Old Airport Road Food Centre Arrow

At more than 40 years old, Old Airport Road Food Centre is one of Singapore's best-loved hawker complexes , with 150 stalls spread across a single floor in neat rows. It can seem daunting, but as a general rule, a long line in front of a stall means excellent food. And while it can be quite a wait, food-obsessed Singaporeans will assure you that it's totally worth it. Dishes that demand your patience here include hokkien mee (fried yellow wheat noodles doused in a seafood stock and studded with prawns and pork) from Nam Sing Hokkien Mee, and silky beancurd pudding from Lao Ban Soya Beancurd.

Mint Museum of Toys Singapore

Mint Museum of Toys Arrow

The main reason people come to MINT is to see the private collection of toys, which includes more than 50,000 items (around 8,000 of which are on display) hailing from 40 countries and dating as far back as the 1840s. Beyond the toys, the permanent collection includes two galleries devoted to vintage enamel signs. The museum is rarely crowded, unless there is a special event going on. The collection itself is impressive, but some of the exhibits are too darkly lit and obscurem making this is a better stop for those with niche knowledge.

Singapore shop Sfir Aromatics perfume aroma

Sifr Aromatics Arrow

This one-of-a-kind, independently owned fragrance shop in Singapore's Kampong Glam neighborhood feels like a secret you want to keep to yourself. Owner Johari Kazura is a third-generation perfumer, but his approach to scents is more novel—and infinitely customizable. Several dozen perfumes and colognes are pre-made and part of his regular stable; others are mixed-to-order based on a customer's personal preferences. If you want a custom-blended scent, book a reservation in advance and block out at least 90 minutes for the session. (It's an excellent gift idea, too.)

Singapore Art Museum

Singapore Art Museum Arrow

SAM specializes in contemporary art from Singapore and Southeast Asia. When it opened in 1996 in a restored 19th-century Catholic boys school, it was the first art museum in the country. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in works by contemporary Asian artists. The collection covers multiple disciplines, including painting, photography, video, and sculpture.

Singapore is one of the more expensive Asian cities, especially for accommodation, and many items are priced at Western levels. On the other hand, with budget dormitory accommodation in plentiful supply, and both food and internal travel cheap, it’s possible to survive on £20/US$32 a day, though that would leave little for sightseeing. If you want to share a double room in a lower-mid-range hotel and enjoy one restaurant meal a day in addition to hawker-cooked food, your budget is likely to soar to £60/US$95 at least.

Malaysia Express from Singapore

A captivating 7-day tour that unveils the beauty of Malaysia, commencing from Singapore. Traverse the border into Malacca to uncover its rich heritage gems. Progress to Kuala Lumpur, where iconic landmarks await your exploration. Culminate your journey in George Town, Penang.

Note that Singapore has a 7 percent Goods and Services Tax (GST) , which is levied by all companies except small businesses. Prices in shops include GST, but it’s not uncommon for hotels and restaurants to leave it out, quoting prices with “++” at the end. In this case, the first plus indicates that they levy a ten percent service charge (as all mid-range and upmarket hotels and restaurants do) and the second plus indicates GST on the combined cost of the room or food and the service charge, that is, a 17.7 percent surcharge in total. Where two prices are given for a museum or other attraction in this book, the second price is for a child ticket unless otherwise stated.

If you lose something in Singapore, you’re more likely to have someone running after you with it than running away. Nevertheless, you shouldn’t be complacent – muggings have been known to occur and theft from dormitories by other tourists is not unknown. Singapore’s police, recognizable by their dark blue uniforms, keep a fairly low profile but are polite and helpful when approached.

Singapore is notorious for the fines that people found guilty of various misdemeanours are liable to pay. Though these fines aren’t often enforced – their severity has the intended deterrent effect on an already compliant public – it reveals something of the micro-managed state the island has become that, in principle, someone can be fined hundreds of dollars for smoking in certain public places and shopping malls, “jaywalking” (crossing a main road within 50m of a designated pedestrian crossing or overhead bridge) and littering. Even chewing gum has been banned (for the mess it creates when not disposed of properly), except when the gum contains prescribed medication.

While the above might seem amusing, the penalties for possession or trafficking illegal drugs are no laughing matter (foreigners have been executed in the past), and if you are arrested for drugs offences you can expect no mercy and little help from your consular representatives.

The rules of thumb often trotted out concerning behaviour in Asia apply much less to Singapore, given how Westernized the island can be. Nonetheless, appearances are deceptive, and it pays to bear a few points in mind to avoid causing offence.

Although Singaporeans are not especially prudish when it comes to dress , they may well frown upon public displays of affection, which aren’t really the done thing. It’s also not appropriate to pat children (or even friends, for that matter) on the head – the head being considered sacred in Buddhist culture. Conversely, the soles of the feet and, by extension, the soles of your shoes, are regarded as unclean, hence the need to remove footwear before stepping over the threshold when visiting people at home, at just about every guesthouse and before entering a temple or mosque.

