Big Island of Hawaii

Big Island of Hawaii Travel Guide

Visitor info & top things to do on the big island, essential tips for the ultimate big island vacation experience.

The Big Island of Hawaii seems determined to break the norm; the stereotype of the average tropical island, that is. Here you'll find the ongoing battle between green forests, black lava fields, the ocean, and the rain almost incomprehensible; the diversity is simply stunning . You may find yourself wondering, "Is this an ancient landscape or a future one?"

We say the Big Island is ‘big’ - and we mean it! It is an island of such proportions that all of the other islands in the main Hawaiian chain could fit inside it nearly twice ! Sitting in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the landmass of the Big Island is approximately the same size as the state of Connecticut, about 4,050 square miles, and is still growing regularly thanks to Kilauea Volcano on the eastern coast of the island.

When to Visit the Big Island?

The best months to visit.

Knowing when to visit the Big Island of Hawaii is essential when planning your Big Island trip or vacation. Honestly, there's not a wrong time to visit the island - it has an incredibly wide diversity and geography that suits almost any type of traveler- from outdoor adventurer to poolside fixture.

But, that said, some months are still better when considering things like the weather and your budget.  The  best times  to visit  the Big Island of Hawaii, taking into consideration the weather, how crowded or not the island is, and the demand for accommodations, are the month(s) of April, May, August, September, and October.  Some call these Hawaii Island's 'off-season periods' or the 'shoulder months.'

There's more to cover on this topic before you make a final decision. In this article, we'll cover visitor arrivals, the Big Island's weather and climate, accommodations, rates, and what to expect on a visit during each season on the Big Island.

Where to Stay on the Big Island

Knowing where to stay on the Big Island is essential. The island is large (twice the size of all the other islands combined) and diverse. Many visitors find it challenging to decide upon an island accommodation. To assist the process, choose a location on the island that you will enjoy. Our guide will list some essential considerations to help you choose wisely.

Where Do You Stay on The Big Island?

Consider a location that affords you enough time to visit all of the most popular attractions. A week might cut it on smaller islands like Kauai, Maui, or Oahu. But the size of the Big Island requires more time to see all the worthwhile attractions. We suggest one week as a minimum, but two or three weeks are ideal. Plan to divide your time between the two primary halves of the island: the West Side and the East Side.

How to Maximize Your Stay From the West to the East of the Big Island

We suggest splitting your stay between Kailua-Kona on the west side and Hilo (or Volcano) on the east side during your trip. This will ease a lot of extra driving and allow you to experience both sides of the island. If you have only allocated a week to visit the island, four nights in Hilo and three in Kailua-Kona will suffice. Use that same ratio for more extended visits. Most visitors spend longer periods in Kailua-Kona since most hotels, upscale resorts, vacation rentals, and Big Island motels are here. The north of Kailua-Kona on the Kohala 'Gold' Coast hosts lodging options. Yet, since most of the Big Island's best attractions & sights are closer to Hilo, visitors should attempt to book accommodations in Hilo for at least half of their stay on the island.

In this detailed article, we'll look at the pros and cons of each area we've briefly discussed above.

Big Island Weather

Weather & climate on the big island.

Weather on the Big Island of Hawaii changes as rapidly as the terrain around it. No other island has the same diversity as the Big Island; not even by a long shot!

In some areas, rainfall can be absolutely zero; not a drop falls all year long, and the terrain reflects this- it's dry and barren. In other areas, it can be rainy every day of the year (as in Hilo or Puna), creating a lush paradise for visitors who enjoy that environment.

For the most part, the Big Island is warm and tropical year-round. In winter and summer, the average temperatures near the major resort areas (coastline) range from 75-85°F (23°C-29°C). At higher elevations like Volcano and Waimea, temperatures are often much cooler, especially during the night. Hilo can also have lower temperatures depending on how far mauka (inland) you travel. And, of course, the summit of Mauna Kea and flanks of Mauna Loa or Hualalai can be quite chilly, if not downright frigid. Plan for snow if you'll be visiting those areas.

Our Big Island of Hawaii Weather article has much more to cover.

These climate summaries, specific to the airport location, should therefore not be taken as a "whole-island" forecast. Weather conditions can change dramatically on the Big Island due to the diverse topography, changes in elevation, the trade winds, and other unique island conditions. Hawaii Island Regions

Popular destinations on the big island.