One cliché about Asia that does still hold in Singapore concerns the importance of not losing face. A mistake or problem that might be regarded as trifling elsewhere might, here, be rather humiliating for the person responsible. The most likely situation in which visitors might need to bear this particular sensitivity in mind is when making a complaint . Rather than raising your voice and making a scene, it’s best to state your case politely but firmly; this will help preserve the dignity of whomever you are complaining to, and improve the chances of a speedy resolution of the issue.

To avoid losing face yourself, note that when it comes to meetings, the old Singaporean habit of nonchalantly showing up half an hour late for social and other engagements has been replaced by pretty stringent timekeeping , so be sure to set off early.

Finally, while there are generally few restrictions about what you can and can’t photograph , staff at some temples and other places of worship take a dim view of snapping pictures on their premises; when in doubt, always ask.

Singapore’s power supply is at 230 V/50 Hz, and British-style sockets – taking plugs with three square pins – are the standard.

British citizens, and those of the Republic of Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, don’t need a visa to enter Singapore. Regulations change from time to time, though, so check with the embassy before departure. You’ll normally be stamped in for at least thirty days.

It is possible to extend your stay by up to three months. This being Singapore, you can apply online: check the section on extending short-term visit passes at w ica.gov.sg , or call the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority on t 6391 6100 for more details. Otherwise, there’s always the option of taking a bus up to Johor Bahru, across the border in Malaysia, and then coming back in again with a new visit pass.

For a list of embassies in Singapore, as well as a list of Singapore embassies abroad, see the Missions section of w mfa.gov.sg .

Customs Upon entry from anywhere other than Malaysia you can bring into Singapore up to three litres in total of spirits, wine and beer duty-free ; duty is payable on all tobacco. For up-to-the-minute customs information, including how the alcohol allowance works in practice, go to w www.customs.gov.sg . Under certain conditions, tourists can reclaim the Goods and Services Tax (GST) of seven percent on the cost of items they have bought in Singapore; for more on the red tape this involves.

The levels of hygiene and medical care in Singapore are higher than in much of the rest of Southeast Asia. Tap water is drinkable throughout the island and all food for public consumption is prepared to exacting standards. No inoculations are required for visiting Singapore. However, it’s a wise precaution to visit your doctor no later than four weeks before you leave to check that you are up to date with your polio, typhoid, tetanus and hepatitis A inoculations. It pays to use mosquito repellent in Singapore, particularly if you’re in a nature reserve or beach area. This isn’t because Singapore is malarial – it isn’t – but because mosquitoes may carry dengue fever , an illness which is seldom fatal but can be debilitating while it lasts. Note that DEET-based repellents are not available in Singapore, so if you prefer these you will have to buy them abroad.

Travellers unused to tropical climates periodically suffer from sunburn and dehydration . The easiest way to avoid this is to restrict your exposure to the sun, use high-factor sunscreens, drink plenty of water, and wear sunglasses and a hat. Heat stroke is more serious: it is indicated by a high temperature, dry red skin and a fast pulse and can require hospitalization.

Medical services in Singapore are excellent, with staff almost everywhere speaking good English. Pharmacies are well stocked with familiar brand-name drugs, though only the largest outlets have pharmacists dispensing prescription medication; the two main chains are Guardian and Watsons, both ubiquitous. Private clinics are found throughout the city, even inside shopping malls such as the Tanglin Shopping Centre (19 Tanglin Rd) and Paragon (290 Orchard Rd). A consultation costs from $50. You can find a list of dentists at w www.yp.sg .

Before you set off, it’s a good idea to arrange travel insurance to cover medical expenses as well as loss of luggage, cancellation of flights and so on. A typical policy usually provides cover for the loss of baggage , tickets and – up to a certain limit – cash or cheques, as well as cancellation or curtailment of your journey. Most of them exclude so-called dangerous sports unless an extra premium is paid. When securing baggage cover, make sure that the per-article limit will cover your most valuable possession. If you need to make a claim, you should keep receipts for medicines and medical treatment, and in the event that you have anything stolen, you must obtain an official statement from the police.

The best place to look for internet cafés is Little India, where they are ubiquitous and charge as little as $2 per hour. Chinatown and Orchard Road have a sprinkling of internet cafés too, though they may charge quite a bit more. Several café chains offer free wi-fi, too. It’s also possible to sign up for the free Wireless@SG wi-fi service available in the lobbies of many shopping malls; though not always reliable, it’s mighty convenient when it works. One site where you can sign up is at bit.ly/dw6fFX. The snag is that you will need a friend with a Singapore mobile phone, as the system can only send your password by SMS to a local number.

For unlimited Wi-Fi on the go whilst travelling Singapore, buy a Skyroam Solis , which works in 130+ countries at one flat daily rate, paid for on a pay-as-you-go basis. You can connect up to five devices at once. Prices start from as little as €5 a day.

Singapore’s postal system is predictably efficient. The island has dozens of post offices (typically Mon–Fri 9.30am–6pm & Sat 9.30am–2pm), including one conveniently off Orchard Road at 1 Killiney Rd (near Somerset MRT) that keeps extended hours (Mon–Fri 9.30am–9pm, Sat 9.30am–4pm, Sun 10.30am–4pm). Poste restante/general delivery (bring proof of ID) is at the Singapore Post Centre, 10 Eunos Rd (near Paya Lebar MRT; Mon–Fri 8am–6pm, Sat 8am–2pm). For more on the mail system, contact SingPost ( t 1605, w www.singpost.com ).

The best maps of Singapore are those at w streetdirectory.com , also accessible via the Singapore Maps app. Besides being totally up to speed with the constant rebuilding and reshaping of Singapore, these maps include handy features such as the ability to view shops inside buildings by clicking, and clicking on bus stops to reveal which buses serve them and when the next services will arrive. Bookshops sell printed versions of these maps as street atlases, with new editions regularly published. Otherwise, the maps in this book should be sufficient for most of your exploration, and you can back them up with free foldout maps available from the Singapore Tourism Board.

Singapore’s currency is the Singapore dollar, divided into 100 cents. Notes are issued in denominations of $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, $500, $1000 and $10,000; coins are in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, and $1. At the time of writing, the exchange rate was around $2 to £1 and $1.25 to US$1. All dollar prices in this book are in local currency unless otherwise stated.

Singapore banking hours are generally Monday to Friday 9.30am to 3pm (although some open until 6pm), Saturday 9.30am to 12.30pm. Major branches on Orchard Road are open Sunday 9.30am to 3pm as well. Outside of these hours, currency exchange is available at moneychangers, whose rates are comparable to those at banks. Major hotels also offer currency exchange, though don’t expect their rates to be competitive.

ATMs are plentiful around Singapore and take most types of debit and credit card, usually charging a fee for each withdrawal. Larger retailers and companies accept all major cards, and there are often adverts in the press offering discounts on shopping and meals if you pay with your card.

Shopping centres are open daily 10am to 9.30pm, while offices generally work Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm and sometimes on Saturday mornings. In general, Chinese temples open daily from 7am to around 6pm, Hindu temples 6am to noon and 5 to 9pm, and mosques 8.30am to noon and 2.30 to 4pm.

Singapore has numerous public holidays , reflecting its mix of cultures. Dates for some of these vary; with Muslim festivals, we’ve given the months in which they fall during 2013–15.

It’s worth noting the dates of local school holidays , at which time Sentosa and other places of interest to kids can be inordinately crowded: schools take a break for one week in March and September, throughout June and from mid-November until the end of December.

Local calls from private phones in Singapore cost next to nothing; calls from public phones cost 10c for three minutes. Nearly all phone numbers have eight digits (except for a few free or premium-rate numbers, which start with 1800 or 1900 respectively). Land-line numbers always begin with 6 and mobile numbers with 8 or 9; there are no area codes.

Local SIM cards are available from any 7-11 store or Singtel/Starhub shop. Prices vary depending on what packages are being promoted, though expect to pay at least $10, and bring your passport to complete the registration process. Note that on Singapore networks, receiving calls and texts on your phone incurs a charge.

Singapore has a good range of sports facilities, including one of the best networks of swimming pools anywhere – almost every new town has its own open-air 50m pool. A full list of state-run sports centres appears at w ssc.gov.sg; some venues, including privately run facilities, are listed below.

Golf The Marina Bay Golf Course at 80 Rhu Cross ( t 6345 7788, w mbgc.com.sg ), next to the Bay East garden, is one of the most central and reasonably priced golf facilities, and as such it tends to get booked up quickly – best to reserve a slot at least a couple of weeks in advance (mornings are less busy). Nine holes costs $83 on weekdays, including use of a golf buggy. Bus #158 from Aljunied MRT.

Gyms The main operators are California Fitness ( w californiafitness.com), True Fitness ( w truefitness.com.sg ) and Fitness First ( w www.fitnessfirst.com.sg ). All have gyms downtown, though you will need to take out membership to use them.

Swimming The most conveniently located of the island’s Olympic-sized pools is at the Jalan Besar Swimming Complex on Tyrwhitt Rd ( t 6293 9058). Farrer Park or Lavender MRT. Daily 8am–9.30pm (Wed from 2.30pm). Other pools are listed at w singaporeswimming.com.sg .

Tennis Farrer Park Tennis Centre, 1 Rutland Rd t 6299 4166 (daily 7am–10pm; Farrer Park or Little India MRT); Kallang Tennis Centre, 52 Stadium Rd t 6348 1291 (daily 7am–10pm; Mountbatten MRT).

Singapore is eight hours ahead of Universal Time (GMT) year-round, and therefore two hours behind Sydney (when daylight saving time is not in effect there) and thirteen hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time.

There are a few cases where you might want to tip someone offering you a personal service, for example a hairdresser or barber, but these are the exception rather than the rule – tipping is seldom the custom in Singapore. The better restaurants add a ten percent service charge to the bill anyway, and the inexpensive kopitiam -type diners don’t expect tips, nor do taxi drivers.

In a place as organized and wired-up as Singapore, it’s usually straightforward to get hold of accurate and comprehensive information of use to travellers: everything from public transport to sales taxes is extensively documented online, some companies provide toll-free t 1800 helplines, and many restaurants and shops have websites that are kept up to date.