The Big Island of Hawaii, of course, is the  largest landmass  in the Hawaiian island chain- which consists of  eight major islands  and 124 islets. The archipelago is made up of numerous volcanic islands in the central Pacific Ocean stretching in a 1,500-mile crescent from Kure Island in the northwest to the Big Island of Hawaii in the east, encompassing an area of 6,459 square miles. The eight major islands at the eastern end of the chain are, from west to east, Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and the  Big Island of Hawaii .

With so many different climate zones and vastly different landscapes to explore, it can be hard to decide which part of the island to visit. Browse the Big Island of Hawaii regions below and learn about the many things to do, what to expect, and the diverse attractions of the island.

Kailua-Kona Region | Kohala Region | North Hamakua Region | Hilo Region | Puna Region | Volcano Region | South Kau Region | Saddle Rd Region

Kona (West) Side Big Island Destinations

Kona coast region, kailua-kona town, kealakekua, captain cook, honaunau, and more.

If you're heading to the Big Island there's certainly one area you cannot miss... the  Kona (West) Coast . This warm and sunny leeward area has become the resort hotspot of the island. In total, the Kona Coast stretches some 40 miles along the rugged west coast of the Big Island.

You'll find a vast array of ocean-side restaurants, grocery stores, shops, and activity huts promoting various water activities in the nearby Kailua Bay. Accommodations in Kailua-Kona are generally less expensive than along the Kohala gold coast (Waikoloa), and many resorts/condos are located along Ali'i Drive.

Many historical sites, beautiful beaches (some well-hidden), pristine bays, and lava fields (with prominent petroglyphs) criss-cross and line the coast of this area. North Kona has some of the most gorgeous white sand beaches on the island, like  Makalawena Beach  and Mahai'ula Beach located at  Kekaha Kai / Kona Coast State Park .

Kailua-Kona

Kohala 'Gold Coast' Region

Including waikoloa, waimea, and hawi.

On the far northwest tip of the Big Island is  Kohala , one of the most diverse areas on the island. This part of the Big Island started forming around 460,000 years ago and today includes the Kohala Mountains and the Kohala Ridge Road which straddles the mountain as it makes its way northwestward. Here you'll also discover the towns of  Waimea   (Kamuela) and   Hawi.

The distinction between the windward (wet) side of the island and the leeward (dry) side couldn't be more clear here. Northeast Kohala is green and lush, while the southwest side of the peninsula is dry and sometimes even barren. At one time this part of the Kohala Coast, fittingly called 'North Kohala,' was a area of flourishing sugar cane plantations. Today it has become dominated by one of North America's largest privately owned ranches - the  Parker Ranch .

The Kohala Coast region also includes an area called Waikoloa in 'South Kohala.' Some call this area the  gold coast  because of the many luxury resorts that have been engraved into ancient lava flows in this area. One of the most beautiful beaches on the island,  Hapuna Beach , is also located along this stretch.

Kohala Region

North coast & east big island destinations, north hamakua region, including waipi'o, honoka'a, laupahoehoe, and honomu.

On the  North Coast of the Big Island  lies the  Hamakua coast , one of the most beautiful stretches on the entire island. The North (Hamakua) Coast begins at the entrance to  Waipio Valley , at the end of the Kohala region, a once flourishing indigenous Hawaiian community, and ends at the outskirts of the Hilo region on the east side of the island.

Rainwater from the northern flanks of Mauna Kea along with snow from the summit of the great mountain flows down in countless streams along this part of the Big Island. The result is a mecca of stunning waterfalls and valleys. One such amazing falls are  Akaka Falls  and its surrounding State Park.

The main belt Highway (Highway 19) runs along the coast as the fastest route between Hilo and Kailua-Kona. Highway 19 often flirts with its predecessor, the Old Mamalahoa Highway, on which some amazing places and views can be found. The popular  Four Mile Scenic Route  is one such route off the main highway.

Hilo Region

The most notable location on the northeast side of the Big Island of Hawai'i is undoubtedly Hilo town. Hilo is the island's largest city (second largest in the state - population-wise) and also takes the title for the wettest city in the United States (70+ inches yearly).

Hilo is an especially lush city with several gorgeous orchid gardens, interesting parks (the most prominent being  Liliu'okalani Garden ), museums, and other various attractions. Hilo borders a beautiful bay and is often cooled by sea breezes and tradewind showers.

Hilo town remains the 'back door' of sorts for access to the central part of the island and its famous  Saddle Road .  Rainbow Falls State Park  and  Wailuku River State Park , featuring the Boiling Pots area and  Pe'epe'e Falls , are some of the larger natural attractions in town. Both parks are located on the same river just a few miles separate from one another.