The Singapore Tourism Board ( STB ; information line Mon–Fri 9am–6pm t 1800 736 2000, w yoursingapore.com ) and operates Visitors’ Centres at Changi Airport and downtown on Orchard Road, diagonally across from the 313@Somerset mall (daily 9.30am–10.30pm). Two smaller Visitors’ Centres exist on the ground floor of the ION Orchard mall (above Orchard MRT; daily 10am–10pm), and behind the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Chinatown (Mon–Fri 9am–9pm, Sat & Sun 9am–10pm).

If you have a particular interest In Singapore’s past and architectural heritage, you can get booklets providing background on downtown districts from the Singapore City Gallery, or download them from w ura.gov.sg/rediscover .

A number of publications offer entertainment listings plus reviews of restaurants and nightlife. The best of these are the weeklies I-S ( w is-magazine.com; free) and the monthly Time Out ( w timeoutsingapore.com ; $4). Other freebie publications available from Visitors’ Centres and hotels contain similar information, and the “Life!” section of the Straits Times also has a decent listings section. Geared towards the large expat community (though with some information of interest to tourists) are The Finder , a free monthly magazine available at some downtown bars and restaurants, and the website w expatsingapore.com .

Singapore is a moderately accessible city for travellers with disabilities . Many hotels and even a handful of guesthouses make provision for disabled guests, though often there will be only one accessible room in the smaller establishments – always call ahead and book in plenty of time.

Getting around Singapore is relatively straightforward. MRT stations and trains are built to assist passengers using wheelchairs or with impaired sight or hearing, while around 100 bus routes are now fully served by accessible buses, though some stops may not be suitable for wheelchair users. For more details, check the “Accessibility” section of w smrt.com.sg , and the “WAB services” section of w sbstransit.com.sg . If you can afford to use taxis all the time, so much the better; SMRT taxis ( t 6555 8888) are wheelchair-accessible, and Comfort Taxis and CityCab (both on t 6552 1111) have drivers trained to assist wheelchair-bound passengers.

The best people to talk to for pre-trip advice are the Disabled People’s Association of Singapore ( t 6899 1220, w dpa.org.sg ) or the Singapore Tourism Board. You may also want to consult one local tour operator, the Asia Travel Group ( t 6438 0038, w asiatravelgroup.com.sg), which can arrange customized tours of the island in suitably equipped minibuses.

A variety of mobile apps can help you get the most out of your visit to Singapore. At the time of writing, all of the following were free and available for both iOS and Android devices.

Official weather forecasts, flood and dengue alerts, plus – so Singaporean – a hawker-centre locator.

SBS Transit Iris

Service information and journey planner for the North East and Circle MRT lines, and all of SBS’s buses.

Singapore Maps

Don’t bother with Google Maps while in Singapore – this app features super-accurate home-grown maps, based on state cartography, and includes real-time bus information and detailed business listings for each address.

SMRT Connect

Does the same for the rest of the MRT network, plus SMRT’s buses.

YourSingapore

The official app of the Singapore Tourism Board repackages content from their website and lets you locate nearby points of interest.

Frequently asked questions about things to do in Singapore

Can you explore singapore in a day.

Singapore is a small country, and it's possible to see many of the sights in a day. However, Singapore is also very noisy and busy, so it can be hard to appreciate everything in such a short amount of time.

Plus, with the heat and humidity, it's easy to get tired and grumpy when you're walking around all day.

If you're only in Singapore for a day, my advice would be to just pick a few things that you really want to see and take your time enjoying them. Don't try to pack too much into your schedule, or you'll just end up feeling stressed out.

And if you do find yourself getting tired, there's no shame in taking a break in one of the air-conditioned malls! Singapore may be small, but there's still plenty to see and do. Just pace yourself, and enjoy your day.

What is the best area to stay in Singapore?

Singapore is divided into several regions, each with its own distinct character. The best area to stay in Singapore depends on what you are looking for in a vacation.

If you want to experience the traditional culture of Singapore, then you should stay in Chinatown or Little India . These areas are rich in history and offer a glimpse into Singapore in years past.

If you are more interested in the modern side of Singapore, then you should stay in Orchard Road or Marina Bay . These areas are full of high-end shops and restaurants, and they offer a more contemporary experience.

Is Singapore safe?

Singapore is often lauded as one of the safest countries in the world. And it's true- the city-state has a very low crime rate, and strict laws help to keep residents safe. But that doesn't mean that Singapore is completely free of danger.

Just like anywhere else, there are always risks present- from slipping on a wet floor to being hit by a car. So while Singapore may be safe overall, it's still important to be careful and stay alert. After all, as the saying goes, "Safety first!"

What is the number 1 tourist attraction in Singapore?

Singapore is best known for its diverse culture, food, and architecture. The city is home to a variety of attractions, including the Singapore Zoo , Sentosa Island , and Universal Studios Singapore .

However, Singapore's number one tourist attraction is the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The gardens span 74 hectares and feature a wide range of plant life, from iconic orchids to rare palms. In addition, the gardens are home to the National Orchid Garden, which houses more than 60,000 orchids.

With its stunning scenery and wealth of plant life, it's no wonder that the Singapore Botanic Gardens is the top tourist destination in Singapore.

What is the best month to visit Singapore?