Puna Region

Including Kea'au & Pahoa

East and south of Hilo is the  Puna district  and the funky little town of Pahoa (often called Hawai'i's outlaw town). This region is a diverse area of rain forests, lava fields, and rugged coastline.

One of the major attractions in Puna is the  Lava Tree State Park . In 1790 a lava flow passed through a forest of ohia trees, and today the molds of these trees are all that remain; it's a unique attraction to visit. In 2018, several other attractions in this region were destroyed by one of Kilauea's most recent eruptions.

Volcano Region

Including hawaii volcanoes national park, volcano village, and mountain view.

If there's one single hot-spot on the island (no pun intended) for visitors then it's definitely the Volcano area. The area, is of course, most famous for  Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park  (HVNP).

The most commonly asked question is always... "Will I get to see lava?" You might and you might not, it's really just the luck of the draw. Most of the lava traverses from Kilauea into the ocean via underground lava tubes (see  Nahuku Thurston Lava tube  for a look into an ancient tube). When surface flows do break out, you can usually get pretty close to them, safety permitting.

We honestly believe one of the biggest mistakes visitors make is that they do not devote enough time to the HVNP area. We highly encourage you to allow at least two whole days to this area, preferably starting from Hilo or another nearby town (like Volcano Village) each day.

South Coast Big Island Destinations

South Kau Region

Including Pahala, Punalu'u, South Point, and more

South Hawai'i is one of the quietest areas of the Big Island. Here you'll find no large hotels or resorts, no major golf courses, and no real push for tourism. It's wild country out here. So what makes it worth exploring? How about some unique beaches for starters.

The southern portion of the Big Island is home to two of the most unique beaches in the state,  Papakolea (Green Sand) Beach  to the northeast of  South Point , and  Punalu'u (Black Sand) Beach Park  off the Hawai'i Belt Road (Highway 11).

Central Big Island Destinations

Saddle road region guide, including mauna kea & mauna loa access.

A visit from the Hilo region to the Kona region (or Kona to Hilo) of the Big Island is a must on your visit. To do so you must drive the Saddle, a road that connects the east and west sides of the island passing between the island's two largest mountains, Mauna Loa (13,680 feet) and Mauna Kea (13,796 feet). The past few years there have been tremendous improvements to this entire area.

Today Saddle Road provides the only access to the Army Base, residential areas of Waikiki Ranch, Mauna Kea State Recreation Area, portions of Parker Ranch (mostly located in the Kohala Region), Kilohana Girl Scout Camp, Kaumana City, and Kaumana Caves County Park.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

#1 Rated in Sights to See on the Big Island

Originally founded in 1916, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HVNP) is a living, breathing testament to the awesome power of Mother Nature. HVNP is located 30 miles southwest of Hilo and 96 miles southeast of Kona. It's open year-round, 24 hours a day.

HVNP is home to Kilauea Volcano, the most continuously active volcano in the world, and the park offers the unique experience of walking on land that is younger than you are. In recognition of its outstanding natural values, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park has been honored as an International Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site.

The park encompasses 333,000 acres of natural wonders and is situated at 4,000 feet above sea level. With its wealth of trails, drives, and activities you will likely need at least two days to fully experience all the park has to offer.

#2 Rated in Sights to See on the Big Island

Akaka Falls State Park, along the northeastern Hamakua Coast, is home to two gorgeous waterfalls and an abundance of lush tropical greenery to delight visitors.

The stroll to reach Akaka Falls is almost as beautiful as the falls itself. After taking a short set of stairs, turn left and follow the paved pathway through amazing greenery and small waterfalls flowing into babbling streams.

You will hear the dull roar of the waterfall before you see it. Just as you round a corner, you'll catch a glimpse of Akaka Falls free-falling 442 ft. through a green-lined gorge.

Pololu Valley Overlook

#3 Rated in Sights to See on the Big Island

As you pass the 28-mile marker on Highway 270 past Hawi, the coast will open up and you will suddenly be treated to a breathtaking view of the lovely Pololu Valley.

On a sunny day, you will see the vibrant blue and green ocean crashing into the rugged sea cliffs and the deep green carpet of vegetation lining the sides of the valley.

A short walk to the lookout reveals the many folds and creases of the inner part of the valley which drop into a rich, green floor. Lines of ironwood trees divide the lush valley from the grainy black sand beach that meets the ocean.

Puuhonua o Honaunau Historical Park

Kailua-Kona Region

#4 rated in sights to see on the big island.