Singapore is a great place to visit any time of year. However, if you're looking for the best month to enjoy all that this city has to offer, I would recommend December. The weather is perfect at this time of year - not too hot and not too humid.

Plus, Singapore comes alive during December with a wide range of festive events and activities. From decorating the streets with colorful lights to hosting huge Christmas markets, Singapore really knows how to celebrate the holiday season.

Is Singapore expensive to visit?

Singapore is definitely an expensive city to visit! Everything from hotels and food to transportation and activities can be quite costly. However, there are ways to save money while you're in Singapore.

For example, take advantage of the many free activities the city has to offer, like visiting one of the many parks or taking a walk through Chinatown.

You can also save on food by eating at Hawker Centers, which offer delicious Singaporean cuisine at a fraction of the cost of a restaurant meal.

With a little planning and creativity, you can definitely enjoy your time in Singapore without breaking the bank!

Our guide to hotels and where to stay in Singapore

5 star hotels in singapore.

Singapore is renowned for its luxury hotels offering guests five-star service and top-notch amenities. Singapore is the perfect place to stay if you’re looking for a luxurious and relaxing vacation.

However, be prepared to shell out some serious cash – Singapore is one of the most expensive cities in the world. But hey, when you’re staying in a hotel with its own private infinity pool, who will complain? Singapore may be small, but it definitely packs a punch when it comes to luxury hotels.

Best budget hotels in Singapore

Many great budget hotels in Singapore offer clean and comfortable accommodations without breaking the bank.

One of our favourites is the Hanoi Guesthouse, which offers simple but spacious rooms starting from just $35 a night.

Integrated resorts in Singapore

An integrated resort is a Singaporean euphemism for a casino-based vacation resort. Alas, the integrated resorts don’t revolve solely around gambling.

Besides being the first casinos in a country more well-known for its conservative culture, the integrated resort aim to offer a complete lifestyle experience – everything from wholesome entertainment to luxurious stays.

Today (June 21, 2017): Trip report: Singapore Airlines A350 Business Class Düsseldorf to Singapore .

On April 22nd 2017, I flew Business Class in a brand new Airbus A350-900 of Singapore Airlines (SQ) from Germany’s third largest airport, Düsseldorf International Airport (DUS), to one of Asia’s busiest hubs, Changi International Airport (SIN). SQ is often regarded as one of the world’s best carriers, no matter the class you are flying in. Reputation matters and with great service, delicious food, excellent inflight entertainment, and the always smiling Singapore Girl, the SQ A350 experience lived up to expectation although the experience would have been even better with the addition of an amenity kit, a tail camera, and a more comfortable flat bed. To my own surprise, there were only 4 passengers in Business Class on this 11 hour 30 minute flight, so the whole experience felt like a private flight.

SQ features in my top 10 list of the best airlines for longhaul Business Class .

  • Trip: DUS-SIN
  • Airline: Singapore Airlines
  • Aircraft type: A350-900

1. COST OF MY TICKET

The cost of my one-way ticket from Düsseldorf to Singapore was 240 euros + 65,000 Miles& More miles. Miles and More is the frequent flyer program of SQ’s Star Alliance partner Lufthansa.

2. LUFTHANSA BUSINESS LOUNGE AT DÜSSELDORF AIRPORT

As SQ doesn’t have its own lounge at Düsseldorf Airport, its passengers flying in Business Class or those that hold elite status with Star Alliance have access to the Lufthansa Business Lounge, which is located one floor above the airport’s main concourse. IMHO, the large, rectangularly shaped space lacks atmosphere, because of its functional and rather old and univiting decor, as well as because of the lack of day light, since there is a corridor between the small rooms and the lounge. The lounge has several seating areas with comfortable leather arm chairs. One side of the lounge features several rows of arm chairs in front of a large tv screen, while the other side features several dining tables and a few high-end tables, adjacent to a smoking room. At the center, there are a few work cubicles with computers, as well as a newsstand with complimentary German and international papers. The main food station is located near the lounge’s entrance, with a second smaller station –mainly serving beverages and a few snacks and candies – is located near the TV corner. I visited the lounge in the early morning hours when breakfast was served. Both food selection and presentation was disappointingly mediocre, so if you want to have a decent meal, you’re better of in one of the restaurants in the airport’s shopping mall.

The lounge is located in the Schengen zone of the airport. Consequently, you still have to go through border control to get to the gate (and thus leave the lounge around 1O minutes prior to boarding time).