Pu'uhonua o Honaunau (poo-oo-ho-noo-ah o hoe-now-now), formerly known as Place of Refuge at Honaunau, is an incredibly beautiful and educational experience that no trip to the Big Island should be without.

After paying your vehicle entrance fee and walking past the educational displays, you round a corner and are transplanted into the world of the ancient Hawaiians. On this scorched land of sand and lava rock, the ali'i (ruling class) of Hawaii made their home.

Visitors can explore how the Hawaiians worked and played underneath the shade of Honaunau's stately palms. Great snorkeling is available nearby at  Two Step  at Keone'ele Cove.

#1 Rated Beach on the Big Island

Like anything worthwhile, Makalawena, or Mak, Beach makes you work a little bit to enjoy it. It's about a 20-minute walk across the lava to the beach, but don't worry, the path is well worn through the a'a flow.

This secluded white sand beach is a crescent broken up by rocky lumps of lava. Palms and other trees rim the dunes near the northern end where you are greeted with picnic tables and some wild chickens.

It's not likely that you will run into many people here and thus you'll likely be able to enjoy the most scenic beach on the island in solitude.

Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden

#5 rated in sights to see on the big island.

This isn't a free attraction, but we still encourage all visitors to make some time and stop at one of the most beautiful botanical gardens you'll find anywhere: the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden.

This stunning rainforest preserve is touted as one of the most beautiful locations in Hawaii; a distinction it well deserves. With the aid of the map provided by the garden, you will easily spend several hours ambling through the various sections of this magical lush wonderland. Every twist and turn leads to a new plant or tree.

Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve & Botanical Garden

Hapuna Beach State Park

#2 Rated Beach on the Big Island

This is an extremely popular beach for both locals and visitors. Conde Nast Traveler magazine has often ranked it as one of the top beaches in the US. It is hard to argue with this half-mile stretch of pristine golden sand and crystal blue water.

There are several covered pavilions to enjoy an afternoon picnic and restrooms, albeit rather pitiful ones, are available. There is occasionally a lifeguard on duty...despite the "no lifeguard on duty" sign.

Don't expect a lot of shade on this beach. Consequently, the golden sand heats to an unbearable temperature on a sunny day. During the summer months, the sand reaches 200 feet wide, so unless you want steaming toes wear sandals or water shoes. In the summer, the water is generally calm, but in the winter the surf can be treacherous. Be sure to monitor conditions carefully before entering. For snorkelers, the south end of the beach provides a variety of fish and coral.

Manini'owali Beach at Kua Bay

#3 rated beach on the big island.

Kua Bay, also called Manini'owali Beach, is a lovely little pocket of sand that used to be very difficult to access, but since a multi-million dollar road has been paved right through the lava- it's a snap to enjoy this Big Island gem.

Kua Bay beach has full facilities including restrooms and showers, water, barbecues and picnic tables. It is very popular on the weekends, not to mention parking can be a nightmare, so you might want to aim for the weekdays.

When the water is calm, swimming is great here - some of the best in Kona. However, if the waves are going strong and the surf is up, stay out because it can be extremely dangerous.

Manini'owali Beach in Kua Bay

Waipio Valley Overlook

Kohala & north hamakua region, #6 rated in sights to see on the big island.

Located along the Hamakua Coast on the northeastern coast of the Big Island of Hawai'i, Waipi'o Valley is the largest and southernmost of the seven valleys on the windward side of the Kohala Mountains.

Time and nature's elements have carved an unimaginably massive valley filled with deep green-encrusted cliffs cut by plunging waterfalls. Its floor is carpeted with forests and neatly formed taro patches interspersed with the homes of its few residents.

At the mouth of the valley, the ocean licks the mile-long black sand beach which is sliced in half by the river that is partially fed by the 1,200 ft. free-falling  Hi'ilawe Falls  which resides deep in the valley.

Waipio Valley

Kilauea Iki Trail

#1 Rated Hike on the Big Island

As you stand at the  Kilauea Iki overlook inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, you can see a lightly-etched trail stretching across the crater floor. From your 400 ft high vantage point you might be able to see little specks walking the path: those are people!

Kilauea Iki is an approximately four-mile loop that takes 2-3 hours. It skirts the rim of the crater, dips down and across the floor and back up to the overlook. The portion of Crater Rim Trail that runs along the rim is a dense high-elevation jungle populated with flowering ohia trees and graceful ferns.

Best things to do on hawaii island.

The youngest and largest Hawaiian island is the story of Hawaii’s creation – literally.

Millenia younger than its sister islands, Hawaii Island – known as the Big Island – continues to grow as molten lava pours forth and adds to this awe-inspiring island.

The island’s youth offers a rare chance to experience a different kind of Hawaii. Visitors to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on our  tour  can view an active, smoldering crater; and learn how these volcanoes gave birth to Hawaii. The isle’s black sand beaches are the color of cooled lava, and are common nesting sites for sea turtles.

As primeval as the volcanoes are, there are also contemporary pleasures. Sweet papayas, aromatic coffees, and exotic florals are all grown on the Big Island, where the rich volcanic soil offer fertile grounds for island agriculture. The island’s excellent ocean waters are wonderful for fishing, sailing, diving and swimming with graceful manta rays. You can enjoy the beauty of Rainbow Falls, delight in locally made sweets, and explore fascinating historic sites including the birthplace of King Kamehameha I. Enjoy many of the Big Island’s most famous attractions on our  Hawaii Grand Circle Island Tour .

Hawaii Island is as powerful, wondrous, and real as life itself. May your visit be the same.

Hawaii Geo Tours are the best!

Wow! Fantastic tour of the erupting volcano!!! The guides are geologists and explained so much about the volcano and how all the Hawaiian islands were created. The pictures I got during the day, and especially at night were incredible! The food and winery tasting were good too. I’ve done this tour twice in the past year and recommend it highly! I wish I could give more than 5 stars!!! 🤙

Chain of craters

Well worth the time and money

David was an outstanding host and tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and entertaining. I highly recommend this tour. You will see a ton, learn a lot about the island and enjoy a delicious lunch.

lava flow at volcanoes national park in hawaii

Highly Recommend!!

Zane was incredibly knowledgeable about the island! If you want to go on a tour with a geologist, this is the one to take!! As a privately owned company, he was able to hit all of the major island highlights as well as take us to places on the island that other tour companies don’t visit. We learned so much about the history of the island and the volcanos on the island all while having a fantastic time! HIGHLY recommend!!

Spattering of lava at the viewing platform

Best Island Tour!

A must tour experience! Such an incredible day. What is unique about This tour, is how much you learn about the island formation and the flexibility in where he takes you! We traveled with friends and booked the VIP tour…if you can swing it, definitely put Geotours on your itinerary! Erik will not disappoint. You can see that he is passionate about the island and what he does. Mingled well with our group, lots of laughs, great energy and had a BLAST!!!

Girl on lava flow

Geo adventure family trip for the win!

David has a vast knowledge of so much of the island it’s amazing and he charmed us with a ton a factoids the whole day. Highly recommend if you are short on time on the island but want to see as much as you can in little time.

Very Best Geo Tour on the Big Island of Hawaii

Zane found his calling. He is incredibly well educated in geology, has traveled the world and knowledgeable about not only the local history, but the flora and fauna of the island too. And he is super personable and able to keep all 10 of interested for almost twelve hours of the day. We conversed about what we wanted to see on a big scale and he narrowed it to specifics based on weather, crowds and our groups patience. He was a saint. If you want to enjoy the very best island tour and get educated on the land and history, hire Zane and you will write the next five star review!

glowing lava at night

Awesome adventure!

We couldn’t have made a better choice!!! Definitely the guides know their stuff, from history of the island and its people to the geological topics that kept me entertained throughout the trip. We just about went around the island in vip style, the guys were well known everywhere they took us as well as knew their way. Will recommend it to a few friends that are planning to visit the island, it’s a must in your itinerary and couldn’t have made a better choice in tour guide services

Bolt says Geo Tour Big Island

Dave was a great guide. Very informative tour. I really enjoyed the geological aspect and lots of information on how the islands were formed and keep growing. Many interesting stops along the way including a walk through a lava tube. Very cool! Great experience!

family on lava flow smiling and having fun

One of the best tours ever

What an excellent way to get to know the Big Island and learn about its unique place on Earth. Our tour guide Eric picked us up on time at our rented villa along with a number of other visitors and we proceeded to spend one of the better days on a tour of the island. Eric is one of the proprietors of the tour, is a degreed geologist and is truly an engaging and friendly person. The tour was excellent which combined both interesting sights and a tremendous amount of local knowledge about lava flows and local history. To say that this was worth the day spent would be to put it mildly. Even at twice the price, I would happily do this again and recommend the tour to anyone.

will not refund tour price due to weather-related reasons. We will promise an incredible volcano experience but unfortunately cannot control the weather. Guests will be charged 100% of the tour price for cancellations made within 48 hours of the scheduled tour.