3. FACTS & FIGURES ABOUT  SINGAPORE AIRLINES’ A350

Here are some (fun) facts about the A350 XWB as provided by  Airbus  and Singapore Airlines :

  • The A350 XWB is the world’s most technologically advanced commercial aircraft, competing with both the Boeing 787 and the Boeing 777.
  • 70% of the airframe is made of advanced materials combining composites (53%), titanium and modern aluminum alloys. Composite materials are corrosion and fatigue free resulting in easier maintenance, while titanium is a lightweight and corrosion-resistant substitute for steel.
  • Eco-smart design brings more than 25% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the previous generation of aircraft.
  • Advanced pure air filtration system changes cabin air every 2–3 minutes.
  • The A350 XWB is powered by the new Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, generating 25% lower CO2 emissions.
  • The A350 XWB has been awarded Common Type Rating with the A330, and it takes only one week for a pilot to transit from the A330 to the A350.
  • Draft-free air conditioning, adjustable temperature zones and the cabin air pressure, which is closer to the sea level air pressure, make the flight more enjoyable and less tiring for passengers.
  • The total height of the Airbus A350 XWB is equivalent to the famous obelisk monument Place de la Concorde in Paris (17 meters or 55 feet).
  • The length of an Airbus A350-900 is close to the width of a rugby field (around 67 meters or 219 feet).
  • The wings of the A350 XWB cover more than 2 tennis courts (443 m2 or 4768 square feet) and – inspired by birds – change their shape while airborne to reduce fuel burn.
  • The diameter of the A350 XWB Roll-Royce Trent XWB engine is the same as the diameter of the Concorde fuselage!
  • Currently, SQ has 13 A350-900 aircraft in its fleet, with another 56 on order, including 7 ultra-long-haul A350-900ULR variants. The latter will be used on the SQ routes from Singapore to Los Angeles and New York, which – when launched in 2018 – will be the longest flights in the world.

4. BUSINESS CLASS CABIN

The SQ A350 aircraft features 3 classes: Business Class (42 flat bed seats), Premium Economy Class (with 24 recliner seats), and Economy Class (187 standard seats). SQ does not offer a First Class on its A350 fleet, which is not that problematic since SQ’s Business Class is better than First Class on most airlines. The 42 Business Class seats are spread over 2 cabins: a larger cabin in the front of the plane holds the bulk of the seats (26 in total), while the remaining 16 seats are located in a much smaller and more intimate cabin  over the wings (in front of the Premium Economy Class). All seats face forward, offer direct aisle access, and are arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration. The two seats in the center have a partition screen that can be raised for added privacy. There are no overhead bins above the middle seats, which allows for much higher ceilings, creating a senses of space throughout both cabins. The cabin features a drop-dead gorgeous design that was developed by James Parker Associated, the company that also created the opulent interiors of the Orient Express. The color palette in the cabin is a mix of bronzy gold, beige, purple, and chocolate-brown, with plush checked throw pillows that contrast with the dark leather seats.

5. BUSINESS CLASS SEAT (+ BEST & WORST SEATS)

I had selected seat 15A – a window seat – for the 11h30min flight to Singapore. Remarkably, there were only 4 passengers in the first cabin and nobody in the second cabin, so SQ won’t have made any profits on this particular flight. It felt like a private flight (or at least what I imagine a private flight must feel like).

Handcrafted from Scottish leather and diamond-stitched, the seat is one of the widest in the industry, albeit a tad more narrow than the seats on SQ’s A380 and B777 aircraft (which are judged by some to be too wide for comfort). The seat features a pitch of 1,53 cm (60 inch) and a width of 71 cm (20 inch), so there’s more than enough space to comfortably move around. The suite’s wall is quite high, and gets wider on eye level, providing reasonable privacy from passengers sitting on the other side of the aisle. As mentioned above, the seats in the center have a partition screen between them that can be raised for added privacy, although you will still see your neighbour’s monitor when in normal seated position.

One side of the seats features a reading light on eye level and a control panel – to adjust the seat position – in the aisle-side arm rest. A decently sized tray table – who’s hight and position can be adjusted – is stored away in the other arm rest, with an easily jabbed remote control for the inflight entertainment system (more on that below) above it. In front of the seat is a large 18 inch (45 cm) TV screen, with a coat hook next to it. There are a lot of storage compartments in the suite: two small cubby holes located next to the TV screen (one of them with a vanity mirror to make sure you look great throughout the entire flight), a storage box in the arm rest (which can be used for a bottle of water and/or your personal belongings such as your glasses, wallet and cellphone) and a side console above the arm rest, which let you stow and conveniently reach for your laptop (albeit not during takeoff and landing).

The seat offers several pre-programmed seating positions,  including ‘Lazy Z’, a cradling position that ensures your weight is centered and balanced when you’re sitting down, and the ‘Sundeck’, a lounging position that extends the base and foot of your seat so you can stretch and rest your legs on the ottoman.

In the seated position, it’s hard to imagine a Business Class seat done better. However, it’s a somewhat different story when it comes to sleeping. First of all, turning the seat into the 78 inch (198 cm) long flat bed position is not a straightforward process controlled by one push on a button. Instead, you need to put the seat first to its upright position, stand up yourself, and then manually fold the seatback forward (a manoeuvre which will also reveal a blanket and pillow hidden behind the seat back). The good new though is that the cabin crew is more than happy to assist you in this proces and will make up the bed for you. But the problems are not completely over once the seat is fully reclined: to stretch your legs, you need to lay diagonally on the bed and force your feet in a narrow cubby at the end instead of spreading them free. Because of this set-up the flat bed is not comfortable for travelers who prefer to sleep on their side. The only exception are the bulkhead seats on row 11 and 19, which feature a full-width ottoman (center seats) or larger foot rest combined with an ottoman (window seats) instead of a narrow footrest, and are thus the best seats on the plane (and far superior to all other Business Class seats). Another problem with this Business Class set up is that once you are committed to the bed, there’s no way back. If you wake up and want to revert back to a regular seat, your bed is gone.

What are the best Business Class seats  on SQ’s A350-900? Click here for a seat map of SQ’s A350-900.

  • Window seats are the best option for solo travelers since they provide a little more privacy, while travel companions should go for the center seats.
  • Bulkhead seats on row 11 and 19 are far superior to all other seats since they feature a full-width ottoman instead of a narrow foot rest, allowing a much more comfortable sleeping position.
  • The seats from row 19 to 22 are located in their own little private cabin and are therefore highly recommended.

What are the worst Business Class seats  on SQ’s A350-900? Click here for a seat map of SQ’s A350-900.

  • I suggest to avoid the window seats in row 17 and center seats in row 18 due to their proximity to the galley and lavatories.
  • I also suggest to avoid row 22 because it is located in front of the Premium Economy bassinet seats (so you may end up being close to young children).

6. AMENITIES

Unfortunately, SQ doesn’t offer amenity kits in Business Class on any flights. Passengers in the premium cabin only receive slippers, socks, and eye shades. Bathroom amenities – such as shaving kits, toothbrushes, tooth paste, hand lotion and perfume – are available though in the toilets. When I asked one of the flight attendants for an amenity kit during this particular flight, she came back a few minutes later with some bathroom products (from the toilet) in addition to some postcards, playing cards and children’s toys (although I am a full-grown man of 40 years old). A surreal but nice gesture nonetheless.

Noise canceling headphones (to block the noise from the engines and cabin) are provided, although you can not take them home with you.

singapore travel expert

SQ enjoys a stellar culinary reputation, which is reflected in its collaboration with world-acclaimed chefs who own Michelin-starred restaurants, like Singaporean culinary maestro Sam Leong, Suzanne Goin of Los Angeles’ Lucques, Carlo Cracco of the Michelin two-star restaurant of the same name in Milan, and Matthew Moran of one of Sydney’s finest restaurants. The airline is famous for its ‘Book the Cook’ service where you can select your gourmet main course from a premium selection of dishes at least 24 hours before departure.

Unfortunately, the ‘Book the Cook’ service was not available on this Düsseldorf to Singapore route, and while the food was excellent (and clearly a step above that served on other airlines), I was not blown away by the meals, somewhat contrary to my previous SQ flight experiences.

Shortly after takeoff, the following lunch was served:

  • Singapore chicken and lamb satay, with onion, cucumber, and spicy peanut sauce.
  • Salmon Riletto, with potato allumette, picked apple, red onion and fine salad leaves
  • Pan seared lamb loin, with roasted vegetables, leek-potato gratin and thyme sauce
  • Black forest gateaux, with blueberry compote and vanilla sauce

After dinner, the crew passed by with a fruit bowl and a chocolate box, from which you could choose a selection.

Mid-flight, I ordered a snack – Oriental noodles with chicken and black mushrooms – which tasted quite good.

Ninety minutes prior to landing, above the Gulf Of Bengal, the following breakfast was served:

  • Selection of sliced fresh fruits
  • Cornflakes with skim milk
  • Fruit yoghurt
  • Bircher muesli with fruit
  • Poached eggs with Hollondaise sauce, with pan-fried bacon, sautéed mushrooms, creamed spinach, and roasted potatoes

8. ENTERTAINMENT

The 18 inch (45 cm) LCD screen in front of each Business Class has no touchscreen function and you need to use a video touchscreen handset located above the armrest to command Krisworld, SQ’s inflight entertainment system. The latter features an impressive selection of 1,000 entertainment options, with tons and tons of movies, television programmes, music, games and apps.

SQ also offers a Companion App that allows you to discover what is playing on KrisWorld even before you step onboard. Via the app, you can browse content pre-flight and place movies and TV shows in a folder that you can access on board by linking your smartphone to your tv screen. You simply need to download the free SingaporeAir mobile app from Google Play or App Store to enjoy this features.

Wifi is available on SQ’s A350 and of reasonable speed. To access the onboard internet, you need to enable WiFi on your smart phone, tablet or laptop, and connect to the ‘KrisWorld’ or ‘OnAir’ network. WiFi was not complimentary and charged at the following rates: US$11.95 for one hour; US$16.95 for 3 hours; and US$21.95 for the entire flight.

Contrary to all other airlines, and to my own great disappointment, SQ hasn’t installed tail cameras on their A350 aircraft.

9. OTHER INFLIGHT EXPERIENCES

#CREW : Dressed in her signature sarong kebaya, the female SQ flight attendant is the symbol of Asian hospitality recognised the world over. But besides being an iconic eyecatcher, SQ cabin crew – both male and female – are often regarded as the best in the industry, and with good reason. They address every customer by name and do all they can to make your flight as enjoyable as possible. Having said that, I do feel that SQ’s older cabin crew members are always a little more friendly than SQ’s younger, somewhat less experienced cabin crew members.

# BAR : The SQ A350 does not feature a walk-up bar, but you can order snacks from the menu at any time during the flight.