A combined minimum of 4 guests is required for a tour to operate. Should a tour not meet the tour minimum, customers will have the option to reschedule or receive a full refund. Advance notice will be provided at least 12 hours before the start time.

How large will my tour be? We operate Mercedes Sprinter mini-coaches with a maximum capacity of 14 passengers.

How comfy are the vehicles? Very! Our guides want to work for us because we pamper the guests AND the guides! Having driven low-roof, hard-seated, worn-out vans in the past, we understand the importance of being comfortable on the ride to the volcano (or around the island!)

Maintaining a fleet of Mercedes Benz passenger vans is more expensive than using inferior vehicles, but we never cut corners on safety or customer service – ever.

Our brand new vehicle even has reclining leather seats! Our vans have high roofs to maneuver through the cabin, adjustable air conditioning, seatbelt extensions, cup holders, and large windows for the best views. Our audio/visual package is top-of-the-line with a large flip-down monitor and separate speakers for video and guide headset. This technology allows for the driver/guide to show video while narrating; it’s the ultimate way to cruise the Big Island!

Where do the tours start? Offers free front door pick-ups at all major West Hawaii hotels and resorts. We also offer the option to meet at a central meeting point to accommodate a busy vacation schedule, if you prefer. For bed and breakfasts or smaller resorts, we’re happy to work with you. Leave the driving to us!

Can you accommodate wheelchairs? Our vans are equipped to handle the easy storage of a collapsible wheelchair or other medical equipment. We do not have a wheelchair lift, however. We have also installed an extra hydraulic side step for extra easy on and off for all riders.

How much walking or hiking will I be doing? Nearly all tours include the opportunity for a few short walks. However, none of them include any walking longer than 20 minutes with the exemption of the Kona Coffee, Cloud Forest, and Brewery Experience. Should guests choose to skip any of our short walks, guides are happy to make further accommodations.

For guests wanting to do extensive hiking, we are glad to customize a private tour to cover as much as much ground as you like. Our hiking guides are in excellent shape and will be excited to show off some of the many beautiful hiking trails here on the Big Island.

Passengers traveling with a collapsible wheelchair or walker are more than welcome. Please note, our mini-coaches are equipped to handle easy storage of a wheelchair or other medical equipment. We do not have a wheelchair lift on our vehicles at this time.

What should I wear? What should I bring? Although Hawaii is home to the endless summer, there are places and times where the temperature can drop substantially. Temperatures at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park can range from 50 to 75 degrees F. Saddle Road temperatures can get even chillier, to perhaps 40 degrees F. recommends wearing comfortable footwear, a hat and sunglasses, and shorts or long pants. Most guests wear a light jacket or bring long pants for after sunset. You have plenty of opportunities to change as the weather changes frequently. Oh, don’t forget your camera!

Are snacks, meals, and tips included in tour prices? We’ve chosen to work with the best restaurants and caterers on the Big Island to bring our guests an experience of all five senses. We like to eat well and our guests do too!

Tipping is, of course, at the discretion of the tour guest but is customary when great service has been provided. We think our professional tour guides are the very best on the planet and we know they appreciate receiving acknowledgments for their expertise, humor, and ability to make your tour memorable!

Will my cell phone work during my tour? Although some cell phone carriers have spotty coverage on the Big Island, we’ll be within cell phone range for most of the tours. Private or charter tours to Waipio Valley will have very limited cell phone coverage. Locals seem to prefer it that way, too. We have a charger on board in case your battery runs low, but some guests bring their own mobile battery charger. Then again, it might actually be nice to set down your phone for a while, too. We also rely on “The Coconut Wireless” or shouting across canyons to communicate.

Do you operate tours on holidays? On most holidays, we do operate. However, we do not operate our regular tour on the Ironman World Championships in October, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Our suppliers don’t operate on those days, so we’ve elected to do the same. Our guides have to get to the beach sometimes, right? If you or your group do wish to tour on a holiday, call us and we will be happy to make arrangements with other restaurants that may be operating that day.

Hawaii Volcanoes FAQs

As of 2023, there are 6 Hawaii volcanoes that are considered active. And the Big Island of Hawaii is home to 4 out of those 6. The active volcanoes on the Big Island include Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Hualalai. The remaining active volcano is Haleakala on Maui. There is also a volcano off of Big Island’s coast that is underwater too!

Unless the volcanoes are actively erupting, you will not be able to see lava in Hawaii. Kilauea last erupted in December 2020.

While you won’t die if you quickly touch the lava, you will definitely get a horrible burn. I definitely don’t recommend it!

It depends on traffic, but it usually takes about 2 hours if you don’t make any stops. There are a lot of cool places to see along the drive from Kona, so I suggest planning for 3-4 hours to take in some sights along the way.

Usually, the best way to see the volcano in Big Island is to go on a Hawaii volcano tour! You can also enjoy some self-guided tours if you prefer to go at your own pace to view these active volcanoes.

The best volcano tours take you to see the Kilauea volcano and help you to explore Volcanoes National Park. There are even some that take you to some black sand beaches and take you on a day trip all around the island of Hawaii.

If you want to see the red, hot lava glow, then you will want to go very early in the morning or after it gets dark under the night sky. However, there are plenty of other awesome things to explore at the Big Island volcanoes, so you can visit any time you want!

Where to Stay in Volcano Hawaii

Now that you know what to do at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, let’s talk about accommodations. There are tons of options for places to stay in Volcano Hawaii for all price points.

Unless you want to go camping, the only place to stay inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the Volcano House Hotel . It’s a historic Big Island hotel that is super convenient for exploring the park. And it’s great for exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with kids !

Otherwise, your best bet is to stay at a vacation rental in Volcano Village. Some of my top picks include Hale Sweet Hale (featured on HGTV), At the Crater’s Edge , and Volcano Hideaway Hale (also seen on HGTV).

Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce Are Droppin’ Big $$ In The Bahamas!

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Hollywood's latest "it" couple, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce , is packing on the PDA while enjoying the sandy beaches of The Bahamas.

As Taylor is on a break from her Eras Tour, and Travis is in his off-season of football, the couple is enjoying quality time together, including taking a vacation to the Bahamas.

Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce Hit The Beach

Last week, Taylor and Travis were spotted on the Bahamas’ Harbour Island enjoying private time at the $15K-a-night Rosalita House estate.

The two got close while swimming in crystal-clear water together, as they wrapped their arms around one another and puckered up for some steamy PDA. Taylor, who had a drink in her hand while in the water, had her blonde locks up in a braided ponytail and wore black sunglasses to protect her eyes from the hot sun.

They then sat down in the shallow water and snuggled.

Inside The $15K/Night Estate

According to the official website , the luxurious Rosalita House was founded on the site of what had been an original cottage owned by NY publishers, built in the early 60’s. Unfortunately, it had been destroyed by Hurricane Andrew.

The architect behind the Rosalita House is Clem Bruns Schaub of Florida, while the inspiration for the design came from the homes designed by Oliver Messel. "Driving the interiors was the desire to have every room open to the outside, so that the indoor and outdoor spaces would merge and blend seamlessly," the website states.

The name of the house was inspired by the Bruce Springsteen song 'Rosalita'.

Highlights Of Rosalita House & Harbour Island

Rosalita House and Harbour Island offer activities both on-site and around the island.

The island's main features include Pink Sands Beach, Dunmore Town, and some of the finest restaurants in the Bahamas such as The Landing, Queen Conch, Sip-Sip, The Dunmore, and the Rock House.

We wouldn't be shocked if Travis took Taylor out to dinner at some of these fine dining locations.

Taylor Swift Wears Cheeky Yellow Bikini

The 'Red' singer opted for a cheeky yellow bikini, which showed off her toned legs and body. She seemingly went makeup-free for the beach day with her babe.

Travis opted for a pair of blue patterned swim trunks.

After some time splashing around in the water, the couple lay on the beach to get their tan on. According to Page Six, Travis was seen reapplying sunscreen onto Taylor's back.

See the PDA-filled pictures here .

France & Italy Are On The Agenda

The Bahamas are not the only destination the two will reportedly visit as a source told the US Sun that Travis booked rooms at luxurious hotels in France and Italy for when Taylor will be performing her Eras Tour. He also made reservations at some of the high-class restaurants for them to enjoy on off-days.

“He wants to take her on romantic getaways to have her relax and go discover those nice cities and European romantic places together," the source said.

Travis Kelce Stays In $25K/Night Penthouse In Australia

When Taylor was on her Era's Tour performing in Australia, Travis Kelce flew to watch his girl's concert.

"I got to see two amazing shows of the Eras tour," the Kansas City Chiefs star told his brother on their podcast at the time, before continuing, "The last of the leg that Taylor has until she's back at it here in a couple of months. But yeah outside of that, got to get some lovely Singapore food and just catch the views."

The two allegedly stayed in a $25,000-per-night penthouse suite while in Australia. Yes, you read that correctly -- The NFL star and pop icon booked a luxurious suite that costs of a quarter of $100,000 (AUD) per night.