# TOILET : There are 3 toilets, one behind the cockpit and two located between the two Business Class cabins.

  • Inflight entertainment: 9/10
  • Service: 8/10
  • Cabin ambience: 9/10
  • Overall experience: very good: 8,4/10

It’s really shocking they don’t offer amenity kit on long-haul flight like this.

55,000 miles isn’t correct. Can you show me where on the LH partner award chart it says Europe to SE Asia is 55k?

I have flown Biz-class on SQ, BOM-SIN-BOM, on a B777 which seems to have the same seats as the A350. Outbound was a horrendous experience, since we had seats in the second row. In an upright or deck-chair position, it was just about tolerable…but sleeping was virtually impossible. And the seat in front plus screen was right in your face, making one feel claustrophobic. Inbound was MUCH better, since I took the window-seat in the first row (11A) and I thoroughly agree with you that it is a vastly superior experience…in fact, a totally different one. The first row in the cabin is the ONLY way to go…otherwise avoid.

Your trip reports are incredibly detailed. Thanks for your efforts in filming and editing.

GJ!! I haven’t flown this Business Class yet! I really want too!!

I have a Trip booked on the A350 for next May/June. They have Rows 11 and 19 blocked off. Row 19 is blocked off for people wanting a bassinet and told that Row 11 is blocked off for those with an accompying child. SA did say that 48 hours before my flight they will release any of the seats in these rows that have not been taken. Have currently booked seats 12A but hope I can move up to 11A. Think it will be quieter than Row 19 which is behind the main Galley and toilets.

Your reviews are always interesting. Your foto’s less so. We dont need to see 7 (amateurish) fotos of the plane at the gate. We don’t need to see a zillion foto’s of Lufthansa’s lounge (gave up counting them). I get that you’re sponsored but I wouldn’t want to see these fotos even if I was the sponsor. 1 foto (max) of the plane at the gate is enough. Other than that, keep up the good work.

Thx for your feedback. One correction: I am not sponsored 😉.

I like the plane photos. Correction *photos* not *fotos*.

Singapore to begin passportless immigration clearance using QR codes

eileen-yu

Travelers driving through Singapore's land borders will soon be able to clear immigration using a  QR code , removing the need to flash their passports.

The QR codes can be generated via the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) mobile app before travelers arrive at the Woodlands or Tuas checkpoints at the border with neighboring Malaysia.

Also: Cybersecurity 101: Everything on how to protect your privacy

The QR codes are scanned at the immigration counter, where one code can be generated for all travelers in the same vehicle, according to ICA. The codes are encrypted and can only be retrieved, and decrypted, by the immigration authority. This passport-free option will be available from March 19.

After downloading the MyICA app from either the Google Play Store or Apple's App Store , users must then fill in their passport details in the app to generate a one-time QR code.

Singapore residents can log in via the national digital authentication platform, SingPass , to automatically fill in their passport details when they tap the MyICA icon. They can also use the app's camera feature to scan the MRZ (machine-readable zone) of their passport biodata page.

Also: The best VPN services (and how to choose the right one for you)

Foreign travelers who have previously visited Singapore can use the app's camera feature to do the same.

First-time visitors to Singapore or those re-entering the country with a different passport from their previous visit will still have to show their physical passports for immigration clearance, ICA said. They can then use the QR code option on subsequent visits.

Travelers in the same vehicle can choose to collectively generate one QR code for immigration clearance, with their passport details stored via the MyICA app on one person's phone. Multiple QR codes can also be created for different traveling groups, where the passport details of up to 10 travelers can be grouped in one QR code and stored under a name, such as "Besties."

Also:  7 ways to make sure your data is ready for generative AI

The codes are scanned at QR code scanners located at the arrival and departure car counters at the two checkpoints. ICA officers will then access the data through the QR code and conduct face-to-face checks of travelers.

The immigration authority estimates that the new option will yield time savings of about 20 seconds for cars with four travelers, or one minute for vehicles with 10 travelers.

Waiting time can be reduced by at least 30% if most car travelers choose the QR code option for clearance, ICA said, adding that travelers can still pass through immigration using their physical passports.

Singapore first announced plans for the passportless QR code option last May, as an extension of its Automated Passenger In-Car Clearance System (APICS) to ease immigration clearance between the country and Malaysia.

Also:   4 ways generative AI can stimulate the economy

During live trials at the Woodlands checkpoint between June and October 2022, more than 400 cars and 700 travelers were cleared via APICS, with 94% going through the immigration process without assistance from officers. Contactless biometrics using  iris and facial recognition  processes immigration clearance via APICS.

Over the recent long holiday weekend from February 8 to 13, more than 2.33 million people crossed Singapore's land checkpoints , clocking an average of about 390,000 travelers daily. This is 35% higher than the daily average in 2023, ICA said, with some cars waiting up to three hours to clear immigration.

On March 8 alone, which is the date that marks the start of the week-long school holidays, 495,000 travelers crossed the two checkpoints. More than 1.8 million people did likewise over the weekend from March 7 to 10, according to ICA . The Woodlands Checkpoint today sees an average 300,000 travelers daily , up from 230,000 in 2000. This number is expected to hit 400,000 by 2050.