“The first floor boasts an exquisitely designed, expansive living area, stylishly curated with bespoke furnishings. The kitchen, bar, pool table, and media room are perfect for entertaining, while the dining room comfortably hosts up to 10 people,” the official website states of the suite the two reportedly stayed in.

Adding, “There is also a fully equipped office and butler’s quarters, allowing for completely personalized service, provided for by your private butler.”

It's safe to say the two enjoyed their time in Australia.

WEATHER ALERT

A wind advisory in effect for Grayson Region

Malnati with big break and great shot wins valspar and earns trip to masters.

PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Some of the shots that left Peter Malnati frustrated on the back nine were the ones that worked out so well for him Sunday in the Valspar Championship.

A putt he thought he left short dropped for birdie on the 12th hole. A shot into the 16th in mangled rough was close enough to a sprinkler that he was entitled to a free drop that put him on the fringe and made par easier.

Recommended Videos

But there was no doubting the winner.

Locked in a battle with hard-luck Cameron Young, Malnati drilled a 5-iron into the wind to 6 feet on the par-3 17th for birdie to break out of a tie, and he closed with a par for a 4-under 67 to win by two and earn his first trip to the Masters.

“I remember telling my caddie I needed to make a 2,” Malnati said. “That was really fun in that moment to just step up, not overthink it, just a full 5-iron at the TV tower, go. And to watch that ball fly was a really cool feeling."

Malnati tapped in that yellow golf ball for par on the final hole for only his second PGA Tour victory. Young, made it easier on him by taking bogey on the final hole for a 68. Young now has seven runner-up finishes without a win.

On a wild day of rallies and meltdowns, it came down to Malnati and Young playing a group apart as they headed into the tough finishing stretch at Innisbrook known as the “Snake Pit.”

Malnati's approach on the 16th went long and left into gnarly rough some 50 feet from the pin, leaving him a tough chip to try to save par and stay tied. But his foot was on a sprinkler head, which entitled him to a free drop. With the extra club length, he was able to drop it on the fringe and use putter, which he sent down to short range for par.

On the par-3 17th into wind, Malnati hit his most important shot of the day for birdie. Up ahead, Young hit his drive well left and did well to hammer a gap wedge over the trees and onto the green, 50 feet away. He lagged it about 10 feet short and missed the par putt.

Malnati found a fairway bunker on the 18th, but hit that on the green for a simple two-putt to finish at 12-under 272, his first victory since the Sanderson Farms Championship in 2015.

More than the $1,512,000 from winning, Malnati goes to the Masters for the first time and gets a two-year exemption. He also is assured of getting into the remaining four $20 million signature events without any help.

Malnati is one of six player-directors on the PGA Tour board, and he was singled out for criticism when he received a sponsor exemption — along with two other board members — to the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

“I told myself to do my best on every shot,” Malnati said as he fought back tears. “I was so nervous coming down the stretch. I can't describe it. It's so cool.”

It was gut-wrenching for Young, one of the top young talents and power players in golf who can't seem to get across the line. He shot 31 on the back nine at St. Andrews in the 2022 British Open, only to finish one shot behind Cameron Smith, who shot 30. Young also was in the hunt until the 16th hole of the 2022 PGA Championship.

“It was just a bad time for a pull,” Young said of his tee shot on the 18th.

Mackenzie Hughes of Canada (70) and PGA Tour rookie Chandler Phillips (69) tied for third. They were among five players who had at least a share of the lead in the final round at Innisbrook.

Hughes had the lead on the back nine with a 45-foot birdie putt on the 10th hole. He was tied and in the middle of the 12th fairway when it began to fall apart. His approach went over the green and into the back slope of the bunker, leaving him no shot to a back pin. He fell two shots behind when Malnati made a 15-foot birdie.

On the par-3 13th, Hughes came up short and in the water and he was never seriously part of the mix the rest of the way.

Keith Mitchell started the day with a two-shot lead, and he was three behind at the turn. Mitchell had to pitch out of the trees three times on the opening six holes and did not have a hole under par until an eagle on the 14th. By then he was 8 over for his round. He shot 77,

Seamus Power, playing in the final group, shot 76.

Malnati is No. 184 in the world ranking, making him the fifth player to win full PGA Tour events this year. His only other win in the fall of 2015 did not come with an automatic invitation to the Masters. Fall events started getting invitations the next year.

“You wonder if you're ever going to do it again,” Malnati said. “In the nine years since my last win, it's getting harder.”
